Squirrel!

Summary:

Melter and Inspector find a squirrel while walking home from a party and Melter chases after it. Inspector has to then chase after her girlfriend who had decided she will stop at nothing to chase this squirrel down and hunt it.

Notes:

I have plans to do oneshots of the Melter and Inspector and the three members of the Magnificus Fan Club. But if there’s other side characters you want oneshots of, feel free to let me know, I also don’t mind being given possible oneshot ideas for these side characters.

While Melter and Inspector aren't mentioned until later on in my FurScryption AU fic, I wanted to share this oneshot I wrote since I feel like its a fun thing to read while I'm continuing to write chapters for my FurScryption AU.

Also random note but this oneshot is inspired by that episode of Clarence where Clarence and Sumo chase a lizard.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Melter stumbled on the sidewalk, trying to keep her balance was difficult since she still felt a little dizzy from deciding to do a dare at the party she was at half an hour ago. Her short stout body swayed from side to side as she held her tail straight out to try and balance herself. Her arms were sprawled out, walking like she was on a tightrope.

The persian cat tried to find something she could focus on. Up ahead there was a street light on the sidewalk that lit up the area. She tried to keep her eyes focused on it. So that way she wouldn’t be stumbling so much.

Inspector walked beside her, taking long strides to try and stay ahead of the persian cat. She was a long borzoi with wispy curly cheek fur that gently swayed as she walked. Her large eyes focused on Melter, her girlfriend. Who was struggling to properly walk straight.

It was the middle of the night and the streets were quiet, fifteen minutes away was an apartment where Inspector and Melter came from, they went to a party one of their friends invited them to.

Their apartment was only about half an hour away, walking back could’ve been dangerous. The street they were walking down wasn’t that dangerous and there was a park nearby that usually had a security guard patrolling the park.

. . .

Inspector decided to be the responsible one and stay close to Melter. When they played truth or dare she only did truths. Since most of the dares were dumb things such as shouting from the window or getting your eyebrows waxed.
Melter on the other hand wanted to have a fun time, she said yes to all the dares(thankfully she didn’t get her eyebrows waxed) and decided to do a chugging contest with the host. Where she won by chugging the most punch from the punch bowl.

While at the party, one of the people there asked if she wanted to do Dizzy Bat with her and a few others. Melter of course agreed while Inspector watched her girlfriend. Not pleased with her decision but still supportive, she cheered her on.

. . .

Inspector rolled her eyes, she warned Melter that the act of placing her snout on a baseball bat and spinning around ten times then trying to walk afterwards wouldn’t be a good idea. Just because someone dared her to do that didn’t mean she should’ve gone through with it.

But Melter didn’t care, she didn’t want to be called a chicken or wimp out. The short stout persian cat agreed to the dare and is now dealing with the aftermath of stumbling on the sidewalk, still dizzy from the dare.

“I knew that dare wasn’t a good idea. How are you feeling anyways?” Inspector said as she looked down at her partner. Concerned about her and worried that she may fall over. Melter broke her gaze with the street light and turned to face Inspector.

“I had to do it! But yeah I’m ok.” She said, raising her fist in the air as she had a large grin on her face, looking up at the borzoi with pride. Before she felt herself about to fall as she caught herself.

Inspector was startled and quickly kneeled down in front of her girlfriend, concerned for her well being. She grabbed Metlers hands and gently squeezed them. Melter looked up at her girlfriend. Their eyes met as they started blushing. Both of their eyes seemed to sparkle, neither wanting to look away.

There was a moment of silence where the two just looked into each other's eyes. Both were speechless until Inspector heard a faint noise and broke her gaze with Melter. The borzoi’s ears pricked up as she stood up and looked around. Her large eyes observing the area around them, watching for the source of the noise.

Melter turned and looked the same direction her girlfriend was, curious as to why her girlfriend was looking around. Inspector took a few quick looks around the area before turning back to Meltler. Meeting her at eye level, the short persian cat continued to look at her partner’s eyes.

“You don’t seem ok. I think I should carry you home.” Inspector said with a concerned but serious tone. While she let her girlfriend walk home the first half of the walk back from the party. She didn’t want her to fall over again or get an injury.

Melter groaned.

“I don’t need to be carried home.” She said as she started to get up, acting less dizzy. She then continued as she started to brush herself off, Inspector crouched in front of her girlfriend.

“I can walk home on my o-” Melter was then interrupted when her ears twitched and she spun around facing away from her girlfriend. The persian cat's eyes quickly zoomed around, she heard a faint skittering noise from an unknown source. She started to quietly chatter as she quietly started to lower her body down to the ground.

Inspector grew worried, her ears lowered as the borzoi slowly stood up. Her girlfriend had a habit of chasing after small creatures like squirrels and mice. The skittering noise was most likely from a small creature or rodent. The borzoi quietly whined.

Melter scanned the area when she saw the source of the skittering, a red squirrel slowly creeped onto the sidewalk. It stopped and stood on its hind legs as it looked around, unaware that a persian cat was watching it. The squirrel then turned around and locked eyes with Melter.

The persian cat crouched down, her paws tucked into her body as she posed. Her body hung low as she held her head down and her tail slowly swayed back and forth like a pendulum. Her eyes fixated on the squirrel as they gleamed with anticipation. She made little to no noise to not startle the squirrel.

From afar she looked like she was in a loaf shape, but Inspector knew what was about to happen. The borzoi stared at the two, not breaking her gaze at any point.

She was ready to pounce as her eyes dilated and she started to grin. Melter and the squirrel were at a standoff. Both of them were standing a good five feet away from each other. Neither of them moved, nor did Inspector. Who watched her girlfriend, prepared to run after her.

Melter’s body wiggled as the squirrel started to slowly back away scared. The squirrel then broke into a sprint as it ran down the sidewalk. Melter waited a couple seconds before she chased after the squirrel. Taking short but quick strides as she ran on all fours. Panting as her short legs supported her stout body.

Inspector chased after her girlfriend. She didn’t run on all fours like her girlfriend and instead walked normally. Since she didn’t want to dirty her fur. Despite her strides being long and quick, she still had trouble trying to keep up with her girlfriend, who was half her height.

‘How, can she? Run at such a speed?’ Inspector thought as she panted trying to keep up with her girlfriend. She knew her girlfriend for almost a couple years now and yet there were things she didn’t know about Melter that surprised her.

One of them being the speed at which her girlfriend was able to run at.

Inspector tried keeping up with her girlfriend and was just about to when she was near a corner on the sidewalk, turning towards their home. All of a sudden the squirrel twisted its body and turned in the opposite direction.
Melter let out a small ‘mrrp’ in surprise as she quickly swerved her body leaned to the side, she appeared as if she was about to fall on her side. She gripped her claws into the concrete sidewalk. And thrusted herself as she lunged towards the squirrel.

The persian cat opened her short snout wide, ready to grab the squirrel with her jaws. Her eyes grew wide with anticipation. Her arms extended out as she unsheathed her claws. She hoped to grab the squirrel and carry it back to her girlfriend. Showing off her hunting skills.

Though just as her paws were about to grab onto the squirrel's slender body, it decided to take a literal leap of faith and leap out of Melter’s reach.

“Oomph!” The persian cat slammed onto the ground, getting the wind knocked out of her as her girlfriend could be heard in the distance running to catch up with her.

Melter rose to her paws and shook her head. She grumbled as she checked her paws to find that she was so close to catching the squirrel. But yet now it was so far away from her.

Nevertheless, she wouldn’t give up that easily and continued her pursuit.

Just as Inspector was about to catch up with her, being only a couple seconds away. The borzoi stared in wonder and horror as Melter started to break into another sprint. She seemed to run even faster than before as she used her claws to help grip onto the ground.

Melter decided that instead of trying to leap at the squirrel like before, she would chase it until it grew tired and started to slow its pace.

Once it would reach a halt she would then hide in a nearby bush or somewhere the squirrel wouldn’t be able to see her.

Then when the time is right…

BAM!

Melter would pounce on the squirrel, grab it with her sharp dagger like claws and serve the killing blow.

Where afterwards she would carry her prey in her jaws, placing it in front of her girlfriend and showcasing her hunting skills.

‘Inspector will love it! She will be so impressed and it will be so impressive. It will bring her to tears! It will make her love me even more, making me the best girlfriend ever!’ Melter thought to herself.

Pride swelled in her chest as she grinned thinking about how impressed her girlfriend will be. The persian cat continued on as she and the squirrel headed into a forest that was off to the side of the sidewalk they were on.

. . .

Inspector was roughly ten or more feet away from her girlfriend, unable to see where she went but being able to hear her. She stopped to catch her breath, she had been running for almost twenty minutes and hadn’t been able to take a break.

Despite her long legs and tall stature, she wasn’t the most athletic person. At her top speed she could outrun the average person. Though not at long distances could she run at her top speed since she would usually be out of breath after a couple minutes.

Inspector looked around, trying to figure out where her girlfriend could be. She listened closely, there was a small night breeze she could hear, a couple small animals and rodents moving around. But that was all.

‘Damn it. I can’t hear her!’ Inspector thought as she slammed her foot on the ground, annoyed.

She thought for a minute about what else she could do to try and figure out where her girlfriend was. An idea popped into her head.

If she couldn’t hear her, she could smell her.
Inspector raised her long narrow snout into the air and sniffed the air. She could smell a lot of things, rodents, people, grass. Though not Melter, Inspector kept sniffing the air. Trying to separate the smells so she could figure out where her girlfriend was.

After a few minutes of sniffing the air she caught a smell of her girlfriend. She sneezed afterwards, her girlfriend's smell was strong. Since she usually smelled like ash, she wasn’t sure why Melter usually smelled like ash though.

The borzoi turned her head towards the forest, the smell grew stronger. She started to walk towards the forest and the smell of ash grew even stronger. Just then she picked up Melter’s scent trail, along with the squirrels.

‘She’s gotta be in the forest, probably still chasing that squirrel,’ Inspector thought as she started to run into the forest, carefully avoiding any large tree roots or rocks so that she wouldn’t trip on them.

‘Hopefully she’s ok.’ She thought anxiously as she continued to follow the scent trail of her girlfriend and the squirrel.

. . .

Meanwhile Melter seemed to have tired her prey out, both her and the squirrel’s pace had started to slow.

Her long quick strides started to slow down. Her breathing became heavy as she felt her legs grow weaker with each stride. Melter started to feel a little lightheaded though she kept chasing the squirrel.

The squirrel also seemed to be stumbling, instead of running in a straight line and making sharp turns every now and then. The squirrel started to lean from side to side while running. It appeared that the squirrel seemed to be getting dizzy.

‘I think I have a chance to finally catch this squirrel, damn this thing has really been giving me a run for my money!’ Melter thought as she felt her body ache from all the running. She wasn’t used to running this much. Most small rodents and creatures she chased were fast but they would usually get tired after ten minutes. Maybe five if the creature had bad endurance.

Though this squirrel was fast, it didn’t even seem to get tired until roughly twenty minutes of being chased.

Melter was impressed by this creature’s endurance. She was aching and tired but she did enjoy the challenge, she wondered if maybe she should try and improve her endurance.

The squirrel’s speed started to slow to a crawl, Melter saw this as an opportunity to make her move and pounce! Melter slowed down and observed the squirrel. It soon stopped and leaned over. Trying to catch its breath.

Melter lowered her body down to the ground, she was a couple feet away from the squirrel. She arched her body so that her rump was high in the air. She lowered her head and her eyes were fixated on the squirrel as it raised its body and turned around. It began to examine its surroundings for any danger.

The persian cat stayed quiet as it slowed its breathing and didn’t move at all. Her eyes glowed in the darkness of the forest and she became worried that the squirrel would realize that she was standing right in front of it.

Melter felt beads of sweat form on her forehead as she dug her claws into the dirt anxiously. After what felt like forever the squirrel turned around, felt safe and began to groom its tail.

‘Now’s my chance’ Melter thought to herself, she grinned as she slowly removed her claws from the dirt. Letting the anxiety leave her body as she braced herself. Ready to pounce.

She arched her back upwards, her eyes gleamed as she lowered the upper half of her body. The persian cat's tail slowly swayed back and forth, after it swayed three times she straightened her tail and it lay on the ground.

‘Ready…and…’

“There you are!”

“Hm?”

Melter jolted in surprise, the squirrel turned around and saw Inspector standing a few feet away. It appeared startled as it turned and saw Melter’s glowing eyes. The squirrel seemed like it was about to make a break for it and try to escape its demise.

Melter looked at the squirrel and let out a low growl. She wasn’t going to lose her prey like before and accept defeat. Her body ached in pain and was exhausted. Despite this Melter had a little bit of energy left.

She quickly lunged forward at the squirrel, it turned around and stared at her in horror. Frozen in fear as it saw the large persian cat lunge at it. Melter’s eyes glowed as she grabbed the squirrel with her jaws.

Inspector watched as she saw her girlfriend land on the ground, she stood still for a moment. She heard no noise coming from Melter or the squirrel. All Inspector could see was the back of the persian cat. Who was hunched over and hung her head low.

After a moment Melter slowly her head and turned around with the now limp squirrel in her jaws. Her eyes were wide with pride as she grinned with the limp squirrel hanging in her mouth.

Inspector stared at her girlfriend in horror as Melter walked over and placed the squirrel at the borzoi’s feet. She sat in front of Inspector and looked up at her. She became concerned when she saw her reaction.

“You ok?” She asked as she rose to her feet, standing on her hind legs again.

Inspector was speechless for a minute before she began to speak with her words being jumbled together and sounded panicked.

“What happened? Are you ok? I thought you were injured? Oh my god! You caught the squirrel? I thought you would’ve lost track of it! I-” Inspector was shushed by her girlfriend, who placed her hand on her snout. She looked up at the persian cat.

Melter’s eyes were still wide but she was calm and lowered her hand off her girlfriend's snout. She then extended her arms outwards and Inspector fell to her knees and hugged Melter’s short stout body.

Melter hugged the borzoi back, smiling as she heard her girlfriend's breaths. Both of them sounded out of breath. After a couple minutes of hugging, the Inspector stood up. She looked down at the squirrel and was very impressed by her girlfriend's catch.

“That squirrel gave you a run for your money, can’t believe you managed to catch it.” She said as she knelt down and observed the squirrel. It looked like a full grown adult, was smaller than the usual grey squirrels she’d seen around their apartment and had reddish fur.

Melter grinned with glee, showing off her sharp dagger-like teeth as her eyes glowed. Inspector picked up the squirrel and gently carried it in her jaws.

She looked down at Melter. It was clear that she wanted to keep the squirrel as a prize. The short cat looked up at the borzoi with large pleading eyes and placed her hands on her chin. This was a common tactic Melter learned and had used to her advantage.

Inspector sighed as she spoke, her words were a little muffled due to her carrying the squirrel in her jaws.

“Ok, ok, we’ll eep the squirrel.” She said smiling at Melter as the two smiled at each other, they both started to blush as they shared a cute moment.

A faint noise could be heard as Melter and Inspector turned to see what it was, they braced themselves in case it was something like a rabid animal or some crazy person in the woods about to charge at them.

Instead it was a small grey mouse. Inspector was relieved at first, then she turned to her girlfriend and her heart dropped.

She saw her girlfriend’s eyes widen and she started to lower her body to the ground, her fur started to fluff up. Adrenaline was pumping through Melter’s veins as Inspector watched.

Just as Inspector was about to stop her girlfriend, the persian cat let out a yell.

“MOUSE!” And the mouse gave chase, causing Melter to follow it as she followed it.

Inspector sighed.

“Ah shit, here we go again.” And began to chase after her girlfriend again.

Notes:

The doodle is a shitpost/crack idea I had about Melter and Inspector if they were to have a kid and how their child would be Schnechtacus from Mysticons.

I mentioned it in my top notes but if there's any prompts or characters you'd like to see oneshots of, feel free to comment them down below! I'm open to writing different oneshots of the side characters from my FurScryption AU and Inscryption.
