Chapter 2: Prologue
Chapter Text
Kiera POV:
All I could feel was pain. My insides were burning, and it felt like my entire body was on fire. I couldn't describe how I felt if I tried. None of the punishments I had gone through were as bad as this. Not eating for 72 hours. Being locked in a cupboard for a week with no light or contact with the outside world except for my two pieces of bread I had a day and my two glasses of water. Waterboarding felt like nothing now. The lashes I had received were simple. The days I was strapped hanging onto a hook on the roof with, standing on the toes of my feet for days on end seemed effortless. The involuntary hysterectomy I was forced through with no anaesthetic or being put to sleep could not be compared to the unfathomable amount of pain I was going through. Even the removal of my left arm, and reattachment of a Vibranium arm that was connected to the nerves of my shoulder. Nothing compared to the pain I was currently in. I was unable to move, or scream. It felt as if I was paralysed. I could only hope this would end soon. Unfortunately, even if I could move, I would be unable to show that I was in pain. At The Red Room, an organisation formed by the Soviet Union that created child assassins we are taught that emotions are weak. Love is weak.
I have been at The Red Room since I was three years old. The first month that I was at the organisation consisted of sitting in front of a screen that flashed different words and sentences over the screen and through the headphones I was made to wear. This opened the brain to recognise sub-messages that would be shown. We were shown versions of childhood fairytales that portrayed the emotions that children should show, and that we are made to follow orders. There were video clips of cartoons with the same sublime messages that are sent to the brain. Finally, there were images of animals getting slaughtered, especially pigs, where children were compared to pigs being slaughtered. This message was the final one. Making the children recognise they too are raised for slaughter.
After this, training began. We were trained in ballet, acrobatics, and gymnastics. The reason we are trained in this is to make sure the children grow up nimble and flexible to make sure we are able to move in any possible way and put ourselves into any position when fighting. We are trained in weaponry and partake in target training. By the age of six, I was able to shoot direct bullseyes. I was able to clean and recognise all the different types of weaponry that was in The Red Room in under two minutes. I had started learning a multitude of languages which we were made to learn so if we went into any country, we would be able to camouflage ourselves easier. I learnt more than my fellow Red Room assassins, due to having an eidetic memory, I was made to learn more. At the age of ten we started training in ballet on broken glass, and if we made a sound or a face of pain we were then punished.
At the age of eleven we started target practice on human targets. Upon our order, if we hesitated, we were punished. If we hesitated after our warning, we were then killed. At The Red Room it was kill or be killed. We spent our days sparring with the other females in the organisation. This sparring was until death. Whoever won the sparring was not killed. If you hesitated to kill your opponent, you were killed yourselves. When I was taken to the organisation at three years old, there were twenty-six other female children between the ages of three and five. By the time I was eleven there was ten of us. At this point I had fluent in, German, Russian, Romanian, Italian, French, Greek, Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Urdu, Korean, and able to read and write in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Ancient Rome hieroglyphics. I had killed five of my fellow students, as well as seven human targets. At twelve I went through graduation, which was where we went through psychological testing, as well as physical testing. If we passed, we got the qualifications of, Master Assassin, Master Martial Arts, Staff Mastery, Knife Mastery, Master Marksman, Master Acrobat, Master Spy and Dagger Mastery. Once we received these qualifications we went through the final two steps. Firstly, we received a smaller version of a super soldier serum, which caused an increase in our senses, strength, speed, and healing. After this, we received an involuntary hysterectomy. At The Red Room, they deemed motherhood is a weakness to woman. So, if you lasted until graduation, you received this operation. After you passed graduation, you received the name, Widow. I was known as the Red Widow.
I was then sent on missions. Between the ages of twelve and fifteen, I had blown up a hospital in Germany, an orphanage in Vietnam and Thailand. She had assassinated the president of France, as well as killed multiple people that The Red Room deemed traitors to the organisation or held information that could cause harm to them. In all of these missions, I was made to not leave any witnesses, it did not matter if it was women, children, or men. If someone saw, they were deemed dead.
At the age of fifteen, I was then bought by The Red Room's cousin organisation, HYDRA. This organisation was built at the start of WWII by the NAZI's. I was one of their first assassins. Although they had many people working for the organisation, I was the first person they had bought fully trained and brainwashed. I was then further experimented on. Being their first soldier being bought, I went through a multitude of different experiments. I was injected with serums almost daily. After two years of experimentation, I was able to manipulate shadows. I could surround enemies in pitch-black clouds of dark space. I could use darkness to create portals or travel from one space to another. I could become invisible by covering myself in shadows. I was able to see through darkness. I could create impenetrable barriers by using black energy. I was able to fire bolts of dark energy and manipulate the shadows to become any type of weapon I wished. I was able to absorb and dissipate shadows and was stronger at nighttime or in dark places.
After this was completed at the age of seventeen, I went through the process of having my left arm amputated, and instead an arm made from stolen Vibranium, the strongest metal on earth was attached via the nerves connecting it to my shoulder. Two years later leads to now. They had recently injected me with an unknown substance. I was overheard from the scientists that I was the first to be experimented with whatever serum was being used. Ever since then, I was in unexplainable pain.
Suddenly the pain stopped. I opened my eyes disorientated. I could see all the particles in the air. I sat up slowly and looked around. The voices of the scientists could be heard from the other side of the wall. I could hear them talking about how it was successful. I had woken up from the experiment. One of the scientists walked into the room and started asking me questions, but I couldn't hear them. All I could focus on was the intense burning at the back of my throat. I could only hear the thumping of the scientist's heart and the blood flowing through their veins. In no time I had flashed to the scientist at a speed I had never seen before. I grabbed him by the throat and pinned him to the wall before sinking my teeth into his neck and draining his blood. Moments later I let go of his neck and he slumped to the floor.
I knew that nobody should have to go through this.
I ran around the room smashing the equipment that was around the room. All the vials that were on the surgical tables and benches surrounding the walls of the room, causing them to break on the floor and all the liquids to disburse. I could hear the screams coming from the other side of the room and I whipped my head to the side staring at the others. They immediately started walking backwards as I let out a snarl. I ran to the door and slammed my shoulder into it causing it to dent and crash. Suddenly there was guns pointed at me, and shots were fired. They all deflected off my body, rendering the guns useless.
"You're done now," I growled lowly. In no time at all, I had made my way around the eight guards that had arrived, snapping their necks as I ran around. The four scientists that had performed the experiment started running through the hallways, but I ran up to two of them, breaking their necks before grabbing the last two, and pinning them against the wall like the first scientist and drained them of blood too. It was clear they had no proper idea of how to control me now that I had successfully gone through this transformation. As I made my way through the organisation, I had collected multiple guns, six daggers, eight knives, a pair of batons that when activated created electrical charges as well as electrical bracelets that sent pulses through them. Finally, I got changed out of my medical gown and got changed into a typical Widow catsuit, where I then attached all my weapons. I then made my way through the rest of the organisation, and killed every single one of the guards and scientists that were inside. I drained another three humans whereas the rest I snapped their necks. I did not want to waste my bullets on them. Fortunately, I was unable to find any other human experiments so there was no one else to set free. After having run through the base another time, I set myself up in one of the rooms with different equipment and found a multitude of different bombs. Quickly running around, I placed five separate ones and then made my way to the exit, moving far enough away to see the base suddenly engulfed in flames. I stayed there watching until I could be certain that no matter who found the base, whether it be the underground area or the area above earth, there would be nothing but rubble and dust. Once I was satisfied, I took off, not sparing a second glance back. Not noticing the four sets of red eyes watching me.
Chapter 3: Chapter One
Chapter Text
It had been ten years since Kiera had escaped from the HYDRA base in Russia and WWII had officially won by the British. Although Kiera was not sure exactly what had happened to her, she had been able to spend the first few years figuring out what changes she had gone through. She found that she was even faster than prior to when she underwent the super soldier serum. She could also hear further away, see further away, and was stronger. It seemed as if the rest of her body was as strong as her Vibranium arm was, which was previously stronger than her other arm. She had discovered that she sparkled in the sunlight, which was no matter to her, as she had always tried to stay off the radar and away from witnesses and cameras thanks to her experience previously in her missions for both The Red Room and HYDRA.
Her ability regarding Umbrakinesis had only increased to complete Darkness Manipulation. She was able to create animated shadows. This being able to transform their and/or other's shadows into living beings. As the rule of anything happening to the real body happens to the shadow, this ability may allow the user to warp the shadow to manipulate the form of themselves or others, causing anything that happens to the shadow to be reflected in the true body; in short, a form of "reverse shadow puppetry." She could do bio-darkness manipulation. Users can manipulate biologically/bodily based or biofield-originated darkness and shadows and use for things such as teleporting via darkened areas, use oneself as a living portal of darkness, turn invisible in shadowed areas, draw reserves of dark energy from obscure dimensions, to potentially blacking out a target's senses. She was able to adapt to the darkness. User is able to survive and adapt to dark environments (especially nighttime conditions), with a circadian cycle programmed for nighttime activity, heightened senses to compensate the absence of light, and darker coloration. Kiera was able to attack using shadows and darkness. The user can release/use darkness/shadow to attack in various shapes and/or intensities, either projected, used as a part of melee attacks. She was able to bind, imprison and/or otherwise stop object/being by surrounding them completely by using darkness. She was able to solidify and give solid-like properties to darkness/shadows with the level of solidity going from loose jelly to metal-like hardness or beyond. Kiera was able to manipulate their own darkness and dark energy. Using this ability, one can effectively manipulate one's own visibility by absorbing light, create a personalized field of shade or wield it for specialized techniques like attacks and defence. Kiera found that if she were unable to find blood easily, she could consume and digest darkness/shadow to sustain themselves and their powers. She could permanently eliminate shadows, erasing them from the environment to make the area more visible. Where on the other hand she could generate and project shadows and darkness which absorb or nullifies light in the area. She found that she could interact with shadows as if it were tangible. This allows them to mess with the shadow's caster. They might also be able to induce an effect by interacting with their shadow. They also might use their shadow to interact with the target's shadow and effect the person casting the shadow that way. She was able to move, manipulate or otherwise interact with matter using darkness/shadows. She could create portals using darkness/shadows as well as teleport via shadows/darkness, merging into shadows/darkness and appearing anywhere else from the same element. Kiera could also use the darkness and shadows to release and surround themselves in/with darkness/shadow for defensive and/or offensive purposes, becoming almost untouchable. The aura may also give the user enhanced physical capabilities such as speed, strength, and durability. She could create or wield weaponry with power over darkness, which grants the user a wide variety of darkness-based abilities. Kiera was able to possess a shadow that can kill anyone and even destroy any thing caught within it and could hide within the shadows and remain undetected. They can use this technique to spy on individuals without leaving behind physical evidence.
It had been quite hard gaining further abilities surrounding her ability to manipulate the darkness, rather than just shadows. A multitude of times it had been accidental when something new had occurred and she had decided to write down her abilities when they occurred so she could work on them further. She would spend time in forests or caves gaining control over them, just like she had to do when she was first able to manipulate shadows. This then made it easier for her to find and hunt people for food. It took her two of those years to fully understand that she was no longer under the control of The Red Room and HYDRA, especially when her emotions became heightened at times. So, with this newfound freedom, she found the ability to shadow travel to criminals to feed easier, especially when innocents were not as often out during the middle of the night.
Once it reached year three, she had decided to start researching into different HYDRA bases. She then spent the next five years slowly travelling through she shadows to different bases that she knew of from her time in HYDRA as well as the documents she had taken from the base she stayed at. When she discovered that she could communicate with the shadows it became easier, as secrets cannot hide from shadows, and they were able to tell her of the locations and each time, she would decide on a new strategy. Slowly she found that the HYDRA operatives tried to become sneakier and further under the radar, as each base she went through, there were no survivors. Whether they were people sold or kidnapped, or those that worked willingly for the organisation, she destroyed them all. She could not risk anyone staying alive. Although she hated killing those that may be innocent, she found the safest choice was to kill them. She did not want other super soldiers out in the open, especially when the shadows whispered that unlike her, there was no signs of brainwashing, but were completely unstable, able to take down entire countries overnight. She had tried to speak to those brainwashed by The Red Room and HYDRA in the first few bases she took down, but when she was unable to get through to them, she decided to just end them all. It also helped when nobody requested her help in freeing them when she would unlock cells, even after realising she was leaving. She always gave them the option; she just did not spend her time trying to change their minds. It had taken the full eight years after working on her own control and studying her changes for her to take down the bases, and when another cropped up, the shadows would whisper the location. The shadows were under strict orders to forever keep the look out for The Red Room and HYDRA operations. There were times she found that HYDRA had hidden certain people in organisations, spying and hiding, but the moment they mentioned HYDRA, whether in a whisper over the phone, or hidden in an alley, she was there moments later, hidden in the shadow, draining their blood, and setting their bodies on fire. They were all destroyed. She knew this type of organisation would never stay completely destroyed, cut off one head and two more grow back, but she was always there, waiting in the shadows, to make sure they did not continue their work.
She had just visited a new operation that was in Germany. It was one of their most hidden bases yet. Above the ground, it looked like an ordinary barn on a large piece of property, with no surrounding properties for miles. However, the shadows had told her about the underground operation. There were fifteen scientists, at least forty guards, and from what she understood, ten people who had gone under the same experimentation that she did. She was in a new catsuit that she had created through her shadows. It covered her arms, and was skintight, all the way to her feet. Her boots had a steel capped toe and went to just below her knees. It was a breathable material which seemed to entice the shadows surrounding her to stay close. She had a belt on, that held four separate knives and two daggers. She had another dagger in her right boot on the inside, and a handgun in her left boot. She had a gun strapped to each thigh, and she had two katana's strapped to her back and over her shoulder she had an automatic rifle. Not that she needed them, but it never hurt to be prepared.
---
Hidden in the trees, were four sets of red eyes that belonged to four vampires that were on the elite guard of the Volturi. The Volturi are the largest and most powerful coven of Vampires, which rule all the vampires throughout the world. They enforce the laws of the vampire world, to make sure they aren't discovered by humans.
The leaders of the Volturi are Aro, Caius and Marcus Volturi. Aro was born in Ancient Greece, 1340BC. He was however transformed into a vampire in his Mid-Twenties. He showed the ability of tactile telepathy, which means that he was able to read someone's thoughts and memories of their entire life through skin to skin touch. He turned his sister, Didyme and his wife and mate, Sulpicia shortly after he turned into a vampire. They met Marcus shortly afterwards, who was turned in his mid-twenties as well. Marcus got the gift of being able to read the emotional ties between people. This being, mate, true mate, blood singer, sibling and parental bonds. Caius was born in 1300BC and was changed into a vampire in his mid-thirties. Although Caius doesn't have a distinct gift, his tactile mind, and ability to create almost impossible to be defeated strategies, and then multiple backups, could almost be thought of as a gift in itself. He met Aro and Marcus not long after they had formed the Volturi and became one of the leaders as soon as he joined the coven upon Aro seeing his skillset. He brought his mate and wife, Athenodora with him when he joined the coven. Slowly after they created their coven, which consisted of the six of them, they slowly began to either sire other vampires, or came to them wishing to join their coven. The coven originated in Greece, however, once they had gathered vampires, many with useful gifts and talents, and built up enough power, they moved to Volterra, Italy.
However, it wasn't until 500BC when the Volturi defeated the Romanian Coven who deemed themselves leaders of the Vampires, however, the Volturi wanted the power, and believed more in keeping Vampire's hidden, so human's weren't aware of what they were, so they didn't try and seek out vampires and destroy them. After they defeated the Romanian Coven, they started creating laws for vampire's, and only enforced them more over the centuries. These laws were few, and simple to be followed. Hunts needed to be inconspicuous, preferably with victims that are unlikely to be missed, and their remains should be disposed of. Due to being incapable of self-control, immortal children were not to be created. Meaning children being turned into vampires. The child, creator and those that defend and know of their existence will be destroyed. Any dealing with Children of the Moon, unless having the purpose of destroying them is prohibited. Coming forward with seeing a rule being broken, if false, is punishable by death. Not bringing attention to their vampire traits, meaning sparkling in sunlight, using their heightened speed and strength in front of humans is against the law. Their interactions with humans must not draw attention, and if they become aware, the vampire at fault is responsible of silencing the human. These being either killing or turning the human. Finally, if you create a newborn, the creator is in charge of teaching the laws, and in charge of their behaviour before they can be on their own. If while a newborn, they don't follow the laws, the newborn will be destroyed, regardless of if they know the laws or not.
The Volturi are in charge of enforcing these laws and are often thought of being vicious and cruel due to them often punishing the offenders by death. Often, they are challenged by other covens, due to them not agreeing with the laws, not believing they should be hidden from humans.
The Volturi successfully ruled the vampire world for 25 centuries. During this time, they had destroyed different immortal children, which was the reason behind them outlawing the creation of them. They cleaned up and successfully stopped the southern wars, which were wars between newborn armies, in the southern parts of America, hunt all the Children of the Moon to near extinction, and sired their own vampires to increase their coven size, and spread the laws across the world.
Once they had a large coven, it got separated into sections depending on rank, which only enforced that they were the rulers of the vampire world, rather than a normal coven. They had the three rules, and their wives. Then the Elite Guard, which were led by the witch twins, Jane and Alec. Jane having the power of illusionary pain, which causes the target to feel the pain of being burnt alive. Alec on the other hand had the gift of sensory deprivation, meaning they can block all senses of those he directs this power towards. Behind them was Demitri, who was a vampire with the gift of tracking. He is able to pick up the essence of someone's mind and follow it across any distance over the world. Then finally Felix who is the strongest vampire thew Volturi has ever had.
---
These four vampires had been instructed to investigate Germany. It had been reported that a large amount of people having gone missing, larger than any serial killer known to man, and on top of that, a lot of bodies had shown up dead, completely drained of all their blood. It had made the Volturi wary, and frustrated that someone wasn't following the laws of their kind, and not being inconspicuous of their killing. It had caused the three rulers to decide that the Elite Guard should investigate. It wasn't long until someone slipped up and mentioned needing to find more bodies for their soldiers to drain before letting them out into the world, and they decided to follow the van full of men holding guns, and seven dead bodies.
This brought them too now. They had waited in the trees, approximately half a mile away from the barn, but they could easily see the van pull up to a stop, and the five guards and seven bodies heading inside the barn. It was only their heightened hearing and eyesight that meant they were able to see when the door opened, that there were more guards, scientists, and they just glimpsed a pale white hand and glowing red eyes before the door closed. They were about to leave and go back to their masters when they noticed someone suddenly step out of the shadows next to the barn. It caused them to look at the figure confused, they heard no heartbeat, could not smell any scent, and definitely noticed they had not been there before. They could see the person wearing a skintight suit, which covered their entire body, however, Demitri was able to make out the shine of their left hand, which was clearly not skin. They were clearly a girl, from seeing their long, shiny black hair that was in double dutch braids down to their waist, and he was just able to make out plump rose coloured lips in the dark. However, it was when they turned slightly to look around that they noticed the bright, glowing red eyes. A vampire. One of them. The four guards watched as she looked around, before stepping back into the shadows and disappearing from view.
"So, there is definitely a vampire in this area," Felix commented quietly, after watching her disappear from sight.
"Obviously," Jane drawled, annoyed at the commentary. "Let us go report out finding to the masters."
"Wait," Demitri said hurriedly before they could move. "I want to witness this."
"Demitri, we were told to witness and return before doing anything," Jane chastised, however, before she could use her gift in annoyance, Demitri continued.
"No, I don't think she has been doing the killing. Did you see, she had an entire arsenal on her body, and was clearly hiding. I think something else is going on."
Before anyone could contradict anything, he said, they heard the sound of gunfire, before silence. However, it was only ten minutes later that they saw the door to the barn open. From what they could see, a multitude of bodies laid on the ground, blood surrounding them. Then she stepped out. Although there was not a hair out of place, there was blood splatters on her face, and her suit was covered in blood. They watched as she licked the edge of her sword, which was stained in blood, before putting it across her back. Then they watched as she ran halfway across the clearly, putting herself in the middle of the barn and where they were hiding, and she just stood staring at the barn in silence.
"What is she doing?" Alec hissed quietly, not wanting the vampire to notice them. However, before anyone could respond, there was a sound of an explosion, and they watched as the entire barn exploded, and felt as beneath the ground rumbled and the earth split, dirt, debris and blood exploded out of the earth soring into the sky. Everything was destroyed, and they watched silently as the vampire ran quickly towards the barn once the explosions had ended, moving swiftly and gracefully around the fires, and debris. The four vampires had to make sure they didn't take their eyes off her; they had never seen a vampire move at such a speed. Not even a vampire with a specific gift of speed could compare to the levels of agility and speed that this girl had. Once everything had burnt enough that no bodies could be seen at all, they watched as the girl moved quickly towards the tree line near where the vampires were perched. However, she came to a blinding halt only feet from the trees they were on, before snapping her head up to look at them before they watched as she disappeared into the shadows and was gone from their sight.
It was minutes later, and the group of four was still watching the space where the girl had disappeared before Jane spoke.
"Now, now we go to the masters."
Chapter 4: Chapter Two
Chapter Text
The three leaders of the Volturi were sitting in their thrones, the last trial of the day having just finished, when they heard a loud knock on the door to the throne room. It was only moments later when the door opened, and the Elite guard walked into the room, stopping in the middle, bowing their heads in respect.
“We weren’t awaiting to heard from you so quickly,” Aro commented, eyebrows furrowing. They had been advised to call with their findings, and then depending on them, eliminate the threat to their existence, however, they had not contacted himself, Caius or Marcus but instead returned.
“Yes, master,” Jane began. “Something occurred. There indeed were clearly newborn vampires, and humans working alongside them, however, before we could do anything, the threat was already eliminated.”
“Oh?” Caius said stoically, already frustrated at what they were being told.
Aro walked briskly towards Jane, before grasping her hand and closing his eyes, so he could witness what had occurred. It was a few seconds later when he stepped back and let out a small giggle before turning to face his soul-brothers.
“It appears, a vampire, one that I have never seen before, in either memories or in person, turned up to the location that Jane, Alec, Demetri and Felix were stationed at, melting into and out of the shadows, covered in arsenal, came out of the building, before exploding the building and running into the forest, where she made eye contact with the guard, before disappearing into the shadows again.”
At this, Caius’ interest was spiked, and he leaned forward in his seat. “I’ve never heard of a gift like that,” he commented, and considering he and his brothers had been alive for three millennium it was a strange occurrence.
“I read Jane’s thoughts, but what did you all think of the vampire?” Aro turned to look at them causing them to all look at him for a very moment in surprise, not expecting their opinions to be brought up.
Demetri stepped forward, bowing his head, before standing up straight, his hands clasped together behind his back. “She was impossibly fast, faster than any vampire I have ever met. She was clearly either trained before she was turned, or learnt afterwards, given the number of weapons that were on her body.”
As he stepped back, Felix stepped forward, bowing as well. “She clearly knew how to use her gift, she was hidden in the shadows and even when we knew where to look, you could not see a single bit of her, even her red eyes. Sound was completely hidden as well, and the only reason we noticed her was due to her red eyes when she stepped out of the shadows. She also clearly knew what was happening in the building, because she knew exactly where to enter and exit the shadows, and where to place the explosives.”
Finally, Alec stepped forward. “As Demetri said, she had some knowledge and training. As you would have seen, she was able to easily move around bits of fire and debris that was flying. Although we are incredibly fast, she had speed and agility that is unmatched to most of our guard. She knew exactly what she was doing, how she would do it, and left absolutely no evidence behind.”
All four of the guard stood next to each other and waited to hear further instruction. However, instead they were asked to leave the room, and Aro turned to look at his brothers. At Caius’ impatient look Aro stepped closer to them and smiled whimsically. “Demetri was right, I’ve never seen a vampire move at such speed, and precision. I could hear gun shots, so she clearly didn’t use her vampire nature for each kill. Her small showing of disappearing into the shadows, although that is all they saw, I don’t believe that to be all her powers shown. She has intrigued me,” Aro commented.
“You want her in the coven?” Marcus said bored, already wanting to leave the room.
“No, brother,” Aro said, grinning largely. “I want her in the Elite guard.”
“Elite guard?” Caius chastised. “We haven’t even met her yet, and already you want her in the guard?”
“Brother, when you meet her, you’ll be agreeing with me straight away. Let us send the four to find her and ask her to come in.”
“Go ahead,” Caius said, and Aro looked at him in amusement. As much as his brother attempting to seem consistently nonchalant or frustrated, he couldn’t hide the intrigue that showed in his eyes.
And at that, the door opened, and the four guards re-entered.
Chapter Text
“Почему вы следуете за мной?” Kiera questioned the four red eyed people standing in front of her. She could see that they had the same eyes as her, and the same pale, almost translucent skin. She had so far destroyed all her fellow experiments, but she doesn’t recognise these four, except the time she destroyed a base and they were watching from the tree line.
“Pardon? Do you speak English?” The tall, dirty blonde man asked. Kiera glared at him before giving a brief nod.
“Да,” Kiera confirmed. “You is following me, why?”
Jane who was infuriated that someone was questioning them, decided to get straight to the point. “Pain,” Jane spoke quietly, staring deeply towards Kiera.
The other three stood a step back, waiting for when Kiera dropped in pain, and Alec could subdue her, but it never came. All they heard was a slight grunt, but Kiera didn’t move, she didn’t wince, or twitch. All there was, was a simple grunt almost in acknowledgment but that was it. Instead they watched as her eyes turned pitch black, including both her usual red iris, and the surrounding white area. They watched as it seemed like the shadows gravitated towards her and twirled around her body, almost as if protecting her. Before they could blink, the shadows encompassed Kiera and she disappeared, however, not far, she dematerialised right behind Jane, grabbed the back of her neck, and brought her into the shadows, and she returned to where she was originally standing, however, this time, Jane was in front of her. Kiera’s metal arm was wrapped around Jane’s neck, with her right hand by her side. It would almost look casual, if the hand was commanding the shadows to surround Jane’s arms and legs, stopping her from being able to move.
The three other people all crouched down, growling, at the sight of Jane completely at Kiera’s mercy. Kiera watched them carefully as almost straight away she saw a black mist floating from his palms towards them both. However, it retracted as soon as they all heard cracking, and upon looking closer, Jane’s neck could be seen with cracks starting to form on the marble like skin. “I do not want to hurt anyone, but the moment you take a step further, I will command my shadows to rip off her limbs and I’ll pull off her head, or maybe I’ll command my shadows to send her far, far away, where she will never be found. Now are we going to have a pleasant conversation, or are you all going to fight me?”
Alec who just glared at Kiera, didn’t respond, but Demitri stood forward and gave a slight nod. “Ask away?”
“Why do you have red eyes? Are you experiments too? Did you get out?” Kiera asked cautiously. The three males all turned to look at each other in bewilderment.
“We are not experimenting as you called it,” Felix began. “We are vampires, and we work for the Volturi, they are the leaders of Vampires around the world. We make sure the rules and laws of the Vampire species are followed.”
“Vampires?” Kiera asked confused. She had never heard of them before. “Not experiments?”
“No, not experiments,” Demetri repeated softly. He had obviously picked up that something had happened to the young vampire. He started feeling protective and didn’t want harm to come to her. “Why would you think we were experimented on?”
Ignoring the question, she turned to them all. “You work for Volturi? Not, not HYDRA?”
“Yes, we don’t work for, HYDRA, whatever they are,” Demitri continued, slowly taking steps forward.
“Then, then why did I find you at a HYDRA base?” Kiera questioned quickly. Before they could continue, she spoke fast again. “Why have you been following me for a week? If you are not HYDRA, WHY WERE YOU THERE?” Keira snarled, and she shoved Jane away from her into her brothers waiting hands. “I will not go back,” Kiera snarled, “I am no longer the fist of HYDRA, the Winter Widow is dead. You can tell HYDRA that themselves.”
Felix, Jane and Alec were surprised to see Demetri step closer towards the girl and speak in a soft voice. “I don’t know about them, but I don’t even know what HYDRA is. We were at that barn scouting, as we had heard rumours of feedings that brought a lot of media traction due to the missing people, and odd deaths. We were meant to see if it was vampires and report back to the leaders of the Volturi. Do you understand so far?”
“Да,” Kiera said quietly, “but it doesn’t explain why you have been following me. I want to be alone. Why can’t you leave me alone?”
“When we came home, one of the leaders of the Volturi was curious about you. He wants to meet you,” Demetri responded.
“And if I don’t want to come?” Kiera bit back. “How do I know this isn’t a trap?”
“Then I’ll offer my head up on a platter for you,” Demitri said quietly. “You’ll have your shadows around you, so you can disappear. You are arriving as a guest, not a prisoner.”
Before Jane, who had finally recovered went to snarl at Demitri, he put up his hand to silence her. Before Demitri could explain his actions, Jane had muttered Pain towards Demitri and immediately he dropped to his knees, his arms locked as his body shook. Kiera let out a snarl, “don’t touch him.” Then suddenly Demitri was surrounded in shadows and the pain ceased. Demitri slowly stood to his feet, staring at his body that seemed to be surrounded in shadows that moved along his body like a breeze.
“Do not touch him again,” Kiera growled. “Touch him again and I will separate your head from your shoulders and burn you before anyone could blink.”
“You’re…” Jane began but she couldn’t finish the sentence. As promised, Kiera had pulled out one of her Katana’s and Jane’s head fell off her shoulders. She twisted her body around and leant back as Felix went to grab her. She disappeared into the shadows before Demitri saw two large hands form in the shadows that grabbed Felix’s head and tore it off his body, throwing it towards one of the trees, before Keira returned and ran at Alec, before using her momentum to knee him in the stomach as as he bent, she wrapped her legs around his shoulders, and pulled back with all her might. As they fell back, she pulled and as she did a backwards roll, Alec’s head followed. She landed in a crouched position and faced Demitri.
“You,” she said, giving him an odd look. “You come with me.” Then she gripped his hand and suddenly he was completely enclosed in the shadows and they disappeared.
—-
“What the fuck?” Demitri exclaimed as they arrived in what appeared to be a cave. He looked around quickly, noticing how there was at least 6 different types of knives, and five of each knife displayed on a table against a wall of the cave. Next to these knives were at least 8 daggers, all different lengths. Finally hung on the wall was two sniper rifles, three assault rifles, two revolvers, five handguns and a machine pistol. Finally, there were also two short swords and a long sword. Underneath the guns on another workbench were buckets of different types of bullets and a cleaning station for the guns and swords.
As Demitri was looking around, his current thoughts vanished as the sight before him, however he was brought back to reality, when he heard a gun being pulled apart. He looked over and saw as Kiera removed the katanas from her back and placed them on an empty table, alongside her three knives and two daggers, and three handguns. He shook his head as if to get his thoughts sorted, before he turned to Kiera, who was now looking at him, her head tilted as if she was trying to figure something out.
“Fuck,” Demitri swore, shaking his head. “Why did you do that? We are in so much shit,” Demitri breathed out panicking. She had just killed 3 of the Elite Guard and kidnapped another. “You just killed the Elite Guard, you kidnapped me, what the fuck is going on?”
Kiera shook her head and clicked her tongue. “If they’re the Elite guard, I would hate to see what the rest of the guard are like. They were pathetic.”
“What are you…”
“The girl, clearly not a fighter. Remove that pain aspect and she is nothing. Small boy is the same. Big man thinks because he is bigger and stronger than others, that nobody will defeat him. Idiots.”
Demitri just stood there in shock. He couldn’t believe what Kiera was talking about. Everyone feared Jane. Not even him or Felix would contradict her, and if she was upset or annoyed, then Alec was upset or annoyed. Vampires feared her due to her abilities, and here is another vampire who resisted the pain, but also stopped him from feeling it. She had single handed tore apart three of the most feared vampires within Volturi all within a few seconds.
“I don’t know your name,” Demitri said softly, wanting to know before he continued his sentence.
“Kiera,” she replied, giving a short nod to the vampire.
“Kiera, I am one of the Elite guards, my name is Demitri. I’m not trying to scare you, but you could be destroyed for what you did. I could be an accomplice because you took me with you. Aro, one of the leaders, can see all a person’s memories and thoughts with a single touch. It could look like I didn’t try to help them.”
At this, Kiera’s frowned. “I don’t want you destroyed,” she muttered softly. “You are nice.”
“Kiera, if I don’t go back and explain the situation, I will be destroyed. I have to go back.”
“I don’t, I don’t understand. Why, why can’t you stay here with me?” Kiera had no idea where this vulnerability was coming from, but something inside her was making her want to lean on Demitri and tell him all her secrets.
“I’m sorry Kiera, but I have to go back,” he said just as softly back.
“I come with you, you be safe,” Kiera nodded, making up her mind. “I protect you.”
Demetri just shook his head at what she was saying, but before he could reply, Keira was flitting around the room, collecting the weapons she had previously put down. Her two Katanas got quickly strapped across her back, and she started attaching the guns to her waist and thigh holsters, before attaching an array of daggers and knives across her body.
“Kiera, I don’t need your protection, hopefully I will be back before the others and can show my side of things.”
“No, no,” Kiera rapidly shook her head from side to side. “I protect you. Now tell me where we go, and my shadows will take us together,” and before Demetri could say anything further, she had already grasped his hand, and the shadows took them away from the cave they were in.

Chapter 6: Chapter Four
Chapter Text
It was late in the evening when Demitri and Kiera shadow travelled into the outskirts of Voltura. Kiera had kept to her word regarding protecting Demetri, as she had not moved more than an inch from his side as they travelled towards the castle where his master’s lived, however, he would be lying if he did not admit that he was nervous. He was scared that Jane, Alec, and Felix had arrived back before him, and the master’s took him being taken away as a lack of judgement on his end. He had not been lying to Kiera when he said that he would be punished. It did not seem like Kiera was doubting his words, as she stayed close, close enough for her to grab him and shadow travel away if required. She could not stop this tugging feeling inside, that said she and Demetri were meant to meet. She had neve trusted another person before, but he made it so easy for her to warm up to him. She did not know why, and she did not love this feeling of vulnerability that she was subjecting herself to, but she also did not want it to end. It was the first time she had felt warmth towards another person in her entire life. She knew she needed to keep her guard up regarding wherever they were going, but she would also make sure to keep Demetri safe, regardless of any doubt that filled her mind. She would not allow her first ever source of comfort, not to his masters, not to anyone.
As they neared the castle, Demetri could feel the apprehension and wariness getting stronger the closer they got. The entire walk, he had witnessed Kiera keeping her back straight, and look around as she scanned everywhere, she went. However, he began to notice that although she seemed the same as she did for the entire walk, he noticed her eyes darting more than before, and he could see her hands twitching, and even forming firsts at times, and her right hand kept reaching for the gun on her outer thigh, before her fist would straighten out and fall flat against her leg again. He could also feel movement on the right side of his robe, and if he wasn’t supernatural he wouldn’t have thought anything of it, but the repetition of it made him eventually look down, and he could see her fingers grasping the side of his robe and it made him give a small smile at how it was almost as if to grab and pull him out of any danger. Even if he were much older than her and been alive for two centuries, he could not deny the warm feeling of someone caring that much for him. Although he loved his job on the guard and protecting his masters, he could not deny that it made him feel good that someone was putting him first. As they reached the entrance to the castle, he stood next to Kiera and turned to face her, only to see him already staring at her.
“I protect you,” Kiera reiterated, and Demetri could only smile.
“We need to go in. I do not know what has happened yet, so I do not know what we will be walking into, but let me do the talking, okay?” Demetri asked quietly. “This is important. You need to show them respect, and they will not be happy with what has happened.”
Kiera gave a short nod. “I will not allow you to be hurt,” Kiera stated, lifting her chin in defiance, and Demetri let out a sigh as he shook his head before turning back to the door and opening the door swiftly.
---
The doors to the throne room slammed open, and Aro, Marcus and Caius almost jumped in shock at the sudden abruptness. Nobody entered the room without the okay from one of the kings, and Caius was in a tether before they looked at three separate faces. Jane’s face was screwed up in anger, completely apoplectic with rage. Alec could barely control his powers, wisps of black smoke exiting from and retreating into palms, and his usual blank façade was dropped. Lastly was Felix whose entire body was tense, as if ready to fight anyone that came across him. They were even unable to form any coherent thoughts as they strode into the room, eyes darting around. The unease from the three guards put the three kings on edge, only having seen them this tense a few times over the millennium. However, the other thing they noticed was that the fourth guard, Demetri was missing, and this only caused further concern. Immediately all three kings stood up, on guard.
“What happened? Where is Demetri?” Caius hissed, causing all three guard members to look at him quickly.
“It was that vampire,” Jane spat. “The one we saw in Germany. We finally tracked her down, and she attacked us, and kidnapped, Demetri.”
Aro immediately strode forward and grasped Jane’s hand, closing his eyes, before anyone could ask Jane any further questions. It was apparent they could not get a proper thought or answer with how enraged they all are. He watched as she was able to ignore the feeling of Jane’s power, to then holding her hostage, her threat when Demetri was attacked, and then decapitating all three vampires within fifteen seconds, after Jane ignored her warning before disappearing with Demetri into the shadows. He then walked to the other two guards and watched and read their thoughts and how they compared to Jane’s. Alec was livid that Jane had been held hostage, and unable to use his powers against her, due to his concern for his sister. Felix was furious that she had gotten away with Demetri, and now had no way to track her down, however, he did have begrudging respect for how quickly she took them all down, and finally was Jane’s humiliation at being caught off guard, and that someone was able to stop her power, and stop it working for someone else.
Before anyone could say anything further, Aro opened his eyes and stared at his three guard members. “Leave us,” he commanded, his voice not betraying his true thoughts and emotions surrounding the situation at hand. At once, the three guard fled the room, and Aro turned to look at his soul-brothers, his face dropping its stone appearance, to show a combination of concern and worry and excitement. Without waiting for Caius or Marcus to ask what had happened, Aro started pacing backwards and forwards.
“So,” he begun. “Jane provided a small amount of truth towards what happened, but their memories made a lot more sense.”
“Just tell us, Aro,” Caius sighed, frustrated.
Aro let out a little giggle, before nodding in agreement and continued. “The girl, the unknown vampire, knew she was being tailed. She asked why they were following her, and when Jane attempted to use her power against her, she was able to withstand it, before she disappeared into the shadows and grabbed Jane, holding her hostage, a combination of herself and the shadows meaning Jane could not move. Demetri and Felix explained why they were following her, and she had never known she was a vampire. She kept mentioning a place called HYDRA, and experiments. She had no clue that there was even a Volturi. When Demetri told Jane to be patient, after he promised that if she came with us, she would not be harmed, she protected Demetri and warned them if they harmed Demetri, she would kill them all. Jane began to speak, and from her thoughts, she was going to harm Demetri or her, and the girl must have picked something up, because she decapitated Jane using her blade, Felix with her shadows, and Alec with her strength. The last thing Alec saw was her disappearing into the shadows with Demetri with her.”
At his explanation, Caius and Marcus just stared at him, the room was in complete silence. Aro began pacing backwards and forwards again, and all that could be heard was the sound of his shoes on the stone ground.
“To reiterate,” Caius began, speaking slowly. “She was able to control her shadows to the extent that they held Jane, a vampire, down, and attack Felix. She was able to take down three of our elite guards in mere seconds, avoid the power of Jane, and has disappeared with Demetri.”
Caius then jumped to his feet and walked to the wall, punching it, “FUCK!”
For the first time in centuries, Marcus looked more interested and alive than he had since his mate, had been torn from his arms and destroyed.
For the following three hours, the kings stayed inside their throne room, deciding to delay any further trials until they had produced the plan to find Demetri and the unknown vampire. Nobody had been allowed in the room, even their private guards were made to stay and wait outside. Not even the vampires could hear anything that was being said in the room, except for the occasional explicit language from Caius.
It hit hour five they had been alone in the throne room, and it was dark now. The vampires had not even considered going to a study or the library, considering they had removed everyone from the room, and were still bouncing ideas off one another. It was then however, when a loud knock was made on front door to the throne room. All three kings looked at each other, knowing they had ordered everyone to leave them be, so for someone to be knocking, must have been out of their mind. After Aro called out for them to enter, all three of them appeared stunned.
Demetri Volturi had just walked into the throne room, walking halfway into the room before dropping to his knee and bowing his head.
“Masters,” he said lowly, making sure to show no fear. However, the three kings barely acknowledged him. Instead, their sights were set on the other vampire that walked alongside Demetri. She had long black hair that was in a high ponytail, even with it starting on the top of her head, it reached to her waist in beautiful waves. Her nose was small and straight with the smallest of upturn at the end. She had high, regal cheekbones, and a defined jawline. Her eyes were large, with blood red irises. They were framed with long black eyelashes, and she had perfectly sculptured eyebrows, and her skin had no imperfections or blemishes, but was still tan, showing her heritage, due to her not becoming paper white upon her vampirism.
Caius looked over her curiously. She was wearing a skintight suit, where every part of her body was covered in fabric except her neck, head, and hands. On her feet were a pair of combat boots, and he could see a sheen of metal coming from her left hand. Upon closer inspection, he noted that the hand was the metal, and there was no skin there at all. He then saw the weapons she had on her person, a multitude of guns and knives were on her waist, and thighs, with two long swords on her back. However, it was how she held herself, that really caught Caius’ attention. She walked strong, regally and her movements were fluid. However, he could see that she was trained in combat by the way she moved, and especially with how she moved her eyes, looking at all the entrances and exits. Assuming this was the vampire they were looking for; he was not surprised to see that her eyes would catch the shadows that filled the room from the small lighting showing themselves. Though he did have to contain his surprise at how the shadows acted around her. They were moving, as if trying to get closer to her, and from how she looked, she wanted to be closer to them too.
While Caius looked over her, analysing, Marcus was opening his bond sight, wanting to see if anything changed, especially knowing that if this was the vampire that kidnapped Demetri, why she did not want him harmed. He was curious about her in general, of course, but became even more intrigued when he looked between the vampire and Demetri, seeing a bond of such sibling familiarity, and it was indeed intriguing, given they had only known each other for mere hours, and the bond was strong. He then looked and noticed another bond that tied her to Volturi. He looked over where the bond directed his eyesight, and contained his shock at seeing a bright blue line that was seen attaching Caius to the vampire. One of a parent. A father, daughter bond. Curious, was all Marcus thought and he sat back in his chair, ready to advise them of the bonds tying her to people here, if required.
Lastly was Aro, who looked between annoyed and extremely excited. He was beyond angry that she had thwarted his strongest guards, especially Jane and Alec, who he relied on so much, but at the same time, a vampire of her power and skill. He wanted her. No, he needed her.
“Demetri,” Aro started, and upon his word, Demetri then stood at his full height.
Before Aro could step forward and grasp his hand, Demetri then turned to face the vampire, who stood extremely close to his side, and Aro looked at them curiously, at how the female was holding onto his robes, but not out of fear. Like she was ready to fight and pull him to safety as required. He was able to read the very slight amount of body language she was exuding, and it was not fear for herself, but rather fear for Demetri.
“Master’s,” Demetri began, realising that Kiera was not going to bow or say anything. He cannot say he was surprised but he just hoped that the kings did not take offence.
Demetri took a step forward and began to hold out his hand.
“This is Kiera.”
