The Story Of Souls. (…Mates)

Summary:

Soulmates. The concept is thrown around with different meanings and adaptations from story to story.

But in this world, it’s similar to a concept where at a certain age, you’ll be told when you’ll meet yours.

For Black Hat…. It’s after he perishes in a war against mages and all the good people who are afraid of the Eldritches that used to live on earth.

(There aren’t a lot of soulmate Paperhat fics that I’ve seen sooo… I’m fixing that.)

Im never going to finish this-

Notes:

POV’s change and will be listed here. Along with translations for certain languages.

Chapter Text

The night air was crisp in the dark forest in the newly founded land of Mexico. The colonists who ventured there found native settlers and quickly became accustomed to them. The natives offered shelter and food for protection from the beasts that live in the wood.- …..

I do think I’m getting ahead of myself though. Let’s back it up to what this story is really about.

In this world soulmates are a huge deal with most people. Once you reach a certain age you are told the time and place where your other half will be waiting. For some, it’s at their favorite restaurant. Others it’s across the world. For one individual, it’s after he dies. And this person isn’t really a person, he’s an eldritch lord named Black Hat.

He’s lived on earth for millennia and with his other half, the good half as they say, White Hat, along with their other two siblings. They are worshiped by many and are given sacrifices weekly.

All four have the same soulmate counter. They meet their significant other after they parish. They don’t know how that works but they can’t dwell on it because soon after they found this out settlers came to their land and slaughtered the worshipers and natives.

They brought mages to incapacitate the eldritches after they heard of their power. All hell broke loose and the four were slain and killed. Being buried in a tomb, never to be found or heard from for many many years…

-

-

Now where would a story go if that was the end, hm? No, no, no. That isn’t the end at all. Things will get much more wild and crazy as this story continues. Just wait, and. See.

Chapter 2

Summary:

Some backstory for our silly little bagged man

Notes:

POV is Flug’s for backstory on his part, then goes into to explain some details

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

A rather tall, skinny man jumped into the pit that he opened up a few hours before, “Argh!..” he grunted when he fell onto his feet, the women he was working with followed soon after, though she fell into her face.

“Mr. Slys, sir? What are you looking for again?” She asked quietly as she got up and dusted herself off, grabbing a flashlight so she can see better. The man, now introduced as Mr. Slys, looked at her and gave her a look before answering.

”I told you Sally, I’m looking for the tomb that is supposedly to hold the four eldritches from millennia ago. I want to see for myself if it’s true.” He said, continuing down the tunnel. Sally ran after him. She wasn’t so sure he was right but she was only a collage student… she doesn’t really have an opinion.

They walked down the corridor of tunnels, seeing markings on the walls. It told the story of the rise of the eldritches and their fall. And at the end showed the the tomb door

”I told you. Now we just have to open the door.” He said quietly, setting his backpack down and looks through it.

”How do we do that?” Sally looked around, not noticing that Mr. Slys was grabbing a big machete.

Slys came up behind the girl and smiled, “A sacrifice. So sorry though, you were sweet and very smart, but not smart enough when I said they used to give weekly sacrifices to them.” And with that said, he sliced her head off as her body hit the ground, her head rolled a bit with her blond locks getting matted with blood.

Slys grabbed her head and started to pour the blood into a bowl. The door creaked open and inside showed—…!

-

Flug woke up with a jolt from horrible screeching and screaming. He got out of his makeshift bed and bolted to his small lab. The lights turned on and he went to the little box he had his experiment was in.

The creature stopped screeching and glares up at Flug, it had dark black skin like ash, one lone eye because the other he clawed out when he first came back into existence. It wore a small hat to fit its head and to cover it.

”Hello again, I know we didn’t get off on the right foot. But I’m Flug as you know and you are one the great eldritches.” Flug stated as he picks the small eldritch up. It still glares at him and tried to choke him out, but it’s hands were too small.

”That won’t hurt me bud, you are too small. Let’s get some food for you.” Flug smiled, his scarred face looking at the little eldritch.

He took them both to the small kitchen and set the creature in a stool at the island and started making him some pancakes.

Little did Flug know, the eldritch was already starting to form a plan to get his power and authority back. It might not kill the crazy scientist, but he won’t allow him to leave. No, Black Hat will have use for him in time.

POV is of Black Hat when he first came into consciousness.

Chapter Text

Black Hat slowly came back to life from his slumber, he looked around the weird clean room.

He had two thoughts when he looked around. For one. He had two eyes again, the eye that was taken from him all those years ago was back. His second thought that he was FUCKING TINY. He some how shrunk. He was the size of a toddler.

He growled lowly… at least he had some sort of hat covering his head, soon he’ll have it grow to be his amazing top hat again. Whoever brought him back must have a death wish of some sort..

As if on cue, the whole reason for Black Hat’s resurrection walked into the lab. He had on the stereotypical lab coat, blue jeans, and a baggy shirt. His face was covered in scars from an accident and some sort of surgical procedure.

Black Hat already hated him.

The man looked at Black Hat and smiled. “Hello! I’m so happy you’re up. You must have slept well having you aren’t screeching anymore.” The man said, Black Hat doesn’t remember screeching at all..

”I’m Flug, do you have a name? Or something to call you?” Flug asked, walking closer with some water for Black Hat.

At the mention of his name Black Hat froze. That can’t be right… He can’t be Flug, that stupid counter said I’d meet him in some sort of office. This can’t be right. Why does he look so weird?-

Black Hat’s thoughts were interrupted when he was abruptly picked up by the scientist. He hated this, this was stupid and degrading.

“Seems you can’t talk yet, or you are refusing to talk to me. Do I scare you? I won’t hurt you.” He tried to reassure, smiling again. Black Hat scoffed inwardly.

You don’t scare me pendeja. You will fear me one day, I will break your bones and drink your blood while you WATCH YOU BASTARD HUMAN!

He started to growl as he thought of ways to murder the human. Flug however wanted to creature to like him, he carried Black Hat to the kitchen and started to make them both some food.

”I enjoy pancakes, you’ll like them.” He paused and looked at the eldritch, who sat and glared at him.
“You know I won’t hurt you, I just need… Nevermind…. You should tell me your name before I name you myself. I’m not very good at naming things, let that be a warning.” He laughed softly, knowing his first pet was named after an element on the periodic table.

Black Hat thought for a moment, but decided against giving into this pathetic human’s antics.

-

-

[After a few hours]

Black Hat was laying in the little box thing, it was more or less a bed but he threw out the blankets and pillows Flug placed to make him comfortable. He had clawed his eye out an hour earlier when Flug turned around.

He woke up and start screeching again, his throat burned and his vision wasn’t the labs, no. It was the temple when he was alive all that time ago, he was remembering his death visibly and painfully. After a few minutes Flug ran in and picked Black Hat up.

He hugged him and tried to get him to calm down, saying it’s okay and nothing bad is happening.

He walked to the kitchen and set him down to make Black Hat some food so he calms down some more.

The eldritch started to form his plan to gain back his power back. The scientist was starting to grow on him. Might be his instincts and the whole soulmate bullshit… but he couldn’t kill him. He would use him though. And use him he shall, he needs a new follower and this human seemed extremely devoted to him.

So Black Hat will wait. He’ll wait for his moment and then he’ll have Flug make a deal.

… Yes this could work. This will work.

Chapter Text

“Wait! No come back with that drill!” Flug yelled as he runs after the small eldirtch child. They ran all over the small, one story house. The place was trashed with food flung into the ceiling, walls, and the trash bin was knocked over with the garbage littering the floor.

Black Hat was currently running with a wireless drill, with it on at full power. He chuckled evilly as he drilled holes into the walls and broke anything and everything in sight

Flug groaned in annoyance as he realized the state of his home. “This is just great… now I have to get this all fixed and cleaned up.” He sighed and stopped trying to catch Black Hat. He goes to sit in the living room on the couch with the legs broken and the couch was laying on the floor.

He sat down and put his head in his hands. He started to tear up as he didn’t know what to do.

“Dios mío, en qué me metí…” He sighed sadly. Flug lied down on the couch and curled into a ball. After a few seconds Black Hat realizes he isn’t being chased anymore.

He went to the living room to find Flug crying on the couch. He was confused, usually when he did mischief, people would laugh it off and then ask for his forgiveness if they did something wrong, and then he would make them cry.

But… Flug’s crying wasn’t funny. It was sad and pathetic. It didn’t sit right with him. So he sat the drill down and plopped in front of the weeping man. He coughed to get his attention.

”What-what? What is it?” Flug asked like Black Hat was in need of comfort and not himself. Black Hat just looked at him, closing his eyes and starts to channel what little magic and power he has gathered. The house was spotless, the holes were gone, and all the damage done was gone.

“Wha- di-did, did you- oh dios mío!” He started and then exclaimed as Black Hat fainted from the magic he used. “You are one mysterious creature… but, thank you.”

-

-

Black Hat woke up a few hours later, grunting in pain from a headache. He was alone in the small lab again.

’Why did I fix the house.. that wasn’t evil it was nice.. maybe I’m getting worse with the knowledge of this stupid soulmate shit.’ He thought quietly.

He didn’t like that he couldn’t bring himself to kill such a pathetic and annoying human. He was fucking BLACK HAT! He could do ANYTHING… but killing his soulmate was not one of those things.

“… does he even know?..” He muttered lowly. Seems his voice is the same, only stuck in this tiny body. The body… wasn’t bad. Just annoying to get use too and the god awful snow hat is itchy and dumb looking.

Flug came back in after a few hours with some water for the eldritch. He stayed for a bit to create some sort of device, and tried to make more small talk but Black Hat never answered. Only really blinked and turned away so he could ignore the human.

-

-

Flug didn’t know. But he was starting to have dreams of a very tall eldritch who looked like an older version of the one he resurrected. It was odd, but he ignored it. It wasn’t really bothering him and he had no one to talk to about it. So ignoring it for later will do.

Chapter Text

The TV in the living room was blaring some sort of show. It was about villains, naturally, killing heros and ruining the world.

Flug allowed his experiment to start watching some television. It didn’t know how to work it, so Black Hat just yelled for him to change the channel or to turn it off.

-

Flug had to go out and buy a new one because the eldritch threw the drill at the TV..

-

Everything seems to be going better. Black Hat has chosen to try and corporate with everything and has only slightly given Flug a hard time. The TV incident being one and Flug’s newly wrapped arms from bite marks another.

Sighing, Flug looks over at the short eldritch. He knows this will turn out great. He read that eldritches were amazing leaders and the tomb he went to had the most powerful ones. He’s curious as to which one he resurrected.

Black Hat started yelling angrily as the TV switches to the news station for a broadcast.

“Shh! Hey, hey. The show will come back. It’s just the news station.” Flug tried to reassure, walking over and sitting with him.

As the news station panned to the anchor, she went on about some stupid heros successes with saving orphans or some bullshit. Then went on about some villains who were put behind bars. Eventually, the story went to tell about the infamous Dr. Flugsly and his raging devices and experiments that were terrorizing the people and putting heros in hospitals.

”We still don’t know where his base of operation is located, but we are still looking. The heros are working day and night to bring him to justice! Now a word from the main hero who is helping with the search, along with his knowledge of the Doctor personally.” The anchor concluded as the camera panned to the hero in question.

Goldheart.

Flug glares at the screen. The hero went to state that he’ll bring the crazy scientist to justice and get through to him that his work can be used for good. Flug scoffed and skipped the channel to one that started where Black Hat’s show stopped at.

”Those imbaciles idiotas have no idea what the hell they’re talking about. I don’t need help.” He growled under his breath, going back to the dining room table to finish his device.

Black Hat stared at the TV and then looked towards Flug. He hadn’t known this pathetic human would be considered a villain of all things. Nerdy? Sure. Dumb? Absolutely. Evil and villainous? Not even a thought until now.

Fuck. Maybe we are meant to be.. Wait what the fuck. WHY AM I THINKING THIS?!-

His thoughts were interrupted as Flug grunted in pain and clutched the table before he almost fell to the floor. Black Hat looked up and could smell some blood. That was.. odd to say the least, he knows he didn’t bite him that hard on the arms. Only enough to leave some bruises, not drawing blood….. yet.

He snapped out of his thoughts when he was picked up. He looked at the doctor and then to his legs where the smell was coming from.

“Let’s get you to bed. I need some rest too.” He chuckled a bit, setting Black Hat in the box he slept in and went to his room as he turned the lights off.

-

-

Black Hat climbed out of his box a few hours later, going to Flug’s room to see what his problem was. He opened the door and peaked in.

Inside was dark. There was a sheet less mattress, a small bed side table with a paper bag and goggles lying there, and a pile of clothes. On the mattress Flug lied there covered in a black blanket with the words, “YES, I’M STILLING WATCHING”, most likely referring to the… app on the TV called Netflix. Flug didn’t have a subscription so they were only able to watched cable.

Black Hat walked closer, the iron smell getting more intense as he gets closer. He ripped the pants that covered Flug’s leg. To say the least, he was great at bandaging himself up.

Flug’s leg indeed had blood on it, though that was an understatement. His leg was most likely broken, but was wrapped up nicely. For someone who knows the basics of patching themselves up.

Black Hat was confused and slightly frustrated that Flug didn’t even try to say he was hurt at all to him. And the scientist talks about everything to him… everything. He wanted to see if the doctor had any other injuries that need tending to but he didn’t get very far as Flug tossed and turned to face away from Black Hat.

”Nhmm… ..go away.. my name is Kennying. No-not..” Flug turned and hugged himself, mumbling about someone name, Mother and Father. And a boy named Keith. Black Hat didn’t know what a ‘Mother’ or ‘Father’ is but they don’t sound nice.

Black Hat walked out and closed the door. Flug probably just needs some sleep….

Maybe I’ll talk to him tomorrow.. he might like that after the day he had and this weird sleep dream thing he’s currently having. Black Hat thought and he agreed with himself as he walks to the lab and climbs into his box bed. He put the pillows and blankets he threw out back in, having found out they were comfortable.

After that he slowly fell asleep, dreaming of his powers and living in a top hat shaped mansion.

Chapter Text

Flug got hit in the back with some rubble, after being thrown into the building.

”GAH!” He grunted as he shoots at the stupid hero who decided the jump him. Grant it, he wore his signature bag and goggles out so of course he would get attacked by some wannabe hero.

He was just out to buy a new TV. The eldritch child decided to drill the old one when it wouldn’t change channels.. then threw the drill at the TV. It was fun cleaning the glass up.

But at this moment, Flug couldn’t even care. He was being used as a rag doll before he eventually shot the hero in the legs with a paralyzer.

“STOP VILLAIN! UNDO THIS NOW!” The hero, Light Bringer as he named himself, shouted at the Doctor.

”Why should I do that? You broke MY leg first! So it’s only fair you don’t get yours either.” Flug retorted as he limped over to the spot he left the new TV and groceries as he didn’t want to go back out.

He grumbled as some of his food was damaged, but he didn’t have time to dwell as he could hear more heros and police sirens. “Great.. these idiots.” He thought.

He waited for them to show, all the while he grabbed another weapon that he’s been working on. One that will give him enough time to get home without the eldritch child even knowing he left in the first place.

“STAND DOWN DOCTOR! WE WON’T HESITATE TO SHOOT YOU!” The idiotic police shouted into the mega phone. Honestly, do they think Flug will listen?

Flug scoffed at their approach. He looked at them and shrugged.

“Come and get me then.” He smirked from under the bag, setting his belongings behind him and holds his arms out, not threateningly.
The police were hesitant, along with the heros too. They didn’t know if the mad man was planning something or not.

He was. Not like he’ll be telling them though. Some heros decided to be “brave”, terrible choice really, and stepped closer to the Doctor.

“Doctor, we don’t want to hurt you. We just want to bring you in and ask some questions.” One of the heros tried to reason. Her name was Queen, she was the leader of the one hero group in this side of the city. She generally thinks she’s the best of the best and will be the one to capture the mad scientist.

Flug grimaced behind his bag, she was annoying to deal with at times. Scratch that, she’s always like this. Flug thought about embarrassing her and making a fool of her infront of all these heros and law enforcement.

He decided he will.

”Come on Queeny, we both know that’s not why. You just want the fame, right?” He said condescendingly, putting his hands behind his back as he puts the last bit of his device together in his hands.

The look on the hero’s face was amazing. She was offended and angered, but she didn’t try to deny the accusation.

”Just come with us and we’ll go easy on you. Might, go easy on you.” Queen said, trying to sound tough and to keep a cool head.

Flug smirked and smiled at them. Taking the device out.

”Sure. Let me just show you my latest invention.” He held it up and started talking like he was on a commercial.

“This is what I call the Time Disrupter! It will displace time for up to 30 minutes, enough time to go get ice cream and get home before your mommy and daddy know you were gone.” Flug mostly mocked the heros.

“It stops time and might cause some… temporary damage to anyone within the blast radius. Except for anyone who used it.” He added, showcasing the sphere-like device like a tell-a-marketer would.

The hero’s eyes widen in fear. Queen ran at him, grabbing her spear and almost stabbed him before he pressed the button.

Time stopped. It was slow going, but Flug was walking normally. He stepped out of the way of the spear and smiled at his work.

“Glad this worked. Would have been embarrassing if I was stabbed and made into a kabob.” He joked before walking to his purchases.

He headed home, not before drawing on the hero’s faces and destroying the police’s cars, weapons, and took some of the hero’s possessions. Along with their wallets.

He enjoyed the silence the time stopped world made. It was peaceful, quiet, and he could get home with ease.

He made it home, putting the groceries away and spent the remaining time left setting the new TV up.

Time slowly started again, it was slow but to Flug it all came back too fast and his ears exploded with delayed sounds and the eldritch screeching loudly, most likely had woken up and realized Flug wasn’t home. Wonderful.

The scientist doubled over, covering his ears to muffle some sounds. After about a minute, he stood up shakily and headed to the lab. He turned the light on and the screeching stopped once the eldritch could see him.

”Hey, I’m here. What time did you wake up?” He asked, knowing the answer to being silence but he had hope that the resurrected eldritch will speak to him one of these days.

He picked Black Hat up and took him to the living room again. He sat him and himself down.

“I bought a new TV, so don’t break it please. If you want it changed, come get me and I’ll change it for you. Okay?”

He waited and then added. “Nod if you understand me, please?”

The eldritch looked up at Flug and nodded, pointing to the TV. Flug grabbed the remote and got the cable set again.

-

-

After about two hours, the TV turned to a broadcast about Flug. He walked over and grumbled about how stupid they were and turned the show back on.

He started working again on a new device. His leg was killing him still. He really needed to bandage it up but he didn’t know how bad it would be. He’ll do it when the eldritch was asleep. He continued to after an hour or so he’ll send him to bed and then go to be himself.

-

-

Flug got up from his spot, grunting in pain from his leg, he ignored it and went to pick the eldritch up. He took him to the lab and tucked him in, thinking it was sweet that the child put the pillows and blankets back in the box.

He made his way to his own room and grabbed the first aid kit. He rolled up his pant leg and gasped slightly at the pain that shot through his leg.

His leg was broken, a few bones most likely shattered but only his femur poked out slightly. He told himself he’ll be fine, he just has to put it back in place and then patch it back up.

//

He took a deep breath, ‘in and out’ he told himself before he grabbed his left leg and snapped it out of its temporary position. He screamed, shoving his shirt sleeve into his mouth to muffle his sounds.

Flug looked at his leg and then snapped it back into its position, grabbing some gauze and bandages, wrapping his leg up. Flug grabbed the small bedside desk and stood up, stretching his leg out.

//

“This should do… I should sleep, god I’m tired..” He laid back down and slowly relaxed, falling asleep into a dream. It started out fine, but slowly started to become a nightmare.

-

-

His nightmare was about his parents. They were praising his brother like usual and ignored him and said they’re hellos and good jobs to his little sister. Man he missed her.. Flug walked out of his childhood kitchen and walked to his room to do homework.

In the dream bedroom, he heard his parents marching up to his room.

  “This dream again.” He thought.

He waited for his parents to come and yell at him after his ‘brother’ slipped out that he identified as a male now.

“Michelle! Why did Keith say you were trans!? You are a GIRL.” His ‘mother’ screamed at him. His ‘father’ just crossed his arms and shook his head

”This is disappointing. You are a very nice girl, you beautiful. Why are you throwing your beauty away to be a boy?” His ‘father’ said, looking down at Flug who faces away from them.

”She’s confused. It’s just a phase, she’ll grow out of it and then she’ll be out little girl again.” His ‘mother’ said sweetly as she patted Flug’s head and then smacked him when he rolled his eyes and scoffed.

“My name is Kennying. No-Not Michelle Mother. I am a boy and it’s not a phase.” He said coldly, pushing past them to leave.

-

-

He woke up shortly after, he didn’t jolt out of bed normally he woke up from a cold chill going up his left leg. He looked down and saw that his pant leg was ripped.

“Weird.. he got out of his box again… great.” Flug muttered and stood up, wobbling slightly from his leg being numb. He walked to the lab and found that the eldritch was waiting for him.

“Did you get up and rip my pant leg?” Asking like he doesn’t already know the answer—..

                             “Yes.”

Chapter Text

 “Yes”

The gruff, scratchy voice said calmly. Flug starred, shell-shocked.

The eldritch looked at Flug. He rolled his eye and spoke again, more annoyed.

“If you’re just going to stare I can go back to not talking to you.” He scoffed, slowly turning away.

“Wait no! I’m just surprised! So you can talk now?-“

“I could always talk, you intolerabilis puer.” He barked, getting tired of being degraded.

“Sorry, sorry. But why didn’t you talk to me before?”

“Because you’re a fucking idiot. And I don’t like you.”

“… That’s.. okay, that’s fair I guess.” Flug rubs his neck and looks away.

“Will you talk to me now?”

The eldritch stayed silent before agreeing.

“Yes, I suppose I’ll talk now. But I still hate you.” Black Hat growled.

“That’s fair. Umm.. what’s your name? I don’t know what to call you, and you already know my name.”

“…It’s Black Hat.” He looked at Flug in the eyes. Flug’s widened slightly and Black Hat feared that he already knew they were soul mates…

Oh no. This is bad.. please don’t know, please don’t know..

“Wait- Black Hat?! You were the most powerful eldritch!-“

“WERE?! I STILL AM YOU BASTARD!”

“Sorry! Sorry! But I read about you and I can’t believe I brought YOU back! I hoped I did and now that I know… I can’t contain my excitement!” Flug flapped his arms around in a stimming motion as he tried to contain his excitement.

Black Hat watches him and was confused with his arm flapping. His face almost showed a slight hint of blush but he shook his head and told himself to stop feeling these pathetic emotions. But he sighed knowing that the scientist had no idea about their soul mate bond.

Flug calmed down a bit and picked Black Hat up. He smiled and hugging him close. Black Hat stiffened from the hug, his undead heart felt like it was starting to beat faster and faster. His body relaxed, but he stopped his arms before he almost returned his hug.

Flug didn’t mind, he was just happy he did something right for once.

“Can you let me go now?” Black Hat growled lowly.

“Oh, yea sorry.” Flug set him down and stepped back a bit.

“I’m going to go change, you can go watch some TV if you want.” Flug walked back to his room to change.

Black Hat considered following him, but he walked to the living instead of bothering him again. He turned the TV on and waited for Flug.

Flug returned ten minutes later, he went to start making some breakfast for the two of them. He started putting together home made batter to fry in the pan for some fluffy pancakes. Black Hat walked over and sat at the table.

Flug placed a plate of pancakes infront of Black Hat and one for himself.

“Hope you enjoy the pancakes. It was my sister’s recipe.” He said quietly, taking his fork and starts cutting into his pancakes.

“You have a sister?” Black Hat eyed him, poking at his food. He doesn’t actually care, he just wants to put the attention off of himself for a minute.

“… I had a sister. She isn’t alive anymore.” Flug sighed sadly, looking away.

“Oh. Sorry to hear that..?” Black Hat isn’t good at comforting people. He didn’t make any eye contact from how uncomfortable he was feeling.

“It’s okay. She passed a while ago, I’m over it mostly.” He wiped his eyes from a few tears. Flug tried to not get emotional from the talk of his sister.

Black Hat thought for a second, he didn’t want Flug to be sad and depressed while they talked. But he also didn’t want to ask about the soul mate bonds… But it was about as good a time as ever to ask.

‘There’s no way Flug knows anyway.

“So, Flug. You know of soul mate bonds and the counter, correct?” Black Hat asked vaguely.

“If you’re asking me to bring your soul mate back, no. One eldritch is enough sorry.” Flug almost snapped but he stopped himself, standing to clean his plate.

That hurt. Black Hat doesn’t why, but his chest hurt when he heard Flug basically say they aren’t soul mates. Might just be the one-sided bond, but it hurt to hear it.

“That’s not what I meant. From what I know, humans usually have their mate by this point. Where’s yours?” He asked, turning to look at Flug who stayed facing away.

“….I don’t have one. I haven’t gotten my counter yet. I think it’s so stupid, you’re supposed to get it around your twenties. But not me, I haven’t even gotten a hint.” Flug clutched the towel, he was using to dry his plate, tightly. He was clearly upset, not wanting to think that he’ll be alone forever.

Black Hat felt compelled to tell him. To let him know he’s not alone, but his pride wouldn’t allow him. He didn’t want to think that a mear human is his destined mate.

Flug finished drying his plate and took Black Hat’s to do the same. He knew he was being pathetic for complaining. He knew he was destined to be alone forever, but he can ask Black Hat when he gains his power back that he’ll still be of use to him.

He hopes his new eldritch lord will have use for him. Even if he’s just a human.

Chapter Text

“Let me get this straight. Instead of contacting me or a high up, you yell at him to stand down and then charge at him?” GoldHeart snapped, visibly angry at the idiotic heros.

“We-well sir, he seemed suspicious and he had this device with him!-“ Queen tried to argue but was cut off.

GoldHeart yelled at her, “I don’t want to hear it! He used his device because you came at him, am I correct? So he clearly was out for some essentials and not to cause any harm.”

Queen looked down, she regrets everything. She was paralyzed now from the blast. The doctors that examined her don’t know if it’s permanent or not.

“I’m sorry GoldHeart. I won’t do it again, I swear.” She pleaded apologetically.

“I know you won’t because you’re going on extended leave. You aren’t to return to work until you can prove that you won’t jump the gun.” GoldHeart, turned away to look out the window, he wasn’t going to look at her as she sobbed and left the meeting room.

“Wasn’t that a bit harsh? I mean sure she messed up, but you didn’t have to send her on leave.” A sidekick spoke up. He wasn’t aware of how the hero world worked yet. GoldHeart almost felt sorry for the kid, but he’ll learn eventually.

“That’s how it works. She is also in need of recover from whenever hit her.” GoldHeart said before sitting down and holding his head in his hands.

The heros in the room shuffle out to give him space. One person walks in and sits down next to him.

“Keith, take a deep breath. Alright?” Miss Heed asked as she patted his arm.
“It’ll be okay, I promise.”

She was trying to be reassuring. It was sweet hearing from his soulmate, but he don’t know if he could believe that.

“You don’t know that Cece.. I think he’s getting stronger material to paralyze a top tier hero and permanently damage the squad she brought with dementia. I don’t want to think he did this on purpose, but he needs to be taken in.” GoldHeart stressed and he held his head.

“… I know.. I know..” Miss Heed said quietly. She hugged her husband, trying to comfort him.

“I know he’s.. your family, but you have to take in consideration that he needs to be taken in, whether that be alive or dead.” She said sadly, but firmly. It hurt to hear, GoldHeart couldn’t do it but he had to if he wanted to save the remaining civilians and heros from getting hurt.

Meanwhile.

Black Hat was talking to Flug more, helping out, and not being such an ass. He still couldn’t tell him they were soulmates. It hurt his pride, but everyday he lived with him. Saw him. Talked to him. Watched him sleep. He couldn’t stop thinking about him and his new emotions didn’t help either with his heart beating faster and his throat closing up when he talks to the scientist.

He considered to stop talking again but then Flug would visit him day after day.. after day and talk to him. He didn’t want to do that. But the urge to tell him… it was driving him insane.

“So.. with your powers. How are you going to be able to gain them again?”

Black hat was taken out of his thoughts from Flug talking to him again.

“Sorry?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.

“You know, your powers. And to get you out of this toddler body and into your magnificent eldritch body.” Flug said ecstatically. Black Hat looked at Flug and nodded, now he remembered. He almost forgot he was stuck in this godforsaken body.

“There are several ways to do it. I can eat souls to gain it all back, sacrifices work too.. or starting a cult and all who join it will give me my power.” He answered almost matter-o-factly. Black Hat kept starring at Flug as he talked, looking at ever individual scar and wondering how it happened. The odd thing was the black misty-ness that emitted from around his head, like his face wasn’t really his face.

“Okay, I can work on that. In the meantime, want lunch? I got mac n’ cheese, spaghetti, chicken salad, anything you can find in my fridge.” He offered as he looked around the pantry and the inside of the fridge. Black Hat watches him walk around looking for food.

“What’s the one dish you prepared before? I enjoyed that one..” He felt embarrassed that he enjoyed something human, but he did and he couldn’t deny it.

“Oh, that was Mexican street corn on a plate and some tacos. You want that?” Flug looked at Black Hat, noticing him turning away like he wasn’t just starring at him.

“Yes, I’d like that to eat.” He said quietly and quickly, walking to the living room to get out of the awkwardness. Black Hat ignored how his heart ached just seeing Flug, being near him, watching him sleep. Or sometimes going into his room and sleeping by him before he wakes up.

It annoyed Black Hat to no end that these feelings keeping causing him to care, it almost hurt when he refused. He has tried asking Flug what soulmate bonds do but he just gets angry and says to not worry because ‘They aren’t important.’, and that still hurts every time.

He decided to try again because… he didn’t know why, it just hurt too much to hear those words. So trying until he says anything else will be good.

“Flug. Once someone has a soulmate, does anything change with them?” He asked, looking at the TV like this was just another question.

“Thought I said it’s too asking me these questions…. But.. yes something does change. My brother,” He spat with vile and malice like a curse. “Has a mark under his eyes that matches his soulmate’s marks above her eyes. I don’t have one if you are wondering, since I don’t have a soulmate.” He hated talking about this topic. He didn’t understand why Black Hat was so interest in it, he wasn’t going to bring back his dead soulmate, if he even had one.

‘Can eldritch’s have soulmates?’ He thought as he finished cooking the corn.

“Corn and tacos are ready.” Placing the plates down, Flug sat and started eating as Black Hat got up onto the chair.

They are in silence, or Black Hat tried to as he ignored whatever Flug was saying. He would steal glances and watch Flug’s face change expressions and be expressive when he talked. He wondered why his face was so scarred and sewn back together so much, he would’ve asked but Flug already finished eating and seemed to be heading off to bed.

“I’ll be in my room, make sure to go to bed at a good time and to not steal food or stay up too late.” He instructed before heading off to bed. Black Hat finished eating and then sat back down in front of the TV to watch whatever is on the television.

‘He’s really odd. He wears the bag when he goes out like he hates him face… weird.. his face isn’t that bad.’ Black Hat’s thoughts soon were consumed with Flug again and he seethed as he crossed his arms and glares at TV in hatred.

Chapter Text

“Kennying! Come on!” The girl chanted as she dragged the boy to the science room. She walked in and bee-lined to one of the tables. She brought out one of the beakers and pushed Kennying in front.

“See, I fixed it! Now you can finish it and get an A!” She tried to be cheerful, in reality she felt guilty that she ruined his experiment and he got one day to fix it.

”… Thanks Cece..” Kennying sighed as he got to work to try and get all his progress back.

Neither of the two noticed some other classmates peering into the room from the door. They snickered silently as they watched Kennying mix some liquids into the beaker and then turn the burner on.

Kennying continued, not seeing that the beaker was starting to foam with a red color. It started to pop and spark before Kennying had any time to react, Cecelia screamed and jumped behind a counter.

Kennying didn’t get that. He froze as he saw the beaker explode in his face as he screamed in pain and terror, tears falling from his eyes, a black mist taking over his already scarred face as it burned through the green recycling bin he wore for a hat. His face was covered in black looking tar like substances with a black mist emitting around his head.

“Oh my god.. Kennying!? Are you okay?!” She got up and rushed to see him, only for Kennying to stare and run out of the science room and down the hall.

stupid.

Stupid.

STUPID!

Flug woke up in a cold sweat. He felt his head and started to tremble when he remembered what happened. He tried to forget as much as he could, but he couldn’t.. forget.

He saw that Black Hat was laying beside him, asleep. Flug tried to wipe what remained of his eyes of any tears that might try and stay. He picked Black Hat up but decided that it felt nice having someone to sleep by. He set him down and laid back down.

-

Black Hat opened his eye to look at Flug, as he wasn’t asleep but he wanted Flug to think he was.

It was weird when Black Hat woke up as he felt his head started to hurt. He got up and walked to Flug’s room where he was having another nightmare. Black Hat didn’t enjoy when Flug was upset against his will, so he laid in the mattress that he called his bed and hugged Flug’s arm.

Flug started to calm down and hugged the eldritch back. He stopped shaking violently, but a trace of his nightmare still remained as he clung to the small eldritch tightly. Black Hat didn’t really mind… if it stopped his slight headache he couldn’t complain.

Black laid there again when Flug laid him back down. He watched Flug fall back asleep, seeing that the scientist was trembling still. He patted his arm and head to try and ‘comfort’ him, it worked… because Flug started to slowly stop and calm down. Black Hat stared at him and at his hands.

He had some of his powers. He can calm someone with his hands again. Black Hat never used it, his brother White Hat did though. He used to care for the worshippers and village people when they got stressed or scared.

Black Hat thought it was pointless to help people since he was the embodiment of evil. But he never realized he could actually use it.

That’s nice to know. He supposed.

Black Hat guessed it was good to have this ability since Flug was so prone to terrible nightmares and feeling hateful towards himself. Black Hat hugged Flug’s arm again to help him feel better.

-

In the morning, Flug took Black Hat outside for once to get some more groceries. Black Hat was surprised by all of the tall buildings and people that walked the streets of all ages. He held onto Flug’s hand per his request, not because he wanted to. Totally.

They went to several stores. Mostly to get food for the fridge and pantry, but some Flug went into to get Black Hat something that he hoped he would enjoy. He kinda enjoyed the offerings, as he called them.

The two continued on their way. Flug kept his jacket hood up to hide his face from everyone and because he didn’t want some heros to attack him while Black Hat was with him. Once they came into a toy store because Flug wanted a model plane.

A mother walked by and saw Flug and Black Hat by the planes and she started to gush over how cute Black Hat looked.

“Oh how cute is he! You have a very adorable son sir.” He smiled, patting Black Hat on the head.

“Oh.. uh, yes. Thank you, um don’t pat him please, he doesn’t like it.” He said, pulling Black Hat towards him. He almost burst out laughing when the mother said that the eldritch was his son.

“So sorry. You have a wonderful father, he must care about you a lot.” She said as she patted her own son’s head and walked off to the BB guns.

Flug snickered but stopped once Black Hat glared at him and stomped on his foot.

“I am NOT adorable. I am an eldritch god.”

“Okay- sorry, I won’t-“ He didn’t get to finish before Black Hat snapped at him again.

“Now give me her soul.” He said blankly as he glared at the scientist.

“Uh.. what. I can’t- how am I supposed to??”

“If you give her to me as an offering, then I can take her soul.”

“And then… and then you get your powers back!” Flug said ecstatically. He now knows how to get Black Hat’s powers back.

“I have an idea now. We can talk when we get home, I doubt that heros aren’t listening right now.” He said as he looked around the store for any cameras or anyone listening to him. They left after paying for the planes and quickly went home.

-

“He has a son?”

Chapter Text

A blood curdling scream ripped through a women as she falls to the floor with a THUD, Flug started to drag her down to the lab where Black Hat was. The Doctor kicked the body, skidding it over to the demon who took one glance before taking the soul that was now stuck inside the women, leaving the body to rot and decay now that no life-source is left inside.

“This weapon of yours works wonders, what’s it made of.. again?” Flug asked for the second time.

Black Hat finished with the soul and gave the Doctor a bored look, “I thought I explained this but alas, I have to do it again. It’s made out of a special material when it has killed a mortal it will trap the soul inside the flesh-body. It makes it easier to kill these humans instead of getting a live one.”

Flug nodded, he was still unsure of it but he did have to give half of his own soul in order for Black Hat to bring it back into existence.. he decided that this is fine.

Black Hat eyed the human one last time before blinking the dead body to the disposal bin. He’s been getting stronger with every few souls and slowly getting his abilities back.

The demon was surprised with how easily the Doctor was able to get so many humans to follow him home, but he won’t ask because he genuinely doesn’t care, what he does care about is why the calendar has balloons and a cake on the 23rd which is today. He would have asked the Doctor but again, he doesn’t feel like asking.

Meanwhile, Flug left to the kitchen as he sighed and debated if he should ignore his birthday this year or bake himself a cake and maybe share it with Black Hat.. ‘No, he won’t really care and probably won’t understand either.’ He concluded.

The demon in question leaves the little lab and walks to the living room to watch some more of that Novela show that’s on regularly. He quite enjoys the drama and Flug gets super into it so it’s even funnier.

He decides to ask about the weird characters on today’s date anyway as he gets the show on.

“Flug, what’s with the weird characters on the calendar for today?” He didn’t face the Doctor but he could feel how he stiffened through the soul-bond they both undoubtedly share.

“That’s um, it’s my birthday today. I wasn’t going to do anything for it but if you want something I could make you some food.” Flug said, relaxing a bit before he goes to sit on the couch. He looked at the TV and smiled slightly, if he could, at his favorite show.

Black Hat stopped once it came to The Novela, not looking at Flug still but the gears in mind turn a bit and he remembers a memory of something similar to a “Birthday” that his brother always had a stupid party for him and other two eldritches.

“Why don’t you make yourself something, y’know for your special day or something.” He grumbled out, not fully meaning it but he didn’t feel like having the Doctor gloomy all day over it.

The Doctor shifted a bit, surprised that the eldritch actually suggested for him to celebrate his birthday instead of serving the demon. He was excited cause he could make himself his favorite dish but also share it with the demon, if he wanted some anyway.

Flug jumped up and went to the kitchen to start on his favorite dish and some fluffy pancakes for his cake. The demon turned to watch him and rolled his eye as he continued to watch the show.

As the Doctor continued to cook a Mexican dish and the stove top ready to start flipping pancakes, he called for the eldritch to come over and try some the food.

Black Hat was hesitant since he hasn’t had this type of food yet but he ate it reluctantly, finding it delicious, he happily ate more before Flug told him to sit down and wait for him to plate it.

After about twenty more minutes or so, Flug sets the plate in front of Black Hat but before he even set it down, the demon starts eating the meal. The human chuckles, starting to eat his own after he set the plate of pancakes down.

The two sat in comfortable silence, eating away. Flug diligently wished himself a happy birthday, happy he got to spend it with someone rather than no one.

The demon also silently wished his unbeknownst soulmate a happy birthday, a happy feeling showing up in his chest.

Notes:

Hopefully you forgive me with how late I’ve been and for this- also I know it’s short, I just wanted to give you guys something for Flug’s birthday ^^
