Chapter Text
Maura sat on the couch, engrossed in the magazine she'd found earlier. Beacon lay nearby, her head resting on Maura's lap, as she absentmindedly flipped through the pages. Jane was bustling around the kitchen, the clinking of pots and pans signaling her efforts to prepare dinner.
As Maura turned the page, an article caught her eye: "Eight Easy Tips to See if Your Partner is Whipped." Intrigued, she began to read, a playful idea forming in her mind. She glanced over at Jane, who was now humming to herself as she chopped vegetables.
"Jane, have you ever heard of the term 'whipped'?" Maura asked casually, trying not to give away her intentions.
Jane looked up, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Yeah, why?"
Maura held up the magazine. "I was reading this article, and it mentioned some signs that indicate one partner might be 'whipped' by the other."
"Interesting, since when do you read those types of magazines?" Jane questioned
"Your mother must have left it on the coffee table." Maura shrugged
The evening continued and Maura vowed to give Angela back the magazine when she saw her next. As they lay in bed that night the article still stuck with Maura a little.
— — —
Maura sat at a quaint café, sipping her coffee as she waited for her sister Cailin to arrive. It had been a while since they'd had a chance to catch up, and she was looking forward to their lunch together. As Cailin walked through the door, Maura waved her over, a warm smile on her face.
"Cailin, it's so good to see you," Maura greeted her, rising from her seat to exchange a quick hug.
"Likewise, Maura," Cailin replied, returning her smile. "It's been too long. How have you been?"
Maura settled back into her seat, taking a sip of her coffee. "Busy, as always. But I can't complain. How about you?"
Cailin shrugged, her expression thoughtful. "Same old, same old. Anything interesting happening lately?"
Maura's cheeks flushed slightly. "Jane and I are getting used to living together."
The conversation continued touching many different topics when Maura stated "I was reading an article last night in a magazine about 8 easy tests to see if your partner is whipped. You know I usually don't read these silly types of magazines but Angela had left it."
Cailin leaned in, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Silly or not, it sounds like fun. Did you try any of the tests on Jane?"
Maura hesitated, unsure whether to confide in Cailin about her plan. But something about her playful demeanor put her at ease, and she found herself opening up to her.
"Well, I mentioned it to Jane, but I didn't actually go through with it. It felt... dishonest, somehow."
Calin nodded, her expression thoughtful. "I understand your hesitation, Maura. But think about it this way—relationships are all about communication and understanding. Maybe this could be a way for you and Jane to learn more about each other, to strengthen your bond."
Maura considered Calin's words, a new perspective beginning to form in her mind. Perhaps she was right. Perhaps this could be an opportunity for them to deepen their connection, to explore new aspects of their relationship.
"You know what, Calin? You might be onto something. Maybe I'll give it a try after all, it could be really fun" Maura said, a hint of determination in her voice.
And as she thought about the playful tests she could try on Jane, she couldn't help but feel a flutter of anticipation in her chest.
— — —
Maura got home just before Jane and hurriedly snatched the magazine and entering her study to re-read some of the simple tests they gave:
Does your partner allow you to dress them up?
Does your partner let you style their hair and choose their clothes? Try letting your partner get ready for dinner and then before leaving suggest a completely different outfit and see if they change before leaving. If you succeed you can put a point into the whipped category.
If you can get them to switch their hairstyle as well then bonus points. Congratulations on your partner being utterly devoted to you.
Do you wear the pants in decisions?
Try picking out a movie and see if your partner defaults to your choice. If you succeed put a point into the whipped category
Go for the trifecta and choose the restaurant and snacks also for bonus points. If you succeed put a point into the whipped category.
Do you wear matching outfits?

For a bonus point get the entire outfit to match.
Does your partner reply to you text messages within a short amount of time?

For a bonus point try this over three days straight.
Does your partner let you crash an outing with their friends?
Try inviting yourself along to an event with your partner and their friends. If they let you join in put a point in the whipped category.
Bonus points get them to change their outfit for that event.
Will your partner hold your purse while out?
Try to pass your course off to your partner in different situations. If you succeed put a point in the whipped category.
Bonus points have them hold your purse for over an hour.
Will your partner celebrate an absurd holiday with you?
Convince your partner to celebrate a half birthday, 8 month anniversary, or Flag Day. If you succeed put a point in the whipped category.
Bonus points if you get them to invite their friends over to celebrate
Does your partner let you give them pet names?
Try out an outrageous pet name for your partner and see if they allow it. Put a point into the whipped category if your partner allows you to use Love Nugget, Pookie, Boo-Boo, Hot Lips, or Boothang.
Bonus points if you get your partner to go by two of the names.
The article continues that if you scored 12 points or above in the whipped category then you can consider your partner whipped.
If you score 8-11 points then your parter admires you and is well on their way to being whipped
If you score under 8 points, does your partner even love you, just kidding, we know your partner loves you.
As Maura finished reading the article and starting to think about ways to try to test Jane, she heard Jane enter the house calling out from the kitchen.
"Hey Maur, I'm home and I brought dinner"
Maura smirked as she left the magazine on her desk and went to join Jane.

Chapter Text
Jane checked her watch for the third time, pacing around the living room in her grey suit pants and dark rust colored button down. Her hair down in a loose low ponytail. She glanced at the staircase leading up to the bedroom, a mix of impatience and amusement on her face. She loved Maura dearly, but her wife's meticulous attention to detail could sometimes test her patience.
Maura had suggested a date night out to dinner at one of Maura's favorite French restaurants. They were regulars visiting a few times a month and had met the chef Francisco once on their anniversary.
The week had been long closing out a particularly hard case and Maura knew they needed some alone bonding time. She suggested the dinner the night before as they were grabbing quick dinner on their way home.
Maura was upstairs getting ready when that article popped into her head and thought she may try the first set. She still wasn't sold on the idea of testing Jane without her knowledge but she thought she would give it a try and see how one test felt. She thought to herself rationalizing she regularly picked out Jane's outfit so it wasn't like she was doing anything more nefarious than her norm.
Jane always started getting ready after Maura and finished before her.
"Maura, we're going to be late!" Jane called up the stairs.
"Just a few more minutes!" came Maura's voice from the bedroom.
Jane sighed, shaking her head with a smile. She knew this routine well. Maura always wanted to look perfect, and while Jane appreciated her efforts, tonight she was eager to get to the restaurant. They had a reservation at a French place that had become one of her favorites.
Finally, Jane heard the click of heels on the wooden floor as Maura descended the stairs. When Maura appeared, Jane's breath caught in her throat. Maura looked stunning in a deep blue dress that hugged her curves, her hair styled in soft waves, and a hint of makeup accentuating her natural beauty.
"Wow," Jane said, unable to hide her admiration. "You look amazing."
Maura smiled, a hint of a blush coloring her cheeks. "Thank you, Jane. You look quite dashing yourself. But…"
Jane stepped closer, taking Maura's hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. "But, what Maura?"
Maura spoke softly. "Jane we clash a bit, with our colors? Burnt orange and blue don't quite mix." She stood next to Jane and gestured towards her deep blue dress and Jane's rust colored top.
Jane stood there confused for a few minutes. She looked back and forth a few times before stating "Clash? We both look good, Maura"
"You do look beautiful Jane, I just thought maybe our outfits should compliment each other." Maura said slightly bashful. "You know how I love to coordinate with you."
Silence settled for a moment between them.
"I could just go switch my dress, Jane." Maura continued slowly turning back towards the stairs.
"No" Jane exclaimed "No, I mean you look amazing it will be quicker for me to switch my shirt" Jane said turning to the stairs and dashing upstairs. Jane knew they would never make it out to dinner if Maura went to switch her outfit.
"The beautiful deep emerald top would compliment my dress perfectly." Maura called from the hallway.
"Got it!" Jane called as she made her way to the closet switching her shirts.
"And your black Armani pin striped pants would complete your ensemble perfectly." Maura called. She said through clinched teeth unknowing if she was pushing Jane too far. Early on in their relationship she had given Jane a lot of fashion advice but after the years and upgrading some of Jane's wardrobe, her advice wasn't always needed. Jane did have a knack to find an outfit that caused the butterflies to fly in Maura's stomach still after all this time.
"Pants too, geez Maura, ok hang on a minute" Jane said as loud noises came from the bedroom and Maura could hear clothes and hangers banging around. She thought to her self the closet was probably being pulled apart but she would deal with that later.
"And your new dress boots also Jane" Maura called out
"Yes, dear" Jane called out sarcastically and the sounds of shoes hitting the floor could be heard.
Maura felt guilt wander into her mind, was she being ridiculous. Before Maura could begin to question herself anymore Jane emerged at the top of the staircase stunning in the beautiful Gucci emerald green button down and black pin striped Armani pants. If Maura was honest the shoes she had on earlier would have gone great with the outfit but Jane's new dress bouts did look amazing completing the outfit.
"You look stunning." Maura said as she caught Jane's lips when Jane made it to the bottom of the stairs.
"Thank you. Now do we look like the power couple that we know we are?" Jane smiled as she held Maura's hand up and twirled her around.
"We do" Maura replied smiling at her wonderful wife.
"Great let's get a move on it before my stomach starts to digest itself." Jane laughed.
"Jane that is not scientifically possible because I know for a fact you had a meal not to long ago and I would venture to say you had a snack while I was getting ready." Maura chuckled hitting her arm "One more thing"
Jane spun towards Maura rolling her eyes "What now?"
Maura reached out to pull the low pony out of Jane's hair and ran her hand through Jane's hair. "There now we can proceed"
Jane leaned in for a kiss, then as if on cue her stomach grumbled. "It speaks" Jane laughed as she grabbed her wallet and keys opening the door for Maura.
They walked out to the car, Jane holding the door open for Maura before getting in herself. As they drove to the restaurant, they chatted about their day, enjoying the rare evening where they could relax and be just a couple, not weighed down by the pressures of their jobs.
The restaurant was as charming with an intimate atmosphere and a menu that promised a delightful culinary experience. They were quickly seated at a cozy corner table, the soft glow of candlelight adding to the romantic ambiance.
"This place is beautiful," Maura said, glancing around appreciatively.
"Yeah, it's become one of my favorites" Jane agreed, looking at the menu. "Any recommendations, Dr. Isles?"
Maura chuckled. "I think we should start with the escargot and perhaps the coq au vin for the main course."
"Sounds good to me," Jane said, closing her menu.
The waiter came by to take their order, and soon they were sipping on glasses of Bordeaux, enjoying the comfortable silence that often accompanied their time together. Jane reached across the table, taking Maura's hand in hers.
"I know I tease you about taking forever to get ready, but I really do appreciate how much effort you put into things," Jane said, her voice soft.
Maura's eyes softened. "I just want everything to be perfect for us. And I appreciate your patience, Jane. You always make me feel so loved."
Jane smiled, feeling a surge of affection for her wife. "That's because you are loved. More than anything."
Their food arrived, and they spent the next hour enjoying the delicious dishes and each other's company. The conversation flowed easily, touching on their favorite memories, plans for the future, and little things that made them laugh.
As they finished their meal, Jane leaned back in her chair, feeling content. "This was a great idea. We should do this more often."
"I agree," Maura said, her eyes twinkling. "It's important to take time for ourselves and nurture our relationship. Can we have the waiter take our picture before leaving?"
Jane nodded, reaching across the table to take Maura's hand again. "I'm just glad I get to do it all with you. Let's take a picture in the garden out front by the fountain"
Maura squeezed her hand gently. "That sounds perfect. And I love you, Jane." As she lifted her hand to her mouth placing a gentle kiss on the back of Jane's hand.
Maura asked the waiter who was more than happy to take a picture of the stunning couple. He actually took a few poses on Maura's phone and then bid the couple goodbye.
They left the restaurant, walking hand in hand under the city lights, feeling closer than ever. It had been a perfect evening, a reminder of the strength of their bond and the joy they found in each other's company.
As they drove back home, Jane glanced over at Maura, a mischievous smile on her face. "So, how about brunch tomorrow? There's this new place I've been wanting to try."
"Are you sure you can handle another wait?" Maura teased, her eyes sparkling.
Jane laughed. "For you? Always."
They arrived home, the night ending on a high note. As they walked into their house, Jane pulled Maura into a gentle embrace, feeling grateful for every moment they shared.
Yes, fashionably late or not, Maura was always worth the wait, Jane thought to herself as she watched her wife take off her heals looking more and more gorgeous with every day passing.
Later that evening while Maura was sitting in bed reading waiting for Jane to come up to bed, she thought back on the article and realized she had one point in the whipped category and even got the bonus point. She chuckled to herself realizing this was crazy but decided it was innocent fun and was determined to complete the next test.
Chapter 3: Can you get your partner to agree to the movie of your choice?

Chapter Text
Maura Isles sat on the edge of the bed, her phone in hand, feeling a mix of excitement and amusement. She dialed her sister Cailin's number, eager to share her little experiment.
"Hey, Maura!" Cailin's cheerful voice greeted her from the other end of the line.
"Hi, Cailin. How are you?" Maura asked, smiling at the sound of her sister's voice.
"I'm good, just got back from a run. What's up?"
"Well, you remember that magazine article you sent me about those relationship tests?" Maura began, glancing at herself in the mirror one more time to make sure everything was perfect.
"Of course! Did you actually try one of them?" Cailin asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Yes, I did, last week" Maura admitted, a hint of pride in her voice. "I decided to try the one about influencing your partner's outfit choices."
"No way! How did it go?" Cailin sounded eager to hear the details.
Maura chuckled softly. "It worked. Jane was getting ready for dinner, and I casually mentioned how nice she looks in the emerald shirt she wore last week. She ended up changing into a new outfit before we left."
Cailin laughed. "That's fantastic! I can't believe it actually worked. How did Jane react?"
"She didn't suspect a thing," Maura said, shaking her head with a smile. "She just took my suggestion and changed. It was a fun little experiment, but it also made me realize how much we influence each other in small ways."
"That's true. It's all about the little things in a relationship," Cailin agreed. "So, where are you two heading tonight?"
"We're going to the movies, I think I may try another test tonight" Maura said, feeling a flutter of excitement. "It's been a while since we had a nice night out."
"Well, you two deserve it. I'm glad you had fun with the test, Maura. But remember, it's all in good fun. Jane loves you just the way you are."
Maura smiled warmly. "I know, Cailin. And I love her just as she is. This was just a playful way to add a bit of excitement to our evening."
"I'm sure it will be a great night. Have fun, Maura, and give Jane my love," Cailin said.
"I will. Thanks, Cailin. Talk to you soon," Maura replied, feeling a sense of warmth and connection with her sister.
As she hung up the phone, Maura heard Jane's voice from downstairs. "Maura, are you ready? We don't want to be late!"
"Almost ready Jane!" Maura called back down
"We want to make dinner before the movie, if we don't get a move on it then we will miss the movie" Jane started to call out as she saw Maura emerging from the bedroom.
"Alright, let's go." Maura said stopping to kiss Jane at the bottom of the stairs. "I think we should eat at the little cafe by the theater."
"Really, I thought we could hit up Angelo's. It has been forever since we ate there and I am craving a calzone." Jane replied pouting a bit.
"Oh" Maura looked at her for a second then started "The cafe is so much closer to the theater."
Jane scowled for a second then replied "Fine, but next weekend your taking me to Angelo's"
Maura smiled and leaned in for a chaste kiss again "Deal"
As Maura and Jane sat at the small cafe finishing up their dinner they began discussing what movie they would see next at the theater. Jane had just finished her panini and was working on finishing her homemade chips. Maura was finishing her Cobb salad when she decided to propose a movie.
"I think we should see the Barbie movie tonight." Maura said glancing up at Jane as she took a bite.
It's just... Barbie?" Jane looked puzzled "I thought we could see Oppenheimer- it has history for you and blowing things up for me. Not to mention Emily Blunt is in it and she is one of both of our favorite actresses."
"That is true, but think about the message of empowerment from Barbie." Maura tried to argue.
"Maura, for real, I hate pink. I don't think I even owned a Barbie growing up." Jane rolled her eyes eating a chip.
"Jane, have you heard the fantastic reviews the Barbie movie is getting?" Maura said, her eyes bright with excitement as she continued to enjoy her salad. "It's supposed to be a wonderful blend of humor, nostalgia, and important social commentary and Kate McKinnon is in it and you think she is hilarious." Maura continued
"She is funny on Saturday Night Live." Jane spoke softly. Maura smiled at Jane and who was Jane kidding she had a hard time denying Maura anything. Jane took a few more bites and signaled the waiter for the ticket.
"So Barbie movie," Maura said.
"I mean, for real Maura, you really want to see that movie. Ughhhhh" Jane gasped "If you tell my mother I went to this movie I will never speak to you again."
The waiter walked over to the table with the check.
Maura started beaming she had really wanted to see the movie after reading reviews talking about the great message of positivity and inclusivity but she definitely never thought Jane would agree to go with her. The article flashed in her mind, and she felt a little guilt creep in again. She took a deep breath and then tried to reason with herself that this was a conversation that would have occurred with or without the article.
Jane grabbed her card back from the waiter and put it back in her wallet.
"Oh and another thing. If I do in fact agree to see the," Jane sighed "Barbie movie." Jane sighed again "Next weekend we eat at Angelo's and I don't have to do any shopping with you." Maura began to frown and Jane continued "Nope I get to watch ESPN and do nothing the rest of next weekend."
As they were headed out of the restaurant Jane reached out for Maura's hand. Maura grasped it bringing their hands to her mouth where she placed a kiss on the back of Jane's hand. "I can accept those terms." Maura replied.
Jane still couldn't believe she just bought tickets to the Barbie Movie. For a plot second she thought she must be dreaming or actually in a nightmare. She shook her head at herself and then headed off to the concessions to join Maura who had almost made it to the beginning of the line.
Maura ordered a pretzel, water and then looked over at Jane. "We really should just get pretzels and a small popcorn with no butter. These snacks are not the healthiest."
As Maura went to order for Jane also, Jane stepped in "Nope, hold on. If I have to spend the next who knows how long watching the Barbie movie, I am going to eat the snacks that I want."
Maura looked in a little bit of disbelief as Jane continued. "Large popcorn, with extra butter, Sour Patch kids, large Dr. Pepper, Oh and cookie dough bites." Jane continued looking at all of the selections and then glanced at Maura "What, the movie theater has the best snacks."
"And just a pretzel and water for me" Maura added to the attendant. She smiled and looked at Jane "You know none of this is healthy for you."
"And I know you will have me in yoga or an extra run or whatever you're planning." Jane smiled back with her eyes widening then continued "If I am going to this pink movie I am going to properly snack."
"Ok" Maura just smiled and shook her had at Jane.
As they found their seats, Maura couldn't help but notice the diverse audience. Families with children, groups of friends, and even some solo moviegoers filled the theater. She smiled, appreciating how a film could bring so many different people together.
"I can't believe this many people are here for a Barbie movie," Jane muttered.
Maura smiled. "That's part of the magic, Jane. It's resonating with so many people on different levels."
As the movie continued Maura could see Jane fidgeting more and more. She had finished most of her snacks but was still working on her popcorn. Maura reached over and grasped Jane's hand in hers and leaned her head on Jane's shoulder. This quieted Jane's movements for a bit.
Halfway through the movie, Jane glanced at Maura, who was completely engrossed, her eyes sparkling with delight. Seeing Maura so happy made Jane's own reluctance fade away. The film was funny and poignant, with moments that touched on deep themes in a lighthearted way.
A little while longer Maura felt Jane moving a bit. She began to feel a bit of guilt because she knew Jane would definitely enjoyed Oppenheimer more.
As the movie finished, they made their way out of the theater and dropped their trash fro their snacks at the door. Jane took Maura's hand and they walked out of the theater into the parking lot.
Jane looked up to see all of stars out in the night sky and then walked in silence to the car.
Once in the car Maura started "Ok, you can say it, you hated the movie. I could feel your squirming throughout the movie but I do appreciate you staying with me. I really did enjoy the movie and for once the reviews I read were correct. Ryan Gosling was perfect for the role of Ken. That was wonderful! I loved how they addressed both the fun and the deeper aspects of Barbie's legacy." Maura took a breath knowing she was beginning to rambling.
Jane looked over at Maura in the passenger seat and smiled, "It was ok"
"Ok" Maura said softly
"Yeah, well I definitely got lost in some parts of the movie and I stand by the fact there is need under any circumstance for thatch pink but it wasn't all bad." Jane smirked as she put the car into drive heading home.
"What was your favorite part?" Maura questioned
"Well duh, the Ken song," Jane laughed "It's jus so catchy."
Maura chuckled and then replied "I love you, Jane"
"I love you too Maura." Jane replied.
Maura's thoughts went back to the test, she had managed to get Jane to go to the movie of her choice but didn't succeed at the bonus points. She silently shook her head thinking that it was pretty fun to do these tests in the spirit of fun. She also couldn't wait to tell Jane about them when she completed them.
Chapter 4: Does your partner respond quickly to your text messages?
Summary:
Does your partner reply to you text messages within a short amount of time?
Try texting your partner throughout the day and time the responses. If your partner replies within 8 minutes each time put a point in the whipped category.
For a bonus point try this over three days straight.
Chapter Text
Jane adjusted her holster and grabbed her keys from the kitchen counter. "Gotta go, babe," she called out to Maura, who was sipping her morning tea at the dining table.
"Have a good day, Detective," Maura replied with a warm smile. "Don't forget your lunch."
Jane grinned, giving Maura a quick kiss on the lips. "You spoil me, Dr. Rizzoli-Isles."
Maura laughed. "And you love it."
Jane winked and headed out the door, her heart feeling full.
Jane had a busy day ahead of her they had finally tracked down a person of interest in their case and were now working on gathering enough evidence for a warrant. Frankie had texted her Saturday night that all of the lab results were expected in on Monday morning, so she knew her day would be packed.
Maura's morning had been a little more laid back. She had taken her time with some morning yoga before she saw Jane off to work and planned to drop by and see Hope at MEND to discuss her taking a bit more of an administrative role in running the clinic.
Maura was waiting in the conference room for Hope, who was running a few minutes behind with her last patient. Maura sat down and pulled her phone out, after scrolling the headlines and not seeing anything that caught her eye, she decided to check in with Jane.
9:15 AM
Jane was deep in paperwork when her phone buzzed.
Maura: Morning, love. Just finished waiting for Hope to start our meeting. Can't wait to tell you about it tonight. xx
Jane smirked, imagining Maura's excited expression as she discussed her new role working along side her birth mother. She quickly typed a response.
Jane: Can't wait to hear all about it. Be safe down there. Love you. 😘
With Jane's almost instantaneous reply, Maura thought back to the article and the test about the text response time. She thought for a few more moments and then typed out another text.
Maura: Have you gotten any of the results back from the lab? Susie knows to bring them straight to the bullpen
The three dots almost immediately popped up under her message bringing a smile to Maura's face.
Jane: Not yet but she did come check in earlier
Jane put her head back down to read the same report for the third time when her phone almost instantly buzzed again
Maura: I was just reading an article about starting an at home herb garden. What do you think?
Jane rolled her eyes and then typed out her reply
Jane: Sure that sounds good
Maura smiled at the message. While they definitely communicated throughout the day, it was mostly on big topics or plans. Maura knew Jane was hard at work but with nothing but time she decided to see if she could keep Jane talking.
Maura: How do you feel about mint?
Jane phone buzzed again on the desk, with a sigh she picks it up. Korsak had heard her phone buzzing for the last few minutes looked up from the report he was reading.
"My aren't you popular this morning" He chuckled while looking up at Jane.
"It's Maura, she must be bored." Jane smiled while typing her reply.
Jane: I don't know how I feel about mint
Maura watched as the reply came through and smiled at the response. Maura thought Jane was replying rather quickly and thought Jane might pass this test also. As with the last tests a slight feeling go guilt came over her for a second.
Hope then walked in the room apologizing for her tardiness.
11:30 AM
Some of the tests resulted in confirming their person of interest was an actual suspect. Warrant in hand Jane and Korsak were heading out to pick him up for an interview. Jane was on her way to knock on the suspect's door when her phone buzzed again.
Maura: Hope your day is going well. Don't forget to hydrate! You left your water bottle at home. I put an extra one in your bag. xx
Jane chuckled, shaking her head. Only Maura would think to pack an extra water bottle.
Jane: You're the best. Thanks, Doc. xx
Although when in professional situations they both reverted to using their official titles, Maura always loved when Jane referenced hers in personal situations. Maura quickly replied.
Maura: Anymore ideas on herb gardens?
Jane was just putting her phone back in its holder on her belt when it buzzed again. She let out a sigh of frustration and quickly replied.
Jane: Nope kinda busy finding the bad guy
Maura felt her smile slip knowing she didn't want Jane distracted when dealing with a potential dangerous suspect.
Maura: Good luck, see you later
Korsak looked at Jane impatiently before voicing "Is your little chat session over, can we do some work now?"
"Sorry, for some reason Maura is extremely chatty over text today" Jane sighed as they continued up the driveway towards the house. "I know she worries if I don't respond but really an herb garden. Geez!"
Korsak just rolled his eyes and laughs "Happy wife happy life, Rizzoli"
1:00 PM
Lunch break came, and Jane opened the lunchbox Maura had prepared sitting in the passenger seat of the police cruiser. Her phone buzzed just as she took a bite of the sandwich. Korsak and Jane were sitting in the cruiser outside the suspect's girlfriend's house waiting to see if he showed up. So far they were 0-3 in the known locations for him.
Maura: How's the lunch? I tried a new recipe for the sandwich spread. 😊 xx
Jane took another bite, savoring the flavors before replying.
Jane: Delicious, as always. You could make cardboard taste good. 😉
Korsak looked over and eyes Jane's lunch "Man neither of my 3 wives have ever made me a lunch that looks that good"
Jane swatted his hand away and replied "Paws off old man. On the days Maura know I will be in the field a lot she has started to make me lunches. She already complains enough about the amount of takeout I eat."
Maura: Susie suggested we grow some lemon grass
Jane rolled her eyes and then muttered under her breath "This damn herb garden"
Korsak laughed "If it makes her happy what's the harm."
"The harm, on my Saturday off I'm gonna be building a garden when I could be watching Sportscaster" Jane said as she finished the last bite of sandwich.
Jane: We can plant whatever you want. I vote this recipe again for lunch tho
Maura smiled and then immediately replied, followed with a conversation taking place in swift succession.
Maura: All though
Jane: it's a txt message, short hand
Maura: it doesn't take that much longer to type a grammatically correct message
Jane: Y tho
Maura: Really? Jane Clementine Rizzoli-Isles
Korsak looked up and said "Bingo, that is our guy" Jane looked up then quickly typed laughing as she hit send
Jane: c u later g2g
Maura: Be careful. Love you xx
Maura shook her head because for some reason it took her twice as long to read the non grammatically correct messages and Jane always seemed to have a new shorthand for a word keeping her confused.
3:45 PM
Jane was in the middle of interrogating a suspect when her phone buzzed again. She stole a glance at the message while Korsak continued the questioning.
Maura: Miss you. Can't wait for you to come home. I'm thinking of making your favorite pasta for dinner. xx
Jane felt a warm rush of love. She quickly typed a reply when she stepped out of the room.
Jane: Can't wait. I miss you too. Be home soon.
Maura: I found some fresh basil at the market. This could definitely be something to grow
Jane looked up to see Korsak closing the door.
Jane: k
Maura: Can you pick up some bread from the bakery, there was nothing good at the market.
Jane: k
Maura: Are you gonna say something other than "k"?
Jane: k
Maura: Be careful or you will end up sleeping on the couch
Jane laughed and then sent her response, knowing she was about to poke the dragon a little but also wanting to poke the dragon a little.
Jane: k
Jane: b home in 1hr 😘
Jane and Korsak finished up a little more paperwork. The suspect had agreed to talk and so the interview was slated for tomorrow when the district attorney could be pleasant to sign off on a plea deal.
"See you tomorrow Korsak, I am off to talk about this her garden for the next 12 hours with my wife" Smiling as she grabbed her coat.
"Happy wife, happy life" Korsak called after her as she left.
6:30 PM
Jane finally pulled into their driveway, feeling the weight of the day lift as she saw the lights on in their cozy home. She walked through the door to the smell of garlic and herbs.
"I'm home!" Jane called out.
"In the kitchen!" Maura's voice sang back.
Jane followed the delicious aroma to find Maura stirring a pot on the stove. She slipped her arms around Maura's waist from behind, resting her chin on Maura's shoulder. "Hey, beautiful."
Maura turned her head, giving Jane a soft kiss. "Hey, yourself. How was your day?"
Jane sighed contentedly. "Better now that I'm home with you. So an herb garden really?"
Maura blushed sightly "It was just something on my mind today"
"Yea I gathered that but the hundreds of text messages about a herb garden." Jane laughed tightening her arms around her waist again.
"What, it was not hundreds. And you were of little help." Maura frowned
"I was just busy you know breaking down doors, chasing bad guys and saving the day" Jane said as she assumed a superwoman pose.
"Well, I love that you are good at putting away bad guys and that you always respond even when I ask about herb gardens"
They shared a lingering kiss, savoring the moment of reunion after a long day.

The next morning came and saw Jane and Maura getting ready to both head out to work.
Jane was running a bit late, rushing around the bedroom to find her badge. "Where did I leave it last night?" she muttered to herself.
Maura appeared in the doorway, holding Jane's badge with a knowing smile. "Looking for this?"
Jane sighed in relief, taking the badge and giving Maura a quick kiss. "What would I do without you?"
"Be late more often," Maura teased. "Now go, or you'll miss your morning briefing."
8:00 AM
Jane was sitting through a team briefing when her phone buzzed on her hip. She subtly glanced at it under the table.
Maura: Good morning, love. I hope your briefing is going well. Don't forget, we have dinner plans with Angela tonight. xx
Jane smiled, her mother's impromptu dinner invites always made the week feel more lively.
Jane: Morning, Doc. Just getting through the usual. Can't wait for dinner. xx
Maura smiled, she knew she had increased the amount of text message sent the day before but if she was honest Jane was always good at acknowledging her when she texted or called. She was tryin to think up a topic to keep the text messages responses today.
Maura: There is a new dog park opening next weekend. Do you think we should take Beacon?
Beacon, their female chocolate lab loved going for walks and had become a regular at the local park a few blocks from their house.
Jane: but her best friend is at the Cate St. park
Maura: Beacon doesn't have a best friend. She has other dogs she is familiar with and plays with while there.
Jane: Best friend duh
Maura: Who is her best friend then?
Jane: Carson, the border collie 🐶. They share toys and always play together
Korsak cleared his throat and nudged Jane when he noticed the Captain giving the briefing was looking at Jane.
"What" she whispered looking back at him.
He raised his eyes and tilted his head to point towards the front of the room.
Jane: u r getting me in trouble. We can try the new park. G2G luv u 😘
Maura smiled as she read the last message even with all of the errors she could hear the tone of voice Jane would use when reading the text message in her head.
10:15 AM
Jane was reviewing case files at her desk when another text came through.
Maura: I was thinking about our trip to the Cape next month. Any ideas on what you'd like to do? xx
Jane's mind wandered to the peaceful beaches and quaint towns. She could almost feel the ocean breeze.
Jane: A whole week with you and no work? I'm in heaven already. Let's rent bikes and explore.
Maura: A new winery is opening. We should make plans to go to a tasting.
Jane: k
Maura: Again
Jane: What I am supposed to be reviewing this case file but now I am starting to day dream about this trip
Maura: Do you want to know what I am doing right now?
Jane swallowed hard as she read the last message.
Jane: ummmm 👀
Jane: Yes
Maura: Cataloging evidence from a cold case to help another agency.
Jane rolled her eyes and huffed.
Jane: Really
Maura: What did you think I was doing?
Maura smirked as she typed the reply.
Jane: Not that
Maura: I would never sext you at work Jane.
Jane: Geez
"Rizzoli" Jane heard her name and popped up her head to see the chief looking at her.
"Sir" she replied standing.
"Join us in the conference room, please," then the captain turned to head over to the conference room.
Maura: That would not be professional
Jane: k g2g capt calling luv u 😘
Maura smiled knowing she had Jane panicking a little. She put her phone down to continue working.
12:30 PM
Jane was having a quick bite at her desk when she felt her phone vibrate again. They had grabbed a quick burger on their way back from talking to a witness.
Maura: Just finished another autopsy. Found something unusual. Reminds me of that case we worked on last spring. xx
Jane's curiosity was piqued. She quickly typed back.
Jane: Can't wait to hear the details. You always find the coolest stuff. 😉
Maura: Did your meeting with the Captain go well?
Jane took another bite before typing.
Jane: gr8, not in trouble, just an administrative thing 😬
Maura: well now that you are a Lieutenant, there are new parts to the job.
Jane smiled, although she it was a bit to adjust to the new position she as loving all the new aspects.
Jane: not as much field time and more administrative
Maura: I thought you were enjoying it
Jane: I am, g2g luv u 😘
2:00 PM
In the middle of chasing a lead, Jane's phone buzzed with a message.
Maura: Thinking of you. Be careful out there. xx
Jane's heart swelled. Even in the chaos, Maura's messages grounded her.
Jane: Always careful. Can't wait to see you.
Maura: Try to come home with no new injuries
Maura: It won't get you out of dinner tonight either
Jane: Careful is my middle name
Maura: It is not.
Jane: G2G, luv u 😘
5:45 PM
Jane was wrapping up paperwork when her phone buzzed once more. Jane checked the time knowing she needed to head out soon
Maura: Heading home. Do you need anything from the store? xx
Jane did a mental inventory of their fridge.
Jane: We're out of milk. See you soon
Maura: Got it. I saw you were running low on beer and will grab some more
Jane: Thks
Maura: Should I grab some new treats for Beacon
Jane: She didn't like the chicken flavored ones
Maura: Right, I'll see if they have a different flavor.
Jane: Korsak said dogs can have best friends and he is like an expert 🐶
Maura: Well, I guess I will have to do some more research on the topic. See you at home, love you.
Maura smiled as she read the text exchange. She had surmised after two days about texting about random topics, Jane had continued to respond quickly to each message. She was going to consider this a point in the whipped category although she had to admit this wasn't much of a test.
7:00 PM
Jane arrived at home, greeted by the smell of home-cooked Italian food. Maura was already there, helping Angela in the kitchen.
"Hey, babe," Jane said, giving Maura a quick kiss. "Hi, Ma."
"Hi, sweetie!" Angela called from the stove. "Dinner's almost ready. Maura's been a big help."
After dinner and Angela returning to the guest house, Maura and Jane got comfortable on the sofa.
Maura smiled, handing Jane beer. "How was your day?"
"Better now," Jane replied, taking a sip and feeling the day's stress melt away.
They settled at the table, the comforting buzz of family chatter filling the room. Jane and Maura exchanged glances, little smiles that spoke volumes.
"Thank you for the texts today," Jane said, kissing Maura's temple. "They always make my day better."
Maura nestled closer. "I just like reminding you how much I love you."
Jane sighed contentedly, holding Maura a little tighter. "I love you too, Maura. Always."

Chapter Text
Jane Rizzoli sighed, her eyes fixed on the TV screen where the Red Sox were warming up for their game. She was settled comfortably on her couch, her favorite beer in hand, ready for a relaxing evening.
Just as the game was about to start, her phone buzzed with a text message. It was from Maura.
Maura: Hey Jane, how about we go shopping today?
Jane frowned. Shopping was the last thing she wanted to do, especially when there was a game on. She quickly typed back.
Jane: No thanks, Maura. The Red Sox are playing tonight.
Her phone buzzed almost immediately.
Maura: Come on, Jane. You need a break. Plus, I found this great new boutique I think you'll love.
Jane sighed again, knowing that once Maura had her mind set on something, it was nearly impossible to change it. She decided to call her instead.
"Maura, I appreciate the offer, but it's game night. Can't we do this another time?" Jane pleaded as soon as Maura picked up.
"Jane, you spend almost every evening watching baseball. A little shopping won't hurt, and it will be fun. I promise," Maura said, her voice gentle but insistent.
Jane rubbed her temples, contemplating her options. She knew Maura meant well and was genuinely trying to get her out of her comfort zone. With a resigned sigh, she gave in.
"Alright, Maura. You win. I'll go shopping with you," Jane said, hoping she wouldn't regret it. “But no complaints when I order a pizza and watch the recorded game later this evening.
Maura stared for a moment then reluctantly said “That’s fine but order a salad too.”
Jane stopped for a second as she was looking for her shoes and thought to herself, how could she fold at every thing, well almost everything Maura asks. Just as she was trying to remember why Maura turned around and looked at her with those green eyes and Jane found it. She couldn’t tell Maura no, just look at the woman. Jane found her other shoe and followed Maura to the car. The woman she loved wanted to go shopping and who was Jane to deny her.
Jane tugged at the hem of her shirt as she walked into the boutique with Maura. The store was filled with chic clothing and accessories, a stark contrast to her usual wardrobe. She felt out of place, but Maura's enthusiasm was contagious.
While in the car, Maura remembered the article and the purse test. Jane never carried a purse her wallet went in her back pocket, keys in a front pocket, and her phone usually in another pocket or on her hip. This would be a great time Maura thought to follow the article.
"Look at this dress, Jane! It would look stunning on you," Maura exclaimed, holding up a sleek, black dress.
Jane raised an eyebrow. "Really? It looks... not my style…and expensive”
Maura laughed. "Sometimes it's okay to splurge on yourself. Besides, you deserve it."
Jane walked to another wrack and stopped at a mannequin with a halter style red top. For a moment she let her mind wander to what Maura would look like in that top.
Maura rounded the corner and caught Jane staring at the mannequin. She chuckled and approached.
“I would have never guessed this was your style.” Maura said right over Jane’s shoulder.
Jane jumped being pulled from her thoughts. “Umm, well, I wasn’t thinking about me” she managed to get out.
“Oh, I see,” Maura winked. “Here hang on to my purse, and I’ll try this on.”
Jane caught Maura’s purse as it nearly hit her in the chest still trying to recover from being pulled out of the daydream.
What could possibly make Maura’s purse so heavy all of the time, Jane thought as the weight of the Gucci handbag settled in her arms. She was used to carrying a gun on hip for protection but all Maura Ould have to do is hit the suspect once in the head with this thing and they would definitely be down for the count.
Maura grabbed her size quickly in the shirt and then continued throughout the boutique.
Jane just continued to follow Maura toting her purse along. Jane had resigned that this was definitely more of Maura’s style boutique after walking past the first few displays.
After a few more selections Maura headed to the changing room. Jane found the designated partner seat outside and made herself comfortable.
While seated Jane couldn’t help but think the one good thing about the high end boutiques Maura enjoyed shopping at had very comfortable chairs and for that she was grateful.
Holding Maura’s purse in her lap she retrieved her phone from her back pocket quickly responding to a text message from Frankie.
“Jane, are you ready?” Maura questioned.
“Yep,” Jane said still typing on her phone. “Ah-hem” Maura cleared her throat.
Jane's eyes lit up. "You look amazing, Maura!"
Maura was wearing the shirt Jane had stopped to imagine what Maura might look in. The real image in front of her was so much better than what was in her head.
Maura then continued on trying the other selection of outfits. After a few more moments Maura emerged from the dressing room with her selections and went to head to the checkout. She almost instinctively reached for her purse but held back at the last minute.
Jane went to extend Maura’s purse back to her but Maura continued on to the checkout. Jane shrugged and then continued toting the bag if cinderblocks Maura carried around following her.
At the checkout Maura just quickly leaned over and pulled her wallet from the purse and then slid it back all without moving to take the purse from Jane. Jane smiled when Maura looked at her and leaned in for a quick kiss.
After checking out Maura grabbed the bags from the boutique and headed back to the car. Jane again went to extend the purse but Maura didn’t look back for it. Jane shrugged again and followed, opening the trunk with her keys just as Maura approached.
Just as Jane was sliding into the driver’s seat thinking she was heading home, Maura spoke up “Jane can we try that new boutique that opened over by the theater? Susie has said she found some excellent pieces there last week.”
Jane sighed slightly and then agreed. She had agreed to go shopping and she very well understood that could be an entire day’s affair with Maura.
As they were exiting the car, Maura grabbed her purse from the floor boards and followed Jane to the door. Instinctively Jane opened the door allowing Maura to walk in first.
As Maura browsed through the racks of designer clothes, Jane found herself bored and fidgeting. The real trouble began when Maura handed her back the Gucci bag.
"Hold this for a moment, will you?" Maura asked, already turning away to pick up a dress.
Jane looked at the purse as if it were a ticking time bomb. "Uh, sure.” This was the second time Jane had been handed Maura’s purse.
She took the purse, holding it awkwardly by the very tips of her fingers, as if it might bite. She glanced around, feeling the eyes of the boutique's clientele on her. They weren't, of course, but Jane had never been one for the spotlight, especially not in a store like this.
As Maura flitted from rack to rack, holding up dresses and asking Jane's opinion, Jane found herself shifting the purse to a more comfortable position. First, she slung it over her shoulder, then tried holding it by the strap. No matter what she did, it felt out of place.
"Jane, what do you think of this one?" Maura held up a stunning red dress.
"It's...nice," Jane replied, not really sure what else to say.
Maura tilted her head, scrutinizing the dress. "Nice isn't quite the word I was hoping for. Does it seem too bold?"
Jane sighed. "No, it's perfect. Really, Maura, you look great in anything."
Maura beamed, clearly pleased with the compliment, she grabbed the dress and headed toward the dressing room.
A few minutes later, Maura emerged, looking stunning in a sleek, red dress. She twirled in front of Jane, waiting for her opinion.
"Well? What do you think?" Maura asked, her eyes full of expectation.
Jane swallowed, feeling a little flustered. "You look great, Maura. But you always do."
Maura beamed, clearly pleased with the compliment. "Thank you, Jane. You're so sweet.”
Again Jane found herself still holding the purse, she tried to discreetly peak inside to see if Maura had grabbed a dumbbell to carry or something. She couldn’t begin to think what would weigh so much in Maura’s purse.
Maura headed toward the counter to check out and Jane followed with the purse. Again Jane followed with her purse. As the cashier was handing the bags, Maura had taken a second to look at a new scent of perfume next to the counter. Jane realized the cashier was awkwardly holding the bags out and so grabbed those as well.
Jane turned with Maura’s purse still in hand and now her shopping bags as well and repeated the action of opening the trunk and sliding the bags in.
“One more stop,” Maura smiled as she gave Jane directions to the next boutique.
Jane had a slight look of astonishment when they pulled up to a sporting goods store. “Really” she stated with a large grin on her face.
“Well today couldn’t be all about me,” Maura said as she hopped out the car before Jane could.
“Could you grab my purse” Maura called back watching out of the corner of her eye Jane lean back in to grab Maura’s bag.
Jane was grumbling in her head about the weight of the bag but quickly calmed her mind when she saw the door she was heading into.
Maura stopped and thought Jane hadn’t complained all day about getting stuck with Maura’s purse. She did not some awkward moments Jane had with holding the purse but so far she had been a good sport.
Jane immediately granted to the Red Sox section looking at some new gear. There was a backpack she had seen a few times at the stadium other people had carried and it had one zipped insulated like a cooler and the front pocket held snacks. Jane has said when she found one she was going to get it because it would be perfect for park picnics or even some tail gaiting before games.
As she slid one off the rack she thought perfect, I’ll put this heavy bag inside and make it so much easier to carry around.
Maura had moved over into the kids section looking for a gift for TJ.
They both continued to move around the store, Jane taking much more interest in these racks than the ones at the boutique.
After a good bit of searching Maura went to Jane with her gift ideas to have Jane pick the best. She found Jane looking at the Jerseys.
“Which do you think TJ will enjoy more?” Maura said as she lifted up a Red Sox emblazoned baseball or a Celtics basketball.
Jane pondered and then said “Let’s go with the basketball.”
“What do you think, Maur?” Jane held out a jersey for Maura to look at.
“I thought you already had a jersey, Jane?” Maura questioned.
“Not for me silly, you need a jersey to watch the games in proper attire.” Jane laughed
“Oh” Maura reached to to touch the fabric, “I like it. I will match you” she smiled.
After a few moments she looked at Jane and realized her purse was missing.
“Jane, where is my purse?” Maura questioned, she was sure she saw Jane grab it from the car.
Jane pointed to the backpack.
“Look Maur, I don’t mind holding your purse but it felt like you have straight up rocks in there. What do you carry? It must weigh 40 pounds. I found that backpack ice chest we saw at the stadium at the last game we went to and its also perfect to alleviate my forearms from carrying all this weight all day”
Maura chuckled “I only carry the essentials.”
“I think you may need less essentials.” Jane smiled back
“You have been really great helping me carry it today” Maura added.
“I thought this has been the most time I’ve carried it. You usually don’t let me touch your expensive bags too long or they have mysterious stains appear” Jane said back jokingly
Maura smiled “No, but you have been a good sport about it”
“Will I get rewarded later” Jane lifted one eyebrow as the words left her mouth.
Maura lowered her eyes at Jane “We will see, for now its check out and head back to watch the game in our matching jerseys.”
Chapter 6: Celebrating A Half-Birthday
Summary:
Will your partner celebrate an absurd holiday with you?
Convince your partner to celebrate a half birthday, 8 month anniversary, or Flag Day. If you succeed put a point in the whipped category.
Bonus points if you get them to invite their friends over to celebrate
Chapter Text
Jane sat at her desk in the Boston Homicide Division, flipping through paperwork and grumbling about the latest case. Her partner, Maura, breezed into the room, a bright smile on her face.
"Good morning, Jane," Maura greeted cheerfully.
Jane looked up, her brow furrowing at Maura's unusually sunny disposition. "Morning, Maura. What's got you in such a good mood?"
Maura's smile widened. "Do you know what today is?"
Jane glanced at her calendar and shook her head. "Nope, should I?"
"It's your half birthday!" Maura announced, clapping her hands together.
Jane stared at her, bewildered. "My what?"
"Your half birthday," Maura repeated. "It's exactly six months since your last birthday. I thought it would be fun to celebrate."
Jane chuckled. "Maura, no one celebrates half birthdays. That's for kids."
"Well, I think it's a wonderful opportunity to take a moment to appreciate how far you've come in the last six months," Maura said, undeterred. "And besides, it's an excuse to do something nice for you."
Jane sighed but couldn't help but smile at Maura's enthusiasm. "Alright, Maura. What do you have in mind?"
"Well I think we should celebrate this weekend." Maura smiled. "I can cook dinner and if you want to invite Frost, Korsak and your brothers we can have a little dinner party watching the Red Sox game."
"Hmmm" Jane thought "That doesn't sound half bad"
"See half birthdays aren't just for kids, Jane." Maura leaned in kiss Jane on her temple. "Invite who ever you want"
— — —
Jane had taken Joe Friday for a walk in the park, when Maura had kicked her out of the house to start getting ready for the celebration earlier that afternoon. As she walked back toward the house she couldn't help but feel butterflies for this ridiculous holiday Maura had planned.
Maura just smiled mysteriously and led Jane inside. To Jane's surprise, the living room was filled with her closest friends and family: Korsak, Frost, Frankie, Tommy, and her mother, Angela. The room was decorated with streamers and balloons in the colors of the Boston Red Sox.
"Surprise!" everyone shouted.
"It's not a surprise, I knew you all would be here." Jane rolled her eyes "I invited you all, and I'm not sure what kind of celebration this is but I'm here for the Red Sox."
"It's a half-birthday celebration, of course!" Angela said, coming over to give Jane a hug. "We couldn't let Maura have all the fun."
Jane looked around, feeling a mix of embarrassment and gratitude. "You guys are crazy. No one celebrates half birthdays."
"Well, we do now," Korsak said, clapping her on the back. "And we're here to make sure you enjoy it."
Maura announced that dinner was about to start and gathered everyone to the table.
"Wow, Maura, you really went all out," Jane said, impressed.
Maura smiled, pleased with Jane's reaction. "I wanted to make this day special for you. Sit down, and I'll bring out the first course."
Jane took a seat, and Maura disappeared into the kitchen, returning with a plate of beautifully arranged appetizers. "For starters, we have bruschetta with fresh tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella."
Frankie leaned over to Tommy, "Do we get half birthdays too?" Tommy just chuckled back.
Korsak dug in to the started, not before thanking Maura again for all of her hard work.
Jane took a bite, savoring the fresh flavors. "This is amazing, Maura. You didn't have to do all this."
"I wanted to," Maura said, sitting down opposite Jane. "You do so much for everyone else. It's nice to be able to do something for you. And Angela really did help a lot of the cooking today"
Angela smiled "I am always happy to celebrate my children."
They enjoyed the appetizers, chatting and laughing about work, life, and everything in between. Maura then brought out the main course: a perfectly cooked filet mignon with a side of garlic mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables.
Jane's eyes widened. "Maura, this looks incredible."
Maura smiled. "I'm glad you like it. I know how much you love a good steak."
Frankie looked over at Jane, "I mean I don't know how you got Maura to celebrate your half birthday, but do you think she will celebrate mine."
Jane shook her head as she responded to him, "Shut up and eat, you should be happy we invited you."
They dug into the meal, the rich flavors and tender meat a perfect complement to the relaxed atmosphere. Jane couldn't help but feel grateful for Maura's thoughtfulness.
As they finished the main course, Maura stood up again. "And now, for dessert."
Jane groaned playfully. "There's more? Maura, I'm stuffed."
Korsak laughed as he said "I can always find a spot for dessert"
Maura laughed. "Just a little something sweet to finish off the evening."
She returned with a small but exquisite chocolate lava cake, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Jane's eyes lit up. "Okay, you got me. I can't resist chocolate."
They shared the dessert, the warm, gooey chocolate center a delightful end to the meal. As they finished, Jane leaned back in her chair, a contented smile on her face. "Almost time for the game to start" Jane said as she rubbed her now full belly.
"Thank you, Maura. This was perfect," Jane said sincerely giving her a short but loving kiss.
Everyone moved towards the living room as Frankie began clearing the plates. Maura went over to help but Frankie stopped her. "I can definitely clean the kitchen, Maura. You cooked this amazing meal, the least I can do is clean"
"Thanks Frankie" Maura smiled as she grabbed one of Jane's favorite beers to bring over to her on the couch.
"Wow, Maura, the food was incredible," Tommy said as he found a seat in the living room.
Angela sat next to Jane, nudging her. "You know, it's not so bad celebrating a half birthday, right?"
Jane chuckled, taking a sip of her beer. "I guess not. I mean, if it means spending time with all of you, I can't really complain."
As the game went on, the room was filled with laughter, friendly banter, and the occasional groan at a missed play. Jane found herself relaxing more and more, genuinely enjoying the company of her friends and family.
As the game came to an exciting finish with the Red Sox winning, Jane leaned back in her chair, feeling content.
"Thanks, everyone," she said, raising her glass. "For making my half birthday something special."
"To Jane!" everyone echoed, raising their glasses in a toast.
Jane smiled, realizing that maybe celebrating a half birthday wasn't so weird after all
As Maura finished up picking up everything in the living room, she smiled to herself. It really wasn't as hard as she would have thought to get Jane to celebrate an absurd holiday. She wasn't sure why Jane went along so well but it had worked out perfectly. Maura thought back to the article. All the tests weren't complete but she definitely knew the test would show Jane was whipped.
Chapter 7: Whipped?
Chapter Text
Jane was sprawled on the couch, half-watching a rerun of an old detective show, while Maura sat nearby, flipping through a glossy magazine.
Jane glanced over at Maura, who seemed unusually absorbed in the magazine. "What's so interesting over there?"
Maura looked up, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Oh, just some fun little quizzes. You know, the kind they have in lifestyle magazines."
Jane raised an eyebrow. "Quizzes? Like what? 'What kind of pizza are you?' or something?"
Maura chuckled. "Something like that. Actually, it's a series of tests to determine how 'whipped' someone is in a relationship."
Jane sat up, suddenly interested. "Whipped, huh? And why are you reading that?"
Maura's cheeks turned a faint pink. "Well, I thought it might be amusing to see how you score. I normally wouldn't try it but Caitlin and I were talking one day and thought it might be a little fun."
Jane narrowed her eyes playfully. "You've been testing me?"
Maura nodded, looking a little sheepish. "Yes, but only for fun. You know how I enjoy analyzing things."
Jane laughed. "Alright, I'll bite. How did I do?"
Maura flipped back a few pages in the magazine. "Let's see. There were various scenarios and questions. For example, would you let me pick your outfit, and would you hold my purse?"
Jane grinned. "Sure, why not? You know you have way better style than I do, I always default to you. And even though I complain I will always hold your purse babe."
Maura smiled and continued. "And would you celebrate an absurd holiday?"
Jane rolled her eyes but nodded. "Yeah, yeah. Well to be honest that was a great meal"
Maura looked pleased. "And how quickly you respond to my messages and calls?"
Jane sighed dramatically. "I always respond to you, you know that. I really am tied up if I don't respond."
Maura laughed, closing the magazine. "Well, according to this, you're quite 'whipped.'"
Jane shook her head, smiling. "Whipped, huh? I prefer to think of it as being in love with you."
Maura's expression softened. "I love you to, Jane. The most."
Jane reached over and took Maura's hand. "And you're worth it. Besides, I secretly enjoy most of the things you drag me into."
Maura squeezed her hand. "I know. That's why I love doing them with you."
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the flickering TV screen casting a soft glow in the room. Jane leaned back, a content smile on her face.
"You know, Maura, if being whipped means spending time with you, I don't mind it at all," Jane said softly.
Maura's eyes sparkled with warmth. "I'm glad to hear that, Jane. Because I enjoy every moment we spend together."
Jane smirked. "Even if it means taking ridiculous magazine quizzes?"
Maura laughed. "Especially if it means taking ridiculous magazine quizzes."
And with that, they settled back into their comfortable routine, the bond between them stronger than ever. Because in the end, it wasn't about the quizzes or the labels—it was about the friendship and love they shared.
