Work Text:
Days before the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, Cap and Bucky walked the Normandy cemetery. The men had both wanted to be there on the day, but they knew they would be a distraction so Clint had volunteered to fly them in the Quinjet to France. Phil flew with them since he knew he wouldn't be recognized and Clint was a pro at blending in.
Clint leaned on Phil's shoulder as they watched Cap and Bucky walk through the headstones. "I can't imagine what it must have been like to storm the beaches that day," Clint said. "Most of them were kids."
"After the beaches," Phil said, "they had to face liberating the concentration camps. It's no wonder neither Cap or Bucky talks about that part of the war."
"Mr. Hawkeye, is that Captain America?" a pre-school-aged child asked as he tugged on Clint's jacket. "He saved my grandma's daddy in the war. Will you please thank him for me?"
"Sure," Clint said, reaching toward Phil's hand, "we'll tell him together."
Phil let Clint lead him toward his teammates and wondered if should ever tell Cap that he'd saved his grandfather that day he disobeyed orders and went behind enemy lines.
