Valhalla: The Clash of the Past, the Present, and the Future

Summary:

After Kratos had beaten Týr one too many times in Valhalla, Týr decides that Kratos is ready to face... special odds.

(The vote of fights have been opened! Check Chapter 4 and leave behind your decision of the gauntlet "Loved Ones" in the comment section! Update: The time limit is 22 August!)

Notes:

Lol, I'm such a good fan of God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, and I also happen to be very fascinated with the concept of the "Garden of Remembrance" from Kingdom Hearts II and III, so I decided to come up with a fic that blended both aspects to the best of my ability! Do hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1: The New Challenges

Chapter Text

Once again, Kratos had lifted Týr off the ground and was poised to punch him. Týr caught it, but this time, for the first time since they fought, Kratos managed to overpower his punch-catch, knocking him down to the ground, causing the Norse God of War to cough up some blood, but rather than being shocked or angered, he merely hummed to himself as he casually got back up. Well done, Kratos. That particular burst of strength was much more potent than the ones you used in your attempts to deal a finishing punch on me before. I take it you have finally discovered true emotional and mental balance, then?

Kratos himself had to admit he was somewhat satisfied by his improved performance. Before, Kratos had been unable to stop the Norse God of War from blocking his punch, but now, it would seem discovering emotional and mental peace had allowed him to further sharpen his strength. Yes. It seems that my acceptance of what I could become instead of clinging on to my past flaws and my newfound forgiveness of my past sins had not only allowed me to find peace, but also allowed me to discover new heights of power.

Týr hummed to himself as he nodded. Well, since you have outmatched me over and over again, and the usual gauntlet of Valhalla seemed to have long since lost it's challenging appeal to you, I believe you are ready for one last test, which will take you to another part of Valhalla that revolves around fighting. Unlike the gauntlet you faced before that draws from your memories of the Nine Realms and Greece to manifest foes of both Greece and Norse origin, this particular pocket of Valhalla will have you face... much more challenging foes.

Kratos simply nodded. He had heard enough from the Valkyries to know that there were many other parts of Valhalla that he had not yet touched. Some were parts he should not touch, indeed, but this particular part that Týr spoke of seemed intriguing. Kratos also noticed the subtle change in Týr's demeanor, his eyes looking slightly more reverent of Valhalla yet also... fearful. Do be warned that the enemies you would face there would test you not only in might and skill, but also your wisdom and how far you've come in moving forward from the past. Are you sure you are truly ready?

How will I access it? That was all Kratos had to say to Týr, who smiled at him and hummed as he nodded and manifested a golden, intricate key filled with several norse runes.

An answer I have expected from you, Kratos. This… Is the key of Remembrance. You can return from the front gate and then point the Key at the gates of the Black Shore that the Valkyries have opened. This will change the course of your progress to Valhalla, but you may choose to train yourselves in the original gauntlet of enemies within Valhalla first or anytime should you find the difficulties of the trials above you. Kratos had to admit the term "Key of Remembrance" alone struck ominous chords within him, but he shrugged it off. He had to see this through.

The Key of Remembrance? Sounds a bit… ominous. Does that mean Kratos will have to face things from the deepest parts of his past? Mimir spoke out in concern as Týr nodded solemnly. Oh well, it's up to you, Brother. If you're really sure you are ready for it, then I'll be with you all the way. Mimir affirmed his support as Kratos nodded in gratitude.

I believe I would do my best, like how I started out here, unready to face my past yet now able to stand tall even in the face of it. Kratos said simply as Týr hummed in approval, although Kratos could sense that there was some concern in Týr's eyes, further hinting at how the odds Kratos would face would be on another level compared to all he had faced before in Valhalla.

Good luck. I'll see you there as soon as you arrive. You'll need my guidance to understand the significance of what lies ahead. Kratos nodded at Týr's words as he entered the door, ready to return to the Shore.

As soon as they had reached the Shore, Mimir spoke, in a tone that seemed quite uneasy, making it clear he was hiding his nervousness when around Týr. You know, something's wrong with Týr. Did you read him out, brother? I've never seen him look like that before. His eyes look like they're reverent, instead of just "respect", but he also looked "afraid", and that's the first time I've ever seen him look scared. Whatever lies ahead when you use the Key of Remembrance, it's clearly something that would be on another level.

Kratos simply nodded in grim approval as he walked towards Freya and the Valkyries. Freya, I have talked to Týr once more. He believed me to be ready to face special challenges after all the progress I had made in Valhalla, and gave me the "Key of Remembrance". Kratos held out the intricate, golden-crafted key as Freya's eyes narrowed as she and the other Valkyries seemed stunned for a few moments.

The Key of Remembrance? Týr had it all this time?? Sigrun said, looking genuinely awed. I must say, the Key of Remembrance was something that Odin never found, no matter how hard he searched for it through the Nine Realms. It allows access to what is undoubtedly the most obscure and difficult part of Valhalla, even though what we know of it consist of only legends.

Týr said I only need point the Key at the gate, and then I would be able to enter whatever specialized pocket of Valhalla it was. Kratos said, noticing the Valkyries clear apprehension. Even Gunnr was looking genuinely concerned for him despite her love for battle and repeated confidence in his skills and might. It only became clearer to him just how the odds would be beyond anything else he had experienced before in Valhalla.

The Key of Remembrance is said to be capable of allowing one access to the "Garden of Memorial's Phantasms". Freya said grimly as she looked at Kratos with steel and seriousness above even the look she gave him when she found out he had entered Valhalla without even talking to her first. It is said to be a selective amount of the mightiest foes you had vanquished before in your past, and at certain occasions, encounters within the Garden could even include aspects from the future.

So you're saying that I will be facing phantoms of the mightiest of foes I had conquered? Kratos said with eery calm, although deep down, he could not help but imagine the exact amount of foes he would be facing within the Garden of Memorial's Phantasms. He could already imagine Zeus, Thor, and Odin as among them. However, Freya shook her head, looking genuinely concerned and like someone who did not have full understanding of the situation.

They're not JUST phantoms. There are rumors that the Garden could alter their fighting abilities and powers to make them more formidable than they already were. There's also the chance you could face foes you had not fought, but still saw as an enemy. You have to understand, Kratos, that within the Garden, you'll be facing a wide variety of opponents. Unlike the gauntlets of Valgrind, we have little ways of guiding you through the process, but- Kratos shook his head. He had to admit Freya had portrayed the odds quite clearly enough, but he would not be swayed. This would be the ultimate test of all the work he had put into moving forward from the past, indeed.

Týr would guide me through it. He had clearly experienced this before, and I trust him. Freya still looked unconvinced, but Gunnr interrupted soon enough, tutting at Freya and the other Valkyries.

Come on... Haven't we all experienced and seen the might of General Kratos, the strongest of the Gods, the greatest of warriors? We know just what he is capable of, and it seems being inside Valhalla has only made him even stronger. We should have faith in him. Gunnr said in order to lighten the mood, causing Kratos to nod appreciatively at her. Freya still looked hesitant, but eventually nodded reluctantly.

Here. Freya's hands glowed as she manifested what seemed to be a mystical gauntlet and a bow that resembled Atreus's Talon Bow, only thicker and more suitable for someone like Kratos. I had meant to give these weapons to you eventually. The gauntlet allows you to cast spells and may also be able to allow you to focus the innate powers of your godhood back from when you were in Greece. Kratos's eyes perked up in slight curiousity at that as Freya shook her head. I didn't exactly name it, so you could decide what name you want for it.

As for the bow, it's enchanted to be capable of using all the arrows Atreus used when you were traveling to stop Ragnarök, but also can allow you to use the lightning and light arrows which Atreus once used before Fimbulwinter along with fire and earth arrows. You just have to say "Bruni" for the fire arrows and "Jörð" for the earth arrows. Kratos nodded as he slipped the gauntlet into his right hand, immediately feeling the light weight of it yet also it's mystical power. It also seemed that Draupnir was not affected by having the gauntlet adorned in his arm. He fitted the bow on his back, and nodded in gratitude to Freya.

Good luck, General. I hope that whatever you face there would truly solidify you beginning to overcome the past. Eir encouraged as Kratos nodded in approval. Sigrun, on the other hand, merely placed her hand into her shoulder as a gesture of respect, confidence, and faith. Gunnr looked like she was grinning beneath her mask as she casually waved at him. Freya gave him a small nod, a gesture that she clearly wished him the best of luck.

Well, seems we're about to face a new level of memorial, Brother. At least I hope I won't have to be replaced with Helios again for this particular gauntlet of Valhalla. Mimir mused, although Kratos could tell he was anxious, as the God of War raised the Key of Remembrance before the opened gate. For a few seconds, there was nothing, but then the gate changed from bright yellow to that of dazzling blue as Kratos also noticed the runes at the top change to that of "Bemästra det förflutna, nuet och framtiden för att verkligen nå de yttersta höjderna av självförbättring och upptäcka fullständig inre frid".

Master the past, the present, and the future to truly reach the utmost heights of self-improvement and discover complete inner peace and acceptance... Kratos translated as he nodded to himself, steadying his heart and mind for all the challenges that would soon come.

And so it was that Kratos marched forward, ready to embrace the final steps of his journey through Valhalla, from which he shall overcome the demons of the past, triumph over the future, and affirm the present.

Chapter 2: The Introduction to the Garden of Memorial Phantasm

Notes:

This chapter took a LOT longer than expected to write, since I needed to carefully consider what fights should Kratos face and the like. I do hope that the next chapter would be easier, and thus released sooner, since I specialize more in action scenes.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

As soon as Kratos stepped through the door, he found himself in a garden with nine inverted waterfalls, each of the waterfalls carrying the runic symbols of the Nine Realms and having a unique type of water that represented each Realm's condition, with the waterfall with the rune of Muspelheim seeming to drip with lava, the waterfall with the rune of Niflheim dripping with icy water, the waterfall with the rune of Svartalfheim letting out blackish smoke. The Garden itself seemed to have no actual plants, but there was a certain air of hopeful challenge indeed. The sky was like that of the Bifrost.

I must say, brother, this truly gives off the impression of a place where a warrior could face his demons, alright, and on top of that, those waterfalls represent the Nine Realms. That altar before you, maybe you could try and work it out, see if it activates whatever kind of past foes you had beaten before? Kratos nodded at Mimir's suggestion as he approached the altar. Swiftly enough, runes appeared, which Kratos translated as "The past must be overcome, the present mastered, and the future be readied for".

Suddenly enough, a burst of light occured as Týr stepped in from what seemed to be a portal. Greetings, friends. I must say, I have not been here for quite some time since I cleared the trials of this place. The growth in clarity and fighting prowess I obtained from the Garden of Memorial's Phantasms was undeniable, indeed, although I would have to admit that the process of acquiring all that growth came close to taking my life, and actually DID kill me, more than once. However, you, Kratos, might not need to actually suffer the sting of defeat the way I once did. You are much stronger and more skilled than I was back when I cleared these challenges, after all.

Kratos nodded as Týr smiled softly at him. Just then, a light emerged from Kratos's body and he felt like his power was being changed somehow, the sensation odd yet not painful, until suddenly, he found his hands holding the Blade of Olympus, which felt oddly much more real instead of just the manifestation of the energies of his rage. Ah, so this is what Valhalla's first gift for your valor in challenging it's most difficult gauntlet. The mightiest weapon in all of Greece, which you mastered from the hands of Zeus, now forged anew and made your own blade, instead of just a manifestation of the wrath you commanded when you killed the Olympians.

Are you saying that this blade is no longer just a manifestation of my power, but a real weapon? Kratos asked Týr with some surprise as Týr merely smiled. The feeling of the Blade of Olympus being almost intangible was gone now as he held the sword, as though it truly had became real. He had left the weapon behind long ago, seeing no purpose in keeping it since it's power was drained and he didn't want any keepsakes from his time as a destroyer anyway.

A mixture of both, you could say, Kratos. On one side, the Blade of Olympus is indeed a manifestation of your power, since the real Blade of Olympus was left behind on Greece, but on the other side, Valhalla has given that manifestation of your power true form and shape, which would make it stronger than it ever was when it was just an extension of your wrath. It would serve you well, and- oh my, the sheath has already been presented. Kratos's eyes perked up in curiosity until he noticed the sheath that was now in the side of his armor.

Kratos carefully placed the Blade of Olympus into the sheath, which suited perfectly into it. The sheath itself was made of a mixture of Greece symbols and Norse runes. Well, I'll be damned. You mean that blade you've been using all this time is the legendary Blade of Olympus!? I've heard whispers of how it ended the war between the Gods in your world and their version of the Giants. I guess you must have had some serious levels of untapped raw power, Brother, if you could conjure up a weapon like that.

At Mimir's awed reaction, Týr merely nodded with a small, encouraging smile. Indeed, Mimir. Although Kratos is already mighty as he is, there is still much potential, much power within him that he does not know yet. In addition to overcoming your past, the Garden of Memorial's Phantasms would help you master those powers, transforming you into an entirely new warrior. Kratos shook his head as he pondered on Týr's words. Untapped power? What was it? Did he still have the magics of an Olympian despite having left Greece?

Anyway, let us see what kind of foes you would face in your time here, Kratos. Place your hand at the altar, and Valhalla will immediately draw upon your memories to create the suitable foes for you to overcome here. Kratos grunted as he nodded, approaching the altar and slowly placing his hand at it. Instantly, the altar glowed, but there wasn't any kind of runes appearing. If anything, the light only kept growing until it engulfed all of the altar. Oh my, the altar didn't react so brightly to my hands, despite my intensive travels to other lands. You truly have faced odds beyond any other, Kratos. So much to overcome in a better way.

Kratos said nothing as the light continued to glow ever so brightly until it finally dimmed, revealing several runes carved on each side of the altar. Ah, so this is the set of opponents you must overcome. Let's see... The first rune, at the center, is "Loved Ones". Kratos's eyes narrowed at that as Týr shook his head. Kratos, the enemies you face here, regardless of how much they look like your past or those you care for, are just phantoms, lacking actual emotions. Do not hold back on them, or else they could very well give you a run for your money.

Kratos grunted but said nothing as he pondered on who was it that he cared for that he would have to face the phantoms of. Would it be Faye, Deimos, Brok, or all of them? Now, the second rune, at the left side, means "The Memoriam of Distant Past". It must mean you will have to face the Olympians once more in battle. This should be easier than your previous battles with them, since you have grown stronger, more capable in battle, and wiser, I believe. Kratos exhaled as he wondered about it. He did not want to relive his battles with the Olympians, for the outcome left him hollow, but if they were his demons, then he would have to overcome them.

(To be the God Faye, Atreus, Freya, Mimir believed I could be. If it means I have to face the past or even manifestations of all those I have loved, then so be it.)

The third rune at the right symbolizes "Echoes of the Closest Past". It must mean you will have to fight the Aesir and Vanir Gods you had encountered before, be it those you battled or those you had met but never actually fought. Kratos's eyes perked up in curiousity at that as Týr smiled at him. Valhalla can construct phantoms beyond simply what you experienced Kratos. You might find some of them quite surprising, indeed. Now, the fourth rune, at the back of the altar.

As soon as Týr's eyes took in the fourth rune, whatever it was, his face seemed to turn grim. Ah, I must say this truly goes beyond my experiences in the Garden of Memorial's Phantasms. To think it would be "Of Creators and Destroyers"... I must say, Valhalla truly holds you at the highest of regards, Kratos. The rune is red, signifying how difficult it truly is. Kratos eyed Týr questioningly, but the God of War of the Nine Realms said nothing.

Now, let us begin by you touching the first rune, Kratos. Let us see what you have to face from "Loved Ones". Kratos grunted, his hands hesitating for a few moments before he steeled himself and placed his hand softly upon the first rune. The effect was quite immediate, as the grounds of the Garden shook for a while, 7 platforms rising up and manifesting staircases into it, each platform containing what seemed to be portals with several markings within it.

Kratos recognized that 4 of the portals were red-colored and four of them were yellow-colored. First of all, what you should now, Kratos, is that red means you are not allowed to fight those enemies until you've defeated the rest of the enemies at this section, as they are on another level entirely. As for the yellow-color, it indicates an opponent of remarkable strength, even if not quite at the level of those with the level of red, although, at certain occasions, they might also be unique in their own right. I must say... To think it would be a divide between "Intense" and "Intermidiate"... It seems both that you had high hopes and respect for those you care for and that Valhalla seeks to truly test you.

Kratos took Týr's words into mental note as he identified the eight portals. The red ones were surprisingly easy for him to identify, although it honestly left him conflicted. Only one of them was not a member of his family, and even if they were but phantasms, it still made his heart ache at the thought of facing them in battle, to be honest.

The first red portal had the insignia of the Leviathan Axe and a bow similar, yet different and superior, compared to Atreus's Talon Bow, and it could be none other but Faye. He still remembered how Faye had used both weapons masterfully to fight him to a stalemate during their first encounter in his chaotic sense of world-weariness and self-loathing, the magics she used against him, which should have been tall-tales that she was far from human. He had never suspected the reason behind her extraordinary might until he learned she was among the greatest, if not the greatest, warrior of the Jötnar.

The second red portal was that of the Arms of Sparta and the gauntlet Deimos had used against him, making it clear he would have to face his brother in battle, the markings of Deimos etched upon every edge of the portal. It still haunted him to this day, wondering if, despite having fought alongside Deimos to kill Thanatos, Deimos's spirit had forgiven him for being unable to stop him from being abducted and then tortured by Thanatos for so long.

The third red portal was even more conflicting for him to face. It carried the insignia of the bear and wolf forms of Atreus, along with the Talon Bow and the dagger Kratos gave him, making it clear that he would have to overcome a phantasm of his son. The fact that it was red indicated that this could very well be a different Atreus, one who was at the height of his full potential. Kratos couldn't help but feel both anticipation at what his son would be capable of at the height of his abilities and turmoil at the idea of facing even an image of his son.

The fourth red portal was by no means easy for him to face either. It was obviously Freya, from the insignia of the Valkyrie Wings, Freya's bow, Thrungva, and Mardoll, along with several Vanir runes to indicate he would be facing the true might of the Queen of the Valkyries and the Leader of the Vanir. Before, Kratos had held his own against her while holding back, but this time, he would have to fight her seriously to overcome her in battle. He wondered if the phantasm would show her rage and hatred towards him for killing Baldur...

However, even harder to face than Freya, and almost as hard for him to face as either Deimos or Faye, was the Huldra Brothers. Kratos noticed that the first yellow portal, unique in that it was isolated from the other eight, had the brand of the Huldra Brothers, making it clear he would have to face both Brok and Sindri in combat. Kratos could only wonder if Sindri would express his hatred and anger towards him for Brok's death in a much more overt way than the coldness with which Sindri treated him during Ragnarök and Brok's funeral, or if it would be Brok, blaming him for his fate.

The other yellow portal, on the other hand, was unique in that it carried Bifrost eyes, a spellbook, and a mystical staff. Ah, that would be Mimir if only he could have pursued ways to be able to engage in battle. Týr's words made Kratos's eyes perk up in curiosity. Mimir, capable of fighting? That would be quite an interesting idea. Wow, got to admit Valhalla must have high expectations and hopes for the Smartest Man Alive. Like, I was never really a warrior, but to think Valhalla believes I can be a fighter if I put my mind to it? Mimir said, looking genuinely interested.

I have discovered a way with which I could potentially allow you to regain your mobility, Mimir. Maybe, after seeing this through, you could start learning how to fight the way Valhalla believes you can be. Týr spoke kindly as Kratos hummed. That would be an interesting prospect. Mimir, no longer just a head, but in his body, capable of facing threats beside him rather than just offering advice.

Well, I guess I should try then, but for now, I think I'll just stick by Kratos as a head until we've cleared up all this stuff. Considering the sheer amount of threat these "phantoms" have, I think Kratos could use my advice, maybe even use my Bifrost eyes to beam up enemies, although it'll be unpleasant, alright. Mimir said with a shrug as Kratos nodded, refocusing his thoughts on what lay ahead.

He eyed the third yellow portal. It had the insignia of beautiful paintings, which represented both magical energy and elements, as well as that of a sword and a shield. It was most likely Angrboda. As for the last yellow portal, Kratos recognized it as Thrúd, from how the insignia was that of a Valkyrie wings, Mjölnir, a machete, and a mace. He had to admit he was quite interested in the idea of facing the two close friends of his son, obviously either nearing or already at their peaks. Maybe he could offer them some guidance from his experience in seeing what they could be capable of...

The last of the Jötnar quite close to her full potential, as well as my niece and Thor's daughter about the time when she would become a true Valkyrie... Quite the good choice of foes. It pleases me to know that the Jötnar will eventually have the next generations, with your son Atreus being quite romantically interested in her. Kratos nodded simply, having known of Atreus's feelings for Angrboda and seen her as a worthy candidate for being Atreus's future wife. At the same time, I also wonder if the fact that the two are placed side-by-side with your son means he will also take Thrúd as his wife.

Kratos's eyes widened as Týr shrugged. Polygamy is, after all, a practice within these lands. You yourself have been married twice, and you still love both your first wife and your second wife equally. If that does happen, I believe you should support your son. After all, Thor's death was a tragedy. He should have had the chance to be better, but I have hopes that his daughter would be able to redeem his name and legacy. Kratos exhaled deeply as he nodded. It was true, all of it. Lyssandra was still someone he loved dearly despite having grown to love Faye, and if that was what Atreus wanted, then he would approve of it.

Týr smiled solemnly. Now, let's move on to the "Memoriam of Distant Past", shall we? Kratos steeled himself as he nodded and placed his hand on the second rune. Instantly, the portals vanished and was replaced by twice the amount of new portals, about 21 portals. Kratos recognized the horse, bow, and axe of the Barbarian King Alrik easily amongst the yellow portals, frowning a bit at the sight, although he felt sorrow at seeing the sword, shield, and arms of The Last Spartan, the fact that he had killed the man who loyally served him twice, first with his own hands and secondly with the cataclysms of Greece, haunting him.

(He died for the glory of Sparta, hoping that I still carried the spirit of Sparta with me, but in the end, I was the one who most likely brought Sparta to it's ruin...)

Kratos shook off those thoughts with a mournful shake of his head as he recognized the symbols of Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus easily enough within the red portals, relatively unfazed by the idea of having to fight Poseidon and Hades once more, although he felt some flickers of doubt at the sight of the thunderbolts of Zeus. His eyes narrowed at the sight of Ares and Athena's portals amongst the yellow ones. He knew what they were easily enough. Even now, their memories still stung at him.

Helios was admittedly an opponent he was somewhat conflicted to challenge, considering how he had realized that Helios did not deserve his death, although he supposed this would be a chance to put his grievances with Helios to rest. Perhaps, that way, Helios would not appear anymore in Valhalla. However, that paled compared to seeing Hephaesthus's symbol. The Blacksmith God's demise was one of his deepest regrets. He was absolutely undeserving of death at all, and even at his worst, Kratos still felt remorse over killing a father who just wanted to protect his own child.

Kratos admittedly felt neutral about facing Hercules. He had respected his half-brother's might and skill, and found it unfortunate that Hercules chose to side with Zeus because he believed Kratos himself was the favorite of Zeus, back when he was still the "Ghost of Sparta". However, although Kratos still respected Hercules's skill, he no longer held regret over Hercules's death, for he wanted to be the God of War for the wrong reasons.

The same could be said for Hermes. He was nothing more but an annoyance, and Kratos wouldn't have cared to kill him even then if only he had not kept getting in the way, although he could not say he had any respect for Hermes.

Atlas brought complicated emotions from Kratos. On one side, the fact that Atlas was condemned to forever bear the weight of the world in his shoulder was a cruel fate, but on the other side, his plans with Persephone lead to him being forever separated from his daughter, Calliope. Chronos, however, earned Kratos's particular anger. He was the one who started the cycle of parent abusing and killing their children on Greece, after all. As for Gaia... Kratos didn't know what to feel about her at all.

Kratos recognized the symbols of the bow and powers of Apollo and Artemis, although he had to admit he was curious as to how they would be like, considering he had never gotten to face them in combat himself. The same could be said for Demeter and Hestia. He did not bear any particular grudges towards any of those four Olympians, but as a warrior, he was curious as to how their powers and attributes could be translated to performing in battle.

Are you alright, Kratos?

I've never seen you look like that, brother. Are you sure you are ready?

... I will do my best and overcome the odds of the past. That is all. Kratos said solemnly in response to Mimir and Týr's words. Týr nodded in particular understanding as Kratos next turned towards the Echoes of the Closest Past. As soon as he pressed the rune, 14 portals replaced the portals of his past, with Kratos noticing that more than half of them had the designation of a red portal, signifying their difficulty level.

Kratos easily recognized Odin and Thor's portals, Gungnir and Mjölnir being quite distinct, although Kratos also recognized runes, mystical anchors, and birds making up Odin's portal, as well as a mace, sword, shield, and some ice in Thor's portal. The red portal beside Odin was that of what seemed to be a ship with wind and water.

Njörd, King of the Vanir, I take it. He was killed by Odin himself in a brutal fight that pushed the All-Father himself to his limits. Of course, he had yet to learn what Freya was willing to teach him about the magics of the Vanir, but even so, I daresay he was only slightly below Thor and Freya in terms of majestic might amongst both tribes of the Gods. Kratos hummed at Týr's words as he wondered how Freya and Freyr's father would fare.

That ain't just it at all! Brother, I REALLY didn't expect Valhalla to be THAT thorough in creating challenging enemies for you. Look! The portals on the left side! There's Jörmi, Hraesvelgr, and Starkaðr, three of the strongest Giants aside from the primordials Surtr and Ymir themselves! On top of that, there's also Skaði. Four red portals based at the very top of the Jötnar... You're really in for some serious challenge, brother. Mimir said, looking genuinely awed and afraid at the same time, as Kratos said nothing. He was not afraid of it, certainly, but saw it as an obstacle to overcome.

Consider it a way to commemorate the Giants, Mimir. In particular, Starkaðr and Skaði both suffered deaths that did not become a warrior, so Kratos can now face and defeat them fair and square. I can sense that their restless souls are actually summoned into those portals, instead of being simply phantoms. Týr stated calmly as Kratos merely nodded in approval. Their fates were quite tragic, and perhaps Kratos would be the one to redeem them by allowing them to fall against him in battle.

Well, up to you Brother. Mimir said softly as Kratos could feel some regret at the mention of Starkaðr, which was natural considering Mimir's advise to Odin was what lead to Starkaðr's death. Now, Magni, Modi, and Kvasir are colored yellow, while Sif and Freyr make up the red portals. I recognize Heimdall's Hofund easily, but what about that sparkling gauntlet and a series of runes? Týr's face turned solemn at that.

That... Is Baldur. Perhaps Valhalla's image of what Baldur could have been capable of had he been allowed to reach his full potential, had Freya been able to remain a good mother to him. Týr said with clear sadness in his voice as Kratos's face softened from the grunting he had when he heard Heimdall's name. Let us move forward, shall we? The last of the runes within the altar, that of Creators and Destroyers.

As soon as Kratos pressed the rune, there were a few shakes of the ground as the Garden of Phantasm rumbled for a minute until the portals finally emerged. All of them were red, naturally. Let me see... Ymir, the First Giant, whose power was great enough that Odin in his youth could only kill him with the aid of Vli, and Ve, the two of whom ended up dying in the process, and even now, he remains Odin's superior in power. Surtr, the First Fire Giant, who brought heat to the Nine Realms and created the sun and stars using his Primordial Flame.

Wait, Ymir and Surtr!? You mean Kratos would have to face the two Primordials themselves!? Kratos merely nodded in stoic anticipation at Týr's words despite Mimir's clear alarm. Primordials... He had fought and killed Thanatos before, despite having not reached the height of his power even when he was still the Norse God of War. He wasn't arrogant to believe he could win easily, but Kratos had faith in his capabilities.

And the next one would be Chaos herself. The most powerful of the Primordials of Greece, she was the most prevalent of the survivors of the Primordial War and the one who created all life within Greece before vanishing from existence. Her consciousness may have faded, but her being remained and was the same as the state with which you reduced Greece to after killing Zeus. After you released Hope into the world, the world of Greece was rebuild from Chaos once more, better and stronger than ever without the corrupted Olympians in charge. Kratos nodded solemnly at Týr's words.

I must say, I truly did not expect you to have to face the odds of Ragnarok itself. Kratos's eyes widened at Týr as he pointed at the red portal with the giant flaming sword and the crystal of fire and ice power. Surtr and Sinmara's combined form, the power that destroyed all of Asgard. As you can see, Kratos, you truly face quite the odds here within the Garden. Kratos merely grunted, but said nothing. Was there still much of his true potential that remained untapped, then, if Valhalla saw the need for him to be pushed to such odds?

And finally... Your past self, as I am sure you could recognize from the symbol of "War" at the center portal. Kratos said nothing as he eyed that particular portal coldly. He had not faced his past self in direct combat before after he was ready to walk through the door, but now it seemed it was time for him to truly overcome his past not just emotionally, but also physically. Are you ready, Kratos? Kratos nodded firmly as Týr smiled. Now then, let us return to the "Loved Ones" rune, shall we? You cannot face any of the fights within the gauntlet of the Creators and Destroyers yet, after all. It seems it will take you completing all the other fights before you could face such challenges.

Kratos nodded and pressed the Rune of the Loved Ones, causing the portals to change once more. Alright, that is all the fights you need to face. Before you go through all those challenges, though, I have quite a few things to help you with, Kratos...

Notes:

It may have taken this long, but I do hope this chapter gave you plenty of ideas as to how this story would unfold! Now, as an apology for taking longer, I'm going to allow you, my dear readers, to vote on which of the fights from the four gauntlets you would want to see first! Pose your votes on the comment section. Thank you for reading!

For now, the votes are:
1. The Loved Ones:
A. Thrud: 1 vote
B. Deimos (Red): 1 vote.
C. Mimir: 2 vote.
2. The Memoriam of Distant Past:
3. Echoes of the Closest Past:
4. Creators and Destroyers:

As each of you express your votes in the comments, I will update it here! You have until next week, 10th July, to post your votes! Do note that the Creators and Destroyers will be the very last, due to the system of all of it being red portals, and to a lesser extent, this applies to the other gauntlets of the Garden of Memorial Phantasm. HOWEVER! That doesn't mean you can't vote them. They will be taken into consideration and made the first of the red portals that Kratos would tackle. Just don't expect to see them until quite some time later!

Chapter 3: What The Future Holds

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

What can you help me further with, Týr? Kratos looked at the God of War of the Nine Realms curiously as the man turned towards the right corner of the Garden, below the staircases that lead to the portals. His question was answered soon enough when Týr unveiled what seemed to be a switch of some sort and proceeded to lower down the lever, then turned towards the left corner, cast the same revealing spell, and lowered the lever on the other switch too.

Soon enough, the Garden seemed to expand further, shaking up a bit as the ground where the altar was stationed revealed a staircases down what seemed to be a hidden corner of Garden, as Týr jumped down to the ground, landing gracefully and without any unnecessary impact, before he gestured at Kratos to follow him. He marched onwards, keeping a watchful eye on Týr. Well, brother, seems we're in for quite a few tough challenges, huh? Still, I've got your back, brother. Kratos nodded in approval at Mimir's staunch declaration of support.

I know. As for Týr's offer, I personally believe it's a good way for you to be able to truly make things right. You can put what talents you have to good use not just for intellectualizing, but also for battle. Sigrun would also appreciate you having a body, as well. Kratos reasoned out as Mimir said nothing for a while.

... I guess you're right, brother. It's just that a part of me wonders if I would be better off as just a head. Maybe I deserve to remain like this, as a form of penance for all the aid I gave Odin back when I was still a young, stupid man. Kratos exhaled deeply as he held out Mimir's head, the Smartest Man Alive appearing genuinely uncertain of himself. Just give me time to think about it, brother. I think self-reflection is something I should seriously start engaging in too. Kratos nodded solemnly as he placed Mimir back into his belt.

The rest of the long walk was that of silence. The passage downwards was neither too dark or too bright, and didn't have any foes for him to vanquish. They reached the edge of the passage soon enough. At the end, there was a huge hall split into two. The right side had a table containing several tools and ingredients to upgrade equipment, while the left side had a combat arena of some sort, separated by a wide line of magical energy. Týr walked towards the right side of the hall, with Kratos following suit.

As you have entered the Garden of Memorial Phantasm, the old rules of Valhalla requiring you to perform the Ritual of Selection is now overcome, as long as you tackle the challenges of the Garden alone. The gauntlets of Valgrind will still require you to follow the same old rules, but in here, you have access to all the upgrades to your armor and equipment you've obtained in your previous journey. Kratos nodded simply. He supposed it would make sense for Valhalla to allow him complete access to his arsenal when the enemies he would face now were more difficult than ever.

However, even though they are now back to their finest form, they can be further upgraded through special materials and rewards of Valhalla that you can require from defeating the challenges of the Garden. Besides, your new bow and mystical gauntlet could also be upgraded too. I also happen to have certain gifts and skills I would like to give you from my time in other lands. Kratos's eyes widened slightly at that. Are you interested in accepting my gifts, Kratos? I have faith you could benefit much from it. You have more potential than I myself did, after all.

I believe I would like that. Kratos said after a few moments of consideration. Týr had proven worthy of his trust before, had helped him embrace the fact that he could become not just the God of War, but the God of Hope. He supposed he only felt some disappointment and regret that Atreus could not be there with him in this moment, as he learned the arts of lands beyond Greece and the Nine Realms from the God Atreus always admired.

Týr smiled at him at that, and nodded as he went to the left hall, casually crossing through the magical lines that separated the right and left sides of the room. It'll only serve as a barrier if we are fighting, Kratos. Come here, and let us begin your lessons, Kratos. Kratos said nothing as he crossed the line and stood at the left arena facing Týr. Now, fire an arrow at me, Kratos. This skill is one that combines defense with offense, so I need you to attack me first with a projectile weapon. Use any one of your mystical arrows.

Kratos nodded as he armed himself with the bow, swiftly nocked one of the arrows, and said the word "Ljösta", the same words with which Atreus fired arrows made of the pure light of Alfheim. He was mutely relieved when it worked just fine and the arrow was enchanted by the Light of Alfheim as it launched towards Týr. However, what Týr did in return took even someone as experienced as Kratos by surprise.

The Norse God of War performed deliberate, flowing motions, his right hand glowing with black energy and his left hand glowing with white energy, and the arrow was seemingly disintegrated while the energy of the Light of Alfheim was absorbed into Týr's hands. Týr then positioned his right and left hands into a circular form, before unleashing the Light of Alfheim back at Kratos in the form of a blast of energy, which caused Kratos to immediately use his Guardian Shield to block the attack.

That's a skill I picked up from another land named Chinese. Their pantheon is called "Tao", and they focus on spiritual balance and the ability to manipulate one's life-force for a wide variety of effects. That particular skill is named Tai Chi, a form of combat that seeks to deflect attacks and redirect the force used by enemies against them. However, you are not yet ready to learn a skill as complicated as this. For now, we shall begin with easier practices, shall we?

Kratos said nothing as he nodded. He had grown to respect Týr greatly since their spars in Valhalla, not only for his formidable skills in combat and his immense power, but also for his wisdom and his versatility. However, Kratos had the feeling that Týr was still holding himself back, even though the God of War of these lands already fought at a level similar, but somewhat inferior, to that of Thor and Odin. Was it possible that his travels into foreign lands not only gave him new skills, but also allowed him to grow mightier?

We'll begin by you learning the form of swordsmanship I learned from one of the Eastern Lands, a nation named Japan. Before that, though, I would like to spar with you using the Blade of Olympus alone, without any other weapons. After all, we're focusing on swordsmanship right now, and you didn't use the manifestation of the Blade much in our duel. I would need to get a feel of your swordsmanship skills before I could teach you. Kratos nodded as he withdrew the Blade of Olympus from the sheathe he now had while Týr drew his distinct blade which came from the nation named Japan.

Without any further ado, Týr attacked while Kratos swung the Blade of Olympus to match the God of War's own blade. As Týr had suspected, in their previous spars, while Kratos already experienced Týr's flexibility, now that they both were sparring with just a single weapon, it meant that Kratos could now see the full depth of Týr's swordsmanship. He had to admit Týr was surely exceptional in using the art, even though he could only analyze Týr's skills in the sword style he learned from "Japan".

The way with which Týr wielded his blade was unlike anything he had seen before, making even the masterful skills of the synchronization between the blades and the movements of the Light Elves appear amateurish, with even the swordsmanship and command of form wielded by the Light Elf Queen herself being noticeably inferior. It was truly exceptional, for Týr fought with utmost discipline and precision, his techniques based on skillful footwork, proper posture, and true control over the blade.

Kratos was able to keep up with him, but he was completely matched with Týr in terms of swordsmanship. Although Kratos had not refined his swordplay as much since he left Greece, he did still improve on it as much as he could, and his fighting style now focused on methodical and measured sword techniques instead of the wild, yet undeniably precise and effective, sword maneuvers he used back when he was still the Ghost of Sparta. He also improved on his defensive skills with the sword and devised more effective counters, and it suited him well now that he had a sword he would regularly be fighting with since he came into these lands.

Faye did teach him some swordsmanship from the Nine Realms which he implemented, although the techniques of Greece dominated over the techniques of these lands when it came to swordsmanship. And yet Týr's techniques were so refined and unique that Kratos seemed only able to adjust to about half of it. It was clear to him from the start that Týr was using foreign forms.

Using strategic footwork, Týr managed to position himself in situations where he could expose openings to land strikes on Kratos, with only Kratos's well-honed reflexes saving him for most of the time but still sustaining some minor hits, and he also made good use of techniques unfamiliar to Kratos to maintain proper distance from him, preventing Kratos from landing any meaningful hits either. They had only landed 3 hits on one another by now.

On top of that, Týr's precision in controlling his blade allowed for a meticulous range of sword attacks with minimal movements that even Kratos had to admire. He seemed to rely on proper grip and subtle manipulations of the blade in a way that would seem imperceptible to most warriors, and while Kratos could perceive his techniques, he struggled to anticipate the pattern of them, as Týr seemed to have a plethora of combinations. Týr relied more on the movements of his wrist and finger, parts of the hand that were difficult to keep an eye on.

Eventually, after 5 minutes of intense sword bout, both Kratos and Týr found their necks at the point of one another's blades, making it clear the duel had ended in a stalemate. The two of them nodded at one another as they withdrew their blades, their wounds healing swiftly as their godly physiology kicked in. That was WAY above the paygrade of any other Aesir swordsman, brothers! Even I never expected you to be so skilled in the ways of Japan's swordsmanship. From what I know of them, it seemed that you were a master of the fighting style of "Kendo", am I right?

Týr smiled as he nodded. Yes. Out of the sword styles I've learned, it was easily the most disciplined and formidable of them all. I might have studied as many forms and skills as possible, but I also knew which skill to center my fighting style on, so I adapted most of the sword techniques of other lands and from the Nine Realms into being more attuned to my preference for Kendo. I've never encountered an opponent who could match my precision until Kratos here came. I must admit I was actually expecting to have the upper hand, but instead you battled evenly with me the entire time.

Amazing, and that was with you not focusing on improving your swordsmanship since you left Greece, I take it? Kratos nodded simply, making sure to not appear insulting, as Týr merely smiled. Well, I still have a few left that I didn't get to show, but it seemed that the same could be said for you. You didn't use the swordsmanship you would have surely learned from Laufey, after all. I knew her, Kratos, and before she got her hands on the Axe, a sword was her primary weapon, and she wielded it with enough skill to have defeated many Aesir, including powerful masters of the sword.

Kratos merely grunted as he nodded. Faye did teach me a fair share of the swordsmanship of the Nine Realms, but while I've learned to incorporate them with decent mastery, having not practiced with a blade much and focusing more on fighting with the Axe and the Shield has not allowed me to achieve any improvements in swordsmanship since her passing, especially as I also had to train my son in archery and other forms of combat.

Kratos exhaled deeply, feeling some solemnity hit his heart at the reminder of Faye's death. I did teach Atreus swordsmanship, but not much, as Atreus seemed to focus more on fighting with the bow, and his skills with the bow as a melee weapon could match a competent swordsman, so I reserved the more advanced levels for later. Týr did not judge him at all, merely smiling as he nodded, waiting patiently for Kratos to finish. Like you said, had the fight continued and you unveiled more of your swordsmanship, I would have felt the need to even tap into the skills of the sword Faye taught me, although I am not sure I could have bested you.

Humble, indeed, but let us just acknowledge that our duel ended in a draw and move forward. Now, Kratos, would you prefer to learn from me right now, or would you rather take on at least a few of the challenges of the Garden before you begin learning foreign skills? Kratos thought about it for a while, before he came to a decision. He only had been truly measuring up his improvement in both strength and skill since he came to Valhalla against Týr, so Kratos supposed he should first test out just how far he had advanced by fighting a different opponent.

The latter. I believe I would like to truly clarify how much I had improved myself first before I begin to learn from you, Týr. Týr merely smiled as he nodded approvingly.

Very well, Kratos. However, before you begin, I suppose you should start by learning how to harness your old magics from Greece once more, and I know the right way to do that. Sit down, Kratos. Kratos eyed Týr for a while, before he nodded and sat down, mimicking Týr's approach. He had to wonder if he really could wield the same powers he once had as the God of War of Greece, although a part of him still felt somewhat anxious about harnessing the magics with which he used in his unjustified quest for vengeance.

I'll just be frank and say this, Kratos, that you're special. You've absorbed the greatest magic in all of Greece, Hope, and though you have released it into the world, it still lives inside you and thus, deep down, you retain a connection to the magics of your homeland. If anything, I would say the powers you would manifest now would be even stronger than your original, since you would be drawing upon Hope to fuel those powers, instead of just your godhood as the God of War. Kratos's eyes widened at Týr's explanation as he looked down on the scar that remained where Zeus first killed him and then Kratos stabbed himself to release Hope.

After all this time, even though Hope was now used by the people of Greece to rebuild, from what Týr said? Hope still remained within him? Even though Kratos had now decided he would be more than just the God of War, but also a god that could inspire hope, he still believed what Týr said before he walked through that door as just metaphorically, but to think it was true, that he still possessed the POWER...

As though noticing the conflict within him, Týr spoke out. But above all else, Kratos, YOU are perhaps the ultimate embodiment of the very concept of hope itself, not just wielding it's magic. Even at the darkest of your life, you never truly gave up on hope, even if you sought it in the poorest of ways, and now, your ability to retain hope has allowed you to get as far as you have now. Remember that, Kratos, and not only will you regain your old powers, but you can also wield the purest powers of Hope itself. Kratos exhaled deeply at Týr's words of wisdom. He supposed that even now, he still retained some of his old negativity and had some work left to do about his issues.

Now, let us begin. Follow my instructions, Kratos, and let us begin. This meditation technique is designed to unlock powers hidden deep within a person. First, you will need to symbolize one of the powers you once wielded as the Greek God of War. Do not attempt to regain all of them at once, for that is folly. Are you ready? Kratos nodded at that as Týr smiled.

Do you think he would be alright? Taking on the gauntlets of Valgrind were meant as a training exercise for all souls who end up in Valhalla, but the Garden of Memorial's Phantasms is something even we, Shield Maidens, know little about. It's the most closed-off part of Valhalla, one that we have no influence or the ability to reach. Freya said, unable to help her worries despite having seen personally how powerful and skilled Kratos was. On the other hand, her Shield Maidens did not share her concerns at all. Freya would admit she was more often busy in dealing with her council than watching over Kratos, so she didn't get to see his displays here, but-

Relax, my lady. Kratos is a warrior without equal, second to none, in both power and skill, and that was already before he entered Valhalla. Now, he is even stronger and more capable in battle than he was before. The only thing I find a shame is we really can't watch over how Kratos would handle his old enemies. Why, I'm already imagining Kratos having rematches with Thor and Odin, and I can't help but feel both excited for Kratos and disappointed we can't watch him fight. Freya shook her head in exasperation over Gunnr's ever-present fascination with battle and clear admiration of Kratos, while Sigrun, if anything, only looked amused.

She supposed since Sigrun was the one who took Gunnr into the ranks of the Valkyries, that was to be expected. Indeed, my lady. Kratos has my full confidence that he would survive and grow mightier than ever before. Besides, Týr is looking after him, and we all know we can trust him. I must say, his spars with Kratos were quite exemplary. Despite his captivity by Odin, he remains worthy of the prestige the people of the Nine Realms worshipped him with and, had he wished for it, the title of the God of War.

Freya sighed as she nodded solemnly. She supposed Sigrun was right. Maybe she was just too concerned for Kratos. Even now, she still wondered how far they had come since Fimbulwinter began-

Ah, there you are. Freya's eyes widened as soon as she recognized the voice of Týr. The original God of War smiled at her as he stepped out of a portal of some sort. Come with me, all of you. I understand you are worried about Kratos, so I am offering you a front-row seat into witnessing Kratos's battles with the demons of his past, present, and future.

Notes:

As you can see, Kratos will be taking QUITE the few levels of badass, although considering how difficult the Garden of Memorial Phantasm is, with hordes of superboss after superboss, you can definitely say he's still not going to stomp anyone he fights, although a few relatively easy fights might be here and there.

Kratos's fights in the Garden of Memorial Phantasm will likely start in the next two chapters, since the next chapter will be an interlude of some sort, a place for you all to place your votes on which fight you want to see first. I'm also going to explain some of my ideas as to what will make the fights in the Garden of Memorial Phantasm by no means easy, so you can get a better clarity as to what you want to see next. Do hope you enjoy what this story has to offer next!

Chapter 4: Discussion (1)

Chapter Text

So! This story is essentially about Kratos facing off against 3 gauntlets full of high-difficulty to super boss-level fights inside a new section of Valhalla I created. This chapter will explore the necessary details for you all to learn about this story, and, after much deliberation, I have decided that this is the place where votes for which fight you want to see next is going to happen, specifically in the "Loved Ones" Gauntlet. As such, I am going to put a note on the notice of the story, so you all will know where to find this.

A. Explanation of the Garden of Memorial Phantasm:

The concept of the Garden of Memorial Phantasm itself is based on my knowledge of the Garden of Assemblage in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and the datascape version used in Kingdom Hearts III Remind that allows battles with super bosses in the form of the data of the Organization XIII. Combine that with Valhalla's properties to draw out memories, and thus the idea of the Garden of Memorial Phantasm came up in my head. Of course, I had no intention of just making a replica of an already-existing idea, so I got more creative and decided to add in opponents Kratos never got to face before. Here are some information on the designs of the Garden of Memorial Phantasm:

The Symbolization of the Nine Realms: As Valhalla is basically the afterlife, I imagine it must be connected to the other Nine Realms, in order to be able to pull in souls  so that's why I designed nine waterfalls, each of them having the runes of the Nine Realms. The waterfalls are distinct to represent the uniqueness of each Realm:

  • The waterfall representing Muspelheim is comprised entirely of lava, the waterfall representing Niflheim being that of frozen water flowing down in streams.
  • The waterfall of Svartalfheim is black in color and emanates smoke, while the waterfall that represents Alfheim, naturally, flows crystalized light down instead of water.
  • The waterfall of Midgar, on the other hand, is just plain water, while the waterfall of Jotunheim, although still pure water, also glitters and has the sweet aroma of Jotunheim in it.
  • The waterfall of Helheim is... Not really a waterfall to be honest, but instead a fall of pure ice and wind constantly emanates from it. Considering that it's HELHEIM, I think that's natural. Kratos didn't react or acknowledge it before because he was focused on what he came to the Garden for, but I'll try and include his reaction to it eventually.
  • The waterfall of Vanaheim has a certain mystical blue color into it, while the waterfall of Asgard is purple in color due to Asgard's association with the Bifrost.

The Bifrost Sky: Now, while the Bifrost Bridge on ASGARD was destroyed, I have a certain... imagined lore to explain why Valhalla's sky is covered with Bifrost. However, I can't explain why yet. You'll eventually get to learn about it from Týr, the "Mister Exposition" of Valhalla.

B. The Gauntlets of the Garden:

As you would know if you had read the second chapters, the Garden of Memorial Phantasm is divided into three gauntlets (Loved Ones, Memoriam of Distant Past, Echoes of the Closest Past, as well as Creators and Destroyers), and the first one we'll be seeing Kratos tackle is the Loved Ones Gauntlet. Clearing each gauntlet will earn Kratos special rewards, you could say, and what they are, read to find out.

These discussion chapters will be released at least two more times, since after completing each gauntlet, a discussion chapter will be released to allow you all to learn what is up next and elaborate on the lore that has been given. I do hope you enjoy them!

C. 1st Gauntlet: Loved Ones:

Now, I can't say too much about what will happen once Kratos clears the first gauntlet, but let's just say that, compared to the more "physical" rewards Kratos will gain from the later gauntlets, the rewards for this gauntlet will be emotional and heartful. After all, they'll be Kratos's most emotionally painful fights, so I have to come up with the proper reward to make sure Kratos feels like those fights were justified beyond simply proving his worth. Anyway, here are hints as to what you can look forward to in this gauntlet:

  • Atreus (Red): Now, I'm just going to be honest with you all that Atreus is, a cut above even Freya and Faye, the strongest of the gauntlet of "Loved Ones". You could say he's a fully-matured Atreus with plenty of tricks up his sleeve from his travels to other lands and mastering the powers of both his god side and his giant side. He's a very powerful sorcerer, with lots of spells, from elemental to other forms of magic, and has a... particular affinity for ice magic due to being a Jötnar, you could say. On top of that, you'll find he can shapeshift with full control this time, and into more than just of course, an exceptional archer, on top of also being skilled with quite a few melee weapons and holding some serious physical power.
  • Freya (Red): Of course, how could I forget the mighty Queen of the Valkyries and Leader of the Vanir!? She's obviously amped up a LOT compared to her boss fight as Vanadis and her skills as Kratos's support companion in the game. Here, Freya has access to some of the other Shield Maiden/Valkyries weapons that she wields with some serious wicked skill, instead of just fighting with her sword or bow. On top of that, her arsenal of magical spells have been upgraded, and she can use the abilities of the other Valkyries. I suppose you could say her fight will be based on Sigrun and Gna's abilities as well as the powers she showed, along with my own modifications.
  • Faye (Red): Ah yes, Faye. The Giant who was able to fight on par with THOR himself. She obviously counts for being one of the three red bosses of the gauntlet of Loved Ones. As you can tell from reading the previous chapter, Faye is an exceptional swordswoman before she came to have the Leviathan Axe, and on top of that, she also trained Atreus into his archery skills. She's also obviously an excellent mage, and has had plenty of experience traveling the Nine Realms and fighting the Aesir before settling down with Kratos. I suppose you could say she's both incredibly strong AND quite tricky to fight. She's no less difficult of an opponent than Freya, so I do hope you look forward to what I have in mind about Faye's abilities.
  • Deimos (Red): Now, don't be fooled by the fact that Deimos is the last within the order of the "red" portals on the gauntlet of "Loved Ones". I can assure you he IS very strong, even if he isn't as strong as the other red portals. He's going to be making quite the wicked use of the Arms of Sparta and those gauntlets of his, and has special powers that you might find a pleasant surprise, I hope! I can't say too much about Deimos, but let it be known that Kratos is not going to curb-stomp him AT ALL.
  • The Huldra Brothers: Oh boy, now this one is going to be quite the hard pill for Kratos to swallow. As though the guilt of Brok's death wasn't enough, now he has to face a superlative replica of Brok here, on top of also contending with Sindri and his brutal hatred. You can expect to see quite a lot of magic and surprises with their hammer and swords, on top of also quite a lot of blacksmith stuff, in the fight. Let's just say that they are unique in that the first phase doesn't start off that painful for Kratos, but the second phase is heartrending, to say the least. I can't spoil too much, so I'll leave it at that.
  • Mimir: Ha ha ha... I do hope people who love Mimir, especially when his Bifrost eyes shine down on enemies all while he was making comments about how unpleasant it was, would enjoy seeing Mimir actually fighting. Mimir's quite the magical fighter here, and though Freya and Atreus would have the advantage when it comes to pure magic here, he's got quite a few special spells and weapons that might be challenging for Kratos. On top of that, that staff and spellbook of his... Let's say it's hiding quite a lot of secrets.
  • Thrúd: The future self of the Daughter of Thor Kratos will be fighting is not quite the greatest Shield Maiden yet, but I think you'll find her one of the tougher challenges for sure. With Mjölnir on top of having such a heavy machete and mace to fight with, along with having Valkyrie wings and "quite hardcore Valkyrie magic", you could say, she's pretty tough. She might even compare to Sigrun, to put it simply.
  • Angrboda: Ah yes... The primary love interest of Atreus, although, as those who have read the second chapter, not the ONLY one. Her future self that Valhalla has envisioned will obviously spam quite a lot of magical painting spells, although she also has a fair share of other magic tricks and Jötnar powers up her sleeve too. On top of that, she's also a pretty strong melee fighter with her sword and shield.

Well, that is all there is to reveal for now! The votes I've already got were Mimir as the first opponent Kratos fights and the second one was Thrúd, so that's the ones I'll start working on. You have until the end of July to decide on which fights you want to see next, from the Huldra Brothers or Angrboda. Remember that the Red ones can only be accessed AFTER Kratos has defeated all the others, but you can vote them still, so the ones that have the most vote will be the first red portal Kratos tackles.

Finally, in this discussion chapter, along with other discussion chapters, you can freely ask any questions, and I'll do my best to answer them. Please do express your thoughts in the comments, and vote to your heart's content!

Chapter 5: The Potential of the Counselor

Notes:

I am sorry that this chapter took a lot longer than expected to release! Been busy with my judiciary. Still, do hope you enjoy Kratos vs Mimir!

Codex Update:

Týr

I have sparred with Týr for about 15 times by now, and recently, I have been able to surpass the strength he used to catch my punch, something I could not achieve before. And now Týr has revealed a new area of Valhalla for me, the Garden of Memorial Phantasm, where I may face the past, the present, and the future. I do not doubt Týr's wisdom and his judgment, for he has made it clear that he is worthy of both my trust and my respect, but as Mimir noted and I myself could tell, the look of concern in Týr's face when he introduced to me this place speaks of the challenges I would face from the Garden, and I was right.

Still, Týr has made the unprecedented offer for me to learn from him, be it in the ways of unlocking the powers that were buried deep inside me since my foolish crusade for vengeance or in the skills of foreign lands. It was an offer I had no qualms accepting, for Týr had already been like a mentor to me when I was travelling through Valhalla. His guidance and understanding of my plight was most crucial to my acceptance of the fact that I could become something better than my past as the God of War, to accept that mantle and also become something else.

It is apparent, though, that Týr is still holding back more cards to himself. It's not that he's more powerful than I am, but it's that his travels through other lands have earned him a great deal of flexibility as he came to master a wide variety of combat skills and magical arts. He made use of some of those spells and weapons from far-off lands, but I am aware he still has much he has yet to show. I can only hope to master those abilities in time.

As of now, Týr made me meditate for prolonged periods of time, over 3 hours, so that I was able to manifest once more some of the powers I once wielded on Greece. As Týr had stated, I was able to manifest them in stronger, more powerful forms compared to before. According to Týr, he seemed to believe that my powers, once I have mastered Hope, could arguably be nigh-unlimited, and quite possibly the most powerful being he would ever meet.

I am no longer the man who lusted for power, however, and it seemed that it was because I have changed that I was able to truly master the mystical parts of being a god. Before, I fought primarily with my physical abilities and mastery over weapons, relying less on the magical powers I have. Perhaps, though, after everything I have been through, from seeing Freya and Atreus's capabilities, I have gained a certain degree of appreciation for magic, and seeing Týr's apt usage of magic from foreign lands certainly further exacerbated my interest.

I suppose it would be nice to rely more on magic that came from my own godhood, instead of just channeling the mystical powers of a weapon. Perhaps this was what Faye saw in me, the stage where I could become what she drew in that mural... A true god, wielding both power and wisdom to care for the Nine Realms, earning the respect of the people and proving worthy of their worship by answering their prayers when those prayers were just...

So, brother, you sure you want to tackle little ole me first? I'm not sure I could ever be a challenge to someone of your level. Kratos said nothing at Mimir's attempts to lighten the mood. He knew it was a subtle display of Mimir's self-depreciation, his belief that he was unworthy to regain his old body. He supposed he could understand what Mimir was going at. For centuries, he had been Odin's advisor, only to regret all that he had done once he realized Odin's true nature. In a way, remaining in the unpleasant existence of being a reanimated head was a punishment for him.

But it's up to you, brother. Let's see if the Smartest Man Alive might actually surprise himself, for once. Magic, eh? Well, I guess magic is best suited for those with great minds, so me being a good spellcaster isn't that far-fetched. Kratos hummed at that, recognizing the clear message that, while a part of Mimir believed he deserved to remain just a reanimated head forever, there was also another part of him that felt hopeful that he could be capable of something more. Anyway, brother, how has Týr's meditation helped you out with your old powers? You had been meditating for 3 long hours before he called it a break and told you to get some direct combat.

Kratos hummed as he remembered the experience. Týr had essentially made him spend one hour per one magical power, telling him to remember the feeling of being empowered by the magic of the Olympians and wielding them, along with even remembering the feeling and impact of channeling the powers of the mystical artifacts he once had, and then visualize himself wielding that power in new, more refined ways compared to his previous usage of such magics.

The complex process of remembering deeply into the past memories of using such powers and then willing them to form a new shape entirely was why each unearthing of magical power required an hour, although Týr did say that Kratos would find it easier per each reflection. Apparently, for some reason, Týr knew that his divine magics sometimes tended to overlap with one another, such as Zeus's Fury and Poseidon's Rage being both lightning-elemental powers, so rather than simply regaining access to them, Týr had Kratos refine them.

The trick was that Kratos had to compare the subtle differences of the powers that were fundamentally similar and find the best ways to harmonize those differences, thus forming an entirely new, stronger magical power. In the end, the meditational process was divided into three, that of "Remembrance", "Understanding the Feeling of Power", and "Fusion". However, despite the difficulty, Kratos was proud to admit that neither process tested his patience. It only felt somewhat awkward, but he quickly got the hang of it.

And so here he was now, ready to face his first challenge. Without any further ado, Kratos climbed up the staircase towards Mimir's portal, and didn't look back as he casually stepped through, vanishing into the dimension that would be where his first challenge would take place.

So this is the Garden of Memorial Phantasm's inner sanctum, eh? The place where there could be practice matches and also do some upgrades on weapons. Sounds like this really is Valhalla's "most potent place" indeed! So, how are we going to be watching General Kratos's battles? Who's the first challenge he's tackling on? Gunnr said, clearly excited, as Týr remained calm, he and the Valkyries sitting down on the right side of the Hall of Preparations. (Speaking of which, he didn't really tell Kratos about the name of this place, did he? Oh well, that could be rectified later on.)

Mimir is the first challenge he will be facing, honestly. Týr said calmly as Freya looked at him with evident surprise, but that was nothing compared to Sigrun, whose surprise and concern Týr could easily recognize. What Mimir would be capable of, should he regain his body. I must say, I was not surprised. Mimir's sharp mind meant he should have a natural proclivity towards sorceries. Kratos was all for it, and I believe he intends to persuade Mimir to desire the return of his body. What do you think, Sigrun?

This is... A surprise. I would admit, I honestly never saw Mimir as a warrior, but to hear such a possibility presented, I must say, is both intriguing and pleasant. Perhaps, within a few years, he might learn to finally forgive himself and consider himself as... Worthy. Týr eyed Sigrun with a small nod as he recalled his observations of Kratos and Mimir's discussions of Mimir's relationship troubles with her, even as Gunnr began to tease her "boss" about how she seemed a bit sour the last time she and Mimir hit it off.

Suddenly, however, the globe Týr was using that would allow them to observe Kratos's battles lit up, signifying that Kratos had crossed through the portal. Ah, so he has finally began then. Let us see Kratos's journey together, my friends.

The dimension he arrived in after stepping through Mimir's portal was that of a huge arena at the center with 9 glowing Bifröst bridge-like structures connecting to it, each "bridge" having the runic symbol of the respective Nine Realms. Kratos looked into the sky, and saw how the sky was covered in a mixture of green, yellow, and red clouds. Such an arena would be well-suited for large-scale battles, indeed, so Kratos supposed it was purposefully designed by Valhalla to be that way. However, he didn't have time to think too much about the layout of the dimension as a flash of light occured, not bright enough to make Kratos cover his eyes, but certainly the beginning of the battle that was to come.

As soon as the light subsided, Kratos could then make out what Mimir would look like if he were to become not only a counselor, but also a warrior. Oh my... I must say, at the very least, that I am glad that I don't look like Odin at all even though I could be a sorcerer, but I've never considered myself the type to wear an armor, or ever get bulky. Still, not that I mind it. Perhaps this is a good sign that I can settle down pretty well outside my comfort zone.

Kratos hummed at that as he took in the appearance of Mimir at his full potential. The Smartest Man Alive wore not the elegant light blue tonics of Odin, but an enchanted silver armor. Kratos could notice that Mimir would never be too bulky, but the increase in his muscle mass compared to the body that was left behind in his tree prison was noticeable even with the armor blocking his view of it. He had the vivid imagination of Mimir doing some hard exercises to get that shape of body, and couldn't help but snort.

On Mimir's right hand, he had a staff with several rune-carvings, and on his left hand, there was a spellbook similar to the one Odin had used to unleash elemental powers against him, Freya, and Atreus back on Ragnarök, but much more intricate and bigger. And finally, Kratos noticed that Mimir's Bifröst's eyes shifted from glowing golden to purple and red. The look on the face of Mimir's potential self was one of eerie calmness, not saying anything as Kratos wondered if the Smartest Man Alive would be the first one to attack.

He got his answer when Mimir's Phantom unleashed 3 balls of pure Bifröst energy at him. Without any further preamble, Kratos focused as he activated the first magic he regained, conjuring a shield of rainbow-like lightning that was able to block Mimir's spells. So that's one of the magics you were able to regain? Lightning powers? I guess it must have been because you're the son of Zeus, so lightning magics would be more in line with your- Ups, my apologies Brother. Kratos merely shook his head at Mimir's abrupt pause and apology for bringing up his relation to Zeus.

No need. It is simply a fact that I am the son of Zeus, that I started out as being half human and half god. Despite all of Zeus's flaws and his deeds, I have accepted it long ago. Kratos stated firmly and stoically, as Mimir was silent for a while before letting out a small laugh. And that's good to hear, brother. Glad to see you're moving up. Well then, it seems the phantom of what I might be capable of in the future isn't eager to let us keep talking, so let's get into action, shall we? To be honest, brother... I'm actually looking forward to seeing this through.

Glad to hear it, Brother. Kratos said back with a small smile, noticing Mimir's clear hope for the future despite his previous skepticism and slight self-depreciation, even as he dodged Mimir's Phantom next spell, that of what seemed to be a burst of pure arcane energy upon Mimir's staff striking the ground, and retaliated by throwing a bolt of lightning at Mimir's Phantom, only for his eyes to widen when Mimir's Phantom casually caught the attack with his bare hands. Without even changing the stoic, eerily silent expression on his face, Mimir casually blasted back the bolt of lightning at Kratos, who dodged it easily enough.

Well, it looks like my future self can certainly do quite a lot of tricks, brother. You should get up close and fight him like the way you usually did, since using magic on him ain't a good option. Mimir cautioned, although his tone was also filled with wonder and awe, as Kratos withdrew the Leviathan Axe and charged towards Mimir's Phantom. He avoided the barrage of 7 fireballs conjured by Mimir's spell-book and jumped in reaction to Mimir's Phantom causing ice spikes to emerge in the ground at his direction.

He was, somewhat pleasantly, surprised when Mimir's Phantom vanished the spellbook on his left hand and used both hands and the staff to block his attack. Although Kratos wasn't using too much of his true strength, it was still more than enough to pierce through the skin of the Trolls. Though Mimir's Phantom grunted, he actually managed to push Kratos two feet back with a push containing all his strength and quickly teleported, reappearing behind him to throw a globe of Seiðr poison at him, which Kratos dissipated by summoning a gust of wind to blow the globe apart. Wind too!? So that's your second magic eh, brother?

No. It's the same magic as the one I used to manipulate lightning! Kratos replied in answer to Mimir's question as he easily blocked Mimir's Phantom charging at him with his staff coated in blazing fire with a simple swing of the Leviathan Axe, the act, despite being casual, containing enough force to knock Mimir's Phantom back. Kratos sheathed the Leviathan Axe as he attacked Mimir with hand-to-hand combat, keeping his close-range attacks not too overwhelming yet still pressuring and precise.

To further impress Kratos, although on the backfoot, Mimir's Phantom was clearly also surprisingly competent with using his staff in close-range, for he was able to maneuver the magical weapon to adequately block Kratos's onslaught of powerful punches and swift kicks. Although Kratos eventually landed three hits on Mimir's Phantom, to add to Kratos's pleasant surprise over what his friend would be capable of if he truly wished to engage in combat, he even managed to trip Kratos to the ground with the staff, using a feint that genuinely caught him off-guard before swinging his staff into Kratos's legs and pulling it up, knocking Kratos down.

Mimir's Phantom also knew better than to pursue the seeming "advantage", as he quickly levitated above the ground and blasted a stream of pure arcane energy that Kratos casually avoided. Mimir's Phantom didn't let up as he next created ten copies of himself that surrounded Kratos, all of them charging at Kratos swinging with their replicated staffs coated in the elements, 3 of them using fire, 4 of them using lightning, and the last 3 of the copies using wind.

Despite the numbers, Kratos casually dodged all their attacks with his sharp reflexes and systematically retaliated with precise punches and kicks that made them crumble into nothing without taking a single hit. However, Mimir's Phantom did not spare any more time as he had remanifested his spell-book on his left hand and lashed out with an array of runes that actually managed to cut Kratos in the chest. This made Kratos grunt even as he quickly channeled his godly powers into healing himself.

The next attacks were a series of runic circles thrown at Kratos that Kratos nimbly avoided, the effect of the attack exposed as the runic circles seemed to emit a constricting energy into thin air before exploding. Kratos armed himself with the bow he had been given by Freya and fired 10 arrows infused with the light of Alfheim in quick succession. Mimir's Phantom held out the spell-book in front of himself and recited the words "brjóta", causing the arrows to seemingly implode into dust.

Mimir's Phantom conjured several ice shards that he rained down upon Kratos, who switched to the Blades of Chaos as he swung the chained blades, blazing with the same fire as it always did, to destroy all those ice shards. Kratos then jumped up at Mimir's Phantom, acrobatically dodging the blasts of lightning thrown at him, and using a burst of electricity, enhanced his speed as to land a punch on Mimir's Phantom before he could react, throwing him to the ground even as he managed to keep both his staff and spell-book.

Mimir's Phantom, however, merely cast a spell of healing on himself, recovering from the bruise Kratos left on his right cheek and whatever damage he might have taken from the impact of being thrown down to the arena, as he then summoned what Kratos recognized to be spectral warriors, each of them armed with a sword, as they charged at him. He armed himself with the Blade of Olympus as he casually outduelled and struck each of them down, their forms dissipating into green dust.

Suddenly, however, a thin ray of arcane energy struck his gut, causing Kratos to grunt as he noticed Mimir's Phantom now surrounded himself with 3 orbs of pure magical energy. The orbs fired blasts at Kratos, who exhaled deeply as he tapped into the second magic he had regained and created a thick wall of rocks. The blasts tore at some of the wall, but in the end, the defense had held up against the onslaught of Mimir's Phantom. As soon as that, Kratos manipulated the rocks comprising the walls and shaped them into a spear to throw at Mimir's Phantom.

Okay, so your first magic can manipulate lightning and wind in one set, while your second magic revolves around earth, brother? What's the third magic? Let me guess, considering how you always seem so fiery when you're using that anger of yours... Flames? Kratos merely smiled slightly as the orbs surrounding Mimir's Phantom threw rays upon rays of arcane energy at the spear of stones Kratos threw at him until it finally exploded. Yet, the fact that he did not just absorb the spear of earth and turn it against Kratos meant that-

Did you notice that, brother? Seems like your earth magic is a weak spot to my potential future capabilities. Makes sense, since earth is unlike any other elements  in that it comes from the ground, so it can't be absorbed or turned against the wielder the way other elements could be turned against their users. From what I know of magic, Earth is the element of "Indomitability", in that it's hard to turn against the one who could manipulate it even by expert magic users. Kratos merely nodded as he next caused earth spikes to rise up from the grounds of the arena, marching towards Mimir's Phantom.

However, Mimir's Phantom surprised even Kratos with his next move as he placed his spellbook into the ground and slammed his staff into it. In an instant, the earth spikes were disintegrated to dust as the arena seemed to be entirely covered in arcane energy, Mimir's Phantom floating above the arena with two huge mystical orbs flanking him, the orb on the right side seemingly containing all elements and the orb on the left side filled with pure magical power. Okay, this is definitely a new level. Ready to finish this, brother? Kratos nodded calmly as he wondered what would happen next.

Mimir's Phantom unleashed Bifröst energy into the arena from his Bifröst eyes, causing eruptions of the Bifröst from the center of the arena outwards, forcing Kratos to manifest the Blade of Olympus and slam it to the ground, the divine energy of the blade cancelling the Bifröst energy. However, he didn't have time to rest as Mimir's Phantom next rained down several rays of Bifröst energy that immediately pursued him, causing Kratos to slash the Blade of Olympus, the immense power of his godhood channeled into his replica of the greatest weapon of the Olympians evident as the slash cut through all those rays.

The orb on Mimir's right side followed in next, attacking Kratos with a series of powerful thunder strikes charging towards him, causing Kratos to focus his newly regained magics into the Blade of Olympus as he channeled a wave of godly lightning that managed to cancel out Mimir's Phantom attacks. Not being idle, and as fearless and eerily silent as ever, Mimir's Phantom next threw in blasts upon blasts of elemental power, from fire, ice, lightning, and wind, which forced Kratos to defend himself using the Blade of Olympus by stabbing it to the ground and creating a powerful barrier of divine energy.

As Kratos emerged unfazed, he began to make his next move, placing the Blade of Olympus in front of him as he focused intensive amounts of divine power into the weapon, causing it to shine, before he slashed the blade forward, unleashing an enormous crescent slash of divine energy at Mimir's Phantom, who quickly placed the left orb in front of himself. The left orb was able to withstand Kratos's attack, but it still pushed Mimir's Phantom back roughly a few feet into the air. He hummed as Mimir's true potential swiftly regained himself and continued to battle.

Kratos dodged elemental crests that fired rays of the elements they were comprised of and slashed through several chakram-like pure arcane energy blasts from the left orb, noting on how the ones he didn't cut exploded upon impact. He tested some of Mimir's Phantom capabilities further as the Blade of Olympus destroyed what seemed to be actual meteors comprised of magical energy and cut down dozens upon dozens of copies of the Phantom. Truly, this was remarkable for someone like Mimir, who seemed to prefer to be the brains instead of fighting.

And as he had been expecting, Mimir's Phantom, embodying his friend's capabilities for magic, had more to offer than just those straightforward attacks. He generated orbs of green energy that emitted a mist of Seiðr poison, and even managed to once hit him with a black mist that temporarily blinded his eyesight, although Kratos's other senses allowed him to remain indomitable in his defense as he blocked Mimir's subsequent onslaught of mystical beams with the Blade of Olympus until he regained his eyesight back. He had plenty of experience by now from experiencing Týr's own dark curse.

However, as soon as he regained his eyesight back, dozens of magical blades surrounded him and immediately fired upon him, which Kratos deflected with ease at first, only for more and more of them to rain down, until Kratos was finally struck by the 48th blade straight in the heart. Grunting deeply as he finally felt pain, Kratos realized that while he had held back much to prolong the fight as to show Mimir exactly what he could be capable of if he truly put his mind into it, he could no longer afford to do so.

With that, Mimir's Phantom caused pillars upon pillars of magical energy to charge towards him but Kratos marched forward as he effortlessly cut through those pillars and jumped towards Mimir's Phantom. Mimir's Phantom, however, made the two orbs on his side vanish only for them to reappear behind Kratos, encasing him in a singular orb as Kratos could feel the mystical entrapment and the onslaught of magical blasts that would have been launched at him... Had he not simply focused his power into the Blade of Olympus and threw it to pierce through the confining orb while managing to pierce Mimir's Phantom straight in the heart.

As the orb containing Kratos vanished, Kratos watched as Mimir's Phantom remained silent and stoic, unmoving, until suddenly glows of golden light engulfed Mimir's Phantom, the Phantom's body disappearing into the light as the mystical energy surrounding the arena vanished, returning it to normal. The light, however, left behind what seemed to be 10 pages as Kratos approached them and picked them up. It seems to be instructions to perform some of the spells used by my "phantom", brother. Maybe you can use it with the mystical gauntlet you have?

Perhaps. We should return to Týr and see what he would make of it. Kratos said as a portal appeared behind him, signifying that he could leave the arena now. Listen, brother, I- I knew what you were doing back there, you know? You weren't going all-out at all, baiting that phantom of what I could do to show as many of his tricks as you could withstand. I knew, since you made no use of your weapons special magic abilities, you only made use of those new magics not even 5 times, not even making use of that last "fire" one, and you generally seemed really restrained compared to your usual action.

Kratos remained silent as he waited for Mimir to continue his words. Well... Count me touched, brother. Guess all those displays really did get to me. If I can command all that magic, that means I really should accept Týr's offer of regaining my body. Maybe I should also talk to Sigrun about what she thinks of this possibility... Kratos smiled as he nodded.

Let us leave this place then. I am glad to see you're finally interested in the prospect of regaining your body and being more than just an advisor. Remember, evolving beyond what you initially were is a highly difficult process. I knew, because I needed centuries to temper my rage and learn to find peace until I could be here right now. Mimir stayed silent for a while, until he suddenly choked a bit and Kratos gripped Mimir's head to reveal that he had been crying a little bit. He simply nodded encouragingly at the sight.

Týr smiled as he watched Kratos and Mimir exit the arena, about to see him and the Valkyries here soon. That was a splendid display of magical skill, indeed. I would know, and I suppose I was too hard on him, I would admit. Maybe I could help guide him on that path once he has regained his body. Freya commented as she looked genuinely impressed, which was obviously something, considering her standing as perhaps the most skilled user of magic in all the Nine Realms right now, with Týr not really being countable as he had transcended the magics of these lands.

This is... More than what I could have expected. It seems that my gratitude and debt to General Kratos has only increased, for he helped Mimir find himself. Sigrun said softly after a while, looking genuinely touched at the prospect of Kratos holding back as far as he did for the sake of his friend. Týr himself was quite impressed by the lengths to which Kratos went through, the self-control and patience he showed being very remarkable as he handled Mimir's Phantom.

It seemed, indeed, that the Nine Realms would be secure at the hands of Kratos now. He could be the God of War...

And the God of Hope as well.

Notes:

And that's THAT! I wanted to show how Kratos will not just become more powerful and gain some serious magics, but he'll also grow more as a person. Him holding back on Mimir's Phantom is a bit natural, since I don't see Mimir as an overpowered character, but still someone who can be very powerful if he tries, so I had to ensure the fight was challenging while making it clear that we haven't seen nearly all that he can do, since he still has quite a few learning and challenges left to tackle. Above all else, however, I wanted to show how Kratos can now think like that, becoming a better friend and getting ready for the responsibility and position he'll now have.

Anyway, the vote on Chapter Four has been prolonged to 15 August! I'll be busy trying to prepare myself to get a job, so you'll have plenty of time to post your votes there while I write the Kratos vs Thrud next. Wish you a happy reading and a good time voting!

Chapter 6: Further Learning

Notes:

Well, this took a bit longer than I thought, but here it is! Note, Kratos writing on the Codex here is my original idea. I do hope you enjoy how I showed Kratos writing more on his journal! Anyway, I would like to note that, after much consideration, I'm going to extend some of the time for the vote on chapter four, since I'm going to be a bit busy, so I'm not sure when I can finish the Kratos-Thrud fight. You now have until 22 August to post your votes!

Chapter Text

Codex Update:

Mimir:

Ever since I arrived on Valhalla, Mimir has proven himself to be just as invaluable of a friend as he has been since our first travels to the journeys we undertook on Ragnarök. He has patiently guided and lectured me about what I could do if I were to take up the position Freya offered me in her council. Although Týr was the one who completed the process, Mimir's company was still of vital importance during my journeys in Valhalla. And now... I have gained the opportunity to offer him true support as a friend, instead of simply relying on him for advice, which, as Mimir will doubtlessly admit, is a very rare opportunity.

It is clear to me as soon as I met the Valkyries on Valhalla that he and Sigrun have been experiencing trouble in their efforts to ignite the sparks of love between them. Mimir's crippling guilt over what he had did as Odin's advisor haunts him, on top of his current condition as being just a decapitated head, and thus he believed himself as unworthy of Sigrun. I can understand the burden of feeling immense guilt over the death of thousands of innocents, as he no doubt, even if unwillingly and unconsciously, played a role in, for I have done far more than anything Mimir could have done as Odin's advisor.

However, I also knew that, although difficult, redemption is possible. It is a hard journey to undertake for beings like myself, but in the end, if someone like me, who had ruthlessly killed in the name of my vengeance and selfishly condemned thousands, only realizing what I had done when it was almost completely too late, can find redemption, then I have faith Mimir could do the same.

Faye was the one who started my journey of redemption through all she engineered, and it was her love for me that allowed her to see the path that would lead to it, despite the Norns words about how, in the end, fate was nothing more but the sum of people's choices. She KNEW what I could become, so by knowing me, she could see my fate. And so I have spend much of my time on Valhalla since Mimir told me about his relationship problems trying to convince him that he could be what Sigrun needed, and in process, I also learned a bit more about his past before he came into these lands.

The fairie folk Mimir spoke of, lead by King Oberon, who feigned wisdom and charisma but was in truth a hypocritical tyrant... It seemed that Mimir's guilt ran deeper than I knew. One part of it could be attributed to how he considered himself as a self-righteous coward, for believing and doing the whims of those with power and only regretting it when it was too late.

What he either doesn't understand, or if he did understand, refuses to acknowledge, was that at least HE managed to see the truth eventually and regret it immediately upon realizing it, whereas I had experienced some moments where I realized that my actions were wrong... And I still did it all because in the end, I believed all that mattered was myself. In that regard, I am not ashamed to say he was better than me. Perhaps it was because as monstrous as my deeds were, I had no compunctions dirtying my hands and was fully capable of getting away with the physical consequences of it, while Mimir did all the bad things he did and only got away with it through subtlety, thus further reinforcing his image that he was a coward.

Nevertheless, I knew the burden of such feelings, and so I sought to help Mimir find peace with himself. When Týr revealed the Garden of Memorial's Phantasms, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Mimir was capable of becoming more than just an advisor, but also a protector commanding powerful magics, and that Týr had the capability to restore Mimir to a full body. However, Mimir himself didn't quite share in my beliefs in him, but in the end, he still regained some hope from the mere idea that he could be more than what he once was.

And so I challenged Mimir's Phantom first. It was a quite interesting experience, and a pleasant surprise to find him fighting with the discipline of a veteran warrior. Even if he fought mainly through spells, he clearly had the potential to become exceptional in his craft, and he actually even could prove to be competent in using that staff of his. I held back on him, yes, but he was still a formidable opponent. His magical abilities injured me, and I could almost say he was like Odin or Freya in terms of magical mastery.

In the end, it was all worth it as Mimir seemed to have gained true hope for his future. And the feeling of tears in his eyes, the choking sounds, as you realize that you can be better after all, it reminded me, pleasantly, of the time where I saw Faye's mural and realized just how much faith she had in me.

Welcome back, Kratos! Týr greeted him warmly as he arrived at the halls where Týr resided while overseeing his battles in the Garden of Memorial Phantasm. That was a splendid display, indeed. Your restraint, your composure and strategic thinking, and your ability to comfortably apply the three magics you have regained by now was truly impressive. Mimir's displays of magical ability was also truly exceptional. Even Freya here agrees with it. Kratos turned towards the direction where Freya and the Shield Maidens stood, the Queen of the Shield Maidens smiling as she nodded in approval.

Well, if even Freya, the current greatest user of magic in all the Nine Realms believes I can do good, then I suppose I really can be some serious spellcaster! Guess I'll wait until Kratos has finished needing me as an ever-present strategizing head, and then I'll take up your offer on getting my body back, Týr! Mimir said jollily as Kratos chuckled lightly. He truly was glad to have chosen Mimir first, and he could feel the bonds of brotherhood between him and the Smartest Man Alive deepen.

That was remarkable, Mimir. I suppose you truly do have the potential to be someone great beyond just your mind. I- I suppose I would like to say that, if you ever need my assistance in the path of sorcery, then I will gladly lend my aid to ensure you could become the potential you demonstrated. Freya said earnestly as Mimir humbly thanked the Queen of the Shield Maidens. As for you, Kratos, it seems that your tactics have refined compared to back when you just did things "the hard way". Kratos grunted a bit at Freya's jab over his tendency to focus on aggressive combat.

Sigrun approached Kratos as he quickly held Mimir out. May I ask for some time with Mimir alone? I believe... I have much to discuss with him. Kratos nodded at Sigrun's words as he watched Sigrun and Mimir leave through a tunnel heading deeper for some privacy. Kratos turned towards Týr as he held out the 10 pages Mimir's Phantom dropped upon his defeat. Týr took it upon his hands, analyzed them for a while, and then looked at Kratos's mystical gauntlet, smiling as he nodded.

I believe I know what must be done, Kratos. Týr said as he went towards one of the tables that was clearly designed to upgrade weapons, with Kratos following suit. Take out your bow first, please. Kratos placed the bow Freya gave him into the table as the Norse God of War hummed to himself before he levitated four of the pages and closed his eyes as though in deep focus. Eventually, those three papers vanished and Týr's hands now glowed with Bifröst energy as he infused the power into the bow, causing it to glow with the purple colors of the Bifröst before it receded.

Now, your bow can fire Bifröst arrows. The capabilities of your elemental arrows are also stronger. The thing with the items left behind when you clear one of the challenges of the Garden of Memorial Phantasm is that you don't need to be a blacksmith to be able to use them to upgrade your tools, but the thing is that, in the end, it's just a replica of the REAL powers possessed by your enemies, so you can't exactly gain access to much of their techniques, only some of them, and you also have to understand the proper ways to sacrifice those items to gain the upgrades.

In the end, Valhalla is all about balance: You CAN learn from your enemies, but you have to adapt their abilities to be suitable to your own. Kratos nodded calmly. He had already came to understand that Valhalla had it's ways of ensuring growth as a warrior through such means. Now, the next would be your gauntlet Kratos. I can give you a choice to gain either a defensive spell or an offensive spell. Which would you choose? Kratos thought for a while, until he decided that it would be better to increase his defensive options. In particular, he remembered how Mimir's Phantom absorbed his magical attack and turned it against him.

Kratos bent down and whispered in Týr's ear, who smiled as he nodded, as Freya stared at him and Týr with some bemusement. Understood, Kratos. A wise choice it is. So the rest of the 6 pages will be converted into that one tricky spell. I shall work on it immediately. For now, though, Freya, how about you teach Kratos how to cast spells from our lands magic? I see that, even though Kratos now had access to the gauntlet, he did not make use of spells at all when confronted by Mimir's Phantom. Perhaps you could teach him how to properly cast spells?

And that was how Freya found herself at the left side of the Hall of Preparations along with Kratos as she prepared to teach him magic. A part of her felt somewhat anxious, for she would be stepping back into the role of a magical teacher, something she did not have the best of experiences with due to her student being ODIN of all people, to say the least, but Freya had fought alongside Kratos more than enough to know that he would not abuse her teachings. So, Kratos, since you've had experience using a wide variety of magical powers back in your homeland and I've seen you wield the powers of your weapons aptly, what do you know of spells?

Nothing. Freya's eyes widened at the blunt, matter-of-fact statement from Kratos. Back in Greece, I fought using elemental powers, yes, but I did not actually perform spells, simply throwing those powers at my enemies. I preferred the usage of my skills in combat and the strength of my body, as well. Curses do exist in Greece, but I did not have the capability to cast them. Most of the Olympians also preferred to use the pure powers of their divinity instead of casting spells, and the only spell I experienced was the spell that branded the ashes of my first family into my skin, a permanent reminder of my sins.

Freya could not help but shake her head in dismay despite everything. To forever be unable to erase his sins of having killed his own family was just... cruel. Freya still recalled how, even now, she still felt burdened by the guilt of remembering what could have been for Baldur. I see. Forgive me, Kratos. I suppose we shall start from the basics, then, on how to focus your energies into performing spells instead of just throwing your power at enemies...

And so she began instructing Kratos in the magical arts, beginning from teaching him to understand the complexities of magic beyond simply throwing powers at enemies. ... So remember, Kratos. When you use magic without actually performing spells, like you said it, you're just throwing that power at enemies without proper refinement. However, to cast spells, you need to be in tune with your surroundings and able to draw power from them. You also have to expand your range of power as to be able to control the environment around you and potentially even warp reality itself.

Kratos had merely hummed as he stood still, taking in what she had just told him about magic and appearing deep in thought. Freya supposed she should have him work on simple offensive spells, for now, so she began by teaching him how to cast bolts of magical energy, one of the spells Freya used on Kratos during their scuffles, in which Kratos was usually able to dodge them but would be staggered and knocked back upon being struck, yet still took no actual injury. Visualize the image of your energy turning into bolts of not lightning, but pure energy. Remember the incantation, Kratos. It's ġealdor slá.

Kratos nodded as he breathed deeply, and recited the incantation... Which produced 4 small bolts of magical energy. He eyed Freya questioningly, clearly asking for her judgment, as Freya nodded approvingly. Well, for someone who didn't have much training in the magical arts, that was an adequate usage of a simple spell. Most of the Vanir who learned this spell initially could only create 2 bolts, so you're starting on the right track. The next spell I believe you should learn would be the vines I used to bind you and Odin. Remember them?

At that, Kratos grunted a little bit as Freya couldn't resist a small smirk. Since he already knew the incantation, she just had to teach him to understand the intricate parts of the spell, and he managed to raise a few constricting vines, although with noticeably greater effort than he did with the first spell. She supposed a certain amount of straightforwardness would always be in his nature.

Okay, that's enough for now. Freya turned towards Týr, who was heading towards them with Kratos's mystical gauntlet on his hand. I've finished upgrading the gauntlet for that one spell you wished to have. I believe for a beginner like Kratos, two spells would be enough for now. Now, Kratos, you've unlocked the magics of fire, lightning and wind, as well as earth when I taught you the meditational technique. It took an entire hour last time for each magic, and though the time will lessen, the focus required for such meditation meant that you would probably need at best 35 minutes.

Now this earned Freya's curiosity even as Kratos attached his gauntlet back, giving Týr a respectful nod, and sat down as he closed his eyes and began to meditate. Týr's ways and capabilities were unique and mysterious even to her, the magics he acquired from other lands not easily understandable even for her, but to think he even knew how to allow Kratos to channel magic from his homeland, despite the fact that it died when the gods there were killed, was truly amazing.

You had an easier time with lightning and wind because you were Zeus's son, so you had a natural affinity for such magics. Fire represented the burning rage that once fuelled you, which had been tempered but would never dim as you learned to focus the flame within you into better purposes, so you also meditated on it fairly easily. Earth, on the other hand, represented your absolute determination and willingness to keep going, no matter the odds, making mastering earth a natural for you. Before we continue, Kratos, may I ask what element you wish to master next?

Ice. Kratos replied without hesitation, his voice taking on a more wistful and nostalgic note in a way that Freya noticed as the same when he talked about Laufey the Just. I have had years of experience in wielding the Leviathan Axe and using it's powers over ice, and I also had some degree of familiarity with ice magic back on Greece, from my brief usage of the Ice of Poseidon and the Horn of Boreas. However, more than that, I also wish to gain true frost magic due to how it would connect me to my wife and son.

Týr merely smiled as he nodded. Very well then, Kratos. Ice it is. Remember to focus deeply on your memories of harnessing the powers and magics of ice. Ice is the element of rigidity and quietness. It does not fit your previous identity as the Ghost of Sparta due to your fiery temper and lust for vengeance, but now that you have gained calmness of mind and true wisdom, it is more within your grasp. Your consistency in seeing any endeavor you put yourself into to the end, your ability to maintain composure since arriving in these lands, focus on that aspect as you meditate, Kratos.

Týr kept offering Kratos numerous advice on ice even as Kratos continued to meditate without making a sound or any kind of movement, perfectly still. Freya had to admit it was somewhat astonishing, seeing Kratos like this after having previously seen him as a man of great action and quiet intensity, but she could sense the building power within Kratos due to her mastery of magic. It was faint, at first, and slow to refine and increase, but as 40 minutes passed, the magic within Kratos began to outwardly show, a frosty chill emerging from his body.

You're doing well, Kratos. Remember to focus more on that calmness and quietness within you, your ability to restrain your passion in favor of stoic determination. Týr encouraged as Kratos continued to say nothing, his eyes closed as ever and his body unmoving. Freya had to admit, though, that she wondered if it was more because Týr was such a good teacher or because Kratos had such great potential within him. She knew she had not seen him at his full strength and combat capacity, so she wondered just how mighty Kratos was if he were to fight without any of his restraints.

Eventually, after an hour and 20 minutes, Kratos's hands suddenly gained a frosty element to them as he stood up casually, looking at his icy-blue hands. It took longer than the elements of fire, earth, lightning and wind, Týr. I take it my previous experiences aside, my compatibility with such magics also influences the time needed to regain such powers? Týr merely smiled as he nodded. Kratos then began to perform a few ice magic techniques, spawning spikes of ice upon striking the ground, launching balls of frost power, and unleashing waves of frost energy into the ground.

With focus, he even created a small, but still formidable, tempest of icy energy, which he managed to control and move around, although with clear effort and focus. Týr nodded approvingly. Well done, Kratos. Now, I believe we should really set the amount of times you would expand your arsenal and upgrade your weapons as being not immediately after experiencing one fight after another. To test your skills and power further, how about you come back to the Halls of Preparations after two to three fights?

Kratos nodded. I see the point of it. By making me fight the phantoms of the garden with only the skillset I have now instead of expanding my arsenal constantly, it would better test my grasp of the powers I've awakened after so long and allow me to more deeply test my might, pushing myself to grow through direct experience instead of just training. Now, who should be my next opponent, I wonder?

May I suggest my niece, Thrúd? Týr proposed calmly, as Freya looked at the former God of War with some surprise. I personally believe it would help Thrúd if Freya, as the Queen of the Shield Maidens, and the other Shield Maidens were to see her close to her greatest height of skill and power and as one of them fighting you. That way, any doubts about her qualifications to be a Shield Maiden could be erased definitively. What do you think, Freya? Freya chuckled slightly at that. The daughter of Thor certainly was quite remarkable, and was a great fan of the Shield Maidens.

I suppose I would like that. If Kratos doesn't mind, of course, considering that he has his family, Atreus's potential girlfriend, and the Huldra Brothers to take on. However, Kratos shook his head and replied with something that had Freya's eyes widening. If what you hypothesize is true, then Thrúd, alongside Angrboda, has the potential to become very dear to my son. I suppose I should test out her merit next, although I have little doubts about her fierceness as a warrior. I shall wait until Mimir has finished his matters with Sigrun, and then we shall depart back into the main part of the Garden.

Atreus... With two wives? That was an image Freya couldn't see that boy in. She had to admit she was wondering exactly how something like that could be like. Although she focused much more on magic and physical combat, Freya was still a Goddess of Love, after all. Still, she focused her thoughts on judging Thrúd's worthiness to be a Shield Miaden as she and Týr went to the right side of the Hall of Preparations, Sigrun having returned with Mimir on hand and looking decidedly "lighter" and happier as she returned Mimir to Kratos and wished them both luck.

Chapter 7: The Shield Maiden of Thunder

Notes:

I am BACK!!! Sorry, it took so long, but as you can see, I've been trying to publish more regularly and with less delay. I do hope I can continue this one. I really like it! Anyway, this one's got QUITE the cliffhanger, he he...

Chapter Text

What did Sigrun speak to you about, brother? Kratos asked curiously and with respect as he and Mimir marched back into the Garden of Memorial Phantasm, leaving behind the Hall of Preparations as they stood ready to face whatever came next together. Have the two of you finally sorted out your feelings? Are you in need of any advice or counsel? If so, do not hesitate to ask. Kratos reminded his brother-in-arms firmly as they reached the Garden, Kratos's attention turning towards Thrúd's portal, the yellow rift glowing with the insignia of a Valkyrie wings, a machete, a mace, and Mjölnir.

Although she is not quite at her full potential, according to what Týr said, she would doubtlessly still be formidable. Kratos could not help but wonder if her strength, even at just the peak, but not the height, would be comparable to that of Sigrun or maybe even Gná. He and Freya never fought with the two of them having used the fullest extent of our powers, and it's clear that she would be a true challenge even for my utmost height, but he supposed he would like to see just how Thrúd would fare against him. Týr believed she and Angrboda would "share" Atreus, and such a thought was... Unique, not disturbing but interesting.

If Atreus were to choose to love the two of them, then he would support it. After all, though he was now without either Faye or Lysandra, he did not love his present wife over his past wife. Kratos was just slightly worried his son would struggle managing the needs of two women at the same time, considering the contrast between the daughter of Thor and the last Giant, which was unlike Faye and Lysandra, for while Faye was a great warrior and Lysandra was not, their love, their capacity for faith, and their willingness to stand up to him was so similar.

... Let us talk about this after we have fought Brok and Sindri, brother. However, if you are too concerned, just know that I... Think that my head has been cleared. Kratos chuckled at Mimir's sincere words as he nodded and began to step up into the steps of the staircase leading to Thrúd's portal. Say, brother, what do you think about the idea of Atreus having two women all to himself, if I may ask?

I am neutral about it. If that is what my son needs to be happy, then I would support him in seeking such a marriage. Both of those women have already proven themselves in both character and might, and they still have much left to grow. As such, I do not think they would be "martially challenged". I knew Atreus does not particularly care about beauty, so it does not matter to me either. All that matters is that Atreus is happy. If having two wives is what he needs, I shall accept and grant him my whole-hearted blessing. I have faith Faye will too.

Of course, she would. Faye had never judged him for making it clear he still loved Lysandra, never showing any signs of jealousy or anger, and even made a few casual jokes about how he seemed to have a taste for strong-hearted women. Even now, Kratos could not resist the small chuckle in his voice as he stepped through the portal.

(I hope you're watching me, Faye. I'm doing my best to become the god you had faith I could be.)

Wow, so that daughter of Thor and Sif is really going to be a Shield Maiden one day, huh? She's nothing like what I expected, honestly, and for the better. Her enthusiasm is such that I had to try VERY hard just to not immediately say to her "yes" about whether or not she would be made a Shield Maiden one day. It doesn't help that she shows some serious talent. Even I couldn't compare to her. Maybe one day, she'll make for an excellent rival for you, Lady Freya, when it comes to being Queen of the Shield Maidens. Freya merely chuckled slightly at Gunnr's words.

She's truly quite the spirit. I have only observed her from afar, and she truly has the markings to be an exemplary warrior. The blood of Thor, now harnessed for good. I have much expectations as to what she would be capable of. Speaking of which, Sigrun, how did she perform in the initial tests? Sigrun merely chuckled softly as Freya could tell how the discussion between her and Mimir had heartened her.

She passed with wonderful colors, and I believe she could deal with the next stage soon. However, let us not be hasty, shall we? We shall see how she is like when she is approaching her peak, but not quite, before we decide her true worth.

The dimension Kratos arrived in after stepping through the portal with Valkyrie wings, Mjölnir, a machete, and a mace still had the appearance of a huge arena at the center with 9 glowing Bifröst bridge-like structures connecting to it, each "bridge" having the runic symbol of the respective Nine Realms, but the sky was different. It was raining hard, thundering, and vaguely reminded him of how it was when Thor first came into his house alongside Odin, and the flash of thunder that occurred marked the moment Thrúd appeared.

As he took in her form, Kratos had to approve of her build. She had grown taller by a few inches, she wore a different form of armor compared to the other Shield Maiden, with markings that reflected the runes carved on Mjölnir and Asgard, and her wings, while mostly the the same form of organic bird wings taken by the Shield Maidens, were covered by bluish stormy colors as they flapped aggressively. Unlike Thor, she was not fat, but lean yet also muscular, the body build of a veteran warrior.

Like with the Phantom of Mimir, her expression radiated eerie calmness, and Kratos had to wonder if that was a trait that every opponent he would have to fight here carried. The idea gave him some inner conflict. Would I have to face Atreus, Faye, Deimos, or even Zeus like this?

Just as that thought came to him, Thrúd charged at him with such intense speed that Kratos's reflexes barely reacted in time to block the smashing blow of Mjölnir with the Leviathan's Axe. As the lightning of the hammer clashed with the ice of the axe, Kratos firmly holding his ground, he had to nod approvingly. She's both fast and strong, just like how her father was. Although weaker than him, this level of speed is actually even greater. With that in mind, Kratos pushed the aspiring Shield Maiden back with a focused shove of the Axe to break the lock of their weapons.

Unfazed, Thrúd quickly continued her assault, launching a series of aggressive hammer attacks that were complimented by swift and precise unarmed attacks. Even as Kratos skillfully fended off the Daughter of Thor's hammer strikes, he had to admit her fighting prowess was only similar in the surface compared to that of Thor, and in reality, there were several prominent differences.

First of all, Thrúd's usage of Mjölnir was deceitfully less aggressive than Thor, as it left enough room for her to suddenly make expert blocking moves and even feints, with Kratos falling for it three times and narrowly managing to nimbly avoid or block crushing hits. She also made more seamless usage of mixing unarmed attacks even while fighting with her hammer compared to Thor. (Is this because she wouldn't have access to the same kind of training regimen that Thor must have went through to become as powerful and feared as she was? Due to Asgard's destruction, perhaps she chose an alternative path for greatness in combat-)

Alright, brother, she's definitely not going to be able to be handled the way you deal with Thor! Watch out! Knee strike incoming. Kratos did not need Mimir to tell him as he thrust his own knee out to intercept Thrúd, knocking her back with superior strength... Only for Thrúd to manage to wrestle the Leviathan Axe from him and deliver a solid punch to his face that felt the exact same as when Baldur struck him, stronger than any blows Heimdall ever dealt out to him. Kratos, however, remained calm as he applied the wrestling technique Týr performed upon him whenever Kratos did not overpower him and threw her a few feet into the air, but not before grappling her arm and disarming her of Mjölnir.

Unfazed, and not bothering to draw out the machete and mace she once wielded, the girl who might well become his daughter-in-law in the future charged bare-handed. As Kratos parried her moves and countered her techniques, he had to compliment her for the unorthodox form. (Indeed, as she no longer had access to the resources of Asgard due to now living on Vanaheim alongside the other Aesir, she probably focused just as much on building up her muscles than she was on increasing her quickness of action, as to make up for what she might be lacking in terms of strength compared to her father with speed and agility.)

Her punches and kicks were sharp, and she made regular usage of her elbows and knees for strikes, a tendency that he had not see in Thor. He even suffered 3 of those blows and even as he countered back, he found that her defenses were sharp enough that he had to put in proper technique to overcome them and land retaliating hits as they exchanged unarmed attacks and jumped or dodged each other's attacks.

(One of her special tactics, I take it, was to repeatedly use body strikes before aiming at vital spots such as the head, the lungs, or the heart. It's almost ironic, that it's an old, constant instinct of mine refined into a strategy. Repeated body shots are punishing even for the strongest of warriors, and this was the exact same strategy that once "chopped" Zeus down until his death, as I aimed at random parts of his body before striking at spots that would be too fatal even for a god as powerful as him. In comparison to Thor's usage of brutish, yet precise, disciplined punches, she's more unpredictable... But I happen to be familiar with this course of tactic)

With a small, grim smile to himself, Kratos anticipated one of Thrúd's body shots as to block it before landing an elbow to her head and also nimbly jumping up before executing a round kick to the back of her head. However, much to his further respect for the Daughter of Thor and future rising star amongst the Shield Maidens, Thrúd did not retaliate violently but instead calmly, and carefully, maneuvered to dodge Kratos's subsequent punch aimed at her heart and, leaping off the surface of the arena, landed a solid kick on his chest that knocked him back and even made him spit a few blood.

As they both reclaimed their weapons, Thrúd switched into her machete and mace while Kratos unveiled the Blade of Olympus. The single divine blade matched the twin weapons of his future daughter-in-law, as Kratos found her techniques to be once more praise-worthy. She truly had mastered dual-wielding both weapons, making use of false rhythms and sudden weapon swaps as though it was as natural as breathing, her irregular footwork ranging from zigzags, short lunges, and pivots that even he found hard to read, her stances low-spring loaded and focusing on lateral movement as she relied on rotational footwork to constantly reposition, keeping the mace as the outer striking arc and the machete inside.

Jump-steps, shuffles, and controlled lunges aided her in maintaining the unpredictable pressure, all while she masterfully leveraged the versatility of the machete and the raw impact of the mace to be unpredictable. The machete was used to execute highly fast slashes, disarming cuts that would have instantly finished any lesser warrior, as well as defensive flicks and parries that made it difficult for him to press her back, forcing him to rely on careful pacing. On top of that, the mace employed devastating attacks that even he found difficult to block with the Blade of Olympus, while more than twice he was almost struck by bone-breaking finishers.

Circle movements allowed centrifugal momentum which enabled natural rotation from one weapon to another, cutting combos transitioning into bludgeoning finishers, while the machete was used to intercept and the mace for hard deflections. At few points, she even executed cross-guard blocks by combining the machete and mace into a strong 'X' guard whenever he gained the upper hand, which he found he could not penetrate as she moved swiftly. All the while, every parry was quickly returned with brutal counters.

Although Kratos was gaining the edge, he had to admit her technique was devastating. The psychological nature of the fighting style was also masterful in it's surprise execution, and would have confused most opponents. Truly, from how she made use of the machete's finesse to lure enemies into thinking her as being just agile and fast before the mace delivered a crushing surprise, how she showed openings on purpose and used the slower, more powerful mace to punish any rushes, she was worthy to be a Shield Maiden.

And in terms of being his future daughter-in-law, Kratos had no questions that she was worthy.

Her movements carry the grace that Thor lacked despite his brutal efficiency. Smart fighting, a hybridized approach of combat that mixed various styles and forms, and a clearly refined pre-fight psychology. She embodies the best mixtures of Aesir fighting styles and Shield Maiden training. Truly magnificent. Eir commented softly as she looked at the performance of the future Shield Maiden. Gunnr was outright clapping out of clear admiration and joy.

Thor was exceptionally skilled, but, due to Odin's conditioning, he always preferred a more straightforward approach to fighting from centuries of instinct and brutal training. However, it seems that Thrúd inherited the best from her parents, not just Thor but also Sif, and took those tactics to higher levels upon receiving the training of a Shield Maiden. I might not have gotten to interact with her yet, but I must say I am quite impressed with my niece. Perhaps, after this, I should give her some training. Týr stated with a small smile to his face as Freya merely chuckled.

The sharpness of her moves, the balanced mixture of overwhelming power and quick movements, the emphasis on controlling the fight with not just might but caution and precision, the instincts and training to make few mistakes, and versatility in both direct methods of fighting as well as more technical aspects, even though she has yet to truly reach her full potential, she definitely comes close to Thor. I have no complaints, it seems. She has the makings of an excellent Shield Maiden, and we are in need of as many as possible, with none of the candidates being nearly as talented as she herself was. Freya acknowledged as her heart felt hopeful for the future at the sight.

She certainly cannot be handled in the exact same way as Thor himself would. It seemed that the General is also taking this seriously. He's blending in styles and keeping a sharp eye for detail, a sign that he sees her as a formidable opponent. Although, I dare say, Lord Týr, Kratos is yet to fight with all that he has, I take it? Sigrun commented wisely as Freya and the other Shield Maidens eyed her with some surprise.

Týr merely nodded. Wise of you to point it out, Sigrun. Indeed, I believe Kratos has yet to go "all-out", since his days on Greece. Perhaps it is because of subconscious instincts as to avoid becoming the same monster he once did? Perhaps it is because he has matured and saw the need to measure things up while going level per level up a notch rather than immediately unleashing his full fury, relying much less on raw power and more on proficiency? Either way, he's still growing stronger. A fighter of boundless potential, he is. While he might one day reach the point where he could go no further, that day... Seems to be very far still.

(Indeed, Kratos, despite already being at the pinnacle of strength amongst godhood, you still continue to improve yourself. It's not that Valhalla can allow for limitless growth, but it's just that YOU possess nigh-limitless potential. I am looking forward to helping you reach it, my friend.)

As Kratos finally kicked his future daughter-in-law after taking a decisive edge on her in their melee contest, Thrúd began to glow with lightning as Kratos took a preparatory stance. (Is she finally using magic now? The Valkyries and Shield Maidens I have fought before have all demonstrated certain magical capabilities, and if she is to be married to Atreus, then-)

Before he could finish that thought, Thrúd suddenly unleashed several lightning bolts that were not the same blue as the ones used by Thor and her brothers, but rather carrying the purple hues of a Bifröst, despite being clearly lightning-elemental. Kratos immediately created a barrier of ice to protect himself, but to his approval, those bolts quickly cracked at his barrier before the last one destroyed it and he was forced to dodge with his sharp reflexes. However, Thrúd was not idle, and Kratos was caught by a powerful earthquake that knocked him on the ground.

Although the extraordinary durability and resilience that had enabled him to survive many dangerous odds before allowed him to quickly recover, Thrúd's next onslaught was that of lightning-like roses bursting out of the ground, with Kratos not being confident in his ability to engage her magically and jumping high. As Kratos prepared to land down, suddenly he noticed something strange, which was the fact that he wasn't being pulled down by gravity despite not resisting it. Oh brother, look at your back! At Mimir's awe-stricken voice, Kratos turned around and what he saw confounded him.

Gold-blue wings had emerged from his shoulder, seemingly formed out of pure divine power, the blue hues reminding him of the Power of Hope that Týr stated would be the reason behind his current ability to wield magic. (This is- It vaguely resembles Icarus's wings, but much brighter, not physical, and more-) Well, those wings definitely would give a Shield Maiden's a good run for their money- WATCH OUT! At Mimir's sudden shout, Kratos turned around as Thrúd flew up to him, with Kratos nimbly avoiding her hammer uppercut as he tested the wings maneuverability.

As Thrúd fired blades of wind, Kratos soon found that his wings could move at speeds and with agility that rivaled his own speed on land. He had some experience in flight combat thanks to his time using the Wings of Icarus, and it seemed like the wings he manifested were much more maneuverable. He avoided the projectiles Thrúd threw at him with precise movements, fortunately able to avoid clumsiness even as he felt himself strain, and, in testing out the wings more, and began to fire his own magics, releasing massive waves of fire as well as launching flame swords that Thrúd was forced to protect herself from with barriers of wind.

Well, that's some sharp fire magic right there, brother! Guess Fire's your strongest element right now! Mimir complimented as Kratos and Thrúd continued to engage in an aerial fire-fight, launching and deflecting magic from one another as Kratos conjured barriers of rainbow-like fire. (The colors of rainbow always comes forth whenever I use my magic now... Is it because even elemental magics have been infused by the power of Hope?)

Soon, however, Kratos was forced to realize that he could not best Thrúd magically, as Thrúd began to seamlessly launch combinations of lightning and wind in the form of lightning bolts that could shatter his frost shields in one hit and almost struck him had he not discovered that the wings seemingly manifested by the Power of Hope could fold together and create a barrier that not only blocked, but reflected attacks. Not only that, Thrúd wielded Bifröst energy with raw force as she created hammers of Bifröst that Kratos did not feel assured that he could block.

Well, looks like one of Sif's children definitely inherited her control over plants! One of the reasons why she was so frustrated with Magni and Modi back then was because they didn't inherit her powers, only Thor's! Huh, well good for her! Hopefully, a bright future awaits her! Mimir commented as Kratos destroyed huge floras of electricity with a slash from the Blade of Olympus and thrust the Blade. Perhaps your future granddaughter would be more than just a warrior, even if they came from her!

Kratos smiled at the prospect even as he remained focused. The future Shield Maiden had began to launch fiery rocks at him, which Kratos shot down with his arrows, precisely hitting all the rocks. He launched Bifröst arrows in rapid succession to neutralize the hammers she threw at him, noting that it took dozens of those arrows to destroy just one.

Fortunately, Kratos was an exceptional marksman, who had once used Typhon's Bane and the Bow of Apollo as weapons back on Greece, both which required immense mastery over archery, and he had refined his accuracy in throwing with the Leviathan Axe and Draupnir Spears despite having never held a bow for years aside from teaching Atreus how to improve, until now. As such, he was able to launch arrows quickly and at fast-pace enough to destroy the hammers, although one almost hit him, and it also helped that the bow was enhanced to never run out of arrows.

However, soon enough, Thrúd began to glow with a multi-colored aura as Kratos's instincts recognized it as a truly deadly move. As Thrúd telekinetically controlled Mjölnir and her machete as well as mace, infusing them with electricity, earth, and Bifröst respectively, Kratos braced himself. Oh, lad, it feels like this is a super technique, just like how when my potential future capabilities turned the entire arena flowing with mystical energy. Something big is coming!

Almost immediately as he said that, 3 copies of Thrúd's weapons all lashed out, Kratos shooting charged arrows at them as he recognized normal arrows would not do the job. However, the copies were clearly strong enough as one of them withstood 5 Sonic Arrows and another withstood 3 Bifröst arrows. Only able to destroy 3 of them, he was forced to doge the remaining six.

Zig-zagging, highly erratic patterns of lightning bolts, waves of Bifröst energy and wind slashes attacked him, with Kratos barely avoiding some of them and Mimir even screaming out as he was almost struck, all while magnificent flora burst out from the ground, preventing him from landing. And then, Thrúd came to him, spinning with all three weapons as Kratos barely blocked the ferocity and speed of her Mjölnir, machete as well as mace. However, he saw that the pattern of spinning was not actually as deadly as it could have been, perhaps due to how she was clearly going berserk.

As he parried her spinning attacks and managed to just avoid being caught by the overwhelming volumes of magical attacks coming at his way, he slowly gathered his divine power and reached deeper into himself, the Blade of Olympus glowing as it's colors changed from blue to a dazzling rainbow. The moment Thrúd prepared to slam down, clearly about to finish this ultimate attack of hers, Kratos didn't hesitate. With the sharpened instincts of a great warrior, he lunged forward and clashed the Blade of Olympus with her three weapons.

The rainbow shine of the Blade of Olympus alone not only matched the multi-elemental glow of all three weapons, and Kratos put all his might as well as focus as he began to push Thrúd back bit by bit until eventually, he rushed forward and slashed through Thrúd's attack, returning the arena to normal instantly. However, what surprised Kratos wasn't the fact that he managed to repel her attack.

No, it was the sight of Mjölnir being destroyed along with the machete and mace, the phantom of Thrúd's body cut in half as light exploded and Kratos was knocked into the ground by the explosion.

So, he's already began to instinctually learn to use the Power of Hope. To think he could shatter Mjölnir, with two other weapons at that... Although the Blade of Olympus was known to be the greatest weapon in all of Greece, it could not have shattered all three weapons at the same time. No, this was only possible because Hope infused into Kratos's sword power. It's magnificent... Týr said as he regarded the sight before him in true awe.

Back then, when he fought both Thor and Odin, he knew he did not possess the power to destroy either Mjölnir or Gungnir. He was able to hold his own against the two of them with his skill and the power he acquired from his travels, but even someone as peerless as him could not hold back two top-tier gods at once. And yet now, Kratos did this in a flash.

I'm utterly speechless, my lady. Boss. This- This is too crazy, even for me. First, she pulled out that fearsome berserk mode, and then General just smashed through three weapons at once with a single blade, while those 3 weapons were spinning at him!? Gunnr regarded as she looked between Kratos and the remnants of Thrúd's phantom condensing into a glowing shield.

This is miraculous, indeed. Freya, can I ask you to call in Lúnda the Dwarf? It seemed like we might need the insights of a Dwarf, one with skills and capabilities on par with the Huldra Brothers.
