MekaMechanic Week 2024 Day 3 (Beaches Back Home)

Summary:

DVa gets time off from Overwatch duties and takes Brigitte with her back to Busan.

Work Text:

Brigitte found herself in a very familiar position: in the vehicle bay, fixing Tokki once again. With her screwdriver held in her mouth while she checked on the wiring, she is having some trouble making herself heard over the music playing from Hana’s laptop on the nearby tool cabinet.

“TRY IT AGAIN.” She shouts up to Hana in the cockpit. Instead of moving properly, the leg she’s working on shocks her again. “Fyfan!” She curses. “Still not working right.”

Hana slips out of the cockpit with practiced ease, sliding down Tokki’s leg to crouch next to Brigitte. “You know, when Dae-Hyun had trouble with this joint he used to just hit it. Didn’t fix anything but it made him feel better.” She flashes a winning smile, and Brigitte can’t suppress a giggle. “But, if that’s not your speed, it might be an issue with the signal, not the power.”

“Of course! If the signal isn’t coming in right then the computer doesn’t know what to do with the charge so it’s just releasing it. Can you hold this please?” She hands Hana the tool she was using to check the wiring before closing up the panel and opening the one that housed the computer that receives commands from the controls. The problem is immediately obvious to her, as several of the wires leading into it have been knocked loose or cut. “Got it! Try it again!”

Hana tosses the tool onto a nearby cabinet and clambers back into the cockpit. The leg works perfectly. “Hey, nice work!” Hana powers down Tokki before sliding back to the floor and walking over to the minifridge in the corner of the room. She took two Nano-Cola out of it, tossing one to Brigitte. “So, I’ve got some leave time coming up and I was wondering if you would want to tag along. Probably going to head back to Busan for the week, spend a bit of time with the rest of the squad and maybe hit up the beaches. You interested?”

Brigitte catches the Nano-Cola, and takes a sip to cover her awkwardness at the request. “I-I don’t know Hana, I wouldn’t wanna get in the way of your fun.”

Hana rolls her eyes. “Oh come on, you literally couldn’t if you tried. Besides, I’m sure Dae-Hyun would be super interested in talking to Tokki’s new mechanic.”

“Mmmmmalright, I’ll go with.” Hana smiles, and the two tap their soda cans together.

Brigitte had been worried for the whole fifteen hour flight from Gibraltar to Busan, in fact she had barely gotten any sleep, but the entire M.E.K.A. team had been really welcoming. For now though she was relaxing in the mess with Dae-Hyun.

The two had been sitting in silence for a few moments before Dae-Hyun said “She’s really into you you know?”

Brigitte’s head shoots up, nearly gagging on her snack. “Say what?”

“Hana. I think she sees you as me but… a woman, so you know, her speed.”

“How do you know?”

“She… told me you were dating, just going a bit slow?” Dae-Hyun tilts his head. “Did you not… know? Why did you think she invited you here?”

“I thought it was because we were really good friends…” Brigitte mumbles. She feels incredibly foolish. How could she not have noticed? All those gentle touches, the comforting words after hard missions, the fact Hana always made it a point to be around her. “I…” Brigitte shakes her head and changes tack “we’re going to the beach tomorrow, then to dinner. Can you help me, as her childhood friend, pick out an outfit for dinner?”

“Sure, but first” Dae-Hyun narrowed his eyes “which beach?”

“Songdo is what she said? Why?”

Dae-Hyun laughs. “Damn, she’s not even taking you to one of the tourist beaches. Sure, I’ll help you pick something out.”

Brigitte was perfectly comfortable sitting on the beach and sunbathing but now she finds Hana dragging her to go kitesurfing despite her protests.

“Come on! You’re so brave in battle, don’t tell me you’re scared of kitesurfing!”

“I’m not scared I’m just… just okay with relaxing!”

“You are scared! I can tell!”

“Okay, maybe I am a little nervous but that’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

“No, but you’ll have a great time doing it. And besides,” she nudges Brigitte playfully “you’ll have a great teacher.”

“Alright, fine.” Brigitte ruffles Hana’s hair. “But only because you asked so nicely.”

“YES! Thanks Brigitte. Honestly, this is one of my favorite things to do when I get time off in Busan.”

“Well, I’m happy to share it with you then.”

Brigitte’s muscles were sore. As fun as kitesurfing with Hana had been, it was a lot more effort than she was expecting. Now, finally, Brigitte is able to relax in the sun. Sure, she could do this at Gibraltar but it was always interrupted by Rein breaking something or Angela needing a hand or something going wrong with the dropship. Lost in thought, she didn’t notice that Hana had just come back with ice cream until she cuddled up right next to her in the sunchair.

“I got you strawberry, your favorite.” She holds the cone out to Brigitte.

Brigitte takes the cone, and pauses for a moment. “You know Hana… how do you feel about labels?”

“Hm? What do you mean?”

“Well… we’ve been together for a while now. How would you feel if I called you my girlfriend.”

Hana takes a moment to think and Brigitte can feel the panic rising in her chest. “You know…” Hana finally says “I think I would like that quite a lot.” Hana kisses Brigitte’s cheek and Brigitte can immediately feel the blush rising. “You’re so pretty when you blush.”

The pair cuddle in silence for a few moments, and Brigitte finds herself struck by how nice it felt to have Hana’s head on her shoulder. She starts playing with Hana’s hair, gently running her fingers through it, just basking in the warmth of the sun and of Hana next to her.

“Wow.” Is the first thing Brigitte hears when Hana arrives at the restaurant. The pair had gotten ready after the beach separately, and so this was the first time Hana had seen the outfit Brigitte had picked. With Dae-Hyun’s assistance of course. It was a light pink split skirt with subtle flower embroidery over long light gray socks and cream flats, with a rich purple blouse that had gold accents, and topped off by a deep blue jacket with silver detailing.

Brigitte reaches out and takes both of Hana’s hands in hers. Hana was wearing a dark blue suit, almost matching Brigitte’s jacket but a shade or two darker, with purple wedges. The suit jacket was left open to reveal a pale pink blouse with very faint stylized cogs and gears. “I could say the same thing. Did you pick that top for me?”

“Yeah, a bit. Shall we? This was my favorite place before Cassidy picked me up.”

“Lead the way.”

Despite the restaurant being packed, the pair are led right to a table. Hana gives Brigitte a knowing wink. “Being famous has some perks.”

The menu is in Korean. Brigitte realizes she probably should’ve expected this, but she finds herself wholly unprepared to read it. She clears her throat softly. “Uh, Hana? I… can’t read the menu…”

“Don’t worry, I planned for this. Trust me, you’ll love it.”

Brigitte folds the menu closed and smiles. “I’ll always trust you.”

The pair pass the time waiting for the food to come out swapping stories about their times before they joined Overwatch, trading tales of pro gaming and M.E.K.A for growing up close to the original Overwatch and working with the Crusaders. When the food does arrive, Brigitte has never been more glad for anything in this world or any other than that she trusted Hana’s instincts on what to order for her.

In between mouthfuls of some of the best food she’s ever had, Brigitte manages “I can see why this place is your favorite.”

“I know, it’s amazing isn’t it?”

Resting a hand on top of Hana’s, Brigitte smiles. “It’s the second most amazing thing at this table.”

It’s late by the time the pair get back to the hotel. Once inside, Brigitte finds herself hesitating. Would Hana mind if they shared a bed? On one hand, Brigitte finds herself struggling with the idea of not being close to her, but she doesn’t want to make Hana uncomfortable. On the other hand-

Her train of thought is interrupted as, as if reading her mind, Hana pulls Brigitte into bed with her. The pair share a lingering kiss before they curl up to sleep together.
