Chapter 1: Jaheira the wise
Summary:
Jaheira is the first to discover Tav’s development.
Chapter Text
Tav waited until midnight, when everyone else (including Astarion) was asleep, before she slowly made her way to Jaheira’s room within the Elfsong Tavern.
Jaheira was curious when she found Tav searching through her room at midnight, clearly looking for something.
"Maybe if you tell me what you're searching for, perhaps I can help you." Jaheira cleared her throat.
"Gods, Jaheira!" Tav stood still, letting out a deep exhale.
"What are you looking for, Tav? If you're looking for something of mine, maybe I can help you." Jaheira offered.
"3 weeks ago, I started feeling ill. I assumed that it was a simple cold, or maybe a stomach bug. But the nausea hasn't gone away and I've vomited more times in the past 3 weeks than have in all my years of life." Tav told.
"You said 3 weeks ago? Does your chest hurt?" Jaheira gestured.
"Yes." Tav nodded.
"Wasn't it 3 weeks ago that you and Halsin began your polyamorous relationship? I mean, it's not like a vampire spawn can procreate." Jaheira suggested.
"I did consider it, but it's not like I can accurately confirm it." Tav reminded Jaheira.
"Your chest is sore. You're tired. You've been nauseous and have vomited for weeks. You sleeping with Halsin lines up with everything you've experienced. I could use my Druidic abilities to confirm what we surely know by now, if it would make you feel better?" Jaheira suggested.
"Don't waste your time, Jaheira. You said it yourself. My being pregnant is pretty obvious." Tav exhaled.
"You're going to tell them right? I mean, Halsin is the father of your unborn child and Astarion is your other partner." Jaheira questioned.
"I'm...not sure." Tav shook her head.
"You're not sure?" Jaheira furrowed her eyebrows.
"We still have two Netherstones to get before we face off against the Elder Brain. There is no guarantee that any of us make it out alive, either against Orin and Gortash, or against the Elder Brain." Tav explained.
"That's even more reason to tell them, hell, even the whole team." Jaheira told.
"Why?" Tav asked, confused.
"Of course, it is not my decision whether or not you tell Astarion, Halsin and the group, but I highly suggest you do. You have a camp full of friends who will do anything to help you…and your baby." Jaheira made a good point.
"I- I’ll tell Astarion and Halsin in the morning." Tav confirmed, leaving Jaheira’s room. She returned to her room, slipping back into bed.
Staring up at the ceiling, Tav replayed her conversation with Jaheira in her mind. She had once suspected that she might've been pregnant, maybe a week or two ago, but with a basic confirmation, Tav couldn't help but reminisce.
3 weeks prior marked Tav's first night in Rivington. The night prior ended with a Githyanki attack and the reveal that her 'Dream Guardian' was actually a Mind flayer named The Emperor. 2 nights and a morning later, Tav and her friends prepared to first meet Gortash before entering Baldur's Gate through the Lower City.
She'd never forget her first night in Rivington. Hours prior, Halsin revealed to Tav that he had strong feelings toward her. Even though she couldn't deny she had feelings for him, she was concerned about her relationship with Astarion. Astarion assured her that he had no issue with her pursuing a sexual relationship with Halsin, insisting that she help Halsin 'enjoy the freedom of nature's gifts'. That night, she and Halsin began their semi-romantic relationship that did include Astarion (once he felt comfortable).
Tav knew that Jaheira made a good point. The group knowing about her pregnancy would mean precautions could be taken to ensure the safety of not only Tav, but her baby. She also knew that the team needed some good news and another reason to defeat the Elder Brain and the Absolute.
But she also worried. There was a real chance that she and the group wouldn't be able to defeat the Absolute. It would be 4 adventurers versus a whole army of Mind flayers, goblins, winged horrors and other soldiers fighting against them. Tav didn't think it was necessary to tell Halsin and Astarion or even the whole group that she was pregnant, if only days later she and the rest of her friends perished in a battle that was heavily stacked against them.
Regardless of the pros and cons surrounding the thought of revealing her pregnancy, Tav knew that she and the group had other things to worry themselves with, like saving Lae'zel from Orin, killing Orin to retrieve her Netherstone and killing Gortash to retrieve his Netherstone. Not to mention the huge battle against the Elder Brain that seemed like an impossible task. Sure, there were certainly many allies who swore to help Tav and her friends fight against the Absolute, but she was still worried.
Tav was going to tell Halsin first, considering there was absolutely no doubt he was the father. Astarion would be told next, as he was part of the trio. He loved Halsin as much as he loved Tav. As for the others, she wasn’t sure. If - by some miracle - they all survived the battle against the Elder Brain, Tav would tell them.
Chapter 2: The chosen of Bhaal
Summary:
Tav and her companions retrieve the second of 3 Netherstones.
Notes:
Some Astarion fluff.
Chapter Text
With each passing moment that Gortash and Orin remained alive, the Elder Brain grew more unstable. That was apparent the moment the earthquakes became stronger.
Tav and her friends awoke to another earthquake, this one worse than before. She got up and dressed, taking a moment to stare at herself in the mirror near her bed. Even though there wasn't any visible proof, Tav exhaled, knowing that inside her, a baby would slowly grow, day by day.
Making her way to the lounge area that separated all of the rooms, Tav gave Scratch and Cub (the owlbear cub) some love before being greeted by her other companions. Seeing Halsin and Astarion reminded her of what she needed to tell them, but another earthquake quickly changed her mind.
"The earthquakes are worsening. The sooner we get the other Netherstones, the better." Karlach insisted.
"Karlach is right. But before we do anything, I think we need a reminder that we will be okay. Orin and Gortash seem like difficult enemies to take down, but we've dealt with worse." Wyll told.
"Yeah, like saving Duke Ravengard, Omeluum and the prisoners from the Iron Throne. Killing Cazador and his allies. Killing Viconia DeVir and her ridiculously large group of followers..." Astarion listed off a few of the group's most recent adventures since arriving in the city.
"Don't forget that we travelled to the House of Hope, within Avernus, to retrieve the Orphic Hammer. In doing so, we saved Hope, Yurgir, and killed Raphael himself. If we can kill a devil who is above all other devils, Orin and Gortash will be easy!" Gale smiled.
"Speaking of Orin and Gortash, who are we killing first?" Shadowheart asked.
"We're killing Orin first. We cannot let her kill Lae'zel. Last night, among other things, I thought of how we are going to kill her." Tav spoke up.
"Let us hear this plan of yours." Astarion smiled.
"Okay. As we've established, some tasks require different skills. For this one, I'll need Gale, Wyll and Karlach." Tav started, then going on to explain the plan.
———
The only part of the plan that Gale, Wyll and Karlach didn't know about was how to get into Bhaal's temple. In fact, none of them knew that Tav carried a bag full of hands that she'd use to win over the Murder Tribunal. Gale, Wyll and Karlach were told to stand outside Canduhallow's Tombstones, so none of them would be disappointed by her actions.
Once Tav had the necessary tools to access the Temple of Bhaal, she, Gale, Wyll and Karlach made their way to the entry, taking a moment to prepare.
"You three remember what we need to do?" Tav turned to her friends, watching as they all nodded.
Tav placed the Amulet of Bhaal against the entry. The doors opened, allowing for the 4 of them to enter. Tav led the group through the temple, being careful not to start any combat until they were ready. Stopping halfway down the stairs, the group became angry, seeing Lae'zel unconscious. Having not yet earned Orin's attention, Tav turned to her friends.
"You ready Gale?" Tav smiled, trying to stay positive. She felt sick. Her nausea was starting to worsen.
"Ready." Gale confirmed.
Tav reached into her bag, grabbing a scroll of Invisibility. She knew that Gale already had Invisibility as one of his equipped spells, but she needed him to save his magic.
Having been turned invisible, Gale separated himself from the group and hastily moved toward Orin and the other Bhaal followers. Getting as close to Orin as possible, Gale got his spell ready.
Please work! Please work! Please work! Gale thought to himself.
Casting the spell, he aimed it at Orin and then aimed at the chasm only a few feet from them both. Before he could doubt himself, he used Telekinesis to throw Orin into the chasm below and much to relief of Tav, Gale, Wyll and Karlach, she was gone. Immediately being thrown into battle, Wyll and Gale focused on using their hard-hitting spells, like Cloud of Daggers and Wall of Fire, while Karlach raged to make her attacks deal more damage.
Tav used her expert skills with a bow and arrow to stay on the staircase, dealing lots of damage to the enemies who had been hit by Gale or Wyll's spells. At least she didn't feel guilty about endangering herself or her baby by getting right in the middle of the combat. After 25 minutes, all of Orin's allies were dead. Wyll and Karlach focused on getting Lae'zel to safety, while Gale and Tav moved to the edge of the platform.
Finding a scroll of Telekinesis at the bottom of her bag, Tav used it to try and get Orin's body out of the chasm. With of her strength, Orin's body was lowered onto the floor behind them. Gale looted her body, while Tav retrieved the Netherstone.
"Let's get out of here. This place is fucking creepy." Karlach insisted.
———
"Success?" Halsin asked as Tav, Gale, Wyll and Karlach returned with Lae'zel following behind.
"Success!" Tav smiled, holding up Orin's Netherstone.
"Thank the Gods!" Astarion cheered.
"We'll face Gortash tomorrow." Tav told before walking off to her room.
Laying down on her bed, Tav rested her hands on her abdomen. She let out a deep exhale and stared up at the ceiling like she had done the night before. Hearing a knock, Tav sat up.
"Come in." Jaheira entered, a stern look on her face.
"What you did was stupid, you know?" Jaheira told.
"I didn't get right in the middle of battle. I stayed on the sidelines, using my bow and arrow to fight." Tav tried to reassure Jaheira, but she still looked pissed.
"You didn't tell Halsin, or Astarion." Jaheira mentioned.
"I was going to, I promise. But, we were hit with another earthquake." Tav defended herself.
"You had plenty of time between the first earthquake and leaving to defeat Orin." Jaheira insisted.
"I will tell them, before we go off to face the Elder Brain." Tav nodded.
"Good. I would like to see Halsin and Astarion smile before we face the biggest threat Faerûnhas ever seen." Jaheira smiled, leaving Tav alone.
Tav heard another knock on her door and called out, waiting for the door to open. When it did, she was happy to see one of her two lovers enter.
"You still sad that I didn't pick you to help me take down Orin?" Tav smirked, watching as Astarion walked over to her.
"Of course I am. I always get sad when I don't get to go on killing missions with you. Developing feelings for someone, like I have for you, does that." Astarion told, nodding. He sat down next to Tav, his gaze flickering between her neck and her eyes.
"You can feed on me, if you'd like?" Tav offered her neck, a huge grin appearing on his face.
"Apology accepted." He smiled. As always, he got close to Tav's neck, putting his nose against her skin. But, unlike other times, he quickly pulled his face away from her neck as soon as he finished taking a whiff of her pulsing veins.
"Do I smell bad? I do admit I haven't had a bath in a day or two." Tav worried, smelling herself.
"You smell perfectly fine, my darling. It's just...your blood." Astarion tried to explain.
"My blood? What about it?" Tav asked before she shut her mouth.
"I've tasted your blood, many times before, but now? Just by a brief smell, I can ascertain that your blood volume has increased, significantly." He leaned back.
"Congratulations, mummy." He smiled.
"How could you tell just by a single smell of my blood?" Tav asked, curious.
"I'm a vampire spawn, my sweet. Blood is my specialty. Of course, I have dealt with some...pregnant women in my 200 years of slavery for Cazador." Astarion watched as Tav's eyes widened.
"I never did anything to them. I seduced them and lured them to Cazador's palace. Cazador was never kind enough to spare some blood - human, elf, or otherwise. And even if I had snuck a little nibble, their pregnancies were early on, they were never showing." Astarion clarified.
"How do you feel about this?" Tav asked, curious.
"How do I feel about this? I'm not involved, at least, not biologically. Speaking of biology, does Halsin know he's gonna be a daddy?" Astarion questioned.
"Not yet. I planned to tell you both soon, before we went up against the Elder Brain at least." Tav shrugged her shoulders.
"As for feelings, yours are valid in this discussion, Astarion. You may not be the biological father of this baby, but you're going to be involved in the baby's life...if you want to be, of course." Tav smiled, holding Astarion's hand.
"You'd want me, a vampire spawn who isn't a fan of children, to be a part of a future baby's life as one of its parents?" Astarion looked confused.
"The old you - when we met at the ravaged beach - might not have been a fan of children, but you have changed. For example; Arabella and Yenna. You didn't want either of them to join our camp, but Arabella held her own and Yenna makes good food that you always eat two bowls of." Tav insisted.
"As for being a parent to the baby, I'd like that. I'm sure Halsin wouldn't have an issue with it. There are all sorts of families that exist in the world. Halsin loves you. I love you. I can certainly say that you love us. I think the baby would be lucky to have you as a second dad." Tav pulled Astarion close, resting her head on his shoulder.
"I'm not entirely sure how I feel about that idea. Can I think about it?" Astarion asked.
"To be honest, I'm not sure we're gonna make it past defeating the Absolute. If we do live on to the end of the week, you'll have the rest of my pregnancy to decide." Tav nodded.
"Don't be so negative, my dear Tav! But, I can say that I am very happy for you and Halsin. You'll both make great parents. This future child of yours also goes to show that Halsin really did 'enjoy the freedom of nature's gifts'." Astarion laughed, mocking Halsin once again like he had done earlier in their travels.
"It's hard to be positive. My chest hurts, I feel nauseous and I puke at all hours of the day. We still have Gortash to deal with before going up against the Elder Brain and even then, going up against the Elder Brain is most likely going to kill all of us." Tav admitted.
"And I thought the same way about Cazador. But you convinced me that killing him was doable. You were right. I watched as you, Shadowheart and Gale made him weak before ending the sad lives of his allies before you allowed me to finish him once and for all. You even convinced me not to go through with ascention because you knew I'd end up like Cazador and...you're right, I would have. If you can help me overcome my demon, I think you can overcome yours and live to tell the tale to your future child." Astarion reassured her.
"Thanks, Astarion. But for now, we need to focus on defeating Gortash." Tav reminded both herself and Astarion, who nodded.
Chapter 3: The chosen of Bane
Summary:
The third and final Netherstone is retrieved.
Chapter Text
Tav had to admit that planning Orin's defeat was easier than Gortash's. For one, Orin and all of her allies were in one place. Tav had no doubts that Gortash would have guards all over Wyrm's Rock Fortress, especially now that the Steel Watch Foundry was blown to pieces, rendering all Steel Watchers throughout Baldur's Gate decommissioned.
While the rest of the group was asleep, Tav was once again wide awake, unable to sleep. With the worries over how to effectively infiltrate the fortress and the horrible nausea from the pregnancy, Tav instead focused on fool-proofing her plan. By sunrise, Tav was still awake, sorting through her bag to determine what weapons and spells she'd need for the day ahead.
Hearing a knock on her door, Tav allowed entry to whoever stood on the other side. She was curious to see Ulder Ravengard entering her room.
"Duke Ravengard. Is everything okay?" Tav turned to face the Duke, who nodded.
Tav soon realised that question didn't have a simple answer. 5 minutes later, Tav was aware of a wyrm, sleeping underneath the fortress. Duke Ravengard gave her a book: 'The Legend of Ansur'. Inside was text, detailing a legend of a secret guardian. Notes inside written by Duke Ravengard gave clues as to where one would find Ansur.
"It is no legend. Ansur does sleep beneath the rock, and will come to the city's aid when it is in need. He is oath bound to do so." Duke Ravengard insisted after Tav asked him a few questions.
With a new task added to the small list in Tav's mind, Duke Ravengard left her to finish preparing herself. Before long, she was in the main area, surrounded by her companions.
"Today, we take down Gortash. For that task, Karlach will be coming. I have a feeling that Gortash won't go down without one hell of a fight, so I will need Gale and his hard-hitting spells." Tav told, earning smiles from Karlach and Gale.
"Duke Ravengard alerted me earlier to a possible ally who would be a crucial addition to our fight against the Elder Brain. According to him, the location of said ally is actually underneath Wyrm's Rock Fortress, so we can kill two birds with one stone. Wyll will be needed, but I also ask that Shadowheart be on stand-by." Tav smiled at Shadowheart.
"Be careful, my darling. We don't need you or your baby getting hurt now. Not when we're so close to the end." Astarion whispered to Tav as Karlach, Gale, Wyll and Shadowheart prepared themselves.
"Bring explosives. Lots of explosives." Tav called out to Karlach, who responded with a wicked grin on her face.
"Fuck yes!" Karlach cheered.
With a final nod, Karlach, Gale and Wyll made their way to Wyrm's Rock, not totally surprised that the drawbridge was now up and unaccessible. Using a few scrolls, the four travellers made their way around the fortress, making sure to avoid any traps. With potions of Invisibility, combat was avoided. Eventually, the group made it to the prison within the fortress, Tav using some saved up lightning arrows to grant access further below.
After 4 trials, the group walked through the double doors in the middle of the room, and headed down to find Ansur being nothing but a pile of bones. Without thinking, Tav walked closer to Ansur, initiating a conversation with him. Much to the dismay of Tav and the group, the conversation didn't go well.
"I gave you everything, Balduran and you repaid me in slaughter. It is time I return the favour." A wind suddenly picked up within the chamber, confusing everyone.
"Let my bones rise and the storms gather. Witness Balduran - the final tempest has come. I am the Heart of the Gate! I am the One Who Roars! This time, you will not escape it!" Ansur roared, now up and ready for combat. Before Tav did anything else, she ran back toward the group, trying to protect herself.
Astarion would kill me if he were here. Tav thought as she rummaged through her back, luckily finding a scroll that would be useful.
Before Ansur could harm them, Tav used her scroll of Globe of Invulnerability and created a dome around her, Gale, Wyll and Karlach.
"The explosives! Karlach! Now!" Tav yelled as the winds picked up, making it difficult to hear. Karlach threw every explosive she had on her toward Ansur. Soon, the dragon was surrounded by at least 10 smoke-powder bombs, 6-7 firewine and smoke-powder barrels and a rune-powder bomb Tav never used on the Steelwatch Foundry.
"Wyll! Fire!" Tav turned to Wyll, who now had flames erupting from his palms.
———
Soon enough, the barrels and bombs underneath Ansur were exploding, weakening him significantly. With one last effort, Gale used Magic Missile to take Ansur down once and for all. A few minutes later, Ansur was dead, leaving the group ready for a small break.
"Wyll, go back to camp. Rest up. Inform your father of what has happened. Send Shadowheart here." Tav told, watching as Wyll nodded, understanding that his role was done, for now at least. 15 minutes later, Wyll was gone and replaced by Shadowheart, who looked ready.
"What's our plan, soldier?" Karlach asked as Tav led the group back up to the main portion of the fortress.
"Firstly, we're gonna get as close to Gortash without letting him know we're about to attack, just like with Orin. Keep as far away from any traps as possible. Setting them off could alert Gortash. Our main strategy is a surprise attack." Tav told, allowing Gale to turn all of them invisible.
With Tav leaving, they all made it up to the top of Wyrm's Rock Fortress, avoiding any traps and any unnecessary fights.
"Alright. Gale, I want you and Shadowheart to remain out here. Shadowheart will activate her Spirit Guardian so we'll have another aid in our fight. Karlach, I want you inside with me. I want you to wait in the doorway, staying invisible until I give you the go-ahead to anger Gortash. I'll move around and disable any traps that could potentially give Gortash more power." Tav told, watching as everyone got into position. Tav and Karlach consumed two more potions of Invisibility before entering the building. Karlach waited in place while Tav moved around, disabling any and all viewable traps.
"Now!" Tav whispered, moving back toward the exit. Tav smirked while Karlach aimed and shot a special arrow, which surprisingly did more damage than either expected it to. Karlach moved back with Tav, both of them prepped for Gortash and his soldiers to follow, which they did.
Bringing Gortash out into the open was a huge help for the group, as he was now too far away from anything that could give him more power. With a final strike of Curriculum of Strategy: Artistry of War - courtesy of Gale, Gortash was defeated. His soldiers took an extra few minutes, but eventually, the last Netherstone was in Tav's hand.
"10 years of torment. The fighting, the glory, the loneliness, the fucking loneliness. All of it, so I could rot, because the person I trusted the most, gave me away to the devil!" Karlach raged, unable to hold back her sobs.
"It isn't fair. I don't want it like this. I don't want to die. I want to live. I want to stay." Karlach breathed, calming down.
"Let's get out of here. I've hated this place. Stupid fucking gigantic bridge or whatever. I think I need to go to camp for a while. Be alone. Scream at the sky. You can come find me later if you want." Karlach exhaled before leaving, taking her time as she walked back to camp.
"Bane's chosen has fallen. His Netherstone is yours. You have done well." The Emperor told.
"Where do we go from here?" Tav asked, confused.
"The Elder Brain is regaining its autonomy. It cries not from pain, but exaltation. We must stop it before it breaks free." The Emperor answered before he went silent, leaving Shadowheart, Gale and Tav to return to camp.
"Success?" Wyll asked, drinking another potion of healing.
"All 3 Netherstones are ours. All we have left to do is destroy the Absolute. But that is tomorrow's problem. We need to rest up. Regain our energy and strength." Tav nodded, putting Gortash's Netherstone in her bag, alone with Orin's and Ketheric's.
Chapter 4: Once and for all
Summary:
Tav can't hide her development from Halsin anymore.
The Absolute is destroyed.
Chapter Text
The time had come. The earthquakes had become worse than they had ever been. All 3 Netherstones had been retrieved, leaving Tav and the group to finally go up against the Absolute.
Wyll rebranded himself the 'Blade of Avernus', after the confrontation with Ansur. Shadowheart managed to rescue her parents and learn more about her - once lost - past. Karlach's oppressor was finally dead after 10 years of pain and suffering. Astarion's old master was now nothing but a pile of ash after 200 years of slavery. Halsin's mission of saving Moonrise Towers had been a success with the land now returning to its former glory. Jaheira reunited with an old ally and friend of hers - Minsc. Both Gale and Lae'zel knew their personal missions would not yet be completed until after the Absolute was defeated.
Once again, Tav was unable to fall asleep. Not only was the upcoming fight utterly terrifying her and causing nightmares, but her nausea was making it uncomfortable to sleep.
So, Tav headed out into the main area, using her firebolt cantrip to light a fire for herself. She sat in front of the fire, basking in its warmth. She smiled, reliving some of her more pleasant memories of her journey in her mind.
"Can't sleep, my heart?" Halsin's deep voice momentarily frightened Tav, snapping her out of her memories.
"Just...reminiscing." Tav smiled, letting Halsin sit down next to her.
"I can see that something is bothering you. You're not as optimistic as normal." Halsin wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
"Bothering me? Not exactly. Well, yes. It's bothering me in a way that I haven't been able to sleep in a while." Tav clarified.
"What is it?" Halsin asked.
"I know that this is probably the worst time to tell you this, but Jaheira and Astarion convinced me that you deserve to know before we end up facing the Absolute. I'm pregnant." Tav spoke, waiting for Halsin's response.
"You're...oh my. Thank the Oak Father!" Halsin quietly cheered, wrapping his arms fully around Tav.
"You're happy?" Tav was surprised.
"Of course I'm happy. Nature has bestowed the most precious of gifts in you. I have always wanted to be a father and now I will be!" Halsin confirmed, placing a gentle kiss to Tav's forehead.
"I wanted you to know, so that we'll both have a good memory to hold on to if something happens." Tav tried to hold back her tears.
"You are the strongest person I have ever met, Tav. You have slain devils, saved prisoners from an underwater prison. Moonrise Towers and the Grove are still standing because of you. You could have let me die in the Goblin camp, but you didn't. I believe, with all of my heart and soul, that you will be victorious. You will live to tell the tale of the Absolute's downfall." Halsin insisted.
"Above all, you will be the best mother. My child will be lucky to have you as their mother." Halsin gave Tav one final hug.
"Now, rest up. We have a long battle ahead of us." Halsin put out the fire and lifted Tav into his arms, carrying her back to her room. Surprisingly, she was already asleep by the time Halsin pulled the blanket over Tav's body. Instead of heading back to his own room, Halsin climbed behind Tav, making sure not to wake her. As soon as he let his body sink into the bed, Tav curled into him, her head now resting on his chest. His arm snaked around Tav's waist, his giant hand resting gently over her stomach and abdomen.
———
By 10 AM, everyone was up and ready to go. Gale, Lae'zel and Karlach travelled around the city with Tav, collecting as many supplies as possible. By the time they returned to camp, they had enough healing potions to help a 100-men army. Every single existing scroll being sold by vendors was in the bags carried by the four adventurers. Gale learned any heavy-hitting spell he could. Lae'zel and Karlach prepared their weapons.
Before long, Tav, Gale, Karlach and Lae'zel were travelling through the Morphic Pool, fighting off enemies without using any spells. Karlach and Lae'zel did most of the work, enjoying the stress-relief that came from killing small enemies.
The group was confronted by the Elder Brain, who attempted 4 times to kill them. Right as the Elder Brain was going to end them right there and then, The Emperor managed to save them, getting them back to the Astral Prism.
"Orpheus is right there. Let's free him and take down the Absolute once and for all." Lae'zel glared at Tav, who glanced between Orpheus and The Emperor.
If Tav chose The Emperor, she'd lose Lae'zel right before the biggest battle Faerûn had ever seen. If Tav chose Orpheus, The Emperor would have no choice but to join the side of the Absolute, using all of his knowledge about the group against them.
Having gained a valuable ally in Lae'zel, Tav grabbed the Orphic Hammer from her bag and got ready to free Orpheus. Besides, how could Tav abandon Lae'zel and her fight against Vlaakith when she had done so much to save her from Orin?
The moment Tav used the Orphic Hammer to break the chains holding Orpheus hostage, The Emperor became angry.
"Do not seek me again - we are done. You will live with the consequences of your actions, for the little time you have left." He opened a portal, levitating out of the Astral Prism.
After a small bit of hostility from Orpheus, he agreed that an alliance was needed to defeat the Absolute.
"At this point, it will take an illithid to unleash the full potential of the Netherstones." Orpheus explained, eyeing Tav and Lae'zel.
"Wait. Maybe you don't have to - it should be me." Karlach offered, stepping forward.
After a long conversation, Tav watched with a bittersweet heart as Karlach became a Mind flayer. She was completely transformed. Tav was happy, now that Karlach wasn't going to die, but she was also sad, knowing she would never be the same again.
Returning to the city, Gale, Tav, Karlach - now a Mind flayer - and Lae'zel came across Kith'rak Voss, who was more than happy to offer his assistance in the battle, considering Orpheus was free.
"And we will lose more before the day is out. But even when the last soul falls, Baldur's Gate will stand. For Baldur's Gate is more than just a city. It is more than a place of opportunity for those of mercantile spirit. More than a place of refuge for those who are lost. More than a home for friends, loved ones and adventuring souls. Baldur's Gate is a place where anyone can find what they need - if they're just willing to fight for it. Today, Baldur's gate needs us! Today, we fight for-" A Flaming Fist stopped as Tav opened the double doors, entering the building.
"You're late, friend." He shook his head.
Tav looked around at all the allies in the room. Withers, Volo, Arabella, Zevlor, a battle-ready owlbear, Dammon, Nine-Fingers Keene and the Guild, Barcus Wroot, Halsin, Astarion, Counsellor Florrick, Isobel, Dame Aylin, Mizora, the Gondians, Ulma and the Gur, Jaheira, Minsc and the Harpers, Duke Ravengard, Yurgir, Shadowheart, and Wyll. Every friendly face Tav had met since finding herself on the ravaged beach was standing in front of her, waiting for battle.
"Our freedom depends on your bravery today. You are the guardians of the city!" Tav smiled, earning cheers from everyone in the room.
Tav separated the room into two groups. With a speech out of the way, Tav led Gale, Lae'zel, Karlach and Orpheus toward the archway leading to the High Hall Courtyard.
"Holy fucking hell. That's quite an ambush." Tav and the group remained low to the ground, trying to sneak through.
"Keep to the wall. Go up the ladder. Immediately drink a potion of Invisibility and get past any enemies lurking around. Zevlor and the first half of our allies will fight against the enemies in the courtyard." Tav instructed. She looked behind her to see group one ready for action. Gale, Karlach, Orpheus, Lae'zel and Tav stuck to the wall while Zevlor led his group into battle against the army of Absolutists waiting for them.
"Together, we fight!" Zevlor raised his fist, immediately charging into battle with Volo, Arabella, the owlbear, Dammon, Nine-Fingers Keene, the Guild, Barcus Wroot, Halsin, Astarion, Counsellor Florrick, Isobel and Dame Aylin.
Managing to sneak around the battlements, Tav and her group managed to get to the High Hall, behind two huge doors. She took a moment to breathe, trying to hold down the nausea threatening to spill. The group kept going, eventually reaching the brain cell.
"We have one chance. None of us are to attack. We defend and move as far as possible. The faster we get the portal opened, the faster we can destroy the Absolute, got it?" Tav looked around at her allies.
"Karlach, you've got the Netherstones, so you're with me. Lae'zel, you and Orpheus stick together. Gale, as the best Wizard I know, please, counterspell as much as you can. We can't risk you being commanded to hush, or to flee. Got it?" Tav glared at Gale, who nodded.
"Let's save Baldur's Gate." Tav smiled before beginning her climb up the brain cell.
"I know you. I know everything about you. Your thoughts, your feelings, your weaknesses. And so do they." The Emperor gestured to the other 3 dream guardians who were prepared for battle.
"Shadowheart, you're up." Tav used her illithid link with Shadowheart to send her a message. Within minutes, the second half of all the allies appeared atop the brain, beginning the fight.
"You go. We'll hold them off!" Wyll confirmed.
"For Baldur's Gate!" Duke Ravengard roared.
While Tav, Gale, Karlach, Lae'zel and Orpheus tried to get to the Crown of Karsus, Mizora, the Gondians, Ulma, the Gur, Jaheira, Minsc, the Harpers, Duke Ravengard, Yurgir, Shadowheart and Wyll dealt with the huge amount of enemies.
Gale was up first. He got as far as he could by using a scroll of Misty Step before dashing as fast as he could.
Tav and Karlach were up next. They used a scroll of Dimension Door to get past the initial swarm of enemies. Tav proceeded to use Misty Step to get even further, while Karlach used her newly-gained ability to levitate to get near where Tav had ended up, only a few feet from the Crown of Karsus.
Lae'zel followed Tav's lead by using a scroll of Dimension Door to successfully get Orpheus halfway through the battlefield. While Orpheus dashed as far as he could, like Tav, Lae'zel used a scroll of Misty Step to bypass some Mind flayer enemies.
Eventually, Gale was at the Crown of Karsus. He used a scroll of Globe of Invulnerability to protect himself, Tav, Karlach, Orpheus and Lae'zel. While they used their skills to help their allies fight off the Absolutists, Karlach used the Netherstones to open a portal. Soon enough, the 5 of them were inside the portal, face to face with the Elder Brain.
"Overcome. Override. OVERRULE." The Elder Brain tried to fight against Tav and the group, who were using ranged attacks.
Right as the group avoided being killed by the last orb of negation that the Elder Brain manifested, Tav pulled a scroll out of her bag and took a deep breath in and out, hoping it would finish off the brain once and for all.
Aiming it, Tav used a scroll of Disintegrate against the brain, watching as it shook uncontrollably.
"Spare me. Join me. BECOME ABSOLUTE." The Elder Brain pleaded.
Tav had no intention of letting the Absolute prevail. With all of her strength, Tav commanded the brain to destroy all existing tadpoles and then itself.
"My master. I must...OBEY. I must...END." The brain did as it was told. The Netherstones levitated in the air as its power broke through the Crown of Karsus. Suddenly, all of those who had been infected with tadpoles fell to the floor in pain. The Crown of Karsus broke free and fell down into the River Chionthar while the Netherstones became permanently destroyed.
Gale and Karlach were worried when Tav didn't get up after her tadpole was gone. Before they could help her, the brain started dying, moving through the city before crashing into the River Chionthar. Gale quickly held onto Karlach and Tav before using Dimension Door to land safely on the nearby docks. Lae'zel did the same with Orpheus, watching as the brain slowly sank into the river, a blast of energy enveloping the city.
———
While most of the allies made their way to destroyed parts of the city to help those hurt or in danger, Halsin, Astarion, Jaheira, Minsc, Shadowheart and Wyll, rushed to the docks to meet their friends.
"TAV!" Astarion and Halsin rushed toward Tav, who was still on the floor, unconscious.
"Do something!" Astarion insisted as Halsin guided his hand over Tav's body to see if she was still alive. He let out an exhale of relief when he sensed that his and Tav's unborn child was still alive, meaning she must've been too.
"She's alive. They're both alive." Halsin reassured Astarion, who nodded.
"Both alive? Does that mean…?" Karlach gasped.
"Yes. She’s pregnant…with my baby." Halsin smiled.
Once Tav was conscious, and been helped to stand by Halsin, Orpheus stood forward.
After a long conversation, Orpheus and Lae'zel left on their own dragons, intending to end Vlaakith's reign. Gale vowed to Tav that he would find the Crown of Karsus and return it to Mystra. Karlach set off on her own adventure, promising to write as often as she could. Wyll set up a plan that would mean he could not only help his father rebuild Baldur's Gate, but also travel to Avernus to get revenge on Zariel on Karlach's behalf. Jaheira and Minsc agreed to meet Tav and Halsin back at Moonrise Towers so they could all help Moonrise grow and heal properly. Shadowheart intended to spend her time with her parents, regaining her stolen memories of her childhood.
"I honestly don't mind what we do once we get to the - ow!" Astarion felt a pain on his hand and face.
"What the - oh gods. Oh no!" Astarion panicked as soon as his skin started turning silver, steam radiating off his body.
"Well...i- it was nice while it lasted! Argh! I'm sorry, I- I have to go!" Astarion immediately started running away, trying to get to safety - away from the sun.
"He will sorely miss that freedom, I sense. It may be quite some time before we see him again." Halsin wrapped his arm around Tav's shoulder, letting out a disappointed sigh.
"I won't wait. I'll search for him tonight. I can't bare the thought of him being all alone." Tav insisted.
"Then I shall join you. But, for now, I think it's safe to say that we need some food and some rest. You more than I." Halsin smiled, gesturing to Tav's stomach.
Chapter 5: The aftermath
Summary:
Tav attempts to look for Astarion, but he finds her instead.
Chapter Text
Baldur's Gate would never be the same. The buildings could be rebuilt bigger and better, and families could be reunited, but the spirit of the city would take a long time to recover.
Tav was hungry, and she knew that lack of food consumption over the last couple of days would've impacted her pregnancy, so she wanted to eat as much as she could handle now that there was no threat.
Walking through the broken city, Tav took in her surroundings as she and Halsin walked back to the Elfsong Tavern - if it was still standing. The top of Ramazith's Tower was completely gone, a lot of the building having caved in when the Nautiloids appeared during the final battle. Tav glanced up at Cazador's Palace, a smile on her face when the entire building was gone. Tav was sure that seeing Cazador's Palace having been completely destroyed put a smile on Astarion's face, wherever he was now.
Every few moments, men, women and children stopped Tav and Halsin, thanking them profusely for saving not only them, but the whole of Baldur's Gate.
Tav stopped 5 minutes away from the tavern, when a little girl ran up to her, balling her eyes out.
"I can’t find my mommy!" She cried, burying her face behind Tav’s legs.
"It’s okay. We’ll look for her. I promise." Tav immediately dropped her plan to sit down and eat, wanting to find the little girl’s mum.
It took 45 minutes before the little girl’s mum was located. They had been separated when a large piece of debris fell and crushed half of their home. In a sea of panicked citizens, the little girl got swept away.
"Thank you, thank you so much for finding her!" The mum nodded, hugging her daughter tightly.
"I’m just glad you both are okay." Tav smiled before heading back to original plan that revolved around eating at the tavern.
By sunset, Tav was full. She had eaten as much as her nausea would allow.
"You feel better?" Halsin smiled as he put his - now empty - glass of beer down onto the table.
"Actually, yeah. Weirdly enough, I don't like spicy pork sausage. I can't handle much spice normally." Tav chuckled, wiping her mouth.
"Pregnancy will do that to you. I have seen many pregnant mothers in my day, some of whom eat foods they normally dislike." Halsin told.
"Well, sucks that I can't stand the smell of oranges now. And pumpkins make my nausea worse." Tav leaned back, putting her left hand on her flat abdomen. She knew that in a few months, her body would grow and adapt to the baby inside of her.
"Speaking of pregnancy, I saw your motherly instincts showing earlier." Halsin smiled, holding Tav's free hand.
"What? When I was helping that girl? Anyone would've helped her." Tav shook her head.
"I don't think so. From the moment a woman's pregnancy starts, their instincts are more 'motherly'. They have to think not only for themselves, but for their baby. You saw that child and feared for her safety. It's perfectly natural for expectant mothers." Halsin reassured her.
"Speaking of fearing for safety, the sun's down now. I bet Astarion's somewhere." Tav stood up, placing a big bag of coins down on the table.
"No need, 'luv." The waitress smiled, pushing the coins back toward Tav.
"I ordered a meal, I ate the meal. I'm going to pay for it." Tav insisted.
"Everyone in this city watched as you and your companions so gallantly went up against the Absolute with no hesitation, and won! The least I could do is comp your meal. You deserve it." The waitress handed the bag back to Tav, who slipped it back into her pocket.
"Have a nice night." Tav spoke before leaving the tavern with Halsin.
———
Tav and Halsin searched most of the city. From the Basilisk Gate to the Grey Harbour Docks, Tav and Halsin checked everywhere, even asking random citizens if they had seen a pale elf with silver hair and red eyes scampering about. When they turned up empty, Tav knew that Astarion could hide and wouldn't be found if he wanted to stay hidden. So, she and Halsin returned to the tavern, heading up the stairs. Tav felt bittersweet knowing that the rooms her friends had once inhabited would now be empty, as her friends had gone off on their own adventures, now that the Absolute was defeated.
"Astarion!" Halsin alerted Tav to Astarion's presence as they entered the main area. Tav smiled with tears in her eyes as she watched Astarion turn to face away from the roaring fire behind him.
"You're okay!" Tav pulled Astarion in for a big hug, not wanting to let him go.
"Well, I figured that since I'm part of the reason the Absolute is gone, maybe I could stay here, in the tavern, for a little while." Astarion smiled.
"Where have you been? I worried when we couldn't find you." Tav asked, confused.
"I went to find food. No living people, I promise. Once I was...satisfied, I went to Cazador's Palace. I cannot express how...relieved I felt, knowing that bastard was not only dead, but everything he had built, everything he had, was gone. Destroyed." Astarion smiled, pulling away from Tav's hug.
"Then, I came here. Thought that at least one of our friends could be here. When I entered and saw this place empty, I worried that I was alone." Astarion exhaled.
"Now that we're free from the tadpoles, free from the Absolute, I was probably going to travel with Halsin back to Moonrise Towers. We want to help Moonrise fully return to its former glory and it would be nice to make sure that Thaniel and Oliver were doing okay. As for travelling, I'm not as energetic and I don't have as much stamina as normal because of my pregnancy, so it'd be wise for me to rest up before beginning our journey." Tav smiled.
"Since we're not...you know...dead, I've thought a bit about what we discussed before." Astarion told.
"Before you say anything, I have no issue with whatever plan you have. If you don't, I can't force you." Tav explained.
"You told me, that neither you, nor Halsin would have any issues with me being part of you and your baby's life, and...I was scared at first, considering I had never needed to take care of myself, let alone anyone else. It might take a little while, but I'd be willing to try and be a guardian in your baby's life, as well as a lover in yours and Halsin's life." Astarion nodded.
"Really?" Tav smiled, unable to hold back her tears.
"Before we met, I was alone. I was being forced to seduce and lure victims to their deaths and I had no control. But then, I met you. You let me bite you, and you didn't force me to bite the neck of that annoying drow trader. You gave me choices and let me decide for myself what I wanted to do with my life." Astarion smiled.
"Does this mean you will return with us to Moonrise Towers, and possibly even the Grove?" Halsin spoke up, a slight touch of hope in his voice.
"If it is alright with you both, I would like to spend some time travelling, by myself. I can't go far, considering my condition, but I'd like to experience more of Faerûn before I...settle down." Astarion asked.
"Of course, I'll be by your side close to the baby's due date and from then on, I'd be happy to stay with you both." Astarion clarified.
"Anything you want, Astarion. Halsin and I will be eagerly awaiting your return to Moonrise Towers." Tav confirmed, placing a gentle kiss on Astarion's cheek.
"I shall bring you both back a token of my travels." Astarion ensured before standing up.
"You're leaving already?" Tav furrowed her eyebrows.
"Not yet, darling. I'd like to rest before I begin my travels. I'll spend tonight and tomorrow preparing my bag." Astarion chuckled before retreating to his room.
"He's going to be fine, right?" Tav asked as she and Halsin retreated back to her room. There was no use for using separate beds now that the world was no longer ending.
"He spent months travelling with you. He'll be just fine." Halsin reassured Tav as they changed into their camp clothes before getting into bed.
Chapter 6: Little companions
Summary:
With Tav and Halsin beginning their journey back to Moonrise Towers, a few little companions decide to join the travellers.
Chapter Text
"Hey Halsin, have you seen Yenna anywhere?" Tav questioned as she put her travellers chest on the cart waiting outside the tavern. The cart was led with two horses being groomed, with a cart connected to the back.
"I haven't seen her. Let me go look for her." Halsin shook his head, heading back inside the tavern. He barely looked for 2 minutes before he found Yenna sitting at one of the tables near the bar, surrounded by some other children.
"I found her!" Halsin called out to Tav, who entered the tavern, following the sound of Yenna's voice through the fully packed tavern.
"Mol! Arabella! Mattis! Silfy! Mirkon! You’re all okay!" Tav excitedly opened her arms and was immediately greeted to a small group hug with the children. Surprisingly, they all happily hugged Tav, one by one pulling away.
"Where have you all been? Are any of you hurt?" Tav inspected her allies.
"Apart from a few scratches and bruises, we're all good. I got Scratch to safety. As we ran far from the danger, I came across Mol, Mattis, Silfy and Mirkon, who were happy to let me and Scratch stay safe with them." Yenna spoke up.
"As soon as Yenna mentioned that she had been staying with you, I didn't waste any time helping her." Mol smiled.
"Zevlor and our group made quick work of the army in the High Hall Courtyard. He basically raced everyone to safety once the enemies had been killed. Then I found Mol, Mattis, Silfy, Mirkon, Yenna and Scratch underground, so I stayed with them." Arabella exhaled.
"I am so glad you're all okay. I couldn't live with myself if any of you didn't make it." Tav admitted, sitting down.
"Speaking of being okay, as you might already know, most of us are...kind of parent-less. Would it okay if we stay with you?" Mol explained, clearly uncomfortable with being so emotional.
"How long will each of you need to gather your belongings?" Tav smiled, earning a wide grin from Halsin.
"Really?" Arabella nearly jumped up and down from joy.
"We're heading back to Moonrise Towers, if you are all okay with joining us?" Halsin nodded.
"We'll be back in 15 minutes!" Yenna smiled. The children immediately scattered, leaving Halsin and Tav to wait by the carriage. Luckily for them, the carriage was big enough for a large group, with Halsin offering to drive the horse and carriage to the destination.
As Yenna said, she, Mol, Arabella, Mirkon, Mattis and Silfy were back at the tavern 15 minutes later, each child with a small bag that would easily fit alongside the travellers chest, the bedrolls and bags belonging to Halsin and Tav. Once everything was secured, the children, Scratch, Cub and Tav got into the carriage which was being led by Halsin. Within a few minutes, the group was slowly travelling through the city, beginning their journey. Halsin had opted to open the window separating him from the group inside the carriage, so they could communicate with him to pass the time.
"Oh how I wished we travelled like this earlier." Tav relaxed into her seat, glad that she could rest.
"Will Jaheira be at Moonrise Towers?" Mol asked, curious.
"Yes. She is already on her way back, with her friend Minsc, who you'll meet when we arrive." Tav confirmed, resting her hands on her abdomen.
———
Just over a day and a half later, Tav was thrilled to see the outline of Moonrise Towers in the distance.
"It's looking much better, isn't it?" Tav called out to Halsin, who chuckled.
"Yes. I bet Jaheira would've already started cleaning up the place." Halsin nodded, slowing the horses down so he and the group could admire the landscape they were travelling past.
"What is the plan with the Last Light Inn? Surely Jaheira wouldn't abandon it?" Tav asked.
"Jaheira and I talked back at the tavern. I think she is planning to refurbish the inn and even expand it for any families who come to live there. Now that the land is no longer cursed by Ketheric Thorm, it's going to hopefully be inhabitable. Jaheira also plans to build another bridge that connects behind the Grand Mausoleum to the dock behind the Last Light Inn. That should create another point of entry between two parts of the land." Halsin explained.
"What about the Mind flayer colony and the Gauntlet of Shar? What will happen to them?" Tav asked, genuinely curious.
"The entrances to those places will be permanently closed. The last thing we want is for people to get hurt in those places." Halsin told.
"Sounds like a safe plan." Tav nodded.
"Halsin, how long do we have left of our travel?" Mattis asked.
"Still a few hours, unfortunately. Maybe 3 to 4 hours." Halsin replied.
"Ugh. Travelling is so boring." Yenna groaned.
"Calm yourself, Yenna. I was travelling great distances like this by walking, day and night, boiling hot days and freezing cold days. We didn't have access to horse and carriages." Tav chuckled.
"This was before we defeated the Absolute, right? Wyll told me a few bits and pieces, but never told the whole story of your journey to Baldur's Gate." Arabella mentioned.
"Yes. Would you like to hear about my travels with my companions?" Tav offered.
"If it'll pass the time, then hells yes!" Mirkon cheered.
"Alright. It all started on a Nautiloid ship. I had woken up after a few dragons had attacked the ship." Tav begun the story.
"Once the ship had crashed, Shadowheart and I defeated some intellect devourers before meeting Astarion." Tav continued.
She detailed meeting all of her companions, meeting Mol, Arabella, Mirkon, Mattis and Silfy. She gave a light description of defeating the goblin camp and saving Halsin, as to not scare the children. The children were amazed by her braveness against the Hag, her trusting a Mind flayer in the Underdark, and helping Duke Ravengard's allies in Waukeen's Rest. Mol couldn't believe that Tav had the guts to go against Vlaakith - the Githyanki Queen -, and Arabella was glad that Tav had decided not to kill her Dream Guardian inside the Astral Prism. Tav chuckled when the children reacted with cheers as she told them about going against Nere, and saving the Deep Gnomes.
By the time Tav was about to start talking about entering the Shadow Cursed Lands, Halsin announced that they would be arriving at Moonrise Towers momentarily.
"What happened next? Did Wyll find his father in Moonrise Towers?" Mol's eyes widened in confusion.
"Did Karlach get her infernal heart fixed by Dammon?" Yenna asked.
"I will continue the story another time, I promise." Tav insisted.
Soon enough, the carriage and cart stopped, Halsin opening the door. He let the children out first, before helping Tav out.
"You are the most wonderful storyteller. Our child will be lucky that you have such interesting stories to tell when they are older." Halsin complimented Tav as they walked.
"Of course, I might've skipped a few details as to not permanently scare the children." Tav admitted, seeing Jaheira and Minsc nearby.
"Nevertheless, I was slightly disappointed that you could not carry on the story." Halsin frowned slightly.
"I will continue the story for you and for the children some other time, Halsin. Besides, don't you know how the story goes, considering you were part of it?" Tav laughed.
"Yes, but it sounds a lot more fantastical coming from you, my heart." Halsin kissed Tav's forehead.
"We've barely been apart a day and a half and I still find your romance sickeningly sweet." Jaheira cleared her throat, earning a chuckle from Halsin and Tav.
"Minsc and Boo find it quite nice that two heroes have time for romance. Moonrise Towers has been very lonely without you both here." Minsc told.
"We missed you and Boo, too." Tav chuckled, seeing the children running around.
"So, where is this plan of yours, Jaheira? We've still got a few hours left of the day." Halsin asked, watching as Jaheira pulled a large piece of folded paper out from her backpack.
"I have been designing this plan since we left Moonrise for Baldur's gate. Each building will be transformed for the better, allowing the land to more welcoming for anyone who needs refuge." Jaheira started explaining all the designs to Tav, Halsin and Minsc, who were quite impressed.
"Because of this plan, Moonrise Towers will be beautiful once again." Tav smiled.
Chapter 7: Earlier than expected
Summary:
Tav starts noticing her pregnancy earlier on than she expected.
Chapter Text
A few weeks had passed since Tav, Halsin, Scratch, Cub, Mol, Arabella, Mirkon, Yenna, Mattis and Silfy arrived at Moonrise Towers. Since their arrival, the group had helped Jaheira and Minsc start the process of restoring the land surrounding them.
Tav and the children focused on helping clear out the inn, getting rid of any corpses and other things that shouldn’t be in a living space.
Halsin and Minsc focused on clearing out Moonrise Towers and the House of Healing.
Jaheira and her Harpers worked on clearing out the surrounding buildings, cutting off any entrances to any dangerous areas (the Gauntlet of Shar, and the Mind flayer colony).
By the end of the day, Tav and the children had completed their task. Most of Moonrise Towers and the House of Healing had been cleared out. The remaining buildings had been cleared and Jaheira needed a little bit more help covering the entrance to the Mind flayer colony.
Every building was cleaned out. Remnants of the curse brought about by Ketheric was destroyed with magic. Corpses were disposed of. Anything old was replaced/repaired or repurposed. With the sun glistening over the land, and the buildings now matching the surrounding landscape, everyone knew that a bright future was coming for them and the land.
———
By nightfall, Tav and Halsin had retreaded back to the inn, Tav feeling particularly tired from a full day on her feet. While Tav started to undress, Halsin closed the divider that separated their shared bed from the rest of the inn. Before she fully rolled down her shirt, she stopped.
"Halsin?" Tav got his attention as she stared at herself in the mirror, focusing her gaze on her abdomen.
"Yes, my heart. What is it?" Halsin immediately focused his attention on Tav, who gestured to her body.
"You look beautiful, Tav. Your body is going to get more beautiful as your body grows to support the baby." Halsin reassured her.
"Speaking of supporting a baby, how early on in a pregnancy does one start to show?" Tav questioned, seeing that her abdomen had started poking out a bit more than usual. It was starting to look like a small baby bump.
"Well, it depends. For some pregnancies, a woman can show as early as 16-20 weeks." Halsin told.
"I’m 7 weeks along and look, my body is starting to show a baby bump." Tav smiled slightly.
"There is another explanation for that. You could be having twins." Halsin suggested.
"T- Twins? You mean there could be two babies in me right now?" Tav was shocked.
"I can check for you?" Halsin offered.
"Yes, please." Tav nodded, getting onto the bed before rolling up her shirt.
His hand hovered over Tav’s skin, moving from the top of her stomach, down below her abdomen. After a few moments, he pulled his hand away and sat down next to Tav while she sat up.
"So?" Tav asked.
"I can confirm that you are indeed carrying twins. That’s why your baby bump has shown up faster. Two babies take as much time as one baby to grow, but of course, they take up double the room." Halsin explained.
"Hells, we’re gonna have two children." Tav smiled, wiping the tears from her cheeks.
"Two beautiful children who will certainly take after their mother." Halsin kisses Tav’s forehead.
"I’m gonna guess that at least one of our children will look more like you than me." Tav predicted.
"Your children will be lucky, no matter whose features they inherit." Tav and Halsin heard Jaheira’s voice behind the divider.
"Goodnight, Jaheira." Tav called out.
"Goodnight." Jaheira spoke before one of the - many - lights in the room were turned off.
"Astarion will definitely be surprised when he returns from his travels." Tav whispered to Halsin now that another person was in the room, albeit asleep.
"I’m sure he’ll be fine with the idea of being around two babies, not just one." Halsin snickered, getting into bed with Tav.
"We’ll just have to wait and see." Tav placed a kiss to Halsin’s lips before turning around so her back pressed up against Halsin’s chest. She liked this position and she knew Halsin did too, as he could put his arm around her waist, allowing his hand to gently rest on her stomach.
Chapter 8: Love of 'nature's gifts'
Summary:
Tav continues her story.
Halsin can't help but reminisce about his past with Tav and Astarion.
Chapter Text
Halsin could see the visible relief on Tav's face as she entered her second trimester. She was a lot more active, wasn't as pale and wasn't vomiting as much anymore. Her baby bump was larger, and Halsin couldn't help but admire how well Tav was doing growing twins.
"I sent a letter to Wyll. I thought that maybe he and some of the Flaming Fist could lend a hand helping revive Moonrise Towers. He replied back, informing me he'd be here first thing tomorrow, provided the weather was okay." Tav told as she put on a robe, trying to combat the wintery day she and everyone else seemed to have been enduring.
"Sounds like a good plan." Halsin nodded, placing a kiss to her lips.
"Now, if you'll excuse me, I promised Yenna I'd continue the story." Tav took a moment to stand up, trying to balance herself. With the baby bump now very prominent to anyone who looked at Tav, Halsin found himself staring at her more often, unable to stop smiling at the thought of his children being inside her womb. He watched as Tav waddled away, heading for the fire pit outside, near the stable. Halsin followed, intending to go and help Jaheira, Minsc and the Harpers fix the first building - formerly Reithwin Tollhouse, but he stopped as he walked by the firepit, watching as the children got ready for Tav to continue the story.
"We previously ended with the Grymforge." Mirkon spoke up, reminding Tav.
"Ah, right. So, after we got the Adamantine Mace, defeated Nere and saved the Deep Gnomes, it was time to go to the Shadow-Cursed Lands." Tav continued. Halsin didn't bother moving. He wanted to not only hear Tav's beautiful story-telling, but to see the reactions from the children.
Tav detailed showing up to the Last Light Inn, befriending Jaheira and her Harpers. Mol was glad that Tav and her friends had managed to stop Isobel from being taken by Flaming Fist Marcus on Ketheric Thorm's behalf. Arabella spoke up and mentioned how grateful she was when Tav got to the part about her and her parents. Yenna was shocked to learn that Raphael wanted Tav's help in killing an enemy of his.
"To answer your previous question, Yenna, no. Unfortunately, while Dammon did make fixes to Karlach's infernal heart, they were only temporary. We all knew that eventually her heart would burn too much and she'd have to return to Avernus." Tav exhaled, momentarily thinking about Karlach's current state as a Mind flayer.
Halsin almost interrupted the story when Tav begun talking about helping him find Thaniel by keeping the portal open, and convincing Oliver to rejoin with Thaniel, but he stopped himself.
Of course Mol and Arabella were curious as to the details of the trials within the Gauntlet of Shar, and Mirkon looked visibly relieved to find out that the Nightsong - Dame Aylin - was spared by Shadowheart.
"Once we freed Dame Aylin, it was finally time to lift the Shadow Curse by killing Ketheric Thorm. Of course, getting to him was difficult, considering his large army of cultists." Tav spoke, continuing on to the battle on top of and underneath Moonrise Towers. Mattis couldn't believe that Mizora had gotten herself captured.
"To answer your previous question, Mol, yes. We did find Duke Ravengard within the Mind flayer colony underneath Moonrise Towers. Unfortunately, before we could do anything to save him, he had been infected with a tadpole and Gortash and Orin left, taking him with them to Baldur's Gate." Tav shook her head.
Tav told the children about almost managing to get Ketheric to surrender before he became the Apostle of Myrkul. They were all amazed when hearing about Dame Aylin's amazing skills in battle. The children collectively cheered when Tav discussed Ketheric's final moments. Halsin chimed in, telling the children how he graciously accepted Tav's invitation to join her and her group of friends on their journey to Baldur's Gate. She mentioned Dame Aylin and Isobel reuniting and agreeing to temporarily join her group, as well as Jaheira agreeing to join her group.
"Apologies for interrupting story time, but I require Tav's help. There's a wall that neither me, nor the Harpers are strong enough to break. We thought that maybe Magic Missile might work?" Jaheira cleared her throat right after Tav finished talking about some Githyanki warriors ambushing the group as they made their way to the outskirts of the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
"I'll be there in just a moment, Jaheira." Tav nodded, watching as Jaheira walked off.
"Once the Githyanki had been defeated, we begun the final stretch of our journey to Baldur's Gate. The most magical thing happened as we walked. The sun rose for the first time since we entered the lands. But, we stopped and turned around, watching as a golden light enveloped the trees and the statue in the middle of Reithwin Town. Before we knew it, the land was starting to get back to normal. The trees and all the nature were looking healthy again." Tav smiled, setting her eyes on the statue that wasn't difficult to see from across the waters, outside the inn.
"And? What happened next?" Mirkon asked, clearly wondering on everyone's behalf.
"To be continued." Tav smiled before standing up, making her way toward Jaheira and the Harpers who were at the old tollhouse.
"Halsin! Can you continue the story? Please!" Arabella begged.
"Sorry, my dear. I'm leaving the story-telling to Tav." Halsin declined, leaving the children to run around the inn.
———
While Tav used Magic Missile to break down any walls that proved a bit too difficult, Halsin used his strength to move heavier objects. He had put another big chunk of Shadow-Cursed tree trunks in a pile that rested near the statue - a pile that was going to be destroyed, before watching as Tav used Magic Missile on another wall.
Halsin admired how confident Tav had gotten with her magic abilities. When he first met Tav after being saved by her, she was incredibly skilled with her mele weapons and ranged weapons. But, by the time they had reached the edge of Baldur's Gate, her magic skills had improved and people wouldn't know that she was originally a Rogue. Now, she was a great Rogue, but she had multiclassed into a Wizard, a Warlock and also a Barbarian, making her a dangerous enemy and an amazing ally.
He would never stop loving Tav. That was a realisation he made after she helped rejoin Thaniel and Oliver. Even when his physical body died and his soul passed on, he'd never let go of his love for her. He had many partners in his younger life, but none of them affected him like Tav did. It was like he had a hole in his heart that Tav managed to fill - perfectly. He was amazed by how Tav didn't hesitate to save him in the goblin camp, even though to her and her friends, he seemed like a normal bear. He couldn't believe how determined Tav was to help him rejoin Thaniel and Oliver, even though helping him wasn't necessary. Every time Tav actively tried to help each of their friends find their 'happily ever afters', Halsin's love for Tav grew even more.
Halsin was one of Tav's two lovers. Her heart was also shared with Astarion. To be fair, as Halsin got used to Astarion, he started to feel things for the man. Even when the odds were stacked against him, he managed to stand above it all and come out victorious. When he met Astarion, all he could see was a self-centered pale vampire who wanted to kill his sadistic master so he could take over and become the Vampire Ascendant. But, as time went on, he saw a side of Astarion that he never expected.
He would watch Tav and Astarion at their camp near Moonrise Towers, noting how caring Astarion was toward her. During the party held by Tav and the group at their camp after defeating the goblin camp, Astarion was almost...possessive, waiting for the right time to claim her for himself. But during their final night before going to defeat Ketheric Thorm, he was calm, quiet. After Raphael paid him a visit to discuss the infernal writing scarred on his back, Astarion and Tav talked, about his future after Cazador was gone, and about their future as a couple. He wasn't completely selfish, demanding that Tav help him with his plan, instead, he let Tav voice her opinion, taking all possible scenarios into consideration. Halsin couldn't deny that his heart sped up, watching as Astarion hesitantly accepted Tav's hug. His face was visibly shocked, but once her arms had been around his torso for a few moments, his face lightened and he looked more comfortable before returning her hug.
Halsin then realised that he had judged Astarion too quickly, and that the pale vampire had more love in his heart than Halsin had known. The way Tav and Astarion protected each other, Halsin was a bit jealous, having once hoped for a romance like Tav and Astarion’s. But now, not only did he share Tav’s love with Astarion, but he had started to develop his own feelings for the pale vampire.
He himself had concern for Astarion, knowing that he was roaming Faerûn by himself. He no longer had the ability to walk in the sun - once enabled by a tadpole in his head. He was merely a spawn, unable to do many things he could've been able to if he had ascended. Halsin worried that someone would overpower him, considering he had become slightly weaker since the Absolute was destroyed. Maybe Astarion would find himself trapped somewhere without being able to find sufficient protection from the sun.
There were many possibilities that made Halsin worry for Astarion's safety. But, with some reassuring from Tav, Halsin realised that, before finding himself on the ravaged beach, Astarion spent 200 years prowling about in the moonlight, managing to avoid the sun. Since being back at Moonrise Towers, Halsin would sometimes hear Tav tossing and turning. He assumed that maybe her pregnancy was making it very difficult to sleep, but then he'd hear Astarion's name leave her mouth as she screamed. He often had to wake her up and reassure her that Astarion would be okay on his own, as she had done for him.
Halsin knew that there was no specific point in which he knew he had started to develop feelings for Astarion, but every day, he smiled at the thought that soon enough, Tav would be close to giving birth to twins and Astarion would return, reuniting their newly created family.
Chapter 9: A friendly face
Summary:
Wyll arrives at Moonrise Towers.
Chapter Text
In the early hours of the morning, Tav, Halsin, Jaheira, Minsc and the Harpers were greeted to the sound of horses galloping up near the old Waning Moon. Making their way to the statue, they smiled at the sight of Wyll and at least 15 Flaming Fist Soldiers on horses.
"It may have been only a few months since we last saw each other, but it feels like years." Wyll hopped off his horse, pulling Jaheira into a hug first. Then followed Minsc and Halsin. Wyll stopped and looked Tav up and down, taking in how much she had changed.
"Tav, my dear friend, you look great!" Wyll happily adjusted his hug to fit Tav.
"You look great too, Wyll. How has Baldur’s Gate been since we left?" Tav asked.
"It’s been difficult, but we’re working with what we have. But the real question is, how are you doing?" He gestured to her belly.
"I’ve been fine. Finally entered the second trimester. Less puking is great." Tav nodded.
"Second trimester? You're developing faster than I imagined you would." Wyll smiled, curious.
That's what growing twins will do to a woman." Tav revealed, trying to ignore how sore her chest had been lately.
"Congratulations. One baby is amazing, but two? Halsin must be thrilled that nature has graced you with two babies to love." Wyll looked up at Halsin, who had the biggest grin on his face.
"We're both thrilled. Two will be a handful, but we've dealt with a lot worse." Tav chuckled, guiding Wyll and the Flaming Fists past the old House of Healing. Tav and everyone else could see the shocked look on the Flaming Fists faces as they glanced at the surroundings.
Wyll was surprised to see how bright Moonrise Towers had become. A lot of the structures that previously existed were knocked down, only a few walls remaining.
"What's the plan for the buildings?" Wyll asked as he opened one of the doors leading to the Reithwin Tollhouse.
"We want every building to be open, with lots of space for growth and light." Tav told as she gestured to the exposed nature of the old tollhouse, which was now only two walls and a few doors, part of the structure being destroyed.
"Last Light Inn will be expanded, mostly upward to make space for more comfortable rooms. The area surrounding Last Light will also be used for agriculture, so we can grow healthy crops. The House of Healing will remain as it was, just cleaner and a lot safer - it'll be used as a place for treatment. The Waning Moon will be turned into a tavern, which'll use the crops grown near Last Light. The Mason's Guild will be turned into a...school of sorts, where children can learn about everything from their ABC's to surviving combat encounters. The top floor of the Reithwin Tollhouse will be turned into an armoury, and the bottom floor will be turned into a carpentry station." Halsin excitedly detailed plans for some of the buildings.
"The Mausoleum will remain as it is - just with the Gauntlet of Shar being closed off, and at this time, there aren't any plans for Moonrise Towers. We don't really know what we'll do with that building." Tav mentioned, sitting down on a nearby chair.
"I'm impressed. You both have dedicated so much time to turning this land around. Soon the time will come when Ketheric Thorm's impact on this land will be forgotten." Wyll smiled.
"I'm sure our friends will be surprised if and when they come to visit." Halsin chuckled.
"Speaking of friends, I haven't seen Astarion at all. Is he okay?" Wyll questioned.
"He is just fine. Astarion requested that he spend a few months travelling. He did reassure us that he'd be back a little bit before I am ready to give birth." Tav smiled, seeing the calmed look on Wyll's face now that he knew that Astarion was okay.
Halsin left Tav and Wyll to catch up, considering Tav and Wyll were closer friends. He guided the Flaming Fists to Last Light, hoping they could start the process of building better rooms.
"How are you faring now that your life is not constantly in danger?" Wyll asked, curious.
"I'm great, now that my lack of sleep isn't being caused by an impending doom, instead, because I'm pregnant." Tav exhaled, fidgeting with her fingers.
"Did you not sleep much on our travels?" Wyll was confused.
"I'm not sure anyone noticed, but I spent a lot of my time planning...instead of sleeping. While you and our friends slept peacefully, I would be in my tent, or in my room, figuring out all the details of our future encounters. I planned to kill Priestess Gut in a secluded room within the goblin camp. I planned to try and convince Ketheric Thorm to surrender in Moonrise Towers. I planned to use explosives in the battle with Viconia DeVir. With each and every confrontation, I attempted to keep my plans on track as much as possible, and as expected, not every plan went exactly how I intended it to." Tav explained, seeing the surprise on Wyll's face.
Tav proceeded to recount the fight involving Inquisitor Ch'r'ai W'wargaz and the Githyanki at the Crèche, in which Astarion was forcefully shoved off a high platform, landing with a big thud on the ground below, lowering his health. Tav also recounted the fight with Cazador, in which Shadowheart was paralysed by a Ghoul who attacked her.
"I miss the banter we shared while travelling." Wyll chuckled, being reminded of a conversation he, Gale and Astarion had after encountering Auntie Ethel.
"Ethel mentioned Netherese magic. What in blazes does that mean?" Wyll questioned, confused.
"Magic from the fallen empire of Netheril. Ancient, exceedingly dangerous, and quite unrivalled." Gale explained, earning a concerned look from both Wyll and Astarion.
"Wonderful! I'd hate to be destroyed by any common old magic." Astarion rolled his eyes.
"What do you miss about our time before we destroyed the absolute?" Wyll wondered.
"I miss...the hours we'd spend after every fight, washing the blood off our clothes while we enjoyed listening to enchanted instruments play 'Bard's Dance'. Watching the cold water slowly wash away any signs of blood, hearing a slight bickering whenever Karlach and Lae'zel got into a disagreement over how to correctly sharpen their weapons." Tav chuckled, her hands resting on her baby belly.
"I do fondly remember when you didn't hesitate to defend Astarion after he revealed himself as a vampire." Wyll reminded her.
"As do I fondly remember you willing to don some horns after refusing to kill Karlach." Tav reminded Wyll.
"Both Karlach and Astarion were misjudged - Karlach was seen as a devil, and Astarion was seen as a untrustworthy vampire. Neither of them were who we were initially led to believe." Wyll nodded.
"I think it's about time we go and helped everyone." Tav stood up.
"I can go help everyone else. You can take it easy by entertaining the children. I'm sure there are stories they'd love to hear." Wyll stood up with Tav, walking her out of the tollhouse.
"Actually, I've already been telling them a story." Tav smiled.
"Oh? What tale has caught the attention of the children?" Wyll asked.
"The story of our journey to Baldur's Gate to defeat the Absolute. So far, I told them about all our adventures in and around the Emerald Grove, and our adventures in the Shadow-Cursed lands." Tav explained.
"Ahh, well I'm sure they'll enjoy the final part of our journey." Wyll smiled.
"I'm not finishing the story just yet. I want to let the previous parts sit with them a little longer. I enjoy listening to the theories they come up with." Tav shook her head.
"If I'm still here when you tell the final part of the story, let me know. I'd like to hear about some of the adventures you and our other friends went on when I wasn't needed." Wyll nodded, leaving Tav to join the others in helping build better rooms within Last Light.
Chapter 10: A warning
Summary:
Someone arrives outside Last Light Inn, and they brought a warning.
Chapter Text
Moonlight had enveloped the surrounding land. Another day was soon over, marking Wyll's 3rd week in Moonrise Towers with the Flaming Fists. Only hours ago, Tav had promised the children she would continue the story once the sun had gone down. So, as the moonlight shone brightly in the sky, Tav, Halsin, Wyll, Scratch, Cub and the children sat within Last Light, ready for Tav to tell the final part of the story. Basking in the fire that rested in the center of the ground floor, Tav cleared her throat before starting.
"We were on the final stretch to Baldur's Gate. We spent one night just outside Rivington, but unfortunately-" Tav stopped when she could hear the sound of shouting just over the bridge that connected Last Light to the rest of the land.
"I'm putting a pause on story time." Tav apologised before standing up, slowly - but surely - making her way to the origin of the shouting.
"Hands where we can see them! Now!" One of the Harpers held her crossbow up, aiming it at another lady, who had a cloak hiding most of her face.
"I mean you all no harm! I simply need to find Halsin...and Tav." The lady's voice sounded familiar.
"Weapons down! Hear her out!" Halsin ordered, having followed along with Tav.
Before any words were spoken on behalf of the lady, she removed the hood of her cloak, revealing herself.
"K- Kagha?" Tav was shocked.
"I am truly sorry for appearing out of nowhere, but I have some bad news." Kagha exhaled, trying to keep herself warm.
"What is it? Is it the Grove? Is Francesca okay?" Halsin immediately started panicking.
"I'm afraid the Grove is no longer safe, Halsin. Francesca...she's in a coma." Kagha warned.
"What happened?!" Halsin's hands clenched into fists.
"The Shadow Druids happened." Kagha told as she, Halsin, and Tav returned to the inn. Jaheira gestured for all the children to go upstairs, while the three adults sat down to continue talking.
"Shadow Druids? As in, the three Shadow Druids - Olodan, Wren and Pinta - that we killed?" Tav furrowed her eyebrows.
"After I ceased the Rite of Thorns, I felt it was only fair to exile myself for a bit, clear my head. When I returned to the Grove, I was horrified to see that Shadow Druids had infested it, everyone remaining...being violently hurt. From what I heard, the Shadow Druids ambushed Francesca and put her in a coma." Kagha explained.
"If the Shadow Druids have taken over the Grove, we must go there and stop them!" Halsin insisted.
"There's more. Before I managed to sneak away, I overheard Olodan and Aelis talking. They plan to find and kill Tav." Kagha revealed.
"What? Why her? What's the point of going after Tav?" Halsin's hand wrapped around Tav's torso, comforting her.
"Before you were saved, Halsin, Tav uncovered the truth behind my insistence of exiling the Tieflings from the Grove. She caused the Shadow Druids to reveal themselves and she persuaded me to fight against them. They view her as the reason why their plans to take over the Grove failed. But, now that they have the Grove, they want revenge. I got out of there before I became a target." Kagha sat down, taking a glass of water that was offered to her by Jaheira.
"Do they know where we are?" Tav instinctively placed her hands on her stomach, understandably worried.
"As far as I know, your current whereabouts are unknown to them, but it won't take them long to find you. They have dozens, upon dozens of allies they will surely have dispersed to look for you." Kagha insisted.
"Wait, hold up, I want to know how Olodan and the rest of the Shadow Druids came back, since we killed them." Tav wondered.
"My assumption was that Aelis, the Shadow Archdruid, was behind Francesca's ambush." Kagha shrugged her shoulders.
"Aelis must have heard about their failed attempt to overtake the Grove and came to investigate, managing to ambush to Francesca. Aelis resurrected them to try and - successfully - take over the Grove." Halsin assumed.
"Okay, so, what's the plan? I mean, we can't just let the Shadow Druids roam freely." Tav asked, confused.
"We can't go and bring any combat to them, not without knowing their strengths and weaknesses." Kagha explained.
"But we can't just sat here and let them come to us. We have innocent lives to protect." Halsin crossed his arms, unsure.
"Astarion, we have to warn him." Tav's eyes widened as she glanced at Halsin.
"The vampire spawn will be just fine on his own." Kagha shook her head.
"No, he won't be. The Shadow Druids know about him. They know he's connected to me. They will try and use him to get to me." Tav insisted, now feeling extremely anxious.
"We do not know where he is, Tav. Therefore, the Shadow Druids will not either." Kagha determined.
"Well, we have to do something. We can't just sit around, waiting for an attack." Tav stood up, ready to prepare her spells and weapons.
"Kagha and I will figure something out. You need to stay here, and remain calm." Halsin gently stopped Tav from moving further than she had.
"Stay calm?! How can I stay calm when I now know that I have an army of Shadow Druids looking to kill me!" Tav glared at Halsin.
"Stress isn't good for the babies, my heart. You're in no shape to do any fighting of any sort." Halsin gazed at Tav, who let herself relax, realising that Halsin was right. Her stomach was huge, her agility and strength had weakened and she was short of breath, needing many moments just to keep breathing normally.
"There is still the issue of how we're- you're going to go up against them. Combined, there's you, Halsin, Jaheira, Minsc and maybe 10 Harpers." Tav looked at Kagha, who went to speak, before someone stood forward.
"Add me and the group of Flaming Fists, and you have yourself some more fighters." Wyll spoke up, a smile on his face.
"Wyll, I can't ask you to do this. You've already done so much for me." Tav shook her head.
"You're not asking me, Tav. I'm offering. You put your life in danger on several occasions to help me. Now let me return the favour." Wyll insisted, putting his hand on Tav's shoulder to comfort her.
"Okay. So, you, Halsin, Jaheira, Minsc, Wyll, plus 10 Harpers and 15 Flaming Fist Soldiers, that makes 30. Will that be enough?" Tav looked at Kagha.
"I saw at least 48 Shadow Druids within the Grove, plus another 10 or so guarding the entrance." Kagha told, making Tav feel slightly less relieved.
"How can Olodan, Wren, Pinta and Aelis have gathered so many allies?" Tav glanced between Halsin and Kagha.
"There are many Shadow Druids all over the Sword Coast. Most of them reside in or surrounding Cloak Wood, south of Baldur's Gate." Jaheira explained.
"We're going to need backup then." Wyll told, glancing at Tav.
"I'll contact them all. You all ready yourselves. Sooner or later, the Shadow Druids are bound to strike." Tav excused herself upstairs, preparing herself to contact all of her friends again for the first time in months.
Chapter 11: Unexpected backup
Summary:
Kagha isn't the only person who ran from the Shadow Druids.
Chapter Text
Tav couldn't sleep. Part of her restlessness came from her pregnancy, her large stomach making it difficult to fall asleep easily. The other part of her restlessness came from the looming threat on her life - and her life only.
She laid on her back, eyes glued to the roof above her. Her heart raced, adding to her inability to fall asleep. When her heart raced, her anxiety grew and became harder to stop. No matter what she thought about - from her future as a family with her babies, Halsin and Astarion, to seeing her friends again, her anxiety caused by the looming threat on her life overtook every positive thought.
Tav slowly sat up and moved off the bed, careful not to wake Halsin up. She walked from her and Halsin's room on the second floor of the inn, heading down the stairs nearby. She lit the firepit and spent a while staring at the flames, wrapping her arms around herself.
"Tav, my heart, are you alright?" Halsin stepped down onto the floor, catching Tav's attention.
"Did I wake you? I'm sorry." Tav apologised.
"I don't think any of us are sleeping right now." Halsin admitted, sitting down next to Tav.
"Just when I thought our life would be calm. The Absolute is gone. Our friends are on their own adventures. We have two children on the way. We're building our family. But, of course, the universe decided to throw another hiccup in our life." Tav exhaled, putting her head on his shoulder.
"I don't want you to be worried, Tav. None of us are going to let the Shadow Druids hurt you." Halsin insisted.
"I wrote letters to our friends. I'll get them sent off at sunrise." Tav nodded.
"We won't let the Shadow Druids lay a finger on you, Tav." Tav jumped hearing Arabella's voice behind her. She turned her head to see Arabella, Mol, Yenna, Mirkon, Mattis and Silfy standing nearby.
"How-?" Tav furrowed her eyebrows.
"Your conversation with Kagha and Jaheira wasn't exactly quiet." Arabella shrugged her shoulders.
"What you heard, it's not for you to worry about. Let us handle it." Tav insisted, watching as the children sat down.
"You saved us, all of us. The least we can do is help save you from the Shadow Druids." Silfy spoke up, a small smile on her face.
"How about, we all go to bed, and we can talk about this later?" Tav offered, giving a hug to all the children, who eventually agreed. Halsin left Tav to enjoy the warmth of the fire while he helped the children back to their rooms, tucking them all back into bed.
When he returned, he gently lifted Tav from her seat near the fire and used Ray of Frost to extinguish the fire.
"I'm not tired, Halsin." Tav whined.
"You need as much rest as possible before the babies are born. Neither of us will get much sleep during the first few months once the babies arrive." Halsin insisted, gently putting Tav back in bed, tucking her in like he had with the children.
"I guess you're right." Tav eventually agreed.
"Goodnight, my love." Tav placed a gentle kiss on Halsin's lips before moving a bit to get comfortable before forcing herself asleep.
———
7 hours later, Tav was up bright and early, handing a pile of envelopes to one of the Flaming Fist Soldiers who had agreed to get the letters to their intended destination as soon as possible, although Tav knew the task would be difficult, considering she knew that only Gale's location was known - Waterdeep. As for Lae'zel, Karlach, Shadowheart and Astarion, they were all over the place.
Lae'zel was with Orpheus, both determined to end Vlaakith's reign of terror after a betrayal revealed by the Emperor. Shadowheart was with her parents, living a secluded life they all wanted and deserved, although still dealing with the pain caused by Shar. Karlach was somewhere, getting used to her new life as a Mind flayer. Astarion was travelling on his own, enjoying his new found - somewhat restrictive - life as a free vampire spawn, no longer being influenced by Cazador.
As Tav watched the Flaming Fist Soldier ride away on his horse, she noticed a group of people hastily making their way in her direction. She recognised some of them, a few Druids - Jeorna, Mino, Inwe - and some Tieflings - Zorru, Elgis, Arka. The other Tieflings and Druids with them were ones Tav had seen glimpses of, but never talked to.
"Halsin! Kagha!" Tav called out behind her, watching as Halsin and Kagha ran outside the inn, suddenly seeing the same group that Tav had.
"Halsin, Kagha! Thank the Gods!" Jeorna let out a sigh of relief as she and the group stopped near Tav.
"You all look terrified! What happened?" Kagha questioned, confused.
"We escaped. The Shadow Druids tried to stop us, but we got away. Others weren't so lucky." Arka shook her head.
"Francesca woke up from her coma, but as soon as she did, they started torturing her, trying to gather intel on our location." Zorru spoke up, gesturing to himself and the other Tieflings.
"Why?" Tav asked.
"The whole point of the Rite of Thorns was to close off the Grove from outsiders, like the Tieflings. They figured that the Tieflings would try to find you and warn you of their uprising." Mino explained.
"You didn't say anything to them?" Tav worried.
"No. Everyone who knew where to start looking for you managed to escape before they were attacked." Jeorna clarified.
"How did you guys know to come here?" Kagha asked.
"When we escaped, we ran as far and as fast as we could. On our way, we found the Tieflings trying to stealth their way past some patrolling Shadow Druids. With a little help, we all got to safety. Arka suggested that we head to Baldur's Gate, but as we came up the road, we saw that Moonrise was different, better. So we hoped that maybe someone was here and...here you guys are. Thank the Gods." Jeorna told.
"Let's get everyone inside." Tav gestured to the inn, watching as the large group of people moved with Kagha and Halsin inside.
Scratch and Cub kept the children occupied. Some of the Druids and Tieflings were guided upstairs to empty rooms by Jaheira and Minsc. Jeorna, Mino, Inwe, Zorru, Elgis and Arka stayed downstairs with Tav, Halsin and Kagha.
"How do we stop them? I mean, there's half an army alongside Olodan, Wren, Pinta and Aelis, and another half searching the whole of Faerûn to find you." Jeorna looked to Tav, who shrugged her shoulders.
"We kill the core leaders. Send the others scampering away in fear." Zorru suggested.
"That sounds like a good plan." Kagha agreed.
"Easier said than done, Zorru. Last time we were face to face with Olodan, Wren and Pinta, we killed them, but Aelis resurrected them. Our best bet is to kill every Shadow Druid, not just the core 4." Tav gave a better suggestion.
"Tav is right. The Shadow Druids are like roaches. We kill 4, and another 8 pop up in their place." Halsin agreed with Tav.
"So we kill every Shadow Druid that exists within Faerûn. That'll be easy." Arka sarcastically replied, rolling her eyes.
"We have allies who will help. Wyll and the 15 Flaming Fist Soldiers he brought to help restore Moonrise Towers, Jaheira, Minsc, the 10 Harpers." Halsin glared at Arka.
"Plus Gale, Lae'zel, Shadowheart, and Karlach...if they're willing to come back here." Tav mentioned.
"You helped each of them through the troubles in their lives. I have no doubt that they will come back to help." Halsin reassured Tav, who nodded, trying to keep calm.
"Add us Druids to the list of allies. You saved Faerûn from a life of slavery under the Absolute." Mino smiled.
"Also add us Tieflings to the list. If it weren't for your investigating, Kagha would've succeeded in completing the Rite of Thorns, exiling us from the Grove, leaving us defenceless against the goblins." Zorru insisted.
"We'll have a big enough army to take down the Shadow Druids soon." Jaheira smiled.
"How about we let you rest, my heart? We can come up with a plan and await a response from our friends while you get some - well deserved - sleep." Halsin offered.
"But, it's still early in the morning. We've still got a whole day ahead of us." Tav shook her head.
"Get all the rest you need. Your body and your mind will thank you for it later." Kagha insisted as she gestured to Tav's baby bump, finally convincing her.
"If anything happens, please, wake me." Tav glanced between Jaheira and Halsin, both of whom nodded.
With a slightly worried heart, Tav made her way upstairs, using a special key to unlock hers and Halsin's room. The moment her body touched the bed, she sunk deep, letting the warmth of the bed, the blanket and the pillow cuddle her, like a hug. With each breath she let in and out of her lungs, Tav reminded herself that she was surrounded by friends, by one of her two lovers.
She assured herself that everything was going to be okay. She had gone up against the Chosen of Myrkul - Ketheric Thorm, the Chosen of Bane - Enver Gortash, the Chosen of Bhaal - Orin the Red and the Elder Brain - empowered by the ancient Crown of Karsus, and lived to tell the tale (although she had been interrupted while trying to tell the final part of the story - the adventures in Baldur's Gate).
If anyone would be able to survive an attack from the Shadow Druids, she would.
Chapter 12: Paranoia
Summary:
Tav can't stop herself from feeling paranoid.
Chapter Text
Light snoring enveloped the inn. Tav was asleep in her and Halsin's shared room. Jeorna, Mino, Inwe, Elgis, Zorru and Arka were with Kagha and Jaheira were in the top floor of the Reithwin Tollhouse, going over every possible weapon they'd need for when the Shadow Druid's eventually attacked. Halsin was with Wyll, transporting some of the grown crops from the farm nearby Last Light to the tavern's basement storage area. A lot of the rooms within Last Light were occupied by resting Druids and Tieflings who didn't fare well during the journey to Moonrise Towers. The children were with Minsc, learning some helpful combat tips. The Flaming Fist Soldiers and the Harpers had split up to patrol, half of them around the sign that marked the road to Baldur's Gate, the other half over the bridge near Last Light.
One Tiefling in particular remained in her bed until she knew that no one else was around. Getting up from the bed she occupied, she checked the other nearby rooms to make sure the other travellers were asleep. Making sure not to wake anyone up, the Tiefling stepped carefully on the wooden floor, hoping to avoid any creaking that would occur when old wooden floorboards endured a little too much pressure. The Tiefling stopped walking when she reached a specific door. On the front was a sign, two letters: H + T. The Tiefling figured that the room belonged to Halsin and Tav.
She reached for the doorknob, turning it until the door was able to be pushed open. When the occupants of the room showed no signs of waking up, the Tiefling walked inside, eyeing Tav as she slept. Her gaze flickered from Tav’s face to her stomach, which was very visible underneath the blanket covering her body. As she got closer to Tav, her finger gently grazed over the blanket, almost tracing the outline of Tav's sleeping body. The Tiefling stopped as soon as Tav moved her hand from her side to the top of her stomach. Before she could be caught, the Tiefling hastily exited the room, shutting the door with caution. Soon enough, the Tiefling was outside the inn, eyeing her surroundings. She noted the sign that said 'Welcome to the Last Light Inn'. She made a mental picture of the closest building to the inn.
"Are you alright? You look a little lost." The Tiefling jumped a little when a small child's voice caught her attention.
"I'm all good. I just needed a some air. Thank you." The Tiefling explained, watching as the child seemingly accepted this answer before walking off.
Before the Tiefling could be stopped for any more conversations, she made her way back inside, heading to the room she had been assigned by Jaheira. She got back into bed and pretended like she had been there the whole time.
———
"I will carve those little babies out of your stomach and make you watch while you bleed to death as I stick a knife through their hearts." Aelis threatened as they choked Tav.
Tav shot up from her nightmare, breathing heavily as she felt her throat for any signs of damage. When she clocked her surroundings, Tav closed her eyes and took a moment to slow her breathing, her hand immediately going to her stomach. She was okay. Her babies were okay. Feeling a bit peckish, Tav got out of bed and chucked one of Halsin's coats on, exiting her room. She knocked on other doors, offering food and drinks to anyone who was a bit hungry or thirsty. She was glad to see that a lot of the Druids and Tieflings had taken her up on her offer and walked with her to the tavern where Wyll had taken it upon himself to make a banquet of sorts, filled with all sorts of food.
Soon enough, the entire tavern was full of chatter, food being eaten and laughter. Some were discussing childhood stories. Some were discussing hopes for the future. Others remained silent, still trying to recover from their escape from the Shadow Druids. The entire time Tav was sat at one of the tables, she couldn't help but feel a bit weird, as if someone was watching her. When she turned to glance around at the full tavern, everyone was engaging in banter of some sort.
"Tav, are you alright? You look like you've seen a ghost." Wyll noted as he sat down next to Tav, a full plate of food in front of him.
"I...I have this feeling, like I'm being watched." Tav admitted.
"I wouldn't blame you, considering your current situation. Although, I believe it's just a motherly instinct of sorts. You're constantly worried because your body is a home to two babies who are growing." Wyll gave a possible explanation.
"Yeah, maybe." Tav agreed, trying to shake her paranoia.
———
A day after the Druids and Tieflings had come to Moonrise Towers for refuge, Tav still couldn't shake her paranoia. She couldn't help but look all around her every few minutes just to calm her anxious mind. She had been too distracted with her paranoia to notice a certain Wizard had arrived, just over the bridge.
"There she is! My favourite hero of Baldur's Gate!" Gale greeted Tav, who snapped out of her glances at her surroundings.
"Gale! You're here!" Tav immediately greeted him back, embracing in a slightly awkward hug, considering her stomach was sort of in the way.
"Of course I am. When I received your letter, I wasted no time travelling here. I feared that if I didn't leave Waterdeep as soon as possible, you might've been attacked!" Gale nodded.
"I'm so glad you're here." Tav smiled.
"You're looking good, my dear friend. How is your baby doing?" Gale asked, gesturing to her stomach.
"Actually, it's babies. Twins." Tav clarified, chuckling as the surprised look on Gale's face.
"Wow." He was pleasantly surprised.
Soon enough, Gale was being whisked away by Halsin and Wyll who wanted to catch up with him. Meanwhile, a Tiefling walked up to Tav, holding a few envelopes.
"Sorry to disturb you, but a Flaming Fist Solder told me to bring these to you. He said that they were replies from your friends." The Tiefling handed the envelopes to Tav, who thanked her for delivering the envelopes. Tav opened the envelopes and read the letters within them.
"Is it good news, or bad?" The Tiefling asked, curious. She watched as Tav finished reading the last letter, a huge smile on her face.
"Very good news. I don't know how the letters got to my friends so quick, but they are on their way. They'll be here in a day or two." Tav told.
"Oh, that's great! Shall I go get Halsin so you can tell him the news?" The Tiefling offered.
"If you don't mind?" Tav asked.
The Tiefling quickly ran to find Halsin, telling him that Tav had something to tell him. Soon enough, Halsin was heading to Tav, leaving the Tiefling alone. She walked back into the inn, finding a piece of paper and a quill. She walked up to her room and sat down at the small desk, beginning to write. Once the letter was written, the Tiefling opened the window and whistled, watching as a raven flew closer and landed on the windowsill.
"Fly fast. Do not delay this letter delivery." The Tiefling nodded as she put the envelope with the letter inside the raven's mouth. The raven quickly flew off. She closed the window, putting the quill and ink away.
Chapter 13: A family reunited
Summary:
The family that was built by Tav is reunited.
Chapter Text
Tav's paranoia hadn't subsided. If anything, over the following few days, the feeling of being watched became worse. She had to peer into every room before entering, just to be sure no one was going to ambush her. She tried reassuring herself many times, purely to keep herself from stressing too much.
A few days later, Shadowheart, Lae'zel, Astarion, and Karlach arrived at Moonrise Towers. Shadowheart and Lae'zel arrived together, immediately surprised by Tav's large stomach. They were both amazed to learn that Tav and Halsin were going to have twins.
Astarion arrived next, immediately being greeting with loving hugs by Halsin and Tav. He handed both of them a gift from his travels. Tav was given a shirt and pants that were custom made for after she gave birth. Halsin was given a set of wooden animals that he could use to entertain the babies when they were toddlers.
Karlach was the last to arrive. Astarion, Shadowheart and Lae'zel remained quiet when they watched Karlach stop right behind Tav.
"Hi soldier. You're glowing and absolutely beautiful." Karlach made herself known, causing Tav to turn around. She couldn't've ever expected what she saw - Karlach, back to her old self. Her red skin was covered by clothes designed for combat, with armour that could make any enemy run scared. The only difference with her hair came in the form of a singular braid that rested on Karlach's shoulder. Two giant axes were held against her back for easy access.
"H- How is this possible? I thought that becoming a Mind flayer was permanent." Tav almost broke down into tears of happiness, not hesitating to wrap Karlach in a hug.
"Ask Gale. If it wasn't for him, I'd still be an illithid." Karlach gestured to Gale, who smiled.
"What did you do? How did you do it?" Tav turned to Gale.
"It was simple, to be honest. All I did was ask Mystra. I explained to her that if it wasn't for Karlach's brave sacrifice, I wouldn't've been able to retrieve the Crown of Karsus and return it to her." Gale explained.
"So, what? She turned Karlach back to normal?" Tav wiped some tears from her cheeks.
"She did, yes. She also gave Karlach a spell that could take her to and from Avernus whenever she pleases." Gale added.
"Unfortunately there are some things that Mystra can't fix, like my engine. She understood that I never wanted to permanently return to Avernus, so she gave me a compromise. I can teleport between Faeurn and Avernus as much as I like." Karlach smiled.
"I'm just glad that my babies will get to meet their fiery aunt Karlach." Tav hugged Karlach once more.
"Now that we're all here, how about we eat some food, huh? We can catch up a little before getting down to why you're all here." Halsin offered, gesturing to the tavern.
"Tav and I will join you momentarily. I'd like to give my love a more personal greeting." Astarion winked, watching as Shadowheart, Gale, Wyll, Lae'zel, and Karlach rolled their eyes, while Halsin simply chuckled.
They walked to the tavern while Tav and Astarion sat down on a nearby log.
"I've missed you, so much, Astarion. I couldn't wait for the day you returned." Tav smiled, putting her head on his shoulder.
"I missed you too, my dear. I spent every day wondering how you and Halsin were doing." Astarion's left hand held Tav's right hand, while his right hand rested gently against Tav's stomach.
"Growing twins has been different, but Halsin was keeping himself busy, as always. We've spent most of our time here remodelling and redecorating. Of course, Halsin puts my health and safety before everything." Tav smiled.
"You'd be insane not to. You're pregnant, and not just with one baby, but with two, Tav. It would honestly surprise me if Halsin had been relaxed and carefree." Astarion chuckled.
"I'm just glad you're here. I'm sorry for ending your travelling early with the letter." Tav apologised.
"To be quite honest, I skimmed your letter. I saw the words 'killed', 'Shadow' and 'Druids'. I didn't finish the letter before knowing that I needed to return as soon as possible. But, my, my. Darling, you have yourself quite the problem. Pesky Shadow Druids. Never favoured them, roaches." Astarion scoffed as he and Tav sat down to catch up.
"You saw three words and came to my rescue?" Tav smiled, holding his hand in hers.
"Of course I did. I love you and your babies too much to let anything happen. I would rather let Cazador re-carve the infernal contract on my back than let you or your babies get hurt." Astarion nodded.
"You've become too sentimental." Tav smirked.
"What can I say, darling? You've had a whole lot of influence on me...mostly good." He chuckled.
"Whatever you say, Astarion. Shall we go and join our friends?" Tav placed a gentle kiss to Astarion's lips before standing up.
"We shall." He nodded, standing up to walk with Tav to the tavern.
———
For 3 hours, Tav, Astarion, Halsin, Wyll, Jaheira, Gale, Minsc, Shadowheart, Lae'zel and Karlach sat in the tavern catching up. Everyone got their chance to tell the group what they had been up to.
Karlach was glad to know that when she returned to Avernus, Wyll would return with her, and they could come back whenever they wanted to.
Lae'zel and Orpheus had spent weeks fighting back against Vlaakith, gathering thousands of Githyanki to join their cause.
Gale had been enjoying his time as a professor at Blackstaff Academy, teaching young students in the ways of Illusion magic.
Shadowheart and her parents had settled down, finding a calm little house that they turned into their home.
Astarion recounted his nighttime adventures travelling alone, and - as promised - he gave Halsin and Tav their own tokens from his travels.
"Halsin! Halsin! Come quickly!" One of the Druids ran into the tavern, his face laced with terror and fear.
Immediately stopping their gathering, the group was led a few miles outside Last Light Inn, being greeted to a horrific sight.
"Is that...?" Shadowheart was confused, seeing Kagha's dead body sprawled out along the path. A massive puddle of blood surrounded her stomach, which had been eviscerated.
"Kagha." Halsin's eyes widened as he inspected her body.
"Such a waste of perfectly good blood." Astarion mumbled. Tav nudged his shoulder, having heard his comment.
"Who did this to her?" Gale asked, confused,
"It has to have been the Shadow Druids. They want to kill me, sure, but Kagha's the one who turned against them." Tav spoke up.
"This was a warning. They want us to know that they can attack at any time." Halsin exhaled, giving instructions to some of the Flaming Fists before leading everyone back to the tavern.
