Starting Over

Summary:

Amity and Willow find a quiet moment amidst the chaos of Hexside to have an honest conversation about their past and present friendship.

Work Text:

It hadn’t been that long since Adrian and the Emperor’s Coven tried to brand all the students at Hexside so things were pretty hectic, especially after Hunter told everyone the truth about the Day of Unity, but Amity still managed to find a brief moment of peace in the busy corridors of Hexside. She remembered that Willow liked to spend her alone time in the  school greenhouse, so she headed there, feeling a combination of nervousness and determination.

When she pushed the door open, she saw Willow taking care of a line of magical flowers.

"Hey, Willow," Amity began tentatively.

Willow looked up, surprised but not unwelcoming. "Amity? What brings you here?"

"I... I wanted to talk," Amity admitted, her voice softer than usual. "About everything."

Willow set down her watering can, giving Amity her full attention.

"I need to apologize," Amity continued, her words carefully chosen. "For being so needlessly protective, for not seeing how strong you were… and for… everything I did to you after we stopped being friends."

Willow glanced downwards for a moment, a look of sorrow on her face, then shifted her gaze back up to Amity. "It wasn't all you, Amity. Your Mom… I know she forced you to make me leave your party and to stop hanging out with me, remember? She blackmailed you to do it.”

Amity winced, guilt tightening her chest. "I know, but I still did it. I still hurt you. And I understand if you haven't fully forgiven me yet."

Willow sighed softly. “Well… I admit. I can’t say that I have really…” she confessed. Amity gazed down with a heavy heart, even though it pained her to hear those words, she understood she couldn't hold it against Willow, as she hadn't completely forgiven herself either. “I mean… it’s been years , Amity. And… that’s just so much time. But I have been trying. Like I don't mind being around you, and I hate seeing you get hurt."

Amity smiled a little. “Thanks.”

“And of course… I’m happy you and Luz are finally dating.” Willow expressed with a warm smile.

“Yeah?” Amity asked, touched.

Willow nodded. “Yeah. I’ve been rooting for you two, you know.”

“You have?” Amity responded, sounding a little surprised.

Once again, Willow nodded. “Hmm-mmm. To be honest I… kinda had a feeling that the two of them liked each other for a while…”

“Really? For how long?” Amity asked, both surprised and curious.

“Well, for you… I knew you had a crush on Luz since that Grudgby game we had against Boscha.” Willow confessed.

“That long?!” Amity commented in surprise as her cheeks turned red.

“Yeah… You weren’t exactly subtle.” Willow pointed out with a teasing smirk that made Amity blush more. “Luckily is kind of a bonehead when it comes to picking up on those things. And I believe I noticed her starting to develop feelings for you after you rescued her from your Mom, though I don’t think you yourself realized it, did you?”

Amity widened her eyes, stunned. “No… No, I didn’t…” she admitted.

The bespectacled girl giggled a little. “I had a feeling.”

"Luz..." Amity muttered before she sighed lovingly as she began to think about her girlfriend, which made her cheeks turn red. "She’s just… so amazing, you know? She makes me happier than I ever thought I could be. Constantly obeying my Mom, surrounding myself with people I knew were bad, it made me so miserable that I took it out on everyone. I thought if I went along with what she wanted then it would be easier, that I’d be happy and actually want what she wanted. But… I never did. She saved me from being like my Mom. If it weren’t for her, I honestly don’t know what would’ve happened to me. Well… maybe I do … And frankly, the person I could have been… scares me. But now… Now I can be who I want to be. Thanks to Luz. I owe her everything ."

Willow's eyes softened as she smiled. "I get it. Luz changed everything for me, too. Before she came to the Demon Realm, I had such a low opinion of myself that I actually started to believe all the mean things people said about me. Even though I accidentally hurt her and used her to cheat, Luz still wanted to be friends with me anyway, she actually said I was one of the strongest witches she knew. It’s thanks to her that I’m in a track I love and I’m confident enough to stand up to people like Boscha too,” she said before turning to Amity and speaking with complete sincerity. “Most of all… it’s thanks to her that I have my friend back.”

“Your… friend? You mean…?” Amity whispered in astonishment as Willow gave a nod. Amity's eyes welled up with tears as she smiled.

“That girl has no idea how much she means to people.” Willow commented softly.

"She sure doesn’t. Oh! I almost forgot!” Amity realized. “It’s thanks to her that you met Hunter, too.”

Willow chuckled lightly, a blush rising in her cheeks. "Yeah, I guess that's true."

Amity raised a brow and smirked, "Hmm. You like him, don't you?" she teased gently.

Willow shoved her playfully, cheeks reddening. “Amity!”

Amity giggled a little, then took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "I know I still have a long way to go," she said, her voice steady but sincere. "But I just want you to know… all the time we were apart… I missed you, Willow."

Willow's eyes softened, and without a word, she stepped forward and wrapped Amity in a warm embrace. "I've missed you too, Amity," she admitted, her voice thick with emotion. When she and Amity pulled apart, she lowered her head a little. "Listen, we can't just go back to being best friends like we were before… But we can start over and work our way back up to it."

Amity felt a weight lift off her shoulders and nodded before she extended her hand with a smile. "Hi, I'm Amity Blight. It's nice to meet you."

Willow's smile mirrored Amity's as she took her hand and shook it firmly. "Willow Park. Nice to meet you too."

With their hands still clasped, Amity nodded towards the door. "Come on, let's rejoin the others."

Willow agreed, and together, they walked out of the greenhouse, hand in hand, ready to face the future as reconciled friends.
