Work Text:

Today would be the best day ever in Abigail's (hopefully) short life.

Why, you might ask?

Because today was the day she got to choose her mate as the head alpha in her pack.

Her parents weren't alive, or in the region at least, so Abigail had spent her whole life raised by mentors trying to teach her the ways of a leader. She wasn't always confident in her skills, but Eva always reassured her that she would do great, one of the reasons she chose Eva to propose to.

Eva was way too nice to her, like way too nice, I mean, come on, Abigail was definitely nowhere near as perfect as the Omega made her out to be! Nonetheless, Abigail accepted the praise and continued her day feeling a little better each time.

She could feel better all the time after she proposed today.

Oh yeah, she was supposed to be getting ready for the proposal, not reminiscing.

Abigail rolled her eyes at herself in the mirror and continued to detangle her thick hair, a major struggle in her life.

She persisted and finally finished doing her routine after 30 minutes, pratically record timing for her, probably since she was so excited for the later events.

She walked out of her room to see one of her mentors, Atsushi, cooking breakfast.

Abigail walked over to the kitchen and peeked from behind Atsushi to see that he was cooking K BBQ, her absolute favorite thing in the world.(Behind Eva, though, of course.)

"YES, SO SIGMA! I DIDNT THINK YOUD MAKE A SPECIAL MEALL TOO!!" The girl screamed in excitement. She ran to her seat at the dining table, making Atsushi laugh.

"Calm down, it's just food!"

"You CANNOT be talking, I've seen how you get around chazuke!" She defended.

Atsushi laughed and shook his head as he finished up making the food, making 3 plates, the third one for her other main mentor, Dazai.

When he brought over the food, Abigail JUMPED at her plate and immediately starting devouring it like the big back her friends claimed she was. It wasn't her fault the barbecue was so addicting, she swore to them.

As she finished the plate 1 minute later, Dazai finnally came out of his room, still in pajamas.

He yawned and sat down across from the alpha, laying his head down on the table.

"I don't get why I need to wake up so early even though you're doing all the work, you're lucky this is important enough to me!" Her mentor whined. Atsushi and her looked at eachother and sighed, continuing to eat.

After Abigail had God knows how many portions of K BBQ, she cleaned up her plate and put on her sneaker so she could go outside. It was FINALLY time to go out and find Eva.

She felt giddy the whole time, already fantasizing about their life as leaders of the pack. She was REALLY excited, and everyone in the house could tell.

Atsushi pulled her aside as she was about to walk out the door and said, "Uhm, Abigail, you know that if Eva rejects you it'll be fine? There's lots of other capable omegas here..."

Abigail scoffed and continued walking, saying, "Like I need to know that! I'm sure Eva will accept!"

Atsushi sighed as he watched the alpha walk out. He knew she would be absolutely brocken when she came back to the house.

Eva had confinded in Atsushi that she didn't LIKE Abigail and wanted to stay best friends, that she had picked up on the signs when she had asked Abigail about picking her mate since her alpha ceremony was coming up. Atsushi was glad Eva felt okay telling him that, but it conflicted with his relationship with Abigail when the alpha ranted about Eva to him.

He had ultimately decided to not get involved in it and let Abigail propose to her. After all, heartbreak was a natural thing that happend to many.

Abigail ran to the lake in the forest, a common hangout spot for Eva and Abigail. Abigail had asked Eva to hang out there earlier in the week, and Eva said yes, even though she knew it was her day to choose a mate.

She was pretty sure Eva thought she would finally reveal who she was choosing then leave to go propose, but she had actually set up a cute picnic beside the lake for after she proposed right there.

There was 10 minutes left until Eva was supposed to arrive as she came up to the lake. She looked around just in case Eva had came early but once she saw the coast was clear...Well, except for the rabid omega, Anja, about 30 feet away, mewing...Yeah, Abigail just ignored that and put down some food.

She waited until Eva arrived, her tail wagging as she held a bouquet of flowers. She had carefully chosen out Alstroemeria, Asters, and some Iris flowers, all different flowers representing love and more.

It was a little pricey, but it was worth it since it was for Eva. She spent a couple minutes just smiling the flower until she heard some...weird noises.

Her ears perked up and she looked around, yet again, and this time saw Leah and Genesis...making out. Okay, yeah. She really should've chose a different location for the proposal. Hopefully Eva didn't run into any of the others and get weirded out too.

She started stress eating some K BBQ out of the picnic basket as her watch ticked to show one minute until Eva would arrive.

The alphas ears perked up again, but this time she heard footsteps, Eva's footsteps! Don't ask why she knew her footstep pattern.

She closed the picnic basket and stopped eating, checking to make sure no sauce was around her mouth, then she patently (not) waited for Eva to get closer so she could start talking.

She swayed side to side in anxiety and almost squealed as Eva finally stood in front of her.

Eva scanned the decor and looked at the flowers in Abigail's hand, letting out a sigh, but Abigail didn't notice of course.

"Uhm...Blud, why is their fancy decor here???"

"Okay, uhm, so! It's cause yknow how I wouldn't tell you who I'm choosing to be my mate? Well, it's because I actually am proposing to you! I tried dropping some hints and I was pretty sure you also liked me! So, Eva, do you want to lead the pack with me as my omega?"

Abigail smiled and waited with anticipation for Eva's response but was confused when she saw Eva sigh and close her eyes.

"Abigail...I don't love you. I like you platonically, no matter how many I love yours we've shared." Eva said carefully. She continued on with, "I could tell that you've liked me, and...I'm sorry. I understand how you might be feeling right now but I just can't force myself to like you back. I just don't want that type of responsibility either."

The omega tried to give a sympathetic look but all Abigail could focus on was the pounding of her heart. The rush of emotions fading away. The realization that she really didn't know Eva's emotions.

Her mouth dried and she gave a nod in response to the rejection. Eva sighed again and looked away from Abigail.

Abigail felt like 𝓪 𝓫𝓻𝓸𝓬𝓴𝓮𝓷 𝓪𝓵𝓹𝓱𝓪🐺💔 now.

The now 𝓫𝓻𝓸𝓬𝓴𝓮𝓷 𝓪𝓵𝓹𝓱𝓪 turned from Eva and ran back home, tears forming in her eyes. Eva let her go yet watched as the alpha ran, trying to sympathize.

Abigail barged through the door after her house and didn't pause for a second until she was able to lock herself in her room.

She tried to focus on her breathing and calm down. It was just a rejection...Atsushi had warned her about this but she was too sure for it at the time. Now she wish she had listened.

Atsushi knocking on her door snapped her out of her panicked thoughts. She let out a chocked, "Don't come in."

Atsushi had a look of concern on his face as he responded, "I need to come in, I saw you running in."

Abigail unlocked the door and returned to her bed.

Atsushi let out a sigh of relief and opened the door to comfort Abigail. He sat on the bed next to Abigail and hugged her, letting tears stain his shirt.

Dazai was...somewhere, probably lying in another river, also staining his shirt. Oh well, no one cared about that guys ahh.

Anyways, Atsushi rubbed comforting circles into her back, letting her cry instead of talking. Once she calmed down, Atsushi asked, "So, tell me what happened."

"Well, if it wasn't obvious, I got rejected. It's just- Ugh, I feel so 𝓫𝓻𝓸𝓬𝓴𝓮𝓷! I was so confident she'd say yes..."

Atsushi tried to think of a response but it was hard when he was already aware that his "daughter" would get rejected. He ended up just continuing to let her talk.

"I set up decorations and everything and now I just feel dumb. There's no one else I'd want by my side!"

"Abigail, there's a lot of other people that can lead with you, even if you did only want Eva. You'll have to choose someone, you know?"

Abigail huffed and removed herself from Atsushi's hug.

"Whatever.."

Atsushi sighed and got up from the bed, leaving Abigail to her thoughts.

Abigail was stubborn. Too stubborn.

It was the day of her alpha ceremony and she still hadn't chosen another omega to be with.

Atsushi had tried and show her even better suitors than Eva, but Abigail refused every one, and Atsushi couldn't forcibly marry her to anyone since she was a legal adult.

She walked up to the stage, no omega in sight with her. Some audience members that were older were confused, it had always been a tradition to have the head omega go up too, but the non traditional ones assumed they just were in the audience too. Luckily, the old traditional members didn't have too many complaints about the change, most just whispered between themselves.

"And now I present our new leader, Abigail!"

The crowd clapped but it was a little quieter than usual...They had always announced the leaders mate too, but they hadn't this time?

Abigail accepted the crown anyways and bowed to the crowd.

Once she walked off stage, she came up to Atsushi and smiled.

"I told you I'd be fine! I'm not going to continue looking for a mate, so no need to try and find even more people!"

Atsushi gave her a look but let her walk past to her home now. A lonely one.

It looked like she would always be lonely and broken.
