Bite Size

Summary:

Hamber told them he had a big announcement and Amethio can hardly wait to find out what it is. What kind of surprise could be in store for him and his brother?

Notes:

Just a quick little fic with these two being brothers because I love this little headcanon I've built. Plus this piece had cute little Explorer beans, what's no to love.

Note: Amethio is five here and Sidian is eight.

Work Text:

Amethio sat in the living room alongside his brother, them ending up on separate sides of the soft, velvet couch. If Sidian was going to be a butt head, then he had to suffer the consequences of his actions. He’ll think twice before trying to scoop him up again, especially after a headbutt like that.

Despite the small amount of tension, there was still excitement in the air. Hamber had told them that he had big news for them. Amethio had no idea what that meant but he was practically bouncing thinking of the possibilities. Maybe Father had finally come back after all this time away.

Amethio stole a quick glance at his brother to see him equally lost in thought, vibrating impatiently in his seat. Seems like they both had no idea what was going on. At some point Sidian had also looked up from the couch, locking eyes with Amethio. In a singular moment of brotherly understanding, they seemed to agree with each other to not fight during the announcement. The younger boy sighed a relieved sigh to himself. At least for one day he wouldn’t have to put up with anymore of his brother’s antics.

The moment was broken when the door quietly creaked open. Hamber walked in holding a mysterious case, which he set down on the table in front of the boys. “Good. It seems you’ve both managed to make it here on time,” he said. He then narrowed his eyes at Sidian. “For once.”

Sidian just responded by blowing a raspberry. Hamber shook his head. “Either way,” he continued. “I believe you both are curious as to why you’ve been summoned here?” The two boys nodded their heads. “Well, it seems after much discussion between them, your father and your grandfather have decided it's time for you to receive a very special gift.”

A gift? Amethio gasped and leaned forward in anticipation, nearly falling off of the couch in the process. What sort of gift would they be receiving? It had to be amazing if even Grandfather approved of it. A brief glance over told him his brother was just as excited as he was.

Hamber chuckled softly and opened the briefcase he had set on the table. Time seemed to slow down just a little as the case slowly creeped open. Eventually, Amethio could get a look of what was on the inside made him squeal in pure joy.

“Pokéballs!” Sidian shouted, a rare smile gracing his face. “We’re getting Pokémon!?”

“Indeed,” Hamber said, taking the two pokéballs into his hands. “It has been decided that the two of you shall begin your training to become Pokémon trainers. These Pokémon have been selected for you based on your unique personality traits. Do try to take good care of them.”

Amethio eagerly grabbed the ball as it was presented to him, just staring at it in pure, unfiltered glee as he waited for Sidian to do the same. Just what kind of Pokémon would be waiting for him? He could hardly wait to find out. “You may release your partners now,” the old man said.

Amethio did not hesitate. The flash of the ball opening briefly blinded him but he pushed past it to see his new companion. What he saw was a small, black and red Pokémon that appeared to be cloaked in flame. It lifted its head to look back at the boy. Looking into its eyes, he could see a flame of passion, almost like it was ready to fight at a moment’s notice. Amethio felt his heart rate increase the longer he stared. It was sort of exciting. “What kind of Pokémon is this?” he asked without looking away.

“His name is Charcadet, a fire type,” Hamber explained. “These Pokémon can be quite active, playful, and spirited. His flames can be quite hot and he has quite a bit of potential, but his path depends on you.”

“Whoa,” was all the boy could say. His Pokémon sounded really tough and cool, just like him.

“I don’t think my Pokémon is like that,” he heard Sidian say.

Amethio glanced over to see that his brother had received a small rock Pokémon that looked like it was made partially out of salt. The little rock didn't seem to show much emotion at all, just sitting there on the table motionless.

“I think it's broken. It hasn’t really moved since I brought it out,” Sidian complained.

“That’s because she’s a Nacli. She’s a rock type Pokémon born from the earth. Quite sturdy, although that means she’s the slow and steady type. Not much in the way of flair,” Hamber responded. If Amethio could see his eyes he could swear he’d be rolling them.

“I see,” Sidian said before turning towards Nacli. “Guess that means you’re kinda boring.”

Hamber shook his head. “Don’t scoff at the gift provided for you by your grandfather. At least try to show some gratitude.”

“I wasn’t,” the older boy mumbled. “I was just saying. You're the one who made it sound like she has no potential.”

“Enough back talk,” Hamber warned. “Why don’t you go to your room to be alone with Nacli.”

“Whatever,” Sidian grumbled as he pushed himself off the couch. He looked back to Nacli and said, “Let’s go.”

She bounced off the couch to follow him, slowly dragging herself across the floor. When Sidian realized she wasn’t behind him, he turned around yet again to go and scoop her up. “Not very mobile are you?” he mused before leaving the room for good.

That left Amethio and Hamber in the living room with Charcadet. Amethio reached out to pat the Pokémon, but he just backed away. He frowned, but perked up a little when Hamber placed a hand on his shoulder. “You shouldn’t expect to be friends right away,” the old man said. “You have to get to know each other first. Why don’t we go down the battlefields? You’ll have plenty of room to play together there. I can even supervise, if you want.”

“Okay,” the boy said as he scooted off the couch.

As they walked down to the field, he smiled to himself. Today was the beginning of something huge for him, he just knew it. And with his new partner by his side, he knew everything would turn out just fine for him, right?
