Chapter Text

The warm rays of the sun gently caressed Cherry Cola Cookie's complexion. Her hair fizzed in response to the warmth reaching her face, creating a faint bubbling sound. There was silence, besides the quiet sounds of flowing water raining down in the fountain, across the main building. The fountain that Cherry Cola Cookie had decided to take a short rest on before the gathering of The Sun Tournament's participants had officially started. The trip had robbed her of so much of her physical and mental energy that she was left dozing off on a bench just in front of the fountain. Even a few minutes of sleep would be enough at this rate.

It had been a month since Cherry Cola Cookie received the letter to attend The Sun Tournament, a tournament that most of Earthbread had come to see. She accepted with slight hesitation, realizing the weight of this decision. The many pairs of eyes would be nerve-wracking, but it was all worth it if Cherry Cola Cookie could prove herself as a swordsman. To prove herself as a swordsman would mean that her abilities would be enough, and that was enough for her. Years and years of training and training would amount to this very moment, the moment where she would show her skills to the entire world.

It was a terrifying thing to think about if she had lost The Sun Tournament. Lost while so many watched, knowing she was a failure. Someone who shouldn't ever be allowed near swords ever again.

The self-reminder alone of The Sun Tournament shook Cherry Cola Cookie awake, jolting with a realization, unaware that she had been lost in thought while still partially asleep. Her eyes stretched wide for a second before completely resting back again at the sudden shock. Cherry Cola Cookie's anxious thoughts had blocked out the presence of other voices not too far away, to which she acknowledged as her eyes met their physical appearances. Her situation came to her all too quickly with this addition. The long trip, the other competitors, the tournament

Cherry Cola Cookie never moved from her position, hoping to come off as still asleep so no one would approach her. She did keep her eye slightly ajar, to get a small view of the other present contestants currently conversing. It was until another came into view that her eyes shut on instinct, refusing to look again as her thoughts were filled with disbelief. She should've known that specific someone would be here. Cherry Cola Cookie hoped she could get through the tournament as quickly as possible and prove herself, but that hope went right out the window.

There was so much going on all at once. Cherry Cola Cookie belittled herself for forgetting something so important that the contestants chosen had in common.

They were all good with blades.

Cherry Cola Cookie didn't know any of the other competitors, and didn't find it in her to care, but one voice stuck out, one that went deep into her memories.

"Cherry Cola Cookie! Hey!" Someone shouted. The sudden shout made Cherry Cola Cookie flinch, but it was more the voice itself. The distance was rapidly closing as footsteps became louder. Cherry Cola Cookie didn't want to believe it, hoping that she wouldn't be approached. The only thing Cherry Cola Cookie could do was hope that she appeared to be asleep enough that a conversation wouldn't be struck.

Cherry Cola Cookie was too nervous to face the owner of the voice. She was in for a lot this tournament. Too many things she wasn't ready to unravel when she was only here to prove herself as a swordsman.

It was too late. A gentle shake of Cherry Cola Cookie's shoulder had startled her enough to create a small gasp.

"Cherry Cola Cookie? Are you okay? It's me, Cream Soda Cookie!" Cream Soda Cookie had reminded, "we're friends, remember?"

Silence.

Ignoring Cream Soda Cookie felt like a crime, but Cherry Cola Cookie wasn't prepared enough to face her. It was all so sudden. She could feel Cream Soda Cookie's upset look as she was met with no answer.

Cherry Cola Cookie had decided to gather up her courage as quickly as she could, hoping she would at least be able to show that she acknowledges Cream Soda Cookie. But just as she brought her upper half up, a cookie known as Laurel Cookie had made his appearance, instantly grabbing her and Cream Soda Cookie's attention.

The chatter in the background ceased completely, and Laurel Cookie prepared to speak.

"Welcome, swordsman of all kinds, to The Sun Tournament!" Laurel Cookie greeted. "The Sun Tournament shows the true potential of the greatest of swordsmen. With all of your great skills, only one of you may come out victorious, earning the right to draw the greatest sword of them all, the Sunblade."

Whispers added up as the last word had been spoken.

"Woah, that sounds so cool!" Cream Soda Cookie commented, but her excitement was cut short as her attention shifted back to Cherry Cola Cookie, who had sat up in the middle of Laurel Cookie's speech.

It took some time for Cherry Cola Cookie to realize Cream Soda Cookie was directing her gaze towards her, smiling with joy. The look was always expected, but Cherry Cola Cookie never got used to it.

"Cherry Cola Cookie, you're awake! I can't believe we get to see each other again! I missed you!" Cream Soda Cookie happily spoke, "it's been so long, can I give you a hug?"

Cream Soda Cookie's words brought a light blush to Cherry Cola Cookie's face, forcing her to look down. Cream Soda Cookie wore a beautiful white dress, complimenting her appearance in a way that you'd know she was a delight to be around. Her long, fizzing, blue hair that went all the way down to her legs, reflecting the waves of an ocean you'd never want to walk away from. The sword that mirrored her appearance, bringing elegance to her very being.

Through the mere glimpse Cherry Cola Cookie got of Cream Soda Cookie's face, she could see the radiant blue eyes that captured but a small hint of her pure soul and the cool color of sapphires. Something that Cherry Cola Cookie found hard to look away from.

The refreshing scent of calming waves washed over Cherry Cola Cookie, making her mind haze slightly. She couldn't think fully before answering Cream Soda Cookie with her honest mind, "yeah… Sure."

Cream Soda Cookie wasted little time as she pulled Cherry Cola Cookie into a gentle embrace. But just as it had happened, it had ended. Cherry Cola Cookie wished it could last even a little bit more, wanting to feel the soft touch of Cream Soda Cookie as she felt the beats of their heart's combine. A feeling she wanted to shake off as quickly as possible.

"We should get going, Cherry Cola Cookie, the tournament starts soon and we can't be out here forever!" Cream Soda Cookie gestured her hand to help Cherry Cola Cookie up, who shyly accepted.

"Yeah, okay."

Chapter 2: Acquaintance

Summary:

Cherry Cola Cookie is shown around.

Chapter Text

Cherry Cola Cookie was led to a massive training field. A perfect place to spar with others, with its open area created to hold different sparring sessions all at once. The grass wasn't real, but it was made to conveniently support those standing on it without problems. There was a decently sized platform on one half of the field made of fresh, clean cement.

The Sun Tournament is a big deal, thought Cherry Cola Cookie as she and the opposing swordsmen followed someone who was supposed to show them around, a tour guide. It was a new face, wearing a uniform affiliated with The Sun Tournament.

The tour guide, introduced as Blueberry Juice Cookie, was instructed to show the swordsmen around the premises. Their physique was quite tall, with brown skin, short, dark blue hair, and dark teal eyes. They wore a uniform tailored to fit the exact measurements of their body, not fitting too small or too big. The visible quality of the gold fabric and white lining of the uniform brought some sense of great importance to this cookie. From behind the uniform was a design of a sun, representing the Sunblade. The feeling of intimidation struck everyone as their shoes clacked ahead, soon coming to a stop.

"This is where you'll be training before The Sun Tournament in a few days. The entire field you stand in will be fully granted to all of you," the cookie informed. Their face held a serious look of focus.

"Will this area be available at all times?" Questioned a cookie from behind. "Training is important to all of us."

"Yes, every one of you have full access to use this training ground up until the tournament," answered Blueberry Juice Cookie.

Blueberry Juice Cookie gestured their hand out to face the field, exaggerating their point. Everyone was given extra time to get a last look at the training ground before Blueberry Juice Cookie lead everyone to the next area.

As Cherry Cola Cookie followed behind Blueberry Juice Cookie with the others, she had completely forgotten Cream Soda Cookie who followed so closely by her side. Her incoming words startled Cherry Cola Cookie, who was caught off-guard and unaware of how close Cream Soda Cookie really was.

"When the tour is over, do you want to spar? I think a spar would really help us catch up with each other!" Cream Soda Cookie proposed. Her voice was hardly above a whisper, as her words were for Cherry Cola Cookie only. Cream Soda Cookie didn't look at Cherry Cola Cookie, keeping her eyes ahead.

Cream Soda Cookie knew how direct eye contact made Cherry Cola Cookie feel, so she limited herself from it when it came to conversations with her. The small, nostalgic gesture reminding her of her favorite things about Cream Soda Cookie, all coming back in the span of a few seconds. The way she always asked before touching Cherry Cola Cookie, the way she always complimented her, the way she would ask how she was doing, the way she never excluded her from anything… Everything slowly came creeping back.

"Cherry Cola Cookie?" Cream Soda Cookie turned her head. Cherry Cola Cookie wasn't answering.

Again, Cherry Cola Cookie had been lost in thought. She thought over her answer quickly, although she was fully aware that Cream Soda Cookie was patient with her and her responses, only asking once before she got the hint that Cherry Cola Cookie didn't want to answer, to then she would drop the topic completely.

Sparring seemed like a good idea, but not so much the idea of catching up with each other. There were things Cherry Cola Cookie wanted to keep to herself, afraid that it would end her friendship with the best person she has ever met for good. Just as she was about to respond, she remembered something vital. Her mouth still open from almost answering as she shut it tight. She had to change her answer at the last second.

"No, I don't want to spar or talk…" Cherry Cola Cookie responded, a blunt tone in her voice. It somehow felt harsh when Cream Soda Cookie looked away from her. Fear began to rise as Cherry Cola Cookie worried that she might of hurt her best friend's feelings with her answer.

It was only for the best that they didn't spar against each other or even spoke for that matter. Cherry Cola Cookie had to remind herself that it was only to keep their friendship alive. She didn't want to lose Cream Soda Cookie, she would never forgive herself.

"Oh… Okay! I hope we'll get to see each other around then." Cream Soda Cookie tried her hardest not to sound let down. Her real feelings towards the situation were starting to slip.

Ever since Cream Soda Cookie had arrived, it felt as if she was being actively avoided by the only person she knew out of all the others. Her own best friend made it feel as though she had done something wrong. Every action Cream Soda Cookie took towards Cherry Cola Cookie felt forced, like Cherry Cola Cookie didn't want anything to do with her… And she didn't know why.

Cream Soda Cookie gripped her sword tighter, hoping that she would get an answer to this strange behavior from Cherry Cola Cookie soon.

"—This is the floor you will all be staying in. You will all get individual rooms—" Blueberry Juice Cookie stood between three doors, all labeled with the names of the participants, "—these three doors will lead you to your rooms, the names next to the doors show the rooms to those that they belong to behind it." There was silence, before Blueberry Juice Cookie had taken it as cue to finalize the tour, "if there are any questions regarding this place, I am always open to answering them."

The challengers that were following along with the guide quickly halted to search the doors for their names, stepping inside as soon as they were sure it had contained their room before entering. Some hesitated and some wasted no time to disappear within the doors that held their assigned rooms behind them.

Cherry Cola Cookie scanned the tags near the doors to find her own name. It took a few seconds, but her eyes finally settled on the room that was supposed to have hers amidst all the others. To which, she slowly realized, was above Cream Soda Cookie's name.

Panic rose into Cherry Cola Cookie, who held her head in disbelief, walking away from the rooms without thinking. She paid no mind to the others who whispered as she quickly walked away. She just wanted to get away to sort her scattered mind.

When Cherry Cola Cookie had figured she was far enough from the crowd, she looked up to the walls surrounding her. They were filled with paintings of various objects and scenes. Cabinets with vases, occupying a few roses. Beautiful cloths below the vases, designed with golden linings. The walls themselves had flowing patterns that splayed every inch. Floor tiles littered the very ground Cherry Cola Cookie stood on, designed with intricate design. The building felt more of like a castle than a place to house those using the training area.

Everything about this place felt like too much to Cherry Cola Cookie. It was all so very beautiful, only to be used for The Sun Tournament, that only happened once a year, lasting but a few days.

The sounds of echoing steps were all Cherry Cola Cookie could hear. They were loud, but it was a clear sign that she was the only one present. She needed to be alone somewhere to recuperate herself. She needed to collect her thoughts before she could face anyone in her current state.

Cherry Cola Cookie descended various stairs she forgot she had already went through before the tour had ended, only now realizing how many the place really had. The place was void of any other sounds that weren't the tapping of her feet on the carpet beneath her and the occasional cookies that wore uniforms navigating their way around the place.

It felt like a long time when Cherry Cola Cookie could see the garden that occupied the outside of the building, opposite from the front entrance, littered with beautiful flowers and a pathway that lead deeper towards the garden. It was a gorgeous sight to see. The sun still shined, bringing light to the vibrant colors of the rose bushes.

As Cherry Cola Cookie passed the doorway that separated the inside from the outside, her view on the garden broadened. The paths lead to little areas with tables and chairs, all with their own graceful canopies. Canopies that matched the same aesthetic the rest of the place had, gold lining and roses. If not for her circumstances, Cherry Cola Cookie would invite Cream Soda Cookie to talk underneath one of them.

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

Cherry Cola Cookie recoiled at the sound of the voice. It was unfamiliar, but it was soft, with admiration.

"I always come to this garden whenever I have the chance," continued the stranger.

The source of the words made itself be known as light footsteps proceeded to make their way to Cherry Cola Cookie's side.

Cherry Cola Cookie didn't look to the other cookie's face, but noticed their attire, slowing turning. A white, refined shirt, dark pink bottoms, a fencing sword… This was one of the other contenders.

Raspberry Mousse Cookie of House Raspberry. One of the cookies that Cherry Cola Cookie would be up against.

What's he doing here? Cherry Cola Cookie questioned. She expected most of the competitors had gone off to train to sharpen their skill levels before the tournament, but here was Raspberry Mousse Cookie, walking through the garden inhabited by roses. Cherry Cola Cookie couldn't understand it, but she didn't really want to, she only excused him and made her own way into the garden.

On her way, she made sure to take in the view, hoping it would calm her down. Large walls of rose bushes that resembled a maze were all she could see. She stopped to take in the view of some of the roses settled on the tall walls of the bushes. A beautiful, vibrant red, delicate petals, and a crisp aroma.

Only a few minutes had gone by, but Cherry Cola Cookie had already felt a rise in her mood from the scenery. It was healing to be around. No loud noises, no audible voices, no one around to disturb her. A small smile made its way to her face, showing her content feeling.

The maze of rose bushes lead Cherry Cola Cookie down to the middle, where an alluring fountain rested, pouring water from a small, carved statue resting atop. It came as a surprise since Cherry Cola Cookie didn't even get the hint of flowing water nearby. Nevertheless, this place would make a great spot to recover from overwhelming thoughts. Benches were set on contrasting sides of the fountain, like the place knew Cherry Cola Cookie would visit, leaving her a place to sit.

Cherry Cola Cookie strolled at a leisurely pace to one of the benches. She set her dual swords close to her seating, making sure they stayed within her sight. Her dual swords are very important to her, as she is always seen with them in hand. Just this once, she would let them go, freeing her grasp from them. She would stay like that for several minutes, letting everything go.

Small, deep breaths, letting it all out.

Cherry Cola Cookie's thoughts on the events that transpired earlier resurfaced. Now that she could think clearly, it was obvious that she was too harsh with her reactions. Guilt trickled into her mind. There was no changing the past now, she could only live with the present, no matter how much she regretted it.

Only the choices she made now mattered.
