Chapter Text

“Alright my brother's listen closely.”

What? Odysseus had heard his own voice he glanced around the room frantically. What now? More sirens? He had been at Calypso's island mere moments ago.. where was he now? 

His breath caught in his throat as he saw her, Penelope, the light of his life. And a boy standing next to her who he immediately recognized 

“Penelope? Telemachus?”

“Odysseus!”

“Father?”

But strangely enough.. They weren't the only ones. There was a group of people behind his wife and son. But they didn't matter at the moment, he pulled his family into a tight hug 

“I'm so sorry- I've been stuck at sea- Poseidon-”

“Odysseus my love it's ok..”

He couldn't help but feel the guilt sinking in his chest fade away as he held his wife and son in his arms for the first time in over a decade.. or was it two? He had lost count. It felt like a century away from them.

“Captain?”

Odysseus froze again. That voice. 

“Eurylochus?”

“What happened? We had just set sail and-”

“Sail? The last thing I remember was the little guys with the fruit.”

“Polites?”

Odysseus voice was entangled with grief. He absentmindedly let go of his wife and son and pulled his deceased best friend and brother-in-law into a spine crushing bear hug.

“My brothers- your alive-”

This brought a look of confusion onto their faces, Polites being the first to speak up

“Why wouldn't we be?”

“You got us through the war alive, did you not?”

“But- Zeus- the Cyclops- I-”

“Odysseus of Ithaca.”

Odysseus reached for his waist pulling his sword immediately as Polites confusion grew

“Captain? Is that my headba-”

“Who goes there?”

“Lord of Time, Titan of the Harvest.”

“Grandfather, Chronos.”

That voice also sent a shiver down his spine, not as much as the raspy voice of the all powerful being but one that brought him a stage sense of comfort

The father and son spoke at the same time

“Athena!”

They glanced at each other, Telemachus smiling wildly, his eyes bright and full of wonder, Odysseus returned it with a small pained smile of his own.

“Mortals and.. Grandchildren. I've brought you here to see the story of a mortal man. Past, present, and future.”

“Ohohohoho! Grandpa's here to show us the future?”

“Lord Hermes?”

“Pay him no mind Odysseus. How are you even here grandfather?”

“An answer for another time. For now a story.”

Hah. Odysseus probably should've expected this, Telemachus was his son after all, so it made sense that he interjected this discussion of the gods

“Erm- Lord Chronos? Could you tell us what mortal it is?”

“Nobody. Or rather the ‘Reigning King of Ithaca’, I believe you know him.”

“Me..?”

“The Odyssey, story of Οὖτις Odysseus.”

(Outis-Nobody)

Odysseus felt a strangely familiar feeling but it was all too different at the same time. 

“Quick thought..?”

“No I just made time slow.”

“Lord Chronos?

“I'm afraid I have to ask that you don't spoil anymore events. Mentioning the Cyclops was quite a big one. Enjoy your time with your wife and son Odysseus.”

“That's- ominous, what do you mean?”

ODYSSEUS

“Alright my brothers listen closely.”

“Well isn't this a familiar seen Captain?”

Odysseus chuckled at his brother-in-law's comment. He could recall the speeches he has to give, but the scene did seem familiar..

ODYSSEUS

Tonight we make the Trojans pay.

Odysseus paused as did the two other soldiers in the room, an image forming out of thin air as if a mirage. It was of a bunch of men- no, a bunch of soldiers inside the Trojan Horse.

“This is the end of the war.”

“The horse was a good idea Captain.”

“This is how dad ended the war? But he looks so much younger.. what took so long to get home?”

“The horse was a trap, we left someone outside and told the Trojans we gave up, that it was a monument to Lady Athena we had constructed as a parting gift.”

“It is a monument to me.”

Odysseus felt a familiar feeling swell in his chest as he smiled as his godly friend

“Goddess of Wisdom and Battle Strategies. They took the horse into their city and we struck at night, then I..”

ODYSSEUS

“10 years of war they've killed us slowly.. But now we'll be the ones who slay!”

“Woah.. 10 years of war? That's what took you so long to come home dad?”

Odysseus felt a hand intertwine with his own and when he turned his head he saw the loving smile of his wife, he felt his heart melt once more as he leaned against her, his worries over the years fading away.

“10 years is a long time.. My King. We assumed you died.”

Odysseus didn't recognize the man but something about him made him uneasy. But Odysseus had certainly wished he had died at times.

ODYSSEUS 

“Think of your wives and your children
Your families wonder where you've been!”

The Odyssey in the mirage smiled fondly as he spoke, the image of his infant son and beautiful wife clear in his mind

“It's comforting to know you thought of us during the war.”

“You both are the only thing that got me through it.”

ODYSSEUS 

They're growing old and yet you're still here
Do what I say and you'll see them again

CREW

Yes sir!

ODYSSEUS

Diomedes will lead the charge!
Agamemnon will flank the guards!
Menelaus will let our mates through the gates to take the whole city at large !

“Dad really is a natural leader..”

“Sure is.. Little Wolf.”

ODYSSEUS

Teucer will shoot any ambush attack
And Little Ajax will stay back
Nestor, secure Helen and protect her

“Ah, I do wonder how Helen is doing now..”

“You know Helen of Sparta?”

“Of course, she's my cousin.”

“Hey Ody, weren't you one of Helen's suitors?”

“Eh, I wanted someone smarter.”

Odysseus said with a small chuckle, letting go of his wife's hand and wrapping his arm around her protectively

ODYSSEUS

Neo, avenge your father, kill the brothers of Hector

CREW

Yes sir!

ODYSSEUS 

Find that inner strength now
Use that well of pride
Fight through every pain now!

Eurylochus chuckled a bit, smiling at the image

“I'm still getting excited hearing these words.”

“You and me both.”

ODYSSEUS

Ask yourself inside
What do you live for?
What do you try for?

What do you wish for?
What do you fight for?

CREW

“Oh this is going to get embarrassing..”

Odysseus muttered under his breath, he knew what he was fighting for and living for during and after the war.

ODYSSEUS 

Penelope..
Penelope..
And Telemachus!
I fight for us..
I fight for us..!

Odysseus heard someone say ‘Aw!’ and inwardly cringed, it was well known he cared for his wife and son but to have it so visibly displayed was rather embarrassing. Especially when said son was staring at him like a celebrity and was awestruck to find out that his father cared for him

ODYSSEUS

ODYSSEUS 

Telemachus..

CREW

(What do you wish for?)

ODYSSEUS 

I'm on my way!

CREW

(What do you fight for?)

ODYSSEUS 

ATTACK!

“I- I truly am sorry it took- erm- I'm sorry it has taken me so long to return home. I'm certain you'll find out why soon enough.”

“Odysseus my love, you have nothing to apologize for.. Though I would've appreciated you coming back sooner to ward off the suitors.”

“Suitors?”

“Ah me and some others were seeking the Queen to remarry an-”

“Remarry?”

The anger in his tone was far from hidden, nearby one might've heard a noise that could be interpreted as a wisdom goddess chuckling, and a messenger god cackling.

“We had assumed you died-”

“Am I dead?”

“Well clearly not.”

“Then you'll clearly keep yourself away from my wife.”

ODYSSEUS

AGH! Who was that?!

“What was that noise?”

“An eagle?”

Athena luckily supplied them with an answer

“A god.”

ZEUS

A vision
Of what is to come, cannot be outrun
Can only be dealt with right here, and now

ODYSSEUS 

Tell me how!

ZEUS

I don't think you're ready.

“You've spoken with the king of the gods?! Captain how are you alive?”

“So.. informally too.”

“What isn't he ready for?”

ZEUS

A mission.
To kill someone's son.
A foe who won't run.
Unlike anyone you have faced before..

ODYSSEUS 

Say no more
I know that I'm ready!

ZEUS

I don't think you're ready...

“Is that..?”

“It can't be.”

“The Captain would never kill a baby!”

Odysseus grit his teeth, it was far from the worst thing he'd done on his travels, but it still haunted him.

He felt a weight leaning against him, it was comforting, he smiled slightly at Penelope.

ODYSSEUS 

It's just an infant..
It's just a boy.
What sort of imminent threat does he pose, that I cannot avoid?

“Oh thank the gods he isn't going to do it!”

“Polites are you crazy? The king of the gods ordered him to..”

“But why would he? Who even is this kid-”

ZEUS

This is the son of none other than Troy's very own Prince Hector
Know that he will grow from a boy to an avenger
One fueled with rage as you're consumed by age
If you don't end him now, you'll have no one left to save..

Penelope felt something strange, oh no, she knew what was coming next.

“He wouldn't..”

ZEUS

You can say goodbye to
(Penelope)
You can say goodbye to
(Penelope)

That was the nail in the coffin for her to believe he would. He couldn't refuse Zeus anymore

“It's okay my love.”

She wiped a tear from his eye- When had he started crying?

ODYSSEUS

I could raise him as my own!

ZEUS

He will burn your house and throne.

ODYSSEUS 

Or send him far away from home!

ZEUS

He'll find you wherever you go!

ODYSSEUS 

Make sure his past is never known!

ZEUS

The gods will MAKE it known

ODYSSEUS 

I'd rather bleed for you, down on my knees for ya!

ZEUS

He's bringing you down on your knees.

ODYSSEUS 

I'm beggin’ please!

ZEUS

This is the will of the Gods.

The tension in the room was palpable, the silence was a dagger that could cut through the toughest of steels as they watched the King of Ithaca beg on bended knee to a God.

ODYSSEUS

Please! Don't make me do this- Don't make me do this!

ZEUS

The blood on your hands is something you won't lose..
All you can choose is whose.

ODYSSEUS 

I look into your eyes and I
Think back to the son of mine
You're as old as he was
When I left for war

Just as quickly as the first song ended, the next begun, silence hung like a horrible tapestry throughout the room. Only one person daring to speak 

“..Reminds you of me? You- Dad you wouldn't?”

ODYSSEUS

Will these actions haunt my days?
Every man I've slain..
Is the price I pay, endless pain!

A soft sigh left someone's mouth. Polites rested a comforting hand on his captains shoulder as Penelope leaned further against Odysseus.

“So.. Dad isn't going to? You seem conflicted-”

ODYSSEUS 

Close your eyes.
And spare yourself the view..
How could I hurt you?

“Oh thank the Gods he won't..”

Athena spoke up at Telemachus’ words

“The God's shouldn't be thanked for this. It is the will of Zeus”

ODYSSEUS 

I'm just a man
Who's tryin' to go home
Even after all the years away from what I've known
I'm just a man
Who's fighting for his life

The man who called himself a ‘suitor’ spoke up to ridicule the King of Ithaca 

“Fighting an infant? I'd hardly call that a battle.”

“Watch your tongue. Dog.”

Odysseus couldn't help but smile, his former patron Goddess and.. friend, sticking up for him again? Well it made him proud, proud to bare the owl pendant on his clothes.

ODYSSEUS

Deep down I would trade the world to see my son and wife..
I'm just a man

“I.. I would give anything to have returned home. Friends, enemies, strangers, my life.”

ODYSSEUS

But when does a comet become a meteor?
When does a candle become a blaze?
When does a man become a monster?

“Captain? You aren't a monster.”

“Thank you Polites.”

(But you don't have to lie)

ODYSSEUS 

When does a ripple become a tidal wave?
When does the reason become the blame?
When does a man become a monster?

Odysseus grit his teeth, he didn't like this. He hated this line, he- he had become a monster, became what it takes to survive.

“Odysseus, my dear, take a deep breath.”

ODYSSEUS 

Forgive me

The man on screen picked up the infant, cradling the baby as he approached the wall of Troy.

“Father?”

That made it even worse, he felt tears prick in his eyes. His feet dug into the floor as he stared daggers at the floor

ODYSSEUS

I'm just a man..

An infant, barely old enough to babble, was dropped from the walls of Troy. And thus was the story of Astyanax. The Last Son of Troy

“528? Captain didn't we leave with 600?”

“I- this is out of order. Lord Chronos why are you showing this before Polyp-?”

“Calm yourself Mortal, it will be explained later.”

“..Very well.”

“Thank you Odysseus, I'm so glad we could see eye to eye.”

Odysseus grit his teeth, saying anything might end badly, this man was a titan who had rivaled Zeus in terms of power.. he had barely been overthrown.

“Ah, perhaps I should bring in one of my children before I forget again.. And the man this song is about.”

“Childre- Another god?!”

Odysseus was dumbstruck, another one?!

In the blink of an eye two people appeared, one was a man wearing a three pronged crown, a long white toga around his waist and seemingly.. tentacles? Slipping out from underneath. The man also carried a trident. Odysseus had recognized him instantly

“Poseidon!”

Odysseus exclaimed spitefully, hand reaching for his blade. He knew he couldn't harm the god but he still reached for his sword

“Have we me-? Father.”

The god's posture straightened as he dropped his trident, pointing it at the titan but before anything else happened it had disappeared.

“I suppose I should have disciplined you as a child.. You did taste the worst after all.”

Perhaps it was sadistic but Odysseus relished the god's fear. He smirked as he watched the sea god tremble. He wanted more, to watch him squirm and beg for mercy..

“Try anything else and history repeats itself. Boy.”

The other person was someone who Odysseus had known more personally, a member of his crew known as-

CREW

Perimedes!

“Uh- Yeah? That's me?”

“Sit down friend, we're watching our story.”

PERIMEDES

Yo! Captains gone soft!

“Do you truly believe that of me?”

“Huh- what- I didn't say that! I mean- I said it but not me said that- I-”

Odysseus chuckled, he had been soft early in his journey. Too soft. Perimedes was right about that.

“Fret not comrad, this is the future.”

“..The what?”

PERIMEDES

72 of our dudes are now lost!

“72 of us died? Damn that sucks.. Glad I'm still there!”

“Perimedes!”

“What? Mister Open Arms is gonna give me another lecture?”

ELPENOR

He hasn't been the same since Troy...
I heard he had to kill an evil baby boy!

“Ah.. Odysseus.. My captain! The Baby Killer-!”

“Perimedes, enough.”

“Yes Captain.”

PERIMEDES

Oh please! Gimmie that baby and I’d yeet it off the tower!

“What?”

ELPENOR

What?

“Perimedes.. You are on thin ice.”

“Wha- It isn't me! Not yet at least..”

PERIMEDES

I don't love anybody! That's my power!

“..I- That's not a power-”

PERIMEDES

Cause if I got nothing to lose,
Then I got nothing to fear!
And there’s no way I'll get bruised
If I don't let anyone near!

“And that's not good advice. Keeping those you love far from you hurts you even more Perimedes.”

“I- Captain you don't have to give me so much advice- Why is nobody else talking?!”

PERIMEDES

Cause it's me, myself, and I
Can't fall if I don't fly
Can't fail if I don't try
I’m in my comfort zone!

“Perimedes, my friend, are you alright?”

“Yeah!”

ODYSSEUS

Six hundred men...
Six hundred men under my command
With only one goal in mind

“Get to see Penelope and Telemachus!”

Polites cooed as he made fun of his captain, feigning a swoon as he placed his hand on his head and fell towards Odysseus who didn't move, not catching him, having Polites fall to the ground

“Ow.. Ody what happened to Open Arms eh?”

The man on the floor teased and laughed as he stood back up. A bit surprised, normally he'd have been caught. Odysseus smiled slightly, perhaps he should let down his guard once more? For now? 

No.. that got his friends killed in the first place 

CREW

Make it back alive to our homeland

ODYSSEUS 

Six hundred men! Six hundred miles of open sea
But the problem's not the distance..

CREW

It's what lies in between..

An unwelcome shiver shot down Odysseus spine. He recalled everything. 

Telemachus smile only grew as his eyes remained glued to the projection. Athena and his mother had told him stories of his father but this.. this was a whole new thing entirely! It was almost like he could experience it himself!

ODYSSEUS 

And Ithaca's waiting 

CREW

Ithaca's waiting!

ODYSSEUS 

My kingdom is waiting

CREW

The kingdom is waiting

ODYSSEUS
Penelope's waitin' for me!
So full speed ahead, full speed ahead!

“It's comforting to know you thought about me just as much as I did of you!”

EURYLOCHUS

Captain!

CREW

Eurylochus!

“My brother it's you!”

“I- I'm surprised to have shown up..”

“Eurylochus my brother, you.. You play an important part in all of my journeys.”

EURYLOCHUS

Six hundred men!

CREW

EURYLOCHUS

Six hundred men with big mouths to feed.

“Heh, big mouths was right.”

“They couldn't certainly eat their fill captain.”

“Eat? Oh yes.. that too.”

“What do you mean?”

EURYLOCHUS

And we've run out of supplies to eat

Curse the war, our food store's deplеted

EURYLOCHUS

“..Hey dad how many are there again?”

“Oh just me of course.”

EURYLOCHUS
Six hundred reasons to take what we can
So Captain, what's the plan?

ODYSSEUS 

Watch where the birds fly!

CREW

ODYSSEUS 
They will lead us to land!

CREW

There we'll hunt for food, my second in command..

EURYLOCHUS & CREW

“Man.. When am I gonna show up? We saw Elpenor, Eurylochus and Perimedes already.. not to mention during the war!”

POLITES

Captain!

ODYSSEUS 

Polites!

“Found you!”

“Oh.”

POLITES

Look! There in the distance, I see an island!
I see a light that faintly glows..
Maybe they're people, lighting a fire!
Maybe they'll share some food, who knows?

“I found an island? Hey I'm gonna save us from starving!”

“..Yeah you will Polites!”

“Odysseus my love?”

“Dad? Are you.. okay?”

“Yeah just.. reminiscing.”

Odysseus wiped his eyes. He had to stop crying in a room with an enemy.

Said enemy wasn't even paying attention, he seemed to be picking at his teeth with his trident. As if he'd gotten a chunk of Odysseus men’ in his teeth when he took them.

ODYSSEUS 

Something feels off here.. I see fire but there's no smoke.

“I say we strike fir-”

“Never change Eurylochus.”

“What do you mean captain?”

EURYLOCHUS

I say we strike first, we don't have time to waste
So let's raid the place and—

ODYSSEUS 

No.

“..Oh that's what you mean.”

ODYSSEUS 

Polites, gear up, you and I'll go ahead.

POLITES

You and I'll go ahead!

ODYSSEUS 

We should try to find a way no one ends up dead

EURYLOCHUS

We don't know what's ahead!

“Eurylochus, are you.. questioning Odysseus in front of the crew?”

“Ah.. It's a problem I have.”

“He still likes to treat the Captain like we're kids running around in the forest!”

“Ooh I remember that!”

“Until the day we found that giant boars den..”

“That was terrifying.”

ODYSSEUS 

Give me 'til sunrise, and if we don't return..
Then six hundred men can make this whole place burn!
Now full speed ahead, full speed ahead!

“That.. that's a little extreme isn't it?”

CREW
Full speed ahead

ODYSSEUS
We're up, we're off, and away we go!

“Oh that's it? No more trauma Ody?”

“Oh man.. Athena said you fought a bunch of monsters! I wish I was there..”

“No you don't Telemachus.."

“Sure I do! Fighting monsters.. Like the Harpy's, chimera's, minotaur! Give me something! Sirens- Ooh or a Cyclo-”

“Telemachus stop!”

“I- Forgive me father..”

“No it's just.. I wouldn't wish fighting a Cyclops on anyone.. Or having to kill a siren..”

“Cyclops? You mean one of m-”

“Shut it!”

“The hell did you say mortal?”

Odysseus seemed to realize that Poseidon couldn't harm him here so he stood up and glared the god directly in the eyes, he could hear Hermes laughing and Athena silently watching 

“I told you to shut up. Unless you want to upset your dear old daddy. No spoilers you sack of seaweed.”

“..Disrespect me again and I'll rip you apart Mortal.”

“His name is Odysseus dear uncle.”

He felt pride swell in his chest as his mentor and friend spoke up in his defense.

ODYSSEUS

When I turned nine, my dad pulled me aside and said
"Son, I'm going insane!”

“What?”

“Oh. This- This is my past? Why is this being shown it's before the war happened?”

“I'm sure you'll excuse me for having bits of last and future running free.”

A look of confusion was very visible on Telemachus’ face

“Why did you say that like that.”

Hermes broke into laughter as a realization hit him

“..Ohohoho! Oh my Gods! He's making references to the songs!”

“Hermes. My father, the man who ate me and my siblings would not reference the material we're watching.”

“Wait, Dad, did you say he went insane?”

ODYSSEUS

“I'm losing my mind, don't have too much time and soon you'll take over my reign”

“Wait how old were you when you became king?”

“Uhh- By the age of 13 I believe. My life has been rather hectic, you'll forgive me if I have any inaccuracies I hope.”

ODYSSEUS

“Your cunningness will make you tough, cause b ravery is not enough"

“That much is true.”

“You agree with me and my father, Lord Poseidon?”

“Being brave is just another word for foolishness if you lack ruthlessness.”

ODYSSEUS

“I could tell his time was getting shorter, his voice was getting weak, he could barely speak
And all I could think was

“Ugh, is anyone other than this mortal going to show up?”

“Have some respect Uncle.”

“Why should I?”

Telemachus pulled his father aside

“Father, isn't grandpa still around?”

“Remarkably yes, at least.. he was until I left, and I never saw him when I went..”

“Yes ok.. He's still in the castle, but he is rather.. weak now.”

ODYSSEUS

Where is he?
Where is the man who was larger than life?
Where is he?
Where is the man who was sharp as a knife?

“Worry not my love, his wits haven't dulled as much as you think.”

“I- I know, I'm his son after all, I had to get my intelligence from somewhere!”

“And what of your beautiful face?”

Odysseus felt his voice get caught in his throat, a Cyclops couldn't halt him in his tracks for longer than a minute, but one comment from his wife made him freeze up and go bright red

ODYSSEUS

Cause in my darkest days, the pain was our drive
Time is fleeting, it's running out
Time to be the man of the house

Odysseus was glad to be in a room filled with his friends and (technically) family. As begrudging as it was to admit he was related to Poseidon, he still was. He was a descendant of Hermes after all 

ODYSSEUS 

At the age of thirteen, I began the third king of Ithaca and did it with pride

“Thirteen? Father that's remarkable.. I- I haven't done anything with my life yet..”

“Telemachus, you'll do wonders my boy.”

He knew he would. He had faith in the man his son had grown to be.

ODYSSEUS 

The years passed by and it clearly was time for me to find a faithful bride

“Hm, I do wonder who it could be, Odysseus my love, do you know?”

“..N-No clue!”

ODYSSEUS 

Everybody wanted Helen of Sparta, I wanted someone smarter
Part of her family tree was the girl for me

His loving beautiful wife Penelope spoke up

“Ah you mean Iphthime”

“Penelope, we all know who I'm speaking of.”

ODYSSEUS 

A girl I would give the world to see!

Penelope!

“Oh my, I hadn't expected that!”

“Mom come on!”

ODYSSEUS

She made every heart in our vicinity soar, felt like infinity roars
She was the first thing I had an affinity for

“First? Oh Odysseus, you had an affinity for quite a lot back then!”

“Penelope!”

Odysseus exclaimed in shock as he looked at his wife

ODYSSEUS 

She's what I saved my virginity for

“Oh my! All for me!”

“I should've let the Trojans kill me.”

“..I hate this, I didn't need to know my parents slept together.”

“Come now little wolf, how else would you be born. When two people love each other, the male gets an absolutely dreadful headache, then 9 months later you have a child!”

“Wha- Lady Athena what?”

ODYSSEUS 

Oh, she was the cleverest girl I'd ever seen
Articulate, serene, the wittiness of my dreams, I wanted to scream

“You still are Penny.”
