Never Underestimate a Female Racer

Summary:

One-shot story. Having heard about Olympic City's underground racing scene, Clarence "Razor" Callahan decides to go there to challenge the city's most prominent racer, Eddie, only to get challenged by his girlfriend, Melissa. Despite believing he could beat her in a race, things don't go out so well for Razor, as Melissa proves herself to be a capable racer and defeats him.

Notes:

A few days ago, I had finished Need for Speed: Underground after having shelved it for months and It's incredible how much this game still holds up today and how it revitalized the Need for Speed franchise by shifting its focus to the nighttime street racing scene and the import tuner scene, which were huge during the 2000s and had influenced the original Fast and The Furious film from 2001. I had conceived this story way before finishing this game, as a way to tie in the Underground titles with the Most Wanted/Carbon storyline, since the four games were handled by Black Box, I thought it would have made sense to have all four games being connected in terms of storyline, with Rog mentioning the player being from the underground scene and Bayview, the setting for Underground 2, being mentioned in Most Wanted.

Disclaimer: I do not own the Need for Speed series. It belongs to EA Studios.

Work Text:

Downtown, Olympic City, USA

8:22 P.M.

On the vacant streets of the central part of Olympic City during the night, a black 2005 Ford Mustang GT with amber flame vinyls on the hood and both sides of the car as well as the words RZ placed on the doors had arrived near the traffic lights. Inside the car sat a young man wearing a black leather jacket with a white undershirt and black jeans with a short black hair. The man was Clarence Callahan, also known as "Razor", leader of the notorious street racing crew from Rockport called the "Blacklist". Razor prepared his vehicle and let out a smirk as he was waiting for the opponent he had long heard across the States and sought to beat in a race; the leader of the most feared street racing crew in Olympic City called the "Eastsiders", Eddie.

Having heard rumors about the "Eastsiders" spread across the streets, Razor had learned about Olympic City's underground scene, which was being held during the night as opposed to the racing scene in Rockport during the day, and became interested Eddie to demonstrate his superiority as a racer. What made it better for Razor was the fact that the police would never be able to catch up with them and arrest them, allowing the racers to freely roam the streets and arrange the races without the the possibility of getting caught, in contrast to Rockport City, where the streets was being watched over by the police, who were tasked in locating and arresting the racers on sight.

Just as Razor was waiting for Eddie to show up, he heard the sound of a car passing by and lowered the car window to see who had arrived to challenge him. However, as Razor took further inspection of the car, he saw that it was a modified purple Mitsubishi Eclipse with light blue tear vinyls with small shurikens placed on both sides of the car as well as the hood and various decals of various car brands, including ones from NOS, Toyo Tires and GReddy, placed around the car and the windshield and was also equipped with an underglow lime green neon set. Though he was left disappointed that Eddie didn't show up, Razor was nevertheless satisfied that there was at least someone to challenge him.

Suddenly, the Eclipse lowered down the left door window, revealing a blonde woman with shoulder length blonde hair and blue eyes and clad in a black leather biker jacket with a white tank top and blue jeans behind the wheel. The driver was Melissa, Eddie's lover and right hand woman who was also a significant figure in Olympic City's street racing scene. Razor let out a whistle and a small laugh as he glanced at Melissa, who groaned at his sight.

"Well, look who showed up around," Razor teased. "You know, I was expecting Eddie to show up so I can take him down, but right now, I'm in good company."

"Too bad this company is gonna end faster than you think," Melissa told Razor as she smirked.

Razor laughed. "Whatever. Once this race's over, you're about to have the wildest time of your life."

Melissa let out a small sarcastic laugh. "In your dreams."

Both Razor and Melissa prepared their cars and revved their engines as they observed the traffic lights, which ignited the red light. Melissa glanced at Razor, who positioned his lips to a kissing gesture in an attempt to hit on her, which caused her to sigh in disgust by his antics. As the traffic lights turned green, Razor and Melissa stepped on the brakes, starting up their cars and beginning the race. Razor's Mustang took the lead during the race, with Melissa's Eclipse trying to catch with the Mustang from the street sidelines, drafting on both sides of the road. Razor turned around and looked at Melissa's car on the back, laughing to himself and assuming he had the upper hand over her.

As they reached the other side of the street, both Razor and Melissa stirred their wheels and slid their cars at the corner. The Eclipse was able to catch up with the Mustang, as it attempted to overtake the car in terms of speed, but Razor once again shifted gears and attempted to get past the Eclipse to prevent it from overtaking the race., but the Eclipse still remained in the lead. Observing Melissa's racing method and studying her weaknesses, Razor took the opportunity to draft behind the car and pass by the Eclipse, causing the Eclipse to struggle to catching up with the Mustang as they passed through the northern part of Olympic City's streets.

As they drove on the road, the Mustang and the Eclipse increased their speed, allowing them to perform small leaps through the road as one car attempted to overtake the other. Melissa took the advantage by leaping over Razor's car and overtaking the lead lap in the race.

"Smart girl," Razor muttered. "But let's see if you can handle this."

Razor pressed the NOS button on his wheel, causing his car engine to boost up and increase its speed, passing Melissa's Eclipse with a velocity that matched that of a rocket waiting to explode in any minute. Taking the lead lap, Razor laughed as he saw Melissa's car behind him and continued driving through the streets, reaching the south part of the city. Displeased by Razor's tactic to defeat her, Melissa stepped on the gas pedal, accelerating her car, and shifted her gears, before moving her wheels and catching up with Razor's car.

Overwhelmed by his pride, Razor allowed himself to sink in his glory as he kept driving through the district, not noticing Melissa's car catching up with his and attempting to overtake him. However, Razor turned around and saw Melissa's Eclipse being on par with his as it drove alongside the Mustang, leaving him irritated.

Razor chuckled. "You just don't know when to give up, don't cha?"

Suddenly, the district's bridge began moving up its hydraulics, allowing for Razor and Melissa to jump to the next side of the street. The Mustang and the Eclipse kept catching up with one another and making their way to the moveable bridge. Melissa knew this was her opportunity to overwhelm Razor and take the upper hand.

"See ya!" Melissa sarcastically told Razor as she pressed the NOS button on her wheels.

"What the..." Razor yelped as he was caught off-guard by Melissa's Nitrous boost and seeing her overtaking the lap.

Powered by the Nitrous Gas imported in the car, the Eclipse easily took over the Mustang as the lead, causing the Mustang to stop in its tracks as the Eclipse drove its way to the bridge and jump its way to the next side of the streets, with Melissa screaming in excitement as she allowed the adrenaline to rush through her. As the Eclipse landed on the road, Melissa stepped on the clutch and slid her car on the right, stopping the car. Incapable to comprehend how Melissa was able to overtake him and win the race, Razor clutched his teeth in anger and stirred his wheel, driving away from the streets.

"Amateur," Melissa sarcastically commented as she stirred the wheel and drove away from the scene.

Notes:

And that's the end of the story. This is the first time I've ever written a street race scene in a fanfic, so I apologize if I didn't get some details right. The idea came with the intent of connecting the Underground titles with the Most Wanted/Carbon universe, making it feel like a shared universe, where each character could cross path and race against one another. I loved Underground and I'm planning on playing the other games in the series, with Most Wanted being the most highly revered in the series.

In Underground, Melissa has no lines and doesn't show up until the ending, so I decided to give her some lines to flesh her out a bit and give her a bit of a personality, and yeah, if Razor attempts to hit on you during a race, you would feel disgusted too.

Let me know your thoughts on this story and I hope you liked it. Until then, stay safe and take care.
