The Book of Dragons

Summary:

These are my own fanmade Dragon Species that appear in both How to Train Your Dragon and Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Chapter 1: Halovista

Chapter Text

Class: Tidal Class

(Halovista dragons are known for their connection to the ocean, possessing abilities related to water and aquatic environments. They are graceful swimmers and thrive in deep sea and coastal areas.)

Appearance

The Halovista is a medium-sized, sleek dragon that bears striking similarities to the vibrant, colorful Thorunna halourga sea slug. Its body is long and streamlined, perfect for swift movement through water. Its scales shimmer with iridescent hues, primarily shades of bright pink, purple, and neon blue, resembling the vivid colors of its sea slug inspiration.

Along its back and down its tail, Halovista has flowing, fin-like appendages that resemble the soft frills of a sea slug. These fins glow faintly in the dark, and they undulate elegantly as the dragon moves through the water, giving it an ethereal appearance. Its head is crowned with two horn-like appendages that resemble sea slug rhinophores, which are used to sense its surroundings underwater. The dragon’s eyes are large, providing excellent underwater vision.

Its body tapers off into a long, thin tail, which ends in a fan-like fin that helps with propulsion. While it is primarily built for aquatic environments, its sleek limbs allow it to move on land, though it prefers to stay in or near the water.

Abilities:

  • Bioluminescent Glow: The Halovista can control the bioluminescent patterns on its body, allowing it to communicate with others of its kind or confuse and disorient predators or enemies. It uses this glow as both a warning signal and a form of camouflage in the dark depths of the ocean.
  • Toxic Slime: Similar to the sea slug, the Halovista secretes a thin layer of toxic slime over its body. This slime is incredibly slippery and can poison or paralyze enemies that come into contact with it. This defensive mechanism ensures that the *Halovista* can avoid being captured or attacked by predators. In combat, it can fling this slime at its enemies to incapacitate them.
  • Hydrokinesis: The Halovista has limited control over water, able to create powerful jets to propel itself through the ocean or create swirling currents to disrupt enemies. These water jets can also be used offensively to knock enemies off balance or trap them in whirlpools.
  • Camouflage: The Halovista can change the color of its body to blend in with its surroundings, mimicking coral reefs, sea plants, or even the ocean floor. This makes it an expert ambusher in the water, able to sneak up on prey or evade predators without being detected.
  • Regeneration: Like many sea slugs, the Halovista can regenerate damaged body parts over time. This ability is particularly useful in the wild, where it may lose a fin or part of its tail to a predator. Given time, the dragon can regrow lost appendages and recover from injuries that would cripple other species.

Temperament:

The Halovista is a gentle, peaceful dragon by nature, preferring to avoid conflict whenever possible. It is highly intelligent and curious, spending much of its time exploring the depths of the ocean or the shallow coastal reefs. However, if threatened, it is capable of defending itself with its toxic slime and hydrokinesis, creating enough distance between itself and its attacker to escape.

The Halovista is known to form strong bonds with other sea creatures, and it often shares its territory with smaller, symbiotic species. Its bioluminescent glow attracts fish and other sea life, which it protects in exchange for food and companionship.

Despite its peaceful nature, the Halovista can be fiercely protective of its home and rider. It will use its abilities strategically to defend its territory, preferring to outsmart enemies rather than engage in direct combat.

Habitat:

Halovista dragons are found in coastal areas, coral reefs, and deep oceanic environments. They prefer warm, tropical waters where the sunlight can penetrate and illuminate their colorful bodies. They are often spotted swimming among coral formations or hiding in seaweed forests, blending in with the vibrant marine life around them.

They create intricate nests in coral reefs or underwater caves, often decorating their homes with glowing algae or bioluminescent organisms. These nests are safe havens, protected by their hydrokinesis and the natural camouflage of their surroundings.

Rider Bond:

Riders who bond with the Halovista must be patient, calm, and in tune with the ocean. The Halovista responds best to riders who appreciate the beauty and serenity of the sea, as it seeks harmony in its environment. These riders are often skilled swimmers themselves, spending much of their time in or near the water with their dragons.

The bond between rider and Halovista is based on mutual respect for the ocean and its creatures. Riders of the Halovista are known as guardians of the sea, protecting marine life and ensuring the balance of underwater ecosystems.

Tactics:

In battle, the Halovista prefers to disorient its enemies with its bioluminescent glow and slippery, toxic slime. It avoids direct confrontation, instead using hit-and-run tactics to wear down opponents. Its ability to create strong currents and whirlpools makes it difficult for enemies to move or fight effectively in the water.

The Halovista excels at underwater ambushes, hiding in coral or seaweed and waiting for the perfect moment to strike. It can incapacitate enemies with its toxic slime or use its hydrokinesis to trap them in swirling water, allowing it to escape or finish the fight with minimal damage.

Tidal Mastery:

The Halovista has a deep connection to the ocean, and it can sense changes in tides and water currents from great distances. This ability makes it an excellent navigator, able to guide its rider through treacherous waters and storms. It is also highly attuned to marine life, often leading its rider to schools of fish or hidden underwater treasures.

The Halovista is a graceful, intelligent, and vibrant dragon species that thrives in the ocean. Its abilities make it a formidable defender of the sea, and its peaceful nature endears it to those who respect the beauty of marine life.

Chapter 2: Sakura Soarer

Chapter Text

Class: Mystery Class

(Sakura Soarer dragons possess enigmatic powers connected to nature and elements, making them unpredictable and difficult to understand fully. They are known for their elegant, almost magical appearance and the strange abilities they wield.)

Appearance

The Sakura Soarer is a slender, graceful dragon with scales that shimmer in delicate shades of pale pink, white, and soft lavender, much like the petals of a cherry blossom. Its wings are its most striking feature: large and flowing, resembling giant cherry blossom petals, with veins of iridescent light that catch the sun as they flutter through the sky. These wings are translucent at the edges, giving them a soft, glowing appearance as the dragon glides effortlessly through the air.

Its body is long and streamlined, with a graceful neck and tail that ends in a flourish of petal-like appendages. Its head is adorned with two small, curved horns that mimic the branches of a cherry tree, and its eyes are a vibrant green, glowing with an ethereal light. The dragon’s limbs are slender and built for agility, ending in sharp talons that it uses to grip onto trees or rocky outcrops when it perches.

Abilities:

  •  Petalstorm: The Sakura Soarer can summon a storm of cherry blossom petals from its wings, creating a whirlwind of pink and white that obscures the vision of enemies. The petals are razor-sharp, cutting through the air and acting as both an offensive and defensive mechanism. The storm is highly disorienting, making it difficult for enemies to attack or track the dragon during battle.
  • Pollen Sleep: When in danger, the Sakura Soarer can release a pollen-like substance from the petals on its wings. This pollen has a potent tranquilizing effect, putting enemies to sleep or leaving them in a dazed, confused state. The sweet scent of the pollen can be overwhelming, lulling even the most ferocious opponents into a temporary, dream-like stupor.
  • Blossom Breeze: The Sakura Soarer has mastery over the wind, able to create gentle gusts or powerful gales that carry cherry blossom petals. These gusts can be used to carry the dragon higher into the sky or as a method of disorienting foes by swirling petals and wind around them, causing confusion and blocking their vision.
  • Graceful Agility: The Sakura Soarer is one of the most agile dragons in the sky. Its light, aerodynamic body allows it to maneuver with incredible speed and precision. It can change direction mid-flight with ease, making it nearly impossible for larger, slower dragons or enemies to catch it. This agility also makes it a master of dodging attacks, as it flits gracefully out of harm’s way.
  • Ethereal Camouflage: When in danger, the Sakura Soarer can blend into its surroundings by altering the color of its scales to match the sky, clouds, or surrounding trees. This ability allows it to become nearly invisible, particularly in areas with heavy cherry blossom trees or forests.

Temperament:

The Sakura Soarer is a gentle and serene dragon, known for its peaceful nature. It rarely engages in conflict unless provoked or threatened. Preferring the tranquility of the sky and the beauty of cherry blossom groves, it spends most of its time gliding through the air, enjoying the wind and the changing seasons.

Despite its peaceful demeanor, the Sakura Soarer can be fiercely protective of its territory and rider. If threatened, it will use its petal-based abilities to overwhelm and confuse enemies, creating enough time to either escape or strike back with precision. Its bond with its rider is one of quiet understanding and deep trust, as it prefers a companion who appreciates the beauty of the world around them.

Habitat:

The Sakura Soarer makes its home in regions filled with cherry blossom trees or other flowering plants. It is often found in temperate forests, glades, or mountain groves where the trees bloom in vivid colors during the spring. These dragons create their nests high up in the branches of these trees, where they blend in with the flowers and foliage.

During the springtime, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, Sakura Soarers are most active, using the natural cover of falling petals to hide and protect themselves. They are rarely seen in colder months, as they prefer the warmth and beauty of the blossoming season.

Bond with Rider:

Riders of the Sakura Soarer are often gentle souls who appreciate beauty and tranquility. They form deep, harmonious bonds with their dragons, relying on their quick reflexes and graceful movements to protect themselves in battle. These riders are known for their tactical minds, using the dragon’s abilities to confuse and incapacitate foes rather than relying on brute strength.

The connection between rider and Sakura Soarer is often peaceful and meditative, with the dragon encouraging its rider to remain calm and patient, even in the most dire situations. The two often develop an unspoken understanding, working together seamlessly to navigate both the skies and life’s challenges.

Tactics:

The Sakura Soarer excels in aerial combat, where its agility and speed make it a formidable opponent. Its ability to summon blinding storms of cherry blossoms and disorient enemies with its sweet-smelling pollen gives it a strong advantage against larger, slower dragons. In close combat, it uses its sharp talons and razor-edged petals to strike quickly and efficiently before retreating out of reach.

The Sakura Soarer prefers to outsmart its enemies, leading them into traps or confusing them with its abilities rather than engaging in prolonged combat. It often uses its ethereal camouflage to vanish mid-battle, only to reappear from an unexpected direction.

Sakura Soarers are elegant, mysterious dragons that embody the beauty and fragility of nature, while also wielding formidable powers to defend themselves and their riders. Their grace and intelligence make them highly valued companions, especially by those who value the quiet, ethereal beauty of the world.

Chapter 3: Tidefang

Chapter Text

Class: Tidal Class

(Tidefang dragons thrive in the aquatic environment, possessing mastery over the sea while retaining the ability to navigate the air. They are fierce predators of the ocean, renowned for their speed, strength, and aggressive nature.)

Appearance:

The Tidefang is a sleek, streamlined dragon designed for life in the water. Its body is long and muscular, covered in thick, iridescent scales that shimmer with hues of deep blue, green, and silver, giving it the appearance of a living wave. Its head is wedge-shaped, perfect for slicing through water at high speeds, and lined with several rows of sharp, piranha-like teeth. The jaws of a Tidefang are incredibly powerful, capable of snapping through tough scales and armor with ease.

The dragon’s fins are located along the sides of its body, fanning out like blades when swimming but folding against its body when it takes flight. These fins are flexible but strong, allowing the Tidefang to maneuver with precision underwater. Its wings, while similar to most dragons, are webbed like those of a bat, enabling it to perform quick, darting movements in both air and water.

Its tail is long, muscular, and ends in a flat, fin-like shape, which it uses to propel itself through the water or as a weapon, whipping it at enemies with immense force. The eyes of a Tidefang are narrow and predatory, glowing a fierce yellow that cuts through the darkness of the deep sea. When it surfaces or flies, water streams off its smooth scales in glistening arcs, a testament to its life in the ocean depths.

Abilities:

  • Aquatic Speed: The Tidefang is one of the fastest aquatic dragons, capable of moving through water with incredible speed and agility. It uses its powerful tail and fins to dart through the sea, making sharp turns and rapid movements to pursue prey or avoid attacks. Its speed allows it to strike quickly and retreat just as fast, making it difficult for opponents to catch or anticipate.
  • Tidal Surge: By summoning the power of the ocean, the Tidefang can create a powerful wave or surge of water, crashing into foes and overwhelming them with sheer force. This ability is especially useful in aquatic battles, where it can generate tsunamis or tidal waves to disorient and drown its enemies. The wave can also be used defensively, pushing foes away or blocking attacks.
  • Razor Bite: The Tidefang’s signature attack is its devastating bite. With rows of sharp, serrated teeth designed to rip through flesh and armor, the dragon can deliver deadly strikes to its enemies. The sheer force of its bite can crush bone and steel, making it one of the most dangerous predators in both water and air.
  • Tail Whip: The Tidefang’s tail is as deadly as its teeth. With a single lash of its muscular, finned tail, it can strike opponents with enough force to knock them off balance or send them flying. This attack is especially effective in close-quarters combat or when the dragon is underwater, where its tail can create shockwaves through the water.
  • Air and Water Agility: Although the Tidefang is primarily an aquatic dragon, it is also capable of flying. Its broad, webbed wings allow it to soar through the air with surprising agility, though it is not as fast as its flight-dedicated counterparts. The dragon’s true advantage comes in its ability to switch seamlessly between water and air, making it a versatile and unpredictable opponent.
  • Stealth Hunter: The Tidefang has the ability to blend into the deep sea, using its dark, reflective scales to camouflage against the ocean floor or in open water. It can lie in wait for unsuspecting prey, attacking with deadly precision when the moment is right. This stealth allows it to approach both enemies and prey unnoticed, striking before they even realize it’s there.

Temperament:

The Tidefang is an aggressive and territorial dragon, known for its fierce nature and predatory instincts. It has little patience for intruders in its territory, whether in the water or on land, and will often engage in battle to defend its domain. However, despite its aggression, the Tidefang can form a deep, loyal bond with a rider who earns its respect. Once a bond is formed, the dragon is incredibly protective and will go to great lengths to defend its rider.

While the Tidefang prefers solitude or the company of its rider, it is not inherently cruel. It hunts for survival and defends itself when necessary, but it does not seek out conflict unnecessarily. It is highly intelligent, capable of assessing threats and using its environment to its advantage in combat, making it a fearsome and cunning opponent.

Habitat:

The Tidefang is most commonly found in coastal regions, particularly near rocky cliffs and deep sea caves. It prefers to live in areas where it has access to both the ocean and the sky, giving it the freedom to switch between swimming and flying as needed. These dragons make their homes in large, underwater caverns where they can store their treasures and raise their young in safety.

They are also known to inhabit deep sea trenches and areas where the ocean is particularly turbulent, such as whirlpools or underwater geysers. These dangerous environments suit the Tidefang’s aggressive nature and provide a natural defense against other predators or rival dragons.

Bond with Rider:

Riders of the Tidefang are often daring, bold individuals who seek adventure and danger. Bonding with a Tidefang is not for the faint of heart, as the dragon’s aggressive and territorial nature requires a rider who can match its intensity and command respect. However, once the bond is established, the Tidefang becomes a fiercely loyal companion, willing to fight to the death to protect its rider.

The rider must be skilled in both aquatic and aerial combat, as the Tidefang requires a partner who can navigate the seas as well as the skies. This bond is often tested in dangerous, high-stakes situations, where the rider must prove their strength and resourcefulness to maintain the trust of their dragon.

Tactics:

In battle, the Tidefang excels in hit-and-run tactics, using its speed and agility to outmaneuver opponents and strike from unexpected angles. It often begins combat with a tidal surge or by stealthily approaching its target from the water. Once close enough, it will unleash its devastating bite or use its powerful tail to incapacitate foes.

The Tidefang is particularly dangerous in aquatic environments, where its speed and mastery of the water give it a distinct advantage. However, it is also capable of engaging in aerial combat when necessary, using its webbed wings to outfly slower opponents and deliver quick, precise strikes before retreating to the water.

The Tidefang is a deadly and unpredictable dragon, embodying the raw power of the ocean. With its fierce temperament and impressive array of abilities, it is a force to be reckoned with both in the water and in the air.

Chapter 4: Woollymorne

Chapter Text

Class: Boulder Class

(Woollymorne dragons are heavily armored and slow-moving but possess great strength, fitting well into the Boulder Class.)

Appearance:

The Woollymorne is a stocky, sheep-like dragon with a thick, woolly coat that covers most of its body, making it look round and fluffy. Its wool is incredibly dense, providing insulation against cold environments and acting as natural armor to absorb blows. The dragon’s head features two large, curved horns similar to a ram's, which it uses to charge at enemies. Its wings are short and stubby, but they allow the Woollymorne to glide short distances, though it prefers to stay on the ground.

The dragon's wool can change colors depending on the season, ranging from snowy white in winter to a grassy green in spring, helping it blend into its environment.

Abilities:

  • Wool Defense: The Woollymorne's wool is not only soft but incredibly tough, acting like a thick layer of armor that protects it from sharp objects and attacks.
  • Ram Charge: Using its strong horns and thick skull, the Woollymorne can perform a powerful charging attack, barreling through enemies or obstacles.
  • Fluff Burst: When threatened, the Woollymorne can release tufts of wool into the air, which create a smokescreen-like effect to confuse or obscure enemies.
  • Boulder Roll: The Woollymorne can tuck its legs in and roll like a boulder down hills, using its wool as padding to gather speed and crush enemies or obstacles in its path.

Temperament:

The Woollymorne is generally a docile and peaceful dragon, much like sheep. It prefers grazing in meadows and highland areas, but when provoked, it becomes highly defensive. Its natural tendency is to avoid conflict, but if cornered, it will use its charging abilities to protect itself and its rider.

Habitat:

Woollymornes are commonly found in cold, mountainous regions where their thick wool provides ample protection from the elements. They enjoy grazing on grassy plains and high cliffs, and they often gather in herds for warmth and protection.

Rider Bond:

Because of their calm nature, Woollymorne dragons form strong bonds with their riders, especially those who are patient and gentle. Once bonded, they become highly protective, often staying close to their rider and ensuring their safety with their strong, defensive capabilities.

Chapter 5: Bristleback

Chapter Text

Class: Sharp Class

(Bristlebacks are fierce, fast-moving dragons with sharp tusks and spikes, fitting the aggressive nature of the Sharp Class.)

Appearance:

The Bristleback is a muscular, stocky dragon with thick, bristly scales that resemble the fur of a wild boar. Its body is low to the ground, built for charging and ramming through obstacles. The dragon has large, curved tusks protruding from its snout, similar to a wild boar’s, and a row of sharp, spiked ridges running down its back and tail. These bristles and spikes help defend the Bristleback from predators and enemies.

The dragon’s wings are smaller compared to other species, allowing for short bursts of flight, but it prefers to charge on the ground, using its powerful legs and tusks to barrel through opponents. The Bristleback's scales can vary in color, from dark brown to grey or even a dark reddish hue, blending in with forest environments.

Abilities:

  • Tusk Charge: The Bristleback can lower its head and charge at full speed, using its tusks to pierce through enemies or knock down large obstacles. This ability is its primary offensive move, and it’s devastating when combined with its heavy body weight.
  • Bristle Barrage: The sharp bristles on the Bristleback's back can be flared up and launched in all directions, like quills, to strike at enemies from a distance. These bristles grow back over time, providing the dragon with a natural ranged defense.
  • Ground Slam: Using its powerful legs, the Bristleback can stomp or slam the ground, creating shockwaves that knock down or disorient nearby enemies.
  • Tough Hide: Much like a wild boar, the Bristleback’s thick, armored hide makes it difficult to wound, allowing it to take significant damage before being worn down.

Temperament:

The Bristleback is fiercely territorial and aggressive, much like its wild boar inspiration. It doesn’t back down from a fight and will charge headfirst into danger to defend itself or its rider. However, when not threatened, the Bristleback can be surprisingly loyal and protective, forming strong bonds with riders who can match its intensity and respect its independent nature.

Habitat:

Bristlebacks are commonly found in dense forests, swamps, and mountainous regions where they can hide and charge through the underbrush with ease. They prefer environments with plenty of space to roam and tend to build nests in secluded areas, away from other dragons.

Rider Bond:

Bristlebacks are not easy dragons to bond with due to their aggressive and stubborn nature, but once a rider earns their trust, they are fiercely loyal. A Bristleback*will protect its rider at all costs and can be a valuable partner in battle, especially for riders who prefer to engage in close-quarters combat.

Because of their relentless nature, riders of Bristlebacks are often known for their bravery and fearlessness, relying on their dragon’s brute strength and unyielding determination.
