Work Text:

Alec sat on the edge of his partner’s bed, his fingers nervously fiddling with the smooth silk sheets beneath him. The fabric glided between his fingers, a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing in his mind. Anxiety churned within him, a tempest of uncertainty and fear that seemed impossible to calm. Across the room, his partner, Magnus, flipped through a fashion magazine, completely engrossed in the vibrant pages and seemingly oblivious to Alec’s inner conflict. They were enjoying a rare day off together, but for Alec, the weight of unspoken words felt heavier than ever.

He knew he needed to be the one to bring it up; he had put it off long enough. Taking a deep breath, he finally mustered the courage to speak. “Hey, Mags?” he said, his voice soft and tentative, as if he were testing the waters.

Magnus glanced up, his bright cat-like eyes filled with curiosity and concern. “Yes, Alexander? Are you okay? You seem distant tonight.”

Alec sighed, the anxiety tightening its grip around his chest like a vise. “I… I’ve been thinking a lot lately.”

“About what?” Magnus set the magazine aside, shifting his full attention to Alec. The change in his demeanor was palpable, and Alec felt the warmth of his partner’s care envelop him like a protective shield.

“About us,” he admitted, his gaze dropping to the floor as shame washed over him. “I’m worried that… that you might start losing interest in me.”

Magnus’s brow furrowed in confusion, concern etched into his features. “Why would you think that?”

Alec struggled to find the right words, his throat feeling dry. “Because… because I’m not ready to take the next step in our relationship.” The admission hung heavy in the air, his heart racing as he waited for Magnus's response.

Understanding and compassion dawned in Magnus’s eyes as he realized what Alec must be referring to. “You mean… the sex step?” he asked gently.

Alec nodded, relief washing over him as the weight of his secret lifted from his shoulders. “Yeah, that. I just… I need more time.”

Magnus reached out, gently taking Alec’s hand in his, the touch warm and reassuring. “Alexander, you need not be embarrassed. I understand.”

“You do?” Alec asked, surprised by Magnus’s calm reaction.

Magnus nodded, a soft smile playing on his lips. “Of course, darling. Everyone has their own boundaries, and it’s important to respect them. If you think that something as trivial as sex will change the way I feel about you, then your mind is playing tricks on you. I’m not going anywhere, Alec. I care about you, no matter what.”

Tears welled up in Alec’s eyes as he felt a rush of gratitude and love for Magnus. “Thank you,” he whispered hoarsely, overwhelmed by the compassion radiating from his partner.

Magnus pulled Alec into a warm embrace, holding him close. “You don’t ever have to apologize for being honest about your feelings, Alec. That’s what a healthy relationship is all about. I want you to feel comfortable being honest with me.”

Alec buried his face in Magnus’s shoulder, feeling a profound sense of relief wash over him. For the first time in weeks, he felt like he could breathe again. The walls he had built around his heart began to crumble, replaced by the understanding and acceptance that flowed between them.

As they held each other in silence, Alec’s mind began to clear, his worries fading into the background. He knew that he had made the right decision by opening up to Magnus, by being honest about his fears and insecurities. Each heartbeat echoed the truth that their love was deeper than physical intimacy; it was built on trust, respect, and an unshakeable bond.

“Hey, Mags?” Alec spoke up after a while, his voice muffled against Magnus’s shoulder.

“Yes, love?” Magnus replied, his fingers tracing soothing patterns on Alec’s back, a calming rhythm that anchored them both.

“I love you,” Alec said, his voice filled with sincerity and warmth.

Magnus pulled back slightly, his cat-like eyes shining with emotion. “I love you too, darling. And nothing will ever change that.”

The sincerity in Magnus’s voice wrapped around Alec like a soft blanket, enveloping him in a sense of security he had longed for. They sat together in companionable silence, their hearts intertwined in a bond that was stronger than any physical connection could ever be.

After a moment, Magnus broke the silence. “You know, there’s no rush, Alec. I want you to feel ready when that time comes. We can take things at your pace.”

Alec looked into Magnus’s eyes, searching for any hint of frustration or impatience, but all he saw was warmth and love. “Really? You’re okay with that?”

“Of course,” Magnus replied, a gentle smile gracing his lips. “I will wait for you. Your comfort is what matters most to me. I don’t want you to feel pressured. I want this to be something beautiful for both of us when the time is right.”

His words wrapped around Alec like a protective shield, easing the knots of anxiety that had taken residence in his stomach. “I appreciate that more than you know,” Alec said, his voice trembling with emotion. “I just… I worry that you’ll get bored, that you’ll want more than I can give.”

Magnus shook his head, his expression earnest. “Alec, boredom is the last thing I feel when I’m with you. Every moment spent with you is a treasure. The laughter, the late-night talks, the way you light up when you talk about something you love—it all makes me feel alive.”

The sincerity in Magnus’s voice struck a chord deep within Alec. He felt the warmth of those words wrap around his heart, dispelling the shadows of doubt that had clouded his mind. “I just want to be enough for you,” Alec admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.

“You are more than enough,” Magnus reassured him, leaning in to press a gentle kiss on Alec’s forehead. “You are everything to me. And I promise, no matter how long it takes, I will be here, patiently waiting.”

As the weight of his insecurities began to lift, Alec smiled through his tears, feeling lighter than he had in weeks. “Thank you for being so understanding,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.

“Always,” Magnus replied, his tone unwavering. “We’re a team, remember? We’ll navigate this together, one step at a time.”

In that moment, Alec felt a renewed sense of hope. The fear that had gripped him began to fade, replaced by the understanding that love was not a race; it was a journey. And he was grateful to have Magnus by his side, willing to walk that path together, no matter how long it took.

As they settled back into the comforting silence of the room, wrapped in each other’s warmth, Alec knew that he had made the right choice in opening his heart. In Magnus, he had found not just a partner, but a confidant, a protector, and the love of his life.

And so, in the soft glow of the late afternoon light filtering through the curtains, Alec felt a sense of peace wash over him. Together, they could face anything. And in the embrace of their love, he found the courage to be exactly who he was, knowing that Magnus would be waiting, always.
