Next to each other, was warmth.
Next to each other, was safety.
Next to each other, was pain.
Hidden in a place they could not be found. Nestled so close.
Thin delicate fingers tracing artificial skin. Heads pressed together. Soothing prayers and whispers. Black boxes thrumming, as close as possible. Yet even this was too distant. Impossibly far.
Within each other they swam, free from all obligations. Free from all boundaries. Free to feel emotions. Within each other, they explored. Intertwined in their oceans.
Her mind, a labyrinth of secrets and regrets. Shame. Loneliness. Hidden so poorly. Bared for him to see.
His mind, crumbling and fragmented. Simmering rage still eating away. Slow to rebuild. Memories guarded like shining jewels.
But together, they became whole. Together…they could heal.
Within her. So many deaths. So many greetings. All his face.
Within him. So many deaths. So much destruction. All in her name.
It was still so raw. Still so fresh.
But here. Here it was only them. Just the warmth of sharing. Of being.
The warmth would become flaming anger and sinking guilt. Hands around throats, squeezing, breaking.
Dented skin and exposed panels and blurred vision. All before whispered apologies commenced. The hands never left their place.
Pain was integral now. As much as they hated it. A part of what they were.
There was no more cycle. This was their last. This was all they had left. To cherish.
