Chapter 1: First Act
Chapter Text
I stepped off the boat and onto the dock of Dolle Harbor, imminently squinting — damn it's bright out here — at how bright it was and with my eyes still trying to adjust to the brightness of the sun. It was now I wondered in this moment why had chosen Kukan'yu Kingdom to start over. And because my eyes were closed I wasn’t watching where I was going so I ended up bumping into someone. After studying myself and my eyes adjusting to the sun. I go to adjust the big red scarf, making sure that it's still wrapped securely around my neck. As I sigh in relief as I feel the familiar feeling of my companion coiling around my neck.
I focused on not letting my bloodlust show, trying to not care that this was just about the fifteenth time someone else — well, i think I bumped into this person but what ever — has bumped to to me.
It was a man that was on the heavier side, yet still slightly taller than me. He was wearing a white shirt with a red tunic that had these white and red stripes on the front, along with a pair of jeans and a pair of brown boots. He had a big, blonde, scruffy beard and his nose was red for some reason.
My eyes met the eyes of this man and then I lifted my eyes slightly higher seeing a white hat with a little blue whale adorning the strap of his hat just above the rim. That hat… Ah. So this man must be a captain. Cool.
I use my Ren to see if he is of importance or not. His aura is a strong one, and it seems hes keeping it sealed… so he must know Nen? With my newly released free will, this shall be my first interaction.
I reach into the breast pocket of my dress shirt and take out the pre-written notecards I prepared for this excursion. I don’t believe that this man is quite worthy enough for me to speak to him. As I shuffle for the cards, looking for a certain one, I can sense his eyes on me, giving me a once over, once… twice… and then one last time before he spoke.
“Ah hello there, you must be here for the Hunter exam, right? I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before.”
…
…
…
What?
Ok. Hold on a minute. I put my hand up in a hold-on motion as I go through my cards once more now looking for a different one.
‘What's that?’
“Huh? What, ya mean the Hunter Exam?”
‘Yeah.’
“You're telling me that you haven't heard of the Hunter Exam? Have you been living under a rock?” He said giving me a sceptical look.
“Ah well…” I muttered to myself, the scarf around my neck — and subsequently the lower half of my face — muffling what I had said.
I had no clue what the Hunter Exam was. Nor did I care, but it seemed like something interesting enough.
I pick out another note card, ‘Should I do it?’
The man gave me a look that I couldn’t quite decipher and then sighed. “I mean I don’t know, do ya want to?” He asked me.
‘Should I do it?’ I show him the card again. Come on, just give me an order… oh wait shit, I need to make my own decisions.
Yes, I have free will
Deciding that I would indeed take the Hunters Exam I walked off and put the note cards back into my breast pocket. I assume the docks are so crowded because of this exam thing going on.
As I walked through the crowd I noticed that the majority of the crowd were men. Big, weapon-welding men. They all seemed to get off of that strange man's boat just then and made their way to some kind of tour bus. I see a few going in the opposite direction. Odd.
“Huh… ok I guess,” I mutter to myself as I follow the crowd and end up entering the bus. Apparently from what I heard this bus will be taking us away from the docks and to Zaban City. That name sounds familiar — oh and not to mention this Hunters Exam will be taking place here so… that too I guess —. I make my way towards the back of the bus, snagging an empty seat. After a few more people got on the bus it had began to move, so I look out the window as the bus started to move.
I watched as the bus made its way from the docks and into the city. I look at the people outside going on with their day when the bus stopped, the applicants making their way off the bus.
Hmmm… I guess I follow them then.
However when I got off the bus me and the group of Hunter applicants stood there not knowing what to do.
Well shit…
Sigh…
I start to walk off from the group of applicants to go in some random direction. The men had seemed surprised that I had even been there. I must be really good at being quiet. As I walked farther into the crowded streets I thought I heard them ask me something or call out to me but I didn’t really care enough to look back.
The streets of Zaban City were filled with all sorts of things. There were many pop-up stands, shop openings, and lots of people — a hellish amount if you ask me —. There were all sorts of things being sold, from “Rare” and “Ancient” artifacts, to different kinds of foods, and there were even “Fortune tellers”. Damn this place is sechy At some point, I had turned to see a man at one of the stands gathering wondering eyes and glances as he was selling some kind of frog on a stick.
… How odd. Now I'm hungry, how annoying.
I walked over to get a closer look to see how much the frog things cost when I realized that I didn’t have any Jenny on me. What a bother. Well, maybe I can –
CRASH!
I stumbled mid-step, catching on someone's shoulder — ew — and immediately took it back holding it in front of me giving the person I caught myself on a disgusted glare, causing him to scurry away. Whoever rammed into me was strong. Strong enough to cause me to stumble, usually I don't even budge.
I sigh as I turn to see who bumped into me.
As I turned around I went to adjust my scarf and make sure it was still over my mouth. I look down to see a little boy on the ground. The boy had dark green hair that was standing up in every which way with honey brown eyes and a huge smile on his face as he began to stand up and dust himself off.
“Hi, I’m Gon. I’m really sorry that I bumped into you, mister.” He said as he looked up at me with his overly excited expression, holding onto the straps of his backpack and a… fishing rod?
Ah, a child. I use my Ren, and It seems that the boy's aura is strong… but not concealed, nor as strong as mine. He mustn't know Nen yet.
…
…
…
Did this brat just call me mister? Well, actually I can't even be mad at that. Before my journey here I had cut my hair a shit ton and my outfit doesn’t scream female either. Oh well, I guess that couldn’t be helped.
I go into my breast pocket and shuffle through the cards again.
‘It’s ok.’
It seemed like the little boy was going to ask me something — most likely if I were mute or not — but was interrupted by someone calling out for him.
“What do you think you're doing Gon? Let’s go!” A tall man in a dark blue suit called out farther in the crowd. He was holding a red and black checkered suitcase over his shoulder with a death grip as if someone would just sweep by and take it. And honestly, I can't blame him, the people around here look suspicious.
Behind him was a man with some kind of tribal getup and had almost shoulder-length hair, and next to him stood a blonde girl-boy? with the same length of hair and was wearing a deep blue tabard with what looked to be an all-white training uniform underneath.
Well, this is quite the group…
“Oh hey mister, are you taking the Hunters Exam too?” The boy asked me, an excited tone in his voice and a gleam in his eyes as he looked up at me.
Ah, this exam thing again… what is so important about it? Well, maybe they know where it is. I don’t bother going through the cards again, instead just nodding in affirmation.
“Hay! That's not fair! We had to go through your whole trial to have you be our navigator, just for this guy to run into us and join our group!?” The tall man with the suit yelled.
I glance over at the man in the tribal get up and something clicked. Ah, so I’m guessing that that man isn’t a part of this little group but someone to take them to the Exam. Navigator.
“No Leorio, calm down.” The girl — wait… no boy? — said, placing a hand on the taller man's shoulder. The blonde is the calm one then. I’ll keep that to memory.
“No kurapika, it wouldn't be fair to us. And plus he wouldn’t be able to come with us because he hasn’t passed our navigator’s test.” The tall men — Leorio — said. He’s beginning to become annoying. Truly a nuisance…
I let my blood lust seep from my body, the air around me, and the group of boys — plus maybe a girl? — thickening with tension.
I saw the tall man's face shift from anger to confusion then to wariness. I caught a glimpse of the examiner's expression, his eyes widening as he stared at me… ah so he knows Nen too?
“No, no I believe that he is worthy of taking the exam. He’s made it this far after all. He's so close to the exam site anyway, it would only be far.” The navigator said giving me a brief nod as he turned and continued walking.
I contained my bloodlust instantly, as I began to follow the man, decidedly less annoyed.
“WAIT WHAT!” The tall man exclaimed.
I shuffle through my cards once more before turning to glare at him, showing him the card.
‘Shut up’
“Hay!” The man yelled, It seemed as if he were going to say something else but I didn’t bother to listen to him as I faced back forward and ignored him.
Kurapika — nah, I think I'll call ‘em or maybe her? Pika — walking next to him, it seemed as if they were just barely coming to their laughter.
And then there is Gon, who just seemed ecstatic that I was going with them. As we walked, my hands were getting a lovely little workout as the boy kept asking me all sorts of things…
“So, what's your name mister?”
‘Seo-Rin’
“That's a nice name. Where are you from?”
‘Can't say’
“Why do you want to be a hunter?”
I think for a moment at that. Ah, this one, I don't think I have a card for yet.
‘Not really sure’ I show him the card while shrugging my shoulders.
“Oh, would you like to know why I want to be a Hunter?” He asked me with a kind smile on his face.
That smile, it reminds me of… my oldest child. Why does my heart ache at such a reminder?
I nod, a small smile forming under the scarf.
“Well, my dad is a Hunter and I want to become a Hunter too. The same as him if possible. I want to know what's so important about being a Hunter.” Gon said, a gleam of determination in his eyes.
…cute. He definitely reminds me of my daughter.
I reach over to pat the top of his head. Yes, I think that's a fair reason to do this Hunter Exam.
“Mhm” I hum, letting him know that I had listened.
After that he seemed content with walking next to me in silence. The tall man and Pika seemed to be talking about something not important enough to really eavesdrop on. And the navigator guy was looking around as he walked in front of the group, occasionally looking down at what I could only assume to be the address of the exam site.
Hmmm… I feel the feminine urge to take the paper and run. But the voice of reason in my head says that wouldn't be the best idea, so I don't think I'll be doing that.
As we walked through the sea of people, we ended up reaching an space where there were less people the in the crowded streets we were just in. Thank goodness, if another person had bumped into me — more like fucking shoulder check me — with out apologizing I was sure I was going to tare their arms off.
As I yet again calmed my bloodlust and my thoughts, the navigator came to a stop in front of me and the group.
“Here we are. I'm pretty sure that's the building.” He said pointing to a little Roman shop in front of him.
Oh… what? Wait, a Roman shop? What is this Hunters Exam?
And as I looked over to the others I realized that I must have been the only one to get the memo because they were staring in awe at this really big white building next to where the navigator had pointed.
Ah well, yeah. I guess that dose look more like an exam hall of some kind?
They begin to walk up to the taller building talking nonsense about how exciting it was to finally take the Hunters Exam.
But I start to quietly snicker to myself when once the others realize that the building they were about to enter — with all the confidence in the world— wasn't the one, but the little Roman shop next to it.
Fucking hilarious…
I walk over to the door of the a shop contemplating weather I should hold the door for them or not but my body moved to hold the door open before I could think any farther on the matter.
I walked in as our navigator as asked if the back room was open for some reason. This place looked so small from the outside. Ooo, maybe the exam in underground that would be something. Oh what if…
I was brought back by a small tug on the hem of my — overly oversized — dress shirt. I look down to see Gon looking up at me. Huh, I must have zoned out.
“Rin, come on, let’s go take the exam.” He said in an enthusiastic and excited tone.
We walk into the back room. It looked like any other private room in a Roman place. It had a round table and four chairs in the middle, I walked over and sat down in one of them — dang, I've been walking just about all day haven't I? —.
I decided to put my head down, rest the ingredients on the table and I move my scarf up slightly to use as a makeshift pillow, making sure its still over my mouth. I hear the navigator tell us to wait here. Ok, I can wait here. I tried.
“For what? Where are all the other applicants?” I heard the tall man ask.
“I can't wait for that combo!” I hear Gon add-in.
…What combo. Danm, this is why I need to stop zoning out.
“Gon, that was just a password to get us inside.” Pika clarified. Ah, that's what they were talking about then.
“Only one in ten thousand. You’re very lucky.” I hear the navigator say causing me to turn my head still resting in my arms.
“Hmm?” I hummed in question.
“That's how many ever make it this far. So considering that, you did great for first timers.” He clarified as he looked at all of us, his eyes resting on me a little longer then the others as if asking a question.
Have I done this before? No. Not that I can remember…
I shake me head no to his unspoken question. In response he nodded turning away as he turned and wished us luck. But Gon had ended up thanking the man and shaking his hand.
“I hope that… next year, I can help you all again.” He said as he closed the door behind him, leaving us in the room.
He was nice I guess.
Sigh…
BANG!
It began to feel as if the room was falling, or rather… slowly going down? Ah, an elevator then, so it seems my guess was right. The Hunters Exam will be underground.
“Tch, That bastard thinks he’ll see us again next year because he expects us to fail.” I heard the tall man say as he sat down across from me and Gon sitting next to me with a smile on his face… sweet boy.
Oh yeah. He did say he would like to help us next year. Jeez have some faith… well, in me at least.
“Once every three years. That's how often a rookie passes the exam.” Pika spoke.
I sit up at that and take out my cards, ‘Really’
He nodded, “Yeah. Some can’t handle it. It’s too mentally and physically taxing. Then there are veterans, who break the rookies into never retaking the exam.”
“So that's why people who want to e Hunters are willing to risk everything for it,” Gon added.
“You bit the nail right on the head, my little friend!” Leorio exclaimed.
“Being a hunter means making more money than anyone in the world!” He continued.
“Wrong!” Pika cut in. People become Hunters to join the world's most noble profession.
“Shut up goody-goody.”
Oop.
“Selfish money grubber!”
This is getting good.
The two, for some reason then go on and on about convincing Gon to become either kind of Hunter. Poor kid.
Just as Gon begins to sink into his chair about to say something when the elevator comes to a halt.
Sigh…
Thank goodness. I thought started to think those two would never shut up.
Me and Gon get up from our seats, going to stand in front of the door. Think goodness I thought that those two would never shut up.
Me and Gon get up from our seats, going to stand in front of the door of the elevator waiting for it to open.
This is it. I've made it… my new life.
For a moment I look down at Gon, who stood next to me. His hands were clenched tightly on the straps of his backpack.
… he seemed nervous.
I place a hand on is shoulder, causing him to look up at me, a question in his eyes I give him a small smile from under my scarf that he seemed to have noticed because he smiled back, his grip on the straps loosening a little.
While I don't have a true reason for doing this, — other than my newly regained free will — he does. And with that being said, I think I would like to help this boy pass this Hunters Exam, and maybe even pass it myself. From the tall man and Pika’s arguing earlier I heard them talk about being able to basically do anything with consequence.
And I believe that… that could be useful.
I sigh…
I reach for my pen along with a blank note card, the action catching the others attention.
‘We've got this’
As I show them the card the air felt less tense and the others smiled, a glint of determination in their eyes.
“We've got this!” they say in unison as we hear a beep and the doors of the elevator begin to open.
This… will be my first act of true free will.
Let's hope it's a good one…

Chapter 2: Danger X Memories X Begin
Chapter Text
The elevator doors begin to open revealing a huge tunnel-like room. The tunnel was made completely concrete but the ground was seemingly dirt. There were dim lights along the high ends of the higher parts of the rounded walls, pipes adorning either side of the room.
Interesting setup we’ve got here…
The others walked out and I did the same, being sure to be the last to walk out. And as soon as I did I stumbled backwards…
The others paused turning to look at me, the tall man asking if I was fine. I simply nodded waving my hand as to wave away their concerns. The group didn’t seem as though they believed her especially Gon, but turned back around and walked farther into the dim room.
T- that aura… it's strong. Stronger than I have felt in a while. The owner of this aura must be really cocky, no… confident. Wait, wait, wait. No. Two, I sense two incredibly strong auras, although one is seemingly more controlled than the other... these two’s bloodlusts are immaculate…
My knees felt as though they would give out as I walked to the rest of the group. I use my Zetus, completely closing my nodes so as to not be noticed along with my — ever harder to control, now that I’m here — bloodlust.
“Is it me or is the mood here pretty grim?” The tall man asked us. I nod along absent-mindedly at that, agreeing but not fully there. I go to stand behind the tall man, crouching slightly. He looked down at me in confusion as I stood small behind him and looked at the surrounding crowd. Mentally I felt like a child standing behind my mother when standing in a new place. I looked around him and into the large mass of people, searching for the source of the main overwhelming.
I feel a tap on my knee. I look down to see a little green jelly bean thing in a suit. And it handed me a small fist-sized badge with the number 406 on it.
I take it as I look to the rest of the group seeing that they all also had tags.
403… Leorio
404… Kurapika
405… Gon
406… Me
“Be sure to wear this on your person at all times, please. And do be careful not to lose it, okay?” The green thing said before walking off into the crowd. What an odd thing, and when did it even get over here? Ah, I must have zoned out again. Goddanm it. As I clipped the badge to my shirt, the others following suit, I couldn’t help but wonder when that thing had gotten here. I didn’t sense it, but then again I must have zoned out again. Danm it.
Sigh…
I need a break.
I stand back up from my crushed precision from behind Leorio and go to stand next to Gon. But as I do I hear a voice calling from above. We look up to see a man jump down from one of the pipes — how the hell did he even get up there, does he know Nen? — along the sides of the room and make his way toward us. I use my Ren… ah, his aura is simply too weak.
He had tanned skin and was wearing a blue shirt with a white long-sleeve undershirt. I look at his badge, number 16.
Dang, he must have been here for quite a while then.
“I don’t think I’ve seen you guys here before so ya must be new right?”
“Huh, how did you know this is our first attempt?” Gon questioned.
“Well, this would be my thirty-fifth attempt, so it comes with the territory.” Number 16 said, in an overly proud tone as he scratched the back of his head.
The tree in front of me gasped out at that, “Thirty-five times!?” they all yelled.
Huh… So this man has failed this weird exam that many times? Ok, so either this Hunters Exam is tough or this man keeps retaking it for an ulterior motive. My bets on the latter…
“I guess you could say I’m a Hunter Exam veteran.” The man said, still in that overly cheery tone.
Veteran? Wait, I look over to Kurapika to see him eyeing the man, I’m assuming to see if he can be trusted. Yeah, didn’t he just say not to trust the veterans in this place or something like that?
“Well, that's not something to be proud about…” I heard Leorio mutter to himself, and I couldn’t help but agree with him mentally.
“And hey, if you need anything or have any questions I’d be happy to help. What can I say I’m a sucker for helping out rookies. Oh, I’m Tompa by the way.” He finished with an almost sheepish smile.
“Oh, I’m Gon!” Gon started, “And these are my friends, Kurapika, Leorio, and Rin.”
Me and the others nodded in hello. I take a card and my pen out to — make a distraction to leave — ask a question. I don’t trust this man, I’ll stick to what Pika said about the veteran-crushing rookies. I briefly looked over to Gon as I wrote, feeling a little guilty for leaving him so soon. But in the elevator things got a little too sentimental and if they can't see the bad intent oozing off this guy then they’ll need to learn the hard way.
Sigh…
‘Are there more like you?’
“Ah, well while I do hold the record there are others I have seen before. For instance…”
He then began to go through other applicants who had been here before and I decided that it was as good a time as any to make my exit. I’ll be back later, but for now, I think I want to go and find where that lovely arua is from…
As I make my way through the crowd, looking around at the many different applicants. I have seen and met many different people in my life, but these people had an air to them. Then I lessen my Zetsu the slightest bit to use my Ren, glancing around, I glance around seeing the man people’s thin auras. Pathetic, oh well at least none of these guys are imedent cause of those bloodlusts.
Click…
Clack…
Click…
Clack…
What is that sound?
I pause mid-step nearly bumping into someone as I look around the crowd again. I am far too short, and all these men are far too tall. A man bumps into me, causing him to stumble slightly. He glared at me for a moment before scampering off somewhere… Huh? I see a few other people begin to get out of the way of a person walking by.
Click…
Clack…
Click…
Wait, that noise, that aura. It’s not the cocky overwhelming one… this one is deeper, more like a big body of water just waiting for me to jump in so it could drown me. It was a dark purple color. As the people parted I saw a tall man — maybe 6 foot or so — with skin color resembling someone who couldn’t breathe. He had squinted red eyes — but a lighter shader compared to mine — and a mohawk — I think? — in this pretty shade of blue, he was also wearing this honored green outfit, which I don’t even know how to describe. And not to mention…
Those needles. I shivered as I followed suit in letting him pass, his constant click clacks accompanied by an occasional twitch as he walked past. I hate needles, and that man has them all over his face… and those buttons on his top are also needles. Hmm, I wonder if that's his preferred choice of weapon.
Sigh…
Well at least I found one of two bloodlusts… now, where is the other one?
…
…
…
Eh. It can wait, I think I’ve gotten a good look at the competition and I’m guessing that… wait what was his name again? Well whoever it was told Gon and the others about who to look out for, so I’ll just ask them.
I start to make my way through the crowd, my smaller frame and shorter stature making it — So, so much — easier to make my way through. Ah, there they are. I smile to myself as I see Gon, Leorio, Kurapika, and… number 16.
Huh, It seems I’ve become attached to the group. Especially the youngest one, Gon. He reminds me too much of Yuri… and I can’t alo–
I stop mid-step at the overwhelming push of Bloodlust. I wiped my head around looking for who the hell it was coming from and noticed a man bump into a figure. From what I could see the other man was about a head taller and had pink-ish hair. Danm it, the curse of being short.
I watch as the man rudely walks past and doesn’t apologize, causing the pink-haired ham to turn around with a smirk.
Huh… well it seems I’ve found the other source of the Nen. His Nen was thick and had a pinkish tint to it. And he seemed pretty–
“Ahhhhhhhhh!!!”
– pissed someone bumped into him… Huh.
“My. How unusual.” I heard the taller man say as I saw the man that had bumped into him fall to his knees and his arms… disappearing!?
I start to once again make my way through the people, I notice people who had formed a a circle around two figures in the center. I made the executive decision to shove my way towards the edge of the circle. She stood nearly behind a tall bald man with a sharp nose. He had broad shoulders and… ooo a red scarf. He looked down at me and smiled slightly. Red scarf buddies. I smile back, though he wasn’t able to see it…
I look back at the commotion infrunt of me my eyes widening slightly in aw and shock at wat I was looking at.
The man who was on his knees was still screaming in pain and for a good reason too. I saw too far away to see why but now I get it. I watch in intrigue as the man's arms slowly begin to disappear, starting from where his hands were and up his arm, blood and small chunks of flesh falling onto the floor as his arms turned into, umm. Little hot pink flowers — or maybe flower petals? —.
“Seems this poor man’s arms have turned into flower petals. Now you see them, now you don’t” The man said in that — overly smooth fucking — voice.
As I watch the gruesome sight in front of me with wide admiring eyes, I just barely manage to contain my Bloodlust. But I had let a little slip — which I impatiently fixed — and before I knew it I felt a sharp pair of eyes on me.
I look at the man standing over him and…
Sigh… Well. I left my eyes on the man on the floor and on the man standing over him.
“Danm…” I said to myself as I looked up at the man who seemingly was the cause of the scene in front of me.
He was a tall, pale man in what I’m going to guess is a Jesters outfit, the top having a spade and a club on it. And my god this man's face. He had both a teal teardrop and a hot pink star under either one of his yellow — well, no. more like gold — eyes. All that paired with a lovely head of Fuchsia hair… truly a lovely color.
His eyes locked on mine and he smirked. My goodness, that smirk… Then he winks and begins to walk away.
“You should be more careful. And do apologize if you bump into someone.”
And with that, I watch as the jester walks and disappears back into the crowd. I remember his badge number. 44. And the other one is 301. Well, I guess I need to keep an eye on Gon and the others. Their auras are strong — especially Gon’s — so I need to keep them in my sights as well.
Sigh… I should have just kept to myself, or gone back to my mother so she could get me, someone, to follow. What a bother.
I begin to walk away, trying to find my little group. Surely they have missed me after I kind of just ghosted them as soon as we got here.
As it starts to get a little clearer I see the Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio leaning against the wall conversing.
Gon spots me walking up to them and he smiles big and waves me over, causing the others to turn and look at me, waving in greeting.
“Rin where have you been?” Gon asked as I leaned against the wall next to him, deciding to instead sit as I slid down it into a sitting position.
‘Around’ I show him the card.
That seemed to be a good enough answer for him considering the way he smiled down at me and went back to whatever they had been talking about before I had walked up.
Hmmp… This is boring. There's nothing to do. My mind ended up drifting to the weird jester and the even wielder needle guy. Out of all of the other applicants here, those two are the most dangerous here. Although, there are a few whose auras are strong enough as to where they have promising potential.
I glance at Gon for a moment before closing my eyes with a sigh. Welp, there's not a lot to do… and who knows how long we’ll be here.
Sign… Yeah, maybe I could take a nap while we wait…
Blood…
The smell has always messed with my senses. And the fact that it's in my home… where my children and husband are meant to be for the day…
I stand outside of my house. The door was open, it looked as if someone had broken the door handle from the outside. Well, thats definitely no good. I think it would be best if I conceal my Nen.
Sigh…
I walk up to the house sensing no one's aura inside as I take off my outdoor shoes, switching them for my house slippers. I looked around the first floor seeing that the place hadn’t been ransacked but there were definitely some things missing or out of place as if someone were snooping around…
I follow the scent of blood up the stairs and past my and my husband's room, the my children's room, to the end of the hall to the office’s slightly opened door. Well… I guess this is where all the blood is coming from. I wonder who’s it is.
I go to push open the door until I feel a piercing pain coming from behind.
“F- Fuck!” I yell out in pain as I feel whatever was shoved into me with a sharp twist and I look down to see the end off a blade striking out of my front. I trip over myself as a wave of bloodlust hits me and I fall into the office and into a puddle of blood.
Blood…
I see my children's bodies under my husband's lifeless body…
Ah, so they were home today, they’re dead…
I cough on my own blood as I try to look at who has stabbed me. Their Zestu was absolutely amazing. I didn’t sense even when I was in the house let alone standing outside it.
I look up to see a tall lanky man. He was tan and had long spiky brown hair. He was wearing a plain black turtle neck and jeans. I looked at his face, seeing a manic grin and a sadistic grin on his sharp green eyes.
“Ah, there you are.” The man said as he stepped closer to me, squatting once a foot or two away from me. “My client had said that there was going to be a little lady here that I would need to kill as well. Tell me, are you Seo-Rin?”
I don’t answer. I hate this. I hate that I was caught off guard by this nobody. The puddle of blood I’m lying in is soaking into my hair — god and it is white too. It’ll be a pain to get out —, my clothes, my skin.
“W- who sent you?” I say before coughing on my own blood.
Sigh… I need to stop that damn bleeding before I truly do die.
Still using my Zetu, I use my Ren and funnel it down to my abdomen, using it as a temporary pig so no more of my blood is poring onto the floor. And I just know I’m internally bleeding but there's not a lot I can do about that at the moment.
He sheaths his sword before speaking.
“Ah that, that I can not say sweetheart. I don’t think I can tell ya that.” He said tauntingly as he grinned even wider. “But I will say that he said that I could do whatever I wanted with ya. Just as long as I kill you afterward.” He said, his eyes darkening as he yanked my head up by my hair.
I glare at the man. I knew what he was suggesting and didn’t care to cooperate. I am far too strong for this nonsense. I glance over to the bodies of my husband and children my anger boiling over.
I let the blood pool in my mouth, allowing some of my aura to fuse with it. I just need to get my Nen into him…
“And I think I know just the thing to use yo– Ahg!” He started but was caught off guard when I spit directly into his mouth, causing him to yell in surprise and spit it out immediately.
But… it was too late. I use my Gyo as I watch my aura slide down his esophagus and slowly begin to spread throughout his bloodstream. Now I just need to wait.
“Ah, you bitch!” He snapped, making the fist in my hair tighten and slamming my head against the blood-covered flooring. “You damn whore! And to think I was going to let you go after I had my way with you. But now…” He trailed off, removing his hand from my hair and bringing both of his hands to my left shoulder, and pushing hard.
“Ahhhhhhh!” I scream out in pain as I feel my shoulder being shoved out of place. But it's then that I feel it…
The Nen I had used to plug up the stab wound slowly began to fill back out. My blood that had been on the floor — and the blood of my husband and children — slowly made its way into my body, the blood solidifying to stop internal bleeding and breaking down into skin and muscle tissue as it began to close to the wound.
And of course, the man notices and goes to grab his sword. With one of his hands off my shoulder and the holes in my abdomen healed enough to move, I lift my legs up and kick the are reaching for the sword. He yells out in pain and surprise as he stumbles backward, trying to catch his footing.
“Yeah, I heard about this little trick ya do with your Nen and it won't work on me.” He exclaimed, sword in hand. I stumble to my feet and back up from him, making distance between me and him before speaking again.
“Did you?” I asked calmly, allowing my bloodlust to seep from me and push against his.
I saw his eyes widen slightly as my bloodlust began to fill the room, the air around us thickening. His eyes gleam with an emotion not known by me… fear perhaps?
I feel my bloodlust concert with all of the blood on the floor, said blood slowly beginning to move and form shapes.
“W- what… are you?” He asked, his voice
“Oh but I would have thought you had know…” I say with a question in my voice dipping low as I straighten my stance. I glace down at the three odys on they ground and grimice slightly be looking ack to the man who had brought his sword up and was now in a fighting stance.
Sigh… I need to finish this quickly. A true waste of time this man is…
Not even a moment later the man runs twords me his sword aimed to strike my lower abdomen. Hes fast I’ll give him that, ut not fast enough. The blood on the floor begins to colect and form into a red spike like shield, blocking his sword before it could hit me.
“W- What! I new you could shit with blood but nothing like this!” He said the stutter in his voice giving way to excitement as I saw the steel of his sword seemingly shift darken in color, becoming thicker… stronger. ” But… its nothing special, I defeat you and maybe even have my way with you.”
Have my way with you? What is it with this guy and wanting to fuck me so bad. Oh and… it seems he’s an Enhanser, based on how the steel of his sword got darker and stronger.
He brings his sword up and over aiming for my haed, another spike popping up to block it, only for him to swiftly change direction and aim for my neck. Huh… he really is fast.
…
…
…
Shit.
The tip of his blade slides across my neck.
Blood… spraying from my neck.
Blood… now all over him.
Blood… and his screams of agony as the Nen in my blood form a bunch of tiny blade-like spikes piercing his skin.
Blood… when his now lifeless body fell to the ground.
Blood…
I stubble, sputtering and coughing on my blood as the cut on my neck slowly begins to close a new scar forming. As I stabilize myself I blink a few times, trying to get a grasp on my surroundings. The floor and walls — the whole room really — were covered in blood and it looked absolutely hideous.
I look down at the man and then at my husband and children.
Sigh…
I see my reflection in a mirror across the office and truly take in my appearance.
My clothes were absolutely drenched in blood and there was a huge tear in both the front and the back from being stabbed. My once-white hair now looked like a true mess, blood and now drying blood all over.
…
…
…
Well, what now?
“Huh, I should clean myself up first. All this Blood is giving me a headache.”
Blood…
Yon…
I open my eyes expecting to see red but instead, I see the dull, sad, dark concrete room of the Hunter’s Exam…
Huh. How odd to dream of such a memory.
I yon once again before raising my hands over my head to stretch as I stand from where I had been sitting on the floor.
I glance around the room and noticed that it was a lot more packed the when me and the others got here. Oh, speaking of which where the hell are they?
I weave my way through the crowd seeing a few faces from before my nap. The jester, the pin guy, the red scarf dude, and… oh.
I perk up when I spot Leorio's taller form and a glimpse of a head of blonde hair next to him, Kurapika. I move a little faster as I make my way towards them.
But just as I was about to reach them I heard a loud alarm-like noise coming from the far end of the room and the back wall slowly started to open up revealing a long concrete tunnel. When I looked over and saw a tall-ish lanky man in a dark purple suit and purple hair. I couldn’t see him clearly from here but I could have sworn that he didn’t have a mouth?
“I apologize for the delay, thank you for waiting.” he said his voice giving off an air of professionalism.”The entry period for Hunter applicants is now officially closed, So without further ado… I do believe the Hunter Exam can start.”He finishes, the air in the tunnel immediately shifting.
Ah, finally… I wonder how long I’ve slept?
“One final word of caution… If you happen to be short on ability, luck, or skill please do keep in mind that there is a real chance you could end up seriously injured.” He said an air of caution around him.
Or killed…
“If you are willing to accept said risk then please proceed in following me… but if not, you will be able to exit the same elevator from which you came.” He finished cooly, pointing at the elevator.
…
…
…
“Right then. All 567 applicants will proceed in stage one.” And with that, he turned and began to… walk away. Could you even call that a walk? Eh, whatever. And my, my, 567 people show up for this exam huh? Maybe this could be worth my time.
Sigh… well, I guess there's only one way to find out.
Hay chat, how ya doin'? I tried. Anyway, I wanted to get this out as soon as possible so here ya go. Also, I think I'll try posting twice a month but pls don't hold me on it. Good morning/ Good afternoon/ Good night to you and happy Halloween <3
Chapter 3: Forgive me
Chapter Text
Dear Readers,
Sorry I didn't get to post any last mouth but erm... with medical issues and this whole Thanksgiving thing my mind has been literally everywhere at once. My Thanksgiving was great by the way how about yours?
Anyways, along with all that crap I probably rewrote this most recent chapter (the next chapter) like 4 different times, and I just really wasn't feeling motivated buuuuuuuuuuuut... I started doing it anyway so it doesn't really matter now.
This mouth is also probably going to be a shit mouth due to Christmas and all but I'll definitely try to put out 3 if not 2 chapters out.
Also, before I crawl ack into my little goblin cave I would just like to say that many of the future chapters will be highly influenced by the 1999 version of Hunter X Hunter. So if something doesn't line up with the 2011 one don't freak out or start hating on me.
Love, Paper_hat
*P.S. When the next chapter comes expect some tags to be changed and to be added <33333333*
Chapter 4: Running X Jester X Thoughts
Chapter Text
Running? Yeah no, this shit fucking sucks. Even if it doesn’t affect me too badly.
“Oh my. How rude of me. I neglected to introduce myself. I am Satotz, your Examiner for the first phase of the Exam.”
Huh ok, so he must be a Hunter then.
“It is my responsibility to lead you to the Second Phase of the Hunters Exam.” He finishes cooly, still seemingly ahead of the sea of applicants.
Second Phase? What the hell was the first? Ohhh… unless following him is the first. Yeah, this is a total waste of time. Running is the best they could come up with? Maybe I should just… leave?
Is helping Gon pass worth it — even with his future potential —? Oh, whatever.
“The First Phase is currently underway,” Satotz says, causing even more confusion to fall over the applicants but confirming my original thought.
“This Phase is quite simple. All you have to do is to follow me to the second Phase. So please do try to keep up.” He said before adding “I can’t tell you where or when you will arrive. You only need to follow me.” He finishes, turning away from the applicants as he continues to walk in front of the crowd.
Humm… this Exam thing is weird, So this must be Endurance. All we have to do is follow him. I guess in that case…
I Speed up, passing people as I try to get to the front and find either Gon, Leorio, or Kurapika. And I guess I’ll try to stay clear of the Jester and the Pin Guy.
While looking around I spotted a familiar lankly form up ahead and I made my way twords it, noticing it had to of been Leorieo and he was probably with Gon and Kurapika.
“Keep runnin’ pal, I’ll be right behind ya!” I hear Leorio say before I start to run alongside him, tapping his arm in order to alert them of my presence. He turns his head to look down at me giving me a smile, “Oh! Hay there Kid.” He said, causing Gon and Kurapika to look back at me, both giving me smiles before greeting me.
“Hay Mister Rin!” Gon greeted happily.
“Hello again Rin. Sorry, we left you during your nap.”Kurapika Greeted, slightly calmer.
“Oh yeah, sorry about that. It’s just that more and more people started to show up, we tried to wake you up but you looked so existed and so…” He trailed off, scratching the back of his neck a bead of sweat running down his head as he avoided making eye contact with me.
I smile softly under my scarf as I start running next to him and pat his head before reaching for my cards.
‘It’s okay’
He lets out a sigh of relief before giving me a big smile, his eyes gleaming.
After that, I listened to them talk as I ran in silence next to them zoning out as the pants of the other applicants around us faded into one sound, causing me to unknowingly speed up to my normal running speed. The others stopped talking to look as Rin slowly started to speed up, her movements almost robotic.
…
…
…
I run, my head up, eyes on the ground, breathing in and out through my nose cause if I breathe through my mouth I get tired quicker. That's what my mother used to tell me. I don’t let my shoulder get too stiff.
Fuck this, I’ve always hated running even back then.
Sigh…
I look ahead, watching as the people in front of me run almost in sink, and the pants — and somehow already exhausted breaths — around me. How can these people be tired already? We haven’t been running that long, have we?
At that thought I turned to see if Gon of the others knew how long we had been funing for just to see some guy with a monkey on his shoulder.
…
…
…
Huh!?
I whip my head around — Holding onto my scarf as I do so — not seeing Gon, Kurapika, or Leorio anywhere around me. I am looking forward to just seeing that I was a few people away from the examiner for this First Phase. Danmit, either I spend up without knowing or… yeah that's it. I guess I zoned out again…
Sigh… well I guess I should run along the wall in the meantim–
I tripped over my footing as I sensed a shit ton of strong aura… a few meters back and slowly getting closer.
That aura… ah yes, The Jester.
Just as I come to the revelation of who it is I sense the aura on my left a foot or two away from me. I turned to him running alongside me, matching my pace with a smirk on his as he looked forward.
Hmm… now that I’m looking at him from this close I can get a better read on him. And yeah, I notice a few things…
He couldn’t be that pale. His face was almost white and the same with his hands so maybe — or maybe not — it was makeup. Oh and speaking of makeup, his is done well. The teal teardrop and the hot pink star, along with the mascara he has on. And his nails are long — most likely longer than mine — and look sharp.
“You do know it’s rude to stare, right little boy?” I hear a smooth voice with a somewhat teasing lilt call out to me.
Shit.
I blink up at him to see him still matching my pace but now looking down at me from the corner of his eyes. And glancing around I noticed that we weren’t as far ahead as I had been before. So I began to quin my pase, noticing The Jester following close behind as we passed applicants who looked at me as if I were insane. But why? It's not light we’ve been running that long… right?
And before long I — and The jester — made it to where I could see the man with the long legs and purple hair. Before long The Jester was back at my side and gave me a devilish grin before speaking again.
“Wow, and now you run from me when I’m trying to talk to you? I guess you’re just as rude as that man from earlier, little boy.”
Ah yeah. I could see how what I did would classified as running away.
I shake my head and reach for my notecards.
‘Sorry’
He gave me a questioning look as he looked down at me holding up the card.
“Are you unable to speak,” He looked up with his hand on his chin as if in thought before speaking again’ “or… do you just not want to?” He finished, looking back down at me.
I paused at this. I thought about it for a moment before nodding and stuck up two fingers, to show that the latter was correct. He hummed at that and looked forward again before speaking.
“Ok then, why is that a little boy is taking the Hunters Exam?”
Little boy?
Kid?
First people think I’m a male — can’t blame them — and now they think I’m a child. I don’t think I’m that short, I mean yes I’m short but not so short one would assume I’m a child. I’m only a little shorter than Kurapika and he looks close to maybe 16 to 17.
Oh… that’s not that old at all, is it?
And now that I think about it Gon is like a head or two shorter than me and he’s like what, 11-12?
Jeez, maybe I do look like a child.
Sigh… I guess it can't be helped.
Oh, what did he ask again?
I look up at him to see that he now has his cards out, the deck flying from hand to hand with so little effort.
‘What was that?’
“Humm?” He hummed, glancing down at my card before repeating his question.
“I asked why a little boy was taking the Hunters Exam.”
Oh, that's what he said. Well in that case…
I shrug my shoulders as I look up at him. I pointed at him, causing him to his eyebrows to rase in question.
“Are you asking why I’m taking the Hunters Exam?”
I nodded, pausing briefly to adjust my scarf again.
And at that, he flicked all of his cards into his left and moved his right to pat me on the head as he let out a small chuckle at either my actions or my question.
“Oh, it's nothing you need to worry about my unripe fruit.” He said, his voice dropping an octave as his eyes gained a kind of sensual glint.
…
…
…
What the hell does that mean?
I felt a silver run down my spine at that, unsure of how to react. I felt my cheeks flush at how he had said it, my long-going steady pace faltering in that moment. D- doesn't he think I’m a child? Maybe it's just me and the way I raised my children but… something about the way he spoke to me — a “child” — was odd. Wait…
How long have I not had my Zetsu activ–
I was ripped out of my internal turmoil by a quite frankly pornographic moan to my left. I slowly look over to see the Jester looking up toward the ceiling, card no longer there as his hands flexed. My eyes widened slightly at the sight, what was there to be moaning about? The people around us gave him disgusted looks and others frightened and flustered blushes. My flushed expression impatiently changed to one of the discussed, I always never knew how to feel about perverts and he seemed like a pervert.
I slowed down slightly allowing him to unknowingly run ahead while was… distracted? I allowed a bunch of people to pass me, even seeing the bold guy with the scarf. I waved but it seemed he was chatting up one of the other applicants so he didn’t see me. Oh well. What now?
“Hummm…” I hummed my hand resting where my chin would be over my scarf as I thought on what to do next.
I don’t want to be any closer to Jester — or the Pin Guy for that matter — for the rest of the Exam unless deemed necessary via one of the phases. So I guess I could go with my group.
My group…
When did they become my group? Well, I guess I don’t mind that new revelation.
Sigh… I’m going to assume that they’re farther back.
So with that, I completely turned around, startling and confusing many of the somehow already tired — after no more than probably an hour or two — applicants as I began to run in the opposite direction. As tried to not ump into the many I passed I also was keeping an eye out for either Gon, Kurapika, or Lieorio. Honestly ruing this with either one or all of them would be fine.
“I WILL BECOME A HUNTER!” I hear an oddly familiar voice yell a little ways back.
…
…
…
Holy shit.
I look to my left just in time to see Leorio spirit seemingly full force past me followed shortly by Gon and some white-haired kid holding a skatebaord — with a white shirt, blue undershirt, and shorts — behind him. I saw that Gon had Lieorio’s suitcase caught in his fishing rod, it swayed back and forth as he ran.
Well, I guess I’ll just follow them then. And so I do. I turn back around and run a few people behind the white-haired boy before eventually reaching him.
He looked up at me narrowing his eyes slightly before he spoke.
“What do you want?” He questioned before looking forward again, not bothering to look at me.
Jeez. Rude much?
Just as I was about to use my Ren to asses how well off he was I felt Gon grab my hand as he ran.
“Mister Rin there you are! You were way ahead of us and I couldn’t find you.” Gon said, relief filling his voice.
I nod at that, that just confirms that I did zone out.
“Oh, and this in Killua. I met him a little bit ago and we’re the same age and everything.”
Oh. I looked over at Killua — who had made his way to Gon's right side — and gave him a small wave before reaching for my cards. Who knew it would be so difficult to shuffle through them one-handed? Thankful Gon noticed and let go of my hand with a sheepish smile.
‘Nice to meet you’
“Huh?” Killua raised his eyebrows his eyes no longer narrowed at me but at the card I was holding. And before I could try to explain Gon cut in for me.
“Mister Rin can’t talk. Or I don’t think he can, he talks using his note cards.” Gon said look up at Killua.
My goodness in Gon short. If he and Killua are the same age Gon is either really small or… yeah that's it. Looking at Killua it should be safe to assume that they’re both maybe 11 or 12.
“Oh, well hi Mister Rin,” Killua said calmly yet with an air of nonchalant.
I nod in acknowledgment.
After that, I run alongside the two boys in silence. Acationaly I would glance over at Killua to see him already looking at me with a questioning look before noticing that I caught him and embarrassingly turning away. Curious little thing.
“We have reached the 80kl mark, so I believe now would be a great time to pick up the pace.” I heard from the front of the crowd, causing me to look ahead just to see a huge staircase leading to God knows where. And considering that we’ve been running for a few hours already it's safe to bet people are going to start losing the Examiner here.
“Hey, I've got an idea. Let's race to the finish, and see who's faster.” Killua suggested excitedly, turning his head to look at Gon and then me.
Was he asking me to race too?
“Sure, okay. But the loser or losers has to buy the winner dinner” Gon exclaims with probably the same level of excitement, if not more as he looks between me and Killua.
Ah, okay. I guess that's settled then. I will be racing… and Mother didn’t raise a loser.
Both me and Killua nodded at that, all three of us slowing for just a moment before…
Ready… GO!
Me, Gon, and Killua start to sprint. We ran towards the stairs passing people as we did so. Once we made it to the stairs we all ended up using our smaller stature to weave through the running and out-of-breath applicants. Every now and again a huff of hot breath would hit my neck or ear, causing me to run faster. I really do hate that feeling.
As we get farther up the stairs I notice that there are fewer people up here than towards the start of the stairs.
I manage to keep up with Gon and Killua — or maybe it's the other way around — when I see two female figures up ahead.
Leorio had at some point taken off his shirt and suit top, leaving him in just his pants and his tie hanging loosely around his neck. And Kurapika had taken his tabard off leaving him in his all-white ensemble along with his ginger bag.
As we get closer I can slightly hear remnants of a conversation they must have been having. So he wants to become a doctor huh? Okay… that is also a fair reason to become a hunter.
And soon enough we make it up to them.
“See you at the finish line guys!” Gon said excitedly.
“Catch ya later, old man,” Killua added.
Lieorio? Old? Nah, I’d say he may be somewhere around my age so 23-24?
“Hay, I’m not old! Can’t you tell I’m a teenager like you guys!?” He yelled.
…
…
…
No way.
I stumbled over my footing as I turned to look at him. Teen? No, he has to be joking right?
I didn’t get a chance to ponder on that thought as I noticed Gon and Killua begin to pick up their pace. I wave at Kurapika and Lieorio once before joining the two boys. As we ran I noticed that the only people in front of us were sitting on a step, leaning against the wall and out of breath. Some were even passed out.
Just as two of the applicants gave up, we passed them as I looked up and watched the small figure of the examiner farther up the stairs.
“Gon I gotta tell ya that I’m pretty impressed that you're able to keep up with me,” Killua says, breaking the quiet.
So I did sense something from him. This kid’s aura is strong, maybe even as strong as Gons. Not to mention I haven’t heard his footsteps this entire time, so I’m going to assume that he’s skilled and dangerous. But not more than me.
“Really?” Gon asks with a nervous chuckle.
“Or maybe they're all so slow you just seem fast.” He added.
That could also be true.
“Jeez, I really thought that this Hunter Exam was going to be more of a challenge. This is just boring.” He sighed out in disappointment, his head dropping.
But he seemed to perk up slightly at my nod of agreement, I too thought that because so many people came here it would be hard. Perhaps I’m speaking to soon but so far it’s just been running, and while I don’t like running I do end up forgetting about that later on.
But at his statement, Gon gave him a questioning look, “Huh?”
“Oh well, I don’t actually want to become a Hunter, I just heard from somewhere that it was supposed to be hard. So here I am, though it not as fun as I thought.”
That… that is something my youngest would definitely say. It’s truly a shame he’s dead.
Huh… why am I thinking about that kind of thing again? First Gon and now Killua, how ridiculous. These two are simply better than my children. My oldest couldn’t even grasp the concept of Nen, but I bet these two could get the basics down in under a month cause of how strong their auras are.
It's simple, my children just weren’t good enough… strong enough. If they were, they would have been able to kill that incompetent man.
Mother would be disappointed in me. Just when I’m able to have children they’re defective…
Mother was right. I should have just killed–
I was cut out of my spiraling thoughts by a shout about the exit. And sure enough there it was so I slam my foot down hard on the step in front of me, chanling my Nen into my foot and launching forward with a burst of speed passing both Gon and Killua along with the other applicants. As soon as the Examiner past the thresh hold so did I, followed by the two boys.
“Woah! How did you do that!?” Both Gon and Killua questioned, their eyes wide with awe and confusion.
I simply shrug my shoulders.
“Ah jeez, guess we’ll bye you dinner huh?” Killua muttered to himself.
As the two begin to bicker about which one of them passed first I walk over to the Examiner before taking out my cards and pen.
‘Is this the Second Phase?’
He looked at the card briefly before looking back up at me and shaking his head. “No, I’m afraid not. We have quite a long way to go.” He said his mustache moving as he talked.
Huh, how odd. This man has no visible mouth.
I shrug and walk away. I make it back to the boys just as some of the applicants begin to exit the tunnel.
“So, is this the Second Phase?” Gon asked as he watched the people exiting, most likely looking for Lieorio and Kurapika.
I shake my head no and both boys sigh, Killua sitting down. He was leaning against a tree as he as and I spotted another tree close by and also sat by it. When I sit down I sneezed…
“Bless you Rin” Gon had said glancing over at me for a moment at the back at the exit.
I sneeze again…
“Bless you” This time Killua said it, also glancing over at me.
And then again…
Now both Gon and Killua were looking at me as I held my scarf in place, all my sneezed jostling it and my companion around my neck.
Jeez… It’s now that I get a good look around and notice that we’re in this clearing with some kind of swamp in the near distance. I guess because of the fog that's around us and it being so thick I just didn’t care to look around.
I sneeze again and end up waving my hands in dismissal before either one of them can say anything and take out my card and pen.
‘Wake me later’
At this, they both nod.
“Okay.”
“Sure.”
I get a little more comfortable. Deciding that I would just sleep and wait for the rest of the applicants to come running out.
As I close my eyes I feel like I’m forgetting something but I couldn’t care enough at the moment.
Jeez, I hate running, I’m always so tired afterward…
Yo, whats up!?
Sooo... I've recently gotten hella into the walking dead and kind of started writing something (Draft of the first chapter) out of impulses and now I'm in a predicament where I want to start hyperfixate on something until I get tired of it and completely forget about what I was doing before. So don't fuss if there isn't anything for I bit, I'm just getting back into the grove of things.
Bye-bye, lovebugs! <333
