Chapter 1: Magical Meeting
Chapter Text
Well, I am having the most magical Monday ever. My shipment of rose quartz and tourmaline is delayed by another business day. This is what I get for ordering through Amazon.”
“No offense, but why would you buy crystals from Amazon ?” Dan asks near the cash register. Dan shimmers in and out whenever he pleases.
“You know, for a ghost, you don’t have a lot of boundaries, and for your information, it was the only way I could buy them in bulk; my other seller is out on holiday for a month.”
Dan shrugs his shoulders’ his ghostly form shimmering slightly. “Did you at least get prime delivery?
I roll my eyes. “Yes.”
Dan pushes his brown hair back with his hand and then floats over to the herbs and spices “ What happened over here?”
I blush from embarrassment, fidgeting with my quartz crystal hanging from my neck; I am still getting the hang of my magic; “ I… uh.. had a misunderstanding with the sage!”
“You can say that again!” Dan whistles.
I sigh and look at my hands. “I am still having trouble with fire spells, and when I tried one out, I almost set the bloody store on fire!”
“Don’t worry, love. You will get the hang of it with more practice,” Dan says, trying to put a hand on my shoulder. It goes through since Dan is transparent.
“Thanks, Mate,” I say as I sweep the floor with the broom. Chris, my friend and flatmate, should be here soon; I could really use a cup of coffee. I must run the shop until 5 p.m., and Chris will close. Then I need to grab dinner and head to school for a 7:30 p.m. class.
I look at my watch: it’s 10 am, and it's almost time to open the store. The Crystal Coven is my pride and joy. It is a small wooden shop with stained glass windows. The interior gives cozy, dark academia vibes. The shop has three sections: 1) crystals and minerals, 2) books and tarot cards, and 3) essential oils, herbs, and spices. I also sell many necklaces and bracelets with a diverse range of crystals up to the customer's taste. I will do tarot and spiritual readings if I am up to it.
One of the perks of being a warlock is seeing the supernatural. I can communicate with ghosts, and Dan was relieved when he found out I could see and hear him. One year ago, I was going through my extra stock of Himalayan salt lamps, and when I looked up, I saw this 20-something-year-old who seemed so lost and confused. In my heart, I knew he needed a friend, so I lit a few candles, and we sat down and talked. I told him I was a warlock studying at Uni and owned the Crystal Coven. He told me his name was Dan and that he died from a skateboarding accident. He has yet to figure out his unfinished business, and I told him he could stay in the shop as long as he wanted.
I have grown to love Oxford. My parents had a great time building a life and studying here. Dad studied classics in the art department, while Mum worked in the library archives. Sometimes I would go with them, just to spend hours reading in the library. Bookworm at heart, what can I say? Until one day they were killed by demons when I was twelve. Now, I am 25 and the anniversary of their deaths approaching makes me miss them more.
Shortly after my parents died, I hopped on a 2-hour train ride to Kent to live with my Nan. Once I came of age at thirteen, weird things started happening. I began predicting things before they occurred, and when I would get angry or upset, books flew off the shelf or water would overflow the kitchen sink. Nan told me those were early signs of my powers coming in. One night, over a cup of Earl Grey tea and chocolate biscuits, Nan sat me down and told me I was a warlock; my father and mother were both mages. Through Nan, I learned how to control my powers, and that my strongest elemental magics are air and water.
Now that I live in Oxford, I do not see her often, except during the Christmas holidays. Nan, a very kind and patient woman, always did her best to raise me. I would not be who I am without her, and she was the first person I told of my sexuality. I feel lucky she was so accepting that I did not fancy girls. On my 18th birthday, she gave me a letter from my father, and inside were the keys to his business, the Crystal Coven.
Fast-forward ten years, and I still have difficulty with my magic. My Nan says that when my emotions are not in check, my powers become unstable; that is a light way to put it. I can do the basics: light candles, shut doors, open windows, say simple spells, etc. I still need help with challenging spells like levitation and advanced elemental magic. I have tried to find a teacher to mentor me here in Oxford but have yet to be successful.
Living in a world that is both human and magical can be very dangerous. Humans tend to fear things they cannot understand, but I know not all humans are like that. Chris knows I am a warlock, and he accepts it, so I know there is hope in humanity. Regarding creatures, we do our best to keep to ourselves or find establishments that allow us to hang out and form friendships and alliances.
A bell rings, signaling that someone is entering the shop. I look, and I see it is Chris.
“Hey!” I shout
Chris staggers in, heaving like he's running a marathon: “Hi, I'm sorry I'm late. The class got out twenty minutes ago, and I tried to rush.”
“It’s alright. How was class?” I ask as I finish displaying the new tarot cards.
Chris puts his rumpsack down and sighs heavily. “Boring, and I have loads of homework due on Friday.”
“I am sorry, mate!” Dan says, sitting on the counter.
I shoot Dan a look to say that Chris cannot see you.
“What? I feel bad for him.”
I hope Chris and Dan will meet one day, but I have to be a mediator since Chris is human and cannot see or hear my ghostly friend.
I put my hands in my jeans pockets. “Well, this is perfect timing.”
Chris raises a dark eyebrow. “It is?”
“Yes, I have been dying for a coffee. I need all the caffeine I can get. I have a huge exam tomorrow. Do you want me to pick you up anything?”
“Just a sausage roll; I am famished; I did not have a chance to eat before my international business class.”
Dan pouts, “Sometimes I miss food, like pizza!”
I ignore that comment. “Okay, I will be back in thirty minutes; call if you need anything,”
I put on my navy blue jumper, which is so soft and cozy. Next, I grab my over-the-shoulder bag and head out the door.
I breathe in the cool late-morning air. It is windy as the first day of autumn approaches. Three blocks from the crystal shop is a local cafe called the Lone Wolf. Scott is the owner and a good friend, which is ironic since he is a werewolf.
Bloody hell, this place is busy today. I think silently. The smells of roasted coffee beans, vanilla, and freshly baked bread hit my nostrils. There are wooden tables and chairs, all occupied by humans and creatures alike.
I waited in line and was greeted by Scott. He is a tall man with a dark black beard who looks like he would win a lumberjack competition. He is muscular and shouts at the barista to use light foam on top.
Scott takes a deep breath and smiles at me. “Hey mate, good to see you; we are swamped today. Would you like your usual?”
“Yes, and one sausage roll to go.”
Scott types my order in on the register. “You got it; anything else?”
“Nope, that’s it,” I reply.
“£9 please,” Scott says.
I pull out my wallet and pay with my debit card.
“Alright, you are all set; by the way, is my moonstone necklace ready for pickup?”
“Almost, I am resetting the stone on the gold chain you requested. No silver I promise; It will be ready for pick up no later than tomorrow afternoon.”
“Sounds good I need it; there is a full moon this week.”
“Duelly noted. Have a great day,” I reply and head to the coffee bar.
While waiting, I pulled out my phone and texted Chris that I might be late.
A reply beeps on my phone, “Okay, see you soon, and don’t forget my sausage roll!”
Then, the room's energy shifts when someone enters the cafe. A man of 5’8 "struts into the room, wearing a black trenchcoat and trousers. His combat boots click on the floor as he walks to the register. He is the most beautiful man I have ever seen. He has pale skin, dark brown hair, and—most attractive feature—sparkling blue eyes that fix on me for a second.
I ponder silently. This man is so familiar; where have I seen him before?
A barista with bubblegum pink hair tied up in space buns and wearing black-rimmed glasses shouts, “Order for Dom!”
“Thanks, Amy,” I holler, although I am not sure she heard me over the sound of the espresso machine.
I stuff my phone back in my pocket and reach to grab my hot vanilla latte and a warmed-up sausage roll. I walk towards the door and open it, but it does not budge.
“Bloody Hell,” I whisper under my breath.
A calm voice says, “Here, allow me.”
When I turn around, I see it’s the man with the intense blue eyes. He gives me a sly smile as he easily opens the door, holding his coffee.
“Thanks,” I say.
“Don’t mention it,” He replies as we exit the cafe.
“Hey, do I know you from somewhere?”
The man shrugs. “I don’t think so.”
“Wait, do you own the pub down the street from the Crystal Coven?”
He nods “ Yes, the Shadow’s Bite. “
I smile and say, “I am Dom. I would shake your hand, but my hands are full.”
“I am Matthew Bellamy, but you can call me Matt.”
“It’s nice to meet you.”
“You as well; it's good to be back home; I've been… traveling,” Matt says carefreely.
I glance at my watch “ Shit, I am late; I’m so sorry… I have to go. Hope to see you around, Matt,” I say as I turn around and jog back to the crystal shop.
Matt stares after me for a moment with a look of amusement before walking in the opposite direction. Humans are so weird. He cannot put his finger on it, but their meeting was not coincidental.
As I continue to walk the pavement, feeling the autumn leaves crunch beneath my feet, I cannot help but wonder who Matt is. I know he is not human, and an ancient, cold energy surrounds him. I know that magic brought me to Matt, and our paths will cross again.
Chapter 2: Secrets Revealed
Chapter Text
The rain taps on my study cubby window; I would kill for some sunshine right now. I am so sleepy and currently studying at the library. I took my test for ancient runes and artifacts this afternoon, and I think I passed. Before I head to work, I need to check out a few manuscripts on the alchemists of the 15th century. I only have a few weeks before this paper is due for my Alchemy 101 class. This quarter has been flying by, and finals week will be here before I know it.
When I was 22, I decided to apply for college in Oxford; I thought it would be an excellent way to be close to Mum and Dad. I was accepted into the program the following year and am studying art history with a minor in alchemy. These subjects have always fascinated me, especially alchemy, since it is both science and magic. Professor Smith, my Alchemy 101 teacher, wants me to start thinking about thesis topics; I told him I was interested in the essence of life and how it differs across ancient civilizations. I have to narrow down my research, but I want to start with Nicolas Flamel. Legend says his book on The Essence of Life has gone missing. Academic curiosity will lead me to the book, or at least I hope it will.
I checked my watch, and I only had two more hours of study time left. Before I grab the manuscripts, I stand up and stretch. I reach for the sky with my arms and lean to touch my toes. Once I didn’t feel so stiff, I headed for the library's second floor. My combat boots squeak on the linoleum as I ascend. I locate the Philosophy section, scanning several shelves until I find what I want — Alchemy, Science, or Magic. But then I grunt in frustration. Of course, it is on the top shelf. I am a decent height of 5’8, But I would need a ladder, and there is no librarian around to help unless I want to return to the first floor.
Fine, I guess I am going to have to use magic. I sigh and glance to my left and right to ensure no one is looking. I take a deep breath and center myself as I stretch my hand out and call the book to me. I reach out and nearly trip into the bookshelf as the book comes flying off the shelf and goes over the railing.
SHIT, I silently swear. I nervously anticipate a loud thud on the floor below, but it doesn’t happen.
“What the hell?” I walk over to the railing and look down to see Matt with a smug look on his face. He holds the book like it’s some kind of rugby trophy.
My face burns with anger and frustration. I take the stairs two at a time until I reach him.
“I believe you dropped something.” He says coolly.
I take the old leather-bound book from him. “Thanks, you are not stalking me, are you? First, I found you in the coffee shop, and now here.”
Matt is quiet for a long moment. “No, we just happen to be in the same place simultaneously.”
I roll my shoulders. “Seems like a coincidence; now, if you excuse me, I have more studying to do,” I say as I try to walk past him, but he blocks my path.
His voice is a whisper. “ By the way...If I were you, I would be careful using magic in public.”
My grey eyes widen. “How did you--”
“Lucky guess, and what does a warlock know about Nicholas Flammel’s Essence of Life? ”
I arch my blond eyebrow at him. “ Why is it so important to you? ”
Matt crosses his arms and leans against the railing. “Simple interest ."
“Are you a warlock, too? ” I ask.
“No, but let’s just say I am not exactly human ” Matt replies.
“I need to go,” I say as I walk away.
He grabs my forearm in one quick motion, gently.
Anger flashes behind my eyes as I clench my jaw. “ Let. go. of. me”
Matt whispers in my ear, which sends chills up my spine. “Dom, please be careful; there may be other creatures here; just waiting for someone for you to call up this book.”
I pry his hand free from my arm, and he releases me. “ I can take care of myself; besides who says I can call up this book anyway, I need to return to studying. Good day, Matt,” I say in a hushed whisper.
When I was sure he was gone, I went to the information desk and saw my classmate and good friend Luke.
Luke asks me, “Hey Dom, what can I grab you today?”
“Hi, I need Ashmole 1511 and Jurlius 1 to check out, please.”
“I can let you check out Ashmole, but Jurilus has to stay here, I am afraid; it’s an original copy.”
“Okay, can I do a 24-hour hold on Ashmole!”
“Certainly ID, please.”
I hand him my student ID card.
“Splendid, and your note from Professor Smith went through, allowing you to check out manuscripts for your book reports and future thesis.”
I let out a big sigh of relief. “ Brilliant!” That was stressful; the Board of Arts and Sciences said my request would take weeks to process. I was unsure if I could check out restricted resources until after finals.
Luke sends my request down a tube to grab it from the archives.
“Would you like to check out anything else?” Luke asks nicely
“Can you please check if The Essence of Life by Nicolas Flemmel is available?”
“Really? I thought that book was supposed to be missing?”
I want to test Matt’s ridiculous theory. “Please, it could be important to my research.”
Luke rolls his eyes. “ Oh, alright. Anything for a good mate, let me check the computer system.”
There was a ding as two capsules flew through the library shoot; Luke opened the cage and pulled out the manuscript and The Essence of Life.
“Here you are, Dom. Also, make sure to return The Essence of Life when you are done; it cannot leave the facility.”
I nod. “ Noted, thanks, Luke; I owe you one.”
“Wait!” he calls a little too loudly, and the senior librarian shushes him.
I turn around, clutching the manuscript and book to my chest. “Yes?”
“A bunch of us are going to the pub for happy hour. Would you want to go?” Luke asks nervously
I was taken by surprise. “Oh, Luke, I would love to, but I need to study and restock at the Crystal Coven. Raincheck?” I say
“Sure, no worries. Good luck studying.”
“Thanks, Mate, “ I say as I return to my study cavern. I settle down to work, putting the Ashmole manuscript in my rucksack. I set The Essence of Life down as I read Alchemy Science or Magic. I quickly read through the first chapter, taking handwritten notes. As I tried to concentrate, strange things began to happen. I start to hear voices from the Essence of Life book. I did my best to ignore it until the voices got louder, to the point where I thought the whole library could hear.
I looked in front of me and around, but everyone was so engulfed in studying that no one seemed to notice. This is fucking weird.
I opened the book before me; the pages were initially blank. Glancing at a table across from me, I see Matt again. He is reading a book about small businesses.
What is this guy’s problem? He flashes a stupid grin and waves. I give him a sideways glance and wave back. I focus back on the book and see images of elemental magic (Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire). The book turns several pages by itself. It startles me because It cannot be my magic causing this.
The images of the book about the Philosopher's Stone and Elixir of Life flood me. The whispers turned into screams, and I was starting to freak out. How much power can this book have, anyway? I slammed it shut, and I breathed heavily. I wipe the sweat off my brow and feel like my heart will come out of my chest.
Matt stares at me, electric blue eyes full of concern. He tries to rush to me, but I shake my head and mouth the words I am. fine. I looked at my watch, and it was half past 7. Blimey, I have been studying for three hours. I gather my belongings, return the books to the front desk, and exit the building.

I hear the crunch of autumn leaves as I go to the main campus. Whatever that book is, it cannot be good, and I do not understand why everyone wants it desperately. Maybe I will never know. Now I am seriously considering changing my thesis topic, but nope I have already submitted my topic, and it will be a pain in the ass to change it now.
I decide to walk towards the courtyard to clear my head. The trees are beautiful in red, orange, and yellow hues this time of year. The autumn air is cool as it stings my cheeks. I am lost in thought and not paying attention to what is in front of me. I bump into someone, a man in his early 50s.
“Hey! Watch yourself, Lad!: He shouts at me.
“I’m sorry!” I say to him and then continue walking.
“Hey! Wait a minute!” He says.
I turn around but say nothing.
“You look so familiar; you have your father’s features, Will Howard?”
I stand my ground. Who does this man think he is, and how does he know my father's name?”
“Yes, I am Dominic Howard, and Will is my father. Did you know him?”
The Man nods, “ Yes, a long time ago. I am sorry to hear he passed away, along with your mum. It is tragic. Will and I were really good friends in college. I am a warlock like you, sitting on the Covenant representing all Warlocks and Witches.
I reach out my hand to shake his hand. “ It is nice to meet you.”
He shakes it too long and hard as he studies me: “ I am Anthony Creed. Your magic is strong. I can feel it pulsing through, and now that I have caught you, Professor Smith, said a student is currently researching the essence of life.
"Yes that is correct "
His dark brown eyes narrow on me " The scholar in me wonders, what do you know about it? My magic picked up a ancient presence in the library, the book had been found after a thousand years, were you able to find it?
I was about to respond when I saw Chris jogging over to me. “There you are, mate! I have been looking all over for you. “
“I really must be going; it was nice to meet you,” I say as I join Chris.
“You too Dominic, and if you find the book, let me know. My office is on the second floor of the art building, room 2B.”
“Will do. Thank you”
I join Chris, standing with his hands in his black hoodie. He is wearing blue jeans and his favorite footwear, classic black Converse.
Chris stares at me with concern. “Everything okay?”
I shake my head no .
“Love what’s going on. You know you can tell me anything, right? ”
I sigh. “ I know, it’s just complicated.”
Chris walks on my right side. Since he is so tall, I had to take two strides for one of his steps. “Who was the guy, anyway? ”
“Anthony Creed, he knew my father, and I have no idea what everyone’s issue is; why is everyone so invested in the Book of Life and my thesis project? ”
“I am not sure, love, But if you need help reviewing notes or reading books, I will help you.”
I give Chris a soft smile. “ Thanks, Mate, that's kind of you.”
“What are best friends for? Would you like to grab dinner to go?” Chris says as we walk past a small cafe.
My stomach growls in protest; I cannot remember the last time I ate something. “ Sure sounds great.”
We enter the small cafe and head to the to-go section. I pick a buffalo chicken wrap and some salt and vinegar crisps, while Chris selects a Southwest Chipotle chicken bowl. We both grab cans of Diet Coke and pay for them at the register.
As we exit, Chris gets a group chat text: “ Sorry, Dom. I need to go. I have to head to a classmate's flat to work on a group project. But I will see you at home.”
“Okay, I promise not to stay out too late. Bye, Chris!” I say as we head in opposite directions.
I look at the sky and see dark clouds forming. My magic confirms that a storm is coming and that I should head to the shop as soon as possible.
888
The storm gets more assertive at the Crystal Coven as thunder booms ahead and lightning crashes against the sky. Dan shimmered out about an hour ago; who knows what ghosts get up to? I cleanse a set of Tiger’s eye crystals with a sound bath bowl. I try to clench crystals once every two weeks since people's energies can get stuck on them, and I do not need any negative and evil energy in my shop.
I hold out my hand, and a small amount of sage floats to me as I grasp it. I wave my hand over the sage, creating a tiny spark; as I finish my cleansing ritual, the lights flicker, and meditation bowls hum deeply.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see movement by the window. It could be a trick of the light, or I am starting to see things due to exhaustion.
“Huh?” I say out loud; I quickly extinguish the sage in a glass of water, until there is a light hiss sound.
I put the tiger’s eye back in the display case. I just head back to my desk chair to study more. The howling winds rattle my windows, and I fear the glass will break. I am currently reading the Ashmon 1500 manuscript and taking notes. Luckily, it is protected by a see-through slip.
A ringing bell startles me out of deep thought. I could have sworn that I locked the front door and put out the closed sign, but I may have forgotten due to all the studying.
A man in a dark trench coat, jeans, and combat boots comes trekking in soaking wet.
“I am sorry, sir, we are closed,” I shout.
“I didn’t come into the shop; you are in danger, Howard!”
I put down my books and rub my quartz crystal like a saber tooth for protection. I walk over to the stranger to tell him to go away. I cross my arms and stand my ground. “Oh really? And what danger am I in exactly? I’m perfectly safe.”
The man turns around to reveal it is Matt Bellamy. I swear this guy is popping up everywhere. Can he not give me a moment’s peace?
I stare at him with wide grey eyes. “YOU, What are you doing in my shop?”
“I’m-” Before Matt could answer, a shadowy creature appeared at the door. Snarling noises and thick black smoke began to occupy the shop.
A gasp escapes my lips. “What was that?”
As the smoke fades away, it reveals a scaley black creature over 6 feet tall. It’s muscular and has red, beady eyes that zero in on me. In a slimy and sinister voice, it says, “Dominic Howard, come out and play!”
Matt holds up a hand to stop me from approaching the door. “Find a safe place to hide, Quick!”
He does not have to tell me twice. For a human, he is fearless.
“You have something I want,” the voice sneers.
Matt runs faster than any human I have ever seen. One minute, he is by the front door, and the next, he stands in front of the counter, protecting me.
“Where is the book?”
Matt responds, “ I don’t know what you are talking about?”
“This warlock knows where The Book of Life is, and I intend to take it to my master.”
Matt growls, almost inhuman, his hands clenching into fists. He creates a fist and punches the demon with inhuman strength. The creature collapses into a shelf of tarot cards. When Matt turns around, I sneak a glance at Matt with vampire fangs. Shit Matt is a bloody vampire, no wonder he is so strong and fast.
What am I doing, hiding behind a counter? Don’t be a coward, Dom,” I tell myself silently. This is my store, and I intend to defend it.
“Luneous Solair!” I shout as a bright white light shoots out of my hand; the creature screeches and shies away. Matt pulls his hood up to shield himself.
“Dom, go back behind the counter; I will not ask again!” Matt snarls, his fangs growing longer.
“Get out of my store, demon,” Dom shouts. I will not back down without a fight.
The creature lurches forward faster than I can blink. The demon grabs me by the throat; I gasp for air, and I feel my legs dangle off the ground. I try to pry the creature's hands from my throat, but it is useless. The demon is too strong.
“Dom!!! Get Away From Him!” Matt shouts. A tar-like scent comes off the demon, making his nose scrunch.
I am choking on my spit as I start to lose consciousness. Matt doesn’t have time to think when my life is at stake. The vampire jumps high and lands on the creature's back. Using his vampire strength, he growls and cracks its big neck, and the demon dissolves into ash.
I drop to the ground, gasping for air.
Matt’s hand is cold from his icy skin, but he helps me to my feet. “ Are you alright?”
“I am okay. Thank you for saving my life,” I say in between coughs.
Matt smiles as his fangs disappear. “You're welcome.”
Dom arches one eyebrow. “So you are a vampire, huh?”
Matt's blue eyes focus on Dom. “Yes, I didn’t want you to find out this way.”
“And you live in Oxford?”
“From time to time ”
“I owe you one.”
“Don’t worry about it. Anyways, I should get going,” Matt says as he turns the doorknob.
“WAIT.. Will I see you around?” I ask
Matt smiles faintly. “I won’t go far, and the way I see it, you need protection, but please promise me one thing?”
“Anything.”
“Don’t go into the Oxford Library by yourself.”
I cross my arms. “ Why?”
Matt sighed deeply. “Because since word got out, you can summon a book that has not been seen in over a millennia; more creatures like the one who attacked you tonight will come after you.”
I narrow my grey eyes. “ I can take care of myself; besides, I have a manuscript to return tomorrow before they are past due.”
“Suit yourself, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Matt vanishes out of thin air with a change in the wind and rain sprinkling outside.
I go to pick up the Tarot cards on the floor when I get a premonition; I see myself in the Oxford library and summon a mighty windstorm to keep the evil creatures at bay. When I return to reality, Dan’s ghostly figure comes into view.
I scream and jump out of my skin. “ Dan, you scared me. Must you always sneak up on people?”
“I called your name out three times, mate, and I sensed a disturbance, and I wanted to pop back over to see if you were okay.”
“I am now. Thanks to Matt; he saved me from an Icarnie demon.”
Dan winces “ Fuck, those creatures are nasty, and coffee shop Matt was here. “
“Yeah, he just kind of appeared. Turns out he is not human, he's a vampire.”
“A vampire!?! Oh love, vampires are dangerous and have been in feuds with warlocks and witches for years.”
I snap, “ I know that! But he did save my life, and that has to count for something, right?”
“I guess so; now, should I go fetch the broom?” Dan asks
“No need,” I say, taking a deep breath.
“ Spongeous Vlantius !” I speak as the shop begins to tidy up by itself. Books fly back on the shelves, broken glass reforms into a window, crystals head back into their display cases, etc.
“You should go home and rest,” Dan says, trying to put a ghostly hand on my shoulder.
“Thanks, Mate. Chris is probably worried about me.”
I gather up my books, raincoat, and keys. With a wave, I turn off all the lights and lock the doors. Dan floats through the door and stands on the street next to me.
I walk in silence. Dan bides me goodnight and disappears back to wherever he calls home. I am a warlock, and Matt is a vampire. That can explain why he has been following me around, to keep me safe. But why would a vampire want to save a mage like me? When Matt touched my shoulder, that was my first clue that Matt was not human. He had a coldness, and there was a lack of a heartbeat. As much as I hate to admit it, I need his help to track down this book before it gets into the wrong hands.
Chapter 3: Warlock Winds
Chapter Text
Autumn is my favorite time of year; I know it's so predictable since I’m a warlock. The spooky season somehow makes me more connected to my magic. My favorite holiday, Halloween, is a few days away, and I could not be more excited. I love getting dressed up and eating anything with pumpkin spice. Luke, my friend from the library, texted me yesterday, inviting me to a party this weekend. I told him I would consider it, but a part of me felt bad for not hanging out with him and our friends the other day. I have a feeling he has a crush on me. He’s a good mate, but I do not like him romantically. All I do is work at the Coven or study, and I think a party is just what I need to get out of my introverted shell.
Last night's events play out over and over in my mind. Matt saved me from a demon, and now he believes I am in danger—all because I can summon up The Essence of Life . I did not ask to be “the chosen one” and save all the creatures from extinction. I just want to graduate with my university degree. Is that really too much to ask for?
I bundle up in my forest green trench coat as I walk to school. The air is crisp and cool, and the wind softly blows a few strands of blond hair into my face. It always amazes me how massive Oxford University is. The school has botanical gardens, pubs, and even an observatory. My favorite place is, of course, the Bodleian Library. Dad always said, “Knowledge is power,” so I spend most of my time surrounded by books. I miss Dad terribly, and today will mark ten years since his passing.
Tom’s clocktower strikes at five o’clock; the chimes indicate that I am running late. The library closes in two hours. Matt said I shouldn’t come alone, but I had no choice. Chris is in class, and the shop is closed, desperately needing repairs. I hold the borrowed manuscript close to my chest and enter through the south entrance of the building. Once I am inside I take a deep inhale. Rows of books occupy the shelves on both floors; it has a cozy and dark academia feel to it. I love the smell of parchment and vanilla. Old books have an old charm, full of ancient wisdom and beauty that the nearest Waterstone doesn’t have. I reach the reservation desk and see Luke; he smiles at me and is wearing his glasses, a blue cashmere sweater, and tan trousers.
“Hey, Dom,” Luke greets, putting down his textbook.
“Hi, Luke,” I reply.
“What can I do for you?”
“I am here to return my manuscript.”
Luke nods. “Sure, I just need your student ID, please.”
“Certainly,” I say, pulling out my card from my jeans pocket and handing it to him. Our hands touch for a moment, and I could have sworn I saw Luke blush.
“Thanks; by the way, have you thought about the party?” Luke asks.
“Yes, I would love to go. Would it be okay if I invited a couple of friends?”
“Sure, the more, the merrier. It is going to be brilliant. There will be drinks, dancing, and a costume contest. It's at 6 pm at Wenbly Mansion.”
“I will be there. Thanks for the invite,” I say, giving him the manuscript to check in.
Luke puts it on the go-back cart. “Anytime, how is your research going?”
I sigh. “ Sadly, another dead end that’s meant to be expected; Alchemy is not an easy subject to study.”
“I am sure you will find what you are looking for; you are smart. Is there anything else I can grab you today?” Luke kindly asks .
“Oh umm…”
“He will take Nicolas Flamel's Essence of Life,” a stern voice said as boots scraped the hardwood floor.
Luke narrows his brown eyes. “Sir, that book has been recorded missing,”
“Why don’t you check again?” The voice says in a rude tone.
Luke looks at Dom with concern. “Friend of yours?”
“Certainly not!” I protest.
“Hello, Dom!” the figure said, standing beside me.
“Anthony Creed, what do I owe the pleasure ?” I say through clenched teeth.
“To test a theory, to see if you can call up the book again, several of my associates know you can; let’s find out together, shall we.”
“Like I said, it’s missing, and if you keep harassing students, I’m going to have to ask you to leave,” Luke says sternly.
Anthony Creed sneers and points the finger at Luke. “Watch your tone boy! I’m a big contributor to this university.”
There was a series of shhhs as students and faculty returned to studying.
“Dominic, call up the book, and I won’t harm your human friend. ” Anthony whispers in my ear, and he has a knife at my back.
I gasp from the pain of the knife digging into my skin. “ Luke, would you mind checking again, please!”
Luke nods as he returns to his records and the shoot: “No, Dom. I’m sorry it’s still missing.”
“There you have it, Creed; now let me go!” I whisper angrily.
Creed puts up a shielding spell around us; Luke, being human, doesn’t notice, but I do. With my magical abilities, I can see the iridescent shield. To anyone on the outside, it looks like they are murmuring at the help desk. Creed releases me and puts the knife back in his pocket.
“Now we can talk this through like civilized gentlemen?”
“Leave him out of it; Luke knows nothing !” I protest.
“But he is someone close to you, and since you refuse to cooperate, I have no choice!” Creed sneers as he makes a sharp noise that only humans can hear. Luke falls to the ground, screaming and covering his ears.
“Stop it. You are hurting him; your fight is with me. Now let him go!” I try to shove Creed out of the way, but he does not budge.
Smoke begins to form, and there is a crackling sound that a spell is being cast. Creed levitates Luke off the ground and throws him into a nearby bookcase. His head makes an impact on the shelf, and there is a nasty red welt on his forehead. Luke slumps down to the floor, groaning in pain. Horrified, I ran over to check on him, shaking his shoulder lightly. “ Luke, LUKE!”
“Humans are so weak!” Creed snickers.
That statement stops me in my tracks. My hands begin to get a goldish glow as I lean down to heal Luke. Once his breathing is stable, I stand up to face Creed.
I am so angry, and my body buzzes with new magic. A mighty wind blows around me, and papers and books fly everywhere. The overhead lights flicker on and off with a loud buzz . When Creed tries to take a step towards me, I fight back. I summon a strong gust of wind, and Creed falls to the ground. Students and facilities, both humans and creatures alike, exit the library.
“All I want is the book, Dominic! You are the only one who can save our kind; witches and warlocks need this book, and we don’t want it to fall into vampire or werewolf hands. “
My air magic becomes stronger as I face down Anthony Creed. The villain tries to stand, but I push him back down. I could feel his magic fighting against mine, but I succeeded. He has a look of shock on his face, causing him to fall backward and land on a table across the room. Creed is knocked unconscious. Individuals who could not escape the library scream and grab onto the nearest shelf before they slide down the hallways.
My anger releases, and fear builds up in my throat. My heart is racing in sheer panic, with no way to turn off the winds. I feel a panic attack coming on as I start taking in shaky, uneven breaths. I collapse on the hardwood floor and reach for a table lag to latch onto.
Matt runs inside after his vampire hearing picks up a series of screams inside the library. He sees me facing down Anthony Creed with warlock winds; he has not seen anyone perform that spell in centuries. He is glad to see that I am alive. With his vampire speed, he runs to me in the blink of an eye.
“Dom!!” Matt shouts.
I gasp, my bond hair whipping back and forth; breathing is getting harder. I managed to form a sentence.” Matt, I’m scared; I don’t know how to turn it off!”
“It’s okay, Dom. I’m here !” Matt soothes. He lies on the hardwood floor across from me, grabbing onto a nearby desk. He slowly reaches out to me. I take Matt’s cold and firm hand as he pulls me towards him. He shields me from the wind storm. I grab onto Matt’s forearm for extra support, feeling the soft black coat between my fingers, and squint my eyes shut.
“Breathe, Dom; I’ve got you,” Matt says softly as he pulls me into a hug. I nod as I focus on Matt’s voice, taking slow, deep breaths.
Ten minutes later, the winds die down, and Creed is nowhere in sight. My eyes are watery as my panic attack finally ends.
“Are you alright? My hearing picked up a disturbance in the library.” Matt asks helping me off the floor.
“Anthony Creed was forcing me to summon the book, and it kept coming up as missing,” I explain, trying to catch his breath.
“That warlock is evil and very dangerous; you must be more careful,” Matt advises.
“I understand; oh no, Luke!” I say, running over to where my friend lies on the floor.
” He’s okay, he’s breathing,” Matt reassures me, picking up a slow and steady heartbeat.
“Luke, can you hear me?” I ask.
Luke’s brown eyes fly open. “Dom, what happened? Are you okay?”
“I’m fine; I’m more worried about you.”
“I’ll be okay, but I think I’m going to go home and rest; thanks for your help,” Luke said, gathering his belongings and heading out.
Matt didn’t leave my side in case more creatures were lurking about.
The vampire tips his head to the side. “Come on, I’ll walk you home.”
I look up at Matt. “You don’t mind?”
“Fate brought us together, Dom; Creed is dangerous; I’m not letting you out of my sight.”
“Okay, Thanks, Matt; you are a good friend.”
Matt smiles, “I try to be.”

Matt holds the door open for me as we visit The Lone Wolf. For a Thursday afternoon, it was quiet in here. He suggested that we grab a cup of coffee, and I said, "Sure, what harm is there in grabbing a cup of coffee?"
“Hey Dom, Matt, what can I get for you ?” Scott says with a toothy grin.
Matt leans on the counter. “Hey mate, can I have my usual, please?”
“Dark chocolate mocha, no whip. You got it, and your usual Dom?”
“Yeah, sounds great,” I say.
“ Alright, and one Vanilla Creme Cold Brew, that will be 7 euros, please, cash or card? Scott explains.
“Card, and this one is on me, Howard,” Matt says.
“Are you sure?” I respond.
“I’m positive.”
“Alright, you're all set. I'll let you know when it’s ready,” Scott says.
Matt and I grab a tall standing table while waiting for our coffees.
“This place is usually packed at this time,” Matt says, looking around to see only a few customers.
“I know, and today is open mic day.”
“Canceled due to full moon!” Scott shouts over the coffee grinder noise.
“Understandable. Also, Scott, I have your medallion. It's been polished, and the moonstone is reset.”
“Sounds good; I will swing by before sunset.”
“Come by the flat, My shop is a mess and under refurbishments,” I say choosing my words carefully.
“You got it, mate, “ Scott says, turning around to finish our order.
I turn to face Matt. He is staring out at the window, lost in thought. He has sparkling blue eyes, and his dark hair is combed messily.
Then he looks back at me. “ What?” He says.
“Nothing,” I say abruptly.
He leans down to face me. “ You were staring.”
“Was not?!” I protest.
“Please, I have superhuman senses, and your heart is racing; I make you nervous, don’t I?” Matt says with a smug smile.
“What. Nervous. Me. No way,” I say as I try to hide my face since I can feel it go red.
“It’s cute,” Matt winks.
“Order up for Bellamy!” Scott says as Matt walks over to grab our coffees, and we exit the coffee shop
I stand up. “Finally, would you like to stroll through the park?”
“Don’t you have more studying to do?” Matt says, taking a sip of his mocha.
“Not until later. I do not spend every waking moment studying, you know,” I say, nudging his elbow.
He chuckles. “Very well, let’s use this time to get to know each other.”
“Okay, first question, how can you drink coffee? I thought vampires can only drink blood.”
“Total myth: I can eat and drink as humans do, as long as I have a supply of blood in my system. I usually “feed” from the blood bag. My flat mate Tom is a vampire and an RN at the local hospital, so he always has a supply for us.”
“Impressive,” I say, drinking my latte.
“Plus, not only does it help us blend in with the humans, but coffee helps my skin not be so cold to touch, and it really helps me curve..cravings.”
“I see; I would have never guessed.”
“Alright, your turn. Do you fly around on a broomstick and wear pointed hats?”
I arch an eyebrow. “ Seriously, that is your first question?”
Matt shrugs. “ It’s the first one that came to mind.”
I gasp in astonishment. “ What do I look like, Harry Potter? No, I do not fly around on a broomstick or wear pointed hats, but I have not tried flying; I am sure there is a spell for it somewhere.”
“I guess the same can be said for vampires; we do not turn into bats, but we can learn to fly.”
“I believe it is my turn to ask, Do you sleep in a coffin?”
“No, I find them terribly uncomfortable. I sleep in a bed like anyone else.”
“And what about the daylight? How is it that you are walking around in the sun? Shouldn't you be bursting into flames? “ I say, laughing.
“Now, who is being dramatic? I have a daylight ring, given to me by an old friend; as long as I wear it, I can walk outside clear as day; bright light can irritate my skin and eyes sometimes, especially during the summer. Now I believe I get to ask you two questions,” Matt says
“Ask away, Bellamy,” I said, sipping my coffee.
“Where did you learn magic?” He asks.
“My powers did not come in until I was thirteen. My parents were going to train me, but they died from a demon attack.”
Matt stops walking abruptly. “Dom, I am so sorry.”
“It’s okay. I learned magic from my Nan. She taught me everything and said that we can from a sacred line of witches/ warlocks.”
“Do you know which line? And no, that is not my second question!” Matt responds.
“I am unsure, but air and water magic are my strongest elements. I am learning fire and earth, but it’s hard, and I have been unable to find a teacher. Honestly, I know we just met, but it’s really nice to talk to someone about all of this; Chris doesn’t understand everything since he’s human, and Dan, my ghost friend who regularly visits the shop, doesn’t understand either.”
“We were brought into each other’s lives for a reason, Dom, and I am glad I asked you out for coffee and you said yes.”
“Two mates hanging out, a warlock and vampire becoming besties, who would have thought?” I said.
“To new friendships and new beginnings!” Matt declares, pointing his coffee cup toward me
“Cheers!: I said. As we did, I felt a powerful spark of magic. There was a golden spark, and it faded instantly.
“Did you feel that?” Matt asks.
“Yes,” I said in shock.
“What was that?”
“I don’t know, but it’s like my magic, connected to you, but it the best way possible.”
Matt shakes his head. “I am not following.”
“Don’t you see? You said so yourself. You and I are intertwined; maybe together, we can stop Creed from finding that book and restore order to the world of creatures.”
“It’s possible. I haven’t become friends with a warlock in over 100 years, but I think this is the start of something special,” Matt says, grinning, his blue eyes sparkling.
We continue to walk through the park as autumn leaves continue to fall. My heart beats faster. I have a question that I want to ask Matt, but I am afraid he will say no.
Matt looks at me with concern. “ Dom, are you alright? Your heart is beating really fast.”
Right, of course, he can hear my heartbeat. I take a deep breath and go for it. “Yeah, can I ask you something?”
“Okay”
“You know my friend Luke.”
“From the Library?”
“Yes, he invited me to his Halloween party on Saturday.”
“Oh?”
“The thing is, I don’t want to go with him; I'd rather go with … you.”
Matt takes his last sip of coffee and throws the cup in the nearest bin. “ Dominic Howard, are you asking me out on a date?”
I blush. “ Yes. Nooo... Ugh, I thought we could go together as friends.”
Matt touches his chin and thinks momentarily, “ I will have to rearrange my schedule at the pub, but okay.”
“Really?”
“Really”
We spent the last hour of daylight chatting, laughing, and strolling through the park until we reached my flat. There is a light on upstairs, indicating that Chris is at home.
“Thanks for walking me home and for the coffee.”
“My pleasure,” Matt says, standing in his coat pocket.
I glance at the lamp posts turning on, reflecting an orangish glow. “It’s getting late; I should head inside.”
“Would you like me to walk you upstairs?” Matt asks.
“I think I can manage three flights of stairs, but thanks for the offer,” I say, winking at him.
“Right, well, goodnight,” Matt says as he runs off.
“Wait!” I shout.
Matt zooms back and is a few inches from my face. He is a head taller than me. “Yes?”
I felt the breath get caught in my throat. I saw his piercing blue eyes staring at me curiously. “Thank you for saving my life; that’s twice now,” I whispered, holding my hand for him to shake. He took my hand gently, taking in my scent and magic.
He pulls away. “Right. I hope you sleep well, and I will see you on Saturday; if you need me, do not hesitate to call or text me.”
I nod, “ Thanks, goodnight!” I say as I hear a woosh sound. When I turn back towards the street, Matt is gone. I head towards my flat, taking my keys and unlocking the door. Shutting it softly behind me, I lean against it.
I smile, and maybe I misread signals, but I feel Matt likes me, which is ridiculous since we met only days ago. But faith and destiny work in interesting ways, and I cannot help but be drawn to him. He let me into his personal life, and he came into mine. There is nowhere written that different species cannot interact romantically. My magic seems to sing when Matt is nearby that I will always be safe with him, and that has to count for something, right?
Chapter 4: Trick or Treat
Chapter Text
BEEP BEEP. I groan as I roll over to reach for the button to turn off the alarm. I was about to hit snooze and set my phone back on the nightstand when I saw a text from Matt.
Top of the morning to you,☺️ Matt texts.
I yawn and text back Good morning and Happy Halloween! 🙂🎃🧛.
Text bubbles pop up. “Happy Halloween! How did you sleep? You didn’t stay up all night studying, did you? 😏”
No, I went to bed at a decent time, I responded .
I am glad to hear it; anyway, I need to head into work, covering the lunch shift, but I will see you tonight.😃 Matt replied, and then my phone was quiet again.
Now is a good time to get out of bed. I get dressed in dark jeans, black combat boots, and an olive green jumper. I comb through my hair and head into the living room; I grab my keys, phone, and wallet. I lock the door and then jog down three flights of stairs until I reach the street. I put my hands in my jeans' pockets and walk down a few blocks until I get to the city center and head to the Lone Wolf.
My mind feels like it is going a hundred miles an hour. All my thoughts keep going to Matt, wondering if there might be something more between us than just a friendship. I head inside the coffee shop and I see a few friends.
“Morning, Dom!” Scott says, as I reach the counter.
“Good Morning, Scott, the usual, please!” I reply.
“Okay, just the drink, would you like a pastry today?”
“Sure, I will take one almond croissant.”
Scott smiles as he writes my name on my coffee cup, “You got it. So, do you have any Halloween plans?”
“Yeah, I am heading to the mansion tonight for a Halloween party.”
“Sounds like it will be a blast, your order will be up soon.”
I grab a two-seater table and go towards the back of the shop. Customers are free to use a small section of books and magazines. A small stage with a mic and guitar stand was in the corner when the coffee shop does open mic nights on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month.
“Order for Dom!”
I grab my coffee and almond croissant and sit back down. I take a bite of my pastry; it is buttery and flaky. For a small town coffee shop, they know how to make good coffee and baked goods.
Man, I wish I had paper and a pen to brainstorm music lyrics.
Like magic, I summoned paper napkins and a pen onto the table.
My eyes widen in surprise as I take the pen and begin writing. Sometimes, songwriting comes to me in the moment. Chris sings and plays guitar while I help write song lyrics and play the drums.
“Far away, this ship is taking me far away,” I whisper. I am midway through the chorus when the energy of the coffee shop changes from happy and cozy to dark and sinister. I felt all the hairs on my arms stand up.
People were leaving their seats as I looked to see who had entered the shop. I saw my ex-boyfriend, tall, dark-haired, athletically toned, with huge biceps and tattoos.
“Dario Lance,” Scott growls
“Hey Scotty, it’s been a long time.”
“What do you want?” Niki, the girl with the space buns, shouts
“Niki, come now, is that any way to treat the alpha of the Lanchester pack?”
Her eyes narrowed as she gritted her teeth. “ You are not my alpha. Why the hell would I listen to you?”
I could feel them trying to keep their anger under control and not turn into wolves in front of customers. There may be mortals here.
Lance’s cronies circled in, but I stepped in and use my magic to create an invisible barrier between the bad wolves and my friends.
Dario crinkles his nose and smells the air; he must have caught my scent, Fuck this isnt good.
“Well, well, Boys, what do we have here? My pathetic ex-boyfriend Dominic Howard”
“You are not welcome here, Dario,” I say sternly.
“ Now, now, I am just passing through.”
I let down the shield and did not take my eyes off Dario.
“We will ask again, what do you want?” Scott said, crossing his arms.
“You found something in the Oxford library, and Crane wants it.”
Now I am pissed “ You are working for Crane? “
“Not for, with . He grows impatient with you, Dominic; bring him the book, and we will walk away if you don’t. Who is to say we won't go after your friends? We can start with your human friend Chris.” Dario sneers
“Leave him out of this!” I shout.
“No need to get angry, Dom; don’t think I don’t know about your little witch wind magic.”
It took me every ounce to breathe and control my magic.
“Alright, that’s enough. You delivered your message; now get out!” Scott shouted and pointed to the door.
The customers started moving in. A blonde female hissed and showed her fangs. Scott and Niki’s eyes turned yellow, and they grew wolf claws. Another tall and muscular werewolf I did not know the name of stood in front of Scott, the alpha.
“You are not welcome here; as you can see, you are outnumbered, Lance. I suggest that you leave.”
“Allow me to show you the way out!” I say firmly as I hold my hand out before me, opening the door with my magic, and summon a small burst of wind. They scream as I push them out onto the street, and the door slams in their faces.
“Everyone okay?” Scott asks.
There were murmurs and a shout of yes as everyone returned to their business. I quickly finished my coffee and croissant, sticking my song lyrics in my jeans pocket. Before I headed out, I saw Scott sweeping the floor, and he stops me and whispers “Hey, you be careful walking home, mate; Dario could still be lurking around; if you need me, call me.”
I nod, “Thanks, Scott, I will, and thank you for what you did; you didn’t have to stand up for me.”
“You are a good friend and bad ass warlock; plus Dario is a ruthless alpha and he trains his recruits in wolf form to kill; he’s dangerous”
I nod. “I know firsthand, believe me; it was a very abusive relationship.”
Scott winks at me, “By the way, speaking of dating, you and Matt make a cute couple.”
I blush. “We are not officially dating, but thanks anyway.”

I heard knocking at my front door as I put on my last costume piece. This latex Spider-Man outfit shows everything well. I put on my red boots and grabbed my mask.
“Just a minute!” I hollered as I checked myself in the mirror before I walked over to the front door and opened it to see Matt.
“Hey Dom, are you.. Whoa!” Matt says as he arches an eyebrow. I could feel him staring at me.
“What?” I shrug.
Matt looks away for a moment.
“Oh my god, is he blushing? Who knew I could make a vampire blush? ”
Matt recollects himself and says, “Nothing. Are you ready to go?”
“Almost feel free to come in, I'll just be a sec.”
Matt nods as he comes inside my flat and looks around. Then he fumbles over his words: “Wow, you look amazing.”
I grin. “Thanks. So you decided to go with Count Dracula? You look fantastic and don’t even need that fake Halloween makeup.”
Matt rolls his eyes. “No, I am pale enough, thank you very much; but I appreciate the sentiment.”
I grab my mask and try it on for size. It seems that the Spider-Man mask got stuck in the folds.
“Here, allow me,” Matt said as he walked over. His hand carefully grabbed my mask and pulled it down.
“Um, thanks,” I said as I could see a little bit in the mask, but it’s mesh inside, so some of my vision is blurred.
“Come on, or we will be late,” Matt says as his hand brushes gently over mine. I take off my mask, and we both exit my flat and head towards the biggest Halloween party Oxford has ever seen.
888
Matt and I walked side by side on the cobblestone walkway towards a massive mansion that looked straight out of Bridgerton. There were spooky cobwebs on the wall, pumpkins of every shape and size with Jack O'Lantern faces, fog machines, and Halloween projectors propelling spooky ghouls and witches flying.
Luke greeted everyone at the front, dressed up as a pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow. When he sees me, he gives me a friendly smile, “Hey, Dom.”
“Hi Luke, thanks for inviting me.”
“Thanks for coming, hey, who is your friend?” Luke asks.
“Hi, I am Matt Bellamy. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you too, mate. Please come in.”
Matt shows a sign of relief as he can cross the establishment's threshold. Vampires must be invited inside before entering a human’s home. Matt explained that this rule does not apply in public spaces like coffee shops and cinemas. It’s still so real that I have a vampire friend, and they exist.
Matt whispers, "How did Luke afford to rent this place out?”
“I think his family helped chip in; they are pretty wealthy.”
I scan the crowd but do not see Chris anywhere. Several people were dancing to hit songs like "Thriller" and "Ghostbusters."
“Can I get you something to drink?” Matt asks
I almost didn’t hear him due to the blaring music and the neon lights that were blinding my eyes. “Yeah, that sounds great.”
Matt senses something is wrong. “Everything alright, love, you seem stressed?”
I felt my heart race faster. Wow, there are so many people here. “Yeah, I am okay, I am glad you came tonight, I can’t seem to find Chris anywhere in this crowd of people,” I say
“Anything in particular you would like to drink?
“Cider, beer, I am not picky,” I respond.
“Okay, I'll be back soon,” Matt replies, and he is gone in the blink of an eye. I am standing near the dance floor.
I am about to find a place to sit across the room when I spot someone—or rather, he spots me. His green eyes widen in surprise, and he approaches me.
No, no, no, this is not happening. How is my ex-boyfriend here? How is it that I'm meeting him twice in one day? This is my worst nightmare.” I can feel my heart beating faster, like a panic attack is coming on. I am doing my best to ground myself and learn how to breathe again.
“Well, well, Dom, we meet again,” Dario expresses in a firm tone.
My eyes narrow. “Dario, I thought you were heading back to Wales.”
“I was, but a few friends told me about this party and I couldn’t miss it.”
“What are you doing here?” I said, balling my fists, trying to keep my magic under control.
“Like I said, I am passing through. I am still having trouble with your magic, I see. I can smell the fear on you. It's pathetic.”
I cross my arms. “I think I am getting the hang of it. If you excuse me, I said I was trying to leave, but he keeps blocking my path. He is so tall and freakishly strong.
Dario’s eyes began to change to yellow, as fangs grew, he looked like he would turn into a full werewolf any moment. “I am not finished with you yet, warlock.”
“There you are, Love. I was looking for you,” Matt says sternly as he puts his arm around me. I welcome his presence. He must have sensed I needed him.
“Hey, love, thank you for grabbing us drinks,” I said, grabbing my cup of cider from him as I took a sip.
“No problem … Sorry, where are my manners? I am Matt Bellamy, Dom’s boyfriend.” Matt went to shake Dario’s hand, and it was a firm handshake, and I could see Dario was in pain.
“Pleasure,” Dario gasps
Matt scrunches his eyebrows and looks between Dario and me. “I hope there were no problems.”
“No problems, in fact Dario was just leaving,” I said, tucking into Matt’s cape. Matt looks so hot in his vampire costume.
“This isn’t over, Howard.” Dario sticks a finger at me in a threatening way.
“Your empty threats don’t mean anything anymore. I am not the same naive man I once was,” I said, narrowing my grey eyes. As static energy formed around my hands, Matt’s cold hand landed in mine, and his cold fingers glided over my hand to keep me grounded.
Dario scoffs and gives us a vulgar gesture before storming off. Matt uses his heightened senses to make sure Dario is out of range before whispering to me.
“Are you alright?”
I take a deep breath. “Yes… thanks for coming to the rescue”.
“Of course, that guy is bad news, I can feel it, and I could see he was bothering you, so I wanted to come over and pose as your boyfriend. I hope I didn’t overstep.”
“Matt, you didn’t overstep. Like I said earlier, I am happy you are here,” I said, squeezing Matt’s hand again before letting go. I clicked my glass bottle of cider with his as we both said “Cheers” and took a drink.
The room was getting fuller, and more drunk people were dancing. I feel tense and restless, suddenly I was not having fun anymore.
“Do you want to go somewhere quieter?” Matt asks
I nod. “You read my mind.”
“Do you trust me?” Matt asks with a sly smile, outstretched his hand
“I do,” I said, grasping it as he led me through a crowd of go-go dancers and outside. We sneak out back until we reach the green lawn.
Matt holds his arms out. “May I ?”
I nod.
In the blink of an eye, I am in Matt’s arms. “Hold on tight.”
An excited scream comes out of my throat. Matt chuckles as he uses his vampire reflexes to jump off the ground. A few seconds later, we are on the roof.
Tonight, the sky was stunning. It was clear, and all the stars were out. I wish I were at the observatory, where I could view all the constellations and planets using the university telescope.
“It’s a beautiful night, isn’t it?” Matt sighs. The autumn wind ruffles his black hair. He pulls his vampire cape closer to him to shield himself from the cold.
“This view is incredible,” I gasp.
“It’s a private place away from prying eyes.. So we can talk,” Matt replies
I carefully find a seat on the rooftop edge, and Matt sits beside me.
“Dom, there is something I want to tell you.”
“Okay”
Matt looks out the window. “I.. I haven’t felt this way about anyone in over 100 years.”
I could tell Matt was nervous, so I put my hand on top of his and rubbed my thumb to let him know it’s okay.
“Thank you for coming with me tonight. I wasn’t so nervous at Luke’s party with you here.”
Matt looks at me for a long moment. “Thank you for the invite, and Dom, since we are alone, I wanted to tell you something… Umm.. Fuck why can’t I just say it..I swear I feel like I fumble my words around you.”
I reach for his hand, sending him a nonverbal cue that I am here for him..Matt gives me a half smile and squeezes my hand gently. “I am here for you, and you can tell me anything.”
Being a vampire, Matt takes a deep breath even though he doesn’t need to. “My mind keeps going back to the moment we met up for coffee, and our hands touched, when we felt a spark.”
I nod, “I remember.”
Matt speaks softly, “I don’t know why there is a spark between us, but maybe it has to do with us being mythical creatures, I am a vampire and you are a warlock, or if it’s my true feelings. That I have for you”
It takes a moment for my human brain to catch up. Matt fancies me. He’s right; there is a spark between us. My magic always seems to grow stronger when he is near. Perhaps it is time to tell him how I feel.
I turn towards the vampire, “Matt, I think it’s time I reveal my true feelings for you.”
Matt sighs, “Okay.”
“Ever since the library incident, when I summoned the winds, I have been so scared, and there was only one person I felt who could help me work through it. You see and understand me. I..I fancy you, Matthew Bellamy.”
Matt’s blue eyes widen in surprise. “ You do?”
Our hands are still joined together. I decide to take it a small step further; as I lightly put my other hand on top of his, “I do, we are connected, never would have thought that a vampire and a warlock could be friends, let alone something more.”
Matt scoots closer to me, I could feel his breath as his whispers in my ear, it makes the hairs on my arms and neck stand up. “I am willing to find out, Dominic.”
Dominic. Lord, the way he says my name, with such ease and passion, is unbelievable.
“ Okay, we both like each other now, what?” I say, shrugging my shoulders. I had no idea where to go from here.
Matt leans closer to me, touching his forehead to my mind, pausing for a moment. Our lips hover, anticipating a long-awaited kiss.
I take the plunge and go for it. “May I ?” I ask with a need to take things to the next level
“You may,” Matt responds, giving me permission.
I place a hand on his cheek, which is cold to the touch, since vampires do not have body heat. Matt does not wait a second longer as he kisses me.
When his lips touch mine, a stronger spark of magic forms . There are elements of electricity and intimacy. Matt’s lips are soft, and he gives me space between kisses to breathe. Matt’s eyes flutter shut; he has the most beautiful dark eyelashes. Matt gently puts a hand around my waist, pulling me closer to his strong body. He opens his eyes and showers me with kisses on my forehead, cheeks, and lips.
“I want more,” I gasp as I kiss him back. Then there is a flash of movement streaming across my peripheral vision.
We stop and look up at the night sky. Matt lets out a heartfelt laugh: “Dom, look at the shooting stars!”
The night sky glanced his way, “You don’t think?” I ask
“It’s possible, maybe our connection triggered a deeper and more pure form of magic.”
“Can we do it again?” I expressed happily.
Matt grins as he kisses me again. I keep my magic under control as we control to snog. Matt stops abruptly as he gasps and turns away from me.
I had a look of horror on my face. “I am so sorry, did I do something wrong?”
Matt holds up a finger. “No, you did no such thing, but I think we should stop for now.”
“Matt, you don’t have to be afraid; you won’t scare me,” I soothed as I lightly touched his shoulder to let him know I would not fail him or think he was a bloodthirsty monster.
Matt sighs and turns around to face me. This is him, the real Matthew Bellamy. His blue eyes have a red tint, and I see two vampire fangs.
“You are beautiful,” I whisper.
“This is a side I never want you to see.”
“You don’t have to hide, I want you to be you, and you are a vampire, fangs and all, Matthew,” I said
“Come on, it’s getting late, I will take you home,” Matt said, standing quickly and reaching for my hand. I took it as Matt pulled me up to my feet.
In 30 seconds, I was in his arms again as he jumped off the rooftop and landed gracefully on the lawn. When he set me on my feet, his hand found mine as he walks me home, keeping a lookout for upcoming dangers as a new relationship took flight.
Chapter Text
Blimey, that was a long class, I say silently. I exit my alchemy 101 lecture with my graded paper in hand. I am thankful I got an A, since it was a pain in the ass to write. Do you know how hard it is to find scientific articles from the past twenty years on alchemical properties?” I remember staying up late to finish it before submitting at 11:59 pm.
I take a walk down High Street as the afternoon sun casts a golden glow over the campus. The streets were crowded as students hurried to their next set of classes. Luckily, I was done for the day, since my ancient world history class was canceled. I could head to the library, but what good is it to call up the book again when creatures are watching my every move? Plus, I really need to practice my magic, so when the time comes, I am ready to fight Crane and his allies. Plus, my mind keeps wandering to other things besides alchemy.
It has been two weeks since I first kissed Matt on Halloween night. We have both been really busy, but I could also feel him pulling away. I know I am overthinking, but I can't help feeling like I've done something wrong. I cannot hide how I feel about him. With Matt, my magic feels stronger and in control. For once in my life, I finally feel confident in who I am, and I love being a bisexual warlock. Do I fancy guys more? Sure, but I also still feel romantic connections to women from time to time.
My stomach growls; I didn’t even realize how hungry I was until now. I decide to head to Matt’s pub, The Shadow’s Bite, which is across the street from The Crystal Coven. I open the door, and luckily, it is not too crowded.
A vampire with long jet black hair greets me at the front door, “Hey, Dom, how can I help you?”
“Hey, Gina, is Matt here?” I ask, looking around to see if I could spot him.
Gina shakes her head, “No, I am sorry, He went out.”
“Can you please tell him I am looking for him?” I said.
“Sure, I will tell him you stopped by.”
“Thank you!” I say and then walk to the counter to place an order for a turkey sandwich and a garden salad.
Once my number is called, I grab my food and head to my shop. With a wave of my hand, I unlock the door and shut it behind me.
I look around my shop; it is such a bloody mess after that demon attack a month ago, and then I had to call a plumber since a leak in the ceiling decided to rain on all my tarot cards.
I head to my desk and put my head in my hands; I barely have enough money to pay rent, and with the repairs. Magic will only fix so much of the damage in the shop.
A text beeped on my phone, and I saw it was Matt. Hey Dom, Gina said you stopped by the pub. Is everything okay? 🙂
I type back, No, I am worried about you. Please, Matt, do not shut me out .😞
Matt’s text bubbles pop up, and I anticipate his reply. I am sorry , you are right, I do not mean to shut you out, it’s just things have gotten very complicated, vampires and warlocks should not be together… but I cannot help the way I feel about you☹️👨❤️👨
I respond. I know. It can get complicated and dangerous if we are not careful. Are you free tonight? We can have dinner, maybe watch a movie ☺️. It does not hurt to throw the idea out there; the worst thing Matt can do is say no.
Matt sends a heart emoji. Sure, come by my flat tonight, I promise not to bail on you ♥️
Okay, I will see you at 7 pm. Would you like me to bring anything?🥰
Matt responds, Nope, I am cooking you dinner tonight, so bring your sexy arse over.😏
The rest of the afternoon, I stay really busy, cleaning up the shop, organizing the tarot cards, and cleansing some crystals. I even had a few sales today and conducted one Tarot card reading. Dan did not appear today. I swear, I need more friends who do not shimmer in and out of my shop that I can confide in. I know he would want me to be careful around vampires, but my instincts tell me Matt would never hurt me.
I do a bit of reading for school since I have a big test at the end of the week, then I turn off the lights and close up shop. I check my phone for the address, and it’s only about a 15-minute walk. I didn't realize that Matt lived so close to town. I put in my AirPods and listen to my punk rock playlist. Come as you are by Nirvana plays. I listen carefully, studying the chords and drumbeats. Open mic night is next week, and Chris and I still need to decide on a song to play.
I reach a two-story grey building and push the intercom button, and Matt buzzes to let me in. I walk up the stairs since there is no elevator. Matt’s flat is on the right-hand side, and I knock on the door lightly. A few seconds later, I hear the padding of footsteps. Matt opens the door, wearing a blue apron, jeans, and a white button-up shirt.
Matt grins at me. “Hey, Dom, thanks for coming.”
We share a hug, and I breathe in his cologne, then release him as my nose picks up an aroma of fresh basil and garlic.
“Thanks for inviting me. It smells amazing in here,” I noted
“Dinner should be ready shortly. I am making Napoleon-style pizzas.”
I take a seat in the dining room, where I can watch the chef at work, sautéing fresh spinach and mushrooms in the frying pan.
I shoot Matt a look of amusement. “I thought vampires were not supposed to have garlic.”
Matt rolls his eyes. “Another myth, it's kind of irritating, but that's it.”
“Care to enlighten me on the other myths of vampirism?” I said, giving him a sly smile.
“Humans dreamed up most myths about vampires; we can go out in daylight as long as we have a daylight ring, I can be seen in mirrors, and holy water is just water.”
“That is fascinating,” I said, taking a sip of ice water.
“Hey, love, can you check the recipe to see how long it takes in the oven?” Matt asks
I nod as I open the recipe book lying on the table. “The pizzas need to bake for 45 minutes.”
Matt walks over and bumps into my shoulder, and red wine almost spills on the book. I gasp as my hands glow, and I'm able to swipe the book away.
Matt and I look at each other in shock..
“I had a feeling, but I was not certain until you did that,” Matt stated.
“What are you talking about?” I ask with a hint of annoyance.
Matt sighs, “ Dom, I think your magic is connected to need; it comes out of you based on instinct.”
My eyes widen in surprise, “ Wait! Maybe that's how I was able to call up the book, because I needed it for my research.”
Matt crosses his arms. “I think it is more complicated than that. Maybe there was a spell on it, and you met its conditions.”
“Maybe we can discuss it further after you put the pizzas in the oven.”
Matt kisses my forehead as he dashes back to the kitchen and puts the pizzas in; as we begin to brainstorm what sort of spell was on The Book of Life and how I meet its requirements.
“Matt, that pizza was amazing. You are quite the chef.”
Matt smiles, “Thanks, I have had centuries of practice and I only use the finest ingredients.”
I help him with the dishes without using my powers. I scrub the dishes and I hand them to him to put in the dishwasher. I learned the hard way that magic cannot solve all my problems.
Matt hands me a glass of red wine as we head to the living room and sit on the black leather couch. I feel like my heart is beating faster, and I'm a bundle of nerves.
Matt had an expression on his face that I couldn't read. “Love is everything, alright, your heart is beating fast.”
I shrug, “Yeah, I am okay… I have a lot on my mind.”
Matt sets his wine glass on the clear coffee table. “Tell me what do you taste?” I could feel Matt wanting to change the subject, delaying my upcoming questions.
I smell the red wine, and then swirl it in the glass before I close my eyes and taste it. I picked up hints of berry, vanilla, and a subtle hint of spice. “I taste blackberry, and spices like cinnamon and a hint of vanilla”
Matt takes a sip of wine. “Human senses are definitely watered down; I can taste blackberries picked fresh off the bush, of course, the grapes come from the land of Tuscanny, and there is a hint of vanilla, but also nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice for sweetness; Vampires have superior senses of smell and taste.”
My grey eyes widen. “That is incredible, I cannot believe you got all those flavors in one sip! ”
“I know you want to talk to me about something important. I am listening and will answer any questions you have,” Matt said sincerely.
I take a deep breath. “I fancy you, Matthew , I understand you have secrets and for good reason, but I wish… or at least I hope you know that I would never tell anyone what you are”.
“ Dominic , I will not tell anyone you are a warlock. Your secret is safe with me; There is so much about my life you do not know, but I am willing to take this step, because I care for you deeply.”
“I am listening,” I said as I held out my hand, as light forms around it, and Matt's cold hand touches mine.
“My turning is not a pretty story,” Matt shares sadly, looking out the window, the sky had hues of orange and pink.
“Matt, if it’s too painful, you don’t have to…” I began
Matt cuts me off, “It’s alright, love, you should know. For starters, I was born in the 1500s and did not turn into a vampire until 1534.”
“You are 500 years old !” I exclaimed
Matt chuckles, “I am older than I look.”
“What was it like, living back then?”
“No indoor plumbing or electricity, it was a very dark and dangerous time, and it was at least 100 years before the witch trials began.”
I set my wine glass down and study Matt’s expressions for a long moment.
After a few minutes of silence, Matt says, “Come here.”
He was motioning for me to sit closer to him. We prop our feet up on the sofa, then lie side by side as his strong arms circle around me. My head lay on his chest; it barely lifted like a normal human does when they inhale. Matt’s chin lightly rested on the top of my head. His thumbs rub my arms soothingly, giving me permission to let my guard down and relax.
“ Vampires have slower heartbeats and do not need much oxygen. We also don’t sleep, eat, or drink often,” Matt said softly.
“I am here to listen, share as much as you are comfortable.”
Matt smiles lightly as he kisses the top of my head, his one hand combs through my blond hair.
It was comforting and sweet.
“Your human curiosity is astonishing. Very well, I shall tell you the story.”
South of France 1534
I was 33, living in the south of France, and one night I was walking home from the local pub. I saw a clan of vampires in the street. You can say I was in the wrong place at the wrong time; they caught my scent, and I was frightened as I ran for my life, which did not do me any good. They were stronger and faster than I am. They followed me on the cobblestone streets, my boots clicking as I sprinted, and my humanity showed as I slipped on a wet stone and fell in an alleyway. I felt my heart beating faster as if it was going to come out of my chest. One vampire growls at me, and I see fang teeth. Now living in the 1500s, I thought they were demons, I was so positive that vampires did not exist”.
A tall vampire grabs me by the collar of my shirt.
“Please.. Please don’t kill me! I will give you anything!” I shout as my eyes stung from tears.
“Do not squirm or scream, do what we say, and no harm will come to you.”
Another vampire, blond and pale, came up to the dark-haired vampire.“This human smells different, he is not like the others; humans taste better when they're scared”.
The tall vampire was Roland, a wonderful, cunning, and cruel figure; he pushed the blond vampire off of me.
Roland growls, “He is not for eating, Jameson; he knows the area and will be of great use to us.”
They took me to their hideout, in a castle high up in the hills. I was gagged and blindfolded as I was put in a room with five other humans, all around the same age as me. Roland was creating a vampire army to take over the surrounding villages under his domain.
That same night, my humanity was stripped away. Roland wanted me for himself, and a small part of me was terrified. “Welcome to the army,, He whispered, his sharp canines visible as he curled his lips and bit my neck. The pain was excruciating as he fed off my blood. I could feel my heart beat and organs slowing down, my eyelids got very heavy; before I fell into a deep sleep, he pulled away. He bites his wrist as dark ruby red blood flows from his veins. “Drink or bleed out,” I didn’t have much of a choice; so, on instinct, I drank his blood, and a few seconds later, he snapped my neck as my unconscious body lay on the floor.
I wake up on the cold, damp floor; out of all five humans, only two of us survived the transformation. Vampires during the early days had trouble siring, due to blood lust. Everything was overstimulating; I could hear whispers outside of the cell, I could see in pitch black darkness, and I had the worst toothache as my fangs were itching to come out.
As our cell door opened, Oliver, a new vampire, and I stood side by side.
Roland and Jameson come into the cell with two humans for us. I did not like where this was going.
“It is a shame that more of you did not survive; it is why we always capture more than necessary. This fucking blood lust is making it hard for vampires to sire.”
“You took our humanity away, made us feed on your blood against our will,” Oliver said.
Jameson is quicker and chokes Oliver.
Roland had a sinister look in his eyes. “What I gave you was a gift of eternal life; you should be thanking me.”
Oliver nods as he remains silent.
“Now you must feed on human blood, to complete the transition, and if you don’t, you will die, it's as simple as that, “ Roland said as he bites the 18-year-old human girl. Her parents must be worried about her.
Roland motions for me to come forward. “Drink”
I hesitate, and so does Oliver.
“Drink, I will not ask again,” He snarled.
“I am so sorry!” I said to the human girl as I pulled her towards me and fed off her blood. That was the night I said goodbye to my humanity. I was now a predator, a monster that needed blood to survive. I pulled away as I gasped in pain. My fangs come out involuntarily as I bite the girl again, and this time, Roland joins me and bites the girl's wrist. We bled her dry.
“Well done, Matthew,” Roland said, putting a hand on my shoulder.
6 months into vampirism. I did terrible things that I regret. I helped Roland steal money from the villagers and killed people who stood in our way. I felt that I had to pay my sire back for turning me into a vampire. I used my revenge as leverage against him, but it was short-lived, since others he created, like Oliver, who did not follow orders, were killed. Roland kept me around as his second in command after that, and then one night he let me warm his bed; it was the first time I had sex; it was painful and done without consent.
I always knew I was gay, but I kept it a secret; that was until Mark came along. Mark was a 50-year-old vampire, a distant relative of Roland; he was my first love. He understood how hard the transition was for me; I had a hard time controlling my impulses. One night, he took me up to the rooftop, away from prying eyes and ears.
“How are you feeling, Matthew?”
I could not meet his eyes. “I am scared. What if Roland finds out about us? I don’t want you to get killed because of me, of my selfish mistake.”
Mark held my hand. “ Matthew, I always knew you were special, and my love for you runs deep; I have friends all over the world; run away with me; eternity awaits.”
I held his hand and felt a spark, and I know Mark thought it too.
“We always have a choice; you are a vampire now, Matthew; you can go anywhere, and be anything,” He said
I cry, “ You are right, there is nothing here for me anymore; Roland killed my family, my friends. They are all gone.”
Mark hugs me to him and cups my face. “I am here; breathe.”
I nod. “I choose you.”
Mark smiles as he kisses me deeply on the rooftop, and I kiss back.
“I am by your side, I choose you, Matthew, and no one, not even Roland, can take away the love I have for you,” Mark said
We left a few nights later, after Roland announced that he was going on a hunt with his cavalry. I volunteered to stay behind with Mark to keep watch.
Mark and I quickly pack our belongings. With Roland out hunting, it was our only opportunity to get out. Mark and I couldn’t stay to watch Roland wanting to wipe out entire clans, packs, and covens. Hand in hand, we leave my village behind and never look back. We had to outrun Rolland and his clan before they found out what we were planning. Once we got off French soil, I relaxed.
Mark and I ran away to Scotland, settling in Edinburgh, and that is where we met his best friend, Beth; she was a witch, and it was through her that I acquired my daylight ring. With her help, Mark and I were able to blend in with the humans. Beth was a weaver and very powerful because she could create new spells relying on the four elements (water, fire, earth, and air).
“I will teach you everything and love you forever,” Mark said as his fangs were exposed. He lifts me into his arms as he kisses me deeply. We made love for several hours that night in the spare bedroom. Roland took away my humanity and virtue, but Mark showed me what true love was supposed to be like. He was beautiful and strong. He taught me how to feed properly and to control my impulses. He showed me a life worth living.
Present Day Oxford, England
“I haven’t thought about him in years; if he is alive, I hope he is doing well; that same spark of new, exciting love is what I feel with you, Dominic., What we have is special.”
“Thank you for telling me, I know it was not easy to share,” I said
“You are important to me. I spent hundreds of years keeping secrets. I want to be upfront and honest, or this relationship will never work.”
Curiously, I ask, “So how did you meet Tom?”
“We met at a party about 100 years later; Mark and I eventually separated and I went to see the world; after my travels I went to Graves castle and I ended up drinking too much wine and blood; Tom could smell the blood, and he was not a fan of how careless I was, but when you are in blood lust it’s hard to listen to reason; especially as a young vampire; but Tom helped me control my thirst and helped me blend in better with the humans without exposing our existence”.
“I am glad you had Mark and Tom looking out for you,” I said, leaning into Matt’s touch.
Matt kissed the top of my head. “Being a vampire is great, but it can get very lonely at times; constantly have to move from place to place; and change my name; but I always kept my first name; in this lifetime I am Matthew Bellamy”.
I turn so I am facing him. “May I kiss you?”
Matt nods as I lean up and kiss him, and he kisses me back harder.
I pull away. “ I believe it is my turn to share. What would you like to know about my life?”
“Tell me more about your family?”
“I lived with my parents until the accident of course; Lived in London during my primary school years; I always knew I was different; When I was really angry or scared things would just happen; like I broke a window once; pushed a bully into a brick wall, it was not until I was 12 and a half that my parents sat me down and told me I was a warlock. One summer, we went to Brighton, and there was a demon attack. They successfully defeated them with spells of fire and water. They took me to my Nan’s, who was a gifted witch, and I just remember hugging my parents for the last time as they went on a business trip and never came back.
I got teary-eyed. Matt held me closer to him.“ I loved them so much; they were good people and gifted in magic. When they went missing for 72 hours, we filed a report, two weeks went by, and that's when the policeman came to my gran's house and delivered the news that my parents were murdered, as you know, my gran took over my training.”
“I can feel your magic running through you; you are so strong and powerful, Dom,” Matt said
I smile at him, and this time, he kisses me first as we share a few kisses. ”
“I will always protect you, Dom; your life is in danger because every creature wants the book of life, and maybe the book came to you because you needed it, and you fulfilled its conditions.”
“It’s possible; I came over and we talked, thank you for being honest with me, Matt.”
Matt cups my face; his beautiful blue eyes stare back at me with love and compassion. “You and I are stronger together.”
We snog on the couch. We kissed each other deeply as Matt put me on top of him. He freezes as we hear the door open.
Tom walks in, putting down his rump sack, and is crumpled in blue scrubs. “For fucks sake, you two; I just got off a 12-hour shift, I can smell the sex aroma in the room,” He said
“We did not have sex; we were just kissing,” Matt protested
“I should go, thanks for dinner, Matt,” I said as I pecked on the cheek and then put on my shoes. I say a quick goodbye to Tom as I leave the apartment.
When I head home and unlock the door, I see a manila envelope on the floor.
That’s strange. I pick up the envelope when I touch it, and I get a flashback of my parents being murdered in cold blood. What sick monster sent me these police reports and photographs?
I take a deep breath as I open the envelope, and I can feel Crane’s magical essence on the photos and reports. Inside, there was also a threatening note.
Dom,
“If you want to find out what happened to your parents? I have answers for you.
Bring me the book and come alone. If you do not cooperate, I will have Dario dispatch your friend.
Crane
If something were to happen to Chris, I would never forgive myself. I start to have a panic attack; I feel like my home is no longer safe, and now Chris’s life is in danger, all because of me and the book of life.
I grab my phone and call Matt, “Hey, love, is everything alright?”
“I need your help. I think Crane and Dario have taken Chris.”
Notes:
Hi Everyone,
Thank you for reading my fan fiction about the muse and discovery of witches. I plan to write up to chapter 10 and then take a short break. In the meantime, I will include some bonus content, such as a spooky playlist and fan art.
