Chapter Text
“RUN!!!”
Pomni screeched to her two companions as her feet began to carry her down the long corridor as fast as she could muster.
Behind them a caterwauling of distorted screeches and grunts followed, paired with the thundering of multiple, insect-like, legs pursuing them at a close distance. Pomni didn’t dare look back, terrified of seeing those dozens of beady, glowing, orange eyes and dripping mandibles all keen on the three cartoon characters fleeing from it.
Why the hell did Caine even think an adventure where they had to face giant bugs inside an ancient, collapsing, temple was a great idea!? In what world would any of the already mentally and physically tortured members of the Digital Circus ever want to partake in such a life threatening adventure?
“Gotta admit! He’s being real creative with this one!” Jax shouted beside her, his usual smug grin wobbling with hidden fear he was keeping to himself.
“I’m going to kill him when we get back, I swear to GOD!” Screamed Zooble, who was keeping pace as best as they could manage next to the two of them. “This is what I get for trying to go on an adventure!”
With their strange body parts, they ran with a slight limp that hindered their speed slightly. But Pomni wasn’t about to suggest she and Jax carry them, they were pissed off enough as it was. And for good reason…
“But before Caine, I’m killing YOU first, Jax!” Zooble yelled at the purple rabbit, their asymmetrical eyes glaring daggers into the back of his skull. “We wouldn’t even be fleeing from this thing if you hadn’t tried to with it!”
“Aw, c’mon, Zoobie! We gotta make these little adventures interesting, somehow!” Jax turned back to give them a shit eating grin, his famous smile restored now that he had an opportunity to make his usual snarky remarks. “Plus, I know you would never put me in the ground, Zoobs. You’d miss me too much.”
Pomni witnessed the last bit of Zooble’s patience break, watching as they dislocated one of their arms and tossed it straight at Jax. Their outstretched palm latched around the overall-wearing jerk’s throat, choking him with all their might and yelling an endless stream of censored profanities.
“Guys, please!” Pomni begged, knowing her pleas fell on deaf ears.
It was hopeless trying to get the bickering pair to cooperate. It had seemed they even began the adventure pissed off at one another. From the beginning Jax had constantly been trying to get a ruse out of Zooble, and Zooble had been extra snappy towards anything the pesky rabbit seemed to say or do. Pomni had no idea as to why the two of them were extra antagonistic today. Truth be told, they had been particularly jeering with one another in the week.
Little quarrels here and there, Zooble often refusing to stand near or even speak to Jax, and even Jax seemed to be uncharacteristically put off at times by Zooble’s behavior. Whatever was going on between the two of them, it was definitely something personal. And to make matters worse, an incredible hindrance to completing their adventures and making it out in one piece.
As if to prove that point, Pomni watched in horror as Zooble and Jax both tripped and crashed into the sandy covered tiles below in a blur of limbs. Zooble’s pieces were flung all over the place, and Pomni skidded to a halt to try and scoop up every piece of them she could manage to hold.
“Get up!” Pomni shouted, handing an armful of Zooble parts to Jax as she grasped for the others.
Jax scrambled to grab any part of Zooble he could find, somehow ending up with their head in his pile of bits; to Pomni’s dismay…
“Don’t worry, Zoobs. I got you.” Jax told them, his reassurance more of a playful mockery.
“I ing despise you…” Zooble growled.
“ENOUGH FIGHTING!” Pomni demanded, shoving Jax forward and gripping onto Zooble’s torso and other parts as tight as she could. “JUST RUN!”
Pomni pushed Jax again, stepping out of the way just in time as the monsterous insect behind them lunged at the spot they had been standing in. The creature kicked up a flurry of dust as it hit the ground, sending stinging particles into Pomni’s mouth and eyes.
“Crap! Crap!” Pomni cursed, coughing violently as she attempted to blink the sand from her eyes.
“Eyes ahead, Pomni!” Zooble ordered, one of their arms in Pomni’s hold reaching to force her eyelids open.
“Hey, does that look like a ledge up ahead to you?” Jax began to observe, then yelped as the ground suddenly ended beneath them.
The hallway had suddenly slanted, and the trio all collectively yelled in unison as they slid further and further into the dark depths of the temple. Once the pathway leveled out again, they rolled to a painful stop and lay stunned for a brief moment.
Pomni groaned, recollecting all of the Zooble parts that had slipped from her hold. Once all of her Zooble bits were accounted for, she turned to check on her other two companions.
Jax had wrapped his arms tightly around Zooble’s head, their face still pressed deeply into his chest as he continued to recoup after their fall.
“Uh, hello?” Zooble’s muffled voice hummed against Jax’s chest. “I can’t breathe.”
“Oh!” Jax shook the fright from his face, pulling Zooble’s decapitated head from his body and giving them an almost pensive grin. “Least you had a soft landing, eh?”
“Don’t forget we’re running for our lives still, idiot…” Zooble reminded the agitating rabbit.
Pomni could not help but note Zooble’s odd change in tone, and the darkened color around the area of their face Pomni would consider their cheeks. Staring ahead once again, Pomni felt her heart drop as she faced what now lay before them.
The sandy pathway extended a few paces in front of the group, but then immediately cut off into nothingness. And this time, it wasn’t just a slant into the ground. What stood before them now was a black void filled with slow, spinning, cubes. The floating shapes were the only semblance of a pathway now that could lead them to the other side. Pomni squinted, and very faintly she could see a stone door that awaited the end of the blackness.
“You’ve got to be kidding me…” Pomni whined, hugging the Zooble parts to her body as she began to fill with dread. “How are we supposed to make it across that?”
“Simple, climb over the freaky, floaty, cubey thingies.” Jax shrugged, sounding as nonchalant as ever.
“Simple?” Zooble echoed, their tone gruff and disbelieving. “In what world, digital or real, would that be simple?”
Pomni opened her mouth to argue, but the echoing pitter-patter of insect-like feet and gruff growls growing behind them forced her to act.
“We don’t have a choice! Just go!” Pomni screeched, rushing ahead just as the insect crashed behind them at the bottom of the slanted hallway.
Jax and Pomni both ran for the ledge, holding tight to their Zooble parts as they braced themselves to leap. Without hesitation they jumped as soon as the hallway cut off before them. They flew through the darkened space, feet managing to stick the landing upon the first cube before them without slipping. They waited briefly to time their next jump, leaping together once the next cube became balanceable. Behind them, Pomni heard the giant insect’s blood curdling bellows. She did not dare lose her focus on traversing the floating cubes, however, prepping with Jax for another jump.
“Gah!” Jax exclaimed.
When Pomni looked back to check on him, she caught him pulling his foot from a square hole in the top of the cube.
“There’s ways for us to fall into these things?” Pomni grimaced, now realizing multiple of the cubes had large holes along them.
“There’s just a few more to jump across, come on!” Zooble insisted, their eyes staring with horror directly behind them. “And maybe make it snappy?”
Pomni chanced a glance back, regretting the decision immediately once she saw the beast was in fact flying towards them.
“It has ing wings?” Pomni screeched.
“Yep! So let’s get going before we both become little bug snacks, okay?” Jax insisted, his voice sounding a lot more urgent now that the looming danger was right on their heels.
Clutching onto their pieces of Zooble, the pair jumped to the next cube. Their heightened urgency made their leap a little less graceful in the process, causing Pomni to almost trip over the edge. Luckily, one of Zoobles arms gripped onto the back of her jester uniform and yanked her away from the harrowing danger.
“C’mon! One more then we’re there!” Zooble urged, voice growing more hopeful now that the end was in sight.
Pomni and Jax exchanged a look, nodding before running and launching themselves to the next cube. They barely avoided the hole gaping at the top of the cube, managing to stick the landing almost perfectly.
“Okay! One more!” Pomni was somehow managing to smile, relieved this whole traumatizing ordeal would soon be over with. “Alright, one, two, three-”
As she was counting down the cube suddenly lurched beneath her. She cried out, falling back as she ended up suddenly backwards. Her eyes caught a brief glimpse of the bug’s buzzing wings, guessing it had crashed its entire weight into the cube. Her body didn’t meet solid ground, instead falling into the open hole in the top of the cube. She dropped most of Zooble’s pieces into the empty space, gripping onto the lip with a single palm as she dangled in thin air.
“No, no! J-Jax! Help me up, please!” Pomni begged, hoping her cries would be enough to convince the usually selfish bunny to assist her.
She watched him hesitate, eyes darting from the exit, to her, then to the massive bug now crawling around the cube they stood upon.
He wasn’t going to leave her, was he? Knowing Jax, though, he most definitely could…
“JAX!” Zooble’s voice filled with anger shouted in his arms. “Help her, it!”
“I…” Jax muttered, his eyes fixing on the brightly lit door a single jump away.
“Jax.” Zooble’s voice flatly stated, their tone losing its edge suddenly.
Pomni watched Jax look down at Zooble’s face in his palms, eyes uncertain but attentive to what they had to say.
“Just this once think of someone other than yourself.” Zooble pleaded, their face twisting with a surprising amount of emotion. “Please.”
Jax almost seemed to reel back at the words, the bickering pair now left staring at one another in an unspoken silence only the two of them could grasp the severity of.
The monstrous insect’s body lurched the cube once more, and Jax now found himself losing his own balance and dropping Zooble’s head.
“No!” He yelled, their triangular face just out of reach as it bounced into the hole to join Pomni.
Pomni outstretched her free hand, managing to catch Zooble but in the process lost part of her grip on the edge of the hole.
“G-god! I can’t hold on much longer. Jax! Please!” Pomni begged, straining her whole body as she forced herself to use every bit of strength to not let go.
Pomni watched Jax stand frozen in place, a million thoughts crossing the brim of his brow as he took a single step back. She swore she caught his limbs shaking, and everything about his body language told her he was in flight mode, not fight.
He was going to leave them behind…
Just as Jax was about to turn to flee, the bug reared up directly behind him. It extended it’s wings and legs out, roaring with triumph now that it had corned its prey. It’s dripping mandibles glistened with drool, ready to devour its newly found meal.
Jax stumbled back in fright, tripping directly into the hole and slamming into Pomni and Zooble. All three of the colorful characters yelled as they dropped into the cube, which luckily was not as deep as the darkness inside had led them to believe. Pomni landed on her back, knocking the wind from her digital lungs as pain coursed through her body. Jax was laying on his stomach off to the side, while Zooble remained in pieces amongst all their other scattered parts.
As Pomni struggled to catch her shaky breaths, the glint of glowing lights blinked into view from the hole they had fallen through. Only they weren’t lights, but dozens of beady, beaming, eyeballs glaring down at them with hungry desire. Pomni swallowed a screech of fear, unable to react as she braced herself for the beast to slide through and feast upon them. However, she quickly realized the giant bug was far too big to fit through the hole, watching with wide eyes as it grasped it’s short legs feebly to try and get at them. It struggled for a few more moments before roaring with frustration and zipping out of view.
The beat of its wings grew quieter and quieter, until all that was left was the eerie silence filled with their heavy breaths.
“Ugh…”
Pomni heard Zooble groan, her head falling to the side to view the shapely character trying to pull all of themselves back together again.
“A-are you okay?” Pomni asked, pushing herself up weakly and crawling over to hand them one of their legs.
“No.” Zooble responded, popping their head back onto their body as their gaze rested on something behind Pomni.
Pomni turned slowly, finding Jax was back on his feet and watching them both with an unreadable expression. When Zooble’s hardened stare was upon him, however, he crossed his arms and turned his back to them pointedly. Facing Zooble once again, Pomni watched their brows constrict with anger. But then, it quickly changed into something else… almost like regret… or grief?
Once Zooble had their final piece in, they wobbly got to their feet. They watched Jax briefly, almost as if they were waiting for him to turn around, before crossing their own arms and lowering their gaze. Pomni remained seated, trying to decipher what exactly was being exchanged between the two of them that she could not see.
“I can’t believe it…” Zooble finally mumbled, their voice almost too quiet to make out.
“You’re going to need to speak up; if you wanted me to hear that.” Jax quipped, his voice monotone and barely putting forth any energy.
“I said I can’t believe you!” Zooble shouted, their vexed exclamation echoing off the four sided space around them.
“I need you to be more specific, Zoobs.” Jax shrugged, turning to face them now. “Because you could mean a whole number things at this point-”
“You know exactly what I ing mean.” Zooble accused, pointing a finger in his direction and taking a step towards him. “No more playing dumb, Jax. You were going to leave us behind! Typical, absolutely typical!”
Zooble pressed their palm to their forehead, looking distressed as they began to pace around the small space. Pomni had never seen the geometric character so fed up and overwhelmed. It was clear something had snapped, but what exactly?
“I have no idea why I keep letting myself have even a smidge of hope over and over that you’ll finally change!”
“Change how?” Jax pressed, frowning and squinting his eyes at them as he refused to move from where he stood.
“At all!” Zooble yelled, finally halting their shuffling to face him once more. “I don’t know what makes me stupid enough to think one day you’re going to wake up and finally decide to be a decent person for a change. That you’re going to realize how selfish and pathetic and lonely you truly are, and actually make even a fraction of an effort to be better. Instead of using everyone around you for your sick little games, because you don’t have an ounce of shame or decency within yourself to even recognize that what you do is so inconsiderably wrong. And quite frankly, sad!”
“Ohoho! Coming for my throat, I see?” Jax lifted his hands unseriously in a defensive manner. “Well news flash, Zoobie, I’m not changing. Not for anyone, and not for you. Believe it or not, I like how I am. So you can call me all the names you want, it won’t make a difference.”
“God, you’re…” Zooble almost growled, meeting him eye to eye. “... just awful. It’s no wonder no one in the Circus likes you, I don’t know how anyone has managed to put up with your bull for so long…”
Pomni caught Jax’s defiant expression faltering, catching a brief look of bitterness in his pupils before he blinked it away and smiled once more.
“Oh, but haven’t you, Zooble?” Jax replied with a cocky tone, “Crucial evidence would suggest otherwise. I’d say you’ve managed to put up with my “BS” real good. ”
“D-don’t…” Zooble stuttered, eyes shooting over to Pomni’s before landing back to Jax with a glare. “Do not bring that up here. Besides, that’s done. For good.”
“Right.” Jax rolled his eyes, leaning slightly to stare at them closely. “That’s what you said last time.”
“Um… guys?” Pomni finally budded in, unable to help her festering curiosity any longer. “Is this about us almost dying still or…?”
“Don’t worry about it, Pomni-” Zooble began, but Jax stepped in front of them mid sentence.
“Zooble is too ashamed to ever admit it anyway.” Jax challenged, gazing back at them with a smirk.
“Jax…” Zooble warned in a tone that sounded like they were clenching the jaw they did not have.
“Admit what?” Pomni pressed, getting to her feet and looking up at the pair with visible interest that was mixed with the apprehensiveness of pushing them for the truth. “I can tell whatever it is between you both is what’s led us to be trapped in here. You both have been fighting for a while now, more than usual at least… So shouldn’t we talk about it? So we can try to work it out?”
“Pomni…” Zooble sighed, clutching their more stiff arm with their more flexible hand as they gazed away. “It’s… a lot more complicated than that.”
“What’s complicated?” Pomni questioned, trying her best to be bold.
“Ugh, us, clowny.” Jax scoffed, moving to bump his hip against Zooble’s. “I’m surprised it’s not more obvious.”
“What?” Pomni cocked her head, looking back and forth between them with even more confusion. “I’m sorry, what am I missing?”
“Stop…” Zooble bumped Jax away from them, crossing their arms and wincing as they prepared themselves for what they were about to say. “Pomni,” they exhaled heavily, seemingly extremely hesitant about what they were trying to reveal. “Ugh, I never thought I’d be telling anyone this… Look. Me and Jax have been…”
“Seeing one another pretty much ever since Zooble got here.” Jax interrupted, smugly looking at Zooble whose expression turned to both shock and rage at the sudden revelation.
“Don’t ing say it like that!” Zooble exclaimed, the horn-like appendages atop their head shaking with how enraged they looked. Though, it could also be embarrassment. “And it didn’t start as soon as I got here, don’t make
up.”
Seeing one another?
It didn’t take long for that statement to settle within Pomni’s brain, a single click sounding off once everything began to make sense.
Oh… oh.
“Wait…” Pomni’s eyes widened, darting from Jax and to the very flustered Zooble as the pieces of the puzzle slid into place. “Really? You both? I-I mean, I’m not trying to be rude or anything but…”
Pomni admittedly was even more confused than before. Her perplexity wasn’t exactly about what their relationship was, but… how and why they had managed to have something between them at all. To her, Zooble and Jax were just about as compatible as fire and water.
And as for chemistry? Pomni would have thought any person alive would take interest in anyone else before ever finding interest in Jax. Hell, the monstrous insect that had been hunting them would have probably been a better pick than Jax. His revolting behavior paired with this carelessness for anyone but himself was in no way charming, nor… romantic…
So why Jax… and why did the two of them ever have anything together in the first place? What could he have ever possibly said or done to make Zooble even remotely interested in him? The one person in the circus who actively did not give his selfish nonsense the time of day usually.
“Pomni? You good?” Zooble asked, snapping their fingers in front of her eyes multiple times.
“Ha! We broke her!” Jax cackled, pointing to her pinwheel eyes that had been replaced by dazed, black, squiggles.
“Huh?” Pomni finally snapped free from her millions of questions, staring at the duo with a dumbfounded look as she tried to think of what to say next. “S-sorry. I’m just… confused. You two, at least to me, always seemed like you hated each other…”
“Oh trust me, we do.” Zooble huffed, side eyeing Jax who wasn’t exactly giving them the same distaste back.
“C’mon, Zoobs. You don’t mean that. After all, if that were the case then you would have stopped sleeping with me ages ago.”
“JAX-” Zooble almost shrieked, grabbing his ears and yanking them down painfully.
“AGH, what? Pomni already knows about us now! What does it matter if we talk about what we do in the bedroom- AH!” Zooble yanked harder the more he carried on. “H-hey, save the foreplay for later, will ya?”
“Jesus-” Zooble groaned, releasing his ears as they snapped back from the tension. The momentum sent him flying backwards, to Zooble’s delight, watching him fall with a thud to his back. “You’re insufferable.”
To say Pomni had learned a lot more than she had ever bargained for about the intimacy of this relationship was a wild understatement. And she hated that her first thought was how. The Digital World gave them a lot of things, but due to its all ages programming sexual organs were not included. She’d checked…
“B-but I still want to know…” Pomni stuttered, rubbing her hands together timidly as she waited for their attention to be fully focused on her once more.
“How we do it?” Jax asked, still laying on the floor with his head resting on his palm.
“N-NO!” Pomni felt her cheeks immediately burn, “I-I mean… maybe sorta? No, no! I just want to know if you two really have been… doing those kinds of things… Then, why do you fight all the time? And why has it gotten so bad recently? Don’t relationships usually mean you like one another at least a little bit?”
Pomni watched Zooble’s expression shift, eyebrows rising then falling with visible confliction. Even Jax was silent, rising to his feet and seeming hesitant himself on how exactly to answer the question.
“What? No snarky response?” Zooble probed the purple rabbit, though their eyes avoided looking at him.
“You’re the one pressed over the whole situation, Zooble.” Jax replied, leaning on his hip and waving a hand their direction. “If you really wanna explain this all of “this” to Pomni you may as well tell her everything.”
“ no…” Zooble refused, spinning away from the both of them to gaze up at the hole in the ceiling. “Let’s just get out of here and pretend this never happened. Jax, can you reach the top?”
“Hmm…” Jax observed the opening, and as Pomni followed suit she could tell even with his tall height he would not be able to reach the lip without help. “Nope. Going to have to boost one of ourselves out of here.”
“Alright…” Zooble sighed, “Go ahead and lift me up I suppose- GAH”
As Zooble had begun to speak, Jax had crawled onto their shoulders and was now balancing atop their head.
“JAX!” Zooble yelled in rage, planting their feet firmly below them and grasping at Jax’s ankles to steady him. “You son of a-”
“Now I can reach it!” Jax informed them, his head poking through the hole with a satisfied grin. “And the exit is still right across the way.”
“Just make sure not to leave us behind this time…” Zooble reminded him sharply, obviously still upset by his actions from earlier.
It made more sense to Pomni now why Zooble had been as upset as they previously were about Jax’s desertion. Even if the pair were on shaky terms now, and who knows if they always had been since Zooble arrived. Having the type of intimate interactions they were engaging in for as long as Jax had said… had to have sprouted some sort of feelings between them. Surely?
At least, it certainly seemed that way based on Zooble’s passion in the words they had shouted at Jax earlier.
Did Zooble of all people really have feelings for Jax? That possibility alone almost made Pomni want to remain in the cube and hear every little detail of what had transpired between the two since they met.
“Can you stand on your tiptoes, or, whatever you got at the tips of your feet Zoobs? I need a bit more of a boost.” Jax called down, his bunny tail poking from his overalls wagging with the self pleasure of annoying Zooble.
“Just pull yourself out with those noodles for arms!” Zooble shot back, straining up to lift him a little higher.
“You’re one to talk about noodle arms-” Jax began to retort, then there was a crash that rocked the whole cube.
Zooble did their very best to keep upright, wobbling slightly and keeping their grip fastened around Jax’s heels.
“What was that?” Pomni called up, fearful that she already knew the answer.
“Do I need to answer that?” Jax responded, voice monotone and sounding fed up with the predicament they were in.
A loud roar erupted from outside the cube, and Jax let out his own yell in response. It seemed the giant bug had returned to try and capture its quarry once again.
“Jax!” Zooble pulled him downward immediately, bringing him toppling down atop them as he was yanked back into the squared space.
The monster’s mandibles snapped through the opening, but due to its massive size it was prevented from entering any further. Pomni held her breath as she watched the beast claw relentlessly, though it was still in vain. They may all be trapped, but they were at least still safe. Once the beastly bug realized getting to them was still a losing game, it flew off with another bellow of irritation.
Once certain it was gone, Pomni lowered her gaze to the tangle of limbs Zooble and Jax were now twisted in. Jax had fallen atop Zooble after they had pulled him back to safety, and was now slowly rising to stare down at them with a grin.
“You just saved me.” Jax teased, eyes half lidded as he gave them a rather sultry look.
“Get off me.” Zooble gruffed, not at all entertaining his behavior.
They shoved his weight from their body, rising and brushing dust from their frame as they stepped away from him.
“Guess we’re stuck here… fantastic.” Zooble grumbled, eyes notably looking back at Jax with distaste. “As if things couldn’t get any worse…”
“Why are… things so bad anyway?” Pomni treaded carefully, rubbing one of the yellow buttons of her outfit as she added. “Between you both, I mean.”
“Like I said, Pomni…” Zooble sighed, staring at her with a tired look that revealed the depths of the emotions they were hesitant to reveal. “That’s a long and complicated story.”
“Well… we aren’t exactly going anywhere anytime soon.” Pomni pointed out, looking up at their only escape. “It would be a good way to pass time… A-and I’m not trying to be nosy! I respect your privacy if you want it!” Pomni quickly explained, hoping her asking Zooble for further explanations wasn’t too intruding. ”I’m sorry, it’s all just…”
“Really confusing?” Zooble finished for her.
“Very.” Pomni couldn’t help but give a faint grin, relieved Zooble didn’t seem to mind her interest.
“That’s one way to describe it all…” Zooble nodded, turning slowly to stare at Jax who had gotten back on his feet as was staring at them with a raised brow.
“Whatcha two whispering about, huh?” He piped up, taking a few paces near them. “Telling Pomni about our secrets after all?”
Zooble squinted their eyes at Jax, then looked back at Pomni.
“Maybe… talking about it could help you both resolve some things?” Pomni suggested.
“Tch.” Jax snorted, raising a hand to cover his snickering. “Good one, Pomni. When has talking things through ever solved anything?”
“Most of the world's problems, actually…” Pomni muttered, irritated by Jax’s carelessness.
“You know what, Jax. Yeah.” Zooble spoke up, crossing their arms and glaring defiantly at the cocky bunny. “I think I will talk about it. And I am going to tell Pomni everything.”
“Oh, really?” Jax blinked, looking pleasantly surprised.
“Yep.” Zooble nodded, stepping closer so they could make direct eye contact with him. “And when I say everything, I mean, everything. Every little detail, word, and ty little thing you’ve ever done. Maybe that’s what it’s finally going to take to get it through your stubborn and immature brain all the wrong you’ve done.”
“You’re no perfect angel yourself, Zoobie. But, go right ahead.” Jax urged, sitting with his legs crossed and flicking his head to make his ears twitch. “I’m all ears. You’re in for a real treat, Pomni.”
“Why do you seem excited?” Pomni asked, maneuvering to find a place near him to sit. “Aren’t you worried Zooble might reveal something… bad? Or at least embarrassing…” Jax seemed way too casual about the fact Zooble was about to discuss rather private and possibly erotic topics involving himself.
“There’s nothing I’ve said or done to be embarrassed about, Pomni.” Jax told her, still sounding as unbothered as ever. “I think it’ll be fun to relive it all.” Jax explained, reaching into the pocket of his overalls and pulling out a bag of popcorn.
How long has he had that in there? Pomni blinked in disbelief as he took a few kernels in his palm and began to munch them gleefully. I wonder if he’d share some…
“Hah!” Zooble fake laughed, obviously unable to agree with any of Jax’s statements. “Let Pomni be the judge of all that after we’re done.”
Oh boy, what am I getting myself into? Pomni thought, her pulse spiking as a surprising amount of anticipation began to course through her chest. She took a seat not far from Jax, hoping her eagerness wasn’t too obvious.
“For the record,” Pomni spoke up, gazing at the both of them as she continued. “I’m here to listen. I hope you don’t think I’m going to be able to, uh, find a solution to any of your problems after hearing all of this from you.” Pomni gestured to Zooble now, hoping her refusal to play the role of a therapist would be taken well.
The last thing she wanted to do was get roped into a tricky situation such as Zooble and Jax’s “relationship”. Though, she feared she may already be in too deep at this point. Whatever she was about to learn, she better buckle up.
“I’m not looking for you to fix anything, Pomni. I’ve tried to do that myself for too long…” Zooble sighed, sitting across from her and Jax as they tried to maneuver their odd limbs into a position that was comfortable. “I simply just… want to talk. I’ve kept all this in for too long. I’ve let this go for too long.” They added, notably staring at Jax as they said those words.
“I’m not proud of any of it. If I could go back to the beginning, I never would have done any of this… but I can’t change what has happened between us.” Zooble closed their eyes briefly, taking in a deep breath before gazing at Pomni with a hardened expression.
“But, I’ll start from the beginning. Because it all began I’d say the moment we met… the first day I arrived to the Digital Circus…”
