𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧 how Diamond wished to spend her weekend—seven weekends in a row stuck at a family-owned restaurant, cleaning chicken masala between the floor cracks because parents weren’t watching their children who have a tendency to throw whatever in their direction on the floor.
This was NOT the adult life Diamond looked forward to when finally leaving home to attend the University of Washington (U.W). Built in one of the cloudiest cities surrounded by endless beauty of mother nature, miles from Orlando, Florida. One of the hottest cities in one of the hottest states, cluttered with people and flashy attractions. The only similarity that felt most like home was rain.
Never once did Diamond imagine herself so far from home, but unfortunately, U.W was the only institution to offer a full ride for track and field. She accepted immediately and officially became a Husky.
But it didn’t cover food, travel, personal expenses, and bills. Diamond’s mother could only send so much with other mouths to feed, being a foster mother to five other children. She knew soon enough the responsibility would be hers to bear as it normally had been.
The easy one, her mother would describe Diamond.
The one who never cried, never asked for much, never made life too difficult. The one who always had to make a way because there was no one else to do it for her. And in a household filled with children every few months or years, it’s easy to forget the easy one when schedules were packed with appointments, drama, and school—which left Diamond to fulfill not only the role of an only child, which that she was, but a parent too.
Moving to an unfamiliar environment added to that lonesome feeling, but it was also a fresh breath of air. Therapeutic even.
Diamond tossed the last thick lump of sauce-covered napkins in the bucket filled with the rest of the meal. Apparently, the mop was broken and the owner’s hard-headed son left to buy a new mop, yet it’s been hours since he returned. It seems he prioritized his Friday night plans, which his parents were heavily against. Something about catching a movie with friends, a harmless movie Mr. Devgn feared would install unhealthy mindsets.
Something Diamond should’ve been doing if she hadn’t canceled plans to pick up an extra shift.
Mrs. Devgn caught sight of Diamond heading back and perked from her seat behind the register, pausing the drama she was watching on her phone. “Thank you for handling that mess and staying a bit late. When it gets crazy on the weekends, I know we can count on you to come through.” She said and then frowned at her sauce-covered fingers. “I’m sorry you had to clean bare-handed. Karan should be back any second now with that mop.”
Diamond bit back her scoff. That boy wasn’t coming back and everyone knew it too. “It’s not a problem. At least it wasn’t piping hot.”
“Oh, god, no! That would be a disaster!”
Ayra, the Devgn’s third child, appeared through the red curtains with a scoff. “Karan’s not coming back, ma. You picked the wrong child for errands. We all know he’s watching that R-rated movie Baba said no to.”
Mrs. Devgn smacked her shoulder, knocking out the AirPod hidden beneath her hair that she was secretly listening to music on. “Don’t let your father hear.” She whispered, peeking over her shoulder for her husband nowhere in sight. “He’s already in a pissy mood dealing with your other brother and his costly habits. Go make yourself useful and take them drinks to table three.”
“You said I could ring!” Ayra pouted.
“Go!”
Ayra couldn’t defy Mrs. Devgn’s stern look, daring her child to challenge her authority. She flung her head back with a dragged groan before taking the tray of drinks to table three.
“Don’t let me hold you up, Diamond. You wash up and take your lunch. I warmed you a plate. It's in the break room since I didn’t trust David and his sticky fingers.”
“You don’t have to make me lunch every time, Mrs. Devgn. I appreciate it but I don’t want you overworking yourself.”
Mrs. Devgn waved her off. “All my employees must eat. Plus you’re an athlete and so far from home, I know you’re not eating enough home-cooked meals. Now go, wash wash and eat.”
She sat comfortably in her chair and resumed her show.
Diamond knew this wasn’t a fight she could win and Mrs. Devgn was right; she hadn’t eaten enough home-cooked meals. Mostly takeout and cheap ramen. Between classes, practices, and work, exhaustion remained a constant component when it came to cooking and oftentimes cleaning.
After dumping the bucket and washing her hands, Diamond sat at the mini table in the break room and ate her lamb and chicken bowl mixed in silence. She scrolled through her phone catching up with everyone else’s life on Instagram, imagining herself in their shoes. Taking weekend trips out of the country, getting front-row seats at a concert, splurging money on shopping sprees with friends, and going on cute little dates with a significant other.
The kind of thrill Diamond should be experiencing especially during her sophomore year in college, away from her mom and her old life. This was the time to start a new life and create new and better memories outside her usual routine…yet had no idea where to start. And was nearly two years late.
A call paused the story Diamond was currently watching and saw it was her roommate Renesmee calling. She quickly swallowed what was left in her mouth before picking up. “Hey, what’s u—”
“What are you doing and please don’t tell me you’re working?” Renesmee asked as soon as the line connected.
Diamond looked around the small room that smelt heavily of her food clashing with other scents from the kitchen. She debated lying to her friend, but what’s the point when she somehow always knew when she was lying?
Her shoulders fell with defeat as she confirmed, “I’m working. I picked up an extra shift so I won’t be home until eleven-ish, maybe midnight.”
“God, no, Diamond! Why did you say yes to working late on a Friday night?”
“I…need the money,” Diamond replied as if it wasn’t obvious in the first place. “Some people aren’t born with golden spoons like you, Nes.”
From the time she’s known Renesmee since Diamond’s previous roommate dropped out two weeks within the first semester—who was quite literally the nicest and selfless person ever met, whose grandmother occasionally cooked meals and stuffed the pantries with everything found in a grocery store—it was clear her wealth was out of the question. She was always seen with the latest technology, the rarest edition of purses and shoes, and clothes from unheard-of brands, made from raw material that needed to be washed a certain way. Her room was straight out of a Pinterest board compared to Diamond’s which had all that she needed and a poster of her favorite movie. She had pictures in her gallery from all over the world. She even owned an expensive car that would take Diamond two generations to pay off, and could only imagine the price of her house she goes back to every break.
Working wasn’t a word in Renesmee’s vocabulary, but she was a hard-working student. Always up studying while Diamond crashed out in bed. Sometimes it felt like Renesmee was wasting her time in college by how quickly her mind soaked up information. When she’s bored, she’s reading. When she’s about to sleep, she’s reading. When she’s in a good mood, she’s reading. And it wasn’t silly romance or epic fantasies, but thick nonfiction books that gave Diamond a headache, she enjoyed for regular entertainment.
“You’re right. I should be mindful of others' situations and I apologize if I came off ignorant.” Renesmee’s apology would’ve caught Diamond off guard if it wasn’t a usual occurrence. Being wrong and taking accountability was nothing she feared. “But I really needed you off today or at least out by six.”
Diamond paused. “How’d you know I was originally off today?”
“You write your schedule color-coded on the calendar pinned above your bed, silly. Quite literally hard to miss.”
“Oh…right.” Her face heated in embarrassment and picked at a piece of shredded lamb before plopping it in her mouth. “So what’s happening at six?”
“Technically it happens later, but remember my aunt I told you about? The psychic one? Yeah, well, I asked her to look into your future—“
“Now why would you do that?”
“You’re my roommate…and my first college friend. I wanted to make sure you’ll stay in my life forever, or however long life gives. Soft spoiler—I overacted over nothing.” Her nervous chuckle failed to comfort herself, admitting words Diamond found hard to believe.
Her first college friend? Renesmee was always surrounded by people on campus. Of course, when her boyfriend Jacob wasn’t there to scare everyone away with one look.
But the feeling was mutual. Although Renesmee wasn’t Diamond’s first friend in college, she valued their friendship and wanted it to last. The soft spoiler confused her though.
Renesmee’s chippy personality came back to life. “Anyway, I asked her to look into your future and she told me something life-changing will happen tonight.” She mused.
“If it’s Karan coming back with a mop, tell her it’s already too late.” Diamond said into another bite.
“I have no idea who that is but he has nothing to do with tonight.”
“You know I don’t believe in that shit, Nes. I gave up wishing on a star and learned to accept reality, or whatever form of reality I choose to accept.”
She sighed. “I know, but you gotta trust me on this one.”
“Why?”
Silence filled the line but not for too long.
“I can’t say just yet, it’ll spoil the future but trust me. You’ve been ranting about how boring and lonely your life has been since moving to Seattle, wanting to spice it up and meet new people. And I get it, it's not like Florida, but this will change everything. It’s exactly what you need and have been searching for.” She said and there was noise in the background. Faded music, shouting voices, and lots of thick wind. “Come down to La Push. There’s a bonfire happening with lots of hot guys from university and drinks, and the beach—which you’ve said you miss. I can also really use the company of my friend. Please come! Please, please !”
La Push?
That was the exact plan Diamond turned down when a few members on the track team asked if she would pop out. Because Mrs. Devgn asked first about the shift, she declined the outing. This had to be a coincidence. A crazy one that was four damn hours away.
“La Push is nearly four hours away for one. Two, It’s cold as hell. Three, I don’t have a car and Ubering there in this economy is probably over two hundred dollars. Money I’m not tryna spend over she-say.”
“Not a problem! I’ll Venmo you the money. The cold never bothered you anyway, the bonfire will keep you warm if you get cold.”
“I can’t take that from you.” Diamond shut down quickly.
“Why not? There’s more where it came from, remember? Golden spoon.”
“I don’t wanna be indebted to you.”
“What debt? I’m inviting you so I should be the one to take care of the expenses. I promise it’s okay. You don’t need to pay me back.” There was a short pause on the line because Renesmee came back. “Scratch that—pay me back by coming. I’ll hold it over your head if you don’t.”
Diamond never met this aunt Renesmee constantly brought up and chatted with on the phone, or maybe she had and didn’t know with the many people her roommate attracted like a moth to light. But one thing was certain, she made one hell of a case.
Her life has been boring maintaining the same sleep-work-practice-homework schedule, and never felt more alone than she had when first arriving in Washington. Diamond wouldn’t consider herself a borderline introvert, but she would never go out her way to introduce herself to strangers unless it was necessary. Unlike those fortunate enough to link with another upon first meeting, Diamond needed time to warm up to someone. Only then could she be her unfiltered self. But because of those limits she was hesitant to push has caused her life to spiral into uncertainty and unfulfilled satisfaction.
Aside from her job, Diamond had nothing to lose. If her roommate’s supposedly psychic aunt swore down this night would change the trajectory of her sad life, then the risk—including the freezing weather and the four-hour long drive—was worth it.
“Fine. I’ll come to this stupid bonfire and see what the hype is about.” Diamond agreed and had to hold the phone away from Renesmee squealing with excitement.
“Thank you! I’ve already sent the money. Come as fast as you can, I’ll see you here!”
𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗗 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘. The cost to Uber to La Push wasn’t worth the risk and she dreaded the price of heading back to U.W. Even though Renesmee didn’t mind covering the cost, two hundred was still a lot and four hours spent on the road for a word of mouth was delusion at its finest. Hopefully, she could catch a ride back with Renesmee since they were roommates; anything to save money and the installed mindset of feeling indebted even toward genuine acts of kindness.
The parking lot was overfilled with cars packed with party-goers like sardines, dragging their friends to race across the sand and meet others dancing around multiple lit bonfires and scattered tents. Diamond removed her shoes and socks to bury her toes in the cool white sand. She closed her eyes and inhaled the salty dry breeze. It reminded her of Florida aside from the cold, home she missed very much.
“Diamond! You made it!”
Diamond opened her eyes to Renesmee running toward her in a royal blue two-piece bathing suit with a black sheer cover-up tied around her waist. Her long brunette hair danced with the wind, and she had the biggest smile on her pale face with her arms stretched out, knocking Diamond slightly off her feet when she came crashing against her.
Diamond hugged her back with a warm laughter as she balanced herself and Renesmee apologized. She was almost convinced her friend matched her height until she realized Renesmee was lifting on her toes. Not that she was much taller, only an inch or two apart.
“I’m so happy you’re here! You’re in for one hell of a night.” Renesmee pulled away from the hug first, radiating indescribably youth and beauty.
“I would hope so since that’s why I’m here.”
She shook her head with a knowing smile. “How were you able to get off early? I thought your boss was strict on busy days?”
“They are, but I lied. Said I was feeling queasy. My boss offered ginger tea and wanted me to wait it out and see how I felt after a while, but ultimately let me go home. Speaking of which, I am riding back with you right?”
“Of course. I would never leave you here stranded though, I doubt you’ll leave with me after tonight anyway.” Her dark arched brows wiggled, hinting at whatever her supposedly psychic aunt saw in Diamond’s future.
A gift she still refused to believe as it was impossible to see the future and Renesmee had a weird sense of humor. Anything said out of her mouth couldn't be trusted on rare occasions especially when speaking about her insanely wealthy family. Aside from that, she’s very honest for the most part.
“Oh, I definitely will be leaving with you without a doubt.”
Renesmee shook her head, chuckling. Then she wrapped an arm around Diamond’s and pulled her toward the coolers near the grills flipping over burgers and hot dogs. They popped open two cool bottles of strawberry seagrams. The fizzled fruity taste was more like soda than alcohol, a drink easily finished and grabbed for another round. Mango flavor this time.
“I know that’s not Diamond all the way out here? Outside and at a party?” Before she could turn and see who called her out, an arm threw itself around her neck, pulling on her braids. “You said you were picking up an extra shift and couldn’t make it. You lying bitch!”
Diamond knew it was Kimi, her track teammate. She had rich russet skin and wide-set expressive eyes. Her dark loose curls were thrown in a messy bun, dressed in jean shorts and a hot pink bikini top, showing off her athletic figure. Next to her was Tayen, also another track teammate. She had dyed her hair pink but the color had dulled and her roots were growing in black. Neither opposed the chilly weather and treated it like a regular sunny day.
Renesmee spoke up before Diamond could. “That’s because I convinced her to put herself over her job. It’s also her first time in La Push so treat her nice.”
Tayen clasped a hand against Diamond’s shoulder after she was freed from Kimi as if commencing her first experience. “Welcome to La Push and our humbly reservation home to the Quileute tribe, which is open to all who respect our land, culture, and people.”
Kimi leaned forward, covering her mouth as she whispered, “between me and you, this is only a step into the reservation. If you truly want a taste of our enriching culture—my culture as a Makah, I would speak to the elders. God knows they love sharing a good story about our guiding spirits, ancient legends, and whatnot.”
“I’ll consider it, thank you.” Diamond said, sipping her drink and tightening her tote bag on her shoulder. She had no idea where her tribe was located but it didn’t dull the excitement to learn about it and more.
“Don’t pressure her, Kimi,” Tayen chuckled. “She’s always migrating people to her grandma so she doesn’t have to sit and listen to her talk off her ear.”
Kimi playfully shoved Tayen aside to defend herself and this vile accusation that gave Diamond and Renesmee a good laugh. “Hey, she loves fresh new faces! She’s practically forcing me to bring people home even if I gotta kidnap them and drag them across the damn border.”
Renesmee threw out a protective arm, guiding Diamond behind her. “No one’s kidnapping my roommate so don’t even think about it. I promised to get her home in one piece.”
Kimi lifted her hands in defeat, finally backing off.
Renesmee turned to Diamond and took in her attire. “I hope you’re not planning on getting wet in jeans?” She asked and her brows furrowed in confusion.
“It’s sixty degrees…?”
“That’s what the bonfire and alcohol is for, track star. We've ran in colder conditions. You’ll warm up in no time.” Tayen said, which was true. This weather was nothing to her but a different kind of cold compared to Florida. Shorts were still acceptable clothing during Florida’s chilly days, but in Washington, shorts was basically signing a death wish.
“You did bring a bathing suit, right?” Asked Renesmee. “Where’s your bag?”
“What bag? I left work straight here,” she chewed her bottom lip, motioning toward her plain black jacket, t-shirt, and jeans. “This is all I have.”
Renesmee kissed her teeth. “I told you to bring a bag. It’s beach night! Every couple of months the reservation hosts a beach party open to the public. There’s fun activities, movies, music, games, and the only few opportunities we can stay on the beach and sleep in cute tents without being fined.”
“That’s not what you told me.” Diamond said. “You told me to show up so I assumed this was a few hours type situation then we drive back, not an overnight thing. Why didn’t you tell me all this when we were on the phone? You know I know nothing about this state besides U.W. let alone bonfire night in a city I’ve never been to.”
Her eyes narrowed with guilt. “Oh. It must’ve slipped my mind when I got too excited about you coming. I’m sorry.”
Of course, Diamond wasn’t mad at her roommate. It was an honest mistake. “It’s fine. I just don’t have anything else to wear, and I’m not particularly fond of swimming in ice-cold water. I’m unprepared which I don’t like being. But I guess I can participate for the night.”
Another risk she was willing to take.
“Okay, don’t panic ladies, I brought extra bathing suits. You’re free to borrow either one and any other stuff needed for tonight. There’s also plenty of shops in Forks too.” Kimi and the rest offered to chip in to ensure a smooth night.
Kimi was already guiding Diamond away from the beach and from Tayen and Renesmee to her small black car in the parking lot.
She changed in the backseat while Kimi kept watched, and talked Diamond’s ear off about various topics. Most were of those she hadn’t met, coach being a pain in the ass last practice, homework due tonight that she hadn’t started on; and had even proposed Diamond should share a tent with her and Tayen since Renesmee would obviously be sleeping with her boyfriend, to which Diamond agreed. She didn’t want to impose on their lovey-doveyness. It would be awkward too. The two were inseparable.
The strapless one-piece was a little loose around the chest area but it was a perfect fit. They wore the same size in clothes though Kimi was more muscular with bigger breasts and wider hips as opposed to Diamond with both the thighs and the ass but somewhat smaller breasts. She tied her small-sized braids back from her face and shoved her clothes into her tote bag before getting out.
Renesmee was spotted with her boyfriend Jacob as they were walking back to the beach. Tayen was nowhere to be found, nothing out of the ordinary. There were a lot more shirtless men than there were before. All long-haired, muscular, with a tribal tattoo on their arm much similar to Jacob's if not the same. And all unaffected by the chilly weather.
Jacob had his arms wrapped around her slim body, reaching over her shoulder to bite into the chili hotdog Renesmee was feeding him. She squealed when chili kept dropping on her, so he struck out his tongue and licked wherever it fell along her skin.
Diamond wasn’t aware of the creepy smile on her face until her cheeks were aching. Renesmee and Jacob were disgustingly cute together, practically meant to be. Their warm interaction highlighted the loneliness weighing her heart. They had the type of love Diamond wanted to experience someday if life allowed it to happen.
She hadn’t the best experience with love. She hadn’t even been in a relationship before or surpassed the talking stage. Most was due to her priorities with track and solidifying her career so she wouldn’t end up like her mother, stuck in the same neighborhood she was raised in. Comfortable with nothing and too afraid to feed on any inner ambition.
But also because the wanna-be men in her life weren’t looking for a partner but a replacement for their mother.
And while Diamond was content by herself with friends, she still hoped to live out that first love fantasy in time.
“Oh, Diamond! Kimi! You’re back already.” With a gasp, Renesmee placed the half-eaten hotdog back on the plate and tried to pull free from Jacob but his arms kept her secure against his broad chest.
She slapped his arms, but it didn’t stop his tongue from grazing up her neck and reaching her earlobe. Her cheeks burned bright red as he muttered something that only she could hear unless it was the fire casting its glow.
Kimi gagged as if she heard him. “You guys are disgusting.”
“Jacob!” Renesmee giggled, hitting him again. “You’re so—let me go! We’re in company.”
“They don’t mind.” He said while kissing along the rim of her ear. Renesmee rolled her eyes, yet didn’t stop him this time.
“I mind. Plus you reek of outside!”
“You never minded it.”
Renesmee said nothing, proving his point.
Kimi looked past the couple and stood straight when someone or something caught her attention. “Hi, Edward!” She greeted the mass of people with a wave Diamond was unable to pinpoint.
Jacob immediately ripped himself off Renesmee and composed himself into a respectable man any woman would bring home to meet her family. No longer the horny man whispering nonsense in his girlfriend’s ear, who also pushed herself from her boyfriend. The quick action caused the hotdog to slip off the paper plate. She adjusted her bikini top before pushing her voluminous hair over her shoulders to cover her chest.
Kimi’s face deepened a dark color of red, her lips pressed tight and her cheeks were inflated with air as she struggled to contain her laughter. It was then when the couple looked back to nothing that she couldn’t hold it anymore and laughed in their faces.
Jacob kissed his teeth while pushing back his short dark hair. “You play too damn much. He’s not even allowed on our land without permission.”
“Yet you still fell for you.” Kimi hugged her stomach, laughing still. Jacob jumped at her and she flinched, but it didn’t stop her laughter.
“Edward?” Diamond questioned while slipping on her jacket. The name sounded familiar but couldn’t be sure since her roommate talked about people often when Diamond’s just getting back from practice so their names mush together.
“My d—my cousin. You’ve met him before, remember? Tall and moody with bright eyes.” Renesmee knelt to pick up the sandy hotdog and placed it on the plate which Jacob took from her to toss out.
“Ah right.”
Diamond did remember her cousin, Edward. He visited every once in a while with his wife, Bella. They often took Renesmee out on weekly dinners that would last for hours or even days and had her coming back to the dorm at odd hours. They were nice and welcoming and Edward even once guessed a thought on Diamond’s mind before she said it.
Though it’s strange because while they weren’t Renesmee’s parents, whom she had never met, as young as they were, their interactions were far from cousins and more parental. Their appearances alone were uncanny especially when compared to Bella. The two of them were constantly hitting her line.
“Jacob, you remember Diamond?” Renesmee changed the subject when Jacob returned with another hotdog.
He extended his hand toward Diamond which she took. “The roommate, of course. We always meet in awkward situations.”
“We do.” Oftentimes when the couple were engaging in sexual activities. Renesmee forgets to give Diamond a heads up or put something on the door, which sucked on days when she couldn’t wait to rot in bed after studies.
“We should change that. I hear so much about you from Nessy, I feel we’re already the best of friends.” It came out as a tease directed to his girlfriend who didn’t mind him. Her attention was fixated on their surroundings, scanning the crowd as if searching for danger.
“Likewise and we should.” Diamond agreed. Her reply sounded as awkward as it was. Jacob wasn’t a stranger in a sense but they weren’t close on any level. Their only connection was Renesmee.
“Anyway, I’m glad you could make it. Tonight will be a festive of activities so don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and let loose.”
Renesmee hooked an arm around Jacob’s, resting her head against his shoulder. “Lots of big personalities which I know you love very much.” It was said in a teasing manner but she wasn’t wrong.
Diamond had a habit of surrounding herself with big personalities she often could hide behind. Aside from that, she was starting to look forward to tonight aside from whatever the future held. The alcohol kept her warm as well as the bonfire they stood by, feeling herself loosen up. She needed a break from her usual routine—fresh air.
“Why you’re back so early from patrol?” Kimi asked out of nowhere and Diamond felt their eyes on her for reasons she didn’t care to analyze.
Her attention was captured by a fifteen year old girl playing in the water with a boy who looked around her age, possibly a bit older. He would howl like a wolf and beat his chest like a monkey, his short curly hair gone with the wind with his tattoo—just like Jacob—on display. The girl covered her face in embarrassment and splashed water on him with her other hand, causing him to rush after her.
They weren’t the only cute couple in the mix of locals and drunk college students, existing as if only they existed. Jacob and this guy weren’t the only ones showing off this particular tribal tattoo, though it seemed those with it were occupied by a romantic partner. It was like it was an initiation before getting into a relationship.
Jacob ran a hand through his short hair, a stressful sigh filling his lungs as he spoke. “Something’s wrong with Seth.” At this, Kimi panicked and bombarded Jacob with hordes of questions that he had to lift his hand to quiet her so he could continue. “Seth’s fine. He’s as healthy as the rest of us, but we had to cut patrolling short because he needed to come back.”
“Why?” Kimi inquired and Jacob shrugged.
“Who the fuck knows. It’s Seth. His mind was distracted and the p—” A quick look in Diamond’s direction was noted. “—the group struggled to concentrate, so I allowed him to return. But I got worried and followed behind to check on him and ensure he hadn’t knocked his head somewhere. He’s acting stranger than usual.”
So were they, but Diamond didn’t question anything outwardly.
Kimi sighed with relief upon hearing this. “That’s Seth for you. My cousin’s always been a little weird since I can remember. He’s probably hungry.” She chuckled and everyone but Diamond, who didn’t know this person or what he was like, agreed.
“Probably so, it sounds like him for sure. But if Seth is in any kind of trouble I’ll be the first to know, so don’t go alerting Sue or your sister Emily yet.” Jacob pulled Renesmee closer to his side with an arm around her waist. She molded against him, a perfect fit. They were like magnets; unable to go a moment without physical contact.
Kimi tilted back her head to drink the rest of her bottle, only to quickly realize it was emptied. “I need another well-deserved drink after breaking my track record by nine seconds. Diamond, let’s leave these lovebirds to their disgusting conversation.”
Renesmee playfully rolled her eyes. “Our conversation is pretty tamed compared to others.”
“Yes, and I’m never free from them when we’re together.”
Diamond did agree to go with Kimi for another drink, leaving Renesmee behind with her boyfriend who wanted her to remain close. She was in need of another drink, unable to put down the seagrams, and in need of food—something to snack on since Mrs. Devgn’s cooking hit the spot. There were more leftovers, tied in a plastic bag shoved in her purse that hung heavy on her shoulder.
Opting for two little bags of chips, Renesmee was overheard telling Jacob something he needed to know regarding Seth. But instead of outright telling him with words, Diamond watched as her hand caressed his muscular arm in a prolonged manner, starting from his wrist. No words were exchanged the entire time but Jacob’s eyes snapped in Diamond’s direction with shock. She tore away her gaze toward Kimi pouring herself a drink from a questionable clothed bottle. However it was too late since they knew she was watching.
“Are you sure?” His question carried far, and Diamond could now feel their gazes burning holes through her head. It made her self-conscious for some reason.
Like they knew this bathing suit wasn’t a perfect fit, or she’s had way too many seagrams and didn’t save any for everyone else, or there was something on her face no one was telling her about, or something worse.
Jacob shook his head with a chuckle. “That explains everything. Sue will faint once she hears of this.” He responded to Renesmee whose voice hadn’t been heard at all.
But the strangest part—which had nothing to do with Diamond—was how they communicated without words. Spot on as if they were reading each other’s minds. It wasn’t the first she caught her roommate conversing in that manner, and by the looks of it, it wouldn’t be the last.
Kimi returned with her red cup filled with a brown-like substance and offered the cup to Diamond. “Wanna sip? This is the real shit you can’t just buy from any local booze store. This batch takes our elders over forty years to brew, traditions that've been passed down for centuries. Could even be called a potion.”
Diamond took the cup and sniffed it. The strong smell forced her head back and cleared her throat as it burned through her nostrils and down her throat. “What’s in it?” She asked while fighting to control her expression so as not to offend anyone. The smell only caught her off guard.
“Never asked, never cared.” She shrugged. The hype music had her swaying her hips and mouthing lyrics to the wrong part of the song. “Fair warning though, it’ll have you so fucked up you’ll be dining with Jesus himself.”
Diamond handed back the cup. “No thanks. I’m not tryna dine with a dead man in a place I’ve never been before with people I’m meeting for the first time. That’s a crime scene waiting to happen.”
“A sip won’t do much but have you light-headed and warm. Few more sips will have you lightly fucked up, but it’ll all wear off in a few hours or so. No pressure though.”
Kimi added the last part in case she was coming off too strong. Diamond didn’t feel like being light-headed for a few hours, but her curiosity got the best of her. She also didn’t want to turn down a drink with history behind it that Kimi willingly shared. It was an experience she wouldn’t have again.
She took the cup and did her best not to smell it while taking a sip bigger than expected. Its bitter taste burned down Diamond’s throat immediately upon contact, forcing her to cough like a mad woman. The alcohol left a strange sweet aftertaste.
“What the fuck?” Diamond heaved.
Kimi took the cup before anything spilled. “Yeah,” she chuckled while rubbing Diamond’s back, agreeing with her reaction. “It gets better after a few times.”
“I’m barely surviving my first time.”
“You’re doing better than most.”
Diamond decided then to stick with her seagrams especially when her environment started tilting. She grabbed onto Kimi’s arm to level herself. She knew what she was getting herself into but didn’t expect one sip to affect her like this. More like she didn’t believe Kimi, which she described as a potion.
Kimi was looking over Diamond’s shoulder when she squealed right into her ear. “Speak of the Devil, there goes little Seth.”
She waved behind Diamond and she turned to see an attractive guy heading toward their direction from what she could make out through her tilting environment. He appeared tall from the distance growing shorter and was one of the few who wore a shirt. A plain sleeveless gray shirt that hung at the side and showcased his tribal tattoo, as well as his well-built figure. Not big and bulky like the rest of the men, neither was he lanky and thin. His curly long hair was tied messily back with loose strands shaping his youthful face, and his russet-colored skin glowed beneath the moonlight.
He was cute. The outline of him was cute.
It didn’t hit Diamond that she was staring him down, unable to look away when their eyes met. Like some weird mystical force refusing her to look elsewhere until she forcefully ripped away her gaze—way too fast that she gripped Kimi’s arm tighter to steady herself from falling over. Fuck this drink was strong.
Kimi didn’t mind being used as a rest stop since it was her drink she offered. She assured Diamond she was okay and her symptoms were normal, but if something didn’t feel right to alert her immediately. She felt fine for now.
But when glancing back at the guy, supposedly Seth, chills scorned her arms because he looked at Diamond, as if she was the only woman to exist in his world. His surroundings weren’t of his concern.
She looked away again.
Kimi stepped forward when he was within feet. “Seth, you alright? Jacob told me you weren’t feeling—” She was pushed passed and Diamond knew he was standing directly in front of her.
“Um…” She stepped back, unsure what this man wanted and why he stopped directly in front of her when his cousin called for him. “Hi? Can I help you?”
A firm arm slid around Diamond’s back, his hand cupping her chin, brushing his thumb along her glossy lips. Diamond flinched at his heated touch, nearly feverish. He lifted her face to meet his strucken gaze displaying a range of emotions. “You’re so beautiful,” he whispered, taking in every detail of her face. “I love you already.”
Diamond opened her mouth to protest but was fed her words when the stranger leaned forward to capture her lips. Her pulse quickened when he took a chance to deepen the kiss further when her lips parted in shock. The kiss didn’t have a consistent rhythm. In truth, it was sloppy, possibly due to Diamond struggling to participate against an eager kisser taking everything for himself. Though she wasn’t one to speak.
This was her first official kiss. Minus kissing games back in freshman year in high school that were quick and short due to shyness and not having enough players.
And this stranger stole it.
Diamond quickly came to her senses and lifted both her hands—one filled with the bags of chips—and pushed at his broad chest. He was much stronger than he looked, it was like pushing at a rock. He immediately tore himself off once deciphering her attempt.
“What the fuck is your problem?” There was not one inch of guilt on his face and it pissed her off.
So she slapped him.
Hard.
Chapter 2: First Impressions Are Never The Best
Notes:
— some characters might sound ooc, some barely had talking scenes in the movies—which most this fic is based off of— but oh well. These are my fun interpretations and inspired interpretations from other fics I’ve read and imagination.

Chapter Two | First Impressions Are Never The Best
𝘓𝘢 𝘗𝘶𝘴𝘩, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 9, 2024
𝗦𝗘𝗧𝗛 𝗚𝗥𝗜𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗗 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗘𝗞 burning her handprint through his skin that felt more like a pinch, but it was nothing compared to finally imprinting after years of being stuck as the third wheel and constantly teased he would die alone without his other half.
And he was convinced of this faith bestowed upon his pack. He had met every girl within the reservation to Forks and still, nothing. No one caught his attention. No one had his heart jumping and his lungs deprived of oxygen as she took up space in his head—his world consumed and completed by a missing puzzle piece, just as intense as every member who’ve imprinted have said it was.
Seth had gone on many double dates Embry would set up, and he’d tag along given he had nothing better to do and hoped one of his dates was the woman he was desperately searching for. Plus Embry knew Seth wouldn’t decline as everyone else had. His good heart refused him too. But no more did he have to wait for his imprint.
For her.
And fuck, she’s so beautiful.
Eyes brown like the two moonless nights with honey swirls. Lips perfectly round, soft, and warm like a fresh batch of cookies with lingers of alcohol and barbeque chips. Dark brown skin untouched by blemishes and her scent was like a drug. Chills scorned along his body and pumped blood throughout his system, tightening the space within his shorts. Everything about this woman excited Seth. There were no words in his vocabulary to describe her beauty other than a masterpiece.
He knew this pit in his stomach wasn’t some unheard-of sickness, but his wolf leading Seth to her. His imprint. Who was now in pain because of him.
As soon as she made contact with his face, she yanked back her hand with a painful yelp. Whatever was in her hands slipped as she grabbed her tingling palm for comfort, somehow tripping over herself. Seth was quick to grab her flailing arm, pulling her toward him so she could balance herself, but he was pushed off which sent her falling back to the sand.
Seth attempted to reach for her again to help her up. He was desperate to touch any part of her to prove this wasn’t a dream and this woman was, in fact, real. His . But just as he was mere seconds from taking her hand—a hand gripped his shoulder and yanked him back with such strength only reserved for another supernatural species, or his pack mate and cousin, Kimi.
“Dude, what the fuck is your problem? We go around kissing people now?” She defended his imprint, sizing him like he’d lost his mind. And perhaps he had but for all the right reasons.
“Let me go.”
It returned when Seth successfully shrugged off her grip, further distancing him from his imprint still struggling off the ground. This frustrated Seth and his wolf very much that an inhuman growl rumbled from his chest. Confusion struck across Kimi’s face. She followed his gaze toward her friend, back to him, to her, then back to him again.
Kimi removed her hand immediately with a gasp, “Oh my god.” Then even louder, in a higher tone, almost a squeal, “oh my god! Seth, is this for real? Is this actually happening?” Her eyes lit up with excitement upon figuring out Seth had imprinted. She didn’t need to see in his mind to know when it was obvious.
It always was.
He gave a sheepish shrug while pushing back his thick hair, failing to bite back his radiate smile. “I think so.”
But that wasn’t all; his skin felt tingly, his stomach bloated with butterflies, and he was sure his heart would explode by how fast it pounded.
Kimi squealed in his ear, playfully punching his shoulder.
“Alright, alright. If you don’t mind,” Seth gestured toward the obvious, still needing help. Kimi apologized and allowed him to do his thing.
“Stop,” the woman stopped Seth from helping her to her feet, and like an obedient dog, he listened. “I need a moment. The world’s spinning and it won’t stop.”
She remained on her knees, sinking her face into her palms with a groan. Her pitch-black braids curled at the ends fell over her shoulders despite it tied back from her face. Seth couldn’t tell if she was tipsy, drunk, or sober enough. Her breath reeked of alcohol, especially their sacred specialty. He followed the scent to the red cup in Kimi’s hand.
As if she knew he was conducting a short-lived investigation, she lifted her hands with defeat. “Hey, don’t huff and puff at me. It was her choice! She’s a grown-ass woman able to make her own decisions. Take it up with her, not me.”
Seth couldn’t argue with that. He could never be against one’s choice, especially his imprint. Who was he to dictate that? She didn’t look any older than in her early twenties, still a grown woman able to make her own decisions.
“How much did she have?” Seth asked, carefully surveying his imprint.
“Just a sip, I swear. A big one though.”
Just a sip of that shit was enough to have any person brave enough like this. Kimi grew accustomed to the drink that she didn’t have a bigger effect. This worried Seth very much, but stopped every part of his being from hovering over her just as she said not to do.
He felt useless and didn’t know how to help her properly.
“Diamond,” Renesmee knelt beside his imprint in a flash and helped her to her feet. “Are you okay? What happened?”
Diamond? Is that her name?
Seth’s imprint, Diamond, gave a weak nod. “Yeah, I’m good. Would've been better had this guy not assaulted me!” She gestured a firm hand toward Seth as she wiped her mouth with the sleeve of her black jacket, wiping off her gloss too.
Kimi pointed at Seth and laughed. It was the funniest moment for her.
But not so much for Seth whose heart crumbled at such accusations. “What? I didn’t assault you, I—“
“You kissed me unprovoked!”
“It wasn’t—it’s not like that, I swear. I didn’t…I wouldn’t…” Seth trailed once putting everything together. Technically he did assault Diamond. No matter the context, he kissed her unprovoked which classified as sexual assault.
This was not a good look for him. Not the first oppression he imagined. It’s possible he could be loving her from jail if she reported the incident, which Seth very much wished to dissuade.
He dipped his head with guilt, nervously licking his lips. “I’m sorry. I got too excited and I wasn’t thinking straight.”
“You weren’t thinking? All the space in the world and you still came up to me? Are you drunk?” Diamond questioned with a scoff, to which his head dipped even further, almost like a puppy getting caught mutilating their owner's shoes.
He wasn’t drunk but wished he was even though he felt like it. It would’ve been easy to excuse. “Please don’t hate me.” Seth practically begged.
Diamond’s glare stung. Her walking away stung even more, though her heavenly scent blessed his nose. He could bathe in it if it was possible. But Seth refused to allow her to leave without explaining himself. It’s the least he could do to prove he wasn’t a fucking weirdo—that he was more than that and she meant more to him. It also fucking hurts. Not his pride, but his feelings and his wolf.
He didn’t like being hated.
He never had been the hated one in his family, in his pack, within the reservation, even amongst the vampires. Seth was well-liked. All he had to do was flash his big goofy smile to brighten someone’s day, but it didn’t seem to extend toward his imprint, and he wasn’t used to that.
“Look, I’m really, really sorry. Could you at least hear me out?” Seth apologized again with as much sincerity left in him. He hoped she would stop to hear him out but didn’t so he grabbed her arm without thinking. “Wait—”
Diamond flung him off. “Don’t fucking touch me. In fact, don’t come near me ever again. Just stay the fuck away. You’ve done enough.”
Her words stung. It felt like getting run over thirty times and left for dead. And the worst part about it, Seth was too good of a person to disobey her wish even if his wolf begged him to follow after her. To be near her. To smell her. To touch her— fuck! Even his thoughts were perverted.
He ran a stressful hand over his face, pushing back his long thick hair with a deep breath in hopes of getting control of himself. He couldn’t afford to piss her off. Or allow his emotions to get the better of him that he ends up regretting his actions later. His emotions were at an all-time high. Her name was singing in his head and could already picture their future together.
At least Seth was able to watch Diamond walk away. He admired her athletic figure outlined with the black bathing suit he once saw on Kimi. Her braids swayed mid-length and her entire backside was covered in sand. He’d chuckle at the view if he didn’t feel terrible about offending his imprint and ruining any possible future of them together.
He’d go after her if he dared but felt it was best to give her space. This was usually easier watching on the sidelines. His pack mates with their imprints, they made it look easy. Everything came easy to them. But now that it was his turn…it was nowhere near damn easy.
Jacob clasped a hand on Seth’s shoulder with a chuckle. “She doesn’t hate you. At least, not for long.”
Seth rolled his eyes. He didn’t like his Alpha joking about his situation, but it was better him than directly about Diamond. It also wasn’t anything new with their relationship because he’d done the same to him on multiple occasions.
“Not helpful, Jacob.” Renesmee muttered and he gave a shrug. She touched Seth lightly with a comforting smile, though his eyes never left Diamond. “It’s nothing personal; she just doesn’t know how amazing you are. It’s only the first day. In time, she will know so don’t worry too much.”
“But I am worried. All I feel is worry and there’s nothing I can do about it since she doesn’t want me anywhere near her.” Seth finally took his eyes off Diamond, meeting Renesmee’s gentle gaze that was free of judgment. “I’m worried I fucked up for good. I’m worried something might happen to her. What if someone kidnaps her? What if a blood-crazed vampire trespasses and sucks her dry? What if—”
“How about I go after Diamond to make sure she’s okay in your place? Hopefully, it’ll kill any crazed delusions you keep conjuring. Would that help?”
“Not really, but it’s something.”
“Seth, Diamond’s my friend. And roommate…and I guess technically family. She’s safe with me.” Renesemee assured.
“I’ll come with!” Kimi volunteered.
Seth hated it wasn’t him going after Diamond, but he trusted Renesmee and sometimes his cousin. Diamond would be safe with them. It was better them than him since he was sure he would do something stupid like kiss her again.
“Okay,” Seth finally agreed. “Thank you.”
“Of course. I knew your time would come and I’m happy it’s Diamond. She’s the sweetest when you get to know her,” which Seth planned on doing, getting to know everything about her. “Congrats though.”
“Yeah, congrats on finding your imprint. It took you long enough.” Kimi chuckled into another sip of her cup, emptying the remains. “Hopefully she’s too dizzy to remember your face, then technically, you can start all over and not do what you just did.”
They were both running away to catch up with Diamond before Seth could respond. It was then he noticed his pack mates running in his direction with big smiles on their faces, hitting his shoulder with aching strength and combating him with their congratulations. All but Leah who went home after her run to her imprint.
“You went right in for it,” said Quil, his unruly curly hair still having a mind of its own. “Seeing it unfold was something straight out of them rom-coms Claire forces me to watch. There’s literal goosebumps along my arms.” He extended his arm to showcase tiny bumps.
Seth’s cheeks warmed with embarrassment as he started second-guessing everything. “Did I come in too hot? Was it too much?”
“She walked away didn’t she?” Paul chuckled.
They all laughed at him. Laughter that diminished bits of his confidence, and as he played back the scenario, the more he cringed. He palmed his face and groaned out.
I should’ve gone about this differently, he told himself.
Embry’s voice picked up in the mixture of mockery and laughter, “you just couldn’t wait could you? I don’t blame you. That’s a woman right there—a whole lotta woman you’ve never dealt with. You sure you can handle that?”
The crease between Seth’s brows deepened when he perked from his hands. “What do you mean? O-of course I can handle her. Why wouldn’t I? Aren’t we not made to be?” He defended, possibly missing his point.
This confused him very much. The whole point of the imprint was to reconnect the other half of another, the missing piece to a puzzle. While everyone had their own theories as to why imprinting had its purpose, Seth strongly believed it was a means to finding his soulmate. A nearly perfect match that brought together two lonely souls that desperately needed each other to sparkle in different ways that unified their connection.
Diamond wasn’t a conquest able to bear Seth healthy strong wolves or an insurance to pass along the gene—she was a woman Seth wanted to cherish and love, both the good and bad. He couldn’t wait to express that part of himself. It was also why he failed to understand what Embry meant.
If Diamond was a challenge, it was one he welcomed with open arms.
Embry shook his head with a hum. “You have much to learn, Seth. A fine ass woman like—”
A growl rumbled from Seth’s chest. Something he never had done before which caught everyone by surprise. It didn’t sit well that someone he knew and respected would compliment his imprint in ways that were obviously presented and needed no words to explain.
Embry lifted his hands with mocked fear. “Oooh jealous Seth finally comes out to play. This isn’t the Seth I’m used to. I like it.”
“The puppy is no more. The big dog has come to play.” Paul teased, giving everyone another opportunity to laugh at him. All but Jacob who came to his aid, though it’s obvious by the smile on his face the situation humored him.
“Alright, leave him alone. You know the law; imprints are off-limits. That includes unwanted comments about one’s imprint you yourself wouldn’t want another describing yours—that is when you imprint.”
Embry didn’t take offense to this. He was well-versed with women that if he didn’t imprint he would never be alone. His charms and natural charisma did the job for him. Pretty sure he invited two women just to fool around behind their backs. “All I’m saying is that there is no way in hell Seth can handle a woman. You have the body of a man but the face of a baby with the mindset of a boy. You don’t even have your shit together and play games all day. How are you going to take care of your imprint when you barely can take care of yourself?”
“I’m not a baby.” Seth defended, yet couldn’t help the pout in his tone that proved otherwise.
“You’re still the youngest in the pack.” Quil pointed out.
He wasn’t. There were many new young shapeshifters after the mess with Renesmee and the Volturi caused and all the foreign vampires that was brought to their land, but the pack would always consider Seth the youngest. Even younger than the actual youngest.
“Yeah, but that doesn’t make me incapable of requiring the skills needed to get my shit together. I got a job at Sam’s auto shop, enough savings for emergencies, decent credit, a car, and I take online classes. I can take care of my imprint!” Seth clenched his fist, his chest puffing with burning rage. He must get his wolf in control or he might accidentally phase and expose their existence, but he desperately wanted to beat the shit out of Embry—out of all of them for doubting him in a moment where their support was most needed. “You don’t even know her—none of you do. You don’t know what she needs.”
“Apparently you don’t either cause she walked away.” Embry muttered under his breath, which everyone including Seth heard.
That was the last straw.
But before Seth could do anything, Jacob quickly stepped between the two with his hand firm against Seth’s chest. “Alright, alright, fuck off Embry. All of you back off and give us some space.” And that they did because it wasn’t an order from a friend or family, but an order from their Alpha. Aside from Paul who was still part of Sam’s pack and second-in-line. Then he turned to Seth and motioned his head. “Come on. Let’s cool you down before show yourself and expose our ass.”
He had to pull at Seth’s arm to keep him from growling at Embry who finally decided to back off. The two had a playful relationship, but there were times when Embry would go so far that it was no longer fun. It’s no secret the pack viewed Seth as the baby—which that he was, and was the youngest to ever phase—but he no longer wanted that title lingering around until death. Not when he has something to prove and someone to improve for.
Jacob planted Seth down into a beach chair that was wet from the previous owner and handed him an ice-cold water bottle to cool himself down since he declined his offer of beer. Not that Seth wasn’t much of a drinker, which was true, but he already felt drunk off his imprint. He’d been weak in the knees since the second he met those honey-brown eyes, struggling to gain control of his consciousness that wished nothing more than to kiss Diamond again.
His tongue glided along his pink lips where the stickiness of Diamond’s gloss stained. Reminiscing the warmth of those soft lips burned his face a deep red color, a taste he yearned for so badly it ached. Truth be told, it was Seth’s first kiss. He hoped that part wasn’t obvious, not that he remembered much of how it went down given one moment he was in the parking lot, then was slapped within seconds.
He should’ve gone about it differently. Approached her differently. Kissed her differently. Fuck—now that the high was settling with each cold sip, it just might’ve been the worst kiss on the planet.
Good thing Seth’s pride wasn’t a factor; he was willing to learn how to better himself to please Diamond. He’s always been a people-pleaser, that was no secret too. At least this time it wouldn’t be taken advantage of. He refused Embry’s words to get to him.
“Ignore Embry. He’s just being a fucking pain in the ass, purposely riling you up since it’s easy to do now that you’re an imprinted wolf. Likely jealous the youngest in the pack imprinted before him.” Jacob popped open a cold beer and sipped the majority of it in one sip. “Don’t let him tell you any differently; you’ll know what your imprint needs. It’s in our nature to learn and adjust.”
Seth honestly didn’t wish to waste another breath speaking on Embry. He didn’t matter when Diamond existed. “You must know of Diamond since Nes is close with her? What do you know? Where has she been my entire life?”
The cool water quenched his thirst and calmed any lingering anger that was present before.
“She’s Nes’ roommate from Florida who runs track for U.W, alongside Kimi and Tayen. I’ve been to a few of her meets in support with Nes and she’s crazy talented. No doubt we’ll one day see her competing in the Olympics.”
Seth felt a sense of pride through Diamond’s accomplishments. Sports wasn’t the path he desired since he could easily dominate in it, but could as quickly get banned because of the unspoken rage that came with being a competitive shapeshifter. He didn’t know how Kimi did it being that she was also a part of the pack, but he couldn’t wait to support Diamond’s journey to the big screens. A gold medal would look good in their future house, displayed as soon as they entered.
…but that excitement started to dial down when realizing she attended the University of Washington located in Seattle. Nearly four hours away from the reservation. His entire life.
This was a decision he needed to think about within his space and decided to stick to the main conversation. “What else?” Seth inquired.
“I could tell you every little detail spoken—”
“Good. Because I want to hear all of it.”
“—but Nes would kill me for exposing her like that and some things aren’t for me to say.” Said Jacob and Seth quickly understood his point, but he desperately needed to know everything about his imprint. It was in his right to know. Plus it wouldn’t matter much when they shared minds while phasing. “Speaking from personal experiences, it’s best you learn about your imprint from her. Not by the words of others—but from her mouth and what she chooses you to know about her. Besides, Nes’ information has done enough.”
“What do you mean?”
“Alice.”
Seth nodded. “Of course.”
“According to Nes, it almost didn’t happen tonight as planned because Diamond changed her mind last minute about coming out. But she was determined to set the future back on course when Alice called about the decision change and made her come. If she hadn’t, you wouldn’t have imprinted. At least not for another while longer. I’m sure Nes would’ve found a way to force you both in the same room.”
Seth knew of Alice’s abilities but never the extent of how far out into the future she could see, but thought it was one of the coolest abilities on earth. All of the Cullen’s abilities were out of this world. There were times Seth wished he obtained unique gifts beyond what he already was, but he wouldn’t change a thing even if the opportunity presented itself.
Becoming a werewolf was the best thing to happen in his life despite the circumstances and loved the good and bad that came with it. It was part of his identity and his culture. Without it, imprinting was impossible. He then wouldn’t have ever met Diamond.
He was thankful to his closest friend and technically his niece through the marriage between Charlie and his mother, Renesmee, for making this possible. And to Alice for caring enough to look into his future. This day by far topped the best day in his life.
“Nes has a good heart. She’s always looking out for me.” Seth said with a warm smile and Jacob nodded in agreement.
“You have a good heart too. You deserve a life outside of this pack and someone to take all of your attention so you’re not on my ass about Alpha duties.”
Seth drew back in defeat. “Hey now! I care about this pack as much as you do.”
“I know you do. I appreciate it more than you know, and you better not ever make me admit that shit again 'cause I’ll deny it forever until my grave.” Jacob stood from his seat with a long stretch. “Congratulations though. If Diamond deserves anyone it should be you and you, her too. At least you didn’t imprint on a filthy blood-sucker. Fuck knows we got enough of them running around thinking they own the place.”
“Your imprint is one. Well, half one.” Seth corrected when earning a look from Jacob.
“She’s different. She’s my blood-sucker.”
Seth scrunched his nose at his hypocrisy, pushing back his curly thick hair that’s grown a few more inches over the months. Such demeaning words to describe vampires weren’t housed in his vocabulary but the pack had various creative ways to name them.
Jacob left after a while to enjoy the festivities and deal with Alpha duties to catch up with Renesmee. Seth stood back to finish his water and enjoy the salty breeze, hopefully giving his imprint enough time to settle her emotions.
But he missed her already.
Diamond consumed every inch of his mind that Seth could die happily knowing her face was on his mind last. He allowed nature to take over and tracked her scent to one of the blue tents scattered along the beach, behind the posted sign so many wouldn’t wake up in water, being swept out in the ocean.
He lingered nearby like a weirdo, unsure how to approach the tent. Or if it was even appropriate after what he had done. Inside, Kimi, Tayen, and Renesmee’s voices were identified. The four were laughing about a previous conversation before Seth arrived, and he relaxed at Diamond’s uncontrollable laughter.
She’s okay.
Renesmee wasn’t surprised to find Seth lingering around as she exited the tent, still warm with laughter. She motioned her head and he followed behind without a word.
“Is she alright?” Seth asked when out of earshot from the tent. Diamond’s laughter was a good indicator, but he needed to be sure.
“You spooked her but she’s fine. She’s more focused on stopping the world from spinning than the fact you stole her first kiss.”
He stopped dead in his tracks and his eyes widened with shock. “ F-first kiss? ” Seth exclaimed and Renesmee threw her hand to her mouth with a gasp.
“Oh my god! I wasn’t supposed to say that—or anything at all. Just pretend you didn’t hear what I said. We’re just going on a small walk with no mentions of what I didn’t say.”
“I can’t just unhear that, Nes! It’s literally embedded into my brain!” Seth threw back his head with a groan, dragging a hand over his face. “Fuuck. If she didn’t hate me before, she definitely does now.”
What should’ve been a special moment was classified as sexual assault, ruined because he couldn’t keep his wolf in check. There was no backing out of this or erasing the memory. He would forever be known as the weirdo who stole her first kiss.
“Hate is a stretch.” She attempted to twist the narrative. “She just doesn’t know you yet.”
“You can hate someone you don’t know.” Seth pointed out with panic. “W-what am I going to do? What can I do? How can I make this better so she doesn’t think I'm a creep? Or someone who ruined a special moment?”
Renesmee saw her friend was out of luck with getting on his imprint’s good side and knew if anyone had the answers it was her. After all, they were roommates. They’re with each other almost every single day, if not, all night.
“How about some food?” Renesmee suddenly offered.
“Oh, no, I’m not hungry right now.” Seth turned down the offer. “I am, but I can’t eat without settling this matter first. It’s eating me alive. No pun intended.”
She slapped Seth’s shoulder with strength that nearly made him lose his balance. “Not you, silly—Diamond. I was just on my way to make her a plate since she’s hungry for actual food rather than chips or whatever leftovers she brought, but you’re here now! You can offer it as a peace offering.”
Seth was down with the idea and was already heading toward the grills to do his duty as Diamond’s wolf by taking care of her. “I can do it! I’ll pack every inch of the plate with everything she likes.”
Renesmee pumped her fist with support. “That’s the spirit!”
With the plate in hand, staring down at containers of various foods, Seth realized something. “…what does she like? Is she picky? A vegan? On a diet, needing to hit a certain calorie intake a day? Is she a hotdog woman or hamburger? I should just pack it with fruits instead to be safe, right? But you said real food and fruits aren’t enough to satisfy hunger. Let’s take this to the top.”
“You’re seriously overthinking this, Seth.” She teased but took the time to point out things she’d witnessed Diamond eating before.
Jacob didn’t have to deal with this. Renesmee consumed both food and blood. Though she preferred blood, she still needed bits of human food to sustain a proper diet. The two went hunting weekly and Bella and Esme kept her well-fed; she never needed to step in a kitchen, unlike Diamond who was human through and through. Someone who needed a good balance to maintain a healthy figure and energy as a track runner.
As he packed the plate with various foods—cheeseburger with extra pickles and ketchup, beans, fries, and more—Seth had more worries on his nonexistent plate. Like if the subject matter of the ‘imprint’ slipped into Diamond’s ear.
“Did you—”
“Of course not. That’s for you to tell her, not me, Kimi, Tayen, or anyone else.” Renesmee just knew what he was asking before it was asked. I guess I am pretty predictable.
Relief filled his system. He very much wanted to tell Diamond himself about the imprint. He wanted to be there at every step of the way to answer her questions and clear any confusion. He couldn’t wait to get this off his chest. “So I hear she attends U.W? Practically a track star in the making if not one already.”
“Yep, full ride and all.” She must’ve caught the contemplative look on Seth’s face which explained the nudge to his shoulder. His smile was small and wary and somewhat forced. “I know that face—Jacob had the same look when it was time to leave forks before people got suspicious, and I decided to attend college. He had to make a difficult decision as Alpha to stay with me while compromising his duty to his pack. You want to follow her to Seattle?”
Seth adjusted the bun sliding off the burger and made room for more beans as Renesmee suggested. It seemed his imprint loved baked beans and lots of ketchup.“I have no choice but to. I physically can’t be apart from Diamond and neither can she once she starts noticing. It hurts now, imagine what a four-hour distance would do. I mean, there’s no way in hell I would ask her to drop everything to stay here with me, not when her life and career are set in Seattle. There’s nothing for her here.”
“I can talk to my dad about helping you transfer,” she offered without hesitation while retying her cover-up that loosened from a gust of wind. “He’d be more than happy to sponsor your studies if money’s a problem. He adores you already and tolerates you out of most wolves, not to mention we’re family. He’ll do it. My mom will make him.”
“I’ll consider it. Thanks.”
Seth could use the help. Part-time at Sam’s auto shop paid enough to take care of small bills and eat, but not enough to survive in the big city. Not even Quileute Nation benefits would cover half of it aside from maybe tuition and aid here and there.
But this was more than that. This was the biggest decision in his life; a decision that placed him in the position of leaving behind his home, his family, his life, and his duties to the pack. Everything for a moment he anticipated the second he was born.
He needed to talk to Leah.
But first, he needed to feed his imprint. Diamond was his first priority.
Once the plate was fixed and perfectly balanced with proteins, veggies, and fruits—Seth delivered the meal to Diamond. Renesmee stood aside for support but was out of frame. His palms were sweating from how nervous but so excited he was to see her again. He was sure his shaking leg was mimicking his invisible wagging tail, faster when Diamond came out of the tent. Only partially because the cool breeze caught her off guard.
Her smile faltered at Seth’s presence, replaced with a thin line. “What do you want?”
She remembered him. Great. She didn’t smell in distress as opposed to earlier which was a start, but she wasn’t exactly relaxed either.
“F-for you,” Seth offered the plate of food as a peace offering. He might’ve gotten too carried away and packed more than she could handle, but she didn’t seem to oppose. Even as her expression remained cold and offended, her stomach stated otherwise.
Seth couldn’t help thinking how pretty she looked even while glaring daggers at him. All boosted with energy that her attention was on him, and he was near her again. Her presence calmed him and his wolf. Not to mention the raging boner threatening to expose his physical desire for her.
“Did you do something to the food?” Diamond eyed the plate with skepticism, hiding further behind the tent’s entrance with a shiver. She wouldn’t have to be cold if she accepted him and invited him inside to snuggle.
Seth’s brows furrowed in confusion at the assumption, angling himself in a not so awkward position. “Aside from adding extra pickles, ketchup, and more baked beans…no?”
“What is this then? Where’s my friend? The one who was supposed to be fixing this? I was clear with my words and meant it.”
“Umm…” Seth’s gaze shot to Renesmee who frantically shook her head not to look her way or mention her. “Nes had to, um…” He had to think of something quick. “Help with something. I know her—we’re good friends. Family actually, I’m her uncle through marriage though we don’t really do the label thing. At least out loud we don’t, but we grew up together. B-but anyway, I wanted to apologize for my behavior earlier. It was uncalled for and I swear I’m not like that—never ever been like that and would never do something like that ever again.”
She hummed.
A nervous smile stretched across his face, hoping to win her over if the food was least appealing. Seth could tell she was contemplating her options, but ultimately, listened to her hunger and snatched the plate from his hand. The tent zipped back up before he could tell her to enjoy the meal.
Renesmee offered a thumbs up.
With his hand clenched tight, Seth pumped the air with a silent praise and a tiny jump. The tension between them was the least of his concerns when she accepted his peace offering in the end. That was a start. A better interaction than how he imagined it would be.
He succeeded in his first duty to her. Now he could ponder his decisions and thoroughly plan out his next step.

Chapter Three | Without A Doubt, I’m Doubtful
𝘓𝘢 𝘗𝘶𝘴𝘩, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 9, 2024
𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗗𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 Seth needed to carefully plan out before dropping everything for Seattle by sunrise, as the little voice in his head kept pushing him to do. This was his first official responsibility that was bigger than the pack, one that adultized him more than the little boy everyone perceived him as.
He knew there was much to improve and was willing to do that and more, but not with this weighing heavily on his mind.
Leah was spotted outside their childhood home dragging packed luggages to the trunk of her car as Seth arrived home. The house now belonged to her after their mother moved in with Charlie soon after their engagement. They both agreed not to go all out for the wedding and wanted to keep it small despite their guest list exceeding their expectations. The ceremony was held in Charlie’s backyard. Filled with vampires and shifters forcing themselves to get along for one night.
Though Seth had a room at Charlie’s and have crashed there a few times, he chose to stay at his childhood home. It was closer to the pack and most familiar.
Seth rushed to grab the other two suitcases on the porch and handed them off. “Thanks,” Leah took them with ease without breaking a sweat and placed them carefully on top of each other in the back seat. By the looks of them stuffed like burritos, it would’ve been heavy for the average human though it was nothing for either of them.
“Going somewhere?” Seth asked the obvious, but her leaving wasn’t discussed prior like usual.
“Oh, yeah. Simone’s going on a business trip to Thailand and I’m her plus one. It was originally a week-long affair, but we added an extra week to do our own thing with Valentine's Day around the corner.” She closed the door behind her, standing like a child who’d been caught with her hands shoved deep in her sweat pockets. “I didn’t get the chance to tell you since it was super last minute on my end. At least you got here before we left so I can tell you now.”
It was no surprise Leah would follow her imprint and wife, Simone, around the world. Whenever they’re countries away due to the demands of Simone’s job, Seth was forced to endure Leah’s snappy mood swings and late-night sappy moments wishing their distance was closer.
Simone worked as a marketing consultant. Her office was based in Seattle but was able to work from home the majority of the time. She had been talking about this project for a while about some collaboration overseas to bring their products into the US market, and often stayed up late running off days-old coffee perfecting her appeal. Seth believed in her though. Her talent, determination, and endless creativity was something he admired and wouldn’t replace her with anyone else.
“You’ll be okay by yourself though, right? You don’t need me to pick up some night lights or call every night to be sure there’s no monsters in the house like old times?” Leah teased her brother with ancient memories from when he was ten and was afraid of the dark since watching that one scary zombie movie their dad told him not to watch. It was all everyone would talk about around the time and he felt excluded from their conversations and watched it anyway. Big mistake.
Fear of the dark lasted for another two years until he learned to face the fear himself. The movie was a core memory and would forever hold up space in his head.
“Ha ha. Very funny.” Seth shrugged off her hand that patted his shoulder. “I’ll be fine just like always. It’s you who’ll need me to call every night.”
“Just to check in and make sure the house isn’t on fire.” She admitted with humor on her tongue, though she was very much serious.
“I’m an adult. I can look after myself. No need for unnecessary daily check-ins.” Seth bit back which Leah didn’t seem to mind and playfully elbowed his chest to lighten the mood.
“You’ll always be my responsibility no matter your age. Besides, no one protects you better than me.”
Though it was true and Leah would forever be his protector, Seth didn’t come here for that. He grew anxious the longer he prolonged the conversation, and even debated whether he should wait until after they returned from Thailand or never bring it up. It wouldn’t be fair on them. Leah would kill him, plus he needed her guidance.
The second he gained enough courage to speak out, Leah turned her back to him. She noticed one of the bag strings was sticking out from the back car door. Sweat gathered in Seth’s palms and his eyes squeezed shut as he fought again to talk himself out of backing out.
Just do it, Seth. Just get it over and done with.
“I imprinted.” Seth blurted with his eyes still shut.
He peeked open an eye when silence filled the void. Leah immediately stopped what she was doing and spun back around with her eyes nearly bulging out the sockets. She appeared more confused than surprised, studying Seth as if trying to figure out if he was bullshitting her or not.
“Oh,” it didn’t sound as exciting as Seth expected. “Oh, wow, you’re not lying. When was this?”
“Not too long ago. Maybe twenty or forty minutes ago, but it feels like seconds.”
“Oh.”
Seth went on to introduce the little information he knew about Diamond, including the fact she lived in Seattle and attended U.W. The crease between her brows deepened as more information was revealed about his imprint, further confirming the truth of this blessing she seemed hesitant about.
“Oh,” she said again while crossing her arms with no care for wrinkling her white V-neck t-shirt.
Seth kissed his teeth with annoyance. “Can you say anything other than ‘oh’? There’s already a lot on my mind and you’re just adding to it. If you’re not happy for me, at least pretend to be.”
“O-of course, I am. I’m over the moon happy for you. It’s just—” Leah shook away her thoughts and threw her arms around his body, pulling him into a hug that best expressed her current emotions. “Wow. I knew this moment would come eventually, but I never thought it would be now. My little brother, an imprinted wolf. Sucks you won’t depend on me anymore now there’s someone else depending on you.”
“I’ll always be Seth.” He hugged her tighter. “Your brother. Your responsibility. I’ll always need you. That never changes no matter what.”
Seth understood the burden Leah was forced to carry after their dad died. Having to pick everyone up while also struggling to piece herself together was far too much for her to handle. And on top of that, dealt with a horrible heartbreak that left its stamp on the pack. The guilt each of them carried, especially Leah, made her overly protective of Seth and their mom. She promised never to lose anyone dear to her again.
It was also the perfect distraction when her ex-fiancé and alpha of the Uley pack, Sam, imprinted on their cousin Emily.
It took a toll on Leah’s mental health. Everything within the reservation even down to the mind-link was a trigger—constant vivid displays of their puppy love, their constant suffocating presence, and endless apologies. There was only so much a strong woman like Leah could take until she had enough. Until she was willing to risk her safety as a lone wolf and left the reservation to live with a friend in L.A.
Nearly radio silent until the wedding and arrived with Simone, her wife. The second recorded imprint between the same sex and the quickest marriage amongst the pack. The first same-sex imprint was Quil’s great-grandfathers. Anything beyond them hadn’t been passed down or simply forgotten.
Leah hinted before—whenever she remembered she had a phone and very worried family members who needed to hear from her to know that she was alive—that she met someone new but never explicitly stated she’d imprinted. It’s possible she couldn’t believe it either like it was too good to be true. She probably thought something was wrong with her for imprinting on a woman rather than a man, though she’d always been open to both ideas if it worked out.
She loved telling the story of how it happened. She was heading back to her tiny shared apartment after a long shift where a drunk woman entered the same elevator as her. She wore a black long-sleeved sequin dress with a birthday stash dangling off her shoulders. Her naturally thick hair curling at the roots after long hours spent straightening it. She was a stumbling mess still singing her heart out. Leah thought Simone was noisy but cute…until she threw up on her.
But the second she met those big brown eyes, she just knew she would never leave her side.
Simone accepted the imprint the second Leah brought it up. She had no fear of wolves because her grandmother spoke of the legends within her own tribe. Her father’s side of the family, who were loudly and proudly Black, were deeply involved in Christianity and didn’t believe in folklore and immediately disputed such ideas. Her mother stayed true to her cultural roots and her father was open to them too, but never brought up stories regarding wolves because the gene wasn’t in their line. But Simone trusted her gut and her grandmother, and was ready to walk to the courthouse to get married.
Wasting time wasn’t something she did. Why wait when there’s no reason to? As she infamously said.
Leah pulled from the hug first. “So I’m assuming you’ll follow her to U.W?”
“Of course. There’s no other choice, but…”
Confusion caused the crease between her brows to deepen. “But what?”
“But I’m afraid to leave home. To leave behind all that I know to start over again.” Seth shamelessly admitted. Once he started, more doubt fed off him. “What if I’m doing all this for nothing? Adjusting my life to be with someone who’ll end up rejecting me?”
Leah stepped forward and rested her hand on his shoulder. “Don’t talk like that.”
“I’m being realistic. That’s what you taught me; to be realistic about my options because the world isn’t all peaches and cream.”
Her wide-set eyes narrowed slightly. “Don’t listen to me. I was being an asshole around the time because I was in a shitty mood.”
Which she was constantly in before meeting Simone.
“But you had a point.” Seth chewed his bottom lip as Embry’s words haunted him again. “Embry says I still have the mindset of a boy and a woman like Diamond wouldn’t go for that type of man. I’m starting to think he’s right.”
“Embry doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s a fucking idiot and you’re an even bigger idiot for believing him.” Leah said with supportive words that came out very harsh, though it was very true. “You’re so kind and thoughtful and loyal and filled with so much love to give—you’re literally the definition of a man written by a woman.”
“I have no idea what that means?”
“It means you’re perfect the way you are. Diamond will love you as you are, not who you’re trying to be from someone who’s gone through the entire reservation. She’s your imprint for a reason. Nobody else but yours.”
Seth leaned against the car with a sigh. “What should I do?”
“I think you know what to do. You just need someone to say it out loud, and I say you should follow your heart.” Leah joined his side, pushing back her short, sleek bob. Her tribal tattoo peeked from beneath her short-sleeved shirt, paired with grey sweats easily slipped on after phasing. “Seattle isn’t but four hours away, shorter if you run the distance. The reservation will always be here awaiting your return as well as home. It’s not going anywhere.”
“I’m scared. Like really scared. I don’t know if I’m ready as excited as I am about it.” Seth admitted, and Leah was forthcoming about this vulnerable moment he wanted to have with her.
“No one’s ever ready. There’s no straightforward guide to this, and it might get tougher as you follow along. I don’t want to lose my brother to someone I’ve never met, but I know the consequence of not following your gut.” She said. “I was scared shitless when I left the reservation but I’m happy that I did because I wouldn’t have met Simone. I wouldn’t be the woman I am today. She teaches me the world is bigger than home, and no matter where I make myself comfortable—home is home. My duty to the pack isn’t diminished because of it. Imprinting is a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. Don’t let your fear discourage you from your future. Besides, if Jacob, our alpha, manages the distance with so much shit on his shoulders, so can you.”
This was a lot to take in but Seth was happy he spoke with Leah. Her encouragement helped silence his fear and motivated him to press the gas pedal full force. More harm would come to this if he hesitated. Diamond didn’t deserve that.
Simone came rushing out the house with a last-minute bag she forgot to pack. Leah rushed to help and took the bag from her hands so she could hug Seth upon hearing he imprinted.
“You know I have an empty flat in Seattle that I rarely use unless I’m needed at the company for an extensive project. You’re more than welcome to live there.” Offered Simone, already typing in the address to send. She wore one of Leah’s shirts tucked in high-waisted jeans. Her silk press still going strong, wrapped underneath a silky scarf.
“I appreciate that. I definitely wasn’t looking forward to apartment hunting.” Or bothering Edward to look for him.
“You probably don’t even know where to start.” Leah teased and Seth didn’t take it to heart because she was telling the truth. He had no idea and was thankful Simone did.
Simone slapped Leah’s arm, to which she threw out her hands in defeat. Then sought forgiveness by wrapping an arm around her waist, pulling her closer where she molded perfectly. Likely using her heat to get warm. “It’s okay not knowing where to start. My first apartment was a room rented at my roommate's mom’s house who sat on the couch watching TV all day. I didn’t read the details thoroughly and was stuck there for a few months.” She said while fidgeting with Leah’s wedding band. Both were identical with each other’s initials carved on the inside. “Seattle moves fast compared to here. The city is chaotic and filled with impatient people who think the world revolves around them. Don’t let them walk over you. It’ll take some days getting used to the noise, maybe more with werewolf hearing, so I recommend noise-canceling headphones.”
“I second that or you’ll be dealing with a migraine for weeks.” Leah promoted the usage of noise-canceling headphones.
Seth made note of that and more advice Simone offered. It was his first time living in the city away from the peaceful setting the reservation offered. He needed every helpful tip to make this transition run smoothly.
He hugged his sisters one last time before they drove early to the airport so as not to miss their flight. He promised to keep them updated and when he’d reached the flat safely without a problem. Simone desperately wanted to meet Diamond before they left but there wasn’t any time and promised they would all grab a bite together when they returned.
On his way back to the beach, Seth called his mom to tell her the good news. She was surprisingly up, catching up on a rerun of her favorite show. He had to hold the phone away from all her screaming. Charlie busted through with his rifle, convinced intruders had broken in. Though he didn’t understand the concept in detail nor wished to, he was very happy for Seth too.
Many promises were made to bring Diamond home so his mother could cook her dinner and likely embarrass Seth with childhood stories and photos. Not something he looked forward to, already feeling his cheeks burn red at the thought. But if Diamond liked that kind of stuff and was interested in knowing more, he was willing to sacrifice his embarrassment.
Diamond seemed in a better mood than earlier. She was outside the tent building sandcastles with Kimi and Claire, who talked her ear off about all of her favorite movies and those actors’ upcoming projects. Diamond didn’t seem to mind her yapping and even added new movies to add to her watchlist.
Quil didn’t stray far as per usual, but at least he wasn’t hovering. He seemed pleased that Claire was socializing outside of him and didn’t dare interrupt their bonding.
Seth liked that Diamond was getting along with the other imprints. She has that aura about her that gravitated people toward her though she didn’t seem the type to meet them halfway given she stuck with those she knew unless they went up to introduce themselves. Like Seth, completely struck by her beautiful smile. So warm and forthcoming, it had him smiling as if she was smiling at him.
He quickly bit it back and hid himself before he freaked her out anymore tonight.
He remained her shadow from a distance the entire night. Aside from ensuring her safety in the safest place she could be, he craved to be within her presence as it still hadn’t processed completely that he imprinted. His wolf couldn’t wait to show how much he loved Diamond and couldn’t wait to be loved by her.
Diamond finally grew tired and decided to crash in the tent shared with Kimi and Tayen. Seth propped a beach pillow beneath his head after settling on the side of the tent, unable to leave Diamond alone. The cold didn’t faze him and passed the time scrolling through pictures of Simone’s apartment complex through the site.
His sharp hearing couldn’t help but overhear their conversation. Constant giggling and whispers of random phrases with little to no context. Things he couldn’t make sense of. Either they were drunk, texting each other, or that was their usual friendship dynamic.
Seth tried to stay up even as exhaustion hung heavy but failed and ultimately dozed off.

Chapter 4: Let’s Try This Again

Chapter Four | Let’s Try This Again
𝘓𝘢 𝘗𝘶𝘴𝘩, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 10, 2024
𝗦𝗘𝗧𝗛 𝗝𝗢𝗟𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗡𝗨𝗗𝗚𝗘𝗗 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗟𝗘𝗚, rocking his body back and forth with seasick motion. Confusion washed over him as his eyes opened, squinting against the morning sun nearly blinding him. A shadow stood tall over him, nudging him again.
“If you don’t want your imprint calling the sheriff on your ass stationed at our tent like some guard dog, I suggest you get up and move out the way. You’re blocking the pathway.”
His cousin, Kimi, was the one kicking and nudging at Seth to move him out the way. She threatened to kick him again when he didn’t move in a quick manner. Harder this time.
He sat up quickly with sand sticking to his brown skin and all throughout his long hair. “I’m up. I’m up. Chill.” He stretched his arms back with a yawn.
Pushing himself to his feet, Seth brushed the sand off his arms and legs while scanning the beach for the sheriff in case Diamond woke up before him and had already made the call. Memories of last night were hazy and didn’t remember dozing off. Nevertheless moving himself to sleep in front of their tent like a guard dog and blocked the entrance and exit, as Kimi stated.
It was the best sleep he had ever gotten in years despite the itchy sand. Would’ve been even better if he were physically near Diamond. He yearned to be.
He wondered if she slept well too. If she was comfortable, warm enough, and overall okay. It’s hard to confirm the facts if the tent was zipped up, but undefined calm breathing. She must be asleep still.
Kimi passed her cousin toward the coolers with an oversized t-shirt over her hot pink bathing suit. “She’s still asleep if that’s what you're wondering. Tayen will be with her during our early runs around the perimeter.” She assured as she pulled free an ice-cold water bottle and tossed another in Seth’s direction and downed half of it.
Seth thanked her and discovered another water bottle to place in front of the tent on a stool so it was easily spotted. He quickly learned that Diamond preferred room-temperature water if she wasn’t actively moving around and hoped that was the case when she woke up. Tayen hated room-temperature water and didn’t have to worry about her stealing it.
He’d even dusted her shoes clean of sand and placed it on the stool, looking for anything to get back on her good side and make her stay here comfortable. Once satisfied, he left with Kimi toward the forest.
“Yesterday was a shit show.” Kimi said while shaking her head of dark loose curls. “I suffered from second-hand embarrassment watching you fail with your imprint and I can’t allow you to do that shit again. Not around me. So consider me saving your life today as a win.”
Seth combed his free fingers through his thick hair trying to get out all the sand to lighten the process of washing his hair in the shower. “Has she said anything about me? Does she think I’m cute?” He ignored all that was mentioned. He needed to know what she thought of him to better navigate himself around her.
“She hasn’t said a thing about you. Nothing good anyway.” Kimi must’ve caught the frown on Seth’s face because she quickly added, “but …but that doesn’t mean she won’t. Diamond’s your imprint—the pull is bound to bring you both together. She’s just a slow burner.”
He liked that association, a slow burner. Seth didn’t think himself as one because he was ready to jump into love with open arms, but it gave him a new perspective about Diamond that he didn’t consider. It motivated him to win her heart with different tactics than the one taught—which was to just go for it without any regrets.
“A slow-burner with a dating app? Is she seeing someone?” He remembered some of their conversation last night. They were in Diamond’s phone squealing over the men’s profile that swiped over on her, Tayen daring Diamond to match with a few of them for shits and giggles. Seth needed to know if there was more in the picture to keep them out of it.
She gave him a look while also combing out the tangles in her hair with her fingers. “No. She isn’t seeing anyone.”
“Is she trying to see someone?”
“I don’t know.” She shrugged. “Probably so. Probably not.”
A dragged groan tickled up his throat. “What is that telling me? Either she’s looking for a relationship or she isn’t. Why have a dating app if she isn’t interested in one and is a ‘slow burner’ according to you?”
Seth sounded a bit more irritated than he intended to. He wasn’t judging Diamond for downloading a dating app, but truly wanted to know what she was looking for to better navigate their relationship and better his chances of being there for her in the way she needed.
“Women have needs too, Seth. She’s not on a dating app seeking a white picket fence and a billionaire tech husband—she’s trying to get laid. I’m sure.” Even Kimi didn’t know what possessed Diamond’s decision and tried to make sense of it for Seth before he went crazy. “College is stressful enough. Track on top of it. Life included. If someone can take that away for a few hours then why the fuck not?”
It didn’t cross his mind that Diamond was sexually active. Having those needs he wasn’t experienced in. She’s had an entire life before him so of course it made sense. Just because she became the center of his world didn’t mean he automatically was hers and it was a hard pill to swallow.
Paul once forced him to download a dating app to get out there and meet others, but it was deleted as soon as the download completed. It wasn’t his thing.
“You’ll put in a good word for me, right?” Seth decided not to dwell on it and move forward with the knowledge he had. “Right, Kimi?” He nudged her shoulder when she said nothing.
Kimi chuckled. “Like what?”
“Don’t mention I’m a gamer for one or that I have a niche collection of DC comics. It’s gotten such a bad reputation by the White man, I’d like to keep that from her ears to avoid assumptions.”
Seth downed his cold water in four big gulps. He felt it all through his chest and his stomach. It woke him right up though it wasn’t enough to suppress his hunger. If he didn’t have rounds this morning he would’ve gotten some breakfast for both him and Diamond. Pretty sure Emily was hosting breakfast at her house so he could meet her there after showering.
“So you’re a nerd. It’s not much of a secret.” They crossed one of the local bridges tourists used to navigate, trying to put enough distance from them before they phase. “I don’t get why you're trying to hide that about yourself. Haven’t you heard? Nerds are totally in and they’re hot. It’s not like you can redecorate your room either or it’d be pretty much empty.”
“It’s not…I don’t know.” He twisted the bottle cap with a shrug. “Diamond has to think of me as a man, not childish. Someone capable and worth the time to invest in.” His face felt hot when his cousin laughed at him for purposely deepening his voice to prove a point. A point Embry stuck in his head.
“You find out she’s a year and some months older and now you gotta become ‘a man’? You’re ridiculous.”
This was the first Seth heard of this. Diamond being older. He failed to ask about her age because it truly didn’t matter nor did it change anything, but it made sense with her and Kimi being closer than close. Sharing a dorm with Renesmee was another sign.
That meant she was a sophomore while Seth was a freshman in college.
Seth cleared his throat, switching back to his normal tone. “Just say something good. Something along the lines of, ‘Seth is a handsome guy who volunteers around the reservation and helps our elders’. Oh, that’s good.” Seth praised before adding, “maybe add in, ‘he’s very thoughtful and caring and family-oriented’. Don’t forget that part, women like that. Plus it’s true, I like kids. Oh, and say—”
“What the hell is this? Am I reciting her an overview of your dating profile? This isn’t an interview, Seth.” Kimi interrupted, laughing even harder than before. It was starting to irritate him.
“Come on.” He begged. “I barely ask you for anything but this one simple task. Can’t you do this one thing for me? Your second-hand embarrassment depends on it. My life literally depends on it.”
“Fine. I mean, how can I say no when you’re giving me puppy eyes?” She was still laughing. “I’ll find a way to squeeze you into our daily conversations.”
“Don’t make it obvious though.” Seth chimed.
“I know what I’m doing, Seth.”
It’s Kimi they were talking about. He didn’t trust she wouldn’t make it obvious, but trusted she would complete the task without a problem.
Once they were far within the forest, they phased and began their rounds around the perimeter. As usual, there weren’t any strange supernatural scents to report back or anything out of the ordinary. Seth lingered around the border to get as far from the pack with the mindhive in place.
Being sent vivid thoughts of his packmates with their imprints living out their happily ever afters left a bitter taste on Seth’s tongue. He craved those happy and intimate moments himself. Though it’s wise first to seek what Diamond actually wanted from him relationship-wise—aside from staying the fuck away—before acting on his relatively perverted thoughts.
It’d only been a few hours and Seth didn’t know his place as her wolf. He had a sense, but it’s weak given they were practically strangers.
Seth decided to seek out Jacob toward the end of his rounds. Since deciding to leave the reservation once and for all, his alpha needed to be informed. Turns out he already knew as it was all Seth thought about on the way to him and wished him luck in the big city. Jacob reminded him that just because he was hours away from the pack it didn’t make him any less of a member, and he could still perform his duties during the weekends or early mornings through the weekdays. Whichever worked best for him.
Jacob had even offered to ask Billy to host a lunching at his place so he could tell the stories to Diamond, slowly introducing her to the existence of wolves. Then the imprint. It was perfect since she was staying another night. The quicker she knew, the quicker Seth could love her completely without feeling like he was hiding something from her. He saw how that played out with Jacob and Renesmee and refused their past to become his future.
Seth arrived home to take a quick shower before heading back to Diamond. Figured he could whip up some breakfast with minimal cooking skills, something light so there’s enough space for lunch.
As he neared the front door, his super-hearing picked up movement within his house. Specifically in the kitchen area and the upstairs bathroom. One long whiff to identify the intruders and he’d lost control of his breathing, easily identifying his imprint along with Renesmee, Tayen, and Kimi.
She’s in my house.
Diamond is actually in my house.
Seth rushed inside where he discovered Tayen, Renesmee, and Kimi in the kitchen flipping blueberry cinnamon pancakes. All in his refrigerator and searching the cabinets for extra plates exactly where it’s placed as if they lived here. To his disappointment, Diamond wasn’t here. Her scent lingered upstairs, currently taking a shower while cursing to herself for accidentally wetting her braids.
“What the hell?” Seth exclaimed at the scene displayed. He ripped free a paper towel and wiped the batter stained along the counters. Simone would kill him.
Tayen’s nose scrunched in disgust. “ Ugh, you stink.”
Renesmee covered her nose. “Yeah, you really do. There’s only so much dog smell I can handle before it’s unbearable.” She flipped the burning pancake before finding the air freshener under the sink and sprayed the kitchen.
Kimi was sitting on the counter in a clean pair of clothes, folding a hot pancake like a hot dog before shoving it in her mouth. She was the only one unbothered by this smell.
Seth didn’t have to smell himself to know he stank of outside, but if Tayen smelled it with her human nose, it meant it was deadly. There wasn’t much he could do about that except for showering. “I’m allowed to stink up my house where you three don’t belong. Be lucky I showed up fully clothed instead.” Seth defended.
He usually traveled home naked to jump straight in the shower. It’s easy to avoid the neighbors in a forest where they don’t live directly nearby.
He tossed out the icky-covered paper towel. “Please don’t tell me you guys broke into my house for food like a bunch of wild raccoons? Isn’t Emily hosting breakfast this morning? Should I even ask about any potential broken windows you've smashed, and was Diamond hurt during the process?” Seth was teasing the situation when he started but had gotten worried about his imprint toward the end that nothing was funny anymore.
He detected no blood within the house or anywhere within the distance his sense of smell traveled.
“No one’s hurt. Your imprint is fine.” Tayen said teasingly.
Renesmee reached into her back pocket and pulled her keychain to dangle. Amongst five other keys was a familiar Spider-Man printed key. “You gave me a spare key, remember?”
“Right.” He cleared his throat to deflect some of his shame. “Why are you all here again? Specifically in my house, using up all my things none of you paid for.”
“Neither did you.” Tayen pointed out with a chuckle. Her dull pink hair parted and braided into two big braids matched her sweater, paired with baggy jean shorts. She was mixing extra cinnamon in another batch.
“Ungrateful much?” Kimi pushed herself off the counter for another pancake. “You should be thanking us for bringing Diamond here, filling your walls with her heavenly scent where you know she’s safe. That we even suggested coming here to get ready when Jacob’s place is closer and my sister cooked me a whole batch of bacon. We’re trying to help you, dipshit.”
Seth backed down when sensing her irritation. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m over the top happy she’s here. It’s just…I wish someone gave me a heads up so I could clean up the place and make it presentable.”
Tayen opened her mouth to say something but Renesmee spoke over her. “You’re right. We came with good intentions, but we should’ve given you a heads-up instead of acting on our own accord.”
Seth couldn’t find it in himself to be mad at them for bringing Diamond around. I mean, fuck, she’s in my house right now.
The house itself wasn’t in bad shape either. Both Leah and Simone didn’t like leaving on trips to return to a dirty house and cleaned the place spotless, though Leah did most of the chores so she could relax and get her mind focused on her presentation.
But Seth was picky.
His sharp sight kept picking up the slightest strand of hair breezing between their feet and previous stains Simone might’ve missed. He needed the place spotless and rushed to pick up the strand, then wiped the stain, and cleaned up around the trespassers adding to the mess.
Seth perked up at Diamond’s footsteps heading downstairs. He quickly scurried off his feet with a gasp and rushed into the living room to hide behind the couch that luckily wasn’t pushed to the wall as Simone normally liked it. Their giggles could be heard, Tayen openly calling Seth an idiot.
He refused to present himself musty and in sweaty clothes that stuck to his skin. Tayen wasn’t a shapeshifter, therefore didn’t have heightened senses compared to those who were—though knew of its existence being a part of the tribe—so if she thought he stunk, Diamond would too. He needed to leave a good memory with her.
Seth peeked around the couch on all fours as her bare feet passed, catching her backside entering the kitchen. She wore a thick-sleeved tank top tucked in dark jeans, shrugging on her plain black jacket and rolled up the sleeves above her elbows. Her braids were tied back into a low ponytail, the curly ends folded into the band which looked like a deflated balloon. He didn’t wanna seem weird for checking out her from head to toe, specifically her ass the way her jeans fitted, but it couldn’t be helped.
She has a nice ass.
The thought turned him on. Everything about her was turning him on.
She placed her bag on the counter and grabbed an empty plate nearby to pack it with pancakes. She must’ve sensed the awkwardness in the air and the lingering laughter she wasn’t a part of. “Why's everyone being weird? Was someone just here? I could’ve sworn I heard y’all talking to someone.” Diamond asked while sliding on two slices of pancakes.
Renesmee wasn’t seen from this angle but heard her voice as she replied, “no one’s being weird. It’s just us and Seth. He came back not too long ago from helping Jacob at his place with something.”
Right. She still didn’t know of the legends and of them being wolves. Seth needed to get around to asking her to attend lunch with him at Jacob’s.
“Right. The weirdo from last night.” Diamond muttered as she connected pieces of her memory from last night. There was a southern tang in her words he actually noticed since his mind wasn't temporarily blinded. Not Deep South Alabama strong, but there was something different than how everyone spoke up north.
Seth jerked back behind the couch when Diamond’s head snapped around, as if searching for any sign of him. Probably to avoid him at all costs which he didn’t blame her for.
“Still don’t know why we came here out of all places.” She whispered. And unfortunately, Seth still heard her. “Don’t your sister live around here, Kimi? I know you got family in the area too, Tayen. Were they just out of the question?”
Still fucking hurts. He thought the peace-offering worked but apparently it didn’t.
Tayen was grabbing a handful of blueberries to shove in her mouth when she got called out. “I mean…” she thought about the situation and how they went about it. “I guess there was a possibility we could’ve headed over to my place, but—”
“The cute weirdo, am I right?” A nervous laughter erupted from Kimi and Seth sighed heavily with disappointment. He just knew it was going to get worse from here. “Seth got all the girls here drooling out their mouths to be with him that’s why they call him the ‘Rez Rizzer’, but he’s turned every single one of them down. He’s a lover boy at heart. Only has eyes for one woman—who he’s searching for, in a sense.”
The level of cringe twisting his stomach and the will to die right then and there grew stronger. The Rez Rizzer? The fuck was that? This was her not making it obvious? Her poor attempt to twist the narrative about Seth was likely making it worse because none of that was true. Most of it at least.
No woman in the tribe were drooling out their mouths to be with Seth. He didn’t have the sauce like Embry and everyone else, who women normally chased after. They had all the experience when it came to wowing women, something Seth lacked severely.
It’s true though that there had been few occasions where someone was interested in him—four women at most, including Sabrina, a girl in one of his classes who sends pictures of a singler picked flower in his DMs every week. The others weren’t worth mentioning since nothing came out of it because they were eventually turned down or turned off.
He did have eyes for one woman, and he couldn’t wait to love her.
Seth decided to stay instead of finding the perfect opportunity to run upstairs. He desperately wanted to know what Diamond thought of him. A weirdo was one thing, but being cute was another. He could work with that.
She gave a careless shrug. “He’s alright. I don’t know. I didn’t get a good look at him ‘cause whatever Kimi gave me last night had me fucked up. I’m still lightheaded but not as bad as yesterday.” Kimi offered a sheepish grin with an apology. “Plus he kissed me, so all I’m getting is weird vibes.”
Seth closed his eyes as pain struck. He couldn’t win with this woman. She’s going to hate me forever.
As if knowing what Seth was thinking despite his silent meltdown, Renesmee inquired, “What about the peace-offering plate?”
“Oh, I ate it. I was hungry. I’m not gone turn down good food at a cookout.”
Tayen shrugged. “That’s something at least.” That was definitely for Seth to hear rather than for Diamond who didn’t know what to make of that reply. It was also spoken in their native language which was clear Diamond hadn’t learned.
He couldn’t bring himself to hear anymore of this, not that he could drown them out with his super-hearing.
Once Diamond was out of view, Seth rushed to his feet, up the stairs, and into his bedroom with the door silently shut behind him. He went through his pile of clean clothes he hadn’t gotten around to folding and searched for something decent to wear after his shower. He pondered the majority of the time, thinking of ways to change her perspective about him before lunch at Jacob’s.
It’s better if Diamond heard it from Billy. That way if the concept of werewolves seemed delusional coming from the guy she thought was weird, they could easily back him up. Also an elder was far more convincing in ways Seth wasn’t.
He truly was lacking in many departments. Looking at it now, Diamond was waaay out of his league. He had much to prove and was willing to do whatever it took.
Once dressed, now in a basic black tee paired with light-washed jeans, Seth texted Jacob to triple confirm the late lunch. He assured once again that it was happening and Billy was fine with it. He definitely was overthinking every little detail but for good reason. Everything needed to be perfect.
Seth shuffled through his thick curly hair unsure how to style it. It was a tad shorter than last month after cutting off dead ends. Just at his shoulders. After playing with it a few times, he decided to leave it be. Let it have pride in its own mind.
Diamond lifted her head from scrolling through her phone and registered Seth entering the dining room connected to the kitchen. She sat at the table with half her pancake drowned in syrup gone. She stared a bit longer rather than looking away.
His pulse quickened when holding her contact and told himself not to do anything stupid. There were multiple ways he could embarrass himself in front of beautiful women; nevertheless his imprint. He’d done it before and was bound to do it again.
Diamond tilted her head, a glint in her eyes as she took him in from head to toe. Her lips parted just enough to reveal a hint of curiosity, and even straightened her posture for a better look. Her gaze lingered longer than intended, not missing a single detail as if deciding whether she liked what she saw or not. It made Seth very nervous evident by the sweat building in his palms.
The weight of her stare grew heavy that he wondered if there was something on his face. He’d gotten dressed so quickly it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if he had. But the way her brow lifted ever so slightly told him otherwise—Diamond was checking him out, and she definitely thought he was cute.
Not just alright. But more than that, handsome even.
Progress.
His teeth sank into his bottom lip to contain his smile fighting to express these gushy feelings. “H-hi.” Seth sighed inwardly to himself for stuttering a basic saying. A singular word.
Diamond looked to Renesmee sitting beside her, giving an encouraging nod for her to speak up. She swallowed what was left in her mouth. “So you're Seth?”
It was clear by the tone of her voice that she was putting together a proper face and identity to the name of the man whom assaulted her.
Embarrassment heated his face. “I am. And you're Diamond, right?”
She nodded and went back to eating her pancakes and scrolling through her media feed.
It was his turn for encouragement and caught Kimi’s gesture to fill the empty spot beside her. Renesmee even scooted over to give them some form of privacy, typing away on her phone. The same as Kimi and Tayen. It seemed the girls were in a group chat, either placing their bets or teasing the moment. Tayen’s soft chuckle and eyeing gave it away.
“I hope the water stayed hot during your shower,” Seth said while easing into the seat beside her. “It trips sometimes and can get cold after three minutes max. Sometimes shorter.”
Still strolling on her phone, “No, it was fine.”
“Are the pancakes good?”
“Yep.”
Short answers were disheartening, but it motivated Seth to choose a better question for longer answers. Anything to be more interesting than her phone.
“So I hear it’s your first time at the reservation?” Seth tried again. “How you liking it so far? Is it up to your expectations?”
He couldn’t ignore the hunger eating at him but couldn’t bring himself to leave Diamond’s side. He appreciated Kimi for noticing and made him a plate with three pancakes stacked and topped with cut strawberries. She mouthed something stupid but he was too busy drowning his pancakes with syrup to acknowledge.
Diamond washed her pancakes down with water. “Um, yeah. It’s nice.” She must’ve caught Renesmee prompting her to say more as Seth had cause she actually said more. “Much cooler at night than in Florida, but it’s beautiful. I think the reservation is beautiful from what I’ve seen this morning on the way here. Though according to Kimi, this isn’t all of it.”
“And I stand on it.” Said Kimi with pride.
“It’s not. The Quileute tribe is far more beautiful than what you’ve seen. I can definitely show you around if you’re not too busy? You could tell me more about Florida in return since I’ve never been. How does, let me see,” Seth pretended to think about these options. “Today sounds? Jacob and Renesmee are hosting a late lunch and since you’ll still be in town, figured you might be there too?”
Renesmee perked. “I am?” The look from Seth set her straight and she caught on immediately, clearing her throat. “Oh, yes, I am! We are. Jacob’s father, Billy, makes the best seaweed bean stew. It’s the reservation’s favorite.”
Seth nodded in agreement. “I’m thinking, I give you that tour after breakfast. That way we can make ourselves to Billy’s along the way.”
“You should swing by Oaks Carving,” Tayen chimed in. "Our tribe's handwork needs more appreciation and my uncle would love a new face that isn’t White. There's lots of cute things you can buy or get carved." None of them were giving her a chance to speak if she had something to say.
Diamond looked as though she was considering her options. If she thought it smart to be alone with the weird guy or a guy she thought was cute. The echoes of voices within his head couldn’t be helped but think how pretty she looks thinking. Just pretty overall. Pretty right now.
The moment came short when a vibrating phone picked up in his ear and followed it toward the phone in Diamond’s hand. The caller ID read ‘Boss’. It seemed important because she slid out from her chair with an ‘excuse me’.
Seth didn’t move from her vicinity and purposely sat as he was to be even closer without trying. Which meant Diamond had to squeeze around him. His eyes followed her escaping toward the living room to answer her phone, unapologetically allowing his eyes to follow her figure down to her ass again.
Kimi gagged behind him. “You’re such a guy.”
Seth flicked off his cousin.
Only when she was out of view did he turn around to Tayen offering a thumbs up. “I think you did good!”
“She was totally about to agree.” Renesmee nodded profusely.
“Yeah, I mean, you weren't letting up on her. I’m sure she would’ve said yes if it hadn’t been for the call.” Kimi dumped her plate in the sink and let the water run over it, waiting for it to get hot enough to wash.
“I’d feel better if she actually did.” He sank in his chair with a pout as he mumbled, “but thanks.”
Seth tried to distract himself from listening to Diamond’s conversation and it couldn’t be helped. She was practically having the conversation in her ear. It’s a bit hard to ignore.
“Sorry to bother you while you’re still recovering from an upset stomach. I hope you’re feeling better.” An older woman with a slight accent, Diamond’s boss, said after the call was answered. She seemed genuinely worried about this stomach ache Seth had no idea about.
It’s not like she made it obvious and in his defense, he was more focused on kissing her than assessing her true needs. He mentally slapped himself and scolded himself about being more attentive to her needs.
He stood from his chair and searched the cabinets for Simone’s infamous tea stash where he found the lemon honey ginger tea box. Then put on some boiling water to prepare.
“I’m good.” Diamond took a moment to answer. “Did something happen?”
“Unfortunately, yes. Two called out sick and left us low on staff, so I’m calling everyone to see if they’re interested in picking up some extra hours?”
“I’m in La Push.” Diamond replied hesitantly, like she was guilty about something.
“Not this second. Much later.” Her boss communicated, and if Diamond was contemplating once again, her boss laid the final blow no college student would ever refuse. “I’ll pay double if anything. I’m desperate.”
Without wasting another second, “What time?”
“Four to eleven.”
“Alright. I’ll take it.”
Her boss expressed her gratitude and left Seth stuck in a difficult position.
This wasn’t right. She was supposed to stay another night—the entire weekend with him in La Push. Not leave off early to appease her desperate boss who knew better than to ask that of her when she wasn’t feeling good in the first place.
She can’t leave early, his wolf growled out in frustration. Not when she hadn’t been given a tour of the reservation or spoken to Billy. Not when she has no clue about the legends and wolves and vampires and ultimately the imprint.
Everything Seth planned for the day had been ruined.
But the worst part about it was that he couldn’t blame Diamond for needing the money. He didn’t know her situation and felt disgusted with himself for even trying to come between her money. Plus he’d have to explain how he heard their conversation even if he wanted to say something.
The water came to a boil. Seth quickly poured it into a mug and ripped open the packet to soak.
He felt her presence enter the kitchen and her nervousness too. They each sent a look knowing what was to come as most of them did. “I gotta go,” she started with a nervous breath, speaking directly to Renesmee. “A situation came up at my job so I need that ride back to Seattle. I know we had plans today and I feel terrible for ruining them, but...”
Renesmee gave an understanding nod.
“I can drive you back!” Seth blurted before he could process the words.
Renesmee jumped to her feet with an arm clasped around Diamond’s shoulder. “Oh, that’s perfect! You don’t mind, right? Seth is a perfectly safe driver and I trust him.”
Seth stood there with a dumb smile even as she pulled Renesmee aside to whisper, “I don’t know him. Not like you do. I don’t trust riding four hours with a stranger.”
“I’ve known Seth since I was a baby. He’s the most trusting person I know. He’s family.” She explained. “I would never put your life in the hands of someone I don’t trust.”
Diamond peered over her shoulder toward Seth pretending not to listen in on their conversation. He flashed her a knowing smile and she sized him down before tearing away her gaze. “Why can’t you just drive me home? It’s what we agreed on.”
“We agreed on leaving tomorrow.” Renesmee expressed carefully. “Jacob is taking me out for the day and I won’t make it in time for the time you need to get back for your shift. I’m sorry but Seth is the only option.”
“This thing with your boyfriend can’t wait another day?”
Renesmee shook her head. “No, it can’t. It really can’t. I’m sorry.”
The rest of everyone within the room knew she was going hunting with Jacob to sustain her vampire side and the hunger that came with it. All but Diamond, who felt betrayed by her closest friend who would choose a boy over her. Seth sensed it and smelled it along her flesh that helped navigate a sense of her emotions. Her chest slowly filled with air then pushed out as she rolled her eyes and muttered a quick ‘whatever’.
Renesmee’s shoulders fell with defeat. “Don’t do that. I said I was sorry, Diamond, and I am.” She tried to reconcile their friendship but Diamond wasn’t hearing it. She seemed like a person set on their feelings, hard to convince.
She went around her friend to grab her stuff off the kitchen counter and walked out, but stopped once she reached the kitchen’s threshold. Seth peered around the kitchen for anything she might’ve left behind and found nothing but the ginger tea.
“Are you coming?”
One by one, their eyes followed Diamond’s gaze toward Seth. She’s talking to me. She’s looking right at me.
And realized if he didn’t say something now she might think he was an even bigger idiot. He perked up on his feet, filled with excitement. “Oh, yes! Just give me—” she walked out the kitchen as he was gathering himself, already outside. “—a moment.”

Chapter Five | Four Hours Stuck With You
𝘓𝘢 𝘗𝘶𝘴𝘩, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 10, 2024
𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗛𝗨𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗗 𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗔𝗥𝗠𝗦 𝗔𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦 𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦𝗧 despite wearing a jacket to combat the chilly temperature. Though she was somewhat used to it after living in Washington for about two years, it was definitely a different kind of cold from the South. Her frustration toward one of her closest friends kept her warm.
To Diamond, it wasn't even about Renesmee choosing her boyfriend first or that she wanted to be chosen first. It's the principle of it. She invited her here. She promised to take her home. And fuck, she did want to get chosen over her long-term boyfriend. What's so bad about it? What happened to sisterhood? Sisters over misters?
She had to compete for her mother's attention at home. She'd be damned to compete for friends too. So for right now, fuck everyone. Emyri, a friend since their first year classes who also travelled far from home, somewhere in Mississippi, sure was getting an earful as Diamond's fingers tapped rapidly against the keyboard.
Many messages buzzed through seconds later.
Diamond would laugh if her friend wasn't speaking the truth.
Seth rushed around with an apology, and Diamond couldn't help the eye roll that escaped. Every little thing irritated her at the moment. Though it was strange that his passing breeze was warm, like heating pads warm, and not chilly or slightly warm as it usually was with everyone else.
He unlocked the car and held open the passenger door as Diamond approached the deep blue jeep, shoving her phone in her back pocket. All theories ceased to exist about his warmth when a blue polka dot mug appeared in his hand.
"After you," he motioned his free hand like a chauffeur, seemingly regretting it from the face made afterward. "Watch your step." He pointed out the obvious step, already offering his hand in case his help was needed.
It wasn't.
"Thanks." Diamond muttered without looking his way.
She got in without his assistance and placed her bag filled with yesterday's clothes and leftovers on the floor between her feet. It couldn't be helped but to inspect her surroundings. The car was relatively clean. It didn't smell weird like a man's been here, but like an earthy scent diffuser mixed with cologne. Or it was the specs of dirt on the floor from many shoes walking this forest that gave off that earthy scent. There was also a small display of characteristic rubber ducks along the dashboard.
Seth retracted his hand and closed the door after Diamond was settled. He jogged around to fill the driver's seat, already filling her ears with various questions aside from the precise address of her dorm. He wondered if she preferred the windows cracked or the heater on or both. If she was comfortable. If she wanted to connect to the aux and play whatever she desired. If she had a specific preference for music. He'd even assured that if at any moment she needed to use the bathroom or grab a quick bite, he would immediately take the nearest exit.
His concern was refreshing but it's too much. Question after question before the last one settled, but Diamond wasn't rude with her response. There was an irritated bite to her words but not rude overall. It wasn't smart to agitate someone whom she'd be stuck in the car with for hours and who would know exactly where she lived.
"Just keep the heater on," Diamond said, putting on her seatbelt. He was already fumbling for the heater to turn on. "I don't want the aux and I don't care what you put on. I'm fine. Do you. If I'm uncomfortable, I'll say something."
Maybe she was a little bit rude. At least he didn't take it to heart.
"Okay," he hooked his phone on the stance after securing his seatbelt, leaving the conversation be. "This is also for you, for your stomach. It's ginger tea."
Diamond glanced down at the offered steamy mug but didn't take it. "I don't have a stomachache." She said, and his brows knitted with confusion.
"But your boss—I mean, Nes said—"
"It was just a lie to get off work early to be here, and she knows that."
His shoulders relaxed with a long exhale. "Oh. Good to know."
Diamond took the mug just as he was placing it in the cupholder. Figured it would keep her warm until the car heats up. She shook her head with a scoff that confused Seth, but he didn't ask the reasoning behind it.
She can't believe she trusted her friend's crazy ass aunt for a life-changing moment that never came. Her first kiss was stolen, her roommate ditched her for her boyfriend, it's cold as hell, she got called into work, and now she's stuck with the same guy who kissed her.
Nothing about this short-lived trip changed anything in her life or fixed her problems. Sure, she had fun for a while and enjoyed the beach view. Even met new people who were more eager to meet her, but none offered what she truly wanted. Felt she needed.
Diamond didn't expect to get swooped off her feet in one night like Cinderella, but she'd be lying if she didn't set high expectations the way Renesmee's aunt was speaking. Anything drastic that wouldn't have her desperately crawling back to work on an off day because money held more value than freedom.
She chuckled to herself which morphed into a shiver, and clutched the mug tighter in her hands. Its warmth felt nice in her chest after a couple of sips.
"It takes a minute for the car to warm up," Seth responded to her shiver, his hand pressed against the AC, waiting for the heat to kick in. "Especially since I haven't used it in a while. Sorry."
Kimi and Tayen were peeking through the window with big suspicious smiles on their faces. Kimi likely said something outlandish that had both of them laughing up a fit. Renesmee stood at the open door wearing an apologetic expression, departing with a wave as Seth finally drove off.
Diamond frowned before looking away. She couldn't ignore Seth after hearing what he just said. "You don't use the heater? Like never?" Her brows knitted with much confusion.
Seth gave a casual shrug, the corner of his mouth tugging like it was no big deal. "Stopped needing it around thirteen."
She blinked. "Okay...so how exactly do you keep yourself from freezing to death then? 'Cause that little ass shirt ain't doing shit, that I know. I might be from the South but it's cold as hell here."
Seth peered down at his black t-shirt with a wide-eyed expression that parted his lips and raised his brows almost to his thick hairline, not expecting Diamond to come at him like that. To speak to him really. Good thing he didn't seem offended and found it funny instead.
"Has it ever occurred to you that I might actually like the cold?" He countered with a question of his own, rather proud of it too. "I'm a Northwesterner after all. Native to this land. It takes a lot for me to get cold."
"I think you're built different and I don't mean that in a good way. In a more...concerned way."
She sipped the tea, the steam tickling her face.
"Born different for sure." He muttered as he turned onto another narrow road, following exactly where the GPS was taking him. "But I dunno. I guess the cold doesn't affect me like that, not in the way you think it does. I like to think I have the ability to adjust naturally to the weather like—"
"Wolves?" Diamond asked teasingly.
His breath noticeably hitched, just for a second, but recovered quickly with a sheepish grin. "I was gonna say huskies, but they're pretty much wolves too. A cuter, smaller version of wolves." He hesitated before asking, "do you know much about wolves? Like...seen one up close?"
She gave him a look. "I have internet. It's not that hard to figure out what a wolf looks like. Nevertheless, learn about them."
No way in hell this man thought Diamond was stupid not to know anything about wolves. Dogs were literally domesticated wolves in a sense. They show up everywhere in the media from movies to paranormal romance novels, to smut-filled fanfics, to sites and channels dedicated to the study of wolves, to quite literally stepping outside to see one.
Which Diamond hadn't yet since living in Washington. But still. This was what happened when she gave people the smallest amount of attention.
He rubbed the back of his neck with a nervous chuckle. "Right. Of course. But not in real life, right? Not around here?"
Her gaze snapped to him from watching the road ahead. She would've thought he was reading her mind if he didn't already know the answer from her thoughts. It was then she noticed he never spared a glance toward the GPS, like he already knew where he was going. It made sense since he was native to the area and likely knew every back road on the top of his head. He also had both hands on the wheel, gripping it like his life depended on it.
Either he was nervous or in pain or something else. Possibly everything.
Seeing him in better lighting, up close, one-on-one, from a different angle, and sober, highlighted his handsome features. Seth was nowhere near ugly or even alright. She even hated her thoughts for thinking he was cute when he's the same guy who kissed her. Shame to waste a good face and body behind a weird personality.
"Why?" Diamond tilted her head, her braids falling to one side. "You offering to show me a wolf? Don't tell me this was part of your grand tour of the reservation?"
His face lit up, eyes bright. "Wait—so you would've said yes to the tour?"
She averted her gaze when his head turned toward her, yet she could still feel his grin spreading across his face even without looking.
"No. But if someone else asked...maybe."
Through the window's reflection, Seth's grin didn't fade, not even the slightest. "Well then," he said softly with much hope, "guess I'd better make a stronger case next time."
Or first impression, Diamond thought but chewed her bottom lip to refrain from speaking it out loud.
But whatever. There's no need to sulk on it any longer than she has since what's done was done. Now here she was, stuck for four hours in the car with him, not that she had a choice either. Hopefully, he doesn't try to kiss her again.
𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗔𝗦𝗟𝗘𝗘𝗣 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗝𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗘, and that came to her as a surprise. Car rides naturally wore her out that she felt her eyes growing heavy the second they were on the highway, but forced herself to stay awake. She didn't like sleeping with new drivers, nevertheless alone with a male stranger. Only until their driving was deemed safe enough would she take the risk. And she did, without knowing it.
Kudos to Seth for being a safe driver.
Another bonus for not feeding into the impulse of filling the void once it grew quiet. He looked chatty and that was the part Diamond feared. Not in a bad way. She just wasn't in the mood to hold a conversation. Didn't have much to say to him anyway. Luckily, he seemed aware of when to talk and when to stay quiet. His playlist of chill R&B did the rest.
Diamond's head slipped off the window when the jeep took a soft right, heading off the highway. She glanced at his phone and her pulse quickened. "Where are you going? Why are we getting off the highway? There's still an hour left."
An hour and twenty minutes to be exact.
Seth sensed her panic and quickly responded in surrender, "I didn't mean to wake you, sorry. We're low on gas and I could use a quick bathroom break."
She eased herself back in the seat as he pulled into the nearest gas station. Her thudding pulse needed a moment to calm down after thinking the worst was about to happen, and he was about to kidnap her or something outrageous. Diamond wasn't a fighter but had a mean right hook. Along with mace and a pocket knife shoved somewhere deep in her bag.
Seth toyed with the ignition button once parked, unsure if he should keep the car on or turn it off. "If you gotta use the bathroom, now is the time to do it."
"No thanks." Diamond shut down immediately. "I do use the bathroom at gas stations. Their bathrooms scare me."
A smile stretched his lips at her disgust with a quick nod. "Noted. I think I spotted a couple of fast food spots along the street and a Walmart if you're fancy. We'll head there after I pump some gas and handle my business."
"I can hold it."
His brows rose. "For another hour and a half?"
Diamond crossed her arms, clenching her thighs at the unbearable pressure screaming for release. That damn ginger tea. She was hungry as well, not in the mood for her leftovers, and hoped the pressure against her stomach from her arms would block out the gurgling. This kind of suffering could only last for so long and was convinced she could last another hour and some minutes. No more detours.
"Another hour is nothing." She cleared her throat when her voice started straining at another wave of pressure. "Just do what you gotta do so we can get back on the road. I don't wanna arrive any later than the initial time. I still have to get ready and all that."
He waited for a bit, like he was waiting for Diamond to change her mind or something. Then the crease between his brows deepened when his eyes narrowed toward her crossed arms shoved deep into her stomach with a frown. She could've sworn he heard the agony screams of her organs begging to be saved and tightened her arms, her right leg shaking to distract her mind. If he wanted to say something, he didn't. He instead lowered the windows before cutting off the car to fill the gas and whatever else he needed to do.
Just when the light turned green to get back onto the highway, Seth continued straight. He didn't stop until he pulled into the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant. When questioning this rash decision, Seth replied that he was getting hungry and refused to drive on an empty stomach. It wasn't in his culture or nature to travel hungry, so he said.
Diamond wanted to protest further but eventually got out to use the bathroom. She really had to go and couldn't bring herself to question the customs of his culture, if true, even if it prolonged their arrival time. Regardless of whether he was weird, she still respected that about him especially knowing she knew nothing about the Quileute tribe aside from their campaign of moving to higher grounds. It showed up along her feed, talked about with Kimi and Tayen, and other native students who'd pass out fliers and hold small beneficial events to raise donations toward the cause.
Either way, she's glad he made the stop.
Seth was waiting patiently at a table when Diamond finished. He was deep in his phone, texting whoever with such speed that one would think he was in trouble and being held hostage by Diamond. His head lifted as if sensing her presence and stood immediately, shoving his phone into his back pocket. The brightest smile lit his face as if she were the only woman in his world.
It wasn't returned, but highly tempted.
"What do you want? It's on me." He offered, guiding them toward the short line. His arms crossed as he viewed the menu, and Diamond couldn't help but notice his muscles straining against his black tee.
He's a lot stronger than he appeared. Also taller. Diamond was tall enough but he made her feel somewhat small.
She looked away when he looked toward her for an answer. Then cleared her throat, playing with her braids. "Don't worry about it, I got it."
Diamond could've sworn she caught a frustrated look on Seth's face, but she was too focused on the menu to analyze his reaction. He allowed her to order first when the cashier called them next. Just as she was digging in her bag and searching for her wallet to pay with cash, a bell dinged and 'transaction complete' spelled across the screen.
"Here's your receipt!" The cashier ripped the paper, holding it nowhere toward Diamond's direction. The hand that took it wasn't Diamond's either.
She nearly broke her neck looking back at Seth as he placed another order for himself before using the same caseless phone to pay for his meal. The same that was paid for hers. She chewed the inside of her cheek. The nerve of him to ignore her glare, all pleased and guiltless about what he'd done.
"You didn't have to do that. I had it." Diamond grabbed her cup from his hand, which he also took before her, and decided to fill it up with lemonade.
He gave a smug shrug, unable to contain his growing smile. "I wanted to."
"But I had it."
"It's already done." He must've caught her eye roll because he quickly added, "You can pay for the next meal if you like, but when you're around me, I got it."
"How chivalrous." She said, sarcasm laced in her words.
"I am."
Seth leaned against the counter, nearly losing his footing from there being too much space between him and the counter than anticipated. He tried to play it off by inspecting the many drink options, his hand cupping his chin and was immensely focused, but it was too late because Diamond and another customer caught everything.
His face tinted with embarrassment. "I-I meant to do that."
It unexpectedly cracked a smile from Diamond. "Okay, sure." She chuckled while shaking her head in playful disbelief.
She moved closer toward the registers to listen out for her order number. There was some struggle to sip her drink without it threatening to go down the wrong way from laughing. Replaying the scene in her head and catching those details made it funnier than before.
In truth, she wasn't mad at him for paying. She just wasn't used to it because she had been paying for herself ever since her first summer job back in high school. She couldn't depend on her mother to have it or remember that Diamond was still her only biological child who existed and had needs too. Selfless actions made her uncomfortable, like she was indebted to them. And she was.
First Renesmee and now Seth. Which meant she'd have to talk to her friend and see him again.
Seth pulled up beside Diamond with his drink filled with a dark substance, likely soda from the sizzling. "You have a beautiful smile." He blurted.
Her smile vanished, and she gave him a quick once-over before glancing away. It was the only way she knew how to react to the random compliment. He just had to ruin a good moment.
He cleared his throat, suddenly fidgeting with his white beaded necklace. "I-I mean...I didn't know you could smile. Or laugh."
Diamond shot him a look. "Why wouldn't I? I'm not a robot."
"No! No, not like that." A hand pushed back his fluffy hair with a nervous laughter, though it bounced right back. A small, teal-colored stud was visible on his ears; the right ear had two holes. One with a stud and the second hole with a dangling beaded earring."It's just you've kinda been throwing me the death glare since, like, forever. I didn't think I was on your smile-worthy list."
Diamond snorted. "I wasn't the one who went up and kissed you, did I?"
He mumbled something under his breath that sounded like 'I wish you did', but Diamond wasn't sure what she heard when their order was called out at the same time. She picked up her bag and he picked up his.
Seth rushed around her to open the door as they headed back to the car.
"Thanks." She muttered quickly as she passed him, catching the way his face brightened when acknowledged.
He opened the car door too. That was her final breaking point.
She leaned back with her lips pressed thinly. "You gone open every door I walk through?" Despite the mild teasing in her tone, she felt very offended for some reason. Uncomfortable really.
Seth just offered a sluggish shrug with a mischief grin. "If I reach them before you, yes. You just have to be faster, track star."
He ignored Diamond's glare as he motioned for her to get into the car, likely proud of himself for catching her off guard. She doesn't remember ever telling him she did track. But maybe it wasn't that hard to tell given she had nice legs and his cousin was running on the same team and might've been at the meets to support her.
She got into the car without another word. After he shut the door, he rushed back into the driver's seat.
"About the kiss—" Seth started just as the engine cranked, but Diamond was quick to interrupt him.
"Long forgotten." An overstatement because it hadn't left her mind and she resented him for stealing her first kiss. Even if she pretended it didn't count, it still did. "You was drunk and mistaken me for someone else. It was an honest mistake."
It wasn't like Diamond viewed her first kiss as some sacred thing and was waiting for the perfect person to come along in a sense, but wished the experience wasn't what it was. Unexpected, unprepared, and forced.
She ripped open her barbecue sauce already dipping her nuggets and fries to satisfy her cravings. One would think she hadn't eaten this morning by the way she was grubbing.
"I wasn't drunk. You weren't mistaken." Seth blurted and immediately regretted it by his sour expression. "I mean, I—"
Diamond lowered her barbecue-covered nugget with a sigh. "Seth, you seem like a nice guy. Correct me if I'm feeling a different vibe, but I'm not looking for anything serious or platonic right now. The kiss was an honest mistake. Let's leave it at that and move on."
He never corrected her. It instead compelled him to inquire further information on another subject mentioned. "What are you looking for then?"
"Does it matter?"
"It matters to me."
Diamond nearly choked on her nugget at the seriousness of his reply. No smiles or shrugs, it was serious business for this man. He was struggling to unravel his cheeseburger with his teeth while merging back onto the highway when she stole a glance. She looked away before he had the chance to notice and shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her stomach quickly filling with another foreign substance.
It was a simple phrase.
One little sentence Diamond didn't know she needed to hear until now. She couldn't recount the last time someone ever told her she mattered or what she wanted mattered, if it wasn't a reminder on meet days that everything she did on the track would matter to everyone on the team. Not even from her own mother.
I don't like this feeling. Not one bit. He's trouble.
Diamond was still and quiet for so long that Seth quickly added, "I'm only curious. Just making conversation, that's all." He didn't allow it to settle before he felt compelled to say more. "You don't have to answer right now or ever, but I'd like it if you did. For the sake of killing time, you know? Get to know each other."
"I don't know. Just not anything serious." Diamond sank into the seat, suddenly feeling exposed. She doesn’t even know why she said anything and why she couldn’t stop. "I have a plan to follow through and a GPA to maintain. I can't afford any distractions."
...though what she craved most were distractions.
"You think love or a simple friendship is a distraction?" He asked with genuine curiosity, free of judgment despite picking up something else in the mix. He quickly searched her face for the answer as he shifted safely into the fast lane.
"Not entirely but it can be, yeah."
"I wonder why you think that." It sounded like a question but it was an out-loud thought to himself. "Who made you think love is a distraction?"
Diamond shoved her mouth with fries. "I'm sure you do, Dr. Phil."
The conversation was left at that. She didn't want to get into it with someone she just met. It wasn't a good story either, nor was most of it a personal experience but the experience of others around her. From her mother, the women in the neighborhood, old acquaintances, to the experiences that led kids to her house.
Diamond wanted more for herself than her shitty environment and was determined to get there at any and every cost. So yes, as much as she wanted it, love was a distraction. It had to be.
Seth was quiet again and Diamond knew it wouldn't last for long, but it surprisingly lasted the entire ride back to campus. The constant crease between his brows and the random tapping against the wheel made it clear his mind had drifted. He was thinking hard about something. Likely of something to say or what Diamond had said, or something else that had nothing to do with her. So deep in his thoughts, he hadn't touched much of his food.
The jeep pulled up to the correct dorm building. Diamond gathered her stuff and mumbled a quick thanks as she got out.
From behind her she heard the window slide down. She expected him to say his goodbyes but didn't expect another apology. "I'm sorry about the kiss. I fucked up I know. That man last night wasn't me—well, it was, but that's not the person I am. Not the person I want you to think I am." The regret in his tone made Diamond turn around to hear him out. "We got off on the wrong foot and I'd like to make it up to you. Please tell me how I can fix this because I'd like another chance. Please."
Maybe Diamond was quick to judge Seth. He's still weird in a sense, but he regretted deeply and seemed like the person to wear his heart on his sleeve. Opposite of Diamond. He also looked seconds away from crying if he wasn't forgiven.
So she meant what she said when telling him, "the ride was enough to make up for it."
He stepped in when her roommate ditched her, and practically left her with no choice but to accept the offer. Her own teammates didn't have her back. And while it hurts more than she let on, it's what she prepared herself for. What she's long accepted the moment her mother came home with the first abandoned child and gave everything she had to them—she would always be alone.
She would fight her battles alone. She would celebrate every birthday and holiday alone. She would even experience success alone and likely would die alone, as dramatic as it sounded. Truth be told, and it was a hard one to swallow, no one would ever have her back like Diamond does.
It wasn't a bad thing to accept finding peace in solitude, but it wasn't a good thing either. Unfortunately, it's what Diamond knew. It's her norm so she found it best to leave situations early on before they disappoint her. And with Seth, she might as well end it on a good note. It's the last she'd ever see of him anyway.
Seth shook his head stubbornly. "That's not enough. Let me take you to work. I don't mind; I'm already here."
Diamond nearly considered it because it would save her Uber money and he was already in the area, but driving more after four hours plus four hours back was too much of his time to waste. She would've been irritable and itching for her bed if it was the other way around.
"No need." She declined politely.
"Okay." He chewed his bottom lip. "Then let's exchange—"
"This is enough for me. Thank you." She replied curtly.
Seth was a persistent man. Seemed the type to be set on his goals once it's been decided, much like Diamond but fueled by different ambitions. He must've sensed her irritation because he backed off.
But it didn't stop him from finding another way around the subject. "Then can you offer me some advice?"
Her brow lifted, taken off guard by this request. "On what?"
"I'll be transferring to U.W. in a few days. Maybe less." Great. So she'll be seeing him around more if their classes were nearby. "I've never attended a big university before and heard you've been here for some time. Any tips for adjusting?"
"I wish I had something but I'm still adjusting even after basically two years of living here." Something valuable actually did come to mind when Diamond wanted to leave it at that. "Don't make the same mistake I did—currently still making them—and find every excuse in the book to stay in your dorm. Or wherever you take up residence. Go and meet people. Do fun things. Join a club. Live outside of your means every once in a while. You seem sociable enough so it should be easy."
Seth considered her advice and promised to consider it. He opened his mouth to speak once more but Diamond cut him off once checking the time on her phone.
"Seth, I gotta go." Diamond said in a hurry, searching for her keycard. There's no reason to drag this any longer than it has been. "Thanks for the ride and the food. Get home safely."
It was assumed Seth drove off as Diamond headed toward her dorm building, but was shocked to find the deep blue jeep right where it was parked when glancing over her shoulder. Even had its hazard lights turned on. Could he be waiting for her? No, he's so far out so of course he's still here until he secures a route back home.
Yet, the angle of his head showed he wasn't looking down at his phone but up at Diamond.
She snapped her head back and continued forward inside the building. Only once she was safely inside did he drive off with a small wave.

Chapter Six |Nights Are Better With Tears
𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 10, 2024
𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗'𝗦 𝗠𝗢𝗠 𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗗 just as she was clocking out of work. It was three minutes before twelve in the morning and she was so damn tired, her legs were about to give out. She would've slept in the office during her lunch if she hadn't spent that time eating instead. It didn't stop her fluttering eyes and leaning head while cleaning off her tables at closing time.
It's forever busy on the weekends.
No classes, no school, no rushing to fix cheap ass meals that never settle well. People had more time to sit and thoroughly enjoy their meal, finally a night where they didn't have to cook for themselves. Where they can indulge their cravings the second their paychecks hit. And complain when something wasn't right, despite it being what they ordered.
Because of this, Diamond couldn't catch a break. Running back and forth, carrying heavy trays, cleaning up after grown adults, kids screaming in her ears, dealing with so much nonsense, including taking over for Karan who did shit but stayed on his phone, shit-talking the women who didn't want him. Even if she was somewhat used to the physical labor, it's the emotional part that wrecked her. Her body was there but her mind wasn't.
Diamond honestly regretted picking up this shift and should've spent the day by the freezing cold beach instead. At least she was off tomorrow but still. Anything beats this.
But anything for money, right?
A raspy voice answered the second Diamond accepted the call. "Hey, baby." Her mother greeted warmly, and she pictured her smile tight-lipped and wide, her eyes squinted slightly without her rectangular-shaped glasses, lying on her side as usual. She never liked showing her teeth because she thought they were too big for her mouth and would rather look in pain than happy.
"Hey, mama."
"What you got going on? Did I catch you at a bad time?" She asked, likely sensing her voice thick with exhaustion.
Diamond walked along the pavement, away from her job. The plaza was well-lit and there were very few businesses still operating on extended weekend hours, but many were long closed with storefront cameras should anything happen. A cold breeze forced her to hug the jacket closer.
"Nah, just getting off work. On my way home now." Diamond replied. The app was already open to confirm an Uber, but hadn't paid for the ride yet.
"Why they got you working so late? I'm surprised you answered my call."
So was Diamond. She considered letting the phone ring, but she hadn't heard her mother's voice in a while. These moments were rare and she didn't want to spend it trying to figure out whatever Toyota breed car looked like.
Also don't know why she's shocked when she's the one calling this late.
"It's always busy on the weekends," Diamond said like it was nothing and it didn't almost take her out. "Saturday's the busiest of them all. Getting off this late ain't nothing new."
There was some shuffling on the line before her voice came back. "Shouldn't be working at all, that I fucking know. I thought this was already covered? What's the point of a scholarship if they not gone take care all of you?"
That question could be reasked.
Diamond rubbed her brows with a heavy sigh. "I've been told you the scholarship I have doesn't cover most personal expenses especially if it's not school-related, outside bills, and all of that too. There's still stuff I gotta pay out of pocket for, and I'm trying to save up enough money by the time I graduate so I'm good for a while."
"Don't get hot with me, Diamond. It was just a question." Warned her mother, not knowing this frustration came from explaining the same thing every time they talked. Has to be the 8th time or more by now. "They still shouldn't have you working so damn late. Saturdays or not. You need sleep so you can run better than yesterday."
I need money so I'm not warming up ramen every day and aggressively maintaining the same hairstyle and nails for months—which Diamond wanted to say but found peace with silence. This conversation has played out in many ways and too many damn times to waste and discover a new route that led to nothing.
Her mother hummed, likely nodding her head as she usually did. "Well, how you been up there? Been too damn long since my baby came down to see me, I feel you like it better up there than down here with me." Her deflective laugh didn't hide her pain well and guilt started to swirl inside of Diamond.
The last time she visited home was the summer of last year. By then, she'd missed her mother's cooking. The smell of her house. Her room. The familiarity of the neighborhood, the people, and the candy lady five houses down who always offered pickled sausages and Gatorade for free whenever she caught Diamond jogging down the street. It's my investment, she'd say, it'll pay off once I see yo' little ass on my TV or else I'm collecting my dues.
Last year was the first time Diamond couldn't wait to come home. But she'd spent so much time away that she quickly remembered why she left.
There was no time reserved alone with her mother with court hearings every other week and the police driving by to ensure one of the kid's crazy ass daddy hadn't shown up once he escaped from jail. Once in the middle of some kid's birthday party, the kid's mother crashed it to kidnap her child who didn't recognize her from the amount of weight lost from drug abuse. Not to mention Diamond's room basically turned into a playpen, if not an extra room for the younger kids who'd rather sleep with her than in their own damn bed. Every chance presented to finally spend some quality time with her mother was ruined and her mother allowed it. Promises after promises, the next day after the next that one day, a day that never came, she'd have her undivided attention.
Diamond shivered from the memories, or it was the light breeze, and hugged herself closer to keep warm. "It's straight. It's cold up here." She leaned against the window of a closed antique shop, staring out toward a friend group recording stupid videos in the parking lot. "I had to invest in a real jacket, but I'm missing Florida's heat more and more."
"Bet your ass is cold. I can hear your teeth chattering through the phone." Her laughter was bright and warm again, the same as she first heard it as a baby. "Florida will get you right when you come down here for the summer."
Something Diamond was still contemplating.
"You can come early, you know? No need to wait for the summer. It's warm now. A little chilly in the morning but it heats up soon as it's noon."
"I will," Said Diamond with a little less enthusiasm. "Just been busy."
"You can't be busy all the time, Diamond." Her mother pointed out, mild concern lingering in her words as she kept the conversation light. "I don't even think that's good for the body to be pushing limits you haven't pushed. But," a breath filled the line, considering the problem at hand and how to go about it. "What the hell do I know? You know yourself better than I do. Always have."
Always have.
Diamond's nose wrinkled with disbelief and she rolled her eyes, more irritated than offended by a very known fact. It left such a bitter taste in her mouth that she laughed while shaking her head. Her mother laughed with her, not hearing the pain behind it or the reason for it.
Staying busy helped pass by time so she didn't have to sulk in the fact that she had no better plans going on. The friends she had were always doing their own thing and Diamond wasn't entitled to their time. But yes, she knew better than anyone, her mother included, that it wasn't good for her body yet it felt good at the same time.
"How's everything back home?" Diamond changed the subject quickly. "How many more kids are in my room? Can I still call it mine?"
"Diamond." Her mother said sternly, and she'd lifted her hands as if she saw her surrender.
"Just asking. Not even trying to be funny."
Her mother wasn't convinced that Diamond's question held good intentions and it made the two of them, but she answered it as if it did. "Everything's fine at home. Thomas got adopted. Little Lizzy got her situation figured out with the court so now her mother's best friend is her guardian. The twins still here, you know that. Lala turned one just a week ago. I might be getting a new mouth to feed in the upcoming weeks or so. His name is Austin. He's thirteen and autistic, so I've been reading up on how to care for autistic children to better his living experience until the court says otherwise."
None of these kids rang a bell aside from the twins and Lala. The twins, Royal and Rori, were infants when they arrived. They're four now. They were the only two Diamond exactly tolerated and cared for, given she was forced to babysit them on many nights and helped feed and bathe them. Even tied a rope around her waist connected to a cart with them inside so they could join her morning runs. If her mother hadn't adopted them by now—which wouldn't change much since they considered Diamond their sister and her mother theirs—she has the plans to eventually.
She just hoped the kid count remained low by the time summer came around.
"Sounds like a full house." Diamond commented. She didn't expect much to begin with.
"Always is, but I love it. I love these kids. Who else gone love them right if it ain't me?" Her breath hitched as her mother continued, and the smile on her face dropped. "They're my entire world, the reason I do what I do. I'm so proud of each one of them and all of their accomplishments achieved by my side. They're my greatest pride. If I could, I'd keep them with me forever."
Jealousy was a disease but it couldn't help but consume Diamond whole, and it embarrassed her. It's childish as hell to feel this way toward children who don't have a parental figure in their lives to properly love and guide them. Her mother truly wasn't a bad woman and Diamond's happy these kids have her to care for them, but wished she was better at keeping her words to herself. Even better at prioritizing her attention. When's the last time her mother said she loved her? When's the last time she was proud of her accomplishments? When's the last time she was once her greatest pride? Shit, she's the first and only in her family to go to college trying to make a name for herself and she can't even surpass kids nowhere near old enough to apply for their first job.
Words spoken out loud without regret and no filter, filled with pride and so much love to give, were the same words Diamond had to assume because with her mother, why say it when she supposedly already knows?
"You know, I've been training real good lately." It's petty to fight for her mother's acknowledgment, Diamond knew it was, but she honestly couldn't give a fuck. It's her mother too. Her job doesn't stop when she's out of the house. "Coach says there will be sponsors at future meets looking for their next rising star. And with the way my stats been looking, who knows, they might pick me."
A child crying in the background interrupted Diamond but she kept going.
"I could be in a Nike ad or on some red carpet interviewing only the greats the next time you see me. Maybe I—"
The cry grew louder and echoey that Diamond had to hold the phone away.
Her mother sighed. "Hold on."
There was some shuffling as her mother cursed to herself. Her voice getting further away was how Diamond knew she had left her phone behind, likely lying on the charger on her dresser covered with perfume and unopened mail. Kids started yelling in the background. Something about not sharing candy. One of the twins, Rumi, shifted the blame onto Royal who claimed otherwise. Her mother comforted Royal after telling them they shouldn't be up or having candy this late anyway. There was more shuffling, more muffled words shared, and then there was silence.
And more silence.
And even more silence.
Waiting for her mother's voice to return turned Diamond into a shivering mess. All this so she could blabber about her accomplishments for any crumb of acknowledgement. God, she was so pathetic. Hugging herself didn't work for long, nor did she have the patience and started searching for an Uber.
It was ten minutes away, currently dropping someone else off.
Moments later, a voice deep with exhaustion and much disappointment returned. "I am so sorry, Diamond. I was putting the twins back to bed, I forgot I was on the phone with you."
Each chuckle from her mother's lips dimmed the light that was once excited to share everything about her life going on out here. Drained like a waterfall until all the warmth ran cold and Diamond was left with the chilly breeze to comfort her. At most, remembered she was there too. She stared at the glowing screen, her fingers gripping the phone tight and her eyes tickling with tears blurring her vision.
"It's cool," Diamond said and it was eerily calm despite her clenched jaw. "You gotta go?"
"Yeah. Sorry, baby, I do. These kids always getting into some shit when they know they should be in bed asleep." She said. "But I'll call you tomorrow, alright? I wanna hear all about this track meet coming up and..."
"The sponsors." Diamond reminded.
"Mhm and all that good stuff you was just talking about then. I promise, okay?"
And she'd wait on it, as she always had, even when her mother never kept her word. "Okay."
"I know you hate when I worry too much but get home safely and get some rest."
The problem was that her mother never worried enough because Diamond never gave her a reason to. That was her fault, but it was equally shared. She wished her mother would let the twins hash it out so she'd stay longer on the phone. To care a little more about her biological child who was miles away from home, rather than reach out to her every couple of weeks in the dead of the night and hoped she was up to answer. To say how much she's been missed, and so proud of, and her reason of calling into motherhood.
Yet, instead of explaining what she wanted, Diamond just stared at the screen, allowing it to fester and rip her apart from the inside out. "I will." Her reply was merely a whisper, a shaky one. "I love you."
Just once more, would she try again, hopeful to bridge that nurturing connection...just to frustrate her even more when her mother stuck to their usual script.
"And you know I do—"
Diamond hung up.
She canceled the Uber and tossed her phone in her tote bag. After securing the strap with a tighter grip, two big jumps to warm up the muscles, she pushed off her feet and ran home. A ten-minute trip became an hour.
Running was Diamond's only outlet that helped clear her mind and dry her tears that continued to fall against her will. She never understood why she always got worked up over things she expected to happen, or why it hurts more when it actually did happen.
Renesmee wasn't home when Diamond finally arrived, not that she bothered to check and wished to avoid discussing their dispute. Didn't stop her roommate from texting her during her shift, hoping she got back safely and that she was sorry again and again.
Her feet dragged down the narrow hallway, drenched in sweat and burning all over, straight toward her room. Kicked her shoes off and tossed her bag somewhere into the dark. Only the glint of light bleeding through the blinds helped navigate across the floor cluttered with clothes. She collapsed face-first on her bed, letting herself sink into the mattress with a dragged groan. No care for outside clothes staining the sheets, or if the friction caused her braids to frizz up with no care for searching for her bonnet.
She lay like that for a while, staring at the dark wall until a strange burst of color swirled. Every muscle in her body ached, the hour-long run still thrumming through her legs and seizing her lungs of oxygen.
Yet, the feeling was nice. Comforting.
But it didn't clear her mind completely. It instead traveled down her body to the center of her chest where it carved a hole deep enough to jump in. Diamond couldn't explain the feeling but she'd never felt so empty, so cold, so alone, longing for something or someone to fill it.
It kept her up the entire night, tossing and turning and crying out in frustration. It fed off her. It took pleasure draining her of everything she never had to keep her from having it.
"Why am I always paying the price? Do you hate me, God?" A delirious laughter echoed off the walls and pulled at her braids that wrapped themselves around her neck from all the turning. "Why does it hurt so fucking much? Why won't it stop? Why can't I have just one peaceful fucking night?" She screamed out to the void. "Leave me alone—just leave me the fuck alone and let me sleep!"
She wrapped her arms around herself, her nails digging into her chest, but it never stopped. It was needy and it ached for a cure she didn't have.
"Fuck," she burst into tears, no energy to give. "Please." She begged whatever God who'd listen. "Please. Please. Please."
Diamond cried out everything that she'd been holding onto. Hopefully it'd be enough to set her free.
Notes:
— poor Diamond. First her mom and now she's already feeling the effects being so far away from Seth and doesn't even know what it is. Hate her suffering cause she truly needs a hug, but I'm excited for the next couple of chapters. Cause if you think she's' the only one feeling it then you're wrong.

Chapter Seven | So You Called And I Answered
𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 11, 2024
𝗦𝗘𝗧𝗛'𝗦 𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗗𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣 her baby move into Simone’s apartment. She was already at the house packing with Charlie the second he returned yesterday from dropping off Diamond. It didn’t take long considering all the clothes he ripped shifting and forgot to replace. He made sure his collection was neatly stacked in a small box, his game system back in its original box, and all his computer monitors were covered and packed without a scratch.
They spent the entire night planning out his life in Seattle while Charlie was knocked out on the living room couch after doing pretty much nothing. The most help offered was cracking open two beers to celebrate this moment with Seth, which he didn’t completely understand nor wished to. Seth thought it was ignorant to marry into a Native household and refuse to learn about their heritage and all that made them up. The awkward White guy sitting confused with a plate filled at every potlatch. But he’s who his mother wanted at the end of the day. Beer also wasn’t his thing but finished it to bond with Charlie.
It was decided to head out the next day, bright and early in the morning. Seth had already spent far too long without Diamond; he was now feeling the effects of it.
He couldn’t sleep last night.
No matter how many times he counted sheep, consumed herbal tea, kept his eyes closed, begged into the abyss—he couldn’t sleep. Instead, an ache pinged at the center of his chest. Thinking of nothing else but Diamond had him going crazy trying to remember her smell, her face, her voice, her smile, those beautiful brown eyes. But not as crazy as this distant feeling that he was needed. Like Diamond needed him.
It’s impossible to fathom since she hadn’t shown any interest in Seth nor had he given her a reason to, but he couldn’t deny this gut feeling. Twisting and screaming at him to phase out and run back to Seattle to be with her or nearby. He figured out how to stay put, gripping the mattress like his life depended on it and taking deep breaths to keep his wolf contained. He knew it wouldn’t last long.
Exactly why he couldn’t wait another day.
Seth parked in the designated garage on the fifth floor of Simone’s apartment building called ‘Luxury Reign’. His mom carried the lightest bags, leaving Seth to carry the heavy boxes.
“Don’t forget to lock the doors.” Said his mom, slinging her dark green purse with tribal stitches along the frontside over her shoulder to pick up two duffel bags. “We don’t know this area. The city’s filled with thieves and scammers lurking about. Just yesterday, I saw on the news that over ten cars have been broken into. I mean, this jeep isn’t worth much anyway, but I can’t have my baby offering his imprint piggy-back rides.”
Seth highly doubted Diamond would be into it even if he offered.
“That’s what you’ve been doing all night?”
He recalled hearing multiple news channels and played videos last night, thinking there had been another vampire attack. At least back home there hasn’t been any, but the same couldn’t be said about Seattle. There’s been reports across the city of suspicious deaths ruled out as an animal attack or suicide.
His mom snatched the car keys Seth almost pocketed as he stacked a box on top of another to carry. The weight was nothing to him.
“Don’t judge me. I need to know what’s going on up here.” She said with a playful pout, though she was very much concerned. Then locked the doors after Seth used his foot to shut it. “With you no longer at the rez within reach of the pack leaves you and Diamond vulnerable to vampire attacks.”
“I will protect us both,” Seth promised without a stutter. “My scent alone is enough to scare away vampires. It’s my best advantage.”
Seth’s been secretly plotting countless ways to drench Diamond in his scent, to brand her completely so that any vampire or any other unknown species who crossed her path would know she was his. Off fucking limits. That was… if she’d ever allow him close enough to act on his primal instincts.
Until then, he’ll patiently wait until she’s suddenly cold and on the verge of—feeling like—death before he offers his body as her personal heater. Or maybe he could accidentally spill something so he could proudly offer the clothes off his back. Or maybe he could sneak into her dorm and plant his clothes somewhere in her room for her to lounge around in. Or maybe he should start touching everything she owned when she wasn’t looking?
Standing close to her wasn’t satisfying his wolf. The car ride helped but that was only temporary because Diamond could easily wash him off.
And he didn’t like that. She needed to smell like him 24/7 and that was that.
Seth held out his arm to stop his mom so a car could pass by, and they continued their travel across the garage toward the building door.
“I know you’ll protect her and yourself. I’m just scared I guess. Projecting really.” His mom admitted and the stress between her brows deepened. “My baby is a man now. Imprinted, moving out the house, attending a big university all in two nights. I’m still processing everything. Selfishly finding ways to bring you back home with me.”
So was Seth. The processing part. It felt like yesterday when he imprinted and wished he could relive that night again. Kiss her again. Feel the attempt of her slap again.
But he was doing big things now. Things even Embry couldn’t have predicted, and hoped it was enough for Diamond to accept him.
Seth chuckled. “You speak as if I’m moving out the country, off to fight a White man’s war.”
“What’s the difference? You’re not home.”
She stopped when Seth squatted to gently set down his boxes, likely thinking something had happened to him by how quickly she rushed to check on him. As soon as she was within range, Seth pulled her into a hug, resting his chin on top of her long black hair with one side pinned behind her ear, showing off the beaded earrings she made. She hugged him back with the bags weighing her arms.
“I’ll be fine, I promise,” Seth assured. “I’ll call and visit as much as I can. Lock every door, window, and whatever else. I’ll keep the vampires away from Diamond so you can meet her all in one piece.”
She kissed her lips and slapped his chest with playful hits, pulling out of his strong hold. “You wolves are always thinking about your imprint. I know you’ll protect her. That I don’t doubt.” She then tussled his curly mess as she’d always done since he was little. “But while you protect her, let me protect you.”
Even though Seth’s mother wasn’t physically strong enough to protect him like he could everyone else, he agreed. Keeping her happy was better than leaving her constantly worried about him. He knew her inside and out. She would stay longer than a few days, move in even, if it meant she could keep a close eye on him. She didn’t see this flesh-eating, three-hundred-pound-plus vicious wolf when looking at him; she saw her son, her little boy, her youngest baby.
The boy who’d always volunteer around the reservation, open to learn and listen to any and every story to pass down. The boy who’d always collect plants and treat sick animals, even set up his own healing station in the backyard. The boy who stayed outside more than he ever did in his own bed, and who’d spend hours playing games when forced inside to live as every normal kid had.
Seth would never admit it but he loved the way his mother looked at him. Sometimes he needed a reminder that while all this supernatural bullshit went on in the world and he’s off fighting endless wars and internal ones, that sometimes he was just a kid. Someone’s little boy. Son. Not anymore a kid, but he’d always be someone’s son.
“Okay,” Seth agreed with a knowing smile. “I can do that.”
She accepted his answer and suggested they continue before the bags numbed her arms. Seth offered to carry them, but she resisted and insisted on helping to prove she wasn’t completely helpless.
A short White woman in baby pink tight-fitted workout clothes and her blonde curls pinned back with a bright pink headband, exited the same door they were entering. The instant scent of strawberry shortcake filled Seth’s nose. The fluffy Pomeranian, clutched against her chest in a pink dress and bow, growled at Seth. She scooted by with a quick apology and held open the door to let them through, but her lingering gaze burned against Seth’s face.
“Must be new to the area,” she leaned against the door, chewing the gloss off her awkward-looking plum bottom lip.
Seth spared her a quick glance, too busy making sure his mom wasn’t breaking her back carrying his bags and that there was enough space for his boxes to fit through the narrow door.
“I am.” He replied politely. It’d be awkward if he didn’t by how close they were now.
Her lip made a popping sound as her teeth released her bottom lip, pulling into a flirty smile. “That explains why I haven’t seen you around and why I hope to see you more often.”
She gave the little dog—Coco, she called it—a gentle shake while shushing her but her growling was persistent. An embarrassed smile tugged her lips as she pushed back her blonde curls.
“Sorry. She usually isn’t like this unless you’re a bird or a squirrel. Or my ex.” Her laughter was nervous and awkward, still fighting to shush her dog. “She’s the one running away from people, you know.”
“I tend to have that effect on small dogs.”
Seth got along with big dogs well. It’s the small ones that acted out so he’s gotten used to their defensive reaction. They’re usually all talk but no action anyway. One good growl from his chest and they skurry off.
The woman shifted closer in a way that blocked Seth from fitting the rest of the boxes and himself through the door. Her strawberry shortcake perfume invaded his nostrils full force. “Since you’re on my floor that practically makes up neighbors. I’m Loraine.” She stretched her hand, a silver charm bracelet dangling on her wrist, her nails sharp and painted pastel pink.
Diamond’s were almond-shaped. A natural creamy, light brown color with gold and dark brown designs. One finger had a flower. Another was covered in Cheetah print. Most were gold designs that made the color pop. She wasn’t wearing bracelets during the car ride but had noticed from her Instagram account—discovered from shamelessly stalking through Kimi’s followers and tags—she liked to wear a variety of gold bangles.
She wasn’t the woman who went outside looking like whatever. She cared about her appearance; the way her hair was done, the style of her nails, the jewelry she wore, and most importantly, the clothes she wore. Her style was nothing like the women in his life aside from his cousins and Nes. Almost everything she wore was tight-fitted, short, and exposed in certain areas which made sense being from Florida. Not that Seth was complaining because he wasn’t, it excited him a lot.
He also didn’t realize he’d been lost in his thoughts thinking about Diamond until the woman, Luran or something, cleared her throat impatiently awaiting his introduction. Crazy to think he’d found a reason to think about her, not that she ever left his mind to begin with.
Seth couldn’t take her offered hand and tipped his head instead. “Seth.” He politely introduced himself.
“Seth.” She repeated his name nice and slow, almost seductive as her green eyes sized him down. “Just so you know, I’m in room 511 if you ever need to borrow sugar or an egg. My pantries are never empty, so be sure to keep me on your mind whenever you run out of anything.”
“That’s…” the crease between his brows deepened, confused why they were suddenly talking about food. “Good to know. Thank you.”
“Of course.”
The longer she kept Seth hostage, the longer he was convinced a different vibe was taking place. One he didn’t know how to navigate out of without being rude. Lora or something with an L, was a pretty woman subjectively speaking, and certainly older, but she wasn’t his type. Even if he did have one, she wasn’t Diamond. She didn’t look like her. Smelt like her. Sounded like her. Nor acted like her.
It could explain how his brain ignored every obvious flirting attempt because his wolf just knew it’d never be reciprocated, so why waste the energy?
Just when his mouth opened to completely shut down whatever was happening, Seth’s mom ducked under and squeezed through the door, pushing the woman away. Her hand reached for his shoulder and yanked him and the boxes through the door. He’d almost lost his balance if he hadn’t caught himself.
“He’s taken.” She announced so loud that the garage carried her voice.
The woman—it’s Lora, he confidently thought—got the message and walked away.
She kissed her lips. “Not even your first day here and you’re already getting hit on by a woman twice your age? And you’re just letting it happen?”
Seth’s lips parted, stunned at her accusation. “I wasn’t letting it happen.”
“You sure weren't doing anything to stop it.”
“What could I do? I was being polite. I barely knew what was happening until it did.”
She fixed him a look, tilting her head with her lips pressed. “You’re such an intelligent boy but you can be dense at times. Just say you’re taken and leave it at that.” A long sigh left her throat high and dry as she continued. “It’s my fault my ancestors did the heavy lifting that I produced a carbon copy son. You should’ve seen how many boys were on me back in the day, your father barely could keep up. He’d always tape my favorite flower on the front of his uniform shirt or somewhere on his backpack so he’d stand out. He always did without trying. He was the first who caught my attention…”
She trailed off when the emotions grew thick in her throat. Now staring down at their initials tattooed small against the back of her hand. Just rubbing it gently, almost like she was afraid it’d wipe off.
The pain in her voice whenever she spoke of Seth’s father never overpowered the love and joy expressed for the time he lived; it always felt as if he never left. The memories his parents shared were held close to his heart. It was best to remember that than the day he died and the reason behind his death.
“Anyway,” She shook her head, forcing a smile to convince her mind she was strong. The bags were back on her shoulder as she led the way. “Let’s find this apartment so I can relax. These bags are killing my shoulders. What did you pack in here? Bricks?”
“I told you I could’ve carried them but you insisted.” Seth grumbled.
“I know what I said. Don’t remind me of my poor decisions.”
The kitchen and living room greeted them upon entry. It was nicely spaced and decorated for someone who occasionally spent their time here. There’s also a small patio with a small table and chair, perfect for breakfast outside. On the left was the bathroom that connected to the master bedroom. There’s a few printed pictures of Leah and Simone on the bedside dresser and the desk set in the corner of the room. A walk-in closet with not enough clothes and shoes to fill it, an area his mom already planned to store a couple of her things.
It wasn’t a bad first place at all. He can work with this.
Seth placed the boxes in the bedroom and found his mom lighting a cedar. All of the bags that numbed her arms were on the circular dining table.
He didn’t have to question what she was doing because he knew. She wanted not only to cleanse and protect the place, but to greet the lost spirits once occupied by Mother Nature, animals, and trees who’ve died for this building, and ask they welcome their presence to live in unity. His mother worked hard as a preserver of the Quileute culture and taught in the local tribal school that taught kids their stories, languages, skills, beliefs, and more. Animism was one of those beliefs that all living things have a spirit. Including things that have died centuries ago, so his mother believed.
She forced a burning cedar in Seth’s hand to help make their introductions and did so without any complaint. She took one side of the place, he took the other. Then they switched sides and met back in the living room. Once the apartment was blessed, cleansed, and the spirits were properly greeted or forced out, was Seth able to continue grabbing the rest of his stuff from the car. His mom occupied herself by checking under cabinets for cleaning supplies to reclean the place from top to bottom. Since it hadn’t been lived in for a while until necessary who knew how much dust particles they were inhaling.
Seth planted himself on the wooden floor of the living room and started unpacking the nearest box that held his valuables. Including the noise-canceling headphones Leah gifted that he was eager to wear. The city truly was an endless stream of sound. From the corner of his eye, his mother jerked back followed by a tight-aired gasp. He was already on his feet in the kitchen at his mother’s side before he could process anything.
“What?” He scanned her body and listened closely for any internal injuries, specifically her heart that was thudding in his ears. “What’s going on? Are you okay? Should I call 9-1-1?”
She fixed him with a look, just as confused as he was. “Call them for what? I just came up with the best idea! You should invite Diamond over for dinner tonight. I can fix her favorite foods and we can chat over athletic stuff. What’s her player number? Do you think it’s too early to get custom shirts made that we can wear at her track meets?”
Seth’s shoulders fell with disbelief. Here he thought his mother was in need of immediate help, but she was just planning for the future as always. “Mom, no.” He paused, considering part of her idea. “The custom shirt idea I like—”
“I know! It just came to me.”
“—But I’m not inviting her over for dinner. I don’t have her number for one. And two, we’re not on that level to just call each other up and hang out on a whim. And three, you’ll just embarrass me with childhood photos and stories that I’d like to bury with my death.”
“Of course I’ll embarrass you. I’m your mother. That’s what we do.”
Seth walked away, back to the living room. “If you love me, you’ll burn those photos.” He plopped down in the same spot and continued unpacking his boxes.
“You can’t just,” she pulled a clorox wipe free from the container, tossed the dirty one out, and continued wiping down the counters. “Ask Renesmee to ask Diamond to come over? And you know, Nes is more than welcome, and I’m sure her presence would make it less awkward for Diamond. She can validate some of my stories too.”
“It’s been three days, mom.” Seth pointed out. “I promise you’ll meet her. Just not tonight.”
She rolled her eyes with a playful pout, muttering words he heard clear as day.
Seth would love to have Diamond over for dinner to meet his mom. He’d never pass up an opportunity to be with her, but they were still considered strangers despite the imprint that was technically one-sided. She’d only just forgiven him. And while that opened a door for him to redeem himself, Seth knew it didn’t automatically make them friends.
To be honest, he was still unsure where he fit in the picture. After their conversation during the car ride, one thing was certain—Diamond wasn’t looking for love. Nor a friend. Yet, there was this conflicting intuition that felt she was lying about what she wanted while also telling the truth. She was looking for something more whether that be a friendship or an intimate relationship. She even wanted it more than she was letting on, but probably convinced herself it wasn’t something she deserved or needed right now. Someone probably convinced her otherwise.
Seth would never force her to choose, nor would he ever push Diamond to love him even if it left him lingering between blurred lines. He’d gladly stay there until she figured it out, but that didn’t mean he would give up. No, he’ll continue fighting for her attention, trust, and her love in any form offered. So for right now, it’s smart he doesn’t push his luck and let it play out.
Most of the boxes were unpacked and in need of a permanent home that wasn’t the couch he’d be sleeping on so his mom could take the bed, but decided to unpack his clothes in the room. They were the easiest to put up. Still on the floor while his mom changed out the sheets.
“You know, I just realized Valentine’s Day is in three days. Charlie and I will probably go out for dinner and binge-watch Law & Order. Same old, same old.” Said his mother while shoving the pillows into brand new pillowcases to complement the knitted comforter that showcased the Quileute skills. “But I wanna know what plans you have with your imprint?”
Seth gave a smug shrug. He failed to hide his blushing smile on the day he had marked in his phone. “I want to give Diamond something meaningful. An introduction to myself and our culture but make it—” he dramatically motioned his hands before him. “—romantic.”
She flashed him a raised brow. “You’re still taking her on a date, right?”
His lips pursed and his head tilted toward his mother. “What kind of man do you think you raised? Of course, I’m taking her on a date.” Seth couldn’t believe that was even a question she had to ask on the biggest romantic holiday in the world. “I mean, I really want to if she’ll accept the invitation.”
“What were you thinking?”
He knew she was asking about the gifts rather than the date itself. “Beadwork? I don’t know, I’m thinking I can make her a necklace or a bracelet—no, a matching set with very specific colors that represent her best.” He listed off while placing his folded clothes in the empty dresser. “Maybe woven her a tote bag, something big enough to carry her track equipment. I noticed she carries that than small purses.”
Seth’s mother was holding the stack of folded clothes he turned to grab. Her hand reached for his face, caressing his cheek with a loving look. “That’s a beautiful idea, but honey, your beadwork isn’t the best. It’ll fall off the second it’s on her neck. Don’t even get me started on your weaving skills.” She gave his cheek three gentle taps and laughed at his ambitious plan. The third tap met air when Seth stepped back.
He took the clothes from her hands, placed them in the dresser, and walked around her to grab the other stack. He couldn’t even get mad at her because it’s true. The last necklace he made unraveled as he was working on it and it’s been months since he attempted to weave anything. He was good at carving though he doubted Diamond would appreciate a piece of wood.
Still laughing, “Why don’t you leave the beadwork to me? Give me your idea and I’ll make it.”
“It won’t be meaningful if my mom makes it.”
Her laughter stopped and her head jerked offensively. “It’ll be meaningful regardless of who makes it. You think women are complaining about year-round heart chocolates and bears made in a manufactured factory? Every one of them has the same four-colored bear collecting dust in their closets, and only one woman will be wearing your necklace and bracelet.”
It didn’t sound all that bad when she put it that way. God knows he needed the help if he wanted everything done before then.
“You can help me if you like.” She offered. “Learn along my side, offer you input, pass me the beads, keep me company. You can say you made it if it makes you feel any better.”
Seth sighed heavily. “I can’t take your credit, mom.”
“I don’t mind.”
“I do. You know I do. I’d never take credit for something I didn’t make, especially when it comes to your beadwork.” She knew that which was why she didn’t offer again. Seth scooted closer, an innocent look on his face as he asked, “You’ll help with the bag too, right?”
She pushed at his forehead and Seth scattered back on his own volition since she wasn’t strong enough to, his laughter warm in his chest. “God no. You’re on your own with that one. Either you go to the shops or pay Maranda a visit, and you know she’ll charge double the price on short notice. No, no, no. That will take me longer than the jewelry, which I think is romantic enough. Save the bag for later.”
“You think so?”
“I do. It’s a beautiful romantic gesture. Diamond will appreciate the effort to welcome her to our world. You get your romantic thinking from me—”
Seth kissed his lips. “Here we go again. Last time you said it was from dad, now it’s you. Which is it?”
“It’s whatever I say it is.” She said. “Why don’t you hurry and unpack your clothes since you're in a loving mood tonight. I’ll go start on dinner after I call Simone and let her know we got here safely.”
And Seth did.
He unpacked all of his boxes and bags, helped his mom redecorate the place until he made it his. Simone actually called first to check in and see if moving in went smoothly, Leah somewhere in the background making her wife giggle. She wished Seth the best and made him promise to update her about everything that happens regarding the pack and the imprint situation. Kimi even came over for dinner to eat her heart full once she heard his mom was over, and left with plates to go.
That night, lying on the couch in the dark, it happened again. That achy pull in his chest that Seth was needed. It called him outside to follow whatever it was. He knew that if he didn’t the consequences would be devastating.
So he pushed up from the couch, already searching for a shirt and hoodie to throw on and sandals to slide on. The hoodie was so he didn’t look out of place. Collecting his thick hair sweating against his neck, he tied it back with the rubber band around his wrist. He was careful not to wake his mom and grabbed the key card, the keys to his car, and the noise-canceling headphones off the table before heading out.

Chapter Eight | The Company Of A Wolf
𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 12, 2024
𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘, 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗙𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗧. Behind the cushion of his noise-canceling headphones, Seth could appreciate the beauty and chaotic nature of Seattle Downtown. Everything was compacted and filled with too many cars and people, slugging drunk out of establishments and constantly pushing past Seth or seeking his attention for money and pointless conversations. A range of mostly unpleasant scents filled his nose, the stale air constricting his lungs from the air he was once used to.
Too many lights and ads to keep up. Too many people to move. Too many buildings to breathe. He was overwhelmed enough and knew if he didn't have the noise-canceling headphones on hand, he would've moved back home or stayed indoors forever.
Seth kept his head down, his hands shoved in the pockets of his hoodie, walking aimlessly along the pavement of the lively city. He had no clue where he was going or why he was even out here in the first place. Whatever tugging at his chest like a thread, Seth surrendered to its pull. He trusted it to lead him where he was meant to be.
The last time he felt this way was moments before he imprinted. Though this time it was more intense, painful even.
A familiar scent jolted through Seth, sparking him alive like a sudden bolt of lightning. He knew instantly it was Diamond. His head lifted in search of her. From how prominent it was she couldn't have been far, but there were too many objects to locate her with vision alone so he did what he was best at and tracked her scent.
A sweet tang made itself known the closer he was and couldn't help the reaction it begged out of him. His breathing grew deep and heavy. His mouth watered. Blood rushed to fill the space in his sweats. It was a smell that brought out something primal and it drove him crazy.
Finally, there, inside a small Cuban sandwich restaurant, sitting far left near the wall was Diamond.
She sat still, slouched with her legs parted. Her elbows resting against the table's edge, fidgeting with a piece of roasted bread pulled from her half-eaten sandwich. She wore what looked like lavender-colored yoga pants with a matching jacket, not suited for the chilly weather for someone who wasn't well-adjusted like him and wasn't from the North. The sports bra peeking from the zipper was baby blue. Her braids were pulled back in a ponytail with a few hanging pieces.
She just stared at the table, unblinking and inhumanly still.
Seth wasn't prepared for the rush of sound that hit him when he removed his headphones. He pushed through it and rushed across the street toward the restaurant.
"Diamond?" He called, his voice soft and cautious.
She jolted from the intrusion and her head snapped up at the call. "Oh, hey, it's you." Her greetings were eerily calm, some of her words raspy and dragged into a whisper as if she was using every last breath to speak.
Seth's brows knitted, noting how she seemed here but not here at the same time. He expected some disdain. Maybe an eye roll, a hard stare, a lip curl, silence, anything he was used to than...this. A normal response.
"It's me." He confirmed with a nod.
Silence, which he expected, filled the air. Her empty gaze drifted from him, back to the table. The piece of bread was still occupied between her fingers
"Can I join you?" Seth asked.
"I don't care."
He filled the empty seat across from her in a flash and placed the headphones on the table near the salt and pepper tray. Silence followed again and it was welcomed.
He just sat there, regarding her a moment longer before asking, "what you doing downtown?"
"Went out for a jog and sort of wandered here from campus." She said, still staring out into nothing.
Seattle Downtown from campus was over half an hour walking—a fact he'd just checked to confirm. Maybe an hour at most jogging, if accounting for her speed. But it was still too long for Seth to accept.
"How long you been out here jogging?"
She yawned with a shrug. "Long time."
"How long is long?"
"Long enough to watch the sun rise and fall."
Seth's posture faltered, his jaw dropping in sheer astonishment at her words. That couldn't be healthy. Running all day literally from sunup to sundown was insane, even for him who had the stamina for it. What the hell was she thinking? She could've injured herself! Her career and all her efforts could've disappeared just like that.
No wonder she's out of it—her body was catching up to her. Slowly but surely, it'd shut down. The bags under her fluttering eyes grew heavy, each word filled with a yawn or a breathless breath.
A stressful hand slid over his head, too stunned to speak. Seth couldn't bring himself to scold her no matter how much he felt she deserved some sense knocked into her. His wolf certainly had a few words to share. But it didn't matter because what's done was done. What mattered now was keeping her hydrated. The pink steel-made water bottle on the table seemed empty. And even then, it wasn't enough to hydrate her the entire day.
Seth pushed the half-filled glass of water closer to Diamond. "Drink this for me. All of it, please." He softly demanded.
She refused the drink. Her reply was an incoherent mumble. Judging by how quickly her raised arms dropped with the cutest pout ever to witness, Seth realized she simply didn't want to hold it because it was too heavy. She was comfortable in her slouched position. So he stood while grabbing the water and sat beside her, the sweet tang more prominent than before. He ignored those urges and how excited everything about her made him. Now wasn't the time. Not when he was needed.
He lifted the straw to her lips, watching every drop disappear. Whenever she stopped, the straw would purposefully nudge a little further between her lips so she had no choice but to keep drinking. It satisfied Seth very much to take care of his imprint, surprised she allowed it courtesy of her unfortunate exhaustion.
She shivered beneath his finger trailing a braid behind her ear, her skin soft but cold.
Like before—which couldn't be helped because his emotions were on a high and his thoughts were all over the place—Seth bombarded Diamond with too many questions while she was in no position to answer him immediately. "Do you need—no, I'm driving you back. I'm not letting you walk home or anywhere out of my sight." Seth decided for her and continued with his questions. "Are you hungry? Cold? Do you need more water?—I should get more water. But are you injured? I don't sense anything external, but I can't be sure internally. Your heart sounds fine though, slower than usual. What percent is your battery? I forgot to bring my phone and I don't have a charger on me, but I'll ask the cashier if they have one we can b—"
Diamond drew back from the straw, completely turning her face to signal she was finished. Seth didn't push her this time to finish the little bit left. She did well enough. He also realized the sweet tang lingered from her sweat that she wiped from her neck and accidentally touched the back of Seth's hand with. It took everything not to prove her point by inhaling it at a closer range. Didn't even know a reaction like this from something so unexpected was possible.
"Don't be dramatic." A big yawn escaped as her arms stretched back over her head. "This isn't my first time."
"I'm concerned." Seth corrected. "You've been running yourself to the ground and that's not nothing. I don't even think that's healthy."
"You don't get it."
"I'm listening."
He scooted closer, their knees practically touching. His attention was hers to have, his ears were open to any and everything she'd share with him. He wanted to know everything there was about her even if it was just a cry.
Diamond tugged her bottom lip between her teeth, unsure where to start or if she even wanted to, but allowed her words to take over before her mind. "I gotta build up the endurance, you know? Get ahead of the game. Move fast. Impress sponsors. Impress coach. Good grades 'cause I'm not stuck like my mama. I won't, you know? She...she makes it so damn hard to live up to her—their fucking potential. I have to be good enough. Perfect." She sniffled, but there weren't any tears when Seth checked. Not yet. "And I waited, you know? Knew what to expect and I still waited all damn day like an idiot."
"You're not an idiot."
"I am. A pathetic fucking idiot."
Seth didn't see that when he saw her and wished she saw the same too. Obviously, he doesn't know much about her yet to see those views through her eyes, and wasn't discouraged by it because he knew soon enough he'd be able to understand why. So he listened as he promised.
His brows furrowed and he listened to Diamond's heart again when her fingers rubbed along the area with a strained expression like something bothered her. "This fucking ache almost took me out. Couldn't sleep 'cause of it and now it magically disappears."
So the ache wasn't one-sided after all?
The concept of imprinting had always confused Seth. Not the cause of it but the technicality of it. There was never a definite answer to how the imprint infected those involved, and it seemed different with every relationship. Once the ancestors chose who'd take on the responsibility of a wolf, it's been said since that moment that the imprint was one-sided. And yet, there was always this pull, this ache, this need to be near each other without realizing it. Even the elders have said the imprint heed no law but its own.
It's unpredictable. It quite literally spawned out of nowhere with theorized stories to make sense of it.
"I hate it," Diamond mumbled. "I hate them. This. I hate it all, you know?"
Seth nodded. "I know, and I'm sorry things haven't been going your way. You've been suffering without me and because of me and I'm so sorry about that."
Though Seth could put together pieces of Diamond's rambling, he truly had no idea what she was going on about. Most of it was random gibberish, lots of resentment toward anything that plagued her mind. He didn't question, judge, or pity her thoughts; he simply listened to her nonsense and agreed to any and everything that sought his validation. She even sang at one point. Just a line or two of some Pop song he's heard played in many stores.
This side of her was cute just as much as it was concerning. She's trying her hardest to stay awake. The weak chuckle barely passed her lips as a random thought crossed her mind, still staring at the piece of bread between her fingers.
"What are you doing here?" Was the first coherent question—sentence in general—out her mouth.
"I live around here. Moved in earlier today. Couldn't sleep so I went out for a walk to see what's around."
Partially true but not entirely a lie. It wasn't like he could exactly say an unexplainable intuition led him to her from the exact needy ache that tormented them. Not without having to reveal he's a werewolf who imprinted on Diamond. It wasn't how he planned to go about it so late at night with her mind barely present, so he twisted the truth. That way he didn't feel horrible about lying to her.
She hummed and her eyes fluttered ever so slightly. The last flutter made her head heavy. Seth was quick to catch her but she'd noticed something on the table that lifted itself before contact was made.
"Headphones?"
"Noise-canceling headphones." Seth confirmed.
"You're on the spectrum? My mom would looove you."
Seth nearly choked on his spit at her question. The first half was genuinely curious while the second half was sarcastic with a bitter bite to it.
"No, no I'm not. Not that I know of." He laughed at the suddenness of it all. "Just not used to the city life and find it overwhelming compared to the rez."
She looked away. "Right." She said like she knew all along.
Still, she kept fighting sleep.
"I can see you're tired, yeah?"
A weak hand rubbed her eyes. "Yeah."
Seth couldn't tell if she was agreeing with him or just saying words just cause, but he rolled with it. "You ready to go? I think we should go and get you in bed." He grabbed her empty water bottle and stood. "Stay here. I'll refill your bottle and get a box for your food."
Diamond tugged on his hoodie, stopping him from his trip to refocus his attention she already had. He immediately sat back down.
Seth's head tilted, assessing her once more in case he missed something. "What's wrong?"
"I forgot. I owe you food I think."
He was quick to grab her hand, stopping her from digging in her phone case for her card that was seconds from slipping out. Her skin was still soft but freezing cold so he brought her hands together between his, rubbing gently to coax warmth back into them. She flinched at his touch, at the questionable heat radiating off him. But she didn't question it or his actions and watched quietly as he blew warm breath between the slit of her hands before rubbing them again.
"You owe me nothing." Seth shuts down immediately. "All I want is to take care of you. That makes me happy."
The tips of his ears warmed when that slipped out of his mouth. It was the truth. It was in his nature as a wolf to find satisfaction with completed tasks and given tasks. It was him as a person too. Seth loved helping those around him with all he had even if he had nothing to give. He always found a way. It made him worthy of their time, important, when people accepted his help. So the fact that Diamond accepted his warmth, given the circumstances, meant everything to him. He had to bite his lip to keep from foolishly grinning.
She seemed out of it to acknowledge anything that was just said when Seth met her heavy eyes. He didn't want to let go of her hands but he needed to get her home. It's past two in the morning.
"Stay here. I'll be right back." He pressed against her thawed-out hands once more before he let go and did what he had to do.
Diamond said nothing again.
Seth refilled her water bottle and grabbed a box for her food, but she was gone when he returned. So was his noise-canceling headphones. The only thing left of her was a debit card.
Notes:
— slightly changed the idea of them phasing into wolves because of vampires and more so just something that's been around long before them. Maybe a rare gift bestowed from their ancestors or whoever above to protect the people against colonizers of all kinds, or something more to do within the culture and not exactly the cause of something. Idk. Just writing it as I go.
— I know it's not as believable that Diamond is suffering from extreme exhaustion bc her speech isn't all crazy. I felt it'd be too distracting like some writers writing a child talking babyish, and did my best to portray that in other ways. ALSO thought it was fun to emphasize Seth's heightened senses on another level especially with the sweat situation. IYKYK
— Renessme is going by 'Nes' in narrative now. Her name is the only name I spell wrong EVERYTIME and it takes up too much time going back to make sure I spelled it correctly. I'm also lazy.

Chapter Nine | Is What You Need
𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 12, 2024
𝗔 𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗗 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗔𝗡 𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗗 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗢𝗔𝗧. "Fuck, Diamond."
After placing her card in his pocket, Seth rushed to pack her food and was out the door within seconds, chasing after her scent. But to his surprise, he didn't expect Alice to greet him at the door. Bright-eyed, wide smile, her pixie-cut shorter than last time. She loved a good scarf looped around her neck paired with a leather jacket. Her ankle-length pleated skirt was layered with belts, chains, and black stockings, all of which were paired with low-heeled boots.
"Gosh! You two are just too cute together!" Alice practically sang, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Still glancing over her shoulder for any sign of Diamond, "Alice? What are you doing here?"
She tilted her head, a knowing smile curved her lips like she already knew something. "Don't worry, you'll catch up to her."
That calmed Seth but not entirely. If Diamond wasn't within his vicinity, then she was in trouble.
"Anyway, I came to bring you this," a thick folder revealed itself from behind Alice's back. U.W. was printed in bold letters across the front. "Everything you need is inside—class schedules, maps, grade portals, professors' contacts. I see you've already found residency, but the tuition is taken care of. Wildlife Biologists is a fitting major. All you have to do is keep that GPA up and make it to graduation."
Seth took the folder, stunned. "Did Nes come to you?"
"Late per usual. Either you would've eventually called Edward once you got over the fact you needed the help, or Nes would've asked. So I took matters into my own hands and dealt with it once the decision was made."
"Thank you for this. Really."
Alice waved him off. "Thank me by stopping by the house. I think Edward misses you. Esme certainly does."
"I miss her cooking." Seth promised.
"That's the part she misses: having someone else to cook for. Nes is a picky eater, but you eat everything. Feeding the shelter keeps her occupied but they're not you." Alice teased with a laugh. "You should invite Diamond over. She has a great sense of fashion so we'd get along well."
Something protective waved over Seth, unable to picture the idea of leaving his imprint with a house of vampires. Vampires he trusted with his own life and fought alongside them. But for whatever unexplainable reason, didn't trust them with Diamond's life. Nes was half-vampire so the human part kept him reassured, plus he literally watched her grow into a woman from an infant. The same couldn't be said about the rest of the Cullens. It left a disgusted taste in his mouth being against something for the first time, which only applied to Diamond.
"I don't know. She doesn't even know about me yet and I wanna be the first to introduce her to that world in my way." Seth, in his own way, declined. He swallowed the guilt that followed.
"It's not like we haven't pretended to be human before, but I get it. Wolf business." Alice quoted with her fingers. "You're still free to stop by whenever you find time. We're in Laurelhurst—the address is in the back of the folder in case you get lost. I might even tell you where your actual, consensual first kiss with Diamond will take place if you do. Soft spoiler, it's her decision."
Seth perked at that, now unable to contain his growing smile. He very much wanted to know where it'd take place and was seconds from asking, but had to stop himself from ruining the surprise. Knowing himself, he'd rush for that day to come and ultimately ruin everything. He just couldn't believe it's her decision. Somewhere in the near future, Diamond would see him more than some perverted creep, but a man she'll love enough to kiss him and mean it with her whole heart.
That right there was all he needed to hear.
"I should get back to Diamond." Seth said already pointing in the direction where her scent trailed. "Thank you again for registering me and for everything. I'll find a way to repay you."
"You already know how. I'll just wait for your decision."
Seth said his final goodbyes with a decision made to visit the Cullens. Then rushed after Diamond. Just as Alice said, he caught up to her in no time. Shoulders slumped, head hung low, just shuffling along the sidewalk with clumsy steps. She stopped when she came to a walkway, looked around, and just stood there despite the flashing white sign.
She barely acknowledged his existence when Seth carefully approached her to refrain from spooking her. "You okay?"
A long, deep sigh escaped from Diamond's chest. "I've lived here for so long, ran through most of the city, and suddenly, I don't remember how to get home. I don't know where I am or how I got here from the restaurant. Or where the fuck I got these headphones from." In her hand was Seth's noise-canceling headphones she might've mistaken for something else when she left. She seemed more present than earlier, though confusion clouded heavy over her. Especially when her head lifted to acknowledge Seth and the crease between her brows deepened. "I don't remember why you're here. I don't even know your name, but I remember your face—"
"It's Seth." He introduced with a hand against his chest. "I'm Seth. Seth Clearwater."
Her nod was distant and Seth knew there was a chance she'd forget again. "I keep feeling like I'm forgetting something. My phone is dead. And—" A cool breeze forced her arms around her chest for warmth. "It's so fucking cold, I'm starting to hate it here." She shivered uncontrollably, undoing her ponytail so her braids could form some kind of warmth barrier around her neck.
Seth's hoodie was off his back in one motion, already slipping it over Diamond's head. The hoodie practically swallowed her, the sleeves hanging past her hands. Warmth—and his scent, that worked out in his favor—finally wrapped around her.
He pulled up the hood, then gently tugged her braids free. "Better?"
She nodded.
"Good. Come with me, I'll drive you home. I have your food, debit card, and your water bottle. Whatever you left behind, I'll come back for it; I just need to get you home first. Is that okay?"
"Aren't you cold?" Diamond asked instead.
Seth shook his head, tucking the fabric a little closer around her, afraid she'd drop dead from all that shivering. "I'm perfectly fine. I'm 'built different' like you said, if you remember that." She acknowledged it was something she'd say but not so much the moment it happened. "Can I take you home now?" He reasked before her brain distracted her again.
Not taking her home was out of the question. Seth was going to do it regardless of Diamond's answer, but he still asked because she deserved a choice on the matter even if it went against his wishes. He also needed her to be sure she knows what's going on so she doesn't suddenly gain awareness or another brainfog episode, forget who Seth was, and start screaming out of nowhere.
She nodded again. "I don't care."
"And you know who I am?"
She stared long and hard before answering, "Seth, take me home." The irritated bit in her tone was very much the woman he remembered, and took her clothed hand to lead them to his jeep parked in a lot. There was a ten-dollar fee.
The drive back was filled with silence because Diamond could no longer fight her sleep. She was knocked out the moment she sat down. It was to the point that she wouldn't wake up no matter how many times Seth called her name or lightly touched her. He had no choice—a happy choice to make—but carry her inside the dorm building.
"I'm gonna pick you up and carry you to your room, okay? Me, Seth." He said in case there was a one in a million chance his voice carried through her dreams. "So don't panic or scream. I'm only helping you to bed and I'll leave. I promise. Seth promises."
Diamond's body slumped out the car when Seth opened the door. He caught her head with curses under his breath, keeping her steady as he leaned over to unbuckle the seatbelt, surprised she hadn't woken up yet. Gathering her limp arms around his neck without pulling on his hair, Seth planted a foot on the step and carefully shifted her into his hold. She sank into his naturally heated body, her skin still cold like ice that he quickly melted away.
A moan vibrated her chest, only to tighten her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist.
Seth couldn't quiet his thoughts or control the chills scorching his body upon each breath felt as Diamond nestled into the crook of his neck. The contact alone drove him crazy. Just earlier today he pondered on how he could mark her with his scent and now fate granted him the chance.
His cheek brushed ever so lightly against hers, tightening his arms around her, unashamed to satisfy that primal urge. He convinced himself it was to protect her to repel vampires, but knew deep down in that not-so-innocent heart of his, this was for him. So needy to savor this very moment, he inhaled her. Collecting the oils seeping from her scalp and the sweet tang of her sweat that left him groaning pathetically, forced to restrain himself before he ruined a perfect moment.
So he thought of other shit, like cartoons and his favorite games he liked playing. Anything to distract the boner threatening to expose him.
Despite his hungry wolf, Seth was respectful of his hand placement. At least as respectful as he could be without her sliding off.
He found the building key hidden within her cute brown phone case but had to text Renesmee for the rest of the directions. She was home to his surprise, already standing halfway out the door in a matching pj set once Seth exited the janky elevator on the 3rd floor.
"Is she okay?" Nes asked on a level that wouldn't wake Diamond and only Seth could pick up. She opened the door wider for them to enter, careful not to let anything hit her.
"She's out cold. She ran herself out to this point." Seth noticed Nes wasn't surprised by this at all. "I'm lucky I followed my gut or she would've been passed out on the street. Would never forgive myself if I let that happen."
He shifted around in search of the kitchen counter to temporarily place her loose items and food. Nes saw what he was doing and did it for him. The tension between her straight brows grew more pronounced, worried about something that kept bothering him.
"Does she do this a lot?" Seth finally asked.
He inspected their living space and caught the calendar pinned on the fridge. It showcased their schedule. Diamond's, the blue marker, more packed than Renesmee, the red marker.
Her gaze narrowed from the corner of his eye, guilted as if she was the reason for this outcome. "Only when something's stressing her out or she can't sleep. I've only noticed recently it's something she does for a few hours, but it's becoming more frequent. She likes to tire herself out this way."
His gaze snapped back to her with disbelief. "Is she always this restless and stressed?"
Seth's emotions had gotten the best of him and he'd momentarily forgotten about his imprint sleeping in his arms. She stirred and nobody moved until she settled. He carefully pushed her head back into the crook of his neck and caressed her back with a gentle motion to help her back to sleep. It soothed him, doing it without even realizing it really.
His voice much lower and softer than before, "she doesn't have any other outlets? One that won't injure her and likely cost her career?"
Nes leaned against the counter where a big protein container sat. She pushed her brunette curls behind her ear with a shrug. "If she's not studying, she's working. If she's not working, she's running. If she's not running, she's trying to catch up on sleep. If she's not sleeping, the cycle continues."
Her arm reached out to touch Seth. His current view of the dorm blurred into vivid images of Diamond through the crack of her door. The dimmed lamp bright over her head, cramped over her desk with a knee hugged to her chest, struggling to stay awake and read over material on her laptop while jotting down notes no longer presentable to read. The lavender-scented candle was strong in his nose.
The vision swirled and shifted to the inside of an Indian restaurant. Diamond appeared dressed in light-washed jeans and a plain tank top, her hair slicked back in a pineapple. In her hands, was some kind of chicken stew being placed on the table where Renesmee currently sat. "Careful, it's hot." She warned, and Renesmee watched her walk away to handle her other tables and carry dirty dishes to the back. She looked worn out. Putting on fake smiles and pitching her voice higher to mask her exhaustion.
The vision shifted again to the inside of their living room area where—still through the eyes of Renesmee lying on the couch watching TV—Diamond is slipping on her shoes, dressed for a run. "Heading out for a bit. Don’t wait for me." Her voice was deep with exhaustion. Through the curtain slit, Diamond was jogging off into the darkness. It switched again to the inside of an indoor track where Diamond was running hardcore drills with her coach. Just constant shouting in her ears to push harder, be better, and get it done.
One vision after another showcased her usual work, eat, study, run schedule. Even nights where there was muffled crying. And if that wasn't the case, she'd sit alone during her meals, staring out into the void or listening to music before Nes bothered her. But even then, there was always an excuse to back out of plans. If she did go, she'd make the most of it but it's clear she preferred solitude. The visions were so real it was as if Seth was present in the moment, and would catch himself trying to reach for her. Sit next to her. Speak with her. Which he couldn't do without accidentally dropping the real her or bumping into something.
Seth's vision was restored, the dorm view was just as it was before the visions.
Nes stepped back, leaning further against the counter. "As you can see, it's hard getting her out the house. Nevertheless, break old habits." She looked at Diamond and frowned. "She's the most dedicated woman I know—the only one I know outside the family. More human than I'd ever be."
He shook his head with disapproval. "A dedicated woman who doesn't know her limits or when to chillax."
"I reckon she knows them, she just doesn't care."
This was his fault, so Seth believed. None of this would've been her reality had he found her earlier. Renesmee mentioned before that her roommate was a track star but he had no clue it was his imprint the entire time. He should be grateful he was here now, and he was, but he'd continue to blame himself for not finding her the second she arrived.
He truly needed to get his shit together. No longer was he providing for himself, but for his imprint and the future they'll have together. He'd already made a checklist. A good-paying job was at the top. His savings were enough to last him a couple of months, likely shorter since he agreed to cover the electricity and water bill at Simone's place, not to mention his phone bill and other monthly services. Though Diamond wasn't in the equation when he first started saving, he can still make it work with minor adjustments because he doesn't know how long he can take seeing her live like this. It's painful enough. She's overworking herself with no care for how it'll affect her body and impact her performance.
He refused to get to a certain point of finding out.
How could he be her wolf if he couldn't take care of her? What's the point of the imprint if he wasn't doing his part to lift the burden off her? She'd been doing for herself so long it's time he stepped in.
"I should put her in bed while she's still sleeping or else I might carry her until she wakes up." Seth was already following her scent down the narrow hallway to her room.
His vision adjusted accordingly to navigate through the darkness and placed Diamond carefully in bed. Catching sight of a pink-colored bonnet near her pillow, Seth contemplated the next action itching at him. He knew how important it was to Simone before she slept, that Diamond most definitely prioritized. So he carefully gathered her braids into the silky hole to the best of his abilities before she turned over onto her side, away from him. He placed her phone on the charger, then removed her shoes and socks to place at the bedside, her right ankle was wrapped in thick black tape.
Her room was a mess, not that he was one to judge. Just clothes and shoes and empty water bottles tossed everywhere. Her desk was disorganized; makeup brushes scattered on open books, an empty mug once filled with hot chocolate, hair products, and jewelry placed wherever it's taken off or used. He didn't even want to get into the amount of dust that could affect her health.
Aside from a dirty room, it was quite empty with all that was needed. There wasn't much that showcased her personality or interests aside from a few movie and album posters. She liked horror and listening to R&B and Rap. She liked pink and fuzzy items because of the amount of pink and fuzzy items he found. She liked makeup and taking care of her appearance. She liked dark chocolate from the half-eaten infused almonds and sea salt thins on the bedside. She liked cute cat plushies from the three small ones shaped like a ball. She liked winning and took pride in them from the trophies and gold-coined necklaces and pictures posted up on its own platform. She liked taking pictures from her Instagram. She obviously liked track, but aside from that, Seth couldn't tell if she took up any other hobbies. Other outlets to regulate her emotions without risking her track career. He assumed she didn't want to put much effort into her room with nowhere to place it every summer or even after she graduated.
But he set aside those thoughts for now and started a pile for all the clothes on the floor to throw in the washer. He placed her shoes neatly inside the closet, along the floor with the smaller shoes shoved in the hanging storage where most were placed. Swept and mopped with the supplies Nes provided. Placed her makeup brushes and jewelry back in their designated compartments. Lined her hair products, organized her books but kept the ones open, and wiped down the desk and the dusty lamp. Then wiped down her mirror, her trophies, and anywhere that needed it. He was putting his senses to use. He also didn't know where exactly she placed most of her clothes and was uncomfortable searching around, already invading her privacy enough, so he left them folded on her chair.
It's a miracle she slept through everything but she was knocked out cold. Even started to snore a little.
Once satisfied with Diamond's clean room, Seth sat on the floor with his knees to his chest beside the bed to catch his breath. His promise to leave once she was put to bed hadn't left him, but he refused to head out without a proper goodbye. "I think I know what you need from me—what the imprint calls me to do now that my head's clear from all this cleaning. It's not that you're not looking for love or a friend or whatever else, you just need someone present. Someone to break your old habits. Someone to have fun with. Someone to tell you to slow down because you're already doing enough, or push you to keep going when you want to give up. Maybe you just need someone to listen. Maybe just stand there and share the space with you while you do what you do. I don't know. I could be entirely wrong; I'm still figuring this shit out as I go."
Seth took in her peaceful nature, completely unaware of this conversation—out-loud thinking—going on.
"Who knows how long you've been taking care of yourself, but I want to take care of you too. I want to share the burden with you. I want to celebrate your wins and comfort your losses. I want to be here for you in any way you'll allow me."
The more layers he uncovered the more challenging this was, but the more he understood and welcomed it. She's out here by herself, in a foreign state, with no family or anyone nearby, adulting so early in her twenties without a chance to enjoy it and explore what's around. So Seth will be her family. He'll be her lover. Her friend. A presence in the midst, a fun time—he'd be it all. Whatever she needed even if she didn't know what that was, he'd be it before then.
All of which came naturally to him. It's finding a balance so he wasn't hovering that he needed to work on and he will. He promised he would.
"I don't know how to leave you now that I'm here. It physically hurts to convince my mind to leave. My wolf hates the idea too, but I know I should because it's what's right." He finally pushed to his feet with much conviction, and reached over to tug the cover over her so she's warm and toasty. "I'll be here with you soon. And trust when that day comes, I'm never letting you go."
Nes was in the small kitchen putting away last-minute supplies. Exhaustion hadn't touched her the same way it did Diamond, being used to being up with her vampiric family who had to force her to sleep.
Despite hearing his steps, she didn't look at him immediately until she put away the last item. "All good?" A softer, empathetic look filled her gaze, her cheeks warmer than before.
Of course, she heard the intimate confession Seth laid on thick. Nothing was getting past her sharp hearing. At least, she was nice enough to pretend she hadn't heard it even if her features gave it away.
"She's good now. I'm good too. But look," a nervous hand rubbed along the back of his neck. "I don't think she'll take well to me being here and touching her stuff. That's if she remembers I was here. Maybe you can—"
"Already thought of and handled," Nes assured. "You go home and get some rest. I'll let you know if anything changes."
"No, let me know when this happens again. I can't let it happen anymore. There's too much at risk, and I'd hate myself if something preventable happened."
She opened the door with a nod. "I will." She promised.
This slight new version of Seth wasn't the goofy type when it came to Diamond's safety. There was a click and everything changed, especially when it wasn't just him in the picture. Nes getting a taste of it was surprising to see though it happened with every imprinted wolf.
Seth looked forward to today. Now that he's grasped an idea of what Diamond needed from him, he couldn't wait to give that to her once she's well-rested and sound-minded.
Notes:
— I'm aware Alice can't see the future of werewolves or some visions early on without certain emotions taking place, so please don't remind me. Instead, refer to the disclaimer stated at the beginning of the book before you read! If you can't find it, in short; I don't care. It's fiction.
Chapter 10: Odd Things Are Happening

Chapter Ten| Odd Things Are Happening
𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 12, 2024
𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗗 from her bed when her phone displayed six missed calls from Kimi. It was on the charger, back in her dorm, a place she doesn't remember returning to. Though it was the least concerning part since she made it back safely. The how never mattered. It wasn’t the first this has happened, returning with little to no memory during the hazy period of exhaustion, and it wouldn’t be the last.
She finally rid the ache in her chest, purged her mind of disappointing thoughts, and gotten some actual sleep—the best sleep this entire semester by far. Which proved running worked after all.
But what concerned Diamond was the time. It’s two-fucking-fourty in the afternoon. She’s missed two classes. Weight training and Calculus 3.
And she’s an hour late to track practice.
“Fuck!” A string of curses let loose as Diamond threw off the covers, pushing through the ache that’s plagued her body and momentarily pushed her back into bed. She instinctively stepped over random objects that’s been wasting away on the floor for days, maybe weeks. All forgotten about and joined by more shit she threw around.
She rummaged through her dresser for her favorite pink sports bra and biker shorts set, only to find them piled with clothes on her desk chair. Perfectly folded. Somewhat color-coded. She paused. In the mix were clothes she knew for a fact were dirty because she started a lazy pile on the floor. But they’re…clean?
Something’s off.
Her room smelt strongly of cleaning products with a hint of lavender from her burning candle. The floor felt unusually smooth and slightly sticky. Either her vision magically improved overnight or her mind was playing tricks.
Her gaze snapped to the spotless floor. Then to her organized desk and dresser. Then to her clean mirror, her trophy set with not a speck of dust in sight. Then to her closet and everywhere else that wasn’t how it’s been left. It was then, through a quick glance at the mirror that she noticed the navy blue hoodie on her body, something she didn’t own.
“What the fuck?”
Never once had Diamond attempted to clean during the haze of exhaustion. Not that she could exactly testify, because who knew what actually happened in those moments? Stuff got dirtier, not cleaner. This was the work of someone else. Someone like her apologetic roommate who’d do anything to be forgiven and had admitted to enjoying cleaning as a fun hobby.
But first, she rushed to the bathroom down the hall. Her kidneys was seconds from exploding having to pee so fucking bad.
Voices were speaking through the wall. One of them was Nes. The other was familiar but not exactly ringing a bell through the long sigh of relief as Diamond released the pressure tight in her lower belly. When finished, she found Nes in the kitchen with another family member—an aunt, cousin, someone close because Diamond never could keep up—restocking the kitchen. It had to be the one who came over the most, cooking meals and restocking the fridge usually when Diamond wasn’t around.
The brunette woman’s head lifted for one second and was already in front of Diamond, pulling her into a hug. Diamond stiffened. Her roommate and her family and peers were very affectionate people and expressive about it, something she wasn’t used to.
“You remember my aunt, Esme?” Nes introduced.
“I remember you have lots of aunts.” Diamond commented. She felt it was too late to return the hug and kept her arms to her side even if there was enough time.
A warm smile tugged Esme’s lips as she pulled back. She didn’t make it as awkward as Diamond had and was thankful for it. “We have quite the family that continues to grow by day, but it’s so nice to see you so late in the day when you’re usually out by this time.” She glanced at the clock hung in the living room. “Sleeping in?”
“Um, no. I slept through my alarms.”
“Oh no! I hope you didn’t miss anything important?”
Like two classes and a good portion of track practice. Yeah, not important at all.
Nes didn’t say much. She quietly took out the groceries and organized them, but even then, Diamond felt her stealing glances.
“Getting in extra sleep helps you function better, so perhaps some things happen for a reason.” She took the oatmeal milk off the counter and placed it in the fridge, then took out a handful of ingredients to refill the counter. “You hungry? I was just about to make turkey sandwiches. Should I save two for you?”
Diamond actually was starving this time. “I’d appreciate that, thank you.”
“Of course! Nes told me you like fudge brownies—anything chocolatey—so I made a batch last night.” On the counter, in the corner near the oven, was a glass container filled with neatly stacked fudge brownies. Why was her roommate’s family so nice and giving? It’s things like this that make it hard to dislike Nes.
Nes said nothing still, but couldn’t hide the appreciative smile she tried chewing back.
“You really didn’t have to…” Diamond trailed, adding the aunt to a mental list of those she needed to pay back. Third on the list.
“Please, I have so much time to spare and baking speeds it up.” Esme’s laughter was soft and welcoming. The light color of her blouse added to her welcoming presence. “Do tell me what you think and where I can improve. I tried my best with the fudge filling.”
She promised to turn in an honest review and looked to Nes who was nervous for some reason. “Can I talk to you for a moment? In my room?”
Nes sent her aunt a quick glance. “Sure.”
“Were you in my room touching my stuff? Everything was properly organized in its own messy way, and now I can’t find my shit.” Diamond accused the second they were alone in her bedroom. Honestly, who else could’ve done it? Certainly not herself. Not to this detail of cleaning.
She chewed her bottom lip as she toyed with the sleeves of her dark green shirt. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself. You’ve been ignoring me the past few days and this was the only way I could get your attention and make it up to you.”
The strangest thing happened—a vivid thought of Nes back on that day in Seth’s house, in the same clothes just as she remembered most of it. She reflected deeply and apologized about the situation with Jacob who tried to comfort her. She pictured her roommate wanting to go back and change her decision, maybe call up Seth so she could drive Diamond home instead, promising she could hold out for a couple of more hours to see her friend home safely. Conversations she suddenly imagined. Jacob hugged his arms around Nes, nestling in the crook of her neck as he told her not to beat herself over it because it wasn't her fault, yet Nes continued to. The feeling of regret weighed heavily in ways never felt before. So deep and twisted that Diamond had to clutch her chest to soothe it.
The thought suddenly disappeared when Nes stepped back. Diamond hadn’t realized she was touching her until her hand also pulled back to her side. “Sorry,” her apology felt layered with multiple reasons behind it.
Diamond blinked, unsure what the fuck just happened. Didn’t even know she could think and feel so vividly, scenarios she wasn’t present for nor thought about through the eyes of her roommate. “It’s fine,” her fingers still twisted in her chest, the vision fresh in her mind. “Just…just don’t touch my stuff again without asking. I don’t like that. I don’t go touching your shit. My privacy is mine and yours is yours.”
“Yup.” She gave a firm nod. “I promise it won’t happen again.”
“Good.”
She launched forward when Diamond attempted to leave. “Do you forgive me for that day?”
“I honestly don’t wanna talk about it.”
“Then when can we talk about it? I can’t just leave it up in the air and there’s this unspoken tension with my roommate. Maybe you can live that way but I can’t.”
Diamond could live like that because it’s easier to protect herself from others when the conversation was prolonged long enough to forget about it. She still felt betrayed and frustrated with Renesmee. She a hundred percent believed that if she chose her boyfriend once when she was most needed, she’d do it again. But unlike everyone else she could easily block out, they were roommates. It’d be weird to live like strangers when their circle was close and they saw each other almost every day. She also deep-cleaned her room—a nice but unnecessary and invasive gesture—which made it harder to build up that wall against her.
“Fine,” Diamond chose to forgive her, but never to forget. “It’s beyond me now so there’s no point in dwelling on it.”
…like it wasn’t secretly creating this irritated feeling whenever she saw her face, but what’s done was done. She learned her lesson and won’t make the same mistake again.
“So you forgive me?” She fidgeted with her sleeve, staring up with big doe eyes that were seconds from filling up with tears. “We’re good now?”
Her nod was slow. “We’re good.”
Diamond had to cover her ear from her roommate’s squealing. She tensed when her arms wrapped tight around her waist to seal their unity. “Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me another chance. I miss our friendship and talking to you, which I have so much to share with you! I don’t even know where to start.” She rambled like usual.
Nes was off before Diamond could push her away. Her strength was something else and her body was already aching enough, which she’ll take medicine for.
“Let’s start later. I need a shower, I’m running late and my day is already packed enough, but I’ll find some time to squeeze you in.”
A frown momentarily painted her face before it was replaced with a soft smile. “I’ll wait for you then.” She promised.
"𝗬𝗢𝗨'𝗥𝗘 𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘!"
A bunch of eyes followed Diamond rushing into the indoor track building, swallowing the last two bites of Esme’s turkey sandwiches. Some snickered when she tripped over someone’s bag with her bad ankle, which caused her to hiss. She pushed through the mild pain, set her bag against the wall after shoving her phone inside, and dropped to the floor, already stretching.
“Sorry, coach,” she breathed out, face warming with embarrassment. “I overslept.”
“I don’t wanna hear those weak ass excuses. Incompetent people make excuses. When you choose to be here, I expect you to prioritize being on time. Prove you’re hungry enough to want it. I want you running bleachers once you’re finished.”
Her teeth gritted together, nails pinching into the flesh of her leg as she pushed more to feel the stretch. “Yes, coach.” She muttered.
Diamond caught the backside of his hand tossing up in annoyance, the useless pair of shades hanging loose off the top of his bald head, clutching the clipboard under his arm as he directed his attention back to everyone else. He’s still muttering under his breath about Diamond’s tardiness. Coach Howard was the true definition of not letting shit go. He’ll talk about it all damn day and bring it up the next time he sees that particular person, forever holding it over their head.
This was the first time Diamond had ever been late to practice when others have missed more, and he couldn’t even extend some grace.
The whole room was upside down from Diamond’s current position. In that same breath, caught Kimi heading over, drenched in sweat and downing her water bottle. Her curly hair up in her usual messy bun, dressed in her go-to leggings and fitted muscle shirt. Diamond just knew she was coming over here with some bullshit to add to the bullshit she was already dealing with by that look in her eye.
She pulled upward, slowly easing from her crouched position. “Don’t even.” Diamond warned.
“I tried your phone a million fucking times.” Kimi explained anyway.
“I know. I overslept.”
“Coach is pissed. Got everyone flocking to Coach Miller and Coach Dunne for questions and advice.”
“I know.” Diamond bit back.
Coach Miller and Coach Dunne were in charge of their own particular track activities. Coach Howard oversaw everything, though his main focus was the short and middle distance and relay races. Coach Miller was the funny one. Young enough to blend in with everyone else and always had snack bars on him that he’d give out just because. Coach Dunne was chill when she wanna be, but still a much better hangout option than Coach Howard.
Everything was serious with him because he saw the potential in everyone—what he tells everyone so he doesn’t lose his job. He gave a hundred when he saw the other giving a hundred. And he was always on Diamond’s ass, shouting and pushing her to be better than yesterday. There were no easy days with him. Hence was everyone flocked to other coaches for their needs.
Kimi didn’t leave as Diamond started undressing down to her pink set to begin warm-ups, her eyes following the navy blue hoodie with a smirk.
“What?” Diamond asked, folding and carefully placing the hoodie on top of her sweats that was on top of her partially opened bag.
She shook her head. But then inched closer with her hands behind her back like she was up to something. “Seems you had a time last night. With someone in particular?” Her brows danced, hinting at something Diamond failed to catch.
“What are you going on about?”
She pushed and forced her clouded memory to come back to her, fearing she might’ve gotten caught doing some fucked up embarrassing shit. So crazy that Nes withheld the information. Nothing came. Her memory wasn’t coming back. The most she remembered was how cold it was last night, and how instantly warm she was after…something, whatever that something was.
You owe me nothing, a voice with no owner or distinction to place one suddenly returned, echoing in the back of her head. All I want is to take care of you. That makes me happy.
“Whose hoodie is that?” Kimi’s chin jutted toward the hoodie with knitted brows. A piece of article that suddenly meant something to her.
Diamond shrugged during her warm-ups. “Nes’s probably. I imagine she thought I was gonna freeze my ass off and forced the hoodie on me. She even cleaned my room just to prove how sorry she was.”
She blinked long and hard before agreeing with everything. “Right…right. It definitely looks like something she owns. Sounds like her for sure.”
Or the hoodie belonged to her boyfriend, Jacob. It seemed too big to fit her small figure unless it was purposefully bought to fit extra baggy on her. Diamond hoped it was Nes’s, then it wouldn’t feel awkward admitting this piece of clothing was comforting. It smelt good, like a guy—a thought she pushed back, because the only guy who’d ever allow Nes to wear some guy’s hoodie was Jacob himself. She saw how possessive that man was.
But…it didn’t smell like him.
From the clothes Nes already possessed, it didn’t give Jacob’s ‘signature scent’, if it could even be called that. But who else could it be? She didn’t know any other guys. None close enough anyway of who she’d be willing to accept their hoodies.
It disgusted her to think that way. To find comfort in another man’s scent—her roommate’s boyfriend—to want to clutch it tighter instead of keeping it away. She’s surprised her roommate never brought it up.
The bleachers always humbled Diamond. From a two-minute sprint up hundreds of stairs to jog back down, to ten repeats of fifteen squats, to another ten repeats of fifteen leg lifts, to repeat it once again—a bitch was tired. Going up was the easy part; it’s the going down that always felt like the ground was moving closer and her foot would slip and she’d fall to her death. Her ankle for sure wasn’t getting any better.
Coach Dunne monitored the sets since a few others joined, with Coach Howard in Diamond’s ear adding his two cents whenever he could. So she pushed through the aches and pain to finish.
The cool wall pressed against her sweaty back was the only thing keeping Diamond from collapsing. She struggled to catch her breath but quench her thirst at the same time that a teammate had to pat her back from choking. The water was gone in seconds. Her dry towel was drenched after patting down her face and neck. Her shorts was stuck in her ass. Even had to wrap the ends of her braids in a messy bun to keep off her shoulders from overheating.
The world finally settled and light-headedness ceased after a while. Diamond crouched with her hands on her knees, regulating herself with deep and long breaths. The pain in her chest felt good, light because of all the Tylenol she took earlier. Her ankle, however, remained the same.
“…It’s my first time seeing him here and I want him badly.” Michael, Diamond’s teammate who joined the bleachers drills, sat in a small group with two other girls, Aisha and Sierra, admiring someone in the distance.
Sierra agreed. “Fine as fuck and for no fucking reason. It’s like God is testing me and my relationship.”
“And let me tell you—” Michael did a dramatic pause with his finger pointed toward Sierra, Aisha already chuckling with a mouth full of a granola bar. “—God won. He might as well walk my ass to the gates of hell himself. I’m already heading there shiiit. The least he could do is drop me off.”
They burst out laughing. Diamond even found herself smirking before it washed away.
Her head lifted and instantly found Amin. Short fade, dark-skinned, perfectly muscled, tall, and a smile to die for. He’s currently running short reps on the inner field with Coach Howard to strengthen his core, sweat glistening his perfect features. An absolutely beautiful man. Someone Diamond had secretly been crushing on. She wasn’t only because everyone on the team wanted Amin and he was known for giving in to everyone’s whim, often without trying.
But she’d never pursue him. He’s good to look at, good at what he does, good to imagine an alternative what if and be delusional over. But not good for something long-term, something real.
Amin liked the attention he got from others. He liked knowing that everyone found him attractive and the privileges that came with it. He seemed the type to die if he was forced to live without it, already the type to pretend he doesn’t know the ‘hype’ he has to build more of it, and that wasn’t the future Diamond wanted to deal with. Can’t believe she was once convinced that she’ll one day get drunk enough to lose her virginity just to fuck him and say she did. Maybe a kiss at most. Who cared about standards when it came to him?
However, Amin has been here for a while. It’s not his first day here. But that’s because they weren’t looking in his direction, didn’t mind him at all which was the first of many. They were looking toward the bleachers.
Toward Seth.
Seth fucking Clearwater—a last name she somehow knew when everyone’s ever referred to him by his first name.
Diamond straightened from her crouched position, shocked to see him here. She thought she’d never see him again once he drove her back. It’s the sole reason of his forgiveness, aside from just trying to get past it. She was wrong. He’s kicked back against the bleachers like it’s his house, scrolling through his laptop placed between his parted legs. His curly hair wild and unbent to restriction, a plain black hoodie over what looked like black baggy jeans, white shoes peeking under. He finally dresses accordingly to the weather. Beside him was a familiar face from the bonfire—Jared, if she remembered correctly. A funny guy who’s relaxed and constantly boasted about his childhood sweetheart, Kim.
What the hell is he doing here?
Why is he here?
How long has he been here?
More importantly, “fine as fuck?” She analyzed him thoroughly, her voice low and filled with much thoughtful confusion.
He’s attractive, that part she couldn’t deny. The type of attraction where the guy seemed oblivious to the fact that he’s attractive, and even better and opposed to Amin, doesn’t know he was. Maybe it’s the way he’s sitting? Women, and men, love a good manspread. Maybe it’s the hair? Long curly hair that’s thick with a little volume has always been a common weakness. Subtle jewelry played a factor in it. And he has a strong jawline with perfect high cheekbones, and a somewhat cute goofy smile, and a goofy personality to match it—if looking at him through the eyes of others, not through hers, of course. Generally speaking. She couldn’t even pin it all on Jared because while further overheard conversations were about Seth, they started hitting on him too.
As if Diamond spoke in a quiet room and it was just them two, Seth’s head lifted in her direction. She tore away her gaze but she’d already been caught. His reaction burned in her head. The shocked curiosity on his face brightened suddenly, and his head lowered in a shy manner, biting back a stupid smile. The nerve of him to sit up, fit his posture, run a hand through his hair, like he was…posing? All that she caught from the corner of her eyes, and sneaking a few glances.
No fucking way he heard me in this noisy ass gymnasium. They’re nowhere near each other and she was talking to herself, a whisper really. It had to be a coincidence. A crazy one.
Tayen was jamming out to new music with other team members, when she caught Diamond flagging for her attention. “What’s he doing here?” She tried to point him out without looking at him, for some reason already feeling his stare.
She followed the awkward motion toward the bleachers and smirked. “He’s just sticking around until he finds his crowd. Rez kids always stick together.” Her two fingers twisted to show how together they were. “Pretty sure everyone’s gonna grab a bite after practice. You tagging along?”
“I’ll pass. Gotta catch up on homework, and I have another class later in the day.”
“Suit yourself.”
She merely glanced his way while walking back. He was looking. Her face grew warm.
Of course, he’d stick close to those he grew up with. It’s his first time attending a big university, that part Diamond remembered. She just didn’t expect to see him so soon.
Coach Dunne flagged Diamond down just as she was returning to refill her water bottle. “You ready? Coach Howard wanna run some light drills with you and the others. Fix your form, build extra strength and endurance.” She said while fixing her black slick ponytail, her bangs curled perfectly above her arched brows. “With outdoor season right around the corner, we have to make sure the A-team is on their A-game. This season is coming in hot with fresh talent, sponsors, and much more.”
Her body was already going through it from punishment and yesterday’s run, but she’s been through worse and it’s what she signed up for. Plus, she really needed to build up the endurance to get noticed and sponsored. There’s a lot to look forward to.
Coach Howard let go the current group he was working with to get on with the next group, which Diamond was a part of. Two sets of resistant parachutes lie on the inner field of the track. He split the groups into two so it was easier to watch two run at a time. Once they made it to and from the end of the inner field, it was the next person’s turn unless coach wanted someone to run it again.
Diamond was fourth, last in the group before the drill resets for another round.
“Let’s see if those bleachers got you right.” Taunted Coach Howard as Diamond stepped into the loop and hooked the belt around her waist. “Better have taught you a little something about being late to practice. If you're burning now, it’ll burn worse.”
She held back the eye roll threatening to come. But in that same breath, her stomach stirred. His last comment meant he was watching her and he wasn’t getting off her ass any time soon, like that was any surprise.
“Starting positions!”
Diamond crouched with her right knee slightly forward, her hands pressed into the faux grass. She pushed up. Set on the goal, at the end of the inner field. Soon as Coach Howard shouted for them to go, she pushed off running. The massive amount of sudden weight constantly placed on her ankle almost made her cry out in pain, but she bit back to contain it and kept ahead. Once she got it right on the first try, coach wouldn’t have much to say even when he found little things to criticize.
“STOP!”

Chapter Eleven | So Stupid, So Weird, So Irritating, And Yet
𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦, 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 | 𝘍𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 12, 2024
𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗗 𝗜𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗬, looking around confused. It took Diamond and Samuel, her running partner, a little longer to slow down at the speed they were pushing.
Coach Howard smacked his lips irritably. “Take a seat. You’re done for today.”
Diamond and Samuel looked to each other, unsure of what or who he was talking to. Samuel was quite tall and thin-looking with long skinny legs and shaggy blonde hair, big square glasses framing his face. One wouldn’t think he was an athlete by looks, but he could run a 400-meter with his eyes closed.
Panic stirred when Coach Howard turned around and everyone’s gaze landed on Diamond. “You’re done for the day, Diamond. Take off your gear, get your stuff, and go to rehab.”
Even while knowing, she still questioned his decision. “What? Coach, why? If it’s my stride, I can fix it. If my posture’s a little off, I can fix that too. I’m locked in.”
He shook his head. “There was hesitation when you pushed off, unbalanced and wobbly. That tells me you’re hurt. Judging by the K-tape peeking from your sock, it’s your ankle. That’s a risky situation I’m not dealing with.”
Diamond peeked down. Just as he said, her shoe was eating at her low-ankled sock, the thick black tape showing out. There’s no point in fixing it.
Coach Howard may talk mad shit, the original rage-baiter, but he truly was attentive. Nothing got passed him.
“I’m good. Just stepped on something earlier, but I'm good.” She walked back to the starting point and crouched back into position. “Let’s run it again.”
She waited.
And waited.
And waited for what felt like hours until Coach Howard spoke up. “You’re no use to me with a twisted ankle, and there’s no place for you on the team if you don’t know when to fucking stop and listen.” She pushed up, jaw clenched, nails pinched in her palms, glaring a hole through his fat bald head. “We get it—you’re good. You’re the fastest. No one’s touching you. But I’m not losing one of my best runners, so sit your little ass down for a moment and seek rehab once you’re actually good. You can return once they clear you. Until then, I don’t wanna see your face.”
But they were in pre-season. Every second mattered. Diamond’s future mattered and she counted on it to seek more exposure and gain sponsors to advance her career. An injury never held her back. But then again, it’s been a minute since there was pain in her ankle. But still, she could push through it. She has to.
“Coach…” The desperation in her voice was embarrassing.
Coach Howard ignored her and demanded Samuel return to run it again, already finding Diamond’s replacement who was waiting for the gear she still had on. With a range of curses and eye rolls, Diamond unhooked the belt and tossed it to the ground. Nowhere near her replacement. She can come for it. Then marched over to where her stuff was, no longer hiding the limp, and flopped down. Her knees to chest, her hands along her forehead. She stared at the ground for a long moment. Hot all over, literally shaking with a range of emotions filling her.
She grabbed her water bottle to cool down, shocked at its heaviness. It’s full. Room temperature and filled to the top. She checked to make sure it was hers, and it was. Wasn’t it empty before?
She sipped the water regardless and stared at the ground between her legs, unable to stop her hands from shaking. She couldn’t get out of her head. Constant questioning of her worth, doubting what she contributed to the team and herself, feeling useless and never good enough, regretting putting herself in this position to begin with. How could she calm down or get it together when the voices kept getting louder and louder?
“Man, fuck this shit.”
Diamond slipped on her stolen hoodie, packed her bag, slung the strap across her shoulder, and marched out of the gym. A really loud vibration of someone rushing down the bleachers echoed behind but she didn’t care to look back, assuming someone else was getting punished.
Amin was outside chatting with others when he caught Diamond zooming down the hallway to get out the building. “Yo!” He left his friends and rushed alongside her. “You come late and now you're leaving early? I swear you be making your own rules.”
Even while filled with anger, she couldn’t find herself to wrongfully lash out at Amin. It’s tempting though. She didn’t want him knowing the shit going on in her head and wanted to keep the image, whatever it was, he had of her, and she forced a smile that felt weird and strained.
“My ankle’s a little fucked and coach is being a bitch about it.” Diamond said.
He regarded her ankle, and gave a side-to-side nod that agreed with Coach Howard’s decision. “Ankle pain is serious business. We can’t lose our track star to a broken ankle. It’d be boring without you.”
“Shut up,” a real laugh filled her throat. “It’s not broken. I’m walking just fine.”
“If you keep pushing like this, it might as well be.”
“You’re not any better. You stay complaining about your shoulder. That’s why your stride be looking off.”
A hand pressed to his chest acting fake hurt. “Damn, why you gotta come at me like that? Putting my business out there.” Perfect white teeth displayed, his charming smile almost made Diamond forget why she was mad in the first place. He must love it too. She hated it.
“You started it first.” She pointed out, and he didn’t deny it.
Diamond knew better than to let this man get a reaction out of her even when it fought to come out. She chewed her bottom lip to keep from fully smiling. She avoided his attentive gaze, literally staring into her soul to milk out this reaction, and stared at the wall behind him or her shoes when her cheeks started warming up. Even her laughter came out stiff in an attempt to stop it.
He’s only good for a short time, not a long time. Diamond constantly reminded herself and all the things she knew about him. But fuck, he’s a beautiful man.
He’d glance back toward the gym entrance, his head cocking slightly at something Diamond was too busy controlling herself to pay attention. Then licked his lips as he motioned ahead of them. “Let me make it up to you and walk you to rehab. I should get checked out too, I guess.”
Diamond allowed his company. They headed to the ATC & PTS (Athletic Trainers and Physical Therapists) department already filled with athletes getting checked out. Once it was Diamond’s turn, she wasn’t surprised to hear it’s a mild sprained ankle. Repetitive stress on the ankle joint caused by excessive running. She’s just glad to hear it’s not a career-ending injury. The trainer had her lie back with her right leg elevated and iced for the next twenty minutes. Then compressed it after.
She was given the whole rundown; no running for a couple of days to a week. No weight on her ankle. Ibuprofen or other over-the-counter medicine for pain. Ice every couple of hours and keep it compressed.
It’s the hardest remedy to follow when there’s only about two weeks left before the official season starts. But what choice did she have?
Seth was standing outside the door Diamond was leaving out of. All nervous and fidgety like those hospital scenes in movies where the loved one was awaiting to hear good or bad news. She jumped back, startled. Not one word was able to leave her lips before he rushed her personal space and bombarded her with so many questions.
“Are you okay? I mean, I know they said it’s just a mild sprain and you’ll be fine with rest and all of that—but how do you feel? I can’t imagine you taking this well.” Seth crouched immediately, eyes scanning her ankle before meeting her gaze again. “It doesn’t look too swollen. At least we know the ice is working. Does the compression feel too tight or it’s okay?” Nothing was said, not that he was letting her speak a word, and he continued with his ramble. “I wanted to be in there with you, by your side. You don’t know how hard it is to convince yourself to stay put, but I didn’t want to make it weird or crowd you. Don’t even know if they’d let me in. I’ve seen other people sit in with their friends, but I don’t know. Anyway, you sure you’re okay?”
So much was said and none of it explained why he cared so much. Why it felt…weird that he cared so much. Why was he even here in the first place when they weren’t close to begin with and he’s here for other unrelated reasons?
All I want is to take care of you. That makes me happy.
Diamond walked around him while shielding her face from others witnessing this mess. “Get up. I’m not dying.”
He got up as told and followed her. “I know that. I just—how are you?”
“Fine.”
Seth wasn’t convinced, but she also wasn’t trying to convince him of anything. It’s her fault she’s in this situation. Her fault that because of it, she’s not useful anymore. She feared this break would slow her down and she’d further disappoint her team.
Her thoughts disappeared when her bag was snatched with a gentle tug. “Too much weight on your ankle.” Seth reiterated the doctor’s notes. Notes he supposedly heard from way outside the room.
She reached to grab her bag, but he dodged the attempt and walked ahead. Only a few steps, but it was far enough that she couldn’t reach him. The slight numbed pain of her ankle kept it so.
Diamond let out a huff of frustration. She’s already irritated and he’s not making it any better. “Seth, I’m not in the mood to play whatever game you’re playing.” She warned, her voice breathy but stern. “I forgave you. Don’t push it because I don’t give out third chances. The second one is barely hanging on.”
His steps finally halted. Though his foot stepped forward, like he was conflicted on if he should stop fucking around and return her bag or keep walking. He kept walking.
“Doctor’s orders.” He said. “Take it up with them.”
“Don’t you have anything better to do than bother me?”
Cause he sure as hell was supposed to be with his cousin and friends like Tayen said.
“I’ve got plenty to do, but I’ll always make time to be with you.” His flashing grin faltered when he caught Diamond’s raised brow. His gaze snapped forward and he cleared his throat. “A-as a friend, you know. I can’t help myself when a friend is in need. It’s kind of my thing. Ask around and they’ll tell you. But since we’re having an honest conversation, in my most feminist opinion, I don’t think it’s safe for you to walk.” He shifted in front of her and crouched. He gave his shoulder three big pats. “Hop on. I’ll take you wherever you wanna go.”
He caught himself quickly and stood when Diamond pushed him to get around him. He’s like a dog one can’t get rid of. So irritable and dramatic. It’s like that one—non-consenting—kiss rewired his brain and he’s doing everything to make up for it when he really doesn't have to. If she had power like that over others, she would’ve long ruled the world.
“I’m just offering my services!” He caught up quickly and Diamond rolled her eyes with a heavy sigh.
He’s so stupid. So Weird. So annoying. He can’t even take a hint when to leave her the fuck alone, yet, for some reason, the slightest smile cracked. A genuine one she didn't even try to control. Just hid from him. She found him incredibly ridiculous. Not only did he add to the day she was already having, but he also found a way to lighten it with him just being him.
She stopped abruptly once they reached the doors that led outside, the cold breeze already causing her to shiver. Seth clutched the bag and was firm on his decision of never giving it back. “I’m not walking out in the cold without my sweats. Which is in my bag. I need them.” Diamond accidentally slapped his hand trying to grab her bag to stop him from fumbling for the zipper. “What are you doing? You’re not digging in my bag.”
“Ah, right. Right. Here.”
He shifted the bag in front of them but clutched the strap tight as Diamond pulled out her sweats. A whiff of him was familiar but pulled away to get dressed. She bent over and held onto the wall to push her sneakers through the tight material, noting how unusually quiet Seth was. The quieter the better. A win, but an unusual win. Her body shifted slightly to sneak a peek at him. He stood with his head tilted, his hair flipped to one side, his bottom lip tugged between his teeth, literally watching her struggle and put on her sweats. Or he was just watching her, the view of her ass. Something stirred uncomfortably in both the best and worst way, and it kept getting lower and lower. The look in his eyes was dangerous. He looked at her like she was something he wanted to taste. Even shook his head as if convincing himself to think otherwise while running a hand over his face.
He’s dangerous. This feeling is dangerous.
She quickly slipped on her sweats and pushed out the door, reaching it before him. “Come on.” She snapped. It wasn’t what she meant to say. She honestly can’t remember what she wanted to say, but knew she didn’t want to pull him close but further away.
His eyes lit with excitement, happy to tag along.
“This means nothing. You offered to help and I…” A hard pill to admit struggled to push out. “I could use it, I guess. Tag along if you want but no talking. I need silence.”
He promised not to talk with a silent dramatic gesture. There’s no reason to fight him on this since he seemed determined to help, and she doesn’t have the energy to fight him anymore. The quicker she gets home, the quicker she can sulk in a shower, study for a little bit to sulk again before her next class. But in that silence, the voices kept getting louder.
Notes:
— will likely come back to retouch this chapter. Editing truly is the longest process because I go through multiple rounds, and I read literally every word outloud to myself as I edit. Usually how misspelled words slip my head cause my brain automatically corrects it. To put in perspective: I started edits at maybe late 1pm or early 2pm and I'm just now posting at 12am. With little breaks since I had an off day. Also had to rewrite a good portion of this chapter bc I baby worded it to move on and come back to later, not to mention adding minor details I missed which I likely still missed again. I usually edit then come back the next day to relook it before publishing, but I just want the chapter out to be done with. It’s a first-ish draft anyway. Anyway, your girl’s got a mad headache, been staring at this screen all fucking day. I’m hibernating for the next few days. Can’t wait to see your reactions—if you do pop out—and respond to them when I come back!!!
