Work Text:
She hasn’t logged onto Nightcord in days. She can see the notification icon, but she just can’t bring herself to check what is waiting for her. Her phone is… somewhere, probably lost in her mess of a room. Mizuki thinks she hid it somewhere so that none of the Vocaloids could try and speak with her. She knows she should at least try and pretend nothing happened —she doesn’t want Kanade or Mafuyu to realize something’s off— but she can’t bring herself to face it. All Mizuki wants is for things to go back to how they were before. Is that too much to ask?
Mizuki hasn’t been doing much of anything as of late. She goes to work when she absolutely needs to, but other than that, she just stays in her room. Going to school is completely out of the question. There’s no way she can run the risk of running into Ena, so she just lies in bed all day. It’s like she’s completely run out of energy. Her room hasn’t been this messy in years. Mizuki really needs to do her laundry—clothes are strewn all across the floor, a combination of clean and dirty clothes— but she just can’t. Somewhere buried in the mess of clothes is the outfit from that day. Just seeing the outfit sends her into a panic, so cleaning it up is off of the table.
It’s really dark in her room. She keeps the curtains closed and her lights off. It makes it easier for her to sleep the days away. If Mizuki just keeps on sleeping she can ignore what happened. The lack of light makes it hard for her to see anything, which she takes as a blessing since she can’t even look at herself without crying. Her mirror has been covered since the moment she got home on that day. In a way, it’s like middle school all over again. Except this time, she is hurting even worse. She should have never gotten so close with the group. Never have gotten so close to Ena. “I'll wait for you forever.” Mizuki wonders if Ena- No. There’s no use thinking about her right now. Or ever again. She has lost everything, and it is time for her to accept that.
She’s sitting against her bed, wearing the baggiest clothes she could find. Her sweater is soft and pink, making her feel remotely better about everything. The loose clothes help her. Mizuki finds them comforting, like she’s wrapped up in a cocoon. She definitely needs to change clothes, but doing that would involve being near a mirror, and there is no way she can possibly look at herself right now. She has no clue how long she's been sitting there, but she can’t bring herself to move. Mizuki is drowning, and this time, there’s nobody to save her. She will keep sinking, and sinking an-
“-ki!” A voice breaks through her spiral.
How strange , she thinks to herself, Mizuki was home alone for the day, so who could be calling her name?
“Mizuki!”
It’s MEIKO. Mizuki looks around her room, searching for where her voice could possibly be coming from. While she searches, MEIKO continues to call for her. She finally finds her phone hiding behind her computer monitor—she can’t believe it’s not dead.
With MEIKO finally being acknowledged, they just stare at each other, neither of them willing to break the silence. She looks worried, though Mizuki doesn’t really understand why.
“Something happened,” MEIKO says in a more gentle tone than she’s used to, “Something happened between you and Ena.” MEIKO is looking at her with her usual expressionless face, waiting for her to reply, but Mizuki won’t budge. She has nothing to say to any of Nightcord, including the Vocaloids. She’s not sure why she even let MEIKO talk to her in the first place. Mizuki thinks MEIKO is still trying to say something to her, but she tuned her out, too lost in her own thoughts. Maybe she should try and pay attention to MEIKO, just one last time.
Finally looking back down at her phone, MEIKO speaks up to her, “She’s still waiting for you, Mizuki.” And just like that, it’s like someone dumped her straight into a cold lake. Her mind is racing, and a small part of Mizuki wants to believe her words. Why would MEIKO say that? It’s not like her to meddle this much. She’s probably just lying to her anyways. It’s useless to try and fix this.
