Work Text:

The crickets chirped.

the birds sang their songs.

the trees swayed, one with the wind as they danced.

The forest, hidden from human eye. A home for magical spirits and beings.

and yet, where did it all go? Where did it all end?

. . .

Tommy himself sat in the midst of the fields within the magical forest. His blond locks messy. He quietly gazed at the forest in awe, amazed still from everything. From nature specifically. He’d never had thought about the day this would all come crashing down. The butterflies fluttered away. Their small wings flapping. However one butterfly strayed away. flapping away from the rest. Tommy tilted his head, watching that one stray butterfly before shrugging.

“Tommy! “ A familiar voice called out.

tommy stood, turning around to face the person that called out to him.

The grin on his face grew wider.

there, his mother stood.

Kristin. Goddess of death herself.

tommy beamed with excitement and joy as he saw his mother. He ran off over to Kristin. immediately hugging her. “Mum!” He called out joyfully. Kristin bent down and picked up Tommy gently from the ground. Carrying him in her arms. She wore her usual black dress laced with purple flowers. Wearing her veil hat. although Tommy couldn’t see it. He could tell she was smiling fondly at him. And that just managed to make his grin ever-so-slightly grow wider.

“Have you forgotten already? “ Tommy asked, crossing his arms as he gazed at Kristin suspiciously. Who only giggled softly. “Forgotten.. what exactly? “ She teased, she knew what Tommy was talking about. “My birthday!” He exclaimed. Kristin hummed, acting like she was in thought. “of course not. I’d never forget your birthday.” She hummed.

tommy blinked, than smiled. “that’s good!” He then glanced around for a split-moment. “Mumzaaa!” He cried out in a whiny tone. “can we already start my birthday partyy?” He gave Kristin the puppy dog eyes.

Kristin chuckled lightly. “Already start? Right now? We haven’t even done the preparations for it! “ She spoke, amusement clear in her tone. “Just be a bit patient. Your birthday party will come soon. Why don’t you hang out around here for a bit? I have to go make sure Niki and Hannah are doing alright. Along with Charlie and the others. Tubbo’s gonna come soon so you can talk with him while we prepare everything!” Kristin gently set down Tommy. Leaving no room for argument as she hurried off.

Tommy huffed. “I wanna help though..” he murmured. glancing up to the sky. The birds chirped once more. Till one by one, they each flew off.

. . .

Time of day: Afternoon.
Status: a whiny Tommy currently complaining to Tubbo.

. . .

Tommy huffed. Plopping down onto the grass. Tubbo leaned over him. Poking him with a stick. “You alright big man?” Tubbo rose a brow.

“No, no I’m not Tubbo. “ he grumbled. looking like he was about to throw a temper tantrum.

“is this still about how you don’t get to help out on your own birthday party?” Tubbo asked, tipping his head to the side.

“Yeah, yeah it is. “ he huffed.

“Well.. maybe we could look at some bees or flowers to distract you?” Tubbo suggested. Tommy blinked, glancing at him. He shrugged. “Yeah sure! Maybe we could even pass by on the garden around here somewhere.. “ he sat up.

“Great! C’mon king. let’s get a move on! “ Tubbo helped Tommy up. leading him away from the field surrounded by trees as they walked off to see the bees and the flowers.

. . .

Time: dusk.

Tommy sat there, in a chair as he watched everyone get along well at his birthday party. Although he wasn’t able to help out, it did make him happy that at least everyone was gathered together. He watched with a wide smile on his face. he chatted with tubbo and some others like ranboo (albeit he wasn’t so pleased with ranboo)

Tommy hummed. He would’ve never want this moment to end! He was sure of it. Everyone he knew was hanging out. Having a good time. Everything was right and fine like it should be!

Everything was gonna be fine. Tommy was sure of it.

He glanced over to his mom. Waving. “Mumza!” He called out cheerfully. Tubbo glanced over to Kristin. “Greetings Kristin. “ he greeted with a friendly smile.

“Hello Toby! “ Kristin called out as she hurried over to Tommy. Her attention set back on him. “how do you like your party so far?”

tommy smiled happily. “It’s great ! Everyone is getting along and I’m glad!” He exclaimed. His legs kicking back and forth. “I would like to plan my next party though! “ he huffed in complaint. His mother chuckled. “Oh really? I guess I should’ve helped you with the planning but next time you will, no worries. “ She reassured. “You better keep that promise! “ Tommy pouted. Kristin cackled at the boys little pout. “of course.” She lightly patted the boys head.

“Mumza’s gotta go, I’ll see you soon. “ she straightened up, Tommy opened his mouth to say something. but his mother already walked off before he could say anything to get her to stay longer.

Tommy sighed. Kristin continued to walk. He outstretched his arm outwards like he was trying to reach for his mom, but clearly he couldn’t. He let his arm fall to his lap. his gaze lowered as Kristin left.

“Tommy?” Tubbo lightly nudged him. “not now Tubbo. “ he huffed. Tubbo shot him an understanding look. Nodding. “Alright.”

tommy stood from the chair, walking off as he looked at the ground. Leaving behind the chattering party for his birthday.

. . .

Tommy sat down with his mom, listening to her hum a soft lullaby as the two both sat in the same field surrounded by trees. The trees wavered with the wind. Kristin’s wing outstretched and wrapped protectively over Tommy. the whispers of the night almost alluring. Tommy gazed at the stars.

His eyelids fluttered closed. “Goodnight Tommy.” Kristin hummed.

tommy murmured back a soft ‘goodnight’ back.

Not once had a thought occurred to him that all this would come crashing down due to some shitty mistake he made.

Maybe Niki was right. Maybe he was a fucking coward.

Tommy didn’t think of the consequences. And nevertheless, he was far too naive and gullible to think of what he could’ve done to avoid some mistake he made.

. . .

Tommy suddenly found his past self in the midst of chaos.

oh, this wasn’t gonna be so fucking pleasant for him was it? All present tommy could do is just fucking watch his past self go through the most traumatic experience now. Because he knew full well what day this was.

Tommy ran through the woods, running as fast as he could. Getting chased wasn’t great.

it was like a game of cat and mouse. Tommy knew which one he was.

he continued to run through the forests, in a zig-zag sort of motion as he than disappeared from the pursers sight. Hiding behind trees. Tommy clasped a hand over his mouth. Letting his nerves ease. Letting himself calm down and breathe.

he was far from calm though. He wasn’t set at ease so well even with the forest murmuring soft melodies that tried to calm his nerves. He wasn’t set tense. He didn’t wanna get caught. He sighed. Hearing the leaves crunch under boots. Tommy glanced around, immediately running off further into the darkness the forest provided. And farther away from the torches and fires.

He weaved past the moons warming glow. Keeping himself concealed in the shadows.

that’s when he heard a ‘thud!’ Nearby. He pondered something. Then looked in the direction of where it came from. He squinted his eyes.

there was a small light that helped brighten up things a tad bit. He cautiously moved forward but kept his distance cause no fucking way was he going out like those horror movie protagonists.

he eventually saw a glimpse of a hat with a veil falling to the ground. And a person on the ground.

Tommy blinked. Then realized.

It was his mother.

he quickly hurried over, stepping out from the trees and darkness and into the center with his mother laid. Still breathing. “Mum!” He whispered-shouted. immediately hugging his mother.

Tommy should’ve felt happy. He should’ve felt glad that he found his mother in the midst of all this chaos.

Tommy felt something cold on his fingers. He pushed away from the hug to look at his mom then at his hands.

He blinked, his hands were covered in blood. Fresh blood. A pure crimson red kind. “Mumza…?” He anxiously called out.

”I’m sorry Toms. “ Kristin looked at Tommy.

This wasn’t right.. this shouldn’t have ever happened in the first place..

“w-why are you sorry..?” He tipped his head.

tommy barely knew what was going on. He didn’t understand why there was blood on his hands. Or why his mom was apologizing. He looked at Kristin once more. His mind didn’t register that his mom was about to die.

“I’m sorry you had to see me like this . Mumza’s gotta go Toms, to a far away place..” Kristin smiled— his mother smiled. And Tommy couldn’t get a single fucking idea on what she meant. He felt her hand gently pat his head. It should’ve brought him reassurance, happiness or gladness. But the hand was cold.

“what.. what do you mean a faraway place..? I wanna come!” Tommy complained. Almost pleading at the same time as well.

“Sorry dear, you can’t come with me. I’m returning back up there..” Kristin pointed a finger at the skies. “You’ll see me one day. But not today, or tomorrow, or the days after.” Kristin sadly smiled. “Goodbye and goodnight my dear..”

and just like that. Tommy registered the situation at hand. He realized his mother just supposedly died in front of him. He looked down, realizing he was standing in a pool of blood. His eyes grew wide. His heart began to race. “Mum..? Mumza?” He looked at his mother.

Only a stiff and limp body. Her face that was normally shadowed and covered with the veil that came with her hat now illuminated by the moonlight. Showing her. Eerily dead she looked. Her eyes were opened. Gazing into nothingness. Limp and not moving, like a puppet that was caught off from its strings.

”mum! wake up! “ he begged. His voice began to waver. He grabbed his mother and lightly shook her. “Don’t leave me..!” he cried out

The pool of blood the surrounded Tommy and his mother coated the grass in a crimson red. The lifeless look in Kristin’s eyes was unnerving. She wasn’t breathing. Tommy scooted himself away from her. Clasping a hand over his mouth. His mother’s fond smile no where to be seen. His mother’s reassuring look nowhere to be seen. Loose strands of hair fell to Kristin’s face.

tommy looked at the large gash on his mothers stomach, finally registering it in his mind.

He realized his grave mistake. He didn’t think— no, of course he didn’t fucking think. This was his fault.

Tommy felt like he was just looking at a lifeless puppet version of his mother. desperately trying to keep himself under control.

he realized the situation, the situation he had accidentally caused all cause of his trusting and friendly nature.

Everyone was a mouse. And the pursers were the cats. They weren’t gonna be captured. They were gonna be killed on the spot the moment they let their guard down for one moment.

tommy was in a nightmare. One he caused himself unintentionally.

he was at fault.

Tears formed, streaming down from his cheeks and onto his blood covered hands. A grim reminder on how his mother died in front of him just seconds ago. He didn’t want this to happen. He didn’t mean for this to happen!

tommy kept himself under control. Rocking himself back and forth as he glanced over to his mother’s lifeless body. Eerie how her eyes didn’t close. He eventually stood. He knew he couldn’t be here any longer.

and that was when his cue to leave came. Footsteps were heard, the leaves crunching underneath them. Tommy ran off. Far into the woods. Fleeing the scene.

he had to run, he had no choice but to run. He kept running and running. His legs ached. This was a fucking exercise considering how much he’s been running and hiding and running. he kept himself from sobbing, or at least. Tried to.

it was impossible not to almost bawl and curl up into a ball. Hide himself away from the world, wishing his mother was close by and curling her wings protectively over him. Shielding him from all the dangers.

but no. That was wishful thinking and he knew it.

Tommy continued to run and run, a spear just so happened to hit a tree near him. He came to a halt, catching his breath as his eyes widened at the sudden spear. He quickly turned around for a moment. Squinting his eyes as he realized there was the mortal that threw the spear. holding up a bow and arrows along with it.

that wasn’t good. None of this was good.

Tommy couldn’t move. Frozen in place and in fear. The purser fired an arrow straight at him. He tried to move, tried to flee. But he couldn’t get his own body to move.

before anything else happened. He found himself sucked into some sort of portal.

. . .

And before Tommy knew it. He suddenly awoke, jolting up out of bed.

“oh.. Jesus Christ—shitty nightmares..” Tommy muttered, taking in a deep breath. He glanced down at his hands, they shook and trembled. His whole body was shaky.

he gripped onto the bed sheets. trying to give himself some sort of comfort. He laid back down on his bed. Staring at the smooth ceiling that reminded him he was still at the Minecraft’s house.

he wished it was him that died and not his mother.
