human hybrid x minotaur gang leader & orc gang leader

Notes:

This takes place in a slightly different version of the Cyberpunk 2077 world. With all the tech and augmentation, is anyone really surprised that humans aren't the only things kicking around? Elves, orcs, minotaurs, dragons, and more roam the streets of Night City alongside humans. Hybrids are common, but human hybrids are rare. This is thanks to the fact that humans are either incompatible or hyper compatible with other species. Meaning that when humans mate with someone from another species they either won't be able to have children, or the children will either be human or their other parent's species. So human hybrids are stupid rare.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

He lay under the flimsy cardboard barrier that protected him from the rain. It was a bad day today. His bones creaked and stretched against his body. His skin burned, like something was trying to scorch its way out. His head pounded and his eyes throbbed every time he opened them. Waves of misery sloughed off him, and he did his best to send them into the clouds. Unwilling to let anyone feel this pain.

But he felt it, he felt the pain rising from the depths of his core. It's been like this for as long as he could remember. Some days he could walk, could pretend that he was nothing but a normal human. And others… Other days are this, days of no movement and pain. He could hear the sounds of the city around him. The heavy rain poured down unrelentingly. Shouts of street vendors and cars zooming by cushioned his consciousness from sleep.

Bit was thankfully shielded well from the downpour. Under a makeshift shelter of cardboard and tarp, hidden behind a dumpster and far below the overhang of a monolithic Megabuilding. It wasn’t the best place in Night City to lay prone in pain, but it was by far not the worst. The pain was so great, Bit honestly wondered to himself if it would ever go away this time. He shivered as he curled further into the jacket he’d managed to swipe from a vendor in japantown. It was one of the few things he actually owned.

The day before he’d gathered his few belongings and booked it to where he felt safe. Here, beneath the shadow of the megabuilding in City Center. He’d quickly constructed his shelter the night before, feeling an episode of pain approaching fast. He couldn’t tell you why he knew he’d be safe. He only knew that here, for at least a little while, safety would find him. He blamed the names. The names he’d carried since childhood, dancing in his mind. Sometimes the names were clearer, sometimes they were distant and muffled. The clearer the names, the safer he’d be.

Dren and Taloch, those were the names that promised safety. For the first time, they were both so close and so clear. Bit simply knew that he could rest for at least a little while. But still he forced the misery up, refusing to properly rest while his emotions continued to radiate from him. He couldn't let others feel this. So he hid, and hurt, and wept.

Hours passed, and Bit though he heard heavy footfalls nearby. His eyes still hurt too much to stay open for long. Still, he chanced a peak through the small opening of his shelter. Two absolutely huge men were looking around the alley. One was a large bellied orc with toxic green skin and a cyberware leg. His red hair braided in a faux mohawk. His two tusks jut out of his mouth capped with gold ornaments. The other was a tall minotaur, his horns replaced with some kind of cyberware that Bit didn’t recognize. The hands of the man were tanned but his furred head was pitch black. Both wore fashionable suits that Bit had seen Corpos wearing all too often. Though they’d now been absolutely soaked by the rain.

Bit whined and shut his eyes again, aching hands coming up to rub at the throbbing sensation behind them. He faintly hoped that the pair hadn’t heard his quiet keening, but that hope was soon dashed. Heavy footfalls (and hoof falls) quickly made their way over to him. He hoped that they wouldn’t beat him. Or call NCPD. Last time they’d been so rough with him, he hadn’t been able to stand for days. The tarp shielding him from view was gently moved aside. Bit counted his blessing that they didn’t seem too angry. After all, they hadn’t just torn the shelter away with him still inside.

“Shit.” A gruff voice rumbled out above him. Bit keened at the abrasive sound as he curled further under his thin jacket. “Shit ok I’m jackin’ in, call for a Delemain, babe.” The voice said in a hushed tone. He heard the click of the man’s jack and felt it plug into his neural port. Bit’s only cyberware was his neuro processing tech and his jack. He was forced to get them when he was younger, to see if that could manage his pain. It couldn’t. He could feel a diagnostic being run. It scared him. The man put a hand to his forehead, before moving to pet Bit’s greasy hair. Shushing him as the diagnostic finished. Bit hadn’t realized he’d been crying.

“No fever,” the man whispered, “and no viruses. Little guy barely has any implants.” Bit chanced another peek, and saw the orc kneeling down beside him Ruining the nice slacks he wore. He was retracting his jack into his wrist, looking back at the minotaur. He was pacing back and forth, his dark eyes glowing electric blue. They flickered back to normal as he glanced over.

“Cab’s on the way.” He said, voice far deeper and smoother than the orc’s. He strode over and leaned down as well, taking stock of Bit’s little hideaway. “We’re taking him to Tuck’s. Regular doc would throw him out.” He whispered to the orc. The orc nodded in return, looking down at Bit. His hazel eyes brightened at the sight of Bit’s own violet eyes cracking open.

“Hey there, can you tell me your name?” He whispered, still carding his thick, clawed, fingers through Bit’s hair. Bit whimpered, his eyes sliding shut again against the stabbing pain of the light. The orc shushed him again, moving to lightly massage the human’s temples. “The projections he’s giving off can’t be helping him.” the orc whispered, presumably to his companion who gave a deem grunt in response.

“Only reason we found him.” The bull rumbled, his own hands reaching over Bit and gathering up the few items hidden behind him. Bit’s panic spiked, attempting to move but the pain stopped him in his tracks. The minotaur stopped and in a gentle voice whispered to the prone human. “It’s alright. I thought you’d want these. They seem important.” Bit peeked up through his eyelashes to see his precious few belongings being carefully held by the massive man. Behind him, a car pulled up, its doors opening as if on command. A distinguished voice piped up alerting them to the car’s arrival.

“Alright, just hang onto me for a minute, ok?” The orc said, hands carefully moving to scoop Bit into his arms. Bit didn’t have the energy to protest, he simply stiffened against the orc’s form. Quickly, he made his way to the car, settling Bit into the back seat. The minotaur made his way to the other side, climbing in as the orc whispered to the cab to try and be as quiet as it could. Bit felt his legs being settled into the minotaur’s lap while the rest of him lay on the orc’s. Their combined bulk eclipsed the back seat entirely.

The pair fidgeted above him, somewhat desperately. Then, warmth enveloped him. Their suit jackets, still somehow dry on the insides, now covered Bit’s shivering form. He could smell them now, a comforting scent of masculinity enveloped him. The orc continued to pet his hair as the minotaur spoke softly on a call. Telling someone that they wouldn’t be there today. He felt the minotaur lean over to whisper to the orc.

“I told Skips that we were busy, so we have all day to deal with this, Dren.” he said. Bit’s breath hitched. His body stiffening, a strange hitching feeling he didn’t understand bubbling in his chest. The orc seemed to perk up, making Bit realize that he was still projecting his emotions out. The orc’s gruff voice gave a relieved sigh.

“Think he’s starting to get that we’re tryin’ ta help, Taloch.” the orc, Dren , whispered back. Bit’s body sagged in relief, a weight he never knew he had been flung from him. He curled closer into the pair, his face buried in the folds of Dren’s shirt. Talach’s calloused hands reached down to rub at Bit’s chilled ankle. The quiet, the soft pattering of the rain on the roof of the car, the gentle touches and warmth. Bit finally found himself slipping into darkness. The only thing he felt was safe safe safe safe safe safe SAFE.

Consciousness returned to him slowly. Bit struggled against it as he felt the pain crash into him again. Though now lessened by some degree. He was able to stir, and open his eyes in the dimly lit room. The room was dark, only illuminated by a few colorful lamps. They slowly shifted between colors and released vapor that smelled of lavender.

Bit looked down to see himself lying in a reclined chair, a blanket over him. He could feel a jack plugged into his neural port. A spike of panic washed through him. As if on command, a voice piped up from behind him.

“Shit, you weren’t kidding.” It said, faintly garbled by cyberware, “empathic projection. That ain’t gonna help none.” The sound of wheels rolling towards him preluded the appearance of a heavily augmented man. His eyes were replaced by goggles that adjusted and zoomed of their own accord. His legs and arms were completely replaced by prosthetics, seemingly made for fine detail work. The man left his chair and strode over to a lavish cabinet. Inside were accessories and trinkets of all kinds. Bracelets, bangles, chokers, rings, and more. After a few minutes of deliberation, the man plucked a lavish collar from where it was displayed.

Fear crept up Bit’s spine, and he didn’t have the energy to reign it in. A heavy hand fell to his shoulder. Bit sluggish looked up to Taloch giving him a reassuring smile. The minotaur shifted his gaze to the man, clearing his throat.

“What exactly is that, Tuck?” He asked. His hand rubbing soothing circles against Bit’s shoulder.

“Right, sorry.” the man, Tuck, responded. His goggled gaze landed on Bit as he explained slowly and deliberately. “This is an empathic field dampener. The way you’re projecting right now has no control. It’s draining you before you can rest. Gotta put a stopper on it so you can get some energy back.” He said, motioning to the collar. Bit let out a breath and gave a shaky nod. Tuck slowly approached, slipping the collar around Bit’s neck and latching it in place. The outside was a deep black with circuits running through it, while the inner surface was lined with soft faux fur.

The ripperdoc readjusted the thing, bringing the side with a metal ring to the front and pressing a button near the back. Bit felt a slight humming sensation for a moment before he suddenly sagged in relief. Taloch and Dren’s hands quickly moved to steady him back into the chair. He felt the change instantly, his emotions no longer drowning the room.

“There we go, that should help.” Tuck said, turning to a screen nearby that seemed to display vitals that Bit didn’t understand. “Oh yeah, looks like he was projecting those emotions with absolutely no way to stop besides being passed out.” Tuck turned to the trio, goggled clicking and readjusting. “That wasn’t restful snoozin earlier, that was a proper exhaustion fueled faint. Should be able to actually recover and sleep with that on.”

Bit knew he should probably try to communicate somehow, but with the pain receding somewhat and the sudden release of the pressure that seemed to always be there. He was just so tired. His eyes were fluttering shut. Just as he felt himself slipping, Dren’s voice cut through his daze.

“Hey, gotta stay awake for a little bit longer.” The orc said, almost regretfully, “Doc’s gotta run a few tests before you sleep.” Bit struggled to keep his eyes open but managed a sluggish nod. Dren and Taloch sagged with relief of their own at a sign that he’d understood them. Tuck, for his part, was still scanning away at the information appearing on the screen. He slowly, deliberately, reached over to inspect Bit’s eyes. Carefully moving his eyelid up to see their color properly. He then inspected his dirty hair.

Despite the grime, it was obvious that his hair was pale and had an odd coloration. But with how mussed it was, it was difficult to tell exactly what. Bit protested with a quiet whine when Tuck moved his lips apart to check his teeth, tiny fangs glinting in the low light. Tuck nodded, humming an affirmative to himself.

“Looks like you’ve found yourselves a hybrid.” He said definitively. Bit looked to his savors to see shock and confusion pain on their faces.

“We thought he was human.” Dren replied. If Tuck had retained his human eyes, his expression would have been one of pure incredulity.

“A human with that level of empathic abilities? Uh huh, right.” Tuck muttered, turning back to the screen. “Human hybrids are rare, but they exist. Trouble is, most of them tend to have some serious physical problems. This one is no different.” He turned the screen to face the trio, Bit’s eyes protested at the light. Taloch seemed to notice, his large hand smoothing Bit’s hair back soothingly.

“What kind of problems? What’s wrong with him?” The minotaur demanded. Tuck held his hands up in mock surrender.

“Easy boss, ‘m gettin there.” Tuck responded. He pulled up information tabs on the screen that Bit struggled to understand. “Looks like that projection was just part of it. Little guy has a major energy buildup that his body simply isn’t equipped to handle. Probably part magic somethin. I can see about putting together some basic plans to mitigate the flare ups of pain but without more info and invasive tests.” Tuck shrugged, tapping the desk. “No other way to say it, gotta figure out what kind of hybrid he is. I don’t got the equipment for that. Gonna have to find a specialist that you can trust. Gonna warn ya though, I’ve been hearing some rumors outta westbrook that the demand for human hybrids in the market has gotten pretty damned high.” Tuck said, disdain clear in his voice.

Taloch snorted his disapproval while Dren’s firm grip tightened on Bit’s shoulder. The minotaur moved away from them, eyes flickering blue before beginning to speak with someone in a heated tone. Dren, still clutching Bit’s shoulder, turned to Tuck and spoke in a determined voice.

“Get together what you can for the pain and something to help him sleep. We’ll take care of the rest.” his gruff voice carrying authority. The cyborg gave a mock salute and left the room, yelling for someone to get things ready. Bit looked up at the orc, tears beginning to well in his eyes. The urge to sleep was too great to fight much longer, but through the haze he finally managed it.

“Why?” His voice was quiet, and rough from disuse. But it was enough. Dren’s eyes snapped to his in an instant. Taloch had stumbled, muttering that he would send more details later as he made his way over. They both looked down at him with so much hurt in their eyes. So much pain that Bit simply didn’t understand. The minotaur’s calloused hand caressed the human’s cheek. Bit felt himself leaning into the touch, desperate for affection.

“Because,” Taloch choked out, “we felt your pain.” The thought hit the pit of Bit’s stomach, as he realized his fears had been warranted. Someone had felt his suffering. But…

But they’d come to his rescue. They were safe . His eyes drooped closed, as he nuzzled into Taloch’s touch. Bit slipped into blessed sleep.

Chapter Text

Bit was so incredibly warm. From all sides warmth and softness met him. He’d never been quite so comfy before. He must have been dreaming, but he didn’t really care. Light streamed onto his face, making Bit’s nose scrunch up as he attempted to bury his face into the softness below him. A deep chuckle rumbled above him, causing Bit to peek out from under the covers. Taloch was crouched nearby, a soft smile on his face. His hand slowly reached out to pet Bit’s hair. Bit tried to stop his initial flinch, and felt his face heat up when the minotaur paused.

“It’s alright little one.” Taloch rumbled, “You’re quite safe here.” He carefully sat his rough hand on Bit’s cheek. His calloused thumb rubbing soothing circles just above the hybrid’s lip. “I’m sorry to wake you, but we thought you might enjoy a bath. Dren is just finishing with it now.” The minotaur said quietly, as if trying not to startle him again. Bit’s eyes lit up at the thought of a warm bath. For years the only bathing he had the chance for was in the river or when it rained. Unfortunately that water wasn’t exactly what you’d call clean.

Bit nearly fell to the floor with how vigorously he nodded. Ignoring the lingering ache in his joints, he began scrambling to remove the heavy blankets that covered him. Taloch let out a surprised laugh and helped the struggling hybrid free himself from his cocoon. Bit tried to reign in his excitement as his bare feet touched cold wood. Taloch was there to steady him as he attempted to right himself. He was embarrassed to find that he only just came to the Minotaur’s chest when they both stood up.

To try and hide his blush, Bit let his eyes wander around the room. It was a rather large living room, with stark white walls and a warm colored wooden floor. A holoscreen was placed atop the mantel, which had a roaring fire going underneath. Banners and tapestries of all sorts decorated the walls. The couch, which he’d been laying on, was large and plush. Upholstered in a nearly black leather with countless throw pillows of varying patterns.

His shame nearly seared him from the inside out when he noticed the white sheet and light colored blankets that had been set out over one section of the sectional. The pillow and sheet were stained with dirt, and the blankets were ruined. His gaze shifted to the space behind the couch. The entire wall was glass, and Night City was laid bare before them. A terrace and garden were being soaked by the still falling rain. They were very high up. Bit could see the megabuilding he’d been seeking refuge under not too far away, blocked by the tops of several buildings.

“Come on little one” Taloch prompted, a hand on Bit’s back guiding him further into the home. They passed by several things that Bit wanted to investigate. A tank of water and fish. A large instrument of some sort. But soon he was faced with a large shiny room. In it was Dren, testing the water of a shower with his hand. He wore a large graphic tee and soft looking pajama pants. He turned to look at them as they entered, and the orc’s face lit up in a grin.

“Hey there, sleep ok?” He asked, concern lacing his tone. Bit nodded, shyness coming back in full force. The orc’s bulk was truly on display as he too stood, towering over the hybrid, though still shorter than the minotaur at his back. “I’ve got the shower nice and warm. And there’s a chair inside you can sit on.” Dren motioned to the clear glass door of the shower. Within was a sturdy plastic chair already soaked behind the quickly fogging glass. Taloch’s hand rubbed soothing lines down his back.

“Do you think you’ll be alright in the shower without help?” The minotaur rumbled. Bit’s face erupted in a blush. He forced his gaze to the floor and managed a jerky nod. This only earned him light chuckles from his hosts. “Then we’ll leave you to it. Have your shower, then you can enjoy the bath.” Taloch said, motioning to the other side of the large bathroom. A bathtub built into the wall was filled with steaming water and fragrant oils. Several bottles and containers sat nearby.

“Feel free to use the bubble bath and soaks. I think the epson salt will do you good.” Dren said as he approached the smaller man and ran a hand through his hair. Then he was alone. Standing shakily in the large bathroom, steam quickly beginning to fog up the room. Bit took a deep breath, shedding his dirty clothes and walking over to the imposing booth of a shower. Before he entered, he remembered the collar, still snuggly fastened around his neck. The soft fur on the inside would surely be ruined.

He hesitated a moment before removing the collar. The clasps came free with a loud clack. He laid it gingerly on the counter, feeling his emotions surging out. At the moment, a mixture of nervousness and hope. Bit was trembling as he returned to the shower. Hoping and praying that his emotions wouldn’t distress his seemingly benevolent hosts. Or worse, anger them.

His trepidation instantly melted away when his hand passed through the warm water. Tears in his eyes, Bit collapsed into the chair, noting that it hadn’t accumulated any of the steaming water in its seat. The water washed over him, rejuvenating him in a way that water never had before. Though any time Bit had been caught in the rain, he felt a surge of peace. This was something different. Soothing, calming, more than that it was cleansing. Bit ran his hands through his hair, feeling layers of dirt and grime peeling off of his scalp. He glanced to the side and saw three sets of bottles. Two were all closed and separate. The third set was open, releasing faint scents of flowers and honey. A small note, now somewhat damp, was taped to the wall.

for our little guest. ~

Bit reached out, reading the labels. With a moment of hesitation, Bit poured an ample amount of sweet smelling shampoo into his hand and began to lather it into his hair. Thick suds blocked his vision as he scratched his scalp with soapy fingers. It was amazing. He tipped his head down and let the brownish suds run from his hair. Be repeated the action three more times before the suds were finally clean and white.

Then it was time for the conditioner. It had been years since he’d not had tangles in his hair. The thought of smooth silky, clean hair had him pouring the substance directly onto his head. The entire bottle was emptied and scrubbed into his hair. He left it in, letting the chemicals do their work as he took a small loofah left out by his allotted body wash. It smelled just as floral, and Bit delighted as he scrubbed away the grime on his body. It was easy enough to wash most of his body and face, though standing from the chair made his joints protest as first.

Soon he was cleaner than he had ever been. Though his hair was still bunched up like a crown with conditioner, Bit shut the shower off, and nervously opened the door. His clothes were gone, and by the door was a large fluffy looking towel and a small pile of clothes. Bit paid them no mind for the moment, in favor of slowly approaching the still steaming bath. The water was faintly flower scented, and even a little sparkly.

Bit carefully lowered himself into the blissfully warm water. He looked to the little table of solutions. Dren recommended epsom salt? Bit recalled, reaching out to open the bag. He shrugged and upended the bag into the water. It was an odd sensation at first, but the salt soon melted into the water. Then, he grabbed a bottle of sweet smelling soak, like honey and cream. That went in too. Finally there was a thicker substance in the bottle. This one was dark purple and smelled of flowers. In it went. And as it entered the water and dissolved, huge patches of bubbles and suds formed on the surface.

Bit was mesmerized as the sparkly nature of the water seemed to transfer to the bubbles. Bit could feel his muscles relaxing as he eased back into the bath. His head hit a pillow-like cushion, seemingly made for the bath. He was so comfy. Bit lost track of time in that warm sweet smelling room. The steaming water blanketed by the bubbles. It was only when the water began to cool off a little that Bit forced himself to sit up again. He remembered the conditioner in his hair, and decided to hip his head under the water.

His fingers ran through his hair easier than silk. After a minute, Bit emerged from the water, His hair silky smooth and smelling of all things sweet. Bit felt around for the drain, pulling the plug and letting the water drain from the bath. He got out of the bath, and grabbed the fluffy towel. Drying himself off, and attempting to dry his hair without tangling it. As he did, Bit caught a glance of himself in the mirror.

He was thin, too thin. Bruises littered his arms and chest, marring his pale skin. His bright purple eyes were framed by dark circles and bags. He apparently had a split lip. But for the first time in ages, Bit saw his real hair color. His hair was somewhat prismatic. A base of pure white, with the light shining off of it in pastel colors of every sort. Purples, blues, oranges, pinks, and greens danced and fought each other for dominance on his head. His narrow nose and thin lips had plenty of small scars adorning them.

Bit shook himself, and finished drying his hair. He walked over to the pile of clothes. A pair of socks and underwear that were only slightly too big on him. Then there was the comically large shirt. It was black, with a strange design on the front that Bit didn’t recognize. He felt lost in the expanse of fabric. Eventually he found the neck hole. It was such a large garment, that Bit had to let one of his shoulders stick out of the neck hole in order for it to stay on. The hem reached past his knees, but it was warm and soft. Finally, he replaced the collar, noting that it seemed to have been cleaned a little. Possibly when his clothes had been replaced? As it clicked back into place, he felt his emotions recede back into himself.

Bit gripped the front of it as he exited the bathroom. Something smelled amazing. Bit wanted to follow his nose, but it seemed his previous episode left quite the impact. He had to steady himself against a wall as he made his way down the hall and back into the living area. At once he noticed that the place he’d been resting had been cleaned up. In its spot was Dren, watching something on the holoscreen. He perked up when he saw Bit, quickly shutting off the screen and nearly running over.

“Hey there, you look,” Dren paused, swallowing audibly, “better.” He finally decided on. “How do you feel?” Bit thought for a moment, noting how Dren didn’t make a move to touch him, simply hovering nearby. Realization struck him sharply. Dren was trying not to scare him. He wanted him to feel safe. Safe safe safe safe safe SAFE

“Better.” Bit replied, his voice still a little rough from disuse. Dren’s eyes sparkled, and his grin was downright infectious. Bit returned the smile carefully. Then something struck Bit, he wasn’t panicking at the lack of his things. That was… different. Bit cleared his throat, bridging Dren back down from the clouds. “Sorry, where are my things?” he asked. His voice trembled as he spoke. Dren’s gaze softened as he held out a hand for Bit to take. Bit leaned against the Orc as he was led down another hall. Several doors lined it, though they stopped at one of the first ones.

Dren opened the door to reveal a bedroom. The bed was large and soft looking. It was nestled i-nto the corner of the room, away from the windows. Bit recognized the blankets and pillows he’d been snuggling. Now completely free of dirt and mess. On the headboard was his jacket, draped over the bedpost. The windows had thick curtains over them, the room itself lit by the soft glow of a salt rock lamp. On the table beside the bed were his other treasures. A little crystal tower, a sizable geode, a plush dragon, and a small patch of crochet blanket.

“Now, why don’ you lay down, you look like you’re having a little trouble right now.” Dren said kindly, leading Bit into the room and to the blissfully soft bed. The bedding smelled clean and was wonderfully warm. The arc helped him recline back on the bed, sitting up but oh so comfy. Bit saw that across from the bed was a TV, and on the other side of the door was the entrance to a closet as well as a desk with a chair.”This was a guest room, but if you want it it’s your room for now.” Dren smiled as he helped Bit into bed.

“Why?” Bit asked, unable to stop himself. Dren gave him a sad smile, running his fingers through bit’s still damp hair.

“Cause we want to.” he replied. “Now, Taloch should be done with lunch soon. We’ll bring it here for you and then we’ll talk. The remote is on the table if you wanna watch somethin.” Dren said, before sauntering out of the room. It didn’t take long for him to return with Taloch in tow. The minotaur wore a robe over patterned pajamas. He paused in the doorway, gaping at Bit. The hybrid took to partially hiding his face in the blankets before Taloch managed to shake himself.

Dren reached over Bit to the wall, pulling out a tray that had been built into the very wall itself. It came to rest over Bit’s lap, perfectly level. Taloch sat down a steaming bowl of noodles and a tall glass of juice.

“Eat, little one, but eat slowly.” Taloch warned, “the doc said that the meds you’re on could make you nauseous.” Bit nodded, eyeing the soup ravenously. He managed to show some semblance of control as he ate. It was amazing. Far better than the scraps he managed to find or was given when he was really desperate. “Now I think introductions are in order.” Taloch rumbled. “My name is Taloch Wellman, and this is Dren.” He said, motioning to the orc who gave a goofy wave.

“Um, hello.” Bit mumbled around a mouthful of noodles, “I’m Bit.” He swallowed and looked down at his now empty bowl. Huh, Bit though, confusion clear on his face, I thought there was more. Dren carefully moved the bowl away, inching the juice closer and placing a pair of pills beside it.

“Painkillers and something to help you sleep.” Taloch explained “You can stay as long as you need to. It’s no trouble, Bit.” They both gave him such kind smiles. Bit barely hesitated as he popped the pills and downed his juice. It was very sweet.

“Now get some rest little guy.” Dren said cheerfully as he returned the try to its spot and gathered the dishes. The pair made their way out as Bit began to feel sleepy. The warmth, the bath, the soft bed, his full belly, and the medication were all targeting him at once. Before Bit could let his anxieties overtake him, he was sound asleep.

Dren got to work with the dishes. It was a rule, if one of them cooked, the other cleaned up. That was the rule and Dren was sticking to it. It took all of his power not to cream into a pillow and run to him and Taloch’s room to take care of a rising issue. He was blessedly saved when Taloch spoke up.

“Fuck he’s cute.” The minotaur rumbled, collapsing into a chair.

“Thank you!” Dren shouted, quieting down as Taloch shushed him. “Right, sorry. But fuck babe, he’s so fuckin’ cute! His hair, did you see his hair?” Dren gushed, waving sud soaked dishes around wildly. Taloch rose from his seat and gently guided his husband’s hands back to the sink,

“I know love.” He murmured. “I also know that he is way too thin, and very weak.” Taloch moved back to the table, pulling open his laptop to begin furiously typing away. “I asked Tuck and Reed to look into candidates for an actual doctor. I’m also going to do a little research on malnutrition treatments.” Dren finished up his chore and took a seat beside Toloch.

“We’re gonna have to approach this real gentle like.” The orc sighed. They both knew exactly what the other wanted. Now they just had to build up trust and the health of their target. They shared a kiss before breaking away to see to their own tasks. This would take time, and they both knew they simply couldn’t rush things.

Chapter Text

Bit was uncertain as to exactly how long he’d been in the safe place. He’d eaten more times than he had in the last month, and had regular baths. He was helped around the apartment and the garden by either Dren or Taloch whenever he needed the bathroom or some fresh air. Most of the time he was encouraged to rest. The collar allowed for Bit to rest properly. For the first time in years he wasn’t just passing out from exhaustion. He dreamed, which was a surprise to say the least. Dren encouraged him to watch tv whenever he was bored. Taloch, upon discovering that Bit couldn't read, brought him work booklets and sat with him while he worked.

Bit still had trouble voicing his concerns, and especially his needs. Thankfully, the pair were often around and came to understand his subtle cues. When he and Taloch weren’t working on his lessons, Dren would be there commenting on shows and movies he'd put on. Bit would often wake up from another nap to see one or both working on their laptops or talking quietly on the phone. They would spare him small smiles, bring him food, and settle back into their comfortable quiet.

Over time, Bit could feel excess energy building up within himself. He only took the dampening collar off to bathe or shower, every other moment it prevented his projections from escaping. It became easier and easier to get to the bathroom and back. On sunny days one or both of his hosts would accompany him to the terrace garden. The warm sun and smell of flowers drowned out the din of the city below them. It was on one of these days that Bit realized what the energy was doing. It was early in the morning and there was a pleasant wind blowing through the city.

Taloch had been sitting with him, working on his laptop while Bit sunbathed. Bit could feel the energy thrumming under his skin. He was mentally following the energy as it flowed through his limbs. When the silence was suddenly broken.

“Fuck! It’s freezin’!” Dren exclaimed as he walked out onto the terrace. Taloch snorted in amusement.

“It isn’t that bad.” He chuckled. Bit peaked open an eye from where he lay in the grass to see Dren bopping Taloch between the horns, a blanket in his arms.

“You gonk! You’ve got fur, he doesn’t!” He exclaimed. Taloch looked horrified, like he’d just realized something obvious as Dren quickly made his way over to Bit. Bit sat up leisurely and smiled. Dren seemed to pause for a moment, but Bit was distracted himself. He wasn’t cold in the slightest. The energy buzzing through his veins warmed him from the inside out.

“It’s ok. Not cold.” He said, somewhat haltingly. Both Dren and Taloch looked stunned. Bit was only in one of Taloch’s tent sized shirts and a pair of boxers. His breath was clearly visible as he spoke softly. But he didn’t shiver. His skin practically glowed in the sunlight. Dren closed the distance between them, his rough hands finding their way to Bit’s.

“You’re burnin’ up Little Bit.” He mumbled in concern. Taloch closed his computer and quickly made his way over. He draped his suit jacket over Bit’s shoulders and the pair helped him stand.

“Let’s get you to bed, I’ll call Tuck.” Taloch rumbled. Bit was hurried inside, and buried beneath a mountain of blankets. A mug of hot tea shoved into his hands. He felt that this was maybe a little overboard but he was far too comfy to voice his concerns. After a little while of blissful comfort, the door to Bit’s room slid open to reveal Taloch escorting Tuck into the room. With them was a short woman dressed in black leathers. Bright green hair done up in a pair of buns.

“Hey little guy, this is my sister, Nip.” Tuck greeted, jabbing a finger at the woman. “She knows magic shit, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt none.” Nip gave him a beaming smile as she pulled out a small pile of books from her bag. The pair settled into a few chairs provided by Taloch. Bit was content to let them poke and prod with various tools. Blinking lights and little pinches were barely noticed around the refills of chamomile. The only majorly intrusive thing was when Tuck jacked in to check on Bit’s vitals. After some time, the pair were putting their things away and Nip was leafing through a rather old looking book.

“Well,” She began, her confident voice filling the room, “Everything seems fine. He’s giving off heat but his internal temperature is within normal levels.” Tuck busied himself with typing out information on a keyboard on his arm. Humming and muttering theories to himself. “How often do you take off the collar?” Nip asked. Bit felt his face heat up at being addressed. He cleared his throat before trying to respond.

“Once a day. Shower.” He replied. Nip nodded, flipping through the book again before landing on a page that caught her attention.

“It could be chi.” Nip mused, looking to Bit with an interested glint in her eye. “I’d like to look into getting some semblance of control over your projections. That way you could turn it off and on without having to rely on the collar.” She shifted her gaze to Dren. “If it is chi, then it’s building up due to lack of use.”

“Is that dangerous?” Dren asked. Taloch immediately moved over to comfort the stressed orc. Nip shook her head with a smile.

“Not necessarily. It just means that it will find other ways to emerge. It’s better to get control over it before that happens.” Nip said, shooting Bit a reassuring glance.

“It also means that whatever the little guy is mixed with is inherently magic.” Tuck muttered, finishing up is data entry. “Probably need to find a specialist for this. We’ll speed up the search.” He said, moving to leave the room. Taloch and Dren nodded, the latter leading the pair out of Bit’s room and down the hall. Bit could make out a hushed conversation but not what they were saying. His attention was grabbed by Taloch sitting beside him on the bed. The minotaur shifted him to lean against Taloch’s side. Bit melted into his side, sighing contentedly.

“I’m sorry.” Taloch rumbled. Bit shifted to look up at the larger man, confused. The bull gave him a weak smile. “I probably should have thought more about how cold it was. If it wasn’t for your chi … You would have been freezing. I could have gotten you very sick.” He said. Bit still felt confused. He was safe with them. They were safe. This place was safe. Bit looped his arms around Taloch’s middle, letting the blankets fall from his shoulders, and squeezed. He felt Taloch’s breath hitch, but relaxed when his hand moved along Bit’s back.

If Dren was maybe a little jealous when he got back, well that wasn’t Taloch’s problem. If Dren also maybe took several pictures for later use… Well that was neither here nor there.

Chapter Text

Bit was enjoying himself immensely. Sure, he had absolutely no idea why Dren and Toloch were showering him with gifts today, but he wasn’t complaining. Dren brought him a lovely stew that warmed him to the core, hot chocolate, and a large box of assorted chocolates. Bit had only ever had the cheap stuff he could swipe from vendors every now and again. This was a whole other ballpark. Every single one had different filling and were rich beyond belief. Toloch had warned him to only eat a few at a time to start.

Toloch had also provided him with chocolates and some fruit flavored gummies that tasted of kiwi and mango. Both of them had also buried him in new plushies of varying sizes. A pair of gigantic bears holding hearts in their paws, a ridiculously soft and fuzzy unicorn, and a giant creature somewhere between a beaver and a duck colored bright pink. Bit snuggled with his new treasures and found himself dozing off. It was as the haze of chocolate and comfort was settling over him that Dren and Toloch sat a large vase on his desk, and arranged a ludicrous amount of curling red flowers in it.

“These are called roses.” Toloch rumbled. “They are for you, from the both of us.” He gave a warm smile as Dren sat another steaming cup of sinfully good hot chocolate on Bit’s bedside table.

“Also,” Dren said excitedly, “While we were grabbing those, we found this!.” The orc, with a grand flourish, produced a huge spire of crystals. Near the base was a large cluster of deep red gems, and from them huge points of pale pink crystal pointed towards the sky. Bit’s eyes sparkled as he turned the heavy stone in his hands. Pausing his enraptured examination of the sparkling surface, Bit beamed at Dren and Toloch. The pair instinctively clutched their chests and each other’s arms, but Bit was far too distracted with arranging his new treasure with his other crystals.

Despite his excitement, Bit could feel the edges of his awareness being tinted by the familiar ache. His hands and feet becoming achy as his limbs began to feel heavy. Reluctantly he settled back into his bed, holding the bright red unicorn to his side as he settled. Dren and Toloch glanced at him in concern.

“Ya alright little Bit?” Dren asked, moving to sit on the edge of the bed. Bit nodded, taking a sip of the slightly spicy sweet chocolate.

“Feeling sore.” He said haltingly. Still getting used to speaking again after so long going without. A bolt of curiosity struck him as he settled in for a rest. “Why?” Bit asked, motioning to the various presents.

“Today is… a day to celebrate people you care about.” Toloch explained, avoiding eye contact. Bit smiled at the thought.

“Thank you. Care about you both too.” Bit said. He didn’t see their reactions as he snuggled into his pillows and let himself rest before the pain really set in. Dren and Toloch stumbled from the room, both sporting deep blushes.

“He’s gonna be the death of me.” Dren muttered into Toloch’s chest. The minotaur could only nod in agreement. The pair shook themselves, having plans of their own for that night. Dressed up and cleaned, the pair waited for Bit to fall asleep before heading out to their favorite restaurant. There they feasted on rare steaks, oysters, a small army of sides, and for dessert a decadent slice of cake they shared. While they ate, the pair talked at length. Catching up on projects their enterprise had been working on. Updates on the progress of the soup kitchen. Then it inevitably led to odd things Bit had done that one of them hadn’t had the chance to see.

Then it just kept rolling from there. They discussed the updates to Bit’s growing medical files that the doc siblings had been compiling. Then they moved on to how cute their little guest was, and how gentle he was with the plants on the terrace garden. How when he snuggled up to either of them on the couch it was like having a tiny heating pad curled into their sides. How his eyes sparkled when he tried a new food he obviously liked. How they wanted to just bundle him up in blankets and hold him when his pain got particularly bad.

“We really need to get better at communicating our feelings to him” Toloch sighed, finally broaching the subject. Dren huffed and shoved another bite of cake in his mouth. But he gave a hum of begrudging agreement as he did. Toloch chuckled at his husband’s antics. Getting him to admit that they’d had feelings for each other had been like pulling teeth. “He’s smart, and will figure it out once he’s acclimated to, you know, not being on the street.” Toloch reasoned.

“I know, I know.” Dren groaned. The orc hid his face in his large arms before suddenly popping his head up in realization. “Maybe we can look up ways to confess!” He exclaimed. Toloch couldn’t resist tilting his head in confusion. All that earned him was a snort of amusement from his partner. The minotaur’s glare seemed to sober him up.

“I am begging you to make this easier than when we were dating.” Toloch deadpanned. “We simply need to be more forthwrite about our affections. I probably could have explained the importance of valentine’s a bit better.” Dren gave him a lecherous grin as he responded.

“Could always practice those explanations on me, maybe explain a few other things.” The orc purred as he waggled his eyebrows. Toloch nearly choked on his wine as he fought a snort of laughter.

“Is that a sign to finish up so we can get a room?” Toloch gasped out. Dren, with a smile that could blind the unprepared, raised his arm and shouted.

“Check please!”

Bit was drifting in and out of sleep when he decided to watch something. Everything showing was revolving around very showy dates, exclamations of love, proposals, the giving of ….

Wait…

WERE THOSE ROSES!? Bit’s thoughts went wild as his eyes were glued to the screen. Watching countless people exchange heart shaped cards, boxes of chocolate, roses of various colors, having dinner and kissing deeply. Sometimes escalating to far more. His eyes darted around the room.

Roses… check.

Chocolates… check.

Plushies HOLDING HEARTS… check.

Oh… oh no.

Bit’s cheeks heated and practically glowed with a blush. Rain began to slam against his window as realization struck. Oh no, his shorts were tight. Oh… oooooooh no. Nope, not dealing with this! Bit thought as he downed his sleeping meds, shut off absolutely everything, and buried himself under his mountain of blankets. He saw his strange pink beaver duck, blushed again, and buried his face in its soft body. Before sleep could claim him, he only had one final thought.

I’m in trouble.

Chapter Text

Bit woke slowly, and for the first time in weeks wished he hadn’t. Every twitch was agony. Moving was out of the question. Opening his eyes was only marginally better. The light felt like a long rusty needle being driven into his iris. Bit groaned, turning his face into the pillows in an attempt to block it out. His bones ached and his muscles screamed. He hadn’t experienced a day like this since that day in the alley. Bit had, perhaps foolishly, hoped that he’d seen the end of days like this. Outside, the sunlight began to fade as a peel of thunder cracked the sky. Bit shuddered as another bout of pain rippled through his body. He was unsure how long he stayed like that. The sound of the storm outside was his only indication that time was even passing.

At some point in his daze, they’d found him. He could hear them whispering to each other as they tried to move quietly around the room. Bit was sure that the sight of a huge orc and an even bigger minotaur tip-toeing around would have been rather funny. That is, if he could bring himself to turn his face from the sanctuary of the pillows. Bit keened quietly as Dren gently tucked a soft blanket under him. Taloch quietly whispered reassurances as he eased Bit’s head from the pillows. A warm cup was brought to his lips. It smelled heavily of spices and herbs, a broth of some kind. With gentle coaxing, Bit sipped the savory mixture. The savory taste broke through the veil of pain. There was a mild spiciness to it as it slid down his throat. It warmed him from inside out, sending resounding sensations of comfort to his aching joints.

“There we are,” Taloch whispered at his side as he eased the mug away. “Now have some water and a puff of medicine.” the minotaur brought a cup of blessedly cool water to his lips. It was gone in a few desperate gulps. A familiar inhaler was brought out next, and Taloch helped him through the process of breathing in the medication. Pleasant floatiness accompanied the dose. His aches and pains began to slowly dull. The whole time Taloch continued to coax him into drinking more broth while Dren methodically massaged away the agony in his hands and feet.

He was warm. He was safe

It was still raining when Bit woke again. His eyes had been covered by a sleep mask that he didn’t know they owned. It smelled faintly of lavender and was achingly soft against his face. He’d been folded into the blankets with great care, and soft music played from the holoscreen speakers. His body was not nearly as sore as before. The throbbing in his limbs and pounding in his head had diminished to a dull ache. He never had warmth and comfort on days like this. It was nice. Bit began to lift himself up, and was quickly aided by Dren. Bit removed the mask to see the orc somewhat disheveled. The chair he’d been sitting in toppled to the floor behind him.

“Easy there, Little Bit.” Dren soothed. He brought another steaming mug to Bit’s lips. He drank gratefully, relishing the rich flavor of the broth. “Tal ran to the store to grab some stuff but he’ll be back soon.” Dren said. Bit must have looked confused, for Dren chuckled and explained. “We’ve been watching over you in shifts.” Bit felt a nagging feeling in his gut. One that wormed its way through his body and mind. Leaving an uncomfortable coating of doubt and anxiety deep within.

“Don’t need to. Will be ok.” Bit said quietly. A look of great sadness fell over Dren. He kneeled down and gently took Bit’s hands in his own. His blunt claws grazed his skin lightly as he massaged Bit’s hands with his thumbs. Bit looked up at Dren through his bangs. His gaze lingering on the orc’s hazel eyes. The intricate dance of brown and gold was captivating. As was the affection evident in them.

“You don’t have to go through this alone anymore.” Dren said, voice dripping with concern. Bit couldn't quite place the warmth that bloomed in his chest at the admission. Soft thunder rumbled outside. Bit tore his gaze away from those hypnotic eyesDren squeezed his hands gently before pulling away. “I’ll be right back, gonna getcha some more bone broth.” He rumbled, moving in to quickly peck Bit’s temple. Bit froze as Dren walked out of the room. Dren had kissed him. Fleetingly, and almost as a second thought. But still, his lips had grazed his skin. That warmth intensified into an inferno in his chest.

A loud crash of thunder from outside startled Bit out of his trance. It had been very close by the sound of it. The power flickered slightly as the backup generators whirred to life. Bit took a moment to breathe. He was unsure before what Dren and Taloch’s feelings for him were, but if this was any indication. What did that mean for him? Could he even think of anything like that while his body continued to hate him? The rain picked up again, pounding against the window with unprecedented force. His pain was slowly subsiding, far faster than any other flair up day he could recall.

Dren swept back into the room with a fresh mug of broth. Bit accepted it gratefully. He sipped at the soothing soup as Dren righted the chair. He continued to tidy up around the room as Bit savored his broth. It wasn’t long before he felt sleep tugging at the edges of awareness. With his pain subsiding and a belly of warm broth, he allowed himself to truly relax. Bit eased back into the pillows with a contented sigh.

“That’s it, just rest.” Dren said as he moved over to tuck Bit in. “I’ll tell Taloch that you're sleeping when he gets back.” Bit nodded gratefully. The rain was a mere sprinkle against his window as he slipped back into sleep.

Dren was doing his best not to have a heart attack. He wasn’t sure what had come over him, but he’d done it. He’d kissed Bit. To be fair he’d kissed his forehead in passing, and it hadn’t registered until he was halfway to the kitchen, BUT STILL . Taloch was going to be so jealous he hadn’t been the first to kiss their little guest. Dren repeated the memory in his head as he left Bit to sleep. The entire way to the kitchen he couldn’t get the thought of his tusks brushing against soft skin out of his mind.

Dren served himself some of the bone broth that Taloch had made. He was mid sip when Taloch returned, arms laden with bags. The pair quickly fell into a comfortable rhythm. Passing things to one another and organizing their new haul. It mostly consisted of a few new blankets for Bit, plenty of bubble bath and fine smelling incense, and comfort foods to be placed in Bit’s designated cabinet.

“So… I kissed Bit.” Dren said quickly as he buried his face in the cabinet, pretending to look for something. He heard the distinctive sound of the minotaur choking on his drink. After a minute of coughing Taloch collected himself, walked over to Dren, placed a hand on his shoulder, and…

“Without me!?” The minotaur bellowed. Dren was quick to shush him, hurriedly explaining that their guest was asleep. Taloch huffed out a breath through his nose and stalked over to Bit’s room. Dren followed behind him, fretting the entire way. Quiet as a mouse, Taloch crept into the room, leaned down by Bit’s bed, and placed a soft kiss to his cheek. The minotaur then stood up, and briskly walked past a stunned Dren. The orc quickly followed Taloch into the bathroom, where he was filling up the sink with cold water. He methodically detached one of his cyber horns, then the other. Then, with purpose, Taloch dunked his head into the freezing water. He came back up with a gasp. His clothes were absolutely soaked.

“What are you doing?!” Dren shouted, scrambling to drape a towel over the minotaur’s dripping head. Taloch groaned as he began to dry his fur. When he showed his face again his eyes were somewhat distant and his ears were practically red.

“I haven’t felt this flustered since before we started dating…” He muttered distantly. Dren couldn’t stop the laugh that escaped him, even when it earned him a light hearted glare. He continued to chuckle as Taloch toweled himself off. At least, as dry as he could get himself.

“Come on ya big dork, let's get a bath ready for the little guy fer when he wakes up.” Dren said before placing a chaste kiss on his husband’s lips. The pair fell into a comfortable silence as they drew a hot bubble bath teaming with pleasing scents and oils to help drain away the pain of the day. As they were finishing up, Taloch perked as his eyes flashed blue. He excused himself to speak to whoever was calling. Dren paid it no mind, making his way to Bit’s room. He entered just in time to see the little hybrid stirring. The orc was struck dumb at the sight of Bit’s opalescent hair glimmering in the light of the setting sun. It shone through the window to frame Bit’s head in a halo of golden light. Dren shook himself back into some form of composure.

“Hey there Little Bit, have a good snooze?” Dren asked with a grin. Bit returned it with a serene smile, nodding his affirmation. Dren helped Bit to stand, leading him out of the room and down the hall. Gently explaining that there was a bath and shower waiting for him. Bit preened at his side at the mention of it. Dren nearly tripped at the trilling purr that escaped the smaller man. Another thing to mention to any doctors they found. Once they reached the bathroom, Dren left Bit to his own devices. He decided to go and find Taloch. He didn’t have to look long, as the minotaur bounded up to him with a face splitting grin. Before Dren could react, he happily (and loudly) exclaimed.

“Snips found a doctor for Bit!” He said. Dren beamed in return. Finally, progress.

Notes:

I'm sorry for the delay everyone. A lot has happened.
I lost my job again thanks to my health issues, and my roommates threw me out. I briefly travelled to IL to try and stay with friends but that didn't pan out so they paid to send me back to TN. I am staying with my friends temporarily but I am essentially homeless as of now. I'm on the waiting list for section 8 housing but I don't know exactly how long the wait will be. I have a gofundme going but it hasn't had much traction.
I also have my emergency commissions open but those haven't had much attention either. In the meantime I'm trying to get on disability, saw a new doctor who referred my to a neurologist, and I've been drawing a lot. I'll put links to my socials below if you want to see any of that. :3

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the new chapter!

Chapter 6: Chapter 6

Summary:

Bit finally sees a doctor, and answers are given. Whether they like them or not.

Chapter Text

Bit was struggling to punch down his growing anxiety. He hadn’t been more thankful for his collar since it was first given to him. If Dren or Taloch could feel even a fraction of his emotions they’d barricade him in the apartment and never let him leave. As it was, Bit had become rather tired of hiding. He wanted to understand himself, and the city he’d been surviving in for so long. When they arrived, Bit found his eyes wandering around the expansive hospital. Smooth white walls and stale air made the place feel so detached from the living. Illuminated signs pointed the way to the hybrid specialty clinic deep in the bowels of the building.

Taloch kept a strong hand against Bit’s back as they walked down the hallways. Dren led the charge, his hand wrapped around one of Bit’s as he tugged them along. The footsteps of the trio echoed off the sterile environs. Making a shiver run up Bit’s spine. The waiting room wasn’t much better. Completely empty save for the three of them. Bit sat sandwiched between his escorts. Taloch’s blunt nails clacked against the arm of the chair. Dren’s leg wouldn’t stop bouncing. Bit had a strange feeling that their anxieties were nearly matched by his own. Taloch handled the check in, and filled out the paperwork with input from Bit, but some of it was so fuzzy. Bit surprised himself when he was called back. He told them he wanted to go alone.

“Are you sure Bit?” Dren asked anxiously. Taloch looked concerned, but decided to keep silent. Bit, shaking slightly, simply nodded. He gave them the best smile he could muster up, and followed the nurse back. It had been such a long time since he’d stepped foot in a doctor’s office. He simply drifted along, allowing the nurse to do their tests and take down information. He was somewhat startled when They spoke directly to him.

“So, Mr. Bit. Do you have a last name that you know of?” They asked. Bit finally took a moment to look at them. A human, with bright green hair and slightly glowing eyes. They gave him a kind smile. Bit cleared his throat before speaking, knowing that after this his throat would be sore.

“Not that I know of.” He said, feeling unsure. They nodded, jotting down information on their clipboard.

“Alright, and here it seems we only have a speculatory age, of roughly twenty-five. Does that sound right?” They asked. Bit thought for a moment, going back over his time on the streets, his time with the Tyger Claws, his time in the orphanage. He shook his head slightly before looking to the floor.

“I think I might be a little older than that.” He muttered, “It gets a little fuzzy after a while, but I left the orphanage at sixteen.” He glanced up to see the nurse looking at him with such pity. His eyes darted back to the floor, unwilling to see it.

“Alright, do you think you can give me a summary of your symptoms and any possible abilities that have manifested?” They asked. Bit allowed himself to breathe for a moment, grounding himself in the moment before listing off his pains and aches one by one. His days where he couldn’t move. Where his eyes refused to open. Where his bones felt like they were alight with cold fire. Then he moved on to his oddities. His projections and the strange heat he seemed to make.

“Ok, that should be plenty. If you’ll wait here for a little while, the doctor will be right with you.” The nurse said, raising from their seat and leaving the room. Bit sat in the clinical room, feeling unnerved. It reminded him too much of the facility. Cold, barren, lonely, and with the only sound being distant footsteps and the buzzing of the lights. An eternity seemed to pass before a light knock at the door startled him from his memories. The door opened a moment later to reveal a tall, plump, man with round glasses and a slightly strained smile.

“Hello, I’m Dr. Ruzvine. Lovely to meet you.” He said, his voice somewhat dispassionate. Without looking at Bit, he sat down and looked over the papers on his clipboard. “Well let’s see. No prior medical history. A rough age estimate of late twenties. Signs of bodily stress and burgeoning magic.” His gaze snapped to Bit, causing him to flinch. “Now you mentioned you left an orphanage at the age of sixteen. I also have information that you were located in an alley by the Mr. Minos-Warwicks. Now would you care to fill in some of the blanks between those two instances?” He asked. Bit struggled to find his voice, but eventually managed to choke out a few sentences.

“I… I was taken in by a sect of Tyger Claws. For trafficking.” Bit said, his voice heavy. “I was there for five or six years I think. I got away. Been on the streets since.” Bit concluded, forcing his eyes down again. The question made him feel disgusting. Memories of what those people did to him, tried to do to him. He struggled to force those memories down. He could hear the scribbling of Dr. Rizvine’s pen on paper. Taking down the information with the grace of a computer. The doctor launched into long winded explanations that Bit only half-listened to. The various tests he wanted to do, including a full blood screening for potentially transmitted ailments. A small skin sample, blood samples, saliva samples, hair samples, and other specimens that made Bit wrinkle his nose in distaste. It didn’t quite hit him how frightened he would be until the nurse returned with a cart full of vials and syringes.

“Wait!” Bit found himself shouting, his voice already becoming gravelly from so much use. The nurse (Nurse Lucant they informed him) paused mid stride, staring at him with wide eyes. “Sorry, but can you please get Dren and Taloch?” He asked nervously. His stomach was no longer butterflies, but raging wasps. Ice filled his veins and static invaded his thoughts. Nurse Lucant gave Bit a small smile and nodded, calling into the hall to someone else before stepping fully into the room again.

“They’ll be right here.” They said, “Would you mind if I get some things set up? I’ll explain what exactly I’m doing if it will help.” They asked, their faintly glowing eyes shifting in hue ever so slightly. Bit couldn’t quite tell if it was an implant or natural. Bit nodded, picking at the soft fabric of his oversized shirt. He felt so remarkably embarrassed about having to call his… roommates? Protectors? Friends? Dren and Taloch. The gentle voice of Nurse Lucant helped somewhat. It distracted him enough for the moment. They would get the worst of it over with first. A few vials of blood and a small sample of his skin. Then they’d swap his mouth.

It was during the explanation that Dren and Taloch arrived. Dren nearly crashed into the door as he rounded the corner, followed shortly by Taloch. They were welcomed into the room by Nurse Lucant before they continued with their explanations. They offered Bit a cup of water as Dren settled down in the chair closest to the bed. Taloch made himself comfortable leaning against the wall nearby. Bit was instantly soothed by their presence. The thought of the tests not seeming quite as bad. After the skin sample, they’d ask him to go pee in a cup, then swab his mouth and take him to another part of the hospital for scans. He wasn’t sure what an MRI or an X-Ray were exactly, but they were quickly explained to him by Taloch with a patient cadence.

The thought of all of those strange machines, and dark spaces gave him a deep feeling of dread, but if it would help him. Dren’s rough hand cupped Bit’s, his thumb rubbing gentle circles on his palm. It was nearly five hours of  discomfort and prodding. Loud whirring of machines right by his ears and listening to doctors and nurses talk about him as if he couldn’t hear a word. Eventually, Bit found himself sandwiched between Dren and Taloch in the same room they’d taken his vitals at the beginning of this. He was nibbling on crackers that the nurse had given him. The tests were over, and thanks to technology that Bit really didn’t quite understand, the results would be back any minute.

“It’s alright Bit, after this we have a great dinner planned and you can relax.” Taloch rumbled, his hand closing around Bit’s. Bit nodded, still embarrassed about having to ask for their company. Supposedly, someone his age should be able to see a doctor alone. A light knock at the door drew the trio’s attention. In came Dr. Ruzvine, seeming just as detached as he had before. He sat down heavily, glancing over the results of the tests. He made quiet grunts and hmms of thought long enough for the trio to begin exchanging confused glances. Bit surprised himself again by clearing his throat.

“Ah, yes.” Dr. Ruzvine said, turning slightly to face them. Bit noticed him eyeing where Dren and Taloch’s hands were clasped around either one of his. “Well, it seems that according to our tests, Mr. Bit, you are at least part dragon.” He said dispassionately. His words hung heavily in the air, weighing down Bit’s shoulders with a force he didn’t before know could exist. Taloch’s grip tightened on his hand and Dren stared slack jawed down at Bit. Bit chanced a look at the orc to see wonder dancing in his golden eyes. Bit felt his face heat up and he quickly directed his gaze back to the bored looking doctor across from them.

“Several parts of your skin have nearly imperceivable scales that seem to be slightly tougher than human skin. Your hair is naturally opalescent, similar to eastern dragon scales. In addition, it seems that you are intersex, with a form of genetic variant that is commonly seen in dragons.” As he continued to drone on, Taloch and Dren moved their arms to support Bit’s shoulders. Bit was shaking, though he wasn’t certain when he’d started. Dr. Ruzvine produced a pamphlet and held it out for Bit to take. He was far too shaken to move, and was relieved when Taloch reached out to take it.  1He didn’t give the trio time to breathe before continuing.

“Now, dragons possess a great deal of magic, or they did in the old days. Modern dragons rarely possess magic anymore. It has become a lost art.” He said “However, hybrids have a knack for unlocking previously closed genetic branches.” Dr. Ruzvine scribbled some notes down and for the first time in the entire visit looked Bit in the eyes. He seemed to startle a moment before clearing his throat.

“Based on some of the blood work, we measured a great deal of magical energy built up inside of you. Your body is mostly human, but you are putting out energy equivalent to what our oldest records of dragons could.” Dr. Ruzvine directed his gaze to Taloch and Dren, and Bit couldn’t help but feel like the doctor had decided he was no longer a part of the conversation. “Now, I posit that the draconic energy stored in a mostly human body is overwhelming it. Causing the majority of the pain. In addition a lack of control and clear signs of trauma.” He concluded.

Bit could feel his bones aching as it was described. His pain boiled down to too much power, energy his body simply couldn’t handle. It was almost comical. So much power at his fingertips, power that could have saved him so much earlier than he had been. Power that only caused him pain. Tears stung the corners of Bit’s eyes at the unfairness of it. Years in a hellish orphanage. Years more used as a plaything by horrible people. Then years on top running and hiding, stealing scraps from garbage bins to eat. All that time suffering day in and out from pain that wracked his body. Pounding in his head and daggers in his eyes. All because he had draconic power that could have been used to protect himself. It wasn’t fair. Dren pulled him into his bulky side, not flinching when Bit turned his face to hide it in his shoulder. Taloch’s other hand rubbed soothing circles in Bit’s back, as he continued to hold his hand in a firm grip.

“Now, I would recommend a psyche screening to treat general anxiety disorder as well as signs of post traumatic stress disorder. More tests will need to be conducted over time to determine what is the result of genetic disorders, his hybrid physiology, or physical trauma.” Dr. Ruzvine said. “Now, there is a general treatment plan for hybrids experiencing excess energy reserves. In addition we will be putting in referrals for a neurologist, psychologist, and possibly a few more specialists.” He looked at the trio without an ounce of pity as he finished with a final remark. “Many would find such a treatment plan overwhelming, in terms of financial strain…” He was cut off mid-sentence by Taloch’s aggravated voice.

“You don’t need to worry about that, in the slightest.” Taloch growled. Bit was startled at his tone, but one look at the stormy expression on Dr. Ruzvine’s face chased away his doubts.

“Well, Mr. Minos-Warwick, with all due respect. Caring for the medical needs of a hybrid human can be extremely taxing. The price of some of the general treatment methods can cost several thousand eddies.” Ruzvine snarked in response. Bit’s mind boggled at the number, thousands of eurodollars for a single treatment. He wasn’t worth that, he was certain. Dren seemed to notice his tense dimenor. The Orc suddenly rose from where he’d been sitting, staring daggers at the doctor.

“What the fuck is wrong with you asshole?” Dren demanded, startling everyone in the room. “You drop a huge info bomb on us, ignore your fucking patient, then try to scare us with high pricetags?” Rizvine tried to interrupt but was cut off by a booming curse in orcish and two frightening glares from Dren and Taloch.

“Know what? Thanks so much for your shitty ass help, for freaking out our … Bit. But we’re gonna find a doctor who doesn’t get his rocks off at fear mongering his patients!” Dren yelled, his thunderous voice seeming to make the room shake with his rage. Taloch helped Bit to rise and escorted him from the room. Bit caught both of them flipping the doctor off as they left. Taloch paid for the visit, and the pair stormed out with their arms protectively encircling Bit. When they left it was pouring rain. Bit was quickly ushered into the waiting car, finding himself wrapped in Dren’s hoodie in the back seat.

He was in a daze the entire way home. When exactly had he started thinking of it as home? He wasn’t sure. But it was, well more accurately they were home. Dren and Taloch were home, or so he’d thought. The thought of them spending so much time, money, effort, all for him. On top of everything they had already done. He didn’t want to think about how expensive that appointment had been. With all the tests, poking, prodding, machines. Then there were the gifts. The hearts. The roses. The kisses. He knew about those too, and relished the memories of the gentle touches and kind words. He couldn’t do this to them.

Dren and Taloch assured him that they’d find a better doctor for him. That everything would turn out just fine. Dren still looked at him with eyes swimming in awe. Taloch pulled him into a true hug, that Bit couldn’t help but return. They ate a meal of pan seared fish and greens. Afterwards, Bit found himself sitting in the shower, washing away the day’s grime.

The rain was heavy that night, tearing through the streets. It flung itself down and soaked even the riverbed with its ferocity. The wind howled and lightning streaked through the sky. Bit laid in bed for hours, waiting for the apartment to go quiet. The thunder shook the ground every few minutes as Bit decided on what he needed to do. He shoved his crystals and charms into his backpack. Along with the rose quartz spire Taloch and Dren had given him. A small pillow and two blankets. One from his time before and the other given to him by the duo. He quickly dressed in his pajama pants, a t-shirt, Dren’s hoodie, and a new pair of sneakers. Finally, he ensured his collar was firmly in place.

Bit stopped by the kitchen to stuff a few handfuls of granola bars into the pockets of the bag and hoodie before taking one last look around the apartment. The fish swimming in their tank, not bothered in the slightest by the squall outside. The instrument he’d learned was a grand piano. He had gotten to hear Taloch play a few days before. It had been entrancing. He’d miss it. He’d miss them. Quietly, he slipped into their shared room. He hadn’t dared step foot in there before. It was sparsely decorated, with simple art on the walls and long black curtains covering the windows. They both lay in bed. Taloch on his side, and Dren on his back with a strange machine covering his nose and mouth.

Bit crept through the room, stopping by Taloch’s side of the bed first. Admiring his sleeping features. He had removed his cyberware horns, which lay on the bedside table. Bit held back tears as he leaned down to place a kiss on the crown of Taloch’s head. Lightning flashed as he walked over to Dren’s side. The machine was loud, and muffled Bit’s sniffles. He placed an equally soft kiss on Dren’s temple before silently slipping out of the room. The heavy rain smothered out the noise of Bit slipping down the hall, and into the elevator. Soon enough he was walking quickly from the lobby and into the squall. He looked back only once before disappearing down an alley and into the night.

Thanks so much for reading folks.

I'm gonna be working on this, Three and One, and a few commissions, so updates may be a little sporadic.
I'm going through the shit as well, so that may impede my work sadly.
