Chapter 1: A Proposal
Chapter Text
-November-
Columns of kosugi cypress trees towered up toward the sky as if they were the very bridges connecting the earth to the heavens. Their outstretched limbs were so massive that they seemed to beckon all creation to climb them - or at least that was how it seemed for one blond ninja from Konoha. Clad in the red scarf she had repaired for him, Naruto pulled Hinata along by the hand, giving her a thrilling smile as they dared to get lost amongst the monstrous trees.
It was a crisp day, and unseasonably cold. The pale light of the afternoon sun easily penetrated the canopy and illuminated the earth, even as a fine layer of frost dappled the ground. Together the young couple crunched across the soft soil, careful to avoid the saplings in an otherwise undisturbed nursery ground. The pair had ventured out together to explore the haunting solitude of this forest, more than half a day’s jaunt from the village gates. The agenda for their mission was entirely romantic in nature, and these large trees, being hundreds of years old and well-acquainted with lovers seeking refuge in their shelter, remained the only silent observers of their affections.
Like drunken fools they wandered the sacred grounds. Hinata staggered among the roots, hand-in-hand with Naruto in an ardent kind of dance. On occasion, they collapsed against a trunk, so overwhelmed by passion they had to embrace one another in worshipful abandon. Eventually, their aimless exploration led them to an ancient pillar: a gnarled yakusugi tree with knots bigger than their own heads. Naruto stumbled into its thousand-year-old base, pulling Hinata against him and catching her in another clumsy kiss.
Eighteen-year-old Hinata stifled a girlish giggle at the endless attention of his mouth. Like him, she would be nineteen in just over a month, but still shy of two decades compared to this multi-centuries-old tree. She touched it reverently for a moment, admiring the texture and fragrance of its bark. Naruto, however, was not here for the trees. He nuzzled his nose against her neck and pinched her rear.
How long had she dreamed of this attention? Would he adore her this way forever?
Intoxicated by his advances, she fell into another deep kiss, and he turned to press her body against the unyielding tree. “You are so beautiful,” he whispered, trapping her with his hips, setting her aflame with his lips. “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” she murmured against his jaw. Naruto's answering sigh threatened to undo her.
The light was fading, and they would need to make camp somewhere among these centenarians, but the ground was unforgiving here. Glancing up, Naruto smirked as an idea took root. Without warning, he scooped her up into his arms and made her squeal when he ascended the tree like only a shinobi could.
Hinata held fast to him as he leaped upward, and leaves like needles snagged in her hair as he scaled its heights. She could feel the muscles in his arms straining with the work, making her heart skip with desire.
They perched at the top where the yakusugi branches were bare. It appeared deceptively dry and dead at this height, but they knew the old tree flourished below. They could see for endless lengths out across an evergreen sea, but no one could see them here except the birds. Hinata was helplessly transfixed by the view and its beauty.
“It's stunning,” she told him in a whisper.
The fleeting sun’s light made his face glow back at her, and she felt stupefied by his glorious smile. “Like you,” she added, barely able to speak.
Staring intently into her eyes, Naruto eased her back against a tangle of barren boughs. The danger of falling from here was hard to ignore, but harder still to deny were her own urgent pangs of yearning. She felt helpless to resist the desperate twinkle of hope in those blue, blue, blue….
He stretched his body out across hers to take her in another restless kiss. Their own limbs entwined like those naked branches. Her white eyes went wide with the contact, knowing exactly where this might lead, but he crushed her lips with his and moaned in a way that made her respond in kind.
He risked releasing his hold on the tree to tangle both of his hands into her hair, trailing mindless kisses over her neck and jaw. Her body was so feverish with need that she hardly registered the cold lash of the wind. Was this the moment? Was now the time?
Perhaps the universe decided for them. Their combined weight must have caused their makeshift nest to give without warning because Naruto toppled over her head when a terrible crack sounded. Hinata squeaked with terror as she felt her top half follow, but she had the good fortune to hook her knee on a sturdier branch to catch herself. Hanging upside down and grappling for a hold on him, Hinata only caught glimpses of blond hair and bewildered eyes as she gasped his name.
The breeze whipped bitterly against them as they stared at one another in shock. How did they get here, inebriated by mortal peril and undeniable want?
More soberly, they clambered back into safety. They were still clothed and had their dignity intact, cradled together in the bones of the behemoth. But while Naruto didn’t exactly have any shame, he did feel a measure of regret for taking such a risk.
“I’m sorry,” he told her breathlessly. “I shouldn’t have. It’s just… I- I want you.”
Her own breath caught in her chest, half laughter, half crazed sob of unfulfilled desire. “I want you, too, Naruto-kun.”
He took a ragged inhale, smelling her hair. “The same way? Like I want you?”
“Y-yes.” She was dizzy with this admission, or maybe their brush with death. Or both. “I do.”
Naruto’s breath was hot against her ear. “You shouldn’t have told me that.”
He kissed her more fervently than ever, and she straddled his lap, the two of them still dangling precariously from the height of the tree. The wind hissed by, disgruntled that they hadn't learned their lesson.
“But I want you for more than this,” he reared back, desperate to explain, to justify himself. “So much more.”
“As do I,” she agreed, gripped by a fierce foreboding that something was about to happen.
“Hinata, I’ve been thinking about asking you this every single day since we started dating, but it just seemed too soon to be appropriate.”
“Asking me what?” She thought she knew what he was going to ask her, and she didn’t think she had the resolve to deny him at that moment. But he surprised her by going a step further, and his question wasn’t what she expected.
“I want to marry you.”
A soft sound escaped her. He clung tightly to her wrists, as if she might tear out of his grasp and plummet to her death on purpose at his confession.
“I- I know we’re young, but Hinata, I’ve never been more sure of anything.”
Tears pooled in her eyes of their own accord, and not just because of the cold wind biting at her cheeks.
He licked his lips, glancing down at hers with hunger in his eyes. He kissed her briefly, but chastely, and continued. “I want to be with you like this, every single day. But I also want to build a home, a future, a life with you. I’ve always wanted a family, and… I want you to be my family.”
She nodded, but he leaned in closer with sadness in his voice, murmured against her temple.
“But I don’t have much to offer you. Only my love.”
It was enough. It was more than enough.
“What do you say, Hinata-chan?”
He had no ring, but he didn’t need one. She would have said yes to him no matter the token, words, or gestures. They sealed the promise with another passionate kiss, leaving Naruto aching for more and Hinata blushing with longing.
“I am in your care.”
After they had climbed back down, Naruto marked the base of the yakusugi with a kunai, carving their names to join countless others in the fragrant flesh of the trunk. That thousand-year old tree was the only living witness to the vow they made that day.
“You did what?”
Naruto narrowed his eyes at the Rokudaime, who lay stretched across his chair like he was half asleep. “You heard me, Kaka-sensei. I asked Hinata to marry me.”
Kakashi sat up a little straighter, scratching his head. “Seems abrupt.”
The blond man crossed his arms. “We have been dating for almost a year."
The Hokage shrugged. “But you’re both so young.”
Naruto bristled. “So?”
“Well, what did she say?”
“She said yes. We’re engaged.”
“Congratulations.”
Neither man said anything else for a long moment, staring at one another expectantly.
“Was there more?” Kakashi finally relented, propping his chin on his palm with boredom.
Naruto practically wiggled in place. “Well, I- I don’t know what to do next.”
“Next?”
Naruto exploded on his Hokage in a fit of rage. “I’m trying to ask for your help here, okay?! Hinata comes from a prominent family, and I dunno, aren’t there expectations? Isn’t there some kind of protocol for this?”
Kakashi’s lazy countenance remained unaffected by his outburst. “Protocol?”
Naruto threw up his hands. “Oh, forget it!” he snarled, spinning on his heel to vacate the premises.
The Rokudaime sighed heavily. “Wait, Naruto. Wait.”
The blond froze at the threshold, throwing his old teacher a glare of grotesque proportions over his shoulder. Kakashi leaned forward to prop both elbows on his desk and fold his hands together. “You’ve really thought this through?”
Naruto rolled his eyes. “Yes.”
“You love her?”
Naruto turned to face his Hokage defensively. “Yes.”
“She’s not pregnant?”
Naruto squeezed his eyes closed, looking pained. “No!”
Kakashi sat and stared at him as if he were a most uninteresting, bland bowl of rice. Naruto squirmed in place, but he didn’t move from the spot.
The Rokudaime finally sighed and straightened from his broody slouch. “Fine, I’ll help you. We can’t have you botching this.”
Naruto cocked a brow at him, but offered his wary thanks.
Kakashi nodded. “Have you discussed a date?”
Naruto shook his head. “No, but I’d marry her tomorrow, if we could pull it off.”
“You can’t,” Kakashi told him bluntly. “Unless she’s pregnant.”
The blond frowned at him, but tried not to rise to the bait. “She’s not pregnant,” he asserted through clenched teeth.
Kakashi’s droopy-eyed gaze never wavered. “Relax, I believe you,” he said, resting his chin on his hands as he considered. “Traditionally the wedding takes place within 6 months to 1 year of the proposal,” he droned as if reading from an instruction manual.
Still pinched with anger, Naruto's face morphed with dismay. "It wouldn't be improper to push for 3-6 months,” Kakashi amended.
The blond gave a terse nod as if this were still a disappointment. “Whatever it takes,” he said tightly. “We want to do this right.”
Kakashi gave another shrug. “Well, there isn't one right way for everyone. It just depends on the couple.” The Hokage tilted his head, considering. “Do you actually want a wedding?”
Naruto only looked confused. “Yes?”
“You do know a ceremony is not required to legally marry her, right?”
"Well yeah, I'm not that stupid, ya know." The Rokudaime's face was doubtful, but Naruto moved on. "I know Hinata's not particular, but actually, I-" Suddenly the young man took on a boyish shyness, and he went a little pink with the confession. "I actually always dreamed of having a formal ceremony."
Naruto might not have seen it, but Kakashi smiled fondly beneath his mask. "Is that so?"
"And a big reception," he added with a tentative smile. "I want everyone to come."
The Hokage gave a hum of consideration. “Right, then. There will be a lot to do, but I can keep your mission roster light.”
Naruto blinked at his old sensei with surprise. “Oh. Okay. Uh, thank you.”
Kakashi rummaged briefly in his desk for a small parchment, then handed it out to Naruto. “First, you both will need to fill this out and sign it,” he directed. “Turn it in at the registration desk downstairs as soon as you can, and we can go from there.”
Accepting it warily, Naruto skimmed it over to see that it was a marriage license application form. He tucked the scroll into his pocket dutifully. “Anything else?”
Kakashi pointed at him. “Don't get her pregnant.”
“Kaka-sensei!”
“For now, just save your money,” Kakashi told him with a wink. “You’re going to owe me lunch.”

Chapter Text
-December-
As the days grew shorter and the nights grew colder, Naruto longed for Hinata's company more than ever. Knowing they would be married in the coming months made each parting a little easier to bear, but only a little. It also helped that there was so much to do and plan for: it gave Naruto more excuses to show up at the Hyuuga Estate, frequently unannounced. But their engagement also had the unfortunate consequence of making them as busy as ever - and in the constant company of others. They had venues to visit, calendars to consult, and so many decisions to make.
Kakashi-sensei wasn't kidding when he told Naruto to save his money. Weddings and all their attached obligations were apparently more than just expensive - they were daunting undertakings that seemed to consume his energy, time, savings, and then his income faster than he could earn it. And that was just for the greeting meals. Lots and lots of meals.
As was customary, Naruto and Hinata treated her immediate family members to a private dinner in order to impart their intentions to marry. Hinata's father and sister accepted her invitation to meet for barbeque with more than a little suspicion, so naturally, neither of them appeared surprised by their news when it was delivered. Hanabi was delighted regardless, and in turn, Hiashi stoically invited Naruto to his residence for tea at the end of the month. To Naruto, this felt more like scheduling an interrogation than an offer of hospitality. Still, he accepted his future father-in-law's summons with what Hinata later assured him were proper measures of respect and enthusiasm. Well, if it was appropriate to show any enthusiasm for his impending castration, Naruto didn't know it.
Having no living blood relations would have normally meant fewer obligations for Naruto's side of the family, but ironically this was not the case at all. He not only had an abundance of friends he considered close enough to be his family, but most of them were jōnin, and they were all extremely busy. Meeting in person to break bread meant planning several individual lunch meet-ups instead of one or two formal dinners, and as such, the budget often required home cooked meals. Hinata was happy to make accommodations, and so they spent much of their time together in the kitchen.
The first lunch involved treating their Hokage to his favorite saury and miso dishes to celebrate their engagement. Naruto had attempted to help his fianceé, but his presence was merely moral support since he lacked any real cooking skills. The Rokudaime arrived at the Hyuuga residence in cheerful spirits since he was already aware of their plans to marry, but Hinata's delicious cooking had left him in the best mood Naruto had seen in him in ages. The man was positively euphoric as Naruto escorted him to the gate.
"You do not realize your good fortune," Kakashi accused Naruto, jabbing a finger in his face. "That woman is priceless!"
Naruto concurred with a belch. "I only wish I had realized it sooner."
The Hokage nodded sagely, giving his protruding belly a satisfied rub. "Maa, I should have married her myself!"
Naruto made a face. "That's just weird. You're too old for her!" he groused.
Kakashi waved this accusation away with a laugh. "What? Feel threatened?" He asked with a waggle of his eyebrows before he swept his arm out to encompass the Hokage monument the distance. "Alas, it is too late for me. I am already married to this damn village."
Scoffing at this, Naruto's eyes scrutinized each of the faces carved into the cliffside. Sure enough, the two latest likenesses were leaders who had not married or had children of their own. At least, not yet.
Naruto pursed his lips and shoved his hands into his pockets. "Did you ever think about getting married, Kaka-sensei?"
The Hokage's hooded gaze remained focused on the path ahead of them. "Mmm, I did."
The blond quirked a brow at him. "Really?"
"Don't sound so surprised," the Rokudaime quipped back.
"So why didn't you?"
Kakashi glanced briefly to Naruto, but all he said was, "There were many reasons not to."
Naruto gave a shrug and made a mental note to ask more about this later.
Iruka-sensei was next on their list of people to meet, and since his favorite food came from Ichiraku, it only required Gama-chan, who was woefully thin these days. Still, Naruto footed the bill, and when Hinata had told him their happy news, Iruka was exuberant until a thought occurred to him.
"Have you set a date?" he asked.
Hinata shook her head. "Not yet," she answered. "But we are hoping for this spring!"
"Oh dear," Iruka despaired with a scratch of his head. "I have much to do between now and then to make Naruto a suitable husband!"
Hinata tinkled with laughter like a bell, and Naruto rolled his eyes.
Sakura was slammed at the hospital, as usual, so the pair delivered her favorite dish in an unremarkable paper bag between her rounds. When Hinata had disclosed their intent to wed, the kunoichi had crushed her in an elated hug before rushing off to another surgery, stuffing a dumpling into her mouth along the way.
Their news spread like wildfire after that. Kurenai-sensei, Shino, Kiba, and Shikamaru were all already aware of their engagement by the time their luncheons could be scheduled, and soon every ninja they came across offered their unsolicited congratulations. Ino approached Hinata about wedding flowers, and Choji accosted Naruto about the catering. Even Tenten and Rock Lee chattered excitedly with them in the road about their plans.
But one important person simply wasn't in the village.
The subject of Sasuke was a delicate matter, but it was one with a straightforward resolution. As much as Naruto wanted him to be there at his wedding, Sasuke's presence would no doubt elicit scorn from many of the guests. While Hinata had readily agreed to suffer any contempt they incurred on themselves for associating with the infamous Uchiha, neither she nor Naruto wanted Sasuke to feel burdened by it. Knowing Sasuke well meant knowing that he would internalize any shame his attendance might bring on his hosts, but worse might be the guilt sustained by refusing their invitation so as to avoid disgracing them. Naruto had resolved to spare him of the pressure entirely by not inviting him to the wedding. A simple letter sharing the news would suffice, even if it pained him to withhold an invitation.
But brevity was Sasuke's gift, not Naruto's, and finding a way to share his heart on a tiny curl of parchment was downright debilitating. His joy was so profound, Naruto felt he could scream his affections for his bride-to-be for hours on end, but he was no poet. He'd nearly pulled all his hair out with frustration, agonizing over what to write. There were too many words and not enough space to be so concise, and there was no need to put it in code; soon enough the whole world would know anyway.
In the end, he scrawled three sentences across the scroll and sent his news went skyward, in the care of Sasuke's hawk.
I wish you were here so I could tell you in person. I love Hinata Hyuuga. We are getting married.
That same day, the hawk returned, and Sasuke's infuriatingly curt reply certainly tracked: Good.
It was as good a blessing as he could expect from the man he considered both his rival and best friend.
Finally, the 27th day of December had arrived. There was a bounce in Naruto's step and an infectious grin on his face, even more than usual. The frigid, rainy weather could do nothing to dampen his happy mood because today was Hinata's birthday.
It was already dark when he was finally free to pay her a visit. Carrying a large box under one arm and an umbrella in the other, he strolled in the direction of the Hyuuga compound. The package was wrapped rather haphazardly in lavender paper and trussed with a white ribbon. The bow was only a little crooked, and the card, in smudged ink, read: To my Love, From your Fiancé.
He was greeted at the door by none other than the birthday girl herself. She gave him the most endearing smile.
"Hinata-chan!" he exclaimed in a sing-song, holding the box out to her. "Happy birthday!"
Her pearly eyes went wide with delight. "Thank you! Oh, please, come in."
She tried to take the box, but he held on tightly to it. When she blinked up at him in confusion, he gave her a playful kiss on the nose, causing her lashes to flutter with surprise. "Naruto-kun!"
"You're too adorable to be nineteen," he teased. "Are you sure you aren't getting younger?"
Shaking her head, she drew him inside to the kitchen where they shared so much of their time in the last few weeks. She placed the box on the counter and offered him a hot drink, which he gladly accepted.
"I was hoping I'd get to see you today," she confessed as she set the kettle to boil.
"I've been anxious to come all afternoon," he gushed, leaning against the butcher block. "I thought I might never get away from Iruka-sensei."
"He's still adding to your studies, I take it?" she asked, fetching a cup for tea.
Naruto snorted as if this were an understatement. "Yes. He's insufferable."
"Surely not."
"If he's not berating me about village taxation and inflation rates, he has me scrubbing toilets and dishes!"
She turned to him with a lopsided smile of exasperation, setting the cup on the block. "He just cares a lot about your education. He wants you to be prepared."
Naruto crossed his arms. "Oh, is that what it is?" He frowned up at the ceiling as he considered this. "Seems more like he thinks I know nothing, expects me to fail at everything, and has no confidence in me whatsoever."
Hinata gave a little shrug. "Sounds like my father," she reasoned.
They stood in contemplative silence while this morbid observation hung in the air. Hinata started to apologize for the comment, but the kettle had already begun to squeal.
"You're not wrong," Naruto told her.
He hadn't made the connection before, but it certainly did seem as though Iruka-sensei was as heavy-handed as the Hyuuga Elder had once been with his daughter. But why? Hinata remained quiet while she selected one of his favorite green teas and dropped a pinch of dried leaves into a small bowl.
"Do you think that's why he's been so overbearing lately?" Naruto asked, arching one brow. "To make up for my lack of a father?"
The water hissed and burbled as Hinata poured it into the gaiwan. Steam rose and dissipated around her. "Perhaps not consciously," she replied, swirling the lid around in little circles to stir the leaves. "I think he simply wants you to succeed in whatever you put your mind to."
She had more experience than most, to believe the best about others and their intentions. And where it came to her own father, she exemplified the forgiveness of a saint. Once she capped the little pot and poured the tea into his cup, Naruto smiled softly at her and reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear.
"Let's not talk about it right now," he murmured, stroking her silky locks affectionately. "I'll drink this while you open your present."
Her nose and cheeks went pink at his touch. "Okay," she nodded, sliding the little cup toward him.
Delicate and precise in everything she did, Hinata carefully unwrapped the large box he had brought her while he sipped his drink. She set the white ribbon aside and folded it like it was a gift in itself, and when the wicker basket was revealed, she gave an awed coo.
"It's lovely!" she praised, running her fingertips along the rattan weave. She stopped at the clasp and Naruto put his hand over hers.
"It's a treasure box," he told her. "For storing your favorite things. I thought it would be appropriate for starting our new life together."
"It's perfect," she assured him, opening the lid and peering inside the empty box. She inhaled deeply and gave a happy sigh, remarking on its pleasant, earthy smell.
"You like it?" he asked.
"I love it," she confirmed, leaning against him in a sideways hug.
"Happy birthday, Hinata-chan," he breathed against her ear.
She turned and pressed her lips to his to convey her gratitude and her love. He returned the sentiment with the slow and sweet movement of his mouth against hers. They lingered there together, drawing closer with every breath, but before the kiss could become too sensual, she pulled away with a gasp.
"Oh! I know just what to put in it first!" she said with enthusiasm. She beckoned him to wait where he stood and scampered away in the direction of her bedroom, but she wasn't gone long. She returned quickly with a little book in her hands.
Cocking his head with interest, Naruto nodded to the book. "Oh! A diary?" he said with a wink. "Do you write about me in there?"
Hinata smirked at him, but she caressed the cover with tenderness. "I recently found Neji's sparring practice records," she explained softly.
The grin fell instantly from Naruto's face, and he straightened, feeling embarrassed for being irreverent. "Oh."
But she didn't take offense. Crossing to the wicker basket, Hinata placed the book inside with loving care. "This will keep my most special memories," she declared, reaching next for the folded white ribbon. "The most precious of my belongings, from my most precious people."
Notes:
If you read Retsuden, you might remember the little reference to Hinata's box of memories. I like to think it came from Naruto. :)
I would like to update this story a little more frequently, and I have a lot written in my drafts already. It usually takes me forever to edit and be satisfied enough with each chapter to post, but hopefully I'll have more time in the coming weeks!

Chapter Text
-January-
Blinding flashes of light and color preceded the thunderous booms of fireworks across the dark skies over Konoha. It was an electrifying spectacle of celebration that had drawn every citizen out into the frosty air to watch. Huddled in wool coats and even some traditional garb, the onlookers gasped and cheered. Hinata stood grinning at Naruto's side with her arm looped through his while they enjoyed the dazzling display. The new year came with greater pomp and promise than Naruto had ever known, and strangely, it all started with his future father-in-law.
On the morning of New Years' Eve, Naruto made good on his promise to meet with Hinata's father at his estate. In spite of his misgivings about facing the formidable clan leader one-on-one, he arrived at the grounds with a smile on his face. The frigid weather did nothing to prevent his palms from sweating, but otherwise he was able to conceal his nerves well enough.
A servant promptly conveyed him to the door of the chashitsu, and Naruto entered the sparse room to find it even more empty than he thought: Hiashi himself was waiting alone in solemn silence for his guest to arrive, and not another soul was in sight.
Since it had been snowing, the garden doors were closed, and the daylight was weak, but it was enough to to illuminate the room without need for a candle. While it wasn't exactly inviting, it was just suitable for visitors. Naruto greeted the man formally and settled himself on the tatami mat, and without a word, Hiashi began to clean his bamboo utensils. Apparently the Hyuuga elder had mastered the tea ceremony himself.
While Naruto wasn't fully versed in the art of tea, he was at least aware that this experience was meant to foster connection. He made the conscious effort to let down his guard and to be vulnerable in this sacred space with the father of his future wife. To avoid fidgeting, it helped him to focus on the Hyuuga's hands, which were employing each tool with the precision and grace of a well-practiced artisan. His fingers were not weathered like a rugged warrior's, nor were they pristine and unblemished like the Daimyo's. Hiashi's hands were clearly strong with the skill of the Gentle Fist, yet tender enough to cradle the heads of his daughters.
Naruto released a heavy sigh with the intention of releasing the residual discomfort he felt in anticipation of this moment. It briefly drew the inquisitive white eye of his host, but Hinata's father said nothing. Refocusing on his hands, Naruto watched while the clan leader expertly worked the ladle and the whisk. It was somehow soothing to hear the soft scraping of the bamboo prongs, to smell the grassy aroma of hot frothing matcha.
Perhaps the snow clouds had parted, or perhaps it was his imagination. Whatever it was, all at once, the light through the screens seemed to brighten, lifting the mood of the room to a warmer and more peaceful place. Then Hiashi very purposefully passed the cup to him. Somehow it felt as though they had transcended Konoha - perhaps even time itself - and for the moment, they were equals in this new space. Now they could both speak freely.
Naruto supposed that was the true power of the tea experience.
Blinking into the green beverage, Naruto bowed his head with thanks before lifting it in both his hands. The heat warmed his fingers instantly. He gave an appreciative sniff, the nutty scent filled his nose, and his mouth watered with the desire to taste it.
Suddenly, the intrusive thought that it was rather metaphorical of his Hinata crossed his mind, and he felt the heat rise from his hands straight to his cheeks. Attempting to redirect his thoughts, he took a generous sip of the matcha and licked his lips to savor the flavor. It was absolutely delicious.
Apparently Hinata had inherited her skill of making things delicious.
His fianceé imposed on his thoughts again, and he recalled that delicious kiss they shared in her kitchen on her birthday. Her eyes shone like the moon, her lips were smooth as peony petals, and she had the lingering, fresh fragrance of genmaicha in her hair. She was like an untouched garden of delights for all the senses. It made his hair stand on end to hear the sweet way she moaned into his mouth. How badly he wanted to...
What was wrong with him!? Why now? Now was definitely not the time.
"You must promise me one thing."
Naruto tried not to flinch, but it was as if Hinata's father could read his dirty thoughts like one of Kakashi-sensei's vulgar books. "Yes, Sir?"
Hiashi raised the full force of his terrifying eyes to him. Normally those eyes were hard to read, but rather than judgment, Naruto detected sadness in their opal depths.
"Promise me you will love her better than I did."
Naruto swallowed, realizing the man was neither full of judgment or sadness. His eyes held the pangs of regret.
Perhaps the Hyuuga leader had brought it on himself after all, but Naruto recognized this was a watershed moment. If he readily agreed, how would that show his future father-in-law any respect? If he didn't, how would that assure him that his daughter would be cherished? It was vital to answer carefully, truthfully.
"I promise to love her more than anyone ever has," he vowed. "And far more than I love anyone else, myself included."
The Hyuuga Elder gazed into his cup as if he could see the future there to verify it for himself. "It's the least she deserves. All of us are far more selfish than we think," he said with a frown. "I would know."
Naruto could only nod quietly, unsure if he should appear chastened by this as Hiashi rumbled with a sigh and continued to speak.
"But her heart is already yours." He made direct eye contact to add, "I only advise you not break it."
It was passive, but it was clearly a threat. Naruto cleared his throat. "Just as my heart belongs to her," he verified, keeping his eyes lowered respectfully. "And that is more than I could ever deserve."
Hiashi acknowledged this statement with a soft grunt.
They shared a comfortable silence, each sipping their tea. After the air was clear, Naruto chose to speak into the calm.
"Sir, I hope you know I want to marry Hinata for her alone, not her clan," Naruto insisted. "For me, this relationship was never a strategy to play politics or secure bloodlines."
Hiashi looked dubious at this. "You would be the first," he said dryly.
Naruto's face hardened, but he plowed on. "I have no desire for power or prestige."
"And yet, you have it," Hiashi pointed out with a slight smile. "You are the village hero, and on your way to become Hokage, are you not?"
Naruto tried not to squirm, but he felt cornered. He expected this topic would come up, and either answer could prove good reason for the Hyuuga Elder to oppose the marriage. "I am considering it."
Hinata's father pondered this neutral reply briefly, then began to prepare another bowl of tea. "Well, whatever your decision, you would do well not to graft yourself into this family lightly," he warned. "Our clan has endured endless threats for years, from those who seek the secrets of our kekkei genkai."
Naruto sensed a trap, but it wasn't untrue. "I know. I remember Hinata was kidnapped."
A shadow passed over the older man's face. The consequences of Hiashi's choices surrounding that fateful time were more far-reaching than he ever anticipated. It cost him his own brother and hardened hearts against him to this day, including his own daughter's. "As I said," he reiterated. "It would be unwise not to consider the ramifications."
"Hyuuga-sama-"
Hiashi clicked his tongue with distaste at the formality.
Naruto's brow creased with confusion, but he amended his address. "Sir, respectfully, I think you already know I'm well acquainted with a life of constant danger."
"Mmm," the clan leader gave a throaty hum as if this reinforced his argument. "Indeed."
"Persistent peril and threat won't scare me away from marrying and protecting your daughter," Naruto said plainly.
"I believe you," the Hyuuga concurred, raising a placating hand. "But you should know it is another thing entirely where it involves your offspring." Naruto felt himself stiffen when Hiashi pointedly clarified, "Your children will be high profile targets, regardless of your station."
To lash out right away in self defense would accomplish nothing between them. Tracing his thumb around the rim of his cup thoughtfully, Naruto took time to weigh this valid point. It clearly came from a place of apprehension and concern. Who wouldn't fear for the future family of a world-renowned ninja, even if they weren't already affiliated with a marked clan like the Hyuuga?
"Might I make a request of you, Sir?"
Evidently pleased by his boldness, Hiashi have a single nod of his graying head.
"Would you teach me?"
The Hyuuga stared at him uncomprehendingly, so Naruto took the liberty of elaborating.
"You saved your daughter's life, and you survived it. You know the demands and costs of protecting your children, your clan. You have valuable experience it took you a lifetime to learn. You could pass on that wisdom, for the sake of your grandchildren, if you were willing to share it."
The older man's brows pinched, but he didn't seem convinced. "You are a stronger ninja than I," he said dismissively. "I would have nothing to offer you. You know this."
"I don't necessarily mean just fighting," Naruto countered. "And I never had my father in my life to show me all the ways to protect his family because he died doing so. But you can teach me." His earnest blue eyes sought to sway him. "You could be my sensei."
Hiashi's pale eyes doubled in size.
Naruto shrugged one shoulder. "Contrary to what you say, I believe you have much to offer. I won't insist you accept me, but you shouldn't let your past sins hold you back."
A muscle twitched in the Hyuuga Elder's face. Too bold, perhaps, but Naruto was used to saying risky things to dangerous people.
"Your relationship with her doesn't have to be over, ya know. Hinata still needs your love, and I know she would value your support moving forward." He made the mistake of trying to make eye contact, then hastily dropped his eyes again. "As would I."
"Hm." Hiashi took a long sip from his cup. "You surprise me, Uzumaki," he admitted. "Always in good ways."
Naruto sniffed a laugh. "You wouldn't be the first to say that, ya know."
The Hyuuga leader scratched his chin, seeming to come to a decision. "I leave her in your care," he said gently, "And I accept you as my student. Is there anything more we should discuss while we are here?"
Naruto's grin softened into something more serene before he made his next request. "Well, Hyuuga-sensei, I was hoping you could tell me more about Hinata's mother."
Now the man's smile truly reached his eyes.
She had spent the whole of the morning and afternoon scrubbing the house from top to bottom. It was a long held tradition to begin the new year with a spotless home, symbolic of a clean slate for a brand new start. This was an annual rite regularly honored by the Hyuuga family, and this year especially would bear lots of new and exciting changes for Hinata. She was more than ready to usher it in.
But in addition to her future big plans, Hinata had always yearned to see the fireworks display with Naruto. It felt like a long lost dream come true that tonight they would finally celebrate the new year in together's company.
It was even better that she had good news to share.
The sun had already set when he returned to pick her up that evening, dressed warmly for the wintry night. She fidgeted with his wool sleeve as she clung to his arm, walking side by side toward the village square. "My father told me he wants to host our Yuino ceremony," she told him with a shy smile.
"Oh, really?" Naruto tipped his head toward her with interest.
She nodded, pressing her lips together, but she couldn't contain her excitement. "Actually, he suggested we schedule it for next month!"
Naruto barked a delighted laugh. "What? That's great news, Hinata-chan!"
"You must have made a good impression on him at tea," she proposed with a nudge of his shoulder.
Naruto rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand. "Well, he didn't cut off any of my body parts, so I guess you could say it went well."
"I think 'well' would be an understatement!" Hinata teased. "He hasn't spoken to me seriously about the wedding preparations until today!"
Thrilled by this, he gave her an open mouthed grin. "Does this mean we can get married soon, then?"
Hinata shrugged. "You know he's very traditional. He wants us to evaluate the new calendar and decide on the date. I'm sure he hopes for us to choose the most auspicious day." Her smile never left her face, but she eyed him more curiously. "Naruto, what exactly did you say to him?"
Naruto shook his head. "I can't tell you that," he sucked his teeth. "I was sworn to secrecy, man-to-man, ya know."
She narrowed her eyes at him, but he balked at her expression.
"Nope! No, you don't get to do that with your womanly wiles," he wagged a finger in her face. "My lips are sealed."
One dark, shapely brow arched upward. "Sealed?" Her mouth twisted with mock disappointment, and she stared suggestively at his mouth. "That's... unfortunate."
It stopped him in his tracks. He stood in the middle of the walkway, a wicked expression crossing his face. "How so?"
The bridge of her nose was pink, and she couldn't quite blame it on the cold. "I think you know I enjoy it when your lips... aren't sealed."
Heavens, she was going to kill him. He lunged for a kiss, but she dodged him, skipping away fast as a rabbit.
Giggling like school children, they booked it across the cobblestone path in a game of chase that led them down a street of shops. Festive lanterns were lit and hung along the main road, but the doors were all closed and locked up for the night, and the alleyways were dark. They rounded the corner of one such spot, wrestling each other into the shadows.
"You don't get to make comments like that and just take off," he panted, snagging her by the waist and squeezing her close. She squealed and smacked at him playfully, knocking him off balance, but he kept his arms around her.
"You deserved it," she parried, breathless with laughter. "I thought we'd agreed not to keep secrets from each other."
"Okay, okay," he relented easily, "You're right; I'll tell you everything." He wound his arms around her shoulders and drew her closer to his face. "But I want that kiss first."
She leaned her weight against him, backing him against a brick wall. "But how do I know you will keep your word?"
Naruto brushed his nose against hers. "Mm. I guess you don't."
He surged forward again to capture her mouth with his, but she cocked her head to the side just in time to avoid it. She was getting too good at this.
"Hi-na-ta!" he complained, but she only batted her lashes at him, tracing his jaw with a finger. He licked his lips and sighed. "Alright, fine. I asked him about your mother."
Hinata went a little rigid in his arms. "My mother?"
Naruto nodded and released her shoulder to bring his hand up into her hair, smoothing wayward strands away from her face. "She sounded just like you."
Her lovely mouth pulled back into a tiny, self-conscious smile. "What made you ask about her?"
"Well, who wouldn't want to know about the woman who gave you life?" he murmured, still running his fingertips through her soft locks. "No wonder your father is the way he is. He adored her."
Momentarily bewildered, Hinata was unable to evade his next move, and Naruto's hands fastened around her jaw to seize her for a searing kiss. She wanted to know more, but she only resisted for a fraction of a second before melting into his embrace. Her face went instantly hot, especially where his hands were on her face and neck. A little noise of longing escaped her when they came back up for air, inciting Naruto to bite the flesh of her lower lip.
It startled her, excited her. She straightened when it caused a tingling to climb her spine and burst across her neck and shoulders. She shivered.
"You like that?" he whispered against the corner of her mouth, and she responded by returning the gesture.
Apparently he liked it, too. He hoisted her up into his arms for better access, and their teeth made contact when they redoubled their efforts. His tongue wandered out with tentative interest, and it surprised her to find she went weak-kneed at the sensation. Chest to chest, hearts pounding, and lungs heaving, they lost themselves in these gratifying new experiences.
Then Naruto reflexively hunched over her when they were struck by a supersonic blast. It felt like the aftershock from a paper bomb, but the sound was a little different. It diverted their attention from each other up to the winter sky, where fiery gold sparks rained down over Konoha in glittering tendrils. Clearly they had lost track of time. Hinata gave a delighted gasp, and Naruto set her back on her feet.
"Let's go!" he urged her, pulling her into a run for the square. They couldn't miss it - not again.
Hand in hand when they arrived at the spot, they inserted themselves among the crowd. Colorful explosions multiplied overhead, and they turned their faces up to watch the glory.
Hinata's attention was so riveted by the light show that she scarcely registered the way Naruto was watching her. Eventually, when she sensed his eyes resting on her face, she pouted up at him with concern.
"Are you not enjoying yourself?" she asked him.
He blinked up to the sky and smirked. "Oh, I am," he assured her, his gaze settling back down upon her face. "But the best of it isn't up there, ya know."
Her reaction to this flattery was too wide of a smile and too much burn in her face. She touched her cheek with embarrassment, but he took her wrist in his warm grasp and moved her hand away.
"Stop that," he tutted, kissing her brow. "I like it when you get blushy."
Heavens, he was going to kill her.
Notes:
I was hoping to post this chapter in time for Mother's Day, but sadly I didn't quite make it. Anyway, it seemed to me this conversation might be how Naruto arrived at a more comfortable place with his father-in-law, and also why he refers to him as 'sensei'. I love the idea of him learning more about Hinata from Hiashi's memories of her mother. Maybe I'll finish that conversation in a future bonus chapter.
Also, I had to give Hinata the joy of finally experiencing those fireworks with Naruto, perhaps in ways she never imagined. :)
Chapter 4: Bonus: A Conversation
Summary:
Bonus chapter: Hiashi gives Naruto the tragic story about Hinata's mother. This is a continuation of their conversation from Chapter 3.
Notes:
I had this in mind while writing Chapter 3, and decided to flesh it out more fully before I move on. It's a little scandalous, but I think it suits the story and characters.
Also, this is obviously not canon, but I tried my best to keep it as consistent with canon as possible. I hope you enjoy what I envision of Hinata's departed mother.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
While Hinata's father was slow to warm to some topics, it took very little coaxing for him to open up about his late wife.
"She was... exquisite. I had never known anyone so loving, so considerate of others." Hiashi recalled. His featureless eyes seemed lost in worshipful memory before he focused back on Naruto. "Until my Hinata, that is."
Naruto pressed his lips together. "I had a feeling they might be alike, but Hinata hasn't told me much."
"She was so young when her mother passed," the Hyuuga nodded. "Hinata likely doesn't remember much of her anymore. Time is a thief in more ways than one: it has a way of stealing what we can remember of those who leave us."
Clasping his hands together and settling in for the details, Naruto invited him to continue. "Please, Hyuuga-sensei, share what you do remember."
Hiashi pressed his knuckles to his mouth and gathered his thoughts. "She loved the rain. Her favorite flower was the camellia. She adored our daughters, and while she didn't really sing, I always found her humming a tune for them. She was gentle, soft-spoken, and eager to please me. I never deserved her."
Naruto gave a dreamy sigh at the romantic prelude. Hiashi blinked at him with a touch of embarrassment, but moved on.
"Our people called her 'The Black-eyed Broad'. It was a recessive trait among our clan. She had not inherited the white eyes, and early in her life she was shunned for it. I did not appreciate her dark eyes at the time either, but after I came to love her, I found them so alluring."
"After you came to love her?" Naruto repeated, confusion in his voice.
Hiashi shrugged. "Ours was an arranged marriage, of sorts."
"Of sorts?" Naruto said suspiciously. At Hiashi's quelling glare, he stopped asking questions.
"My brother and I did not take wives in our youth," Hiashi started pointedly. "We were both arrogant and too stubborn for courtship. But rather than outgrow them, these character flaws only worsened with age. Hizashi became increasingly hot-headed. Brash."
Naruto's mouth stretched back in an ironic grin that Hiashi ignored.
"I was devoted to leadership, and he had been delegated to the Branch Family. He had a propensity for stirring up conflict and resentment. As time went on, our father decided we both needed to marry and settle down, to do our part to carry on the bloodline."
The blond rolled his eyes.
"We both protested the idea for different reasons, but Hizashi did so most fiercely. To say my father was displeased with him when he arranged the matches would be an understatement. He thought he would punish Hizashi by tying him to such an 'undesirable' woman." Hiashi raised his chin slightly. "It did not go the way he expected."
Naruto quirked a brow, sensing a scandal.
"Both marriages were set to take place at the same time, the same day. To retaliate against my father, we swapped brides on the wedding day. It was Hizashi's idea, and I didn't care enough to fight it."
Naruto's eyes practically bulged from his head. "What?!"
Hiashi's mouth pulled back in a rueful smile. "It was easy to accomplish, being identical twins. Our brides had no idea, since they spent so little time in our company to begin with, and by the time my father figured it out, it was already too late. The Black-eyed Broad was mine."
Naruto's jaw came unhinged.
"My father was livid, but he was also mortified, and he didn't dare speak of it again, probably for fear that word would get out about the potential 'contamination' of the main branch." Hiashi smirked with the memory. "But my brother was thrilled. He had his revenge, as well as a wife with a strong pedigree. It was the one rebellious act that worked in both our favors, I suppose."
Naruto couldn't help the shocked laugh that escaped his mouth, and then the Hyuuga's smile turned sad.
"I didn't love her when we were wed, and I resolved to just divorce her quietly, but it didn't take her long to possess my heart. She was determined to make the best of the situation, especially since she felt fortune had smiled on her, to be wed into the more prestigious family."
He sniffed as if the idea were absurd. "We were only married for eight years before she died." Hiashi closed his eyes to add, "But her passing destroyed me as if we had been together much longer."
"I'm so sorry," Naruto offered. "That must have been terrible."
Hiashi hung his head. "Hizashi used to say my heart had died with her."
"How did she die?" Naruto asked solemnly.
The Hyuuga sighed heavily. "She had congenital heart disease. We did not discover it until after she was pregnant with Hanabi."
Naruto's blond brows reached his hairline.
"She died just three months after she was born. Hinata was only five years old."
A mournful pause filled the space while he debated the merits of sharing the next detail of the story.
"Her parents were cousins, you understand. It was not as bad as it could have been, but the damage from the previous generations was already done."
Naruto's countenance took on unmistakable disgust.
"I know," Hiashi scowled, spreading his hands. "It's just how things were done back then, to preserve the kekkei genkai. The clan leaders didn't know until it was too late that such practices caused birth defects."
Now Naruto looked alarmed. "So, your girls-?"
Hiashi expected this, and he raised his hand to still him. "All is well with them, as far as we can tell."
He looked relieved to hear it, but Hiashi had more to reveal.
"However, you should know that because of it, we struggled to conceive. Hizashi and his wife were pregnant with Neji right away, but it took us nearly three years." Hiashi grimaced. "She miscarried several times. We thought we were past it all when Hinata was finally born, but that was not the case."
After a breath of pensive silence, Naruto frowned up at his future father-in-law. "Does Hinata know?"
"Both of my daughters are aware, and they know it may impact their own fertility."
Squeezing the fist in his lap, Naruto's face hardened. "The Hyuuga need to change their ways, Sensei. I understand why the clan has done some of these things, but that doesn't make any of it right."
To his surprise, Hiashi readily sided with him. "You are correct," he replied. "And that is partly why I refuse to let my daughters marry within the clan."
Pursing his lips, Naruto gestured to himself. "So, you don't see an outsider as a threat to the bloodline?"
"On the contrary," the older man answered. "More than ever, I think we need new blood to save it."
Naruto flexed his jaw as he mulled this over, but Hiashi spoke again. "But more importantly, Uzumaki, you love my daughter. And to me, that takes precedence over everything else."
Naruto gave the man a respectful nod, glad to know they were in agreement on that matter.
"Hyuuga-sensei, if you don't mind my asking: What was her mother's name?"
Hiashi's gaze wandered again, enraptured by the fleeting memories of the woman who took his heart with her to the grave. "She was known by many different names," he answered. "But I preferred to call her Beloved."
Notes:
Although it was prevalent in the history of many different cultures, real and fiction alike, I should make it clear that I do not condone inbreeding or incest in any form. And regardless of how the Hyuuga actually managed to keep their dojutsu going strong, I would like to think they at least learned better than to impose endogamy by the time Hiashi reached marrying age. The other things they still practiced were bad enough.
If you're wondering about Neji's mother, I'm right there wondering with you. I'm undecided on what happened to her yet. Maybe we will find out later. ;)
I hope you enjoyed my take on this. I'm hoping to update this weekly moving forward, but can't make any promises. All I can say is that the drafts are all in the works.
Thanks for sticking with me!

Chapter Text
-February-
Yellow daffodils stood tall and defiant in the light dusting of snow along the manicured path. For those who detested the winter months, it was a good omen for mid-February. A patch of purple crocus peeked out just beneath the daffodils, bravely joining them as fearless heralds of the next season to come. Iruka's gaze lingered on the flowers as he walked past, thinking it such a picture of the couple they were on their way to celebrate.
"Looks like spring will be early this year," Kakashi remarked from where he walked beside Naruto, balancing a pile of presents in his hands. He donned a black haori jacket instead of of the Hokage cloak today, appearing far too relaxed.
"Fingers crossed," Naruto agreed, also dressed in a black outfit that he borrowed from the Rokudaime for the occasion.
Hiashi Hyuuga had insisted on hosting the Yuino ceremony at his estate instead of the more casual and neutral territory of a restaurant or dining hall rental. Iruka strongly suspected the man's motivations behind this generous offer were not entirely benevolent in nature, but Naruto seemed cheered by his future father-in-law's eagerness to promote the festivities. Iruka supposed it made sense - if the Hyuuga were agreeable to supporting this marriage, they all might as well take it as a good sign.
Additionally, Iruka was surprised by Naruto's enthusiasm for the Yuino ceremony in general. The blond had commissioned his and Kakashi's help procuring the proper gifts - some involving so much research that it might have been impossible without the Rokudaime's connections. Sourcing a pristine clamshell from the Land of Whirlpools was more than just a symbolic wish for longevity in their lives and marriage: it was a personal declaration of devotion. It was a tradition less popular among the youth these days, but as Naruto had insisted, everything had to be 'perfect'. And for a family as steeped in tradition as the Hyuuga, it certainly made sense.
Hinata looked extravagant in a well-tailored furisode, strikingly different in color and style from her younger sister. Never one to be outshone, Hanabi was also a treasure to behold in soft yellows, creams, and golds, but the bride had selected a complimentary palette of lavender, eggplant, white, and silver. Her hair was tied up in a traditional style, adorned with flowers and other ornaments Naruto had never seen before. She entered the room shyly, unaccustomed to the attention and position of honor, but the sight of her rendered her betrothed speechless.
Iruka had to elbow Naruto hard in the ribs to break the stare that was fast becoming inappropriate. The blond grunted at the blow and glared briefly at his old teacher before offering the future bride his praises.
"Please forgive me, Hinata-chan," he insisted with a smirk and flash of white teeth. "You are so lovely, you took my breath away."
Hanabi barely contained a squeal of delight at the brazen compliment. Kakashi barely contained a chuckle, earning him a judgmental glance from Iruka. Hinata's face went as pink as the plum blossoms in the tokonoma alcove, but she was glowing with happiness.
Hiashi cleared his throat. "We are honored by your coming, and we have gifts to offer to you." He gestured to a table laid out with ornately wrapped boxes, tied with ribbons of red and gold. Hanabi jumped right up, selecting two of the packages and presenting them to Naruto with a giddy grin.
"Shouldn't ladies go first?" he asked, hesitantly accepting the wrapped boxes with a glance to his bride.
"You're our guest," Hiashi gestured for him to proceed. "Please."
Careful to show appreciation for the delicate wrapping, Naruto gently removed the ribbons and took pains not to tear the paper. Inside the box was a set of handcrafted rice bowls. "Made in the Artisan's village," Hanabi elaborated while he admired the texture of the pottery and the color of the glaze. "Symbolic of our hope for your love to multiply."
"They are exquisite," Iruka remarked, "An excellent choice for the young couple."
"I don't think I've ever owned anything so nice," Naruto concurred, passing a bowl to Kakashi for his inspection.
"Maa," the Hokage added with a nod to the Lord of the house. "You must give me the name of the craftsman."
Hiashi gave a hum of assent, clearly pleased to have his family's refined tastes recognized by their village leader.
Naruto took up the second box with eagerness, causing Hanabi to squirm with anticipation. He gave her a bemused smile when he unveiled a container of premium bonito flakes, and the men in the room all exchanged knowing smiles.
"Katsuobushi from the Hidden Mist," Hanabi supplied with a twinkle in her eye. "For virility."
An awkward pause stretched longer than was comfortable before Naruto could reply. "Yum," he answered, chewing his lip and risking eye-contact with his fianceé, who blushed furiously. "Thanks."
Kakashi planted his hand firmly on Naruto's head. "I'll explain it to him later," he assured the assembly, and everyone gave in to snuffles of suppressed laughter. Any remaining tension in the room instantly dissipated, and it felt to all present in the room that they were united for the sake of the special couple. Hiashi must have sensed this because he seized the moment to transition to their next order of business.
"Please do, Lord Hokage," Hiashi insisted heartily as he rose to his feet. "I want grandchildren! But first..." Crossing to the table, he plucked up a white envelope and gave his eldest daughter a soft smile. "Well, first we have a wedding to plan."
Turning to face Naruto, Hiashi knelt and laid the envelope at the blond's knee. Naruto sobered at the formal gesture, knowing the deceptively small package contained a large sum of money, but when the Hyuuga elder formally bowed to him, his mouth fell open with shock.
"Uzumaki Naruto, I acknowledge you today as my son-in-law."
Naruto's heart leapt inside him so hard he gave an outward jolt. A soft whimper from his bride-to-be allowed him a brief distraction, and he saw that she was moved to tears. Hanabi rolled out a parchment and calligraphy brush, which her father took up and signed. He revealed it was a clan certification, naming Naruto his descendent by marriage.
Propriety surely dictated some kind of response, but all he could do was gawk at Hinata's father.
"Naruto!" Iruka hissed as discreetly as he could.
Naruto fumbled over a verbal response, then hastily dropped into a deep bow, low enough for his nose to hover just above the floor. "You honor me, Hyuuga-sensei."
Iruka and Kakashi shared a glance before they lowered their gazes to the floor respectfully, allowing time and space for the moment to linger. Naruto, who had never received the gift of a father figure to claim him, was practically vibrating at the declaration.
"Please raise your head," Hiashi finally instructed him. "I hope you will accept my gift."
Naruto bolted upright. "Oh! Oh yes," he stammered, taking the envelope in both hands. "Thank you, Sir."
"For saké for the wedding," Hiashi told him severely, then winked. "And only the very best quality."
Naruto swallowed, tucking the generous gift into his sleeve for safe keeping. "Certainly, Sir."
Hinata took this close on the subject as her cue to stand. She shuffled to the table to collect the final two presents - the largest of the five - and placed them before her future husband.
"I hope you will be pleased, Naruto-kun," she whispered bashfully.
Naruto's breath left him as he looked on her. Iruka thought he saw his hand tremble just before he proceeded to untie the ribbon. With a rustle of tissue paper, Naruto extracted a traditional style groom's skirt from the shallow little box, unfolding it to fully reveal the grey silk. Iruka gave a small gasp, and Kakashi gave a throaty hum, both to demonstrate how impressed they were by the craftsmanship.
"I had them both made here in the Hidden Leaf for you," Hinata explained softly, sliding the other box closer to his reach. "They symbolize fidelity."
Brows knitting together, Naruto laid the hakama aside and reached for the final box. Silence descended on them all while he worked to open the last gift. Surely they had saved the greatest for the end, and it was hard to imagine anything greater.
The black silk of the montsuki was as dark and rich as ink. Embroidered in a contrasting, bold white was the Uzumaki crest, one on each breast and one on the back. Naruto traced the intricate needlework with a reverent fingertip. "For me to wear," he murmured, awestruck. "On our wedding day."
Hinata was dropping tears freely. "You must let me know if it requires alterations," she instructed, swiping at her cheeks.
"You will look quite refined in that," Iruka rasped, struggling to restrain his emotion.
"This means so much to me," Naruto assured his future wife, his words trembling on the edge of tears as well. "I can't ever thank you enough."
Kakashi grunted his agreement. "Thank goodness it isn't orange," he muttered.
The brief moment of comic relief helped them all to ground themselves, and Naruto offered his thanks once more to the Hyuuga family.
Iruka unfolded himself gracefully from where he was seated, and sliding open the paper screen door, revealed a pile of packages that were neatly arranged there. He took up a cube-shaped box and a smaller, flat one. They were both wrapped expertly in an iridescent fabric and satin ribbons. He laid them at the young bride's knee.
"They're too pretty to open!" Hinata commented. When she lifted the square lid of the first box, she simply sat admiring the item inside.
"Lady Hinata, you keep us in suspense!" Kakashi chuckled, waving a hand at her casually. "Show us what's inside!"
What emerged was the most marvelous, gleaming specimen of a clamshell that any of them had ever seen. Not a chip or crack marred the edges or pearly surfaces.
"To represent our wish for your long life," Iruka said with a solemn dip of his head.
"Surely it's not from anywhere near here," Hanabi inquired, and Iruka tried to hide his proud smile.
"My Lady is most observant," he bobbed his head, still keeping his eyes downcast. "It is from the Hidden Eddy Village in the Land of Whirlpools, the birthplace of Naruto's honored mother."
Hinata traced the scalloped edge of the shell. "Oh, it is precious," she declared, lifting her eyes to her future husband. "I will always treasure it."
Naruto could not stop smiling.
When Hinata eased open a delicate wrapping of kelp, Hiashi recognized it right away.
"Ah, Konbu!" he said with approval, and Iruka bit his bottom lip to keep from laughing.
"For good health and for children, eventually," Iruka said quickly. "We hope you will enjoy the very best of its kind from Degarashi Port, in the Land of Tea."
Hinata offered her thanks for these blessings from the sea, and then it was Kakashi's turn to present two gifts to the bride. From an elaborately decorative paper bag she drew a hand spun strand of 3 braided cords, embellished with knots and glass beads. Hinata fit the textured cord around her wrist like a bracelet.
"The hemp was made in the Hidden Cloud," Kakashi explained, folding his arms into his sleeves. "We wish for you both to grow old together as you weave your story."
"Lord Hokage," Hinata bowed gracefully. "You are most kind."
"Maa, drop the Lord," Kakashi tutted as he passed her the next package. "I believe you might have been expecting this one."
They all had. Perhaps the most traditional but also most central gift to the ceremony was the dried and preserved cuttlefish, a timeless symbol from centuries of tradition and meaning.
Kakashi's eyes crinkled with a hidden smile when she lifted it for all to see. "This surume was acquired at Todoroki Shrine on Ouza Island. May you be blessed with a long marriage."
While Hiashi's gaze rested on the gift in his daughter's hands, Iruka could sense his memories were rioting under the surface of his composed features, and a twist of his mouth betrayed his wistfulness.
Hinata offered her heartfelt gratitude, then Naruto rose to gather the two remaining gifts and place them before his intended. She selected the longest box first, withdrawing a corked glass bottle. Hinata and her Father both gave an impressed hum as she handed the bottle to him for a closer look.
"This plum wine hails from the Land of Rivers," Hiashi murmured as he turned the container in his hands. "A very fine wine indeed."
"It appears Naruto has excellent connections," Hanabi commented brightly with a significant glance to the two men behind him.
"I just wanted the best, ya know, to celebrate my bride," Naruto murmured shyly, and Hinata's gaze roved over him sweetly.
The next gift was a pure white fan. Hinata spread it open elegantly with one hand and gave it a flutter. She could not suppress a giggle as she passed it to her sister, who exclaimed, "Suehiro!"
Naruto nodded, pleased by her reaction. "Temari helped with that one. Made in the Land of Wind, for a happy future."
While Hanabi tested out the fan, Hinata discovered a small card attached to the tassel that read, 'Best wishes for your marriage.' It was signed by none other than the Kazekage himself.
"You spoil me," Hinata accused Naruto lightly.
"Actually, I have one more gift for you, Hinata-chan," Naruto announced with a toothy smile. Reaching into the breast of his robe, he presented one last box, so small he could nearly conceal it in his palm.
Hinata blinked at him with surprise, but he continued.
"This one is less traditional, or rather, more common in the west," he explained. Then dropping into a low bow, he passed her the surprise gift with both hands as Iruka and Kakashi followed suit, lowering their faces.
All in the room seemed to hold their breath collectively as Hinata accepted it with her fingers. This miniature box was wrapped in velvet rather than paper. "Naruto-kun," she gasped, stroking it with her finger.
Hanabi was writhing where she sat, flapping the little white fan as if she may pass out from excitement. Hiashi's eyes went wide as saucers when the lid cracked open to reveal a glittering diamond, nestled in the folds of plush grey velvet.
"Oh! Oh, this is too much," Hinata despaired immediately, feeling dazzled by the bright solitaire. "I-I cannot accept this."
"Please don't say that," Naruto spoke to the ground, still kneeling before her. "Please."
Hinata swallowed. "But Naruto! I can't imagine the cost."
"Then don't," he insisted. "Imagine instead that it represents my commitment to you."
She shuddered as she looked back down and admired the ring. The stone was cut into a perfect circle, with countless facets that sparkled with light. It was set on a two-tone, twisting band of yellow and white gold. She could only guess at where he had managed to procure such a valuable thing. "It is too lovely," she whimpered.
It was as if he could sense her resistance to it was assigned to her self worth. His head snapped up. "You are lovely," Naruto countered gently. "The ring is just a symbol."
It definitely was symbolic. Silver and gold entwined like fire and ice, like sun and moon. The white hot diamond at its center, like the love and passion they shared. A perfect metaphor.
Naruto inched forward on his knees to close the distance between them. "Will you accept it?" He asked, close enough for her to feel his breath on her face.
"I don't need a ring to marry you," she reminded him softly. "I don't need anything."
"I know that," he whispered. "Still, I want you to have it."
"Why?"
His hand closed around hers, and she could feel his callouses brush against her knuckles. It was a reminder of all the hardships they endured, but his flesh was strong and warm, just like his heart, in spite of it all. He squeezed her hand gently. "Because to me, you are the diamond of infinite worth." His lip began to tremble, but he plodded on hoarsely. "And I want you to always know it."
Tears prickled at the corners of her eyes yet again, and she nodded her head.
Naruto took the box from her grasp and plucked the ring out from its encasement. "Yes?"
"Yes," she said shakily. He took her left hand in his bandaged one, sliding the ring onto the finger beside her pinky. Then, dropping his forehead to hers with apparent relief, he suggested, "Think of it only as a reminder of my love for you. Real. Enduring. Eternal."
"I will," she promised, cupping his jaw. His own hand fastened behind her neck and, heedless of their company, he leaned in to kiss a tear from her cheek, and then her mouth. When he pulled back, the space between them was as charged as electricity, and he was helplessly drawn in for a second, deeper kiss.
"Maa, did you forget we were here?" Kakashi drawled. His tone was laced with disapproval, but Iruka knew better.
Naruto grimaced, lips still pressed against his fianceé's. "I might have," he quipped, but he complied with the implied demand for restraint. He eased back onto his ankles once more, and Hinata's now adorned hand was nestled firmly in his. Iruka didn't think he would let go the rest of the night.
If Hiashi found such public display of devotion tasteless, he did not show it. His stoic features somehow radiated happiness as he swept an arm out to the assembly. "I believe there is one more matter to determine today," he told them all. As if rehearsed, Hanabi set aside the fan she was making good use of and produced a rokuyo calendar at the center of the room in the view of everyone.
"What fortune that the luckiest day of the year comes in May," he informed the group, pointing a finger to the grid of dates. "Spring will be early this year, so an outdoor wedding should be quite pleasant, and would accommodate the sizable guest list more comfortably than an indoor venue."
"That's great news, but it puts the wedding less than 3 months out," Iruka observed, pressing his knuckles to his mouth. "Can all the preparations really be made so quickly?"
"Yes. In fact, I am already in contact with a priest from the local shrine," Hiashi disclosed. "He assured me he can prioritize the taian for our favored couple."
Kakashi and Iruka exchanged surprised glances.
"Forgive me," Kakashi spoke up. "I may be misinformed, but I thought the plan was for them to wed before the Hokage Statue?"
"It is," Hinata clarified with a look to her fiancé. "But- well..."
Naruto took over. "We plan to have a private family ceremony at the shrine first."
A private ceremony. Likely Hyuuga only.
"I see," Iruka replied, if a little crestfallen.
Hanabi interjected smoothly. "Well, what do the couple think?"
They all turned expectantly to the lovers, who still sat knee to knee as if they could not tolerate any more physical distance.
Naruto scrutinized the list of numbers with a frown. "I feel like it's harder than it should be to choose a date. I am happy with the taian."
"As am I," Hinata agreed.
"Then it's settled," Hiashi declared with a clap of his hands. "The wedding will take place on the 8th of May."
Notes:
A longer chapter today to make up for the shorter one preciously. We are getting closer and closer to the wedding day! Here's hoping I can stay on schedule.
