Be My Mr. Darcy Even For A Moment

Summary:

Trucy needs an actor for a school play and Phoenix volunteers, having done so back in college. Phoenix thus rekindles his interest in theater while Edgeworth is taken in by his performance, wanting a smooth and romantic Phoenix Wright confess to him the same way he does to the love interest on stage. But it being real.

Chapter Text

“Pleeeeease, Uncle Miles! You’d be perfect!”

“For the last time, Trucy - no!”

Phoenix didn’t know what he walked into but he was in no mood for any back and forth arguing today.

“Whatever it is you two are quarreling over, can it wait? I’ve had a rough day at the Borscht Bowl Club. There are so many times I can attempt to play The Piano Man…”

“Sorry, daddy but I need Uncle Miles help.”

“And I made it very clear that I am no actor.”

“Okay, okay, time out.” Phoenix held his hands up to get the two to stop talking. “Explain to me what’s going on.”

“Well, you see, the school festival is coming up next week and we decided to do a play based on Pride and Prejudice.” Trucy began explaining.

“Going all Victorin style, eh?” Phoenix remarked. “I take the costumes are fancy.”

“Oh yes, we have a very good costume designer – ah, but that’s besides the point!” Trucy tried to go back on track. “Anyway, the lead actor just got into a car accident – he’s okay, thankfully, but he has to stay in the hospital for a while. Even if he gets released early, he’ll be in crutches and bandages so it would be impossible for him to perform.”

“What about an understudy?” Phoenix asked.

“He caught the flu…” She sighed. “He’s not supposed to leave the house for over a week so… yeah.”

“I see, but what does that have to do with Edgeworth?”

“The lead role is Mr. Darcy – handsome, upstanding, blunt – it just fits Edgeworth perfectly!”

“I.am.not.an.actor!” Edgeworth replied bluntly, almost proving Trucy’s point.

“Aren’t the actors’ high schoolers?” Phoenix wondered out loud.

“Some, but a lot of teachers are also acting since we are all getting involved with the school festival. Elizebeth Bennet is played by my English teacher; she’s reeeeeally pretty.”

She eyed at Edgeworth as she said it as if hoping it would peak Edgeworth’s interest.

“Mmhm.” Was his only response, his annoyed expression not changing.

“Oh come on, who else can I ask on such in short notice!?”

“I mean, you need someone who can act and remember lines quickly, yes?” Phoenix began to muse, stroking his chin. “Perhaps I can help.”

Trucy and Edgeworth did a double take at his suggestion. Trucy looked horrified as Edgeworth let out a brief snarky laugh.

“What?” Phoenix frowned.

“Um, daddy, I’m not sure you would make a convincing Mr. Darcy…”

“Why not?”

“Look, I know as a father you want to help Trucy.” Edgeworth shook his head. “But look at yourself – stubbled chin, sweatpants and a ratty hoodie, not to mention your unkempt hair. I also do not believe you ever acted in your life.”

“That’s where you are wrong.” Phoenix smirked.

“Our elementary school play of Hansel and Gretel doesn’t count.”

“No, not that one!” Phoenix snapped. As far as he remembered he was a wolf, even though there wasn’t one in the original fairy tale. “I was studying Theater back in college before the whole lawyer thing took my full interest. I was not half bad.”

“Wait, you did Theater?” Trucy looked more interested now. “You never told me that.”

“I guess I haven’t thought much about that part of my past.” Even though he said it, he had a fond look in his eyes. “It’d be nice to return to acting again. I rather missed it.”

‘I hate to be the bearer of bad news,” Edgeworth interrupted. “But even if you CAN act, would the way you look now convince anyone you are a wealthy aristocrat?”

“That’s where the costuming comes in.” Phoenix reminded. “And if you are going to complain about my stubble, I can always shave.”

“Even so, I still question your acting skills with how poor your bluffing abilities are…”

“Hey now, I have you know I often got the lead roles when I auditioned.”

(‘Perhaps as the court jester.’) Edgeworth thought.

“Why so critical?”

“I just don’t want Trucy to be teased by others if you end up making a fool of yourself.”

“Yikes, that could be a possibility!” Trucy realized in horror.

Phoenix once again raised his hands, trying to assure them both.

“Look, all I ask if for an audition. If I truly suck, I’ll back off.”

“Fine…” Trucy sighed. “We are desperate for anyone to step up at this point.”

“Hey, I just might surprise you.”

Edgeworth didn’t think much of it, believing that Phoenix was indeed determined to make a fool out of himself. Perhaps he should ask around in the office of anyone he knows that could take the part instead, for the sake of Trucy’s reputation.

*

“Hey, Uncle Miles, what’s up?” Trucy spoke over the phone, Edgeworth having called her the next day.

‘Listen, I found someone who might want to take the lead in the play as I asked around and-”

“Oh that’s alright, we have a Mr. Darcy performing after all.”

“I see, I’m relieved to hear that. I hope your father wasn’t too disappointed that he didn’t end up getting the part.”

“Huh? Ah no, he IS the Mr. Darcy who’ll perform.”

Edgeworth’s jaw nearly dropped but tried to keep his composure over the phone.

“I-is that so? So he passed the audition then?”

“With flying colors! I couldn’t believe how amazing an actor daddy really is!”

Edgeworth wondered if Trucy was deluding herself or she didn’t know much about acting in general. There was no way Phoenix Wright with his constant slouching and unkempt look could be playing such a role of that of Mr. Darcy.

“So I was wondering if you’d like to come to my school festival? I will be performing myself.”

“In the play?”

“No, a stage show. We have different things going on in this festival. I was hoping maybe you’d like to join to support me and daddy.”

When she put it that way, he did want to be there for these two whenever he could. And he did have a day off when the school festival begins…

And perhaps he is a little curious to see Phoenix’s acting… even if he didn’t expect much.

“Yes, I think I will come.”

*

The school festival was a lot more crowded to his liking. Trucy was showing him around to food stands and café’s but he just wanted to be somewhere quiet. In every direction someone is shouting to try out their food or their themed café and it was beginning to give him a headache.

He did enjoy himself when he saw the stage event Trucy put on, when it was time for her to do her magic show. She was talented as always and got a standing ovation. Now if Phoenix could manage to give that kind of performance…

“The main event is about to start – come on!”

Trucy was all hyper, pulling Edgeworth by the hand to lead him to the play that took place in the gym. It was a lot roomier than he expected, nicely decorated to look like your standard stage play with red curtains and everything.

He took a seat next to Trucy as the crowd began to fill up every empty seat available. The play eventually began and the costumes and acting were rather well done. The lead Elizbeth Bennet was rather charming he had to admit, making him hope that Phoenix could meet her halfway in that department when he comes on.

Then the ballroom scene arrived, and Mr. Darcy was to be introduced. Edgeworth was confused that the man coming on stage was not Phoenix. The man was walking with good posture, wearing a black waistcoat with a wide cravat, a well-groomed hair (no spikes in sight) along with sideburns. He moved forward from his seat to get a closer look, thinking maybe he is Phoenix, but then Mr. Darcy began to talk. This wasn’t his voice; it was deep and smooth.

“I thought Wright was playing the role?” He whispered to Trucy.

“What? That IS daddy!” Trucy clarified.

Edgeworth wasn’t sure if he could believe what he heard right away.

“But his hair…”

“Wigs.”

“Oh. But his voice-”

“Acting. That’s what acting is.”

Edgeworth sat back on his chair and just stared at Mr. Darcy. It took awhile for him to accept it but he had to eventually come to admit that it had to Phoenix. If there is anything that didn’t change was Phoenix’s eyes, they were indeed his.

Why did he look so handsome!? Well, perhaps deep down he had always thought him to be handsome but this on a whole new level. And the voice… it was silken, something he would love to hear whispers from. Oh, and why doesn’t Phoenix dress like this more often!? It suits him so well!

When his brain wasn’t rambling, he found himself jealous of how Phoenix was getting closer to the woman playing Elizbeth. He knew it was acting but it still stung how he was paying attention to someone this way. Especially during the scene where they danced together at the ball. Then the confession came.

“In vain I have struggled. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

Edgeworth swallowed hard. He made these words feel genuine, even his voice cracked towards the end, his real voice coming out for a second. He no longer could see Elizebeth, he instead began to picture himself in her place.

*

The play ended with success. Trucy applauded loudly, looking over at Edgeworth.

“That was good, no?”

He just nodded, trying to match her applause though his mind was somewhere else. When the actors came for a meet and greet, Phoenix was not among them. Instead he came out from another door, wearing his now ordinary outfit.

“Hi, daddy, you were great!” Trucy rushed up to Phoenix to give him a hug.

“Thanks, Trucy.” Phoenix looked up at Edgeworth with a knowing grin. “Well?”

“Alright, I must confess I was wrong!” Edgeworth didn’t hide his annoyance. “You were amazing.”

“See, I told you I was good.”

“But why are you dressed back to your usual clothes?”

“Because I’m ready to go home. I did what I came to do.”

“Awww, but there were some students who really wanted to meet Mr. Darcy in person.” Trucy pouted.

“I feel like it would be for the best if they didn’t.” Phoenix shrugged. “Let’s not disappoint them with seeing the real thing.”

“You’re not a disappointment, daddy.” Trucy protested.

“Let’s go, kiddo.” Phoenix smiled a little, trying to move on from the conversation.

“I can give you both a ride.” Edgeworth suggested.

“Would you? Thanks, Edgeworth.”

“Yes, well, I did drive Trucy here so it would be common courtesy.”

True to his word, he drove them back to their place, both Trucy and Phoenix talking about the festival among other things. Edgeworth didn’t join in. All he could think of Phoenix’s raw love confession, playing it in his head over and over.

(‘You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”’)

*

“Why did you drag me to a place like this?”

“Obviously you need a wardrobe upgrade. You can’t keep wearing the same dirty hoodie everyday.”

“Sure, I get that.” Phoenix said as he looked around. “But why bring me to such an upscale clothing store?”

“What do you mean? I do all my clothes shopping here.”

“Exactly. There’s no way I can afford anything here.”

“You do no need to fret, I will pay for it.” Edgeworth assured.

“Uh, okay?” Phoenix looked around at the fancy clothes on display. “None really look like they are quite my style.”

“Nonsense, you just need to try something on – oh, this would look good on you!”

Edgeworth picked up an expensive looking suit and showed it to him.

“This… this looks similar to what you wear. Expect it’s blue…”

“Yes, I thought it would be your color.” Edgeworth tried not to gush as he held the suit up to Phoenix’s body. “Or would you rather pick a different color? Or maybe something fancier?”

“I’m good with simple clothing, thanks…”

“Perhaps this would look better.” Edgeworth suggested as he got another suit that looked like it was made of money.

“No, seriously, I can’t picture ever wearing something like that.” Phoenix explained, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Of course you could.” Edgeworth insisted. “What about the outfit you wore at the school festival?”

“That was me being in a play: acting. You wear all kinds of things on stage.” He gave Edgeworth a small smile. “I appreciate what you are trying to do but I prefer if you just continue to help with the grocery’s and getting essentials for me and Trucy like you’ve done before. We don’t need anything super pricey – especially clothes that I don’t think I’d ever wear if I actually owned them.”

“I see…” Edgeworth couldn’t deny he was disappointed but Phoenix had a point.

And it was true that Phoenix wasn’t someone who’d dressed stylishly (expect maybe during his days as a lawyer which Edgeworth really missed). And it was not he was actively trying to change Phoenix, he just wanted to see him dressed up all handsome the same way at the play that made his heart flutter. He’s met many handsome smooth talkers in his life but there is something special about someone he knows (loves), usually being a simple fool as Franziska says, acting all sophisticated and talking in a smooth silky voice asking if Edgeworth would be the one to get invited out. Maybe for a fancy event. Just the two of them. Maybe dancing could be involved…?

“You okay?” Phoenix looked at him with concern when he realized Edgeworth was lost in his own world.

“Yes.” He almost answered in a sigh.

“Okay then? How about we get out of here and grab some lunch instead?”

“I would love to.”

Like a date maybe?

(‘Why am I like this all the sudden!?’)

“Wright?”

“Yeah?”

“I…. I really loved your acting at the school festival.”

He meant to say something else but this is what he could bring himself to say at the moment.

“Aw, thanks, Edgeworth.” Phoenix grinned; glad he can still prove Edgeworth wrong whenever he doubts Phoenix’s abilities. Made him think of the good old days.

Edgeworth felt he wouldn’t be satisfied if he never saw Phoenix dressed nicely ever again. Especially if they could make it into an event where they could go somewhere fancy and do a… not date. No, maybe that won’t be possible. He can’t expect Phoenix, just because he’d be dressed as a prince, would start asking him to dance out of nowhere like Darcy did with Elizebeth. Even so, he wants to see this prince dressed back up, showing his best features once again.

He remembered Phoenix’s words from before.

(‘It’d be nice to return to acting again. I rather missed it.’)

Edgeworth knew what to do. Get him on the stage again.

Chapter 2: Getting Lost In The Role

Chapter Text

“Whoa now, what’s this?”

Phoenix looked at the audition paper with great interest that Edgeworth handed to him.

“I heard about this theater was looking to hire some actors and seeing how good you were, I thought it might interest you.”

“Interest me!? This is Romeo and Juliet, a classic! Anything with Shakespeare is a huge plus!”

His enthusiasm was a good sign. Edgeworth spent awhile online looking for any current productions that are looking for actors. Ones with romance as a focus mostly.

“I’m glad you like it since I felt this might be a better way to spend your time than in Borscht Bowl Club. You might be better suited for acting than piano playing.”

“Are you kidding me, since I lost my badge, this just might be my calling.”

“It is?”

“I almost forgotten how much I enjoyed it until I played at Trucy’s school. I’m also surprised you thought of me when you saw this.” He took Edgeworth’s hand and shook it enthusiastically. “Thank you, Edgeworth, I really appreciate it!”

Edgeworth expected it might take a few roadblocks to get Phoenix on the stage again but it seemed that he had nothing to worry about. It even made Phoenix smile and thank him like he really just made his day. It made him feel a little guilty that it was done under false pretense instead of being thoughtful and doing him a favor. But he was happy so that’s what mattered, yes?

*

“I got the lead!” Phoenix announced with pride.

“Amazing, daddy! I knew you could snatch up that role!” Trucy squealed in delight. “So which one, Romeo and Juliet?”

“Uhhh… Romeo obviously.” Phoenix couldn’t tell if she was joking or not.

“Congratulations, Wright. When will the rehearsals start?” Edgeworth asked (having ‘coincidently’ come over for tea that day).

“We start tomorrow at eight.”

“Cool, can I come watch the rehearsal?” Trucy asked.

“You have school, remember?”

“Rats.”

“I could go if that’s alright?” Edgeworth cleared his throat. “So I can tell Trucy how things went.”

“Really? Thanks, Uncle Miles, that would be great!”

“You really want to come over for rehearsals?” Phoenix was stunned. “Well, that’s a surprise. A welcome one though. I’d love to have your support.”

“Well, yes… for Trucy…” Edgeworth answered, trying not to blush.

*

“O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night as a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear – beauty too rich for use, for Earth too dear.”

Edgeworth sat in the seat where the audience would be, staring at Phoenix’s performance, mesmerized. He was talented as expected, though Edgeworth was a bit disappointed he wasn’t doing the deep voice just like when he played Mr. Darcy. But it made sense for this character, he’s supposed to be a bit of a hot-headed, love-struck, teenager. Not really Mr. Darcy material. Though it made stand out in his mind how a man in his middle age is playing a teenager. It seems to happen often in plays.

Either way, everyone on stage was acting their heart out. The woman playing Juliet was matching Phoenix’s acting skills.

“Saints do not move, though grant for prayer’s sake.”

“Then move not while my prayer’s effect I take.”

They kiss.

They kiss!!??

And it lingered. Why was the kiss lingering!?

He began to feel a twinge of regret. He should have not recommended Phoenix to a romantic play if he knew kissing would happen!

That was his fault for not thinking it through. Mr. Darcy and Elizbeth did not share a kissing scene in the play he watched so he had assumed it would have been the same here.

He shrunk back into his seat, now questioning if he wanted to be there on the opening show. This was just practice kissing. When the audience arrive in their seats for the opening, everything needs to be perfect, so the kissing might become really intense. Passionate even…

(‘What if Phoenix falls in love with the actress!? What if the kissing makes them grow closer and they start going out and it’s all my fault because I put the idea in him to return to acting!’)

Edgeworth tried to dismiss these ideas. Why is he overreacting? This is acting. Acting! These kisses mean nothing!

When rehearsals were over, Phoenix came over to him, grinning from ear to ear.

“So, what do you think of everything so far?”

“It’s… good.”

“Just good?” Phoenix snorted. “I guess I might have to up my game.”

(‘No! Don’t!’)

“You okay, Edgeworth?” Phoenix asked when he noticed Edgeworth’s discomfort.

“I just was wondering… what do you think of the lead you’re working with?”

“Oh, Angela? Yeah, she’s a great Juliet, don’t you think?”

“Um, yes. But,” Edgeworth doesn’t know how to phrase his question. “Do you find her attractive.”

“Heh, very much so.” Phoenix responded, looking rather pleased being paired up with her. “Lucky me, right?”

“Yes… lucky…” Edgeworth grumbled.

“Hey, what’s with the attitude? Are you going to tell me you have a crush on her?”

“Certainly not!” Edgeworth snapped. “Now excuse me, I have work at home!”

“Uh, okay? Thanks for coming to show support. I guess.”

It made Edgeworth feel awful how he was acting, so he added one last thing before he left.

“I thought you were amazing up there.”

He left before he could see Phoenix’s reaction. He’d rather not see it if he was honest. And he hated to admit how embarrassed he was on how he behaved. He was a grown man in his middle age, not some lovestruck, clingy, teenager.

Perhaps he was going into this all wrong. If he was on stage with Phoenix…

No, that wouldn’t work. He made it clear before that he’s no actor. Besides, if did manage that somehow, he didn’t want to be some useless side character. But what else would he expect? Be his love interest? Not many plays have same-sex love interest as far as he knows. Unless it is a company theater that uses all-male actors like in the old days. But he is most certainly not going to start wearing a dress!

However, maybe he can use his lack of acting abilities to his advantage?

*

“You are interested in acting? Really?”

Phoenix looked at Edgeworth in awe at that sudden suggestion.

“Indeed. Watching you on stage has inspired me to want to try it myself.”

“Well, I’ll be.” Phoenix grinned. “I did not think I could ever inspire you of all people. Are you sure there is no hidden motive behind this?”

“What do you mean?” Edgeworth tried not to let a hint of panic leave his mouth.

“Are you sure it’s not to try to impress your crush?” Phoenix said mischievously.

“She.Is.Not.My.Crush!” Edgeworth growled.

“Okay, point taken.” Phoenix chuckled, dropping the subject. “Now, if you are really serious about acting, I could recommend some courses I know are still available-”

“No, I don’t want to take courses.” Edgeworth interrupted. “I was hoping… you could teach me.”

“Huh. You want me to teach you?” Phoenix scratched his chin. “I mean, I’m not sure I’m what you call a teacher.”

“But you are so good at acting, you must know what you are doing.”

“Knowing and teaching are two different things.”

“You could try.” Edgeworth suggested. “I’d feel more comfortable if I tried acting for the first time if I was with you.”

He didn’t mean to say that out loud, but it seemed to convince Phoenix.

“I guess if you put it that way, it wouldn’t hurt to try.”

Success!

*

“Why do you want me to wear my Romeo outfit?” Phoenix asked as he was dressed in his stage outfit.

“It will help you get into character, correct?”

“Perhaps but you’re wearing the same as always.” Phoenix looked at Edgeworth’s usual outfit. “Then again, it does look like it came from the costume department. You know what, it’s perfect.”

“Very funny.” Edgeworth replied drily.

“Anyway, now that ‘we’re’ both dressed for the part are you ready for your first lesson even on your busy schedule?”

“I have nothing to do today, so if you could teach me a little?”

“I’d love to.” Phoenix had to admit he began to like being a teacher to Edgeworth of all people. “By the time we’re done, you’ll be a professional star.”

“I don’t think I want to go that far…”

“Of course you do. When it comes to acting, one should strive to fully become the character they are playing.”

“As you do for Romeo?”

“Sure do.” Phoenix frowned. “Unless you found something off playing him?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Oh no, you don’t get to brush this off. If there is something I can improve on, I need to know.”

Edgeworth’s brain scrambled to think of something, only being able to really critique one thing that bothered him.

“The kiss seemed… off.”

“Ah, you caught that, huh?”

(‘I did?’)

“Yes, it felt a little wrong.” Edgeworth said to conceal his surprise.

(‘That you kissed someone that wasn’t me.’)

“Yeah, kissing scenes are little difficult for me to pull off smoothly.” Phoenix shrugged. “Probably because it feels so personal. Even if it’s just acting, I’d rather kiss someone I love. Heh, sounds cheesy, I know.”

“I don’t believe so.”

(‘Perhaps we can start practicing with this…?')

“Well, why don’t we get started?”

“Yes!” Edgeworth snapped out his daydream.

“Wow, someone is ready to learn.”

Phoenix took out the script and handed it over to Edgeworth who flipped through them.

“What character do you want to try out as?”

“Not sure… maybe the one with the most lines?”

“You want to try a big part already? Don’t you want to start small?”

“It’s just practice, isn’t it?” Edgeworth argued. “Besides, I never start small.”

“Uh-huh. So you want to be Juliet or something?”

“Well, I can’t be Romeo since that is you.” Edgeworth tried to justify his reasoning. “And it might help to have your own practice partner before the play starts. You could improve even more.”

“I thought you were the one who needed practice?”

“Let’s start reading the lines.” Edgeworth said quickly as he buried his face into the script. “It will help get in character if we start.”

“I’m the only one wearing a costume here.”

“And it looks perfect – it would suit you more to wear something other than that gray hoodie of yours.”

“Even so, I find these Middle Ages costume looking ridiculous, whether worn by the wealthy or not.” He muttered while idly flapping the cape he was wearing.

“I find them rather charming.”

“You do?” He begins looking up and down at Edgeworth. “Well, given your fashion choice, I suppose you would like them.”

“What is THAT supposed to mean!?”

“Nothing. Nothing at all.”

They started simple with just reading from the script, Phoenix already getting really into it.

“’If I profane with my unworthiest hand, this holy shrine, the gentle sin is this: my lips two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.’”

“’Good pilgrim, you do your hand too much, which mannerly devotion shows in –‘ pffft!”

Edgeworth let out a loud snerk before laughing at the ridiculousness of it all.

“Um, you wanna focus there, Edgeworth?”

“My apologies!” He gasped out through his chuckles. “These two just met and they already saying such nonsensical things as if they’ve known each other in an intimate level!”

“Yeah, that’s two horny teenagers for you.” Phoenix agreed. “Still a damn good story though.”

“Can we practice on another play? Just for a few minutes?”

“Uh, if you like? What do you have in mind?”

Edgeworth tried not to show himself fidgeting.

“Pride and Prejudice?”

“Huh? I just did that one.”

“Yes, but I want to take key notes since you were so good…”

“Oh, I think I get it!” Phoenix flashed a knowing look. “So you are considering the part of Mr. Darcy after all, eh? Makes sense since you were made for that role.”

“I suppose.”

"Hey, I'll be all too glad to help you with that. This role has you written all over - you'd be the perfect Mr. Darcy!"

('I disagree. You are the perfect Mr. Darcy.')

Phoenix got out the scripts from Pride and Prejudice, having hung onto them. He handed one to Edgeworth and turned to the page of Mr. Darcy’s first lines.

“Then you can read his parts here, you won’t need to change your voice unlike me since yours fits the role.”

“No, I want you to do it.”

Phoenix eyed him quizzically.

“Because you did it so well, I want to study it, so it’d be easier for me to imitate it!” Edgeworth said quickly.

“Do you want me to do the voice too?”

“If you could…”

Phoenix began to get suspicious; Edgeworth knew. But when he read his lines with that same attractive deep voice, Edgeworth felt himself melt. He wanted him to talk directly to him like this. Eventually he had the courage to ask after some back-and-forth practice.

“Wright? Can we do a scene between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Because I struggle with romance.” He added quickly.

“You’re telling me. The amount of woman I’ve seen flirt with you with little to no reaction is staggering.” Phoenix moved towards the last few pages. “Maybe if I show you how to do a heartfelt proposal, you can try to copy how I do it.”

Heartfelt proposal? Ah, the scene where Mr. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth. He would love to do this scene with him, pretending it was real.

“Should I do Elizabeth’s lines?”

“If you like. Practice makes perfect.”

They started at the beginning of the scene, but Edgeworth kept getting distracted by Phoenix’s voice that he didn’t fully commit to his role. Phoenix tried to correct him.

“Hey now, try to focus, put yourself in the character’s shoes.”

Edgeworth cleared his throat, trying again and put his heart into it. He wanted to be able to impress Phoenix in some way, but that voice kept distracting him.

“You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”

This is the scene where they exchanged their feelings, not through physical means, but sometimes plays would add a kiss at this very moment. Even Phoenix was improvising by reaching his hand out towards him. Edgeworth took it.

When that hand now holding his began to close, Edgeworth did not think as he did his own improvising, leaning forward until lips met.

He did not know what possessed him to do this, if he really allowed himself to get lost in the role, but it seemed the only opportunity he’d ever get in life to get this close to Phoenix. He had to admit he lingered a little before moving his face away from Phoenix’s a few inches, looking at him with half-lidded eyes while Phoenix’s were wide open.

“Um, wow… Here I might accuse you for really getting into the role but there is not kiss scene here.”

“There isn’t, is there? But doesn’t it make it better?”

(‘Wait, what am I saying? What am I even doing!?’)

No, this is fake! The words, the confession, even the kiss which he indicated without Phoenix’s consent – all fake! Phoenix doesn’t talk like this, he doesn’t even sound like this! And of course, why would he ever confess his love for him!? He’s nothing more than a rival and friend to him! Any confession he’d hear from him would be fake!

“I’m so sorry…” Edgeworth muttered, deeply ashamed, knowing he just crossed the line.

“Edgeworth, that wasn’t acting, was it?”

“I need to go!” Edgeworth pushed Phoenix away, hurried towards the door. “I have a case to work on!”

“You said you don’t have anything going on today.”

“Well, now I do!”

Phoenix would have stopped him if he wasn’t still half-stunned from the kiss. He could hear the door open and close, knowing that Edgeworth left. He could already imagine Edgeworth hopping into his fancy red car and driving off. He probably already did and is now long gone.

Phoenix went over to his phone he placed on the end table, picking it up and dialing before placing it over his ear.

“Hi, Trucy, are you currently busy, sweetie? No? Okay then, I have a huge favor to ask you.”

Chapter 3: Stage Confession

Chapter Text

Edgeworth had no idea what to do to ease the discomfort and anxiety that kept haunting him. He messed up by allowing his emotions to take over and now he might have ruined everything. What would he do if he sees Phoenix again? He can’t avoid him forever, that much is clear. Would Phoenix pretend nothing happened? Would he avoid him? Does he hate him?

At first he was a little relieved that no phone call or text was coming from Phoenix but the longer time went on and the phone stayed silent, the more heartbroken he felt. Maybe Phoenix really is avoiding him. Can he blame him?

When he heard the Steel Samurai theme ringing out, he snatched the phone up in a half second.

“Wright!?”

“Yes, hello.”

Edgeworth’s face fell when it was the wrong Wright on the phone. Maybe she is calling on his behalf.

“Trucy, did your father ask to call?”

“No, I’m the one whose calling.”

“I see.”

He should have known it wasn’t going to be that easy.

“Anway, can you please help me with something?”

“What happened?”

*

Edgeworth arrived outside the place where Trucy held most of her magic shows, Trucy waving at him when she saw him approaching.

“Thank you for coming, Uncle Miles! I really need you to find the culprit who stole all my magical props! You are good at finding clues at crime scenes, so I know you’ll find something amiss.”

“Why didn’t you ask for your father for help?”

“He’s busy performing at the moment.”

“Hmph.”

Edgeworth didn’t mean to voice his annoyance. Edgeworth is going through a crisis and Phoenix is off acting, probably practicing another kissing scene with Angela, trying to forget what Edgeworth did. He’d probably prefer an Angela over someone… someone like him.

“I have an opening act tomorrow so I’m counting on you, Uncle Miles.”

“Ah, yes. I will do my best.” He tried giving her a reassuring smile.

If he can distract himself with a case, even if it’s about stolen items, he could stop feeling sorry for himself and be productive. Plus, he couldn’t say no to Trucy especially if someone would be so degenerated to steal from her. He would make sure he’ll find the culprit and make them face justice.

He headed towards the stage in the back, seeing it was completely bare. All the colorful and imaginative props were indeed missing, so he intended to investigate as soon as he’s on the stage. But he didn’t make it halfway when the lights went out.

He froze. It became pitch black, and Edgeworth couldn’t see a thing, making him extremely nervous. Was it a power outage or…?

A light came back on but only on the stage, that very light shining down on a figure standing in the middle of said stage. A man with wavey dark hair, wearing a formal evening wear in a traditional style. Edgeworth looked at this man with great suspicion. Was this the culprit? Was he somehow trying to make a big show of the theft and gloat?

Then the man stood straight up, looking directly at Edgeworth. Looking back at him, it took only a split second for Edgeworth to realize he’s staring at Phoenix Wright!

His first instinct is to run. He wasn’t ready to face Phoenix just yet. However, what stopped him from fleeing was that he was fully dressed in the Mr. Darcy outfit once again, wig and all. If he hadn’t seen him like this before he would not have recognized him. But why on earth was he dressed like this?

Phoenix moved towards the edge of the stage, the light following his movements, making a hand gesture that is beckoning Edgeworth to get on stage with him. Edgeworth would have questioned out loud what on earth is going on right now but with Phoenix’s determined look on him, Edgeworth figured he might as well go along with this and see where this is going. He can’t deny he’s curious as he climbed onto the stage.

“Nnnogh!”

Edgeworth let out a surprised shriek when another light lit up suddenly onto the stage, right directly on him. He didn’t have much time to process this new turn of events when Phoenix began to speak, looking at him with fondness and with a hint of angst.

“You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love… I love… I love you.”

The way he stumbled upon those words at the end made it sound like a real confession, as if he was nervous, using that voice once again that could turn the prosecutor into a mess of emotions. The deep voice once again cracked where his actual voice came out. The way he looked at him so earnestly when saying it made it seem real.

“I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.”

He outstretched his hand towards him and without thinking Edgeworth took it. He felt himself pulled close, right into Phoenix’s arms whose handsome face was fixated on him. Edgeworth knew he was blushing, thinking for a moment this might all be a dream. Phoenix all dressed up nice, clean-shaven, talking in a rich smooth voice Edgeworth became obsessed over. All for him. If only it were real.

“I love you, Miles Edgeworth.” Phoenix said in his normal voice.

Oh. Oh! This is real!

Phoenix was not so much acting but actually confessing!

“If it’s alright with you,” Phoenix continued. “May I have the honor of kissing you – mmmppfh!”

Edgeworth didn’t bother to wait as soon as these words left his mouth, kissing Phoenix intensely. He fully took the time to enjoy Phoenix’s soft lips now that he could with Phoenix being fully on board, who kissed him back with the same passion as it felt a long time coming. He panted a bit when they stopped for a breather.

“You don’t waste no time, do you?”

“Why should I when I have permission to do what I secretly longed for years?” Edgeworth felt a bit guilty. “Sorry about before.”

Phoenix just rolled his eyes.

“Oh please, if you didn’t kiss me out of nowhere, it could have taken even more years before one of us finally got the hint.”

Edgeworth chuckled a little. He had a point there.

“You never cared about acting.”

“No.” Edgeworth admitted.

“Just liked seeing me dress up, eh?”

“Hm. And your acting is wonderful.”

“I guessed at first you might have had a crush on Mr. Darcy if I am being honest. He’d seem more of your type.”

“Not really. I just find you very attractive when you don’t walk around in clothes that makes it look like you never bother doing your laundry.”

“Is that so?”

“You make a sexy Mr. Darcy though… surprisingly.”

“Yes, I seem to get that a lot.” He cleared his throat before doing the Mr. Darcy voice once again. “May I have this dance, Mr. Edgeworth?”

Edgeworth almost hated how him doing that voice always made him swoon to the point he couldn’t deny him. Not that he would really want to deny a dance with Phoenix.

“You may.”

Phoenix took hold of Edgeworth and led him in a simple step. Nothing complicated but that was fine, Edgeworth was more focused on the old-fashioned romantic music that was now playing in the background.

“Who is operating the sets? Trucy?”

“Yeah, she agreed to rush off to be behind the scenes after she lured you into this place.”

Edgeworth could have sworn he heard a mischievous giggle in the background that sounded like Trucy.

“Don’t say it like that. You make it sound like a trap.”

“Not my intention. I just figured you would love a full-on confession from Mr. Darcy himself.”

“I don’t recall this confession from the play.”

“No, it’s from the movie. They upped the romantic confession so I thought you might like if someone was confessing their love you like this.”

“Hm, maybe. But I preferred the confession where you used your own words and voice, simple as it was.” He placed his head on Phoenix’s shoulder. “It was from you and felt so real.”

Upon hearing those words, Phoenix stumbled, accidentally stepping on Edgeworth’s foot.

“Ow, Wright!”

“Sorry, sorry!” Phoenix apologized before letting out a frustrated sigh. “Nah, I guess in the end, I’m just no Mr. Darcy.”

“That’s just fine by me.”

Edgeworth reached his hand up towards Phoenix, removing the wig from him. As much as he liked the tidy and dark wavey look that fits Phoenix so well, Edgeworth wanted to be dancing with Phoenix Wright, not somebody else.

After a while of their shared slow dancing, the music stopped, and they decided to finish. But they weren’t ready to call their time together quits just yet. Phoenix straightened his outfit, catching how Edgeworth was staring

“You like me all nicely dressed, huh? Perhaps I can dress up more often if you really love it so much.”

“R-really?”

“Sure, but in turn, you will need to do me a favor.”

“What is it?”

“I don’t know about this…”

“Aw, come on, give it a chance. I even got them in your color.”

“Yes, I can see that…”

Edgeworth still looked dubious at the hoodie and sweatpants Phoenix got for him. He really wants him to wear this?

“Just… why?”

“If you’re going to criticize my style, maybe you can try it on yourself to see why I find them comfortable.”

“I don’t… they aren’t…”

“Your type of fashion? No, obviously not, but it wouldn’t kill you to wear something casual.”

“Fine.”

Edgeworth decided to just go to the other room to change, just to get Phoenix off his back. It wasn’t like they were stepping out for anyone else to see.

When he returned to the living room, he felt he should be embarrassed but he felt anything but. He had to admit it was extremely comfortable. The insides of the hoodie were soft and warm, the long sleeves made him want to place his hands inside it.

“Heh, you still manage to look amazing even in casual clothes.” Phoenix mused.

Edgeworth would have made a sarcastic remark, but he didn’t feel that Phoenix was lying. Phoenix went ahead and picked up a warm cup of tea that he made for Edgeworth before sitting down on the couch.

“Now come here and make yourself comfortable.”

Edgeworth couldn’t say no. He walked over to Phoenix, taking the tea from his hands, before sitting next to him.

“Aw, come on. You can do better than that.”

“I can take a hint.” Edgeworth sighed, adjusting so that he was sitting on Phoenix’s lap, legs resting on the free space of the couch as the upper half of his body sunk into Phoenix, holding the tea between his hands, feeling its warmth that added to the comfort.

“Happy?”

“Very.” Phoenix wrapped his arms around his now-boyfriend. “It’ll do you good to let loose and not always be uptight…. And you look so adorable dressed like this.”

Edgeworth snorted, trying to sip his tea.

“So because I want to see you dress up, you want to see me dress down?”

“You criticize my fashion style so I thought it might do you good to try wearing it to see why I love dressing casually.”

“I can see the appeal, but it still might do YOU some good to dress nice when going out.”

“Oh? Going out? Like a date?” Phoenix asked teasingly.

“Y-yes, exactly. If you have something suitable to wear.”

“Maybe I will go suit shopping with you after all. I can wear it on our dates on these occasions.”

“I would love that.” Edgeworth smiled as he snuggled closer. “And I suppose we can have casual dates at home where I can wear… this.”

“Aw, you’d love that and you know it.”

“Perhaps.”

“If we go on fancy dates though, would you like to go out dancing and me using ‘that’ voice on occasion?”

Edgeworth blushed a little, sipping his tea.

“I wouldn’t be opposed to that.”

Phoenix cleared his throat nervously.

“Perhaps when we take our relationship to the next level, would you like it if I used that voice in the bedroom?”

Edgeworth nearly spat out his tea.

“Okay, okay, I know it’s too early to discuss this-”

“God yes!” Edgeworth replied enthusiastically.

“Oh. Good to know.” Phoenix chuckled. “I guess we got that covered.”

Edgeworth shuddered at the very thought of this. It was true it might be still early in the relationship, but this was already something he was looking forward to. He decided to quickly change the subject.

“Are you going to continue acting?”

“Probably. Unless I get my badge back someday.”

“In any case, can you star in fewer romantic plays?”

Phoenix raised an eyebrow at this statement.

“Ones with required kissing scenes at least.” Edgeworth explained quickly.

“You don’t want me to kiss anyone else, do you?”

“Obviously.” Edgeworth shrunk a little in Phoenix’s arms, embarrassed, hoping he wasn’t coming off as possessive. Phoenix just smiled and held him closer in his arms.

“Well, I think we can work something out with that since I don’t want to kiss anyone but you.”
