Struck brightly by the winter
When the snow falls thick and silent
I can only hear you breathing

—Snow Day by Matt Pond PA

In honor of One Bed Wednesday, I’m going to be posting a little "there was only one bed" story. A drabble/chapter will be posted each Wednesday for the rest of January!

Chapter 1: snow storm

Summary:

prompt: snow storm

Chapter Text

“How can there only be one room available?” A muscle clenches in Lockwood’s jaw, as he stares the bored concierge down.

Somewhere between the train from London to the countryside, their harrowing case, a worse than unexpected snow storm, train shutdowns, and arriving at the village’s only inn, his usual composure has disappeared.

But Lucy has also been awake for over twenty-four hours. Her feet ache. She’s covered in cobwebs. She smells like stale sausage rolls.

Quite simply, she is done.

Ignoring Lockwood’s yelp of protest, she scoops the room key and complimentary toiletries off the counter. “We’ll take it.”

Chapter 2: icicle

Notes:

prompt: icicle

Chapter Text

Post-shower, Lucy collapses face first into the single bed, as Lockwood wanders about their room. Blankets and sheets ruffle, but when the mattress doesn’t dip with his weight, she lifts her head.

“You can’t sleep there,” she cries, spying the pathetic pallet assembled on the bare floor. “You’ll turn into an icicle!”

Bickering ensues. Lockwood insists she take the bed; she maintains sharing is fine. No, it’s necessary, given the temperature.

Finally, he sighs, resigned. His weary eyes seek reassurance. “If you’re sure—”

“Positive.

He eases into bed beside her. Suddenly, Lucy’s tummy feels fluttery. She blames the sausage rolls.

Chapter 3: cold

Notes:

prompt: cold

Chapter Text

The third time Lockwood almost tumbles out of bed, Lucy considers cursing his Victorian-esque efforts to preserve her personal space. Instead, she rolls over and yanks him towards her.

“What are you—”

“It’s cold, the bed’s small, and we aren’t going to get any sleep like this,” she snaps, rearranging them into a more comfortable position. She hesitates, realizing she may have crossed a line. “Is this—”

“Fine,” Lockwood says quickly. His hand finds her waist. Ankles and calves brush. Bodies relax as they melt together. “It’s good, Luce.”

She slowly drifts off, finally warm and content in his embrace.

Chapter 4: snow globe

Notes:

prompt: snow globe

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Lucy wakes up to a snow globe outside their window. Even deep in sleep, Lockwood’s arms hold her tight.

He stirs slowly, eyelashes fluttering on pale cheeks. They’re a tangle of intertwined limbs, messy hair, and hesitant smiles. The peace feels so delicate it might shatter.

“It’s early,” Lockwood whispers, breath rustling her hair. “Trains aren’t running. Let’s go back to sleep.”

“Okay.”

He lays on his back, so she can rest her head against his chest. Lips brush her forehead, soft as the still falling snow. For once, there’s no place to go, no place to be, except here.
