Chapter Text
The town of Ebott was a little slice of heaven on Earth.
Nestled between the mountain of the town's name sake and the sea, the town was almost always tranquil. Mount Ebott loomed over the town, casting a spell of serenity as it acted as a natural barrier to the outside world. Of course the town wasn't actually cut off from other civilizations, just that it was easy to forget about the world's woes while living in Ebott.
There's old magic in the town's roots. There had been stories long ago how mages were fabled to have lived with monsters long ago. The very same monsters that had emerged from underneath the mountain, four years ago. The town was both a natural and unnatural wonder.
At least that's what the new destination magazines were claiming.
A gentle breeze rustled the wind chime hanging just outside the storefront of a quaint bookstore. The streets outside were quiet with it being the town's off season, but not for long.
Spring was just beginning. The last snow of the winter had melted away just days ago. The birds had just started singing their sweet songs, the flowers weren't quite ready to bloom yet. The air still had a bit of a chill to it in the morning breeze. Soon it would be in full force and the tourists would return to enjoy the peace that only Ebott could provide.
You hummed sweetly to a tune stuck in your head as you diligently restocked the shelves by the main window of the book store with new arrivals. You had the door propped open to let in the warm spring breeze through the store, hoping to air out the stuffy smell from the store’s old heater.
Last autumn was a turning point in your life. You had decided you had enough of studying your life away for a degree you most likely wouldn't be putting to use. You hardly had any peace in your life, chaos swurmed you, when your grandfather told you about a friend of his who was looking for some full time help in managing a bookstore he owned. You jumped at the opportunity, diving into this new life head first and never looked back.
It has been the best choice you've made in a long time.
“WOWIE. I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A LIBRARY ON THE MAIN STRIP. “
You paused your humming, peeking over your shoulder at the patron entering the store. A tall skeleton was looking around the humble bookstore you managed, eyes wide in wonder.
It was…a little jarring for you to see an animated skeleton in the store.Honestly, you had briefly wondered if you were seeing things. Or maybe he was some premanission. But this was Ebott. The town closest to the Monster's home turf. The first place that accepted the other worldly beings into their society as equals. So a monster that was a walking, talking skeleton wasn't too out there. Just the other week, you had a customer who was a giant jello creature who spoke with wiggles.
Smiling, you quit your restocking as you ventured towards the register to tend to the new customer. “Good Morning, sir! Actually, we're a book store that's recently come under new management. Is there anything I can help you find, today?”
“A BOOKSTORE? THAT'S EVEN BETTER!” Your customer was quite the animated soul. Every movement he made was exaggerated. He peered at all the shelves you had neatly arranged. It was almost childlike, and you wonder if he might have been a child, the lack of stripes on the t-shirt under his red and white letterman style jacket argued otherwise.
He spun around to face you, the red scarf he wore around his neck bellowed behind him in a non-existent wind. “DO YOU HAVE ANY BOOKS ON PASTA? OR COOK BOOKS ON DIFFERENT PASTA DISHES?”
“Absolutely!” Your voice had a little more energy, his positive attitude was contagious.”I can pick out a few selections, if you like. We have a variety of cookbooks and get a new shipment every month. “
“THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL, LITTLE BOOK KEEPER. I WANT SOME NEW IDEAS TO TRY AND IMPROVE MY MASTERPIECES EVEN FURTHER!” He clapped his gloved hands together with a unique sounding laugh.
A giggle left your lips as you left your post from behind the till counter, and led the tall monster towards the left side of the store. “ I hope we have the right book that can help give you the right inspiration for your cooking. Is there a specific pasta dish that you enjoy the most?”
“I HAVE FOUND SPAGHETTI IS THE MOST VERSATILE AND SUPERIOR PASTA DISH!”
Odd choice of words. You tried to mask your confusion. When you thought of spaghetti dishes, you never really considered the pasta to be versatile. Maybe the skeleton knew more about the simple dish than you. You hummed thoughtfully to yourself as you arrived at the cooking section of books. You browsered the selections available briefly before pulling a book from the shelf that you thought would be fitting for the monster. 1001 Pastas From Around The World.
“How about this one? There's several recipes to choose from and the instructions I've found to be very simple and easy to follow.” You held the book out for him to take.
The skeleton gently took the book from your hand with a gasp. “WOWIE! A THOUSAND RECIPES! I CAN'T WAIT TO TRY THEM ALL.”
Your smile wavered a bit, he could be serious…could he? “That might take you a while.” You chuckled nervously, fiddling with the strings to the apron you wore around your waist. “That's enough Pasta dishes to last you a little over three years…”
“I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, PLAN TO TRY ALL OF THESE WONDERFUL DISHES IN A YEAR.” He proudly boasted and tucked the book under his arm. He grabbed both of your hands in his, smiling brightly at you.
“THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL SUGGESTION. I WILL HAVE TO BRING YOU A SAMPLE NEXT TIME I COME VISIT YOUR LOVELY STORE, HUMAN.”
Your smile was wavering as you struggled to think of how to respond to the skeleton's eagerness. What does one say to an animated skeleton monster claiming he could make a thousand pasta dishes in a year?
“Um… thank you?” Your voice cracked and you had to clear your throat. “Can I help you find anything else? Or would you like to check out?” “
“NO, I BELIEVE THAT THIS SHALL BE ALL THAT I REQUIRE FOR THE DAY! BUT I WILL CERTAINLY WILL HAVE TO COME BACK AND BROWSER YOUR COLLECTION SOME MORE WHEN I HAVE THE TIME!”
“Well alrighty then, I can check you out at the front of the store. “ You guided the skeleton back to the cash register.
“YOU HAVE BEEN VERY HELPFUL, HUMAN.I WILL DEFINITELY HAVE TO TELL MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS ABOUT YOUR AMAZING COLLECTION. MAY I KNOW YOUR NAME?” The skeleton asked as he handed his book back to you to ring up on the cash register.
You felt your cheeks grow warm from his compliment and question. Softly, you gave him your name as you packaged his book with care, wrapping it in a protective covering before placing it in a bag.
He said your name back to you, making your face grow even warmer. “THAT'S A LOVELY NAME. IT SUITS YOU WELL! JUST AS PAPYRUS SUITS I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS!”
Papyrus handed you the correct amount of change for his purchase and you sorted it away in your till drawer, before handing him his packaged book.
“I hope you have a good day, Papyrus. Thank you for visiting our store!”
“I WISH YOU A GOOD DAY AS WELL! I HOPE I WILL BE ABLE TO SEE YOU SOON!” He parted ways with a brilliant smile.
You couldn't help, but watch as he left, taking off down the sidewalk in a brisk jog towards the mountain.
What an odd, but gentle soul.

Chapter Text
When you had met Papyrus earlier in the week, you hadn't known that the strange but pleasant encounter with the animated skeleton would lead to warm fleeting morning hellos.
For the last four days, the tall skeleton had been a recurring visitor in the early morning, just as you were opening the shop's doors for the day. He was always jogging by, would call your name in a heartfelt greeting, ask how you were, before scurrying off to his destination.
It was quickly becoming a routine you were looking forward to and today was no different.
You had just propped the store's door open and had a watering can in hand. You were just about to tend to the budding flowers that you had planted in the garden box just a few days prior, when a familiar call of your name brought a smile to your tired face.
Setting the watering can down on the ground, you turned to greet the jogging Skeleton as he came into sight. “Good morning Papyrus!!” You called out to the monster with a friendly wave.
The skeleton was beaming. Orange tinting his bony cheeks as he came to jog in place before the bookstore. “HOW ARE THE FLOWERS TODAY? ARE THEY BLOOMING YET?”
You let out a light laugh shaking your head. “No, they still have maybe a week or so before then. They're still just little sprouts. Are you doing some more training today, or just enjoying the gorgeous weather?”
“I’M DOING BOTH! NYEH HEH HEH!” He laughed, continuing to jog in place. “I TRIED ANOTHER RECIPE FROM THE BOOK I BOUGHT! I BELIEVE IT WAS SQUASH RAVIOLI!”
“ How did it turn out? Good, I hope!” You tightened the apron you wore, before bending down to pick up your watering can again.
“I WAS GOOD! MY BROTHERS EVEN ACTUALLY ATE IT! I EVEN GOT COMPLIMENTED! SURELY IT WAS MY MASTER CHIEF SKILLS THAT ELEVATED THE DISH. “ He posed his upper body in a stereotypical hero pose, while still jogging in place. “THOUGH I WAS QUITE CONFUSED. FOR SOMETHING CALLED SQUASH RAVIOLI, THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF ‘SQUASHING’ INVOLVED.”
You couldn't hold back the chuckle you let out as you started to water your budding flowers. “That is a conundrum, but I'm glad it went well. ”
After the last several days of passing conversations with Papyrus, you've learned that the monster, though he has all the passion in the world for cooking, has no sense for the skill. Especially on the first visit after buying the cooking book, and he asked you with a genuine heart, why there was a lack of glitter in the recipes.
“ I'M PLANNING ON MAKE A MANICOTTA? OR IS IT MANICOTTAYE? FOR LUNCH TODAY!”
You hummed as you worked on the store's flowerbed. “ I think it’s pronounced manicotti. It's a wonderful recipe and one of my favorite pasta dishes. “
“ THEN I'LL HAVE TO BRING YOU SOME! AS LONG AS I HAVE LEFTOVERS, BUT OUR HOUSE OFTEN DOESN'T.” Papyrus almost sounded disappointed. Before you could reassure him it was okay, he was already switching gears. “I COULD ALWAYS JUST MAKE MORE, NYEH HEH HEH! HOWEVER, I MUST BE GOING NOW, I'LL HAVE TO BRING YOU IT TOMORROW!!”
You really didn't want to hurt his feelings, but you were just slightly apprehensive about trying his cooking. Perhaps it was a good thing the store would be closed tomorrow.
Finished watering the planets, you placed down your watering can and faced Papyrus while drying your hands off on your apron. “Actually, I won't be here tomorrow. The store is closed on Sundays. We'll have to take a rain check on it for next week.”
You offered your hand to Papyrus to shake, smiling. “I'll see you next week?”
The Skeleton almost looked sad, his smile falling momentarily, before returning even brighter as he grabbed your hand and used it to pull you into a tight hug. “THEN I SHALL BRING IT ON MONDAY WHEN I COME TO VISIT AGAIN!”
The odd hug was brief and the skeleton had never stopped jogging in place during it. You were left baffled as he left with a wave. “I WILL SEE YOU SOON!”
You scratched the side of or face while waving back at the skeleton monster, “Okay, take care-”
“OH! I ALMOST FORGOT!” The skeleton was back pedalling, heading back for your store at rapid speed until he was in front of you. “MY BROTHER MIGHT BE STOPPING BY TODAY. I TOLD HIM ABOUT YOUR AMAZING SELECTIONS AND HE SAID HE MIGHT COME TO SEE WHAT YOU HAVE IN STOCK. NOW THE GREAT PAPYRUS WILL BE OFF!”
And without letting you get another word in, Papyrus was gone again.
You watched as he disappeared down the sidewalk, heat coloring your face. Papyrus could be so unpredictable at times.
Shaking your head, you lightly smacked your cheeks with your hands. “Okay! We've got work to do!”
Saturdays were always your busiest days. It never failed that you were always beat by the end of the day and ready for a day off afterwards. Even if you didn't have many customers during the business hours, Saturdays were when you counted the inventory and deeped cleaned the shop so it was ready for another week come Mondays.
Today wasn't the worst day you've had, but it was certainly the busiest the book store had been since last tourist season. So when things finally slowed down and your count was finished during the late afternoon, you took it upon yourself to eat the simple packed lunch you had made that morning and settled behind the cash register to take a little reprieve.
You had just bit into your decadent meal of bread, ham, and cheese when someone suddenly spoke-!
“ heh. it is a little stuffy in here, that must be why the door's open.”
You jumped up from your seat, nearly falling off the stool behind the counter and dropping your sandwich on the ground in the process. Your breath was quick, mouth full with your first and now only bite of your lunch. Your eyes scanned the store, before landing on a very different skeleton monster than you knew.
He was short. Well, shorter than Papyrus and closer to your height. He donned a bulky blue hoodie with his hands stuffed in the pockets. It made him look a little pudgy despite the obvious bony build he had. While he was different from the taller skeleton, you could see some similarities. Their shoulders seemed to be the same width, their cheekbones looked alike when they smiled-
"you okay there, pal?” The newcomer asked, his skull tilting with the question, his lazy smile falling a little flat.
Shit. Have you been staring?
You quickly swallowed your mouth full of your bread, ham, and cheese; before plastering on your customer service smile. “Sorry about that! I didn't hear you come in, so I was taking a little break.” You stood from the stool and kicked your ruined sandwich out of view with your foot. You'd pick it up later and mourn its loss after he left. “?”
He stared at you for a moment, giving you enough time to see how different his eyes were from Papyrus, before speaking again. “ nah. don't worry, pal. i like to be well read too. keeps the bones strong and all.”
Did he just…? No, surely you just misunderstood him. “R-Right.” You quickly used some hand sanitizer that was stored by the cash register, and rubbed your hands clean. “Is there anything I can help you with today?”
His smile grew wide again, causing his eye sockets to get narrow, almost like he heard a bad joke. “ my bro recently brought home a cookbook from here, so i figured i'd come and check it out.”
Oh, so he is Papyrus’ brother! Your smile became more genuine. “So you're related to Papyrus! He told me there was a chance you might stop by today. I'm glad you could make it!”
“ heh, yup that's my bro. he's the coolest dude i know.” His shoulders seem to visibly relax as he extends his hand out towards. “the name's sans. sans the skeleton.”
You lean of the counter and grabbed his hand to shake-
“PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT!!”
The store was dead silent as you both locked eyes, yours wide and his narrowed with obvious mirth. His hand was firmly grasping yours and you could feel the cool plastic in his palm.
At first you weren't sure how to respond to the fart noise deafening your ears, but as an awkward silence settled between you, you caved in to your inner child and laughed.
You bent over, the sound bellowing out of you as your whole body shook, hand still holding on to the skeleton's. His own smooth laughter joined yours. Your chuckles caused your stomach to quiver, making your breath hard to catch and you.. oh good you started to snort.
The sound shocked you out of your fit of fun, heat blooming on your face and Sans laughed even harder. He pulled his hand away from yours and you tried to compose yourself. No matter how much you tried to not feel embarrassed, it seemed you couldn't fight off the blush that settled along your cheek bones.
“the ole’ whoopie cushion in the hand trick never gets old. it's a classic.” He snickered, putting his hand back into his coat pocket. “that was a good laugh.” He added winking. “ i wouldn't mind knowing the name of the one who has it.”
“Oh, um…” You gave him your name less confidently than you normally, still trying to recover from the fact that you had snorted in front of the monster. “ So-” You cleared your throat, “ Is there something I can help you find today? Or are you just browsing?”
“i figured i'd come and see if you had any physics or anatomy books. see, i haven't really been feeling like my shelf lately. i was kinda hoping you talking wordy to me would help me get out of it. “
“Pfft-”-You stifled another round of laughter as you left your post to guide the monster towards the non-fiction and educational section of the store. “That's not good, you've gotta stay true to your shelf.”
“ yep, doc said a book a day keeps reality away.”
You let out another round of giggles, having to brace yourself against a bookshelf for the dizzying moment. “You're quite the punster, aren't you Sans?”
As you turned to look at him, you thought you saw a hint of a blue blush coloring his cheekbones, but he turned to examine the books flanking you. He reached for one and pulled it from its home.
“ well lady, you know what they say, ‘with great words comes, great re-pun-sibility’.” Sans spoke casually as he flipped through the book's pages. .
Once more you found yourself in stitches, nearly wheezing as you tried to catch your breath from your laughing fit. Tears gathered at the corner of your eyes and you wiped them away as you tried to get a hold of yourself. “O-Okay, I think that's enough jokes for this gal’.” You cough out, still trying to reign in your snickering.
“so you're not much of a rib-tickler then?” He put the book back in it's home, before grabbing another one.
“No, not here lately. “ You answered honestly. Scanning the shelves, you looked for a book you thought might peak the skeleton's interest. Finding its black spine with a colorful decal, you pulled it from the shelf. After skimming it briefly, you held it out for Sans. “You might like this, the author's tone and wording makes it a pretty good read, especially if you're crunching the basics for exams. “
When he took the book from you, your were expecting a snicker, or maybe question look of (really?). Sans did nothing of the sort. He gazed at the book, seeming interested and even took the time to read the first few paragraphs.
“Quantum Bullshit, sums it up pretty well.”
You fiddled with the end of your apron, you couldn't tell if he liked it or not. “If that's not what you're interested in, I can see if we have any more advanced books in the back. we have a surplus of textbooks-”
“nah this’ll do.” He answered, using the book to lightly tap it against his head. “ it'll be nice for a bit of light reading.”
Light reading? Well everyone does have their unique preferences.
“Okay then. Are you sure you want to go with that book? There are more options.”
“ sure am. besides, you made me an author i couldn't refuse.”
You shook your head at his joke, pressing your lips tightly together and purposely ignored him. “Well then if your ready, I can check you out at the front. “
“sure, you go ahead, pal. i'm just going to grab another book i had my eye socket on. “
“Alright.“ You left Sans to head back to the cashier's counter.
When you were back at your original post, you pulled out the inventory sheet from a clipboard you haad out. Yu had just finished marking out the book you had picked for sans when he arrived at the checkout area with not just one more, but several other books. Ranging from human and monster anatomy, a dummies’ guide for family conflicts, and two small gag joke books.
“I hope you found everything well today.” You spoke out of habit as you rang up his items and calculated the total.
“sorry, but i couldn't find an everything well. just a cool book store.” Your smile grew a notch wider. He was very smooth with his deliveries. After the items were purchased and you had wrapped and packed everything for the skeleton, you offered the bag to him.
“Huh, I was sure there was a well of knowledge somewhere in here.” You replied looking thoughtful while giving the skeleton a sly smile.
“ heh. nice one. “ He grabbed the bag of books from you, eyes darting down at the floor. “ i'm not the one to judge, but that's an odd place to keep your lunch. very flooring.”
Your eyes went wide, face breaking out in a scarlet blush as you remembered your ill-fated meal.
“My sandwich!”
You knelt down to pick up the ham and cheese sandwich, pouting as you mournfully tossed it into the trash. It deserved better than to have been ruined by the wooden floors of the shop.
“Sorry, I forgot I had dropped it. I'll see you-” Your voice trailed off, the shorter skeleton had already left just as quietly as he had come. “-later.”
Sighing, you slumping back down in your seat. Your gaze drifted down to stare at your sandwich in the bin below mourningful, your stomach crying out.
You should have made two sandwiches.
Notes:
An :: I was little impatient and just had to post chapter two.

These first couple of chapters will hopefully flow fast-ish. I don't want to rush the introductions, but I'm also eager for our journey to get to the real good stuff. The fluffiest of fluff. ◕‿↼
Any who, I hope chapter two was enjoyable and much better than our mc's lunch went.

Chapter Text
Sundays were your favorite days.
It used to be Saturdays, back when you had been in University. You'd go out with friends exploring the local area before partying the night away. That all changed when you decided to withdraw and chose to have a simple job in a quaint little bookstore in a just as quaint town.
Now it was early Sunday mornings, just as dawn was breaking.
Sitting out on your small balcony for your apartment, you gazed out to the east where the sun was starting to crust over Ebott Mountain. You had a mug of warm black milk tea. You sipped on it as you watched the peaceful sunrise of another day, still in your comfy oversized shirt and sweatpants from the night before.
Sipping on your morning brew, you listened to the soft calling of the birds, just enjoying the moment and what it had to offer as you wondered how you would spend the rest of your day off. You would need to at least go to the grocery store later, but otherwise you had no clue. Perhaps a walk around town would do you good, a stroll along the rocky coast, or a hike by the mountain.
You really liked the idea of going for a hike near Mount Ebott, but since monsters emerged from an opening in said mountain, it was declared off limits unless one had special permission, or was a monster. A frown tugged at your lips as you looked out at the snow capped mountain longingly. Climbing the mountain and getting to see its secrets up close was on your bucket list. It was partially why you settled on coming to Ebott.
It stung a bit when you first learned you wouldn't be able to explore the beautiful area as much as you would have liked. Life, however, wasn't fair or kind. You knew that first hand, but that didn't mean you still couldn't find it beautiful or enjoy it.
That's why you are here now.
Setting your now empty mug down on your outdoor table, you stood from your cozy seat stretching.
“Time to get moving!” You yawned out ignoring how your muscles seemed to protest. You should enjoy your day while it is young, and not daydreaming. There would be time later to dream.
You went about tidying up the single bedroom apartment you’ve been renting for the last six months. Iit was pretty minimalistic. You only had the necessities and you had attempted to decorate it to your taste, until you gave up when winter kicked in. The cold always zapped you of your energy and motivation. Maybe that's what you could do today…
After cleaning, you finally dressed for the day. You pulled on a pair of comfortable black leggings and one of your favorite sweaters. You completed the ensemble by tugging on your brown ankle boots, putting on a light coat of lip gloss, and combing through your hair.
Grabbing your purse from its home on a hook by your door along with your keys, you locked up your home and headed to your car, eager to get your much needed grocery shopping done so you could properly enjoy your day off.
The drive to the grocery store was uneventful as always. Your old and reliable black sedan got you there in one piece in the light traffic of the early morning. Regrettably that's where the simplicity of your mundane trip ended.
For a Sunday morning, the store was packed and finding a parking spot that was close to a shopping cart return and not a half mile walk to the store, was challenging. You manage to grab one as a mini-van pulled out and smoothly glide your car into the newly vacant spot before a shining black sports car could steal it from you.
You felt accomplished as you exited your own car and ventured into the store.Wll, that was until you lost a battle inside with a shopping cart you tried to pull froitthe return, promptly falling on your ass in the process. It would be your luck that the cart you so happened to grab had been stuck to the other carts by the safety strap for the child seat.
Trying to recover your dignity, you stood up quickly and freed the cart, this time without falling victim to gravity.
Shopping never took long for you. You were the type to get what you need and get out. Only when you are out leisurely, do you take the time to browse the shelves. Grocery shopping wasn't a fun outing. It was a chore.
You're strolling with your cart through the dairy aisle and heading for the milk, when you spot a familiar sight. It was Sans! At least the monster looked like Sans to you.
Slowing your pace, you eyed the skeleton as you came to a stop in front of the yogurt section. You tried to be discreet as you watched the skeleton, unable to tame your curiosity while he seemed to ponder the milk selection. You wanted to greet him, but he seemed a little preoccupied…staring moodily at the milk selection.
You tried to seem busy looking over the different brands of yogurt, though you didn't really need stuff. What you really wanted was a carton of milk- but the skeleton seemed a little different than yesterday.
A little more….edgy?
Glancing out the corner of your eyes, you noticed more differences. For starters, his lazy smile was no longer in place and was set in a deep scowl. His teeth were pointed and there was a glint of gold at the corner of his mouth as he grumbled to himself- Oh.
This wasn't Papyrus’ brother, well, the brother you knew. He did say he had multiple in a couple passing statements…you think.
He seemed more bulky than Sans. The coat he wore was a thick fur lined parka, a red turtleneck sweater tucked underneath it. He had black basketball shorts and red Converse sneakers that were untied. A gold chain dangled from his neck, old and worn, yet it still shined in the supermarket's white lights.
While his fashion statement was different that the jokester you had met yesterday, it was his mainly his eyes that clued you into knowing this wasn't the same monster as the one you met yesterday. He had brilliant red lights in his eye sockets that were narrowed in obvious frustration, before the cut to the side and the two of you momentarily locked eyes.
“ what cha’ gawkin’ at, lady? never seen a’ monsta’ before?!” Holy cow, that voice was deep and gruff. The kind of voice that would make you swoon if he voiced in one of the animes you enjoyed watching.
“N-No, I have!” You quickly answered, smiling in reassurance.
“then what's so fuckin’ interestin’?! do ya’ just like starin’ at people for no reason?!”
“Well, actually you kinda looked like a friend's brother.I thought you were him at first, but then I realized you were pretty- pretty different that is!” You fumbled with your words before looking away, suddenly finding the yogurt in front of you much more interesting.
This monster was definitely a prickly person. You hadn't meant to be rude or upset him, you just found it interesting how much he had looked like Sans-
“ whose brotha’?”
Something about that accent, the grovel in his tone, made you shiver. You thought you heard him say something low again in that grovel, it made heat blossom along the high points of your face.
“Pa-ah!” You had bee trying to answer the man, when your sweater was grapped and you were forced to look at the monster.
Crimson eyelights bore into your own wide eyes. Your heart started to race, your hands sweating as you tried to fight off the trembling plaguing your body. You leaned back, hoping to get space between you and this new skeleton monster.
“ i asked ya’ a’ question!” The skeleton practically yelled at you.
You tried to answer him, but your voice failed you.
“ are ya’ gonna answer tha’ damn question, or not?!” He yelled at you again, it echoed
“Pa-Papyrus! His name is Papyrus!” You blurted out, laying a hand on the one grabbing your sweater. “You look like his brother, Sans.”
You tried to pull yourself free. Other shoppers were starting to stop and watch the two of you. “Could you please let me go? There's a lot of people looking-"
The clearly-not-Sans monster looked you up and down a few times, his eye sockets narrowing as he did so, before letting you go and shoving his hands in his pockets.
“ i ain't nothin’ like that lazy ass.” He finally huffed out, turning his focus back towards the milk. “now beat it, lady.”
Wait, did he somehow know Papyrus and his brother? You shook your head. That hardly mattered to you. You were eager to end this interaction and move one with your day.
“I-I can see that. It was an honest mistake, you only look alike from a distance. I hope your day goes better for you. ” You replied, while fixing your wrinkled sweater before grabbing a hold of your cart.
You were about to leave and forfeit your much needed milk, when a shadow towered over you from behind. The hair on the back of your neck bristled. Why did you suddenly feel like you were in danger-?
Turning to face the source of the odd shadow behind you, you immediately go stiff as a rod when you look up at the towering monster behind you.
He's glowering down at you, a snide grimace in place. It almost felt like you were a bug under his rather impressive red leather boots and he was about to squash you.
Just as the other skeleton reminded you of Sans, the tall menacing monster before you had some similarities to Papyrus. You watched a black gloved hand reach out above you and you ducked out of the way and abandoned your shopping cart, not wanting to be hoisted up by your shirt for a second time.
Luckily, you hadn't been his target.
No, that was reserved for the edgy Sans look alike, as the taller grungy skeleton yanked the shorter monster up from the ground by his own sweater, until he was eye level with Papyrus’ look alike.
“I SEND YOU ON A SIMPLE TASK OF PICKING UP MILK AND YET I FIND YOU HARASSING SOME INSIGNIFICANT HUMAN WENCH AND CAUSING TROUBLE!”
You took cautious steps back. Insignificant? That was a little rude to call a stranger.
“CAN I NOT TAKE YOU ANYWHERE WITHOUT YOU CREATING A DAMN SCENE, BROTHER?!”
“s-sorry boss.” the shorter skeleton stuttered out with a weak smile. Was that sweat starting to drip down his skull. How… odd. “it was just a’ little misunderstandin’. tha’ little lady thought i was comic. ain't that right lady?”
He glanced at you looking desperate for you to answer… like he hadn't been threatening you in the middle of the dairy aisle just for staring at him.
“W-What?!” You blinked at the shorter monster, taken aback by his sudden docility and almost pleading voice.
“WELL HUMAN, IS IT TRUE? OR IS THIS IMBECILE LYING?”
Why was this happening to you!? You fidgeted with the bottom of your sweater, looking down to avoid the gaze of both the skeletons. You could feel your own sweat starting to bead on the back of your neck. Did you really have to answer them?
You glanced up and found them intensely staring at you. Their pointed teeth and claws seeming sharper than you had
Yes. Yes you did have to answer.
“ Kinda?” you finally muttered out after trying to not be pressured by the awkward pleading gaze of the skeleton in red and the almost murderous leer of the taller one. “ I mean, I did initially think he was someone else, but then he was a little rude about it.”
A little was an understatement. The monster was hell of a lot ruder than a normal sane being.
The skeleton in red gave you a look you could only describe as, “are you fucking serious?!”, while the taller skeleton turned his fierce eyes back on his shortre counterpart.
“ n-now boss, it was just a’ misunderstand-"
“I THOUGHT I MADE MYSELF CLEAR, YOU NUMBSKULL! WE ARE TO BE CORDIAL WITH THESE VERMIN UNTIL THINGS HAVE SETTLED. NO MATTER HOW PRUDENT THEY ARE! DO YOU WANT TO BE ON HOUSE ARREST AGAIN?”
“no, boss.” The shorter one grumbled, looking down at his feet dangling freely as he was held up by his supposed boss.
“Why don't we settle down a bit? “ You suggested, glancing at the growing onlookers in the dairy aisle. “This isn't something that warrants yelling or anything such as house arrest. We just got off on the wrong foot, right sir?”
You gave a weak smile, hoping that the taller screaming monster would heed your suggestion.
Maybe it had been your darting looks to the different groups of onlookers, but the more menacing monster took notice of the growing bystanders and dropped the shorter skeleton. He fell on his ass- well, the one he was lacking with a gruff “umph!”.
“SIGH-” Did he actually just say the word sigh? “ THE HUMAN HAS MADE A VALID POINT. I WILL LET OFF THIS TIME WITH A WARNING RED.” He bent down surprisingly low for his tall stature, making stern eye contact with ‘Red’. “ BUT DON'T YOU DARE DO IT AGAIN.”
Omph. That voice was a promise in itself for a bad time. Yet, the bright smile the shorter monster now had, was a little different than you were expecting; even if he was sweating profusely.
“you got it, boss!”
“NOW QUIT LOAFING AROUND. WE STILL HAVE WORK TO DO.” The taller monster scooped the shorter one, and grabbed two cartons of 2% milk before he carried them both from the aisle without so much as looking back at you.
You were left isolated in the dairy aisle with the bystanders whispers and stares. You hated it. An uncomfortable pressure lingered in your upper back as you grabbed your own carton of preferred milk, before finishing grabbing your necessities and high-tailing it to the check out.
Maybe the paranoia was getting to you, but as your groceries were rung up, it felt like the cashier was taking longer than normal. Fumbling with items and having to look up items’ barcodes. You tried not to seem impatient, but when it finally came time to pay for the good, you realized why it had taken longer than normal.
The worker had been stalling.
As you paid and started to leave, the store manager met you at the door with an officer. A sickening feeling turned in your stomach. You just wanted to go home.
The officer, awkwardly, was also a skeleton monster. Just your luck!
“Good Morning Miss, I hope you don't mind, but we would like to talk with you about something that happened earlier in the store!” The officer was polite and cheerful, his energy rivaling Papyrus’ on a good day. But…
Why do all the skeletons you're meeting look the same? Was it just a coincidence? Or was your mind playing tricks on you? The officer looked like Sans if he got several good nights of sleep and drank an energy drink. His eye lights were a bright blue and seemed soft. The uniform he wore was tailored nicely to him, despite being made of bones, it was filled out nicely, not hanging loose like most of the skeleton monsters you've met.
You swallowed, battling against the lump forming in your throat. “Yes, sir.”
“Oh Hun, You aren't in any trouble. I wanted to make sure you were okay!” The manager of the store spoke with a bit of a country twang. The purple bunny monster patted your shoulder gently. “I saw ole’ Red gave you a tough time on the cameras. I called it in, in case there was more harm done than what I observed. “
“If any harm has come to you, I will personally oversee this case for you.” The officer spoke confidently.
Ah, so that was it. They thought you might have had been hurt during the whole situation. A sigh left you involentarily, a ghost of a smile aparing on your lips.
Shaking your head, you relaxed a little. “No, No. That's not needed. I just thought Mr.Red was someone I've met recently. It was an honest misunderstanding that went a little too far. No harm, no foul.”
“Well, since I'm out here, I still have to file a report.” The officer looked a little disheartened by the idea, before he quickly cheered up. “ I'll need your name and contact information for the report. It's just in case you change your mind about pressing charges. “
“Um…okay.” You gave the officer your name and contact information. Once he had it, you were free to go.
“If you need anything, or have any questions, just call down to the station and ask for Officer Blue!” He had the tip of his thumb pressed against his chest. A wide smile and his eyes- the lights that formed them in his dark eye sockets, had turned into bright blue stars with a yellow accent to them.
The way he looked, settled the nervousness you initially had upon his approach. It was replaced by a wonderful familiar warmth. Like how you felt as a kid looking up to your favorite superhero.
His smile was just as contagious as Papyrus’ and you found yourself smiling back genuinely, even a little laugh bubled its way up and slipped out unintentionally. “I will, Officer Blue.”
There was a lovely tint of blue to his cheek bones as you parted ways with the two with polite goodbyes and casual waves. You exited the store as the third skeleton you had met that day, followed the manager to the store's main office.
Thankfully, you had no further incident as you loaded your groceries into your car and drove home.
You hoped the rest of your day off would be uneventful and peaceful.
Notes:
I just want to say thank you so so much for the kind words left on this story. It really makes my day when I read them, along with seeing the kudos, bookmarks, subs, and hits.
It's brief, but I hope I did the fell brother's justice.I try to keep the characters true to their personalities the best I can, with a heck of a lot of research.
When I think of Red, I don't think of this flirty grump that some fics pertray him. I genuinely think he's a little more abrassive and brash. Kill or be killed, so I take that he would have a difficult time intergrating into a normal society with ettique and rules about ya know...not threatening or assulting anyone. Of course we'll get to see his flirting later... no spoilers here. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
As for Edge, the bro's cool. Like when I think of Edge and how he acts, he reminds me alot of Megamind. Like, "look at me, im such a bad boy" and maybe that he found a Linkin Park CD with a Hot Topic flyer in the dump and thought that it was high tier coolnest. I think he's not as cruel as some people make him be, but needs a major lesson in how to properly communicate, and partially how he was raised... again no spoilers.
Any how, we'll get to see the brothers again with the full cast very soon. If I didn't already have plans and had this part of the story written, I would just skip to the fun, but...world building...sigh.
Thank you again for taking time out of your day to read this. It means a lot to this author. (ಥ﹏ಥ) /♡

Chapter Text
Not wanting your eventful grocery trip to ruin the rest of your day, you quickly unloaded your groceries upon returning home, before heading back out into Ebott. You had a goal of decorating your home and making it feel a little more “homey” rather than a bland box. And all things be damned, you were going to get it done.
One of the things you have learned to like, even love, about Ebott was how thrifty the monster community had made the town. Instead of wasting unwanted items there were ample places to donate along with thrift stores for your hand me downs to find new love. It made finding unique pieces of art and home decor easier to find.
You spent the remainder of your afternoon popping in and out of the local thrifting stores, combing through their collection. While it wasn’t the most thrilling thing to be doing on your day off, it helped ease your nerves and give you a sense of normalcy.
Even if you couldn’t help checking over your shoulder at the slightest movement in your peripheral vision.
The run in with… the edgy skeletons from the grocery store had left you watching your surroundings more carefully. Even though you knew rationally, the likely hood of the monsters coming after you for some sort of payback, was nearly non-existent. Every passing of black and red had you turning your head, just to be sure.
It definitely dampened your Sunday, but you were still determined to enjoy your time.
And you did.
It was nearing four in the afternoon, when you decided to call it a day. Having acquired a good collection. You checked out of your final store to head home for the day.
WIIIII-OUUUUUUU !!!!!!!!
Sirens screeched out, demanding to be acknowledged, calling for a quick response from the locals, the moment you stepped outside from the thrift store.
The sound made you grimace and speed walk to your car, hoping to escape the piercing sound as Ebbot’s fire station spurred into action and down the street The blaring siren was one of the few downsides of Ebbot. The town still had a fire station all-call, even though the town’s fire department ws full-paid staff and no longer volunteer based since the monsters had surfaced.
By the time you reached your car and store away your items, the long tone crying out was fading and being replaced by the wails of the fire engines pulling into traffic and demanding the right of way for traffic.
Grunting, you closed your trunk as the sirens whirled past you. Peeking over your shoulder, you watched as the neon yellow fire engines and rescue squad cars of Ebbot zoomed through traffic towards the east… the same direction that you had to go to head home.
“Ah man,” You felt a frown tug at the corners of your mouth as you slumped into the driver seat of your car.
It wasn’t often that the fire department of the town was called out and you hoped everything was okay, but now you were going to have to deal with the traffic.
Growing up in the city taught you one thing when it came to driving in heavy traffic, normal traffic was easy to navigate compared to when the flow gets interrupted by emergency vehicles or construction work.
You started your car and eased from your parking spot into the flow of traffic.
Just as you had dreaded, the drive home felt like eternity. Traffic was slow in Ebbot, but it was at sloth’s speed when emergency vehicles overtook the road and forced all the drivers to pull to the road’s shoulder and stop. Not to mention the occasional driver that would just stop in the middle and watch the pretty lights speed by, impeding the flow of travel even more so. You had to actually focus on the road and other drivers, traffic was so horrendous.
It made you ignorant to the plume of growing smoke as you drove closer to your home.
Making the left turn onto the street your home was located on, you came face to face with nearly all of Ebbot’s fire department and rescue squad apparatuses and a haze coating the street.
Immediately, your heart started pounding, palms sweating as you eased your car to a stop.
“What is going on?” You spoke your uneasy thoughts aloud to yourself as your eyes scanned the hectic scene before you.
Flashing lights blocked the entrance to your apartment complex. A crowd of people were huddled by one of the trucks behind caution tape that had been placed up. First responders were pulling bulk hoses from an engine towards a blazing fire, towards your building-
Tears prickle in your eyes, and not from the smoke starting to drift towards the road.
“No, no no, no-” You chanted out your denial, and hurriedly found a parking spot on the street out of the way.
The moment you had the car in park, you were vaulting out of the vehicle, running towards the fire line and the crowd.
Was it your unit? Had you left a candle burning? Or your kettle on the stove? You hadn’t been away from your home for long…
You picked up bits and pieces of conversation from the crowd as you navigated around your neighbors and onlookers that also watched the unfolding chaos.
“It was the ground floor, I think. A kitchen fire in unit A that got out of hand-”
“I thought I smelt something sweet then it was like this burnt popcorn smell and BAM! The sprinklers were going off! It was like a splash pad in my bedroom!”
“There was so much smoke. I’m so glad Miss Gladdis was able to get out with help. Inhaling that stuff causes cancer, you know?”
As the first responders moved about, you got a better view and could see the apartment below your own had been the culprit. Not your actual home. Your home would be safe, if not a little damp.
“Oh, thank God.”
The tension left your body like a receding wave, and tears fell freely from your face. The strength in your legs was nearly gone, causing you to wobble and force yourself to kneel on the ground.
Your eyes were glued to the scene of the apartment below yours, streams of pressurized water being sprayed into the apartment to knock down the flames that threatened your own home.Smoke billowing out from the busted windows and trickling from behind the building's outer panelling. The fire department was quick and thorough in their jobs. Protecting as much as they could from the flames wraith.
You stayed on the ground for what had to be hours. An occasional stranger would pause and ask if you were okay, to which you would nod your head and continue to watch the ongoing efforts to save the building. The bright blue of the sky had faded into vibrant oranges and purples of the evening, when you were finally allowed to go up to your home.
You had been hopeful the damages weren’t too bad. You hadn’t gotten your renter’s insurance quote yet.
That small inkling of hope shattered as you took your first step on the staircase ascending to your home.
The stairs to your apartment were unstable. Creaking unfamiliarly and forcing you to use the railing out of caution as you and your neighbors were escorted up to your home by the rescue crews. Your front door was forced open, along with your neighbors and black webbing coated the breezeway from the smoke.
Nothing could have prepared you for the damp darkness that awaited you.
Water dripped slowly from the sprinkler heads on your ceiling. The paint on your walls was already pulling away from the sheetrock. The floor was soaked, sagging in spots as you toed in further. There were no lights, the power having been long cut off for safety. Everything was sopping wet. Your couch was ruined. Your bed had turned into a massive sponge.Nothing had been spared from the onslaught of water.
There was a smokey and musty smell that clung to the moist air that threatened to make you gag and tear up even more while you numbly picked through your belongings, trying to find anything salvageable. Your kitchenware seemed to make it out okay, but most of the food you had was ruined. All of your personal books had turned into a congealed sloop. You could probably just wash your clothes and they would be okay. Thankfully, your medication supply and toiletries were spared from the sprinkler’s onslaught. Protected by your bathroom’s lack of fire protection.
You had to take several steadying breaths as you navigated your messy apartment.
It…It could have been worse.
At least your home would be livable after everything dried out…even if it would take days. You’ll have to ask the leasing office to repaint. You definitely are going to need a new mattress and couch... and go grocery shopping again.
At least on the brightside you might get to repaint your home a color of your choice.
You were sorting through the mush that had been your favorite books in your living room, hoping to find something salvageable, when a gentle tap on your door frame rang out.
“Miss?”
“Oh, yes?” You quickly turned to face the newcomer, a firefighter, and nearly slipped on the slick floors. You caught yourself using the edge of your soaked couch before you could fall with a nervous laugh.
“Sorry, I’m still a little uneasy from all of …” You trailed off and simply gestured to your surroundings.
“I understand, but miss, you’ll need to leave. We will be condemning the area until the building’s structural integrity can be determined.” The rescuer stepped forward to help you stand steadier on the wet ground, as you dumbfoundedly looked at him.
“Leave? Why? Everything should be okay once I get things dried out”
It was just a bit of water damage. Sure the lower apartment was scorched, but you just needed to dry everything out and your home should be fine. Right?
“The damage here is minimal compared to what it will be in a few days as the water seeps in more. There will be life hazardous mold and the flooring will be weaker in the coming days and possibly cave in. The complex’s manager will be contacting you later about your residence, but for now we need you to vacate.”
Fuck. Mold. Right.
You weren’t thinking clearly.
You rubbed at your temples, before just settling to bury your face into your palms and let out a muted wail.
What do you do now? You had no family close by, no close friends. You could shack up at a hotel until you find a solution, but you would quickly blow through what little savings you had built up. Maybe you could camp out at the store, just until things settled and you could come back home.
Yeah, that’ll be a good plan for now. The store room’s bathroom has an old shower in it from when the store used to have a studio apartment and you already ate simple meals since you were a hopeless cook.
“I know this is a lot, miss. But it’s getting late and it’ll be dangerous in the dark.” A gentle hand rested on your shoulder, snapping you from your whirling thoughts.
Lifting your tear soaked face, you nodded and pulled away from the stranger’s comfort. You did your best to stifle your tears, rubbing your eyes and nose with the back of your arm. “I’ll…I’ll get going. Just let me grab a few things first.”
You didn’t wait for his response as you went about collecting the few things you could and would need most. An arm full of soaked clothing and a plastic bag of your toiletries and medications later, you forced yourself to leave your home behind without looking back.
“There is a relief shelter-” You marched ahead, cradling your soggy belongings as the first responder’s words fell on deaf ears.
A crowded shelter? Thanks, but no thanks. The bookstore’s store room seemed all the more appealing with an offer of privacy. At least there you could be away from prying eyes and be a bit more comfortable for the next few days. You trudged onward towards your car, ignoring the chill from the damp clothes you carried in the cool evening.
You’ll get through this, you always do.
“Huh….Mhmm…. So six weeks then?”
Your body was stiff.Your back aching as you balanced your cell phone against your ear with your shoulder as you were on your knees and restocked the shelves of the bookstore.
Yesterday….while it wasn’t the worst day of your life, was at least in fucking second place.
After having your home saved from a fire, but then getting losing it temporarily due to water damage, you had spent a good chunk of the evening at the laundromat washing what clothes you had until they no longer smelt like smoke and swamp water. Then you went back to a department store to grab enough bedding and a new pillow to create a makeshift futon for the storage room of the bookstore. You were up most of the night cleaning and reorganizing a section of the storage room in the far back for your temporary stay.
And when you did finally get to lay down, you began battling against the intrusive thoughts in your head, keeping you from sleeping even a wink.
Saying you were exhausted was an understatement.
You did your best to fight off your grouchiness, trying to seem pleasant while stuck on the phone with your leasing office, stocking the bookstore and helping the stray customer that had wandered in.
“Okay, well that’s good I guess. So no payment , and in ten weeks after the repairs are done, you’ll let me know when I can move back in if I haven’t found another apartment.”
The office manager continued to ramble on the other end of the phone, and you simply hummed in acknowledgement as you finished adding the new stock to the manga collections and moved on to the adult romcom fiction books.
“Sounds great-”
DING! DING!
The bell you place at the register rang out and you let out a soft sigh, dropping the book you had picked up from your stocking container, back in the plastic bin. Standing from your knelt position on the floor, you dusted off your pants before heading to the register.
You mute your side of the phone conversation, laying the device on the counter as you greeted a little old lady with a false smile and rang up her purchases. You waved as she left the store with a pleased smile.
A yawn escaped from you just as the woman turned her back. Groaning, you rested your head against the cool counter, only to hear the muffle sound of your name being called out from your phone. Letting out a soft curse, you fumbled picking up your phone and unmuting it.
You couldn’t even rest for a few seconds.
“Yes! Sorry I was with a customer. That’ll be fine. I’ll look forward to your next call. Mhmm…..Mhmm..Okay, have a good day-” Click.
“Ughhhhhhhhhhh.” You flopped over the counter, face fully pressed against the surface.
Pressure was starting to nag behind your eyes and at your temples. You wanted nothing more than to lay down in your own bed and sleep this nightmare of a week away.
Ten weeks.
That’s how long your leasing office was estimating you’ll be out of a home…that is if everything went according to plan and their schedule. That meant you’d be spending all of spring and the start of summer in the store. …The peak tourist season…a hotel would be out of the question indefinitely.
Hopefully, the seabreeze kept the heat at bay since the storage room didn’t have ac like the store front. Another groan tore from your chest as you thought about the uncomfortable nights ahead of you.
Just fantastic.
“OH WOWIE, SO HUMANS CAN GET THE MONDAYS TOO!”
An all too familiar chuckle filled your store. While you enjoyed Papyrus’ company, today you just simply weren’t feeling up to be infected by his energy and charms. You just wanted to shut out the world-
“I don’t know, Papyrus. I think this human seems to be suffering a bit more than the Mondays.” Now that was an unexpected voice.
“Hey Papyrus” Pushing up from the counter, you mustered up a smile for your bony friend. “Sorry, I had a rough day- Officer Blue is that you?”
You glanced from Papyrus to his companion next him.
Blue’s grin grew bright as his wandering eyes flickered to you. “Oh hey! You’re the lady from the grocery store!”
You rubbed at the stiffness in the back of your neck. You’re going to definitely have to get an air mattress soon.
“Y-Yeah. Again, sorry about that. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble.”
“No worries, that was nothing compared to what Red and Edge have done in the past. They even made Milord and Mutt seem tame.”
Edge? That must have been the other two skeletons from yesterday. But who are Milord and Mutt?
Before you could ask Blue, Papyrus voice spoke your name excitedly, drawing your attention away from Bule, to the taller monster. “ I SEE YOU’VE ALREADY MET BLUE! THAT’S AMAZING. BUT YOU ADDRESSED HIM BY HIS JOB TITLE... DID SOMETHING HAPPEN? ARE YOU OKAY?”
“I’m good Paps!” You stood a little straighter and smiled a little bright to emphasise the point. “I met Officer Blue-”
“Please, just call me Blue! A friend of Papyrus is a friend of mine!”
“Okay, Blue then,” You felt a little more at ease, your smile more natural. “ When I was shopping yesterday, I mistook another monster for your brother and he... wasn’t very happy about that and the store manager was worried he had done something to me, so they called the police department and that’s how I met Blue.”
“MISTOOK FOR MY BROTHER- OH!” Papyrus clapped his hands together. “IS THAT WHY RED’S ON HOUSE ARREST FOR A MONTH? DID HE HAVE ANOTHER OUTBURST IN PUBLIC?”
Blue nodded his head, his smile disappearing briefly as he crossed his arms and tried to look…stern? “He Needs to learn to control his temper in public and practice some manners. I knew Sans wouldn’t put his foot down and with Milord on his trip, as the Third eldest, I punished Red as how I saw fit.”
Papyrus made a humming noise. “FAIR POINT.”
That was news. “You guys are related?”
“Yep! Well, Half siblings actually.” Blue answered your question.
“BUT WE ARE FAMILY NONETHELESS! AND MY LOVING BROTHERS.” Papyrus bent down low and wrapped his arms around Blue and lifted the shorter skeleton as he hugged him lovingly. Blue bumped his skull against the side of his younger brother’s and laughed. It sounded nearly identical to Papyrus’ own laugh.
“So how many siblings do you guys have?” You asked, pulling out cleaning wipes to wipe down where you had your face pressed against the counter and created a smear.
“THERE’S TWELVE OF US!” Papyrus happily announced as he set Blue back down on the ground.
“And I’m the third eldest and Papyrus here-!” Blue affectionately nudged the taller monster,”Is our third youngest!”
“AND US THIRDS STICK TOGETHER!”
“Like glue!” Blue added and the two struck a pose that mirrored one another, resembling something straight out of Sailor Moon.
You snickered at the two skeletons as you worked. “Well, I’m glad you two are close to one another. It’s nice to have someone you can rely on.”
And something you missed having and regretted running from.
Your smile fell briefly as you finished wiping down your work surface. You were quick to replace it as you tossed the wipe in the garbage bin and waved away your more darker thoughts.
“What do you two have planned for the day?” You quickly asked, needing the conversation to move on to less sensitive topics.
“WE’RE DOING OUR TRAINING MARATHON TODAY! WE’LL BE TESTING OUR LIMITS AND IMPROVING OUR WEAKNESSES!” Papyrus flexed his non-existent muscles, while Blue mimicked similar poses, but with his legs.
“We have to be our best in order to provide the best for our community!”
“OH! AND I WANTED TO BRING YOU THIS!” Papyrus pulled out his phone and with a few swipes, a neatly packed lunch appeared in his free hand. “I BROUGHT YOUR MANICOTTI! PREPARED BY YOURS TRULY!”
“Papyrus…” You cooed out his name, heat flooding your cheeks as you took the offered food from the gentle monster. “ You didn’t have to do that.”
“OH, BUT I WANTED TO! PERHAPS THIS PASTA OF FRIENDSHIP CAN HEAL YOUR ACHING SOUL.”
Shit. Did you really seem that bad? You quickly averted your eyes from meeting the skeleton’s gaze in favor of stashing the pasta safely and out of sight from customers’ view under the counter. “Thank, I’m sure it will. Good food always warms the heart and stomach.”
“YOU KNOW, IF SOMETHING IS TROUBLING YOU, YOU CAN ALWAYS TALK WITH ME. I HAVE A TINY HUMAN FRIEND WHO SAYS “ TALKING ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS WITH FRIENDS IS THE STRONGEST SHOW OF FRIENDSHIP!” SO I’M HERE TO LEND AN EAR IF YOU NEED IT. THOUGH…SKELETONS DON’T HAVE EARS.”
“And you can come to me as well! Confidentiality ensured by officer's honor! Of course if you don’t want to talk, then we can just try and get your mind off of your troubles for the time being.” Blue added with a smile so sincere, it made your stomach do a tiny flip.
You chewed your lip.
Will it be okay to open up some?
Your moistening eyes flickered between the two gentle souls before you.
“Thanks, Papyrus. Blue.” Your voice cracked as you blinked and tried to keep your composure the best you could. You rubbed your eyes with the sleeve of your shirt.
“I-”
Brrrrrrrrrring!-Brrrrrrrrrrrrrring! Brrrrrrrrrrrr-
Well so much for opening up to a friend. Perhaps it was divine intervention.
Papyrus looked for his phone, patting his pockets, before he realized he was still holding it in his gloved hand. Orange dusted his cheekbones and the taller skeleton cleared his non-existent throat, making you giggle as he answered the phone.
“NYEH-EHM. THIS IS I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS SPEAKING!- OH UNDYNE! …YES YES BLUE AND I ARE FINE! WE WERE JUST SPEAKING WITH A FRIEND- OH THERE’S NO NEED!”
Papyrus, for the first time since you met the skeleton, looked panicked. You glanced at Blue and whispered, “Is everything okay?”
“I’m sure everything is fine. We’re supposed to meet with Undyne and her twin for our marathon. She’s just a bit overprotective of Papyrus.” The shorter of the duo nodded his head confidently, not bothering to lower his own boisterous tone.
Papyrus turned his back to the two of you and ventured closer towards the door of the store to continue his phone conversation as he spoke animatedly into the phone. “YES! BLUE AND I ARE EXCITED FOR OUR TRAINING FESTIVITIES”
Blue shot a quick glance at Papyrus, before he did the unexpected.
The shorter skeleton braced his hands on your freshly cleaned counter, and heaved himself up, twisting to sit on the countertop and leaned in close to you.
Warmth erupted on your cheeks and instinctively, you leaned back as he invaded your personnel space. Cyan eyelights with the faint hint of gold, obscure your vision of your friend. Forcing you to focus only on Blue.
“Um..” Your voice wavered, as you tried to move further away from Blue, only to be stopped by bumping into the wooden stool you normally sat on during your slow days. “Can I ….help…you?”
Oh God, your voice cracking like some teenager!
“Would you like an ear now?” Blue asked, his voice at a relatively normal volume.
“An Ear?”
“Yeah! Like Papyrus offered. I can lend you an ear,” He held his right hand to the side of his head while turning his head to the side and leaned closer to you. “I told you if you need to talk, I'll keep it all a secret. We both meant it.”
You felt the heat in your face grow hotter as you briefly locked eyes with Blue again.
“Thanks,” You looked down at your shoes, scuffing the soles of your old sneakers against the wooden floors of the shop. You smiled, but it no longer matched your tired eyes. “I do appreciate it, but it seems like I’ve held you guys up too long as it is.”
You glanced again at Papyrus, who had his back to you, but was standing more proudly with his free hand on his hip. The sight made your smile more natural as you turned your attention back to Blue. “ Can I take a rain check?”
“For sure!” Blue answered damn near instantly. He let himself slip from his perch on the counter. He turned to face you chest puffing out, shoulders back- almost like he was mimicking a knight from a fairytale. “I’ll visit you again this week, then you can confide in me like true friends.” His smile widened as he winked at you.
“I’d like that. If you ever need an ear, I'll lend you one too.” You couldn’t help but wink back at Blue, tugging at your left earlobe to emphasize your words.
“WE’LL BE THERE IN LESS THAN 20 MINUTES UNDYNE! BYE!” Papyrus’ voice echoed louder as he ended his call.
When the taller skeleton turned to face you and Blue again, he seemed even more animated than usual. He practically ran back to the counter.
Papyrus didn’t stop there, no the taller skeleton stayed moving, jogging in place as his normal bright smile turned apologetic.
“I’M SORRY, DEAR FRIEND, BUT BLUE AND I MUST GET GOING. UNDYNE HAS THE MOST WONDERFUL CONDITIONING PLAN FOR US AND WE MUSTN’T KEEP HER WAITING. I WILL BE SURE TO STOP BY ON MY MORNING RUN TOMORROW EARLY SO WE CAN CHAT MORE. BUT IF YOU’RE NOT OKAY WE CAN-”
“It’s okay, Paps! I will be okay. It’s just been an eventful start to the week.” You quickly cut the gentle giant off. “Both of you go and enjoy your workout. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“You can come join us down at the north shore! We’d be happy to have you!” Blue quickly interjected.
“AMAZING IDEA BLUE! WE’D LOVE TO HAVE YOU COME ENJOY THIS BEAUTIFUL WEATHER WITH US!”
“As much as I would love to spend the day outside with you, I have to keep watch over the store.” You tightened the apron you wore while working, as if to prove your point..
Blue practically whined, his bright smile fading into a childish pout. Papyrus remained optimistic however, “THEN PERHAPS ON ONE OF YOUR DAYS OFF WE CAN ENJOY A FRIENDLY JOG AROUND TOWN.”
A light laugh escaped from you as you left your post behind the cash register to escort the duo towards the shop’s main door. “I’d like that!”
“THEN IT’S A DATE! NYEH HEH HEH! ”
“Make it a double one! Myeh heh heh!” Blue echoed Papyrus, chuckling.
A what? Did you hear the two of them correctly?
A vibrant blush coated your entire face even making the tips of your ears burn. With a unison call of your name, the two offered their goodbyes and took off in a sprint down the boardwalk. It was hearing their friendly banter and joyful laughter fading, that finally shook you from your stupor.
Hurrying out the door behind them you attempted to catch up, your own run much slower than the two monsters. You didn’t make it far as the toe of your sneaker found a loose plank and nearly tripped you. Luckily, you were able to keep yourself from falling, latching onto a railing on the boardwalk to keep you from face planting.
Huffing, the cool spring air felt like it burnt the inside of your chest. Still, you yelled out at their fading silhouettes, ignoring the strange looks sent your way from bystanders.
“I-It’s not a date!!!”

I am so sorry for the delayed for an update! Work and college classes kinda had me K.O. until recently.
I truly am so happy for all the kind words left and to see others enjoying this story. It make writing it so much more fun. Thank you to each and every reader. I love you all so much. ; u;
So, technically this was 4 and 5 smushed together, but I thought OG 4 was too short and so I merged the two. hence the little line break. I wanted to flush out the reader a bit in this chapter without taking too much liberty. I wrote this to be a reader insert, hence why there's no name mentions, looks, and too much background detail, other than being from a female perspective.
The goal for Blue and Papyrus is to stays as close as I can to their personalities, while not making them overly obnoxious, or overly childish. I am making Blue have a little more maturity and some more depth to try and given him and Papyrus personality distinction. There's a couple tweeks for pap too, but that's for later! So hopefully They're not too OC.
One more chapter to go and then we get some quality time with most of the boys. :D
Next chapter should be soon-ish, I'm nearly done with making some changes and proof reading it.
Again, thank you loves. Your support means so much to me. I hope you continue to enjoy this little story of ours. <3
Chapter 5: Day V

Chapter Text
Staying at the bookstore was starting to become an actual pain.
The persistent pain in your back, shoulders, and even stiffness in your joints had made the week agonising. The occasional headache didn’t do you any favors either. You were grateful for two things though; the physical demand of the store was luckily on the low end this week, and long lasting Advil. It made it easier to push through the days and ignore the aches until you could lay down and rest.
It also helped when Blue or Papyrus stopped by. It keeps you from focusing on the woes caused by your unideal sleeping arrangement.
Papyrus has visited every morning for the past four days. You’d open the shop and step outside to take care of the blooming flowers outside the store front, and the lanky monster would be trotting up the boardwalk, a smile brighter than the sun itself. Each day he visited, he would bring a new pasta dish with him and you would return the container from the previous dish, thanking him for the thoughtful meal. He would then stay, making small talk and helping you with a few of the chores around the shop. Even though you protested at first, he’d proceed to continue helping you work until it was time for him to leave.
Blue’s visits were unpredictable. One day he had accompanied Papyrus again, but the majority of his visits were while he was on duty. He’d often tell you,” Oh, I was in the area!” or “I’m on break so I wanted to come see you!” He was always stuck by your side, or propped up on the counter of the cash register while talking about anything. If you tried lifting or carrying anything heavier than a book, Blue was quick to step in against your will to carry the items for you.
You’ve quickly grown fond of their visits and even have been anticipating when it would be time for their arrival by the time Friday had come.
But things were different on Friday.
When you woke up to your alarm screeching, your sheets clung to your body. The room was hot and sticky, and it took longer than normal for you to muster up the strength and stand up from your makeshift bed. You stumbled into the bookstore’s bathroom to wash up, but it didn’t help.
As you locked eyes with your reflection in the old mirror, your foggy mind already knew the answer why by the way your cheeks were flushed and dark circles settled in under your eyes.
You were having another one of those days.
Thankfully, it wasn’t bad yet. You could still think clearly, move about, and you weren’t dizzy.
Sure, you felt like shit, but that was becoming your normal status quo. The good days were slowly becoming fewer and longer apart. That’s why you came here. To have a simple life and not an as stressful job. So you could still have a normal life.
Getting ready took a little bit longer than normal, but once you were dressed for the day and had downed your medications, you were ready to tackle the day.
Emerging from the back of the store, you noticed a small piece of paper had been taped to the door and a green lunch container sitting on the edge of the store’s flower beds.
After opening the door and propping it open to let the fresh spring breeze into the shop, you gently pulled the note from the door’s glass.
DEAREST FRIEND,
I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, AM LEAVING YOU THIS NOTE. I ARRIVED AT OUR NORMAL RENDEZVOUS TIME, BUT YOU HAD NOT ARRIVED! YOU MUST HAVE BEEN SLEEPING IN AND BEING A LAZY BONES! THAT IS OKAY! MY OLDER BROTHER SANS QUITE OFTEN DOES THE SAME. I COULD NOT ASSIST IN WAKING YOU UP TODAY, FOR I DO NOT KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE, BUT I SHALL LEAVE YOU MY NUMBER ( PPP-PSP-PSPSP.) AND THIS DELICIOUS FRIENDSHIP SPAGHETTI FOR YOU TO ENJOY. I WILL AWAIT YOUR CALL___________________________________
The last ‘L’ had turned into a mess line, running off the paper, onto the glass of the door, before ending. On the ground was an uncapped sharpie.
Odd.
You found yourself frowning. Hopefully Papyrus was okay and he simply took off in a hurry to meet with UNdyne and nothing bad had happened to the skeleton monster.
Pulling your own phone from your pocket, You dialed the number on Papyrus’ note.
It rang.
And rang.
And rang.
And rang-oh, someone picked up!
“Hey Paps! I got your note-”
Heavy panting came from the other end of the phone line.
“Papyrus?”
There was gingling, the panting was getting harder. In the background you hear your friend’s voice yelling.
“ STOP YOU MEDDLING CANINE!!”
The panting got louder and faster, before the phone call cut off.
You pulled your phone away from your ear, staring at the device.
“Well that was Weird.” You snorted, before saving Papyrus’ number and pocketing the device. Grabbing Papyrus’ note and the spaghetti container, you head inside to official start or day.
…
The day had dragged on longer than you were mentally prepared for.
Your exhaustion got worse throughout the day. A familiar headache drummed behind your temples, a woozy unsteadiness accompanying it. You found yourself, resting behind the counter on your stool. Even napping when it was slow. The sun made the shop uncomfortably warm, even with the seabreeze drifting in to offer relief. It had tempted you to finally turn the AC on.
The worst part…Blue hadn’t shown up either.
The sun was setting, and you hadn’t caught sight of your law enforcing friend at all. There was only an hour left before it would be time to close for the day, the energetic monster normally would have poked his skull in to say hello.
You couldn’t help but sulk as you watched the front door of the shop, head laid on your folded arms, waiting for your friend to come sprinting in with the brightest smile. Or maybe even Papyrus popping in to see you on his way home.
It was odd, before this week you hadn’t minded if Papyrus had stopped by or not and you didn’t even know Blue; but here you were feeling like a forgotten puppy, waiting on its own to come home from work.
And all because you hadn’t seen either of the skeletons today.
Maybe you had missed companionship more than you thought. Maybe the solitude was starting to eat away at you. Maybe you should have stayed home and not come to Ebott. Maybe you should have looked for a third opinion when it was suggested.
You snorted and closed your eyes as a scornful smile snaked its way onto your lips.
Not like any of that would change the outcome.
You released a heavy breath from your nose and tried to block out the negative thought bubbling up in your head. You focused on the sound of the distant waves, the light chiming of the windchime attached to a post just outside the bookstore.
It was peaceful, relaxing. Your tired body couldn’t resist the lull of rest as you settled into the little piece of serenity.
And you were enjoying every moment of it until something poked at your cheek.
Your eyebrows scrunched together and you buried your face against the crook of your arm. The action repeated a couple more times, causing you to groan and finally lift your head.
A skeleton was standing in front of you. A pretty familiar tall and lanky skeleton.
Your vision was blurry, but you were pretty positive you knew this monster. Smiling, you rubbed your eyes and offered a sleepy wave.
“Oh, hey- “ Your voice died as your vision cleared and the person you thought to be Papyrus, was clearly not your skeleton friend, but someone completely different.
Your smile faded as you quickly processed the sight before you.
The skeleton before you was actively smoking in your store. He wore an expression of lax annoyance, his hands stuffed in the front pocket of the worn muted orange sweat shirt he wore. He was hunched, making him shorter than your friend. The bookstore was bright, but the boardwalk was dark, the sun having long set.
You watched in wonder as the Skeleton spoke and his cigarette continued to hover by his mouth, not falling as he spoke, though his words fell on your deaf ears. .
You continued to stare at the monster. Your groggy brain was unable to process what he said.
“Ya’ know, this isn’t good business practice, lady. I know my bones are cool and all, but are you going to actually check me out, or continue checking me out ?” His voice was scratch, his tone had an unfriendly edge about it, jolting you to awareness.
Finally, your mind pulled itself out of its haze. Shaking your head, you offered him an apologetic smile. “I am deeply sorry sir. I’ll total up your purchases right now.”
You looked down at the counter, finding it empty, then back to the skeleton, who was sans books.” Um, where are the items that you wanted to buy?”
“Don’t have anything yet.” He answered.
“But you said you were ready to be checked out. Aren’t you ready to pay?”
“Nope.” He popped the ‘P’ and with it a ring of smoke left his jaw.
You grimace and waved the smoke ring away from your face as it neared. You felt your temple throb as you mutter low under your breath, “He can’t be serious.”
You pulled your stiff shoulders back, ignoring their protest of pain as you stood your ground with the monster. “ Sir,” you nearly growled the word out. “There is a strict no smoking policy in this store-”
“It’s not tobacco, and it’s scentless. It’s for my health, doc’s words, lady.”
You locked your jaw, smile long gone, as you practically glared at the monster before you. Talk about a jerk. Even though you hadn’t been the most polite person, you at least have been trying to be nice.
Unlike this asshole.
But you could handle this.
Your hands grasped on to the edge of the counter top as you slipped off the stool. You ignored the sweat beading on the back of your neck, or the unsteady feeling in your legs as you stood tall.
“If you need it for your health, you can finish smoking outside. Regardless of the product producing the smoke, it can damage our stock. And I would prefer ashes not falling and ruining the pages of our books.”
“Hmm.” He seemed to watch you for a moment, before his shoulders visibly relaxed and a smirk twisted on to his skull.
He didn’t say anything more, simply just staring at you with his dumb little smirk. Cigarette at the edge of his teeth, as if taunting you.
You didn’t have the energy for this bullshit.
“Look, if you aren’t going to get anything or adhere to your rules and just stand there, then you can leave. It’s close to closing time and I need to lock up for the night. So if I can help you, speak now or get out.”
You point towards the door. “The exit is over there.”
“Yeah, I think I'll be fine without your help.” He seemed to slouch forward a bit more. I only stopped by because my brother seemed down since he didn't get to visit this place today. So I figured I’d see what’s so great about this place. ”
You softened a bit at his statement. “You’re one of Blue and Paps’ brothers?”
“Uh huh. “ He answered. “ And you are?”
“They’re good buddies.” You respond with a hint of a smile that fades just as quick.
“If you are their brother, do you know if Blue is okay? He normally stops by and he didn’t today…” You trailed off looking out at the dark streetfront of your shop.
“My brother’s fine. He just got held up at work. Had some arson cases they’ve been working on.“
“That’s good. I was beginning to worry-.” The words died in your throat.
The hairs on your arms and the back of your neck prickled. Cold filled your veins and the exhaustion you’ve been battling felt like it multiple tenfold.
Something was up with this guy.
You felt as if you were staring at death personified.
“Blue’s pretty magnificent, isn’t he?”
His tone hadn’t changed. It was still flat and apathetic. The monster hadn’t moved either, but his eye sockets were narrowed. It was a little detail, but one you noticed. It set off alarms in your head, you were practically screaming at you to put distance between you and the monster.
“Y-Yeah.” You had to clear your throat. Your mouth was uncomfortably dry. “He’s a good person. Paps too, They’re both great.”
“They mean a lot to us. To me. Actually kinda surprised Sans hasn’t made a trip out here himself. He’s more overprotective than me.” He snorted, and you didn’t comment on what the monster said.
He acted like Sans was worse than him, but Sans had been nothing but a pun loving dork. He didn’t send shivers down your spine or poke rudely at you.
The Skeleton leaned back, somehow able to keep himself upright as if there was an invisible wall behind him. “ So treat my brothers good, okay lady?”
“They’re my friends, of course I will.” You started sternly and balled up your fists to try and hide your trembling hands. “Now if you don’t mind. I need to close up the shop.”
You gestured towards the door.
“Sure sure, lady.” He blew out another puff of smoke as he started lazily towards the door.
You followed him slowly. Trailing after the monster and making sure he left, even watching him disappear down the boardwalk, before pulling the door shut and latching the lock in place.
Finally alone, you closed your eyes and rested your forehead against the cool glass.
“What an asshole.”
You’ll have to ask Papyrus or Blue to keep their rude brother away from you. Seriously, what was his problem? It wasn’t like you were some serial killer or gang member. He didn’t have to be so cold or foreboding.
Your body still trembled as you sighed and let your sore muscle finally relax.
You turned on your heel-
And was met by said ‘asshole’s’ face nearly pressed against yours.
You screamed.
Stumbling, you fell back against the glass door, bracing your body as you tried to get away from the monster. All your strength had vanished, your breath was quick and shallow.
“Are you some kind of psycho-!”
Your yelling was cut off as the monster lifted a hand and jabbed at your chest.
“ You better not harm them. Got it? Or else I’ll be treating you to a good time , lady.”
Your teeth were chattering as you nodded your head, unable to speak.
“Well, I best get going now. You’ve got a shop to close up. “ The skeleton leaned away from you with a coy smirk. “Be sure not to be snoozing on the job again, It’s not good business practice.”
‘Blip!’
The monster was gone.
You blinked, staring out into the empty bookstore.
The store was silent, not a soul in it other than your own. The skeleton was gone, vanished into the air.
There was no way. He was just here. He couldn’t be gone. He couldn’t!
You pushed away from the door, stumbling forward as your legs tried to figure out how to carry you and not be limp noodles. Your world was spinning as you fought through waves of nausea. Still you looked in each corner, every possible hiding spot.
He had to still be somewhere, Had to .
There was no way someone could just blink out of existence.
You had to grab onto the shelves of the bookcases to keep yourself up right as you kept searching. You neared the back of the store and the air around you seemed to grow hotter, almost scolding. Each breath you took was a quick gasp, and the store seemed to grow dimmer.
Your hands and legs were cramping, refusing to carry on with your demanding search. Ringing plagued your ears. Everything was starting to close in-
Oh !
Your knees gave out and your body collapsed to the floor.
You barely register the sharp sting of pain on the right side of face as the store dove into pitch black.
Calmness washed over your terrified mind as you became numb to your surroundings, offering a brief moment of clarity.
That creep was a monster.
It must have been some sort of magic trick .
Notes:
Author's Note: I am absolutely blown away by the support this story has gotten! Thank You all so much! (✿〇∀〇)
The kudos and bookmarks have practically doubled since I posted chapter four. I wish I could give each one of this story's supporters a hug, instead I'll keep pumping out these chapters. ᕙ(`▿´)ᕗ
I apologize if Stretch is a bit OOC, out of ALL the Sanses and Papyri, he's the one I struggle with the most, second to og sans. I'm more of an optimist, so the apathy/pessimistic views I struggle with. I do feel pretty confident on how i had his actions down. And I might be a sucker for Stretch/reader enemies to lover trops. (*´∀`*)
Anyways, Chapter six will be out in roughly a week or two, scouts honor. It's written, other than some minor changes, it'll be good to go.
Thank you all for your support and kindness. It makes me so happy that this story is also being enjoyed as much as I enjoy writing it.
Happy early Easter! (✿ŎヮŎ)

Chapter Text
“Owwwwwww.
A groan of pain escaped from you as soon as you mind registered the pain stinging your right cheek and your head throbbing. You rolled on to your back and slung an arm over your face to block out the overhead light.
Five more minutes. You just wanted to lay dead to the world for five more minutes, before your headache became a splitting migraine.
Muffled voices hummed low in your ears as your mind crawled closer to alertness, more than you wanted. You tried to figure out if the voices were important, or simply background noise from you leaving your TV on. They were too muted for you to make out words.
You decided to ignore them in favor of lulling back asleep.
THUD! …Smack! Smack! Smack! Smack!
“Ugh, that really hurt. I really need to start practicing my landings better.”
The cruel world had other plans for you.
You listened intently to the much clearer noise. Was it really the tv? Or your computer? Did you fall asleep watching some murder documentary on Netflix again?
As if to answer your internal question, you were suddenly vividly aware you were laying on hard flooring. Awareness smacked you full throttle, as if someone had finally flicked up the on switch to your brain. The memories of last night swarming you and rushing to the forefront of your mind.
Damn it.
Had it been your panic attack? Or maybe the budding fever you had been ignoring that finally caught up to you?
Regardless, you ended up taking a dirt nap for the night on the wooden floors of the bookstore.
You stay still, not moving as soreness seeps into your muscle, your headache is more intense now, and the stinging in your cheek morphed into a dull throb.
Yup. Ten out of ten, do not recommend passing out on hardwood flooring for some unholy amount of time. You definitely weren’t going to be up for opening the shop today. It was probably way past opening anyway-
Ding- BANG!
Your name was called out frantically as the shop door was slammed open.
“IT IS I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, YOUR FRIEND! ARE YOU HERE?! “
“The Magnificent Blue is here too! If you’re here can you call out to us?!”
Your name was called out over and over by Papyrus and another voice you quickly recognized as Blue’s. You could hear the two shuffling through the store, searching for you.
Crap.
You lifted your arm staring up at the very bright ceiling of the book store. Guess you had to get up now.
You had just pushed yourself into a seated position, leaning up against the back wall of the store when a panicked unison shouting of your name sounded out.
You winced at the volume your friends had cried out, a curse falling aloud from your lips while you shook your head.
There was a thud coming from both sides of your body. Bony hands were helping you sit up further, offering you support as your friends panicked.
“WHY ARE YOU ON THE GROUND? DID YOU FALL? WERE YOU NAPPING? I HEARD IT WAS NOT GOOD IF A HUMAN WAS SLEEPING ON THE GROUND.”
“Did you faint? You look pale! Are you hurt? Or ill? Do you need healing?!”
Blue grabbed you by the shoulders, forcing you to look at him. Your unfocused mind was still reeling, when you were confronted with tears overflowing from his sockets and enlarged wavering eyelights boring into your very soul.
“Are you DYING!?”
“What?” Your voice groggily answered, your confusion clear on your face and in your voice.
Before Blue could repeat himself, Papyrus was immediately scooping the two of you up. His own face was a teary mess, some kind of orange goo was starting to drip from his nose, a kin to snot.
“NO! YOU CAN’T FALL DOWN HUMAN! WE HAVE YET TO DO MOST OF THE FRIENDSHIP TASKS!” He squeezes you tightly, crushing you against Blue.
The smaller skeleton clung to you, even nuzzling his skull into the back of your shoulder. “We got you! We’ll save you! Don’t worry now!”
“ Guys…Guys!” You snapped at the two monsters trying to squirm free. “I’m okay. Everything is fine!”
Papyrus’ grip relaxed some, but it was just enough for him to properly look at you. The taller skeleton refused to let you go.
“ARE YOU SURE? YOU HAVEN’T BEEN YOURSELF FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS AND THE LAST TWO YOU HAVEN’T BEEN AT YOUR MEETING TIMES. TODAY YOU WEREN’T ANSWERING THE DOOR SO BLUE AND I WERE WORRIED! IF YOU ARE FINE, THEN HAVE I OFFENDED YOU IN SOME WAY?”
“No, Paps, You haven’t done anything wrong. Neither of you have.” You quickly corrected the monster, reaching out to pat his skull. “I’ve just been exhausted is all. I’ve been having to crash in the back of the store and it’s not the best for a good night’s sleep.”
“Why are you staying here?” Blue’s muffled voice asked from where he had buried his head against the back of your shoulder.
“DO YOU NOT HAVE A GOOD HOME TO GO TO AT NIGHT?” Papyrus asked, concern practically dripping from his voice.
“Yes I do- well…” You mulled over your words, relaxing back into Blue’s hold. “ I’m staying here temporarily until my apartment is fixed. See there was this fire-”
“FIRE?!” They both seemed to shout out at the same time causing you to wince again.
“It was your home that burnt down?!” Blue was frantic. He pulled away from you and Papyrus and stood up. The stout skeleton dug his palms into his temples and began pacing. “Oh I know I should have overseen that investigation instead of letting Whimsum handle it!”
“Hey-” You reached you, catching the hem of the basketball shorts he wore. “It’s fine. My apartment didn’t burn just my neighbor’s. Our building had to be evacuated due to the smoke and water damage. It’ll be fine after the reno. It’s just bad luck.”
“But it’s my duty to serve and protect, and you weren't protected.” Blue looked down at you, cheek bones flushed, eyes brimming with tears.
It made your heart throb painfully. You hated seeing such a pitiful expression when he normally was so bright. A sniffle had you looking over your shoulder. You found Papyrus with tears and orange snot ruining his sunny disposition.
“Y-YOU WERE STRUGGLING AND WE DIDN'T HELP.”
Oh. You couldn’t bear this.
“ Come here you two.” You tugged at Blue’s shorts, until he rejoined you and Papyrus on the ground. Wrapping an arm around their necks, you pulled the two boys into a side hug with a smile.
“This is something that no one had control of. So no need to be upset.” You bumped your head against Blue’s skull first, and then Papyrus’. “ I’ll be fine sleeping in the back room for a few more weeks. I’m okay. I just dozed off here.”
You omitted some of the truth. You doubt any good would come from telling them the truth behind your little dozing session.
“IS THIS WHAT HAS BEEN BOTHERING YOU?” Papyrus asked, his voice much softer than you’ve heard before.
There was hesitation before you nodded. “Yeah, mostly.”
“THEN… HOW ABOUT COMING TO STAY WITH US UNTIL YOUR HOME IS FIXED?”
Stay with Papyrus, Blue, Sans, and their other brothers? Your smile faded as you thought over the offer, unsure if you should accept it or not. Given that at least two of their other brothers clearly didn’t have the best opinion of you.
“I don’t know Papyrus-”
“That’s a splendid idea, Pappy!” Blue chimed in, cutting you off. He bolted up, his bright smile back. “ We have some spare rooms since Green and G moved out. It’ll be like an extra long sleepover!”
His statement caught you off guard. “I couldn't impose on you like that-”
“You wouldn't be imposing!” Blue cut you off. “We're offering!”
“HE'S RIGHT!!!” Papyrus jumped up from the ground, leaving you sitting alone. “ WE WANT TO HELP YOU! OF COURSE, WE'LL NEED TO RUN IT BY THE OTHERS, BUT IT SHOULD BE FINE! IT'S ONLY UNTIL YOU'RE HOME IS BACK TO LIVABLE CONDITIONS, SO I'M SURE THE MAJORITY OF OUR BROTHERS WILL BE OKAY WITH IT.”
“The guest room is already cleaned and ready for her! It just needs new covers!”
“WE CAN GO SHOPPING TODAY FOR NEW BEDDING THAT'LL BE PERFECT FOR HER!” Papyrus clapped his hands together.
“And new pillows-!”
“Guys, that's not necessary! You don't have to do anything like that for me. I’m honestly fine staying here-”
“OF COURSE IT IS!” Both of the skeletons practically shouted in unison. They each grabbed one of your hands, and pulled you to your feet.
You stumbled forward into the two skeletons, having to be steadied by the much more energetic monsters.
“A MEMBER OF THE GUARD WILL ALWAYS HELP A FRIEND IN NEED.”
“How could we let you sleep on the cold floor for weeks when we have a surplus of warm beds?”
Maybe you were delusional from fever, but as you locked your gaze with the two skeletons before you, you couldn’t help but picture a superhero pair. The sunlight made their white bones radiant, Blue’s wide stance, proud. Papyrus’ red scarf billowing behind him in the slight draft.
Wait, draft?
You looked past the bright smiles of your friends, to the door of the shop- where it was propped wide open.
How? You were positive you had locked it. You even double checked it after that guy’s little trick. So how did Blue and Papyrus open it?
“Thanks, but um…” You rubbed the side of your face, trying to ease your dull headache as you glanced towards the open door of the shop. “How did the two of you enter the shop? I’m pretty sure I had locked the door last night.”
Papyrus and Blue shared a brief glance with one another, before the taller of the two spoke up. “ DON’T BE ALARMED, BUT OUR FAMILY HAS UNIQUE MAGICAL TRAITS AND WE CAN USE OUR MAGIC TO TRAVEL TO DIFFERENT PLACES. SO BLUE USED HIS MAGIC TO ENTER YOU STORE AND OPEN YOUR DOOR FOR ME.”
“I only did so because we thought something was wrong!” Blue quickly added with a nervous laugh. “I’m not the greatest at teleporting, our other brothers are actually much better at it, but I can get into places nearby in a pinch.”
“Ah.” You pressed your lips together, biting your tongue. They could teleport. So you weren’t going crazy last night… Honestly, it did make you feel any better.
“You’re not upset.. Are you?”
“Oh not at all,” You answered Blue truthfully. “It’s just a little bit to process…and really makes me think about how I'll need to improve security measures.I wouldn’t like to have any unexpected customers while I’m not here.” You would definitely going to be adding motion sensored cameras when you had the chance to
“OH DON’T WORRY DEAR FRIEND! WE CAN ONLY GO TO PLACES WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH! OR IF IT’S WITHIN OUR LINE OF SIGHT! AND-!” Papyrus leaned down to whisper in your ear, though, it wasn’t really a whisper. “WE’RE THE ONLY MONSTERS THAT WE KNOW OF THAT HAS THIS ABILITY. IT’S OUR SKELETON’S KEY! NYEH HEH!”
You couldn’t help but snicker at Papyrus’ play on words. Blue grabbed ahold of your right hand in both of his, his eyelights had enlarged to cartoonish shaped stars as he gazed intensely at you.
“Will you accept our offer now?”
Shit.
You blinked owlishly at first before turning your head trying to not to stare at Blue’s sparkling eyes. “Honestly, I’m fine-”
“PLEASE?” You peeked at Papyrus as he grabbed your other hand, and regretted it when you saw his own version of ‘puppy eyes’, though a bit more disturbing than cute.
“I WILL BE VERY WORRIED ABOUT YOU EACH DAY UNTIL YOU’RE ABLE TO HAVE YOUR OWN ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD.”
“It’s okay I have a security system-” You tried to counter the two.
“Pretty Please?”
“WITH CHERRIES AND GLITTER ON TOP?”
“We have the room and it’ll be free of charge!”
“YOU’LL JUST HAVE TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF AND HELP WITH GROCERIES FOR YOURSELF.”
“It’ll be fun, much better than sleeping on the floor!”
“IT’LL BE LIKE ONE GIANT STAY OVER!”
You groaned low, face flushing as you fought, and failed to not be swayed by their kindness and pleading eyes.
“Okay. I’ll stay with you guys, but only if I can contribute more than just my own groceries. “ You caved, grumbling in defeat. “ I don’t want your brothers thinking that I’m some kind of moocher.”
“WHOOPIE!”
“Yes!”
The duo cheered, high fiving each other and releasing your trapped hands.
“LET US GATHER YOUR THINGS AND SET OF TOWARDS OUR HOME, DEAREST FRIEND! NYEH-HEH!” Papyrus was already practically running towards the storage area of the shop.
“Wait Papys-” You took off after him, having a hard time keeping up with the excited skeleton. “I can pack up myself. You don’t have too!”
Blue was hot on your heels, laughing happily as he strolled past you with his hands tuck behind his head and giving you a playful wink. “Embarrassed, we'll see your secrets, hmm?!”
“N-No!” Your face was a bright red as you stomped forward. The toe to your shoe managed to catch the threshold as Blue snicker as he helped keep you from face planting.
You muttered out a thanks, still trying to calm the blush plaguing your face.
“You’re very welcome, miss!” Blue laughed out as he pushed ahead into the back room of the bookstore.
You stood in the doorway, watching the two skeletons happily set about in collecting the few personal belongings you had.
This hadn’t been the plan. You had just wanted to live quietly and peacefully, yet you somehow had managed to make two amazing friends without really meaning to. A smile graced your lips. Perhaps it was for the better, just for comfort in knowing you would have someone to turn to for help now, even if you were reluctant.
Your eyes flickered to the tiny bathroom and you pushed away from the door frame, setting about to collect your more private belongings.
You just hoped it wouldn’t hurt in the end.
Notes:
AN :: I had a bit of writer's block to wrap up this chapter. I saw it going in several directions and ultimately, this was the better option. Sorry for the delay, I was went down a very deep rabbit hole of hyperfixation and work then decided to slam me with a crap ton of case reports to review. :D
Thank you for the support and kind reviews left!
In the next chapter we get to meet most of the skeleton household and see some familiar faces!
