Work Text:

Misuzu feels his entire weight jolt him awake from his dreams. He lies there, staring at the ceiling, trying his hardest not to breathe too loudly for fear his father might hear. Yet again, his dreams had taken him back to that familiar blonde boy he used to be friends with in middle school—the one who was always cheery and somehow made even the worst days a little better. Now, the memory was stained, replaying like a broken record: the boy unconscious on the cold, unforgiving concrete floor.

His thoughts drift to someone else—to Kitahara.

In all honesty, he just doesn’t understand why Kitahara is so damn stubborn. Misuzu feels like he’s done everything, everything , to keep the other boy at arm’s length. He’s shouted at him, pushed him away, and even dragged his own reputation through the mud—lower than low, not that he ever cared about that.

And yet Kitahara stays.

It’s infuriating. No matter how… many times Misuzu screams at him, Kitahara remains unaffected, brushing off the harsh words like they’re nothing. Is there truly no way to deter him? Misuzu wonders if maybe—just maybe—there’s a way to shatter, that ridiculous belief Kitahara has in him, the one where he’s somehow a good person. What if Kitahara stopped believing that?

Could he… hurt someone? Just because?

The thought churns in his stomach, and the memory of the blonde boy surfaces again. His limp body. The cold floor. The guilt.

…No. That won’t work.

Misuzu doesn’t understand it—any of it. How did Kitahara get so attached in the first place? Misuzu is a bad person. He hurts people, and he gets hurt in return. It’s a cycle. It’s who he is. So why? Why does Kitahara believe, so wholeheartedly, that he’s anything but that?

Why does Kitahara believe in him at all?
