Notes:

Hello everyone and welcome to a new fic!
This time, not a ship-fic tho hehe

This was a request by someone in a Discord server I have, and it’s a really interesting concept that inevitably became a 6-chapters idea lol

Anyways, I’m breaking my own rule of not posting on January (I had already made an exception, well, this is a second exception), and will be updating this weekly!

Now, please, enjoy! :D

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1

Alright, so, this is chapter one.

I wrote it in a rush of inspiration and have already edited it about 5 times lol

Chapter Text

She felt a bit dizzy.

As if just waking up.

She felt… strange.

Wrong.

But she also felt better!

That familiar and very disgusting physical weakness was gone

What was going on?

—So? Light Spinner? What was it?

That was… Norwyn!?

What on Etheria was going on!?

—Excuse me?— she stammered, slowly taking in her surroundings.

—What did you want to show us? The Horde destroying everything? We know of this already. So what is your innovative plan?

—My plan… Right— she sighed. Words came naturally to her, and so she spoke —The Spell of Obtainment. A way to make ourselves strong enough to stop The Horde.

—What you propose is forbidden for a reason, Light Spinner— Norwyn severely interrupted, shaking his head. —It summons a parasite that turns the caster into a magical leech!

—I know, but I made modifications to it, and…

—Forget it, Light Spinner. We can’t allow it.

—Because it will fail…— she uttered, remembering what had happened.

But how!?

How is she here if all of this has already happened!?

—Then… why were you proposing this if you know it will fail?— the Head Sorcerer finally asked, after a moment of confusion.

—Because I believed it was ready… But it is not.

—Light Spinner, are you feeling alright?

—No— she admitted, clutching her head.

Her eyes opened wide while her fingers dug into her thick hair, her breathing became shallow and made her veil flutter in front of her mouth.

She was panicking in silence.

Norwyn immediately gestured at everyone to dismiss the meeting and leave, and carefully approached her.

He was wary and hesitant.

He was afraid.

—Perhaps you should rest.

—All of this is wrong.

—Many things are wrong, Light Spinner. But it is not in our power to solve everything— he replied, trying to comfort her.

—Don’t patronize me…

—I am not…— he sighed, defeated. —You’re an ambitious and talented sorceress. I can see you want to help our world, but your methods could use some thought… You need to think everything through before trying to test your plans.

—We don’t have time to think everything through!

—If you don’t take into account the possible collateral damage, the risks, then it will only make things worse. For everyone!

—You have no idea— she scoffed, almost sardonic. She then let go of her head, stood straight again, and looked back at him, asking —What if I told you that I did this once, and it ended with me corrupted and you dead?

Silence.

He looked shocked, but also… suspicious.

—Well, if that were true, then isn’t this some sort of second chance, maybe?— he jokingly commented.

—Second… chance? That must be the brightest thing you’ve said in a while…— she replied, not intending to be mean despite obviously offending him.

—Alright. In any case, you should rest for the day, Light Spinner.

—I certainly should…— she nodded, finally leaving the chamber.

More memories little by little returned to the woman.

For instance, she knew where Micah would intercept her on her way back from this meeting, so she chose a different route to her room, not wanting to face him now.

That kid…

Curse his energetic and enthusiastic personality!

She couldn’t do it again.

She couldn’t lose him again.

Risk him again.

Betray him again…

If this was a second chance, then she needed to do it right this time.

So she needed to think.

Once her ideas were clearer, she’d be able to face him.

It wasn’t until about a week later that the woman finally dared talk to Micah.

The kid was starting to feel rejected and very obviously refused to lose his Master, so he kept asking around for her, and telling other tutors to get her his messages.

No wonder he was beaming when she agreed to meet him at the Lunarium.

—Light Spinner! At long last! What happened!?

—Calm down, Micah. Nothing happened…

—But you didn't want to see me before…

—I just needed time to think.

—Then what happened with the Council!? You said you were going to speak to the Council to present them with your plan! It’s infallible!

—No, no. Micah, it’s very flawed, it won’t work— she denied. —Not yet…

—“Not yet”? But…

—Trust me, I know. The Council won’t lend me their strength to perform the spell, and…

—I can help you!

—No!— she immediately barked, suddenly angry, making him backtrack. —If you help me, you’ll get scared, you’ll break the connection, the spell will fail, I’ll- Ah… Never mind, it’s not going to happen— she blurted out, but interrupted herself before she said something she couldn’t explain, dismissing everything instead. —If you still want to help me, then let’s keep working on the spell. Only once it’s perfect, only once I say you’re ready, we’ll… try it.

—So… I can keep helping you? You’ll still teach me?— he asked, eyes shining.

—Of course— she nodded, sounding gentle in a way that was almost forgotten to her.

They continued to work on the spell for years.

Many years.

She obsessed over it and pulled Micah into the same obsession…

Well into his twenties, he knew nothing other than war and the improvement of the Spell.

In the last five years, The Horde’s advancement had been stalled and they felt slightly relieved, so Micah’s efforts were going less into fighting and more into studying and improving the Spell of Obtainment.

Whoever would ask, got the same answer: once this big project was completed, there would be no more bloodshed…

That was the big promise.

That was… the ultimate goal.

The one thing that had all of Light Spinner’s and Micah’s attention.

They were so invested, all their hopes set on this single target, that it seemed like nothing else mattered to either of them.

And finally… the day arrived.

—Everything ready?

—Yes.

—Are you sure?

—Of course, Master! Trust me!

—Every single thing must be perfect, you know that— Light Spinner severely remarked.

—Come on, Master, I’m almost thirty! You can trust me a bit!— he insisted, a bit cheeky. —I even have a kid now! I sure hope I'm trustworthy— he then joked.

—Alright— she nodded, ignoring the humor. —I’ll trust you, young man. Let us begin.

And that was the beginning of the end.

Again…

Light Spinner should have known.

Or perhaps she knew that, even with all the extra preparations, even with the numerous new improvements, even when Micah was much older, everything would go just like the last time… But she wanted to think- she hoped things would be different this time.

That she had made the right choices.

She… hadn’t.

The containment lasted a bit longer, but it still broke.

The parasite scared Micah just as much as the first time; a primitive fear was immediately installed in his heart to a degree that made him feel like half his age.

A kid again.

Completely out of sorts, he backtracked, deaf to Light Spinner’s screams telling him not to stop, and then he fell back on the ground, only able to watch in absolute horror as the black mass of hands from the parasite swallowed his Master.

—What is the meaning of this!?— an angry voice suddenly asked.

Just like the first time…

Norwyn had arrived at the Lunarium in time to witness the rebirth of Light Spinner as Shadow Weaver.

—I-I’m sorry— Micah stammered, his eyes trying to find her between the dark arms. After a moment, she groaned loudly and stood up as the parasite receded, but the corruption was evident. —Master! We-we have to help her!— he exclaimed, trying to rush to her yet firmly stopped by Norwyn. —What are you doing!?

—She’s beyond salvation, Micah.

—Why did you abandon me!?— she finally yelled, a hand covering most of her face, the other pointing accusatorily. —Why did you leave again!?

—“Again”?— Micah repeated, confused.

—Is this the part where I die?— Norwyn fearlessly inquired, recalling what Light Spinner had claimed so many years ago.

—It is!— she yelled, preparing a dark magic spell without uncovering her face.

With unexpected strength, Norwyn pushed Micah aside and cast a barrier, intercepting her shot but getting pushed away several meters.

—Wait! Master! Light Spinner!

—Light Spinner is dead!— the woman yelled. —I’ve lost you again, so run like you did before!— she insisted, deeply confusing him.

—But…

—Get back!— Norwyn warned, shooting a spell at Shadow Weaver. —I won’t let you hurt him or anyone!

—And you’ll pay with your life, Old Ram!

While Micah observed in absolute shock, they both clashed in the Lunarium, shooting spells back and forth, until their killing blows intercepted each other and caused a small explosion.

Dizzy, the woman backtracked, holding her head, eyes closed, until hitting the basin in the middle of the Lunarium.

Being so stunned, it took her a moment to realize something was wrong again.

She was… numb for a moment.

The rush of new power was gone, the oppressive air of her surroundings had cleared, her ears filled with noise now perceived only a comfortable silence, and her face, which she was still covering, felt… smooth again.

That was when she realized it.

With a gasp, she finally looked up, only to find herself back in that fateful meeting.

Let me begin by saying… this chapter had a better version…
I spent 6hrs at the beach writing this… only for all progress to get lost when I closed the writing program. Because ofc you can’t trust anything without internet connection to synchronize shit to the cloud…

Chapter Text

She was… numb for a moment.

The rush of new power was gone, the oppressive air of her surroundings had cleared, her ears filled with noise now perceived only a comfortable silence, and her face, which she was still covering, felt… smooth again.

That was when she realized it.

With a gasp, she finally looked up, only to find herself back in that fateful meeting.

—Light Spinner?

—What is going on?— she weakly asked.

—Are you… alright?

—No. This can’t be happening again!— she groaned, not intending it as an answer to him but rather just stating facts.

Ignoring the murmur of the Council around them, Norwyn remained pensive for a moment, now a bit concerned. He gave everyone a stern look to keep them quiet and approached the woman.

—If you’re not feeling well, Light Spinner, maybe we should call off the meeting and let you rest.

—No amount of rest can fix or explain what’s happening to me!— she exclaimed, enraged.

Everyone was speechless this time, but the Head Sorcerer decided to dismiss everyone with a gesture and handle the matter on his own.

Once everyone was gone, he approached and gently requested —Please, explain to me what’s happening.

—You will not believe me. No one would…

—I shall decide that. If you don’t speak, I can’t help you.

—Why would you want to help me?— she asked, scornful. But he didn’t reply, only gave her an insistent look and she let out a frustrated sigh. —In short, this is the third time I’m living this moment— she began. —The first time… was many years ago for me. I presented a plan to use a forbidden spell, and you obviously rejected it. However, I still performed it, got corrupted, and fought you. And killed you— she explained. —The second time, I didn’t perform it right away. I tried to improve it more first, but eventually tried again and failed once more. I was fighting you right now, our spells collided, there was an explosion, and suddenly I’m here again.

Shocked, Norwyn stared at her in silence.

—That’s… something.

She scoffed and shook her head.

—See? It sounds impossible.

—By all known means, yes. However, I doubt you just came up with this or that it was any sort of dream.

—It was no dream!

—I realize— he calmly nodded.

—So you believe me?

—Well, the subject of time-traveling isn’t well researched… I’d say it’s not impossible.

—Really?

—If you don’t mind… Why don’t you investigate this matter a bit and report back to me?

—I- Wait, why would you…

—I believe it may be useful, especially if it lets you be able to harness that power. But of course, you should probably rest now.

—But The Horde’s…

—The Horde will be there tomorrow— he interrupted. —And if what you said is true, then you have all the time in the world. Their advancement doesn’t matter as much if you can always… go back.

—I see…

—And the forbidden spell you mentioned, it’s the Spell of Obtainment, right?

—Yes.

—I can see why I would reject that plan. It’s too risky and turns the caster into a magical parasite.

—But I’m modifying it to make it safe! It might be our only chance to face The Horde on a level ground!

—Yet, according to your previous experiences, it is far from ready, isn’t it?

—Indeed— she had to admit. —I will investigate the time-traveling thing for you. However, I won’t stop trying to fix that spell— she finally decided, after being pensive for a moment.

—If you can prove it’s safe, then I’ll allow it.

—You… will?

—But only if you can guarantee no one will be harmed.

—I’ll make sure of it— she promised.

—Then it’s settled. Now go rest— Norwyn exhorted her.

As the sorceress left the Lunarium, she went over the conversation.

She couldn’t believe he had been so… understanding! Where had his intransigence gone!?

He was far from the grumpy old ram she remembered.

Was her view of him distorted, maybe?

Had she misjudged him?

No, no. She knew him for so many years, there was no way.

Ah… it didn’t matter.

Now she had to speak with Micah.

Should she tell him too about the time-travel?

No, no. It would confuse the poor teen…

He’d have too many questions she would not want to answer.

Well, in any case, she now had permission to work with the Spell!

She had to get to work as soon as possible, while she still remembered the years spent the previous time.

Fortunately, she remembered the modifications she and Micah had made… it should save them some time.

Right?

Unfortunately, it didn’t.

Years passed, and their progress dwindled more each day.

Once again, Micah was almost thirty, just had his daughter, and had been fighting The Horde on the battlefield for a while now.

But he always returned to Mystacor to work on the Spell of Obtainment with Light Spinner.

It was a bit frustrating for them both…

And the same happened with the investigation about time-travel. No matter how much she researched, she was no closer to answering any of her questions about the matter.

Hence, she considered it’d be better to take some more time to work on everything instead of attempting the Spell again already.

And so more years passed, Micah entered his forties, and his daughter was now a teen.

He and Light Spinner had exhausted all ideas to improve the spell, but by no standard was it what could be called “safe” yet…

—I believe a test of the Spell should be carried out next. There is nothing else we can fix, and without trying it, I don’t think I can find any new flaws.

—Our deal was to make it safe. It would be irresponsible of me to allow it otherwise— Norwyn replied.

—I’m telling you, either it’s as good as it can be, or has flaws we’ll only see with a test— she insisted. —Besides, I believe its failure triggers the time-traveling, even if I can’t explain why, so it would let me fix said new flaws next time.

—Right… Speaking of which, how is that other investigation coming along?

—Not well, unfortunately. At least I haven’t found anything useful— she replied, upset. —I have many theories and no way to test them. I’m no closer to solving the mystery of why or how it works, and much less why it’s affecting me.

—Then we can’t even rely on that if the Spell fails— he lamented, shaking his head. —Tell me something: why do you think it’s happening to you? Why are you being sent back?

—To fix my mistakes, I’m sure.

—Which would be…

—Too many to count— she scoffed, smirking a bit. —But it all began with the Spell of Obtainment failing and corrupting me. I lost Micah, made him hate me, I lost my home here, I joined The Horde seeking revenge, there I raised a pair of orphans with such utter spite that I’m certain that mistake takes the price… Oh, right, and I killed you— she enumerated.

—So that is why you focus so much on the Spell— he realized.

—Exactly.

—I see. It makes sense…— he nodded, pensive. —It’s quite admirable of you to be so self-conscious. And I must say I’m surprised you count killing me as a mistake. One would think you’d consider it an achievement!— he then joked, more jovial, making her laugh.

It took Light Spinner by surprise.

This was the first time she was laughing with that old ram.

It felt… nice.

—There might be some mistakes unrelated to the Spell that I can still fix— she commented, with a sad smile.

—I sure hope living all this time again is teaching you something— he told her. —This second, actually third chance must be an opportunity for you to make different choices and achieve the best possible future for yourself…

—I certainly hope so too— she sighed. —I wonder how many tries it will take.

—You don’t think this will be the last one?

—I highly doubt it— she chuckled.

—Alright— he eventually nodded, after a moment in silence. —I’ll let you attempt the Spell next time the Moons of Enchantment align.

—You will?

—With a condition: if you get corrupted again, I’ll do everything in my power to keep you from harming anyone.

—That’s fair— she accepted. —I don’t know if you’ll notice it if I travel back again, so it’d be better if you make sure to stop me. I… hope I remember this if that happens, of course— she sighed, unsure of why she was saying that.

It felt strange to behave like this, but it was clearly the mature decision to make.

She wanted to do things right this time.

The day finally arrived, and Micah joined the sorceress at the Lunarium for the ceremony.

He wasn’t as obsessed as the last time, fortunately, but he still didn’t hesitate to help her when she asked.

Besides, he was also curious about how it would work, and he knew his prowess could make all the difference.

He was also much older now, less likely to get scared and break the connection, so their hopes were high.

Unfortunately…

The casting started, everything began well as was usual, and then the parasite was summoned and began filling the containment. It lasted far longer than on previous attempts, Light Spinner wanted to believe it would hold…

But it started to leak and eventually shattered.

A second containment spell was triggered immediately, a backup she had added based on previous experience, and it gave them a bit longer.

They frantically worked on the seals, putting all their power into work…

But the arms of the parasite were too strong, and it wasn’t long before Light Spinner was surrounded.

She fought all she could, yet her panic didn’t help and she got overwhelmed soon enough.

Meanwhile, Micah retreated from the basin, his heart clutched by fear again.

It always happened. It was inevitable.

Even being such a seasoned warrior and sorcerer, this thing would always, without failure, turn him into a scared child.

They had failed.

She had failed, again…

—Run!— she exclaimed, right before the parasite pulled her into its insides.

It swallowed her for a moment before spitting a corrupted Shadow Weaver.

—No, no, no!— he stammered, still in shock.

—Micah! Get away from her!

Norwyn had just rushed into the Lunarium.

He was internally lamenting that this had happened but held it back.

Now he had to make a choice, much as it hurt him after how she had trusted him the past few years.

—Ugh…— Shadow Weaver groaned, holding her face with both hands. —So close!— she exclaimed, frustrated.

—Light Spinner— the Head Sorcerer called. —You know what this means. If you still remember, you will not harm a soul… and if you can, return. Tell me everything again, and use the knowledge you have to keep investigating until you succeed— he prompted her. —Make the right choice.

—I’ll try…— she accepted, uncovering her face, and giving him a strained look, as if she were fighting something inside her.

—What are you talking about!?— Micah asked, looking betrayed.

He had just realized they had been keeping something from him, and it broke his heart.

Shadow Weaver could see the exact moment it happened, and clutched her chest with a hand and her head with the other.

Dizziness again.

But now she knew what seemed to be triggering it.

Perhaps her most important mistake, or the one she wanted to fix the most, was losing Micah.

So the moment it happened again, she was taken back in time once more.

The dizziness made her sight go black, everything felt numb, but after a moment, her senses returned to normal.

And there she was again: presenting her plan to the Council at the Lunarium.

There she went again.

Chapter Text

The dizziness made her sight go black, everything felt numb, but after a moment, her senses returned to normal.

And there she was again: presenting her plan to the Council at the Lunarium.

There she went again…

It took her a moment to fully recover, during which the sorceress appeared to be in a trance to everyone around her, and she soon heard Norwyn calling —Light Spinner?

—Ugh… I know. I don’t look well— she groaned. —We should end this meeting. I changed my mind, I won’t present my plan yet, it’s not ready…

—What… exactly is happening to you?— the Head Sorcerer asked, after a moment of tense silence.

—A lot. We need to talk alone.

The Council began muttering among themselves but got cut short by Norwyn clearing his throat.

—Alright. The meeting is dismissed, you can all leave— he ordered. After waiting a moment for everyone else to be gone, he faced the sorceress. —Now: what exactly is going on?

—Time-travel, Old Ram. What do you know about it?

—Time- Uh, it’s… a poorly-researched subject— he replied, confused.

—But not impossible…

—Why would you be interested in the matter?

—In short: I’m being sent back in time, possibly to fix my mistakes, and last time I told you about it. So you asked me to tell you again, which I am doing.

—Hmm… I see— he uttered, deep in thought. —While I wonder why you would have trusted me with such information in the first place, I must admit I’m glad that was the case— he nodded. —Your situation is unique: an opportunity, a chance many would do anything to have…

—Except that I’m far from discovering anything relevant enough or that would allow me to have some degree of control over this time-traveling thing— she interrupted, upset.

—How many times have you been sent back?

—This is the third time.

—So you’ll be living this a fourth time… And, have you observed anything in particular that could potentially be the trigger of this phenomenon?

—The first time… I have no idea how it happened. It just did out of nowhere. I went to sleep one night, then woke up here, in the middle of this meeting— she began. —But the last two times… I believe what triggered it might be the Spell of Obtainment failing— she considered. Yet, as soon as she said that, realization hit. —No, wait; it was not the Spell failing, but rather a consequence of it. The last thing I saw this time was Micah’s expression of betrayal. As I said, I’m probably being sent back to fix my mistakes, all of which originate with the Spell’s failure. But the most important one for me is losing Micah. The moment I repeat that mistake may be what triggers it.

—So, let me get this straight: you performed the Spell of Obtainment, it failed, and you believe by making it work the rest of your mistakes will be fixed?

—That might be the best approach— she nodded. —I’ve made plenty of mistakes, Norwyn, but the most serious ones were all a consequence of my failure with the Spell. I grew bitter, sought revenge and power, I lost Micah, I killed you, joined the Horde where I made even worse decisions…— she elaborated, her tone raising until she was breathless. —I made terrible decisions…

—But you’re back here now— he completed. —Alright. Normally, I would tell you to rest, but I believe it’s better if you accompany me now, tell me everything you can recall, and we’ll figure out what to do next…

—Why are you never upset about me having killed you at least once?— she decided to ask, walking with him.

—It’s simple: It doesn’t surprise me— he jokingly said.

After a few hours of conversing, Norwyn and Light Spinner came to an agreement: like the last time, he would give her permission to test the Spell of Obtainment if she managed to improve it enough, but she had to keep investigating the time-travel phenomenon.

—With the information I have, I can pick up both things where I left off— she pointed out.

—Precisely. And after testing the Spell the last time, you probably know what went wrong— he added.

—I have an idea of what needs to be fixed still.

—Good. Then the same goes for the investigation of time-traveling. If you think it was the moment you lost Micah what triggered it, then follow that lead.

—It’s an idea for where to start looking, indeed. I had no clue before…

—Alright. If that’s all…

—One more thing— she interrupted. —Speaking of Micah: he should be kept in the dark.

—About time-travel? Sure.

—About the Spell too. He has helped me with it every time before, both to improve it and to cast it. I think that may be a mistake too— she uttered, quite disgusted. —I can’t believe it took me so many tries to realize endangering him is wrong— she scoffed. —No matter his age, he’s not made to attempt this spell.

—I understand. And commend you on such a sound decision— he congratulated her.

Light Spinner felt conflicted now.

Since she spent most of her time working on either the Spell or the research of time-traveling, she had little time to interact with Micah.

She still tutored him, but she no longer had time for him outside of teaching hours.

He’d constantly ask for some time, but get turned down over and over again.

Light Spinner kept telling herself this was for his own good, yet it certainly wasn’t easy.

—But, Master…

—I have much to work on, Micah. We’ll talk later— she sentenced, unable to look at his puppy eyes.

—Can’t I help?— he offered, more as a plea.

—No.

—But you let me help you before! Why not now!?

—This is not of your concern. You promised to do exactly as I say, and I’m telling you to leave. We will talk later.

That was… harsh.

But she knew the more she let him insist, the worse it would be.

Taken aback, the teen resignedly stammered —I- Ye-yes, Master. I’m sorry.

Light Spinner could see Micah’s hopelessness grow.

It was evident she gave him special treatment, and for years no one got her attention as much as him.

He was her star pupil.

But… she could see he didn’t feel like it.

As he grew older and became a man, a certain coldness appeared.

It was weak, however, and she could easily shatter it with the tiniest bit of attention for him.

That way, his admiration for her had its ups and downs, but never disappeared despite it all.

And then… then Micah became a father.

When he went to her for counsel, she was ready to turn him away as she knew nothing about paternity, but the moment she saw his expression, torn, panicked, and even hopeless, she couldn’t help indulging him.

The projects could wait for a bit, no?

It was clear to Light Spinner that he needed her now.

—I-I swear I’ve tried to not bother you, Master, but… I don’t know what to do— he hesitantly began, accepting a cup of tea from her. —After the last few days with Glimmer, I’ve been unable to stop thinking about what paternity is supposed to be. Whether I’m fit to be a father— he further explained, before taking a sip.

—Why are you questioning yourself like that?

—I didn’t have parents— he pointed out, without so much as a weak scoff. —My sister had a great mentor who was like a mother to her… And I- Well, I’m sorry to put it like this but I couldn’t help but see you in the same way…

—Me?

—Of course!

—I’m far from “mother” material, Micah— she insisted. —I… have to admit I have always cared for you as if you were my son, but in reality, I know I have no experience with paternity, had a terrible example myself, and…— she began, trailing off as she realized what the real problem was. —And I suppose, if you saw me as a mother, then you didn’t have a great example either. Is that why you’re doubting yourself?

—Yes…— he sighed. —I fear I did something wrong, that I upset you in some way, and I- Ah… I’m frankly scared to death that I’ll make the same mistakes with my daughter and…

—You won’t— she interrupted, putting her empty cup down. —I was never upset. And you, Micah, did nothing wrong. I won’t apologize for pushing you away, there’s no point and I have my reasons. But, there is no reason for you to behave like me— she elaborated. —You’ve always been caring, loving, warm… just be yourself and I’m sure your daughter will grow to love you— she assured him, with a soft expression that lasted a mere second before she cast it away. —What I mean is: there’s no reason for you to do what I did, trust me. The time will come when you’ll have to make tough decisions based on what’s best for her. But you can rest assured that you won’t become me— she concluded, smirking at the end.

—I- Tha-thank you, Master— he smiled, on the brink of tears. —But I have to disagree. Becoming you wouldn’t be that bad of a thing— he joked.

—Oh, it would most definitely be, Micah. You can be sure— she countered, with a warning tone.

—I suppose I can’t convince you otherwise— he sighed. He downed the rest of his tea in one go and stood up as he left the mug on the table. —Alright. I will let you get back to work— he decided. —I still wish you would let me help you… but if you haven’t in all these years, there’s no point in asking anymore.

—Sharp— she mocked him. —It’s mere research, nothing fancy or exciting…

—Right…

—Besides, you should focus on your little princess now.

—Of course— he chuckled. —Thank you for receiving me, Master. And for the reassurance. I really needed it.

—I could see that.

—I hope you’ll… receive me again, or visit sometime— he expressed, smiling softly.

—I’ll try— she replied, hoping she’d be able to.

A few more years passed, and Light Spinner little by little managed to make some time for Micah, but made a point of not wanting to discuss her projects with him.

And, of course, that led to him feeling like she didn’t trust him.

Until one day, Micah returned from the battlefield severely wounded.

He barely survived.

Light Spinner dropped everything to go see him… and that was when she realized the true severity of the war out there.

—Ugh…— the King groaned, waking up for the first time in hours.

—You’re finally awake— the sorceress noticed. —I’ll fetch your wife and your daughter…

—Master?— he weakly pronounced.

—Of course.

—You… sound angry.

—I am. Very much so— she confirmed. —It shouldn’t have reached this point. You shouldn’t have been on the battlefield still— she began, sight unfocused as she fell into a spiral of regret. —I was supposed to stop the bloodshed. I promised you!

—What?— he asked, confused, extracting her from the trance.

—No-nothing. Forget it.

—Was… that what you were working on… all these years? A-a way to stop… the bloodshed?

—Precisely— she decided to admit. —But I don’t have enough strength alone, and the Council won’t lend me their power.

—Then… let me help.

—Of course not. I will not risk you like that.

—Master…— he called. —Even if it’s… risky, I’m offering. You’re not… endangering me…

—I beg to disagree…

—Just wait until… I’m better. Do-don’t do it alone.

—I just want you to be safe, Micah.

—And I want you to be safe too, Master.

—The pupil should not take care of the tutor but the opposite— she insisted.

—When the pupil is a child, maybe. But I’m not…

Light Spinner scoffed amusedly while shaking her head.

He was really something…

—You will always be a child to me, Micah…— she mocked him. —Now, I’ll tell your wife that you’re awake. She and Glimmer have been worried sick for hours…

The sorceress returned to Mystacor at once.

She had to find that old ram…

—You’re looking for the Head Sorcerer? But it’s his lunchtime!— an acolyte stopped her.

—I don’t care if he’s eating, showering, or asleep; I need to talk to him now.

—Bu-but…

—Do I have to repeat myself!?

—A-alright! I’ll tell him you’re here!— the acolyte finally accepted.

She only had to wait a few minutes before Norwyn rushed outside, a bit offended but visibly trying to keep himself composed.

—Well, I see you’re in one whole piece, so what exactly was so urgent?

I may be safe and sound, but Micah hardly is! I can’t delay it anymore. I have to cast the spell; if it works, there will finally be no more bloodshed, we’ll defeat the Horde at last.

—And if it fails…

—I get sent back and can keep fixing things. I can’t say for sure yet if Micah’s feeling of betrayal is what triggers it, but I certainly don’t want to find out what will happen if he dies before that happens!— Light Spinner pointed out.

—That makes sense— he had to admit, pensive. —The alignment is tomorrow, but I haven’t spoken to the rest of the Council; you’d have to cast it alone…

—So I was planning.

—I see.

With serious and determined expressions, they stared at each other in silent agreement.

She would do it.

Despite Micah’s pleas… she would do it on her own.

She began preparations early the next day, to be ready in time for the alignment.

Doing it alone… it was taking more time than she recalled.

But it had to be this way.

For him.

He said he saw her as a mother… so it was time to behave at least a bit like a decent one and do something for him.

Protect him.

That’s the one thing that was on her mind when the alignment began.

So she started casting…

And a moment later, she was once again fighting for her life.

Two containments broke, the shield she had added around her collapsed too, and it didn’t take a genius to realize the main issue this time was the lack of balance…

She wasn’t powerful enough, that had always been the main issue.

—This cursed parasite! You won’t kill me! You never could!— she began yelling. —If I fall, I fall! But he will remain safe!

He will be safe this time…

That was all she cared about.

Except… that he walked into the Lunarium that same moment, dragging himself with some difficulty.

—What are you doing!?

—Don’t come closer!— she managed to yell, right before being swallowed and corrupted. —Agh!

—No! What have you done!?

—Micah!— Norwyn’s voice yelled behind him, rushing to stop the King from getting any closer. —What are you doing here?

—I told her not to do it alone! I told her I would help her!

—She never wanted to risk you like that— Norwyn denied, looking back at the form of the corrupted woman on the ground. —She was protecting you.

—No! I- Why!? I could have helped! I could- this didn’t have to happen!— he insisted. —Why didn’t she listen to me!?— he asked the Head Sorcerer, with a pained expression. Then, looking back at Shadow Weaver who was starting to get up, he yelled —Didn’t you ever trust me!? Was I not prodigious enough!? Or just too stupid!? Why would you risk yourself rather than letting me help!?

—Because…— she began, looking for the right words. But then she recalled: him feeling betrayed or heartbroken triggered the time-traveling, so she had to break his heart. —You were not ready. Never would be.

Norwyn immediately caught what she was doing and placed a hand on his shoulder, supportingly.

—I apologize, King Micah, but she’s no longer Light Spinner.

—No— he agreed. —My Master died…

With tears in his eyes, he stood straight and turned around to leave. And that exact moment, she felt all her senses shutting down as she was sent back in time once again.

She was already expecting to appear at the meeting from so many years ago, so it was no surprise, but of course, she still looked out of sorts to those around her.

She wondered for a moment whether the time to which she’s sent back can be chosen, and it gave her an idea of what angle to take this time for her investigation.

After taking a second to compose herself, Light Spinner began anew.

Chapter Text

She was already expecting to appear at the meeting from so many years ago, so it was no surprise, but of course, she still looked out of sorts to those around her.

She wondered for a moment whether the time to which she’s sent back can be chosen, and it gave her an idea of what angle to take this time for her investigation.

After taking a second to compose herself, Light Spinner began anew.

—Light…

—I know. I don’t… look well. You’ll have to excuse me, but this meeting must be suspended— the sorceress interrupted. —I have to speak with you in private, Head Sorcerer.

—What about?

—Something of your interest.

—And what was this about?

—I’ll explain everything once we’re alone, Norwyn. Can you dismiss the meeting already!?

—Right…— he sighed, waving his hand, gesturing at the rest of the Council to leave. Once everyone was out, he insisted —Now, speak. And you could be a bit more respectful, no?

—You’re lucky I still have any respect left for you, Old Ram— she scoffed. —I’ll be brief: this is the fifth time I’m living this moment. I’ve been sent back in time four times and… the last two I decided to tell you this same thing— she began. —Ever since, I’ve been investigating time-travel as per your prerogative, and while I may have figured out what triggers the phenomenon, I now wonder how to control to what moment in my past it sends me…

—What exactly is the purpose?

—Let me explain everything…

—That’s… quite a story.

—It’s all true.

—And I believe you. But you must admit it’s not easy to process— Norwyn insisted.

—Every time before you seemed to accept it quite easily…

He hummed, pensive, and hesitated to answer.

—Do you think each iteration you’ve lived has affected the next one?

—I- Well, I hadn’t considered it— she admitted, a bit shocked. —However, that could be… the case. After all, my relationship with you has changed significantly since the first time. It seems to have… improved— Light Spinner reflected.

—Perhaps it is your behaviour that has changed enough to entirely affect the way things play out, including the way you interact with me.

—That actually makes more sense— she nodded. —After all, if the purpose of these time-rewinds is to fix my mistakes, perhaps changing my mindset and attitude is what I need.

—After all you’ve told me, I believe so— he agreed. —However, about the Spell of Obtainment…

—What?

—I don’t think I’ll allow it this time— he denied. The sorceress gave him a shocked expression, and he explained —Based on your experiences, I’d say performing that spell at all is a mistake. It keeps failing, regardless of whatever improvements you make.

—But- That-that spell is the work of my life! I’ve dedicated decades to it! Repeatedly!

—You must reconsider, Light Spinner. For your own good…

—My own good!?

—I’ll tell you what: speak to Micah. Tell him all of this and listen to what he says— the Head Sorcerer suggested. —If you’re doing this for him…

—He’s a teen. What can he possibly understand?

—Enough— Norwyn insisted. —It’s no secret that he admires you, and if you care about him, I know you’ll probably value his opinion much more than mine— he pointed out.

Light Spinner remained pensive for a moment. Looking down, she considered his words and let out a long sigh.

—I’ll speak to him.

When Light Spinner sat with Micah to explain how she had lived the same, or rather similar, events four times, and that now it would be the fifth time, she was absolutely not expecting him to be so thoughtful and sensible in his reflections.

—So… you were, uh, randomly sent back in time four times?

—Yes.

—And each time you did things differently…

—Correct.

—And you… were corrupted every time?— he then asked, sounding sorrowful and in disbelief.

—Yes… which seemed to affect you greatly…

—Of course it would! I-I…

—Calm down— Light Spinner interrupted, seeing how the teen had jumped up from his seat and gestured wildly.

—I can’t! You’re telling me the Council has never helped you, a-and that even with my help, and all those modifications, it still failed, a-and you…

—I know, but none of that has happened now because I’m back to before it all went down— she reminded him.

—Then don’t do it!

The sorceress opened her eyes wide and felt numb. With a shocked expression, she stared at the teen, speechless for a moment.

—It’s the work of my life, Micah!

—That nearly killed you several times!

—I can’t just throw everything away! It’s the one chance we have to face The Horde on level ground: no more bloodshed, no more losses. And what’s important: you won’t have to die at their hands…

—I- Wait, die?

—At least twice, in the original version of my life and the latest, you either died or were severely wounded…

—But…

—You’ll have a kid, Micah! It’s also about her!

—I don’t want to die either, but- I-I mean, you can’t just- I don’t want you to get hurt for me!— he insisted. Her only answer was a frustrated grunt, so he grabbed one of her hands between his and very seriously demanded —Promise me you won’t do it.

At that moment, Light Spinner saw the man he would turn into, instead of the kid he currently was, and let out a resigned sigh.

—Alright. I won’t— she accepted. —I’ll only research the time-travel phenomenon…

—Can I help!?— he immediately asked, eyes shining.

It took them many years but, little by little, Light Spinner and Micah made some progress. Unfortunately nothing major, but better than in previous years.

Now the sorceress could answer her question: she was returning to the moment she considered, deep down, was the beginning of the end. If she focused on a different moment as the origin of her mistakes, then she’d be sent back to that moment instead…

Great.

But why!?

She still couldn’t answer that.

And Micah considered there would be no chance to figure that out since this was surely going to be the last iteration…

She wished so, but… part of her knew it wouldn’t be.

After all…

She had secretly been working on the Spell of Obtainment the past few years.

There was a significant difference this time, however.

One that could… change things.

After retelling him every single iteration, the events, and the improvement both in their relationship and in the Spell, the Head Sorcerer had changed his mind and agreed to help her cast it one day.

—But it must still remain secret from Micah— Light Spinner concluded. —If he were to learn about this new attempt, he’d want to help. And right now, he needs to focus on his daughter.

—Didn’t he ask you not to do this all those years ago when I told you to speak with him?

—He did, but he’s risking his life out there on the battlefield… I must do something! And your help might be enough.

—What if it isn’t?

—I go back, Norwyn. But now I can choose when to go— Light Spinner pointed out.

—Alright— he sighed. —Then we’ll try during the next alignment. Just… Make sure to fix things if it fails…

—I swear I will— she nodded.

—Also, if it fails again, do consider maybe casting the Spell is the mistake in itself and not the cause of the… long list you have.

—Right— she chuckled. —I’ll keep it in mind.

Preparations for the Spell of Obtainment began early.

King Micah was blissfully oblivious to it since his main focus was the war and his newborn…

But knowing wouldn’t have changed things…

After all, when the casting began, things went south pretty quickly.

The first containment, even when reinforced, cracked soon enough.

The second containment, triggered immediately, started leaking within a minute, and the arms of the parasite soon surrounded them both.

And the shields they had around each of them… they also didn’t last long.

Before he could utter a word, Norwyn had been swallowed into nothingness.

Light Spinner had a bitter memory resurface upon seeing that…

And then she herself was swallowed and spat out as Shadow Weaver.

There was no denying it.

It really was the spell.

It had always been the damned spell.

Norwyn was right, and the sorceress hated that.

She especially hated that she indirectly killed him again this time, despite their newfound friendship….

Well, much as it pained her, she now knew what she had to do next time…

But first, she had to reset the timeline.

It was time to find Micah, break his heart, and go back…

Shadow Weaver knew that chaos would break in Mystacor as soon as the disappearance of the Head Sorcerer was known, but… well, she didn’t have to worry about that if she was going to restart the timeline, right?

She only had to reach Micah and when he learnt that not only she but also Norwyn had kept him in the dark about the Spell, he’d feel so betrayed that she’ll get sent back!

Except…

Except that she was intercepted as soon as she left the Lunarium.

—Who are you!?

—Where’s the Head Sorcerer!?

—Wait, that’s Light Spinner!

—Let go of me!— the woman yelled, desperate. —You don’t know what’s at stake!

—You’re going nowhere!— a councillor retorted, casting a barrier around her.

—Fine! Then bring the King of Bright Moon to me!

—No! The Head Sorcerer will handle you…

—Norwyn is dead!— she spat, not caring about how that sounded. —Bring Micah!

—What!?

—The Head Sorcerer…

—He can’t be dead!?

—What have you done!?

A dozen voices overlapped as they questioned her, indignant, sorrowful, panicked.

It was overwhelming.

So much so, that she never noticed a councillor casting a spell on her…

She realized, a bit too late, that she was falling asleep.

When she woke up, her wish had been granted.

Micah was there.

Right in front of her… Towering over her.

On the other side of a magical barrier.

—What have you done, Light Spinner?

—I…

—Don’t answer that. I know what you’ve done. But I distinctively recall asking you not to do it— he severely interrupted her.

—Micah…

—No, don’t call my name— he cut her. —What did you do to Norwyn? Killed him again?

—It was the Spell this time. But… you could say I did— she admitted. —But, Micah…

—Only answer my questions!— he interrupted once more, quite angry. —Were you trying to come to me to-to reset time? Are you… going back?

—That’s the plan.

—So you’ll fix all this mess.

—Yes.

—Then you better promise me something.

—Anything— she nodded, pushing herself up from the floor. —Whatever you say, Micah.

—Return to the day I asked you to be my mentor.

—I will. I-I’ll focus on it.

—And turn me down— he demanded.

—What?

—If you’re doing this thing… I’d rather you don’t let me look up to you. I can’t- I don’t want to see my Master fall again.

—And if I don’t cast the spell?— she desperately offered. —For real this time!

—I can’t trust you… But I can’t control what you’ll do either. So… I will have to trust.

—Micah…— she sighed, feeling her senses go numb.

But she shouldn’t be leaving yet!

She hadn’t had time to refocus on the moment he asked her to go!

She had no time…

How ironic; having all the time in the world yet still not enough.

Well, then she’d have to give up on the Spell of Obtainment for real this time.

After all, she was, once again, back at the meeting with the Council.

Could she forfeit the Spell, the work of her very long life?

She’ll have to try…

Hello! Welcome to the 5th chapter! Technically the last one if we consider the 6th chapter an epilogue XD

How ironic; having all the time in the world yet still not enough.

Well, then she’d have to give up on the Spell of Obtainment for real this time.

After all, she was, once again, back at the meeting with the Council.

Could she forfeit the Spell, the work of her very long life?

She’ll have to try…

—Light Spinner?

—Why do you always call my name?— she groaned, as her senses finished adjusting. —Never mind. Dismiss the meeting. I… changed my mind.

—This is highly irregular— a councillor scoffed.

—I am aware!— Light Spinner barked. —But maybe if you ever get sent back in time five damned times, you’ll understand!

—Sent… back in time?

—Yes, Old Ram. If you’re interested, I’ll tell you— she smirked, still feeling a bit dizzy but hiding it.

—Alright, meeting dismissed. You, with me. Tell me everything— he ordered.

—Sure.

—That’s insane! Why would I ever agree to cast the Spell of Obtainment!?

—I’m as shocked as you. That came as quite a surprise. I believe… you just trusted me. Not that it would work. I think you trusted I would make the right decision once it failed and sent me back…

—So… you won’t perform it this time?

—No…— she sighed. —You were right. Micah was right.

—I sense a “but”.

But, if I were to somehow mess up with Micah again, then I promised him I would go back to the moment he asked me to be his mentor, and… turn him down.

—And… will you?

—If I do mess up… then yes. It’s the least- I-I owe him that much. And I know how to do it. I would have done it this time if I hadn’t been caught by surprise.

—Then I sure hope you won’t “mess up”— Norwyn chuckled. —Oh, but if you do… I’d welcome the company.

—I have no idea why we’ve had such a friendly relationship in my past iterations, but I can always try to make it happen sooner if I return to that moment— she nodded, with a faint smile.

Meeting Micah afterwards was… bittersweet.

—So they won’t… help you?

—I didn’t present my plan, Micah. It’s doomed to fail…

—What, why!?

—Just trust me on this.

—But, Master…

—No buts. No one is casting that spell— she interrupted. —Instead, we’ll focus on your training.

—Awesome!— he exclaimed, eyes shining.

—You’ll grow to become a powerful warrior, Micah. But you need to learn to protect yourself too.

—I will!

—You better…— she chuckled.

Light Spinner did as promised.

She formed Micah into a mighty warrior, who inevitably became King of Bright Moon after meeting and falling for Queen Angella.

However, his new family changed his priorities.

The sorcerer went from protecting himself first, to protecting others first.

Regardless of the danger.

—I’m fine, Master. Don’t worry.

—“Don’t worry”!? Do you have any idea what you did!?

—I saved half my squad.

—You almost died!

—But I didn’t!

—Micah, what did I teach you!?

—To protect myself first…— he repeated, looking away.

—So!?

—So I’ve always done! But I couldn’t leave them all to die!

—You must protect yourself first! If someone can be saved, you do so when you yourself are out of danger!

—There was no time!

—Precisely!

—I won’t apologize for saving the parents of at least a dozen children!

—I’m not saying that! I’m telling you to be mindful of yourself!— Light Spinner insisted.

—But that implies…— he was arguing, when a door opened and a petite girl with pink hair walked in, brushing her eyes. —Oh, Baby Girl. What are you doing up this late?

—Daddy… Why are you screaming?— she asked, as soon as he picked her up.

—It’s nothing, my Love. Daddy is just having a little argument.

—Again?

—Again…— he sighed, side-eyeing Light Spinner as reproachingly as humanly possible.

—Alright. I’ll leave— the sorceress muttered, resigned. —But, think about it, Micah— she added. —How would she feel… if you didn’t come back?

The woman stared at the little kid in his arms for a bit, then finally sighed resignedly and left the palace.

That wasn’t the first time they argued about this, nor would it be the last.

The problem, however, was that she had upset the Princess, and that earned her a kinda-deserved ban from the palace.

Little by little, everyone grew sick of her.

The Queen, the Princess, the King’s squad, their families, the guards, and Micah himself.

—You are always being so pessimistic! What is your problem!?

My problem!?

Her problem was that she could do nothing against the Horde, after so many tries, and was doing what she could to keep him alive.

Her problem was that she had seen him hurt enough times to want it all to stop!

—Yes! Why are you so… so…

—“So” what!?

—Overbearing!

—I am only looking out for you!

—I don’t need that!

—Yes, you do!

—Of course not! You already taught me all I could need!

—But you’re not applying that knowledge!

—Master!

—Micah!

—Forget it— he finally sighed. —And… please leave.

—But…

—I don’t want to keep arguing. Every day it’s an argument.

—Micah, please, listen to me— she pleaded, grabbing him by the shoulders. —You will die one day if you aren’t more careful.

—If I must die, then I will die. We can’t control fate— he argued.

—Don’t you understand I’m only doing this for you!?

—No! You-you made me into the warrior I am! But now you don’t want me to protect the people around me! You want me to fight The Horde but not when it puts my life at risk! You want to have control of everything, and that’s not possible, Light Spinner!

—I don’t- No, Micah! I’m trying to make sure you stay safe!

—I don’t need you to look out for me! You’re not my mother!

Right.

She’s not.

He once told her he saw her as one…

But that never happened after all, did it?

—I am not— she finally managed to nod, swallowing hard. —And I don’t intend to be.

—Then back off and let me fight as I know.

—I… suppose I should— she sighed, looking down. —But tell me something: do you regret asking me to teach you?

—I- Uh, I don’t… know. I mean… It’s all I know.

—If you, or I, could go back in time… would you rather you never asked? Or that I… turned you down?

—I… Um… I have… no idea. I don’t know who I would be if not who I am… But- Ah… Master, I didn’t mean to scorn you or anything…

—I know you didn’t, don’t worry. That’s not why I asked— she clarified, looking away. —Just, if- Do you think you’d be happier if you had had an easier childhood? If growing up you had been a careless teen instead of my pupil?

—Well, I… still don’t know. But I won’t deny I certainly felt like I grew up too fast.

—I see— she sighed. —I won’t bother you anymore, then…

—Light Spinner— he called, as the woman turned to leave. —I am grateful for being your pupil. Even if you had turned me down back then, I wouldn’t have given up on eventually becoming your apprentice.

That made her smile.

—Thank you. I appreciate that.

The woman returned to her room in Mystacor feeling conflicted.

Perhaps… having such a close relationship with Micah wasn’t a good idea.

Perhaps she did have to return and keep him from being her pupil.

However, how could she return to that moment, which she now considered the real turning point, without breaking his heart?

Without disappointing him?

Without betraying him?

She had been unable to answer many of her questions about time-travel, and saying she could “control it” would be an exaggeration.

So…

Now she had to work on returning without hurting him herself.

Some time passed.

Light Spinner saw Micah far less…

And one night, as she went to sleep, she dreamt of something.

The answer.

Not to why she was being sent back in time…

Nor to how that strange time-traveling magic worked.

She dreamt about the answer to a question she didn’t know she had: what she wants.

Light Spinner woke up feeling illuminated.

She wanted nothing more than to live in peace. To see those she cares about being comfortable and without a care in the world. To teach magic for the love of it, without having to worry about whether she was teaching something useful against The Horde.

She wanted to live.

She wanted Micah to live.

Somehow, she wanted Norwyn to live.

So she would return in time once more, she’d find a way, and she’d make sure not only that Micah grew away from her influence, but also that her vision would be fulfilled.

It would take time, it would perhaps take a miracle, but she was stubborn.

She wouldn’t give up until she managed it.

And she would manage it.

In fact, she didn’t understand it herself, but she just knew she would.

Keeping that moment in mind, the moment she wanted to return to, she kept investigating, trying, testing, and no matter how many times she failed, she simply kept going.

And then it happened.

Just like the first time, one day she went to sleep, and woke up the morning she was teaching illusions to some kids in the gardens of Mystacor.

The morning Micah interrupted her lesson with his little illusion of a ram…

Chapter Text

Just like the first time, one day she went to sleep, and woke up the morning she was teaching illusions to some kids in the gardens of Mystacor.

The morning Micah interrupted her lesson with his little illusion of a ram…

As she recovered her senses, Micah’s ram destroyed her phoenix and it took Light Spinner a moment to realize what was happening. But of course, and mostly feeling it like an impulse, she quickly recast her illusion and destroyed the ram as her phoenix rose, proud and triumphant.

What a show-off, that kid.

Just like herself.

She could hardly remember it, but she praised him and corrected him originally.

Time to take a different direction.

—What is a third year doing here instead of being in class?

—I’m bored, Light Spinner! I've been doing light illusions since before I can even remember. Can’t you teach me the cool stuff!?

—The cool stuff?— she asked, raising a brow. —You want to levitate, and travel through mirrors, and shapeshift, don’t you?— she laughed.

—Exactly!

—That’s good. You will! In due time— she replied, while correcting her students’ casting.

—Aww, what!? No!

—Micah…

—Please! I'll prove it to you that I'm worthy!— he promised, overexcited.

—I believe I just told you “in due time”— she insisted, turning to give him a severe look.

—But…

—No more buts. Return to your tutors.

—What if I want you to be my tutor?

—I only train the truly gifted— she began, looking away. —And while you might be among them, I believe it’s too early for you to begin training with me.

—Then when!?

Light Spinner took a deep breath, joined her hands behind her back, and slowly exhaled as she turned towards him.

—I’ll tell you what: Being as prodigious as you are, it probably won’t take you long to graduate. And once that happens, you will have to make your graduation investigation— she explained.

—Yeah, I… don’t look forwards to it— he admitted.

—What if I told you to look for me when you’re ready for it? I’ll guide your investigation— she offered.

—You would!?

—Yes.

—Really!?

—Of course— she nodded.

—Awesome! I’ll be the fastest graduate ever!

—I’m sure you will— she chuckled.

Light Spinner retired to her room as soon as the class ended.

Alright, one thing done: Micah wouldn’t be raised by her.

But then… what to do about the war against The Horde?

And there was also her promise to Norwyn.

Well, two birds with one stone, she’d solve it the next day.

How exactly?

She wasn’t sure.

For starters, she considered, she’d have to tell the Head Sorcerer about the time-traveling thing…

Maybe, with her investigation about it, they would finally manage to understand that erratic magic and use it!

But until then, she’d have to come up with an alternative to her original plan to fight The Horde.

And she had an idea…

As she went to sleep and got into bed, she repeated to herself over and over again that she had made the right choice.

She had… made the right choice.

—Well, that’s quite the story— Norwyn finally said, after carefully listening to Light Spinner.

—Everything is true. Time-travel, the many attempts, the failed Spell, what I did now… Everything— she insisted.

—And I believe you— he nodded. —The most unbelievable part is actually that you’re here telling me all of this.

—It’s what you asked me to do…

—Precisely. I’m still wondering why you’re finally listening to me— he argued.

—Because, for some reason, you started to listen to me…— she replied.

—So, since in some iteration of your many re-livings I decided to hear you out, now you also… hear me out?

—You could say so.

—Ah… Alright— he sighed. —In any case: since you’re not proposing we perform the Spell of Obtainment, what is it that you suggest?

—We should stop hiding. Or, at the very least, offer our help to the Princesses. We can’t leave everything to them and just “trust” they will handle things.

—You don’t trust their power…

—I know for a fact that they can’t do it alone— she remarked. —Micah will grow to become King of Bright Moon, he will join the army, fight in the battlefields. The first and only sorcerer to do so— she explained. —We can change that.

—We aren’t fighters, Light Spinner.

—We aren’t, but we can be. In fact, we don’t really need to be. We can offer support from the sidelines, from the back. And those who want to fight like Micah will, can become fighters.

—Hmm… I see— Norwyn hummed. —I’ll consider it. If you want to take the lead and make preparations for a first attempt at supporting the army, go ahead— he decided. —However, do not do anything drastic. Don’t act without my authorization.

—Of course, I understand.

—And thank you, Light Spinner.

—For?

—Putting all this effort into fixing things.

—And there’s plenty more to fix yet…— she smirked.

As the years started to pass by, the sorceress’ suggestion became a whole program.

Mystacor developed a series of teams dedicated to providing support, both in the battlefield and back in the safety of the kingdoms, and then had a whole squad of magicians who trained with weapons to fight in the frontlines.

With their help, the war against The Horde became far easier.

They managed to keep their forces at bay, hindered their advance, reduced their influence over conquered land, and even… managed to rescue a whole group of orphans taken by The Horde forces over the years.

Light Spinner made a point of staying away from said orphans…

Then one day, after around a decade, Micah finally went to look for Light Spinner.

He was something around twenty-four or twenty-five years old already, so she couldn’t help but wonder what had taken him so long.

He went to find her one day and invited her to have some tea with him and his sister so they could discuss his investigation thing.

Obviously, she accepted and soon the three were sitting in the library, with their teas and some books.

—Alright, shall we begin?— he asked, cheerful.

—So, Micah and Castaspella— she began. —Nice to meet you, by the way.

—Likewise— the young sorceress replied.

—The idea is to discuss your investigation project, right?

—Correct.

—Then I must ask…

—My graduation, right— he guessed. —I graduated like… four years ago, almost five, actually, but I’ve been postponing the investigation— he explained.

—Because someone had you distracted, huh?— his sister mocked him.

—That’s recent!

—What did I miss?

—Well, my dear brother here may have caught the eye of the Queen of Bright Moon— Castaspella giggled. —So, yeah, I had to remind him he would lose his title if he didn’t actually prepare his investigation soon— she explained. —Which is also why I’m here. I haven’t graduated yet, I’m… not good with practical stuff, but I excel in the theoretical field, or so I’ve been told…

—Yes, yes— Micah nodded, clearing his throat. —I’m a bit impatient, and I didn’t really have any good ideas for the investigation. But my sis came up with a few!

—Alright, I’m all ears.

—Well, I’ve been thinking an interesting investigation field is everything related to magical energy manipulation and sharing. As in, being able to share magical energy between different magicians, making it possible to cast better, more powerful spells.

—Hmm… I see. What else?

—There’s also the idea of magically enhancing weaponry. It’s been done, but there are no proper studies on the matter and it may have unexplored potential— Castaspella went on. —Oh, but my favourite idea, and the one I really think he should work with, is time-travel!

—And I insist that’s stupid— Micah immediately commented, rolling his eyes.

—Wait, wait— Light Spinner stopped them, before they could start bickering. Eyes wide open, she asked the sorceress —Why exactly are you interested in the matter?

—I’ve been having… weird dreams about it. And I may or may not have heard the Head Sorcerer mention the subject.

—He’s an idiot— Light Spinner muttered, deadpan. —Alright. I’ll admit that’s actually a field with a lot of potential— she decided to tell them. —It’s far from stupid, Micah.

—But…

—No buts! I won!

—There is a but— the woman decided to interrupt. —If you do go with that subject, I will need you both to keep everything strictly theoretical— she requested.

—That’s my specialty— Castaspella sighed.

—Are you really… endorsing this?

—Of course— she nodded, serious.

—Alright, whatever. Let’s do it, then— Micah accepted. —Let’s research time-travel.
