Chapter Text

Welcome to the book everyone!

To start off, this book will update every week on Thursdays. All the chapters have been written. There is no outright romance in this book, because the romance wont be properly explored until the second book. I have scheduled them this way to give me writing recovery time and then time to get started on the second book, which will explore the Kira case and the romance part of this.

That being said, Here are the ages of Raito and L at the beginning and end of the fic:

As this is mostly a chat-fic, the chapters may seem rather short. And because I have trouble writing someone as generally calm as L and collected as "Light", so as Raito and Ankoko are pretty much Oc's they will be very different, and L may be somewhat OOC. I'm good at character study, but no so good at mimicking characters in writing. There also very much will not be very much character study in this fic, and I am unsure if I want to do so with the second book.

Quick Edit: I did change Ankoko's name to Kurai, and I forgot to mention something for those who are not in the know.

Raito is Light. I decided to use this version of the name despite being a English dub watcher because it was the original name used in the Japanese version as well as sounding better. Plus, if I had used Light, then I would have had to have his twins name as Dark, and I am not that uncreative. Names meaning those things are bad enough.

L was prepared to type back when the doorbell rang. He didn’t even bother asking for Watari to get it, and decided to actually walk to the door and grab it himself. He could smell the food, stir-fry by the smell of it and the name of the package.

L couldn't help but notice that was the first smiley face he had gotten since the beginning of the conversation.

L sat behind the screen, where he had been for the last week working on a case and waiting almost obsessively for the next message from his friend. It's been a week since he had spoken to his…friend? Acquaintance? Significant-annoyance? Whatever they are. He hasn’t gone a day without a message in almost 6 months. What could have happened???

Are they dead?

Grounded?

Kidnaped? 

Homeless?

Ignoring him?

…

He does not acknowledge how much the idea of the last one hurt.

Whatever happened, it had L worried. That surprised him more than anything

Then the doorbell rings for the hotel room he is staying in for the case. He did not order any food, and Quillish is currently sleeping.

He was not expecting visitors.

With a gun in his hand, he checked the door, before unlocking it to accept the chicken express that had been delivered. There was a note with it.

L smiles at the warm feeling in his chest.

L waited anxiously by the computer for a message from Raito. Any message to indicate that he was alive. It's been 2 months since their heart-to-heart conversation, 3 weeks since Raito stopped replying to L. It was anxiety-inducing.

What if his business got caught in the wrong crowd?

Maybe he’s just grounded?

What if there is an accident?

Should I check the police database..?

…

Why haven't I done that yet?

Mentally betrating himself for his lack of thought, he hacked into Japans police database ( With the program Raito made L thought in mild despair), and searched for any information about Raito that he could find.

Raito Yagami

L recognized the signs of a panic attack as they appeared. He just couldn’t, couldn’t! stop it no matter how much he tried.

I swear if you pass out on me I will hide all the sweats in your house AND I will dump water on you!

L’s breathing evened out. Its time to make some calls.

Raito Yagami has had a very bad month. First, some insecure idiot decided to get his friends to gang up on him on his way to self defence lessons-courtesy of L with permission from his mother “As long as you keep your grades up and try to socialize!” Then he was sent home early from said lessons because of the consequential injuries. There goes my stress relief.

Then he was kidnaped. By fucking Nanashi !

The girl had started stalking him a month ago after he rejected her advances one too many times. He knows because he has a alarm set up specifically for her if her phone is ever in a certain radius of him after she tried to ambush him on his way to work. They go to self defence classes together, and she seemed upset that not only was he doing better than her, but that he wouldn’t play into the role she put him in of “Prince Charming”. 

Now, not only has he been kidnaped by the most annoying person in existence, but he can’t even talk to L because she doesnt want him to have any outside communication! 

Unfortunately, Nanashi isn’t stupid. She has been injecting him with Muscle relaxers ever since he woke up and keeps him constantly bound in a room with a one way mirror.

How did she even get this place??? Plot reasons

Great, now I’m hearing voices.

Raito stared at the wall in silence, refusing to speak even after she started hitting him for ignoring her.

BANG!

The sound of the police filled the air as Raito was wrapped in a hug by his father  and brother. He said nothing.

Huh. Thats weird.

Why doesn’t he feel anything?

Everything feels far away.

Who’s screaming?

BANG!

Why do they look so concerned?

I’m fine. 

Why is everything so blurry?

He says nothing as he faints.

[Hey L.]

[Hello Raito.]

[I missed you. I missed you so much.]

[I know.]

[I’m scared.]

[I know.]

[Mom finally approved my request to attend school online. I think dad was the one who talked her into it.] 

[I’m still going to pay for it.]

[No you are not.]

[Right.]

[I’m sending food over.]

[Light?]

[My parents are out right now and my siblings are at school.]

[I really don’t want to be alone.]

[Ok.]

The computer buzzed only once before Raito accepted the call.

“Low.” Raito said once, looking at him in a sort of detached desperation.

“Your dissociating.” L said in reply. A nod was all he got. “That is ok. Do you have anything to keep you grounded.” Headshake. “Ok. Can you get up and walk around for me.” He does so without a word. Slowly the aimless wandering turned into rushed pacing. And then he was sobbing.

“Oh gosh. I don’t know what I’m doing right now.” L just watched him.

“That’s alright. You don’t need to do anything.” The pacing just got more aggressive. 

“There must have been something I should have done differently.”

“Perhaps, but that doesn’t matter right now. What happened happened, and now all we can do is move on and learn from it.” Ever so logical, L knew exactly what to say. The pacing slowed down until Raito finally sat back down and looked at L. Really looked at L. Eyebags that have only gotten darker in the last month. All the healthy weight he had been trying to make him build was gone from stress. He looked as ruined as Raito felt.

“Yeah,” He whispered. “We will move on. And nothing like this will happen again.

They stayed on call for hours, until the rest of the Yagami family came home to a much calmer and happier son.

[I’ve been monitoring the cameras and some other stuff around the area with my *Special Program*, and theres a guy that looks like you bet is very obviously not you hovering around the area.]

[That was so badass!!]

[I’m on my knees in prayer for the badassery that is Naomi Misora!]

[Then it’s a good thing I finally got the house to myself.]

[Hey, are you Ok?]

[No, but I will be.]

[Ok.]

[Your voice is rather soothing.]

[Sure thing.]

[Cameras or no cameras?]

[No cameras.]

[I don’t think I would be able to stop myself from crying if cameras are on and I can’t cry before the interrogation.]

This time, the call buzzed on Raito’s personal mobile phone for a few seconds before the call took.

“Hey.” L sounded so tired. 

“Hi,” Raito replied. “How are you holding up?”

“Pushing the emotions down right now.” Raito hummed in sympathy. “I blame you for this. How dare you push healthy emotions on me.” 

There was a small laugh from the brunette. “You need them. They are the only thing stopping you from becoming our supreme robot overlord with your wicked brain.”

“No,” L started in his ‘Matter-Of-Fact’ voice, “I would not have become a robot, I would have become a god.” Raito could almost see the faint smile on his face.

“Oh my! I sincerely apologize your divine-ness!” He said in faux fear. “I shall forever bow before your feet the day you decide silly human emotions are below you, and take your rightful place as our supreme not-robotic leader~” That got a laugh out of L: a laugh that sounded bitter and broken, but a laugh none-the-less. 

There were a few moments of silence. Not comfortable, but not uncomfortable. Just, quiet.

“I don’t want to hang up yet.” L said quietly. “I’m not ready to face him. Not after A. I can’t see Beyond after everything that happened.”

“Then you don’t have to.” Raito sighed and rubbed his face. “Tell them that you recognize him from your childhood and fear a conflict of interest.”

“I can’t.” A slight shuffling was heard over the other line. Papers, sheets, his beautifully long hair… Snap out of it Raito! “I have been wallowing in my own grief and guilt for so long. It’s time I face it.” Raito nods.

“Ok. Just remember, no matter what he says, what happened was not your fault.” The words spoken were soft, yet Raito knew L would feel them like a blow to the gut. “You were a child. A genius, and extremely gifted, but still a child. It is not your fault the adults in your life failed all of you. It is not your fault the pressure on the successors was too much for A. Even if something different could have been done, it is too late to do anything about it right now. So no matter what happened, A, B, all the other successors, and every victim lost, none of it is your fault. You hear me?” Everything was silent, save for the labored breathing on both ends.

“...Ok…”

“Good. Now go get some closure.”

[I’m sending a nice Dark chocolate bar your way.]

[Thank you. Whats the occasion?]

[Your birthday obviously.]

[Right.]

[Did you forget.]

[Kind of hard to do so when you have a identical twin everyone loves and adores.]

[Ah.]

[Your mother again?]

[Yeah.]

[It seems the fear from the incident has finally faded and I’ve gone back to being the disappointment background twin.]

[Did your dad at least remember?]

[Yeah actually.]

[Got me a nice pair of shoes and 31183 yen with a “Congratulations on becoming an adult son.”]

[Wow.]

[Thats it, I’m buying you an apartment away from them.]

[Or you can even move in with me if you’d like?]

[Actually, I would like that.]

[But let me finish high school first.]

[I can find a nice programming school nearby you, or I can continue with my online classes while my business continues to grow.]

[And even be a consultant on some of your cases on occasion!]

[Is that the plan?]

[Yes.]

[As long as I can be near you, yes.]

[Then I cannot wait till you graduate.]

[It really is a pain you had to be held back because you got kidnapped.] 

[Yeah. At least Ani was held back as well due to all the absences, and I can try to catch up online.]

[My mother told me to pace myself though because it will look bad to skip a grade for no reason.]

[As if me being held back is any better.]

[Have I told you I hate your mother?]

[Many times.]

[My brother is calling, I got to go.]

[I eagerly await.]

“Whats up?” Raito stared at his brother expectantly. Ankoko grinned and dropped a present in his lap.

“Happy birthday big brother.”  Raito rolled his eyes. 

“I’m only 30 minutes older old, Kurai.” The familiar banter started up again, and Raito slowly relaxed in the presence of his twin. Said twin wore a look of expectance and excitement on his face as he gestured for him to open it. Raito hesitantly opened the gift, just to tear up. It wasn’t anything special, just a note and a bracelet, but the significance…

“You remembered…” Kurai’s smile turned sadder. 

“Of course I did. We promised each other, and you are still my twin, despite what mother thinks.” A tear slipped down Raito’s face at the memory…

They were 8 years old, and still thick as thieves. Acted like them too. One day, they saw their father with an old watch, talking with a strange man about how it doesn’t work anymore and how he wan planning on selling it. Their mother also had an old bracelet her mother had given her that she was planning on throwing away because the clasp broke and she could wear it anymore. 

So of course, the twins took them.

“What should we do with them?” Kurai had said. Raito thought very hard, before excitedly grabbing a piece of paper and colored pencils.

“Lets write a note to each other!” He would say, grabbing a paper and beginning to write. “And when we are 18, we will give each other the note and one of the things!” Ani gasped with sparkles in his eyes.

“THATS BRILLIANT!” He also grabbed a paper and set to work.

A single tear slipped down Raito’s cheek. He tackled his brother onto the bed, and sobbed into his chest while Kurai rubbed his back. 

“I miss you. Oh God I missed you.” Kurai shushed him

“I missed you too. But I am here now. And no matter what, I’m never leaving you again, in any way.” He kissed his forehead as the twins fell asleep in each others arms, unaware of the lines of fate twisting themselves in a new direction.
