You'll Rise Again

Summary:

Sometimes a change in career doesn't change anything until it does. Newgate would never stand by and let a child suffer because of their parents. Unfortunately for him Homing isn't so easily nested.

Chapter 1: Fall

Chapter Text

“Are you really sure you want to do this? There is no taking this back once it's done.” Admiral Newgate asks the Tenryuubito before him. A humble man by the name of Donquixote Homing.

“Yes I'm sure. The life of a Tenryuubito, great though it is, is not to my taste I'm afraid.” The small man answers honestly. “I wish to live a humble life, just like every other human.”

It took everything in him not to point out how hypocritical that statement was. Very few humans get to choose the life they live. That luxury is reserved for well off civilians and the few pirates strong enough to stay free. And apparently foolish Tenryuubito.

“Are you the only one leaving then?” Newgate asks, trying his best to keep his tone neutral. He promised no judgment and he'd deliver. Judgment could wait until he got absolutely shit face drunk with Roger later.

“No. My family has agreed to come with me.” The man answers. “They should be here soon.”

His first impression is promptly thrown out the window. Donquixote Homing is a naive fool of a man. The world would eat his kids alive for the sole unforgivable sin of being born from celestial blood. He and his assistant share a look.

The two share polite small talk as they wait. Each word out of the man's mouth causes Newgate to seethe internally. A plan quickly forming he changes tactics. He quickly warns his assistant who thankfully agrees and dashes off. Shortly after a frazzled woman with two small kids arrives. Homing's brother follows close behind.

“Thank you for the escort Admiral Newgate. I apologize for the trouble this may cause you.” The woman greets. She seems a little hesitant to approach. The two kids by her side were clearly upset. The oldest is only about ten years old. And clearly not afraid to voice his opinions.

“Mom we can't leave. Puppy will be upset if we leave.” The kid starts crying. “We can't leave puppy behind.”

Clearly confused Newgate looks to the adults for clarification. Most Tenryuubito found animals to be too disgusting and unclean to keep pets. Instead keeping a few select humans as companions instead. Though according to the elders they willingly chose to. He doubted it, it's hardly a choice if the other option is death.(Pets were usually pulled from only the most desperate groups after all.) This branch of the Donquixote however were a tad different.

“I'm sorry Doflamingo,” the uncle says, clearly upset by the display. “Puppy can only be kept by those in Mary Geoise. Since you are relocating she can't follow. I promise I'll take good care of her.” The adults share a look between them. Doubt radiates from the woman as she huffs.

“I have no problem bringing a dog along with us. I intend, since there are kids, to have you stay at the Marine base with me for a few years.” Newgate offers, hoping it was an actual dog. If it was a person there'd be issues. “It's one of the lesser occupied bases, G-2 in Paradise close to the Lulusia Kingdom where you will eventually settle.”

“Ah, unfortunately puppy isn't an actual dog. Though it'd be easier if she was.” Mjosgard answers. “She is one of the human companions given to my nephews to keep them company. Though she is more of a cat than a dog.”

Newgate takes a few deep breaths. The elders might forgive him for wiping out a branch they consider weak but the destruction he'd do if he accidentally used quake in the Holy City might not be. How do they call him humble when he can casually refer to a human as an animal is beyond him.

He feels a tug at his leg and looks down to see the youngest child, Rosinante looking up at him. He lets the three adults fight as he kneels down and picks up the kid. The kid who leans close to whisper in his ear.

“Puppy is actually Tsukari or TsuTsu and she gets really upset when she can't find us. Is there any way she can follow? I don't want her to worry.” The kid honestly sounds so sad and worried.

“Afraid not little one. Humans aren't pets once you leave here. She wouldn't have the protection it offers.” He answers honestly and immediately feels guilty as the kid starts crying.

“But you never take care of puppy!” The oldest kid’s shout silences the adults. “She always has to get her own food and only stays away because you clearly don't like her. But puppy is ours and I refuse to leave her. She'll…she'll…” tears start pouring out.

“She'll get so worried about us. And hurt herself looking and looking and looking like last time.” Both the kids are full on crying now. “We're her little sheepies. And good little sheepies don't leave the pen without their puppy to guard them.”

“So it's the G-2 base near the Lulusia Kingdom you said.” The woman gives him an apologetic look. He nods in answer, clearly confused again. “Good. It seems I forgot something. I'll be right back.” She strides off towards the mansion, her rage obvious in the steps though hidden from her face.

She returns a few seconds later. A small female child, around her oldest's age in tow. The tiny thing clearly a fruit user given the obviously visible ears and tail, the wings though clearly making it a mythical type. Like the two boys she was also crying.

“You're taking my sheepies away.” It wasn't a question. “Please take good care of them. Rosi is a bit of a walking disaster but he's so sweet and quiet. Dofi means well but he's not good with the communication thing yet.” She pats each of their heads and tucks them under her wings.

“Dofi likes seafood, fresh is best and Rosi likes Umiboshi or anything with cabbage.” She informs him, serious for a ten year old. “I'll trust you with them but you better take care of them. They are my sheepies and mine only.”

“I'll take good care of your little charges.” He promises. Clearly there was something more here. She gives him a firm nod and a wide fanged smile in response.

“Good cause they'll need it. I've tried soooooooo hard but they still can't people well. They try but Dofi only knows how to growl even when he wants to purr and Rosi couldn't win a fight with a cooked fish to save his soul.” She informed him, clearly serious. “So please be patient. They are trying their best.”

The two men look absolutely confused. The woman, Materia, looks so smug. Clearly there is more at play. Definitely more at play given that the sniffling died down the moment she showed up and tucked them away.

“I will.” He promises.

“Good. G-2 is a good start. Less crowded but close to others for practice. Keep big Sheep close, he can't be trusted around others yet.” Clearly she means Homing given his reaction. “Momma ram is the best though. Very protective, kinda familiar with how people work though it's been awhile.”

“Glad you approve, I'll keep that in mind.” He answers automatically. Nothing about this situation makes any sense. She slowly parts from the two boys, ruffling hair and leaning in to whisper something before taking off. Wings for more than just show.

The two boys look somewhat less distraught than before. He hopes whatever promises the kid made could be kept. Only the elders have the ability to free these human pets. If she ever did earn it he'd gladly take her in. There was always room for more family.

He scooped the two boys up and carried them to the ship. Rosinante clearly excited by the new vantage point. Doflamingo seemed less excited but didn't protest.

“Is this why puppy always perches on high things?” The youngest asks excitedly.

“The view is much better.” The oldest says quietly. “Maybe we should start as well?”

“Not without supervision.” Their mother replies quickly. “She'd get very upset if you get hurt.” The two kids agree.

Getting them on the ship was easy. The new sights distract them from everything going on. Leaving was slightly more difficult. They insist on lingering hoping that Tsukari would sneak on board. After about an hour of trying to calm them down he manages to leave.

The captain of the ship did report seeing something suspicious circling overhead. A concerningly large bird like shadow was spotted on the water but wasn't visible for long. Perhaps puppy might follow after all.

Dinner was an interesting affair. Homing himself seemed eager to learn from the crew members everything he could. Unfortunately the girl was right, he had a tendency to put his foot in his mouth. Clearly the man needed more supervision. His wife was far better at handling the crew. Unfortunately she has her hands full with the kids.

Doflamingo himself seemed to be trying. Though he was quite snappy and demanding at times. His brother seemed used to it though. Often getting what he wanted before he could ask. When he didn't it did cause some conflict with the crew.

Getting them to eat was surprisingly difficult. It wasn't so much that they wouldn't eat but insisted on trying to sneak food to the rooms. Both the chef and Newgate tried to reassure them that all they needed to do was ask and there'd be food available.

“We understand that the chef would make us more.” Rosinante stated clearly despite being young.

“But tuna is puppy's favorite and we always save her some.” Doflamingo whined.

“Surely it wouldn't cause much trouble to allow it once Admiral. She never wastes food so once they see no one took it they'll stop.” Their mother pleads, something hidden in her eyes.

“If we don't leave food for puppy then she'll think we don't want her anymore.” Rosinante starts crying.

“We promised her she wouldn't have to feed herself anymore. That we'd share anything we had if possible.” It was Doflamingo's turn to get watery eyed.

Newgate was five seconds from giving in. The chef, Pierre long past caving. Though much like the captain he also had some suspicions if his look was anything to go by. Thankfully, or rather helpfully, Homing chose that moment to eat his foot.

“Now, now my sons Puppy will be fine. Your uncle promised to take care of her, didn't he?” the man tries to placate them. His wife clearly didn't approve of the method.

“He never takes care of puppy.” His oldest suddenly snaps. “Not before when she first arrived. Not after she started getting so small and weak and definitely not after she helped him otherwise we wouldn't have had to sneak food all the time.”

“Yeah she got soooo bad.” The youngest started whimpering.

“Don't worry. Mjosgard will take good care of her.” He tries again.

“HE'S THE REASON WE ALMOST LOST HER THE FIRST TIME!!’’ The oldest shouts, almost hysterical. “She's our puppy and we're her sheepies and she shouldn't have been left. She's going to be so worried.” The tears start falling in sheets and his mother goes to scoop him up only to be rejected. Plates forgotten, they scurry off to their room.

“We are going to have to talk later. I have a feeling I'm missing something important. Pierre I'm so sorry about the waste. Let me go talk to the kids.” Newgate sighs, so much trouble.

“Understood admiral.” The two former Dragons echo, then retreat towards his office.

“It's no worries. I have a feeling there is more at work here.” The man's expression grows fond. “Depending on how long she's been there, they might be family.”

“Unfortunately I'm thinking the same thing. Though why she's closer to the kids than the parents concerns me.” Newgate confesses with a sigh. “This isn't going to be easy.”

“I know you never expected it to be Admiral.” The man laughs and leaves, taking the plates. “Tuna is fairly cheap in these seas. I'll leave a few pieces out tonight and tomorrow and see.”

“Maybe some bagged snacks would be a nice compromise. Then the kids will eat something while avoiding the adults.” the admiral mutters to himself. He knows they stock fish jerky for emergencies. Maybe that'll be close enough.

Sniffles could be heard through the door. The kids no doubt still just as upset. As much as he needed to have this talk, he didn't want to spook the kids. Gently as someone of his build could be, he knocked on the door. There were some muffled words in response. Hesitantly he entered.

“Here to tell us to trust uncle?” The oldest managed to hiss out, eyes a puffy red from crying.

“Be nice Dofi.” The youngest squeaks. “Tsu told us to try didn't she.”

“Yeah but that was before Dad gave her to uncle.” He muttered from his spot under the bed.

“She'll be ok for a bit. She knows how to get into the fridge now and that she can.” the other responds from on top of the bed.

“Mom let her in the fridge though. Clive kept banning her, remember..” He countered. Both kids content to ignore him for the moment.

“But she can fish right?” The youngest asked, more conflicted now.

“Yeah but still. We promised” The older one whispers.

“I'm sorry to bother you little ones. But can I ask you something?” He settles down in the corner farthest from them. His only real option for trying to be nonthreatening.

“You can but I might not answer.” Doflamingo grumbles retreating further under the bed. The only real sign he was there was the reflection of his sunglasses.

“Dofi please. She asked him to take care of us.” Rosinante tried to keep the peace. Their eyes still full of tears.

“Doesn't mean I have to make it easy.” He snaps.

“Rosinante you wanna come here and tell me about Tsukari?” He asks. Clearly the youngest was the best choice. An angry growl could be heard from under the bed.

“I'll stay here thanks. Dofi sometimes bites when he's mad. It's a TsuTsu trait.” That earns him a sad smile. “She felt bad that we picked it up but she wasn't good with words before momma helped.”

“Words don't work.” The oldest mumbles. “Too many different meanings in one sentence.”

“Is that so?” Maybe that's the problem. They didn't understand something the adults said or did.

“They do Dofi. It's just adults that don't.” Once again Rosinante was being a life saver. Carrying the conversation where he needed.

“Well dad said the whole family was moving.” The kid sounds far too bitter and betrayed over a simple misunderstanding. “But he's leaving puppy behind like she's one of the other families slaves.”

“Remember. Puppy said that we're family to her.” The youngest started tearing up again.

“Yeah and she's our family. So she should be here.” He confirmed.

“But Dad told the others he's moving HIS family elsewhere.” The emphasis he put on “his” was no doubt the source of the misunderstanding then. Something confirmed when the oldest peeked out from his hiding spot.

“Puppy isn't considered part of Dad's family group.” He whispers, still heavy with betrayal. “Puppy was only ever in our group.”

“Exactly. He never meant to bring her.” Rosinante whines.

“Puppy was always uncle's. She just likes us more so she should be here” he countered again. “She'll get lonely otherwise. And she hates being alone.”

“But she can't follow us yet. Or maybe ever cause she's uncle's.” The youngest starts crying again.

“She will. Cause she needs food. Uncle won't remember to give her any.” The oldest joins in. “And she won't take it without permission.

Newgate gives up on not spooking the kids. These kids needed comfort quick. And he unfortunately needed honest answers only the kids could give. He gently scruffs both kids and drops them in the pockets inside his jacket.

It seems to help. Both kids settle down into the bottom and tears slow down. He'll give them a few minutes before trying again. Once they’ve completely settled he'll try an olive branch.

“Since Pierre was worried about the fish spoiling, might I offer some smoked tuna jerky instead?” He offers. “It's not the most satisfying thing to snack on texture wise but it tastes good.”

The oldest just looks up at him in shock. The youngest having cried himself to sleep. Maybe things might be better this way.

“That might work. Fish is her favorite regardless of how it's done.” He answers hesitantly.

“Good. I'll have him bring up a box. You can hide it under the bed if you'd like.” Gently he ruffles the kids hair with a finger. Somehow he could tell the kid was glaring at him, offended.

“Puppy deserves nice things.” He whispers after a few minutes. “She didn't have them before. Didn't have much before. Not even family.”

“Really now?” Maybe they could tell him something and he could also avoid the adults.

“Yeah. She wouldn't tell us much, but we could tell.” He mumbles sleepily.

“How so?” Just a little more child.

“Comments. Behavior. She won't eat anything without permission. Was always surprised by things in the beginning.” His words were slurring with sleep. “Always shocked whenwewantedtobeclose.” The last bit was almost unintelligible.

He stayed there with the kids for awhile. They seemed to need the closeness. He'd talk to the parents later. After a few drinks ideally. He gently gets to his feet, arms moving to support the kids and goes to talk to Pierre.

It was Rosinante this time who got his attention. He moves the kid from his pocket to the crook of his arm. Much better for a walking conversation.

“Tsu is a marine you know.” He says around a yawn. “Mink, the guys in the masks and all white told me one day.”

Ageris 0 was an interesting branch in Cypherpole. The only real group aside from the elders to work directly with the Tenryuubito. They were a mysterious bunch and an insanely secretive group. So it has to mean something that they told a kid this.

“Really. Did they say which branch?” He hoped he could help. Being an admiral did have it's benefits sometimes.

“He called her Chimera of CP-10. Said it to a little snail after he was done chasing us.” The kid was definitely still half asleep.

“A familiar group. Why was he chasing you?” They also work with Tenryuubito but unlike Ageris 0 nothing was really known, just rumors. A dime a dozen with a million different jobs that seemed unrelated to each other.

“Cause we found her passed out and needed help.” He answered. “Mom always calls Mink for help. But he's only been helping mom since puppy came.”

“So you asked him to?” Something was missing.

“Nope.” The kid smiled. “You don't ask they… they just…they, oh how'd puppy say it. Int….inte…intv..only when it's important.”

“So how'd you get them to think it was important.” He asked, legitimately curious.

“Puppy is protective. Bites and growls when people get too close. So we decided to try and pester someone.” The kid started. “We bothered soooooo many people until he noticed puppy wasn't stopping us. Once he approached we ran. Led him to puppy.”

“So mink stays hidden until something happens then does something.” He summarized. “So you did something off so he'd notice and made him chase you.”

“Yup. Straight to a puppy who was thin and weak and had been for a looooooong time. But now she wasn't answering this time.” He started shaking again, eyes watery. “Even Mink who never worries was worrying. So he told the little snail that Chimera was down and needed help.”

“And he told you she was CP-10?” Why would he do that.

“I don't think he meant to but Dofi bit him hard for calling her by something not her name.” The kid half laughs. “Had to explain she's Chimera like he's Mink and he refused to call her puppy.”

“Really now? You kids are something. Do you know what happened?” He had an idea but needed to confirm. No doubt it scared them bad enough to have them insisting on hoarding food. And it was definitely building up to hoarding.

“Puppy had been with us a year at that point.” The tears were back again. “Me and Dofi had just started getting her to do something other than perch and glare at people. She'd started slinking up to us instead of hiding like Mink, giving out head pats and sleeping in the same bed.”

The kid stopped and reached over to poke at Dofi until he woke up. This earned him short glare and a huff of displeasure.

“You remember better. Tell him about Mink and the thing about food.” The youngest pleads.

“What's there to explain? Uncle was given Puppy so he could maybe learn to be like father but failed. Because of this puppy got sick and had to see a medic and I had to bite Mink HARD to get answers cause they were taking puppy away.” If he was older WhiteBeard would describe him as radiating killing intent. As it was for his sanity he'd call it extreme adult rage. “Mink said that what Badger meant was that puppy wasn't getting enough food and needed help.”

The kid paused again to breathe, clearly debating on if he should continue. Rosinante nudged him again trying to glare him into submission. Then a clearly mischievous grin took over.

“Boss says he'll let us stash tuna jerky like Mink used to sneak puppy under the bed if we say why.” The kid sort of lied to his brother. “Said Mr. Chef didn't want to make her sick with bad fish. But it has to be imp..important.”

“Fine. If it'll let us keep food close.” The kid huffs but relents. “After puppy got back a really really old important guy came over. He yelled at uncle a lot according to the maid. She'd never heard someone like us get in trouble before. But she'd never met puppy.”

“The maid told the cook that you could hear them three rooms down. Apparently the little doll was actually a marine pet.” The look of disgust on the kid's face was concerning. “That the elders thought the Lords were too cruel and wanted to test if they still felt emp…em..if they could be people. Uncle couldn't because he didn't bother to feed her and the cook said he was ordered not to.”

The kids shared a look. Doflamingo clearly wanted to stop. Rosinante silently urging him to continue. The youngest won that battle. Mad about it, or the topic, he continues.

“Maid went on to say mean things about how puppy deserved it. How strays shouldn't be allowed near royalty and all the other stuff father hates but allowed anyway.” He was once again radiating a child's equivalent of killing intent. “Then the cook agreed. Despite the fact that puppy was catching him fish and tending the secret garden. That she'd dive into the sea water though Mink said it wasn't safe and bring him back the tasty rock looking things. And he put the stupid lock on the fridge.”

“Mom kept having it removed but father let him put it back. He always did, saying it was his kitchen and his choice.” Rosi added on. “we caught the maids getting mad at her for accepting an apple from Mink. But they'd only coo about how adorable we were for trying to feed strays if they caught us and call her a good pet for accepting but take the stuff away.”

“So we started stashing extras in the room and giving it to her. She didn't want to at first but Rosi started crying about the incident and she caved.” Dofi continued. “Mink must've caught on cause we started seeing her around with these kinda weird tasting fish things all the time. She started sharing after we asked what it was, cause it's what pack does.”

“So if family shares things it's only fair we share.” Rosi piped in. “So we'd hide in the garden and snack on tough spicy fish leather while she taught us how to fish using bones in the koi pond or practiced tracking in the garden. And at night we'd sneak plates out of the kitchen cause no one but puppy told us no.”

“Can we keep them stashed please?” They both ask in unison. “We don't want her to get sick again.”

“Fine. Go ahead.” He'd already decided yes before. If he hadn't it would've changed. These kids. Hopefully she was a CP member. That meant he could work something out. The kids were excited but quiet.

“One more question then. Do you know why they called her Chimera?” The kids definitely knew more than they should.

“It's cause she ate a funny fruit. She wouldn't share too much cause it'd upset us, but it's a fruit called something model Chimera and it let's her take on various animal treats(?)....no…ah traits. So like a birds wings, a dogs paws or snakes teeth all at the same time. She usually only did paws and ears, and teef…” Dofi tried to explain snapping his jaws a few times. “..but after she saw Rosinante crying cause the other kids were mean she kinda scooped him in them and it was so effective she kept them.”

“Ah I see then.” He really didn't. Not fully but maybe the adults could help. Or a dreaded call to to the commander in Chief. They over saw all that chaos “Thank you. Now it's past your bedtime so I should probably return you now.”

“Fine. But I kinda need something first.” The oldest asks, cheeks almost as pink as his brother's eyes.

“Ooh is it about what puppy told us.” The youngest asks excitedly.

“Sure. If you'll tell me what puppy said.” He was not above bartering with the kids to get answers. He'd make up for the perceived slight later.

“Thing first. Cause you might not like the answer.” The youngest wisely negotiates.

“Sure. And I promise I won't.” The kids clearly didn't trust him. Both of them glaring at him before wiggling to escape. He sat them down and followed them to where the adults were staying next door. Satisfied they walked in, grabbed a smaller bag and took it to their room.

Inside the bag was a rather large and heavy looking black fur throw. He couldn't exactly place the animal which concerned him. Tucked in the center was a record dial. Odd.

The two kids sat down clearly familiar with the item and let it play.

Puppy:Ok my little sheepies things are gonna be tough again. But don't worry Mink says the admiral is super nice and to trust him. And I trust mink. I stashed our favorite fur inside the extra bag for you.

*Vague cursing and banging going on*

Puppy: Mink says that you'll probably be leaving tomorrow but I can't cause I'm technically your uncle's so it'll be a little bit. Things are gonna be really hard

*Louder banging and clashes with scattered bits of screaming*

Puppy: sorry Mink is really upset. Like crazy upset. He liked you guys. Anyway. I know you don't want to be alone but you have each other. Besides I'll follow when I can. Mjosgard never noticed me to begin with and is too afraid of getting in trouble again to report. But first you gotta learn to people.

*More rage filled screaming and violent crashing*

Puppy: he's really not happy. The talk with Alpha went bad. Like really really bad. So you gotta be people. Real actual solid people, not the fake detached noble like your father. You sheepies can't be sheepies anymore. You gotta become cats n dogs n wolves n things. Big Sheep decided he wanted to go down the mountain and see the world. But you can't just see. You gotta experience it. So go down there, you already can't return so why not indulge in everything anyway.

*Glass shattering and pain filled hissing*

Puppy: gotta go Mink is being stupid but now it's the dangerous stupid

“What did she tell you?” WhiteBeard asks once the recording ends.

“She told us to go ahead and fall apart.” Rosi said, pulling part of the throw closer. “To go ahead and fall.”

“And that we'd rise again.” Dofi finished, joining his brother under the fur. “And that she'd join us when she can.”

Newgate tucked that information away for later. For now he gently readjusted the kids and tucked them in. The fur throw was heavier than expected but insanely soft. And clearly very important given the way the two half asleep kids clung to it as he attempted to adjust it. A question for tomorrow then.

                       *************************

The talk with the parents didn't help at all. It seems that for all that the Marines praised Homing for his humble nature he was still a Tenryuubito. The man had next to no understanding of his kids. Or their relationship with their glorified babysitter. His wife Materia was slightly more helpful but had no idea what caused them to bond so tightly.

Edward Newgate, holder of the Quake fruit, Admiral and beloved hero could only come to one conclusion. A humble Tenryuubito was just a slightly less pompous high lord. The man was going to drive him nuts before the year was out. His only goal at this point was to help the kids. If he could get them to fourteen they could officially join the Marines and he'd be done with it.

Unfortunately for him that meant putting up with Homing for at least six years. Granted he could make it two for acclimation and let them Iive with the king of nearby Lulusia but he wasn't sure. Those kids would be an easy target for any bitter citizen to grab. Resigned and bitter about the situation he left to talk to Pierre.

The man was clearly a mind reader and a saint. Sitting at the table next to the breakfast that was almost done was three boxes of emergency rations in fish jerky format. It was a fairly good mix of salmon, Tuna and whitefish and the boxes were still sealed and untouched.

“Left out some tuna sashimi last night.” The cook stated not bothering to look up from the pan. “Got a visit from the world's weirdest looking pelican. And a visit from an equally unexpected transfer, meet Tachi.”

An unfamiliar figure approaches the group. His dusty clay colored hair is short and held back by a blue bandana that is just a few shades darker than his eyes. The shirt sleeves show off his rather toned arms that are littered with long scars, most likely from a sword or several of them. Something in Newgate's finely honed instincts tells him to pay close attention.

“Apparently she has the Fusion beast fruit Model Chimera, well according to miss Materia.” Newgate informs him. “The other pet had the Sphinx model. Kid has to blend at least three animal types to use it so I can only imagine how odd that pelican was.”

“Those of us stationed in Mary Geoise are well used to her antics and forms.” The new crew member laughs. “Though the pelican is new. I believe she called it the Chimera fruit, a special Paramecia type.”

“It was interesting, mainly the little feather tufts on it's head and neck. Apparently it's unsafe to fly long distances without gills present.” The chef commented not so subtly as he slides him a cup of coffee. “She did however approve of the pocket method whatever that was and dropped the better part of a sea king and some fresh clams on the roof in thanks. No clue how she caught it though.”

“Is that what the men were howling about this morning?” He asks between sips of coffee. “The rain of seafood and the night watch's near death experience.”

“It was a big sea king. Easily three times the size of this boat.” The chef, actually looking away from his stove, comments. No doubt to judge his reaction. The transfer was losing it in the back corner. The kids study him closely. “The fridge and freezer are overflowing now. She was kind enough to clean it first though I don't know where it's pelt is. Based on bone structure it definitely should've had a feathered skin.”

“No doubt a gift for future good behavior.” Newgate laughs. “This kid is interesting. Heard back from command that yes she is technically a Marine but a Cypherpole one.”

“Too bad. It'd be nice to have her around. Not just for fishing.” Pierre sighs. “Those kids are going through too much at once. It's like they left a sibling behind.”

Newgate chokes on his coffee at that. That would explain everyone's behavior nicely. The boys leaving behind an older, if technically younger, sibling and Materia a daughter figure. Homing's general placé attitude since he hadn't bonded with her just salting the wound.

He pays close attention to the new guy. He wasn't told anything about picking up a new member from there. However, if one of their guards decided to shadow them for a few days he wouldn't argue.

“That's no quite it.” A small voice whispers as it joins them. The oldest dragging his half asleep brother behind him. “Puppy isn't a sibling. She's kind of a mentor. Not parent, the other term.”

“Guardian?” Pierre asks.

“Not quite that. Said that if we were proper Gods we were supposed to have one.” The kid was obviously thinking hard, trying to remember. “Something about messengers and omens. Witches have them too…I think. It's been years.”

“A familiar.” The sleepy youngest adds. “She was a familiar. Supposed to teach us about being people while we taught her manners n other useless things.”

The two adults just raise an eyebrow at that. Clearly they weren't quite remembering right. Well hopefully not. The new man, Itachi just smiles at them and motions to the seats. The boys settle in, though there are a few odd looks his way.

“I like guardian better anyway.” The oldest huffs. “It's probably more accurate.”

“Yeah. Though sibling is nice.” The youngest agrees happily. “No idea why she refused to use it. She was all happy and tail waggy when we said it but then avoided us for daaaaaaays after.”

The oldest looks like he wanted to say something but stops. His head whipping towards the door as he starts to panic.

“Father is awake. I can hear him singing.” He whispers.

“Don't worry. I hid the coat in a pillowcase under the bed.” The youngest whispers back. The oldest relaxes at that. Interesting.

“Good. He never did like it.” Doflamingo murmurs.

“Cause it's super fancy according to the maids. Not everyone can fish like puppy can. Don't know it's technically scraps to her.” Rosinante smiles.

“How's it fancy but also scraps?” Pierre couldn't help but ask.

“Oh. That's easy. Puppy fishes for food but Kings have good thick skin.” Doflamingo starts explaining excitedly. “Since food is the main goal, the skin is just a bonus part.”

“Puppy doesn't like to waste but it couldn't be eaten. So when I accidentally caught her and told her how pretty it was she said she'd try to save it.” Rosinante continues. “A few weeks later she gave us the coat.”

“So that's where it went.” The transfer mumbles. “She kept hanging it to dry on the northern tower's roof much to the elders' dismay. Saint Marville kept complaining about the smell ruining his garden.”

“Father doesn't believe in keeping fancy things so he kept trying to get rid of it.” All excitement left the two kids. “But according to puppy it doesn't count.”

“You see it wasn't bought with gold but with iron so it shouldn't count right?” The two kids asked them.

The two adults share another look. How did this man not realize his kids were getting gifts from their guardian. That this other child was teaching them how to be human under his nose. Itachi once again laughs and passes the kids two plates of food.

“I know it's not as fancy as back home.” He warns them as he sets them down. “However, I know she's been teaching you about other options.”

“No it shouldn't.” Pierre thankfully answers them as he hands them their drinks. “What else did your puppy give or teach you?”

The kids smile at this and spend the next two hours telling them all they could remember from their guardian's lessons. The adults learn about the difference between the gold price and iron price. The rules of fang and claw as well as scythe and grain. The kids show them how to make a passable fishing hook using bones and how to carve a spear using stones and branches. It was a little concerning.

“She taught us the spear thing after the weird guys showed up.” The oldest starts. “It was in the beginning when we didn't really acknowledge her. They crept in the window and grabbed us.”

“Puppy was furious but soooooo tiny then. It didn't stop her though. Her teeth are sharp.” The youngest continues, a pattern for them apparently. “It's the first time we saw Mink too.”

Newgate makes a note of the way Tachi twitches at that. It's subtle and quickly covered up by a proud smile. It takes everything in him to stifle a coo. Looks like at least of of their guards followed them down

“She started teaching us things after.” Dofi finishes. “All these neat little lessons about how to survive if something happens.”

“She started calling us her little Sheepies after that night. Said good sheeps stay in their pens and out of trouble.” Rosi says with a smile. “Cause that makes it easier for the puppy to guard them.”

“Really now. Is that why she's Puppy to you?” Newgate asks, things finally making sense.

“Yup. She's puppy unless we escape and wallow in the muck and Mire enough to lose our wool and become doggies too.” Doflamingo says with a slightly too sharp grin. “Father and uncle never would've let us before though.”

“It's why we can't be siblings. Sheepies and puppies aren't siblings.” Rosi starts tearing up.

“But we can now. And we'll become doggies and puppy can show us how.” The oldest says, full of conviction. Tachi looks so proud and relieved.

“Perhaps we can get you started. Though it may take time.” Newgate offers, hopefully he can point them towards a good path early. “It takes time to lose your wool. I'd think she'd rather it be done gently.”

The kids nod in agreement. Good first step done. Mission Understand the kids was complete. He currently has two ex-Tenryuubito pups who trauma bonded with a very young Cypherpole agent desperate to get her back. He also has a clearly very traumatized Cypherpole agent stalking his ship to ensure these kids were safe and a younger one no doubt planning repeat visits. That isn't something he can fix so he'll adapt instead.

The next step is gently introduce them to other kids. Thankfully his usual base is full of families. And the kids seem willing to learn. Even if it's only so they can get their puppy back. It's not a healthy or ideal approach but it's a start so he'll take it.

He watches in mild concern as the parents enter the room and the kids immediately quiet down. Tachi looks torn between staying and hiding. Staying wins out.

There is no real interaction between the four but it's obvious everyone is tense. It's as the kids quickly finish and go to leave that it snaps.

“You do know that even if she does follow you can't keep her right? People aren't something that can be kept.” Homing says quietly.

“If she follows on her own it means she wants to be kept. To be ours.” The oldest child counters.

“Doffy that's not…” his mother starts but stops. Because honestly that is how it works. “We'll discuss it if she follows.”

“Don't make empty promises dear.” Homing looks towards his wife. “We both know how things were. Regardless, there wasn't much choice in the matter. That she might not want to.”

“Dear you know how close..” she tries to argue. Tachi looks seconds from murder as he moves closer to the pair. Pierre grabs his arm before he can do something stupid.

“For them it was a fun game. But for her it was survival.” He interrupts, unaware it seems like, of the tiny children listening to him.

Any further argument was stopped by the sounds of wood scraping across tile. Both kids thanking Pierre for the food before scurrying away.

And oh how that had to sting. For the kids to hear such things. A truth he considered but he has a freezer full of sea king and a fridge full of clams that say otherwise. A smuggled blanket made of scrap leather as a promise. A few boxes of rations stashed in response.

He watches but doesn't say anything as the new transfer slips by to follow the kids. He can see the look of determination in his eyes and feel the protective instincts surging. Homing gives him an odd look but Materia quickly distracts him. Newgate takes note of the mouthed thank you in Tachi's direction after.

The next two weeks were stressful. The Homing was harassing him nonstop for the kids' location. And the kids were doing their best to avoid being found. Neither of the two bothered returning to the kitchen for meals. None of them benefiting from their puppy's hunt. Well not obviously. Pierre did let him know Tachi kept leaving with plates piled high with food and returning with empty ones every so often.

Instead Doflamingo has taken to perching on the edge of one of the training decks overlooking the main deck. A few packages of tuna jerky in his pockets. If Rosinante wasn't with him, the youngest was usually trailing after the crew asking a million questions without care. Sometimes he could convince his brother to follow, but it was rare unless Tachi was involved.

Their shadow showed up one last time around four days from the city. She dropped off a massive feathered pelt that weighed a ton and said to give it to them after they landed. Apparently she was afraid it'd be taken away or intentionally left behind. It took several hours for her to believe he'd actually return it. Even then he had to admit he lived at the base so it couldn't be left behind. He smiles at the sight of jerky in her pockets.

The next day had a plethora of rare vegetables and fruits sitting on top of the ship. It also had a roughly written note about watching her sheepies closely. That they didn't like to sleep alone and could have her gift early if that was the case.

It was during the last week that he understood why. Homing had found their little pelt, having snuck in while they were asleep under it. There was another fight between him and Doflamingo that resulted in Newgate agreeing to hold onto the thing for now. (It became harder to find the kids after, though Tachi did let Pierre know where they were.)

It was Captain Vista who came to him after the third night. The kids refused to sleep in their room and had moved the rations and themselves into the main bunk with the rest of the crew.

“Doflamingo refuses to sleep and Rosinante is constantly woken by nightmares.” The man explains, concern evident. “Maybe it's just the stress but it isn't healthy.”

“Don't tell their parents but send them into my office.” He answers. “Maybe letting them nap under the throw will help?”

“Hopefully.” The captain laughs. “They are kinda mad at you and you're the only one that could possibly nest them like Thatch saw her do.”

“Ah. I'd forgotten about that.” He looks down at the box next to his desk. Maybe this counts as an emergency. “She did give me a rather large feathered blanket during her last visit. Heavy too.”

“So let the damned chicks nest then.” The man snaps. “These poor kids have been freaking out while you've been sitting on an answer this whole time.”

“Calm down captain.” Tachi huffs out. His presence wasn't really a surprise. “It's not like he had any idea.”

“I'd actually have to know what made them bond like this in order to know it was the answer.” He snaps back. “As it stands the kids were avoiding me too.”

“Ok fair.” Vista concedes. “I'll send them up. They also need to eat more than jerky. Kids haven't touched the real food since the fight in the kitchen.”

“Fuck. That was over two weeks ago.” He mutters.

“Not true.” Tachi bristles in offense. “I've been sneaking them a few things here and there. They just don't want to be easily cornered is all.”

“Exactly. Bribe them with the gifts, feed them then put them down for a nap.” The man stands up to leave. “Also Materia might actually end up divorced over this. Once she realizes it's an option.”

“If only.” The admiral grumbles. “Unfortunately that's not an option.”

“Oh no, it is.” Tachi perks up at the thought. “Tenryuubito can't but since Homing waved all those rights and times away Materia can do as she pleases now.”

The captain laughs as he leaves. Promising to send the kids up and bring food. It only takes a few minutes for the kids to arrive, escorted by Pierre. It hurt a little, seeing Doflamingo move to guard his younger brother at the sight of him.

“I'll make you a deal,” he starts, Pierre glaring holes in his head. “..if you each eat a plate of something other than jerky I'll let you use the office as a safe space and give you your puppy's final gift, for the moment.”

Both the kids and the chef perk up at this. The oldest kid relaxing some but still wary. They both glance to who he's certain is their ex guard then both kids nod in agreement. Taking the tray from Pierre and sitting in the corner to eat. Both startle when another person enters.

“I brought the requested items Admiral.” Vice captain Izou states politely. “Finally nesting the ankle biters then.” He drops a pile of assorted bedding and pillows in the middle of the room. The kids eyes zero in on the throw hidden in the mess.

“Thank you Izou. I'm thinking of giving them the thing early so they'll stop terrorizing the crew.” He responds dryly.

“Hah, we both know you're worried about them. Having to play the bad guy so we'd get some peace is a noble sacrifice.” They smile. “The kids are no problem. The adults however are. I'm not fully informed on the dynamic but you'd think Homing left another kid behind with the way Momma Ram was behaving.” With that Izou left the room.

“Ok so I'm missing a lot of things.” Pierre stated. Earning him a half hearted glare from Newgate.

“I'll explain a bit of it later.” Tachi promises

“Are we allowed to use all this?” Rosinante asks.

“Yes. Vista snitched so I know you haven't been sleeping well.” He starts. “Your puppy during her last visit left you something. Wasn't supposed to give it to you yet but…”

“Puppy left us something other than food?” Doflamingo asks, perking up but still subdued. No doubt exhausted.

“Finish up and I'll show you.” Newgate quickly responds. “Rosinante, since you're done, let's get started on making the “nest” Izou mentioned.”

“No one ever comes in here without permission. My room and the bathroom are both through that door.” He scoots back from the desk letting the youngest Inspect the space. The massive piece of furniture had more than enough room for all three as well as almost an entire ship's worth of blankets and pillows. “So you should be able to eat and sleep in peace. And I'll be close by if anything happens.”

The kids had to be communicating telepathically. It is the only plausible reason for why Doflamingo suddenly scarfs down the food and starts dragging bedding under the desk. The last piece in was the fur pelt throw that had been confiscated. Once Pierre gives him the all clear on the food he slides the box closer.

Doflamingo pops out, like a cat in a box, and tries to grab it. He's unsuccessful due to the bulk but the attempt was cute. Laughing he opens it up and is rewarded with a gleeful gasp and the sight of Doflamingo dragging his brother over. They barely get the pink monster of a thing in there but it fits.

“I'll leave you to it then.” Pierre says with a knowing grin. “It'd be nice for Marco and the others to have more friends.”

Ignoring the old jab at his tendency to take on strays he went back to work. He told the kids no one would bother them. That includes him as well. Tachi smiles in approval before slipping out the door.

A tug on his pants had him looking down. Both of the little blond ankle biters looking up at him. Both radiating different levels of exhaustion.

“The deal is satisfactory.” The oldest declares before retreating. What?

“He means thank you but is not happy with the bribery.” The youngest explains. Oh.

“Necessary I'm afraid but not my idea.” He leans down to ruffle little heads with his pinky. “I'll keep a stash of jerky in the bottom drawer on the right but please eat actual food as well.”

“Agreeable.” The oldest says around a yawn. “Sleep now.”

“We don't like sleeping alone.” The youngest whispers. “Tsu always slept close to us after. Mink was there is Tsu wasn't.”

“Of course a puppy's best place is….” The oldest pauses, confidence draining. “A puppy can't dis..obey…..but…oh. Father is right….She couldn't… say…no. Not really could she?”

Shit. Nope. Nope.nopenopenope. Not what they need right now. Definitely not what they need.

“Little one, your father is many things but right isn't one of them.” He starts. “If your puppy didn't want to follow she wouldn't have given you the pelt. Instead she followed us for several days and dropped it off saying to give it to you once we arrived.”

“Really?” The youngest latched onto that. “She carried that after we left?”

“Exactly. You don't do something like that if you don't care.” Good. Focus on this. “Regardless of how it came to be, the relationship and emotions are real. You all three share a bond of some kind, willingly and happily tended. Don't let it fizzle out now.”

The kids look up at him, eyes full of hope, and he decides, Once again he'd be taking in more strays. Though these are less stray like.

The rest of the trip goes smoothly. The kids rarely leave his office, the parents lurk outside but don't dare enter. Homing had a few choice words about the situation but is quickly handled by his wife. A wife who seems content with the situation.

Tachi hovers around the kids for most of it. He actively avoids the adults. Or rather avoids being seen by the adults. Newgate makes plans to shake answers out of him eventually.
