Work Text:
Steve can see dead people and there’s this woman with curly hair and big smile who insists that he contacts her son.
Steve ignores her but after two weeks of annoying appearances in unusual situation (when he’s on the toilet) he gives in and asks for his name.
„The Rockstar?“
Yes, the mother of Eddie Munson, Rockstar and his former classmate, was begging for help. And she had the best timing.Eddie was supposed to perform in their hometown this weekend.
„Tell him he can stop looking, that‘s all!“
It didn’t make any sense but he learned to not ask questions.
When Eddie recognises Steve in the crowd he immediately waves his manager over who gives him a backstage pass. When they meet Eddie’s all sweaty and hot from his concert, Steve almost forgets why he came.
„Harrington? Did I see that right? What brings you here?“
Steve decides to make it short.
„I can see dead people and your mother has been annoying me for two weeks now, she needs to tell you something.“
Eddie almost punches him in the face by the mention of his beloved mother who died when he was a kid.
But then he remembers. In school Steve was a jock, he was popular and all BUT there was something weird about him. Little rumours everywhere saying he has a phobia of cemeteries, big crowds. Eddie even remembers a party where someone pulled out an Ouija board and Steve ran so fast out of that house he hit Eddie on the shoulder passing by. So maybe he was telling the truth? That sparked another question: why now?
„Eddie? Hey I know it sounds crazy and you don’t have to believe me but“
„I believe you.“
„Really?“
„Kind of. Only a Munson could be that stubborn even in the afterlife.“
Weeks go by, Steve and Eddie talk a lot, they text and call each other. Sometimes Eddie makes room for a small coffee date. Weird thing is, his mother never shows up. She only shows herself when Steve’s alone. He confronts but she just brushes him off and says: „I’m busy!“
„She’s busy? Are you fucking serious? What is she busy with? Rearranging clouds?“
„I don’t know man, she’s in general pretty weird. Loud, talks endlessly, and she uses her hands a lot. Reminds me..actually reminds me of you. You two seem to have a lot in common.“
He looks in those dark brown eyes and he catches a glimpse of joy, happiness even. In an act of kindness Steve takes Eddie’s hand in his and to his surprise Eddie doesn’t pull away, instead he tightens his grip. Their eyes meet again and Steve feels something grow in his chest. Then Eddie creeps closer and Steve is not sure what’s happening. That’s when the words slip out of his mouth.
„Oh god.“
Eddie stops in his movement, a confused look on his face.
„Shit, sorry. Shit! I thought you- I thought we had a moment and I wanted to..but you’re like totally not…shit! Sorry Steve!“
„No, no! No! Eddie that‘s not, that wasn’t- It just slipped out, I wasn’t-wait. Were you going to kiss me?“
„Well shit yeah. Would that be a bad idea?“
Steve tried to think of an answer but all he thought about was how Eddie’s lips would feel and that kind of answered that question.
„Not at all. You wanna try again? I can act surprised!”
Steve did such a good job that Eddie rewarded him with several more kisses.
“Finally!”
Steve screamed, then Eddie screamed, then Eddie’s mother screamed but only Steve could hear it.
“What’s happening?” Eddie asked, confused.
“Your mother is here.”
Instantly Eddie’s eyes lit up.
“Honey, can you tell my baby boy that I’m very proud of him and that I will always love him but it’s finally time to let go of this world.”
Steve told Eddie everything his mother has said.
“Why now? What changed? You haven’t even talked to me all this time!”
“Because you don’t need me anymore. I see what a good men you are every single day. What you do for others, but you never think about yourself. That’s why I had to come back, to give you what you deserve.”
Steve and Eddie looked at each other clueless.
“You two! I came back to get you two together! Jesus Christ, is that so hard to understand?! This means my job is done now. By the way I’m so happy for you two!”
A slight breeze tickled around Eddie’s neck when his mother said her final goodbye.
“So uhm, wanna go on a date with me?”
“Your mother just dropped a fucking bomb on us and your just- you know what, whatever. Yes, I wanna go on a date with you. But no place near a cemetery, retirement home or a hospital.”
“What about funeral homes?”
“Nah, they’re usual not dead long enough to show up.”
“Brutal.”
