Mixed Family

Summary:

Dick’s relationship with his father had been really bad since Jason died. He was mourning, he missed his little brother, but he refused to return to Gotham. It was like his relationship with his father was completely ruined. The only reason he returned was the new Robin. But the last straw was that Bruce made a big mistake during Tim’s training — one that could never be fixed — and he hurt Tim, whom Dick saw as his little brother, his own little bird. That day caused Bruce to have a terrible breakdown and to stay under the League’s supervision for months. But at the same time, he also took away Robin’s right to be called Robin by any of his partners. Dick left town with the little bird he had newly adopted and only came to the city for emergencies, but he was done with Batman. This wouldn’t change when Little Wing came back or when his father found a new partner

Chapter Text

Bruce was thrown backward by the punch he took.

Dick was standing over him. His face was purple with anger.

He was punching Bruce over and over again.

Bruce didn’t even fight back. He knew he deserved it.

Tim was in the hospital wing because of him right now. He definitely deserved it.

Just as Dick was about to hit him again, a voice said, “Young master, please stop. No matter how right you are, you’ll wake young master Timothy and frighten him.”

When he looked over, he saw Alfred. He had come from the infirmary.

Dick’s fist froze in the air. He took a deep breath to calm himself. Then, with an icy voice, he said, “Alfred, where are Tim’s things?”

Alfred said, “What? Young master—” but Dick interrupted, “I’m taking him and leaving.”

Alfred began, “Young master—”

But Dick cut him off: “Please, Alfred. Do as I say. I’m taking him out of Gotham. And I’ll never let B get near him again. You never did anything to help him before, and you don’t have to do anything now. I’m sorry, Alfred, but that goes for you too. I’m taking him out of Gotham,” he said harshly.

Alfred said, “I understand. I’ll start the preparations,” and bowed slightly with respect. Then he left.

Bruce started to say, “Dick—” but Dick interrupted him. “I’m leaving. I’m taking Tim with me. I’m done with you. I won’t come back. I’ll make sure you never get close to Tim again. Robin is finished. Forever. You want to take on an assistant? I don’t care, do whatever you want. I won’t let you ruin the name my mother gave me ever again. If you ever try to use that name for anyone again, I promise you, the whole world will know your true identity — and what you did to the last Robin. I promise you that,” he said.

Bruce froze and said, “Please, Dick.”

But Dick didn’t care. In an icy voice, he said, “Please! Tim begged like that when you beat him, didn’t he? You didn’t care, did you? Or were you so drunk you didn’t even notice?”

Bruce flinched. He began to back away.

Dick said angrily, “Get a grip on yourself. Or I’ll send you to Arkham myself.”

Bruce stayed silent.

Dick said angrily, “I called Uncle Clark. Until you get yourself together, the Batman mission will stay under supervision. I even called Uncle Oliver. Only they can straighten you out.”

Bruce lowered his head.

Dick was furious.

He went to the infirmary. “Timmy, time to wake up, baby. Come on, baby. You have to wake up,” he said softly.

Tim opened his eyes and blinked. He looked confused. Then, when he remembered what happened, he panicked.

Dick said, “Shhh. It’s okay. It’s okay. I’m here. You’ll be fine. I’m here. You’re safe. You’re safe.” He gently stroked his hair.

Tim had calmed down a little. As Dick relaxed, so did he. “Baby bird, we’re leaving this place,” Dick said. Tim looked surprised.

Dick said, “I want you to leave Gotham with me. I want to take you with me. If you’ll let me,” he paused. Then added, “I want to adopt you.”

Tim looked at him in surprise.

Dick said, “I know your previous family tried to let you down. I know what they did to you. I can’t even imagine what you went through on the streets, how scary it must have been. I know you lost your trust in adults. But I want to be there for you, to keep you safe. I don’t want you to go back to the streets again,” he said.

Tim said, “You want me? W-w-who would want me, especially like this?” and his eyes filled with tears.

Dick said, “Oh, baby. You’re perfect. You’ll always be, no matter what. You’re my most precious thing, and that will never change.”

Tim’s eyes widened in shock. Then he paused and quietly looked down at his own body.

Dick said, “I’ll do everything I can to make you better. I promise you. I’ll never stop trying. But even if I fail, it won’t be because I gave up on you. No matter what, I’ll never let you go,” and he pulled him into a gentle embrace.

Tim hesitated and said quietly, “I’d really like that.”

Dick’s eyes sparkled with happiness. He hugged him tightly. “Oh, baby, I promise I’ll never let you down,” he said, tears in his eyes.

---

When Tim fell asleep again, Dick called Wally.

D: Hey speed

W: Hey wing. Good to hear your voice.

D: You too. How are you?

W: I’m fine? Everything okay? You sound bad. What’s wrong?

D: Tim got hurt. I’m taking him out of Gotham. I want to get him away from the Bat.

W: What did that bastard do?

D: …

W: Wing. What did he do?

D: He almost killed him.

Curses could be heard from the other end of the line. Dick stayed silent. After a while, Wally calmed down.

W: What do you mean?

D: Not good. His life’s not in danger, but…

W: But what?

D: His spine’s injured.

A deep silence filled the line.

W: How bad?

D: Very. Probably permanent.

W: You said you’re leaving Gotham. Where will you stay?

D: Central City. That’s the plan. I don’t want him to be somewhere completely unfamiliar. Bart’s there too. And it’s definitely safer than here. And you’re there.

W: Really?

D: Yeah. Unless that bothers you.

W: Of course not. What about work?

D: I already handled that.

W: When are you leaving?

D: As soon as possible. We’ll go when preparations are done.

W: Do you have a place to stay?

D: I’ll check when I get there.

W: I’ve got a place big enough. If you need personal space, you can stay there until you find your own. It’ll be better for Tim too.

The line went silent for a while.

D: Thanks, speed.

W: Of course, wing. Anytime. I’ll handle the preparations here. Don’t worry.

D: Thank you. Really, thank you, speed.

W: Of course, wing. Don’t worry, everything will be okay.

After chatting a bit more, Dick ended the call. He felt relieved. He looked at sleeping Tim.

Tim looked exhausted.

Dick kissed him on the forehead.

After a while, Alfred returned with two bags.

Dick said, “Thank you, Alfred.”

Alfred said, “Of course, young master. Did you talk with young master Timothy?”

Dick said, “Yes. He agreed. We’ll leave as soon as preparations are done.”

Alfred said, “I understand. Do you need anything else?”

Dick shook his head. “Thank you, Alfred,” he said.
