Chapter 1: The Strange in the Unfamiliar (1)
Chapter Text
Kim Dokja blinks his eyes open, immediately gazing upon an unfamiliar ceiling. This is most definitely not his small apartment. He rubs his eyes, groaning as he sits up. His head hurts like hell, and his stomach churns strangely.
He grasps his forehead as he slowly scans his surroundings. This… He’s in some kind of musty (dusty, crusty) hotel room. That's weird. I definitely remember falling asleep in my apartment.
He frowns, climbing out of the bed. A—definitely unsanitary—blanket falls to the ground as he does so. He momentarily closes his eyes.
The last thing he recalls is reading the newest—and the final—chapter of TWSA before succumbing to sleep. …Was I kidnapped or something?
He immediately shakes his head. Who am I kidding? Why would anyone kidnap me?
He quietly sighs. …I should look around. He notices a door that leads to the bathroom, and swiftly decides to explore it, hoping to find a clue as to why he's here.
He turns on the light, and is immediately met with a reflection in the mirror. It’s him, with strikingly similar features to himself, but his face looks slightly different.
And…he looks so much younger, similar to how he did during his junior high years. He immediately furrows his eyebrows. What the hell?
He closes his eyes, and when he opens them again, he finds the same bewildered face staring back at him. …Is this some weird dream? I can't think of any other explanation…
He pinches his arm, immediately wincing at the pain. That…definitely hurt. Aren’t you not supposed to feel pain in a dream? Then…this is…real…?
But…how? This…doesn't make any sense. Kim Dokja takes a deep breath, shaking his head.
For now, I should continue looking around. He idly gnaws on his lip, trying to make sense of the situation.
Exiting the bathroom, he rummages around the room, pausing when he finds a note. As he reads it, his breath hitches, and his grip on the paper faintly trembles.
While not exactly the same, his experience sounds hauntingly familiar to Kim Dokja’s own. Is this some kind of sick joke? He can't help but think.
He’s in someone else's body after they tried committing suicide. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? He didn't die. The thought has his stomach churning uneasily once more.
He harshly swallows, setting the note back down. This person tried to kill himself by overdosing on pills, which presumably worked, although it still doesn't explain what, why, or how Kim Dokja is possessing (?) his body.
This situation doesn't make any sense. He exasperatedly tugs at his hair, feeling his frustration building up.
Taking a deep breath, he wills himself to move away, and on a nearby table, he finds a wallet with an ID card.
[Park Moondae 0X1215 - 3XXXXXX]
Noticing the last digit is three, he assumes that Park Moondae must be twenty. He’s still young. Or—was? He quietly gazes at the photo on the ID. As much as Kim Dokja hates to admit it, Park Moondae really reminds him of himself.
…Is there a way to get back to my own body? He ponders, but then pauses. …Would there even be a point in me returning? It’s not like there's anything for me to go back to in the first place.
My contract at Minosoft ends soon. I have no friends, no family, no one who’ll care that I’m gone, no one waiting for me to come home.
Plus, the last chapter of TWSA has already been posted, thus marking the end of its century-long journey. …What would even be the point in me returning?
Have I transmigrated or something? I don't remember dying. But, how else am I possessing someone else's body? And doesn't this kind of stuff only happen in novels and fiction?
Is this a different world? Am I in a story? A video game even? But if that's the case, then is there some kind of attribute or status window, or even a helpful guide to assist me in navigating this world?
Suddenly, a bright light flashes in front of him, interrupting his train of thought. He blinks, gazing at the pop-up window.
[Name: Park Moondae (Kim Dokja)]

“...Huh.” He dazedly mumbles aloud. “...” There really is a status window. It oddly reminds him of the attribute window in TWSA.
He reads the information once, then twice, before fully absorbing it. …What did I do to deserve this?
He internally sighs. 'Infinite potential'? 'Omniscient reader'? What's with these characteristics? What's the point in knowing all this?
He pauses for a moment, shaking his head. Well, I should gather more information about where I’m at first.
。。。
This is how Kim Dokja finds himself in a karaoke room at a gaming café. His skills remind him of the traits of idols.
And although he's not too familiar with them, in the past, he has often overheard his classmates obsessing over their bias. Besides, he has a strange feeling that this is where he’s meant to go anyway.
He’s never done karaoke before, embarrassingly never having the money nor friends for it, but he still decides to make an attempt. He sings along to the lyrics, noting how his voice sounds different.
Once the song finishes, he momentarily pauses. That…didn't sound completely terrible. At least, I don't think it did. He lightly scratches his cheek, his eyes widening as a window pops up before him.
[Achievement accomplished! ‹First attempt›]
Level 0 -> 1
You have obtained 1 point!
“...Achievement,” he mumbles to himself, “…wait, achievements?” He blinks in surprise when another notification window appears.
[Achievements in Progress]

100 attempts (0/100)
1st experience (0/1)
10 experiences (0/10)
…
“Wow,” he breathes out. The list goes on for a while. That's really a lot of achievements.
He shakes his head. In any case, since this appears to be similar to a video game, can I use the 1 point I earned? …Status window.

I'm…not sure what to use it on. What's my goal anyways? Why exactly am I doing this? What’s the point? He ponders, his lips curling into a frown.
A red pop-up window suddenly assaults his vision.
[Outbreak!]
Status Abnormality: ‘Debut or Die’!
“...What?” Upon reading the notification, his eyebrows immediately knit together, his frown deepening.
[‘Debut or Die’]
If you don't debut as an idol within the time limit, you will die.
Remaining period: D-365
Kim Dokja wants to laugh out of pure shock and incredulity. What kind of sick joke is this? Why should he have to listen to this weird system?
What if he allows the timer to run out? What if he allows himself to die? There's no point anyway- His thoughts come to a screeching halt as a new window appears.
[Park Moondae Incarnation Kim Dokja must debut.]
But, why? And…what's up with the screen glitching out? Kim Dokja internally asks, not expecting an actual response.
[Debut in order to claim your forgotten memories.]
Completing each status abnormality will reward you with fragments of your memory from ◼️◼️◼️.
Failing to clear a status abnormality will not cause you to permanently die.
So, it's basically telling me that I can't die, forcing me to do what it says to do. Before transmigrating, Kim Dokja never could've imagined that he would have to become an idol.
Wait...forgotten memories? I'm pretty sure I'm not missing any... And why is part of it censored? Furrowing his eyebrows, Kim Dokja stares distrustfully at the screen
None of this makes any sense. Seriously, what kind of cruel joke is this?
Strangely, this situation reminds him of the Star Stream. He deeply misses reading Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World. He tried searching for the novel online, but it's nowhere to be found. It doesn't exist in this world.
Shaking his head, Kim Dokja takes a deep breath, and the window winks cheerfully at him before disappearing. This is what I have to do now… In that case, would it be better to distribute the point in vocals? Or maybe it would be better to save it… He frowns as the status window updates.

It’ll probably be better to focus on becoming a main vocalist. It’s my best bet for surviving debuting. Kim Dokja thinks, nervously swallowing.
This is apparently his life now, his chance for a fresh start.
。。。
Now, what to do… After practicing his singing for a while, he begins researching idol related information.
On his phone—the model quite similar to the one he had before—he stumbles upon talk of a very controversial Idol Inc. entertainment show. He decides to watch the advertisement for season one.
[Your idol stock that grows as much as you purchase!]
“...” He deeply hates how they treat idols-in-training, and idols in general, as if they're nothing more than money—stock. It's sickening how they dehumanize them in this way.
After more digging—and falling down into a rabbit hole of the show’s disastrous season two—he finds that season three is scheduled to start soon.
That reminds me, I think I vaguely recall seeing this show before… I can't remember though.
Anyway, at this point, public auditions for the production are already over. However… He smiles to himself as he forms a plan.
。。。
First things first, he gets a haircut. He’s never been too conscious about his looks before, though if he needs wants to debut as an idol, it's important for him to maintain good looks.
If he looks more presentable, then he has a better chance at standing out, and people are more likely to support him. Plus, after eating—somewhat better—and taking greater care of himself, his visual stat shoots up to a B.
He’s merely glad that the poor kid—guy—had money in his account when Kim Dokja checked it. It seems as though Park Moodae specifically didn't use it, since it was the money his parents left him.
Kim Dokja feels a twinge of regret bubbling in his stomach, but he pushes it down, arguing it's for the greater good. He quietly hopes the real Park Moondae is in a better place now.
Kim Dokja now has a clear goal—which was forced upon him—though, as long as he's able to attract the attention of a decent agency, he can possibly have two options for debuting.
He recalls once hearing a rumor that about a week after auditions, when needing more people to fill the quota, the team recruits decent singers in karaoke places near the broadcasting station.
It's now or never. He thinks, picking up the microphone. He chose this specific karaoke room for a reason. Hopefully this works. Distribute 1 point to Vocal.

His vocal stat goes up to a B-, so not only should there be a noticeable change in his singing, but he should also now stand out better.
He takes a deep breath, then begins singing one of the ten songs he chose in advance—taking note of the noticeable difference in his singing.

He continues singing, feeling the change from a B- to a B.
“Excuse me,” after finishing another song, a woman opens the door. “Could we talk for a moment?” She asks.
“Who are you?” He asks.
Although her face is blank, she seems as though she stumbled upon a particularly naturally talented singer. She appears to be somewhat impressed, as if not expecting to find someone so talented.
“Ah, I’m not a weird person.” She adds, handing him a business card.
He accepts it with both hands, reading the information on it. Ryu Seorin, huh?
“I was listening, and thought your singing was quite impressive,” she continues, “Student, what's your name?”
Aha. His lips unconsciously curl up into a small smile. “My name is Park Moondae.”
“You have a unique name too…” She ponders for a moment. “Carefully consider this. I truly believe you have star quality. Our program can assist you.”
He nods his head. “I see. Thank you.”
“Ah, student, you have a handsome face, and you're quite good at singing. I’m sure you’ll do well if you come out of our program.” She momentarily pauses. “Hmm, do you want to go and take a test video today?”
Kim Dokja blinks. “What?”
She nods to herself. “Yes. Please contact your parents. They’ll be happy if you tell them that you’ve been cast in a TV show, and will be visiting a broadcasting station.”
He briefly hesitates. “I…don't have any parents.” He says quietly.
Her eyes sparkle, which, for Kim Dokja's sake, is not a good sign, before she realizes and swiftly schools her expression.
“Oh my… I’m sorry. I shouldn't have said that.” She says.
Kim Dokja shakes his head. “It's alright.”
“What I mean, is that you should consider this rare opportunity.” She continues attempting to persuade him.
“Mm,” This has gone on for far too long now… He internally sighs, but nods his head. “Okay.”
She visibly brightens. “Oh, you’ve made the right decision!” She exclaims. “We’re right by the broadcasting station!”
She then proceeds to eagerly drag him to the station, where he's casually interviewed. Thankfully, the interviewer doesn't ask for him to dance. Though, he’s just glad that he's now on the participant list.
。。。
Now that that's over with, Kim Dokja quietly sighs. He has ten days to practice and prepare himself. After weighing his song options, he picks one that would be the best for the first round evaluation.
Now, for the dance… He frowns, reviewing the simple choreography he chose. When he first attempted to dance, he discovered that his dance stat is at a D+.
He shakes his head. Well, there's not much I can do about that right now… He thinks, but continues to practice the dance regardless.
After practicing for hours on end, until his muscles are sore and his brain fuzzy, he somehow manages to raise his stat to a C-. He’s grateful that he's at least being shown some pity in his situation.
Not forgetting about aiming to be a main vocalist, he diligently practices his singing, making major progress in his vocal stat.
。。。
Before Kim Dokja knows it, ten days fly by, and the first day of filming begins. There's seventy-seven participants total, he notes, glancing at the different people. Currently, he's sitting in the corner, away and hidden from most of them. He doesn't want to talk to anyone, not yet, that is.
He stares warily at a kid who looks as though he's in middle school, and is bouncing around talking to the various participants. As long as he doesn't try talking to me… Thankfully, luck seems to be on his side, as the boy only talks to those near the center of the room or close to the cameras, nowhere near Kim Dokja.
He hates this. He’s already regretting his decision to actually listen to the system and attempt to debut. The fact that there’s cameras everywhere and he feels like he’s constantly being watched, makes him sick to his stomach, especially as he’s reminded of his past.
Memories flash in his head, and he unconsciously grips the bottom of his shirt, slightly bunching up the fabric. He recalls reporters swarming his relative’s house, shoving countless cameras and microphones in his face, asking incredibly invasive and insensitive questions. He remembers the large, suffocating crowds, and how he tried pushing through them.
He can feel bile rising, clawing its way up his throat at the memories, but he quickly pushes it down. He swallows harshly, staring at the floor. He hates this.
“Let's move the set!” Someone shouts.
Kim Dokja takes a deep breath, then stands up. Following the other participants, they move into a larger room, and the evaluation officially begins.
。。。
“Participant Lee Sejin B…in fifteenth place! Please take a seat.” Is announced.
“Thank you!” He replies, eagerly nodding.
Wow…he’s overly excited. …Oh, wait. I’m next. His gaze lingers on the participant for a moment before moving away.
“Next contestant, come in.”
He swiftly makes his way to the stage. Standing before the judges, he introduces himself.
“Hello, I’m Park Moondae. Please take care of me.” He bows his head.
“...Is that your entire introduction?” One of the judges asks.
Kim Dokja nods. “Yes, that's all.” It's better than something like: Park Moondae, twenty, idol-in-training.
Quiet murmurs break out between the group, though the microphone picks up on their words.
After a moment, one of the judges speaks to him. “Then, you may begin your performance.”
Kim Dokja nods, bringing the microphone closer to him as a familiar melody fills the air. In fact, the judges all recognize the song, 〈PARTY IN ME〉.
“Huh?”
“T-Holic?”
The judges whisper to each other.
Ignoring them, Kim Dokja opens his mouth and sings. His voice, loud, clear, and quite beautiful, reverberates through the room.
The expressions of the judges immediately shift to one of surprise, not expecting his vocalization to be so good. He meticulously adds slight melodies into each of the song’s complex beats, strengthening his singing, and effectively sounding more angelic.
His lips curl up into a soft smile as he sings. As he continues, his range continues to climb, comfortably and pleasantly hitting high notes most people wouldn't be able to—and ones that weren't originally in the song, but somehow seem to fit. The judges watch, entranced with the beautiful sound of his singing.
As soon as the melody ends, Kim Dokja bows his head. “Thank you for listening.”
There's a short pause as the judges snap out of their trance, then they excitedly pick up the microphone and begin speaking.
“Wow, Moondae-ssi!!”
“Hm?” He slightly tilts his head.
“You know you did a really, really good job, right!? Those high notes…!”
“Ah…” He blinks, smiling shyly. “That… I practice hard to sing well.”
One of the judges shakes his head. “You're born with natural talent.”
Kim Dokja bows his head again as the judges continue to excitedly pile on praises.
“First of all, your voice is extremely refreshing. And I can hear it better because you have good vocalization.”
“I know, right? It's like someone’s pleasantly talking right in your ear~”
“Yes, that's right.”
The vocal coach nods her head. “And while I don't think your voice necessarily suits this genre, you make it work with this song. Going higher than it originally was in the bridge adds a new vibe to the song. Additionally, you don't have any bad habits. I’m looking forward to your future, really.”
“Ah… Thank you.” Kim Dokja can't help the faint embarrassment settle within him at the praise. He’s not used to it. It was worth it to bring my vocals up to an A.
After a beat, one of the judges suddenly speaks up. “The choreography really wasn't that difficult, can we see more of you dancing?”
Kim Dokja merely smiles, nodding his head. “Of course.” He turns to one of the staff near the stage. “Is this song okay?” He asks, whispering the song name.
The staff member nods their head, quickly moving away. With that, a new melody fills the stage. The eyes of the judges widen once more, especially since there’s hardly anyone who doesn't know this iconic song and dance, TWICE’s〈CHEER UP〉, often seen in various K-Dramas. Perfectly timing the choreography, he begins dancing.
“Wow…” One of the judges mumbles.
It's odd, at first glance, that Park Moondae would pick this song. However, as he—decently—dances to the melody, it works out. The choreography suits him so surprisingly well, that no one could laugh. In fact, a few of them have the urge to dance along.
The judge who requested the dance nods her head as she analyzes Park Moondae’s performance. As the final verse plays, and he comes to a close in his dancing, a burst of cheers and claps ring in his ears.
“Ah…” He bows his head, taking a deep breath. “Thank you.”
The judge hums lightly. “You were decent,” she begins, “though, you have room for improvement. Well, I can see your effort. So, good job. Continue to work hard.”
Kim Dokja nods his head. “Yes, thank you.”
After a discussion between the judges, they announce Park Moondae’s score.
“Park Moondae's ranking…thirteenth place!”
Kim Dokja blinks. Wow. I was not expecting that. He politely bows his head, thanking them once more. He moves to seat number thirteen and sits down. As he does so, the guy beside him, in the fifteenth chair, greets him.
“Hello~”
Ah…it's that cheerful guy from earlier. “Hello.” He replies, bowing his head.
“You're so good at singing!” He exclaims. “I like the dance you chose as well!”
A faint blush appears on Kim Dokja’s face as he embarrassedly scratches his cheek with his index finger.
“Ah…” He averts his gaze. “Thank you. You did a good job as well.”
As he meets the guy’s gaze, he notices his expression visibly brightening. “Oh! I’m Lee Sejin!” He points to the name tag at the bottom of his shirt. “We’ll probably see each other more often, so I hope we get along!”
“...I’m Park Moondae.” Kim Dokja replies, his lips curling up into a gentle smile. “I hope we get along, as well.”
Lee Sejin enthusiastically nods his head.
He doesn't seem too bad. I can tell he doesn't have any bad intentions, at least not talking with me. “How old are you?” Kim Dokja asks.
“Twenty!” He grins.
It takes a moment for Kim Dokja to realize that he's not twenty-eight anymore. “Ah, we're the same age then.”
“Ooh~” He smiles. “Let's be friends!”
Ah… “Yeah, let's be friends.” Kim Dokja replies, a shy smile on his lips. Is…this how people normally make friends? He can't help but wonder.
Lee Sejin excitedly nods his head, then after a moment, he shifts his attention back to the stage. Kim Dokja uses this opportunity to check his status window.

Wow… That’ll definitely be useful. He blinks, trying to pay attention as the evaluation continues.
The next participant walks up the stage and the judges outwardly admire his face. His looks could almost rival Yoo Joonghyuk’s. Though, they both have a different kind of beauty.
Kim Dokja glances at the participant’s name tag. Seon Ahyun. He seems nervous, I wonder what his stats are. Do other people have a status window? If so, can I even see them? Suddenly, a window appears beside Seon Ahyun.

Wow… His stats are really good. But…his lack of self-esteem is a status abnormality? Does it have an effect on his stats?
The MC then tells Seon Ahyun to introduce himself.
His hand trembles as he holds the microphone, greatly exuding anxiety and embarrassment. “H-H-Hello—”
Huh. Seems he has a stuttering disorder. Is there a way to find out more about his status abnormality, lack of self-esteem? As he thinks that, a new window appears in front of him.
[Lack of self-esteem]
: I despise myself.
All stats are decreased by two levels.
Oh… On stage, Seon Ahyun tries to explain his condition to the judges. They're really using him like this? Kim Dokja withholds a frown at this thought. The idol industry truly is sick.
“Seon Ahyun ranks sixteenth place!”
He bows deeply, leaving the stage and sitting beside Lee Sejin.
“Hello~” He greets.
Kim Dokja shoots the newcomer a smile. “Hello.”
Seon Ahyun’s eyes widen in surprise. “Ah…! H-Hello…!”
He seems nice. I can't sense any negative intentions from him either. “Seon Ahyun, right? I’m Park Moondae.”
“And I’m Lee Sejin!” Lee Seejin adds.
“N-Nice to meet y-you t-two!” He exclaims, bowing his head.
Kim Dokja nods. “How old are you?” He asks.
“I-I’m twenty.” He replies.
“Oh! We’re all the same age then!” Lee Sejin exclaims, a grin on his lips.
“W-Wow…!”
They're both so lively… Kim Dokja thinks, awkwardly averting his gaze to the stage as their conversation dwindles down.

Chapter Text
After the judges finish evaluating the participants, Kim Dokja’s gaze sweeps across the ranks. In the end, he’s pushed to rank twenty-one.
“Cut! Thank you for your hard work! Participants, let's move right away.” The MC announces.
“Yes~” Some participants cheer.
A round of applause reverberates throughout the room. Kim Dokja stands up and follows the staff.
“Get your rank ticket~ You can take it on board!” One of the workers shouts, informing the participants.
A waste for a ten-minute walk. I doubt I’ll ever understand rich people. Kim Dokja frowns internally, but doesn't outwardly express it.
“Participants! If you are in the top ten, please come this way~”
Those who are in the top ten, receive a ride in a limousine, while those who are ranked fifty-one to seventy-seven, are forced to walk. They try to seem happy, but it's fairly obvious that they're holding back tears. This whole process is sick.
Those ranked eleven to twenty-five can ride in a premium bus. Lee Sejin smiles widely as he’s the first to enter, with Seon Ahyun following closely behind. They sit together, and as Kim Dokja is about to move past, Lee Sejin gently grasps his wrist.
“Moondae-Moondae, where are you going? Sit with us!” He exclaims, scooting over to make room for him in the middle of the seat.
Seon Ahyun shifts closer to the window, making space for Park Moondae as well.
“Ah…” Kim Dokja mumbles. “Are you sure…? I really don't mind sitting elsewhere. Plus, it’ll be cramped-”
Lee Sejin shakes his head. “Don't be silly.”
You're the one being silly. He sighs, and not wanting to further hold up the line, he relents in defeat, sitting in between Lee Sejin and Seon Ahyun.
Kim Dokja notices some staff members—and other participants—glancing at them, but otherwise, saying nothing. So, he assumes this is alright, though he doesn't know why it wouldn't be, in the first place.
Lee Sejin grins, lightly bumping Park Moondae's shoulder with his own. “Not so bad, right?” He teases.
Seon Ahyun merely offers a slightly apologetic smile. And while Kim Dokja is sandwiched between the two, he strangely doesn't feel claustrophobic. In fact, he can't help the feeling of warmth blossoming within him, nestling itself in his chest.
“...Yeah,” he replies quietly, averting his gaze to the floor.
。。。
They swiftly arrive at the dorms, and are assigned a spacious five-person room.
“Wow~ How lucky!” Lee Sejin exclaims.
After being pushed to rank twenty-one, Lee Sejin’s rank became twenty-two, and Seon Ahyun’s rank shifted to twenty-four. Thus, with the way the rooms are assigned, he’s rooming with Lee Sejin and Seon Ahyun—along with two other participants.
Kim Dokja nods his head. I’m glad I’m familiar with at least two of my dorm mates.
He places his luggage on one of the bottom bunk beds. Seon Ahyun claims the bed above his, and Lee Sejin claims the bottom bunk directly across from Park Moondae’s. Kim Dokja merely smiles at them, feeling a bit awkward.
Afterward, they change into the training clothes—which they were previously given—and head to the room where everyone is told to gather.
Lee Sejin and Seon Ahyun continue to stick by his side, which he doesn't complain about, but it feels very unfamiliar to him.
He’s never had friends—much less acquaintances—who treat him this way. They seem to be good kids, so I’ll try not to let them down… He lightly rubs the back of his neck, glancing up at the person standing before everyone.
“You're going to start training in earnest now!” The MC announces. “It’s called~ Customized movement class!”
“...” Kim Dokja internally sighs. He already regrets everything. I’ve completed school for what? To take more classes? And movement classes at that? Why don't I give up already-
[Park Moondae Incarnation Kim Dokja must debut.]
The notification blares in front of him, slightly blocking his vision. He internally clicks his tongue. I get it, I get it. I really wasn't serious about giving up… He represses the urge to sigh aloud.
After a moment, the window disappears and Kim Dokja tries to focus as the MC continues to speak. “Everyone, your scores for vocal and dance have been decided based on the grades you got from the judges!”
Kim Dokja subtly flinches. Oh, right. He glances around, noticing many of the participants looking uneasy. They must be the ones who didn't rank well.
“There are upper, middle, and lower groups in each class; each level aims to improve their skills through specialized training. And you can change classes in real-time at any time! It all depends on your hard work and dedication!”
If that's the case, if you excel in vocals or dance, you can quickly move up to the advanced class. Then, the opposite is also true. If you don't do well, you can drop into a lower class.
“This badge… Participant Moondae!”
Kim Dokja blinks as he hears Park Moondae’s name called. “Yes.” He walks up to the platform and picks up his assigned badges.
He receives a gold badge (advance) for Vocal and a silver one (intermediate) for Dance. Once he places them on his shoulder—the sleeve of his shirt—he then returns to his seat.
“C-Congrats, M-Moondae.” Seon Ahyun says.
“Thank you, Ahyun-ssi.” Kim Dokja politely bows his head. “Congratulations on your badges.”
“A-Ah, th-thank you! Um, y-you d-don't have to speak f-formally with m-me!” He exclaims.
Kim Dokja nods his head. “Then, Ahyun, speak casually to me as well.”
“O-Okay!” Seon Ahyun smiles brightly.
“Wow~” Lee Sejin grins at Park Moondae. “Moondae-Moondae! It's a given that you revive a gold for your Vocal, you're very talented at singing.” He nods.
“Ah…” Kim Dokja glances at Lee Sejin’s badges, then embarrassingly averts his gaze, a faint pink dusting his cheeks. “Thank you… You're quite talented at dancing, Sejin-ssi.”
He’s…certainly a flatterer. But why does his praise embarrass me so much? This is what friends do, right? They support each other, so I should do the same.
Wait. Kim Dokja momentarily pauses. …Did he call me Moondae-Moondae? Is that a nickname for Park Moondae? …Has he been calling me that? Since when?
Lee Sejin's smile widens at the compliment. “Thank you!” He laughs, the sound softly echoing in Kim Dokja’s ears. “And you can speak informally with me.”
“...I see.” Kim Dokja nods his head. “Okay. Then, you can do the same.” He adds. As he quickly shifts his attention, he misses the amused smile that briefly flashes on Lee Sejin’s lips.
I noticed that some participants didn't receive any badges at all. Is it because their skills were graded so poorly?
“If you don’t have a badge…it means that you're not a part of any grade. You will take a beginner’s class together, but you will also have to take extra special training at night.” The MC continues.
Oh… He glances around, and one person in particular stands out to him. He thinks for a moment, recalling the participant’s name.
He previously introduced himself as Lee Sejin. Ah, isn't he an actor? It seems like he’s probably aiming to make a comeback rather than debut.
After all the badges are distributed, the large screen flickers to life.
“Now, the song that you’ll be practicing will be revealed! For the next ten days, you will do your best to master this song and present it to the shareholders of ‹Idol Joint-Stock Company›!”
He momentarily pauses for a dramatic effect.
“The song for this season is… 〈Shining Star〉!”
As the song and choreography play, Kim Dokja internally perks up at the recognition. Ah, this song… He recalls often hearing it, since it was playing almost everywhere when it was first released.
He stares at the screen, analyzing the performance. It's meant to look complicated, however, it's much easier than it seems. …Though, that doesn't mean I can't take it easy. It’ll still be a bit difficult to memorize, especially at first.
Kim Dokja internally sighs. I wish I could give up, but I know for a fact that this stupid system won't let me. Seems as though my characteristic, ‘Sleeping only after you die,’ will come in handy.
。。。
Kim Dokja severely underestimates how much work he would actually be putting into practicing. He eventually settles into a routine, working on his choreography during his free time—and most definitely when he should be sleeping instead.
As a few days pass, his muscles are sore, he’s tired, and he's hungry. Today, he can't remember what he last ate, or even when he did so. He shakes his head, quietly leaning against the wall as he takes a short break.
Luckily, this skill allows me to not feel so exhausted. I’d probably be dead on the floor without it. He idly stares at the ground, ruminating in his thoughts.
I need to work harder. This isn't enough. He quietly sighs, stretching his arms and legs.
There's something that's been bothering me, though. Ever since I first got here, when I fall asleep, I dream of these…memories, but they're not mine.
I assume they're the original Park Moondae’s memories, since that would make the most sense. There's a lot of his past, but also, of ones that seem to be…of a future?
It's as though someone else was meant to take over Park Moondae’s body. But that doesn't explain how or why I’m being shown their memories.
Hm… I can probably make similar decisions to the ones he made, it worked for him, after all. …I’ll see what happens first. The situation might change.
Kim Dokja shakes his head. What time is it anyway? Well, I guess it doesn't really matter. I should practice until it's time for class. I might as well take full advantage of my characteristic.
Kim Dokja’s ears perk up as he hears the door open, and a quiet pair of footsteps walk toward him. He turns his head, his gaze shifting across the two people.
“Seon Ahyun, Lee Sejin?” He raises an eyebrow.
“You haven't eaten yet, right?” Lee Sejin asks.
“Oh, I—” Before Kim Dokja can continue or react, Seon Ahyun gently pushes an assortment of snacks into his arms.
“H-Here.” He quietly says, a shy, nervous smile on his lips.
“...!” Kim Dokja’s eyes widen. “Ah… Thank you both.” He bows his head. They really…bought all this…for me?
“I-It’s not a p-problem!” Seon Ahyun replies, waving his hands in front of him.
“Don't just eat these. Make sure you eat actual food too.” Lee Sejin adds, lightly poking his shoulder.
“I will,” Kim Dokja bows his head again. “Thank you both.”
In that case, it doesn't hurt to take a break. Kim Dokja sits on the floor, opening a chocolate bar and nibbling on it.
“O-Of course!” Seon Ahyun shares a glance with Lee Sejin, who nods his head.
“...?” Kim Dokja glances at Seon Ahyun, then Lee Sejin.
“I-I’ll get g-going t-then. P-Please take c-care of y-yourself!” Seon Ahyun exclaims, quickly bowing his head and leaving the room.
“Ah…” Kim Dokja mumbles. He already left. As Kim Dokja finishes a chocolate bar and stretches once more, Lee Sejin sits down beside him.
“You sure are working hard.” He comments, tilting his head toward Park Moondae.
Kim Dokja nods. “I want to get better.”
“But…that doesn't mean you should neglect yourself.” Lee Sejin adds, gently nudging Park Moondae’s shoulder.
“I’ll be alright.” Kim Dokja replies.
Lee Sejin frowns. “That's not what I meant. Don't sacrifice your health for the sake of improvement.”
Kim Dokja blinks. Is he…worried? He can't help the warm feeling bubbling up inside him at the thought. Though, he quickly shoves it down.
He shakes his head. No, that can't be. Don't be delusional. “...Right.”
Lee Sejin sighs, placing a hand on his shoulder. “I’m telling you to take better care of yourself.”
“Oh,” Kim Dokja mumbles. He averts his gaze, nodding his head. “I will.”
I’ll try to, at least. I don't want to worry him more than I already have. And I owe them this much, at least.
Lee Sejin’s lips curl up into a small smile. “Good. Do you need help practicing?” He asks, standing up and extending a hand toward Park Moondae.
“Ah…” I want to decline, but…I could really use his help. Kim Dokja nods his head. “Yeah, that would be great.”
He gently places his pile of snacks on the floor, then grasps Lee Sejin's hand.
Pulling Park Moondae to his feet, Lee Sejin grins. “Alright. Let's start then!”
。。。
With the help of Lee Sejin—and the additional guidance of Seon Ahyun—Kim Dokja manages to completely memorize the choreography. The two ensure that he eats three meals a day, though, to their displeasure, they're unable to force him to sleep.
Looking back at my classes, I’ve been fairly average in dance, and exceeding standards in vocals. None of the participants really stood out to me—besides the ones from before, the high-ranked participants. I haven't moved up or down in either of the classes, which is good.
There was someone with an A- Vocal stat. I recall him being scolded by our singing coach since he was struggling with the song. …I hope he doesn't hold a grudge against me. It's not my fault the coach kept comparing the two of us. Aigoo, at least that kid seems to mostly ignore me.
But it's not just him, many of the other participants seem to dislike me as well. It might be because of the praise the Vocal coach gives me. I’m…just trying to survive. It's not like I’m intentionally doing this.
Kim Dokja shakes his head. Anyway, I should quickly check my status window.
[Name: Park Moondae (Kim Dokja)]
Level: 7
Title: None
Vocal: A
Dance: C+
Visual: B
Talent: C
Charisma: B+
Characteristics: Infinite potential, omniscient reader
Remaining points: 2
!Status abnormality: Debut or die
I think it was the right choice to put one point into my Dance stat. And I’ll save the other two for now. It's good that I was able to level up twice. Well, today’s the day. It's thanks to Sejin and Ahyun that I was able to get the choreography down.
The lights on the set seem extra bright today, Kim Dokja notes. The judges politely greet each other—as if they hadn't just seen each other earlier.
…There's no ceiling. Kim Dokja scans his surroundings. It appears like it's meant to be a temporary set. We’ll probably see why soon.
“Now, everyone!” The MC announces. “We will begin the rank evaluations!”
Abruptly, the walls move down into the floor, allowing the set to be fully open.
“The re-listing of the new ‹Idol Joint-Stock Company›! The first gateway is—the full public evaluation!”
Did he just say “full public evaluation.” Oh no.
“The seventy-seven participants who practiced the same song will evaluate each other as an audience!”
Aigoo… Kim Dokja withholds a sigh, his attention on the MC as he continues.
“Your final grade evaluation will be decided through this open evaluation. Now, we’ll be doing it in the order of your current ranking. However! This time, we're going in the reverse order!”
“...!”
“Seventy-seventh place, Chu Seonggu, please come to the stage!”
They're using him as a throw-away card. Many participants shoot him a look filled with pity and sympathy. I shouldn’t show a reaction, I should pretend to be indifferent.
As expected, the participant doesn't perform too well, and the next one doesn't do any better either. After several people's less-than-average performances, even the judges begin looking a bit uncomfortable.
They're waiting for someone who’ll take a chance and perform, and they’ll appear better since many of the ones before them gave up. …It’s a cruel situation meant to better the show.
Kim Dokja blinks after another performance. Ah…isn't that the actor, Lee Sejin? When the judges compare him to those who went before him, he really doesn't seem too bad.
After many, many other participants, it's finally Park Moondae’s turn.
“Fighting!” Lee Sejin encouragingly pats Park Moondae’s shoulder.
“F-Fighting!” Seon Ahyun raises his hand for a fist bump—which Kim Dokja accepts.
Nodding his head, Kim Dokja repeats the word. “Fighting.” He slowly walks up to the stage.
“Then, we’ll begin the grade evaluation.” One of the judges says.
Kim Dokja takes a deep breath, and as the song begins, he turns—taking the first move. Matching the song’s rhythm, he correctly copies the choreography while amazingly singing the lyrics. Even though it's not the most amazing, it's still quite impressive.
“Wow…he improved this much?” A judge mumbles.
“He must’ve worked hard!”
His technique is quite polished and powerful, and his notes are in tune and clean. It’s extraordinary how his voice sounds so good even as he's dancing.
Eventually, Park Moondae smoothly finishes his performance, and the judges fall silent. Kim Dokja catches his breath, his face faintly flushed, and a small smile on his lips.
The dance coach is the first judge to speak. “Hey, Park Moondae.”
“...Yes?”
“Good job.”
“...!” Kim Dokja’s smile widens and he bows his head. “Thank you.”
“A good plot twist will win.” Isn't that what they say in audition programs? …Reminds me of the plot twists in TWSA. He internally sighs. I miss reading Yoo Joonghyuk's story.
“It was an admirable performance.”
“There's nothing to criticize you on today~”
“Good job, Park Moondae!”
“Thank you.” Kim Dokja bows his head. Seems like I won't be eliminated today.
“How did you improve this much?” A judge asks. “It's not like you were too bad before, but you’ve made a considerable amount of growth since the last time you performed.”
“Ah… I had some help.” He replies.
“Help?”
Kim Dokja nods. “Yes. My friends, Sejin and Ahyun, greatly helped me practice the choreography. They're very kind.” His smile widens.
…It feels weird to say that I actually have friends, since I’ve never really had any before. I hope they don't mind that I mentioned them.
“Hey, are you saying that I’m not kind? You're making me look bad.” The choreographer jokingly replies.
“I thoroughly enjoyed your performance today.” The vocal coach speaks up. “Great work. Keep working hard.”
Kim Dokja bows his head. “I’ll do my best. Thank you all.”
。。。
Eventually, all the participants finish, and the MC explains the new platinum badge addition. “Well then, everyone, open the box that contains your final rank!”
I did okay, and considering I’m in the twenty-rank range, I should receive a gold badge. Kim Dokja slowly opens the box, his eyes widening at what's inside.
“...!” That's...definitely not gold. It's…a platinum badge. But I’m in the top twenty? Is it because I improved quite a bit? …Surely they're playing a prank on me?
“W-Woah…!” Seon Ahyun turns toward Park Moondae, and his expression shifts to one of surprise.
“Hey, Moondae-Moondae, what did you— Wow! That's seriously amazing!!” Lee Sejin exclaims, placing a hand on Park Moondae’s shoulder as he leans over, peering inside the box. “Platinum! Wow! You're really amazing!”
A faint pink dusts Kim Dokja’s cheeks. “Ah…thank you both. Congrats on your badges as well.”
“Y-Yeah! C-Congrats!” Seon Ahyun smiles brightly.
Kim Dokja briefly glances at the two’s badges before gently grabbing his own, gently holding it in his hands. His lips curl up into a small smile. They won't claim that it's a mistake and take it from me, right?
“Honestly, you deserve it!” Lee Sejin beams at him, proud of his friend.
“T-That's right! Y-You’ve been w-working so hard l-lately.” Seon Ahyun adds.
“Ah… It's thanks to both of you. I was able to improve so much thanks to your help.” Kim Dokja places his badge on himself and bows his head.
“B-But still!” Seon Ahyun exclaims.
The two follow after him, putting their own badges on.
“Wow, Ahyun, you got gold? Me too! Congrats~” Lee Sejin grins.
“A-Ah! Y-Yeah!” Seon Ahyun enthusiastically nods his head. “C-Congrats!”
Kim Dokja shoots them both a smile, then turns away, glancing at the other participants. Ah, there are quite a few others with platinum, but it seems like I’m the only one in the twenty range.
“Please come up to the stage, starting with the participants who received the platinum grade!”
Kim Dokja walks up the stage, and the participants are arranged in the shape of a fan. Kim Dokja is placed toward the front of the middle, next to Lee Sejin.
“How do you feel?” He asks.
Kim Dokja turns toward him. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, isn't it a little disappointing that you're not in the front with the other platinum participants?” He clarifies. “I know I would.”
Kim Dokja shrugs lightly. “I don't mind it all that much. But, that makes sense for you.”
“Huh? Why?” Lee Sejin asks.
“Well, you're good at dancing.” Kim Dokja smiles at him.
“...!” Lee Sejin's eyes briefly widen before he beams at him. “Would you like help stretching? I’m good at giving massages!”
“Ah, I’m okay, thank you.” Kim Dokja politely bows his head.
“You can't dance?” A platinum-grade participant asks.
Oh, he’s the contestant who placed first in the beginning. He’s also the one in the center of the first row. He doesn't seem to harbor any ill intent. If I recall correctly…his name is Cha Eugene.
“What do you—” Lee Sejin begins, but Kim Dokja interrupts him.
“Didn't you see my evaluation?” He asks, a smile on his face.
Cha Eugene’s expression dampens. “We have to prepare for our own performance, so I didn't really watch others.”
Kim Dokja nods. “I see. Then, next time, watch my performance and judge it for yourself.”
“Mm… Okay!” Cha Eugene nods as well, turning around and facing forward.
“...I don't think he meant any harm. But he has an interesting way of speaking. Is it because he’s from abroad?” Lee Sejin asks.
“Yeah.” Kim Dokja replies.
“Okay, let's begin the rehearsal~” A staff member shouts.
It's only 06:00 A.M. They start the recording of our actual performance at 16:00 And we should be done by 20:00. …Aigoo, it’s going to be a long day.
。。。
A few hours pass until the filming finally concludes.
“Good job~!”
One by one, several of the participants fall to the floor.
“...” I mean, that was exhausting, but still… To be fair, I am out of stamina.
“Everyone, you worked really hard~” The main PD compliments them. “This performance will be on Music Night next Friday. You will continue shooting again the next day. Until then, rest well, and never forget, this is a great opportunity for you.”
Many of the participants shout enthusiastic words in response.
“Let's work hard till the end.”
“Yes!”
“Then see you next week. You all did well~”
“You have worked harder!”
“...” That's such a lie. Though Kim Dokja thinks that, he applauds with everyone else. Aigoo, I should work on building my stamina up. I have time until the Music Night appearance.
。。。
A week passes by in the blink of an eye. Immediately after the first filming, Kim Dokja becomes sick. He practically collapses as soon as he enters Park Moondae’s apartment. He doesn't have anyone to take care of him—not as Kim Dokja, and not as Park Moondae.
Does that matter though? No, not to Kim Dokja. He’s been sick before, so he does what he normally would and pushes on, but it's more like he ignores it.
On the plus side—or rather not—when he sleeps, he continues to receive fragments of memories. At this point, it's practically confirmed that they're Park Moondae’s memories.
However, the ones of the future…those ones confuse me. It seems like I’m in their shoes, though. I can definitely use this to my advantage, whether or not some things change.
Kim Dokja doesn't have any medicine, but he doesn't particularly feel like going to the store to buy some. So, despite his fever, he continues to practice dancing and training his stamina. Well, it is what it is. He shrugs. It's not like I’m dying.
[Outbreak!]
Status Abnormality: ‘Debut or Die’!
[Park Moondae Incarnation Kim Dokja must debut.]
“...” Kim Dokja’s eye twitches. I get it, I get it. This system really is annoying…
Though, something about it is bugging me. Like how it's eerily similar to the one from TWSA, especially considering how I can make out the word “incarnation.” And it's calling me that, for some reason?
…This whole situation makes no sense. Kim Dokja shakes his head, lightly grasping his forehead.
He quietly sighs, moving to Park Moondae’s living room. He sits down on the couch, leaning back as the T.V. in front of him plays Music Night.
On the screen, Youngrin stands on the stage with dramatic lighting and shadows.
“Shareholder-nims! Do you remember how the show was canceled last time?”
“...?” Kim Dokja tilts his head.
“For turning your stocks into scraps of paper… We truly apologize!!” She shouts.
Kim Dokja blinks. What is she doing?
Below her, captions appear.
[※This is an apology from the production team. Youngrin is not guilty. ※]
[※We are still accepting claims for damages on our website.※]

Chapter Text
…They've actually lost it, haven't they? Kim Dokja blinks, his eyes wide.
On screen, Youngrin continues speaking, her expression unchanging. “To prevent the same disaster, the production team will give all the decision-making power to the shareholders!”
“...” Who thought this was a good idea? I can already tell this is going to cause so many problems. The show can only go downhill from here.
“The member composition, member count, and even team combinations…” The lights faintly flicker. “Shareholder-nims, please decide it for us!!
This is such a horrible idea, what is the show doing? If the shareholders don't like me, I can kiss debuting as an idol on this show goodbye...
“Or…” She trails off. “Do you dislike a particular team member? Then you can kick them out.”
“Ha…” I’m so screwed. I have a feeling this whole thing is going to go horribly in the future.
“Our company’s life and death depends on the shareholders! ‹Idols Joint-Stock Company› re-listed is starting now!”
The stage, shaped similar to a large star, shines with bright lights, making it appear like a galaxy. Standing in the middle of the stage, where the spotlight is on, are the platinum-grade participants.
The camera zooms in on them, then stops, and the intro swiftly begins. The participants, one-by-one, turn around, the camera taping their movement.
Ah… I actually don't look too bad. My dancing wasn't terrible enough to stick out; it seems like I blend in more than anything. As the performance continues, the gold-grade participants smoothly appear on the sides of the formation, then the bronze-grades appear behind them.
Wow. They edited this really well. Kim Dokja notes as he glances at the comment section, skimming through the messages. The reaction seems to be surprisingly positive. If nothing else, many of them like the song.
He lightly scratches his cheek as he sees some comments about his looks. Ah…it seems that some people already have a favorable opinion of me. My visual stat is a B, so that makes sense.
After the trailer finishes, Kim Dokja quietly sighs. “Ha...”
I should probably check the public opinion of the participants. I already know most people have an unfavorable view of the show.
Suddenly, his stomach growls, reminding him he hasn't eaten yet. …Right. I should probably eat something first. He stands up and makes his way toward the kitchen.
。。。
After eating, Kim Dokja lies in bed, his phone in front of him. He scrolls through some posts, eventually stumbling upon a few in particular that mention him—Park Moondae.
[-Park Moondae is so precious, his expression when dancing is so lovable!]
[-Park Moondae is so cute! Ahhh I watched the stage again to see him, and the camera did not do him justice ㅠㅠ After watching the trailer, it seems he did good, so, I’m considering watching it.]
[-Moondae is like a little chibi I want to keep in my pocket.]
└[-Seconded. I love his face]
└[-Thirded! He's sooo pretty]
[-Park Moondae isn't too bad at dancing, but he's probably really good at singing since he's platinum.]
[-Moondae seems to be an unknown idol trainee, so I’m rooting for him!!]
[-I already bought Park Moondae stock <3]
└[-Same!]
└[-Let’s buy all of his stock]
[-I can tell Park Moondae is definitely going to make it big! <3]
“...”
Are…these people okay? Kim Dokja awkwardly scratches his cheek with his index finger, his face faintly heating up from embarrassment. He’s never been talked about this way before. He didn't expect Park Moondae to garner this kind of a reaction. Though, it works out in his favor.
…I should…do better. So many people are spending money to support me—Park Moondae. …I don't want to let them down.
Suddenly, a notification pops up in front of his phone.
[The beginning of fame!]

…The beginning of fame? Kim Dokja blinks. One thousand… That many people noticed me? A strange feeling wells up inside of him, one he quickly pushes down. He taps the button to draw a general characteristic. Once again, a slot machine appears.
Seems to be the same grades as last time. Ah, I hope I get something that'll help me improve my skills. As the wheel is about to stop, another notification appears before him.
[Congratulations!]
: You’ve successfully drawn a hero characteristic!
The slot machine then comes to a stop, landing on a silver box. Kim Dokja blinks. …A hero characteristic?

Hm. ‘Causes emotional agitation,’ huh? This could be useful. Maybe not right now, but in the future. It could be especially good when talking to an audience. I wonder if it’ll have an effect when I’m singing. Right, I should probably check my status window.

Kim Dokja momentarily ponders how he should distribute his points. It's good that I got another point from the broadcast. I think it’d be a good idea to distribute one to Dance to increase it to a B-, and…add another one to Vocal? Then I can save the last one for emergencies.
Kim Dokja nods to himself. Yeah, that'll work. He then distributes the two points.

That settles that. We start filming again tomorrow, so I should be prepared. Kim Dokja stretches his arms before flopping back onto the bed. He quietly sighs to himself, closing his eyes. I need to conserve my energy for tomorrow.
。。。
“‹Idol Joint-Stock Company› is back! Participants, did you rest well?” The MC announces.
“Yes!” Some participants exclaim.
At this point, Kim Dokja has somewhat of an idea about what's to come. Based on what's happened so far, the season’s first team battle will occur soon, probably today.
He notices a handful of participants meeting each other's gaze. …Speaking of which, do we pick our groups or do they pick for us?
“The stage everyone will be preparing for today is~ a team battle!” The MC continues.
“Woah!” A participant shouts.
“There must be some participants you want to team up with, since this is the first team battle, right?” The MC asks.
I sense a “but” coming next…
“However! Idols need to show teamwork despite who's in their group. In this particular evaluation, you will not be allowed to choose who you team up with.” He adds.
Kim Dokja internally sighs. Figures.
“But how will teams form? First, please come grab a ball out of this box.” The MC smiles, gesturing toward the box.
“Why is it so scary?” Lee Sejin whispers.
Glancing over at him, Kim Dokja lightly shrugs. Then, following the person in front of him, he grabs a ball from the box. Twelve, he notes.
“Participant one,” the MC shouts, “who are you? Raise your hand!” A silver-grade participant clumsily raises his hand. “Ah, it's participant Lee Hongsoo!”
The MC then points to a sign placed in the auditorium. He smiles. “Please reveal the content of the sign.”
As soon as he walks towards the signs, they light up, and the names of famous agencies appear on them.
“Here are the names of the leading K-POP agencies around the world! You have to choose one of them, however, the capacity is only fourteen people!” The MC declares. “Additionally, if the quota is exceeded, the participant with the higher rank can push out the one with a lower rank and take their place!”
“Wow… The rules are so cruel,” Lee Sejin mumbles. He suddenly turns toward Park Moondae. “Hey, Moondae-Moondae, you won't push me out if we pick the same agency, right?”
Kim Dokja nods his head. “Don't worry, I won’t.”
Lee Sejin smiles. “Good. You’re…” He trails off, peeking over Park Moondae’s shoulder to see his picked number. “Number twelve, right? Which agency will you pick?” He asks.
“Hm, I’m going to choose based on the team members.” Kim Dokja replies.
“Ah~ and not the agency?” He questions.
“While all the agencies here are famous and have lots of hit songs, what's most important is the members.” Kim Dokja explains.
Lee Sejin nods. “I see, that makes sense.”
“Let's begin with number one, participant Lee Hongsoo.” The MC announces.
The participant then moves to stand in front of a particular agency known for its male idols.
It’ll be a bit difficult to properly check the team members in advance, however, it should be fine. He glances over at the several others who are choosing their team. None of them really stand out to me. Hm…
“Next participant, number twelve!” The MC calls out.
Ah, it's my turn. Kim Dokja moves forward, and picks a certain team. Leti… This should be fine.
“Ah! He’s here!” One of them shouts.
“Oh~ Our main vocalist!” The other exclaims.
“Heesung, get ready!”
“Hello~!” The two gold-grade participants greet Park Moondae with a clumsy enthusiasm.
“Hello,” Kim Dokja greets back, slightly bowing his head.
They’re…Kwon Heesung and Ha Iljun if I remember correctly. He briefly glances at their name tags. Yeah, that's correct. Both of their main positions are dance, so we won't overlap. And…they don't seem too bad. Kim Dokja smiles at them.
Soon after, Lee Sejin—the actor, joins their group. The two gold-participants attempt to welcome him. “A-Ah, hello!”
“...”
…These poor kids. I should try and be nice as well.
“Hello.” Kim Dokja says as he slightly bows his head.
Surprisingly, Lee Sejin stiffly nods, then quickly averts his gaze.
“...?” Huh.
A little while later Seon Ahyun walks up to them, holding the number thirty-three. Kim Dokja smiles and waves at Seon Ahyun, who immediately brightens.
The next to join is a platinum-grade participant, Ryu Chungwoo. “Please take care of me!” He smiles.
Kim Dokja nods, slightly bowing his head. There’s one spot left. Some participants were pushed out, and one in particular—Choi Wongil—joined their team. Kim Dokja politely greets him, though Choi Wongil seems to ignore him.
…He doesn't still hold a grudge against me, does he? It wasn't even really my fault. Kim Dokja internally sighs. Great. Well, at this point, the last two participants have to push someone out.
Suddenly, Lee Sejin—not the actor—points toward Kim Dokja’s area. “Bronze-grade participant, Jung Hyeongjung, I’m really sorry!” He exclaims.
Lee Sejin walks over and takes his place. “Ah, Moondae-Moondae, are you going to be the main vocalist~?”
Kim Dokja lightly shrugs. “Whoever fits the best will be the lead vocalist.”
Lee Sejin nods. “I see, I see.” He smiles, gently patting Park Moondae on the back.
“...” This guy…he’s quite weird. Anyways, since there's fourteen of us, it’d be best to split into two groups. As for how that’ll work…
“Now, since everyone has chosen an agency, it's time to move on. Whoever was the first to pick your group, please press on the button above the sign!” The MC declares.
On the sign, there’s two numbers with seven numbers in each. Wait. Is this…? Kim Dokja stares at the screen. This is how we’ll be split into teams of seven.
“Oh, what’s that?” A participant wonders.
“Lottery numbers?”
“Can you see the numbers on the sign?” The MC asks.
[4, 7, 12, 15, 33, 37, 62]
[17, 24, 27, 38, 41, 59, 72]
So, I’m on the first team. Who else is with me?
“Based on the results, those are the participants in either team A or team B. And you’ll be performing a one-on-one match with the other team!”
The studio abruptly bursts to life.
“Oh, hey, what's your—I was number five, right?”
“Yes!”
Next to Kim Dokja, Kwon Heesung and Ha Iljun cheer and hug each other. They then turn toward Park Moondae.
“Park Moondae-hyung, we're on the same team!”
“Wow! We have a main vocalist!”
Kim Dokja smiles at them. “I look forward to working with you guys.”
“Same here!” They exclaim.
Suddenly, someone hugs Kim Dokja from behind, causing him to briefly flinch. “...!”
He glances behind him, noticing Lee Sejin smiling down at him, and his arm gently resting around Park Moondae’s shoulder. That surprised me…
“Oh~ Our team is pretty good!” Lee Sejin beams.
Kim Dokja nods, slightly relaxing his shoulders. “Yeah, it is.” He agrees.
“I-I look f-forward to your kind c-cooperation.” Seon Ahyun says, bowing his head.
Kim Dokja smiles at him. I’m glad he’s on our team as well. Let's see, who else? Ah, actor Lee Sejin, and—
“...”
“...”
Kim Dokja internally sighs. Choi Wongil. I can already tell he's going to cause problems.
“I-I think our t-team is good!” Seon Ahyun exclaims.
Lee Sejin nods. “I agree! There’s so many good looking people!”
“Yes, that's right! And we have a main vocalist!” Ha Iljun adds.
“Well, you have good eyes, my friends…” Lee Heesung grins.
“Yeah, I’m not talking about you, Heesung.” Lee Sejin beams. Lee Heesung’s expression dramatically falls.
“Wow!! I think it's real-ly going to be fun!!” Choi Wongil exclaims with fake enthusiasm.
“...” Aigoo, I hope my sanity stays intact. He withholds a sigh. …Will this team be okay? It's pretty balanced overall, but if one of the members is uncooperative, they could drag the entire team down. I’m a bit worried about actor Lee Sejin, and…Choi Wongil.
Lee Sejin then speaks up again. “Ah, um, actor Lee Sejin.”
“...?”
“Since we have the same name, how should we differentiate ourselves?” He asks.
“...I’m not sure.” He mumbles.
“Oh! Why don't we come up with nicknames for each other? Since you're an actor…how about Bae?” Lee Sejin smiles.
He subtly flinches. “What?”
“Hey, since you’re big, how about Keun Sejin?” Ha Iljun suggests, a grin on his lips.
Keun Sejin laughs. “Moondae-Moondae, what do you think?”
…Me? Why is he asking for my opinion? “...I think it's fitting.” Kim Dokja replies.
Keun Sejin beams, gently patting his shoulder.
“Ah…” Lee Sejin begins, “I like my name as is…”
“...”
Aigoo, I should try and descelate this. “That's fine, then.” Kim Dokja says. “We’ll just call you Lee Sejin.”
Lee Sejin purses his lips, but hesitantly nods. Somehow, his expression seems lighter. I wonder why that is… Crisis successfully averted though. The overall mood is still relatively fine.
“Yes, that's fine. In that case, from now on, please call me Keun Sejin~” Keun Sejin adds.
“It’s nice~”
Kim Dokja and the others nod their heads. Keun Sejin smiles, quietly exhales, and pats Park Moondae’s shoulder once more.
This guy…is very touch affectionate, isn't he? …Or something like that…? Do friends normally act this way? Those two—Ha Iljun and Lee Heesung—behave similarly with each other, so, I assume so.
“Participants, have you all made yourselves familiar with each other?” The MC asks. “Now then, let's finally begin the song selection! The monitor has changed again, right? Will the first person who joined the team press it again?”
“Hyung-nim, I’ll trust you!!”
Ha Iljun taps the button on the sign. Plenty of different songs from VTIC pass by. Eventually, it slowly comes to a stop, landing on the song 〈Into A New World〉 by Squishy Sweet.
“...” The entire group falls silent.
“I-Is it an error…?” Ha Iljun mumbles.
Kim Dokja withholds a sigh. They're cheap for this. While SquishySweet isn't exactly VTIC, they're a group under them…
“Their debut song…it was about flower fairies.”
“Oh…”
Suddenly, cheers erupt beside them. The second group’s song is 〈Tiger〉 by VTIC.
That’s currently one of the most popular songs. Kim Dokja glances back at his team, noting their downcast expressions.
“...” Kim Dokja withholds a sigh. “Think positively, there's no use dwelling on what we can't change.” He says.
“A-Ah! M-Moondae is r-right.” Seon Ahyun determinedly nods.
“Yeah!” Keun Sejin chimes in. “We’ll figure something out and do our best!”
The group seems to have a new sense of vigor as they nod. Their moods have lifted a bit. That’s good.
。。。
…This isn't working. A majority of the group members are sprawled across the floor. Kim Dokja glances over at each of them where he sits against the wall.
“H-Here, I b-brought water.” Seon Ahynun says.
Kim Dokja accepts the water bottle Seon Ahyun hands him. “Thank you.”
“A-Ah, y-you're welcome!” He beams. He then moves to give Keun Sejin beside him a water bottle, who also takes it and thanks him.
Kim Dokja glances at the floor. Even if we continue to try, it won't work well. He ponders for a moment, lightly tapping his finger on the floor. We need to do something different, but what?
“...Hey, has there always been a girl group song included in the show?” Ha Iljun asks.
“This is the first time I’m seeing it.” Keun Sejin replies.
“...I…thought it was some kind of error.”
Aigoo… Perhaps we should do a different concept. Maybe listening to the song will give me ideas. Kim Dokja places an earbud in his ear, listening to the song once more. Around him, the others continue to grumble.
“How could people like us do a fairy concept… We're doomed…”
“Fairies my ass. More like horrendous goblins…”
“Wow~” Keun Sejin leans toward Park Moondae. “Look at Moondae listening to the song in the midst of this.”
“There's nothing we can do about the song, since it's set in stone. However, who said we have to do a fairy concept?” Kim Dokja replies.
Silence momentarily settles over the group.
“What do you mean?” Ha Iljun asks.
“But isn't that the theme of the song?” Lee Heesung pipes up.
Kim Dokja nods. “We can keep the song relatively the same, however, we can change the meaning of it.”
“Hm~ What did you have in mind?” Keun Sejin asks, an amused smile on his lips.
“Well…before we talk more about it, we should finalize our parts first.” Kim Dokja says.
“Ah, right! Is everyone fine with their current parts?” Keun Sejin scans his gaze across the group.
All but one person nods—Choi Wongil—who raises his hand. “Um…the key doesn't really match me well.”
“Really?” Keun Sejin asks. “But aren't the other parts too low?”
“...”
“You're a vocalist, so~ And besides that, there's only Moondae’s part, but his lines are even higher than yours.” Keun Sejin continues.
“I think it’ll be easier if it's way higher.” Choi Wongil adds, glancing at Park Moondae.
…He wants my part. I see how it is. Well, if he wants it so much… Kim Dokja withholds a smirk. “In that case, do you want to switch parts?”
“H-Hey! Moondae! What are you doing!? You should be helping him with what he's having trouble on, don't just give away your part like that!” Keun Sejin whisper-shouts, grasping Park Moondae’s shoulder.
Kim Dokja shakes his head. “No, it's okay to switch. It's better to do it earlier on if he's having difficulty.”
“T-Thank you, hyung!” Choi Wongil exclaims.
“No need to thank me. So, I’ll take your part in the bridge, okay?” Kim Dokja smiles. He seriously didn't expect me to be left with nothing, right?
“...Huh?” He mumbles.
“That's the part you said you couldn't do.” Kim Dokja tilts his head slightly. “So, I’ll take it.”
He wanted my part, yet he also wanted to keep his own? What the hell. Aigoo, I feel my headache returning. He can't hoard all the singing parts. But I don't want to become a target for evil editing, so this should be fine.
“W-Wait, that's true, but still…” Choi Wongil attempts to protest.
Keun Sejin glances at the two and quietly sighs. “Okay, then, the part will be like this. Now, all that's left is to choose the main dancer. Oh! Moondae, what did you have in mind for the new concept?”
“Ah, well, I was thinking we should first discuss the arrangement with the coaches, then we can decide the theme and choose our main dancer.” Kim Dokja replies.
“I-I think t-that's a good i-idea!” Seon Ahyun exclaims.
Keun Sejin nods. “Yeah, I agree.”
“I agree too!” Lee Heesung chimes in.
The group—besides Choi Wongil again—nods. This is good. Hopefully, they’ll now be more open to different ideas.
“Let’s get back to practicing for now.” Lee Sejin declares, standing up.
The others nod, and Keun Sejin outstretches his hand toward Park Moondae. Kim Dokja momentarily pauses before setting down the device and earbuds on the floor, slowly grasping his hand. Keun Sejin then pulls him to his feet, smiling at him as he moves to his designated place.
“...”
。。。
The meeting with the coach arrives two days later.
“You must have been very worried when you got this song, right?” He asks.
A few of the team members laugh awkwardly.
“Let's start by seeing what you’ve done.” He continues.
“Yes!”
They begin, and manage to finish the first verse choreography without any mistakes.
“How did everyone memorize the movements? Who got the choreography?” He inquires.
“Um, the team members who are a little more used to dancing and all together…”
“Yes, we all did it together!” Keun Sejin adds.
Ha Iljun was the one who took the charge, but Seon Ahyun helped us the most.
The choreography nods. “You’ve worked hard. But, none of you catch my eye. It’s bland. Look, team B was excited to do their choreography and has already memorized it all. This is a girl’s group choreography, so shouldn't you pick up the pace?”
Most of us only practiced the choreography, rather than the meaning of it. If we continue this way, it’ll stay the same, which is why it's important that we change the meaning.
“Well, you do have some kids who are below average…” He deliberately glances at Lee Sejin, who flinches and bows his head.
I barely even managed to memorize the choreography… And Lee Sejin worked even harder than us.
“And you, Seon Ahyun.”
“Y-Yes…?”
“I heard you majored in modern dance, but why is your expressiveness worse than Park Moondae’s?”
“...!” Kim Dokja flinches and Seon Ahyun’s expression falters. He taught us eighty percent of the choreography!
“That kid also sings better than you. Do you think people will go easy on you when you debut? Do you want to hear that you're worse at dancing than the kid who was chosen for singing?”
“A-Ah, I…”
His mental state already isn't good. This isn't helping. I want to speak up—for both of them—but I can't. It would be bad to start something with a coach. Kim Dokja firmly presses his hands to his sides.
“Anyway, you should think of another concept. Whether you arrange the song, or put an emphasis on the original, think about what you want to convey then perform it again.” He declares.
“Thank you…”
The team gloomily walks out of the room. A similar situation occurs with the vocal coach.
“Guys, what do you want to do?” She frustratedly taps on her keyboard.
“You don't seem like flower fairies at all. For this song, you must sing clearly and beautifully, so why does it sound like you're merely singing in tune? There’s no loveliness or dreaminess. Are you that embarrassed to sing it?” She asks.
She has a point. Our team is currently struggling. “We want to arrange it with a stronger feeling, since the song is so pure, it's a bit difficult to make it flow naturally.” Kim Dokja answers.
“If the arrangement seemed hard, you should have thought about trying to keep the original song as close as possible.”
“...” Aigoo.
She waves them off with one hand. “First, you have to know what direction you want to go in.”
。。。
After the advice from the coaches, the team comes together to discuss a new concept. Kim Dokja glances at everyone, noting the gloomy atmosphere.
Keun Sejin speaks up, interrupting their tense silence. “We worked really hard these past few days, and thanks to it we quickly learned the choreography. However, based on the feedback we received, we should decide on a new concept.”
Kim Dokja nods. “Did you have anything in mind?”
“Hm~ I think we should work hard to keep the song’s original meaning. We should try and emphasize the dashing charm of innocent, yet powerful, youth! It may be a little embarrassing, but it’ll be fun!” Keun Sejin answers.
“Ooh~”
“Ah! Kind of like the fancam where Youngrin Sunbae-nim is in the rain?” Lee Heesung asks.
“Yeah! Similar to that! This way, we can keep the concept mostly the same as the original.” Keun Sejin smiles.
He prepared for this. It’s what he wanted from the beginning. This concept better suits him, and the original one better suits Ahyun. Wow, he's quite meticulous, he's definitely fit for this industry.
“I see.” Kim Dokja says. “It's a good idea, but I’m worried that if we make a mistake it’ll seem like a mockery of the original song.”
“We just have to do our best to make sure it doesn't turn out like that!” Keun Sejin beams.
Kim Dokja nods. “Right, then–” before he can continue, he’s abruptly cut off.
“Isn't Moondae-hyung doing too much?” Choi Wongil suddenly speaks up.
“...?” What the hell? Is he trying to start something?
“Um, Wongil-ssi?” Keun Sejin asks.
“Do you have any good ideas?” He angrily spits out. “You may feel at ease because the trainers like you, but you also need to think about how the other members feel. If you just oppose it so blindly–”
“Ah, I actually don't have an issue with it,” Kim Dokja says. It seems he forgot that the cameras are on? “Rather, I do have an idea of my own?”
“...Yes?” He mumbles, his anger slightly dissipating.
“I’ve been thinking about it, and there's a way to go strong while still keeping the feeling of the original song.” Kim Dokja continues.
“...?”
“Really? Is that possible?” Lee Heesung asks.
“Ooh~ What is it?” Keun Sejin grins.
Kim Dokja smiles. “Let's mix it with horror.”
“...!”
“O-Oh! I-I think t-that’s a good i-idea!” Seon Ahyun says.
“I agree~!” Keun Sejin beams. “I think this choreography would be really scary if we added a horror concept!”
Several of the group members nod.
“It’s a bit embarrassing to say this right away,” Keun Sejin continues, sheepishly rubbing his nape. “But I like Moondae’s idea better.”
“Ah…” Kim Dokja mumbles, awkwardly averting his gaze.
“Wow! He gave up his opinion and switched!”
“As expected from a leader!”
Wow. I wasn't expecting that. He completely did a 180. I thought it would be better to do something more horror-oriented rather than fail at the original.
The atmosphere brightens, and the group members seem lighter than before.
“Ghost!” One of them shouts. “Let's go with ghosts! There's a story about a flower and a dead person.”
“What kind of horror movie is that? Ah! You know the movie with the black swan, if you do it with that creepy feeling–”
“Wow, the choreography would be scary if you did that.”
They continue chatting about the direction the choreography will take. Off to the side, however, Seon Ahyun sits with a gloomy expression.
“...” I should try to encourage him. It’s not fair that he and Lee Sejin—I’ll talk to him after—were singled out like that.
Kim Dokja quietly moves toward Seon Ahyun and sits down beside him. “Are you alright?” He asks.
“A-Ah, y-yeah, I’m f-fine.” He quickly shakes his head, a nervous smile on his lips.
“...Are you worried about what was said during the feedback evaluation?” Kim Dokja slightly tilts his head.
“I-I-I’m s-sorry… I-I’ll work h-harder…” He immediately apologizes.
“Please, don't misunderstand. There's really no need to apologize. The dance coach didn't say that because he thought I was better than you, it was meant to provoke you. I think it's because he was disappointed, since you can do better.”
“...” Seon Ahyun momentarily pauses, thinking over his words. “D-Do you…really t-think I-I can do w-well?” He quietly asks.
Kim Dokja nods. “Of course. Why would I lie?”
“T-Then…h-how can I-I do b-better…?” He trails off.
Is he…asking me for my opinion?
“...I think you're overthinking too much.” Kim Dokja says calmly. “It seems to me that you're thinking too much about things you don't need to be. Just think, ‘I’m going to make this happen,’ and you will.”
“...” Seon Ahyun appears to be lost in thought. After a few moments, he snaps out of it, meeting Kim Dokja’s gaze. “O-Okay, I-I’ll do it!”
Kim Dokja smiles at him. “I believe you can.”
Seon Ahyun returns the smile, and Kim Dokja averts his gaze. Suddenly, a window appears before him.
[‘I heard it's true (C)’ activated!]
- Target: Seon Ahyun
- Effect: Activation of characteristics by successful persuasion
Huh. I didn't expect it to activate, but it works out. Kim Dokja looks toward the middle, where everyone—besides three people—are continuing to collectively discuss the new concept. He glances over at Lee Sejin, noticing how he's away from the group, seemingly lost in his own thoughts.
“...” I should talk to him as well. Kim Dokja then stands, giving Seom Ahyun another smile before walking over to Lee Sejin. He sits down beside him and waits for a moment.
Lee Sejin looks up, jumping in surprise. “...!”
Kim Dokja smiles. He kind of reminds me of a cat. “Sorry. You seem a bit discouraged from earlier, are you alright?”
“...I’m fine.” Lee Sejin quietly replies while nodding.
“I see. Well, even so, I can tell you're working even harder than any of us. So, keep doing your best.” Kim Dokja smiles, lightly patting his shoulder.
“Ah…” His expression seems to subtly brighten, and he nods his head again. “Thank you. I will continue to work hard.” He slightly bows his head.
“I don't doubt it.” Kim Dokja replies.
He turns his attention back to the group, missing Lee Sejin’s expression shift. Ah, they're now talking about the arrangement.
“About my part of the arrangement…” Kim Dokja raises his hand.
“Oh, Moondae, what is it?” Keun Sejin asks.
Kim Dokja holds up the lyrics toward the group, and lightly taps on a specific section. “The bridge.” He smiles.
Choi Wongil’s eyes widen and his jaw drops.
Thanks for the part, I will put it to good use.

Chapter Text
During the days leading up to the big event, the group works hard to practice and memorize the song and the new choreography. And, finally, the day of their performance arrives. Huddling backstage, they're all mentally preparing themselves before they have to perform.
I’d be lying if I didn't say I’m a bit nervous. I’m confident we’ll perform well, but what I’m worried about is all the people watching us… Kim Dokja swallows his anxiety, taking a deep breath as he idly fidgets with his mic.
He momentarily pauses, listening to the team currently performing. We're up after them. They should almost be done. He scans the backstage area, noticing the only people are the staff bustling around and his group, who are visibly nervous.
Outwardly, Kim Dokja’s expression is composed; he's calm and collected. However, internally, he's regretting his life decisions and cursing this strange system. It's not too late to-
As if reminding him, a notification flashes in front of him.
[Park Moondae Incarnation Kim Dokja must debut.]
Yeah, yeah, I know. He quietly exhales, shaking his head. I seriously hate this thing. It threatens me with death, yet refuses to let me die, which…is strange. I wonder why that is. For entertainment, maybe? But, that would indicate that someone—or something—is in charge of this system.
Keun Sejin moves to stand beside Park Moondae, and he lightly nudges his shoulder. With a flinch, the latter snaps out of his thoughts, meeting Keun Sejin’s gaze.
Though his microphone is off, he still slightly shifts it away from his face as he speaks. “You nervous?”
Kim Dokja blinks. …I think I’m starting to get used to him sneaking up on me. He inwardly sighs. Although he's not outwardly showing it…
His thoughts pause for a moment, analyzing the other trainee's subtle actions. Keun Sejin’s hand remains glued to his side, a nervous tremble to it, while the one on Kim Dokja’s shoulder twitches once, then twice. His posture seems relaxed, but a closer look reveals that it's instead, faintly stiff.
I can tell he's nervous, too. He silently inhales at the thought. …Just when have we gotten so close for me to notice these things?
Kim Dokja belatedly realizes he’s taking too long to answer him. He shakes his head to clear thoughts, then hesitantly nods in response. “Aren't we all?”
Keun Sejin chuckles. “Yeah, you’re right. Even though I know we’ll do well, I still can't help but feel a little nervous.”
“That's understandable. But, as long as we do our best, we’ll be fine.” Well, you guys will. If I don't end up debuting through this show, I will wind up dead.
[Park Moondae Incarnation Kim Dokja must debut.]
I know already. This thing is so damn annoying.
Keun Sejin smiles at him, seemingly unaware of Kim Dokja’s internal struggle.
He briefly stretches his arms. “You ready?”
Kim Dokja nods in lieu of a response.
After that, everything becomes a blur. The group is ushered to the stage, and Kim Dokja moves to his assigned spot, where he hears the hushed whispers of the crowd. Though it's hard to see—due to how dark it is—Kim Dokja gazes out before him, faintly making out the collection of people surrounding the stage. He notices how some seem to be walking away, and they didn't seem to have high expectations for the team in general.
Finally, the music starts, and as the spotlights shine down on them, the group begins their performance. Gasps break out through the crowd, as this was definitely not what they were expecting. The spectators are swiftly captivated by the new—and quite horrific—take to this originally cheerful and girly performance. They couldn't take their eyes off the group, as if they're in a daze.
Despite all this, Kim Dokja doesn't know how to feel. As he sings, he feels a faint sensation that it brings, though he can't quite describe it. He doesn't even notice the crowd falling completely silent as he starts singing, as if completely entranced by his voice.
The song eventually comes to an end, and the group members catch their breaths. A beat passes, then another, and another. Suddenly, loud, supportive cheers erupt from the crowd. The noise filters through to Kim Dokja’s ears, and he blinks, coming back to his senses.
Ah… I think they liked it? The group members all stand up and pat each other's backs, or high five. Keun Sejin, in particular, wraps an arm around Park Moondae’s shoulders, grinning at him. This time, he doesn't even flinch.
Then, the team moves to thank the audience.
“Thank you!”
“T-Thank you, e-everyone!”
Kim Dokja finds the corners of his lips lifting into a small, genuine smile. I think it was worth it to invest in my vocals, since I ended up not bringing the entire group down.
They then exit the stage, and once out of the sight of the crowd, most of them collapse against a wall or fall to the floor.
“...” Kim Dokja blinks. Are they okay? It wasn't that bad, right? He lightly scratches his cheek, leaning against a wall.
Keun Sejin stands beside him, a big smile on his face. Kim Dokja glances at him, noticing his expression. It’s a bit embarrassing, but I have to keep doing this.
He stays quiet, hearing shouts of “Encore! Encore!” from the audience.
“...” Huh. The cheers for us seem louder than the ones for the previous teams.
After a moment, Keun Sejin speaks up. “Thank you for your hard work, everyone! We all did great!”
He beams, a camera pointed directly at him. This kid really has a knack for being conscious of cameras. He’s meant for this whole idol business, not me.
Kim Dokja nods. “Yes, it was fun. Thank you for your hard work.”
“Aw~ Moondae-yah!” Keun Sejin grins, leaning against Park Moondae’s shoulder.
Kim Dokja withholds his urge to push him away, and, instead, offers him a very small smile.
“I-I really e-enjoyed w-working with y-you all!” Seon Ahyun exclaims.
“Same here!” Ha Iljun chimes in.
“Honestly, we make a great team.” Lee Heesung smiles.
…They're a nice bunch of kids. I feel slightly bad now. I know they can't all debut—they know this as well—and yet, they still always give their best effort.
Kim Dokja nods. “Let's continue to work hard, then.”
“Y-Yes!”
。。。
After the second team’s performance, both groups are led back to the stage for some words before the audience officially votes.
The other team wasn't bad, however, it sucks for them since they’ll be compared to the song’s original singers. …I think it's better that we received a song by SquishySweet, rather than a popular one by VTIC.
“Ah, ‘October 31st’!” The MC gestures to Kim Dokja’s team. “You had such a thrilling and fun performance, like Halloween! That's what the team name means, right?”
“Yes!” Keun Sejin exclaims. “However, there's also another meaning.”
“What is it?” The MC asks.
“Like 31 flavors of ice cream, it means that each of us has a variety of charm!” He then makes a flower cup pose, briefly glancing at the other members to take a hint and quickly pose alongside him.
Kim Dokja merely makes a finger heart, holding it up in front of his cheek, and offering a small smile. This…should be good enough, right? Anything else is too embarrassing.
The crowd erupts into a mixture of cheers and squeals. Fortunately, the reaction isn't dull, and they seem to like it. Kim Dokja internally sighs. …This is what my life has been reduced to. I was perfectly content with my mundane life.
As the opposing group is introduced, the crowd cheers for them, though it's notably different than before. Glancing at the other team, Kim Dokja notices that they seem to be nervous. The only loud yells are for Ryu Chungwoo, not for the whole group together.
“Shareholders,” the MC exclaims, “please express what's on your mind! Vote for the group you think did better! Team number 1, ‘October 31st’ or team number 2, ‘Mountain Hero’.”
As soon as the crowd votes, the MC then announces for a new vote. “Now, choose one participant from each group, one who you liked the most! Again, one person per team, two people total.”
The reward for the individual chosen is exemption from elimination. They told us before the stage rehearsal, and many teams complained about it—not that I blame them. Thankfully, ‘October 31st’ didn't have any issues regarding this. We surprisingly worked well together, and besides the few hiccups at the start, no major conflicts arose.
The MC thanks the crowd once more before the participants are led off the stage.
。。。
Filming finally comes to an end at around midnight. Currently, Kim Dokja is in his dorm room, somewhat messily packing his luggage.
They announced that the individual match results will be shown at the ranking ceremony, which is to be expected, as they did this last season. Well, it's good that we at least won the team match with 413 to 70 votes, so we should be safe this time around.
Kim Dokja’s phone faintly buzzes in his pocket, it’s been going off quite a bit in the last few minutes alone. …That reminds me, they made a group chat for our ‘October 31st’ team. I wasn't keen on the idea, but I didn't want to dampen their mood, so I ended up giving them my number.
He quietly sighs. I wouldn't have done that if I’d known they’d be blowing up my phone. I should probably silence it-
Keun Sejin suddenly places his hand on Park Moondae’s shoulder. “Moondae-yah~ you did great today.”
Kim Dokja subtly flinches, turning his head toward the trainee. …There goes my plans of leaving quietly. He’s probably going to threaten me to respond to the group chat.
“Thank you. You did, too. You're a good leader.” Kim Dokja replies.
Keun Sejin’s lips curl up into a teasing smile. “I was a good leader, hm?”
Kim Dokja merely raises an eyebrow.
“Kidding, kidding!” Keun Sejin beams, releasing his hand from Park Moondae’s shoulder, and takes a step back.
Kim Dokja sighs quietly. His phone buzzes, and he resists the urge to silence it. Keun Sejin, however, grabs his own phone, glances at the notification, then turns toward Park Moondae.
“Hey, Moondae. Let's keep in touch!” He smiles, a knowing look in his eyes.
Kim Dokja nods. “Yeah.”
Seon Ahyun suddenly appears beside Keun Sejin. “M-Me too! L-Let’s all k-keep in t-touch!”
Kim Dokja nods again. “Sounds good.”
At least these two are the least troublesome. I can't say the same for the others…
“Should we create a group chat for just the three of us?” Keun Sejin asks. “It’d be nice to have one with people the same age.”
Same age-? Kim Dokja pauses. Oh. Right. Including Park Moondae, these two are also twenty.
“Y-Yes!” Seon Ahyun exclaims.
Kim Dokja zips up his luggage and places it on the floor. He grasps the handle, grateful it has wheels.
“I’m going now.” He says, offering the two a wave.
“Bye, Moondae! Stay safe.”
“S-Stay s-safe!” Seon Ahyun exclaims, waving back.
Kim Dokja exits the room, walking down the building’s halls, and making it outside. He feels a buzzing coming from his phone, so he grabs it, glancing at the notification. He notices it's from the newly created group chat with him, Keun Sejin, and Seon Ahyun.
Kim Dokja feels a distant emotion flickering in his chest. Those two are too kind for their own good. Why are they bothering with someone like me?
He frowns, quietly sighing. Well, I’ll silence all the group chats later, so it doesn't matter.
。。。
Kim Dokja sits on his bed, staring at the floating notification window beside him. Now, it's time to deal with this.

It seems I can draw better characteristics the higher my impression rate is? That, or for the more people I impress. I also leveled up quite a bit, but I don't know how I should distribute my stats.
He shakes his head. I’ll figure that out later. For now, I’ll draw a new characteristic.
He taps the draw button, and a familiar wheel appears. He spins it, and once more, it stops on a brass colored slot. Kim Dokja quietly sighs. Figures. These machines are rigged in the first place.
[Characteristic: ‘Look at me! (D)’ Aquired!]
People pay a little more attention to your actions.
He stares blankly at the pop-up. Why would I want that!? If anything, I want people to pay less attention.
He sighs again. I guess it’ll be good for this whole idol show debuting thing, but still.
He pauses, staring off into space. The first episode is supposed to air soon, and all the trainees are supposed to go to the set to watch it together.
His stomach faintly growls, reminding him that he hasn't eaten. I’m running a bit low on food, but I should be fine for a little longer.
His phone suddenly buzzes, snapping him out of his thoughts. He grabs his phone and looks at the notification.
…I thought I muted all the group chats. However, it wasn't a group chat, but rather a private message.
Keun Sejin: Moondae-yah, are you ignoring the group chats?
Kim Dokja suppresses a sigh. Is it too much to ask to be left alone?
Park Moondae: I’m reading the messages.
How troublesome. Well, that should be a good enough response. However, that doesn't seem to be the end of the conversation, as the trainee immediately types a reply.
Keun Sejin: You're so cold to not respond ㅋㅋㅋ
Keun Sejin: Please reply to my question in the group chat!
Kim Dokja withholds another sigh. I really shouldn't have given out my number.
Keun Sejin: Now that I’m thinking about it, Moondae gets more handsome each time I see him ㅎ
Keun Sejin: Moondae-yah, please share your dermatologist!
…Seriously? He privately messaged me for this? Why?
Park Moondae: I don't have one.
Before anyone could type, another message pops up in the group chat.
Seon Ahyun: Moondae-yah, how are you doing? Thank you for treating me well. I’ll be sure to repay you next time we meet!
The message continues after that. A sharp pang goes through Kim Dokja’s chest. He didn't deserve these kind words, they should be directed toward someone else. Feeling guilty, he types back a reply he deems okay.
Park Moondae: Thank you, Ahyun-ah.
Something simple, not complicated or long. Although, even a ‘thank you’ can't convey how appreciative he is for Seon Ahyun—or even Keun Sejin. He really doesn't deserve them, and he doesn't understand why they want to be friends with him.
Chapter 5: The General in the Particular (1)
Notes:
"expect a chapter within the next two weeks!" i'm such a liar, i'm sorry guys. i was busy with school, but i'm back and ready to crank out more chapters more consistently! expect 1-2 chapters a month now!
this chapter has not yet been beta read!! when i have time, i'll go back and update my earlier chapters. also, thank you all so much for the love, support, and kudos!! you all give me the motivation to continue this <3
enjoy the slight angst (and mostly filler) for the next... (checks notes) ...5 or so chapters, because once we get into my favorite events, we really get into the angst :)
Chapter Text
The promotional event isn't as bad as Kim Dokja thought it would be. All they (he and the other participants) have to do is sing the program’s intro song, 〈It’s Me〉, as well as have photos taken for them. Considering all the other events they've had to put up with, Kim Dokja is somewhat grateful for this small break. As long as he's paid for this.
Although, the pictures are arguably the most important part. From what Kim Dokja has learned about this show, the photos of the participants can play a major part in predicting early votes. Normally they tend to favor more well-known candidates or those with a good face card.
Speaking of visuals… my stat should be at around B still, which is above average. However, it's not good enough to stand out compared to some others. Yet, it's decent enough to pass without completely fading into the background or being too noticed.
If I were to spend my remaining points on my appearance, I could raise my stat to an A, but that might raise suspicions and cause me to stand out more. That could also lead to more problems than I’d like. So, it's fine for now.
“We’ll start after the reporters enter!” a staff member shouts.
Kim Dokja snaps out of his thoughts, shaking his head. He moves to stand in his assigned position. I stretched earlier, so I should be fine not stretching now.
“I saw your performance.” a voice suddenly says.
Kim Dokja pauses, turning his attention to the red-head standing before him. “...Huh?”
He blinks at him. If I remember correctly, his name is Cha Eugene. Wait, is he referring to what I said last time we spoke?
“You did a great job!” he smiles, giving him a thumbs up.
“Ah, thank you.” Kim Dokja replies. That's a relief.
“Let's team up next time.” Cha Eugene continues.
“That would be nice if possible.” he nods. It wouldn't be a bad idea to stick around him. Though, there's a chance that it might be empty words.
Cha Eugene beams, and with that, retreats to his spot in the formation.
“D-Do you want some?” Seon Ahyun asks after the other trainee leaves, holding out a packet of jelly.
Kim Dokja blinks, turns his head toward him. “Oh, sure. Thank you.”
“Wha- Hey! Ahyun-ah, you don't have any for me?” Lee Sejin exclaims.
“H-Here,” Seon Ahyun shares some with him as well, causing the other to immediately brighten.
Kim Dokja withholds a sigh at the trainee’s antics.
“Get ready~!” a staff member announces.
Time to focus. If I mess up it will be plastered all over social media.
。。。
“Moondae!” a woman’s voice calls out to him, as soon as he walks toward the building’s exit.
He turns, blinking at the woman holding a camera. What do I do-
“Moondae! Can you make a heart, please!?” she exclaims, pressing on her camera’s shutter button.
Never in Kim Dokja’s life did he ever think he would hear those words. Swallowing his shame and embarrassment—he threw that all away as soon as he went down this path—he makes a heart with his fingers.
“Poke your cheek too!”
He averts his gaze, noticing Seon Ahyun attempting to sneak out unnoticed. The trainee meets his eye and freezes, like a deer caught in headlights, which honestly seems like a fitting image for him.
After a moment, he awkwardly shuffles to stand beside Kim Dokja. Sorry, but there's no way I’m doing this alone.
Suddenly, Keun Sejin appears, placing his hands on the two’s shoulders. “Oh~ Are you guys taking pictures~?”
Kim Dokja withholds a flinch, nodding in response. This should be fine. People may think that we're close because of this.
“Oh, how cute! Can you all make a heart?” the photographer asks, raising her camera.
What did I get myself into? he internally sighs.
。。。
Finally, the awaited day of the first episode airing arrives. It plays for roughly 2 hours straight as a special program. Since the participants were required to watch this together, they didn't move from their chairs during this time. Although, they seem to be more concerned over their screen time rather than the other fact.
Not that I blame them… But, still, it's pretty uncomfortable to be sitting in these metal chairs for so long. Though, it feels weird to see Park Moondae… myself? On screen. It's me, but it's not me. It reminds me of an out of body experience.
“Moondae-yah! Look, it's you!” Lee Sejin lightly shakes his shoulder as he appears on screen.
Kim Dokja merely nods. “Yes, I see that.”
Ignoring the exclamations from his peers, he instead focuses on the way the episode is edited. …It seems like they're twisting my words a bit? What kind of concept are they trying to sell?
He hardly pays any mind to the online comments of others. As soon as he grabs the microphone on screen and the music begins, it's suddenly interrupted by an ad break.
“Ah, don't worry too much.” Lee Sejin says, gently patting his shoulder.
“A-Are you okay?” Seon Ahyun quietly asks.
It might be because of all the cameras, but the atmosphere seems more lively. The viewers don't seem to be too happy though. Kim Dokja merely nods. “As long as it's aired.”
The ad eventually comes to an end, and the scene shifts to how it was before. The comments seem to still be upset, especially with an “ordinary person” concept in the show. However, as soon as Kim Dokja opens his mouth and sings, people's opinions flip a whole 180.
They edited this in a way that's favorable to me… They overdramatized it quite a lot though. With this, I might be able to stay on the show a little longer.
Soon, the screen shifts back to Park Moondae, but this time, for his dancing portion. Kim Dokja internally cringes. What has my life come to? At least my dancing is decent and I didn't embarrass myself. The comments seem to think so too, though they seem to prefer my singing, and, oddly enough, my looks?
Two pop-up windows suddenly assault his vision.

With a single broadcast, the number jumped to 50,000 people? I guess I made that much of an impression on so many people, somehow. Public opinion seems to be good, for the most part. Next time, I should be extra careful to not allow them to twist my words so easily.
Soon enough, the broadcast comes to an end, with the show having a much higher and positive rating than before.
。。。
From what I understand, this PR video we’re doing is supposed to be a filler before the ranking announcements. Since this is being broadcast live, many participants seem more determined than ever to make a favorable impression.
“I’m really nervous,” Keun Sejin says.
Kim Dokja turns toward the trainee, raising an eyebrow. He doesn't seem very nervous, but maybe he's hiding that from the cameras. He opens his mouth to reply, but before he could, the MC interrupts him.
“Ah, hold on. I think I missed something. This live broadcast is not just for you!” He opens his arms wide, a large grin on his face. “Each of you should choose a collaboration product to advertise and promote yourself with!”
Kim Dokja felt all words escape him. These greedy bastards. Do they have no shame?
The MC continues. “It may feel like a burden to do this, but please remember that it can be used to show off your charm to viewers!”
Murmurs break out through the crowd of trainees, all attempting to guess how exactly they will receive these items.
“This will be done… via a treasure hunt!” he answers.
“Huh?”
“What?”
The MC grins at the crowd’s confusion. “Our crew hid circular objects throughout the building. All you have to do is find one! You have 15 minutes!”
“Oh~? I think this’ll be fun,” Keun Sejin smiles whilst nodding.
“...Sure,” Kim Dokja says, feeling far more apprehensive about it. There has to be some kind of catch, like-
Before he could finish that thought, the MC suddenly speaks up again. “Also! Similar to the audition program, the treasure will have assigned grades. Keep that in mind and check them carefully!”
Figures. They probably have the same grades then, likely consisting of bronze, silver, and gold.
“Now, get ready,” the MC briefly pauses. “Go!!”
Immediately, almost all of the participants rush out of the building, heading toward the dorms. It’d be unwise to follow the crowd. Instead, it’d be better to start searching somewhere else.
However, Keun Sejin and Ha Iljoon stay back as well, making the decision to stick with Kim Dokja. He glances at the two, withholding a sigh, then points toward the room’s back door. “Let's check this way first.”
“Let's go~!” Keun Sejin beams while Ha Iljun nods.
。。。
The first treasure they found was a silver sphere, not exactly a ball. The two trainees huddle beside Kim Dokja, their eyes trained on the object.
“Hm, I think the grade is divided by bronze, silver, and gold. Is that right, Moondae-yah~?” Keun Sejin asks.
Why are you asking me? “I assume so.” Kim Dokja lightly shrugs. “Let's hurry and finish. The others will be here soon.”
“Yes~!”
“Right!”
The trio makes their way to the storage room, wordlessly splitting up and looking around, searching from the top to the bottom.
“If we think about where the production crew would hide it,” Keun Sejin muses aloud, moving toward a particular area. “Hmm, here?”
He reaches toward the pencil case, grabbing a bronze sphere right in front of a camera.
“Woah, bronze?” Ha Iljun smiles lightly.
“How unlucky,” he sighs.
It's honestly a bit too obvious where they hid the items. Where there's a camera, there's guaranteed to be one nearby. They’re also not extremely hidden, so they’re easy to find.
“Ah, I found a silver one! Should we look somewhere else now?” Keun Sejin asks.
“Yeah!”
Kim Dokja nods. “Yes. Let's head to the restaurant next. There's a camera over there.”
“You have good eyes.” Ha Iljun says.
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything. He shakes his head, making his way to the restaurant, while the other two trail behind him. Once again, they split up, investigating the different areas with cameras.
Kim Dokja stops at a box with utensils, opening it up and pulling out a gold sphere. “Found one.”
“Wow! It's a gold one.” Ha Iljun blinks, staring at the object.
“Moondae-yah, you were the first to find a gold one. You must have a golden hand.” Keun Sejin smiles. “You must've been born with luck~”
Me, lucky? I’m the complete opposite of lucky, in fact, I’m more inclined to believe I’m surrounded by misfortune. If I was lucky, then I wouldn't be stuck in this situation in the first place.
He shakes his head. “I hear people coming.”
“Oh,” Ha Iljun murmurs.
The trio quickly leave the restaurant, moving to continue their search upstairs. Once done, they found a total of 10 spheres.
“We found 4 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze.” Keun Sejin says, holding them out in his palms.
Ha Iljun nods. “Yeah. I think we should give Moondae another gold one instead of silver. What do you think?”
“Yes, that's a good idea.” he smiles.
If that's the case, then they can have the rest. Kim Dokja grabs two gold spheres. “I won't take any bronze ones then. Take two each.”
“Okay!”
“Thank you, Moondae-yah!” Keun Sejin beams.
As the other two distribute their assigned items, an announcement blares through the speakers. “There are 3 minutes left!”
Already at the meeting point, the trio glance around, watching as the other participants trickle in. I think it's time to open these up.
“Should we open them too?” Ha Iljun asks.
“Yes,” Keun Sejin smiles, beginning to open his own.
Kim Dokja nods, slowly unfastening the lids and pulling them open. He pauses, staring blankly at the words written inside them.
Guitar and a flower crown? What am I supposed to do with these? I can't play the guitar, and there's no way in hell I’m wearing a flower crown. I thought these would be better since they're gold, yet they're like this…
He shakes his head, looking up and scanning the room. I’m going insane. I should try and switch with someone.
“There are 20 seconds left!” the MC announces.
The room suddenly turns into a war zone, with more people rushing in and many others trying to trade for a better word. Kim Dokja quietly sighs. There's no way I’m breaking through that crowd. His eye catches sight of Seon Ahyun’s pale face, staring at a bronze sphere in his hands.
“Ahyun!” Kim Dokja immediately makes his way over toward him, avoiding the crowd as he calls out to him.
The trainee whips his head around, knitting his eyebrows together. “M-Moondae-?”
“Do you know how to play the guitar?” Kim Dokja rushes out as the MC counts down from 10.
“I, u-uh, y-yes-”
“Do you like flowers?” he continues.
“Y-Yes-”
“Perfect. Do you want to trade then?” Kim Dokja asks, already pushing his two gold spheres into Seon Ahyun’s hands and taking his bronze one.
“H-Huh?” he mumbles, staring wide-eyed and confused at Kim Dokja.
“And 1! The treasure hunt is now over!”
He looks down at the bronze object in his palms, letting out a relieved sigh. The word “book” is written on it. It was a good trade. There's no way I’ll get criticized for this, right?
。。。
On the WeTube channel, the PR video begins live at 20:00, as scheduled.
[-It’s live]
[-I can't watch it because I’m working overtime today. Please relay the number of viewers. Who is in first place?]
└[-Cha Eugene! There's a thousand times difference between first and last place. ㅋㅋㅋㅋ I see several people in last place. Poor things ㅠ]
[-Wongil did apple hair ㅠㅠㅠ Everyone, come see us]
[-Seon Ahyun wore a flower crown. His face is so pretty.]
Many posts promoting the different participants start flooding the comments.
[-Huh? Who’s filming a live novel reading?]
└[-? What do you mean?]
└[-He’s reading it so passionately, it's hard to believe it's PR]
└[-Wait, in the self-introduction stream?]
└[-It’s real: (link)]
“Hello,” Kim Dokja waves, holding up a novel in his other hand.
[-Moondae, are you reading to us?]
[-Isn't this a self-introduction video? What’s with the light novel?]
[-Why did you choose this? Was it a penalty? ㅋㅋㅋ]
[-ahhh I really want to ask a question ㅠㅠ]
[-Wait, isn't that The Ultimate SSS-Grade Tower Conquerer?]
└[-It is]
└[-Yes. I was not expecting to see this here.]
[-He might read the whole first chapter to us!]
[-This was not on my bingo card this year, but I’m interested regardless]
“It's a light novel, though it's quite long, so I won't be able to finish it all in 10 minutes. But, I’ll read as much as I can to you all.” he continues, making himself comfortable in his chair as he opens the book and begins to read it aloud.
It's a relatively generic novel, with noticeable cliches evident from the beginning. However, the concept reminds him of a story he read in his previous life, The World After the Fall, which seems to revolve around similar themes.
[-Is he a former WeTube novel reviewer?]
[-Woah… I’ve heard that the novel is bad, but the way Moondae is reading it makes me want to hear more!]
[-Moondae, please never stop talking! Your voice is so soothing]
[-Do you like reading? You seem so lively when you read!]
[-This side of Moondae is so cute!]
[-Even though the novel’s meh, Moondae tells the story in such a compelling way]
[-I could listen to a Moondae video essay for hours]
He pauses every so often to talk about what works well—while blatantly ignoring all the plot holes—and how literary devices, character actions, or story events serve a larger purpose to contribute to the overall narrative. Since he’s unable to see the comments, he's unable to determine the reactions.
[-Our Moondae may lack social skills, but he's a good kid.]
[-Ah, he's so pure to look past the bad and focus on the good parts!]
└[-Agreed! Even if it's PR]
[-He’s so cute! I like hearing his opinions on the story]
[-I thought it was confusing until you explained it, now it makes a whole lot more sense!]
[-Moondae, you should talk more about yourself instead]
He blinks as he notices the view count steadily increasing, eventually passing 10,000, and his stream enters the top 5. “Ah… There's so many viewers…” he mumbles. “Thank you all. I hope you're enjoying this. I’ll do my best.”
He bows his head, swiftly returning to reading aloud and occasionally adding his own input to the story.
[-We're definitely enjoying this!]
[-Please continue]
[-Read to us more often please!]
[-Moondae, you should talk more about yourself, like what novels have you read before?]
[-He has such a nice voice. No wonder he sings well.]
As he finishes the first chapter and talks about his thoughts on the light novel so far, the alarm clock on the table goes off. “...Oh. Time’s up.”
Only the top viewed streams receive an extra 5 minutes, as well as a special gift. He gives a slight nod as a farewell to his viewers. “This might be the end of the stream. Thank you all for watching.”
[-Nooooo! This can't be the end!! ㅠㅠ]
[-Wait! Please sing for us once before you leave!]
[-It’s okay Moondae, you're cute]
[-He’s good at singing and good at reading. I’m happy because of you.]
[-Everyone’s so into it, it's really funny ㅋㅋㅋㅋ]
The device suddenly shows a ringing bell. “Oh, I think the results are out.”
He grabs his phone, checking his text message from the production team.
[-That’s an old-fashioned phone.]
[-Huh, he's frugal.]
[-If you use an old phone, people are drawn to it?]
[-Everyone must be crazy ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ]
[-Noona will buy you a nicer phone. So, Moondae, please debut ㅠㅠ]
“Ah, I’m in the top 33, so I can continue the stream. Thank you.” he says quietly. With an extra 5 minutes, should I do something a little different?
Suddenly, his phone rings again, so he quickly checks the text. He blinks, then reads it aloud for the viewers.
“There's an announcement from the production team. They said… 'There's now a gift for participants, which is communication with the viewers. Viewer donations are now available. Participants can check the donation pop-up with a threshold amount of…’” he swallows. “‘...10,000 won or more.’”
10,000 won would’ve been enough to buy myself a meal for a week. Yet, here these greedy producers are, manipulating people into giving them so much money. Why would anyone spend this much for something like this?
[-My boy hesitated at the price, he must be keen on saving money]
[-10,000 won? I guess they set the price that high to block aggros]
[-Hey, what kind of donation is that? It's just to save the participants' faces anyway. ;;]
[-If I pay the price of a novel, will Moondae read to us again?]
Kim Dokja blinks as he sees a donation suddenly pop up. Someone is actually willing to pay for this-? Despite his thoughts, he reads the donation aloud. “Ah, thank you 123-nim.”
-Why did you choose to read a novel?
Their name reminds me of TWSA’s author, tls123. “Ah, well, my item keyword was a book,” he pauses, glancing at the novel’s cover. “Out of all the light novels offered, this one seemed the most interesting to me.”
[-Wow, how shady]
[-That's so shameless to promote such an unoriginal novel]
[-I’m kind of curious about the other book options now]
[-^ Me too!]
[-Did you read them all?]
[-You seem familiar with these types of stories]
The donations then start pouring in, rapid-fire. He reads them all, then answers them one at a time.
-What's your favorite novel?
Kim Dokja pauses for a moment. It would feel weird to say anything besides TWSA, but since it doesn't exist here, I should say something else that does, or something more vague. “I’m not too picky about stories, but I enjoy ones like… this one.”
[-In that case, I feel like you would enjoy The World After the Fall!!]
[-Woah, isn't that on naver?]
└[-Yes!]
└[-I think it's a webnovel and webcomic]
[-Regression and apocalyptic themes are my favorite as well!]
He gently taps on the book, reading the next donation.
-Which participant are you closest to?
“Hm. It’ll be a spoiler if I answer that.” he replies, a small smile on his lips.
[-He’s very thorough ㅋㅋㅋ]
[-It’s true that you have close friends, right? This Noona believes in you! *^^*]
[-But Seon Ahyun said he was close to you in his broadcast ㅋㅋㅋ]
[-ㅋㅋㅋㅋ I got it, Moondae, are you close with Ahyun?]
It wouldn't do me any good to talk about any of the participants directly. It could cause unwanted trouble.
-Please introduce yourself ㅋㅋㅋ
There's not much to say about himself, especially since this isn't exactly his body. So, he settles on saying something simple. “I like stories. I’m just a reader.”
[-He’s so cute ㅠㅠ]
[-Is there really nothing else?]
[-No, I get it. I really enjoy reading too]
[-Our Moondae is too precious ㅠㅠㅠ]
-Moondae_please_sing_one_verse ㅠㅠ
-Is there a secret to singing well?
“Ah, singing,” he murmurs.
[-Finally]
[-Has his idol ego awakened?]
[-Moondae, your singing is really good ㅠㅠ]
[-It was good on the show, but how will it be live?]
This will be so embarrassing, but then maybe they'll stop asking me to sing, Kim Dokja thinks to himself. He takes a deep breath, then begins singing the broadcast’s theme song.
[-Wow, Park Moondae is a professional]
[-Isn’t he a more sincere participant than anyone else?]
[-He’s really unpredictable. This is not the way a criminal thinks.]
[-I’m going crazy.]
[-You're so good at singing]
[-It's amazing to hear even without music]
[-Good job, Moondae, please sing another song now ㅠㅠ]
Right as he reaches the chorus, the alarm on the desk suddenly rings, causing him to abruptly stop singing. “Ah, the time is up.”
[-No, if you cut it off here…!]
[-Of all things, right before the chorus ㅋㅋ]
[-Ah! It's so frustrating! I’ll finish singing it then!! Ahh!]
[-Doesn't this make you want to watch episode 2? Moondae-nim is really serious about this program.]
[-I wish you could sing even one more verse ㅠㅠ]
-I love your voice!
A delayed donation suddenly comes in. Kim Dokja slightly smiles. “Thank you.”
Then, the screen abruptly turns to black. [The live is over.]
[-???]
[-What?]
[-I think it's over?]
[-The production team ended the broadcast altogether]
Thus marks the end of the PR live streams.
。。。
Finally back at Park Moondae’s apartment, Kim Dokja lays on his bed, reviewing the episode 2 broadcast.
It doesn't seem too bad, but they make it seem as if I’m naturally talented. I sacrificed so much sleep just to learn the choreography, and Ahyun and Sejin helped me. I understand better than anyone else that I’m just ordinary, but they keep trying to push this particular image.
At least, from what I’ve seen, public opinion of me doesn't seem too bad. More people than I thought seemed to—oddly enough—like my story reading.
Suddenly his phone buzzes, and a notification pops up on his screen. He hesitantly taps on it, sitting up as he reads it.
Keun Sejin: Moondae, what do you think about watching episode 3 together with our team?
His mind whirls, already trying to think of a good excuse to use to get out of going. However, before he can type one out, the trainee sends another message.
Keun Sejin: You’ll be the only one missing. Even Lee Sejin Hyung-nim said he would come too!
Did they all already agree to this? If I were to be left out, I would definitely become a target for evil editing and rumors. He quietly sighs, shaking his head, then hesitantly sends a response.
Park Moondae: Yeah, I’ll go.
Keun Sejin: I knew you would agree~ See you then, Moondae-yah! ㅎㅎ
Why did I agree to this? Kim Dokja asks himself, already regretting his decision.
