Chapter 1: Visit to the Dream Spring
Chapter Text
Approaching during the dark of night, a large battleship hovered near the Fountain of Dreams. A winged knight with a mask of metal flying down to the shining, crystalline ground. Upon landing, he wrapped himself in his cape, looking up at King Dedede with stone cold neutrality. Despite standing on equal ground, the king was three times the size of the knight. They were standing at the Fountain of Dreams, also known as the Dream Spring. The Star Rod missing from its rightful place. As the knight had expected from the call he received.
“You came.” King Dedede said.
“You almost sound surprised, my King.” Meta Knight said, level voiced.
“I just figured… Augh, never mind! I got somethin’ I need you to do.” He pulled out a little item from his coat. A shard of the Star Rod, glowing a soft, sad yellow.
Such a shame you became this… Meta Knight thought, remaining steel faced.
“I’m sure you recognize it. Even when busted up like this.”
Meta Knight nodded.
“Make sure you write this down, ‘cause I’mma be nice an’ say this twice for you. Keep it safe, make sure others don’ snatch it. Especially Kirby.” King Dedede said as he held out the fragment of the Star Rod.
“What is so special about this Kirby person that has you bringing them up by name again?” Meta Knight already knew why. He had already heard the news of Kirby’s previous exploits. He managed to beat the very king he was speaking to, getting all the food and sparkling stars back. He had expected something like this for some time, both King Dedede doing something notably tyrannical and his eventual fall due to that tyranny.
He didn’t expect them to happen on the same day, though. Still, he is thankful that nobody starved too badly during the event. As for this Kirby person, they might have something in them. To be able to beat the king, as much of a dolt he is, is still quite a feat to accomplish. They're either as clever as the masked knight himself, or just absurdly strong.
“Uh- J-just don’ think he got what it takes ta handle the Star Rod. It’s better this way.” Dedede said, turning away.
Lying now, are we king? What have you gotten yourself into this time? Meta Knight thought. “I would like to divulge my judgment, but I’m afraid that you need to be more clear with your reasoning. Is there an explanation for why the Star Rod needed to be broken apart?”
“‘Cause the fountain doesn’ need it no more! That’s final!” He huffed, crossing his arms with a pout.
Meta Knight narrowed his eyes.
Finally, King Dedede relented with a sigh. “Fine, fine, I’ll tell you. There’s someone named Nightmare in the Fountain of Dreams. He tried ta corrupt it. But without the Star Rod, he’s stuck there. It’s the best way ta keep him locked up. He can’t hurt anyone the way he is now.”
A small gasp got the better of him, turning to the Fountain of Dreams. Now that he’s actually focusing on it, he can sense the dark energy lurking inside the fountain. It was difficult to tell over the profound, soothing aura the fountain itself emanated. But it was there. Ominous and dark. It’s no wonder the serpent guardian was missing.
“... I see. Your call seems necessary. I shall take a fragment for myself, my King.” Meta Knight said, facing King Dedede.
He nodded, handing the piece to the steel faced warrior. “Good. I know you’ll defend it all you can. As one of the best fighters around… I’ll be real here. You’re one of the best swordsmen I know. I can’t think of anyone more trustworthy with somethin’ as important as this.
Besides myself, of course!” He haphazardly tacked on. Letting out a forced laugh.
Still, the compliment had an effect. Meta Knight’s cloak shuffled slightly, hiding the growing warmth in his heart. A buried piece of him emerged to drink up the bittersweet words. He was swift to press it down, burying it deeper once more.
“... Thank you, my King. I shall give my all to my duty.” Which shall be to prepare Kirby for the battle against Nightmare. There might be some real skill within him to accomplish such a thing.
Dedede nodded to this, holding out the Star Rod fragment once more. Meta Knight taking the piece and departing swiftly. Briefly divulging where he will be: at Orange Ocean.
It was a typical peaceful day, just past lunch. Kirby had finished his hearty fill and went for a nap, as did many others at this time, to escape the more uncomfortable heat of the noon hours. Ready for sweet, blissful dreams.
…
For whatever reason, they never came. He came to a sluggish wake, rubbing his eyes. Looking out the window. It was later than the typical time he wakes up, but he still feels drained for whatever reason. He had tossed and turned and tossed and turned and flipped and flopped all over his bed just to get comfortable! He can’t recall anything from the nap either. Usually he has something, even if it was just a snippet of having an icecream sundae. This time there was just… nothing.
Oh well. Probably just a bad nap. He still felt a wary sense inside him reaching for the alarm bells, but it might just be him feeling sluggish. He’s had bad naps before, and he recalls being a bit moody afterwards. Perhaps a fresh meal and a walk would help wake him up.
Removing his cap (even though it was barely on his head now), he tried to push off the sheets. Keyword here is try. At some point he got tangled in bed, and had to weave himself and the blanket apart. To compare what the experience was like, it was like detangling wired earbuds.
After spending too much time to stumble out of bed, he finally exited his home. Letting out a sigh. Whether it was relief or exhaustion was anyone’s guess.
He milled about, wandering the flower fields he called home. He grabbed an apple from a tree and snacked on it, hoping for a bit of pep. Wandering the open landscape, he took the time to breathe in the warm air. A gentle breeze ensured that it didn’t became unbearably hot. Slowly, a smile crept up on his face. Perhaps not bounding with energy as usual, but he was in a good mood again. Some sleep tonight will do him well.
As he wandered, he noticed a few friends of his. He called out and gave them a wave, jogging up to them.
“Hey there, what are you three doing?” Kirby asked.
“Hey Kirby.” Knuckle Joe said, sitting amongst the flowers in a stiff, upright position. “Had any dreams during your nap?” He asked in a serious manner. He was usually a pretty laid back fellow, though an intense fighter, making this sudden seriousness jarring to say the least.
Slightly off put by the tension, “Uh… No. It was a pretty rough sleep in all honesty.”
Knuckle Joe turned to the two others sitting next to him, “Welp, that confirms it. Something is definitely going on around here.”
“What is? Did you all have a bad sleep too?”
Birdon nodded, feathers bristling. “Yeah, it was really weird. I have a tough time staying asleep from time to time, but hardly do I ever wake multiple times in a single day! It’s like my body just couldn’t stay asleep. I certainly didn’t get any dreams…”
Poppy Bro Jr said, “Me too. I didn’t wake up multiple times, more of just struggled to relax and rest. Even though I was tired, I felt restless! Didn’t get a wink of sleep.”
Knuckle Joe joined in, “I had something similar to Poppy. Just couldn’t get to sleep, even after meditation. Do you know what this could mean?”
Kirby hummed, brow furrowing. This can’t be good. It’s not just me who's been having a bad sleep, but multiple people! Has this been affecting everyone? He turned to the surroundings, getting a glimpse at the people nearby. Indeed, it was much quieter than what he was used to. Normally there was flitting laughter, a lighthearted brawl, a game of some kind, or at least something going on that filled the air with pleasant noise. It felt like a ghost town with the eerie silence hanging over everything.
Something had to be done. “I’ll head over to the Dream Spring. If there’s anything that can fix a problem as widespread as this, it’s the Fountain of Dreams.” Kirby said.
Poppy Bro Jr perked hearing this, “Oh yeah, the fountain! There’s probably something there that can fix this!”
Knuckle Joe nodded, “Sounds like a good plan. The Dream Spring is either the solution, the problem, or even both.”
“I hold my hopes on solution…” Birdon perked in realization, turning to Kirby. “Say! Didn’t you receive a blessing from the Fantasia Serpent last time you visited? Maybe she’ll recognize you!”
Kirby chuckled at the memory, “Yep! I was pretty young back then, though. I’d rather not bother her if I can help it, I’ve heard she likes time to herself. I’ll just check on the Dream Spring real quick to make sure nothing bad is going on. If I don’t come back today, assume I’m out on a journey and watch over my house. I got watermelon there and I would rather not return to the house smelling like rotten fruit. Here’s my key.” He tossed a key their way before darting off, waving goodbye to the three. They thanked him and returned a wave in turn, wishing him luck with whatever awaits him. Parting ways as Kirby rushed over to the Dream Spring.
With the call of a warpstar, the travel was made quite short. Arriving at an old temple. He could never fly fully to the Dream Spring.
Really, the warpstar was hardly ever precise on where it landed unless he was really familiar with a spot. Only generally landing in the area he wanted to get to. He often has a mile or two to walk to wherever he wants to go. But the Dream Spring was different, the warpstar never gets even remotely close. Always landing just outside a path to it, at most. He figured that the place was too sacred to simply fly over to. Fortunately, the star took him to a short, safe passage that led to the fountain. That being the Dream Temple, a long path cutting through the rough mountains and dedicated to the fountain. It is said to have been made after the Dream Spring formed long ago. The Fountain of Dreams was close, he just had to pass through.
It was a gorgeous temple. The few windows it had were stained glass, depicting images of stars and planets. When the stained glass ended, painted images took their place. There were the old canvases, depicting various creatures and landscapes, always themed with the night sky or space. Animals of all sorts were winged or floating through the air in some form. Alongside the canvases of old was graffiti, painted on the walls, floors, and even ceiling. They were much more varied in subject, and were made by those who had done a pilgrimage here. Those who took the long journey on foot to here came in hopes of having a sip from the Dream Spring. In order for that to happen, you had to receive a blessing from the Fantasia Serpent. The fountain’s guardian. You can tell when she accepts you, as she’ll leave you be or play a short tune when you arrive. Otherwise, you’ll be driven out by a cacophony of notes.
He had visited long ago by complete happenstance. He had only wanted to play in the crystal caves the resort had, drawn in by their beauty. He had been warned not to go into the caves… so of course he ran right into them upon noticing the pretty sparkling stones inside. Unaware of the sacred environment he was stumbling through. Still, he somehow managed to make it to the end with only some small scuffs. Meeting the great serpent.
She was a beautiful creature. Her long form had little pattern aside from cloudy colors, but she didn’t need much with the way her scales sparkled like glitter. Her eyes always seemed fogged with dreams, the full spectrum of color. The back of her head and neck sprouted many large scales, which also served as her means to communicate. When she blew air through them, she could create tunes like an organ. For whatever reason, she took a liking to Kirby, gently touching him with her snout as she made a gentle little tune to him. He giggled from the touch, petting her back.
Perhaps one day he’ll make a pilgrimage himself. On foot, of course. It wouldn’t be much of a pilgrimage if he took a warpstar.
Emerging from the other side of the temple, he nearly screamed at what he saw. King Dedede was in the fountain, laying in it with a floaty like it was a common pool! The Star Rod was nowhere to be found! And where was the Fantasia Serpent? Did she get lost somewhere? Hardly does she leave the fountain unless absolutely necessary.
In an instant, Kirby realized what the king had done to the Star Rod, causing his chest to burn. He then took a deep breath, cooling the rage into a mild tension.
“So, up to your old tricks again, eh, King Dedede!?” Kirby shouted at him.
The king flinched, turning to him in surprise. “What you talkin’ ‘bout young pudge ball? I thought I’d do everyone a favor by-”
“No no no!” Kirby cried out. “I won’t listen to your tricks! What have you done to the Star Rod!?”
“Oh, that old thing?” The self-proclaimed king said nonchalantly. “I broke it inta seven pieces an’ gave each one ta my friends…”
Kirby shook his head in disbelief. What is he thinking!? He thought to himself, sprinting away before the king could finish his excuses.
King Dedede noticed, reaching out. “Wait, Kirby! I swear it’s important! Don’t…” But it was already too late. Kirby had already blocked out his words and ran away, disappearing from sight. No doubt to find all the pieces of the Star Rod.
Dedede let out a groan, dragging a hand down his face. He turned to his reflection. “Why ya gotta be such an idiot ‘bout these things? Ya coulda just said the important thing ta his face first an’ prevented this whole mess! Now you’re probably gonna get your head beat in by that pink gumball!” He paused. Staring past his reflection as another thought came to mind. “... Then again, the kid would probably hunt the pieces down anyway an’ try ta fight Nightmare himself.”
Shaking his head, he leaped from the fountain. Landing onto the crystal ground with a heavy thud. “Stupid kid… They’re gonna mess with the wrong guy an’ get themself killed. I’m the king ‘round here. I’m the one who should be praised for savin’ people!” He headed to the temple. Focused on something at his end in particular.
On his end of the temple, there was a large, rusting lever. The other side had none. He grabbed it, grunting and digging his heels. Slowly, the metal creaked. Shifting until it finally snapped to its lowest position. A gate slowly came down until the temple was split in two by iron bars.
He grinned to himself. There. Now that doofus can’t enter unless they dedicate. This time, I’m the one they’ll call hero ‘round here!
Returning to the fountain, he hopped back to his floaty. Stretching and relishing the soothing aura of the Dream Spring as he held his Star Rod piece close.
“Welp, might as well enjoy this while it lasts.” King Dedede said to himself. Awaiting Kirby’s arrival and guarding the fountain himself… in his unique way.

Kirby has a moment of quiet on his journey. He takes the time to reflect the circumstances.

Chapter Text
Kirby looked to the horizon. The sun was starting to set.
With a sigh, he started forming a circle among the clouds. Prepping the area for a campfire. It didn’t take long, despite Grape Garden being literal clouds. He was fast thanks to the lessons he learned from his many caretakers, specifically the ones that lived among the mountains in this situation. They often visited these clouds to hunt, gather food, and sometimes rested here during certain times of the year. Plus, he’s used to building a fire himself, especially since he’s had a house for around a year now. With the fire set, he pulled out his cooking tools: a multi-purpose cooking stand, a pot large enough to make food for a large family, and a box with all his utensils and cooking tools. Now to just gather from the area and see what he has to work with.
The place, despite being made up of literal clouds, was unusually solid. Thanks to this, Grape Gardens actually has life beyond birds that pass by. All around, growing inside bush-like parts of the clouds, were fruit speckled with stars. They have tough skins, but can be peeled with the proper strength like an orange or with the help of a knife. They can also be made into all sorts of things like stews and breads. As for Kirby’s plan? He took many, though leaving a few in each bush, and carried them back to camp. He managed to get his hands on lots of sugar some time back, and he had a plan to put that to use.
Kirby has been on the road for a week, and they’ve only gotten three shards of the Star Rod. This was taking much longer than they expected. They knew this journey would be longer than some of the previous incidents they’ve gone through, like what happened with Dyna Blade a number of months back. That only took a few days. But they expected a week, maybe a week and a half tops. Reflecting over it now, it might take two or even three weeks to finish all of this! He really underestimated how confusing and shifty Dreamland can be.
Most people live in the same area, so the slight shifts of the landscape that happen every day seem so small that they’re practically unnoticeable. Kirby, despite having a house, was closer to that of a nomad than a homebody. Among the things they’re known for - aside from their appetite and heroism - was their desire to explore. They loved to travel! Sometimes he would spend a few days camping elsewhere simply because he felt like it. And since he lives at the heart of Popstar in the flower fields, he has easy access to everywhere (with the help of a warpstar, anyway). When he does visit an area, even if it’s only been a few months, it can feel like a whole new world from all the changes a place can experience! The landscape practically functions like it's part of a dream, constantly shifting to the expectations and desires of the citizens that live upon it. No one knows why. It just is.
Normally, Kirby likes exploring. He likes the ever shifting landscape Popstar has. He likes to journey and witness and cook all on his own. It always felt freeing. He was a fully realized adult, embracing the role of hero he had stumbled into. People were no longer reluctantly treating him seriously simply because he managed to beat King Dedede. By all means, he should be at least content out here in the wilds.
Kirby cleaned up his freshly plucked fruit and put them in a large pot with sugar and water. After a little boiling, he took a wooden spoon and mashed them to bits. Crushing them until the texture hardly had any chunks. Then he used the spoon to mix everything together. The succulent, tart scent as the fruit cooked brought out a smile. It smelled like home.
And yet… he began to feel strange. A new feeling, one he had hardly felt before. It crept up on him in these quiet moments. Normally, he felt some pep left from spending time out talking to people, but… well… people haven’t been keen on talking and more into fighting ever since the Star Rod was shattered. Seems everyone else hasn’t been able to adjust to the Fountain of Dreams not flowing. How come he’s the only one being sensible through all of this? It only took him a couple days to get used to the lack of dream energy in the air! Why can’t they get used to it like he can?
… Well, that’s unfair to everyone else. If there’s one thing Kirby knows, it’s that he’s an oddball in many different ways. He’s astoundingly resilient in ways that often shocks many, holds astonishing strength hardly anyone can compare to, and has patience that leaves many baffled. He can master practically any skill he wants as long as he finds the right people or items to inhale and copy their skill essence. An odd person to meet, certainly, but he knows his family and friends love him and all his strangeness. It’s part of his charm!
As Kirby stirred the pot, they glanced at the surroundings. Hoping that maybe someone would pop up, give them a friendly hello, maybe ask for some food, something. They were more than happy to share a meal. More than happy to share a seat by the fire. More than happy to share stories. More than happy to spend a night sleeping under the stars with a stranger. Just so they don’t feel this aching emptiness inside that haunts them all day and all night.
And then it clicked. Is this loneliness? Kirby thought. If this was loneliness, then it was no wonder he would sometimes meet people rampaging because of this feeling. It feels so… horrible. It was like being hungry. Except nothing he eats can make it all better.
Tapping the spoon he used to stir, he scanned his surroundings again. Nobody nearby. Seems he’s dining alone again. He set the pot away from the fire, giving it time to cool. After a few minutes, he pulled a knife from the utensil box and smothered jam across some bread. Pressing two slices together and taking a large bite. The warm jam freshly taken off the fire was… good enough. That’s all. He didn’t feel all that good or bad as he ate. He simply ate.
It was a small comfort, focusing on their meal. Taking a bite and savoring the flavor, then taking another bite of their sandwich. It was familiar. It was filling. They hummed to themself after the last bite. Warm inside with the satisfaction of a finished meal.
The warmth faded so soon. So they grabbed the pot full of jam and chugged it down. Honing on the meal and ignoring all the rest. Extending the warmth all he could.
Kirby scraped the bottom of the pot with a spoon, lapping up the last inside before moving on to giving his dinnerware a wash. It was odd, chugging jam. It was a thick substance meant to be used in combination with something else, which would make it a bit awkward to consume on its own. But he had little issue with it. It isn’t the first time he’s eaten vast amounts of additives and toppings like they were a full course meal. That honor goes to cream cheese. With the large amount of jam made, it was enough to leave him full.
Yes. He was full. That's all that matters now. He’s had a nice supper of jam and a sandwich. Now he was full, making him content and ready for sleep. Anything else can wait until the morning. He set out his sleeping bag on the ground, then put out the fire. Settling into his temporary bed.
He focused on the weight wrapped around him, sinking deeper into it. Focused on the stars twinkling above. Finding comfort in what he had. He would be fine. He just needed to get some sleep. Then everything would be better.
Notes:
Hope you like Kirby angst! He may have had happy home lives, but he's not getting spared from pain if I can help it!
Chapter 3: The Lone Swordsman
Summary:
Arriving at Orange Ocean, he comes to confront the leader of the Meta-Knights.
Chapter Text
Kirby rushed, blasted, and crushed obstacles in his way. The difficulty was rising, now at Orange Ocean. The knights that got in his way were tough, but he made his way through either way. These warriors were part of a group called the Meta-Knights from what he’d heard. He’s not the most in the loop when it comes to gossip, but they get talked about enough wherever he goes for even a “living under a rock” kind of guy like him to know. Most importantly, he knows that their leader has a piece of the Star Rod and that meant Kirby had to face him. He was aptly named… Meta Knight. It’s a wonder how people don’t get confused over the two. Who thought it was a good idea to name both a person and a group two identical names?
Still, that mysterious Meta Knight… Kirby was pretty confident that he’s helping them out in gathering the pieces. Occasionally throwing an invincible candy their way every now and then. Yet he also keeps sending foes their way? They don’t have too much trouble with the knights, but it does make for a mess of mixed signals. Does he want to help or does he want them gone? It was impossible to tell.
Kirby arrived at a strange pale room, ancient yet advanced. He could see the stars from the windows. Pillars held the building tall, having seen times long forgotten. High up on a platform was a navy blue figure wrapped up in a dark blue cloak, armored with his face turned away. He saw the figure glance at him with a sharp, glowing, yellow eye. Staring at Kirby long and hard.
As he stared back, he felt this… odd sensation. A foreign familiarity that was completely alien to anything he’s felt from anyone before. As though he was a pitchfork resonating with a tone.
The yellow eye's brief glance lower brought Kirby from his daze. Looking down to notice a sword on his level, blade stabbed into the ground. He could sense what the figure was implying. He took it without hesitation, becoming donned with a green and yellow cap.
The figure turned around, cloak billowing behind, fully showing himself. No more running. The mask and the sword were unmistakable. This was Meta Knight. Kirby’s mysterious helper and opponent.
Let the battle begin.
Without saying a word, Meta Knight leaped down with astounding swiftness and swung his blade. But Kirby was swift as well, leaping away before the strike could hit. The two danced around each other, trading blows and clashing metal.
Kirby noticed a pattern amidst their fight. Let him strike first, then strike back. Let him try, then strike back. Leaps always end with a slash. He has a brief pause when he finishes. Kirby whittled at his health, scarcely getting hit himself until the final blow was done.
A blow right on the mask. Cracking it down the middle.
Kirby gasped, “Ah! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-” He couldn’t finish before the mask snapped in two. Shocked into stillness.
Staring back was the true face of the Lone Swordsman. Still shaking off the blow that rendered him bare. His navy blue body and sharp armor was contrasted by a gentle face and bright, golden eyes. It was almost like looking into a dark mirror. But while Meta Knight was as shocked as Kirby, he also seemed… mortified.
Kirby instinctively raised a paw in concern, “Are you-” Before he could finish, Meta Knight glared back. Wrapping up in his cloak and disappearing. Kirby stared up at the ceiling he vanished into.
I hope he’s okay. Kirby thought to himself.
He then shook his head, refocusing on the Star Rod piece left behind. Smiling at the accomplishment, he grabbed the earned fragment and did his usual cheerful dance. Another piece down! Just one more. He called upon a warpstar and flew away, heading for Rainbow Resort. His journey was almost done!
Just a short distance from where Kirby had left, Meta Knight watched. He is far stronger than I predicted. It seems he might be more than enough to take on Nightmare. Assured by the thought, he spread his wings. Flying away to be in the proper position for the final confrontation.
Chapter 4: Facing the Faulty King
Summary:
Finally, after a long journey, Kirby has nearly all the pieces of the Star Rod united. He just needs one more.
He must face King Dedede once more.

Chapter Text
Rainbow Resort was as beautiful as he recalled them all those years ago. The crystals gleamed and twinkled in ways that brought a familiar warmth. Smiling to himself as he passed. Sometimes there would be sections outside the crystal caverns, and he got to see the perpetual light show the Fountain of Dreams granted this place. He arrived at a good time too, that being night time. Normally, the Astraeus Morpheus swirls like a stream, but they’re still right now since the Dream Spring isn’t flowing. Either way, it was nice to see the pretty sights the caverns had. Even if he couldn’t enjoy them fully right now with his mission. Using his laser ability in order to accomplish the puzzles inside some of the caves was interesting with the way the beams bounced off the crystalline walls. It was quite a fun experience, really! He just wished he had someone with him to talk about it...
Never mind the thought! He finished the last of the challenges. Arriving at smooth, stone grounds. Returning to where it all began.
The Fountain of Dreams.
King Dedede stood with his hammer in both hands. Looking down at Kirby with stern eyes.
Kirby looked him in the eyes, unfazed. He could sense the nearly complete Star Rod vibrating, resonating with the last fragment. Seeking to be whole.
“You sure you want to do this?” King Dedede asked firmly. It sounded angry, but Kirby could only sense frustration. And even that was mild compared to the fear that dwelled in the king.
“Yes. King Dedede, please, give me the last fragment. Without the Star Rod, without the flow of the Fountain of Dreams, people can’t rest properly. It’s hurting everyone.”
The king sighed, shaking his head, but said nothing.
“What? Is there something I’m missing?” Kirby asked, worry seeping up.
“Nothin’ a kid like you would understand.” King Dedede said, rearing his hammer.
“I would if you’d talk to me for once!”
The king glanced to the side. Remaining silent.
“Dedede!”
…
Kirby let out a sigh, hopping back and lowering to a battle stance. “Fine. You want another fight? Here it is.”
King Dedede charged, swinging down his hammer. Kirby hopped, leaping over him with ease. Landing on his feet behind him. Rearing long, King Dedede charged again and slammed his hammer thrice, leaving behind an energy star. Kirby leaped once more, this time only jumping back. They inhaled an energy star, spitting it back at him.
He only flinched, growling as he turned to Kirby. Taking a deep gulp of air before hopping… and inflated in a way they had never seen him do before!
“Woah!” Kirby shouted, dodging a swoop. “You can float!? I thought I was the only one!” They said with growing excitement. Possibilities springing forth to mind.
Their thoughts were cut short by another swoop by King Dedede.
Right, in the middle of a fight. Beat him now, praise later! Kirby scolded themself. Watching and evading until the king finally puffed out air, landing with a heavy thud. The fight continued on as before, not a single word traded.
A nagging sense got to Kirby. A sense that everything was too quiet. Perhaps it was the lack of cheering compared to last time, replaced by the silence of the sacred fountain. Perhaps it was the lack of quips from the typically taunting tyrant. Or perhaps it was just him.
There was no time to think about it though. He had a wand to fix.
“GYAH!” King Dedede was knocked aside at last, Star Rod fragment flying out of his robes. Freed and floating in the air, ready to reunite. Kirby smiled, pulling out the nearly complete Star Rod. The fragment floated over to the wand. Slotting into the gap of the star.
Once it was in place, it gleamed. The cracks mending and fading. Uniting until any sign that it had been shattered vanished. Shining brightly once again. Joy overflowed Kirby’s heart, enough to bring a dance out of him.
Once calmed, Kirby turned towards the Fountain of Dreams. Grinning wide as he marched his way, swinging his arms. Ease finally washing over him. Not just because of the Star Rod’s comforting aura, but from the thought that this adventure was finally over. Everyone will calm down and he’ll be able to talk with his friends again!
King Dedede sat up, rubbing his head. As soon as he spotted the puffball approaching the fountain with the remended Star Rod, his heart leapt to his throat. All he could think to do was jump over to Kirby and grab him.
Even this would not stop the pink puff. Dragging him along the ground as they walked. They did halt upon noticing a set of mitts grab them by the torso, looking back at him.
He had nothing to say. Words were futile with the pink menace. Not when they dedicate themself to something. All he could do was shake his head, his pleas showing in his expression.
Kirby only squinted at him, and turned back around. He grabbed them again, dragged along the ground. What for, he didn’t know. Perhaps to get a message across in the only way he could think of. A desperate bid to get them to stop, useless as it was.
Kirby halted, standing just below the fountain. Turning around to glare at King Dedede. Even when angry, they hardly were intimidating. And yet, the sight stung the king’s heart.
Kirby smacked him upside the head, knocking him over to the other side of the area. With plenty of space between each other, they let out a sigh. Both of disappointment and relief.
Turning to the fountain, they focused on the Star Rod’s proper place. Easily hopping up the rim, then to the top. It was then that King Dedede got up once more. Gaping as Kirby slotted the rod into place like a puzzle piece.
He hopped down from the fountain and turned to it. Smiling up as he awaited the waters to flow. Ready to feel the comforting sensation of the Fountain of Dreams.
But the dream energy never came. Instead, they received a tidal wave of darkness. Pummeled by dread and fear from a foreign source as something emerged from the fountain.
A spherical form burst out, decrowning the fountain of the Star Rod. The orb was dark as the night with star patterns. It spun rapidly, radiating darkness. The onslaught of terror produced by the star sphere was enough to send Kirby and King Dedede into a frenzy, running in circles helplessly. Frantic over the Star Rod being shoved so easily out of its place again.
Movement caught the king’s eye. The dark orb swiftly fled the scene, taking off to do who knows what. He did know one thing, though: he had to go down.
The king, halting his panic, spotted the Star Rod. Still whole, still shining strong. The aura was powerful. He could feel it.
Swift on his feet, he inhaled both Kirby and the wand. Turning to the sky and blasting them towards the sphere with dark stars. They screamed as they flew.
That is, until a comforting aura caught their attention. The Star Rod receiving their full focus, they plucked it from the sky. Resonating with the energy within it. They straightened themself out in no time. Wielding the wand of dreams high and at the ready.
Kirby glared at the orb, steeling against the darkness. So this is the cause of all the ruckus. I’ll take this down quick.
And so began the clash of stars.

You're getting TWO chapters this time! (Because there isn't much to really dive deep into yet but not all chapters can be uber long I suppose.) Both the previous chapter and this one were neat to write! Even if Meta Knight didn't get much except being mysterious. King Dedede was fun to write this chapter! A bond is building... slowly.
There will be some post game cannon fluff too, and I can't wait for it to be ready!
Chapter 5: Clash of Stars
Notes:
The true source of the Dream Spring's problems has unveiled itself. Kirby is ready to battle for Popstar's safety.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
The shadow orb charged straight at them. Kirby was swift to counter. The wand repelling the dark with its light.
The two distanced from each other. Both flaring with energy.
Stars as black as night were thrown Kirby’s way. He dodged with short dives and careful slowing. Controlling his descent to avoid being hit and still keep up with the shadow orb. Swift to throw stars of golden light back. All the while, the two spherical beings slowly descended. Drscending into the clouds.
As they fought, Kirby began to feel an off kilter connection. Carefully watching the sphere move and act. Gaining a nagging feeling that what he was fighting had noticeable intelligence. That this darkness, though overwhelming, was organized. Functioning in tandem with a focus. The attacks weren’t randomly tossed out. There was a pattern to them.
The orb would try to ram into them. Throw slash beams of condensed shadow. Barrage him with attacks, spaces placed as though to throw him off balance. It worked a little, too. It was certainly clear he was a target with how much the sphere kept throwing things trained specifically on him.
Kirby slowly came to a realization: this sphere of darkness was very much alive.
He could not process this thought. It got him pelted by a dark slash. He was swift to shake the hit and throw a glowing star back. The final hit to send the orb of darkened dreams flying. Heading straight for the moon.
No, that’s not right… the sphere’s path was curved. Perhaps this object, entity, or whatever it was, was flying itself to the moon. Either way, he felt the urge to follow.
Fortunately, the ever familiar warpstar flew to him. Heeding his silent call. He latched to it, trailing just behind the shining orb. All the while, a thought rang through his mind.
What is that?
Riding upon a warpstar, Kirby made a careful descent near a zooming field. The moon was just a short distance away. Far to their side, they spotted the star patterned sphere. Giving it a hard stare. Witnessing it shift into a dark figure.
Black stars charged Kirby’s way. They zigzagged, evading with expertise. But stars continued to rain upon them. Eventually, black clashed with yellow. The warpstar burst from the hit, causing Kirby to skid face first. He hopped up, glancing at the ground. It still seemed to zoom by under him, making his head start to spin.
He focused up, wielding the Star Rod at the ready. Staring firmly at the unveiled person behind the dreamless mayhem.
Warping forth to hover before Kirby was an ominous man. His cape was a borderline black shade of purple with pale violet stars on the outside, the same star pattern as when he was spherical, and was firmly wrapped around himself. His face was humanoid yet colored purple, along with having a massive cleft chin and large, golden horns that curved towards each other. He wore dark blue pauldrons, a beaded necklace with a crimson jewel, along with a helmet of the same color. Upon that helmet was an emblem replicating the image of fire with gold and three red, round gems. His eyes were hidden by shades, sharp and dark as the depths of space.
Kirby called out, “Who are you?”
The man bore a nasty, sharp, fanged grin. Speaking with a whispery, yet powerful voice. “Heed my name, for it shall be the last you ever hear.
I am Nightmare. A name that soon shall be dreaded by all. As for you, I have no need for rebels. Be honored, hero of the stars; you shall be the perfect first example!” He opened his cape up wide, revealing clawed hands and raining stars upon the hero.
Kirby huffed, raising their open paw and guarding against the attack. They hardly felt anything more than a prick and a faint chill. Returning to silence as they swung more stars back at Nightmare.
But the golden stars bounced off his cape. They hummed at this, watching him fly about. Waiting for whatever came next. As he pulled out his hands to send out stars again, they noticed what laid under the cape. The inside had a whole universe on display, but his exposed body looked to be nothing more than a swirling tornado. They swung the rod of dreams, sending their own golden stars towards him while he was mid-attack.
Just a single star struck. It was all that was needed to cause him to recoil, forcing him to warp away. After a pause, he reappeared, sealed up in his cape once more. Kirby focused upon the dark entity. Holding tightly to the Star Rod.
Blows were traded. Darkness bruising pink skin. Light bludgeoning black winds. A steady finger easily tossed stars like droplets. A sure paw swung potent stars back. Both moving as fast as the battlefield below them. Testing with every attack. Waiting to see who would falter. Watching for the final misstep. Both bearing unwavering resolve, even as their bodies wore down. Energy slowly chipping off their shoulders like cliffs washed down by the tides.
Inevitably, the duel would stop. Put on pause when someone breached the silence.
“Halt!” Nightmare called out, cape bundled tightly. Kirby froze in place, blinking with a blank gaze. “Let us make a deal.”
After a moment, they lowered the star tipped rod. Brows furrowing as their body tensed. Still clinging to the wand of dreams.
Nightmare spoke softly, “I know you tire, hero of the stars. Down to your core, you long for this conflict to end.”
The puffball’s stern expression slowly fell. Their shoulders grew heavy. Memories of the long days weighed on them. The constant fighting. The stifling silence.
The wizard grinned, opening himself fully to show the swirling specks of light that shined upon his cape. “I am more than happy to do so… for a small price.”
Kirby’s shoulders raised once more, “And what might that be?”
“Let me have a piece of Popstar. I won’t do much. Just make some… slight renovations.” He said, cloyingly gentle like a pitcher plant to a fly.
“You promise it won’t harm anyone?”
A moment of hesitation. His hands slowly pulled inward. The smile dipping just a touch. A spike of dread amidst the sea of darkness within him.
Kirby narrowed their eyes, raising the Star Rod high. “Figures. A little too late for this stunt. Now make like a tree and LEAVE!” With a final swing, a golden star flew. Crashing into the violent winds.
He let out a final wail. Light poured from his eyes and mouth as his body crackled. Slowly vanishing into specks of light, as though turning to dust.
At last… Silence…
And then explosions sounded off. The battlefield became drowned with noise. Each burst making the surroundings tremble.
Time to go! After only a moment, a warpstar rushed in. Kirby hopped on in an instant and took to the skies with a high pitched twinkle.
As they made their way to Popstar, an explosion unlike any other went off behind them. Not even their crash ability compared. When they finally willed themself to turn around, they saw a large chunk of the moon was missing. As though something bit into it. Permanently carving the moon into a crescent.
“Oops… Hopefully Mr. Shine's alright.” Kirby said to themself. Though Mr. Shine was more of an entity that guided and lived on the moon for the most part, he could possess it if he so wished. And from what they’ve heard from stories, could even wield the power within it. Would he feel pain from the explosion? Or feel what remains like an open wound?
… They really hoped not.
Kirby shook his head, setting his mind to the Fountain of Dreams. Warpstar gliding through the vacuum of space at high speed. Even when entering the atmosphere, neither the warpstar nor the pink heroine burned, and they never altered speed. Fast approaching the Dream Spring. It was time for the wand to return home.
Notes:
This is the wrong writing, the wrong writing song~!
I’m very very sorry that I got it wrong~!A more silly apology for messing up how the battle against Nightmare went. On a positive note, taking time to rewrite it gave me the opporunity to give Nightmare some depth!
It's like, one inch. But it's something!
Chapter 6: Ease Returns (But More is to Come)
Notes:
The long adventure has finished at last. Kirby and King Dedede come to reconcile what happened, even if only for today, and begin to head back ro their homes for rest.
(But not all are keen to forget.)
Chapter Text
The flight towards the ground was peaceful. The silence of space was welcomingly serene after the hectic battle. There was hardly a sound within the vast emptiness. Kirby breathed out the tension. Letting the memories from the whole event fade away. It really wasn’t all that bad, now that everything was behind him.
As Kirby breached the clouds, nearing the Dream Spring’s sacred grounds, he noticed King Dedede floating up beside him. Just like he did during their battle. He smiled at the king, waving at him with the wand still in hand.
To think he was really trying to help. Guess I should have slowed down and listened to what he had to say. Kirby thought.
“Need a ride down!?” They shouted to him. The king only shook his head, lowering down on his own.
Kirby set their focus to the fountain. Seeing it nearing, they willed the warpstar to begin slowing. Hopping onto the arm they were riding on to stand. They raised their arm back, took aim, and tossed the Star Rod.
It landed perfectly. Slotting into its proper place. This time, to stay. Spouts of dream infused waters rising to the skies once more.
Kirby landed on the crystalline grounds surrounding the Dream Spring. Bouncing off the warpstar with a spin when it struck the ground, the star vanishing in an instant. King Dedede huffed out, landing with a light thud.
The king crossed his arms. Watching the pink puffball with a wary expression. Almost a scowl, but not quite.
The puffball smiled at him, “Thanks for the help!”
King Dedede blinked, face shifted in confusion. “Thanks for… what?”
“Thanks for the help.” Kirby said, walking up to him. “If it weren’t for you sending me flying up there, that Nightmare guy could've caused some serious harm to people.”
“But… I broke the Star Rod. I messed up the fountain; I’m the reason ya went on that wild goose chase!”
“Perhaps, but I like to think of it all as a warm up for that battle. I certainly felt ready when you sent me up there! The whole adventure wasn’t all that bad, anyway.”
He shook his head with a groan, “Kirby… You are such a weirdo. You know that, right?”
They beamed, “Thanks! I’m pretty happy with my weird little self!”
The king could only stare in bafflement (and perhaps a bit of awe) as the pink puffball turned to the Fountain of Dreams. He joined them, unable to think of anything to say.
The air was faintly fogged with mist, colored a rainbow hue. The lights above trickling like rivers once more. All a result of the dream infused waters, which now rose into the air to speckle the land as it had for countless ages.
“How beautiful…” Kirby said aloud to no one. Drinking up the sight and relishing the wave of positive dream energy pouring out alongside the sparkling waters. Awashed in the lightness their body gained. It almost felt like it would put them to sleep right now.
“Yeah… It is…” Said King Dedede quietly.
They snapped from their basking and turned to the king. He was turned away, head lowered. They didn’t hesitate to approach.
“What’s the matter, Dedede?” They asked gently.
“... You’re pretty stupid, aren’ you?” He said with a bitter chuckle. They could feel the sorrow and hatred rolling off his shoulders. “I broke the Star Rod… an’ it wasn’ even worth it. I could'a just handed it ta you an’ all this would’a been solved lickety split. All I did was cause problems…”
“You didn’t only cause problems. You helped me reach Nightmare.” Kirby said.
“Oh, like the warpstar couldn’ just come an’ pick you up?”
“Not always. That takes a moment in a normal place. But here? I haven’t ridden in or out of the Fountain of Dreams until today. It only took me as far as the temple entrance or the crystal caverns. You really helped out there!”
The wave of shadowy pain emanating from King Dedede slowed down, turning to look at Kirby. “You… really mean that?” He said, speaking softly.
They smiled back, nodding assuredly. “Absolutely! Sure, you messed up a bit, but you helped out in the end! You put in the work to help! That’s important. I see that effort, and I’m glad about it!”
“But… This could’a been-”
“All's well that ends well! It’s over now, so why worry? That freaky guy is gone and the spring is fine, so we can head home and have a nice long sleep. We earned it!” They said, lightly bumping him on the arm.
The king felt the corners of his lips rise, returning to his puffed up self. “Yeah… Yeah! I helped out, an’ I made things better! Not all of it was good, but… I did somethin’ right in the end!” He didn’t fully believe the words coming out of his mouth. But it made the pink puff smile and cheer with enthusiasm, bringing a warmth to his chest. A warmth that he hadn't felt for a long time.
He didn’t want to let it go. He wouldn’t let it go.
Suddenly, the waters below the fountain rippled. Arising from the depths, a serpent with glittering, pale, rainbow colored scales emerged. Circling the fountain and flicking her tongue towards it.
Kirby ran up to her, waving his arms and shouting. “Hey there, Fantasia Serpent! Nice to see you again! I was worried you were hurt out there! Glad to see you’re okay!” The giant sea snake turned to him. Though her eyes were clouded with color, her split tongue and the pits that lined her snout sensed him no problem. She lowered to the puffball, pressing her snout against him. Her mane of scales lifting and blowing a gentle song. He gave her a hug back.
The serpent lifted her head, flicking her tongue around the area once more. Her gaze soon landing on King Dedede. He let out a nervous chuckle, waving at her as her scale mane bristled.
She took a large gulp of air, revealing the many backwards facing teeth that lined her jaws and the central venomous fang at the top of her mouth. Keeping her maw open, her scales stood on end in threat. Dedede shrunk under her towering stature.
She boomed out a cacophony of notes. Like an organ that had all their keys slammed while air was blasted right into the pipes. Kirby and King Dedede slammed their hands to their heads, flinching at the loud sound.
“Okay I’m goin’ I’m goin’!” The king shouted as he bolted for the temple.
Kirby shook off the moment, “Uh… Yeah, I don't think he’ll pull a stunt like that anytime soon. Hahah…” The serpent lowered down, letting out a quiet tune in apology and licking him with her tongue. He chuckled at this, stroking her head in return.
Kirby reunited with King Dedede at the temple. The gate was lifted, allowing all access once more.
Kirby looked up at King Dedede, who also looked back. The puffball gave him a grin. The king gave a hesitant, wary grin back.
All’s well that ends well.
One did not have this in mind, however. Meta Knight, having watched until Nightmare was annihilated for sure, had already made his return trip. Flying back to his flying battleship, the Halberd.
He entered the planning room. All his top command, his captain, and his right hand sailor were there already. Sitting around a map of Popstar with tiny figures meticulously set up. At the back of the room, sitting under a light, was a pinboard. A web of plans and lists pinned up to it.
“What’s the state of things?” Sword Knight asked. Her voice firm.
“It has been done. Kirby has defeated Nightmare. The only colateral was a piece of the moon being destroyed. No innocents were harmed.” Meta Knight said.
Axe Knight let out a sigh, “Good. That’s a lot better than predicted.”
“And what of King Dedede?” Captain Vul asked warily.
“He was a bit of trouble for Kirby at first when he held the piece. But once Nightmare was released, he launched Kirby towards the final encounter.”
Blade Knight reared his head in shock, but then held a hand to his chin. Then, he gave a nod. “Good. At least he did something right in the end!” He said chipperly.
“He was also a complete fool until then.” Meta Knight said with a cold voice. He approached the board, overlooking the plans pinned to it. Some were stained, but most were clean and white. “He is too much of a risk to everyone. He was bad enough as a lazy buffoon who wallowed in his gluttony and engaged in pathetic squash matches, but this is crossing the line. I cannot stand idly by and watch as people stand apathetic to that imbecile’s tyranny. Especially with what lies beyond.”
“So…” Trident Knight asked hesitantly. “What is your word on Operation Towerfall?”
Meta Knight carefully looked at the lists, turning to Javelin Knight. “Are these the final calculations?”
Javelin Knight spoke with a mechanically altered voice, sounding neutral. “Yes. The amount should be enough to accomplish the mission, though we might still run thin around the end. Made sure to triple check my work as well.”
Meta Knight nodded, “Good work. Same with the rest of you; these plans are coming along well. Just a few months and we will have enough supplies to tackle everything smoothly. It shouldn’t take us more than a year for Operation Towerfall to be ready.
If all are in, say aye.” He raised a fist to the air.
“Aye!” The majority of the group cheered, copying Meta Knight down to the hand used. The sailor dressed waddle dee hopping from her seat with vigor as she raised her paw.
Trident Knight briefly glanced around the room. “Aye.” He joined with a fist of his own.
