Work Text:
Today was the day. Today he'd be seeing Mary once again after spending a few weeks not being able to. The poor man was already there at the agreed place, already ready with gifts for his beloved Mary.
Arthur was way too excited to say the least. He was practically kicking his feet and giggling at the thought of Mary. If someone took a look at him now they could see he was acting like a schoolgirl going to see her crush.
Time passed, about 3 hours after the designated time they were supposed to meet. Arthur refused to believe that she may have forgot and kept thinking of other reasons why she may be late.
"Maybe she's getting me a gift"
Fuck, I hope she's not getting robbed or something”
“What if she got robbed and I wasn't there?”
With his mind buzzing he didn't know what to do. What if he left to patrol the area for her but she was actually fine and came to the spot then was disappointed he wasn't there? After staying another hour with no sign of Mary he finally accepted she was not coming.

‘My dear Arthur,
I am truly sorry I was not able to make it to our date. Daddy decided it'd be a good idea to get so drunk that he nearly died from the amount of alcohol he consumed. I swear to you that next time I will be there on time.
Yours,
Mary Gillis’
Ah. Of course. Always her father. Arthur couldn't say he was surprised because he certainly wasn't. He wouldn't be surprised if her father got that drunk just to keep her home and from seeing him.
‘Oh Mary, It is always that damn father of yours. We have not been able to see eachother for weeks and yet he always has to do something.’
Arthur sat there with his journal on his lap as he reread the letter over and over again, almost trying to memorize it before gently setting it aside. "Why am I not surprised?" He murmured to himself after sitting in silence for so long after he received the letter. He grabbed his journal from his lap and jotted down every single thought in his mind. All of which were about Mary.
