The Light Burnt Out (I'm Working on the Last Chapter, but it's Taking Forever to Feel Right)

Summary:

Moonie goes through the worst time in her life and it culminates in one big mistake that she grows from.

Notes:

Read the additional tags because there are some intense trigger warnings in there!

This AU was also created before the show, but I will characterize the characters pretty much the same

Also Moonie and Sunny will be referred to as such in the narration.

Chapter 1: Stay Awake

Chapter Text

Moonie sat behind the security desk. She was going through the daycare logs, making sure the paperwork was in order and all. It was a boring task, but a welcome lull to the busy day.

She still worked as a daycare attendant oddly enough. It was mostly for the reason that she didn't trust Sunny to run the place alone. God knows what would happen if Sunny tried. It's not like Moonie wanted to. Most kids were sweet yes, but also annoying. Some kids were just sweet, but those weren't the ones you could put most of your time and energy into. You had to deal with the problem children first or they'd create bigger problems.

Sunny was in the middle of her cleaning routine. It took forever. Moonie could probably get some more progress on some of her projects if she wanted to. She didn't want to though. She didn't have the motivation.

"How are you doing?" Sunny called out as she came back over to the desk. Her disinfectant bottle had run out, so she made one of her many trips to refill it. Moonie tensed up as Sunny practically yelled. Sunny didn't exactly have this thing called volume control, so she could be very loud at times. Moonie was not in the mood to deal with her sister's noise today. That is why she had her headphones in.

"Tired," Moonie responded blandly. Sunny pouted slightly when she heard that. She didn't like when Moonie gave her short answers, especially when it was just 'tired'. Moonie always said she was tired and that annoyed Sunny. The thing is, Moonie was always tired.

"You always say that," Sunny whined to complain. Moonie sighed and closed the computer she was working on. She managed to finish her work somehow. She was all out of energy and wanted to go home, but she couldn't go home yet. She had to wait for Sunny to complete her cleaning routine to go back to the apartment. She really wished she didn't.

"I am always tired though," Moonie retorted lazily. She crossed her arms and laid them on the desk for a makeshift pillow. She ignored Sunny's tutting and rested her head in her arms. She was ready to take a nap.

Moonie drifted in and out of sleep for the next two or so hours. She couldn't quite stay asleep, noises from around the daycare always keeping her just awake. It didn't help that Sunny was also poking her whenever she walked by to grab something. Moonie tried not to show she was annoyed at this behavior, but she was. However, Sunny just thought she was helping.

"Moonie! It's only eight o'clock. Why are you asleep?" Sunny asked incredulously, hands on her hips. Moonie groaned and pulled her hat further down her head. She loved that hat to pieces, but it couldn't protect her from her own sister.

"I'm tired," she whined sleepily. Sunny lightly smacked her on the top of her head, causing Moonie to reluctantly sit all the way up. She wasn't happy about this at all. Sunny didn't notice, instead she went back to refilling her cleaning supplies. Sometimes it hurt Moonie that her own sister never noticed that she was upset or uncomfortable, but she knew Sunny couldn't exactly tell all the time. So, she let it slide.

"You stay up all night that's why," Sunny responded. She thought this was all good natured fun, but Moonie felt an overwhelming feeling of unease when her less than ideal sleeping schedule was mentioned. Moonie felt self conscious about everything she did. That included.

"I'm a night owl, you know this."

"Well maybe you wouldn't be so tired if you slept at night."

"Oh shut up," Moonie replied in a teasing tone. Despite her feeling the exact opposite of a teasing mood, she did it nonetheless. She knew Sunny would appreciate the playful banter, and that was enough for Moonie. Sunny appeared to have the desired effect, giggling to the point of needing to pause her cleaning.

"I can't wait to go home!" Sunny exclaimed as she put away the last of her bottles of bleach. Moonie felt like she was sleep walking. She didn't even respond to Sunny's exclamation. She just wanted to go and sleep in her hammock in her room.

"I bet you feel the same Moonie," Sunny remarked with a joking elbow to Moonie's ribs. Moonie only nodded. The jab to side hurt more than it would if she was less tired. It was like her senses were less on high alert right now, as if they weren't on heightened alert already. She just followed behind Sunny, fumbling with the portal.

She was glad to be finally going home.
