Work Text:

“Boosfer, where are YOU?!” Kier cut himself off with a scream, as Boosfer jumped at him from behind a pillar. The speedrunner laughed at him, swinging his axe at Kier’s shield and getting ready to crit him.  Kier booked it, immediately turning around and running away from the fight. He was destined to lose.

“BUBBO! HELP ME,” he screamed into his microphone. Leaning forward in his chair and lifting himself a bit.

The person addressed simply let out a breathy giggle.  Kier continued running, only stopping when he heard someone take damage behind him. Boosfer let out a high-pitched scream, as Bubbo attacked him. Kier didn’t waste a second, and jumped right back into action to help out Bubbo.

His axe swung through the air, not really hitting anyone or anything. Instead he got hit again by Boosfer. A quick look at his hotbar made him retreat. Realizing too late, he should’ve eaten something before going back to fighting. A last hit, inflicted by Boosfer again, reset him to spawn.

Losing all his armor and weapons, he just sat in his chair, leaning back and staring at his screen in disappointment. Boosfer’s laughs were audible in the background, though they quickly turned into screams again. Getting killed by the ender dragon, he immediately started complaining about how “dumb” this “stupid game” is.

Kier was not really listening anymore, zoning out and rethinking his choices. “Why didn’t I eat during the last fight,” he thought. He scolded himself for how dumb it was..

A noise behind him snapped him back to reality. He turned around to see a very warmly dressed Dev trotting in. Dragging a blanket, he came up to Kier and set himself on the floor in front of his chair. Leaning his head on Kier’s leg.

“I thought you wanted to go to sleep.”, Kier said silently, placing a hand in Dev’s messed up hair. Dev groaned at his touch, making Kier smile like an idiot.

“You’re very loud” Dev mumbled back, having a slightly sulky tone to his voice. Kier bit his lip. He has been screaming a lot, to be fair.

“You are pretty loud!” a voice came through his headphones.

“Shut up Boosfer, you shouldn’t be talking” Kier returned, then muting in discord and taking off his headset. Focusing solely on Dev, who was still cowering on the floor.

“You’re such a baby”, Kier muttered, getting the, now offended, Dev to stand up with him. “You should get some sleep,” he continued.

“Well, I tried , but someone couldn’t be just a little more quiet”, Dev remarked, rolling his eyes. Kier didn’t reply but frowned a bit in sorrow.

They made their way to the kitchen, to get something to drink. Kier took the lead and got two glasses for them, as Dev settled on one of the chairs at their dinner table.

“Are you feeling okay so far? Your head was pretty hot.”, Kier noticed, as he was filling them with water.

“It should be fine,” Dev shrugged. “Nothing a small Ibuprofen couldn’t handle.”

Kier handed him his glass, sitting down on the opposite side. Dev grabbed it with both hands, letting them rest on the cold surface for a second, before taking a sip. Lowering it again, he let out a heavy breath that made Kier raise his eyebrows in concern.

“Are you s--”

“Yes Kier. I’m sure.” Dev interrupted, “I promise,” he added, giving Kier a reassuring glance, tilting his head to the side.

Dev had slight dark circles under his eyes. Matched with his messy hair and pale skin, he really looked like a sick person. Kier felt even more sorry now, for being so loud earlier. He looked down, fumbling with his glass, letting a silence grow between them.

A quiet thud made him look up again. Dev had let his head fall on the table. One hand underneath the table, the other playing with his empty glass, making light wood noises, where he moved it.

Quietly watching, Kier felt his eyes become heavier, sleepiness finally setting in.

Some time passed, before he decided that they should move to their beds.

“Can you carry me?” Dev asked quietly, as if it was just a thought he had, that wasn’t meant to be verbalized. He was still laying on the table, making it hard for Kier to make out if he was saying it genuinely or just as a small gag.

“Can’t even walk by yourself anymore? What? Did the fever weaken your bones that much?”  Kier answered sarcastically, hoping Dev also meant it in the joking manner.

He didn’t respond, however. His only reaction was visible by his back raising more than usual for a second. Seeming to let out a silent sigh.

So he wasn’t joking? Damn. Kier felt even worse now.

“Are you ready to go?”, he tried changing the topic.

Dev stayed silent again.

Kier stood up impatiently and went around the table stopping beside Dev, finally making him lift his head in question. A short amount of time passed, before Kier made a motion with his hand, signalling the other to stand up. Dev hesitated, but complied. The second he was standing he already lost his foothold again, being lifted in the air. He gasped at the sudden move. Now sitting in Kiers arms bridal style.

He looked at Kier confused, but didn’t protest, instead wrapping his arms around Kier’s neck to make it easier for him to carry.

Dev’s cold arms sent a shiver down Kier’s spine, making him let out a shaky breath.

He made sure Dev wasn’t going to fall, then slowly moved them to Dev’s room.

Arriving at the right door, he opened it using his elbow and pushed it open backwards. He walked towards Dev’s bed and carefully put him down on it.

Dev immediately laid down, leaving space for Kier to join. Kier, though, didn’t seem to plan on doing that. “Are you 5? Why are you so needy right now?”, he declared. “I also don’t want to get sick, thank you very much.”

Dev sighed, but didn’t complain any further. “Wasn’t his decision anyway,” he thought. He got into a more comfortable position, turning away from Kier.

Just as silence started spreading, the bed creaked, underneath more weight being added. Dev smiled to himself and turned back around. “You’re so annoying when you’re sick”, Kier repeated, acting annoyed first but then returning a small smile with droopy eyes.

Dev was fast to fall asleep, Kier following soon after.
