Work Text:

Kunikida never hoped he was mistaken before in his life. He had been doing research for his criminology assignment and found out the name of the Port Mafia boss was Nakajima Atsushi. Which also happened to be the name of the man Dazai had been dating for the last few months. It probably was a coincidence, but Kunikida had to tell Dazai. He knew Dazai was in love with his boyfriend, but if something ever happened to Dazai because he was unaware of the danger he was in, Kunikida would never be able to forgive himself.

Kunikida has noticed how much better Dazai had been doing great mentally since he started dating Nakajima. He couldn’t help but worry about how Dazai could take the news if he's right about Nakajima's occupation. But Dazai did have a right to know if he was involved with someone dangerous.

“Dazai, I need to speak to you.” Kunikida said as he approached his friend. “You’re dating, Nakajima Atsushi, right?”

Dazai’s eyes brightened at the mention of his boyfriend. “I am. He's the light of my life.” He hadn't thought it was possible to love someone so much.

“The same guy who convinced you to finally see a therapist?” The Port Mafia wouldn't believe in therapy, right?

“The very one.” It actually surprised Dazai at how much talking to a therapist helped him.

“Rescues kittens?” A mafia boss wouldn't rescue kittens, right?

“Atsushi does love cats.” They always found Atsushi, and he could never abandon them when they needed help. Random cats would even scratch on Atsushi's door to be let in. It never failed to amuse Dazai.

Kunikida felt relieved because there was no way Dazai's boyfriend could be involved with the Port Mafia. “So, I understand it’s probably not the same guy, but I just wanted to inform you in case there's even a small chance that he could be the boss of the Port Mafia.”

“But he is.” Dazai said without any hesitation.

Kunikida’s eyes widened in shock. “What?” He had to of heard Dazai wrong because there was no possible way Dazai's Atsushi was the Port Mafia boss. From how Dazai described him, he sounded like the perfect boyfriend.

Dazai sighed dreamily. “Atsushi was very up front from the start about who he was.” Dazai had felt an instant connection with Atsushi when they met a few months ago. Atsushi had fully expected Dazai to run from him, but the brunet hadn't felt afraid. The look of awe on Atsushi's face when Dazai told him, he didn't care that he was involved with the Port Mafia and just wanted to get to know Atsushi as a person.

“Oh, look, there he is.” Dazai beamed as he waved Atsushi over.

It was clear to Kunikida that Dazai was smitten with the mafia boss. He just hoped that Dazai didn't end up getting hurt, both emotionally and physically.

Atsushi kissed Dazai's cheek. “Osamu, have you had lunch yet?”

Dazai shook his head. “Not yet, I had a feeling you’d show up.”

Atsushi smiled, turning to Kunikida. “You must be, Kunikida-san, I heard all about you from Osamu. Thank you for always looking out for him.”

Kunikida was taken aback, how was the man standing in front of him the head of the Port Mafia? Atsushi didn't even look like he was older than them. “No need to thank me, Atsushi-san, I look out for all my friends.”

Dazai arm wrapped round Atsushi’s arm. “And I really do appreciate it, Kunikida-kun. I know I wasn’t the best person to be around at times.” Kunikida was the reason he even ended up attending any classes in his first and second year of university. Even when Dazai wanted to quit, the blond made sure that he completed his assignments. Now they were both in the final year, and it was all thanks to Kunikida that Dazai didn't throw his life away.

“You needed a friend, Dazai, I wasn’t going to abandon you.” Kunikida saw how much Dazai struggled, so he made sure to check in on him and bring him out to socialize with their friends. It was a rough two years, but by the third year, Dazai still had his bad days, but he improved a lot. It wasn't until Atsushi convinced Dazai to talk to a therapist, that Kunikida saw a light in Dazai’s eyes that he never thought he would see.

“If you ever need anything, Kunikida-san, just ask.” Atsushi stated.

The serious, in Atsushi's tone, sent a shiver down Kunikida's spine because he knew Atsushi really meant anything. Kunikida might not approve of Dazai's boyfriend's occupation, but at least he could rest, knowing Atsushi did care for Dazai.
