Elena, after managing to slip into a restless sleep, was rudely awoken by the French Quarter Witches of New Orleans, who had abducted her two nights ago alongside her newly found friend; Hayley Marshall, who died on the second night and her fetus was transferred into Elena, making this the third night, and dragged out of the burial vault, which was lit by numerous candles on the walls, and towards the center of the Lafayette Cemetery.
Although, she was kept out of sight, in the shadows, until she heard the voice of Sophie Deveraux talking;"-Think about it. They call him the Hybrid, right? Bring her out!", and one of the Witches pushed Elena into walking out into the open, and she came face to face with a familiar Original in a Suit.
"Elijah."Elena breathed out, her eyes widening at the sight of Elijah.
"Elena."Elijah looked just as stunned as Elena was, and he stepped forward, his eyes narrowed before he looked at Sophie out of the corner of his eyes."Give us a moment."He demanded, not asked, in a sharp voice.
Sophie, although she was surprised that Elena and Elijah knew each other, which made her curious about their relationship, nodded and gave her Coven Sisters a sharp look, and they brought the duo back to the burial vault, that Elena had been kept in, and gave them privacy.
"You're Human again."Elijah stated, breaking the tense silence between them, as she sat on the table top, watching Elijah pace in front of her."You took the Cure."
"Not willingly."Elena said, scowling at the memory of her fight with her Ancestor of a Doppelganger."Your Girlfriend forced it down my throat."She snipped and didn't miss the way Elijah paused before he continued pacing.
"And you slept with Niklaus?"He questioned her.
"What? No!"Elena spluttered as Elijah looked at her in confusion."I could never... How can you... He killed Aunt Jenna, and me, and terrorised me and my friends, Elijah!"
"Forgive me."Elijah apologised."But you are pregnant."He stated, not needing to confirm it. He could hear the baby's heartbeat echoing Elena's own.
"It's not mine."Elijah blinked owlishly at Elena. Her heart was steady, meaning she was telling the truth."I guess you could say I'm the Surrogate Mother."
"Explain."Elijah said sharply.
"Only if you tell me why you think Klaus is the Father."Elena retorted. She wasn't going to say anything about the matter of her sudden pregnancy until she knew why Elijah believed Klaus was the Father.
Elijah's expression became pinched."The Witches believe that Niklaus is the Father because of his newly Hybrid Status making it possible for him to impregnate women."Elijah answered her question truthfully."But that does not explain why the Witches believe you are pregnant with his child, especially since they told me it was a She-Wolf who was pregnant with his child, and you are not..."Elijah trailed off questionably, as if trying to figure out if there was more to Elena than just being a Human Doppelganger turned Vampire Doppelganger, now Cured Human Doppelganger again.
Elena looked stunned before she coughed."I met a girl, a Werewolf, named Hayley Marshall just outside of Mystic Falls. Not that it really concerns you, but I was leaving Mystic Falls for good before anyone found out that I was Human again."Elena looked away with a grimace, thinking of what could happen if anyone back in Mystic Falls had found that she was Human. It would be so easy to be Compelled again by the Salvatore Brothers, or Klaus and Rebekah, or become a Blood Bag for Klaus' Hybrids again."Hayley and I became travel buddies on the road to here, in New Orleans. I wanted a fresh start."Elena admitted, looking up at Elijah."After about a week of being here, Hayley and I were abducted by those Witches. I was just collateral, I guess?"Elena shrugged."They were doing all these weird, Witchy tests, on Hayley for a day and half, before she got sick. The Witches figured out that she had been Cursed by someone. Some sort of Dark Magic was killing her rapidly, or so they told me. But the next thing I know, I'm being held down on a table like this,"Elena gestured to the table she was sitting on."and Hayley was on another one beside me, growing weaker by the minute. Then one of the older Witches started chanting, and the next thing I know, Hayley is dead, and I'm being told they didn't have a choice but to save the baby, they had to transfer the fetus into me."Elena gestured at her stomach as tears formed in her eyes as Elijah looked at her in silent horror and anger on her behalf.
"They did this without your consent."Elijah said in a whisper."They violated you."He growled as his eyes became hard as steel.
"Yep."Elena said weakly, barely popping the p as she wiped her eyes before the tears could fall."But this is crazy. Vampires are dead. They can't have children."
"But apparently, a Hybrid can."Elijah stated as he began pacing again, more agitated then before, only to pause and look at Elena with an unreadable look in his eyes."You know, Elena, not long after Klaus became a Hybrid, defeated our Father, and forgive me for saying this, was able to create more Hybrids,"Elena shrugged, not really caring about the fact that Klaus could make Hybrids, it was just how he was creating them that she didn't like."I thought he'd be happy."Elijah shook his head."I was wrong."He admitted, surprising Elena that he would willingly admit something like that, having known that men, Vampire, Human, Werewolf, or even Warlocks, didn't like admitting to being in the wrong, but then again, Elijah was always surprising her."He was angrier than ever."Elena bit the inside of her cheek, silently agreeing with Elijah."I wonder if perhaps this baby might be a way for my Brother to find happiness. A way to save him from himself."
Before Elena could process his words correctly, Sophie, having overheard that part of Elijah's speech, entered the burial vault, saying;"I'm glad you feel that way"Elijah turned fully to see Sophie walking towards them."because we need your help."
"What, preciously, is it that you want, and what does it have to do with her?"Elijah asked, making a small gesture to Elena.
"We want to run Marcel and his Vampires out of town. Klaus is the key."Sophie stated boldly."Everything Marcel knows about being a Vampire, he learned from Klaus. Marcel trusts him, looks up to him. He won't see the betrayal coming."
"Yes."Elijah agreed coldly."Well, as I'm sure you're aware, my Brother; Niklaus doesn't like to be told what to do."
"That's why I brought you here."Elijah's eyes narrowed."Marcel drove the Werewolves out of town decades ago. Do you really think he's going to welcome a girl carrying the Half Werewolf baby of the Original Hybrid"Elena couldn't help but place her hand protectively over her flat stomach while Elijah partly hid Elena behind him."into the neighbourhood? Convince Klaus to help us, and no one has to know about the newest members of the Original Family."
"That sounds remarkably like blackmail."Elijah said coldly.
"Like I said, I'm desperate."Sophie stated coldly through gritted teeth and they stared at one another before Elijah heaved a sigh.
"Well, then,"Elijah smiled coldly, yet it was a charming smile."I have my work cut out for me, don't I?"The Original started to leave, but paused as he came to stand next to Sophie."If anything happens to Elena while I am gone, I will hold you personally responsible."He warned the Witch, who tensed but nodded, and then he was gone, most likely to find Klaus.
"You're insane."Elena suddenly said after Elijah disappeared, drawing Sophie's attention to her."Klaus doesn't listen to anyone, bar Elijah, and even then, Klaus barely listens to him. What makes you think this"Elena gestured to her stomach"will?"
"It's a hunch."Sophie stated.
"You're going to get yourself killed because of this hunch."Elena warned her.
Sophie shrugged, looking like she didn't have a care in the world."Like I said, I'm desperate."She turned to leave, only to pause."Besides, it looks like Elijah cares about you."Elena looked away from her, with an unreadable look on her face."If Klaus doesn't help us, at least we can make Elijah help us."Elena, whipping her head back around to face Sophie, watched, in stunned disbelief, as Sophie walked out of the burial vault calmly.
"Crazy Witches."Elena said to herself as she laid down on the table, looking up at the ceiling in silence, waiting patiently for Elijah's return.
She didn't have to wait too long, because the next thing she heard, barely twenty minutes later, was the familiar British Accent that she knew belonged to Klaus, yelling;"I don't need to hear her out!"in a voice filled with so much anger."I assure you, love, there is not a thing on this earth that would make me waste even thirty more seconds of my time. Elijah! What madness is this?"As Klaus went in between raising and lowering his voice, Elena had removed herself from the table, and walked out to where Klaus, Sophie, and Elijah were outside the burial vault.
"Klaus, can you just shut up and listen to them!"She snapped as she came into everyone's line of sight."I think the people on the other side of the Mississippi can hear your screaming."She added sarcastically, glaring at Klaus, who looked at her in shock, followed by confusion, surprise, and shock again.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't my favourite, Human, Doppelganger."A grin spread across Klaus' face as he looked at Elena while Sophie looked at Elena in shock, having not known that she and her Coven had a Doppelganger in their captivity. They had thought she was just a normal Human, who knew about the Supernatural."When did you take the Cure, Love?"Elena just crossed her arms."Alright, don't answer that. That's fine with me."Klaus was still grinning, although his eyes had narrowed, which Elena knew that it meant that he was displeased."What are you doing here, anyway, love?"
"Well, I was trying to make a new life for myself, away from the drama that was you."Elena snipped, feeling a bit moody, but could anyone really blame her? She had barely slept since being taken by the Witches and the Magical Transplant of the fetus had occurred."Only to get abducted by Witches who want to control you."
Klaus looked amused and annoyed at once."You're all out of your minds, if you think you control me by holding her hostage."He said to Sophie and pointed at Elena."Apart from being useful for making my Hybrids, you're not worth anything for me to be controlled by a bunch of Witch, Love. Sorry."Klaus shrugged, looking as if he was truly sorry, when in fact, he, Elena, and Elijah knew he wasn't.
"Marcel may be able to keep us from practising real Magic in this town,"Klaus looked at Sophie."but as Keepers of the Balance, we still know when Nature has cooked up something new."Sophie suddenly said before Elena could even start to form a sentence in retaliation of Klaus' sarcastic words."For example, I have a special gift of sensing when a girl is pregnant."
"What?"Klaus breathed out, his eyes growing wide and wild.
"I know it's impossible-"Elena, glaring at Sophie, started to say.
"What are you saying?"Klaus demanded, looking back at Elena.
"Niklaus."Elijah stated, using Klaus' full name to get his attention."Elena is carrying your child"
"No. It's impossible."Klaus cut Elijah off."Especially for her!"He pointed at Elena, who rolled her eyes."I never... Brother, you know I'd never..."He looked back at Elijah, tripping over his own words, because he had sworn to never again look at a Doppelganger in a sensual or lustful way ever again after Tatia.
"Obviously!"Elena exclaimed, looking just as disgusted as Klaus must have felt.
"She admits to this lie!"Klaus snarled."You're all lying."Elena was silently surprised that Klaus would dare to call Elijah, the only Vampire Elena knew to be true to his very soul, a liar."Vampires cannot procreate."
"But Werewolves can!"Sophie spoke up sharply and continued when Klaus didn't say anything, only pausing at her words."Magic made you a Vampire, but you were born a Werewolf."Klaus turned around to face Sophie."You're the Original Hybrid, the first of your kind and this pregnancy"Sophie glanced at Elena, who glared at her."is one of Nature's loopholes."
"I've never touched you!"Klaus whipped back around to face Elena, enraged, and pointed at her."Tell them!"He yelled, wanting her to tell everyone present that they had never been together.
"We know you didn't!"Elena snapped back, growing tired of Klaus yelling at her."This baby isn't mine, technically. They"She pointed at Sophie, but was referring to Sophie and her Coven."Magically transferred the fetus from the original woman who you"She turned back to Klaus, pointing at him."impregnated!"Klaus opened his mouth to say something."No! Shut up, Klaus!"Elena snarled, surprising both Brothers."I have spent days held captive in a freaking alligator Bayou, because they thought that Hayley,"A flash of recognition appeared in Klaus' eyes briefly, silently confirming to Elena and Elijah that he had slept with Hayley."the girl you did sleep with, was carrying your Magical miracle baby!"Elena started running her hand through her hair."She died, and to save the baby, they transferred the fetus into my womb!"She gestured to her stomach."I'm just the incubator!"Klaus' and Elijah's jaw's actually dropped at Elena insulting herself so harshly.
"Elena..."Elijah reached out, placing his hand on her shoulder, pulling back.
Elena blinked, not realising she had moved into Klaus' personal space during her rant."My Sister gave her life to perform the Spells to confirm this pregnancy."Sophie said after a moment of tense silence between the trio, and Klaus turned his attention back to Sophie, choosing to ignore Elena for the time being."Because of Jane-Ann's sacrifice, the lives of this girl and her baby are now controlled by us."Elena looked at Sophie sharply, hearing a but coming."We can keep them safe, or we can kill them."Elena stared at Sophie in disbelief. She was used to people threatening to kill her, but to kill an innocent, unborn, child, which they had done everything to save in the first place, even going so far as to put the fetus inside of Elena, was hitting below the belt."If you take don't help us take down Marcel, so help me, Elena won't live long enough to see her first maternity dress."
"Excuse me!?!"Elena exclaimed, raising her voice, looking ready to murder Sophie.
"Enough of this."Elijah said sharply, keeping Elena back with one hand while placing the other on Klaus' shoulder."If you want Marcel dead, he's dead. I'll do it myself."Elijah declared.
"No."Sophie said immediately."We can't, not yet. We have a clear plan that we need to follow, and there are rules."
"Now you've done it."Elena whispered to herself, slightly calmer now.
Klaus turned around to face them with a deadly look in his eyes."How dare you command me,"Klaus said icily."threaten me with what you wrongfully perceive to be my weaknesses! This a pathetic deception! I won't hear anymore lies."Klaus said to Elijah, walking past him.
"Niklaus,"Elijah stated, causing Klaus to pause and look back at him."listen."
Klaus slowly turned to look at Elena, who raised an eyebrow at him, and without meaning to, he let his gaze travel back down to her stomach, where he could hear a fast but tiny heartbeat, echoing behind Elena's own heartbeat, like a hummingbird.
Klaus' eyes widened momentarily before he looked back up into Elena's strangely calm eyes. Remembering he they were, and who he was with, Klaus' eyes became hard and cold once more, like the icy sea, and he looked back at Elijah, who smiled slightly.
"Kill her and the baby."Klaus said harshly, shocking Sophie and Elijah, while Elena just closed her eyes briefly, as if she knew this was coming."What do I care?"He said before leaving.
"Well, I'm out."Elena, throwing her hands up in annoyance, said as she removed herself Elijah's grasp and turned to leave, only for the Witches, who had come to stand behind her, on either side of the pathway, blocked her path.
Elena turned back to Elijah as he moved closer to her."No one touches her."Elijah almost growled at Sophie in warning as he spoke in a soft, but firm, voice."I will fix this."He promised, but it was more for Elena's benefit then Sophie's, but the Witch in question didn't know that, and nodded to her fellow Witches, who moved aside when Elijah went to follow after Klaus.
"Niklaus."Elijah called out his Brother once he found Klaus.
"It's a trick, Elijah."Klaus stated.
"No, Brother. It's a gift."Elijah said, stopping and Klaus also stopped."It's your chance. It's our chance."
Klaus turned around to face him."To what?"
"To start over, take back everything we lost, everything that was taken from us."Elijah explained."Niklaus, our own Parents came to despise us. Our Family was ruined, we were ruined. And since then, all that you have ever wanted, all that we have ever wanted was a Family."Elijah walked towards Klaus, who looked back at him with glassy eyes.
"I will not be manipulated."Klaus turned around to walk away once more, only for Elijah to be standing in front of him.
"So they're manipulating you. So what? With them, Elena and this child, your child"Elijah quickly added."live."
"I'm going to kill every last one of them."Klaus said, pushing Elijah and turned around again, only to find Elijah in his way again.
"And then what? Then you return to Mystic Falls to resume your life as the hated one, as the evil Hybrid? Is it so important to you that people quake with fear at the sound of your name?"Elijah questioned Klaus.
"People quake with fear because I have the power to make them afraid!"Klaus corrected Elijah."What will this child offer me? Will it guarantee me power?"
"Family is power, Niklaus."Elijah gritted out."Love, loyalty, it's power. This is what we swore to one another 1,000 years ago before life tore away what little Humanity you had left, before ego, before anger, before paranoia created in this person before me, someone I can barely even recognise as my own Brother."Elijah said as Klaus stared at him coldly."This is us, the Original Family... And we remain together; Always and Forever. I am asking you to stay here. I will help you, and I will stand by you. I will be your Brother."Elijah promised."We will build a home here together."Elijah placed a hand on Klaus shoulder."Save your child."
Klaus put his hand on Elijah's shoulder."No."He said softly in a whisper before walking away.
"Well, he's doing what he does. Given a chance of happiness, Klaus runs in the opposite direction."Elijah said as he walked down the, almost completely bare, streets of New Orleans.
"Then let him run."Rebekah stated as she turned off the lamp."That child, if it's even his, is better off without him."
"He's not better off without that child, Rebekah, neither are we."Elijah retorted as Rebekah turned off another lamp.
"Darling, kind, Elijah, our Brother rarely brings us anything but pain."Rebekah said knowingly."At what point in your life will you stop searching for his redemption?"
"I'll stop searching for his redemption when I believe there is none left to be found."Rebekah ended the call with a silent sigh after Elijah got the last word in before turning around when she heard movement behind her and found Katherine standing there.
"I'd give you a play by play but you have the air of someone who's been lurking and listening."Rebekah said, knowing fully well that Katherine had indeed done just that.
"He'll come around."Katherine said with false sincerity in her voice."You know Elijah."She smirked at Rebekah."He won't stop until he's convinced Klaus to do the right thing."
"I know you consider yourself to be an expert in Brotherly Dynamics"Katherine nodded."but you don't know my Brothers as well as you think you do."
"You're wrong."Katherine retorted, pushing herself off the edge of the table."Klaus won't be able to walk away from this. He and I are the same."Rebekah's eyes narrowed as Katherine walked towards her."We manipulate, we thirst for power, we control, we punish, but our actions are driven by one singular place deep inside."Katherine explained, getting in Rebekah's personal space.
"And what's that?"Rebekah looked at Katherine with narrowed eyes.
"We're alone."Katherine said truthfully, surprising Rebekah."And we hate it."Rebekah's eyebrows furrowed while the brunette glanced away from her."Tell Elijah to call me when he comes home."She smiled."I'll be waiting for him."Katherine started to walk past her.
"He won't be coming back."Rebekah suddenly said, causing Katherine to pause, but not look back at the blonde."Not since he now knows where Elena is."The blonde turned, watching as Katherine tensed at the mention of Elena."In fact, why would he return to you? Especially after you shoved the Cure down her throat without her consent?"Rebekah started to smirk, knowing that her Brother caring for Elena just grated on Katherine's nerves."He won't leave her alone in that City, not alone with Klaus, or to fend for herself, especially since she's Human now."Rebekah said knowingly.
"She's a weak and pathetic, substitute of a version of me."Katherine snapped angrily.
"Keep telling yourself that."Rebekah said, her smirk just growing by the minute as she got under Katherine's skin, and Rebekah crossed her arms, looking smug."If anyone's a replacement for anyone in Elijah's mind, it's you."Rebekah stepped closer to Katherine."You were the replacement for Tatia, and now you're the replacement for Elena. How does it feel? Knowing that Elijah never loved you at all?"Snarling wordlessly at Rebekah, Katherine sped out of the house.
"Marcel and his Vampires are out of control."Sophie said to all of the Witches in the largest Mausoleum they could gather in."Something had to be done."
"And the solution is to bring in more Vampires?"Agnes questioned Sophie, her hands on her hips as everyone else remained silent, including Elena.
"These aren't just any Vampires, Agnes. They're the Originals."Sophie said, glaring at Agnes.
"And what makes you think you can control the Hybrid?"Agnes asked, turning the situation back to Klaus.
"She can't."Everyone turned to see Elijah leaning against a wall."Not entirely certain that I can, either,"Elijah walked into the room."but now that your Coven has drawn his ire, I have a question."Elijah stated."What prevents my Brother from murdering you instead of cooperating?"
Sophie went over to the wall and picked up a straw voodoo doll. She came back over and showed it to Elijah before throwing it on the ground before pricking herself with a pin. When Elena suddenly yelped softly in surprise, Elijah was by her side in seconds, while everyone else turned to them in confusion, only to see Elena looking at her hand as it bled.
"Ow!"Elena exclaimed, realising what Sophie had done."You linked us?"She asked, but was ignored, although Elijah did look at her curiously, wondering how she knew exactly what Sophie had done.
"The Spell my Sister performed, the one that got her killed, it didn't just confirm the pregnancy."Elijah turned to look at Sophie."It originally linked me Hayley, but before she was killed, and when Hayley started to die, my Sister undid the Spell, and re-linked me to Elena."Sophie gestured to the Elena."So anything that happens to me happens to her, which means her life is in my hands."Elijah stared at Sophie blankly, yet Elena could see the rage as clear as day in his eyes no matter how hard he tried to hide it behind his blank face and the walls behind his eyes."Klaus may not care about his own child,"Sophie had a smug look on her face now."but it's very clear what it already means to you. If I have to hurt Elena, or worse, to ensure that I will have your attention, I will."
Elijah took a step forward, a dark loop-side smirk on his face, revealing his blunt fang."You would dare threaten an Original?"
"I have nothing to lose."Sophie said with a shrug, looking as if she didn't have a care in the world."You have until Midnight to get Klaus to change his mind."Sophie said seriously.
After Elijah had left to do whatever it took to keep Elena alive, the Elena was forced to go back to the burial vault, where she got little to no sleep since she was stressing out, although she knew she shouldn't, because Elijah always kept his word, by what had happened in the last couple of hours. So, when she heard the gates squeak open, signalling that someone was coming inside, Elena tensed as she looked in the direction of the gates, only to relax when she saw Elijah standing there.
"Ok, I hate to sound like a bitch right now,"Elena slowly got to her feet."but considering everything that has happened, can I just say; What the hell, Elijah!?!"Elena exclaimed as she moved closer to him, although she was relieved to see him, she wasn't happy with being stuck in a burial vault for another day."You leave me in some filthy tomb over night? Has everyone forgotten that I'm"Elena gestured to herself."pregnant?"Sophie ducked her head while Elijah merely smiled at the return of Elena channelling her inner Petrova Nature.
"Release her to me,"Elijah glanced back at Sophie."as a token of good faith, Elena is caring my Family, therefore she too is my Family."
"Can you not talk about me like I'm not here?"Elena growled out, causing Elijah to look back at her.
"Forgive us."Elijah said gently."Let her come with me. You've done what you've needed to do to keep her safe. Now let me do the same."Elijah, turning back to Sophie, promised."I can assure you there's no one stronger."Sophie stared at him calmly before nodding and turned back to Elena when she stepped forward."Wait."Elena raised an eyebrow at him."Here."He said, taking off his jacket and placed it around Elena's shoulders, causing Elena to smile without realising it.
"I forget how much of a gentleman you are when you're not threatening others."Elena said, looking up at Elijah, who allowed a ghost of a smile to appear on his face."But, I guess this time your chivalry is just a little late to the party."She added before walking around Elijah and Sophie.
"If Klaus betrays us, Elena will die."Sophie threatened Elijah as Elena paused in the doorway, frowning."You have my word on that."She promised him.
"Then I will give you my word."Sophie raised an eyebrow at him."We will be your partners, we will end Marcel's reign but know this,"He looked over Sophie's shoulder, at Elena."if anything whatsoever happens to Elena and her unborn children, you needn't fear Marcel, nor even Klaus, nor anyone more then you will need to fear me."Elijah threatened her."Goodbye."Sophie gave him a tight smile and watched as they walked away, with Elijah placing his hand on the small of Elena's back as he guided her out of the cemetery.
The next day, Elena, who had a much better sleep in comfy, even if they were slightly outdated, bed, at the Plantation House she had been brought to by Elijah, then she did in the Cemetery, was pulling sheets off the furniture. However, one of the sheets was so dusty that when Elena partly pulled it off, dust flew in her face, causing her to cough.
As Elena waved her hands in front of her face, trying to get rid of the dust and get clean air into her lungs, Elijah stepped into the room, and paused."Are you alright?"Elijah asked, looking concerned.
"Just dust."Elena said casually."This place is ancient."She added drily.
"Yes."Elijah agreed as he slowly walked further into the room."It should serve our purposes."He added gently coming to stand on one side of Elena."It's a sanctuary from our business in the Quarter. Right now,you are the most important person in this Family. You need a good home."Elena's breath hitched at the word; home."So, I am curious."He glanced at Elena."In all this time, has anyone asked you how you feel?"
"About having the fetus of a miracle baby transferred into my womb?"Elena asked sarcastically with a humourless smile on her face."Fantastic, Elijah."She quipped.
"About being a Mother."A small smile, full of understanding and worry, formed on Elijah's face when he saw the flash of embarrassment, as well as vulnerability appear in Elena's eyes.
"I..."Elena trailed off as she licked her lips."This isn't how I imagined becoming a Mother."Elena said, her voice thick with emotions."I mean, I was never one of those girls who imagined having the dream house, with the white picket fence, and dream Husband. I wanted to go to College, get a degree, and maybe after a few years, settle down?
