Work Text:
A madman lives in these halls, in the space between breaths and the second before foot connects with metal. He flickers in the corners of eyes and sighs in the hiss of hydraulics. You have lost days trying to chase him, his presence brushing against your senses.
Stop, you call.
Wait, you say.
Who are you? You ask.
The ship groans and wheezes and sputters to life, reacting sluggishly to your hand on the corroded controls. When it kicks, you imagine a hand resting over yours.
My ship.
Who are you?
My lovely, lovely ship. She still wants to fly.
Wait.
Out into the darkness between worlds, my darling.
Stop.
One more time, old girl.

Serenity is still the kind of ship I'm imagining -- an old scrap heap, well-worn and well-loved, not quite legal, with the shade of an owner who died bloody in it.
