Chapter Text
“We really need to find a better way to hide your antennae…” Ray mumbled, ruffling the tangles out of Jackson’s jet black hair, letting his thin antennae bounce free.
Ray didn’t exactly ask to be the father of an alien, it was more like he was forced to keep him a secret so the government wouldn’t dissect him. See, years ago, he found Jackson in a ditch on the side of the road.
It was quite the story.
Ray grumbled incoherenty as his truck sputtered and eventually came to a slow stop on the side of the empty highway. It was pouring buckets and there was just about no one around. He was stuck there alone with a busted engine and no way to fix it. Ray groaned, resting his head on the leather wheel. He was supposed to be at the racing academy at 4:00 PM, now it was 4:20 and he was an hour away. This was a whole headache on its own. A headache and a pain in the ass.
Ray sighed, stepping out of his drenched, black truck and looking around. There had to be nothing for miles, it was just wheat fields, dirt and pouring rain. To make things even better, he was starting to get drenched in the downpour. Wasn’t that just grea-
Ray ceased thought when he heard a small sound. It was barely conceivable, but it was there. Ray listened closer, looking around to try and find the cause of the sound. It was almost like a fish or a yawning dog, lamost unearhtly. Alien like even.
Ray could now somewhat tell where the echo was coming from, from an open storm drain pipe under the wet grass. This was getting really weird. Did someone leave their pet or child in a pipe? Was there an animal in there? Ray had only one way of knowing. He gently squatted down and lowered his head to find…
Well…
It was a small, chubby creature with tan, almost olive skin. It had a little bit of black hair on its head and big, beady eyes. Eyes that stared up into Ray’s like some sort of animal. It’s most prominent feature? Two tiny, green antennae percheda atop its little head.
Ray squinted his eyes, he almost believed he was dreaming. That was not a human, not even an animal. It was some sort of… creature. A creature he had never seen. The creature stared up at him until opening it’s mouth letting out a small, vibrating “wah” sound. It’s voice sounding like it had been high on autotune, definitely not human now.
Ray was shocked, what was this thing? Why was it in a pipe? There were millions of questions racking his brain. He slowly pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
“Hey, Gale, I uh… I got something over here…”
Even now Ray has trouble understanding the fact that Jackson is an alien. Why was he so human? Why was he friendly? It was a mystery.
All he knew was that he had to protect him.
Jackson had grown a lot since he found him. His antennae were much larger with little glowing buds on the top, his eyes were less beady and rather large now, his sclera clearly seen with a grey, almost silver iris. His hair had grown to a metallic black, hints of royal blue seeping in. He was still tan, but had a few subtle markings on his neck, face and arms. He had grown to be rather mischievous, Ray did not learn easily that the boy had sharp teeth… yeesh… Nonetheless, Ray had an undying love for the kid, his little alien baby.
Who wasn’t so “baby” anymore.
Jackson shook his head like a wet dog, his fluffy hair flying all over the place. Ray shielding himself from the rain of… rain. The two had been drenched in the rain after a race.
Jackson stretched like a cat, his antennae perking up as if stretching themselves. “Did they really have to keep the race going in this kinda weather? I mean, half of us almost crashed, we don’t have rain tires on hand all the time.” Jackson said, yawning, his antenna drooped over his face. “I’m cold…” He mumbled, grabbing a thick blanket folded neatly on the couch, which he voluntarely took up half of, and draping it over his cold body. Ray chuckled, sitting next to the young man on the cozy, cyan sofa. “You’re always cold.” He said, messing with the boy’s hair under the blanket. After cold days, Jackso would indulge himself in the same old video game blanket he’s had for years.
He’s had that blanket for years…
It wasn’t too much of a struggle getting the small being into his truck, it basically clung on him like a baby koala… and nipped at his finger. The real struggle was figuring out what it needed. Was it hungry? Angry? Sleepy? There was no way of knowing what this thing was feeling, and Ray certainly had no idea. He was a 30 year old man and had never dealt with small… children(???) Before, so this was a ride.
Ray looked down at the small creature curled up in his passenger seat. It was all cozy in Ray's hoodie like a bed. Its little antennas were drooped down to rest, his eyes shut in deep sleep. He was… almost adorable. Almost a bug, a bug in a rug.
Ray couldn't help but show a small smile. Sure, he was still confused and to be honest, a little scared about this creature, but it wasn't trying to eat him or anything. Maybe it was docile? He bent over, looking the creature in the eye. “You got a name buddy?” He whispered. The creature blinked before swatting at him, bonking him on the nose before curling up once more. Ray held his nose, sure, the creature was too small to hurt him but that didn’t make it any more surprising.
Gale's old 68 C10 Chevy pulled up next to the truck. ‘Finally…’ Ray thought. He slipped out of the truck and onto the old, cracked pavement. “Truck break down?” Gale asked, barely able to keep her hood on in the wind. “Well, yes, but there's also something else.” Gale’s face dropped to a confused stare, she was used to Ray getting into some unusual accidents, but if he was shocked it must've been bad.
Ray carefully moved to the passenger side and opened the door, revealing the tiny being. Gale was unsurprisingly shocked. “Is that a baby?! Ray who'd you-""I found him I'm the storm pipe over there, he was making some weird noises.” Ray explained frantically, waving his hands. The tiny creature stretched its hands, almost like a kitten, its antennae extended aswell, standing straight rather than drooping like usual. It opened his black eyes, turning its head torwards Gale and blinking. It just stared, not budging an inch, just… glaring. Gale stared back, leaning over to the creature's height. “Well aren’t you just adorable, you got a name?” She cooed, scratching its chin with a large finger. The creature gently grappled onto it and made an odd purring sound, as if enjoying the playful hand. Ray was dumbfounded, how come it listened to Gale and not him!? “Awwwww, look at him, he’s such a cutie!” Gale hummed, turning her head towards Ray, who was still shocked. “So he won’t hit you but he will me?” He droned, standing next to Gale, who was now squishing the creature's chubby face with her large hands. Ray had to extinguish his smile, he had to get serious. “We have to find out what it is, I mean, It’s not an animal and regular humans dont have Antennas.” He started, crossing his arms. Gale yawned, picking up the creature in her arms. “Ray, I don’t think this thing is human, I mean, look at him! 0% human, all cutie patootie.” She said, gently playing with the thing in her arms. Ray thought for a moment. “Maybe… my buddy has a friend, Smokey, appearently he knows stuff about… weird things.”
“What you got here is a UFO,” Smoky said, setting the little creature back down on the table. “I don’t think he flies, Smokey.” Ray whispered, his arms crossed. “Not yet! Listen Ray, I’ve seen a lot of weird things, but this can only be described as an Alien, and unidentified lifeform, This thing is interstellar.” The dusty haired man said, adding pizzazz to his sentence with unnecessary hand gestures. The tiny creature splat onto the table, shaking around like a wet dog. Smokey leaned over the table. “Listen Raymond, I know you want real answers, but the best thing I can tell you is: Keep this guy secret, for both of your safety.”
Ever since then, Ray swore to take good care of him. They named him Storm, after how they found him but eventually gave him a somewhat normal name. Jackson, found in a field called “Jackson’s field.”
Now a young man, the alien was still Ray's little boy. He had learned everything about Jackson's species, the culture, the planet, even some of the language… which sounded like computer beeps and crickets mixed together… Ray wasn't exactly great at it… even then, Jackson was the most important thing in his life. He was his baby.
So it was a shock when the racing community, and eventually the world found out.
“Jackson, listen kid, I want you to hide, stay down in the basement until they leave okay?” Ray whispered, hurriedly shoving Jackson onto the basement stairs. “But dad… What if they get you? I don't wanna lose you or Gale, I-” “I won't let that happen. I'll never let that happen.” Ray said, bending slightly to Jackson's height, he moved droopy, shaking antennas out of his face with one, slightly sweaty hand. “I want you to go down in the basement and stay in the little storage room under the stairs, behind the boxes, I promise I won't let anything happen.” He reassured, his hands firmly on the boy's shoulders. Silver tears dared to fall from the alien's eyes, but he wiped them away before nodding and hugging his father.
Before he knew it, Jackson disappeared into the basement, leaving Ray and Gale to defend themselves against the authorities that were destined to arrive.
“You're sure Jackson is safe down there?” Gale grilled once more, washing her hands of the silver coated tears that tried to stain her palms. “It's the best we can do. We'll say he ran away, we'll say he just disappeared after he was discovered and then they'll get out of our hair.” He answered, unsure of himself. Gale sighed, drying her hands. “As long as Jackson is safe.”
Notes:
I might turn this one into its own story, we'll see if I actually finish it or not lol
