Over It All

Summary:

Have you ever thought about how the story goes on? It's mostly clear how our main characters continued their lives. Petra'd gone adventuring, Jesse and Radar continued working, Lukas published his book and maybe even started a new one, and Ivor visited his friends again.
However, we have very little knowledge about how it went for our ex-powerful fellas.
We should begin with a short recap. Xara got left behind when Jesse saved Fred’s people. Romeo visited the Underneath again to make things right. Let’s see how it all happened!

Chapter 1: Oasis

Chapter Text

Xara was trying to do something. Anything. After sleeping at least 12 hours again (despite the constant thunder and wave of mobs), she woke up, obviously still tired. The body needs at least months to recover, she was aware of that.

The purple haired inventor thought about going up to the surface–building a house, finding work, and living a normal life.

Because she was normal. Regular. Ordinary. This didn’t feel right, but she got used to it. There was plenty of time for that in that pitiful prison. She still had some redstone ideas, but without infinite resources, it’s harder to achieve anything.

After some raging, overthinking, and a quiet sadness, she finally made her choice: she would leave. Permanently. This one week was more than enough here. She didn’t see a thing from the new world and even if she would never ever admit it, she was curious.

Grabbing all the necessary stuff from chests she still owned, she left the room where the portal was and where she set up a temporary base. She made sure everything was in her inventory and opening the iron door with a stone button, she exited the tiny shelter. She wanted to look around one last time.

Dodging mobs from left and right. Jogging. Pulling the bow. Dodging again. Running. More running. Drawing out the sword.

At least that Enderman is gone.

There was too much lava around. It was bright, but not admirable. Not anymore.

Furthermore, the rotten flesh diet was much worse than the mushroom stew at the Institute.

The former inmate walked towards her old room. That darned picture was still hanging there. Seeing her happy smile, the vivid background, the way they glowed, casting brightness on each other made her heart ache. The fact that she remembered the moment when it was captured just made it worse. A lot of emotions were twirling in her.

Instead of thinking about them, she took down the painting and slipped it in her inventory.

If I destroy it, nothing will remain from us. But maybe that’s what we actually need.

The tiny moon painting with the stars found its place in her inventory as well. There was no way she was leaving that behind.

She stopped her walk and glanced around once more. The remaining glowstones shining in the area, providing the only light beside the lightnings…The andesite and diorite paths…The symmetrical and the asymmetrical patterns’ balance…And of course, the towering mountains of the mesa biome around the city.

The pale skinned woman walked back to the portal slowly. She knew that if she left, she wouldn’t return for a while. Maybe even never.

When she entered the tiny room by pulling the lever next to the shiny door, she sighed. She picked up the Amulet from the ground. The item in the frame, a lava bucket filled with lava from the Underneath was taken out.

It must have worked…

She set the Amulet in again and the portal lit up like it did every time, reliably. As an Admin, she didn’t find this amusing or intriguing. That time, it was a magical sight.

She took a glimpse of everything for the last time.

Goodbye, Oasis.

She stepped in.

Chapter 2: Beacontown

Chapter Text

There was levitation. A bump. And–needless to say—it was night. What else would it be?

“Ahhh…! I had no idea this was this… unpleasant?” she spoke up.

She slowly rotated on her back on the dirt ground. She felt some stone below her feet. This meant she landed somewhere near a building.

After slowly getting up, she scanned her surroundings. No monsters yet. She’d have spotted them immediately. She grabbed her bow, gripping it gently. Always be prepared.

When she searched the sky, she stared for a long time. Could she explain why? No, not at all. It happened probably because of the astonishing white radiance of the full Moon and the tiny stars in the sky that were enveloped by blackness. It wasn't the muddy, gray, foggy blackness with the bedrock. It seemed endless, utterly free.

She was one of the creators of the previous world, come on… That didn’t mean that the scenery wasn't breathtaking though.

The building behind her seemed like a base for a group that probably dissolved a long time ago, seeing it wasn’t in the best condition. The vines growing on it reassured her that she was indeed in the new world. The ex–Admin recognised the amulet’s shape on the building.

Wait. How am I going to return it to Jesse?

She always thought through stuff, not leaving room for any unpleasant surprises. This time, she didn’t. That wasn’t reassuring.

She could make out some beacon illumination in the distance, but some nature blocked her view.

This building it is then.

She walked in the ruins, stones and various shades of gray all around her. A map was hanging on one of the walls, being really detailed and colorful. It really popped in the dull surroundings.

She headed to one of the windows to see where the beacon lighted.

Oh, that’s Romeo's work. It’s literally floating…

Behind the beacons, a huge floating tower could be seen. It was impressive (just like many other buildings of his) and some dark patches, probably trees, were on it. She was expecting lava, but it couldn't have been seen.

She wasn't sure what that town was, but it clearly had some connection with Jesse, like this temple–like building there.

So she decided to head there next. She’d hardly admit it, but she was really grateful for what Jesse had done for her. Xara wasn’t bad at building or anything, but she didn’t really want to construct again. Not after losing almost everything.

A part of her wanted to avoid the seen civilization though.

Her tiredness won over, and she set her bed close to the window and collapsed. Within a minute, she was fast asleep.

The moment the morning sun appeared in the sky, her eyes popped up. She sat up in a second and jumped out of the bed.

She elbowed on the window and what she saw was prettier than she remembered. The somewhat emotional woman almost gazed at the Sun even when she knew she wasn’t supposed to, as it might blind her.

She was just scouting for some time, admiring the different buildings in the town as she finally had the opportunity to examine them properly.

The colourful beacons were enticing to anyone who laid eyes on them, and Xara was no exception.

She stepped away and picked up her bed, curiosity and social anxiety creeping up in her.

Exiting the old building, she walked on a stone road that she assumed led to the seen town. She also wondered if she should call it a city… It wasn’t tiny at all.

The road was leading through some hills with trees for some time. Some monsters were still burning, leaving bones, arrows, and rotten flesh behind. She picked some up, leaving the rotten flesh. It can come in handy sometime.

The hills changed into a flat area as she got closer and closer. She wasn't rushing. The sky, the trees, the grass all got some gazes from her and something warm and unfamiliar rose inside her. Not joy, not yet–but close.

The town had a robust wall she could spot from not too far away, and she assumed the gate had some sort of machinery to it, since levers or buttons couldn’t be seen.

She had to enter, even if she felt strong and weary at the same time.

When she got within 2 blocks reach, the gate opened.

Not many people were on the streets and they didn't really mind her entrance.

Seeing people did make her a bit more conscious about herself. She still wore that worndown prison outfit, and something had to be done about that if she didn’t want them to ban her forever.

As she ran her eyes through everything, she got a bit disoriented by the characteristics of the town. It was messy, yet neutral and peaceful.

Mines on the left, some decorations on the right, and a long main road.

As she walked slowly, surveying the town, she still wasn’t sure if this was Jesse’s town or not. Nothing really convinced her yet.

 “Xara?”

It was a female voice. Xara froze. She instinctively grabbed her bow, gripping it like someone might have attacked her.

 “Behind you.”

She twirled around slowly, not being sure how far this person was.

“Hi! I’m sure you don’t know me, but I know you. Your purple hair was key to recognising you.”

She wasn’t familiar with the girl indeed. The missing forearms and the ice blue eyes gave her hints about the woman.

“Hi. Are you from Fred’s Keep?”

The girl nodded and smiled.

“I’ve decided to live here in Beacontown. It's safe and full of inspiration. I’ve always had some connection to people with a heart of gold, so why not stay here?”

So, Beacontown it was. Fitting name, to be fair. They had more than one of those things.

She nodded.

 “This is Jesse’s town, right?”

The girl’s smile never faltered.

“Yes. I’m really glad that you decided to leave that place and I highly recommend living here. Everyone from the Underneath is welcomed here!”

She paused for a moment and she squinted slightly, expressing uncertainty.

Xara wasn’t sure what to say about that. She had an idea why she was uncertain; not everyone was welcomed in the town.

“I'm Wanda, by the way. I’m honored to meet you in person!! I never had an opportunity to travel to the Oasis. Just feel free to visit me and ask questions. I live in the outskirts of the town. When you’re walking in the morning or in the afternoon, you’ll probably see me outside, painting. Never giving up on that…”

Sympathy–something unfamiliar–rose in her.

Then she knew: if she wanted to listen to talking, she could definitely visit this young woman.

Fred did have lovely people around. We were just too…distracted to notice. Wait… we? No. I was too distracted to notice. No idea what that monster felt.

“Thank you, Wanda. I am… keeping that in mind.”

She meant what she said, because Wanda seemed like an emotionally intelligent person, who could give her advice about everything.

“Don’t mention it. Also, I’d recommend Sheepers to you. It just opened, and it's a firstclass clothing shop.”

Wanda’s help was like water in an oasis (!) in the dry desert right now to Xara, even if the painter wasn’t aware of that.

“And… where can I find this place?”

Wanda couldn’t point to the direction, so she just answered;

“Turn to the left here and walk straight. The building is pretty outstanding because of the colorful blocks around.”

Xara nodded, and stole a look at the street to her left, noticing some people who’d definitely noticed her, being in a narrow street.

It’s not that bad. At least they aren’t prisoners who are afraid of me…

Wanda flashed a smile again.

“I gotta run. See you later, Xara!”

Chapter 3: Sheepers

Chapter Text

Xara’s lips didn’t curl to a smile yet, but joy bubbled in her. The anxiety did appear on her face, much to her disliking, but Wanda didn't seem to judge her for that; at least, not obviously.

Wanda's loud, friendly bye was followed by her short and almost inaudible bye. When Wanda walked away, she finally had to face her fears.

She was trying to be as rapid as possible. The town’s buildings were awesome and lovely decorations were everywhere. Some Beacontowners glanced at her, their expressions all different. She wasn't looking them straight in the eye, which’d have been the worst thing to do.

The clothing shop was a wooden building with all sorts of different colored wools around. Some flower bushes were planted around the double door, unsymmetrically, making the place a bit more natural and charming.

As she approached, the text on the signs above the door could be seen.

Sheepers. We should make clothes from wool, not leather.

Open 6–18

Creativity is unmeasurable here!

She claimed to herself. She opened the door of the mediumsized boutique, stepping in.

Inside, she was welcomed by a ton of armor stands. Only one block separated the stands, each wearing a full fit. Glowstones sat in each corner of the room, covered by oak trapdoors. The room was clearly designed by builders who understood that space was needed.

Everything could be found. The right handside was reserved for women, and the left was for suits and shirts and other necessities for men.

She walked further, slowly approaching the right side.

Stunning pieces everywhere. From a plain, simple t-shirts to ball gowns, everything could be found at the section.

She was familiar with color theory to some degree, as R-that person (she was feeling gracious today, calling him a person ) told her about that unbelievably long time ago.

Using those memories and knowledge, she decided to go for the dark, beige, and gray clothes first. Lilac also helps to cover pale skin, but other colors are too vibrant. She wasn’t craving attention at all.

A simple, lilac colored top caught her eye. A chest was placed next to the set, consisting of other colored variations of the shirt and the jeans.

She picked the t–shirt up and searched for almost black jeans in the chest, finding it pretty quickly. She was getting slightly… enthusiastic?

As she walked to change, she spotted some men at the end of the shop, talking about something she couldn't and wouldn’t make out. She knew it was impossible to not meet anyone when it's clearly the only clothing store in the whole town. Ladies were looking through some blouses as well, and a young woman with short blonde hair was also eagerly examining a skirt.

One older lady noticed her, but she did not have much time to analyse Xara, as she swiftly entered the tiny room to finally put on that set.

The changing room was small, and the fact that it was empty was probably because it was only about 9 in the morning.

She glanced at the mirror, and what she saw didn’t satisfy her at all. Hair all over the place, face pale and a bit red, probably from the Sun (or the embarrassment?) I have to be careful. This exposure might cause pain. The bags under her eyes gave the impression like she never slept in her life. The orange prison suit had mushroom stew stains over it, with holes and dirt. A lot of both.

The Sunshine Institute's fugitive sighed tiredly, regarding the clothes she hoped would make her look normal. She started removing the orange trousers. The material of the jumpsuit was pleasing. She dropped it on the floor, feeling it again that it was over. She was free. Some signs of her past were still there, but one tiny element had been wiped away again.

As she adjusted the jeans and darted a glance at the mirror, she perceived that it matched her eye color. A tiny, almost unnoticeable sign of glee formed on her face.

Removing the orange coat was the second part. The shirt she wore below was in pretty nice shape, not being disposed to the weather and the events happening with Xara.

When the outfit was on her, she only stared at herself for some time.

I look… decent…

Something was missing from the outfit though, so she decided not to change back and peeked outside. There were more than enough rooms for the small amount of people at this hour, so she walked out to look for something.

Only minutes later, a dark blue, white–spotted, short scarf caught her eye. Without thinking, she rushed over and picked it up. The material was as soft as her prison suit; the sewer had made sure that it’d be gentle on the neck, as it is a sensitive area.

In a matter of seconds, she had opened the chest and, after a brief search, she selected a black one with white spots.

In seconds, she was back, staring at herself again. The scarf tied the outfit together, the dots giving it some life.

After some eyeing, she had removed all the clothes and following some annoyed growls, she dressed into her prison fit, just to exit and finally pay for the products.

The cashier seemed pretty nonchalant about her, and she was really grateful for that. She didn't even ask the price. These clothes were worth it.

"It will be 10 iron nuggets."

As she paid with ten iron nuggets (she wasn't sure if that was considered a lot or not), she had the feeling that someone was watching her.

When she murmured a bye to the guy at the cash register, she finally resolved to see a fairhaired woman staring at her with a complex expression on her face.

Her blonde hair was a bit too visibly dyed, since she had dark eyebrows and coffee brown skin.

She decided not to ask her about it, and headed back to the mini dressing room to finally look more presentable.

She took a deep breath as she was standing outside the shop. It was too quiet compared to the sound of constant thunder and mobs down there. No monsters running around, no reminders of the close to perfect life she used to have so long ago. It was just…wholesome.

Chapter 4: Beacontown

Chapter Text

She got touched from behind.

Her reflexes were so sharp that she immediately grabbed and squeezed the left arm of the person next to her.

It is her again. What does she want?

The woman was speechless.

 “I am sorry, I…”

Xara let go of her hand. She wasn't proud of that. She wasn’t desiring to be Admin–ish , as that weird friend of Jesse commented not too long ago.

The stylish woman introduced herself.

“Hello. I am Stella, the former mayor of the city nearby. I… I wanted to ask if you were from the Sunshine Institute.”

Xara wasn't mad. Yet . She was reminded of that place again. When’d this end? She assumed never. The fact that she had recognised the fit she wore previously excited her a bit, while she was trying to get herself together. Some silence followed, and she replied, her eyebrows furrowed.

 “Yes.”

After some more silence, Stella spoke up.

“I just… I really like your style, purple is always in.”

Xara didn’t really know what to say (again). She did want to react, but it was clear that the fashionable woman in purple was just trying to be polite, not asking directly.

Stella finally gathered the courage to ask the question that she thought about in the last 60 seconds.

 “Aren't you… Prisoner X?”

Xara’s face was unreadable.

 “Xara. And I only was.”

Stella lowered her gaze.

 “Yes… yes.”

It was hard to talk for Stella, but she knew she had to do this.

“I was an associate in the Institute. I just wanted to… know if my suspicion was right and encourage you a little bit. I’m sure Jesse’d be happy to see you.”

Xara saw how hard she was trying, so she asked.

“Do you know where I can find some lava?”

Stella was taken aback by that.

“We’ve got rid of most, but there is some up in the octopus’ pool.”

Xara nodded. She felt uncomfortable and annoyed in this conversation and wanted to flee. Still, she needed to know more.

I can’t believe I’m always in need of information!! I was an Admin, a creator ! Not… a needy, mortal creature.

“Do you have any ideas where Jesse could be? I’m thinking about accepting your advice.”

Stella let out a weak smile.

“I’m not sure. They could be anywhere, really. Spending time with fans, signing autographs, building, fighting… They’re probably in the Order Hall though. It’s at the end of the main road, behind the flashy beacons. Don’t search for them on the streets, darling. They’re too busy to just walk around and socialise…”

Xara couldn't help but wonder how she became an associate. Instead of asking, she answered.

“I’m familiar with that feeling. Anyway, it was… nice to meet you.”

Stella flashed her million dollar smile, getting her confidence back. She wasn't 100 percent sure about Xara, but she had the feeling that she wasn’t aggressive if she wasn't attacked or triggered.

 “The same here, dear.”

Stella approached the store and entered, waving. Xara waved back, murmuring a Goodbye again.

It was time to contemplate. Leaving or staying?

I should visit Jesse. Maybe a talk with them would help a little.

Past deciding, she started to stroll again, returning to the main road.

The bridge that hung between two buildings made her halt for a moment, admiring the scenery. No need to rush, Xara. There are no monsters around. Just me, myself, and I. And the strangers, naturally.

She approached the octopus, seeing the lava around it. She had no idea why they hadn't bucketed it up yet, since it was pretty hazardous. There were some people on the streets, but they weren't staring at her. Some even beamed at her when they caught sight of her, and she tried to show less frustration, or at least look like she wasn't a mess emotionally and physically as well.

She was actually curious what Jesse and their friends were doing. They rescued her, didn't they? That’s something people never ever forget.

She got to the magnificent beacons. The Oasis used to have some, purple, pink, yellow and blue ones.

A flashback appeared. The sounds of the trapdoors, the Warden’s cold face… The hunger…

It came unexpectedly. She had to stop for a moment.

The water around the light sources stood still. There was something really calming in that. The chatter of random people, the largest star in the sky, the parrots’ sound… Pretty therapeutic. They did help a bit.

After some time, she reached the socalled Order Hall. As she raised her gaze at the tower, she had to admit: It was divine. The whole town was just inviting. It’s something she hadn't felt for a long time.

As she walked on the stone floor, it seemed like a selfopening door was in front of her again that opened when there was movement. She didn’t stop walking as the door opened.

Chapter 5: Romeoburg

Chapter Text

Everything was calm, except that nothing was actually calm. Not just on the outside, but on the inside as well.

Three figures were seen in the grand castle. It certainly had a vibe with the different shades of red and gray. Two girls and a llama were the seen figures, existing.

The more energetic member, Soup caressed Brown, who did like the affection given to him.

“Do you ever think about that Jesse person?”

Val, Soup’s bestie and only friend, lifted her eyes up from her sword that she was sharpening at the moment.

“Of course I do. They had done something we never thought was possible…”

Soup just looked back at the brown, thick llama fur, examining it as she had never seen such a thing before.

Val spoke up, seeing her being weirdly contemplating today.

“From what they had said, I assume they left this place. That means there might be a way to leave.”

Soup looked at her like her comment was about the sky being green and the ground blue.

Val rolled her eyes. Soup ended caressing him for a moment to answer.

“Do you want to leave? I mean, this place is our comforty placething, you know…”

“I know… I do want to see some animals again though.”

Soup smirked, looking at the almost over sharpened sword.

“Wow. I’d have never guessed that's the reason.”

Val sent her a glare.

“Hey! It’s easy to miss them. I love Brown, but some adorable pigs and sheep’d brighten me.”

Soup hugged Brown’s neck gently but firmly.

“She does love you, fluff. She just appreciates other animals as well.”

As they were having this simple chat, they heard some footsteps not too far away.

Val pushed herself off the stone brick. She set her sword to her waist and headed to check the noise. Val followed her and whispered a stay here to the animal, leaving the llama behind.

They both climbed up the ladder, with this familiar anticipation inside.

When they were up there, their breath was gone for some moments.

Close to Romeoburg was the creator himself. His face was worn, bags under the eyes, showing he wasn’t practicing the much needed activity of sleeping. He looked like a hobo, red hair longer and facial hair grown out.

He was thinner than they remembered, and his confident posture was gone. Scars could be seen on his arms, probably because of meeting others who showed him how they feel about his actions.

And the clothes… Holes and dirt everywhere, like he travelled to the Far Lands or just around a rough area like the Underneath. His shoes were in the worst condition, fully covered in mud and ripped, showing his shocks.

Soup and Val flicked a gaze at each other.

He didn't look at them first, just watched the road consisting of stone, cobblestone, and stone bricks before him as he approached. Then, stopped in front of the gate he built back then. He was still proud of the town after not visiting it for ages.

When he finally raised his head, he noted them.

Soup and Val just watched him. He gazed at them as well.

Soup spoke up in the thick silence.

“You look horrible. I have to admit: It feels nice.”

Val decided to get real, crossing her arms. Him coming here was truly unexpected.

 “What do you want?”

Romeo spoke up, trying to be audible after not talking for some time.

 “I came to help.”

Val’s first thought slipped out.

 “What?”

Soup chimed in.

 “Yeah, what?”

Romeo dropped his gaze at the stone again.

“There is a way out. I have already told others about it.”

Val’s eyebrow rose, exchanging looks with Soup. Soup murmured to Val.

 “It’s time to decide.”

Val nodded. She kept her arms crossed, and asked a logical question.

“Do you know where it is?”

Romeo didn’t lift his gaze.

 “Yes. It’s in the Oasis.”

Soup and Val were aware this decision wasn’t gonna be easy. Can they trust him? He used to tell the truth almost all the time, but his actions were threatening…Also...should they really leave?

They eyed each other, and nothing was needed to be said. Soup just walked to the lever.

The wooden gate opened. They both climbed off the top, making it clear how they had decided. Soup re–approached Brown, who was standing at the moment, staring at a random lava stream.

“Ya coming with us boy. I’m sure you're missing some llama company!”

Brown didn’t react, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t understood the situation.

Val entered her house. After looking around, she decided to bring everything. The picture of the townspeople, the little pot with a dead bush, the gray wool carpets… and, obviously, her brown bed and the materials in the double chest.

Soup also walked in her cabin. There was some mess.

My bed is coming, the single chest is coming, um… The books are coming as well! Aaand… that's all. Will leave the rest. Let’s go make memories!!

It didn’t take a long time for them to gather their stuff.

While they were in their home, Romeo walked inside the walls, seeing how nothing had changed. Brown walked to him, examining, as he usually did. The possibly only llama in this world nudged his arm with his head.

Ah, so you want attention, ey?

He raised and laid his muddy hand on Brown’s head.

The founder of the town glanced around to make sure they weren’t watching him.

He started to massage his head.

Brown moved closer, leaning to Romeo.

Nope, no way! I WON’T hug you!

Brown was sneaky. He knew exactly how to weaponize softness—and Romeo was losing the fight.

He couldn't risk the others seeing him hugging their llama. They would mock him and laugh, get furious, or express their pity that he didn’t deserve and want.

He stopped caressing the stubborn, needy llama, and walked to the bridge that was above the lava surrounding the challenge room. Romeo leaned against the bridge railing, staring into the lava. The way it moved and brightened up the area made him hope it was a bit bearable to live here without the Sun’s glow.

"Alright, Hobo Boss! Time to get outta here!”

Val’s harsh tone could be heard not far from him. Soup was eagerly standing next to her, just a few things in her inventory.

Romeo gave a slow nod and walked toward the gate with quiet resolve. Soup and Val joined him with Brown, whose head had some mud from Romeo’s hand.

As the little group left Romeoburg, the dead, old, leafless tree standing next to the road reminded each of them that they will still have struggles.

Chapter 6: Oasis

Chapter Text

Soup and Val were professionals in fighting, even if they didn't have to do much in Romeoburg’s closed walls. They got rusty for sure, but their skills still showed. They didn’t count, but it was probably the fifth horde of mobs that they destroyed through their journey.

That is why they didn’t have time to chat with Romeo. They also didn’t really want to talk to him and they saw that he was deeply focused while they fought.

Then, they were all sitting in the Oasis and relaxing a bit before they’d leave the Underneath.

The cobblestone they settled down on wasn’t comfortable, but Romeo’s eyes still started to shut down.

Soup and Val glanced at each other, and they smirked. They found that detail rather endearing.

Val never thought his presence would bring them smiles.

Brown was munching on a death bush not too far away, and Val wondered how the heck did he manage to survive on that.

Val decided to have mercy on Romeo, so she spoke up.

“I think we should sleep. All of us are tired.”

Soup’s convenient idea that they should sleep in that room with the portal was accepted by everyone. It wasn’t huge, but big enough for sleeping.

Brown didn’t like small rooms, so he wasn’t entering with them. He just sat his sweet"llama butt down in the entrance.

The sight of the portal made Soup and Val nervous. Portals are fascinating, but entering them is an unpleasant feeling, a chaotic experience.

There was a double chest in the room, but when Val rummaged through it, she shook her head.

Following scanning around, Soup settled down on one side with the black bed, while Val settled her brown bed on the other side. They were close friends, but they still needed privacy.

Romeo stopped at the door. The portal was lit, so it was alright. People already left (hopefully), including Xara, who fixed the portal and presumably set up this base.

He walked to the back of the portal slowly, and stretched out on the hard ground, exhausted. Soup and Val stared at him, exchanging looks.

Was he gonna sleep on the ground?? That is really humiliating and inhumane! Both girls felt content at that thought. He deserved it, it was alright.

 "Good night, everyone!”

Val rolled her eyes.

"It’s just you and me, you know!”

Soup’s expression showed muse, but the others didn’t see that, obviously.

 "Maybe…”

Nobody responded, and the girls fell asleep relatively quickly.

Romeo, however, was a mess. When Soup and Val pointed out the obvious that he looks nasty, he realised he had let go of himself too much. Vulnerability was a no go. But then, he was nothing but that.

Val talked in her sleep after an hour of them dozing off, and Romeo was cheered up a bit by the chicken jockey movie at the wedding .

The portal sounds always calmed him, but at that very moment, it was troublesome.

What if I…

He stood up rather quickly, and quietly made his way out of the room. The iron door was thundering, and he could only hope that they didn’t wake up. His iron sword was in his hand the next moment, and he slayed some zombies on his way to the room.

Oh, how much I love this!

A couple of minutes passed, and he arrived at Xara's old room. It was just like he left it, except for two things.

The pictures are gone…

The redstone torch in the corner provided the light to him, casting reddish light everywhere.

He remembered correctly; there was wool in the wall as well! It wasn’t red, but he shouldn’t be picky, should he? There had been other places where he’d have gotten wool from, but he wanted to check this room.

He stared at the wool blocks. Just pull one out, he told himself. But something held him back. It was necessary, though. Not just for himself, no. For others.

The girls’ sleep wasn’t disturbed by mobs, so it was a neat decision to settle down in the portal room. When Val woke up, she was a bit sweaty. Not remembering her dream or any night events, she had no idea why she was sweaty.

Soup, however, slept wonderfully, even if she remembered waking up at some point.

When townspeople left their bed (it took Val way too much time), they were ready to leave. At least, they felt like that at that moment.

When they walked to see Romeo, they couldn’t help but laugh.

Romeo’s eyes fluttered, being woken up.

 “You didn’t die, don’t worry!”

Val fistbumped Soup for that comment, and they giggled.

Romeo understood it. Him clinging to a purple wool block was embarrassing. He didn’t really consider what happened if they saw it when he grabbed the block. However, their reaction was normal.

That kinda made him feel better. They weren’t crazy or broken, and didn’t add more crimes to his already long list.

Romeo stood, slower than usual. Some life had returned to his face, even if it flickered.

“You just need a bit more sleep and a barber, and you will look as handsome as you used to!”

Val nudged Soup hard in the arm.

 “Now that comment deserves this…”

They were really having fun, and Romeo let out a tiny, weak smile.

After they settled down a bit, Romeo spoke up.

 “Are you… ready to leave?”

The girls cast their gaze downward. Val answered first.

 “Yes… well, I think… I hope so.”

Soup scratched her neck.

 “Yeeeaaahh… Sure. Uhum.”

Romeo flicked a gaze at the portal.

“It’s not pleasant, but it’s worth it.”

Soup and Val looked at the portal too, and they picked up their beds.

The calmer member of the duo exited the shelter, pushing the stone button. Brown was also awake, having breakfast as he was devouring another part of the dead bush.

“Brown, let’s go! I hope you aren’t afraid of portals as we are…”

Brown lifted his neck from the bush, and was led by Val to the room.

A skeleton decided to shoot Brown’s human company, but it probably regretted it later, since the girl’s iron sword murdered it in seconds.

“No one attacks when I’m with Brown!”

Val pulled the lever, and the four of them were standing in front of the portal stairs now.

Romeo stepped up first. He glanced back in front of the portal, his face being lit by the rainbow light. He was just making sure they followed him.

Being pretty eager, Brown settled a leg on the stairs, following the ex–Admin. Soup climbed up as well, and Val was the last one.

They were standing in a line then.

Romeo stepped in.

Chapter 7: Order Hall

Chapter Text

The ceiling height surprised Xara. From the outside, it didn’t seem that grand. Quartz and diorite were the main building materials, making the whole place look royal and striking.

There were two wings, but she assumed that behind the next door was the main area, where Jesse could be found most of the time. She didn’t notice any buttons or levers or pressure plates (they got skills alright!), so she confidently moved close.

The door did move up, and Xara was expecting some guards, getting ready to catch her and kick her out. There weren't any, so she casually walked in the room.

That glass window is everything.

She sighted 2 figures standing in front of the glass, probably having a discussion. Her nervousness rose with some eagerness as well, as it always did when she talked to people with a right heart.

The red wool below her feet was comforting, and so were the mountains in the window that she liked the most in the whole place. The items all shone, showing off how cool they actually were, ignoring the fact that the Sun makes them actually marvelous. She hoped for the best while she examined the main hall.

The R named guy and Jesse were standing there, deeply focused on the talk they just had. As she walked closer, they both moved their heads to her direction.

Their faces were really different. Rowen (?) showed uncertainty and some fear, while Jesse was excited.

“Xara?! Hello! I am really happy to see you! How’re you doing? What brought you here?”

Xara knew Jesse was only asking normal questions. Still, all those questions made her question her judgement about coming here.

“Hi. I just… wanted to ask if there was room for newcomers.”

I am telling the truth, and I’m not telling the details, that’s all.

Jesse grinned.

“Sure there is! There’re always some so you’re welcomed here! Members from Fred’s keep also settled down in our humble little town so don’t hesitate to move here if you’d like to!”

Is everybody I approach on cloud nine? All those smiles keep me grounded about being the biggest outcast in this world…

 “Thank you, Jesse. Again.”

She studied the guy with the glasses with a hint of respect.

“I still can’t believe that you saved Fred’s people, but I’m really glad it happened. They all deserve freedom.”

The thin, put together guy’s expression wasn't easily readable, since he was just offended and complemented at the same time by someone who had been through a lot.

“I just wanted to help people and make Jesse proud.”

Jesse chuckled.

“That is why you’re my friend, Radar. Your heart is at the right place.”

Radar saluted and beamed.

Xara’s intention was to not make this discourse awkward, so she continued.

“Are there towns or cities nearby?”

Jesse served an answer to her question, still being in a"friendly and light mood.

“There’re for sure. Redstonia and Boomtown. The former is all about inventions, technologies, and there’re many intelligent people around. The latter is focused on griefing and chaos. Two polar opposites, if you ask me. I think you should take a look at Redstonia. Do not settle down at the first option, which is Beacontown at the moment.”

Redstonia…That sounds inviting.

Radar narrowed his eyes and he held up his pointing finger.

 “Actually, Beacontown is the coolest.”

Jesse chuckled.

“For each of its own!”

Xara narrowed her eyes.

 “Are they far away?”

“They aren't if you use my minecart system!”

Radar held his arm.

“I’m not a fan of those, but it's still genius.”

Jesse smirked.

“Come on, let’s go! I have some time to spare, and it has been ages since I was there.”

With that, the group, Jesse leading the way, walked to the self–opening door.

They turned to the left and walked for some time. There weren’t any windows, but redstone lamps provided light, hanging from the ceiling.

The wooden door was reached by the group, which gave Xara a feeling they accessed a personal area in this professional building with all the white blocks and fancy lights. And the gold and diamond and iron, of course.

The room they entered was extremely cozy. Bookshelves, a sofa, 3 armchairs, a brewing stand, crafting table, armorstand, mob heads, and pictures. A lot of them.

The wood felt like a nice change to her feet, and the lanterns they had situated as light sources just made it all look better. Everything's better with lanterns.

I wish I could create interior design like that. Sadly, I can not.

This isn’t our destination, but I highly recommend peeking around. You guys can borrow any book you find, just make sure to show it to me and bring it back. I know I can trust you.

Jesse, I still believe you are gullible. And a good person as well…

The purple haired woman did take her time to examine the pictures. Jesse, the redhead, the guy who had all those posters… and two other unknown people.

The Oasis’ founder thought of her own picture, still in her inventory. A decision had to be made about it, she cannot procrastinate anymore.

Also, the clothes. Whelp.

She shifted her attention to the bookshelves now. Even in this cozy, closed room, she was on guard, seeing every necessary detail. Radar did the same thing (examining the books and keeping a less tense eye on Xara), and he made sure Xara wasn’t too close to him. Better safe than sorry.

Jesse settled down in an armchair, and just… existed for a moment. No impulses, no tragedies, no work… only sitting. Life hits differently when this existence happens to them.

Sense and sensibility…Interesting.

She grabbed the book. The back of the book didn’t have a description. The spine was cracked, the corners soft with handling—someone had loved this book.

Without much thinking, she slipped it into her inventory. Giving it a try was a good idea.

Jesse and his group (they sure have a name, don’t they?) had too many books, and she wasn’t that much of a reader.

The woman with the black scarf used to read books. Redstone technique books? Inspiration for building a town? Dealing with the lack of ideas, or maybe techniques about burnout prevention? And… even romantic books. She’d have never admitted it to the boys back in the day.

Nevertheless, nothing was read by her in ages. It was time that she started again, and not just the ones she used to.

She stepped to Jesse, showing her choice to them.

 “Can I borrow this one?”

Jesse was so used to busy days, but they felt a tiny bit disturbed when something was asked and their existing time was interrupted.

“Um… Yeah, sure. Olivia’s favourite book, I think. I believe you’re going to enjoy it as well.”

Xara didn’t take a long time to realise that Olivia was the girl with stunning black hair."

Radar, keeping the distance, approached Jesse as well, holding a clock.

“Bo– I mean, Jesse. You have to give a speech in 10 minutes!”

Jesse sighed, a smile tugging at the corner of their mouth.

 “Yeah, alright. Come on, guys.”

This spacious room had another exit. It led to a long hallway, and doors could be seen to the right. Each door was different, but there wasn’t anything else indicating what can be found on the other side of the door. Jesse, on the other hand, informed their company about the rooms.

“These are the dorms. I don’t recommend entering the first two ones, Olivia’s and Axel’s room. The guys are messy and gather a lot of junk. Trust me, personal experience.”

When they walked over to the door at the end of the hallway, Jesse kept up the excitement by not opening the entrance immediately.

“This door’s the magical one, leading us to our pumpkin carriage.”

Xara raised an eyebrow at Jesse’s playful tone, but she appreciated the effort.

 “Aham. Sure.”

Jesse didn’t want to wait more, so they opened the door. This room had black terracotta floor and quartz walls, and the gray minecarts fitted the professional vibe. 3 minecarts were sitting there, they probably haven't been used in weeks. A stone button started the system, right above the block that was functioning as the starting point of the rails.

As Xara examined the surroundings, she made out chests and a crafting table in the corner. Then, that guy was underrated for sure.

“This rail system is in the Nether, so we’re always packed up before we go, just in case.”

Offered Jesse, pointing at the chests.

Radar let out a sigh.

“Ah, the Nether. Sheesh. I don’t like that place.”

Xara didn’t remember the last time she set a foot in the Nether. Like, nothing popped up in her mind about the Nether. A different dimension? Okay. It is dangerous and gloomy. Noted. But nothing else.

The engineer checked her inventory, and was content with everything. Diamond sword, a bow with an adequate amount of arrows, an ancient fishing rod from the times they still had water down there, the painting of them, her sky painting, her old clothes, building blocks, fences, leads, redstone, pistons… And more random stuff. Yeah, well. A regular inventory when moving.

Without asking anything, she climbed in the first minecart.

 “Push the button, will you?”

Jesse and Radar exchanged looks, and Jesse walked to the button.

“Alright Xara. Signs will lead the way to Redstonia. I’m sure you’re gonna figure it out.”

The woman pointed up her thumb.

And for the first time, her Goodbye was audible. And she also added See you later. Huh. A delightful surprise. Was it a surprise tho?

Chapter 8: Nether

Chapter Text

Redstone crackled–the wheels and the rails squeaked–and the Nether portal’s ominous hum lasted only a second.

This time, there was no levitation. Or falling to the ground.

The minecart was rapid, almost as fast as she could fly back in the day. The female ex–Admin used to avoid teleporting everywhere, since she found pleasure in running and flying to her destination instead of just being there in a glimpse of an eye.

Romeo always did that. He was too busy and powerful for those activities… Ugh…!!

She didn’t have much time to ponder on that, since she had to revise her redstone knowledge.

The basics were easy. How to craft stuff. Repeater, target block, pistons, observers, dispensers… piece o’ cake.

Second step: basic contraptions. Minecart loading station, item sorter, block swapper…

Her little lesson was rudely interrupted by a cry. A ghast’s voice, specifically.

Oh, you are not aware who you are messing with, do you?

The flying enemy didn’t understand her, obviously, or didn’t even consider doing so and a fireball was sent to her. She dogged it by hitting it back with her sword quickly. What happened astonished her: The monster died immediately when the fireball hit it.

Oh. I remember it needing more hits than one.

Content, she got comfortable in the minecart and proceeded with recalling her skills. By the time the pale woman revised everything she could recollect, she reached the second Nether portal.

The quartz blocks among the netherrack under her feet didn’t tell her much. Being aware the Nether was full of dangerous mobs, she grabbed her bow from her inventory, and gripped it a bit. No way a ghast blows her portal up. And no way someone lounges on her. Naah.

She stopped her tracks in front of the obsidian portal, and took a deep breath.

Maybe, this place will be her new home?

Chapter 9: Overworld

Chapter Text

Some levitating. Lights flashing everywhere. White, blue, yellow… Women screaming. A bump. Hard ground.

It was morning!

The Sun was on the sky, which was a normal state in the Overworld. The grass was thick and green, the bushes’ and trees’ were as vivid as ever, and the sky was doing that iconic color transition from saturated blue to a lighter version. A chicken was nearby, sitting on the grass, as it had nothing else to do at the moment.

Soup and Val landed on their back, while Romeo’s face made contact with the terrain again. Also, a furry creature, the llama king of the Underneath almost got in physical contact with him, but luckily, Brown landed 2 blocks away from the redhead.

Afterwards, the duo stood up, and they wanted to look around.

They never wanted to stay at one place for more time than necessary ever again.

The gigantic world was waiting for them, asking to be discovered.

 “Val, look! A ruined building!”

Val turned to the ruins, and she didn’t push her excitement down this time.

“Oo, yeah. I like the vines everywhere! What do you think this construct was for?”

Soup started to count on her hands.

“It could be for community, for entertainment, like a library, a group’s old building…”

Val crossed her arms.

“We will figure it out, alright?”

Soup held up her hand.

 “Sure we will!”

Romeo sat nearby, arms crossed, quietly watching them. Brown tiptoed to the grass, and took a bite. The ex–Admin was curious about whether he’d like it or not.

After a bite, Brown moved away from the grass. The creature walked back to the hobo–looking man and settled down next to him. His llama head was laid down on his lap before he could protest.

 “Hey!”

Soup and Val were caught off guard, and they’d never admit it, but their heart melted. Especially Val’s.

“He really seems to like you, doesn't he?”

Val's annoyed remark did hide something.

 “Yeah, well, who doesn’t?”

Soup placed a hand on her hip.

 “You, undoubtedly. Don’t you?”

Val furrowed her eyebrows, pressed her lips into a line, and turned her head to the distance, like there was something intriguing to see. To be fair, there was. The whole world.

 “Yeah…”

Soup, being her best and only friend, positioned a hand on her shoulder.

At the same time, Romeo set his still muddy hand on Brown’s brown coat.

Soup though for a moment.

“We should give him to you.”

That crossed a line.

Val spoke up.

“Ain’t no way! He would never, ever be able to take care of Brown!”

Soup moved her palm away from her BFF’s shoulder and crossed her arms.

“You can never be sure about that.”

Val’s eyebrows were furrowed again and she clenched her fists faintly.

“No way. I’m… It won’t be beneficial for Brown. And also not for us.”

Romeo stayed quiet. He wasn’t certain about what he wanted, but seeing Xara was still there. He considered heading to Jesse to sign up for community service as well.

Brown hadn’t moved away from Romeo yet.

Val had to admit Soup was right. There was a visible connection. That didn’t mean the llama didn’t have a strong bond with the girls, but for some reason, he connected with Romeo.

Val decided.

“Alright. We should just… stay together and see what can be found in this area. Deal?”

Soup held her thumb up,

 “Deal.”

As Soup agreed, Brown raised his head and slowly stood up. Romeo stood up as well, and waited for them to lead the way.

Soup adjusted her glove and the rubber band on her arm. Her brown shoulder armor slipped out of place, and she quickly adjusted it.

“I’m leading the way! Let’s go!”

That being said, they all started to walk towards Beacontown.

“Oh! Quartz! That city must have been lavish!” – Said Soup.

This had been through the whole trip. Soup and Val alternately commented on the surroundings, from the greenery to the blocks to the people who they occasionally saw.

As they were examining the buildings from afar, a building blew up.

Only a small sound could be heard as the blocks disappeared.

The hole the explosion left wasn’t that obvious for a newcomer, since the whole city was just ruined. For those who saw it happen, it was visible.

Nothing was added.

Val spoke up.

“ Destroying something that has already been destroyed? Wow.”

Soup didn’t comment on that, and neither did Romeo.

Next, they all made their mental notes about this. Soup faced the direction of the coolest town in the world again. The former prisoner of the Underneath didn’t know that it was called that, of course.

As the polished andesite was sounding below their feet, Val set eyes on something.

“Guys, I'm gonna fetch that flower.”

After she stated that, she jogged to the poppy. She didn’t pluck the flower first. Instead, she brushed her fingers through the stem, the petals, and the grass bellow.

 “Lovely.”

The flower was plucked and she returned to the group.

When they made it to Beacontown’s gate, Soup spoke up.

“Ain’t no way I am letting you in looking like that .”

Romeo didn’t understand at first that the girl from his town was talking about him.

Val grabbed this opportunity.

“Alright, Soup, I have got an idea. Me, this guy, and our llama will enter. You can either wait here or chop some trees, or even talk to strangers. Whatever you desire. I’m going to handle him.”

Soup had to admit: that was a great idea.

“Alright… But you know that being seen with an individual like him might attract… Unwanted attention? I mean, I wouldn’t…”

Val raised an eyebrow, interrupting her bestie.

“I suggested the idea, didn’t I? I was calculating that in as well. “

Soup pursed her lips.

 “Okay.”

Brown wasn’t waiting for any sort of allowance, and he triggered the mechanism. Just like that, the gate opened.

 “See you, Soup.”

Soup gestured a V and waved to the group, walking away.

Chapter 10: Redstonia

Chapter Text

The first thing she witnessed was that this town—what seemed like it should be called that—was located on a tropical island.
Being on an island wasn’t favorable, but she wouldn’t judge the town by its location.

Still, when she laid her eyes on the sea, she felt uneasy.
The Underneath’s Best Engineer had to support herself against the sandstone pillars nearby, just to feel some kind of stability.

Great. Just great! I’m pathetic! Weak! This place could be my Heaven, and I can’t keep myself together!

The bridge in front of her was rising piece by piece. It was impressive, and greeting travelers like that was its own way of communicating how intelligent the townspeople were.

The once-powerful woman pushed herself away, frustration still boiling inside her.
She stepped onto the bridge, but stopped after two steps.

The bridge had already completed itself, and yet, she was still frozen at the start.

So, she ran.
The sound of sandstone beneath her feet wasn’t something she heard every day, but somehow, it was calming.

Then, standing on grass, she finally had time to look at the town.
There was a giant, circular building in the center, and many, many inventions scattered around.

They are… they are too professional! I can’t… I haven’t done redstone in a long time… I mean, these structures aren’t perfect, but still…

In this town, people were so focused on their inventions that they didn’t even notice a newcomer exploring the area.

As she studied the fountainlike obsidian farm, flashbacks intruded.
Fred’s face, as her Admin self held it in her lap…
Romeo’s face, when he attacked Fred…
When she got zapped of her powers…
The first sleepless night…

No, no! Not here! I can’t…

 “Hey, do you need help?”

She hadn’t even noticed that she was kneeling on the ground, her face buried in her thighs.

 “No! Yes… I…”

She slowly lifted her heavy head, and there she was: the girl with the gorgeous hair and the iconic green hat. Olivia. That was her name.

The guest slowly composed herself and managed to express something.

 “I… I’m alright now.”

Olivia’s eyebrows furrowed slightly, but she nodded.
As the Hero in Residence (the townspeople called her Miss Protégée), she felt a responsibility to greet Xara properly.

“Welcome to Redstonia, the town where any invention is welcomed! Not any , of course… but most of them are! I admit, I’m curious: is there any particular reason Jesse sent you here?”

Xara rubbed her arm, still humiliated by the breakdown she couldn't even explain.

“I… I’m looking for a place to settle down.”

Olivia’s dark brown eyes showed respect and understanding, but Xara wasn’t sure if that was real—or just her imagination.

“I see. Well, if you need anything, I’ll be around.”

Before Xara could respond, Olivia jogged over to a girl—just in time, perhaps, to stop her boyfriend from being launched into the sea.

Much to her own surprise, Xara found herself more interested in the palm trees she’d noticed earlier.
They looked… special.

The guest jumped down to the coast, landing perfectly.
As the lean woman stood on the sand, observing the leaves and the trunk, she realized something.

This… this is Romeo’s original creation. I… we didn’t… think about this back then.

She massaged her temples. It felt oddly refreshing.

Only when a fish leapt out of the water did her stomach grumble.
Not in a subtle, polite way—but in a demanding way.

Xara didn’t need a second reminder.
She pulled her fishing rod from her inventory and threw the delicious bait into the very sea that still terrified her to this day.

I knew I was going to use that rod sometime. It’s my new life, after all.

Chapter 11: Beacontown

Chapter Text

Val wasn’t into the town. Brown seemed to get great pleasure from the ride though, since he jogged to and stood below one of the large lamps on the road.
"I have to ask for directions. Wait here!"
Romeo nodded, staring at his red sneakers.

An old lady was planting flowers next to a pink heart made entirely out of wool, and Val decided to approach her, since she was pretty close. Loving the flowers, she had to be a nice person who wouldn’t turn her down.
"Excuse me, could you tell me if there was a barber around? Also, I’m hoping to find a washing store and a restaurant as well."

The lady lifted herself from the flowers, and she wasn’t grumpy. To add to that, she didn’t stare at her weird eye color.
"Just turn left here and keep walking. The restaurant’s on the corner, sweetheart. For the barber, oh, Mr. Wolf… such a gentleman! He has prices but his work is professional! For his shop, turn to the right instead at the end of the road on our left… Ah, I think I should show you, it is easy to get lost even in this tiny, lovely town of heroes!"

Val just blinked. First: This town wasn’t tiny. Second: What heroes? Third: Did that entity have money for all this??!
The lady, who seemed to be in incredible shape, took off her gardening gloves and started to lead the way.

Val signaled to Romeo and Brown, and they followed her a bit behind.

The restaurant wasn’t far, but this company did get observed by some Beacontowners. First, a woman in bad condition, in a vibrant orange prison outfit. Now, an afroamerican girl with unordinary features and unique style choices, a weird llama, and a hobo with red hair? And Miss Margaret; why on earth is she leading them the way? What is going on again?
"This is the restaurant."

Val had an idea.
"Brown, Romeo. Follow Mi…?"
"Miss Margaret, dear."
A smile appeared on Val’s dust–covered face.
"Brown, follow Miss Margaret, and wait in front of the store, so Romeo knows where to enter."

Hesitation wasn’t seen on the helpful lady’s face, and she proceeded to the barber store.
Val remained there and looked at them in the distance, as Brown stopped in front of a puny building. Romeo and his short guide (compared to him) turned to the left even farther away, walking between buildings. That must be a shortcut, and she didn’t regret asking for help. Short, effective, and adequate task fulfilment.

The former Romeoburg citizen wasn’t getting bored out of her mind. Waiting was her superpower. This town’s messiness wasn’t appealing to her at all, so the aspiring traveler wasn’t investigating much. It was, well… not her cup of tea.

As her eyes hit the road where the others left, she finally spotted the ex–Admin.
Romeo stopped his stroll at Brown—a small pet on his head—and he entered the barber’s shop.

Val crossed her arms.
For others, it would’ve seemed like an eternity. Romeo and Brown approached her, and both seemed radiant.
Romeo looked brand new. His hair was slightly shorter than it used to be, and the barber did a fantastic job with the facial hair as well. His bang wasn’t in his eye, and his face had been washed as well.
His clothes were spotless—from the shirt to the red shoes—and the holes were nowhere to be found. The adorable elderly lady probably had shown him the way to get his stuff sewed as well.

"Okay… You look fine, I guess. Can we grab something to eat? I’m starving! I assume you haven’t eaten a bite in days, have you?"
Romeo peered away from Val, fixing his gaze on the Mush text on the dark oak sign on the building.
"Yeah… My stomach hurt a bit on the way…"

That being said, the duo entered the modern building.

Stella noticed him.
She choked on her pasta and had to drink some water so she wouldn’t cough. Under no circumstances should they notice her.
He is attractive?... Why?
The blond woman wanted to slap the crap out of herself for staring at him.
When you gaze at someone for too long, they look at you as well. That’s just how it is.
Stella! Stop! You are a queen, and now, you are just enjoying your lunch, and you are NOT looking at that man!

The ex–llama owner took a deep breath. Then blew it out.

It wasn’t working.
She tried drumming on the iron table, as she heard it helped.
Then, she had lost all her appetite. Luckily, there were only 2 bites left, so she didn’t feel that horrible for wasting.

Now. How do I leave without being seen?
She called for the waitress to pay.
While she continued her brand–new way to release stress, she philosophized (even if she tried to avoid that) about why it is so hard to break her eyes away from him. The Admin didn’t have that supermodel face, and facial hair wasn’t a thing for her. Not to mention the bags under his eyes. Consequently, it wasn’t about his appearance.
"It will be 5 iron nuggets."

As the former mayor handed the genuinely friendly waitress the nuggets, she promised herself she’d get herself food instead of purchasing, since this won't be sustainable for long. The filthy mines have to be visited again, if she keeps up this habit.

The catchy pop song of the year, Pigstep, was playing silently, since a restaurant without hits isn’t a proper place.
She had swept her hair out of her face, and stood up.
One thing she didn’t care about was the unnatural woman with the man.

Following the rhythm of the melody in the background, she walked to their table, her posture straight.
"Hello, guys. I just wanted to tell you, Mr. Admin, that I met Xara here, in Beacontown, about 3 weeks ago. I have no idea where she is right now, but I thought it’s better to inform you about it. And… enjoy your meal!"

That was all that had been said, and she left the restaurant.

"I just complimented you minutes before by saying you look fine, but then, someone approaches us, calls you Mr. Admin , tells us a huge deal, and you turn paler than you already are…"
Romeo’s lack of rambling (like he always did ages ago) encouraged Val to be pretty talkative, and offending him offered a lot of pleasure to her.

Romeo motioned his head back to Val, then to the wooden bowl. The pasta was already devoured by him, but Val still feasted on her mushroom stew.
"Maybe Xara isn’t that mad at you…"
He didn’t dare to look her straight in the eye.
"I hope so…"

The ice blue–eyed girl shrugged.
"That young lady wasn’t a shocker at all. If there hadn’t been anyone who we met in this town, I’d have complained to fate to throw someone in our way, since we’re bored. But, let’s look at the bright side, as Porkchop used to say! We know what this town is called!"

Val’s voice faded into the open fields, like she hadn’t spoken at all.

"Soup, Soup!!! Where are you?... We leave for some time, and she vanishes to thin air!"

They hadn’t split since they got trapped beneath the bedrock.

Romeo scanned the fields, frowning.
"Maybe she is in the town. We just haven’t run into her."
Val sighed.
"Yeah, that makes sense…"
"I can go and look for her," Romeo offered.
The afroamerican girl seemed to like that idea.
"Okay. You do that. I'm staying here. Brown stays with me though."
"Alright."

Val headed to walk around the town’s robustus walls, hoping she’d find her best friend. Brown trotted beside her, hooves clicking softly on the stone. Val pretended not to notice the llama repeatedly glancing toward the redhaired man walking away.

Chapter 12: Redstonia

Chapter Text

Redstonia was a bliss. Even if the sea surrounding her house bothered her with its pitchblack, bottomless nature, she was aiming to avoid it. With that, her time was unproblematic.
Except for some embarrassing scenes with townspeople and occasional flashbacks.
To think this through, this more than one week wasn't completely unproblematic. She got moderately sunburned while she worked on a contraption for a long time.
She hoped she wouldn’t feel pain again so early, but the Sun and her brain didn’t really care about that.
Not only did she restart her hobby, but she also improved her communication skills. Somewhat. Baby steps, baby steps.
Speaking with Olivia, she found out Jesse’s group was going by the name of The New Order of the Stone. She had missed a lot—and honestly, she didn’t feel like catching up.
The book she borrowed from Jesse kept her busy when she didn’t bury herself into redstone.
The house she set up right next to the centerpiece, the dome, wasn’t a building masterpiece. It consisted of sandstone and oak, since those materials didn’t take ages to collect. The more she put down blocks, the more she perceived how mediocre her builds are.

Right then, on this warm afternoon, she was working on the item sorter of Redstonia.
The newcomer bit off more than she could chew, and the current situation made that clear. Something wasn’t working, and the inventor was oblivious to it.
Naturally, asking for help wasn’t an option.
Three hours passed, and the sorter still didn’t work. Every sound the redstone made gave her the illusion she might fix the problem. Maybe she did, but then another appeared.

Olivia was on her trip around town, and she curiously walked up to her, not wearing her iconic green hat for once. Having already experienced this state in engineering numerous times, she spoke up.
"Hey, Xara! Want me to take a look?"
Xara growled more to herself, but Olivia could hear it as well.
"Just… leave me alone! I have to think… It’s not... I know what I’m doing."
Olivia stepped back moderately.
"Sure, I know. You’re a brilliant inventor! I just thought two heads are better than one."
"Oh, no. No. You DON’T know…"
Olivia’s eyes were filled with sympathy and some hurt as well.
When Xara peered at her, she was able to read her eyes. They were expressive. Guilt panged in her chest.
She covered her face. Overreacted—again. Why did she keep doing this?
She mumbled.
"I’m sorry."
Olivia kneeled down, getting at the same level as her.
"You’re right, Xara. I don’t know. But I’m trying, and that is what matters. Now, let’s fix it together. We will figure it out!"

After not too long, Olivia found the source of the problem: a redstone torch was missing.
"Let’s try it again!"

The mayor filled the chests with Xara’s random items that laid around. The invention functioned flawlessly.
"I knew you could do it, Xara!"
Xara brushed her fingers over a repeater, the red light illuminating her hand.
"You didn’t have to do that. Thank you."
Olivia felt the urge to hug her, but changed her mind. Maybe it’d do more harm than good.
"Only did what I had to."

At this point, Redstonia’s guest’s lips turned to a weak, yet noticeable smile.

Later that day, she was organising her chests with concentration. Her prison outfit was still laying at the bottom of the double chest she opened, covered with all her random items.
She pulled it out slowly. Burning it in lava seemed too extreme, it was high quality.
So instead, she left her shack and walked to the seaside. The bright celestial body already left the horizon, casting shades of orange, yellow, and purple over the blue sky.
With a forceful movement, she threw the jumpsuit at the sea.
The sound—a splash—blended with other sounds of nature.
First, it floated on the surface.
Then, it sank.

Not being safe around deep water (she was today years old when she found out it was called thalassophobia), she left the seaside.
Before she entered her small cabin, she had admired the view of the sky.
Sunset is not overrated. It’s realistically appreciated. Huge difference.

Chapter 13: Beacontown

Chapter Text

At least, Soup doesn’t loathe me that much.
Romeo was hoping he’d bump into Jesse, only to sign up for community service or ask for information about Xara. They were always in the center of events, so they must have any sort of information about Xara.
This world was enormous, and he was mortal.
The tension with his old townspeople was building — and it unsettled him. Brown, the llama, seemed to be too interested in him, and just as Val stated: he couldn’t take care of him. He was barely—just barely—taking care of himself, and Brown deserved attention from a put-together owner.
He was checking every corner. It wouldn’t be hard to notice Soup due to her particular appearance, but she was nowhere to be seen.
The chatty parrots flew in the sky, the diverse noises of people and occasional footsteps hit his ear, and splendid scents filled his nose. After more than a month at the Underneath, he still needed time to get used to these experiences.

He came across a group near the beacons. Brown, black, blond, colorful haired people, with different styles and body types were stalling, as something was about to happen or had already happened.
Then, as he scanned through the crowd, wishing to find Soup somewhere among, he spotted Jesse.
Perfect opportunity! It’s now or never, Romeo! Go for it!
Just like that, he started to sneak.
This was effective, for some time.
He fixed his eyes on Jesse, determined to catch them.
And then, accidentally, he bumped into a woman, who was holding 3 potion bottles.

 "Hey!"
What happened was average: the products of blood and sweat fell to the ground.
It splashed everywhere—to Romeo's trainers, his jeans, and even to the woman’s clothes. Not mentioning the people around, of course.

"Why can’t you watch your step, hm? I can't believe you’re rushing that much!"

Every look was on him. He used to love that. At that moment, his face was as scarlet as his hair.

"I’m terribly sorry, I… I am going to get you new ones, I promise!"
The woman was furious.
"Yeah, yeah, sure. And you think I’m naive, right?"
Next to the fiery lady stood her close friend, who wanted to end this scene.
"Mira, please. Let’s not humiliate each other!"

The woman named Mira offered something.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Here is the deal, you jerk. You come with me, right now, and you recollect the materials. Got it?"
This bossy tone reminded him of his old self.
Going with her naturally meant missing the opportunity to speak to Jesse. Not to mention Val might already be waiting for him.
He closed his eyes, and decided to stand up for himself. He was humbled by Jesse, but not a wreck they can walk over.

"I have tasks to attend to. I can’t go right now."
Mira ran her eyes over him, not even trying to hide her dislike.
Her friend, who seemed to be the rational, collected one, spoke up.
"Okay. Let’s do this later, right, Mira?"
The black-haired, hostile woman viewed the potions’ remains below her feet.

"Most materials are from the Nether. Will you be ready for that?"
Romeo narrowed his eyes confidently.
"Yes."

Mira elevated her fist.
"But if you dare, dare to run away from this…"
Her companion covered her fist with her palm.
"Mira, he won’t leave."

There was some silence. At least, between them. The people around still chatted.
Mira kicked a piece of glass away.
"Let’s go, Lydia."

As the duo walked away, all the sounds reached his ears again. The group of townspeople already scattered almost completely. The further the two women got, the less eyes he felt on his back.
And Jesse? They already disappeared in the Order Hall.

Chapter 14: Redstonia and Champion City

Chapter Text

She got in her cabin again. Today was just too much for her. The solid, smooth floor under her wasn’t enough to feel less drained. Not only physically, but mentally as well. She didn’t overwork herself, no. She was just not ready for this yet.

I need some time by myself again.

She went to her 2 double chests, and rummaged through them. She emptied both, only bringing the necessities. Building blocks, foods, basic redstone, weapons, and ores. She also grabbed Jesse’s book from her table.

She picked up her bed as well, and both paintings. One was on the wall, the other behind the double chest on the left. One of the double chests was removed as well.

The wood in her inventory served a purpose then: she crafted a sign. She wrote the following text on the oak rectangle:

Don’t steal anything. I’m watching you.

The dark–eyed woman stepped out the door. She settled the said sign down on the door, and nodded to herself.

She turned away from the little building, and took a large sigh.

Some people waved at her, as she walked to the bridge that stopped her the first time. She reluctantly gestured back, and her expression wasn’t ice cold, like it would be weeks ago.

She averted her eyes from the deep bodies of water below, as she was waiting for the machinery working its magic.

This time, she wasn’t as swift as the first time. It was quicker than her normal pace, but not running.

The inventor set foot in the portal again.

She almost fell asleep during the ride. Nothing attacked her.

When the sound of her arrival–a bump– jumped from wall to wall in Jesse’s room, she stumbled out of the cold, heavy minecart.

She was trying to be noiseless as she moved.

Just as she assumed, someone was there. Jesse, to be exact. They were sunk in one of the armchairs, and a book was on the floor, next to Jesse.

I feel you, Jesse. I truly do.

She took the item from the flooring and left it on the table standing close. Sense and Sensibility found its place above Jesse’s book.

The Sun wasn’t asleep yet when she roamed on the road all lit up by torches. Not much time and she came to the ruins. Quartz blocks, blue glass, and andesite could be seen as she approached the remains.

The demolition was significant, no buildings remained complete.

What the heck has happened to this city? I should have asked Jesse earlier…

The entrance was almost 100 percent ruined. The whole ex–megalopolis (was a disturbing sight for some reason. If Xara had been an easily–scared person, she would’ve already ran away. The shiny sword of hers was still equipped, her grasping it like someone with awareness.

She spotted a dark oak door, being surrounded with quartz blocks and light mango colored concrete powder. One lamp glowed right above, supposedly there had been another door as well during the city’s glorious days. 2 trees were still standing, and citizens seemed to like those with thin trunks.

The door enticed her, so she picked up her pace. She got into the main square, which wasn’t even a square. It was circular.

The structure wasn’t ruined, and the grass was just as green as ever.

Not living in the center for sure.

Yet, when she studied the tree that stood there on its own, almost like an outcast, she changed her mind.

The inner circle, the tiniest one, seemed flawless to inhabit.

Quartz pillars were built in the sides, and that meant she could secure her roof to those without problem. The water, supposedly serving decorative purposes around the two center circles, was shallow, so it was okay.

This is too good to be true.

However, this was true, happening to her there and then.

Her inventory was rather packed, so she decided to deal with that first.

The basics first. A crafting table, 2 furnaces, and the chests.

When the Sun disappeared from the sky and only the colors of sunset were left, Xara placed her bed right in the middle of the square. The tree was only blocks away, but that just made it cozier.

The minute she was about to drift off into a slumber, sounds of something hitting blocks could be heard.

She bounced out of the purple furniture and her bow was in her hand, ready to be used and cause serious damage.

 "Who’s there?!”

There was no need to be on edge.

A black dog sat quietly on the quartz ring. He didn’t move"just sat on the pale platform.

Xara furrowed her brows, narrowing her eyes.

 "Hello…What are you doing here?”

The dog was beautiful. Thick, black fur covered most of his body, except for the muzzle, eyes, and paws.

He began to jog slowly toward her.

Xara’s gaze stayed locked on the creature as the distance between them closed.

He wasn’t tamed. In fact, he looked shy — pausing halfway up the fancy stairs, like he was waiting for permission.

Xara lowered the wooden weapon onto the grass.

 "Hungry, huh? –she muttered.

She didn’t expect a reaction to that, obviously. Spinning toward her chests, she rummaged through them. Aside from fish, all she had were two pieces of cooked chicken.

 "Here.”

She tossed a piece towards him. The dog glanced between Xara and the food, hesitating.

 "Take it, it’s yours.”

After a few long moments, the dog took a bite from the meat. Then another. Three bites later, he devoured the chicken.

Following that he finished–much to Xara’s surprise–he hopped on her, knocking her to the grass.

Wet licks landed on her face. He smelled… surprisingly clean.

What astonished her was the fact that she didn’t push the dog away.

Once he settled down next to her, tongue lolling out, she sat up.

"You’re an amusing companion…What should I name you?”

She sat in thought for a moment before deciding.

 "Shady. Shady is good.”

It was really time to hit the hay now. Shady curled up beside the bed.

It didn’t take long for either of them to drift off.

Chapter 15: Champion City

Chapter Text

Val’s way led to the first building they laid their eyes on in this world. After looking around closely, she didn’t find any sign of her. Brown wasn’t much of a help, but he was loyal, sticking to her the whole time.

Her second idea was that the destroyed city lured Soup in, so she followed the road to the place. It wasn’t a long ride, but it dragged on like a horrible movie.

Brown trotted beside her, and Val occasionally glanced his way.

Why are you so fascinated by Romeo? I mean, he does have that effect on people, but I have never seen animals do that…

She adjusted her cool black gloves and stared up at the heights of the ex–metropolis. It had been an impressive place before, so she didn’t know what to expect about its current state.

It wasn’t hard to spot Soup. Her red t–shirt stuck out from the surroundings a lot. Next to her, there stood a redstone contraption, and someone was presumably working on it.

Val’s step faltered. She blinked several times.

That someone else had a bow on her back, a lean build, and eyes dark like netherite.

Oh no. Xara…

She crossed the plaza.

 "Soup!”

Her voice was filled with irritation and relief.

Soup grinned from ear to ear.

 "Val!”

Xara didn’t turn. She kept working.

Val embraced her tightly.

"Don’t do that again. It’s almost night time!”

"I’m sorry, I just had to come here! This former burg had this really creepy, yet majestic vibe to it, you know!”

When they released each other, Val’s eyes landed on Xara.

 "Hello, Xara.”

Her voice stayed neutral. Xara glanced at her.

 "Hello, Val.”

Val’s mouth twitched into a thin line. Xara surely had memories about her, since she was devoted to her townspeople back in the day. Her awful decision to leave the Oasis resulted in meeting Soup and learning how to fight professionally, so it had its pros.

"Do you guys know each other?”

Val replied awkwardly.

 "Yeah…”

Soup started to sense something was off.

Silence stretched for some time.

Brown’s huff and a dog's paws on the ground ended the silence.

The girls turned to the animals.

 "What the…?”

A coal colored dog with white spots barked at Brown, and the llama wasn’t afraid to attack. The llama did spit, and the dog growled loudly as a reaction.

Xara held up a bone.

 "Shady, catch!”

That worked. Xara’s pet had caught the flying bone, and he forgot about the newcomer in a second.

Soup chuckled.

 "What a feisty dog!

Val patted Brown’s neck.

"This guy is just as guilty as him. Too stubborn to ignore a competition.”

Soup stretched.

"Uhh… Yeah, this feels good…We should go back to Beacontown. The road is mobproof, so we won't get into sticky situations. We should at least say bye to Romeo.”

For a moment, the air froze. The dog’s chewing, Brown’s huffing, and tree leaves’ rustling provided sounds, but that didn’t help easing the tension.

 "What did you say?”

Val feared this would happen. Soup wasn’t familiar with the trio's drama, only that Romeo started acting savagely before he bedrocked over the world and left everyone behind.

"That we should head back to Beacontown.”

Xara growled.

 "After that.”

Val rested her hand on Soup’s shoulder.

 "Nothing important.”

Xara’s eyes were filled with anger and disappointment–but Val could see a hint of fear in them too.

 "He is alive…??!!”

Soup was then certain that she missed some context, so she decided to shut her chatty mouth this time.

Val’s eyes lingered on the now peaceful dog.

 "Yes…”

The redstone professional woman turned away from them.

Val side hugged Soup.

"Let’s go, Soup. We should let her be.”

The always cheerful friend of hers looked at Xara’s back, and then nodded. She wasn’t joyous at that moment, just confused and a bit sad.

 "Okay…”

Brown didn’t seem to enjoy it there, since the moment they started to move, he stood up right away.

Before they got moving, Val removed the red poppy from her inventory.

"I thought this flower’d look good in that pot of yours.”

Xara slightly–almost unnoticeably–turned her head back to Val above her shoulder.

 "I don’t like poppies.”

Val adjusted the flower in the clay decor as an answer.

Before they left the city, Soup turned her head back to Xara. She was occupied with her machine again, like nothing happened.

As Beacontown got closer and closer, the lost and found girl spoke up.

"You know I want to know what this was all about, right?”

Val eyes were darting between the mobs that weren’t too far away.

"Let’s hurry. Those aren’t in proximity, but that can change.”

So, the remaining blocks were made at a faster pace, and they did have to dodge some arrows on the way.

Chapter 16: Beacontown

Chapter Text

After Romeo roamed around Beacontown–checking every corner–he didn’t bump into Soup.

Before he would’ve returned to Val, he wanted to write a letter to Jesse about the community service.

But how was the paper crafted?

Miss Margaret couldn’t be seen in her garden anymore, and he had no idea who to interrogate.

Jesse’s friend, Lukas, is a writer. I’m not sure if he would help me though…Also, there is Stella. She was really collected last time…Maybe I should just head to the library? Uh… I have no idea!

At the moment, he was standing in the middle of Beacontown’s main street, hands on his hips. He needed to pull himself together. Only over a month had passed since he had realized the world didn’t revolve around him. That meant his decisions were not just about him, but also about others.

This is ridiculous, he muttered .

The library seemed like a neutral zone. No awkward exchanges unless necessary, and librarians would certainly help. He didn’t fancy books, but he still believed that librarians were underrated.

He started walking, the late afternoon sun casting rays across the road. The library–much to his surprise–was a brick building. The roof consisted of black terracotta, and the garden before the entrance contained decorated pots.

Interesting design choices .

His time in the Underneath had taught him that sometimes, people only go for practicality instead of architecture. Simply for the reason that they didn’t have infinite inventory.

Romeo stepped through the jungle wood doors.

The librarian had welcomed him, but he didn’t hear it, since it was so faint. He padded toward the counter.

"Good afternoon! May I ask for a paper and writing tools?”

The young lady seemed passionate, and strange visitors like himself could certainly give her job.

 "Sure!”

In a second, she handed him a piece of paper and a quill with some ink in a tiny glass.

 "Thank you!”

The dark gray–eyed, almost black–eyed man settled down on a jungle tree table nearby, and stared at the colorless paper.

Oh. Now, I actually have to formulate it.

This was a rough patch. Approximately a decade had passed since he wrote a letter.

Dear Jesse,

That wasn’t hard.

He didn’t have to struggle for a long time. The seat in front of him got occupied, and he recognised the female hands with green nails.

 "Do you need some help?”

As Romeo lifted his gaze, he met dark, distancing, yet dedicated eyes.

She’d already stacked her books on the table.

 "Yes… Please. Thank you…”

Stella lifted an eyebrow.

"Wow. What has gotten into you?”

Romeo awkwardly rubbed his neck.

"I'm trying to be… normal again.”

Stella moved a bit in the chair.

 "Right…”

Some silence followed their short conversation, and Stella intrigued in a hushed voice.

"So… Who is this for? Xara? Jesse? It can be literally anyone, why do I keep asking…”

Romeo flipped the quill, fidgeting with it.

"I’m here to sign up for community service…”

The llama owner folded her arms.

"I’m going to help, but in one condition.”

Romeo braced himself.

 "What?”

"You help me with building a llama house.”

Romeo, hearing the words llama and building, immediately answered.

 "Sure.”

Stella’s face was still stoic.

 "Perfect…Let’s jump into it, then!”

Their whispers were the only things the librarian and the occasional visitors could hear for about an hour.

"More confidence! Convince Jesse that it’s the best idea ever to start this program!”

"How can I convince them if I’m not certain myself?”

"No, no. Don’t inform them about everything! They don’t have time and care for that.”

 "Okay…”

"What do you mean you messed up? ? They already know that…”

 "But I mean it…”

 "It’s time to sign it!”

Romeo had signed the letter, and leaned back in the jungle plank chair.

 "Romeo, huh?”

The ex–tyrant blinked at her.

"You have never revealed your given name, you know…”

Romeo was ashamed. He really didn’t.

 "I…”

"It’s fine. I found it out eventually.”

Romeo appreciated her understanding more than she could imagine. They both were on the path of redeeming themselves, so she probably experienced similar, a bit awkward conversations.

As Jesse’s former nemeses stood up, Romeo offered something.

"Let me help with the books!”

Stella really wanted to say no. Really. But the books were heavy, and she always accepted genuine offers.

"I would appreciate that. Thank you.”

The weary guy picked them up, and before they exited, she handed 7 iron nuggets to the librarian lady.

 "For the writing tools.”

The brown–haired lady replied.

"It is a free service, but the library always takes donations!”

Romeo smiled weakly, and they said goodbye to the librarian. Stella held the doors for him, and they stepped out.

 "Show me the way!”

When the two duo arrived at Stella’s humble apartment, Romeo bit his lip.

It was nasty. The colors were classy (dark oak and regular oak), but the structure…

"I know what you think. Not an icy palace, I will give you that…But it’s better than a dirt hut!”

Stella had taste for lights: lanterns were organised on the grass in her front garden. The sky was already dark, it could be around 8 pm.

Stella was then standing in front of her single oak door, opening it.

“Place the books on the table in the centre.”

Romeo did as he was told. Stella’s living room was organised and it truly seemed like a home with all the personal items.

Next to the couch laid Lluna, having 2 pieces of wheat as lunch.

 "Hi Lluna!”

The smug teen llama raised her head from the yummy food, and she tilted her head.

"I suppose she isn’t sure who you are…”

Romeo fidgeted with his fingers.

 "I’m looking quite different, yeah…”

Stella removed the letter they worded from the top of the book pile.

"I’m delivering this to Jesse in return, don’t worry about it.

Romeo was feeling really content. This was all going really well. Yet.

 "Okay. Thanks.”

The redeeming guy opened the front door. Before stepping out, he turned his head back to Stella.

 "Good night, Stella! And…I’m sorry.”

"I know. Good luck with Xara though. I wouldn’t blame her if she couldn’t forgive you.”

Romeo knew that. He did need a lot of luck–not just about Xara. Basically, he needed it for everything.

Chapter 17: Beacontown

Chapter Text

The Moon was full, and tons of stars accompanied it in the sky, making sure it didn’t feel alone. Or–that is also possible–they were fans.

Romeo wandered around the town, hoping to run into his townspeople. The streets were empty, except for some people. The parrots settled down, the wind didn’t blow, and the temperature dropped somewhat.

When he was at the gate, he felt like he’d pass out any moment. This day was too eventful.

He didn’t even register Soup and Val stepping to him with Brown.

 “Lucky you’re here… I’m not in a mood to search for anyone now… “ – welcomed Val.

“Guys, hold on. Let me get this right…Are we going to sleep on the streets?”

Val looked through her inventory for building blocks.

“Well, that is only happening if we must…”

Romeo had a hard time processing what just had been said.

Soup mumbled to Val.

 “When should we tell ’im?”

 “After he rests a bit…”

The duo was as tired as a worn out shoe as well.

 “Let’s search for a place to stay…”

So here they were again.

When the team got to the suburbs, Soup and Val kept an eye out for a guest quarter or just an inn with plenty of space.

Redstone lamps were missing–torch lamps took their place instead.

Behind the cat statues stood an unfinished, abandoned house. They were confused how there wasn’t a single mob there, since it was really poorly lit. The walls had been built out of stone and its variants, and the floor was made out of spruce planks. The spruce oak roof was half finished, so they could get below if a rain started.

“Let’s light it and it will be bearable.”

Having said that, Val set down 4 torches.

After the girls set down their beds and Romeo laid down on the ground–recreating yesterday’s scenario–Val spoke up.

“You shouldn’t be sleeping on the ground…”

From the other bed, an agreeing humming could be heard.

Brown–seemingly understanding the assignment–laid on his side. This wasn’t his thing. Despite that, he did it.

 “Can I…?”

Brown didn’t react in any particular way, so Romeo played his head on the llama fur.

When he finished shifting, Brown brought his head closer to him.

 “G’night.”

The girls didn’t answer, sleeping like a dog already.

Despite being exhausted, Romeo still needed some time to drift off.

Tears rolled down on his cheeks before he did so.

Chapter 18: Champion City and Beacontown

Chapter Text

This hadn’t happened to her before. She had never had problems with sleeping before she became an Admin. As an Admin, she dropped this activity, but rarely, she did sleep, just for fun.

The redstone contraption she finished today–a food dispenser and sorter–was worth her time. She could just push a button and the wanted item dropped.

Then, she was tossing and turning in her bright purple bed.

Why the frick can’t I sleep??

It wasn’t hard to guess.

Shady was snoring close, providing some background noise.

At least I'm not left alone with my thoughts.

She got up from the bed to stretch. Maybe that would help.

When she did so, a flashback disturbed her again.

Fred on the floor…

Romeo’s eyes, filled with anger and guilt…

Her own feelings…shock, fury, pride…

She sat down, and took deep, long breaths. This worked most of the time, as she had experienced.

He is probably in Beacontown.

She didn’t want to meet him.

Hunger gripped her stomach, so she wasn’t hesitating to walk to her sorter and push a button. She decided to eat cooked potato and pumpkin pie, the latter being her favorite.

Soup was so helpful…If they are pampering Romeo, then he isn’t living the life he should be living!!

The less pale woman (since the sunburn) wasn’t mad at Soup. That girl just wasn’t included in their petty dramas and was open, that’s all. Her behaviour was a sign of friendliness and trust.

Despite everything, the fire that had started years ago couldn’t be stopped, that she knew.

After she was satisfied, she tucked herself in again. A pyjama was missing, but the heard information scared her away from Beacontown even more.

Time passed, and sleep wouldn’t come to her. A new idea was to tire herself out.

Let’s run to Beacontown and back!

This spontaneous request , even though it scared her, started becoming real as she left the outskirts of the city.

After two leaps, she found herself rushing towards the beacons–and everything else over there. Her heart was racing like a train, and her hair was flying, just like her scarf. The sound of feet hitting the andesite was booming, and she liked that. The adrenaline felt so good that she almost didn’t notice the entrance in front of her.

She stopped, not triggering the machine.

With a turn, she sprinted back.

The outside area wasn’t lit enough to see that a witch was lurking in the dark around the ruins–hiding behind a block.

A potion flew, and in a second, all the energy left her limbs.

She still had some stamina to strike one with her diamond sword, and Shady ran, killing the witch with outrage.

Seconds passed, and the world went dark for Xara.

When the ex–Admin opened her eyes, the Sun was about to reach the top of the sky. First, she didn’t register anything. It was midday, and she was at her base. Nothing else.

Slowly, she started to feel the softness below her. As she lifted her head, she noticed she was laying on her bed.

What the fudge?? I don’t remember stumbling back… Someone was here!

The wind didn’t blow, and Shady wasn’t around to provide background noise. He probably decided to hunt some animals or meet with other wolves in the nearby forest.

Seconds passed, but nothing reached her ears. The person who helped her out probably left some time ago.

Xara took a large breath, and blew it out.

After stretching, she walked to the poppy Val had given her before. Her favourite flower was the azure bluet, but she didn’t hate poppies.

Although, right then, she did. It reminded her of him .

When she returned to her chests, she found that there were 0 redstones left. After carefully looking through both, it was as clear as day that she ran out.

This meant one thing: she had to return to Beacontown to mine.

I’m not going back. Not risking running into him.

She didn’t want yesterday’s accident to happen again. So, she wandered around the ruined city, putting torches where there were none.

She was doing well, until there was no torch left.

Ahh!!!

Irritated, she walked back to her base, and got ready to leave.

She tried to look on the bright side as the well-known entrance to Beacontown stood before her. She didn’t have to dig a mine herself, so she should be grateful for that.

When the newcomer entered the mine, calmness washed over her.

Monsters didn't scare her, but people…

Leaving the miners behind, the engineer went as deep as she could in the mines. On the way, some spiders tried to stop her, but she just shoved them into the lava with impressive moves.

The oak stairs leading down were a bit rusty, but they did their job.

Down there the mine’s ceiling height was overwhelming. Some lapis, gold, and redstone were scattered, wrapped in stone.

Her iron pickaxe was working, clicking echoing in the openness.

What a large vein!! Perfect!

The open area had even more redstone and some iron. The latter she also needed for payment, so she slipped it in her inventory.

A zombie’s growl could be heard, and her diamond blade enthusiastically got rid of it.

The mine was a bit of a labyrinth. Torches were getting scarce, but she knew there was more of the red dust, so it was worth it. Moreover, if she found some diamonds, she could upgrade her pickaxe that was close to breaking.

When she chose a direction to walk to, she heard someone mining not too far. She didn’t care about them, but was alert, in case something happened.

Redstone lit on the tunnel’s wall, and she collected it.

The following moment, a spider wanted to kill her, as she heard the disgusting sound of spider legs behind her.

When she turned around to get rid of it, the string was already there. The other person in that cave faced her.

 "Oh…Hi…”

She almost dropped her pickaxe. Well–known, deep, raspy voice. She scanned the man. Hair below ears, the goatee, the fringe… All matched. Except for the eyes. His iris was dark, the white surrounding it–like they should be, since he was…normal.

Xara meets Romeo at the caves

She straightened and took a step back. Slowly, she pulled her bow, filling it with ammo.

 "Hi, Romeo …”

Chapter 19: Mines

Chapter Text

Romeo wasn't prepared to meet her here. Though, it was completely logical that she was here, since she needed to mine somewhere. Still, other places would’ve been better for the first encounter, but that's how it was.

When people haven’t spoken in a long time, they usually make positive comments on each other’s appearance once they finally meet. Romeo decided to skip that step, since he didn’t want to die immediately.

Also, he tried to ignore the light playing on the arrow.

"Um…How do you manage in this world?”

Xara was taken aback a bit by that question, just like Romeo had hoped. She frowned, and answered;

 "It doesn’t matter, Romeo.”

She adjusted her palm on the weapon, and pulled the string further.

"You have 3 seconds to get out of my sight. I’m counting.”

As Romeo looked into her eyes, he knew she was serious. What they presented was coldness, sorrow, pride, anger and…relief??

He couldn’t study her eyes more, since Xara closed them.

 "3…”

And with the counting starting, Romeo jogged. A creeper welcomed him from the left, and he jumped, finishing the movement with a stunt.

When he reached the stairs, he didn't slow down.

Bats screeched, his feet hit the ground, and a skeleton shot confidently.

After some time, he was standing outside, bathing in the Sun.

At that moment, his main objectives were to fix the potion problem, to rebuild the halfhouse in the outskirts, and to be patient. The hardest one on the list.

Without further ado, he got to work.

 “2…”

Xara heard the familiar sound of feet hitting stone and occasional wood.

 “1.”

She dropped the bow low. The only torch in the area cracked, and some steps still echoed.

Smart choice.

She kept walking in the seemingly endless tunnel, but she didn’t find diamonds or more redstone.

She collected the materials to craft a new iron pick, so she could continue her search in the deeper holes.

Her mining session lasted till late afternoon. Her inventory was packed with materials as she walked back to her base.

5 diamonds is not bad at all…

Shady ran like he was being chased to welcome her.

 “How was your day, Shay?”

The emotional dog had kept his paws on Xara’s leg, and she knelt down to pet him.

“Are you starving? Because I am…”

Shady jogged to his dog house made out of stone. Xara had straightened and walked to her double chests. Carefully, she got rid of all her found items. After that, she had used her redstone contraption again, and pushed the cookie button this time, repeating it 2 more times. While they dropped, she removed fish from her double chest.

I need to get more animals ASAP. I’m running out of food for him…

She was glad about doing something. At least, she’d be occupied, and she wouldn't have to think about today’s encounter.

 “Here you go, little guy.”

Shady didn’t wait too long, and the fish started to get eaten.

As the Sun was setting again, she examined her base proudly. A tiny house supported by the quartz pillars, a quartz gazebo for future enchanting, a stone house for Shady, a food sorter, a campfire surrounded by chairs, a cow enclosure (with only one cow), more trees, a table with chairs around (the red poppy in the pot), an archery corner, a circular farm with wheat for more animals in the future… She still wasn’t out of ideas. There was always room for improvement, that she knew.

When she finished her 3 cookies, she stood up from the chair situated next to the doghouse.

Her way led to the campfire area, and she made some fire.

Sitting there, near the flames, she was in a mood to read. Problem was: there were no books.

“I have to go to the library, right?… Ugh!!” – she growled to herself.

The fire still crackled for a couple of minutes, and she drifted into sleep in the chair.

The trip to the Nether wasn’t a piece of cake, as he imagined. Nether wart, blaze rod, ghast tear, and magma cream were on his list, and Mira did mind the time loss, since she asked for multiple of these items.

Through his trip, he nearly fell into lava twice, and a wither skeleton cut his jeans. There was no way he could still wear it, it was stitched at a lot of places before it was cut again.

The Moon was responsible for the glow when he set foot in the much peaceful dimension again. It had to be an ungodly hour, about 3:00 AM, since the streets of Beacontown were empty.

The silence… refreshing for once. A month ago, he’d make some unnecessary voice, just to get rid of silence. Right then, he was walking back to the ruins.

He was torn about Soup and Val leaving the town. On one hand, he was happy for them. They had been pretty motivated to adventure, and Romeo assumed they didn’t want to get involved in his relationship with Xara. On the other hand, he was left alone. Again.

The ruins of the house were blank canvases for him that were waiting for the blocks he’d place. However, it was late, and he was fatigued. And hungry.

He removed the purple wool block from his inventory, and laid down on the floor. Not much time had passed, and he cried himself to sleep, while he hugged the soft block tightly.

Chapter 20: Beacontown and Champion City

Chapter Text

His back hurt like hell. He knew this wasn’t going to cut it, even if he felt like he deserved to sleep like that.

When he stood up and stretched a bit, he realised that there were a lot of things on his plate today, and that he had only slept about 4 hours.

The list was the following: he needed to get some sheep, breed them, and then shear them (even if he had no idea how it was done), cut trees, build, hand Mira the items, and–if he had an opportunity–speak with Jesse about his community service hours.

The growl of his stomach made him add eating to the list.

He got on his way to the restaurant, iron ores in his pockets. He didn't mind the cut on his jeans, worse had happened before.

Mush was filled with Beacontowners. 13 was playing from the jukebox, and the cheater filled the room. Glazed terracotta was blended with regular terracotta on the walls, and tulips decorated the shelves.

“Good morning, I’d like 2 steaks!”

The girl rudely handed him the wanted items, and took the 6 iron nuggets.

As Romeo was about to leave, someone grabbed his arm and pulled it.

He found himself sitting on a pale oak chair.

 “What happened to your jeans??”

As he turned his head to the right, he faced the person who wanted to talk to him.

“I made a trip to the Nether, and, well… A wither skeleton wanted to end me.”

Stella shook her head disapprovingly.

Romeo took a bite of his steak, getting ready to listen to Stella.

 “You remember our deal, right?”

Romeo sighed.

“I almost forgot. I have a lot of things to do.”

Stella tapped on the table, waiting for Romeo. She let him eat peacefully.

“I was thinking about a spruce design.”

Romeo swallowed and commented.

“The nearest spruce biome is in about 1.000 blocks.”

Stella placed a hand under her chin.

“That’s too far away… How about a simple oak design? Can you spice it up somehow?”

Romeo’s eyes sparkled.

 “Sure.”

“Just make sure she fits in comfortably. She likes to sit on every block, except for obsidian, but you wouldn’t use that, would you?”

Romeo shook his head, chewing.

“About the letter… I handed it to Jesse, but they didn’t read it yet. How would I know, you may ask… It’s simple: they’re burned out and have too many things to do. I can see it on them. No one can fool me.”

Romeo had already finished half of his second steak.

“I suppose you don’t have time today, do you?”

Romeo rubbed his neck.

 “Well, not really.”

Stella waved dismissively.

 “Doesn’t matter. I can wait.”

Romeo finished his breakfast, and leaned back in the chair, satisfied.

Stella stood up.

“Alright. I need to go now. See you later.”

That being said, Stella walked to the door.

Romeo said goodbye, and prepared himself for all his tasks for today.

She wasn’t hungry when she opened her eyes, being welcomed by a dark midday. The clouds were gray, showing there might be some rain later. This sight made her rather quick in her movements, since she didn’t want to search for animals in pouring rain.

When the inventory check was finished, she left the city.

In the woods nearby roamed around 1 or 2 chickens, but she was specifically looking for cows. Their meat is satisfactory and the milk they produce is delicious. Nonetheless, she could make a cake with it.

Just for safety, she carried her diamond sword. Her right hand held wheat to attract the animals.

About an hour had passed, and she found a meadow with not less than 3 cows.

Here you are, you mischievous animals! I’m not gonna come back for more of you, that I’m certain.

As she held up her wheat as she approached the animals, and all of them perked up at the scent.

 “Yummy wheat, just for you!”

Just as it should be, she got followed. She made sure to hold it firmly, and slowed down when a tree blocked their way.

About halfway, the rainfall started.

 “No…”

The trees protected her mostly, but this wasn’t preferable. She just wanted to get back to her comfort zone and get the animals in their pen so she could breed them.

Things just got worse. Not too far away stood someone she wanted to avoid at all cost, leading 2 sheep with leaders.

What is he doing here? Is he following me? What about… I'm going to scare him…

She hid behind a thick tree, and peaked out.

After seconds, she spotted the llama. It was the brown, adult llama that Val had brought to her base, and the animal was probably the reason why he didn’t move anywhere.

She wasn’t given much time to think, since the little group continued to walk.

So, she followed, 25 blocks between her and them.

When the forest ended, presenting the field between Champion City and Beacontown, he and the companions stopped. She stepped behind a tree again. The engineer knew they had stopped due to the precipitation, as he probably didn’t want to get soaked.

Her hair and clothes already got damp, even if the trees blocked at least half of the pour.

She was too excited about her plan to care about such details.

The cows turned away from her as she moved the arrow to the bow.

The string stretched, and she kept an eye on the target. Her arms trembled slightly, but only an outsider would spot it, not her.

When she released it, the ammo hit just to where she wanted.

Romeo had reflexes similar to hers. He turned his head to the direction of the sound, and inspected the arrow in the tree. He scanned the area in a matter of seconds, and stretched his arm out in front of the animals protectively. The creatures didn’t seem to get bothered by the arrow though.

Xara didn’t see all that, of course, since she was pressing herself to the back of the trunk, frozen.

“Someone is here. Wait a minute.”

He handed the leads to the llama, who held it in his mouth.

At the same time, the thought this wasn’t such a great idea crossed Xara’s mind, but it left just as fast as it came.

The rain’s sound was frustrating in that situation. Normally, she enjoyed it. She switched her bow to her diamond sword.

Romeo got closer and closer, she could hear his steps in the grass.

 “I don’t want to fight.”

Oh, so he doesn’t want to solve things with pure anger and stupid, almost unmanageable challenges anymore! What beautiful character development!

It was obvious that the arrow was shot by a human, not a mob. Skeletons would keep attacking him till he died.

The cows already moved away from Xara, one walking out to the field, the other two staying in the cover of the trees.

When Romeo reached the tree, Xara was already crossing her arms, leaning to the tree, legs crossed. She was trying to appear confident, even if this little action’s consequences scared her first.

He really didn’t react how I was anticipating it. I can’t let my guard down though. I won't be fooled again by anyone. Especially not by him.

Chapter Text

Romeo expected and not expected her at the same time. Who else would try to scare him like that? Maybe Fred’s people, but he had only seen 2 of them in town yet, and they only sent him glares, never actually threatening him.

Having said that, this meeting was unexpected due to the weather and that they have already seen each other yesterday.

Without saying anything, he walked to the dangerous object and removed it from the bark.

When he returned, Xara seemed to lighten up a bit, since she was pretty tense.

 "Here.”

His old friend took the arrow and slipped it in her inventory.

Taking out the wheat, she motivated the cows to be around her again. Meanwhile, Romeo strolled back to his animals, and grabbed the leads.

"We will get drenched if we step out, right?”

Romeo stared at the sky that was hardly seen through the leaves.

 "Certainly.”

Xara seemed to think for a moment, and spoke up.

 "Maybe I should try that."

Romeo raised his eyebrows in surprise. He remembered Xara not having any particular problem with the rain, but he wasn’t sure if she liked it or not.

He noticed how Xara glanced at the cut on his jeans.

 "I was in the Nether."

Xara narrowed her eyes.

 “I see…”

Brown seemed to enjoy the turn of events, as he sniffed Romeo’s arm, asking for pets.

 “Wasn’t this the girls’ llama?”

He raised his hand to stroke Brown's neck, but then lowered it again.

“He was…but he wandered off. We met at the edge of the woods.”

The mentioned animal raised his head, and faced him.

And, well, he spit.

Romeo’s already wet face got covered with llama saliva.

He slowly wiped away the liquid.

Xara almost cracked a smile. She reached out to caress him.

“And what was that for, big guy?”

Romeo smiled weakly and answered her question.

“He’s a strange llama.”

Brown leaned into Xara’s touch, moving closer to her.

Romeo let out a faint smile. Looking at the llama and the woman, he noticed how gentle and caring she was with Brown. He assumed it was because the animal had spat on him.

“Did you run out of meat too?”

Xara didn’t look in the eye, just stared at his sneaker.

“I wanted to get more cows. Currently, I only have one.”

Some silence followed, and Xara spoke up.

“It’s time for me to go. I spent a bit too much time here already… But first…”

So, before Romeo could react, Xara slapped him really hard.

“That’s the least you deserve from me.”

Without waiting for the answer, she jogged out into the rain, the animals following in her wake.

Romeo shouted after her as the first raindrops seemed to hit her.

 “Hey, Xara! Wait!”

But she couldn't hear it over the sound of the heavy raindrops. She seemed to be…over it all.

La fine ?
