Chapter Text
Tony Stark was a cat.
Tony Stark was a cat in Central Park at 5pm on a Tuesday, which was not to say that that was normal.
Far from it, more like.
Some kind of witch – ‘Give my best to Loki, dear’ – had shown up and zapped him, and where was his stuff? His phone, his clothes, the arc reactor for the love of–
On the plus side, he’d already made a scraggly sidekick. And it had only been ten minutes, tops.
Tony Stark, charismatic cat.
For fuck’s sake.
He put his paw on the shoulder trying to nudge up to him, and pushed. The dusty kitten made a dejected squeak of a noise, and Tony felt so bad that he just gave up.
He let it scoot close to him, willing himself to stay still as it huddled at his side. Cowering and docile, looking like an emaciated wisp of fur. His heart gave a pang, and he was leaning down, wanting to soothe the poor thing and lick the dirt away–
Ew. What. Disgusting.
He resolutely turned his head away, and looked out at the park.
One hour. Maybe two. Then he’d be sure JARVIS hadn’t sent someone out for him, and make the journey back himself.
He settled in for a wait.
Joggers, squirrels. One nasty kid dropping his ice cream and trying to eat it off the ground.
Then a bird landed in a tree and turned into Loki.
Alright. Not the strangest thing that had happened today.
He watched as Loki jumped down and looked around; warmth rising in his chest at the faint worry lining his features.
“No sign of him,” Loki said to likely JARVIS, and Tony started on his way over before he could take the search elsewhere. A distressed mewl rang out behind, followed by the kitty scrambling after him.
Feeling worse about that than he really should, Tony stopped and meowed loudly.
Loki glanced at him absently, then did a double take. Brows furrowing, he strode over and crouched. Silence. Then: “...Tony?”
Hell yeah.
Smugly satisfied that he had been recognized so easily, he puffed out his chest and nodded.
Loki smiled. Tony wanted to take his hand and rub his scent all over it. (What?)
After a few moments of magic scrutiny, Loki sighed, “Amora,” sounding both relieved and annoyed. He looked at the kitten that had made its way to Tony’s side again. “And who is this?” he asked, amused.
Tony shrugged.
Eyes back on Tony, Loki stretched out his hand.
The kitten jumped in front of him, hissing. Defending him? Aww.
Loki smiled down at it gently, calling out, “Peace, little one.” There was something so soft about the way he was looking at it that Tony wanted to paw smack it into the ground. Which. Maybe a little irrational.
He towed the kitty back gently, then gave it a few pats. There, there. No enemies here.
Loki chuckled prettily. “Let’s get you home then, shall we?”
Notes:
Kitty: jumps in front of Tony to defend him against a giant
Loki: Oh, I like you
(Loki: and also you’re adorable)
(Loki: alright. you're adopted)Fun fact: the reason why Loki recognized Tony is his fur. Tony is an orange cat (what else could he be – orange cat Tony Stark is canon, don’t @ me xD) and the fur on his chest has a lighter arc reactor pattern haha
Chapter Text
“Why are you so cute, hm? It’s annoying,” Tony cooed at the cat, and Loki bit down on a smile.
They had taken the little thing with them, and after a wrinkle of an argument that had mostly consisted of Tony proclaiming he'd be ‘a shit father to anyone, including pets, so I’m not taking care of him, you are,’ Loki had assented and Tony had promptly commenced absolutely spoiling his new charge – Merlin, as he had named him.
Merlin, it seemed, had completely imprinted on the mortal genius – cat or no. Anywhere Tony went, he tried to follow, and if he couldn’t, he’d be near inconsolable.
As pitiful as it was, Loki couldn’t help but find it a little funny:
Tony ‘I’m not taking care of him, you are’ Stark had taken to wearing special garments that allowed Merlin to be swaddled against his chest. It made for a painfully endearing picture.
Just then, he put down his screwdriver to take Merlin’s head between his palms. Squeezing and wiggling softly as he murmured, “Yes, you are. An annoyingly cute, itty bitty kitty.”
Loki turned his head to hide his grin, insides melting. Norns, they were adorable.
A little meow rang out, followed by a fond chuckle. The sound was so light and contented that Loki almost felt grateful to Amora for it.
This might even make up for whatever else she had planned. Of course, it could’ve been a singular trick, a one-time occurrence – but what were the odds of that?
Paltry. Paltry, was what they were.
Amora – who hadn’t always gone by that name – prided herself in meddling in mortals’ affairs. Particularly in one specific respect.
Loki still wasn’t sure how – or what – he should tell Tony.
‘Fancy receiving a matchmaking? Anyhow, it seems you just might.’
He grimaced a little, torn between embarrassment and – well. He vaguely felt the intended partner for this particular escapade was to be him, and he really wasn’t sure whether that made it better or worse.
The idea was – considerable (quite, he thought, warmth sparking in his chest), but he couldn’t say he appreciated Amora's ways.
He was startled out of his thoughts by Jarvis: “I believe it is time for Merlin's dinner.”
Amused and anticipant, Loki stood and went over to fetch the kitten. He lifted him out from the garment, preempting his struggle with an All-Speak aided mention of food. Still, Merlin meowed sadly and reached soft paws out to Tony, to visible effect: Tony stared back, clearly conflicted.
Loki could barely contain his amusement as he asked, “Would you like to join us? I’m sure Merlin would appreciate your company. Isn’t that right, little one?”
Merlin meowed pitifully. Wonderful little cat, he was.
It took Tony barely a second to relent, and soon they left the workshop together. Loki softly stroked over Merlin’s head before handing him back over, an ache in his chest as he wondered whether Tony would have answered the same had he asked for himself.
Notes:
Merlin: gets Tony to eat more often
JARVIS: Oh dear, oh dear. Gorgeous.
Loki: really just a fan of this whole situationFun fact: Loki wards the general area in front of Tony's chest when he’s working with Merlin in the swaddle thingy. It's temperature, force and noise protected and neither of them talk about it but they’re both very glad Loki is able to do that

17. 17 times today, he’d fallen into–
The elevator doors opened, and he promptly tripped into Loki.
Make that 18, then.
Steady hands wrapped around his waist, and a velvety voice flowed right into his ear: “Jarvis mentioned you required my assistance?” Tony's scalp shivered pleasantly.
A meow, and that same voice continued, “Apologies. I unraveled the spell.” Already? It had been like two seconds.
Secretly glad that it had actually been a spell and not him suddenly sucking ass at bipedalism, he pushed away from Loki. “What are you apologizing for?”
Lips flat like a line, Loki gazed at him silently.
Merlin took the opportunity to jump from his shoulder into Tony’s arms, burrowing close to his chest. Tony smiled. Attention diverted to the furball sticking to him, he raised a hand and gently scritched the little guy’s scruff.
“I had hoped Amora was finished after that first incident. But it seems she rather isn’t, and I have been remiss in not informing you of the possibility. For the near future... it might be best if you came to me before seeing to tasks outside. I will ward you sufficiently, which should keep you free from nearly all magics.”
Tony blinked. Alright, that was... not good, but good to know.
Also: magic immunity??
“I didn’t know you could do that.” Sure would’ve been nice in any of the – few but very annoying – wizard fights they’d had.
“It is rather... intensive in cost. It will last a day and a half at most, and even less when in use.” Loki didn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about it.
A twinge in his gut, Tony said, “I’m good, actually. But thanks. It’s been pretty harmless this far, and I’d rather not suck you dry–” uhm– “just to prevent a few stupid pranks.”
“No, I–” Loki swayed closer, or maybe Tony had imagined that. “I insist.” He stared into Tony's eyes, far more seriously than the situation warranted. Or at least Tony thought so anyway.
Heart swelling at the obvious care, Tony smiled. “Alright, then. Thanks.”
Loki smiled back, and it was kind of a bit much.
Tony was both relieved and disappointed (weird, but whatever) when Loki lowered his gaze to Merlin, who had turned a bit to peek back at him. His whole face softened, subtle but more than obvious, and Tony’s grip tightened unconsciously.
God, he still didn’t know how to deal with it.
For close to a year, Loki’s friendly faces had been his – mostly, anyway.
His impish gaze full of humour, his startlingly joyful, giddy laugh.
His genuine, warm smiles, no matter how small.
His.
Not anymore.
Or – yes. But. There were new ones now, and those weren’t his.
Loki ducked his head a bit. “There he is. In high spirits once again, I see.” Amused. Fond.
Merlin meowed, and tilted into Loki’s fingers scratching at his chin and cheeks.
Tony couldn’t breathe.
No.
This was totally fine.
Totally... absolutely fine.
What was even his deal.
It was fine.
Notes:
Tony: internal uncomprehending screaming
Tony: I am totally. completely fine
Tony: pats Merlin gently
Tony: yes. absolutely. fineFun fact: the other Avengers don’t (permanently) live in the tower like Loki does, so Tony and Loki spend the most time together out of anyone. And it shows. They’re good friends, often found hanging around each other because it's comfortable, and that's just what they do. Have done, for some time now; and that's only increased since Merlin joined them

“...Loki.”
A touch on his shoulder. Shaking him.
“Loki, there's only one bed.”
Brows furrowing at the dim light, he managed a sound like ‘What?’
“There’s only one bed, Loki.”
He squinted his eyes open, thoughts hazy and slow. Tony was staring down at him.
“...what are you talking about?”
“Every bed in the penthouse and on the guest floor is a soggy wet mess, Loki. I can’t sleep there. Fucking magic. ...Loki.”
Understanding dawned in the fog of his mind, joined by irritation. Amora. “Alright, you can stop saying my name now. I’ll handle it,” he said, and stayed just as he was.
Only... a few seconds more.
“Loki.”
His eyes snapped open. Oh, Norns. Right. Right.
A tired hand passing over his face, he made to sit up, but the hand on his shoulder kept him. Confused, he peered up at Tony.
“I wanna sleep with you.”
Just like that, he was fully awake.
Wide-eyed, he took in Tony’s mildly rumpled self: he was visibly inebriated, suit and hair no longer pristine. The charity auction must’ve been surprisingly entertaining, for him to have stayed this long.
Disappointingly, there was nothing in his manner that suggested a... suggestion.
Loki stifled a sigh. He closed his eyes, promising himself he’d deal with this. Just. In a moment.
“Can I?” Tony asked. His hand left Loki’s shoulder to paw at the blanket, producing small sounds as his nails slid over it.
Amused despite himself, Loki opened his eyes to find Tony’s big and pleading.
Alright. Fine, then.
He sighed his agreement and wiggled to make room. Turning his head to make sure he wasn’t disturbing Merlin – where was Merlin?
The pillow to his left was empty. That was... not exactly worrying, but. He squinted at the spot in confusion.
A meow sounded behind him. He turned his head in Tony's direction, resolutely not looking at the active disrobing taking place.
Merlin sat gazing at him, following with another meow. As if assuring him, almost.
Loki chuckled, and stretched out his arm for a gentle caress. Smiling sleepily as he said, “Did you read my mind, little one? What a considerate cat, you are.” Merlin purred and leaned into his touch, and Loki sighed contentedly, then took his hand back.
Only a few moments later, Tony had finished losing nearly all of his clothes (Loki might've been looking a little bit) and scooped up Merlin. He lifted the blanket and laid on his side facing Loki, putting Merlin down to curl on a pillow between them.
Loki swallowed, staring up at the ceiling.
Again, Tony’s hand found him – but without a barrier this time. Roughened fingers curled around his upper arm; just… resting.
It was warm.
....good.
......lovely.
And yet somehow, not nearly enough.
“Good night, Loki,” came a whisper. It was so soft that Loki almost thought…
Heart aching, he willed his voice steady. “Good night, Tony. ...sleep well.”
A mellow hum gentled him, and finally he sank back into slumber.
Notes:
Tony, at the beds: what the fu–
Tony: doesn’t even check all of them
Tony: thank you for this opportunity
(Tony: and anyway, why should they get to sleep together and I don’t. just because I don’t sleep. that's sleep discrimination)Fun fact: Merlin’s separation anxiety has been improving quite a bit. It also helps that even if Tony isn’t there, Loki is, and he's come to like Loki rather a lot. Also, Merlin is just. So loved. Pampered as fuck. Even the rest of the team (when they’re currently in the tower) goes all gooey around this lil’ guy hahaha

The movie paused, and JARVIS said: “Pardon the interruption, but an individual resembling Thor has entered the building. Shall I let them proceed?”
Tony frowned. “What do you mean, resembling him?”
Loki stood, stretching. “I spoke to Thor and Jane not an hour ago. It should be Amora. Let her proceed, Jarvis.” He glanced at Tony, a question.
Tony nodded. “Let her in, buddy. Let’s see what her deal is this time.”
Merlin turned on his chest to meow up at Loki. Tony scratched his scruff, smiling.
“I’ll handle her. You can stay here with Merlin, if you’d like.” It was worded as a suggestion, but Tony definitely heard a weight of preference. And that just made him want to come with all the more.
He grinned up at Loki, nonchalantly business. “Are you kidding? Like I’d let you have all the fun yourself.”
Loki’s face fell into resigned blankness. “Of course you wouldn’t.”
They waited for a bit, with JARVIS updating them on Amora’s movements. She’d taken the elevator up to the communal floor, and was heading for the kitchen.
Time to move, then.
They left Merlin, who looked at them sadly but stayed behind like the good little fluffball he was. (Magic speak rocked.)
Loki’s clothes changed to his sparring fit, and Tony activated his wrist gauntlet. Loki passed him another from his magic space pocket, which he threw on as well.
In the elevator, JARVIS told them Amora seemed to be altering the contents of the fridge. A food prank?
They reached the floor, and Loki strode out, Tony right behind him.
“Brother!” Thor – Amora – boomed, looking up from the fridge with a huge grin. Damn, she was good.
“Tampering with our food, Amora? How base of you.” Loki stopped a few steps from her, and Tony took his place at his side, gauntlets active but lowered. So far, this felt less like a hostile confrontation and more like a… spat? Maybe the Thor thing was throwing him off, though.
“And I’m the only one with base tendencies and desires here, of course,” Amora retorted sarcastically, shifting back to her witch self.
“I’m sure I don’t know what you’re speaking of,” Loki said, but there was a cautious edge to it. Tony looked between them. What was going on here?
“Oh, please. Like you don’t wish to–” the sound cut off. Amora said a few words more, then raised her brows. Tony stared at her, lamenting his shit lip reading.
She glanced between them. Gaze settling on Tony, she suddenly sprang forward and shot out words like gunfire: “I said he wishes to court you, Sta–” Loki flung her back, the sound cutting off again. Tony had heard more than enough, though.
(What?)
He watched as Loki took a step closer to Amora, the motion as careful as it was threatening. He quickly followed after, not wanting to lose anything to Loki’s magic sound barrier.
“...don’t wish to truly bother me,” he heard Loki say, his voice light despite the obvious warning.
Amora threw her hands up, visibly annoyed. “Bother you? You damned– are you blind?” She gesticulated between them, oozing exasperation.
...and Loki hadn’t denied it.
(‘He wishes to court you,’ she’d said.)
Still wasn’t. Denying it. All he did was stand there, subtly tense and apparently speechless.
Tony stared at him, gobsmacked.
Loki’s gaze shifted to him, lips pressing together. There was a definite note of unease in it, but he still wasn’t rebuffing a thing. Visibly discomfited but not wanting to… lie?
Not wanting to lie.
Tony’s breath left him in a rush. He felt like he’d just completed a prototype on a week of sleepless delirium. A grin spread on his face, warmth flooding him.
“Are you going to, then?” he asked. “Court me.”
Loki studied him, caution intermingling with... hope? on his face. “...if you wish it.”
Tony wanted to answer. He really did, but just then a tiny smile found Loki’s lips, growing like a slow sunrise, and there went his air, again. That was... that was a new one. (Oh, god.) He hadn’t seen that face before, and wow, that was... just.
Dear god.
“I would like to,” Loki added softly, still with that face.
Tony was doing his best at continued existence.
Oh. Hadn’t there been a question? “Yeah. I– yeah,” he went, and that was probably an answer. Right?
Loki’s smile grew to beaming levels, and Tony was. Something. Very good. Over, around, inside the moon. A bit off this planet.
“And now the kiss,” came a stage whisper from the side.
He had totally forgotten about Amora. (Wait, Amor-a, oh my god.)
“I think you should go,” Loki told her, but he was very... smiling.
“Oh, come on,” Amora whined. “I deserve at least this much. How long would this have taken without me, hm?” she asked pointedly.
...well. She did have a point there.
And audience or no, Tony wasn’t opposed. He was so far from opposed, actually. Light years. He hummed.
Loki looked at him, expression considering. Tony shrugged, grin plastered to his face.
Turning back, Loki said, “One kiss.”
Amora bobbed her head excitedly.
Tony could relate.
He stepped eagerly towards Loki, grin widening. Anticipant as Loki turned towards him again and gently took his chin, tilting up.
Hands gripping Loki’s sides, he zeroed in on his lips: smiling, delicious looking, getting closer. Landing on Tony’s… forehead.
??
Pressing gently. Lingering. There one moment, and another, then a bit less, and finally – gone.
Tony’s heart was beating. Way too fast. Considering.
“Fine,” Amora sighed. Petulantly, and resigned.
Loki grinned, not taking his eyes from Tony. “I won’t see you out.”
Amora moped her way out (or something, Tony was distracted), and then they were alone.
“How about one more?” he asked, voice rough. He licked his lip, and Loki stared. Then looked up again, and oh– another new face.
Tony must’ve hit the jackpot today.
One more, it was.
(And then many more after.)
Notes:
Amora: I was cheated terribly. horribly
Amora: is actually happy for Loki
Loki: is secretly very grateful to Amora
Amora: your spells are still obvious as shit
Loki: maybe so
Loki: y’know what else they are though?
Amora: what
Loki: stronger than yours
Amora:
Amora: .l..
Loki: :))Fun fact: Merlin is a lot better than when he first came in, but it doesn’t take long until they decide to adopt another cat. So he can have company that is a bit more like himself. He's a little sceptical at first, but grows to like them, and the new cat likes Loki better than Tony, so it kind of works out perfectly. And though Tony has another one to be jealous of now, it’s all good. Like, it’s fine. Totally. (XDD)
No, but. Seriously: Tony discovers so many new faces of Loki’s that he's actually quite unbothered by the existence of some that aren’t his haha
