Chapter 1: Knight ceremony
Chapter Text
On a fresh morning in march, Haru woke up to the sound of birds chirping and a cool breeze blowing inside through the white curtains, which revealed the in flowers covered balcony. He slowly sat up and rubbed his eyes to get rid off the feeling of heavy eyelids. Slowly he trudged towards the open balcony door, seeking the admirable view of the ravishing garden and the roses that grew everywhere in his balcony. As Haru took a deep breath through his nose, his nostrils flattered and the welcoming, fresh smell of roses filled his nose. The air was also fresh, which was normal due to its being April. And since it was so early, it was quite foggy and the sun didn’t even came up properly yet.
The nice breeze, which hit his face felt comforting. His body was slightly sweaty from the rough night. Dreams about his parents dying and the kingdom crumbling into dust haunted him. Over and over again he was being told that he needed a queen, now, or else the kingdom will collapse. It was a dream he had every night, which was the reason for him being up so early. Over time the workers inside the castle got used to it, at first they questioned it. Why would a prince be up so early? Was something they always asked. They often said that Haru didn’t life the live every royalty should live. He helps the workers sometimes, never slept in and he is always respectful. It was so easy, so many princesses wanted him and were offered by their parents but still he couldn’t bring himself to take one of them as his wife. He got told often that something isn’t right with him by his parents, and of course he believed it as time passed. If his parents weren’t so sick, he would have time left but now every second counts.
As Haruka got lost in his own thoughts and time passed faster, only a hard knock could pull him out. As he spun on his heels to see who entered his room, the cool breeze flattened his clothes against him. “We knew you would be up so early.” Said Makoto with an apologetic smile. It didn’t really bother Haru, Makoto looked like that since both Harus parents got sick, and Haru had to start overworking himself. “Good morning.” Haru walked back in with small steps, his cream white satin pajamas now extra cold after standing out there. Makoto held a bowl filled with water in his hand, linen cloths and another bowl with essential oils.
Haruka walked over to the mirror and picked up the towel on a small chair, on which he would sit later. Haruka pulled his robe over his head, revealing his pale skin. It wasn’t really soft, because of his muscles. He enjoyed training with the squires and knights, before he had to take care of the kingdom, which really toned his body. Then he took off his silken bottoms, followed by taking off his undergarments. He then wrapped the towel loosely around his waist and sat down on the cushioned stool. “I’m ready now.” Makoto nodded before putting both wooden bowls on the table in front of him. He picked up a linen cloth and sank it into the steaming water. He gently slid it down Haru’s back, and he flinched slightly as the warm water touched him. Nagisa walked in, clearing his throat. “Good morning, crown prince. I just wanted to say that you didn’t get anything new for today, so you can fully concentrate on the paperwork you have left. And the political advisor, Gou Matsuoka took every letter that was for the queen, now the queens council is taking care of it.” Haru sighed in relief. “That’s good. Tell her that I’m really glad she did that, and that I own her something.” Nagisa tilted his head. “I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but isn’t that part of her job? To take the queens work when she’s incapable of doing it on her own?” Makoto shoot Nagisa a glance, which he thought Haruka didn’t see. “Yes, that’s right. But if the queen refuses then I have to take care of everything.” Haruka’s voice was as calm as the wind, which others often felt as him being too cold. Which also wasn’t really a lie. Nagisa stepped closer with a list, that wasn’t as long as it usually is. “Do you know what you have to do today, or want me to reread everything?” Haruka shook his head, looking at Nagisa through the mirror. “I have to check on the hall and see if the preparations for the ceremony is going well, I have to finish the left over work, bring gold to the court physician and then get the sword for the ceremony, check on the knights armor and knight them.” Nagisa nodded with a big smile. “Great! You got everything memorized. It’s less than usual but still a lot. But we will help you!” Haru’s eyes softened. Nagisa also took a cloth, dipped it into the water and washed Haru’s left arm with it. “You two know that I can do that by myself, do you?” “Of course we do, but we have to do at least something.” Makoto smiled before continuing,”And I’m your butler, it’s kind off my job to take care of you.” Both of them continued to wash Haru’s body gently, getting rid of the sweat sticking to him. He sat upright while the cloth rubbed against his neck before going down his throat, then chest. After washing Haruka’s face lastly, another cloth was picked up and soaked with sandalwood and rose oil. The linen cloth was swept against his back, leaving a noble scent behind. Nagisa, on the other hand, sunk the cloth with only a small amount of oil to use it to make Haru’s face glisten. His beauty was unbeatable, it was something that no one could lie about. Haru cleaned his teeth on his own at least, as well as getting dressed on his own. To get everything done before the ceremony, he put on a simple dark blue tunic with cream colored trousers and leather boots. The tunic hugged his well-built body just glorious.
With powerful steps, which still were full of gratitude, Haru walked into the hall. The long, dark red carpet stretched all the way from the heavy, wooden doors to the throne, which shimmered in gold and blue details. The scent of candle wax was strong, but by the time all the flowers Haru wished for would arrive, the scent should be overpowered. The hall was decorated just perfect since not many people will be there, due to not every squire having a family. Several kinds of foods and fruits were filling the long tables, wine bottles everywhere and more importantly, the king who already brought the sword. The servants all bowed to show respect to the king. He was well dressed, and the crown had its place on his head. “Father, shouldn’t you be resting in bed?” Haruka’s tone was slightly louder, but filled with respect. “I wanted to bring the sword for you.” His father said, a small smile taking on his lips as he walked down the stairs with his attendants help. One of the attendants walked forwards to Haru, bowed while holding out a circlet. It was a wonderful gold circlet, a few crystals were on it and chains hung down. “You still haven’t been coronated, but as the prince you should wear at least something to show you’re of blue blood” Haru raised an eyebrow but took it and gave it to Makoto. “I will wear it later. Thank you, Father. I appreciate it.” Haru bowed. “Is there something I can do for you?” “Yes. Come to the garden with me. I’d like to have a talk.” Haruka nodded and followed closely behind him. The attendants, Haru’s butler and messenger stayed behind since his father wished to talk to Haru alone. As they slowly walked towards the garden they could already hear water splashing from a nearby fountain. The king sat down at his favorite bench. It was slightly hidden in a corner and by a few bushes at the side but the most beautiful spot. Haru sat down next to him, waiting for the king to start talking. “Haruka, you still haven’t found a princess, have you?” Haruka sighed. “No, I haven’t.” “Tell me what the reason is. You know you’re our only hope, or else the kingdom will collapse.” Haru nodded, his heart getting heavy. He already knew where this was taking. “I apologize father, but I also don’t know the reason.” “Maybe it would have been better if we promised you to someone when you were young.” He heard his father take a deep breath. “You know, I will never be able to die peacefully if you won’t marry and save the kingdom. I know this is a lot for you, but you are 17 and turning 18 in only two months. I married your mother with 15.” It’s always the same. It’s always him getting compared to other royals. “Yes, I know father. I will marry someone soon, I promise.” Before his father could deepen this conversation and make Haru feel even worse, Haru stood up. “You should head back to your room and rest. I gotta go now.” He peeked over his shoulder and looked at the old, exhausted, once one of the strongest men, sitting there.
With heavy steps Haru got the gold for the court physician. His chamber was located offside the castle. To get there you had to follow the stone padded path, which sides were full of medical herbals. The smell of the herbs was strong, so strong it overpowered the smell of dozens of flowers. Lavender, rosemary, sage chamomile, yarrow and so much more lined the walkways, standing there as if it was a sacred offer. As the door opened, the in dim light, of wood smelling apothecary room showed. Its shelves were covered in dried petals, tinctures and handwritten rolls. The physician seemed to mix together an ointment before his eyes met Harus, his lips forming into a warm, friendly smile. “The crown prince himself, again.” He chuckled,”What can I do for you? Did you get bruised again?” Haru shook his head before unbuckling a strap, the leather bag loosening off Haru. “Thank you for taking such good care of my parents.” Haru handed him the bag filled with gold. “No need to thank me, and besides,” he took a brief stop, before inhaling and continuing,”I still haven’t healed them, and I’m not sure if I can.” “But you try. It’s all that counts.” The old man smiled again, the heavy smile lines deepening even more. His skin was tan, an olive tone even, due to being out of the western side of Asia. But he learned Japanese in no time, and probably speaks better than most people here. “I should thank you.” Haru felt bad for him. Since he couldn’t heal both Harus parents everyone started to dismiss him, just the royalty their selves not. Before Haru could leave, the physician called him. “Prince Haru, today you will take your fathers place and lead the ceremony, right?” Haru nodded solemnly. “Take this with you. In case you don’t feel good.” Haru stared at the small porcelain bottle, filled with probably herbs and ginger. “This will help you keep your balance for a few hours, but listen young boy, if you overdo it I cannot guarantee you anything.” “Thank you. I will be careful.” The physician was always worried about Harus health and would give him a whole collection of tea, ointments and herbals that he could eat.
Haru, Makoto, Nagisa and a few knights were all in the solar, the candlelight illuminating the parchment in front of him. Only a single letter to be answered was left. Haru successfully worked through every single letter which meant refusing several princesses offered for marriage, things about contracts with other realms, the payments for the workers and a lot more. “I really don’t get why you don’t even meet up with the princesses once, Prince Haru.” Nagisa sighed as Haru wrote about his refusal. “Because I don’t feel like it.” Makoto gulped,”But how else are you planning on finding the next queen?” “I will do it. I just need more time.” Haru said, his voice rising even though he kept his best to stay calm. He rubbed his temples, searching some relieve for his aching head. He picked up the stencil, and imprinted the Kingdoms sign on the letter. “Nagisa, you can bring them down for transport now.” Nagisa nodded as he took everything with him. “Shall we go to your room now?” It was time to get ready for the ceremony.
Haru wore a long, dark red gown, his satin shirt beige with golden embroidery shimmering under the candlelight. Draped lazily across his chest was a ceremonial sash, ornately decorated with gold threads and tiny diamonds, sparkling with every breath he took. A delicate circlet framed his black hair perfectly, glinting like a crown that whispered rather than shouted. Both Nagisa and Makoto were awestruck. “You look awesome, Prince Haru!” Nagisa beamed, Makoto just nodded. “You really look perfect.” Nagisa snickered. “I hope you look as amazing as you do now on your birthday.” Haru smiled softly. “The sword should be next to your throne, so I guess we could make our way to the hall now.” Both Nagisa and Haru nodded. Haru took a deep breath and drank what ever was in the porcelain bottle to calm down his racing heart. It’s not like he knights people everyday, and one of the six squires, the youngest of them all, is Rin.
The three of them walked in once again, the murmuring inside the hall only silencing down as Haru stepped forward. Trumpets blared through the whole hall, the loud sound proud and clear. As a contrast, there was the soft melody of a string quartet coming from somewhere. All the six squires were close to the thrones, each of them had a proud grin on despite the nervous fidgeting with their hands. Not only the red carpet stretched all the way to the thrones, but the amount of armored guards did too. Through the colorful windows shone the sunlight, leaving colorful marbles behind. Most of the people here were people Haru could easily recognize, the rest he couldn’t recognize where probably relatives of the soon to be knights. He walked all the way to the throne, everyone who he walked past instantly vowed, the last one to vow was Rin. His eyes catched Harus before he lowered his head. As he arrived at the throne, he cleared his throat and then started the speech he’s been preparing for a month. His eyes wandered around to make sure he had everyone’s attention. “Dear folks of Celandine, and fellow squires,” Haru added as he peeked at Rin,”today we have the honor to knight six young men. The last time we knighted someone is far too long, and now we even have six new knights. These men proved to be strong, brave, kind, fair and courageous. They’ve gone through all stages just to serve the country, protect it and protect the folk.” Haru took a deep breath as the whole hall applauded. “Now, you all may amuse yourself until the squires will be getting knighted.” Haru ended his speech with that and stepped down the throne, the trumpets and string quartets filling the silence of the hall along with the voices of the guests. Haru made his way to greet the royals that came to watch the knighting. Each princess already made their way to ask a squire of their choice for an dance. “So, your parents won’t get better, will they?” Haru shook his head, sighting. “They probably won’t. They are getting weaker everyday, and even our skilled physician can’t help them. He tries his best by giving them medicine, but he can only extend their lifespan to a certain amount.” The queen nodded through Haru talking to show that she’s listening to him. “So the kingdom is relying on you, isn’t it?” “Yes it is.” More and more people got into conversations with the crown prince. As Haru slowly stepped out of the conversation, he made his way to Makoto who was watching everything from the sidelines. Haru sat down and watched the soon to be knights dance with the princesses. On the other side were other squires sitting, but they all would take a few more years. Nagisa listened to the tall boy next to him with a grin, he chose his words precisely as if lecturing Nagisa instead of chatting. “Don’t you think Rins footwork is off-beat?” Rei commented, completely dismissing their earlier conversation. “Rei-chan, you’re being quite extra, don’t you think?” Nagisa chuckled.
Rin also seemed to enjoy himself and rather talked to all the princesses than coming up to Haru who made his way back to the throne.
After an hour passed, Haru thought it’s about time he knights the squires. Once again he cleared his throat, holding up his hand so the string quartets would quiet down. “May I ask for your attention!” All eyes were turned towards him again. “It’s about time we knights the squires.” Everyone applauded, the squires were nervous again. The young squires who were only here to help walked towards the throne with the sword and things that will be given to the knights. Each soon to be knight walked to Haru, kneeling in front of the crown prince which was followed by a promise and an applause.
Last but not least, Rin Matsuoka walked up to Haru. He knelt down, head down as the ceremonial sword gleamed in Harus hand. “Do you swear to protect the kingdom, to serve with honor and uphold the laws of the crown even if it costs you your life?” “Yes, I swear to protect the kingdom, and you, with all my strength, even if it means giving up my own life.” Haru swung the sword and gently touched each of Rins shoulders. “Rise, Sir Rin.” Rin slowly stood up, his eyes meeting Harus blue ones. Haru stepped closer and gave him an ornate sword and a gold engraved shoulder plate. Rin was confused on why he wasn’t getting a cloak. A loud applause followed again, welcoming the new knight. Just as Rin was about to step down, “And,” Harus loud voice pierced through the hall, silencing it down as his face erupted in a proud smile,”Our kingdoms hope and light, our youngest knight, Rin Matsuoka showed more courage and skill than most could. With only 18 years, Rin is one of the youngest knights.” Rin tilted his head in confusion. Haru took the dark blue cloak which had gold details all over from one of the squires and handed it to Rin. The other cloaks are dark red, Rin realized that moment.
As everyone enjoyed themselves even more, Haru excused himself to get some fresh air. He could feel eyes at his back, but didn't mind them since he would be getting watched all the time. As he stepped outside and took a deep breath, it felt as if he exhaled his throbbing headache too. His eyes trailed to the dark sky, the stars and the moon. “The youngest knight, hm?” Haru got startled as he suddenly heard a voice behind him. Rin smirked. “Yes. You did really great.” “Thanks, my dear prince.”
Chapter 2: Tournament
Summary:
A few weeks later people all over the court murmured, and loud trumpets, awards and much more was carried around again. The reason? The knightly tournament. It was the best way for each knight to get themselves more known, and gain reputation, bravery and confidence. While it was training for the knights, the others saw it as amusing “show”. The knights fought each other- on horses, in forests and on the floor while thousands of people and the knights that lost watched one.
Flabbergasted they looked at each other as the crown prince walked onto the court. Many weren’t that surprised.
Notes:
PLEASE READ!
im not used to write long things, that’s why I’m trying the best I can. And im sorry if it’s really short and not well described, written or worded. And English isn’t my first language, so I’m sometimes overwhelmed and even tho I can just google everything I still find it hard to use words appropriate for the time im writing in. And I wasn’t sure how tournaments like that went on, I only knew about jousting so I looked up many other tournaments. Catch the flag is more a military thing if I got it right? I just changed a few things. And im not sure what each running word or whatever for a horse means so sorry if I made mistakes.

Chapter Text
The morning was the same, just that maybe the crown prince would have slept a tad longer if it weren’t so noisy outside. Last night he stayed up longer than intended due to organizing a few things. Slowly he sat up and stretched his arms over his head. Since he already woke up early, he didn’t want to waste any time, because today is THE tournament. Since they are in the middle of April it’s finally warming up a bit. To be clear, once in a while between heavy winds and rain, the sky clears up and the sun shines. Haru ruffled his hair, making it even more messy. He stood up and walked towards his door to peek out. He was waiting for Makoto and Nagisa. He looked to the left and to the right, and other than a few maidens walking around he didn’t saw them. Just as he was about to step inside and wait there, makoto walked past the floor where Harus room is. Haru couldn’t hear him, but he definitely made an oh sound. Makoto then turned around and kept walked somewhere leaving Haruka confused. He already said, or more, said it to himself that he cant loose any time. He wants to get ready as quick as possible, but is too ashamed to walk out in this state and get everything he needs by himself. He groans and walks back to his bed, letting himself fall down. He looks up at the ceiling covered in gold and a beautiful drawing of angels in the middle. Today, Haruka wants to participate in the knightly tournament. He often trained with them and he got lectures by experienced fighters so he must be alright. He really wanted to participate. And this year, finally, the new knights would also participate. Gosh, Haru loved the tournament. Even tho he kind off was a future commander, which was one of the reasons miss amakata wouldn’t leave him alone, he still liked taking part in the tournament as a soldier.
He walked back and forth. Would it be that unprofessional to just walk out like that? As he decided to just go out in his sleepy state, whether someone could see him or not, the door opened. Nagisa and Makoto came in with the things they needed to get Haru done as always. “Did you two bring it?…” Haru trailed off, looking at them both from head to toe but not seeing what he wanted. “What?” Nagisa tilts his head in confusion. “The sword and armor? All I can see is two bowls.” Both let out an, long dragged ohhh as they realize what they forgot. “And I had the feeling we forgot something the whole time.” Nagisa said while chuckling before turning around. “I will be back in no time.” Haru already started taking off his clothes. Makoto seemed to have something heavy on his mind before he spoke. “Haru, are you sure you want to participate in the tournament?” Before Haruka could response, Makoto breath in briefly and tried to explain what he meant. “You could get seriously hurt. Just be careful.” Haruka nodded. He didn’t really want to win or prove anything to anyone, he just wanted to be there, so he sure won’t loose all his limbs.
Since it was surely very early, Haru decided to train and loosen up. It been a while since he last joined the knights, or to be more clear, the former squires in their training. He didn’t loose his build or anything, it just feels as if he forgot how to fight.
As Nagisa dropped off everything Haru asked for, they made their way to the grand hall where the knights used to train if it was too cold. Haru decides to put on the armor later and loosen up now. The other knights were all outside in the front yard, it was specially build for the knights and has lots of weapons which are always available, and the floor is hard but not hard enough to cause serious damage if anyone got slammed down.
Due to the warm water he got cleaned with, he already felt much better. He started simple with swinging his sword to get used to the movement again, even in a fight. Inside the hall was some wooden he decided to chop. He took a swing and aimed at it, parting it in two halves. The upper half slowly slid down. He continued practicing his sword swings until his arms burned.
After that he decided to go horseback riding. It wasn’t just important for the joust but also calmed Haru down. He rode a gleaming white Lipizzaner through the wind, his hair flying all across his face as he rode towards forest. The sky was slowly but surely starting to clear up, thankfully, no one liked watching the tournament while it rained. On his way to the forest he saw tons of knights from other kingdoms arriving, which was normal. Celandine hadn’t held a tournament last year, it really was unpleasant but the due to the sick royal couple they decided to distance from others and focuse on themselves. This year it was different, the kingdom finally bonded more and that it has new knights is just one more reason to have the tournament. As the horse and Haru entered the forest, the horse jumped over a fallen tree, making their arrival clear with the loud thud it had while landing. Haruka kept his quick pace, following the path in the forest. It was free from anything that could disturb anyone while riding, so Haru liked to come here and a bonus- the view was magnificent.
Just as Haru thought about slowing down, someone suddenly rode next to him and then in front of him. He was faster, way faster than Haru was. Was he challenging Haru? He pulled at the leash in his hand and his horse started to run faster, now he was next to that someone who may have challenged him. It was a black Frisian horse and the owner seemed to be a knight if Haruka had to guess. The horse must be new, he never saw it here before. Haru thought that it must be someone from a different kingdom, still he kept his fast pace. The knight right next to him turned his head once towards him before riding even faster. He was now curious and started to catch up again. With every step, the ground trembled beneath them. Haru didn’t want to loose him out of curiosity, but he did a good job at keeping up. Haru knew the forest better than anyone, since he wasn’t allowed to go anywhere else he always came to this forest. So, he decided to take a short cut, abruptly changing the direction of where the horse was headed. The way he took wasn’t the smoothest but it was just fine. Haru pushed branches and twigs out of the way. It was more secluded, so when Haru was about to head left and finally stop him the sun blinded Haru but not enough to stop him. The knight turned his head towards the way Haru was jumping out, and just then he got even faster. Haru groaned in frustration, now lead by the feeling of having to catch up and stop whoever that was. His gaze was fixed on the knight. He didn’t wear a cloak or symbol, so it was hard figuring out to which kingdom he belonged to. His eyes didn’t leave him once, resembling in him not seeing the tree right in front of him. As his horse stomped and let out a high-pitched whinny and eventually kicked up its front legs, Haru fell of its back.
Haru looked up at the sky and the trees blocking most of it. Of course that had to happen. The knight and his horse turned around, riding back. As the knight jumped off the back of the horse he reached out an hand to help Haru up and suddenly spoke up. Haru now knew who it was. “Are you hurt somewhere?” Rin chuckled,”You aren’t really known to be competitive.” “I was just curious.” Haru took Rins hand and stood up, rubbing the dirt off his back. Rin now took of his helmet, presenting a flashy grin. “Curious of what? If you could win?” “No, curious of who was challenging me all of a sudden.” Haru spoke in his usual calm tone, while Rin sounded more amused. “I saw you and thought it would be fun challenging you. Which really was fun.” He added. “Come on, let me help you.” He pulled Haru closer by his shoulders, wiping of the dirt with his cold big hands. Haruka could feel his hot breath on his neck as he stood close. “So, are you hurt somewhere or not?” As he spoke, his hot breath tickled Harukas ear, resulting to a shiver run down his spine. “Ah, no. I’m fine, I was just shocked at first.” Harus horse neighed. “Why did you come to the forest?” He asked Rin. “Just preparing for the jousting, and bonding with my new horse.” Rin explained. The black horse shimmered in the most beautiful way possible. “It seemed to trust you just fine.” Haruka pointed out. He wanted it to come out as a compliment, but it sounded more like he was accusing Rin of something, which made Rin raise an eyebrow. “We should head back now.” Rin suggested while making his way back on his horse. Haru did that too, and while slowly riding back they chatted.
“Did you saw all the knights? Won’t it take several hours for just a single discipline at this rate?” “Yeah, it probably will.” Harus head bobbed up and down with every step of his horse. “I hope I win.” Rin muttered. Haru turned his head to look at the boy, his maroon hair shining, jawline sharp and eyes fixated on the castle. He smiled softly. He also hoped that. They both silenced down, but not in an awkward way but more in a relaxing way. After quietly riding next to each other, they almost arrived at the kingdom again so Rin put his helmet back on. “Where is your cloak?” “It’s still inside the castle. I didn’t want to get it dirty, in case she suddenly acted up and I would have fallen down just like you.” Rin recalled the moment Haru fell off his horse with a big grin. “Mh.”
Haruka and Rin decided to go in by a small door on the back of the castle, since the big entrance was too crowded. “See you later!” “See you later.” Rin walked towards the rest of the knights who were already waiting for him. “Good luck! You’ll need it.” That someone said to Rin as his voice got cockier. Haruka made his way towards his room where Makoto and Nagisa should be waiting for him as well. He still had some time left before the tournament started which he definitely would use to apply ointment to his back. It didn’t hurt a lot when he fell of the horse, but it still hurt. As he stepped into the room he saw the two boys cleaning the sword. “You two didn’t have to do that.” Haru still appreciated it. “We probably won’t even get to use the swords.” Nagisa nodded. “The prince is right” “Don’t call me that.” Haru interrupted before Nagisa continued,”I saw all the disciplines. No swords will be included.” Makoto smiled. “That’s good. It’ll lower the risk of dead knights.” Nagisa rubbed the back of his neck with a not so amused expression. “What kind of discipline will there be? The same as always?” “Yeah, just archery and the hand-to-hand combat at the end is new.” Makoto raised an eyebrow confused. “Archery?” “Yeah, it’s kinda like the calm before the storm. After that, jousting is next.” Makoto nodded.
Haru walked to his desk and got out the ointment. He smeared the cold, thick cream all over his back. “Did you get hurt?” Makoto and Nagisa asked in sync. “Yeah, but it’s nothing. I fell off my horse.” “Can you fight like that?” Haruka let out a breathy yes. They offered their help, but Haru insisted he does it by himself. Just after a minute he already felt better, the cooling ointment worked like a miracle. He cleaned his hands on a linen cloth that laid on the desk. “So, let’s get you done.” Haruka breath in sharply. When did he last wear an armor? He walked towards them and started taking off everything but his undergarments. He put on another shirt and a chain mail before stepping into the armor, the feeling familiar but somehow strange at the same time. Nagisa and Makoto stepped back to look at him, both showing a thumbs up. “You look great! Ready for the helmet?” Haruka nodded as Makoto rose it up to his head and gently let it down. His armor didn’t look any different from the other ones, his cloak was dark red and his sword was basic just that the silver was slightly lighter, which wasn’t really noticeable. He didn’t take his sword with him and instead made his way to the place the tournament will be held. Just as he stepped outside the castle, he could already hear the voices of thousands of people screaming. Makoto and Nagisa went to the stall to look after Harukas horse and feed it before it’s coming to use.
Each step felt heavier than the last. Haru wasn’t sure what made him so nervous and scared. Was it loosing? Haru thought to himself, his heart hammering in his chest. No, it was winning. At first he didn’t think much of Rin wanting to win, but now? He shook his head and continued to walk. As he finally stepped on the court, hundreds of knights turned their head towards him. The people sitting on the podiums quiet down and started to mumble. His armor looked just like the other knights armors, so what was with all the people staring. The last steps before he stood next to the team he’ll be with on the first discipline felt even heavier. He breath in and out, he tried to calm down. He wasn’t the shy type, he grew up with tons of people watching him. He felt someone grab his helmet and pull it off. “I knew it.” Rin laughed, he stood tall and confident not doubting his victory. Haru looked at him with wide eyes before they softened. Rin put the helmet back on and pat his head twice. “Good luck.” “Thanks,” Haru paused and wanted to wish him good luck back before Rin interrupted. “We’re on the same team for the first discipline, right prince?” Haru nodded.
A loud voice rose up silencing everyone on the court and podium. It was the political advisor, Gou matsuoka. She spoke in the queens place.“I am glad so many Kingdoms took the long way to Celandine for the yearly tournament. As many of you must know, last year the tournament unfortunately was cancelled, due to our fellow king and queen being deathly sick. We only could concentrate on our kingdom and try our best to get everything as flourished as it once was.” Her loud voice pierced through everyone’s ears. “But as you can see, we’re finally getting back to our old selves. Our dear crown prince, Haruka Nanase, took care of it and decided to try and keep everything balanced while searching the next queen to continue the bloodline.” The crowd applauded before Gou spoke up again. “And- as many of you should know, we just gained more knights to support the military.” She smiled, clearly proud. “Now, let’s get back to the tournament. Today, we’ll be having several discipline which contain pure strength, stamina, pace, agility and bravery.” She said, before listening all the disciplines for today. It wasn’t a lot, but it sure was going to take a while. That’s exactly why after the first discipline only half of the knights should be left.
The first discipline was Catch a flag. It was simple, the knights got divided into four groups and with them they had to get the flag of another team and bring it to the court middle. The first two teams to arrive would make it into the next round. It seemed easy, but on the way to each flag were several obstacles and other knights were allowed to fight you, and will fight you. The discipline would always come first so not too many knights are left for the following disciplines. But not only that, you had to show how good your stamina and team work is, and if you can make up strategies that work.
For each team to find each other they were given a bit of time. After a lot of confusion everyone found their teams. Haru and Rins team talked about which flag they should catch, and decided in no time. After they discussed a few strategies, the loud trumpets signaling the start blasted their ears. All of the knights ran forward and made their way into the forest. With a horse it takes only five minutes, but by foot it can take up to ten minutes. Each knight ran as fast as they could. He saw people who were incredibly fast and wondered how fast they’d be without armor that weighs 66 lb.
Each team was left on their own on planning everything, to be particular, they plan who gets the flag and how they will bring it back. Harukas team went for the simplest way of getting it and bringing it to the middle of the field. They formed a sort of a line, with not too far distances. Each knight ran with the flag until he met another knight from his team and gave it to him, and so on until the last, fastest knight, brought the flag to the middle of the field. The knight to run into the forest, fight and snatch the flag was Rin. The one who was going to bring it to the middle of the field was Haru.
Another team had the same idea as them, so it was up to Haru to run faster. While he waited for the penultimate knight to finally get here, he looked to the side to the other guy. On his armor he had a sign he couldn’t quite identify, it looked as if the left side of his breastplate was melted first and then the sign was drawn. The knight seemed to dig, his index finger poked a hole into the ground so he could one by one dig in better. His in dirt covered index finger came out just so he could use more of his hand now and widen the hole. Haruka raised an eyebrow, not wanting to interfere as soon as it won’t do anything to the tournament. Haru tried to think of reasons why someone would dig randomly and suddenly found it way more suspicious than before. Isn’t it really weird if someone randomly started digging a hole into the ground? His heels turned towards the guy, ready to ask questions on what was happening. Just as Haru was about to speak up the penultimate knight screamed Harukas name with a flag in his hand. He ran so fast that with each step the ground trembled. Or maybe the reason was that a few hundred people were running around. Haruka instantly prepared himself to run, knees bending slightly and eyes already looking at the goal. And as he snatched the flag from the other knights hand, he sprinted off. Not too much later, maybe half a minute later, the guy who was digging also ran with the flag. Haruka tried his best to run incredibly fast, even tho the armor was kind of slowing him down. As soon as he ran into the field, many people, family and friends, or to be more clear, everyone from Celandine cheered for Haruka. He kind off was the prince of celandine so he understood what the cheers were for. He swung back before hitting the wooden part of the flag into the ground, causing quite a rumble beneath his feet. The plan worked. Haru sighed in relief. The knights that lost continued watching from the podiums. The ones that won had to do archery now. No one could win or loose, it was just for everyone to keep their cool and to show how precisely each knight is with the bow and arrow. Haruka slowly rose the bow up by the grip slightly under the arrow rest. He pulled both bowstring and arrow back and let go of it after aiming. Perfect he aimed at the middle, the squires who helped organizing the tournament gasped.
After the archery came to an end, jousting started. Everyone waited specially for jousting. Jousting was found during the late 11th century in north-west France. It became a main event in Europe before it became the most popular spectacle in the 13th century. Two warriors gallop each other with lances, the one to fall off the horse looses or get their lance or helmet broken looses. This tournament two rounds will be held, so at the end they must be only two left. If not, then another round will be held. It’s something that goes over extremely fast. The knights are separated by a wooden barrier, both hold out their lance and gallop forward and with all their strength they try to knock the other down while riding right past them.
Finally, Nagisa and Makoto came back with Harukas white horse. Its brown leather saddle was put on, the throatlash and cheekpiece as well. The browband and noseband had gold details on it, while the rest was kept simple. Haruka walked over to them and stroke the horses head. Both the boys smiled at him. “Show them what a good fighter you are!” Nagisa beamed while throwing his fist into the air. Harukas facial expression relaxed,”Thank you.” Makoto on the other hand smiled while mouthing an “good luck”.
As the first two fought, everyone screamed and shouted. The fight was amusing, though it was over quite fast, which is only normal considering the difference in their build, which you could even see through the armor. The smaller one was still determined to win. With a loud growl, he pointed the lance against his opponents shoulder just to suddenly go for the chest. It would’ve been a smart move, if only his opponent wasn’t build like a castle door. The way he got unhorsed looked incredibly painful, even his helmet fell off. The next fights were also over fast, and Haruka got so lost in watching them that he almost forgot that he’s next. He inhaled as he looked around for Rin, he wanted to see him at least once before he goes into that fight. He was nowhere to be seen, and since none of the knights wore a cloak Haru could only guess who was Rin. Haruka climbed onto the horse effortlessly. Just as he made himself comfortable on the seat, Makoto and Nagisa handed him the lance. Haruka felt a rush of excitement run through his body as the heaviness of the lance started to kick in. It was about 4’11 long and quite heavy, its shaft was made out of wooden and it had a metal tip. It wasn’t used in real combats and mostly only for events, at least it was like that for Harukas realm, the reason is that the heavy lances were really tiring. It wouldn’t be convenient if a knights arm suddenly gave up. So smaller and lighter swords were better. Harus horse trotted forward, his opponent also arriving. Haruka could be flummoxed, but the person on the other horse was the knight who was digging earlier. He recognized him by the symbol he still couldn’t figure out, and that the gauntlet he wore were dirty. He decided to let go of it and just fight, not wanting to dwell on it for too long. It also could be someone else. And it didn’t make any difference that the guy did something earlier. Haruka adjusted his helmet with his free hand before the loud trumpets signalized the start once again.
Harukas body leaned forward slightly to have more control over the lance in his right hand, while his horse cantered now. He could already feel the burn in his biceps just from holding the lance. As his horse galloped even faster, he finally felt the presence of his opponent and just then he gripped the lance even tighter and smashed him with it. Haruka got almost touched by the other lance due to not reacting quick enough. Even if he would’ve gotten touched, Haru was stronger and Haruka managed to shatter his opponents helmet. His opponent, whose face was now exposed glared at Haruka before riding off.
Rins fight also went well, just that he pushed his opponent down the horse with full force. Jousting could really hurt if you were the one getting hit.
Haruka went to the little girls who took care of nutrition for the horses and looked for an apple. “Haru! Have you eaten anything today?” Haruka thought. He got up, trained, fought- and didn’t eat. “No.” Rin whistled in shock. “And you’re still on your legs?” Haru shrugged with a small smile. “Let’s get something.” Rin smiled as he gently pulled Haruka with him. They got some pastries filled with cheese. At such tournaments it was only normal that they were many hearty, simple things that you could eat while standing.
Meat skewers, broth in a cup, bread and cheese, meat pies and pastries filled with vegetables or cheese were the most common foods. The cheese was usual firm, so it’s more easy to carry around. Even if it melted inside the pastries due to the warmth, it quickly went back to its previous state.
Haruka and Rin sat next to each other while eating. They decided to go to a more secluded place, so that they can eat calmly but still see the tournament. Both ate in peace under the sunlight, not exchanging any words. Just as Haru was about to take a bite, Rin waved his hand in front of his face. Haru glanced to the side,”Is there something wrong?” “There was something flying around you. I think it was a bee. Probably because of your flower-like smell.” Rin smiled. Haru looked away from Rins eyes and continued eating. Gou announced the next knights to fight each other. Even though her voice reached them only dimly, the maroon haired boy jumped up. “See you in two minutes!” He grinned.
Haru and Rin now won all of their jousts and are the last two to stand. The sun was already starting to set. “Thank you all for enjoying the show! Now, we almost came to an end. Today we will end the day with something different than jousting- a direct hand-to-hand combat. The two last remaining knights will fight each other with their own fists and are allowed to use brutal force. The looser is the one who ends up dead, disabled or somehow unable to fight.” Haru gulped. The jousts were way too easy, and Haru knew it would end with a hand-to-hand combat but still his eyes widened in surprise. Rin already put his helmet back on, walking now onto the court free from barriers or any other obstacles. A punch against the breastplate wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do. Head as well, the armor there was way too hard. It would hurt the one throwing the punch more than the one who is receiving them. The best place to hit against was the empty space between the helmet, breastplate and chain mail. The empty space was small, but enough for a fist or sword, tho the fist would also bump against the helmet. The armor had to have a few weak points. Another one is right were the armpit is, that space also isn’t well protected and inside the armpit are lots of important arteries, and if someone pierced their sword right through it or under the chin that would lead to an instant death. But fortunately, swords aren’t allowed and even if they were, Haru would never pierce Rin with a sword. And Rin on the other hand would never get himself killed by a sword.
The sky was now orange and blue, and even clearer than this afternoon. The crowd wasn’t as loud as they were in the previous disciplines. The atmosphere felt thick and suffocating but still both of the boys took proud steps into the middle of the field. Every type of move they knew were allowed, as soon as they didn’t use any weapons. Haruka exhaled, his mind trailing off. He wondered what Rin must be thinking. Harukas heart beat faster, and before he could think any more the loud trumpets interrupted Harus thoughts. „Arw you ready?“ He asked with a proud grin. „I am. The better question is, are you?“ Rin already ran forward, looking ready as ever to pull out Harus spine. As soon as Rins upper body collided with Harus, Haru fell backwards and Rin right on top of him. The heavy weight of the boy pulled Haru out of focus. He kicked up his knee, hitting Rin right in his most precious place before using all his strength to push him down and stand up. Rin quickly followed, now back on his feet as well. How could anyone find this amusing. Haru thought while dodging a fist that could’ve shattered his helmet. But to his luck, another one followed. Thank god the helmet dulled the punch, so haru only stumbled slightly. He took about three steps back before jumping up with all his might, kicking rins helmet off. Of course Haru didn’t land such a jump with such a heavy armor. Now that he had Rins whole face he had many different ways to knock him out. The body follows the head. A punch to the nose makes the eyes water, even if it didn’t hurt. The best way to knock someone out is by their jaw. Punches against the head can cause serious damages.
Haru decided to land a punch on the nose first- landed. Rin winced and held his nose for a brief moment, before turning back to Haru and punching him that hard his helmet half flew off and stayed half on. Haruka took it off and threw it to the ground. It was a stupid move, but at least now it seemed move fair to Haru. Another punch was coming towards Haru, again aimed at his cheek but now nearer to the jaw. Haru caught the hand and instead brutally slammed his head against Rins. He was right. Rins head flew back, even if it was just a little bit it flew back and his body followed. Now, Haru aimed for his jaw, his arm stretched out as he was about to hit. Rin grabbed the arm by the upper arm and pulled him closer, his grip now loosening and going for his wrist instead. Rin turned so Harus arm was at his chest and Harus chest was against rins back. Rin slowly bend, his hips now beneath Harukas before he threw Haruka with all his strength over his shoulder. As Haruka landed everyone waited to see if he would stand up again. Haruka didn’t. His shoulder now felt numb, he couldn’t feel his arm. Haruka winced in pain, a whimper leaving his mouth. The crowd cheered for Rin before Nagisa and Makoto ran to the rescue.
Later, it turned out that Harukas head of the upper arm bone popped out. That also explained the swelling, numbness and his limp arm. He even had a huge bruise there. Now, it was midnight and after he got cleaned and treated he head into his bed. But sleeping was impossible. His shoulder hurt so bad, sweat started to form at his forehead and he couldn’t stop whimpering. As Haruka thought he finally started to hallucinate, he realized that the sounds coming from his balcony aren’t made up at all. He slowly stood up and limped to the balcony. His muscles were sore. As he stepped outside, a shiver ran down his spine as he stepped barefoot onto the cold ground covered in rose petals. As he looked to the side he saw a special knight trying to climb inside the balcony. “May I ask what you’re doing?” Rin gasped before leaning forward. Even if he couldn’t climb inside, he still wanted to lean against the balcony railings. Haru used his hand that still worked to take off Rins helmet. “Haru”, Rin trailed off. His eyes were softer than usual. “How do you feel? Are you in a lot of pain? I was so egoistic.” Rin wanted to pull Haru into a hug but decided to not risk it with his shoulder. Before Haru could answer, Rin gasped again. “Your shoulder! It looks different from the other one.” “Yeah, because it popped out, so it’s more flat than round. And it” Haru knew that Rin would feel bad if he’d tell the truth,”it doesn’t hurt. The court physician said it should heal in about a month.” “That’s a lot. I’m sorry. Now you’re shoulder is really sensitive, isn’t it? There’s a higher risk it’ll pop out even if healed.” Haru nodded. “It’s fine.” He smiled softly. “I think the move you did was awesome.” Rin looked at him with wide eyes before chuckling. Rin rose his other hand up. “Here,” Rin avoided Harukas gaze,”a forget-me-not. It reminded me of your blue eyes so I took it with me.” He said before his eyes met Harus again. Haruka didn’t knew what kind of expression he made at that moment, but whatever it was he hoped it matched the warmth in his chest and the ticklish feeling inside his stomach. “Thank you.” Haru took the blue flower from his hand and gave back the helmet. Haru slightly hid behind the flower. He wasn’t sure what he should say. He heard a knock at his door. He could already imagine who it was. “I should go.” Rin said before putting on his helmet with a smile and climbing down. Haru is still surprised he came up here but decided to not question that man. He walked back in now where Makoto and Nagisa were waiting, his pain now forgotten. Almost forgotten. A forget-me-not stands for true love, remembrance and faithfulness. Was it a coincidence? It must be.
Notes:
Im so so sorry that the chapter was kinda rushed, I promise I’ll try to make the chapters better. But I think the only chapters that’ll be interesting are the last ones…
Btw, in this chapter I decided to let Haru and rin talk the most since in the last chapter they exchanged maybe 2 sentences? Yayyy
Chapter 3: Beyond the Castle
Summary:
Harukas shoulder still needs a while to heal, meaning he is forbidden to do anything that could disturb the healing process. Yeah, of course he complained about all the work he has to do since the royal pair is sick but doing nothing seemed even worse. But maybe given a lot of free time wasn’t as bad as Haru thought it’ll be.
Notes:
Goshhhh I had so many exams and practice that I couldn’t start writing, and then when I had free time I realized I had no ideas… But here I am! And I still don’t know how many chapters this is gonna have but yeah. And I actually passed all my exams! Woah…

Chapter Text
In a place Haru knew all too well stood a familiar figure, daisies resting in his left hand. The only place Haru was ever allowed to. The trees were full with green leaves hanging down and some even had fruits or flowers, the sun barely shone through the thick layer of leaves. The path was clear, the sides on the other hand were covered in flowers. As he walked up to Haruka he blocked more and more of the only sunlight that shone right into Harus eyes, instead taking the light to himself and creating the illusion of an halo. ”Haru”, Rin whispered to the blue eyed boy, his warm breath tickling his cheek. “Yes?” Haru asked, slowly turning his head to look at the intense glare. “Haru”, Rin called out again. Haru tilted his head softly, waiting for him to continue. ”I’m listening to you.” Haru assured. “Haru. Don’t forget about me. Even if I die”, Rin said, smiling softly. “I won’t” “Are you sure?” “I am sure” Rins face lightened up, his eyes squeezing shut with a bright smile.
Haru woke up as a loud growl came from the garden that can be looked at from Harus balcony. The extreme pain of his shoulder brought him back to reality, showing him what the difference between dream and reality was. Haru shook his head so he can think clear again. Even though he started to slowly forget what happened in the dream, he still remembered that Rin asked if he’d remember him even if Rin died. Such an odd question, Haruka thought. Why would he forget him? Why would he even die. Sure, he’s a knight but- Haru shook his head again. He didn’t want to think about how every knight ends for now. He knew the day was probably going to be boring again, but other than being careful and hoping his shoulder will heal as quick as possible, he had no other choice. With deliberate steps he walked to the balcony, which he probably has been doing for years every morning without getting tired, but the view is truly spectacular, so who can blame him? The knights had asked for permission to train inside the garden, since their usual place is still occupied by the maidens who are tidying there. The tournament sure left its aftermaths. Haru of course gave them the permission, and he maybe even would’ve joined them if it wasn’t for his shoulder. Since the accident happened, Rin apologized maybe 5 times per day, or more, Haru stopped counting after only three days.
As he leaned over the cool stone balustrade to look at the knights, Rin saw him. He took off his helmet, his maroon hair flying free with the breeze blowing in his face, he smiled before waving his hand. “Good morning!” He shouted for Haru to hear, cupping his hands around his mouth. “Good morning”, Haru replied. “Are you feeling any better?” He walked closer to the balcony though he got called back. “Could be better, but yes.” Rin smiled though he clearly still felt bad. Haru already saw a knight getting send to Rin, probably to get him back. “You should go ba-“ Haru started before getting interrupted. “Haru! Don’t lean so far over the balcony!” Makoto shouted. “I’m heading back inside now!” Haru told Rin, who smiled and nodded, before he walked in with more energy than when he walked out. “Good morning, Haru.” Nagisa and Makoto said in sync, even bowing though Haru told them not to several times. “I don’t like it when you guys bow.” Makoto let out a breathy laugh, as if saying we know without saying anything. “So, Gou took over most of the work, and the rest is… ahem… waiting for you.” Nagisa said, his smile forming a apologetic line. “Great.” Haru said, trying hard not to roll his eyes so hard he sees his own brain.
After getting washed and dressed in white not too loose or too tight pants, a dark blue shirt with loose arms but tight at his wrists and over it an finely tailored doublet, its pointed hem reaching just above his thighs in black, just to rot the whole day. And after his bandage got changed he sat in his balcony again. It looked creepy, him sitting on the floor and starring through the gaps of the balustrade, but what else should he do? And besides, he’ll be like that till Makoto and Nagisa come back with food, which could take a while. He was probably going to hang out in his balcony a lot today, he sighed. Haru zoned out as his mind went to old hobbies of his. Now that he has so much free time he should absolutely take advantage of it, he thought.
He came running back into his balcony, just this time with a few sheets of paper to draw on and a graphite pencil. Again, he looked through the gaps of the balustrade and searched for something worthy to be drawn. He could draw one of the horses at the side, flowers which exist in hundreds of different colors or shapes or maybe one of the amazing detailed swords. But what really caught his eyes was the way Rin laughed at something someone said. The way his mouth slightly parted and the corners of it went up or his eyes that squeezed shut before opening again. Haru gulped before taking the pencil with his still intact hand. First he struggled to capture Rin on a piece of paper, but when he took another peek and drew the head, it was as if his muscle memory kicked in. He hadn’t drawn Rin often before, probably once when they were a lot younger than they are now. His hands moved effortlessly over the whole sheet, a line there, shadows there, his straight bridged nose, his sharp, shark-like teeth every time his mouth opened and his fierce and intense look in general. The way his red eyes looked in the sun or his slightly tan skin. Haru knew he couldn’t capture those things, or more, all of it. He only wanted his smile and eyes to be as accurate as possible. When Haru wanted to get a proper look of how Rins hair looked before he put his helmet back on, Rin looked right into the boys eyes while Haru held the pencil, pointing at him. Haruka immediately jumped back down, tho he knew Rin knew that Haru would be around. Haru rubbed the back of his neck before continuing. After he finished one picture, he started drawing another one. It was captivating how it felt to draw Rin, if it could be worded like that. After a while, he drew two whole pictures of Rin. At the bottom he wrote Rins full name in the most beautiful handwriting he could. “Haru, come on, eat with us!” Makoto smiled before looking at the boy on the floor. “You drew again? I almost forgot how good you are at this, drawing I mean.” Haru didn’t say anything back and watched as Makoto knelt down, taking one of the pictures into his hand. He rose an eyebrow, head tilting slightly. “The food is getting cold, it smells too good to be eaten col-“, Nagisa began before interrupting himself, kneeling down as well,”You drew Rin?” Haruka nodded. “I knew that he reminded me of someone, now I know who.” Makoto smiled. Nagisas mouth opened slightly,”Such a masterpiece with an popped out shoulder and only one arm still in tact? You should show it to Rin!” Haru thought for a brief moment before shaking his head. “No, what would he even think?” Haru said, trying to point out how weird that would be. “Maybe that you’re talented in any way there is?” Makoto said, bringing the plates with food outside so they could eat together. Nagisa nodded,”Write him a letter with it! I’ll bring it to him later, hm?” Nagisa hummed, waiting for Harus approval. “I’m not sure. And what should I even write? Dear Rin, I was bored.” “You two always write each other, you’ll find something! Come on! It’s so good!” Nagisa clapped his hands to hype Haru up. Makoto smiled and nodded while blowing his way too hot food. “How am I even allowed to eat inside my room?” “Don’t change the topic!”,Nagisa snapped before adding in a calm tone,”We said you’re in too much pain to come down.”, he chuckled. All three started to eat and talked about several of different topics. When Nagisa spoke about a maidens affair with an court advisor from the fathers side though she’s married, Harus thoughts drifted to the picture of Rin he sketched. He decided to give it to him, but what would he even write down? They all sat like that for an hour more, just talking and listening to Nagisa laugh before they had to get back to work. Haru wished them a good day before getting back to writing. Or more, writing what he thought was good.
At his desk he took a blank sheet of paper in front of him, and a few ones if he messes up, and tried to start simple with the greeting.
Dear Rin, he tapped his pen against his desk, trying to think of what he could write. Should he write the reason he drew this? Maybe why Rin? Haruka took a deep breath. He needed to clear his mind, tho riding with one arm and knowing that he other one is unable to use could make it impossible to ride into the forest. Haru thought about a simple walk outside, and maybe he could check on his horse and the other ones as well. And the afternoon sun reached its peak, so he had to go out. Haru somehow put on his long, black leather boots that reached just under his knees and then made his way outside with an almost blank letter, a graphite pen and his portrait of Rin inside a small satchel that he hung over the intact shoulder.
The feeling of everything outside his room immediately made him feel better. He walked into the stall, where all the horses should be, with careful steps to not scare any horse. Inside the large stall he found his own horse, stroking its head and feeding her an apple. “What’s its name?”, Rin asked as he walked to his own horse, dressed in brown loose pants and a white shirt instead of his knight armor. Harukas hair stood up as he got startled, but nevertheless he answered. “Rin.”, he said with a teasing grin, back turned towards Rin before looking over his shoulder at him. “Woah, I am truly flattered that you named your horse after me, prince.”, Rin said sarcastically while bowing. “Where are you heading?” Haru asked, trying not to show too much curiosity as he fully turned towards Rin. “Why? Are you bored?” Haru thought about saying no but eventually told the truth. “Yes, it’s suffocating inside my room.” Rin chuckled, the sound heart-warming. “So, where are you going?” Haru asked again, this time more persistent. “A small village outside the castle.” Haru tilted his head. “Why, do you want to come with me?” “No.” Haru said uncertainly. Rin smirked with an confused expression before nodding. Haru went back to stroking his horse, his stomach feeling as if dropping. He took a deep breath and tried not to be distracted by Rin putting the saddle on. It was his only chance to see something outside the village, who knows when the next time will be, Haru thought. “Rin!”, he snapped,”can you take me with you?” “Sure. Don’t you think you’ll get into problems?” “No, I’ll just say my fellow knight was with me.” “Sure, sure.” Rin smiled, head shaking.
When Haru put one foot onto the stirrup, Rin took his hand and gently pulled him up. Haruka sat down in front of Rin, since Rin insisted that’ll be safer and that way he can’t fall down. “Are you sure you want to come with me?” Rins head leaned over Harus shoulder to look right into his eyes, Haru stared back just as intensely, their breaths mingling. “Yes, I am sure.” Harus gaze went back to the path that lead outside, before a riding helmet was placed on his head and Rin grabbed the bridle, the horse moving forward. “Can you secure the helmet by your self, or do you need my help?” Rin asked, the warmth of his chest pressed against Harus back. “I’ll be fine”, Haru said, his long, pale fingers moving to tighten the helmet. “I actually don’t need a helmet.” “Yeah, right. I don’t want to risk it.” Haru shook his head. The path they took to the village looked more dry than the ones Haru knew. “How long is it going to take? Is the village far from here?” Haru felt himself getting too excited at the thought of seeing something different. “Not really. It’s about an hour from here.” Haru nodded, his legs limply hanging from the horse next to Rins pair of legs. “And what do you do at the village? How is it” “The village is,” Rin trailed off, not finding the right word,”you know, beer, music, people dancing, lots of markets, children and so much more.” Haru tried to imagine it all. He wasn’t sure how different the village was going to be from the palace. “You’re dressed quite well for someone who has to stay inside his room or maybe the garden all day.” “Mh?” Haru tilted his head.
Haru swung his legs slightly, getting too drawn away. “Haru, stop kicking my legs!” Rin kicked back. “Excuse me!?” Haru said as he looked back at the man, kicking even harder than before. “Ugh, typical royal behavior.” Haru rose an eyebrow. “What do you mean by that?” “That you’re spoiled, mean and-“ Rin burst out laughing. Haru rolled his eyes, turning his head back to the front as he hid his smile.
When they eventually got closer to the village, Haru already heard loud music which sounded like everything energetic. “Are we there?” Haru almost jumped up if it weren’t for Rins arms tight at his waist, holding the bridle. “Mhm” Rin hummed. “Do you also drink beer?” Haru thought on what to answer. “No, but I could try. I usually drink wine.” “It’ll taste good.” As Rin rode into the village, a few people walked smiling towards him. Two man way older than Rin but the rest in his age, and a few girls dressed in simple brown dresses with ruffles at their arms. As one helped to knot the horses bridle to the sign, the others looked Haru up and down when Rin helped him down. He gulped, standing slightly behind Rin. “I brought my friend with me.” Rin said as he took his hand, pulling him forward. “Nice to meet you” One of the men said as he approached Rin with a grin. “So you’re a knight now? You didn’t even came to tell us, we had to wait until the rumors spread out to this village.” Rin smiled. “Yes, I am now. I was quite busy, but I finally made room to come visit you all”, Rin explained,”And you, Sousuke, how is it to still be a squire?” Rin teased. “You probably have some privilege.” Sousuke said which made Rin chuckle. “Nah, I am just great.”
While Rin spoke with his friend, whose name was Sousuke if Haru caught that right, he tried beer for the first time. The beer prickled in his mouth, but the strong taste of it was better than Haru expected. “And, do you like it?” Rin asked. Haru nodded,”It tastes really good. Why don’t we have it at the palace” Haru trailed off as he took a few more sips, emptying the can out. Rin laughed at him,”Want more? I’ll buy you some.” As Haru waited for Rin, a girl sat next to him. Her hair reminded him of carrots, her eyes are brown, her voice tender yet loud and she was sun-kissed. She smiled,”You are so handsome!” She said while her eyes trailed from Harus lips, to his blue eyes, his raven hair and last his pale skin. “I don’t think I know anyone who has as pale skin like you do.” She beams. Her hand reaches out to touch him, her fingers slightly bent as she comes closer. Haru sits there, unable to move or say anything. “He doesn’t like being touched.” Rin says as he pulls her hand back. In front of Haru he places two beers. “Both for you.” Rin squeezes in between the girl and Haru. “Does everyone in celandine look like that?” “No, just him. Don’t you have to help your mother?” Rin muttered as he sprawled his arms out on the table, laid his head onto them and watched Haru drink the beer. The girl groaned and stood up.
Haru and Rin eventually drank beer after beer together, though Rin said he doesn’t want to drink too many today.
Inside the bar there were ballad singers, fiddlers and, what Haru found was the most entertaining one, instrumental musical groups. Everyone inside started dancing and laughing, and with big amused eyes and a huge smile Haru watched them. The man took his wife’s hand and turned her around, while the children locked their arms and ran in circles and the other ones laughed and moved around as well. “Come on!” Haru turned his head towards Rin who was now taking his hand, his cheeks bright red as he laughed. “What? Are you drunk?” “From the beer? We should’ve drank more, then maybe.”, he said as his arm wrapped around Harus waist,”Don’t move the other arm. Is the pain bad?” Haru blinked a few times before finally getting that Rin was speaking to him,”Wha-no. It’s fine.” The grip on Harus waist tightened before Rins feet moved so he would be turning in circles with Haru. “This is making me even dizzier.” Haru chuckled at the absurdity,”Then why are you doing it?” “Because it’s fun” He said as he bowed in front of Haru and held out a hand as if pleading for a dance. “You know, I never learnt how to dance. At the knight ceremony, I couldn’t even keep up with the princesses.” Rin confessed. “Want me to teach you?” Haru asked, louder than usual due to the loud music and all the people inside there. He felt that his face was hot and his head exploding, but going back home wasn’t an option for now. Rin looked at him with wide eyes before nodding. “Wrap your arm around my waist again and take my other hand.” Rin does as Haru told him to. “Try to walk with me.” He shouted as he took two steps to the left, one to the right and then turned with Rin which almost made him trip. “Warn me next time.” “Sure, my bad.” Haru feigned pity and Rin smiled in disbelief.
When Rin puked, they had to get out. Not because they had to, but because Rin didn’t stop puking. “Mhh”, Rin groaned,”too much music, beer and dancin-blech!” Even Haru winced as more came out of the man, though he just stood there. Haruka knelt down and pushed his maroon hair back. “Isn’t the fresh air helping at all? I’m sorry, I asked you to drink more.” Rin shook his head. “No, really, it was an amazing day, and it still isn’t over, my stomachs just been acting up. Don’t apologize.” He said as he stared into Harus blue eyes, abruptly standing up and taking his hand. “Let’s look at the markets, shall we?” Haru nodded.
The markets were exactly what Haru imagined. People sold exotic spices, textiles, writing utensils, meat, hand made things, porcelain, imported fabrics, tea and coffee, accessories and perfume. Rin only bought a ribbon for his sister, since he comes so often and barely needs anything. Haru found everything interesting but went with some new ink and paper. The markets were exactly was vibrant and people came and went, good deals were made and good things were bought. Girls from upper class which had diamonds hanging down their hair walked through the market, trying out the different kinds of make up and ethereal oils.
As both walked back to the horse to feed it and then ride home, Rin came across children who were braiding flowers into circlets. He knelt down and eventually completely sat down as he looked at the kids. Haru also got closer. One of the girls had many flowers inside her hair, the different colors making it look fabulous. “May you guys teach me how to do one of those flower circlets? They look amazing.” Rin wondered. One of the kids smiled at him before trying to explain it. “So,” she started, her voice cute and soft,”you divide the stem into three parts, just like when braiding hair.” She explained, watching as Rin part the long stem of the daisy into three sections. “Now, you braid them, take the right stem and put it over the middle one, then do the same with the left and repeat.” Rin nodded. “Now, while you braid you lay out another flower into the middle before each crossover.” Haru nudged Rin. “You’re so concentrated, half your tongue is sticking out. Rin smiled but then continued braiding. At the end he thanked the kids and walked back to his horse. Rin held the circlet with both his hands, his right foot in front of his left one as he bend them, bowing. “What are you trying?” Haru asked confused as Rin stood tall again and placed the circlet on Harus head. “Crowning you.” Rin stated. Haru was dumbfounded as he stood there, not getting a word out. “Thank you, Sir Rin.” He joked. “Too bad that it’s made out of daisies and not celandines.” Rin nodded, laughing softly.
As both rode back, the moon followed them home. It was already night time. Harus eyes were getting heavy and he leaned against Rins shoulder. “Are you tired?” “Mhm”, Haru replied. “The day was probably really exhausting for you, huh.” Rin said more to himself than to Haru, already knowing the answer. “But I really enjoyed it. It was fun, getting out of the castle, you know. You showed me there is more. You showed me that there was something beyond the castle. I want to see all of it.” Rins eyes widened before a huge smile spread across his face. “Rin, are you fine now? You should eat or drink something when we get back. You really did vomit a lot out” “I feel fine now that we’re out of that loud village.” Both went quiet for a great while. “Haru, your birthday is soon.” Haru nodded. “That’ll probably be the day every possible queen will attend, since I turn 18.” “Yeah…” “Haru,” Rin whispered. “Yeah?” “Haruka. Haru.” “Yes, Rin?” “I can see the reflection of the stars through your eyes when you turn to me.” “I can see them through your eyes as well.” “That’s not the same.” Before Haru could say anything, Rin suddenly put his hand over Harus mouth. “You hear that?” “Hm?” “The water clashing against the shore?” “Mhm.” Haru nodded while pulling Rins hand off his mouth.
Haruka thought he forgot something, but he wasn’t sure what. Until his mind clicked. “Rin, can you open my satchel?” Rin leaned forward, opening the bag for Haruka. Haru slid his hand inside and got out a piece of paper. “Here”, he mumbled,”I wanted to give it to you with a letter, but I wasn’t sure what to write in it. My only sentence is <Dear Rin,>, and that’s pretty much it.” Rin took it into his free hand, trying to see what was on it. Haruka tried to see the look on his face. “You drew it today didn’t you? When you pointed at me with your pen.” “Yes, you’re right.” “I-uh, thank you.” Rin stuttered and Harus heart felt heavy. He knew Rin wouldn’t like it. “I’m sorry if you think it is absurd to just draw someone or if-“ “It’s perfect. Im so happy… Thank you” Rin murmured, his head falling against the backside of Harus head. He wrapped his arms around Haru and squeezed him, trying to avoid his shoulder. “Focus on riding!” Haru hissed. “Why did you draw me tho? I wish I could also draw you, but you would probably think of the finished product as an insult.” “I drew you because”, Haru stopped and thought, he had so many reasons today but? He breath in deep. “You laughed and it caught my attention within a second, the way your hair moved while the sounds came out of you, your cheeks that turned red, your sharp teeth I saw when your mouth parted and the way your red eyes looked in the sun when you opened them again, the sunlight reflected in them. That was it.” Haru recalled and said all those cheesy things before realizing how much embarrassing things he just said, or worse, how much he just said. “Forget it.” “No way.” Rin laughed out loud.
Notes:
I just realized that I never explained what the flowers i mentioned even mean… But if I do now the plot is kinda obvious.
Chapter 4: Secrets
Summary:
Harukas daily duties start again. His shoulder finally healed, though it still made sounds which shoulders probably shouldn’t make. And the castle is emptier than usual due to the missing knights.
Notes:
No Rinharu and the next two chapters are pretty short since I had no ideas. I read like 10 different books and fan fictions for inspiration.

Chapter Text
The small boy, whose pants were covered in dirt from the mud he just walked through, thinking it’d be fun, kicked rocks around. Boredom was etched on his face as he didn’t make a single tone. His parents didn’t do anything with him at all, though they tried. They just “didn’t have the time”, as Harukas mom said every time, with sadness in her eyes as she stared at the small, doe eyed boy she had born so he’d overtake the crown. Since his gaze was fixed on the ground, or, the rock he kicked forward each time, he didn’t realize he hit a boy with it before he yelped and caught Harus attention. “Hey!”, said the other small boy, brows furrowed and sharp teeth clenched. Harus eyes found his before they widened and he apologized. “I’m really sorry, I didn’t see you.” Rin now finally realized that the boy who just kicked a rock at him was the prince himself. “O-oh,” he started stuttering and bowed just as he was told to,”don’t apologize.” Rin bit down on his cheek. “It’s fine. I kicked a rock at you.” Rin gave a nod and wanted to continue doing his chores, head turned away again, until he felt a tap on his shoulder. “What are you doing?” Haru asked with genuine curiosity, head tilted. “I’m getting ready to go for a ride!” Rin beamed, smiling with his eyes shut. “Why?” “Because I’m training to become the best knight in the whole kingdom!” Rin shouted even louder. Now, Haru realized he was a page. His eyes sparkled as he took in the boy in front of him. A knight. Haruka repeated in his head.
Nagisa loaded a small basket filled with requests from the villages on Harus desk and then walked out with a smile. “I thought I had to do way more work.” Said Haru from his desk as his butler, Makoto, stood there and tried to not talk too much. Unfortunately or fortunately, he never could, so he just talked when he pleased to. “Way more? That’s still a lot.” “Yeah, it sure is but I expected more.” Haru reached for his pen and as his arm fully stretched his shoulder squeaked then cracked, earning him a shocked look by Makoto. “It’s fine, my shoulder is healed.” He reassured. “Yeah, yet it is now more sensitive, meaning it could pop out again.” Makoto explained in a calm tone, yet his expression was stern. Haru clicked his tongue to which Makoto shook his head while smiling.
He worked his way through everything, still wondering why he has so less to do. He isn’t complaining, just hoping that the workers didn’t oversee any letters which could get Celandine in some serious issues. Okay, Gou took after the most things but still. The letters were all pretty useless and every now and then Haru just stared at them, not exactly sure on how to answer to such questions or statements. ‘Alright’, Haru mouthed. He read the next letter, eyes flying from letter to letter on the thin piece of yellowish paper.
The letter was definitely not written by the lord himself, he could barely write at all. It must have been one of his butlers, the one he’s definitely having an affair with. Everyone knew that the lord was more into young people, so ever since his wife got older and got her first grey hairs, he got too friendly to the people working close to him. Haru shook his head to get rid of the dirty thoughts and instead concentrate on the letter in front of him. Though, after reading through it he wished he would have just burned it. He read a second and a third time, trying to make sure that he was just hallucinating and the letter didn’t actually say what it said.
Prince Nanase,
it has come to my attention that the kingdom is going to and will fall apart if you don’t marry a princess to make her the next queen of Celandine and present the world it’s next heir. Since Celandine is one of my strongest alliances, I can’t and will not let the kingdom fall apart. So, to make matters easier for you, I sent my most beautiful daughter to your kingdom to support you and eventually become your wife and hold the heir. She will arrive soon, and I want you, prince Nanase to get to know her and confirm a marriage with her.
It is important that the marriage receives lots of attention, so everyone knows that Celandine will not fall, in case any kingdoms are planning on taking over your land. But the heir must be born as fast as possible, regardless of who you mar-
And the rest Haru didn’t even bother to read. Makoto must have seen the look of horror on Harus face, that could be the only explanation of why Makoto was now looming over Haru to read the letter as well. “Wow, his most beautiful daughter? He must really trust you.” Makoto joked, trying to help with the tenseness. “Yeah, a lot. And what does he mean by ‘as fast as possible’, how am I supposed to make babies born faster!” Haru whispered to himself, clearly stressed and saying things that he wanted to keep to himself out loud. ‘Arriving soon? When soon? Everything was too vague’ “He probably means for you to impregnate her as fast as possible, and not to waste any time.” Yeah, Haru knew what he meant but took the chance to be sarcastic. “Amazing. I saw his daughter last as a child.” Haru groaned and continuing to answer the rest. Everyone offered their daughter, weren’t their daughters getting sick of this too? Having to marry someone they didn’t even knew? Haru knows no one who married out of love, as a child he thought his parents may have married out of love, but it was only a thought of a naïve little kid. Too many things, or questions were going through his head. It felt as if he was trapped, drowned, crushed. Crushed with the weight of having to save the kingdom. Drowned by all the people around him. Trapped by the castle he ate, drank, slept and stayed his whole life in. He was born with barely any choices, yet when trying to open up he was told, “There are poor people out there who have nothing.” Which wasn’t a lie, but hurt nonetheless.
Haru let his head rest in his hands. “Miss Amakata must be waiting for me, mh?” He asked so quietly, it was a whisper. “Yes, shall we go?” Makoto asked gently. Haru nodded and jumped up his feet. “If something is wrong, talk to me.”, Makoto mentioned and waited for an answer he never got.
Their footsteps echoed through the whole hall. Haru already subconsciously noticed that the castle is much quieter than it is usually. They didn’t really talk much on their way to the room where miss Amakata would be waiting. Makoto started humming until they came across Nagisa who carried a pile of books and letters,”Hey guys!” He said while trying to bow. Makoto smiled. “Hey, do you need some help? I mean”, Makoto stopped a brief second to look at Nagisas arms around the pile, letter after letter falling down while trying to clench them with his own head. “No, it’s fine! Have a nice day. Unfortunately I’m quite busy today.”
When Haruka opened the door, the smell of old books, dust if that even has a smell, flowers, tea and sweat filled his nostrils. “Good morning”, he muttered which Amakata repeated before bending her knees and letting her head down, bowing. “I hope your morning wasn’t too draining. After all, you had a lot of work waiting for you after being on a break due to your shoulder.” Haru nodded. “It finally healed, though it hurts every now and then. And no, it wasn’t too much.” She smiled and pointed with her head to the chair. “It’s pretty unusual for a prince to be that desperate to be a knight”, she started as Haru took the list of exercises he had to do, basically the same as the other knights. “I am not desperate, I wanted to try something new. I underwent the same training as them for several years and got knighted by the king.” She nodded,”Which was the reason you were allowed to knight the others. You were a knight yourself.” The raven narrowed his eyes at her curiosity. He, as the prince, had his own teacher and so called trainer. Privileges I guess. Though he preferred being with the others, he still didn’t complain. But ever since he was a child, people were curious about why a prince would want to be a knight that bad. A year after questioning everything, people just figured it’s normal for a boy to be interested in swords, armors and fights. And it wasn’t too weird, considering that it was expected of princes to undergo knighthood.
“Try the other arm.” She pointed on his left arm which he hadn’t used at all today. Haru threw the sword into his other hand and caught it effortlessly, slicing the human made of wooden (which Haru found very impressive, by the way) up.
Sweat beads formed on Harus forehead after going through the plan for the third time. Miss Amakata sat in the sun and watched Haruka. He ambled towards her and gulped down some water while watching the almost empty castle if it weren’t for the maidens, pages and squires. Which is still a lot, but for Haru it looked empty without the knights. “Where is everyone? I mean the knights.” “Oh, the knights went to the Lords kingdom. Some special tasks for them to do.” He nodded solemnly, wondering why they wouldn’t have called him before figuring that most weren’t so sure if his shoulder was already fully healed. “Did Rin also go?” “Of course.” Haru hummed out a response. “And when will they be back?” “In a few days.” Haru stared at the grass in front of him, puzzled by the empty feeling inside his chest.
Later, when the sun went down, Haruka was called by Nagisa, who seemed to be in a rush. He ripped open Harus door and then ran into the bathing house. He ushered Haru towards the small dining room only for the royals. “Go into the small dining room! She’s waiting for you!” He already started pulling Haru out of the bathing tub. “Uh, excuse me? Who’s waiting?”, he asked as his eyes ripped open,”Don’t tell me my future wife is waiting?” “In case you don’t want to marry your own mother, no.” Haru sighed in relieve. “Sure, just give me a moment to get ready.” He took Nagisas hand as a support, the water dripping off him. Makoto gave him a towel and then went with Nagisa to pick him out some clothes. They chose a white shirt with a ruffled neck, a dark green vest made out of thick layers of silk and black broad pants.
“I’m not sure why Nagisa was so desperate to leave again but alright. I hope he’s okay.” Makoto mumbled on their way to the dining hall. “He’s probably hiding something from us.”, he then added. “Or maybe just overworked. But you’re right, he’s acting pretty odd these days.”
Haru walked into the dining room, both the court physician and his mother’s political adviser stood there, watching every step of him before bowing down. “Haru”, his mother, with similar facial features to his own, smiled, her laugh lines showing. She had the same raven hair as he did, her eyes were piercing blue as well and her skin was pale. People always described her as incredibly beautiful, and were devastated when they found out that she will find her end soon. “Mother.” “Sit down, Haru.” Haru sat down, breathing in shallowly. He kind off already expected a talk about his marriage. “I wanted to tell you that the lord himself sent a daughter of his.” His mother nodded slowly, thinking about Harus words as she held a cup of warm tea. “The lord himself? I see. And, are you happy about that?” Haruka knew better than to lie, she always got onto the truth somehow. “No, not quite. Though, maybe after she arrives people would stop volunteering.” She chuckled, her sweet laughter reminded Haruka of old times when she was still healthy,”I know that you want to marry out of love. I also know how much pressure everyone is putting on you. But, you’re the only one who can save us.” Her hand found Harus, her dry skin scratching his own skin,”But, what even is so different about having a wife and not having one. And what if I marry, now people won’t suddenly think that we’re the strongest kingdom.” “Yes, but, what about the next crown prince? Who is supposed to take over when you die? And a kingdom trusts a strong couple more.” Haru felt Gous piercing gaze on him. “Alright. I should head out, I have a few more things to do before going to bed.” She hummed in approval, her smile tight. She probably expected more time with her son. “Haru, dry your hair next time better”, Haruka was already almost out of the door,”and, we’re more similar than you care to admit.” He clicked his tongue and walked out. While he walked towards the half of where the workers rooms where, he noticed whispers coming out of Nagisas room. His hand hovered over the doorknob but he eventually walked past it.

Chapter Text
A few days ago, Nagisa received a letter from the lord saying that he wants the knights out of all his kingdoms so they’d undergo a special mission and training as his own knights. Nagisa obviously hesitated to sent them all, or more, tell the now commander that he should sent them. The reason was clear, the pages and squires couldn’t protect the kingdom alone if something happened. Yet, as soon as the knights heard of that all were suggesting they should go. Who was Nagisa to stop them? And to his pleasure, the days of hard, or the weeks, were finally over now that Haru was able to move his arm again.
When Nagisa stood up, the cold air of the night and the cold tiles under his feet made him almost go back to bed. At least his bed was warmer than the rest of the castle. Nagisa will have to ride out and get the villages letters where they wrote down all their requests. He already knew nearly all of them were impossible, yet Haru always tried to do good for everyone. Nagisa wasn’t even sure if Haru has ever been to one of the villages, but shockingly, he has. With Rin, by the way, which he found pretty strange. But Nagisa and Makoto would never snitch on, not only the prince, but also their best friend. They barely talked to Rin, but that Haru did a lot was already enough for them.
Nagisa lazily put on brown pants and a shirt with a beige undertone. He then put on his matching pair of brown leather boots, the fur inside warming him again. He tightened them and wrapped a strap with tiny bags around his waist and tightened it as well.
He hummed to himself while practically jumping down the stairs, a huge smile on his face. Picking up letters from other villages meant going out for a ride, which Nagisa absolutely adored.
In the stall he first caressed his own horse before putting her satchel on. “Good morning”, he chuckled when she neighed and nuzzled her head in his hands. His horse was brown, a kiso horse. She’s Japanese and smart. Ever since he started working in the castle he’s been with her.
Due to the cold wind Nagisa trembled slightly. But he knew he made it to the first village when he saw fire. Riding a tad faster, he reached it. Most people were still asleep, excluding a few elderly people. ‘Typical’, Nagisa thought. He collected everything they wrote down with a smile, howbeit they have barely written anything. The reason must be the lack of education, Nagisa sighed. Haru will probably not be happy.
The next few villages had a few requests more, but it still wasn’t a lot. Most of the people usually asked the prince for more food, which he tried to give to them. The other noble people found Harus “antics”, how they called it, stupid and said that he should not have something to do with the poor.
When Nagisa arrived in the last village, he rode to the grand house at the end of the street. He knocked at the door and waited for someone to answer, when no one did, he knocked a second and a third time. Finally, the door opened and revealed a girl who looked exactly like him just with longe hair. “Nagisa!” She jumped on him, arms and legs wrapping around the frail boy. “Hey! Where are mom and dad?” “Father is at work and mom is in the kitchen. She said that she wanted to talk to you.” Nagisa nodded and slowly pulled his sister away from himself, placing her back on the ground.
He walked into the kitchen, his mom had put her hair in a braided bun and her skirt was covered in bluebells. “Nagisa, you’ve finally came to visit us.”, she already started in a tone which made Nagisas stomach twist in ways he didn’t like. He thoughtfully sat down, his mom mimicked his movement.
“I heard that the prince still hasn’t chosen a wife, after two years now. And it’ll probably go on like that for another two years.” Nagisa shook his head,”The lord sent his daughter. I’ve gotten the letter yesterday.” She sighed,”Do you really think he will marry her? He’s just like his mother, she almost risked the kingdom as well and did something truly unforgivable.” Nagisas gaze found the floor, he gulped down at the reminder. He himself didn’t experience it of course, but whenever people mentioned the queens past everyone would shut the one talking down. “I think he will marry her.” Nagisa defended the prince for which he earned furrowed brows. “I do admire him, I truly do. He’s talented, he learned to rule the kingdom while also being a page, squire and finally a knight. Yet he is not willing to do everything for the kingdom.” “He needs time. After all, his parents are about to die, wars are threatening and it all started when he was only 15.” She hummed, understanding what Nagisa is saying but probably not agreeing. “You should start looking for a wife. You cannot stay alone at that castle forever, who will take after your job if you don’t have any sons.” Nagisas eyes widened at her stern tone, no, at what she just said. A wife? So soon? He was only 16. Sure, some people married younger but those people weren’t him. “Yes, but that can wait. I’m still young and healthy, I’ll be able to do this job for quite a while.” “No. I want you to marry. What if you end up like the prince? Or even worse, the queen.” “She already made up for her mistake.”, Nagisa inhaled and exhaled, being too scared to get too loud,”I should go back to the castle. Work is waiting.” His mother stood up with him,”Think about what I said.” ‘Yeah, I will’, he thought while clicking his tongue.
With heavy steps he walked towards the room Haru should be working. He really wondered if Haru felt the same as he did, only more pressured. He didn’t want to marry, because he knew he could never marry Rei.
Nagisa didn’t want to look the same way he felt, he knew the boys would question it too much. He smiled before bursting through the door. He emptied his basket with the requests on Harus table and walked out. The rest Haru just said sounded muffled due to the closed door. For today he should be finished since he already did most things yesterday. The only thing missing are Gous answered letters for the queen.
“Gou, can I come in?” “The door is open.” He pushed down the door knob and found her sitting at her desk. “Just one more letter and then I’m done.” Nagisa nodded,”Good job. Was it too exhausting.” “No, it wasn’t a lot. Most about the letters contained Haru anyway, so I just answered most letters with refusal to tell them anything about the prince as soon as he doesn’t order me too.” Nagisa showed a thumbs up and then sat down. “I really wonder what the Lord has to do with all the knights.” Gou looked up and thought for a brief second,”That’s true. I just hope Rin is happy. He’ll be back in a few days.” She mumbled, Gou focused on sealing the letter she just wrote before handing it to Nagisa. “Ah, by the way knights, the queen ordered me to add something to the squires exercises. Shall we go together?” “Sure! I also wanted to head there after picking up your letter.”
The squires learned such things as courtly manners, combat techniques and swordsmanship. They also had to take care of the knights, or more, after their horse, armor and sword. While the knights wore armors, they wore tunics with a split color design so they were able to move better. And they had silver spurs to signify their status.
Rei waved his hand at Nagisa, smiling and running towards him. Nagisa cleared his throat and turned the other way, ignoring him. When he felt Rei behind him he pouted. “I told you to not act like you know me in public.” “But you are our messenger, who doesn’t know you. And besides, we’ve already talked at balls.” Nagisa sighed and turned towards Rei. “Yes, you’re right. So, do you still want to come over later?” He looked up to Rei, whose hair clung to his forehead with sweat. “Of course, why would I cancel.”
“Mh~”, Nagisa softly moaned when Rei’s lips bit down on the sensitive skin at his neck. “Did something happen today?”, Rei asked. “It’s nothing, it’s just that I’ve been on my feet since before sunrise.” Nagisa didn’t want Rei to worry too much. “Are you still scared of someone might catching us?” Nagisa froze. No, that was not the reason but kind off one of the reasons he forgot. “Not quite.” Rei laid his head on Nagisas naked chest, sighing. He looked up at Nagisa, his eyes extra wide. “You’re too worried.” “There are lot of people who were caught.” “The prince hasn’t.”
Nagisa wanted to tell him that he wasn’t just worried, but also in a bad mood because of his mother. But the second time today, Nagisa was flabbergasted. “Excuse me?” “The prince hasn’t been caught.” “Who should catch him for what?” “He absolutely has an affair. Isn’t it pretty absurd that after two years he hasn’t chosen a princess out of hundreds who volunteered?” Nagisa couldn’t deny it. Yes, it definitely was. But the reason couldn’t have been an affair, he or Makoto would have noticed it. Or maybe it was Makoto? “I-… yes. It’s absurd. Maybe he’s looking for true love?” Rei shrugged. “Did you want to say something? I felt like I interrupted you.” “Oh, uh, y-yeah. My mother, she’s been nagging at me again. This time she wants me to marry. She doesn’t want me to end up like Haru.”, Nagisa rolled his eyes. As if it’s disastrous that a seventeen year old hasn’t married. Rei’s face twisted. “She wants you to marry?!” “Keep your voice down!”, Nagisa whispered louder than he knew someone could whisper loud. Rei held his hands up in a defensive manner,”Sorry!” “Let’s forget that for now.”
The smaller boy sat up and clutched Rei’s face in his hands before placing a soft kiss on his lips. Rei blushed softly, which earned him a grin from Nagisa. Rei now sat up as well and kissed him back with more fierce. As the kiss deepened, Nagisa laid down again with Rei on top of him. “Let me turn around, and don’t rush it, Rei!”

Chapter 6: Expected, yet unexpected guests
Summary:
“She’s so quiet and calm but still confident and she is very smart, I could sense it. I think she’s”, Makoto took a brief pause,”just like you.” Haruka stopped in front of Makoto, back turned towards the taller man.
Chapter Text
The piece of paper, which was lighter or as light as a feather, laid heavy in Harus hands. The voices in the background were blurred out, muffled maybe. He knew that Nagisa was complaining about something while Makoto offered support, natheless it was as if he didn’t hear anything.
Rin’s handwriting was neat, which Haru wouldn’t expect if he hadn’t already gotten so many letters by him. Two days had passed, and Haru didn’t answer Rin, but by the way the sentences were worded he probably hadn’t even expecting a reply. And even if he did, the knights are back from their special mission.
Haru couldn’t help it but read the small text written in cursive for the hundred time today.
Dear Haru,
the days are passing slower than the nights, but I’m making progress. I hope your shoulder isn’t causing you any problems anymore. I saw a lake that was similar to the one we saw as children, I’ll tell you more about it when I’m back.
Rin
“Haru!”, Haruka jolted when Nagisa shouted at him. “Hm, yeah?” He looked up and quickly tucked the piece of paper beneath his pillow. “Were you listening?” “Uh yeah.” Haru stuttered out, receiving blank glances before Nagisa went back to rambling. “I cannot believe it! She really wants to marry me off! And she had the audacity to bring up the queens past!“, Nagisa slapped his hand on his mouth, shutting himself down. Haru raised an eyebrow and then tilted his head. “The queen? What’s with my mother?” Nagisa shook his head. “Nothing. I’m sorry, I’m talking nonsense.” Makoto smiled,”We should get back to work, and besides, Haru?” His gaze found Makoto,”Yes?” “Since your shoulder is healed, you have to go back to normal training. Today you’re supposed to go hunting. You know, to get used to your bow and arrow again, and try to not burden your shoulder too much.” Haru nodded. “I know”
Makoto clothed Haruka in a black, short tunic, tight fitting pants, spurs and leather boots. Over it he put on a chain mail in case something might attack him. “Here’s your bow, some arrows, and, do you want to take your sword as well?” “No, bow and arrow must be enough.” Makoto dipped his head before giving both the things to Haru.
Haru rolled his shoulder as he walked to the gate that leads out to the forest. “Still causing you problems?” Rin asked, both his arms above his head as he yawned. “Not a lot. It healed pretty well.” “You better not lie to me”, Rin said teasingly while smirking. “I would never”, Haru said back in the exact same tone. “Hey, I’m being serious. Tell me if something is wrong.” “I’m fine. You better focus on hunting.” Haru assumed that Rin also went hunting since he carried a bow with him. Other than Haru, Rin wore a short sleeved tunic. His skin was tanned, Haruka observed. “Let’s go together, hm?”, Rin opened one single eye expectantly, waiting for a response while the other eye was still closed with his arms above his head. So Haru was right. “If you insist.”
The two boys walked next to each other, shoulders touching every now and then. Their steps were synchronized as they walked deeper into the forest. “So, what was the talk about a lake that you mentioned in the letter?” Rin shifted his gaze towards Haru. “It glistened the same way under the moonlight. What did you say to it again?”, Rin laughed as Haru rolled his eyes. “That it was magical and probably had mermaids in it. And? I was a child.” “And you fully believed that it’ll turn you in one a-“ “Now you’re rambling quite much, don’t you think?” Haruka walked faster to leave Rin, who was still making fun of the few times Haru actually spoke his mind, behind.
“Haru!”, Rin whispered,”Look, a deer!” He pointed to the light brown animal that had a slender body, long legs, a short tail and its huge antlers. “I don’t like hunting deers. I prefer goshawks.” Haru sweared that he could hear Rin click his tongue. “If you say so, prince.”
Haruka saw Rin run his tongue over his teeth until it stopped and pressed against his left cheek. It formed a bulge. Rins pair of eyes trailed all the way up to the sky. His side profile was truly out of this world. His eyes shimmered under the sun, so simple yet so eye catching. The way his skin was slightly tanned looked perfect combined with that maroon hair of his. “And, do you see any goshawks?”, Rin interrupted Harukas thoughts. “Uh, no. Let’s run further into the forest.” Haru already took a step forward, just before getting dragged back.
“Wait!”, Rin stuttered as he grabbed Harus arm, then let go of it and grab his own bow. “Do you hear that?” The sound of an animal wailing, its wings cutting through the air. Haru also took his own, just a little more elegant. “You want to shoot your shot, or you’d rather let me do it?” Rins face erupted in a challenging smirk,”Look how fast it flies, I don’t think it’ll wait for you.” He said before pulling back the bow string. His eyes narrowed, trying his best to catch it. Unfortunately, he completely missed it. “Aw, hey!”
Branches crunched under their leather boots as they both quickly followed the animal. Haru took in the way it flew so freely through the sky, free from responsibility with wind blown through his feathers. In another life he’d be a bird. “Can’t you run any fa-“, was all Haru heard before a loud thump. “Rin?” Haru roamed through the leaves and branches before finding Rin laughing on the ground. “Sorry, I stumbled.” Haru smiled softly as he reached out for Rins hand. His face darkened,”Did you fall on those?” He asked, pointing to the violet flowers. Its beauty was something Haru always found interesting, yet it was so easy to betray one. “Maybe, why? Is it bad?” Haru gulped. “Let’s head back. We can go hunting again some day. For now, let me apply some healing earth to it. Then I’ll tell you why it’s bad.” Rin stood there as he stared at Haru with a grin, eyes hooded and head tilted,”Are you worried?” Harukas eyebrows lowered and drew together, his lips tightened and his nose wrinkled at Rins dense question. “Obviously I am worried when you just fell down on wolfsbane!”
The skin on Rins forearm was red with tiny blisters forming on it. “How do you feel?”, Haru asks as quiet as possible. Both of them were in the huge shared library, the smell of books was everywhere. Rin sat on a chair while Haru knelt in front of him, gently applying the brown paste. “Wolfsbane can lead to a cardiac arrest.” Haru couldn’t see what face Rin was doing, but the silence was enough to tell he’s flabbergasted. “It feels tingly.” “That’s because of the aconitine.” “Will I die?”, Rin breath out. “No, I don’t see any bruises through which it could’ve enter you and we put some healing earth on it. I also cleaned it, so you should be fine.” Haru felt bad. ‘Did I scare him?’, he thought. He gently put a hand on Rins shoulder and leaned it. “If you notice anything, just go to the court physician. And leave the paste on for an hour or two.” Haru saw Rins adams apple bob. “Tha-“
“Haru!”, both Nagisa and Makoto looked frantically around. “Yes?”, he rose, back straight again. Rin stood up as well. “You won’t believe it!” Haru placed a finger over his lips, trying to tell the boys to quiet down. Nagisa shrieked,”Princess Akiko!” “What? What about her?” “Standing in front of the palace!”, Nagisa barely breath. “So the lord didn’t lie?”, Harus lips pursed, eyebrows raised and eyes widened. “Why would the emperor lie, Haru.” Haruka shrugged. “And uh, what exactly do I do with her? It’s barely afternoon.” Nagisa pinched the bridge of his nose,”Greet her maybe!? Then ask her if she wants to rest, and for later, I planned a date on a boat. The sun is shining at its peak, we should use that.” “But I prefer to be alone on a boat. And what are we even supposed to do on the boat?” “Talk, try to get to know her.”, Makoto explained.
Nagisa smiled and shook Haru by his shoulder,”Go change first, then greet her. The tunics not your best outfit, I must admit.”
Haruka clenched his fists at his sides. “So the queen arrived?”, Rin asked in a tone Haru couldn’t order anywhere in. “The queen is still my mother”, he spat out before leaving.
Haruka was undeniably overdressed, he thought, nonetheless he refused to change again. Haru had on white tailored trousers, a silk blouse and on top of it a fitted white coat with gold embroidery for some color and his circlet. He slipped on his white silk gloves before walking down stairs, his heeled leather shoes clicked against the stairs. Makoto rushed downstairs as well before composing himself behind Haruka. “Now welcome her.” A valet led the princess to the antechamber earlier, Haru knew that the room was usually cold.
Haru opened the door with a loud bang. Next to the princess with dark hair stood a not really tall man with dark orange hair. His eyes narrowed as he observed the prince himself. And on her left stood a lady’s maid. Haruka closed his eyes as he bowed, gulping loud one last time before getting a grip of himself. “I’m sorry for letting you wait, princess Akiko.” She had black straight hair sitting on her shoulders, her skin was as pales as Harus, perhaps even paler, but her eyes were dark brown. So she’s the daughter of the emperor. “It’s fine. I heard that you went hunting”, she showed curiosity in what Haru did. “Yes, that’s right”, before she could say any more, Haru cut her off,”You must be tired from the long journey, would you like to rest? My butler could lead you to your room.” She straightened her shoulders, looking confident. “I’d like to change out of my clothes.” Haru dipped his head before gesturing to Makoto to take her away.
“She’s so quiet and calm but still confident and she is very smart, I could sense it. I think she’s”, Makoto took a brief pause,”just like you.” Haruka stopped in front of Makoto, back turned towards the taller man. Haru considerate of what to say, but decided to go with nothing. Haru rested his forearm on the handrail as he waited for the princess to come down. ‘I hope Rins forearm is okay’
The princess walked down the stairs with a gentle smile, one hand resting next to her body while her other held the handrails. As expected of a traditional Japanese princess, she wore a delicate silk kimono embroidered with chrysanthemums. While Harus whole kingdom was Japanese as well, it was heavily influenced by the western. Barely anyone wore a kimono here. Her glossy black hair was put together in a graceful shimada-mage, adorned with mother of pearl hairpins. Makoto cleared his throat when the princess stepped on the last staircase, so Haru held out his hand towards her and watched as her long fingers wrapped around his own hands. “You look great”, was forced out by Haru. She smiled again, this time it looked more sincere,”Thank you”
Makoto, again, guided them towards the boat. Haruka helped her in, grimacing as she carelessly tried to get inside,”The water is a lot deeper than it looks.” ‘Not so smart, huh’, he thought while judging Makoto. After Haruka sat down next to the princess, Makoto undid the knot so the boat can move.
The lake where Haru often sat on the boat was near the training ground of the knights. Or more, they use it to spar there. The lake was connected to the river inside the forest.
Haru felt uneasy, he didn’t know what to say to her and didn’t even have anyone with him to maybe help. “So”, the princess broke the tension,”I see that your folk looks really Japanese, but isn’t influenced by our culture.” Haru nodded,”Yes, we go more with the western culture, as well as our clothes or just our daily lives.” “Does that have a reason?” “Not particularly”, he rubbed the back of his neck.
“You seemed tense when I arrived, I thought the emperor informed you about my arrival?” Haru bit his lip,”Yes, I did know about that, yet it surprised me. The lor-emperor didn’t name the exact date for your arrival.” “Now I understand.”
Haru hoped that it wouldn’t go like that the whole leisurely boating wouldn’t go with a question from her and an answer from Haru. But Haru had no questions to ask, at least none that could come to his mind. “I heard that you’re turning 18 in about one month?” “Yes, almost two months.” “Will a lot of princesses attend the birthday?” “According to my dad, probably.” Haru closed his eyes. He hopes that she doesn’t have some kind of jealousy towards a guy she met an hour ago.
The water trickled slow and gentle with them. After that last question, the dialogue was more easygoing. Haru figured that she’s a lot more than he first thought, in a good way. The boat reached the place of where the knights trained, it takes only a few minutes by foot but somehow longer with the boat. “Those are my knights.” Haru told her. She nodded in interest,”That’s the first time I’m seeing knights. Although, they are the same as samurai’s, aren’t they?” “Yes, they indeed a-are” Haru stuttered as the boat collided with something. His head tilted before he stood up and tried to see what stopped the boat. “Is everything alright?” “Yes, don’t worry.” Haru reached into the water, or at least tried to before the princess stopped him. “You’re fully dressed in white.” He shook his head,”That is not within my sphere of concern”, muttered Haru while taking of his silk gloves. As he reached down, he felt thin, soft and flexible underwater plants stopping the boat.
Haru stepped with one foot on the gunwale. “Be careful.” “Yes.” “You’re about to slip.” “I’m careful.” Haru tried to gulp down his anger, if that’s even possible. The knights must have noticed their struggle, because three approached them. Haru tried to pull at the branches and plants underwater. “Prince Har-“, was all that Haruka heard before he immersed into the deep lake. First, Haru had to open his eyes and get used to the burning sensation. The water around him was blue, with a green undertone. The sunlight shone through it, of course it did, he wasn’t too deep. Things floated around but Haruka didn’t care. Everything was quiet, he didn’t hear a single thing.
Before Haru could even swim up, another figure he couldn’t make out jumped in as well. ‘Rin?’ One hand wrapped around his wrist and the other around his waist.
Both gasped as they broke through the surface. “Haru!?”, both Rin and princess Yukiko asked,”Are you okay? Why wouldn’t you be more careful!” Rin shouted. “Why would you jump in? I can swim as well.” Rin tilted his head. “You can?” Rin sighed, letting his forehead rest against Harus in defeat. “Yes, I can.” “I am sorry, my body moved on its own.” Haru smiled softly,”It’s fine. But still, thank you”, Haru pushed back rins hair,”We should get out of the water, the stream is pretty strong.” “Yes.”
The purple flower, so lethal yet so intoxicating. It only takes one touch.
I wonder, will I touch it again?
My poison, I burn and die. The Wolfsbane, a dangerous beauty.
Notes:
Though everything is fantasy, I chose to take a real princess (I’m not even sure if her names right, I should’ve double checked)
Princess Akiko-Naishinnō is the daughter of Princess Yukiko and Higashiyama, she was born in 1700th during the edo period (I think…)
Her father was an emperor.Okay, maybe I should’ve just used my brain for once and make an OC.
Chapter 7: When we met
Summary:
His hand hung lazily next to the column, though it twitched for a brief moment when Rins small finger wrapped around Harus index finger. He looked over his shoulder, trying to see what the boy was doing. He, Rin, on the other hand continued to stare at the sky. Harus heart did feel heavy, he knew or at least thought that this gesture meant nothing but what would others like Makoto and Nagisa think?

“Young prince, you cannot just run away!”, a young woman with short, light brown hair shouted gently, frustration evident in her voice. She took Haru by his shoulder to pull him back in. Rin smiled gently as his head fell to the side in a soft manner. Harus eyes widened, light reflecting in his blue eyes as he went back in.
“Dear prince, didn’t we talk about how you cannot run away?” Haru nodded. “My apologies” Haru bowed. Her smile didn’t really reach her eyes at first, but after a sigh of frustration it looked sincere.
Haru’s light feet tapped against the floor, hesitating whether to ask what’s bothering him or not. “Miss”, he spoke softly. “Yes?”, she asked, lifting the umbrella she was holding to reveal her face. “When do my page lessons start?” She chuckled,”Well, soon enough. You’re already coming of age, aren’t you? Good that you can read and write.” Haru bobbed his head, pressing his lips together. “Let me talk to the king for you, how does that sound?” “Yes, please.” She chuckled as she sent Haru off.
Beneath the tall wooden door, he heard the loud laugh of his father filling the room. “He found his own way there, didn’t he? What a smart boy”, his teacher, Miss Amakata, told him everything. “I think he got the idea because of a boy he met outside, or maybe it were the stories he read before going to bed. Whatever it was, he seemed truly captivated.” “Oh yeah, who wouldn’t be. After all, he’s just a little boy.” For a while, Haru couldn’t hear anything. When the door suddenly swung open, he fell back, hands pressed to the cold tiles. Both of them stared down at him before smiling. “Where you eavesdropping?” “No…” Haru said too weak to be believed. Once again, his father laughed. “Come here, dear. And, what do you think about miss Amakata making you a real knight?” “With the others right?” He saw his Adam’s apple bob as he gulped. “Not quite, but every here and there sure!”
Haru stroked the horse, his tiny hands cupping at the ears of the animal. Small foot steps approached Haru, the maroon haired boy smiled again as their eyes met. “Hello. I didn’t expect that princes also had to do the same stuff we do.” Haru jumped down from the stool, his boots hitting the ground and hay crumbled beneath them. “Of course I have to. What did you expect” Rin closed his eyes in an embarrassed manner, scratching the back of his head. “Not sure, just not you taking care of the horses maybe.” He shrugged. Haru crouched down before sitting completely down. “May I sit next to you?” Haru pointed with his head to the empty space next to him. As he leaned back against the wooden wall, it shifted with both their weights.
“So, what brought you here, Rin?” At first, Rin looked ready to answer, then, for a brief moment, he looked stunned. “You know my name?” “Of course I do.” Rin chortled softly as he shook his head. “I was supposed to look after the horses, but I guess someone already did, huh?” A short period of silence followed after that, just before Rin’s curiosity won. “How do the lessons of a prince look like?” “The same as yours. Reading, writing, dancing and learning good manners.” Rin observed him as he talked, Haru could tell that much. “To learn that I was sent here. But, don’t you learn any fancy languages or something?” “Yeah, I do. French” Rins eyes widened for a short moment. “You speak French?” “A bit. What about you?” “A little English and Japanese, that’s it.” He looked embarrassed, and did, again, that head scratch. “That’s good. I can teach you French.” Rin smiled.
“You said, <to learn I was sent here>, now I’m curious. From where exactly were you sent here?” Rin hesitated. “It’s a small village, actually not too small but compared to celandine”, he grimaced,”it’s an hour less or more from here. Everyone there dances, we have a lot of beer, the houses are okay though we are pretty poor.” Haru nodded throughout the description. “Are you happy here?” “Sure. But I wish I had my mother.” Harus brows furrowed, maybe in empathy. Though Harus mom was just a door, a few floors and maybe another door away from him, Haru could relate to Rin. He missed his mom.
“Happy 13th birthday, Rin”, Haru whispered into Rins ear, as if it was a secret they shared. Haru saw how his hair stood up when his warm breath met his ear. Rin smiled softly, although Haru saw his eyes scrunching to avoid tears rolling down his cheeks. “Please cry if you feel the need too” Rin sniffled. He brushed his maroon hair behind his ear. As he observed the cake the 12 year old Haru made, he looked at him with something that he couldn’t describe. “Even candles, huh?” “Of course, you’re finally a squire now. We should celebrate that” Haru sniffled as well, not because he felt the need to cry, but because the garden was getting cold.
It was way too cold for February, but to be fair, Haru already knew it’ll be a cold winter. “Blow them out and make a wish.” He mumbled, wiping his nose with the back of his hand. “You’re freezing.” “We can go inside, make a wish first.” Rin shook his head, grinned, breath in and then blow all of them out at once. “I hope that me and Haru never get separated.” Haru groaned softly,”I heard that wishes don’t turn into reality when you say them out loud.” “Then why don’t you fulfill my wish, or do you need some kind of magic to do that?” He asked with a hint of sarcasm, eyebrows raised and puffy eyes downturned as he leaned in.
“No, I doubt that. Just stick to me and we’ll be fine.” “Whatever you say, majesty.” Rin stood up and grabbed Harus cold hand, he pulled him up and then wiped his backside clean. “No need to do all that.” “I have to practice for the knights I’ll be serving!” “Sure.”
In Harukas room, where it was less cold than outside in his garden, they hid behind a curtain. Haru had no reason to do so, until now he doesn’t know why he did that. Maybe he liked the way his heart pumped whenever he and Rin hid somewhere together? Anyway, Haru felt Rins soothing warmth whilst he snuck closer to him. “Here’s your gift.” Haru grabbed into his pocket and pulled out a necklace with a coin as pendant. Carefully, with trembling hands, Rin took it into his own. He gasped softly, surprised by the present maybe? “Wait”, he grinned before a choked out laughter escaped his throat”,isn’t that you on the coin?” He shrugged. With a little help from Haru, Rin knot the necklace around his neck.
“The squire training must be so cool!” Nagisa jumped around while Rin told them, very detailed by the way, how today’s lessons were. “It was! Then I got to hold a real sword!” He shrieked. Nagisa turned to Haru,”Just a few more months, then you’ll join him!” Haru bobbed his head, excitement bubbled up in his chest. Being a page isn’t as fun as it was with Rin, so Haru really was looking forward to turning 13 as well or at least getting favored by his dad to join him.
Nagisa told them about the class he had to attend and how boring it was. Makoto only followed along with a smile, making a few comments here and there. Haru did listen, but more was he admiring the view from the Balustrade he was sitting on. Behind the column was Rin. He could’ve left, but Haru knew that he didn’t because he heard his breathing.
Those thoughts occupied his mind and heart on a daily basis, although most people thought of them as best friends. What they were. Obviously. Rin peeked from towards the column, surprising Haru with a grimace. “You look good today. Special occasion?” “Maybe my 15th birthday?” Haru ‘asked’ in the same tone. Rin only chuckled, once again, shaking his head. “Im quite the jokester, aren’t I?” “Maybe the role of a jester would’ve been more fitting?” “Yeah, I also thought of that.” Rins hand swallowed Harus. “No, really. You look good.” Haru now also looked at him, really looked at him. For Harus 15th birthday he didn’t want to wear anything to special. His pants were dark blue, a royal blue. The end was stuffed into his boots. He wore a soft white blouse beneath a deep blue short-sleeved shirt, the edges of the blouse blooming like petals at the neck and arms. The blue fabric was adorned with fine gold detailing, and the shirt dipped low at the collar, revealing the pale folds beneath. And hanging around his neck was a gold necklace with blue jewels.
“Thank you, you also look decent.” Rin bowed extravagant,”Oh my, what a day.” He looked up and held out his hand,”May I ask for a birthday dance? Since I cannot attend the birthday” “You don’t even have to ask. But here’s a question from me, can you even dance?” “I guess you’ll have to find out.” Haru jumped down from the balustrade, his hand now tangled in Rins once again.
The first few steps were radiant. Perfect. Their feet moved in sync, Rins eyes were solely focused on Harus own pair. The next steps? “Ouch!” Rin grimaced,”I am sorry, Haru! Uh, I think I can’t dance?” Haru sighed. “A knight is supposed to be able to dance.” Rin laughed it off,”What a good day to be a squire.” He placed a soft kiss on huge backside of Harus hand. “Wear that.” Haru stared down at his hand, mustering the unfamiliar bracelet that was now on it. “A pearl bracelet. Th-“ “Haruka! Come on, everyone is looking for you.” The shoes of Harus mother clicked against the floor as she walked towards the boys. Haru saw Rin gulping heavily. “Y-yes. Have a nice day at your mothers, Rin.” Rin bowed,”Thank you.”
Haru thought that his mother would say anything. She didn’t.
