Chapter Text

The sky was tainted in the color of red— as if the sky was that of a white canvas that was splashed in full red paint.

The man in cloak raised his head up to the crimson sky that left nothing but an eerie feeling to the people residing in the world, though the man didn't felt it as if he was already accustomed to it.

Maybe this is what happens when you live your whole life on the battlefield, after all he had spent his days slaughtering the Hunters that were located all across the worlds. He doesn't know how many times he spent moving from world to world in the span of countless years, but he'll keep on chasing them as long as the existence of the Hunters are completely erased. It doesn't matter how long it takes him.

The man then adjusted his bloody cloak from the collar before he began to start his journey— he fortunately had finished slaughtering the last remaining Hunter, and now he just had to come to run an errand for God of Death.

— 𝗥𝗼𝗸 𝗦𝗼𝗼! 𝗚𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱! 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲

The man, Rok Soo, then sighed in annoyance as the God of Death lead the path for him in the form of an eerie white pristine book as he followed the God's direction.

Well, he may hate running on an errand, but if it includes his family and home well-being he'll save them without a second thought.

"Choi Jung Soo... Lee Soo Hyuk..."

Rok Soo muttered— he trust them enough anyway. They were strong enough to protect his family here. But, it didn't help with the ominous feeling he's been getting ever since he arrived at the world where Jung Soo and Soo Hyuk was thrown at.

The Birth Of a Hero. Seriously? The novel he had read back at Korea? To think they got dragged here.

.........

"Rok Soo...?" Jung Soo mumbled under his breath when the mask of White Star shattered into two and had fallen to the ground.

Jung Soo's eyes then widened— he... he rose his blade at his own Dongsaeng... Jung Soo's mind then was greatly shakened as his grip on his sword loosened.

Soo Hyuk didn't miss a single beat too. He was as surprised as Jung Soo was, but he clenched his grip on the hilt when he realized that it was in fact not his Dongsaeng.

Even if the world would ever give the poor man such bad life, Rok Soo wasn't one to crumble and resort to being evil. In fact, his Dongsaeng is the strongest person he had ever came to known. Even though his mentality was strong, it was also concerning because it takes a person who already grown accustomed to traumatic events.

"Jung Soo! Snap out of it!" Soo Hyuk shouted, but before he could take a step forward to run and pull Jung Soo away, Sayeru then blocked his path.

"Hey. Where are your eyes looking at when were still fighting?" Sayeru said as he thrusted his light spear.

Soo Hyuk didn't had the time to react in time, but he was fortunate enough to be shielded by Rosalyn's magic.

"Soo Hyuk-Ssi! Go and help Jung Soo-Ssi!" Rosalyn shouted as she held up the barrier which Soo Hyuk then nodded and ran to Jung Soo.

"Running away?? Are you serious?" Sayeru muttered before he got attacked by Lark from behind, but dodged in time.

"Haa. Your all annoying"

Vicross then aimed his great sword at Sayeru as his father smile benignly. They had rushed over here after taking care of White Star's minion.

......

"Nephew!" Choi Han shouted— it was just a split second when White Star that was coming to take his life shifted to attack Jung Soo instead.

As Choi Han wanted to run over to his nephew side, Dorph then blocked the way as he used his darkness attribute.

"Don't you dare bother my liege's time. Your fighting with me, strong guy" Dorph smiled sinisterly.

The two then began to clash swords. But, Choi Han was to focus on looking at his nephew which made Dorph pissed off.

"Hey! Were in the middle of fighting and you have the guts to look away?!" Dorph exclaimed as he landed a heavy blow on Choi Han which made him get pushed back.

.....

"Kugh!!!" Jung Soo then flailed in White Star's grip

"Haha. Your really as annoying as a fly" White Star said coldly.

"Hm. Your a Choi too aren't you?" White Star grinned.

"I'll just kill you and rise to a position of a God! Your doing me a big favor" White Star chuckled which made Jung Soo baffled.

My Dongsaeng wouldn't kill me... he's not Rok Soo. He will never be similar to his Dongsaeng! He just has the same face as him, Jung Soo gritted his teeth, but his heart was heavily confused and contrasted to his own brain.

Why am I confused. I know my Dongsaeng better, Jung Soo thought.

He had seen that face. The face of his one and only beloved Dongsaeng that he so dearly missed. The stoic and emotionless face that was often present, not the evil maniac glint that was present on White Star's face.

"Ugh... who are... you.. why do you have... my dongsaeng's face?!" Jung Soo shouted to White Star

"Nephew! Don't do anything reckless!" Choi Han shouted.

At the same time, Soo Hyuk then arrived, quite fortunate enough not to get blocked again for the second time as Sayeru was blocked by the other heroes in time.

"Jung Soo-ya!" Soo Hyuk then ran over towards their direction who stopped in place when he saw White Star's sword aimed at Jung Soo.

"Hm~ Where should I stab this guy? The heart? The stomach?" White Star said viciously which made Soo Hyuk glare at him.

.....

After what seemed like tens of minutes of running, he then reached at the plaza— well... it was unpleasant as he expected, his ominous feeling was true when the figure of Jung Soo getting choke-hold into the air was what greeted his area of vision first.

"Hey. Didn't you sat that they got it?" Rok Soo said as he glared at the book.

— 𝗪-𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱! 𝗕𝘂𝘁, 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻!! 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲, 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱!

Rok Soo then frowned before he stored away God of Death's book and ran towards them using instant which he then appeared behind White Star in an instant— aiming his blade near his neck.

"𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗼." Rok Soo said firmly. He could see White Star's body that immediately stilled when he couldn't feel Rok Soo presence at all.

No, to be honest. White Star couldn't feel any presence around Rok Soo which forced him to let his grip on Jung Soo loose and jumped 10 foot away out of instinct.

Choi Jung Soo and Lee Soo Hyuk was equally as surprised as White Star because of the monstrous speed the cloak guy showed.

The bloody appearance of the newcomer was what welcome their line sight of vision first.

"...can you stand?" Rok Soo asked to Jung Soo who blinked, but slowly nodded— seemingly wary about the newcomer.

"That's good then. Just stay behind me and focus on getting better, we don't want team leader to get worry sick, hm?" Rok Soo said which made Jung Soo's eye widened before he scoffed.

"Huh? You... what's with that personality of yours, you punk" Jung Soo said fondly. Ah, how could he forget? This is just how his Dongsaeng act.

"Usually I always stood infront of you, but it's different now, huh?"

"Indeed. How time changes." Rok Soo said as his attention drifted to White Star with a serious gaze.

"Jung Soo! I really can't leave you for a second without you acting reckless huh?!!" Soo Hyuk then smacked Jung Soo's head which earned a grunt.

"Hey, cloak guy. I'll help you fight that guy. I need to return what he did to Jung Soo ten fold" Soo Hyuk said as he unsheath his sword from its scabbard before Jung Soo tugged on his hand.

"Hyung-nim, it's okay. That guy can take care of this"

"Hey. Didn't I say not to trust strangers easily?" Soo Hyuk sighed.

"Stranger? Is that guy a stranger?" Jung Soo smiled widely.

"...did White Star choke you to hard that the oxygen didn't enter your brain properly?"

"Ouch, that's so rude Hyung!"

"Aigoo, you punk. I'm helping that cloak guy whether you like it or not" Soo Hyuk said as he got pulled by Jung Soo again.

"Nope. We gotta put our trust in him, hyung!"

".....alright, what's gotten into you, you punk?"

"Whatever do you mean, hyung!"

Soo Hyuk almost wanted to smack his head again, but refrained from doing so.

Rok Soo could only smile slightly behind his hood before he looked away. Haa, how did he become this emotional? Is it because he met them again after years of bloodshed?

"No need to help. I can handle the fight just fine" Rok Soo said.

"See! That guy can manage just fine, hyung!"

Lee Soo Hyuk then stared at the cloak guy and Choi Jung Soo suspiciously.

"Don't you have any some sort of trust in me, team leader?" Rok Soo said as he placed his hand on Soo Hyuk's shoulder.

"What?" Soo Hyuk unconciously said his confusion out loud as his eyes widened.

"Trust your Dongsaeng better" Rok Soo said as he pulled his cloak and disregarded it to the ground.

White Star's eyes then widened— ofcourse, he would be shock. He's looking at someone who looked identical to him. But, maybe the difference is that the latter possessed hair that dropped to his waist.

Same crimson hair, same facial structure.

"Surely you haven't forgotten about the curse have you?" Rok Soo said which made White Star froze before he smiled.

"Heh. So, your one of the souls that got impacted, huh?"

"It's not so funny anymore when I return it to you hundredfold" Rok Soo said as he used instant— as their blade clashes into one another.

White Star then gritted his teeth. This guy strength wasn't a joke. He barely managed to block his attack because of the heavy blow Rok Soo landed on him. His clashes were vicious and filled with precision.

Soo Hyuk and Jung Soo was staring at the fight with amazement. Their Dongsaeng... what happened to him to be this strong? This wasn't just a fight, it was a one-sided confrontation as if Rok Soo was releasing his pent up rage that he had kept.

The spark of contrast between the past body of their Dongsaeng compared to the present had a very large gap.

"What could've happened in the last 5 years when we were gone?" Jung Soo muttered.

His appearance was different than the usual look they always saw. The short black hair was replaced with a very long crimson hair. The febble and frail body replaced with muscles, added with old scars decorating his neck and face. But, they knew that he was still the Dongsaeng that they knew in the past.

"Team lea— no, Hyung. Did he ever had the initiative or desire to hold a sword before?" Jung Soo asked.

"No. He was one to prefer staying back and slack his days away. He always deemed physical stuff to be annoying..."

"....haha. It's gonna sound strange, but we weren't gone for 5 years were we?" Jung Soo said which earned a silence from Soo Hyuk.

"Maybe not..."

Chapter 3: Beginning

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

His eyelids then fluttered opened as he could feel the sun from outside entering through the window and landed directly to his vision.

"Ugh..."

The man grunted as he tossed on his mattress— making the book on top of his chest fall to the floor with a thud which made him stir fully awake.

"When did I fall asleep...?"

The man wondered before he reluctantly pushed his as usual heavily weighted body using the muscle he honed over the years of past hardships.

̶A̶ ̶b̶̶o̶̶d̶̶y̶ ̶t̶̶h̶̶a̶̶t̶ ̶f̶̶o̶̶r̶ ̶s̶̶o̶̶m̶̶e̶ ̶r̶̶e̶̶a̶̶s̶̶o̶̶n̶ ̶d̶̶o̶̶e̶̶s̶̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶f̶̶e̶̶e̶̶l̶ ̶l̶̶i̶̶k̶̶e̶ ̶i̶̶t̶ ̶b̶̶e̶̶l̶̶o̶̶n̶̶g̶̶s̶ ̶t̶̶o̶ ̶h̶̶i̶̶m̶.

The man rose up from his comfortable mattress as he began to do his usual monotone routine in his apartment unit that shared the same deafening silence which contrasted to the man's heart.

Contrasted to the apartment unit that he always had came to known as it had been with him when it was at its glory.

Just like how the glory days was gone, the sources of happiness along with it disappeared in just one day— only to leave behind remnants of memories as a record in his mind.

The loudest room he had ever came to known had fallen dead silent. A silent that he hated, but was forced to accept it.

The quiet and eerie silence that replaced the usual warmthness was sought to be the only companion of the man to cope with his already heavy and burdened heart.

The man, Rok Soo, changed into his dark collared shirt, after drinking his usual morning coffee before departing to work.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲—

Rok Soo then sighed as he looked up to the sky and walked away as if he never had batted an eye.

He was uninterested at what fate had in store for him, as long as he's still breathing and alive is already enough. Just like he couldn't bear to break his promise to his former team leader.

Yes. He doesn't care about his future fate. He learned that accepting fate is already living— he needn't more than that.

His work was plain, boring and tiring like the other usual days. Handling with mountains of paperworks in his office, while also attending meetings to brief and talk about the monster that they will be dealing 3 days prior, so that they can prepare enough to deal with the monsters that had been awfully and suspiciously running rampant than before.

Before midnight, he returned to his apartment unit with a mentally exhausted body before he slumped into his mattress to read the novel Jung Soo had left behind as a memorial— 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗢𝗳 𝗮 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼.

A typically overrated novel plot where a teenager from Earth Korea got dragged into another world without him knowing and forcing him to experience tons of hardships before collecting allies to kill all the villains in order to return the world back to its peaceful state.

But, funnily enough the main character shared the same family name as his friend. Maybe that's the reason he's reading this novel. Because he could remember his friend family name through this book.

"Choi Han, huh..."

Rok Soo muttered as his eyes remained on the name— the hero. The former teenager who went through countless hardships and became a hero throughout Rowoon.

He always wondered why Choi Han kept fighting for the world despite all the despair that he went through. Is he just foolish or is he just trying to desperately cling onto something that only lasts momentarily before it disappeared with time?

Maybe Choi Han is stronger than he could ever be. Choi Han may lost his loved ones when his village was massacred, just like how he lost his friend and team leader. Rok Soo never had the strength to open his heart again after losing them at that day, but Choi Han in contrast to him wasn't afraid to open up his heart again despite the countless war that weighed down on him as if the world was pressed on his shoulder, he still wanted a family, a home he could return to even if he knows that life may take them at anytime.

Two victims who had the world on their shoulders, but 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 ways on how they handle it.

He may can't find another home to return to, but just reading the realistic journey of Choi Han was enough for him to feel as if he was inside it. If he can't have a home to return to physically, a home to return to spiritually sounds like a nice idea to him.

Rok Soo then sighed. He wondered if he had gone senile after handling the 3 stacks of paperworks in his office, but it was lesser than the usual amount. So, it shouldn't even made him even more senile.

Should he just do 5 stacks of paperworks? Maybe he won't go nuts to think about it again for the second time.

Rok Soo then tossed to the side as he closed his eyes to have some shut eye— after all, tomorrow will be a long day since he has to go on a patrol in the evening, since it's his turn to do his shift.

In the morning, he did his usual routine. Wake up, drink coffee to get an energy boost so that he can focus on work, change into his dark collared shirt, depart to work, enter his work office to handle with the annoying paperworks with his record ability to assist, then in the evening do his usual round of patrol around the city with some the other members from other teams and slain all the monsters early before it could become a hassle in the future fights.

Rok Soo liked to keep it simple. If a monster is spotted, he would order an immediate kill. He wants to keep a counter-measure regarding the surroundings.

Call him an over-thinker, he doesn't care. The sooner he kill the little monsters, the sooner he can sleep peacefully and spend his time with his slacker life if evils around him were eradicate.

His patrol went normal as usual. Nothing suspicious happened under his radar which he was glad about. Atleast, he could sleep and read his novel in peace as well this night.

Ah. Finally. His long-awaited slacker life.

When all the monsters disappear from the face of this earth and Korea gets rebuilded to its previous state, he'll go and reside on top of the mountain where Jung Soo's family house is located on.

Live peacefully, sleep, build a farm like he promised to them and then enjoy a retired life. It sounds like the dream life he always longed for ever since the apocalypse hit 16 years ago.

So much had happened. He went through hell and bent til' he reached up to this position in his life.

But, when apocalypse era came to an end. He doesn't ever want to lose his 'Record' ability. Despite it being a curse ability for him, but if he could remember their face there's nothing else that matters.

After all, they were his home. His broken home that he wants to rebuild when he reunite with them again.

Yeah. Maybe, it wouldn't hurt to dream of such little things like this. After all, he's a human isn't he?

Humans tend to dream. Dreaming of every little possibility things. They don't know what fate has in store for them, so isn't it humans cope to forget about the unfairness in life by living in their little daydream world?

They don't want to imagine the different outcome they expected it to be. Just like him when he, his friend and team leader dreamed of a silly thing where they could live and retire peacefully. A time where they don't care about what fate had in store for them.

After all, they have eachother. A home they can always return to when life turns back on them.

A time where he, for once, wasn't scared of living when he was by their side. But, strangely he doesn't hate the world when it took their life away.

Feeling? Maybe he was too heartless to feel or not maybe he couldn't bear to make himself hate the world.

But, that's what scary for us humans. We don't know our real emotions and only know when we actually realized what had been lurking within us. Just like how Rok Soo's hatred unknowingly went towards the wrong way. He loved the world so much that his hatred towards it was shadowed by the hate of his existence in this world. What could've gone wrong?

𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗺— 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘁𝗵?

What could he have done in his past life to make life hate his every single viber of his body and presence?

Can he only dream and hoping it would come true someday? Just the bare minimum?

A former child filled with tons of dreams— dreaming of nothing but sunshines and rainbows in the future days to come.

̶I̶̶t̶ ̶h̶̶a̶̶d̶ ̶b̶̶e̶̶e̶̶n̶ ̶r̶̶i̶̶p̶̶p̶̶e̶̶d̶ ̶a̶̶w̶̶a̶̶y̶ ̶f̶̶o̶̶r̶̶c̶̶e̶̶f̶̶u̶̶l̶̶l̶̶y̶ ̶f̶̶r̶̶o̶̶m̶ ̶a̶ ̶c̶̶h̶̶i̶̶l̶̶d̶ ̶w̶̶h̶̶o̶ ̶l̶̶o̶̶o̶̶k̶̶e̶̶d̶ ̶u̶̶p̶ ̶t̶̶o̶ ̶t̶̶h̶̶e̶ ̶w̶̶o̶̶r̶̶l̶̶d̶ ̶w̶̶i̶̶t̶̶h̶ ̶s̶̶p̶̶a̶̶r̶̶k̶̶l̶̶e̶ ̶i̶̶n̶ ̶h̶̶i̶̶s̶ ̶e̶̶y̶̶e̶̶s̶

A former child who believed in fairytales.

̶S̶̶u̶̶c̶̶h̶ ̶t̶̶h̶̶i̶̶n̶̶g̶ ̶a̶̶s̶ ̶b̶̶r̶̶a̶̶v̶̶e̶ ̶k̶̶n̶̶i̶̶g̶̶h̶̶t̶̶s̶ ̶w̶̶i̶̶t̶̶h̶ ̶t̶̶h̶̶e̶̶i̶̶r̶ ̶s̶̶w̶̶o̶̶r̶̶d̶̶s̶ ̶t̶̶o̶ ̶p̶̶r̶̶o̶̶t̶̶e̶̶c̶̶t̶ ̶t̶̶h̶̶e̶ ̶w̶̶e̶̶a̶̶k̶̶s̶ ̶w̶̶e̶̶r̶̶e̶ ̶a̶̶l̶̶l̶ ̶l̶̶i̶̶e̶̶s̶ ̶b̶̶e̶̶c̶̶a̶̶u̶̶s̶̶e̶ ̶n̶̶o̶ ̶o̶̶n̶̶e̶ ̶h̶̶a̶̶d̶ ̶e̶̶v̶̶e̶̶r̶ ̶s̶̶a̶̶v̶̶e̶̶d̶ ̶h̶̶i̶̶m̶

A former child who always trusts everyone. Believing everyone are kind people.

̶T̶̶h̶̶e̶ ̶k̶̶i̶̶n̶̶d̶ ̶f̶̶a̶̶c̶̶a̶̶d̶̶e̶ ̶w̶̶h̶̶i̶̶c̶̶h̶ ̶h̶̶i̶̶d̶̶e̶ ̶t̶̶h̶̶e̶̶i̶̶r̶ ̶d̶̶i̶̶s̶̶g̶̶u̶̶s̶̶t̶̶i̶̶n̶̶g̶ ̶g̶̶r̶̶e̶̶e̶̶d̶̶s̶ ̶a̶̶n̶̶d̶ ̶w̶̶e̶̶r̶̶e̶ ̶t̶̶h̶̶e̶ ̶a̶̶c̶̶t̶̶u̶̶a̶̶l̶ ̶m̶̶o̶̶n̶̶s̶̶t̶̶e̶̶r̶̶s̶ ̶t̶̶h̶̶a̶̶t̶ ̶l̶̶u̶̶r̶̶k̶ ̶i̶̶n̶ ̶t̶̶h̶̶e̶ ̶d̶̶a̶̶r̶̶k̶

At the same time, a former child turned to the present man who had lost everything.

What good is there to believe in happy endings? He had already beaten the idea of making anymore naive hope.
