Chapter 1: Plane

Chapter Text

“You don’t have any idea what the hell is going on, do you? I mean, you saw what I did to your little blond friend at the factory right? Oh, that was nothing… that was fun.” Davian smiled. “That’s fun.”

Ethan saw red. He exploded forwards and began dragging Davian back towards the midsection of the plane and kicked open the panel that contained the controls for the drop hatch in the floor.
Suddenly the whole space became deafening with the noise of the wind as the hatch began to open. Ethan kicked over the bench that Davian was tied to and dangled him out through the hole.

Ethan shouted so he could be heard over the deafening wind.

“What is the rabbit’s foot!?”

When Davian failed to answer Ethan fished out a hooked blade and swiftly cut through one of the plastic zip ties holding him to the seat. Davian slipped further down towards the hole.

“Ethan!” Luther’s voice held a warning.

“What is the rabbit’s foot?” Ethan repeated, ignoring his friend.

“Ethan, stop!” Luther’s voice was insistent and implying, serious and yet fearful. Still Ethan ignored him.

“What is it?” He shouted as he cut through the second zip tie and watched as Davian jolted ever closer to his fate.

Still Luther’s voice called out to him. “Don’t do it! Ethan!”

“What is the rabbit’s foot?” Ethan yelled. He hooked the point of the knife under the third tie and swiftly snapped it away. Davian lurched again. “Tell me!”

“Ethan, stop! Don’t do it!” Luther commanded again. “This isn't you man, this isn't you. We could use him, Ethan. You know that!”

Ethan heard the desperation in Luther’s voice and looked over at him. His face was open and implying but his brow remained pinched with worry. Ethan looked back down at the man whose life he held in his hands and remembered the smug amusement he’d shown about Lindsey’s death. He hooked the knife under the final tie.

“No Ethan. Don’t do it!” Luther warned. “Please stop.”

He could do it. He wanted to do it. It would be so easy to make this man’s life end in terror the same way that Lindsey’s had.

Ethan twisted the knife against the plastic of the final zip tie and growled. He wanted nothing more than to let the vile man fall to his death and knew that it would take only a single flick of his wrist to do so.

“No, Ethan, don’t do it!”

Luther’s voice was desperate and pleading. He didn’t look at him, he was too focussed on Davian. Perhaps too focused.

He should’ve seen Luther coming but he didn’t, not until it was too late. His old friend ploughed into his side sending him flying as the knife fell from his grasp and settled harmlessly on the floor.

“No!”

Ethan shouted and struggled as he fought against Luther’s weight which was pinning him to the floor of the aircraft. He looked to the side. Declan had run straight for Davian and was pushing him back upright into the plane whilst Lei had reached the panel to close the open hatchway.

Ethan screams became suddenly loud as the noise of the rushing air faded to nothing the moment the hatch closed fully.

“He killed Lindsey!” He shouted as he wrenched himself free of Luther’s grasp and scrambled back up to his feet. “He deserves to die!”

Suddenly Declan was on him, tackling Ethan roughly to the ground. He hit the floor hard as Declan’s full weight landed on top of him. Ethan struggled but another body soon joined the fray, pinning him down, capturing his arms to stop him getting any purchase.

“Ethan, brother, this isn’t you.” Luther sounded breathless like he was exerting some great effort.

“Let me go!” Ethan yelled as he kicked out wildly with one foot, “He killed Lindsey! He’s a monster!”

“You’re better than him Ethan.” Luther continued desperately, sounding pained as well as upset.

“Lei, bring those ties!” Declan shouted and Ethan snarled.

He could hear Davian laughing as Lei hustled over with the handful of zip ties that had been left over after they had restrained Davian. Ethan fought against them with everything he could but with three against one it was no contest. His arms were pulled behind his back and crossed at the wrists. Think strips of plastic wrapped around his wrists and were pulled tight, trapping his arms together behind his back. He noted through the rage that they didn’t just use one… he could’ve escaped from one… but four? No chance.

Next came his ankles. Declan grunted with the effort as he captured Ethan’s flailing legs - he wasn’t going to make it easy on them - and bound them together with several more ties. Unlike at his wrists, his trousers and boots kept the sharp plastic away from his skin and so his legs were trapped but not painfully so. The pressure at his wrists however was tight and unyielding and he could feel the harsh plastic digging into his skin in a way that he knew would cause him to bleed if he continued to struggle.

Ethan went limp against the floor as all of the fight suddenly left him. His friends seemed to sense his change of heart as they cautiously clambered off him although, he noticed, they all continued to hover nearby in readiness.
Ethan rolled over and awkwardly sat up. Luther was by his side in an instant and helped him to lean back against the wall of the aircraft. Ethan noticed with a pang of guilt that Declan was sporting a bloody nose. And then he made the mistake of looking over at Davian.

The man was smirking. He opened his mouth and spoke softly.

“What I’m selling, and who I'm selling to, is the last thing you should be concerned about…” He paused and grinned, “...Ethan.”

This time all three of his friends wrestled him back and fastened his bound wrists to a fixture in the wall. He could feel that he was bleeding but he didn’t care. The moment he got free he was going to kill Davian. He just had to wait for the right moment.
