BARS Volume 1 | Sunset's rise

Summary:

Sunset Shimmer had abandoned her studies under Princess Celestia and betrayed her, heading through the magic mirror for her quest for power alone, ending up in front of Beacon Academy at the base of the Huntress and Huntsman statue as a 14-year-old horse Faunus. However, she found out rather quickly that if she wishes to get stronger, she'll need to train in a training academy first. And so she did for two years, and now here she is, 17 and accepted into Beacon Academy.

However, she bumps into Quart Belladonna, a young 15-year-old girl who also wishes to prove herself, get recognition, and grow stronger, but unlike Sunset, Quart wants to do so for selfless reasons. Now Sunset is only a teammate of Team BARS, while Quart is their team leader

Chapter Text

"Legends and stories. Now common knowledge to hold some truth to them and be real. No longer being scattered through time. Humanity nowadays now knows about their forgotten past."

"This version of Humanity we are was born from the ashes of the previous wave of humanity that had magic after the Brother Gods left remnant after whipping out humanity after they had rebelled because of Salem and this second wave of humanity was strong and resourceful and now had Faunus too, but was born in a world of darkness with only a remnant of Afteran magic in their souls they couldn't access. Born into an unforgiving world without access to magic. Creatures of destruction made out of the pools of Grimm — the creatures of Grimm, created by the God of Darkness, set their sights on man and all of his creations. These forces clashed, and it seemed the Grimm was intent on returning man's brief existence to nothing."

"However, even the smallest spark of hope is enough to ignite change, and in time, man's passion, resourcefulness, and ingenuity led them to the tools that would help even the odds. This power was named "Dust." Crystallized Elemental Afteran magic in hand, man lit their way through the darkness, and in the light came strength, civilization, and most importantly, life. All thanks to weapons that use dust, but also our technology being powered by dust as well. Back in the past, people used to weave Dust into clothing."

"However, over two decades ago, humanity faced one of its greatest threats, Salem, who took down three of the four Huntsmen Academies. However, hope was brought to the world by a global broadcast that revealed the truth to the world and taught the world to use KI, uniting the world together stronger than ever, and no matter the threat Remnant has faced since, there have always been those who stood up to keep the peace and protect others."

The 39-year-old Ruby Rose says to a class at Signal Academy that she's a guest speaker at. Meanwhile, in the front of her class sits a young 14-year-old Sunset Shimmer as she writes this down while chewing bubble gum.

Remnant, Beacon Academy: Age 779, September 1st

Over One Year Later

A 15-year-old girl with short, wavy orange hair that curls outwards at the tips, with freckles on her cheeks and round, soft green eyes, is aboard the large Vale Airship to Beacon, looking out the window with some other students until Quart hears a girl complaining. "Hmm?" She turns around and sees a tan girl with long, wavy red hair with yellow streaks.

"Seriously, why do I need to be in here with these extras when we could just fly to Beacon Academy instead?" Sunset complains about the fact they all need to fly to Beacon via an airship when they all learned flight in combat school. "Unless, of course, one of you losers doesn't actually know how to fly," Sunset says smugly as she openly mocks anyone who doesn't know how to fly and still wishes to be a huntsman or huntress. A girl with long pink hair looks down and rubs her arm nervously, letting Sunset know she doesn't know how to fly using Ki. "Oh, this is rich. You don't know how to fly with Ki." Sunset grins as she presses her hands on the glass window of the airship, pinning the poor girl who flinches.

"Oh. W-Well, I'm a-afraid of heights..." The girl with the long pink hair tries to explain to Sunset; however, before Sunset could continue to belittle the girl she pinned to the window, Quart speaks up.

"Hey! So what if she doesn't know how to fly using Ki? That doesn't mean she isn't suited to being a huntress." Quart's fists are balled up. How dare this girl bully someone openly like that just because of their fears?

Sunset turns around, letting her hands go off the glass window of the airship, her face filled with anger. How dare this girl who looks like she is younger than everyone else here talk back to her like this? "What did you say?" Her cyan eyes glare at Quart.

Quart glares back with her green eyes and retorts and repeats what she said: "I said, 'So what if she doesn't know how to fly using Ki? That doesn't mean she isn't suited to being a huntress!'"

Sunset huffs and rolls her eyes. "Please. I can speak to anyone any way I want." She says with arrogance as she walks away from the pink-haired girl. Quart then walks up to the pink-haired girl.

"T-Thanks for sticking up for me..." The pink-haired girl shyly says she's grateful Quart stuck up for her. It reminds her of one of her friends she has known since childhood who stuck up for her against bullies too.

"It's no problem. I couldn't just stand there and let her verbally bully you. Anyways, what's your name?" Quart asks with a smile.

Fluttershy meekly looks down, rubbing her arm as she says very quietly, "I'm... Fluttershy."

Quart, thanks to her Saiyan-hybrid hearing, heard what Fluttershy said: "Well, it's nice to meet you, Fluttershy." Quart points to herself. "I'm Quart Belladonna." Quart smiles as she says her name, cheerful as always.

Fluttershy gasps upon hearing Quart's last name. "You're related to Penny Belladonna, the protector of the kingdom of Mantle!?" She says much enthusiastically, to the point it doesn't even seem like she was shy a moment ago.

"Yep, that's my mom. Although I don't care about how rich my family is or about fame. I just have simple goals for what I want." Quart smiles genuinely, showing she's telling the truth and being open and honest about how she feels.

"Oh. Really? What is your goal"? Fluttershy asks, this time her voice going back down more quietly. But before Quart can answer, a hologram of the headmistress at Beacon Academy, Celestia, replaces it.

"Hello, and welcome to Beacon!" The hologram of the woman with long hair that's gradients of light cerulean to light turquoise, very light cobalt blue to pale heliotrope

"Who's that?" A girl with pink puffy hair asks as she points at the hologram with a bubbly voice.

"My name is Celestia Dusk."

"Oh," the pink-haired girl said as she reacted to the prerecorded message.

"You are among a privileged few who have received the honor of being selected to attend this prestigious academy! Our world is experiencing an incredible time of peace and unity, and as future Huntsmen and Huntresses, it is your duty to uphold it. You have demonstrated the courage needed for such a task, and now it is our turn to provide you with the knowledge and the training to protect our world." The hologram of Celestia disappears.

As the airship flies over the City of Vale, the students have distant views of Signal Academy. Quart and Fluttershy can hear several cries of surprise as some students look through the glass walls at the town below. "Anyways, my goals are that I want to—" However, Quart is interrupted again by a blonde girl with a cowboy hat groaning and hunched over nearby with her cheeks green, running to the back of the ship.

"Seems like not everyone is having good air service," Quart jokes as she sees the cowgirl head to the back of the ship. The ship is seen approaching Beacon across a large body of water, then they hear a raspy voice groan in disgust.

"Ugh! Seriously, AJ, couldn't you hold in puking until we get off this airship!? You didn't need to puke on my shoes!" The rainbow-haired girl complained to what seems to be her friend, given they know one another.

Quart and the pink-haired girl chuckle at this scene.

"Hey, it's not funny! Do you have any idea how long this'll take to get off my shoes!?" The rainbow-haired girl is clearly upset by this.

"This is one Hella introduction to Beacon Academy, eh?" Quart smirks as she elbows Fluttershy, who's getting a tissue out of her pocket.

"Y-Yeah." Fluttershy then rushes over to her friends and goes down onto her knees to help try to scrub off the puke on the rainbow-haired girl's shoes. "D-Don't worry, I-I'll help clean it up."

Quart thinks to herself, Yeah, this is going to be one hell of a time at Beacon if the people she's met so far get past the entrance exam.

Notes:

Yes, Ruby's speech at the start is the opposite yet similar to Salem's narration at the start of Volume One. That was on purpose

Sunset calling all the students on the Airship "Extras" is a reference to what Bakugo calls others who he used to look down on as well

Quart's first meeting with all of the Mane Five is a parallel to how Twilight also met them in both Episode One and in Equestria Girls, only difference is how Quart is more... casual, can actually hear Fluttershy's quite voice and Fluttershy fawning over who Quart is related to instead of Spike

Sunset is of course a foil for Quart

Applejack having motion sickness is based on the fact she has seasickness in Equestria Girls: Spring Breakdown and also a reference to Jaune being airsick in Episode one too

as for the Timeline, the story is a few months before the Future Trunks Saga currently

Sorry if a lot of this is similar to RWBY Vol 1, Chapter One but it needs to be to explain stuff and ofc some things will remain the same, like Glynda and Celestia's speaks being the same via hologram
