Through the Cold

Summary:

A small difference, barely noticeable…

(My take on how canon Sans may have reacted to Papyrus's death.)

Notes:

A short one shot I decided to write, my take on how Sans would have reacted to his brother's unfortunate early demise... So sad...

Tried to stick to canon as best as I could but hey, first time properly writing an Undertale fic!

ENJOY!!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Snowdin, although decently small, was one of the liviest… and warmest towns out there. The townsfolk were nice and the real estate was decently cheap. Moving into Snowdin was one of the best ideas Sans ever had.

Or maybe not. Considering that Snowdin was one of the town in the path to King ASGORE ’s castle, meaning humans would most likely pass through the small town, for better or for worse.

Looking around, Sans sighs. After the town got news of that kid’s rampage, it was chaos. But now? The total opposite, the only residents were Monster Kid, him and the snow. Sans brought his hand out of his pocket, letting a snowflake fall into his gloved hand, he stared into the snowflake.

Sans had warned the human, but it was really all bark and no bite. He wasn’t planning to intervene, not now… maybe never. Could he have done something more? Heh, probably not. He was the easiest monster to beat after all.

Or is that just an excuse to be lazy? Papyrus wouldn’t even falter for a second even if he had 1HP and 1AT… That’s just how his brother is.

The snowflake was beginning to melt in his glove, Sans let it fall to the ground, it joining the rest of the snow… Mustering up the courage, Sans began to walk, snow softly crunching under his steps. He had no idea where he was headed, not like it mattered.

Making it past his house, and towards the end of Snowdin… Sans looks down.

Snow. There was a lot around these parts, but there was something else. It’s barely recognizable but Sans could tell, the texture was different.

Dust. There was dust in the snow.

Whose dust was this? Snowdrake? Ice Cap? No, Sans saw them flee the town with everyone else…

Then…

…

“uh, where you going, bro?”

Papyrus tilted his head quizzically, as if the answer was obvious. “I’M GOING TO CONFRONT THE HUMAN, OF COURSE!”

“papyrus. you do know why snowdin’s being evacuated, right?”

“I KNOW. BUT I BELIEVE THAT THE HUMAN CAN CHANGE FOR THE BETTER! ANYONE CAN IF THEY TRY HARD ENOUGH.”  Papyrus made a pose. “I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL REFORM THIS HUMAN!”

“ok, if you’re sure… just be careful.”

“I WILL! NOW. IF YOU’LL EXCUSE ME, I HAVE A SPEECH TO PRACTICE!! I’LL BE BACK WITH A NEW FRIEND, JUST YOU WAIT! NYEHEHEHEHEH!” And with that, he went out of their house, Sans could still hear his laughter after he closed the door. Man, his brother sure is cool. If the human doesn't have a change of heart after talking to his brother… then he is truly unredeemable.

Papyrus.

Sans had expected this, the kid… didn’t listen. Of course he didn’t. He knew this would happen. Yet, he did the bare minimum, borderline nothing… but deep down, Sans knew even if he did try his hardest, nothing would have changed.

that little shit. ” Sans mumbled under his breath, eye sockets completely dark.

Taking a deep breath, Sans looked away from the pile of dust. Welp, that’s that then. Nothing he could do now, it’s just the way it is.

With that last thought lingering in his mind, Sans headed to Grillby’s. He needed to think.

Notes:

Oh so so sad, boo hoo... Anyways, get outta here!! Shoo!!!
